..-A SECTION We!I, the Collegians bubble well and truly burst when going for their 16tn victory in a row against North Old Boys in last Saturday's second semi-final . Collegians failed by 38 points. It might be easy to label it as a finals fade out by the Lions but that would deny recognition of the fine performance of North Old Boys . Collegians seemed to have much of the play around the ground but had difficulty converting, ie Lions forwards were well held by the North defence . Schoolboy full back David Baker kept IE ng goal kicker Ian Roberts goalless . Paul Considine was a real stumbling block in defence, though e Bickford did some good work . Mick Hediey and Luke Morse formed a so!id back line along with _ er. Along with Roberts, Peter Wolff, Tony Baum and David Hoyle had quiet days . Collegians had to rely on Ian Herman and Keith Parsons for something up forward .

Since the Fosters brothers brewed th e first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war. Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S.A. Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

Australia's favourite beer.

North's forward by contrast provided some trouble for the usually untroubled Collegians defence . Peter Wright (3 goals) marked strongly and was a strong focal point . Mark Malone, Jerome Griffin and Peter Weir provided some physical strength in attack, and made things tough for Ric Schober, Andrew Wright, Simon Williams and Gary Irvine . Other players from whom North got a!ot of drive were centreman Tony Cahill and ruck-rovers Mauro Borcich . And wingman Bruno Conti should have knocked up getting kicks ! North must now be a big chance for the flag but Mark Hannabery is toying with the idea of a practice match this weekend to avoid any complacency setting in . So to the Preliminary final, and last year's finals performance must be haunting the Lions . Coach Bruce Ferguson's toughest job is to overcome any psychological barrier his players might have . In the Preliminary final last year Collegians led comfortably half way through the third quarter only top surrender their lead afteran unbelievable onslaught of goal kicking led by Phil Karin at full forward . So ended 1985 for Collegians ! I don'tthinkthe same thing will happen thisyear, though De La Salle must have a marvellous psychological advantage . Their finals record is superb and players believe they can do almost anything - and they often do! I expect De La Salle will include Mick Deveson and Chris CAmpbell . That will give John Pollard more flexibility . Deveson can play eitherat centre half forward of centre half back depending on where he is most needed . Perhaps at centre half forward so Phil Kerin can play at fu!l forward . Will Collegians attempt to physically bolster their forward line? Would Tim Bennett be considered to give some marking strength or will Bruce Ferguson rely on the forward line which has on most occasions kicked winning scores ? I think much will rely on conditions . It is hard to forecastthe weather a couple of hours ahead letalone a week in advance . But I really believe this match will be decided by conditions . If it is windy I fancy De La Salle but if the conditions are reasonably fine I'd favour Collegians so what I'm really tipping is the weather . Why do I feel this way! I think that De La Salle's defensive game and use of the outer side is tactically something which other sides fail t handle . The De's will attack and defend on that outer side but will not allow the ball to be bottled up in their forward pockets . They'1l keep space in front of goal and try to centre it, usually with success . Collegians frittered away forward opportunities by playing deep into the windy Elsternwick pockets . If it is clam it won't matter so much . Collegians need to get possession of the football . Their game is built on their defence and possession, precision running football down the ground . Their defence is used to pressure, but not so much their centreline on-ball and forward players . If De La Salle can put the Lions under pressure from the start the Lions will find it difficult . Weil I fancv a rather fine dav at Elsternwick so I'll stick with Collegians . They've beaten De La Salle twice, inclUu't" .g in Lh° last- mnnri of home and away matcne!~ .

B SECTIO N In the replay of the first semi-final at Toorak Park, Fawkner had a most impressive 53 point win over Parkside . Fawkner is on a high and will be very difficult opponents for Old Xaverians at the Harry Trott, especially now that both Mark Majerczak and Terry Young are playing . The second semi-final on Sunday at Elsternwick was a very entertaining game with the Old Paradinas beating the Old Xaverians by 7 goals . Old Paradians were particularly impressive . They were fast, strong, determined and very positive, very much in contrast to Old Xaverians who looked tentative . The game was really over in the first quarter when Old Paradians led by 32 points - the Old Xaverianswere nevergoing to be in itafterthat . Parade centreman Paul Fahey destroyed any chance Xavs had with 3 goals in as many minutes in the third quarter and Greg Powick added another 2 . Xavs played well enough in the last term but only because Paradians allowed them . Indeed, the final score I think flattered the Old Xaverians performance on the day . Unless the Old Xaverians can pick themselves up this week, they will bow out of the finals and miss promotion to A Seciton with their sixth loss on end! If Old Xaverians don't become more aggressive at the ball Fawkner will win easily . My tip is Fawkner . Speak to you tonight on 3L0 at 6 .40 p .m . with a review of this match and a preview of the A Section second semi-final .

Again a comment on last week's results . Congratulations to the clubs who've won promotion the hard way via the Preliminary Final, Uni High (E), Elsternwick (C) and Banyule ( B) and to Old Pare d ians who return to A Section after a break of 7 years . For Banyule and Balaclava it will be virgin territory in 1987 whilst Elsternwick are also over the seven year itch of E section and Uni High has bounced back after just one year. Elsternwick and Old Melburnians U .19's are the only 2 clubs so far, to have made it through from the 1st semi final . To North Old Boys I admit I was wrong and well done on reaching the A Section Grand Final . In fact I'm yet to pick an A Section Finals winner, although my B Section record is two out of two . North won as it handled the condition far better, had a winning centre line of Peter Weir, Tony Cahill and Brian Hanlon who bobbed up everywhere and had focal points up forward in Jerome Griffin and Peter Wright . They were stronger at the ball and teamed magnificently . In the B Section replay Fawkner got away from Parkside early and was never in any danger from quarter time on' whilst Old Paradians set up victory with a 9 goal 1st quarter. The O.P's tackled ferociously and had match winning forwards in Powick, Way and Corcoran, not to mention its centreman, the dangerous Fahy who in a purple patch early in the third term kicked 3 goals in as many minutes . Parade's surety and clean ball handling allowed the whole side to play to instructions and they were most impressive indeed .

The $986 A Section Preliminary Final will feature the 1985 combatants De La Salle and Collegians and both clubs again arrived by the same route . The question being levelled directly at Collegians is can they bounce back? After 15 successive victories its semi final loss to North last week has many of the smarties talking of "Colliwobbles" and in fronting up against the competitions undoubted "Finals specialists" De La, Sunday provides Collegians with a golden opportunity to answer its growing critics . Looking at the two sides De La has a definite edge with its on ball players, an area North exploited to perfection last Saturday . Collegians must replace ruckman Pollock with N ewman who is tougher and whose spring may worry the De La colossus Mick Greene . However Greenee is the most valuable and highly respected bigman in the competition and if he is beaten for tapouts and throw ins he will simply bob up across the back or forward lines where his marking will allow the De's to set up many running plays . His support staff of Connolly, Maher and McHenry like their North counterparts are tougher and stronger than the Collegians trio and Lions coach Bruce Ferguson will, in my opinion, need to make greater use of Hoyle, especially at centre bounces . Rover Keith Parsons was one Collegians player who put in all day last week, but his side kick Lemon was missing as was centreman Peter Kahn who will again have his work cut out against the dependable and consistent Tim Cooke . De La will be strengthened by the return of Mick Deveson who I predict shall line up at centre half-forward allowing Phil Kerin to open at the spear head with ter Rennie probably in a pocket . Collegians vice-captain Dick Williams will pick up Kerin, skipper Stuart Hinchen who also struggled last wee, Rennie, leaving schober for Deveson . They'll all be great tussles and the outcome of each will have a big bearing on the game . Andrew Wright will have his hands full with "Smaka" Lowe who is always among the goals and the pace of Gasparini, Klarica and Bria who can all be expected to burst off the half forward line is yet another problem for the Lions coaching bench, who will be looking for another big game from Gary Irvine . Across the centre, a most important lone at Elsternwick Park I have already mentioned that Tim Cooke should hold sway . Collegian's tried Kahn and Ingleton without success last week although the Lions have faith in need to be Peter Kahn to produce the goods on Sunday. Tregear began well last week but faded and .will at his very best to beat David Harrington and either Baum or Lauusen may play on the other However don't be surprised if Richard Herman who along with Tim Bennett is bound to be included in this week's twenty, lines up on the other where his opponent will be on of the De La youngsters T! ay K?irica or Mario Bria, both of who are capable of brilliance and on their first semi efforts, big occasion players . oy ;-ou „ c inn nomPnt t-- had the worst day of .v,ceives grand support his careeclr iast~veek and todav no strikes a verj -mulch , inforrr, Pe="zs

from Greg McHenry who polled so well in the A Section Best and Fairest and the dependable Brian HanraFan . Hanrahan will need to be on his game today as either Bennett or Pollock are likely to line up in the forward pocket to assist Roberts. Collegians would have been pleased with Bicicford's game . He continually fought for front position and did all he could do to rally his forwards . However Baum and Wolff were rarely sighted and he received little support . De La are likely to use Peter Ryan and either Anderson or Campbell at half back and strangely I see this line as Collegians real hope for success . Ian Herman had a reasonable day, although many of his possessions were won from goal and appeared wasted . Weather conditions are bound to play a part in the outcome and you can bet De La will be hoping for a windy and or wet afternoon . They already have a psychological advantage despite a loss in the final home and home round . I don't envy Bruce Ferguson who it is rumoured has sought reasons interstate for his team's loss last week . He has a very good team as was evidenced by their ladder position . Can he get them up this week? Will they rspond to a great football challenge? Have they the mental toughness? Question that will remain unanswered untill 5 p.m . on Sunday and contrary to my Prickly Pear selection on Monday evening I'm going for the "Finals Specialists"DE LA SALLE to progress to the Grand Final . What a great week end of football awaits - Grand Finals plus the A Section Preliminary, and the icing on this football feast is the B section Preliminary where Fawkner, after winning the "elimination final" against the Blacks and the qualifying against Parkside are now only a game out of the "big time" A Section in 1987 . In their present form which is winning form and therefore good form they're playing with great purpose and confidence and will approach this game with a fanatical desire for a successful outcome . Old Xaverians, on the other hand, have now lost 5 games on end . They were quietly confident of upsetting Old Paradians according to coach John Turner who also believes that his younger players and they have a good few with limited or no finals experience, will have benefitted greatly from last week . They were all rightly delighted with Nick Wilton's form and the debut of Luke O'Sullivan . They will be looking for a big improvement from centreman Mark Beattie who will have his hands decidedly full against Stephen Hills and ruck rover/half forward Jim Peters . I also believe they must play Cameron at full forward and Steve Curtain at centre half, where his clash with Shane Rhodes will be a real highlight . The Xavs will need to keep a close watch in Fawkner ruck rovers Tymms and Buckley and rovers - the exciting M aj e k brothers Peter and M ark . Certainly their counterparts the O'Sullivan brothers Luke and Josh will need to pick them up when Fawkner are in attack . Peter Curtain is bound to have the tagging role on the unpredictable yet brilliant Terry Young and Peter Klein may be asked to pick up John O'Leary. M att Grummett will have his hands full with the underrated Terry Price although Paul Curtain is a capable and tough back pocket who will not be bluffed out of any rough stuff . In the ruck Vaughan Summers will need to be at his youthful best if he is to minimize the significant role Harry Busst has of Fawkner's game and whereas the Xazvs will have the aerial advantage Fawkner's running game has been a feature and one that coach Kevin Morrison has worked hard at . It will be a big test for Old Xavs .Can they turn 5 losses into that one vital win? Certainly besides the A Section prize they have the incentive of another crack at Old Paradians . However I'm of the opinion that Fawkner have the sniff of A Section, of righting its image and start to the season and is playing with the confidence, purpose and steadiness that will see it in A Section next year. It's FAWKNER for mine . Looking now at the C Section Grand Final where Banyule who will start as definite underdogs take on the talented Old Trinity . Banyule has done very well to reach the Grand Final from folurth position but must be on guard against being satisfied with promotion alone . "That one day in September" is what the season is all about and I've no doubt coach Joh Simpson will remind his players accordingly. Simpson is a former Ivanhoe layer and La Trobe coach and is to be congratulated on getting the side to the Grand Final especially after Posing the talented duo Doyle and and pro-season and Tony Luby after the first four weeks due to a transfer interstate. His rival Andrew Disney is also to be complimented as the club is well within reach of back to back premierships in D and now C Sections . The game promises to be a beauty with many individual tussles highlighting the match . In the centre two of the best players in the section, Banyule's M arcus Fraumano and Old Trinity's Trevor Norman will match wits and skills. On the wings Banyulee will rely on Tony Short and promising Under 19 captain Brad Quilliam to give them the edge over Trinity's talented Tim Phillips and Dave Rogers . Old Trinity has welcomed the return of full forward Chris Brent who will be more than a handful for either Mick Power or Steven Gray, although whoever misses the job on Brent will have the equally important role of keeping David O'Shaughnessy quiet - a big task indeed . However these two form only part of the 'Trinners' attack and the Banyule defenders will be hard pressed to keep the dangerous Scott Cowley and vastly experienced Peter Yeoman out of the game for long periods . At the other end Banyule will be looking to key forwards Geoff Williams and Wayne Gibson plus skipper Rick Brockwell and creative ruck rover M artin Le--o to kick a winning score . However they weill find goals hard to come by against Andrew Allibon, Craig 2on, who to quote Old Haileybury's Andrew La Jonees "disproves the theory that blokes who wear bicycle helmets can't play football" and Tim Pontefract who will more than likely be asked to pick up the wily Brockwell . To cause an upset Banyule will need to "jump" Old Trinity and have faith in its running game . They've reached the Grand Final through determined and persistent football but despite their enthusiasm and evenness I must go for the high marking, long kicking and more skilfull Old Trinity to take the C Section Flag into B Section next season . 6

RE VIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED SEPTE M BER 6 AND 7 Congratulations to Old Paradians who qualified to return to A Section after seven seasons in B and to Banyule, Balaclava, Elsternwick and University H igh School Old Boys who all earned promotion for 1987 . In the case of Banyule and Balaclava each team has qualified for its highest ever section . D SECTION : Balaclava recovered from its recent form lapse to comfortably defeat Preston and thus qualigy to play Monash Blues again this week. Neither Balaclava nor its parent club A .M .P . Society has played in C Section since joining the V .A.F .A . in 1963 . E SECTIO N : Elsternwick had the better of State Bank but inaccurate kicking limited its winning margin to ten points . For the Bankers, the 1986 finals proved most disappointing while for the Reds and Blacks their 1987 reward will be participation in D Section for the first time since 1979 . F SECTION : University High School Old Boys qualified to return to E Section bydefeating W hitefriars by twenty five points. Whitefriars have had a successful debut season and more success must come their way in future years . For the visitors who are long standing V .A .F .A . members their return to E After this season in F could well be their first step in a return to the higher sections (U .H .S .O .B . have played in A Section) . G SECTIO N : On Sundayat Elsternwick, M onash Whites vindicated myselection by proving too strong for Parkside who trailed all day . The Devils had no encounter for the talented Monash forward Farley who overcame the conditions to kick five goals . JUNIOR 1 : In the first semi-final replay De La Salle accounted for Bulleen Templestowe by sixty six points. The wide margin was unexpected following their drawn game the previous week . By selecting the combine on a hunch and ignoring the statistical evidence of 1986 performances I judged badle, and paid the penalty of making another tipping mistake . JUNIOR 2 : Giant killers Old M elburnians qualified for the Grand Final when they defeated Old H aileybury by four goals . The big mystery to amateur scholars is how Coach Nixon has lifted his side from a seemilngly impossible fourth place to the Grand Final . Did his players find a secret elixir on some faraway snowy slope on August 23 ? JUNIOR 3 : C .B .C. St . Kilda vindicated their season's standing by defeating Ivanhoe by five goals . The stage is now set for the two best sectional performers to meet in today's Grand Final . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GA M E S D SECTION : Monash Blues and Balaclava contest the Premiership at Yarra Park . Balaclava won both rostered games whereas the students won two weeks ago by eight goals . What of today? Can the Monash defenders curb the Balaclava forwards again? Eleven players scored goals in Round 17 whereas the Monash defenders allowed only six goal kickers in the second semi . Conversely can Balaclava defenders stop the Monash forwards, ten of whom scored goals in the semi-final compared with nine scorerson August 16 . These statistics point towards another Monash victory . Additionallythe week's rest should prove beneficial to Monash who are my selection . E SECTION : Unbeaten Bulleen United play Eisternwick at Monash University, eager to maintain their enviable record . Their preliminary final on this ground will serve as an assetto Elsternwick who will give a determined performance . Their determination could prove troublesome if the Bulleen players relax or become complacent . In the annals of Amateur Football there are many examples of unbeaten sides coming to grief in a Grand Final, however I am not prepared to forecast Elsternwick's fifth Premiership (1920, 1925 A, 1939 B, 1951 D, according to my records) . Bulleen United will win its second pennant (1982 F being the first) . F SECTION : The season's leading sides Old Essendon Grammarians and University High School Old Boys contest the Premiership on the Garvey Oval, B undoora, where each side will take time to adjust to

the different bounce of the ball on the most northerly ground in the competition . The Old Essendon forwards must do better than they did two weeks ago, or their side could again lower its colours to University High School whose forwards have been the more active over the season . The week's rest should have revitalized Old Essendon who are my selection . G SECTION : The season's two leading sides Old Carey and M onash W hites meet for the pennant on Oval 15 . Their second semi-final meeting was a very low scoring match and I cannot believe the students will be restricted to one goal again today. Farley and Ellery, two sure Monash avenues to goal, were among the side's best players last Sunday while Hearn for Old Careywas his side's best forward in the semi, in a preformance which vindicated his lead in the sectional tally . Carey captain McMahon again proved a valuable player in the semi and his ability to bring his more mobile players into the game should prove a vital factor in determining the result of the game . All factors point to the second Old Carey Premiership, as their only previous pennant was in E Section in 1961 . JUNIOR 1 : In the preliminary final de La Salle and ; . . : i' ourne High School Old Boys play on the Ross Gregory Oval for the right to play Ormond next Saturday for the J .S . McCann Cup . Over the season the two sides have been very evenly matched - only one point difference in against scores - De La Salle's extra game probably will be an asset to match fitness although the week's rest will have enabled all the High School players to recover from minor injuries and to be fully fitfortoday. I was wrong in my judgement of De La Salle ability last week so I will tip them today and hope my selection will prove to be factual . JUNIOR 2 : The unlikely matchings of Collegians and Old Melburnians for the H . Coldrey Cup appears on paper to indicate a Collegian's victory . Over the season the Purple and Golds have been the far strongerside butthe Old Melburnians by their outstanding final's performances have shown home and away form is not always a good finals guide . Premierships have been won from fourth place and although the task facing Old Melburnians is not impossible, common sense leads me to select Collegians . JUNIOR 3 : Old Paradians and C .B .C . St. Kilda fully deserve the honour of playing off for the M .G . Russel Cup . The Paradian's only loss was to St . Kilda by nineteen points in Round 3, while St. Kilda's only losses have been to Parade by seventy-seven points on July 12 and by one point in the second semi-final . Problems facing Paradian Coach Mick Doherty include the lack of hard match practice for his players who have only one game in the past four weeks and the tendency of the Paradians to start slowly (they trailed St . Kilda by five goals at quarter time in the semi-final) . The Paradians however should be able to generate sufficient opportunities to win via their centre line players, Beck, Naim and Pritchard as well as the mobile Peyton and Regan . Elusive forwards Abrahams and Kerr should be able to convert sufficient scoring opportunities to win the game . For the Saints Mann will be a good forward, while Jackson and Fraseralways playwell . The suspended Fitzroywill prove a big lossto St . Kilda who I believe will be unable to withstand the Paradian pressure which will bring the third ever U .19 pennant the Old Paradian club (1968 and 1980 were the others in Junior Section 2) .

BALL BRIEFS U.H .S . THANKS ANDY Over the past eight years Univ High has been fortunate in having the skilled services of trainer Any Mc Millan to tend the injuries of players . Despite several physical setbacks to his "nobby" knees Andy has continued on with his high standard of treatment and concern . The Committee estimates that Andy has served the club in over 250 games - a wonderful effort . Andy's support off the field is well known . Always present at sociall functions Andy can usually be found helping out where needed . Andy's latest go is the Webber "pig and beef" night which was a great financial success . As mentioned Andy's health has not been the best over the IFSt few years and as a result has needed assistance to get the injured off the field because he is under doctor's orders not to do any running . Such is the man's dedication that he refuses too let this or his fine set of knees interfere with his duties . Congratulations Andy you are a fine example to the rest of the club . We would be truly lost without you and we hope that you will be back in 1987 . The Committee and past/future injured players at U.H .S.

250 TO STATE BANK STALWAR T What better honour could a player have than to play his 250th game in a Grand Final and hopefully celebrate this milestone with a premiership . No player at the State Bank deserves this honour more than Mike Scott . Mike began his association with the club in the early 70's and, although he has "retired" a few times, has served the club with distinction . Mike's playing career has consisted mainly of early starts but, over the last couple of years he has used his guile and experience successfully in the later game . Off field Mike has been a gem . He has organised just about everything there has been to organize and his ability to introduce new ideas is amazing . Of course Mike's work is not done single-handed . For most of his time at the Club Mike has had his lovely wife Christine at his side and in the last few years young Mark . Mike has won many awards at the club including numerous leasing goalkicker in the reserves and two Best Clubman, however, as the true champion he is, Mike would gladly give these all up for a win today . I know for Spike's sake every player will give their all today . Well done Spike . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER, 1986

with Brian Goodman LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE UMPIRE S The seasons come and go and I guess not too many people give very much thought to the umpires . Let me tell you about them, I know, I train them . As the training demands on players increases to keep up with the present style of the game, the same demand is placed on the umpires . Each Tuesday and Thursday night you will find them training at Elsternwick Park and usuallyon other nights, a run by themselves . The mostd ifficult umpirers positinsarecertainly thoseoftheAdvisorNeville Nash and hisassistant, Graham Simpson . Both do an excellentjob and I have enjoyed the season working with them . Also of great help on the training track was Graham Cavanagh, a former amateur umpire whose assitance I gretly appreciated . As the season draws quickly to a close, I congratu lateall those umpireswho have achieved that they set themselves prior to the season as much as I congratulate the umpires who have achieved the ultimate for the season, and that is to umpire in the Grand Final . Should you think of retiring from football for varous reasons and would still like to be involved in the game, don't mind a bit of hard training, meet a great bunch of guys, enjoy some times . . . BIG MIKE'S 25 0 The umpiring fraternity congratulates goal umpire Mike Murray, who officiates in his 250th match this weekend . It will also mark his 44th F *Io al's appearance . Highlights during his 13 year career with the Association include the 1983 'A' Section Grand Final, the '77, '84 and ' 85'B' Section grand Finals ; V .A .F .A . v V.C .F .L. (1984) ; V .A .F.A . v V .F.A . (1985) and V.A .F.A . v S .A . and W .A . ( 1985) . The genial, big man was also V .A .F .A.U .A . President in 1985 . Mike's personal records reveal that he has worked with 92 field umpires, 74 goal umpires, officiated at 45 grounds and seen 65 teams in action . During this time, too, he has been party to 6489 goal and 6171 behinds decisions . No wonder he has long arms ! Mike aims to continue working between the sticks for some time yet and hopes to pass on his experience to our young band of umpires, new to the goal umpiring ranks. WHAT THE COACHES SAID A SECTIO N MARK HANNABERY ( NORTH O.B. ) It was not an easy win although conditions helped a bit . I've no preference for the Grand Final and will be trying to set up a practice match for next weekend . We got out of the game with no real injury worries and as far as best players go it was a good team effort " BRUCE FERGUSION (COLLEGIANS) "it was a very ordinary performance indeed . Our forwards were too short, too slow and didn't think about the game. Five goals from an A Section team is just hopeless . Also our on ball players were never in it . I don't blame the conditions and I've got no excuses . We've got no injuries and will need to get more from our centre line. I thought our backs did all right in holding North to 11 goals. GRAND FINAL 50's AT OLD TRINITY Players and Supporters at Old Trinity wish to extend congratulations to the following players who have reached their 50th game milestone in 1986 , Chris Wallace - 50 games today. Chris Glass - 50 games Second Semi Final . Steve Stoddard - 50 1/4games Round 14. Ian Wallace will notch up his 50th game in today's Grand Final . "Wal" has been a fine contributor throughout the year and has been a key contributor in the teams rise from D Grade. Holding down either the full back of centre half back positions Wal is always a very reliable defender taking the sure grabs and clearing kicks with cool efficiency . On the social front `Wal' is well known for his Swan Lake type dancing prowess in the song and dance troupe called "The Village Idiots' ; at the Talent Night . Keep up the great work and congratulations again from at 0'T's . Chris Glass also notched up his 50th game against Thomastown in the Second Semi Final two weeks ago. A consistent performer in the Seniors since his arrival Chris has shown his worth as a key motivator and inspiring team member. Always the coach's first choice in the side, even before his impressive display in the "1986 Miss Trinity Contest" "Crssta9s" or

B SECTIO N GERARD SHOLLY (OLD PARADIANS) "I must say I didn't expect to be 11 or 12 goals up at 3/4 time in a final . You plan and exhort the team to play a certain way - a certain style and more often than not you don't expect them to do it . However today they did . We worked really hard and persisted all day . We didn't deviate from what we had decided and our method didn't change. Next week ? Well train Saturday and then go off and watch the Under 19s win the first of three flags for the Club! " JOHN TURNER (OLD XAVERIANS ) "Nothing went right . It was very disappointing and we were beaten by a far better side who went in harder for the ball . It was a personall disgrace to a lot of our players and we've now got our work cut out for us next week "

Chris's hunger for the hard ball is always evident . Well done again Chris and best of luck today!!! Steve Stoddart - 50 Games . Past but not forgotten congratulations go to Steve Stoddart for his 50 games played during the year . A determined player in the Clubs Reservers XVIII Steve has been a supporter and player since the park days of E Grade. Often hampered by hand injuries this year being no exception Steve is an example of perseverance and it is fitting that his write-up appears in the Grand Final Edition of the Record . Well done Steve hoping your nest 50 take half the time.

Many Amateur football followers will be saddened by i ; ,e news of the death of M rs . "Hilly" . .-jn . Hilly was a great stalwart of Old Melburnians a Old Haileybu ry and was a great attender of Carnival and Interstate Matches .

Personality Pars TWO MORE MILESTONES AT BALACLAVA Congratulations to two great clubmen in Gary Oaten & B rendan Angwin . "Oatsy" is in his third year at the club and has played many fines games over that period of time, culminating in his 50th game played against Old Mentone in the "D" Grade Reserves Preliminary Final . "Oatsy" played a fine game last week, and pulled in a couple of strong marks when the team needed a lift . Gary won the reserves best and fai re st last season, and he has been a big contributors over the last couple of seasons on the field . Off the field, Gary has shown himself to be a great clubman, working on social committees and making sure he is at all club functions. Gary has a dry sense of humour, which he sometimes takes onto the training track. A social drinker only, Gary is a fitness fanatic, and likes nothing better than a session of repetitive 400 metres runs included in a training session . A talented ruckman/forward, Gary is generally a strong mark and a very accurate kick for goal . Well done on all your past contributionsd to the club Gary, we hope to see you around for a while yet . B re ndan "Snorka" Angwin played his 150th game against Preston MBOB last week and a very strong game he played too. "Snorka" has been around the Club for a few years now, and he has shown himself to be inspirational on and off the field . B rendan always gives 110% in a game, and many times in the past he has had to carry out the ruckman's role against much taller, heavier opponents . Courage has always been a trademark, and Snorka likes it best when the going gets tough . Bre ndan's on field leadership has

been recognised in past years with him being named senior deputy vice-captain, a position he held in the 1984 Grand Final side. Brendan played a big part in the win last week which saw the club elevated for the first time in its history to C Grade, Off the field, B re ndan is well respected for his quick wit and his ability to recount some great stories from his youth . Brendan has worked on many committees in the past, his contribtuions to the club have been many and varied, and his great sense of humour has been appreciated by many for a few years now. Congratulations on your past achievements "Huddo" and we hope to be holding our breath as you line up for a few more goals yet!!
