Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century.

There seems to be little point in writing a review of A Section when both A and B Section are having a rest on account of the Carnival . If you're interested in the result then listen tonight at 6 .40 on 3L0! I will ring from Adelaide with a report of the final between SA and Victoria . This is all on the assumption that on Wednesday SA beat WA and Victoria beat Tasmania. This result seems likely if the results of last Sunday are any guide . The revamped Victorian squad includes only 10 players from the side which played against the VFA and only Paul Considine (North Old Boys) has played in a carnival side before .

Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world . Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's fr om Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S.A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer.

Australia's favourite beer.

Coach John Fisher and the selectors have gone fora squad with more physical strength and with the right "attitude", and who can stand up to 3 games in 8 days . The first game against WA seems to indicate that the selectors have got it right . Here is how I think the side might line up in the final today, injuries aside of course . B : Bruno Conti (NOB), Richard Schober (Coll .), Michael Lopes (St . K .) HB : Rob Fuller (Scotch), Paul Considine (NOB), Peter Ryan (DLS ) C : Andrew Witts (OMs), Ian Herman (Coll .), Phil Kingston (Orm ) HF: Phil Mehrten (Orm), Cameron O'Brien (Old Xavs), Peter Adams (Ivan) F: Andy Wallis (U . Blues), Tony Keenan (B/T), Frank Gleeson (OPs ) R : Mike Yandell (U . Blues), Dominic Spillane (OPs), Simon Meehan (St. K) I/C : Mal Palmer (B/T), Shane Gilmore (B/T ) The other members of the squad who quite possibly could be in the side are Darryl Gust (U . Blues), Russell Barnes (Ormond), Andy Smith (Scotch), Stephen Bickford (Coll) and Ray Berzins (Caul .) . The captain of the team is Dominic Spillane and vice-captain is Simon Meehan . On Sunday last the Victorians wiped WA with a 120 point victory . The Vics started well with 5 goals in the first quarter and then added 7 goals in each of the next three quarters to finish with 28 for the day . Big CHF Cameron O'Brien kicked 9 goals and rover Simon Meehan kicked 4 . To finish, how many amateur supporters would support me in a move to strengthen the 'order-off rule' . Presently, oniya reported playercan be sentoff . I would like to see the umpires have the powerto send off players for offences such as the 'coathanger' and 'dissent' . In my view 15 minutes on the sidelines would quickly cool the player down and lessen what can be an'ugly' side of amateur football . But perhaps I am in the minority? I would like to hear your views !

C- The C Section topfourchanged as a result of Istweek's games . A.J .A .X . and Thomastown now lead, following good wins over M .H .S .O.B . and Banyule respectively. Old Haileybury have now emerged as a serious final's threat as a result of their sixteen point victory over.Old Trinity, who have lost top place . Bottom side Old Camberwell had four points to spare over disappointing St . Kevin's . D - While Old Ivanhoe's big win over West Brunswick has kicked them away from relegation, it has plummeted the Magpies closer to E Section in 1987 . Prston continue to lead while Monash Blues and Balaclava vie for the second double chance . Heatherton's win over Coburg has intensified the battle for fourth place . E - Bulleen United is nowan undisputed leaderfollowing their big win over State Bank at Oval 4 . Not many visiting sides come away with the four points from that ground! Elsternwick remains in the leading bracket despite a scare from lowly University Reds . Williamstown made the long journey to Clayton a successful one with a clear win . Can the Williamstown team continue to win and avoid relegation? St. Bede's moved closer to the four with the narrowest possible victory over Brunswic! ; . F- What a fright Commonwealth Bank must have given U .H .S .O.B .! An eight point victory would not have pleased Victor Zanin . Leaders Old Essendon were untroubled to beat Footscray Tech . whose form in 1986 has been inconsistent. Bottom sides A .N .Z. Bank and St . Leonard's suffered big defeats by St . Andrew's and Whitefriars respectively . Doveton took the points convincingly after their long journey to Latrobe University. G - Old Carey, after s slow start, proved too strong for Parkside while Williamstown stopped the Eltham winning run by a meritorious victory . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - Leaders Ormond suffered their second successive loss this time to lowly placed Marceilin . The battle for the double chance has intensified as a result of De La Salle beating Melbourne High and Bulleen-Tempiestowe accounting for University Blues . Old Xaverians kept their hopes alive with a big win over Banyule, while North Old Boys' victory has put Old Scotch in a relegation position at this stage of the season . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 - Last week's results, while strengthening the leading sides' positions in the top four, have made the bottom four sides' tasks harder if they want to feature in the finals . By far the closest match was St. Bernard's ten point victory over the Blacks . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 - Hampton Rovers maintained fourth place with a big victory over Ivanho 3 . Williamstown remains fifth following success against Caulfield Grammarians . Leaders St . Kilda and Parade recorded wins by huge margins over Old Camberwell and Monash Blues respectively . PREVIEW OF JULY 5 GAME S C SECTION - A .J .A .X . travel to Banyule to atone for their defeat on April 26 . In what should prove a close encounter, I select A .J .A .X . Lowly St. Kevin's await Thomastown who should take the points despite the heroic defence for St . Kevin's by Michael Waters. Old Trinity await Old Camberwell, and despite the Trin's loss of recent form they will be too talented for the 'Wells . Old Haileybury visit Hampton Rovers aware that victory could take them into the top bracket . I predict Old Haileybury to win . Melbourne High travel to Kew with the knowledge they must win to remain within reach of the four . Kew know victory could place them right with the leading sides . At home I select Kew. D SECTION - Bottom sides West Brunswick and Power House meet on the Ransford Oval . The narrow confines of their home ground should enable the Magpies to win . Balaclava await Old Ivanho e , who, despite last week's huge win, will find the Kangaroos a tough opponent . Balaclava should win and win well . Neighbours Old Mentonians and Heathe rton meet, with each side needing victory . Old Mentonians need to arrest their slump, as they have lost their last three matches . Winning form is god form , so I'll select Heatherton to take the points . Section leaders Preston and Monash Blues meet at Elsternwick Park in what could be a Grand Final preview . Preston's only defeat was byfortyfive points at the hands on Monash Blues on April 26 . Since that set back they have not put a foot wrong . Monash could win, but I select Preston, who I believe will be physically too strong .

E SECTION - Brunswick will be anxious to atone for last week's narrow loss when they meet Eisternwick today . It is pleasing to see two of the Association's senior clubs have successful seasons . h ome I select Brunswick to take the our points . At How can I select Bulleen United, depsite St. Bede's victory las Saturday? Any side that can win at oval 4 is a good one in my opinion . Bulleen United will maintain their unblemished record today . Last round losers Clayton and State Bank meet at Clayton . the Tigers should be too strong an d Clayton's loss to lowly Williamstown does not inspire me to pick them . State Bank will be in front at the final siren . AtComo two of the section's lower sides meet when Williamstown visitOld Geelong . The big ground mayfind outthe level of Williamstown fitness . I expectthe home side to be too skillful for Williamstown, despite the contributions of the Dervan brothers . The University Reds make the trip to Mt . Eliza to play Peninsula . Judging on the season's performances, the Peninsula Pirates will take the points . F SECTION - A .N .Z . Bank and St . Leonard's should have an even tussle at Oval 15 . The Bankers only victory was against St. Leonards on April 26, while the 1986 debutants have yet to break the ice . With the advantage of local weather knowledge I select A .N .Z . Bank . St. Andrew's should have nod iff iculty accounting for F .I .T .O .B . and thus furthercementtheir place in the top four . Leaders Old Essendon visit Commonwealth Bank . The leaders may find difficulty playing the winds of the Harry Trott . One word of advice, don'tattack along the lakeside pocket, Essendon, or you will be in troubly . However, I don't believe the Bankers will be talented enough to defeat Old Essendon whose players must not let their minds wander to Kilmore though ! University High make the long journey to Doveton for the main match of the round . U .H .S .O .B . on form should win the game . At Bundoora, Latrobe play Whitefriars . Ray Keane will ahve the Whitefriars p!ayers mindful that victory could take them into the top four . I believe Whitefriars will win . G SECTION - Old Carey travel to GTV-9 who will take the game right up to Old Carey . Carey started slowly last week but finished full of running . I select Old Carey without any great confidence . Williamstown, bouyant after last week's victory, await Monash Whites . The students will have too much talent for the "C .Y.'s" and will win comfortably. Parkside await Eltham . The Parkside players, with Graham and McMu rt y winning around the ground, should feed the ball forward for Bastow to boot a winning score . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - Ormond visit Banyule and should return to the winning list against the bottom side . University Blues and Old Xaverians appear evenly matched . However, given the talent latent within the Xaverian side via Studdert, Berry and Gibson, the red and blacks should win . Old Scotch at home to Bulleen-Templestowe do not appear to have the talent needed to kick a winning score against the Young Bullants . De La Salle are not likely to jeopardise their final aspirations by going down to North Old Boys . Melbourne High Old Boys await Marcellin with the confidence victory will help secure the double chance . Melbourne High should win . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 - The top sides St . Bernard's and Collegians meet at St . Bernard where the locals are always difficult to defeat . Collegians, given their better forward line should take the points . University Blacks journey north to Thomastown . The Blacks must concentrate today as the loser can virtually forget the finals . Thomastown are my selection to win . Old Haileybury make the long trip north to engage Therry . This game could well be a danger one for The Bloods' . However, they are my selection . Old Melburnians should be able to consolidate their position in the four by accounting for bottom side Old Briahton _ UNDER 19 SECTION 3 - Hampton Rovers journey to Oval 3, where they should score a victory over Caulfield Grammarians who are not having a good season . Old Camberwell, desperate for a victory, await Williamstown . The Seagulls, with finals aspirations, !viii be too strong for Old CAmberwell . Monash Blues at home to Old Paradians will be anxious to reverse last Saturday's results. Complacency of his players could cause coach Mick Dohe rty a furrowed brow today. Common sense points to a Parade victory, however I expect they wi!I have a real battle before achieving it . Ivanhoe visitSt . Kilda who will be eagerto maintain their enviable record . As visitors find victory elusive at Murrumbeena, I select St . Kilda to win . P.S . - Victoria to defeat South Australia this afternoon . No one will dispute myjudgement in this game .

Personality Pars BULLEEN UNITED TO N only living a kick away from the ground, Alf pivirgilio came down to play with the Bulls at a very young age . After trying out for a league team Alf is back at Koonung Oval and has now notched up 100 senior games . With enormous kicks to give the forward drive, he is supplying a focal point for Bulleen's resurgance this year, personally bagging an average of four goals a game . An extrmemly lively character on the field and around the club, "Diva" is now showing the ability to shoulder a lot of the work required to keep the Bulls up there . You can be certain of the full support of your teammates in the years to come, Alf .

WHITEFRIARS Whitefriars' coach Ray Keane appears to hav e lost his sense of direction . Last week he thought the quickest way to the St . Leonard's ground was via Frankston . It would seem his captain Stephen Huntley is so worried about him he has taken to tinting his hair to stop himself from going grey. OLD XAVERIAN S Fred Grubb had charge of the Old Xaverians and Fawkner Reserve game last round the week before he watched Old Xavs and Therry and stated how he was enjoying this year in the new G Section . Keep at it Fred . At the other end of the scale Sharon Algar, Field Umpire and Suzie Kavanagh, Goal Umpire are part of the new scene and we hope they continue in V.A .F .A . ranks - welcome .

COACH E S It has been reported that a number of coaches have adopted the practice of standing on the boundary line during matches . As a result the Umpires have been instructed not to commence play unitl the coaches are either seated in the area provided OR are positioned BEHIND the fence . The maximum number of persons permitted inside the fence is SEVEN (7) . Failure to comply with the Umpires' directions will result in a report by the umpire of the persons and club concerned, to the Executive Committee of the Association . GEOFF AINSWORTH (University Blues and Old Geelong Grammarians. ) Geoff Ainsworth was only 20 when he left Amateur Football . His rise to play in the VFL Grand Final in only his first year can be described as meteoric . Geoff commenced his V .A .F .A . career as a centreman with Old Geelong Grammarians (no old Geelong) in D Section in 1965 . In the 20 years since that club has not moved far ! At the time a law student at Melbourne University, he transferred to play with A Section Club, University Blues, in 1966 . In 1967 he was recruited by Geelong and was fortunate to play in the 1967 Richmond-Geelong Grand Final, regarded by many as one of the finest of all Grand Finals . "Look at some of the players who took part - we had Farmer, Goggin, Wade, Sharrock, Marshall and I must mention my travelling mates Gareth Andrews and Chris Mitchell, who I played with at the O .G .G .S, to name just a few while Richmond had Hart, Bartlett, Barrot, Bourke and many others ." he said . Geo Geoff was captain of the Geelong Grammar team in 1964 and this led him to the O .G .G .S . After a year at University he was then attracted to the Melbourne University Football Club ; both Blues and Blacks were in A Section. "It was Frank Dunin, Black's coach's decision that I ended up with Blues - he didn't want me . He saw me in a practice match after a big night out . I didn't get a touch . He reckoned I was no good but I did manage to win the Blues Best and Fairest that year," explained Geoff. Players from that era spring readily to mind but one stands out - Ed Burston from University Blacks . Burston at the time was a somewhat reluctant Melbourne recruit. "He would be my best player, both on and OFF the field", remarked Geoff . One particularly amusing incident from that year at Blues was a training night in he middle of winter . "I was the only one to turn up, the rest were at Naughtons", he said . I wonder how many O.G .G .S . had at training on that night? His recollections of his days in Amateur Football are of the comradeship and great fellowhsip both on and off the field together with the sound discipline . "The fact that there was no money was healthy. It had its competitiveness but lacked the greed", he said . His career highlight is without question the 1968 Grand Final which capped his first year in the VFL, however Geelong's narrow loss in that game provided him with his biggest disappointment . Being appointed captain of Geelong in 1973 was another significant high during his 137 game VFL career . Following his playing career Geoff served on the Geelong committee for 7 years and was Chairman of Selectors when Geelong failed in both preliminary finals in 1980 and 1981 . "The paralleled the 1967 loss . If I still have any football ambitions it would have to be the involvement in a premiership . So near and yet so far three times is a bit sad", he commented . These day Geoff is more involved with his family . He and Catriona have two girls, Jacki 11 and Philippa 9, and boys Tome, 7 and William 4 . "I hope to be involved with the boys should they play football but from a distance . I certainly won't be an interfering parent. " He takes the family down to see Geelong Amateurs, a former V .A .F .A . club . Would he like to see them again competing in the V .A .F.A.? To that he answered that it would be ideal for it to happen but had doubts about it being practical . A novel twist . Catriona had not seen a League game until she met Geoff ! Geoff is partner in the Geelong Legal practice, Ainsworth & Co ., established by his father. And like all Solicitors he has some interesting theories . One is the influence women have on current VFL football attendances . That, however, is another story . 10

THE SCORE ON THE SCORE S Some clubs, particularly in the higher sections, seem to think they have the right to ring the Press Correspondent early on Saturday evening for scores in other matches in the section . Our phone is far too busy from 4 .45 p .m . till 9 p .m . to be able to give these scores - very often we haven't even got them - and any request will in future be turned down . There are several ways of obtaining scores of other games in your section - from Radio Statons 3DB, 3AW and 3LO, or by phoning the other grounds . GEORGE McTAGG :`AIT Press Corresponde:,it .

PersÂŽnalllty P'ars 100 GAMES AT TOVERLAN D All at Roveriand congratulate Larry " Mirror" stewart on reaching his 100th game with the Club . Larry started with the Club in 1980andhas been a prolific kick getter and a very elusive player. His form has at times been indifferent, but Larry has the capabilities of being a great player for the Club . `,Nell done Larry, everyone at Roverland looks forward to your next 100 games .

TON TO MACCA Congratulations to Michael McDonald for playing his 100th gameagainstcau!fie!d Grammarians today . Macca's aggression and skill has dazzled manyan opposition since breaking into the senior side in 1979 . The V .A .F .A . has also recognized the uncanny left-footed wingercum half forward's ability with representation in 1984 and 1985 . The club has also recently accredited Macca with selection in the best team of 25 years at a recent function . Michael is also one of the few current players to have played in the Grand Final years of 1982 and 1984 and in factshowed his ability to handle the pressure situation by being named "Best Finals Player" in both years . The club feels certain that Macca's return from a recent altercation with the AmateurTribunal will encourage the team to biggerand betterthings .

100 TO PRESTON'S DREW HEPBUR N All at Preston M .B .O.B . congratulate Drew Hepburn on playing his 100th game against Monash Blues . Drew has had excellent succ~ss with the Club winning the U19 Best and Fair -st 19 83 and the Senior Best and Fairest 1S_4 . "Happy" whether playing half forward or ruck rover is always a constructive and dangerous player . Well done Drew ! Congrats to Angela and Mark Ferguson on the safe arrival of another netball player . On a sad not our condolences to K.D . and his family . KEW NEW S The Kew Football Club appreciates that the article published in the Sun on Tuesday 24th June, 1986, under the heading "Amateurs Providing Backyard Talentfor the Big League" was not a full list of players from all Clubs . Ta add to the Kew list of John Fisher ("A" B & F - 1967, State Captain and State Coach) and Ian Mort (State Representative both VFL and VAFA) we canaddfurther Hawthorn p!ayersinAlan Fanning, Dennis Jenkins, Vin Crowe ("B" B & F - 1966 and State Rep .) and of course the colourful Bartle Dipierdomenico. However an anomaly which did occur on the list was the fact that Shane Murphy gained his start in Amateur ranks with Kew - not De La Salle - before transferring to Hawthorn . Our compliments to VAFA and to journalist Howard Kotton on an excellent article .

Personality Pars 50 GAMES AT ROVERLAN D Last week saw Wayne Boyle play his 50th game for the Club against Kew . Boyley started with the Club in the junior section and has progressed through the ranks . Although not blessed with a great deal of skills, his nuggety and gutsy game is very effective . His senior games have been only few and far between but with a bit more experience and a better lack of injuries, we are sure Wayne will become a regular in the backline for the Seniors .

150 GAMES AT ST. KILDA CBOC Congratulations from all at St. Kilda CBOC to Ken Graham who played his 150th game against Old Brighton . Ken is currently captain of the Reservesand leads byexamplle with hisdisplays of courage and determination and willingness to getthe "hard ball"Thisabilityhasbeen rewaraded by being judged Reserves Best and Fairest in 1983-84-85 . CARNIVAL REPORT By PETER FRENC H

Great win to the Vics in Adelaide . A magnificentteam performance would bestdescribe Victoria's 120 pointwin overWest Australia on the opening day of the 17th A .A .F .C . Carnival . W.A . began with plenty of purpose and had first goal on the board . They were constantly in attack and had the Vic defence under great pressure . The Vics were well served by the Ormond duo, the pair of Phils - Mehrten and Kingston who with Simon Meehan and Andrew Wallis eventually opened the scoring . The change in the game came when Blues ruckman Mike Yandell limped off which sawJohn Fisher swing Tony Keenan onto the ball Cameron O'Brien to full forward and Stephen Bickford who had replaced Yandell went to centre half forward . The North pair of Baino Conti and Paul Considine were well on top and providing great drive as was Richard Schober and with Meehan and Frank Gleason winning many kicks O'Brien became a match winner taking 11 marks and kicking 9 straight . The further the game went the better Victoria played and Peter Adams, Mick Lopes, Rob Fuller and young Peter Ryan were all contributors . The stage is thus set, provided Victoria beatTasmania fora "grand final" against South Australia next week end and given the great spirit that exists in the side and the good form of the players Victoria should well and truly avenge last year's defeat . Scores : Victoria : 5 .3, 12 .9, 19 .10, 28 .13 .181 W .A . :1 .4,3 .5,7 .10,7 .19 .61 Goals : O'Brien 9, Meehan 4, Keenan 4, Wallis 3, Adams 3, Gleeson 2, Palmer, Mehrten, Gilmore . Best : Meehan, Considine, O'Brien, Gleeson, Mehrten, Kingston .

100 AT HEATHERTO N Peter "Twinkle Toes", "Old", "Ten To Two Toes", "Hammer" Hampton played his 100th game against Coburg last week . "Oid" has been around the Club fora period of about 9 years . In thattime he hasserved in thecapicityof President, Secretaryand Committeeman . He hashadtrouble stringing together games due to the fact he has tried to combine his footy with drinking bouts, an erotic love life and also his entrpreneurial business ventures . He has been a real true clubman and really excells with his antics on trip aways . His love of discos and dancing are legendary and this was most evident in Sydney one yearwhen he discovered that his dancing partner had an adams apple and went by the name of Robert . He has suffered the most on trip aways when he has fallen asleep only to find club mates had left him in compromising positions with pizzas, matchsticks and cigarette butts . He is often mistaken for a veteran of many years because of his distinct lack of hair . He has just turned 30 (going on 45) and he has a personal physician in attendance at every game to monitor his heart beat . If it wasn't for men like "Oid" Heatherton would not be as interesting and friendly . Good stuff "Hammer" and we hope the boots won't be hung up for good!

50 GAMES AT ST . KILDA CBOC Congratulations to Brian Cummins who played his 50th games againstTherry . Brian joined the Club in 1983 and has reached his 50 playing both seniors and reserves, mainly in the forward line . Well done B .C . All at St . "Bealy" joined the Club from school and has progressed from the U19's to captain of our senior XVII I for the past two years . Andrew won the U 19 Bestand FairestAwardforthecompetition in 1980, came third in 1985 "C" Grade Best and Fairest and on a club level has won the leading goal kicker award and won our own Best and Fairest award last year . Andrew has won a great deal of respect from people he plays with and against due to his tenacious, fair and inspirational brand of football . Andrew, from all at S .K .O .B . we wish you the very best for the years ahead and wish you well for the next 100 games . (P .S . We can't wait for your dancing at this year's SKOB review!!)
