Last week's results went very much as predicted (except for Peter's and my sefection of Marcellin just what Mike McArthur-Allen needed!) with the result that Bulleen-Templestowe missed out and Marcellin was relegated along with Ivanhoe.
Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1 888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war. Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U .S.A . Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .
Australia's ~~~lEa- Leer .
The Eagles were overwhelmed byOrmond by 82 points . Marcellin started well and led by 11 pointsat quarter time . But that was the end of it as Ormond went on to add 18 goals to 4 . The crunch came in the early part of the third quarter when Ormond booted 4 quick goals into the breeze . Ormond managed to keep their forward line open this week and had many goalkickers . By contrast Marcellin's forwards, apartfrom Rick Petroff with 4 goals, were held in check bythe McDonald brothers, Mark atcentre half back and David at full back. Caulfield Grammarians had a worrying time against University Blues at Elsternwick, winning byjust 2 goals . Caulfield had the edge on account of their 6 goals into the breeze in the second quarter and led by 5 goals at half time . But Blues came back and but for bad kicking might have got up . Alan Nalder notched another 5 goals for the 'Fields, Don McInnes 4 for the Blues . North Old Boys destroyed any hope Bulleen-Templestowe had of making the four when they beat them by 13 points at Timber Ridge . It was a good game - a big crowd and the best display by the Bullants for 6 weeks or so . Sadly their form came too late . Bulleen led at quarter time after first use of the wind but a poor second quarter of only 2 points really cost them the game . Vin Asdagi has had a consistent season and he contributed 4 goals . North were well served byforwards Luke Morse and th e ageless Jerome Griffin at centre half forward . Collegians have strung 15 wins together, the last over De La Salle by 49 points . Colle g ians usual seocnd quarter burst of 6 goals put them in command . The Lion defence was supreme - Gary Irvine, Andrew Wright, Stuart Hinchen and Greg Parsons . Mick Green outrucked his Lion opponents and gave good use of the ball to ruck rovers Greg McHenry and Gary Connolly . Old Scotch finished with a 31 point win over Ivanhoe, but it wasn't until the third term that Scotch broke clear . The Cardinals small men of centreman Brian Hodge and rover Ric Senior were very prominent . Peter Sherwen got 5 goals at full forward . Wally Dutevskis rucked well for the 'Hoes and Rb Stewart at half back was as reliable as ever . A Section Preview by Ross Boot h Peter French has handpassed me this difficult job . It is only since I've sat down and tried to place tne teams in positions that I've realised how hard it is! Both coaches John Pollard (De La Salle) and Mike McArthur-Allen (Ormond) will have been trying to do the same all week . I bet both get closer to the actual line-ups than I do! And they have to, because tagging will undoubtedly playan important part in the match, especially for the well prepared De La Salle . Peter wanted a man-on-man preview . But Peter, if I do that I'll lose friends and have it used as inspirational material by coaches! I'd be sure to get a lot of the positions wrong so I'll stick to generalities . It is safer that way! People will still talk to me at the end of the day I hope . The score stands at 1-1 so far this season with the away side winning both times . Most recently De La Salle 11 .7 (73) defeated Ormond 5 .5 (35) at the Gunn Reserve, but that was in the mud back in July! Both coaches will be asking a few questions . Will Mick Deveson play? He didn't last week . An d ,Andrew Hill, the young Ormond full forward who broke his collarbone against Collegians? Remeber Phil Mehrten's grand final display last year up forward . Will Ormond try him there again ? It seems to me that Ormond have problems in their forward division . their key forward positions could be occupied by Mark McDonald, Scott taylor or Brad Nash . They might have to play on Peter Ryan and Dick Williams - neither of them verytall . De La Salle have their forward troubles too. With Deveson out, De La Salle have had a makeshift forward set up . If Karin plays it might be at centre half forward with young Peter Pennie at full forward though Wayne McDonald played there last week . Whatever the setup, they will face tough tasks against Martin Crampton at full back and David McDonald at centre half back, should they line up that way. If Ormond's Phil Mehrten plays in the centre he shold have a grand duel with Tim Cooke . Both have been in great fomr . Ormond might have the edge on the wings with either Phil Kingston, Mark Gilmore or Geoff Russell though De La's David Harrington has been in good form .
A lot will depend on De La's Mick Greene in the ruck . On-ball players Gary Connolly, Greg McHenry and Mark Lowe have been getting a lot of first use of the ball as has Pat Maher in defence in a similar vein . Alan Naylor will give his best for Ormond but wont have the mobility around the ground of Greene . Mind you Ormond have rover Andy Mehrten running into form plus Joe Young and Tony Boyanton in support . Whatabout Russell Barnes, the Ormond captain? He is an inspiration for hisclub whether in defence or on the ball . Half back Craig Clark has been a useful youthful inclusion since the start of the season . De La's Carl Anderson has been in good touch too in defence . The more I look at it the harder I find it to pick the winner . I don't have a strong gutfeeling this week it usually helps in selection! De La Salle have been a little more consistent than Ormond in recent weeks and since Mike McArthur-Allen hasn't sent me a copy of the teams line-up I'll tip De La Salle. Sorry John ! In B Section, I was impressed with the enthusiasm of Fawkner last week . don't be surprised if they upset Parkside . Fawkner for mine!
Personality Pars DOVETON SJOC Glenn Malloy reached another milestone recently by kicking more than 400 goals since 1982 . Well done Muddy, and we hope that you will continue to fire for povpton SJOC in the finals . U.H .S.O.B . - 250 GAME S Several weeks ago [an Chettle became the first player at Uni High to reach the 250 game milestone . Since 1971 it has taken Che tts 16 years of dedicated on-field service to reach this target . During this time Ian has won 2 reserves Best and Fairests and was a member of the 1984 and 1985 Reserve Premiership sides . Ian played well in the first half of last year's Gran Final but went to sleep in the second half . On the field Ian is mainly known as a close-checking backman who always punches from behind . However, this year he has been seen in the forward line and is shooting up the goal kicking Ikadder with a huge total of 4 . Off the field Ian has held many positions : Press Correspondent for 4 years, Executive Committee Member for 6 years and has been V .A .F.A . delegate since 1979. Ian was justly awarded Life Membership in 1985 . The committee, players and supporters of Uni High congratulate Ina on his remarkable achievement and we are all hoping the "Chetts" will front up again in '87 because "Sparra" keeps on keeping on . Well done Ian!! ! 100 GAMES AT ROVERLAND Congratulations to Paul Pavlou on reaching his 10 0 game milestone today. Pav commencing in the Under 19's in 1979 and has been a great asset to the Club both on and off the field . Known around the Club as the "black Barassi", Pav provides many an opportunity for the forward line . Pav received the Most Improved award in the Reserves in 1984 and his determination on the field is one of the reasons the reserves has once again made the finals . Pav has been an active committeeman for the past six years holding the positions of Assistan Secretary, Registration Secretary, Social President and this year canteen manager . Best wishes for today Pav from all at Roverland and we look forward to your next milestone , THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLcR 1986
ANOTHER BANKER REACHES 5 0 All at State Bank would like to congratulate Dac-3 Grant on playing his 50th for the club today . Like his "twin" Dave started at the club in 1984 and although possessed with great ability struggled to maintain a permanent position in the side . With new coaches at the club this year Dave was moved to the backline and has blossomed . Dave's form was so good that he even won senior selection mid way through the year. Again, well done Dave and we hope to see you at the club for at least another 50 . THERRY Therry would like to congratulate the followin g players on being ajudged the best and fairest for their respective sides : Seniors - Gerrard Biddleston i~ , Reserves - Michael Donohue, U .19's - Micha>1 Keenan, Club XVIII - Peter Kelly . Gerrard Bi ?dlestone has capped off a fine season as captain of the seniors and thoroughly deserves the title of club champion for 1986 . Michael Donohue finished the season as the Reserves leading goalkicker and has had a very consistant year . Michael Keenan was a tremendous leader for the U .19's and made several fine contributions for his side . Well done boys and good luck for next year. 100 UP AT O.M .F.C. All at O.M .F.C. would like to congratulate Vinnie Sciacca on playing his 100th game today . Vince has played many good games for Old Mentonians and has developed into a very reliable player on the wing . He is noted for his dummy handballs and ability to take strong grabs. Being a crowd pleaser Vince also likes to play on one side of the ground all day. Well done Vinnie . 50 FOR BRUNO Congratulations to Bruno Skalza who plays hi s 50th game today. Bruno who has been playing with the Reserves has finally made the Seniors and is playing well . Playing in the bakcline he always tries to turn defence into attack with his penetrating kicks, and bores in after the ball often . Well done Bruno and good luck for the next 50. 4
Peter French Previews Today's Semi Finals in A , B & 11C. Section
What a great game we've been given to kick off the 1986 final series in A Section - a replay of the 1985 Grand Final between two proud and highly decorated clubs . De La Salle and Ormond . De Al is no stranger to the sudden death position of the first semi having won in a canter last season against North whilst Ormond's last first simi appearance was back in 1982 when they were easily defeated by Marcellin and caused some raised eyebrows by appearing in the Big White 'V' . Looking at the two sides they are evenly matched in many positions . Across the centre, a vital line at Elsternwick Park, De La boasts an in form David Harrington who moroften than not saves his best for finals at Elsternwick where his elusiveness, strong marking and left foot set up manyattacking moves . He shall be opposed by either Kingston or Russell and eitherwill be of equal value to the'Monds . Mike Pt1cArthur-Allen has something of a problem with his centre line, especially as Paul Sutherland has returned to the side where surely he will not be selected as full forward especially when one remembers his best on ground display from the centre wing in last years second semi win over Collegians . Still thats Mike's problem not mine or John Pollards! I think Ormond will hold sway across the centre as whoever the Ormond selection panel play on the wing he will beat young Klarica and in spite of the regard I and others hae forTim Cooke, Phil Mehrten will control the pivot . His consistency, strength atthe ball and team spiritare of inestimable value to the'Monds and when things get tough the cries of "Lift'em Chunky" echo round the ground . If one can be critical of the Ormond coaching bench for a moment it is that they've used Mehrten P as a troubleshooter too often, and lost his drive from the centre or on the ball . To Mehrten's credit he has handled the moves well and has in my opinion put in his best ever season for the club . Speaking of moves I listened with interest to an address from Bill Jacobs of 3AW fame during the week as guest of the V .A .F .A . Umpires Association . Bill informed the gathering of Collingwoods Perc Bowzer who was used in a variety of positions in Collingwood's 1929/30 and 1935/36 Premiership sides, which all goes to suggest that there's nothing new or revolutionary with placing players in a variety of positions . Ormond's defence is sound although they will be hoping Martin Crompton has recovered from injury and can line up in his accustomed position atfull backthus releasing David McDonal to centre half back where flanked by Clark and Barnes they form the frist line of a somewhat ordinary attack! However more of that later. Although Barnes was tried as a half forward and ruck rover last week and kicked 3 goals he must return to half back and if I was McArthur-Allen I'd have him mark the dangerous Peter Rennie. Another problem for Ormond is whether to risk Guy Ritchie. It was a tribute to Guy that he returned to football this season after suffering such a serious knee injury last season, but the dual club best and fairest winner is made of the right stuff and despite a fair effort last Saturday there must be some doubts over his fitness . With reliables Ross Tonkin and David Cro ffy in the pockets Ormond can be satisfied that they will hold De La to a losing score . De La one notices have had Phil Kerin upfield and rucking in recent weeks, and left the spearhead to Rennie . I'm of the opinion that at Elsternwick Park Karin should play full forward and Rennie further up field . The strong marking of Karin is his great asset and with De La's ability to move the ball quickly there should be many "one on one" chances for the big man to use his strength and convert from relatively close in . Mark Lowe will be nuisance value in one poc -cet and although he will out pace either Crony or Ritchie he will lack the Ormond man's strength . Nevertheless if he kicks 3 or 4 goals he will have done his job . On the flanks De La may change Peter Ryan and Gary Connolly both of whom will worry Clark although the promising youngster will outmark either . On the other side Wayne McDonnell who may even be asked to line up at centre half forward must be watched closely . He is a beautiful kick and has loads of experience . The main problem for De La is the vital centre half forward position, and whoever is given the job has a big task ahead of him . At the other end Ormond too has its worries . In the key posts we are likely to see David McDonald who has been down of late and possibly young Brad Nash, although I feel Ormond will go with Taylor . With Boyonton and Nash beside him height may be a problem and De La's Brian Hanrahan and Peter Waldron supported by Greg McHenry and Paddy Maher will hold sway here . Across De La's half back line where there must be some doubt over Mick Deveson, Dick Williams is solid and experienced and one continues to hear good reports of Carl Anderson . they will need to be on their job as I have high regard for Joe Young who will be given a run on the ball and interchange with both Boyanton and Andrew Mehrten . Nash is the likely man on the other flank and where he will appreciate and capitalize on any opportunities .
THE-AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986

De La will win in the ruck because Mick Greene is the most highly regarded followere in A Section and Connolly and Maher are dangerous and consistenct ruck rovers and link men . Ormond will more than likely go with Naylor and Herkess off the bench and rely on its roving trio to collect the crumbs . I see Ormond's forward line as its biggest headache and De La's fitness of one or two of its real champions . My selection is ORMOND despite its poor run into the finals . I believe they will lift for the occasion and can cover De La's strengths . If the De La and Ormond game wets the appetite in A Section, then the B Section 1st Semi between Parkside and Fawkner is a gourmet's delight . I was lucky enough to be in the right place atthe righttime last week - University Oval - where the Blacks and Fawkner met in what was really an elimination final . I'm prepared to say it's the best game of Amateur Football I've seen this season and regretted leaving with 15 minutes to go at which time Fawkner led by just 3 points. If Fawkner does well in the final series it should, to quote club secretary Allan Henderson "Build a monument" to Harry Busst . His game last Saturday was sheer inspiration and if he can handle the Black's big men, Nick Heath and James Garde he can certainly handle Parkside's Goran Yoksich . However where Fawkner may come undone is around the packs, as even with the expected return of Mark Majerczak their small men are not in the same league as Parksides John Papas, the ageless King, Griffiths and captain coach John Wise . Majerczak does his best work up forward whilst Greg Mitchell although a hard worker at the ball, lacks the finesse of his more experienced opponents . The ruck-roving duels will be full of interest with Parksides Greg Williams up against Fawkners Brendon Saggers, over whom there is some doubt fitness wise and Mark Tymms a players of great ability and who appears to handle pressure well Fawkner may just have the edge in this area . Up forward the clash between Fawkners Trevor Price and . Parksides Franklin will have a direct bearing on the result . Price likes to fly from behind but has uncanny judgement and proves his value by rucking on the forward line . Frank Sansonetti may well pick up Fawkners John O'Leary wo did well on Rod Lewis last week . Across the centre Parkside will be looking for drive from Mark Sturgess . However he will not have it all his own way as Andrew Brown of Fawkner will appear as an unknown . The former Old Haileybury player possesses all the skills and will prove a worthy opponent . In the centre we find two of the better players in B Section . Mark Page of Parkside and Steven "Skills" Hills (a very appropriate nickname that) of Fawkner. I suspect they will play wide of one another and that Page will win more possessions but the Fawkner man is possibly the best foot pass in both sides and does not waste a kick, honours will be about even . The Devils will need a big game from Ollie Filipovic and a disciplined one from Freeman . They will surely be tested Rhodes and Stephen Buckley whose kicking to position from full bakc and coolness under byShane pressure last Saturday had much to do with Fawkners win . Fawkner I believe rely heavily on Rhodes . He is an excellent mark for his size and his left foot turn leaves opponents standing . He was well supported by Habgood as was Buckley by Gray . Parksides are fortunate in that Sansonetti can play either centre half back or centre half forward which leaves Bradley free to ruck or fill in at one of the other key positions . Gee this will be a good game and in going for Fawkner l do so as a result of their display against Parkside back on July 26th . On that occasion they led Parkside to the ball and played with a greater degree of urgency . Last Saturday the pattern was similar in that they had numbers at the ball and worked harder around the ground . They will miss Terry Young who has a broken hand and provided they play to instructions and keep their minds on the job they should prove too fast and slick for Parkside, although I doubt if there will be much in it at the end . In C Section Ajax should handle the Bentleigh ground better than Banyule and progress to the Preliminary, whilstat Northcote I believe Old Trinity will return to B Section by defeating Thomastown .

Norm Nugent Reviews and Previews D, E, F, G and U19 Matches
REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 23 D . The surprise result of the last round was the seventeen point victory by Heathe rton against trend setter Balaclava . As tipped North Brunswick proved too strong for West Brunswick and sent the Magpieway s back t EofSectionn ..8o7m ona s h Blues rejoined the winning listagainst Coburg who fel l a ort maintaicomt i hnge e198 7h o rm . O Ivanhoe with a sixteen goal victory Powerhouse from the section . Today's first semi final preview saw Preston return to the winning listsent at the expense of Old Mentonians . E . Great results for your tipster were those in the last round of E Section as your tipster picked the five winners . State Bank proved too strong for an inaccurate Brunswick . Unbeaten leaders Bulleen United maintained their enviable record against Williamstown while Peninsula Old Boys ran out very easy winners over Clayton . Old Geelong were too talented for the bottom side University Reds who now can regroup in F Section come 1987 . Elsternwick played with dash against St. Bedes and emerged comfortable victors . F . Another spectacular tipping success was the selection of each F Section winner in the last round of matches . A.N .Z . Bank proved my forecast inaccurate when they offered strong opposition to leaders Old Essendon . University High School Old Boys received only token resistance from Footscray Institute who lost by over thirty goals . Only the accuracy of La Trobe University forwards enable their side to account for Commonwealth Bank who had more of the play . In the remaining two games Doveton and St. Andrews kicked cricket type scores against Whitefriars and St . Leonards respectively The heavy defeat of Whitefriars must have proven disheartening as they meet Doveton again today . . G . Old Carey were not extended as they easily disposed of Eltham College while in the other match G .T.V.9 proved far too strong for Parkside whose display was not in keeping with their previous good form . Monash Whites had the bye . J .1 . North Old Boys maintained their place in the section when they accounted for University Blues Melbourne High sent Old Scotch from the section when they recorded a huge victory by forty one. goals . De La Salle insures a final's appearance when they easily defeated Marcellin . In the remaining game leaders Ormond inflicted a ten goal defeat on Old Xaverians. Bulleen-Templestowe had the bye . J .2 . Only one game was played in this section and it resulted in Old Haileybury easily defeating St . Bernards and thus maintain second place . In an unusual occurrence finalist Old Melburnians to fifth side Therry while Thomastown and Collegians won by default against University Blacksforfeited and Old Brighton respectively . J .3 . Two games were played in this section St. Kilda defeated Caulfield Grammarians who have proven a difficult side for the two leading teams over the last two rounds . Hampton Rovers had over one hundred points to spare when they defeated Williamstown . In not an ideal lead up to finals Old Paradians and Ivanhoe received forfeits from Old Camberwell and Monash Blues respectively . PREVIEW OF MATCHES 30th AUGUST . D . FIRST SEMI FINAL : Preston and Old Mentonians meet again this week at Monash University . In previous matches this season Preston won at home on June 21 by thirty eight points while last week they won at Keysborough by twenty eight points . Preston's rapid rise sine 1984 has given its players greater final's experience . It has the stronger attack as Hepburn has proven a danger to all Preston opponents while Coach is a proven player with extensive V .F .A . final's experience . Preston lifted their form last week Meese whereas Old Mentonians have lost their last two games against sides which play close and contest with ferocity . Today I believe Preston will win again . D . SECOND SEMI FINAL : Monash Blues and Balaclava meet at Pitcher Park for the right to promotion and to Grand Final entry . Balaclava won their last encounter on August 9 when the accuracy of each side was markedly different . In their first 1986 meeting Balaclava won on June 14 by thirty nine points . The students have no main focal point on their forward line whereas Balaclava's Crottie is the leading sectional goalkicker . On August 9 while Crottie wa held other Balaclava forwards managed to kick a winning score . The THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1986 7
scoreboard that day showed these players were not subjected to great pressure when they had the opportunity to score . Conversely the Monash inaccuracy that day must have been caused in part by pressure exerted by Balaclava defenders. Attitude will paly a big part in deciding this game and as University sides traditionally play on confidence early success could stimulate Monash to go on to victory . As this factor is indeterminable i select Balaclava because of their earlier victories and their better recent form . E . FIRST SEMI FINAL : Both Peninsula and Elsternwick had big wins last week and so each should be in fine fettle for today's game at Hampton . Over the season the'Wicks have the better record and I believe they will handle the final's pressure better than Peninsula . In addition Karapidis has been a more reliable goalkicker for Elsternwick than has any one player in the Peninsula line-up . Elsternwick is my selection . E . SECOND SEMI FINAL : Unbeaten Bulleen United and State Bank meet on the spacious and quality turf of the Harry Trott Oval . Although the vagaries of the Albert Park winds will suit State Bank better than Bulleen United, the big ground will also enable a fast open game to be played . This will suit Bulleen United whose attack, despite missing the suspended Quarrel, will now be channelled via the evergreen Divirgilto . State Bank reliable forwards Jenkins and Carboon must be watched closely or they could kick their side to victory . However I believe overall talent will see Bulleen United win and thus move to D Section . F. FIRST SEMI FINAL : Last week ;s opponents Doveton and Whitefriars meet again . Doveton's recent form has been high class and following theirthrashing of Whitefriars lastweek the gold and browns must be favoured to win again . Mallon is proving a focal point for poveton forwards who have been able to boot very high scores over recent weeks . As i cannot see Whitefriars bridging the thrity five goal gap in seven days Doveton is my selection . . F . SECOND SEMI FINAL : The two leading sides for most of the season Old Essendon and University High School Old Boys meet at St. Bernards. Essendon's only loss this season was to University High by fifteen points on July 26 . The Essendon side has had two secure avenues to goal via Simmons and Egan whereas the highest University High goal kicker has been Kufner . Last Saturday University High displayed the better form but today I believe Essendon will prove their top rating with victory and promotion to E . G . FIRST SEMI FINAL : The enigmatic Parkside side meet G .T .V.9 again, this time in Albert Park . On their day Parkside are capable of beating all opponents while G .T .V.9 have many individual stars led byTony Fox . G Section form has been hard to follow but I cannot see Parkside bridging the seventeen goal gap G .T.V .9 was able to build last week so G .T.V .9 should win today . G . SECOND SEMI FINAL : Old Carey and Monash Whites have won the right to play in this game through consistently good performances during the season . Both have a sprinkling of talented big and little players who combine well around the ground . Carey have a key forward Hearn who can win the game off his won boot . Skipper McMahon who does weel in ruck duels is able to bring others into the game . For Monash the Salvatore Brothers and Bruce Ninnis are great triers and will give their best al I day . The sides are fairly evenly matched and the result can o either way . Without any great confidence I select Monash Whites . J .1 . FIRST SEMI FINAL: Bulleen Templestowe and De La Salle meet on the pecularly shaped Oval 2 which in days past was the De La Salle home ground . both sides have had similar seasonal success and are evenly matched . Bulleen Templestowe may benefit from last week's bye and I fancy them to emerge victorious . De La Salle will contest the outcome until the final siren but I believe the final bell with find them in deficit. J .1 . SECOND SEMI FINAL : Ormond and Melbourne High School Old Boys meet on the Ross Gregory Oval which may suit the Melbourne High players better because of its size . Ormond has been the leading side all season and I believe they will prove too strong for Melbourne High today . J .2. FIRST SEMI FINAL : In the first semi final at Old Xaverians, St. Bernards play Old Melburnians who had to forfeit last Saturday which was hardly good preparation for a final . St . Bernards form overthe season has been the stronger and I believe they will win today . J .2 . SECOND SEMI FINAL : Collegians who lead the section play Old Haileybury at Old Scotch . Colleg ians won their last encounter on August 9 by two goals, so the neutral ground today should bring Old Halleybury closer . Collegians have the better overall performances although statistically Old Halleybury is the better side . To select the winner is a difficult taks. In a line ball decision I select Collegians . J .3 . FIRST SEMI FINAL : Ivanhoe and Hampton Rovers meet at Melbourne High in what promises to be a hard fought game . Ivanhoe have given some creditable performances as have Hampton Rovers . There is no doubting the strength of the Rovers defence while Ivanhoe's forwards have been the more active of the two . Ivanhoe move the ball well around the ground and I believe they will gain sufficient possessions to kick
the winning score over Hampton Rovers . J .3 . SECOND SEMI FINAL: The season's top sides meet at De La Salle as both Old Paradians and C.B .C . St . Kilda have each suffered only one loss to each other when visiting . Parade will have to check the strong forward play of M ann while St. Kilda must cut the supply lines to Parade's Kerr . Parade must nullify St . Kilda stars namely Fitzroy, Jackson, Dynon and Murphy whilst to nullify Parade's strengths the Saints must quieten Regan, Peyton, Jowett and Beck . I fancy the Paradians to win because I believe their stronger centre line and running players will be able to win the ball often enough to allow their forwards to kick the winning score .

* THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986
ith Brian Goodanan 100 UP FOR DARK MIDGET As we start the final series, we pause to congratulate Little Kevin Segota on umpiring his 100th match today. Kevin started field umpiring in 1978 with the Dandenong Distric League and joined the V .A.F.A . in 1979 and umpired until 1982 where he then joined the V.FL . cadel squad, Kevin rejoined the VA .FA . (due to a small stomach problem) in 1986 . Kevin's achievements in his short career so far are : 'D' Res. Grand Final, `C' Res . Grand Final, 'B' Res . Grand Final and 'D' Senior Grand Final . Kevin says his highlights were gaining selection to the 'A' Section Panel and umpiring a 'B' Section match at Elsternwick Park with his older brother Joe . Kevin remembers that day very well, because no matter what happened "Segota" paid the wrong decision . Well done, Kevin on this milestone and we hope you will continue to achieve success for many years to come . This week I would like all umpires to read and remember this article submitted by Wayne Henry. The Umpire - A Winner? I am honoured to have received this appointment . But I will not be content until the final siren sounds to end the game and I have achieved my prime objective. I have given my utmost performance. There is no -)lace for a second rate job, I want to be a winner. I have to perfor ~ from the ground up - from the souls of my feet, rot up to my head, every part of my body has to be committed - my brain, my legs, my heart, espec. .ally my heart . My finest hour, my greatest fulfilment of all I hold dear is that moment when I have worked my heart out in a good cause and slump exhausted at the conclusion of the game - victorious - A Winner.
After an extensive recruiting campaign at the end of last season it appeared as though we would have sufficient numbers to cater for all matches . However, when training commenced in early February a big number of those people who indicated their desire to umpire did not appear. Also, during the course of this season we have lost 21 field umpires for various reasons . Fortunately, we may not have had the quantity but we certainly have the quality and this has shown in the number of younger field umpires who have progressed through the sections, therefore the future looks very bright, especially for 1987, if these umpires can be retained . We were most fortunate this year to have Pat Bowd as our Training Supervisor and he was ably assisted by Graham Cavanagh, and I thank both fellows for their expertise in the quality and variation of training . To our goal umpres Adviser, Julian Velleman who again has done a marvellous job with the goal umpires . I thank him for his efforts and support, and due to Julian's coaching the goal umpires are a tight knit and dedicated group. I also take this opportunity to publically thank my "right hand man" Graeme Simpson for his tireless efforts, his guidance and tolerance this season . Amateur football is certainly the richer for having Graeme in their ranks for so long and recognition of his service to the Amateurs was acknowledged earlier this season . The following "ex umpires" who have observed matches this year in rain, hail or shine deserve praise and recognition for their contribution to umpiring, namely, Roy Johnston, Ken Jorgensen, Peter King, Wayne Lyons, Foster Rosse tto and Graham Cavanagh . THE BLACK LIS T To all tea, ns participating in the Finals I wish them well and also to our umpires who will be officiating BULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE (Sen . & Res .) - (Ca) - $10 this is the culmination of months of hard work, of OLD BRIGHTON (Cb & Cc) - $2 0 blood, sweat and tears, and to walk out onto the ground to umpire a Final is the just reward for your OLD HAILEYBURY (Sen . & U .19) - (Ca) - $10 efforts OLD MENTONIANS (Cb & Cc) - $2 0 . 100 TO NICK SCHMIDT Congratulations from all Collegians, and no doubt all Amateur Football Supporters, are extended to the Lions Uf19 (Zone 2) Full-Forward Nick Schmidt who kicked his Hundredth goal for the season against Old Melburnians on the 16th day of August, 1986 . Hs is the first, and perhaps the only V .A .F.A . footballer to reach the 100 goal target in 1986 . Nick, who is a key to the U/19's Premiership hopes, is currently celebrating his achievement somewhere on the Gold Coast! All Collegians have their fingers crossed that he is not enjoying himself too much and will return in sufficient time and satisfactory shape to dominate in our Second Semi Final game against Old Haileyburians . Well done Nick . 50 Games to " Dobbo" Ashley Dobson also knotched up his 50th game last week . Dobbo joined the club in 1984 and immediately stamped his mark on the half back or back pocket positions . A solid defender never giving the rovers or ruck rovers a rest Dobbo the "Quiet Achiever" can always be relied on to clear the ball under pressure with a minimum of fuss . Congratulations from all at O .T.s Dobbo, looking forward to your next 50 . Christopher Brent 50 Games : C .B . who has always had an uncanny sense of timing, not to mention goal sense, surprised all and sundry in arriving back from his offshore extravaganza just in time for the finals AND his fifty games . Chris has somehow in his travels managed to loose some of his "Bulk" from previous years to step comfortably into the firsts side and the upcoming finals . Chris topped the E and D Sections goalkicking in 1984/85 respectively and has lost none of his old magic in 1986 . Well Done C.B . Next Weeks Finals Fifty's - Ian Wallace, Chris Glass, Steve Stoddart . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

FINALS 50s AT OLD TRINIT Y 50 Games Nick Sammut: Congratulations go to Nickalus "The Gaff" Sammut who played his 50th game last week against Kew . Always keeping a low profile around the club Nick made a dramatic appearance onto the ground last week wearing the infamous "White Boots" of Carman, Mercer, Maizels fame, ending up on the bench, the curse lingers on . Nick is a fine contributor at all social functions despite consistant and ongoing lines of abuse to all and sundry . The club and supporters again congratulate you for you 50 and hope you have the proper boots on for todays match . 13

MACCA BITES THE BULLITT ! No doubt V .A .F .A . President John Dillon was amazed by the scenes at McKinnon Oval as Old Haileyburians' Don McQueen made his annual return to the fray . Whats more, The Living Legend ran at the ball like a half back flanker, gathered as a crack centre half forward only could, piroutted in true rovers style and finished off the job with a left foot snap that would do Warwick Capper proud (even if the shorts were a slightlydifferentfitand the SydneySwan hasa toothier grin)! Only disappoinment of the whole scene was that the goal wasn't a drop kick . Invigorated by his performance, the coach "dragged" his goal-sneak00 find early in the second term for pon to rest those delicate hamstrings over luncheon . He shouldn't get too carried away, however : even "Kingo" scored a goal!

Dear Editor, After my first letter to you everyone else has remained silent . Well the season has ended form many who have done a lot for Amateur Football so we thank them all while the rest of us slug out the finals . The Herald for its help when scores are inaccurate, the line goes dead or we drop our notes on the floor . The same goes for George and Nancy McTaggart for their patience and understanding . As a Press Correspondent it annoys me at times to have to report "Goalkickers and Best players not supplied", Lets hope 1987 sees an improvement .Congratulationstoallthefinalsides . Brian Lugar

BULLEEN UNITED UNDEFEATED FOR SEASON Bulleen United attained the goal few sides get a chance at by completing the home and away round of 18 matches undefeated, with an easy 82 point victory over Williamstown to be five games clear of second on the ladder. Despite a poor start of 2 .8 in the first term, the Bulls were never really challenged, settling down after withstanding some rough-house play by Williamstown trying to avoid relegation . Great play by Alf Dirv irgilio with 5 goals, Kelly, Goldsmith & Creighton 3 each and Snape, Morley & Empey in key posiitions . Bulleen United won 19.23.137 to 8.7.55 are now looking forward to the finals with relish .
The Reserves showed excellent form in a 111 Point victory 21 .16.142 to 4 .7.31 over the fifth placed side, to finish third . The teamwork shown in the first half portends a big threat to the other sides in the finals, with ZORZI, ZIOGAS & BOWDEN showing great pace Thompson bagging 4 goals, Berkfeld, Hocking & Bowden 3 each . Bulleen won 21 .16 to 4.7 . The Bulls appreciate the supporters who help along on the sidelines and will not disappoint those who come to see good, fast modern football . The Senior second semi final is to be played on Harry Trott Oval, Albert Park at 2 .00 p.m . on the 30th of August between Bulleen United & State Bank, and the Reserves first semi at 11 .45 a.m . against Elsternwick on the same day at Hampton Rovers Ground .
VAFA representative teams have enjoyed the comfort of wool for the last two seasons . Players like Ormond's David McDonald seen here in the Woolblendmark jum p er worn in the 1985 State Games, and Old Brighton's Peter Grant wearing the new Woolblendmark jumper for season 1986, enjoy the feeling of wool eve ry week because Old Brighton is one of a growing number of VAFA clubs making the change to Woolblendmark jumpers. They're making that change MADE EXCLUSIVELY because they know that wool FO R provides maximum comfort AUSTRALIAN SPORT IN whether players are performin g WOOL RICH BLEND in hot or cold conditions .
And no matter how many times they're machine washed or commercially
laundered, Woolblendmark jumpers stay in shape, season after season . That's why Woolblendmark has VAFA endorsement, because nothing touches wool for economic performance that just goes on and on .
Woolblendmark jumpers are made to Australian Wool Corporatio n -n.

Foster's symbol of Auztralia ` v almost ,~n`~ ÂŽ ÂŽ
Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S .A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .
Australia's favourite beer.
De La Salle reversed last year's Grand Final result with a 51 point win over Ormond in last week's first semi-final . In what was expected to be an even contest De La ran right over Ormond in the second half, kicking 11 goals to 2 . De La lost both Mick Deveson and Chris Campbell through injury on the morning of the match and Ormond recalled young forward Andrew Hill who had been out with a broken collarbone . quarter to give Ormond an And it was Hill who proved a handful for Brain Waldron early in the first It was just that De La used the early 15 point lead . Not that Ormond had most of the play - they didn't .Kerin and Peter Rennie . ball very indiscriminantly up forward with long ill-directed kicks to Phil The De's contained Ormond in the second quarter and just before half time Phil Kerin broke away from Mark McDonald for the first time . The margin at half time was just a point in favour of De La. That was a sign of things to come . De La Salle moved Karin to full forward, Tony Klarica to centre half forward and Peter Rennie to the pocket . Their game was transformed . MickGreene was marking stronglyaround the ground and the De La small running players took control . especially overhead . Rover Mark Lowe was superb in the third term, as was winger David Harrington Their extra bite on the ball combined with the brilliant running of defender Pat Maher and Peter Ryan gave DLS many more opportunities to score . Greg McHenry made some scintillating forays deep into Ormond's defence and split it wide open . With Peter Rennie firing DLS added 6 goals in the third quarter . Ormond weren't even able to rally in the last term despite the great efforts of centreman Phil Mehrten . He had a great dual with Tim Cooke . Brian Hanrahan helped to keep Ormond to 1 goal in the last term whilst De La Salle added another 5 goals . It was a very disappointing display by last year's premiers . It was an interesting contrast in tactics . Ormond switching the play onto the grandstand attacking flanks . De La Salle, by contrast, using the defensive flank on most occasions, a tactic for which they're renowned . I think that Ormond weren't allowed to play well, that's the best De La Salle have played for some time and they'll be difficult to get over in the Preliminary Final against their opponents either North ;Old Boys or Collegians . I'd be very surprised if De La Salle don't face North Old Boys because I expect Collegians to F_dvance to the Grand Final today . Why do I think Collegians will win? Well, for a start they're a much more settled combination . Let's startwith their defence . They're a really mean lot, and tough . Imagine trying to geta kick against Simon Williams, Stuart Hinchen and Rick Schober . They can also run the ball well from defence, especially with Andrew Wright, Gary I rv ine and Greg Parsons . Collegians centre line is classy - Greg Tregear, Peter Kahn and Andrew In gleton but perhaps could be pressured if North were to line up with a centre line of Bruno Conti, Mauro Borcich and Peter Weir . It's the Lion attack which is really dangerous . Ian Roberts has kicked a lot of goals at full forward , two are flanked by the brilliant Stephen Rickford has had a grand year at centre half forward and theseBaum, Peter Wolff, David Hoyle but enigmatic Ian Herman . Will he produce his best in the finals? Tony and Richard Herman are all capable of kicking goals . and complemented In the following division is Chris Pollock, possibly supported by Grant Newman by two great rovers - Jeff Lemon and Keith Parsons . What about North? Well I've made mention of their centre line, whatever its make up - it shouln well . Conti, Borcich and Weir sounds pretty good to me!
