Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century. Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world . Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain .

One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S .A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Well, can anyone stop the Collegians machine from rolling on? That must be the question being asked after their humiliation of Ormond by 98 points in the 'match of the day' . It was an even first quarter but the Lions got right on top in the second term and led by 22 points at half time . thereafter Collegians added another 14 goals to Ormond's 2 . Collegians were simply too skilful . Their handpassing and footpassing was almost breathtaking, such was its precision . But, they're not only pretty side . Ask Andrew Hill, Phil Kingston or Russell Barnes who came off second best in tough physical clashes . Even Ric Schober was not able to get out of Stuart Hinchen's way and copped a cut eye! Collegians slotted the ball about the forward line with consumate ease, and they had to because Ormond full back Martin Crampton had an effective blanket over leading goalkicker Ian Roberts. Roberts managed just one goal and that was from a free! But Collegians had other forwards capable of kicking goals - Steve Bickford ( 5), Tony Baum (4) and Peter Wolff (3) . Ormond were made to look miserable by the Lions . Only Phil Mehrten shone out, yet Collegians named their centreman Andy Ingleton as their best. Collegians now have won 10 in a row. I think the only ones who can beat them now are themselves ! University Blues are effectively out of the race for the four now after their 18 point loss to NOBs . The ground eras surprisingly dry and made for a good game . Blues face a 5 goal deficit before they scored . They fought back in the second term to lead by a goal at the major break but North had just a little more after that . There were some fine individual performances, in particular from Don M clnnes at full forward for Blues . His strong leading and marking netted him 9 goals. And Peter W right and Paul Considine were telling in the ruck for North . Caulfield Grammarians continued on their winning way, their third on end came at the expense of the struggling Marcellin at Bulleen by 26 points. The Eagles led at half time by 3 points but were never in it after that . Respective centrement John Kanis (Caulfield) and Chris Carr (Marcellin) were fine players. Caulfield might now survive but Marcellin's prospects look very bleak ! Bulleen-Templestowe moved into second spot with a 37 point win over Ivanhoe who only managed 4 goals in the low scoring game . Bulleen got 4 early goals and never looked back . The Bullant half back line of Peter George, Phil Espechied (Laurie's a big rap for him!) and Steve Krygger was supreme. But by far, the best man on the ground was Ivanhoe's rover Ross Clements, even according to Bulleen watchers! Ivanhoe need desperately to find some form if they are to stay in A Scetion next year . Old Scotch scored the upset of the round with their 7 point win over De La Sal e . It was a significant win i n that it was in the wet, away from Yarra Park and over the strong De La combination . I think Scotch have enough resolve and skill to stay in A Section in 1987. John Pollard knew Scotch were better than they were showing and feared they might come good against De La . He was right! ! VOL . 86 No . 16 3

After watching Collegians' third quarter effort against Ormond am now convinced that they will play c'r for the A Section Grand Final on September 21st . Their opponent?I I've nd idea and on last weeks showing by the Lions would it really matter? Like many Amateur football supporters I've found it difficult to accept thal Collegians are really that good, for so many of us have seen these brilliant displays in home & home matches before, only to have viewed their fade out in the finals, especially last season . However I believe 1986 will be differen t For a start the recruitment of Schober & Bickford steadiness and experience. Ormond has doubts oee has added some real strength to their goal to goal Barnes & Kingston and will sorely miss the injured line and they have also developed such precision with Hill and I seriously doubt that their forward line is cur hand and foot that their forwards have eenbabel to rently capable of booking a winning score. score with ridiculous ease in so many matches this season . In fact the Lions have scored 27 more goals Bulleen-Templestowe faces a real danger-ga m at Albert Park against a confident and vastly impi than their nearest rivals (in terms or scoring), North ed Caulfield . The return of key players from injury O.B, and perhaps of equal or greater importance is and the confidence gained from 3 successive victorie~ that there is such flexibility about the team . Returnwill present the bullants with a formidable tad ing to last Saturday for a moment it was hard to believe .However its one they're up to and with youngsters the manner in which Ormond who were a real Paul Lockhart, Steve K ry gger & Phil Espenchied challenge was cast aside, and despite the fact that M touch plus the known ability of the Keen n ns, in fine leading goalkicker Ian Roberts was completely Gilmores, Smyths, Asdagis, Braniganu & outplayed by Martin Crompton . It is going to take De ortes, a combine victo ry is the cnly a most disciplined effort to stop the Collegians runprediction . ners, and they have plenty, and after watching the way in which Stuart Hencken went about his day's work I don't agree with my collea gue Ross that Old Scotch will beat Pforth, althoughBooth their is obviously some protection for them . congratulations certainly go to the Cardinals for their great Today the Lions will be lining up for their 11th win win over its hoodoo side De La, last week. on end when they meet Ivanhoe at the Boulevard . When they last played in round 6 on 17th May ColToday, however, is another matter and P' -ins mobile big man strength of Considine, Wri i: & legains met a far more in-form Ivanhoe and won by B rown plus the recent good form of Egan, Cc .:i & 106 points! Today it is Collegians who are in top form Turnbull should enable North to notch up another and even at Ivanhoe which is not a happy hunting ground for many sides they should win and win well . vital win, although they had better not take it easy for Ivanhoe managed only 4 goals last week and will as has been said for most of the season, the 'Scotnot find scoring any easier against the Lions excellent chiles' are capable with the players they got, of defence. The versatility of Andrew Ingleton who has beating most sides in A Section . taken over in the pivot from the injured Peter Kahn Univ. Blues are at home to M arcellin who are learhas been a great boon to the side and their many ning the hard way that you don't win games playing pronged attack will ensure that a winning scoore is one half of football . The Blues have had a reasonable registered . Ivanhoe can expect to control the ruck season and are only a couple of players short of bewhere Howard should outjump Pollock . However ing a strong contender. However as they are will out one of the strenghts of the Lions' big man is his of relegation worries they will have no difficulty in acmobility and around the ground marking, and ruc k counting for M arcellin this afternoon . rovers Herman and Hoyle are past masters at feeding off him and setting up the play . Well, what about Therry ? To many it was an upset Last seasons grand finalists Ormond & De La Salle win but not to Bernie Dunn and his players. Today clash in what will be a pressure game from go to wo and one that could well decide the final's chances they'll move even closer to the four by beating Old Brighton at South Road, never an easy assignment . of these two proud clubs . Players, coaches and supporters would be acutely aware of just how vital a win Old Xaverians are looking forward to their first trip is today. Ormond won the early game on May 17th to headquarters this season and they must be odds when they came from behind to score by 13 points . on to kick the sweep against 0. M : s, who are in the Today I've got the feeling its De La's turn foor vichorrors and who are indeed fortunate that St. Bartory. They won the corresponding game last season nards cant seem to break through for that elusive 5th in atrocious conditions which hindered all football skills win . With relegation staring the Dark Blues in the face and as the ground can be expected to be better than let's hope they can put up a reasonable showing that todav I believe De La will have that ibt more against the B Section leaders today . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986

Univ. Blacks will face its biggest test for some time :ravels to Bundoora to take on an in-form parade . Given great conditions its bound to be a grea t th the Blacks big man strength and mobile d line up against the team work and runnin g ~_rvl ~j of Parade. At the Garvey its the locals for me. gt . Bernard's has the big show of moving clear relegation today. They meet a ragged an d --mewhat demoralized St . Kilda CBOC for whom ~; all gone wrong . Only 2 points separated the side s May 17th and this will be an added spur for the ome side to register its 5th win of the season . and now to the big one. Parkside at home t o Fawkner and for an added bonus for spectators nigh stakes as a place in the four awaits the winners . ;•,ent against the Devils last week on a hunch which roved correct . Today I'm going against the m „,~ause this is Fawkner's big chance. They must win : :)-jay if they are to feature in the finals, whereas Parkside can lose and aided by a very favourable ,in home can still make the grade . It's sure to be a ar e :ty hard game with no beg pardons asked or given and I feel a more desparate Fawkner can tip the ,~ameside out .

As Kew"s record of late has been faultless (they've iwon their last 6) i've enough faith to go for the locals in what will be a top game . Old Trinity will move back to second by beating Banyule a result on which the I' > : : ,_ Old Haileybury brains-trusts are banking . The ~,it _s' have returned to their early season brilliance and I just wonder whether they've peaked a fraction too early . Still Andres Disney knows Amateur Football pretty well and I'm sure he's been quite happy with their recent efforts . St . Kevins put in a much improved effort last week and I think they can win their first game since Round 5 when they beat Banyule by 10 points . Their opponents M elbourne High have also been down for some time, their last win cooming on June 21st when they defeated the Rovers by 22 points. This will be a test of character and I think the Skobbers can improve on their Round 6 draw. Hampton Rovers can be expected to push AJAX for much of the game but as they lack the overall balance and skill of their visitors AJAX are sure to rebound with a win today. In the remaining game Old Halley bury have too much at stake to slip up against Old Camberwell for whom the 1987 die is already cast. Old Haileybury will be looking for a big wiin to lift its poor percentage up to that of Banyule and Kew. The fight for the four is now on in earnest and after studying the remaining games it seems that in A B & C Section the 1986 finalists will not be decided until 5 p.m . on August 23rd !

Kew's moment of truth has arrived and to play in 7ire finals they must at least win their home games cas their remaining games are against the top 4, exept for St . Kevins. Thomastown must win too or ose what will no doubt be the vital double chance .

,o 200 TO POPULAR ANZ BA N K BIG MAN Warren Tuckey todayjoinsa veryelite band i n playing his 200th gameforANZagainstCommon;realth Bank . Warren or "Bigwa" or "Tucks", as fTe is more affectionately known, first played ,, lith the club in 1971 so with various absences through overseas trips and injuries has taken longer than normal to reach this important milestone in his career . Known as the "Gentle Giant", in his early days because of his lack of aggression, Warren has changed dramatically over lhe years to perhaps now at times become a ttle too agressive . One of the most popular members of our club some of the ','Big Fellas" many achievements include many consistent years of voting in our best and fairest awards, social commitee member in 1981, social committee chairman and assistantcoach in 1982, reserves captain-coach in 1983 and 1984 and reserves leading goalkicker in 1985 . Warren was rewarded for his fine service to the club with the ultimate award Life Membership at the end of 1984 . This year with the help of his recently acquired wife Christine "Wa" has taken on the most difficult job of Chairman of the Match Committee a task he is performing with distinction . Congratulations "Mate" from all of us on this fine achievement, we know that you're ageing body has all but had enough, we all hope we can reward you for your efforts by coming away with a big win today and a big night tonight . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986

Two 50 's At Brighto n Graeme Drewe and Andrew Wittey have recorded their 50th games for Old Brighton . Graeme achieves the milestone today. He is a rugged determined player despite his light build . Andrew reached 50 games last week . He is a dashing player who loves taking the big mark . Congratulations fellas, we hope that the next 50 come up a little more regularly.

50th Up At Balaclava A belated congratulations from all at Balaclava to Peter Scicluna on the occasion of his 50th game last week against West Brunswick. Peter is a quiet man off the field, but he lets his ability speak for him on the field. A very skilful centremanlrovedfiorward pocket, Peter uses his great pace to advantage once the ball is in his control . A very good mark for his size, Peter hates to kick a goal whenever he is in range . His current form in the centre is excellent, and he will be an important factor in the Reserves ambitions in the finals this year. Peter has played the bulk of his games in the reserves, he has been in and out of the senior side over the years since 1984, but he is presently one of the seconds players putting a great deal of pressure on senior players. Peter obviously enjoys his football, and if his present form is any indication, he should paly many more senior games with the club in the future, at the moment we are enjoying his skills and team play in the seconds . Well done Pete, we are all looking forward to many more fine games from you . 5

D SECTION The top sides consolidated their positions and further widened their gap to the other six sides . Leading sides Monash, Preston and Balaclava all had big victories over North Brunswick, Heathe rton and West Brunswick respectively, Old Mentonians had to battle hard to defeat Old Ivanhoe by seventeen points . Power House accuracy enabled them to tie with Coburg in the closest match last week . E SECTIO N Peninsula moved to second by defeating State Bank at Elsternwick Park . St. Bede's moved closer to a final's berth with a big victory over Old Geelong while Bu!leen United kept their unblemished record intact against Brunswick . F SECTIO N A .N .Z . Bank vindicated myconfidence in them by defeating F .I .T .O .B . (More relaxing Fridays are neededTony!!!) .Commonwea!thBankbroug ht St . Leonard's celebrations to an end by recording an effortless win . Doveton caused a surprise by defeating third placed St . Andrew's . Leaders Old Essendon comfortably defeated La Trobe while second placed U .H .S .O .B . lost to Whitefriars by two goals . G SECTIO N Monash Whites defeated E!tham College while lowly Williamstown had a point to spare against the depleted Parkside team . Leaders Old Carey had an easy win over GTV-9 . JUNIOR 1 Lowly Banyule surprised by comfortably defeating University Blues. Ormond confirmed their position with a big win over Old Scotch . The four has changed again this week after some surprising results . M .H .S .O .B . by defeating Bulleen- Templestowe moved into third spot while the 'Bulls dropped from second to fourth . Old Xaverians victory over De La Salle took them to second while it meant De La dropped to fifth . As expected Marcellin defeated North Old Boys to keep their final's hopes high . JUNIOR 2 In the only results available leaders Collegians defeated Therry and St. r3ernard's had a big win against the Blacks . 8

JUNIOR 3 What a game it must have been at Ivanhoe where the locals went down to Old Paradians by a solitary point (my selsction wasn't far out) Other games in the section recorded expected results when Caulfield, St . Kilda and Wil!i- nstown accounted for Old Camberwell, Ham;-.ton Rovers and Monash Blues respectively . PREVIEW OF JULY 26 MATCHES D SECTIO N Long standing rivals Coburg and West Brunswick meet at the De Cherie oval . At home and with a final's berth still possible Coburg should win . The main game of the round sees Preston visit Balaclava. As the double chance could well hinge on today's game each side will be keen to win . Very little separates the sides but at home I lean towards Balaclava . Power House journey to Old Mentonians and there is no way they could be chosen to win . Monash Blues have now emerged as the section leaders and at home today they will be far too skilled for Old Ivanhc a . Heathe rton will prove too strong for No rth Brunswick who visit them today . E SECTIO N Brunswick journey to Clayton and despite Brunswick's more accurate forwards Clayton is my selection . The section's first and tenth placed sides meet atBu!ieen United . I am unable to find any reason why University Reds could win . Elsternwick will find the vast spaces of Como Park strange and despite Old Geelong's lowly position I believe they will win and thus try to avoid relegation . Peninsula at home to St . Bede's should be able to win and thus make their finals berth more secure . Form points to State Ban" being strong enough to defeat Williamstown the winner will receive a reward - State Bank the double chance ; Williamstown E Section in 1987 . Given State Bank's long history of poor performances away from Albert Park I select'the Seagulls . E SECTIO N At Harry Trott the big banks will clash . I will "stick with the strength" and select Commonwealth to defeat A .N .Z . Whitefriars travel to Footscray Institute and should repeat their May 17 victory . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1983

G SECTIO N A depleted Parkside wi!I we!come Monash Whites. The Students wi!I prove too strong even at Pitcher Park . Eltham College at home, will provetoostrongforW111iamstown .GTV-9welcome O!d Carey and after a hard fought game ; Carey ;rill emerge victorious . JUNIOR 1 The bottom sides Oid Scotch and Banyule meet in Yarra Park. Winning form is good form so I select Banyule . 150 Games at Ormon d AI! at Ormond Amateur Football club wou!d like to congratulate Steve Morris on reaching the 150 game milestone for the c!ub today. Steve commenced p!aying with Ormond in the Junior sides where he made his mark by winning the best and fairest for the under 15's in 1971 . In 1976 Steve moved into the senior ranks where he has p!ayed main!y on a ha!f back f!ank distinguishing himse!f with his fine p!ay, c!ose checking and never say die attitude. Steve has unfortunate!y had his share of injuries whick cost him the opportunity of piaying in the 1985 Premiership side . Not to be deterred by this setback Steve has fought back and we al! hope he will have his opportunity of piaying in an Ormond Premiership side in 1986. Weli done Steve, we wish you all the best for today and the future, and hope you continue playing many more games at Ormond . U.H .S .O.B. - 100 Games to "Torpedo Bob" In 1979 Bob Leared first graced the training track at Brens Oval . AII were amazed at the skill level dispiayed . Bob can now actually make contact with the ball . This can be put down to his feverish desire to train at all times. Bob aiong with other legends (Ted Whitten etc .) has deve!oped his check-side, spiral, tumb!e "torpedo"to perfection . Bob now in his eighth year at Uni High has been an exceilent worker on and off the fie!d . Any jobs that arise on a Saturday Bob willing!y filis the gap (Runner, boundary, timekeeper) . The Xaverians will consolidate their second p!ace by winning the game . Buileen-Tempiestowe will beat No rth Old Boys in Royai Park and stay with the leaders . JUNIOR 2 St . Dear John ,

It was most pleasing to see the successful outcome of your recent campaign to Adelaide . Congratulations on winning the carnival series and resuming your rightful place as Australian Amateur champions .

I~ar Peter ,

Congratulations on maintaining some of the dignity of Victorian football at the senior level by winning the Australian Amateurs Football Carnival in Adelaide !

Please convey my congratulations to your Executive and to Peter French . Well done .

Yours sincerely,

We watched the results with great interest and could appreciate your feeling of exhilaration after your final victory . Unfortunately, we could not do the same with our S .A. and W .A . counterparts but at least the VAFA and the Teal Cup team kept the flag flying and I guess we can claim Australian-wide victory on the score of two wins out of three !

Well done and please pass on our congratulations to all concerned .

Yours sincerely ,

ALAN SCHWAB EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

An Easey 150 At Heathe rto n Marshall "Nice'N" Easey played his 150th game against Monash Blues on the 12th July . Marsh has been a fine contributor to our club over ten years . His ball skills and pace have not altered over the years and topped off a great year last year when he burnt in our senior Grand Final victory over Preston . In his earlier years he was a consistent and active participant in the Annual Trip Away . His drinking bouts are now few and far between but still enjoys the odd ale at the club. Happily married with 21/2 kids he like many others finds it hard to fit in the time for footy but has only missed one year since he started . Always one to tell and listen to a good joke he enjoys a good time and we hope he has a lot of years left at Heatherton .

100 Games at Ormon d All at Ormond Amateur Football Club would like to congratulate Paul "Freddy" Forsyth on playing 100 games for the club today . Freddy commenced his career at Ormond in the Under 19's before progressing to senior ranks . Freddy has since played in both the seniors and reserve teams, mainly as a forward/ruck rover, where his receiving approach to the game has fooled many an opponent, enabling Freddy to be a regular scorer of goals . Freddy was a member of the 1985 Senior Premiership side previously having played in Premiership sides for Ormond in the under 19's and reserves . Congratulations Freddy, we wish you well for today and the future and hope you continue playing many more games at Ormond .

100 Up For Beds Greg All at St. Bedes congratulate G reg Connolly on reaching his 100th game, played against Old Geelong last week . On and off the field Greg has displayed great committment and a maturity beyond his years . Through his career Greg has improved as a footballer and has developed into a reliable attacking defender . He represented the amateurs in last years combined DE grade side and performed well . Other highlights include the 1982 Reserve Premiership as a young player . Off the ground Greg has also been a great contributor being the clubs youngest ever President during 1983 and 84. Now that the club is 'becoming strong again with a large committee, Greg can concentrate fully on his football . Well done Greg on your achievements and indispensible service . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986

50 Game s All at Heatherton would like to congratulate the most popular player in Amateur Football Dar rel Reiger. Opposition players and supporters regularly cheer him on a Saturday afternoon as he goes about playing his own brand of football . This gambling "Jeff Fenech" of football has made and broken many friendships during his illustrious career. Possibly the best looking head in the Reiger family his consistent appearances at training have improved the worst kicking style ever seen . Darryl had a great year last year, and played in the senior Grand Final win . Being a non stop goer on the field has made him a valuable player at Heatherton, and if we had 18 goers every week like him we would be higher up the ladder . Again congratulations Darryl from all players and supporters from the club . 9

MICHAEL ARMSTRONG FINALLY REACHES 100 It's been a long, slow haul, but Michael Armstron g finally reaches the 100 games mark for Old Geelong this week . Mike started with the Club back in 1974, and was a member of the Reserves Grand Final team of that year . A couple of years later he became a regular Firsts player before moving to live in Japan

for a number of seasons . More recently, teaching commitments in Geelong have limited his appearances to a handful of games a year, but today he finally gets the ton . Well done, Mike, and thanks for the perseverance . We also congratulate Mike Goold & Andrew McMillan for reaching their 50th games today.

G .9F, ("I'ION 1 50 Umpire -'f of all umpires, fe congratulate John . who will o fficiate in his 150th match toc_ % John, since joining the amateurs from the V.F . Which tall, dark haired, almost handsome senior umpire, is making a habit of : After umpiring his match on a Saturday going back to fellow umpires places, drinking all their expensive port, staying overnight and then disappearing before the hosts have arisen . We want to know if he has a problem . So we issue this warning to all fellow umpires and footballers Beware who you invite for a night cap!!! ! ~*

John says the 1985 "A" Section Grand Fina l was his greatest highlight as it was the best football match he has umpired in . John is an ornament to the umpiring fraternity, is always prepared to help other umpires, young and old and is one of the hardest workers on the track and as his record shows, is one of the best umpires in Amateur Football . Well done John and we hope you will be umpiring fora few more years to come .

THE ~t :iJ ; i - ~;r i's, _ Some clubs, particularly in the higher sections, seem to think they have the right to ring the Press Correspondent early on Saturday evening for scores in other matches in the section . Our phone is far too busy from 445 p .m . till 9 p .m . to be able to give these scores - very often we haven't even got them - and any request will in future be turned down . There are several ways of obtaining scores of other games in your section - from Radio Statons 3DB , 3AW and 3L0, or by phoning the other grounds.

SE; UREPAIRES FOR TYRES Today we bring you the second article by Barry Richardson on his thoughts on Amateur Football : The article was headed "That Same Old Feeling" . It is game day . It is 10 .45 Saturday morning and I am in an Adelaide motel, feeling reasonably relaxed after a 30-minute run and breakfast . I have read the Melbourne papers, feel a bit despondent about the economy and yet another club St . Kilda - seems to be perilously close to the wall . I have an hour until the bus' leaves for the beautiful Adelaide Oval, almost certianly a very ,,vet Adelaide Oval . It has rained buckets in the past couple of days . Why Adelaide Oval? Well, I am the physiotherapist for the State Amateur team and there has been a carnival in the city of churches . Today is the final game against South Australia, both teams having defeated WA and Tasmania . I am feeling a bit nervous . Strange, one would think that, after all these years in football, that it would be an absent emotion . Not so . Why am I feeling nervous? I think it is because I feel for the lads who are about to take on a team who will definitely start favorites . The SA boys have looked pretty good to me . The game is very important to a lot of very nic people . I hope we can win it for all those who do so much foramateurfootball . There is big rivalry over here too . South Australians just love to knock off the Vics, be it League football, amateur football or marbles . If I am feeling nervous, what about the lads? They have been together for a number of weeks on the training track and have been together in the hotel for a week . They would be getting to know each other pretty well by now and would be worrying about their individual perfromances . The fear of failure is a very strong motivation, a fear generated by not wanting to let your mates down . I always welcomed the feeling on match days, even though it is not necessarily pleasant . The butterflies, almost a sick feeling in the pit of the stomach, always heralded to me that what I was about to do was important, that I had a responsibilty to myself and to others to give the contest my best shot. I reckon the Victorian lads are a fine bunch . I am sure that they would all have the sick feeling now. It is three hours to game time . I envy them the feeling a little, though - the dry mouth, the butterflies, the adrenalin starting to pump, the

fear of failure, the hope of success . Everyone isfrightened of thatsituation where the hard physical clash is imminent . It takes courage to get that ball or journey into the unknown, running with the flighto of the ball, your eyes fixed on it . There are unknown dangers ahead . But you are all in it together now, so draw strength from each other . It is a warrior sport this one, one of the last bastions where physical strength is permitted and indeed condoned . It is possible to beat your opponent by the sheer intensity of your physical presence . You can lean on him, try out his mettle in a headto-head confrontation for the ball, tackle him vigorously and it is all permitted in the rules . It is a battle for supremacy . You will need to summon all your mental and physical strength to win this one . Yourcoach will help . John fisher is of the old Hawthorn mould in the Glenferrie Days . It was no place for faint hearts there, I can tell you . His coaching has been terrific this week, with emphasis on the physical approach rather than the pretty stuff . Good basic footy is the way to bet South Australia . The tougher the better. They have very good skills and can slice you up into little pieces if you give them any latitude at all . Your coach knows this, so he will do his job in emphasising again pre-match all these points . Soon the bus ride to the ground - usuall y silent - and everyone is lost in his won thoughts . Look at the ground and watch the other two teams playing the curtain-raiser . You go into the locker rooms, change into the battle gear, tape pesty fingers and ankles (here I can help a bit) . Final talk from the coach . Try to put everything into action . Concentrate-bard, push the body hard . Hopefully the reward is winning . If not, make sure that you can look yourself in the eye next day as a man who has given it an honest go . Good luck lads . Sunday night . . . resultwasa winforthe Vics . In a very tough contest, every player contributed to the victory and there was wild excitement from all connected with the party . It was an absolute pleasure to be connected with such a fine bunch of men . It is something that they can look back at with pride for the rest of their lives. Vince Lombardi, legendarycoach of the Green Bay Packers said : "Man's greatest moment is when he lies upon the field of battle exhausted, but victorious" . He was rightand the lads earned the right to that moment . Well done .
