In the clash between 4th and 5th placed, No rt h Old Boys emerged victorious over Ormond by 46 points and in so doing moved into 3rd place . Ormond lies languishing outside the four. North started well with the breeze and then were able to bottle up play on the Zoological flank when Ormond had the wind . North President Steve Hibbert managed 4 goals but it was Norths defenders who won them them game - back pockets Peter Symes and Mark Malone, flanker Gerard B rown and Tony Egan used at full back . Ormond's half backs Craig Clark, David MacDonald and Russell Barnes tried hard but it was Ormond's inability to score which brought about their downfall . Three successive losses is not encouraging for a team vying for the finals . The surprise of the day was Marcellin's 32 point win over Bulleen-Templestowe . After an even first half the Eagles broke away in the 3rd quarter. Bulleen-Temp. was weakened by the loss of ruckman Tony Keenan with a recurrence of a shoulder injury . This allowed Marcellin's Matt Getson to take control in the ruck and bring rover Rick Delavira into the game. BulleenTemplestowe is badly hit by injury at present but two losses to bottom sides over the past fortnight is also not very promising for a side hoping to make the Grand Final . - De La Salle is finding a little consistency and with its 44 point win at No 4 Oval over Ivanhoe their 2nd spot on the ladder . Ivanhoe is the only side in the Section who is finding it difficult to consolidated win a game . Their last win was a lacing of North Old Boys whom they meet this week at Elsternwick in what must be a do-ordie effort . Ivanhoe's second half form against De La Salle was more encouraging than their first - but it would need to be because the De's had 13 goals on the board to the 'Hoes 1 at half time . Isn't Mick Greene an important part of De La Salle's game? Blues played Old Scotch at Yarra Park and led for most of the day before succumbing in the last 15 minutes to go down by 21 points . Last year's A Section Best and Fairest Andy Smith played on Don Mclnnes and held the full forward to 3 goals . Scotch captain Fergus Kiel was impassable at centre half back in the last part of the game . Blues has lost 5 games in succession since Bulleen-Templestowe overran them in the last term during Carnival week . Scotch goes from strength to strength . Top side Collegians started slowly against Caulfield Grammarians but quickly showed their supremacy in the second quarter with a 9 goal term . Their 59 point win extends their winning sequence to 12 . Ian Roberts was back in form at the spearhead with 7 goals for the Lions, and at the other end Simon Williams held the dangerous Alan Nalder to just 1 goal . Collegians rovers Keith Parson and Jeff Lemon created havoc amongst Caulfield despite the best efforts of 'Fields big man David Matthews . Given the way the season has unfolded who would be bold enough to suggest the 'four' and relegation candidates . Ormond can still make it . And relegation? It seems Ivanhoe is doomed but if Marcellin can keep winning then one of University Blues, Caulfield Grammarians or Old Scotch will be in danger . It will be an absorbing lead in to the finas. I This week I like : A Sectio n Ivanhoe v NORTH OLD BOYS (Elsternwick) Ormond v UNIVERSITY BLUE S OLD SCOTCH v Marcelli n Caulfield Grammarians v DE LA SALLE Bulleen-Templestowe v COLLEGIANS

Peter French Previews Today's A, B and C Section Matcliec,
I thought that I would start today's review with B Section as last Saturday's blockbuster between Old Xaverians and Old Paradians was fresh in my mind and also because Ross Booth shares my opinion that this week's round is chock full of interest wich makes selection very difficult . To return breifly to last Saturday. What a great advertisement for Amateur Football the game way . Two proud and successful clubs whose membership of the V .A .F.A . dates back to the 1920's were battling it out for top spot . A more than reasonable crowd of wives, children, mothers, fathers, girlfriends, old boys, reserves players and the clergy were all in good voice and none was let down by the game which saw the Old Paradians deservedly hang on to win by just 4 points. We can all expect a great second semi next month'with the home and away scoreline reading one all . Looking now at today's B Section matches I expect Old Xaverians to bounce back after the loss and pave the way for Parkside to return to the top 4 by defeating Uni Blacks . The Blacks has lost it's last two games and today will find the most talented side in the Section eager to convince both it's supporters and itself that it is the top side in B Section . The Blacks were most disappointing against St . Kilda who at that stage were also in something of a slump and the likely return of Billy Denton whose strength has been missed plus the high glying Nick Wilton augurs well for the Xavs for whom Came ron O'Brien can be expected to really turn it on after a pretty ordinary game last week . Fawkner has done everything right of late and even Lou Richards in his heyday would not select Old Mel6urnians against it's visitors today . Seriously they could play this game in Archie Saleks backyard with Rick Pi :arski umpiring and Fawkner would still win . Its been a long sad season at Cordner Oval and I'll bet these last weeks have been purgatory for the Navy Blue diehards . Despite two successive wins by St . Bernards I've just got the feeling that Old Brighton can keep the relegation door from finally closing by surprising the Bernards at the Beach Road Oval, and Ther ry 's faint hopes of joining Fawkner in the finals will be put to rest after it's trip to Bundoora where they will find that Old Paradians will not have been carried away by last week's great win . The O.F's were never known for their generosity when it comes to four match points so to Reg Taylor, Bernie Dunn, Pat Egan and Co. I'm sorry boys but this is the end of the line for this year . I might have suggested earlier in this preview that it was just a mere formality for Parkside to win today and return to the four. On further reflection, actually a study of the ladder, nothing could be further from the truth and after listening to Club President Tom Jobaston earlier in the week I'm not at all sure that the Devils are playing with the confidence that used always bring victory at Pitcher Park . Should St . Kilda win today and C Id Xaverians and Old Paradians beat Blacks and Therry there will be four sides equal 4th on 8 wins, and surely this is just the incentive Saints coach Vince LaRagy has been looking for to convince his players that they're capable of playing in this year's finals . As the ground will have dried out Parkside is bound to be more competitive and its smaller brigade of King, Page, Wise, Griffiths, Paps and Williams will come into their own . St . Kilda will need big games from its stars and provided they play up to form then St . Kilda will win . So Messrs . Meehan, Capi ron, riddell, Latham, Gillan & Co. its up to you! As .I believe they can its the Saints for me. In C Section Kew has been given another chance of playing in the finals in drawing Banyule at Victoria Park. Banyule's form of late has been most consistent and I just can't see Kew upsetting this today. After coming close on occasions in the past month, Hampton Rovers should celebrate a home victory today against St . Kevins who will be looking just as hard for a win so as to salvage something from a cruel season, and Old Trinity will be happy to be at home to Melbourne High after an indifferent display,at Righetti Oval last week. On the wide open spaces at Bulleen the "Mitres" will be too fast and classy for the High School . Thomastown journey to Balwyn for its clash with Old Camberwell and with second position at stake is unlikely to slip up. Of the top three Ajax faces the toughest hurdle in Old Haileybu ry whose record at McKinnon is not bad . As this is the "Bloods" big chance of staying in the hunt for a final's berth they are bound to provide plentv 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
ct opposition for the "Jackers" . However, as has been said before, the Old Haileybu ry race has been run Trns year and they must now start preparing for 87 and a continuance of battles with old foes like Hampton Rovers etc. What a pity after so many years that St . Kevin's wont be there as well . And now to A Section where the beauty of the promotion and relegation system has, Ross Booth and I contend, thrust the Old Scotch and Marcellin game into the limelight . Both clubs have experienced a successful fortnight and have winning form . Scotch has a game in hand and realize that victory today would in all probability ensure safety and A Section in 1987 . On the other hand a loss by Marcellin means B Section for sure and although a win DOES NOT guarantee safety it surely places enormous pressure on Caulfield and Uni Blues who have big tasks today. Thus if we take incentive away from both sides on the grounds that each has equal amounts, we then have to look at the coaching of the sides and the calibre, both mentally and physically of the players . Marcellin's Neil Le Lievre knows Amateur Football well . He has A (De La 1983) and B(Marcellin 1985) flags under his belt and the confidence and respect of his players . Barry Price of Scotch is a new boy. He must have wondered what he'd gotten himself into during May and June . However of late his side has found form, has grown in confidence and one expects are at last playing to instructions and the Price style . Both will have prepared well for today and be emotionally involved . However when it comes to the crunch its up to the players and I'm of the opinion that Old Scotch has that two or three extra players capable of exploiting a Marcellin side which has pinned its 1986 hopes of survival on a crop of youngsters from its Under 19 side, and the pride of its Getsons, Cullinan, Amads, Walshe and Co . Matt Getson is in great touch and he should have the call over Wa rwick Matthews and the aerial duel between Tony Wa!she and Fergus Kiel could well decide the game. Gar ry Petroof will worry Andy Smith in the air but the Scotch man will win on the ground and set up much play with his attacking style . Across the centre honours should be fairly even, but Marcellin will struggle in defence where And re w Moir, Peter sherwin and Peter B rown pose the main dangers . Around the packs Rick Enior and Michael Polkinghorne will have too much experience for the fledgling Marcellin pair of Lennox and Castagna . I've not mentioned Rob Fuller, Andy McMillan or Will Allen and I doubt if Marcellin has the depth to cover these in form Scotch players and despite what is bound to be a brave effort I'm afraid its the Cardinals day today, but golly I hope I'm wrong . ! At the other end of the ladder Collegians journey to Timber Ridge to play Bulleen Templestowe who are staring down the proverbial barrell . With Tony Keenan under a cloud and recent losses to two of the relegation candidates Bulleen Templestowe is surviving just so long as Ormona keep losing . Today at home the Bullants have a golden opportunity to show all and sundry that it is a real challenge, it is a good side and that there's plenty of heart and soul in the club . If theu're unable to halt a 12 week winning run by Collegians I believe that their season may come to a shattering end as they've still to play De La at the Park and North at home . You must ask are Collegians due for a loss? I thought it might have come last week and at quarter time the "Fields" were looking good, but had no answer to an awe-inspiring second term which saw the Lions kick 9 .8 to a point and without prime-movers Ian Herman and G reg Tregear! This will be a tremendous game and as winning form's good form I just can't go past Collegians . De La Salle thoroughly enjoyed the day at Albert Park last week and today moves next door to tackle Caulfield . With second sopt at stake and two tough games to come De La are the logical winners . One word of caution - if the Fields get the jump and their tails up you could be in for a woeful day. Ivanhoe and North meet at Elsternwick Park and North will have vivid memories of their last encounter which incidently was Ivahoe's last win . The sides have drifted apart since then both on the ladder and on form and I have no hesitation in selecting North . Ormond has been provided with yet another chance of redeeming itself and returning to the four today . They meet the Blues who have been all around a win and whose lack of success has put its 1987 position in jeopardy. The game thus takes on very real significance for both camps and I must admit that on paper and on form at present I'm very tempted to go for the visitors . My reason for sticking with Ormond is club pride and the players fear of defeat and the shame the side would experience in front of its partisan crowd should it fail to at least challege the Collegians, De La's and Norths for its hard and well earned 1985 title . 100 GAMES TO OLD PARADIAN SENIOR CAPTAI N The Committee, coaches, players and supporters of Old Paradians, extend hearty congratulations to senior Captain Steve Exton, on playing his 100 game for the Club on Saturday 26th July, 1986, against University Blacks . Steve has been the senior Captain since last season,, and injuries during 1985 & 1986 seasons prevented him fro playing his 100th game much earlier. We wish Steve the very best of luck, in his efforts to lead the team into 'A' Section in 1987 . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986
UNI BLACK S Brian " Sam" Gannon will celebrate his 50th game for Uni Blacks this week against St. Kilda . Sam began his career with Blacks back in 1982, however his attendance has been somewhat irregular, he did not play at all in 1983 and unfortunately missed out on the reserves 1984 premiership . Sam is a valued member of the University Blacks Football Club and everyone wishes him well for his 50th game . Well done Sam! 5
Two of the section's disappointing sides Latrobe University and A.N .Z . Bank meet at Bundoora . The students fl,rll take the points because the Bankers do not have the forward strength to convert scoring opportunities . Doveton seeking a final's berth will record a big victory over the disappointing Footscray Institute . Whitefriars will appreciate the surface of the harry Trott Oval which could be a final's venue . Home side Commonwealth Bank v,ill lack the strength to match the Whitefriars' star players . Lately inconsistent University High School Old Boys will join the winning list again when they defeat St . Leonards who languish on the bottom rung of the ladder. Leaders Old Essendon should prove too strong for St . And rews who will contest the game until the final siren in their quest for a final's berth .
Norm Nugent Reviews and Previews D, E, F, G and U 19 Matches
REVIEW OF AUGUST 2 GAME S d) Old Mentonians proved too strong for West Brunswick who wilted despite my tip that they would win . Coburg lost all chance of a final's berth when they were no match for Balaclava on the neutral soil at Albert Park . Leaders Monash Blues had over ten goals to spare over Powerhouse who must lift their game to avoid relegation . Old Ivanhoe lost to Heatherton despite their home ground advantage . Preston had a six goal victory against Nort h Brunswick on their V.F.A . counterparts' ground . My tipping successes in D section totalled three . e) Old Geelong found sufficient form to defeat Brunswick by three points and by so doing could have averted relegation . Leaders Bulleen United inflicted a heavy loss on Clayton who now face a struggle to avoid relegation . True to my prediction, Elsternwick were too strong for Peninsual was surprised by the eleven goal margin however! St . Bede's kept their dim final's hopes alive by accounting. Ifor Williamstown whose supporters do not hold my tipping in high esteem . State Bank had a big victory over lowly University Reds and by so doing have consolidated second place . My tipping in E totalled four. Doveton continued to bukld percentage when the overshelmed A .N .Z. Bank at Albert Park. Commonweatih ank proved far too strong for Footscray Institute of Technology who slipped to eighth as a result of Latrob e University's easy victory over St. Leonards. St . And rews defied Peter French's forecasts when they comfortably downed University High and thus maintained their game lead over poveton . What an even contest Whiefriars and Old Essendon provided! At the final siren the leaders Essendon were ahead by the narrowest margin . My tipping in F totalled four . g) Old Carey, thanks to above average accuracy, defeated Monash Whites and so returned to the top of the ladder. Unfortunately the playing ranks at Parkside and Williamstown have thinned so much that these strongly based clubs were forced to forfeit to Eltham and G .T.V.9 respectively . Junior 1 : De La Salle with a resounding win over Banyule markedly improved their percentage Ormond showed their power and right to lead the competition by their easy win over Melbourne High School Old .Boys . Neighbours Bulleen Templestowe and Marcellin played an interesting game from which the district side emerged victorious. Lowly Old Scotch moved away the dreaded relegation zone by defeating University Blues while Old Xaverians had a comfortable victory over North Old Boys who dropped to ninth after Round 15 . Junior 2 : Thomastown inaccuracy helped St . Bernards to a convincing victory after a fairly even game . Collegians vindicated my selection when they defeated Old Haileybu ry by two goals in what could prove to have been the Grand Final rehearsal . Old Melburnians victory over Therry have cemented the dark 'Blues' place in the finals . Unfortunately the University Blacks had to forfeit their could game to Old Brighton Grammarian s. Junior 3 : Ivanhoe returned to the winning list with a resounding victory over Blues made it two wins in a row when they accounted for Old CamberwellCaulfield Grammarians . Monarn . St. Kilda had another close encounter and yet again they emerged victorious - this time by two points against Hampton Rovers . Williamstown took the game right up to Old Paradians who finally emerged victors by thirteen points. PREVIEW OF AUGUST 9 GAME S d) Monash Blues at home will await West Brunswick with confidence is no way I can select the Magpies . Balaclava travel to Old Mentonians . On the season's performances there for what could prove a danger game. During 1986 the Balaclava forwards have been the more active and although forwards win matches, my hunch leads me to tip Old Mentonians to win . Neighbours Coburg and Preston meet on the DeChene Oval which has proven hazardous for countless visiting teams over many years . Preston are strong enough to win today as Coburg's final's run has ended . Heatherton should have little difficulty in defeating Powerhouse who have experienced sparse success this season . No rth Brunswick will seize today's opportunity to avoid relegation by defeating Old Ivanhoe at the Allard Reserve . e) Brunswick make the long journey to Peninsula who will be all out to avenge last week's loss . At Mt . Eliza the Pirates will take the points . Bulleen United will keep its unbeaten record in tact by accounting for the inconsistent Old Geelong on the spacious Como Park . Clayton will prove too strong for University Reds who seem relegation certainties . Inconsistent Williamstown await Elsternwick who if they keep could obtain the double chance . Elsternwick is my selection . State Bank at home will take the pointswinning over St . Bedes. 6
THE
AMATEUR
FOOTBALLER,
1986
Whites should prove too fast for G.T.V.9, while Parkside should take the points against Eltham T) Monash Gollege . At Bulleen Old Carey should retain section leadership by accounting for Williamstown . Junior 1 : Melbourne High must defeat Banyule to keep their place in the ever-changing top four . Banyule's form gives no indication they can defeat M .H .S .O.B . De La Salle with final's ambitions will prove too strong for University Blues. Marcellin will take the points against Old Scotch to maintain their threat to the leading sides . North Old Boys will not be strong enough to hald Ormond's string of victories . The closest match could be that at Bulleen Templestowe where Old Xaverians are the visitors . Although the Red and Blacks are capable of playing good football they are not accustomed to pressure football and for this reason I select Bulleen Templestowe. Junior 2 : St. Bernards should be able to take the points over Therry as should Old Melburnians against Thomastown . Old Haileybu ry will defeat Old Brighton and leaders Collegians will have a big victory over the dispirited University Blacks. Junior 3 : St. Kilda will be too talented for Caulfield Grammarians . At Bundoora the Old Paradians should be able to defeat Old Camberwell . Ivanhoe travel to Monash Blues hoping for a second consecutive victory whick should be obtainable . Hampton Rovers and Williamstown should stage an interesting game in which skill and courage will be exhibited . I favour the Rovers because I doubt the Williamstown players can give total concentration to their game plan .
Personality Pars 250 AT THOMASTOWN . Congratulations from all at Thomastown ar e extended to Russell "Tiger" Kelly on his 250th game against Kew . Russell has been a very reliable player right through the Junior and Senior ranks for the past 16 years . When the challenge is there, Russell can be relied upon to do the hard workand play consistently on much taller opponents at centre half back orfull back . A feature of his play is his determination to do well in a crisis situation . The highlight of his career so far has been winning the best and fairest award as well as being captain in 1985 . He also like a "go" at centre half forward or on the "ball" to keep up his fitness . All at Thomastown appreciate his great efforts for the club and hope he will continue for a few more years .
CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS Congratulations to Doug Allen who plays his 50th game for Caulfield Grammarians in today's matc h against BulleenTemplestowe . On joining the Club from school in 1984 Doug immediately established himself as a senior player, and over the last 3 years has earnt himself a reputation as being a reliable and determined half-back flanker who takes great delight in kicking the occasional goal . Doug also deserves credit for the work he put in over 2 seasons which saw the successful re-introduction of a junior side to the Club this yeac All at Caulfield wish Doug all the best for today's game and look forward to him being one of the strength's of the Club for many years to come . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986
SUPERBOOT'S 5 0 Another milestone has been reached by the very attractive and spunky Phil Ulbrick . Phil is a 'magnificent kick of the football and earlier this year showed how far he can kick when he goaled from the wing . Phil won our best and fairest in 1984 and was runner up in 1985 our Premiership year. He isan extremely versatile playerand has played in nearly every key position since joining our club 3 years ago . he has no excuse for missing training now that he lives in a caravan at the club, but he still seems to miss a few nights anyway . Phil is one of those people who excells at all sports and is a very fair players in all of them . A trap of living so close to the club is the magnet of the bar . Well done "Superboot" and we hope to have you around the club for many years . 50 AT DOVETO N Also on fifty games at Doveton is our own "Dr. Death" Trainer Paul Donald, whose favourite cure seems to be salting the wound . Since he came down last season he has done the medical chore in such a dedicated manner that his enterprise would be welcome at any club in nearly any competition in both games on the day. Congratulations from all the players whose bruised ankles and pride (or whatever) have been helped by your efforts. Congratulations from all at Doveton SJOC to Reseve Player Vito D'Aquino on playing 50 games for the Club . Vito is an honest and dedicated player whose efforts have often lifted the Reserve team and he has held his place in a successful side quite well . 7
'OTF' was priviliged to be in attendance of the Uni "Pav" last Friday when the M UFC honored one of its favourite sons Ern Cropley . "Croppo" was awarded by having the MUFC U .19 Honour Board named after him for to quote Mark Marsden he has been "Father mentor and advisor" to a great number of U .19 lads . On a night which was well attended we spotted 5 Cordners - Dr . Don and Dr . Ted, Dennis Big Ed and Ian, 2 ex Hawks Morton Browne and Ray Wilson, North's new General Manager John. Adams, Werribee's President Dr . Michael Turner, plus a galaxy of personalities and stars including TrevorSteer, Standish Juniorand Senior Barry Church whodid his stint behind the jump, PeterSelleck down from Sydney, plus of course the dependables, Marsden, Munro and Saunders . 'OTF's' comments on Noel Rundle's side "How could you leave Gary Dempsey and Neil Roberts out of yourside and whatabout David Parkin, TonyAndePson or Doc Roet instead of Mark Browning?" Still we congratulate Noel on his selection which has caused widespread commentand discussion . we also wonder whether Dr . Don Cordner, another Brownlow Medalist to miss, will cancel Noel's M .C .C. membership ?

Personafity Pars 100 UP FOR MONASH "LEGEND " Last week at Powerhouse the 100 was finally notched up by B ryan "Fingerdick the Garden Gnome" McCormick . "Bud" has been at the club for eight years beginning with the Under 19's but a string of nagging injuries has made the ton a long time coming . He has always been a great example to the younger blokes and has earned his "legend" tag through his dedication to the club . Bud has served the club in a number of capacities including Secretary and Treasurer and has always been the first to'put in' when things needed to be done, generally being a tremendous clubman . He also led a Monash IN team to Canberra . Bud's red, curly locks in the past have made him a favourite with the ump's (as well as his "barrell chest" - now sunken) and his wit has made him a favourite at the club . Bud is currently based in Ballarat but returns each Saturday to play . The club wouldn't seem quite the same without Fingerdick reeling around the packs backwards to get onto the right foot or roving for crumbs on the forward line, and everyone at Monash hopes this will not be Bryan's last season with the Blues, so let's hope the clubs current success can match the lure of Ballarat's nocturnal activities, and keep him at Monash .
SAD DAY AT OLD ESSENDO N It was a sad day for Phil Jarratt and Old Essendon Grammar when Phil played his 49th and also his last game for the Dons . In his brief stay with us he has been a giant on and off the field making a friend of every one in the club . All the best in your new posting Mate!!!

100th GAME AT UNI BLACK S Peter Huntington will celebrate his 100th game for Uni Blacks this week at the University Oval . Hunto began in 1980 when he saw the light and swaped from the round ball game to Aussie Rules, where he commenced at full back for the Blacks . In 1983 he was converted to full forward and kicked eight goals in a match . He captained the side in 1984 into the elimination final, however we missed out on the rest of the final seriesbyseveral points . Hunto'scareer has been studded by many ankle injuries, however his faithful friend "Smirnoff" has always helped him back onto his feet . Everyone at Blacks wishes Hunto all the best for his 100th game . DR .DEATH weLining up for his 50th gange on the basis of two a ek, a couple of weeks ago for Doveton SJOC is the man known as "Dr. Death" Paul Donald - the clubs trainer and medical and maniac expert . The Doctor goes about the job in a thorough and comprehensive manner and has the medical facilities and standard of care and treatment for players at a level such as has previously not been know around the club. Congratulations to the Doctor from all who have been in his care (??????????) . Yet another fifty club member at Doveton SJOC this time handy flank player Shane Westerman . "Westy" has worn his number well over the last three seasons. Despite having more promotion to and relegation from the reserve team than a yo yo his running game has been a useful asset to our club whichever team Westy lines up with . Well done Westy! !

Personaft Pars 50 GAMES AT ROVERLAND Congratulations to Gavin Hoggett on playin g his 50th game for the Hampton Rovers today . Gavin is yet another talented player to come through our junior ranks where he commenced playing in 1981 in the Under 17's . The following year Gavin was rewarded for his dedication to his team by winning the Coach's trophy and in 1983 was runner up in the Under 17's best and fairest two years in a row even after he played only eight games in the Under 19's in 1985 . Gavin's solid and disciplined football is an objective lesson to his teammates and all at Roverland look forward to his next 50 for the club . Honors at Thomastow n Congratulations are extended to Brett "Jerka " Jenkins on playing his 100th game for Thomastown against Kew today. 'Jerka' has played most of his football in the Reserve XVIII where he is now DVC . He has won 2 club best & fairest awards at the club and is always in the best each week . He is a great contributor and a very popular personality at Thomastown . All the best for the future from all your friends at Thomastown . 32
50 Games At Roverland All at Hampton congratulate Darren McConville on achieving his 50 game milestone last week against Thomastown . Macca commenced playing in our Under 17's in 1980 and has improved immensly during the last six years. He won the Most Improved award in the Under 17's in 1980 and in 1981 was runner up in the best and fairest the following year. In 1984 Macca won the Under 19's best team player and the last two years has been a regular team member in the seniors . Well done Macca, the club certainly looks forward to your next 50. IAN BOOTH BRINGS UP THE TON . All at Fawkner would like to congratulate Boothy on his 100th game against St . Bernards on Saturday. Ian came up through the Under 19's to play both senior and reserve football . A tenacious little rover who gives his all each week. Although small in stature he never shirks an issue and shows some of the bigger blokes how to go about it. He rarely misses a training night and has been rewarded by reaching the century Well done Boothy. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
200 TO SCHMIDT Y Today Neville Schmidt becomes the eighth Old Haileybury player to reach the 200 game milestone . This represents one of many highlights in a career that stretches back to 1974 and has seen the thickly-maned "ox" captain the club, win its senior best and fairest, represent the State and lead his team's goalkicking on two occasions . "Schmidty" has been versatile as well as enduring . This year he has taken on the role of heavy-duty ruck-rover after proving to be one of the club's more reliable full-backs in earlier years . The early eighties saw that sturdy frame in the number three jumper kick many a goal from the key forward positions, including seven goal "bags" on as many as seven occasions . Interestingly enough his predeccessor in the jumper, Don Lord, also made it to the 200 mark . Two of Neville's greatest performances were the 11 goal effort against Alphington (followed by a broken jaw the next week) and 8 goals in a half at St . Kilda CBC through a fabulour display of marking and kicking . Of finerfigure than in hisearlydays, Schmidty in that old St . Kilda jumper is one of the clubs harder trainers even at this advanced stage in his career - he certainly retains more enthusiasm for the track than his old stablemate "Corners" . He has also retained his great strength, firm hands and long kicking of early days despite the challenges from the young Turks such as Shand, Baxter, Gregson & Co . That versati lity has also allowed coaches to play him at the same end of the ground all day on windy afternoons . Schmidty's penchant for a bargain is well known and continues to exhibit itself in the strangest ways . Having brough a new jumper this year, the clubs administration reckons he'll be around for a while yet, invigorated since his return from a UK summer holiday with the lovely Kaye . Well done "Schmidty" - see you at 25011 100 GAMES AT OLD BRIGHTO N David Cochran plays his 100th game for Old Brighton today. A skilful, fleet-footed player, Davis is exciting to watch, He has played most of his football on the wing and half forward flank but has now taken over the full forward spot for the senior side. Cockie really enjoys his football and we are all looking forward to his next hundred . Congratulations David, kick a bag full today! 100 AT THOMASTOW N After a brilliant career with Old Paradians, Sam Assett a returned to Thomastown, his old Junior club, to help by coaching and playing with the team in E Grade. He has blended well into the team being able to play in almost any position and having the ability to lift others in a crisis. His best coaching effort was in 1$983 when the senior team was Premiers and Champions. This year he is assisting new coach Harry Harisiou very well and helping to keep the team well up the ladder. We all congratulate you Sam on your efforts and hope your career may continue to flourish for a few more seasons.
COLLEGIAN SUPERULES REPORT Due to adverse conditions of the Eastern District Ground at Warrandyte the game was changed to State Bank's Ground Oval 4 Albert Park . In a creditable performance Collegians with only 16 players fought the game right to the end, but Eastern Districts had too many and were too big and ran out easy winners , Final Scores: Eastern Districts 13.15 .93 Collegians 3.8 .32 Goals : MacKenzie, Grant, Osbourne Best Players: Grant, Roach, Richards, Bedford, Smith and the other Elven . The next two games are at home against : Sunbury . . . August 10, and Beaconsfield . . . August 24 .
50 GAMES AT OLD HAILEYBUR Y Old Haileybury's sturdy Dave Allison has passed the 50 game mark at last! The Bloods' very own Barney Rubble has settled back into the firsts as the rovers' "Minder" this year and is doing so in great style. A nuggetty left footer with unshaven complexion (matched only by "Bonna" on a Saturday morning), "Snooze" is well . known for his attacking, vigorous play and determination in attacking the ball . His promotion this year has proved at least one selector wrong for sure! Davo has also been one of our great clubmen since joining us in 1982 . The following year he took out the reserves best and fairest. This year he has also relished his change of guernsey to discard the famous old number sixty for ever . When's he going to get rid of that blue "colour-co-ordinated" knee bandage? Well done Davo, from all at the Bloods. COMM . BANK F.C. PAST PLAYERS REUNION The Commonwealth Bank F .C. today holds its Past Players Reunion at the Harry Trott Oval . The day will be a significant one as the club will honour one of Amateur Football's former greats and club champion the lat Cyril Empey . A trophy will be awarded to the best player in the senior match to be known as "The Cyril Empey Memorial Trophy" and will be presented by Mrs Marion Empey . Today will be the inaugural presentation and the trophy is be awaded annually on the past players reunion day. BANKER REACHES 5 0 All at State Bank wish to congratulate Johnny Beare on playing his 50th game against St . Bede's today. Johnny played his first game for the club just over two years ago and even though he has reached a milestone he is still developing his football skills . This year Johnny has played his part in the club's success and his long left foot kicks have been a great acquisition on the wing . Once again congratulations John and all at the Bank hope the next fifty are just as good as the first .
Don "Wizzer" Brown of Balwyn played brilliantly at full forward and broke the club goal-kicking
record with 10 majors (who can remember "Wizzer" the fictional star of the "Argus" footy comic?) .

Graham Barnard, Lindsay Shannon and [an Bishop were starring . University Blacks trounced Ormond 102 points to 56, and made up for the previous four defeats . Vic West gave a polished display of drop kicking for goal and intelligent play in the centre, while David Quinn defended well at full back and John Smith and Bob Leggatt picked up most of the crumbs . Ormond's scribe would not find a best player "my reverie was broken only by the lugubrious boom of the Ormond clock" THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986
50 GAMES UP AT BRUNSWIC K This week we see two mo re Brunswick players reach their 50 game tally with the club, namely Danny Demi re & Steve McBride . Danny as or Captain and Coach over the past three seasons gives his all in every encounter and seems to pull out that little bit extra on the big occasions. Although he reckons he is nearing the end of his playing days, his form to date suggests otherwise. As Coach he led us to our first flag for 11 years last year and has been a more than welcome player and official at Brunswick. Steve is following his equal best & fairest winning form this year and has turned in some might performances . His quiet and unassuming manner off the gound belies his determination and deducation on it. A fine mark and kick as well as a vital key position player are attributes he brings to Brunswick and we trust Steve, as well as Danny will be around the Club for many years to come. ANOTHER 50 AT ELSTERNWICK Congratulations from alll at Eisternwick to John Silovic on playing his 50th game. After three years and 48 games of solid, defending in the Firsts and Reseves, work pressures caused `Sila' to retire at the start of this season . However a vist to the Club for a Thursday night drink changed all that . A few hints, two games in the reserves and there'~ his 50 games! We congratulate John Silovic and hope that he will continue with Elsternwick for at least another 50 games .
ST. LEONARDS : REPCO BES T Round 13 v Comm . Bank . Reserves : Richard B rewer, Seniors : Andrew Levy. Many thanks goes to Dar re ll Hen ry who allowed the Club to use his 21st celebrations as a do for the clubs first win last week. They tell me he caught only a few hours sleep, but still fronted on Sunday night with half a dozen . A great clubman, well done . NO ALJ BUT . . . . . Much to the dismay of all at Old Haileybury, the General Manager of the VAFA, the rest of 'C' Section and (more than anyone) the man himself, Andy Langford-Jones' absence last Saturday did not result in an Old Haileybury loss, Are the days of No ALJ, no Haileybu ry " over? We await confirmation of the unbelievable. Has his influence waned since his journey to Adelaide? We shall see . ANOTHER 50 UP AT O .M .F.C. It seems the abundant youth at Old Mentonians is now coming of age as another young star reaches his 50th game . Simon Patch, who usually writes this column, but has been prevented by modesty, takes the field for the 50th time against West Brunswick today . Simon, although light of frame, is a dashing wingman and is instrumental in turning defence into attack with his regular high pitced cries for the ball . Simon was a major contributor to the Reserves Premiership last season, and is on course to make ita double . Apart form his on field performances, Simon is also the clubs Communications officer, and is responsible for printing our monthly newsletter . His company, Avenue Press, is also a sponsor of the club . Keep up the good work mate .
All Eisternwick players and supporters congratulate Mick Lloyd on playing his 50th game . Due to work and overseas travel this milestone has taken quite a while to achieve. Whether Mick plays on the backline or forwardline, strong marking and long (?) kicking are features of his game . This season Mick has taken a more positive attitude to his football and he has been a colid contributor in the Reserves and Seniors. A gentleman and a clubman we hope to see Mick Lloyd at Elsternwick for many years to come. 50 GAMES AT KEW Robe rt P re sutti plays his 50th game for Kew today against Old Haileybury . Rob played with the U19's in 1982-3 and moved onto the Reserves in 1984 . After missing the 1985 season Rob returned this year and gained himself a spot on the backline in the Seniors. Well done Rob and good luckk for the next 50.
50 GAMES AT ST . KILDA C .B.O.C. All St . Kilda C .B .O .C. players and supporters congratulate Matt "Moose" Latham on playing his 50th (consecutive) game for the club today. After a stint with St . Kilda VFL . Matt joined C.B .O.C. in 1984 and has played the majority of his games at centre halfback, where he has distinguiished himself with his fine marking, dashing runs and long kicking . Matt also represented Victoria in 1984. Well done "Moose" we all look forward to many more fine games from you in the future .
POWER HOUSE "50 " It has taken a long time, but club vice-president and Life Member, Stephen Mason finally played this 50th reserves match against Old Mentonians last Saturday. In addition to this Steve'The Fly', has played well in excess of 150 club XVIII games . A dashing wingman he is also a fine administrator, having been club treasurer, secretary and president in 1982/83 and president of the club XVIII competition .
CENTURY TO DARRYL CROPLE Y All the members at Fawkner would like to congratulate "C roppers" on his 100th game against St . Bernards on Saturday . Darryl is a product of the U19's and has progressed through to the seniors . Formerly a backman he is now relishing the opportunity to play on the ball and if that hamstring (the one that plays up on cold nights) continues to hold up Darryl could go on to play another 100 games . Congratulations "Cro pper".

150th AT OLD HAILEYBUR Y Today sees "The Little Champ" of Old Halleybury, Roger Gerny, play his 150th game for the club . The pint-sized left-footer, who has in recent weeks been nursing a bruised forehead courtesy of his coach's wall, joined the Bloods back in the heady days of 1978 when he won the competition (junior) bestand fairestasa long-haired wingman in a premiership team . The next year he discarded the headband and won the senior best and fairest in his first year - he was to repeat the dose in 1984, the year before be became captain . This year he serves as playing coach Wayne Shand's deputy and specialist coin-tosser. "Gerns" is well know as a springheeled and spectacular mark worthy of a former APS high jump champion who was able to propel his 57" frame over the 6'6" mark with no training! (No wonder the Grasshopper was called the Roger Gerny cocktail - another disastrous performance) . Roger has taken a couple of the greatest marks ever seen at the club, although these days he's a little more earthbound as he becomes more nuggetty every year . One of Gerns' other characteristics is his immaculate gear on the field, he has been know to change all but his boots at half time on muddy days . He also maintains his reputation as one of the club's snappy dressers off the field now that he has disposed of that wide Mafioso white tie . Through all the years Roger has been an ornament to the club ; his enthusiasm and dedication is equal to anyone who has pulled on the magenta and black . Well done Gerns - let's keep it going .
50th GAME AT UNI BLACK S Paul "The Champion" Conway from Uni Blacks played his 50th game against Parade last Saturday . Positioned at centre half back or back pocket on the field he usually displays his outstanding football skills which has earned him the name "TheChampion"atthe club . He playedhis 50th game strongly and with determination . The Champion started his career at Blacks in 1983 with the Juniors and 1984/5/6 with the seniors . Congratulations on your50th game Paul, everyone at Uni Blacks wishes you well !
