A Section Review by Ross Booth

Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century. Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain.

One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S.A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Australia's favourite beer.

Collegians hold top spot after their 19 point win over North Old Boys at Harry Trott Oval a fortnight ago. It looked for a while like Collegians winning run was going to end as North led by 10 points at quarter time, but a 6 goal second quarter by the Lions put paid to that! 'an Roberts kicked three goals in the term to end with 6 for the day and now has 59 for the year . Collegians centreline of G reg T gear, Peter Kahn and Gary Irvine really got on top in this term as well . Lion central defenders Simon Williams [CHB]Band Stuart Hinchen Gerarc! rown did reasonably [FB] were just too strong . Nort h's on-ball players Peter Wright, Mark Bowman and re well as did half forwards Mark Malone and Luke Morse, but sadly for North it was their 3rd loss in 4 games . BulleenTemplestowe "stole" a one point win over University Blues. It was very wet at Timber Ridge and the game did not reach a high standard . Blues held Bulleen goalless in the first quarter and kicked 5 themselves . They led by 20 points at three quarter time, but Bulleen, with Shane Farley dominating on the wing powered home with 6 goals in the last quarter . Earlier the Macaulay brothers, Simon and Nick together with the aging but brilliant Bernie Angel had set the Blues up for a win that would have taken them into the four. But the loss sees them slip to sixth . Ormond moved up to third place with a big 53 point win over Ivanhoe at the Boulevard . Ormond's key forwards Scott Taylor [CHF] and Andy Hill [FF] were both amongst the goals with 5 each . Rovers Joe Young and Andy Mehrten blitzed Ivanhoe in the early part of the game with Ormond holding almost a 12 goal break at the major interval . Rob Stewart and Phil Russell tried to lift the 'Hoes' in the second half from the half back line but the leeway was far too great to make up . De La Salle was in control all day against Marcellin and scored a comfortable 48 point win . they might have won by more but for bad kicking at goal . Tim Cooke in the centre was a powerhouse and Brian Wald ron and Pat Maher in defence kept the Eagles out . The Getson brothers, Luke on the wing and Matt in the ruck were Marcellin's best . Bottom side Caulfield Grammarians proved Peter F re nch correct when they got up by 3 points over Old Scotch . Curiously, their last win was against Scotch at Elsternwick 8 games ago. The Fields jumped Old Scotch in the first term and held a 5 goal lead at half time. But they lost two key players in that half - Warwick Watson from the forward line who had kicked 5 goals and ruckman Dick Fish, both with hamstring injuries. Scotch came back in the second half with Caulfield finishing the game with 16 fit men and two injured players propped in the forward line. A gutsy win! It was Chris Stone's last game for the club - he is moving to Sydney in business and David Matthews, John Kanis and Phil Callil made sure his last memory of the club was a winning one! The win by Caulfield breathes more life into the relegation stakes. For a change of voice listen to Peter Fre nch tonight at 6.40 on 3LO! I am having a mid-term break! But this week I fancy : A SECTIO N Marcellin v NORTH OLD BOYS DE LA SALLE v University Blues COLLEGIANS v Old Scotch Bulleen-Templestowe v ORMOND [Elsternwick] Caulfield Grammarians v IVANHOE

Elsternwick are quietly confident of being the first side to upset Bulleen-United this year . I'm afraid I don't the 'Wicks confidence and will stick with the E Section leaders . St . Bede's are at home to Clayton an d as will Peninsula at Mt . Eliza against its bayside brothers in Willy CY. State Bank will be untroubled OGGS & Brunswick will enjoy the big Uni . oval and accound for Uni . Redz . F Section I like Whitefriars over ANZ Bank & St . Leonards may just break the ice this week by beatin g Footscray Tech At Patterson Lakes. St . Andrews can win its 8th game by beating Comm . Bank & Uni High c set for a big win over La Trobe . In the match of the section Old Essendon willl show its supremacy by beating Doveton at the Grammar School . G Section winners are easier to pick Monash over GTV9, Old Carey at home over Parkside & Williamstown 3rd game by beating Eitham . Don't foorget Amateur round up tonight on 3LO at 6 .40 p.m .

Before looking at today's game a public vote of thanks to VAFA Coach John Fisher, skipper Dominic Spillane and all the team who represented this Association so magnificently last week in Adelaide . They have restored the States supremacy in Amateur football and deserve our congratulations for the manner in which they represented this Association . The match of the day in A Section will be played at Elsternwick Park between Bulleen-Templestowe and Ormond . The Bullants must win to retain second spot - Ormond must win to stay clear of North O .B. who will surely win at Bulleen against a rattled Marcellin . The heavy conditions will favour Ormond who enjoy playing at Elsternwick . Both sides will welcome the return of state players Phil Meh rten, Russell Barnes & Phil , Bulleen-Temp . A doubt thatKingston & Keenan Kingston for Ormond & Tony Keenan & Shane Gilm will play as both suffered injuries in Adelaide . Each inn,his re own way will be sorely missed . However Bulleen-Templestowe have almost become used to playing without the big red haired ruckman come forward and will cover his probable absence. The roving duels between Andy Mehrten & Young for Ormond & Vin Asdagi & Ric Demarte Bulleen-Temp . are sure to provide a highlight and as both sides have skilfull and attacking forwards a great game is assured . Since their arrival in A Section in 1984 Bulleen-Templestowe have never beaten Ormond and I don't believe they'll improve on that today . Uni . Blues face a crucial match at Waverley oval against De La Salle who will have appreciated the weeks break . The Blues simply cannot afford a loss at this stage and nor can De La who would drop out of the four in the Blues .are victorious . I'd be tempted to go for the students at the University but at East Malvern De La who know their ground so well will win . Collegians play host to Old Scotch at the Trott and can expect a tough game for the first half . However the Lions greater team work and running game will see them pull away in the last half to record its 9th win and secure top place . Caulfield Grammarians are confiident oof upsetting Ivanhoe at Albert Park and thus putting real pressure• at Marcellin & Scotch . As I'm still on the field's band waggon, especially after spending a week with Ray Berzins, I'm going for Caulfield at home to win a very vital game . I don't know what's gone wrong at Marcellin . All I do know is that No rt h win and win well . Marcellin have a shocking record against their visitors either at Bruns . Elsternwick Park orwill Bulleen and North will be eager to boost its useful percentage at the expense of the disorganised eagles . In B Section Old Paradians will strengthen its grip on second spot by accounting for Old Melburnians & Old Xaverians will do the Blacks a big favour by beating Parkside at Batman Ave . Spare a thought for the Parkside defence who must contend with an in-form Old Xav. attack of Steven Curtain, Richard Armstrong &" .fi Australian Cameron O'Brien . It is without doubt equal if not better to any attack in the competition and Parkside coach John Wise will certainly have his problems this afternoon . Therry at home will score a most important win over St . Bernards and the Blacks are unlikely to upset their charge at a place in the four by taking Old Brighton too easily, which leaves us with the big game at North Road between St . Kilda CBC & Fawkner. Better sides than Fawkner have struggled on the windswept oval at North Road and with the return of Simon Meehan and knowledge that victory will allow the Club too remain in the top four I'm going for the Saints . In C section Thomastown will cement its place at the top of the ladder by beating must be a big worry for Coach Andrew Disney. Ajax will stay with 'Town on top by beatingOld Trinity whose form St . Kevins & Banyuie will put yet another nail in the High Schools Coffin by winning at the School Oval . Old Haileybu ry can thank its lucky stars that they meet Kew at McKinnon and I expect them to bounce back from the shock loss last week to the Rovers and run Kew off its legs today . At Balwyn, Old Camberwell & Hampton Rovers are bound to provide a most entertaining game and I predict a Hampton Rovers victory. Preston & West Brunswick clash at Blake Street and Preston are likely to rebound strongly after its poor showing last week despite the fact that West's had a confidence booster at the expense of Power House who will struggle to beat Balaclava, who will also be keen to atone for last weeks loss to Old Ivanhoe . The Brown & Whites will be full of confidence and at home I'm confident they can upset Coburg's plans for reaching the top four. Traditional rivals Old Mentonians & North Brunswick meet at North who are struggling and the Panthers will be looking for a confidence booster. Monash travel to Ross Street to take on Heathert on and by 5 p.m . will prove they're one of the sides to defeat for D Section honours in 1986 .

* THE HIGHLIGHTS * (And there were plenty!) Paul Considine's most courageous mark - backing into a pack of West Australians . A mark never to be forgotton by those fortunate enough to witness it . Came ron O'Brien's 9 goals straight from full forward against W .A., followed by 1 against Tassie [he was centre half back in that match) and 8 goals 1 behind against South Australia again from full forward . It is doubtful that an Amateur Carnival has seen such splendid - accurate kicking for goal from all angles and distances, and Cameron's winning of the Hugh V Millard AAFC Medal as best player in the carnival was indeed popular . Mick Lopes 3rd term effort against South Australia . At a vital and crucial period of the game Michael was impassable at half back and off the field was a surprise comedian in what older hands like Simon Meehan and Phil Mehrten were quick to realize was a very clse knit group, a closeness which had much to do with the final successful result . V.A.F.A . Umpire's Brian Goodman and John Hall were both consistent performers who brought credit both on themselves and their fellow V.A .F.A . umpires with their consistent and polished displays . How Benny would have loved that final match ! Doc Costello was called into action in the Wednesday match against Tasmania, as Ryan and Phil `Kingston both required stitches to head wounds received prior to quarter time! "Kingo" Peter was quite a mess and 'couldn't return until the final game on Saturday whilst "Rhino" returned to gather 12 possessions in a game last term performance .

Two other players to show out were Bruno Gill and the ever smiling Mal Palmer. I'd no seen either play before and was most impressed with the balance and skills of Conti and the polish, poise and coolness of Palmer. They both appear to have bright futures.

"okienu ac by Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO - 198 1 De La Sallemoved into the 'A' Section four with a big win over St . Bernards, 18.12 to 7.9 with the best, Murphy [7 goals], O'Keefe, Hollier [De La) and M . Sullivan, P. Wood, Dalma [St. Bernards] . Old Brighton lost their postion in 'B' Section four to their conqueror, Old Paradians, 9 .10 [64] to 18.12 [120] with the best for the visitors : F. Gleason [1986 Carnival player, N .R .] M . McCarthy and Morelli, and for Old Brighton, J. Priestley [5 goals], Gedge, Epstein . 100 games to AJAX star Hen ry Ritterman who started at AJAX as a 15 year old, went to M .H .S .O.B., then tried his luck at playing for Caulfield and Oakleigh, before being reinstated . Hen ry, twin brother to former captain, Michael has been an outstanding clubman . Collegians welcomed two Wesley schoolboys, Jim Bennet and Stuart Eason, who both "acquitted themselves magnificently, figuring in the best players and kicking three goals and one goal respectively" . [Both went on to be selected in the Carnival team to go to Perth in 1982. N .R . ] 10 YEARS AGO - 197 6 Umpire Philip Rowell went into the history book as the first V .A .F.A . field umpire selected to officiate in a Carnival series hosted by another state . It was the second carnival for Philip as he had umpired in the 1973 Carnival held in Melbourne . 350 games to Power House veteran, Peter Hutchinson, spread over 20 years, 7 club best and fairest awards, 3 premierships, club captain, Victorian selection, and in 1972, Amateur Footballer of the Year at St . Bernard's Grand Final Breakfast . [Peter coached this year's interstate team in Hobart, and proved not only to be a good coach but also 'snorer extraordinaire' - N .R . Ivanhoe paid tribute to their skipper, Bill McWhinnie, "the little general" who ran out for his 200th game. Captain for 7 years, victorian team in 1970, club best and fairest for 3 years . Bill was noted for his fierce determination in play and his service to the club off the ground . Collegians, in a battle for 4th place in 'B' Section with Old Paradians, had an easy, 10 goal victory. The victors were in command all day, and their accuracy, 18.9, gave O.P. 8.10 no chance . Best were Roach, Wagstaff, M . Permezel [Coll .] and Wyons, Telleffson, Kendall [O.Paradians] . Old Haileyburians [C] were beaten for the first time when Hampton Rovers triumphed by 2 goals in an exciting last quarter, after trailing by 4 points at the last change. Final scores wer 13 .11 and 11 .11 with the best, B . Bird, Clarke, C . A great clubman, Bruce was secretary and commt. teeman for many seasons in the early years of the club. 15 YEARS AGO - 197 1 St . Bernard's scored a last minute win over Caulfield Grammarians when they kicked 3 goals in the last 5 minutes . It was Caulfield's second defeat in succession as the previous week they had gone down to Ormond by 20 points . No doubt about the umpires - real sense of values' After two years of "we must have a board for our important notices", architect Trevor Rowe produced a beautiful work of art, green with gold lettering . Coburg [2nd in 'A' Section] forged ahead of Melbourne High [on top] and went on to an easy win, 8 .9 to 3 .6. Faster, and scouting bettewr, with Norm Beattie and Phil Parkes the stars, Coburg adapted well to the wet and muddy conditions. Kew [on top in 'B' Section] lost their final game for the season when they went down to Ivanhoe [3rd] by 21 points . Elsternwick held a reunion of their 1925 premiership team with 22 players and officials in attendance, including Peter Mountjoy [captain], Norm M L cDonald [Secretary for 25 years], Chas Loughr>y, Alex Mart in, Eddie Shaw, Clar rie Williams, "Tuea" Heard, Les Morris, Leo Walsh, Ha ro ld MacDon r Id [goal umpire] and Frank Martin [boundary umpire] , 100 games at Old Haileybu ry to Peter "Circles" MacFariane and Brian Henderson . Ajax were the only undefeated team - 12 straight wins in 'E' Section, two games ahead of Glenhuntly while Old Ivanhoe and Rese rvoir Old Boys made up the four. 35 YEARS AGO - 195 1 The first Amateur Carnival to be staged in Victoria was held at St . Kilda Cricket Ground with Canberra making up 5 with Victoria, Sou - h Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia . In a perculiar draw, Victoria finally only played two matches - winning both, and kicking 39 .18 to Tasmania's 4.4 and 18.20 to Canberra's 2 .5.

South Australia went down by 11 points to The Australian Amateur team to play the V .F .A. Canberra on the opening day and no doubt this loss in Canberra was picked at the close of carnival with upset the draw . Victorian's Doug Arnold and Peter Cox, captain and A name of interest - in W.A .'s team was Billy Snedvice-captain respectively, 13 other Victorians, 3 from den 24, 6 .0 ., 13 .10 [today's Speaker in the House W .A ., and 2 each from S .A . and Tasmania . of Representatives] .

cARNIYAi . FIN A L REVIEW by Ross Boot h

:'Victoria defeated S .A . by 38 points in the final of the 17th A .A .F.C. Carnival in Adelaide last Saturday . The win avenged the defeat by S.A . in the Carnival in Melbourne last year. Only 10 of the side which played against the V.F.A. remained and only Paul Considine had played carnival football before. It was a young side with an average age of about 21, physically strong and with a very determined attitude. 'Victoria lined up like this : B. Conti [NOB], Schober [Coll], Lopes [StK] HB .Fuller [Scotch], Considine [NOB], Spillane [OPs ] C. Smith [Scotch], Phil Mehrten [Orm], Kingston [Orm) HF.Adams [Ivan), Keenan [B[T], Berzins [Caul ] F. Gleeson fOPs], O'Brien Xavs , Palmer [B/T) Foil, Yandelf (Blues], Ryan DLS~, Meehan [StK] I/C. Herman [Coll], Witts [OMs], Barnes [Orm] Wallis and Gust [Blues] and Gilmore [B/T] and Bickford [Coll] were the unlucky players to miss the final . Victoria started the match brilliantly. Yandell palmed the ball down to Meehan who broke out of the centre and sent the ball along to O'Brien who took a very strong mark and goaled with a beautiful drop punt . I found it very difficult to conceal a smile! O'Brien really stamped himself on the game with two more goals from strong marks and the Vics led by 9 points at quarter time. The early part of the second quarter saw Victoria gain the upper hand and go to a 4 goal lead with O'Brien adding another 3. But late in the second quarter S.A . came back after some positional changes and rattled the Victorians to take the lead by a point . The Victorians were able to wrest the lead back with a lovely goal by Meehan just before half time, but they looked a little shakey. John Fisher made a plea for more consistent performances from the smaller forwards and rovers and he got it in the third quarter, but from the whole team . Michael Lopes really lifted the Victorians with some strong marking . Peter Ryan found his legs and give more bite around the ground . During the quarter Lopes broke his thumb, Spillane had contact lense trouble and Barnes hurt his knee but still the Vics were able to keep the upper hand and they went into the last term with a 4 goal lead . It was a dogged last quarter and Phil Mehrten revelled in it, getting better and better as the game progressed . The Victorian defence held firm and allowed the S .A .s just one goal in the last term . Suffice to say there was not a poor player in the V.A .F.A . side but I feel I should mention some special efforts . Nine of the team were selected in the All-Australian team and also the coach John Fisher. They are Spillane ~C], Adams, Considine, Fuller, Keenan, Mehrten, O'Brien, Ryan and Schober . Cameron O'Brien, won the medal or the best player over the Carnival . Simon Beasley won it 10 years ago in Adelaide when playing for W .A . ! The Victorian defence was really superb. Schober at full back kept his opponent goalless - that speaks for itself . conti was an attacking back pocket who ran well, tackled ferociously and used the ball well . Fuller was used as a "stopper" and he had his opponent taken from the ground in the third quarter. Considine was tough as ever and Spillane was a beautiful rebounder. Lopes added that little spark in the air. Other significant features of the game were the on-ball palyers, in pa rt icular Yandell, Ryan and Meh rt en . Mike Yandell won in the ruck, Peter Ryan gave the side some much needed legs on the bail and Phil Meh rten was a tower of strength gett ing the ball from the centre. Up forward there was a lot to be positive about . When the ball went forward there was Ray Berzins who was menacing though he missed some shots at goal, but there was also the mercuricual Cameron O'Brien . He left Xavie i Collegbe in 1984, spent last year and the early part of 1986 at Collingwood . How could they afford to let him go? His marking was superb but that is just half the story. He kicked 8 .1 and every goal was a booming drop punt - exciting to watch! He would have kicked more goals only he was moved out to centre half forward during the third qua rter. The final point that needs to be made is that the group became tightly knit over the week and were very well handled by John Fisher, Brian Bourke and the team of selectors and suppo rt staff. The team was gracious in victory and a credit to the V.A . F A. in the way they conducted themselves both on and off the field. Very well done!

THE SCORE ON THE SCORE S Some clubs, particularlyin the highersections, seem to think they have the right to ring the Press Correspondent early on Saturday evening for scores in other matches in the section . Our phone is far too busy from 4 .45 p .m . till 9 p .m . to be able to give these scores - very often we haven't even got them - and any request will in future be turned down . There are several ways of obtaining scores of other games in your section - from R,, :_Iio Statons 3DB, 3AW and 3L0, or by phoning the other grounds . GEORGE McTAGG .= .3T Press Correspondent .

150 GAMES TO DE LA'S DICK WILLIAMS Congratulations to Richard " Dick" Williams o f De La Salle Old Collegians who played his 150th game against Caulfield Grammarians recently. Since starting in the U19's in 1978 Dick ha s played 93 senior, 37 reserve and 20juniorgames in his tally of 150 . Honours have included the best in the 1982 finals trophy, and being a member of the 1980 reserves, 1983 and 1984 senior premiership sides . He was also a member of the 1978 Under

19, 1982 and 1985 Senior runners-up sides, and no doubt the memories of these defeats help go after that extra step to capture the Premiership . Injuries have interrupted his career, however Dick has been able to bounce back and be a versatile player, able to play in a variety of positions as requested by his coaches over the years . ',Nell done on your fine achievement and everyone at De La hope you can go on and play many more games in the blue and gold jumper .
