Foster's LagerA symbol of Australia for almost a century. Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war. Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S.A . Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Well, I almost did it! That is, tip the card . I knew that tipping the University Blacks awayatTherry after a good win against Old Xaverians the week before was a little risky. Bernie Dunn would get Therry going I knew . The overnight rain wassomething I hadn't bargained for however . Perhaps I can finish off with a clean sweep in this topsy-turvy season ! Scotch made certain of their place in A Section in 1987 with a 23 point win over Ormond at Yarra Park. Ormond's fate remains unclear . They face a desperate Marcellin at Ormond today with BulleenTemplestowe pressing for their place in the four. Scotch's Warwick Matthews was injured but Peter Ford filled the rucking role most ably for Scotch and gave strong support to rover Ric Senior . University Blues finally got the win the required to secure their A Section berth for 1987 . It came at the expense of Ivanhoe who have had a disastrous season after a promising start . The 'Hoes lost by 26 points mainly because they were unable to score a single goal atthe Trinity College end . Ivanhoe led at quarter time but Blues wrested the lead with an 8 goal second quarter . Mike Yandall was back to some good form and rover Geoff Allen was one to benefit. Marcellin gave Collegians a fight going down by just 14 points at Bulleen after leading by 7 points at the last break . Collegians were just that little bit steadier in the crisis . They have now won 14 games on the trot! Perhaps the game might provide some ammunition for coach Bruce Ferguson . But let us not take anything from Marcel!in . Their last month of footba!l has been excellent and they m ust stand a very good chance of knocking off Ormond this afternoon . Ruck-rover David Hoyle continues his creative play . De La Salle led all day against the hapless Bulleen-Templestowe to win by 25 points . De La forward Peter Rennie has been amongst the goals in the past few weeks and got 6 against the Bullants . He is obviously enjoying spending some of the time closer to the big sticks . It is hard to see BulleenTemplestowe being good enough to overcome North Old Boys in order to make the four. But the incentive is there knowing Marcellin's good recent form and Ormond's indifferent performances . North Old Boys comfortably accounted for Caulfield Grammarians by 51 points at Brens Oval . Paul Considine and Jerome Griffin were fine defenders for the Purples . Caulfield sti!l find themselves in the hot seat despite a very good last half of the season . They need to beat Blues to be certain of avoiding relegation . I think they can . The winners will be : Bulleen-Templestowe v NORTH OLD BOYS UNIVERSITY BLACKS v Fawkner CAULFIELD GRAMMAR v University Blues OLD PARADIANS v St . Bernard's Ivanhoe v OLD SCOTCH Old Melburnians v PARKSIDE Ormond v MARCELLIN Old Brighton v ST. KILDA COLLEGIANS v De La Salle Old Xaverians v THERR Y And a word or two about B Section this week . Commiserations to Old Brighton and Old Melburnians! Old Paradians look betterand better, especially with Old Xaverians having the wobbles. No doubt the match of the day will be at the University to decide fourth spot . I think I should tip against the Blacks this week but given fine weather their big man strength will be too much . Speak to you tonight on 3L0 at 6 .40 p .m . and tomorrow listen to the VAFA Footy Show between 10 a .m . and 10 .30 a .m . on 89.5 FM Southern Community Broadcasters . We'!l have a wrap up of the final fours, relegated teams and prospects for the finals . Guests will be Peter French, Archie Salek and Geoff Sincock .

ORMOND OR BULLEEN-TEMPLESTOWE, CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS OR MARCELLIN ? It's hard to believe from this end that today marks the end of the season for 60 percent of the clubs . What dreams have been shattered, what hopes realizes? What prizes are yet to be won ? Certainly the clubs above will have spent an Marcellin's recent form has been most conanxious week, hoping that key players under an sistent. They have won three and pushed Collinjury cloud are right for this vital last game . In egians to 14 points, its lowest winning margin the interest of a great round let's hope that since May 10th, in the past month .',NhilstOrmond weather conditions do not effect results and can claim just one success in the same period . may the better sides win . One of the beauties of Amateur football is that Bulleen-Templestowe's last win came on July clubs have long memories, and I'm sure many at 19th when they defeated Ivanhoe at home but Marcellin recall a similar game against Ormond since then they have suffered defeats to Caulfield back in 1978, a game which also decided the Grammarians, Marcellin, Collegians and De La Eagles A Section fate at that time . Marcellin Salle . North in the same period have beaten Uni would dearly love those 4 points today and Blues, Ormond, Ivanhoe and Caulfield Grammarremain" in the big time"foranotheryear . However ians but lowered its colours to Old Scotch . such isthe uncertaintyofth isseasonthat Marcel !in could win, and yet still see itself in B Section Today atTimber Ridge North must win if it is to and, to rub salt into the wound, leave Ormond retain the all important double chance, although clinging to fourth spot! This game will not be with De La to play Collegians we could have a won by "remember last time" or "let's keep 'em scenario wherby apart from the Lions the other out of the four", etc ., it wi II be won by the age old sides in the fourare all beaten . HoweverasAlan remedy of being first at the ball, running in McGilvray might say "I'll come back to that" . numbers and playing with confidence, discipline When they last met Bulleen-Temp won well at and to instructions . Both coaches are astute and B rensandexposedanumberofNorthweaknesses . have great respectfor one another but today I'm Still that was way back in June (21st) and North going for Marcellin . I believe their enthusiasm, (what's this 'The Purples', Ross?) or "the semicorrect blend of youth and experience, pace rampant Griffins", to be exact, have improved and recent form will give them the edge at the significantly since then . Both sides will rely on right stages of what is bound to be a thriller . their runners - rovers and ruck rovers - Hanlon, Morse, Cahill for North and Branagan, De Marte At Harry Trott Collegians should put the icing and Asdagi for the Bullants . I'd also playJerome on the cake of a splendid first round . They will Griffin on the dangerous Pal ;mer and Paul be happy to see De La placed in the position of Considine on Tony Keenan . The Bullants big playing next week in the sudden death of a first problem could be North's ruckman-forward Peter semi and on the excellent surface of the Trott Wright whose marking ability poses a big worry have ample players, all in good form, to exploita for Laurie Aghan, who will need big games from De La side that may lack the legs and youth of its his skipper Shane Gilmore, classy utilityAndrew opponents. Amythe and the unpredictable Greg Kazuro . At Elsternwick Park Caulfield Grammar play Despite the build up from both coaches I think Uni Blues with the knowledge that victory will North will win as the combine's enthusiasm see them remain in A Section for another season . seems to have disappeared and should news It's a great position in which to be . They need come from Malare St . that the home side is in not rely on Ormond or anyone else except for command against Marcellin then the lowered their "Dark Blue twenty" . But will the Uni Blues Bulleen bundle could drop completely! Quite a be merecannonfodder? Will Robert Lamb abhors challenge there today Laurie ! defeat allow his side to merely go through the Normally when the top side meets the third it paces? Can anyone imagine the likes of Tyquin, could rightly be regarded as the match of the Curnow, Mclnnes, MacAulay, etc . lying down . day . Howeverwith the th reatof relegation hanging Well I can't! The Blues are a proud outfitand will over Marcellin and Ormond knowing thatanother be just as anxious for victory as one imagines loss and a win to Bulleen-Temp would see them every one of the 64 clubs in the V .A.F .A . will be in mothballs for 1986 sees this clash as the big today, and after a solid performance at home one today. last week they are bound to put up a very worthTHE AMATEUR FOOTBR.LCER - 1986

, .)hi!e opposition . However as Caulfield have so much more toga in I must select them to emerge victorious . In the remaining game I'm going for Ivanhoe to surprise Old Scotch atthe Boulevard . Scotch are safe thanks to a great win last week and a very handy percentage and they may not care or relish a final Ivanhoe performance in A Section until 1988 at the earliest . Ivanhoe has performed well in the past fortnight . They pushed both Nort h and the Blues and would only have needed the return of some of its smaller brigade a few weeks earlier to have given the section even greater uncertainty . I don't write Scotch off completely but really their performances have been so eratic you wouldn't be sure of picking them against say O.M .'s! ! * What a game awaits us at the Beaurepaire oval where the Blacks are at home to Fawkner . A great Australian scene . The finals for the victor - mothballs for the loser! Blacks have been up and down . They lost to St . Kilda, came out and trounced Old Xaverians and then followed up by losing toTherry . They're a bit like Fitzroy. They've been given the chance to sea! a finals berth but have not been capable . Correction - they've been capable but not committed . Fawkner, on 'theotherhand, worriedthe!ifeoutofO!d Paradians last week and can be considered unlucky to have lost as both Hills and Young missed shots in the dying stages . There are not too many things these days you can bet on with anycertainty but one is that O .P.'s, Old Xavs and Parkside would rather see the Blacks finish fourth than Fawkner, OR would they? I'm going for Fawkner despite their previous away effort and despite the fact they'II be relying heavily on Harry Busst to produce yet another lion hearted effort against the Blacks tall timber. The odds will be stacked against them but I've a hunch Fawkner's determination to prove they're a final four side may just get them home . Old Xaverians who, by the way and contraryto rumours, are still playing in the black and red and not black and white are staring in the face of yet another loss ; their fourth on end and hardly the form to be approaching the final series .
Therry will be stiff opposition and Bernie Dunn can be well satisfied with the club's first season in B Section . I just can't believe that Xavs are on the skids . Initially it could be put down to sheer over confidence and just one of those days. Now I'm not sure . They certainly lack rovers and have also lost the flowing game they played so well earlier in the year . At home today I believe their successive losses will have jolted them back to reality and they'll bounce back for a much needed win and confidence booster on the eve of a very important final series . In other games St. Kilda CBC should end the season with an away win at South Rd . against Old Brighton and Parkside will surely have learnt from Fawkner and will take O.M .'s seriously . The 0 . M .'s will be deadly serious after an inglorious display at St . Bernard's last week and will want to bow out of B Section with the Parkside scalp! Finally old rivals St . Bernard's and Old Paradians meetat Bundoora where O .P.'swill be untroubled winning . * Unfortunately the C Section fight for the four has fizzled out, due to Kew's surprising loss to St . Kevin's. Congratulations to Banyule, commiserationstoOldHaileybury .Thebig interest is whetherA.J .A.X . can regain the double chance by beating Thomastown at Thomastown and whether Hampton Rovers can beat M .H .S .O .B . to ensure it remains in C Section . I don't give A .J .A .X . any show at all of beating the Bears out at Thomastown although to be fair, Bentleigh, Northcote or Elsternwick Park would be an entirely different proposition, and one which may well have to be face in the weeks ahead . Similarly St . Kevin's hopes of a late reprieve are a "pie in the sky" as not only do they have to beat Old Haileybury at McKinnon but also rely on the High Schoo l toppling the Rovers ; a series of most unlikely events, given the recent form of Melbourne High and the home ground advantage and support the Rovers are bound to receive . In other games it's Banyule over Old Camberwell and Old Trinity will not risk a slump by losing to Kew . And so to the end of another season, I trust you have all enjoyed it as much as Ross and I .

UP FOR THE WEDG E All atSt . Bede's congratulate Rodney (Wedge) Bryant on reaching his hundredth game against Elsternwick today. Wedge has played many good games for the Beda's and has developed into a reliable full back, noted for his excellent disposal and ability to read the play . Among Wedge's contributions was a stint as Reserves Captain Coach in 1984 and 85 . Wedge did a great job in this capacity which was difficult because of player shortages . Well done Wedge, and all at the club would like to see you play many more games for the Bedas. THE-AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986
AJAX PLAYER'S 50th Congratulations to Ajax player David Jagod a on his 50th game with the club last Saturday . David has played all of his games with the reserves and until this season was a fringe player . His application to training and a more mature approach to his game has made him one of Ajax's top reserve players, and the chance of a senior berth is there for the taking if David's attitude continues into the 1987 season . As part of the entertaining TV Crew, he gives all at the club greatenjoymentandadds greatlytothe "Jackers" spirit . Well done Jug! 5
Heathe rton where they are my selection to take the points . Coburg after two good wins at home journey to Monash Blues . The 'Burgers, lions at home, are not so proficient of the DeChene Oval so Monash should return to the winning list today . Two of last week's losers, Old Mentonians and Preston meet at Keysborough in a preview of next week's first semi-final . Mentonians have the better recent form and at home I select them . Old Ivanhoe are my selection to defeat Powerhouse who today bid farewell to D section .
Norm Nugent Reviews and Previews D, E, F, G and U19 Matches
E SECTION : State Bank will be too strong for inconsistent Brunswick on Oval 4 . Bulleen United have the long trip to meet Williamstown whose form hasbeen unpredictable, thus Bulleen will maintain their unbeaten record as Williamstown leave the section . Peninsula should be able to defeat Clayton at Mt. Eliza while at home on Como, Old Geelong should end the season with a victory over F bound University Reds . Should State Bank fail, and Elsternwick defeat St . Bede's, the V.A.F .A .'s second oldest club will move into second place . Surely this will be sufficient incentive for the 'Wicks to win again .
REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 16, 198 6 D SECTION : What a bad round for your tipster who managed to select only one winner . True to prediction, Heathert on had a comfortable win over West Brunswick whose 1987 fate remains in their own hands . Balaclava stamped themselves as Section favourites following their decisive victory over leaders Monash Blues, who despite equal opportunity kicked just as inaccurately as Balaclava was able to kick accurately . Old Mentonians did not enjoy their first game atCoburg where the locals added yet another top scalp to their already impressive list. No rth Brunswick easily accounted for Powerhous a and thus moved to the security of eighth . Today the Northerners must win to secure that final rating . The surprise of the round was the six point victory by the middle of the list Old Ivanhoe against Preston whose form at the business end of the season must be concerning John Meese and his brains trust . E SECTION : Four selections were proven in E section . Brunswick and Williamstown again both revealed evidence on inconsistency when Williamstown recaptured its often missing winning form . Leaders Bulleen United crushed Peninsula while at Clayton the locals had a good win over Old Geelong . Elsternwick vindicated my faith when they easily accounted for State Bank who must wish every game could be played at Albert Park. As expected St . Bede's had no trouble accounting for University Reds who didn't put much pressure on their scoreboard attendant. F SECTION : Your tipster picked four F seciton winners . University High were untroubled to defeat A.N .Z . Bank . Footscray Tech . let me down badly when latrobe University scored an easy win over them . Doveton had over ten goals to spare against Commonwealth Bank, while leaders Old Essendon were not exerted in defeating St. Leonard's by one hundred and one points. St . Andrew's fell further from the four when they were defeated byWhitefriars . (All is not yet lost for the Saints, as today's game will decide their fate) . G SECTION : Williamstown forfeited to Parkside while Monash Whites regained section leadership following their comfortable victory against Old Carey. In the other game, GTV-9 scored an impressive win over Eltham College . JUNIOR 1 : North Old Boys by virtue of a bye have not yet reconciled themselves to relegation . I predicted three game results accurately, namely Melbourne High over University Blues, Ormond over Bulleen-Templestowe (The twelve goal margin was a surprise however!!!) and De La Salle over Old Scotch . Marcellin wre able to easily defeat Old Xaverians who, although they can still make the finals, proved again they are not capable of playing the brand of football required of top Under 19 sides . JUNIOR 2 : St. Bernard's at home were untroubled to defeat Thomastown whose form never reached the level of the previous week . Neutral soil did not prevent Old Haileybury destroying the morale of the University Blacks who must be a dispirited side . Fourth placed Old Melburnians were able to contain leaders Collegians before going down by only twenty six points . I n the other game Therry defeated Old Brighton by fifty eight points . JUNIOR 3 : Pro-tem coach Gary Stokes revealed panache with mercurial moves which enabled Old Paradians to move ahead of Caulfield Grammarians after half time to register a comfortable victory. Ivanhoe had over one hundred points to spare over Williamstown . These were the only games played as Hampton Rovers and C .B .C . St . Kilda received forfeits from Monash Blues and Old Camberwell respectively. PREVIEW OF AUGUST 23 GAME S D SECTION : The North Brunswick - West Brunswick game is particularly important to both sides as the prize to the winner will be membership of D Section in 1987 . Form over the past few weeks, plus Allard Reserve advantaqe, prompts me to select North Brunswick. In form side Balaclava travel to 6

FSECTION : VVhatadaunting taskfacesA .N .Z. Banktoday! Their longjourneyto Kei!orshould result in an overwhelming vicotry by hosts Old Essendon Grammarians . Long standing rivals University High and Footscray Institute meet in Royal Park . I forecast yet another big loss for the Footscray based side . At . Bundoora, Latrobe University await Commonwealth Bank . The students did so well last week, I must select them today . Doveton and Whitefriars meet at Doveton in a preview of next week's first semifinal . At . home I fancy Doveton . Newcomers St . Andrew's and St . Leonard's meet at Pascoe Vale, where the locals will be too strong for St . Leonard's . St. Andrew's could miss the finals only by percentage, so I am sure they will be well satisfied with their V .A .F .A . debutant season . G SECTION : Old Carey should return to the winning list by defeating Eltham College while Parkside will be anxious to polish their newly found precision againstGTV-9 who will endeavour to win the game and thus take the initiative for next week's first semi-final . Nevertheless Parkside is my selection . Monash Whites have the bye as they prepare for next week's second semi-final . JUNIOR 1 : North Old Boys must defeat University Blues and hope Old Scotch loses so the N .O .B .'s can stay in the section . This incentive, plus University vacation prompts me to select North . Melbourne High with victory today over Old Scotch will gain the double final chance and it could send Old Scotch down to zone 2 come 1987 . Melbourne High is my selection . De La Salle should be strong enough to defeat Marcellin and by doing so retain its final four berth . Old Xaverians must defeat leaders Ormond and hope De La Salle loses so that the Xaverians can enter the final four . On recent form, however, Ormond will be too strong . JUNIOR 2 :Old Haileybury at home will be too strong for St . Bernard's while Thomastown will be strong enough to inflict yet another defeat on the University Blacks . Therry at home should be able to defeat Old Melburnians while leaders Collegians will continue on their winning way against Old Brighton . JUNIOR 3 : Old Paradians have the bye as Old Camberwell Grammarians have forfeited today's game . Second placed St . Kilda should end up big winners when they meet Caulfield Grammarians . Ivanhoe will prove too strong for Monash Blues even on the University Oval, while Hampton Rovers will be too strong for Williamstown in the remaining game . Today I say farewell to many readers . Thanks for reading my prose . To those who have believed my selection, I am flattered . Good luck in 1987 to all who finish today . I look forward to an interesting final's series between clubs who qualify.
Personality Pars 50 GAMES TO "PRITCH" AT OLD PARADIANS All at Old Paradians congratulate Tony Pritchard, on playing his 50th game on 16th August 1986 against Fawkner . Tony has turned out to be a most reliable full back for the club and we wish him the best of luck towards achieving his next milestone at our club . 50 GAMES TO " HEFFO" OF OLD PARADIANS All at Old Paradians congratulate Martin Heffernan, on playing his 50th game on 23rd August 1986, against St. Bernard's . Martin won the Reserves Best and Fairest Award in 1984 , which was his first year in the Club as an Under 19 player. Since then Martin has been a regular contributor on and off the field as a senior player . We wish him every success for his future at our club . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - 1986
STEVE REACHES TO N All associated with the Therry F.C . would like to congratulate Steve Gibson on reaching his 100th game . Steve commenced his career with Therry in 1981 after being amember of the successful Carlton U19 side of the late 70's. Since returning from the V .F .L ., Steve has been a fine contributor for the seniors and has played manyoutstanding games. Steve richly deserves thisachievementasan injury has prevented him from playing several matches this year. Steve, I believe can be described as a model footballer as he is determined, hardworking, loyal and above all he is supportive towards his fellow team mates . In addition to playing for Therry, Steve helps to promote the club with a weekly column in the local newspaper. Well done Steve ! 7
Personaft Pars 200 GAMES TO ZEDDERS LIVING LEGEND All at ANZ Bank today congratulate our self declared legend Harry Birkenfelds on playing his 200th game fortheclub againstOtd Essendon . Harry certainly has become a legend aroun d the place both on and off the field, and it is certainly not his fault that the club is not having siccess at the moment, in fact if he hadn't been around over the past couple of years then the club may not have survived . Harry who started with the club in 1974 has achieved many things along the way to this milestone including being Reserves Captain, a runner-up in both the seniors and reserves best and fairest, most determined player, a coaches award, and four times has been leading goalkicker in the seniors . This year the legend and his wobbly knee have propped themselved at full forward in the reserves, and somehow have putthe ball through the big sticks often enough to be the leading goalkicker in the section . Always a fierce and determined customer on the field Harry would have reached this mi!estone a!ot earlier but for his knee, and his impetuosity which has seen him incur the wrath of the tribunal on a few occasions, hence he earned the flattering nickname "Crazy Eyes" . Off the field noone has worked harder than Harry to keep the club afloat and it is a tribute to his many years work as Treasurer that the club has a sound financial base on which to build its future . His work off the field has culminated in Harry winning our prestigious Best Clubman award and perhaps even a greater highlight was being named the A .N .Z . Bank's Staff Club Sport's Personality of the Year in 1982 . Harry was also elected a Life Member of the club at the end of 1985 . This year although not acitactively involved on the committee the Legend has acted as a consultant to our new young committee, a job which we're sure he relishes . just ask him, he'll te!l you . One could go on and on writing about HB but luckily time and space does not allow it, suffice to say he has etched a permanent place for himself in the annals of A .N .Z . Bank Football Club . Good luck today mate from all connected with the club, enjoy yourself tonight, and we all hope to see you, Karen and the boys around the club for along time to come - who knows you might even make it to 250! ! 200 TO THE COUNTRY BOY ! Old Haileyburians' John Corrigan plays his longawaited two hundredth match today . "Corrers" started at the club way back in 1975, complete with long flowing locks instead of the everincreasing tonsure we are familiar with eleven years later. Corrers became a regular senior player almost immediately, giving the resting rovers a torrid time and frequently dashing
downfield from the pocket, backing his immaculate judgement. John's greatest years were the club's last two seasons at Keysborough in 1981 and 1982 . Not only was he undisputed king of the Dim Sim and a worthy runner-up to "Zeke" in the hot dog stakes, but he also annexed successive best and fairests . Such was his dedication that he managed to convince the lovelyDeb to postpone their honeymoon as relegation threatened . It was in these days that Corrers and his best friends such as Jim Bonwick, Roger Paul and Neville Schmidt really carried the club . The last couple of years have seen Corrers in "mode a la veteran" - socks down, bedraggled but still with the ability to pirouette onto either kicking foot(even though he tendsto run upand down on the same spot sometimes) in his role of fatherfigure to the reserves . He has even made the transition to "dangerous forward" and parttime goal sneak - his dozen orso goals have all been cause for celebration . The stocky number ten and champion car rallyist is the Bloods' tenth member of the 200 Club - a worthy climax to a great career from a great clubman . As one with rural aspiration, Thank God he' s a country boy! 100 GAMES AT ROVERLAN D All at Roverland congratulate Mark Young on achieving his 100 game milestone today . Mark commenced playing at the Rovers in 1979 as a member of the Under 15 team . Mark has earned the reputaton as a very reliable player in our backline with his strong and versatile style, his strong marking and attacking play present a problem to any opposition player . Mark's achievements at the Rovers include the 1981 Best and Fairest award in the Under 19sand runner-up in 1982 . Best wishes for today and your next 100, Mark , GENERAL MAKES 5 0 All at State Bank would like to congratulate Grant " General" Crameri on reaching 50 games today . "General" was not a star player when he first started with the club . However he was dedicated and he persevered . He was rewarded for his efforts with promotion to the seniors last year . This year the "General's" strong on field play has served the club immensely and will no doubt be a big factor in the club's finals success . 'J+lel l done General . 150 GAMES AT ST . KILDA CBOC Congratulations to Mark Howard who played his 150th game for the Saints against Parkside last Saturday. A Strong, courageous and fit player Mark sets an example to teammates with his determination to give 100% on all occasions (excluding the $) . `,Ne!l done Mark and all at St . Kilda CBOC thank you for your efforts on and off the field, and we look forward to many more seasons with the club .

Itwasa real form reversai as Old Paradians had beaten Caulfield Grammarians and Marcellin in the previous two games . Ivanhoe's best were C . Stewart, R . Stewart , Stredwick and for Old Paradians, Johnson, Tellefson, Symes . 150 games to Hampton Rovers' ruck mainstay Don 'Village' Scariett - biggest man in the club in "both direction" . 200 games to0id Haiieyburians' g reatclubman, Don Lord.100 gamesto VictorTsakmakis (T'town), Richard Mullett (Old Camb), Mick Wilson (Marc), John Zachariah (Old Xavs), John Mehan (Old Camberwell) . Old Trinity fourth in'A' Section, and four points ahead of Ormond and University Blues, met Ormond in the final game, while Univ . Blues played second bottom team, Monash Blues . Ormond beat Old Trinity, but Blues were much too strong for Monash Blues and regained their place in the finals to go on to meet St. Bernard's in the first semi .
Old Scotch managed to win their first ever game at Queen's Park but failed to spoil the festivities atGeelong's Old Players' Dayattended by some real old timers - first captain-coach Vic Profitt (1926-1930), Ewen Laird (26-28), Ray Fidge (29-33), Pat Wheeler (28-39) and Bill King (30-31) . Congratulations went to Bob Poulton (1937), PeterRobinson ( 1965),and Phillip Marshall (1967) for their wonderful organisation . President of the Umpires' Association was Ken Jorgensen, a former player for over five seasons with Commonwealth Bank, gaining interstate selection in his first year and representing the State on four occasions . Top tipster for the season was Keith Findlay 69 points, with Norm Nugent runner-up, 3 points behind . 15 YEARS AGO - 197 1 St. Bernard's practically clinched a place in the final four when they scored a decisive 45 point win over a sluggish and disappointing Coburg. The win ne rswere bestserved bySullivan, Santamaria and Hannaberry while Warfe,Suiiivan and Zylan tried to keep Coburg in the game . Coburg trailed all day and were never a threat . Ormonds (1 st) kicked eight goals in a brilliant first quarter against University Blues (3rd) and finally won 20 .11 .131 to 13 .14 .92 . Logan (5 goals), R . Curtis and Corben starred for Ormond with Barkley, Nicholls and Renowden best for the losers . Most exciting game of the round was the desperate battle for survival between Old Xaverians and Commonwealth Bank (second last and last in B Section) . No satisfaction to either - a draw - 16 .13 .109 to 15 .19 .109 . Gowers, K . O'Shaughnessy (4) and Raffaele (Old Xavs) and Dick, Torrens, Inbery for Comm . Bank were best . Leading goal kickers were " A" David Barkley (U . Blues) 81 ; "B" Section - Moffat (U . First player to score 100 goals was Martin Bartlett of Power House - 54 goals with the seniors and 52 with the juniors. Congratulationswere passed ontogoai umpires Bifi Ahim and Ralph Bridges, who were nominated for life membership of the Umpires' Association . 20 YEARS AGO - 196 6 University Football Club were celebrating th e

centenary even though recent research had shown that the club was actually formed in 1859 . The club joined the V .A .F .A . in 1921 with the BluesandtheB lacks, and Blackswereimmediately successful, winning premierships in both 1921 and 1922 . Footscray Tech . had a big win in "B" Section, kicking 16 .22 .118 to U .H .S .O .B . 8 .11 .59 . As the scribe said, "Outstanding feature in Foots . Tech's win was the big fellows marking, namely Gary (Shorty) Dempsey. He must have had putty on his fingers. " " B "Section leaders, Kew,showed itssupremacy with a 10 goal win nover De La Salle (fifth) . Briggs ( 4), Crowe and Fisher were Kew's best while Faul, Tame and Murphy starred for De La . 200 games to Kel Davidson (Caulf . Gramm) the first player ever to achieve that record with the club . I n early years a star centre halfback, he has recently been a devastating forward pocket . John Wall of National Bank also reached 200, and again was the first for the club . M .H .S .O.B . regained top place in "A" Section following Coburg's sensational defeat by Old Paradians . Coburg led Parade by 26 points at half time after being well on top but a much more determined Parade blanketed them in the second half and won by 10 points . Coburg's only score after the interval was a goal just before the final siren . Proctor, Danaher and Mansfield were best for Old Paradians and, McIntosh, Scanlon and Dumayne for Coburg . Lowest scoring team for the round wasA .N .Z . Bank's 2 .1 .13 against O .G .G .'s 14 .14 .98 in "D" Section .

35 YEARS AGO - 195 1 Veteran field umpire Jim Walsh retired after 21 years umpiring Amateur matches . Jim had also been honorary secretary of the Umpires' Association for many years and was remembered by many players as a wonderful umpire . In his playing days Jim used to kick goals for Brighton V.F .A . team . (Readers may remember also Jim's sons, Jim (Junior) who played with Comm . Bank and Brian who starred for Ormond and later wnet on to play many wonderful games as a back pocket player for St . Kilda) . In d ifficultwetand greasyconditionsOid Scotch held on to fourth place in "A" Section with a sound win over Ivanhoe . Brian Thomson and "Baron" Jim Perry (ruck) starred for Old Scotch, while Neil Whittaker, Kevin Clarke and Len Irvin were best for Ivanhoe . Ormond Juniors, the only undefeated team in all sections, continued on their winning way with a massive victory over Caulfield Grammarians, kicking 25 .28 to 2 .4 . Best were Bishop (7 goals), CoiWiison(6), Lindsay Shannon and Frank Forbes . Universi ty Blacks (7th), trying to keep in touch with the four, beatthird placed Hampton Rovers by 9 points after trailing by 12 points at half time . Hampton's poor kicking in the first half (6 .12 to Black's 6 .2) contributed to their defeat . Doug Arnold, Rus Warnett and Eric Pearson were best for the Rovers. St. Andrew's kept their chances alive for the "D" Section four with a 3 goal win over St . Pat's O .C. Best were Frank Plummer, "Joe" Dorman and "Marbles" Ellison for St. Andrew's, and Jack Callander, Kevin Currie, Noel Panetteri for St . Patrick's .

50 GAMES AT HEATHERTO N Daryl Patterson played his 50th game for Heatherton against West Brunswick last week . "Patto' is one of the quieter members of the Heatherton side but is one of the most skillful players to have pulled on a bootfor the "Tonners" . His 80 goals last season in our premiership side was achieved either playing in the centre or forward flank . A sensational mark but unpredictable kick " Patto" can win a game off his own boot when in form . Congratulations "Patto" and we look forward to another 50 from you .

with Brian Goodman 250th TO FIELD UMPIRE Congratulations to Richard Tracey who wil l officiate today in his 250th match . Richard joined the V .A .F .A . in 1975 after umpiring school and university matches. Now 12 years later Richard's figures have grown to 111 "A" Section matches and 28 finals . Richard's crowning glory came when he was selected to field umpire the match between the V.A .F .A . and the Victorian Country Football League in Bendigo in 1985 . Richard has been a wonderful ambassadorfor all umpires in his roles as secretary from 19781981 and vice-president in 1982 and president in 1983 . Other highlights of Richard's career are the "B" Section Grand Final in 1984 and the A .A.F.C . Carnival (Victoria and Tasmania) in 1985 . Richard, from all your friends and fellow umpires, we hope you will continue to umpire for many years to come . ALL UMPIRES PLEASE NOTE! ! Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday night the 28th August, 1986 . It is VERY IMPORTANTforall umpirestoattendthismeeting . (Don't forget our Annual Dinner on Monday 25th August) . 100 TO GOAL UMPIR E Last Saturday John Ha! l goal umpired his 100the match . John started umpiring in 1970 as afield umpire with D .D .J .F .L . and in 1973 joined the V .F.L. Reserve Grade Umpires, where he umpired until 1980, had knee problems and was forced to retire . John decided to join the V.A.F .A. as a goal umpire in 1982 . In 1983 John decided to try out the knee and took on field umpiring and after 15 games in the middle, that old knee just wouldn't allow John the pleasure of field umpiring . So back to goal umpiring in 1984 and through listening to others and hard work John has become one of our top goal umpires . John's highlights are 1982 "B" Reserves Grand Final, 1984 "A" Reserves Grand Final, the pinnacle in 1985 "A" Seniors Grand Final . In 1986 so far, john has officiated in the A .A .F .C . Carnival in Adelaide and two V.F .L . Resreve Grade matches at the M .C .G . and V .F .L. Park . John, congratulations on this milestone which we are all sure, is just the beginning of along and successful career.

100 GAMES FOR WOR M Our "one and only" Norm Cooney sporting (sporting a black eye) played his 100th game last Saturday for Old Essendon . Congratulations from everyone at the Club for this lionhearted player, who both on and off the field has shown his dedicated club spirit to one and all . Norm, whojoined the club in 1979 has shown he can play in almostany position (notdaunted bya broken arm in 1979, and dozens of stitches) has proved himself a great utility player earning a number of trophies over the years . He nowjoinsbrotherJim in the Life Membership Club so it looks as if we will have to pay homage forthe nextfew weeks . Norm has missed making an appearance in a Grand Final but should rectify that this year . Thank you Norm, we wish we had more like you .

"RUBBERMAN'S" 100TH AJAX utility player Rick Friedman plays his 100th game with the club this Saturday . One of Ajax's top players and the current deputy vice captain, Rick has given great service both on and off the field . Although quite deceptive in appearance, Rick has natural talent and has become one of the top players in C Grade . Rick joined the club in 1978 and after one or two years off for studies, has seen him return to the club and be one of the club's major kick winners . Whether as a tagger or an attacking player, Rick delights the Ajax fans with his class and continuous smiling face . Well done Rick, and many more with Ajax . ST. LEONARD' S OLD COLLEGIANS ANNUAL DINNER Supporters and players of St . Leonard's are reminded that tickets are now available for the Annual Dinner and Presentation Night to be held on Friday 5th September at the Sandringham Club, 92 Beach Rd ., Sandringham at 7 .30 p .m . Tickets must be pre-booked and are available from any committee member at $15 a head . 100 AT M .H .S .O .B . Today against Hampton Rovers, Ralph Curtis plays his 100th game for MHSOB . While Ralph was at the school he didn't play football, in fact, he didn't start intil mid 1979, playing in the Reserves. He soon developed into a skillful and very courageous player winning the coaches encouragement award in his first year . His tear through, courageous style of football has caused him some problems though at times as he has suffered some serious injuries including a broken nose, broken collarbone and a serious knee injury. However all this has never tempered his ball getting ability . Ralph has spent the last two years on the committee culminating this season as the club treasurer . It is hoped this quiet, unassuming young man is on the committee and around the club for many years to come as his contributions are much appreciated on as well asoffthe field . Congratulations Ralph on reaching a great milestone from all your mates and supporters around the club . 200 GAMES AT ST. KILDA CBOC This week against Old Brighton Brendan "BJ" Jones achieves his 200 games milestone for St . KIIdaCBOC . Brendan joined the club from school in 1975 and has played the majority of his games with the senior team . A talented player'B .J .' is small for a half-back flanker but more than makes upfor his lack of height by his skill, greatcourage, and his fierce desire to attack the ball at all times, an abject lesson to all of us in this regard . Brendan is a past best and fairest winner and has also served on the club committee . Well done 'B .J .' all players and supporters congratulate you on yourfine 200 games achievement and we all hope to see many more good performances from you in the future .
100 AT HEATHERTON All at Heatherton congratulate Cameron "Wormy, Stormtrooper" Womersley on reaching 100 games this week against Balaclava . "Wormy" started with the Heatherton U 15sideand returned to the U 19s five seasons ago . Since then "Wormy" has established himself as a regular goalsneak in the reserves side . "Wormy" has been on the committee for the last 3 seasons and is the club's No . 1 recruiting officer, having brought down nearly half th . "Wormyeclub'spayrovthe4as " very rarely misses a training nightand the improvement in his skills this season this season verifies this . A number of best clubman awards over the years justifies his dedication to the club . From all of us at Heatherton congratulations "Stormboy" and we look forward to the next ton from this popular clubman . 150 UP FOR BALACLAVA STALWAR T All at Balaclava would like to congratulate the very popular Phil "Philbert" McGrath on the occasion of his 150th game for the club against Heatherton today . Phil has thrilled supporters with his vigorous style of play, his strong marking for his size, and his ability to keep going for four quarters . Phil has been an inspiration to his team mates on the ground, and this has been recognised in past seasons with Phil being named as vice captain and deputy vice captain of the senior team . Phil has always been a willing worker around the club, and he has always been a generous giver of his time . Phil was the vice captain and ruck rover in the 1984 premiership side and his consistently good form over that year helped pave the way to that premiership win . Phil has been a trend setter as faras healthy living isconcerned, but itseems to work, as he has the ability to run all day without tiring, much to the chagrin of the opposition player he may be tagging . A very determined player, who often shows the way throughhis own example, Phil is an important cog in Balaclava's aspirations for the flag this year . Congratulations on all your past efforts for the club on and off the field Phil, and we hope to see yourself and Donna around the place for a few more seasons yet . 150 AT ROVERLAND Congratulations to Neil Hope on reaching hi s 150th game at Roverland today. Neil started with the Club in 1979 and achieved the Best and Fairest award in the Reserves in 1981 . Neil has been a very reliable backline playerforthe Club in which he is known for his running down the ground and long kicking out of defence . Neil is also a great team player whether it be helping a fellow teammate or words of encouragement to the rest of the team . Off the field Neil's contribution to the club over the years has been most appreciated . Neil held the position of press correspondent in 1985, has been a member of the social committee, team manager of the Under 1 1 s and is always happy to assist where needed . Keep up the good work Neil, we all look forward to your next milestone at Roverland .

Personality Pars 100 TO TOM GARD OF PARKSID E All at Parkside congratulate Tom Gard on playing his 100th game last week against Old Brighton. Tom started with the J uniorsat Parkside and quickly made a name for himself as a hard, aggressive player . Tom was promoted to the seniors and his ability to win the hard ball was a bonus for the club . Due to work this year finds Tom struggling to get a senior game, however with the finals approaching Tom has been putting plenty of pressure on to be included in the senior team . Once again everyone at Parkside congratulate a Red Devil champion . 150 UP AT BLACKS Congratulations to Paddy Dillon who plays his 150th game today at Uni against Fawkner. Paddy commenced in 1976atBlacks and in hisyearsat the club has proved to be a dedicated and loyal clubman . Paddy sometimes referred to as Marshall is always a reliable and solid defender and is often seentakingcrucial marksinthelastlineofdefence . Amongst his achievements he played Intervarsity in 1977 . He was captain of the Reserves and runner up in the Best and Fairest in 1983. He was also awarded a Certificate of Merit by the MUFC in that year. Under the coaching of John Bushby Paddy relished his role as captain . I n 1984 he wasa memberof the infamous premiership side . Off the field he has served on the committee for many years including a stint as treasurefrom82-85 . EvennowPaddystillperforms one of the most important tasks and that's getting all the beer to the pavvy . Once again well done and all at Blacks thank you for your effort!
ANOTHER 50 AT BLACK S Vince Lavery " Morrison" plays his 50th today against Fawkner . Vince, the ressies very reliable ruckman, has proved to be a greatentertainer as displayed at the Blacks Revue this year . He was also another member of the ressies 84 premiership side . He played Intervarsity in 85 and his team mates that there is another side to the qu iet demur ruckman (only when he is sober) . He has put in around the club running boundary, doing the time, etc . Well done Vince . Let's have a drink to another 50 ! P.S . Hopefully Jack Dempsey will reach his 50th today, last week he was a last minute withdrawal due to illness - here's to a lazy seven today . Well done Jack .
50 AT BRUNSWIC K Brunswick wishes to recognise another 50 game achiever this season - Jeff Gibson congratulations! "Gibbo" reached this tally last week against Williamstown and turned in another good game (Sorry for not having this notice in for last week Henry but better late than never) . Since joining the club in 1984 "Gibbo" has played nearly all of his 50 games in the firsts, including a great finals series last year, and has been a keen and live wirte club member . His help in providing goodies from Tip-Top is much appreciated but we understand there is one thing he is not going to do in future - organise trips for the basketball club . Well done Gibbo, keep the knee bandage clean and we will see many more games in your years to come at Brunswick .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER -- 19r5
Personality Pars NEWS FROM DOVETO N A few more stalwarts at Doveton SJOC have clocked up fiftieth games in recent weeks. Johnny "Hammer" Muirhead, a brilliant defender who, after two season in the reserve side has cracked a regular spot in the senior team, played his 50th game against F.I .T .U .B. An unobtrusive nature off-fieldthat is part of Hammers character can be quite deceiving as he does a good job of wearing his opponent each week . Hammer also does quite a bit to support the club at the social level too . Also up for his 50th game recently is Richard Gibbs, a speedy little rover who has become part of the Doveton SJOC success story in recent seasons . Richie still has quite a lot of football in him and we would hope to see it in Doveton's efforts to climb the Grades . Finally fifty games under the belt to our spectacular rover Percy Ashwood . Percy, who was selected to train with last years C,D,E,F team usually isa key partofanywinning side at Power Reserve and almost unstoppable when he gets hisgame going . Congratulations to these blokes for accomplishing these milestones and many more games to come (we hope!!!) . Doveton SJOC players and supporters would like to congratulate Andy Currie on playing his fiftieth game, fifteen weeks after the ball . Andy is quite a useful wingman and a team player in the true sense of the phrase . Andy's first season with SJOC wwas our nightmare 82 season . Even that didn't scare him away . Andy deserves as much as any player to be part of a successful finals campaign, which with players like Andy, we hope to have this year . Also up for 50 games recently, despite the occasional injury, is Jack " The Veteran" Stanley. Jack has made his mark as a player, fashion leader and (it brings tears to the eyes) president of Doveton SJOC . Jack usually plays in defence, but has played at half forward and full forward and kicked goals from either position . No doubt Jack, like a true vet, will be around for a long time to come . Well done Jack . Upfor his 100th game on the eve of the finals, and who is probably as dedicated to Doveton SJOC as any person has been, is Mark " Frosty" Wilkinson . As a player generally on the wing or as first rover in recent years in the reserve team, Frosty's concern has been for more than his own game, and has "coached" a few players individually to better things than they thought possible of themselves . Frosty has also had the unenviable job of balancing our bank books for two seasons (his Livelihood) while playing -adifficultcombination to juggle to be sure . To a man with enthusiasm and inspiration to spare when we need it most, congratulations from all club members and players . We would probably have not survived this long if we didn't have people like Frosty .
"GEZZA" GETS 50 AT RED Z All Redders congratulate Gerry "Gezza" Moloney on playing his 50th game last week against St. Bede's. After a few interrupted seasons'Gez' has made it to the half ton and has never been known to give anything less than 100% in any one of them . With the number of players who come and go at the Reda it is lucky for someone to make it to 10 games but it is a loyal few players like Gezza who form the backbone of the club . Well done Gezza .
