br a ~,, ~uu .ii Since the Fosters brothers brewed the first distinctive Australian lager in 1888 the fame of Australia's favourite beer has grown around Australia and around the world. Foster's was first exported to South Africa during the Boer war . Today you can get a Foster's from Baghdad to Bangkok, San Francisco to Singapore . It's by far the biggest selling Australian beer in Britain . One of the top 10 selling imports in the U.S .A . Sold in every Australian state, Foster's outsells every other Australian brand of beer .

A SECTIO N Collegians overcame an important phychological barrier with their 33 point win over De La Salle in last Sunday's Preliminary Final . But it wasn't al! plain sailing! After 2 early goals to De La Salle the Lions quickly settled down and we saw the best quarter of the day with Collegians playing strong, quick and positive football and they led by 32 points at quarter time after a 7 goal quarter . This was followed up by a goalless second term as De La Salle crawled their way back into the match . Phil Kerin,, despite injuring his knee in the first few minutes was still a handful for Simon Williams. Into the breeze in the third term De La Salle showed great courage to twice get within a point through the skill of Peter Pennie . But late in the team Tony Baum came on and Stuart Hinchen went onto the ball and gave the Lions the lift they needed . Keith Parsons kicked a couple and a professional 'push' by Richard Hernian gave Collegians the break they had wanted 21 points in fact . One could sense a mild form of relief at the Lion camp relief that DLS had not hit the front in the 3rd quarter, indeed had not run over them as they had the year before ! In the final analysis Collegians had enough . The word died and so too did De La Salle . They were gallant but injuries firstly to Phil Karin and then to Tim Cooke and a less than 100% Mick Deverson made their task well nigh impossible . Mick Greene played his heart out for De La Salle, his goal on the siren testimony to his 'never say die' attitude . But again it was Collegians defence . None was more courageous than back pocket Andrew Wright he broke his jaw in the first quarter but finished the game as one of their best players . Gary Irvine was under notice through Peter Pennie did manage four goals . I thought Rick Schoker and Stuart Hinchen were dynamic defenders and Richard Hermain was a very wise inclusion in attack . And so to the Grand Final! Nort h will be cockahoop and rightly so . Theirs was a very well orchestrated win in the second semifinal . North would probably start favourites but Collegians the popular underdogs on account of their impressive form•over the last two years . But North Old Boys run into the finals has been equally impressive and it is clesrly no coincidence that they have beaten Collegians twice now this season . I remember too last season the Lions being knoched off at Brens Oval by North ! If Collegians are to win they will have to be much more aggressive at the ball than the last time they meet particularly their on ball players and forward line . Richard Herman will make a big difference but David Baker is no slouch . Chris Pollock to the forward line is a wise move to give a little bit more off hands' . The Lions will need to cover the injured Andrew Wright. Steve Laussen could be the logical replacement for him . I wonder if young Comron from the Under 19's will be risked ? North have potential match winners in ruckman/forward Peter Wright. He looked like he was about to jump out of his skin last time . Bruno Conti is a class player whether on the wing or in defence and somehow Collegians would want to try and nullify the influence of CHB Paul Considine . He is such a great trier and a wonderful initiator of forward move . I really don't feel confident about this one . It will surely be closer than the semifinal . Peter French hasn't picked an A Section winner so his selection is much more crucial than mine . Collegians have improved from last time but I doubt if they have enough confidence in themselves in the tight situations . North Old Boys will not be lacking in this department North Old Boys for 1986 .
B SECTIO N Old Xaverians back from the dead with a 26 point win in the Preliminary Final . After losing their previous five games it might have been expected that they would fold when Fawkner applied the pressure . The heat was applied in the third quarter but quite amazing inaccuracy in front of goal prevented Fawkner from converting the ascendency they had on the field to the scoreboard . Old Xaverians rallied and two goals to Steve Curtain midway through the quarter sealed it . Dough Atkinson at half back found new legs, Peter Curtain defended strongly, Cameron O'Brien found some form and ' Ralph' O'Shanghnessy was creative in attack . Nick Wilton's leg was heavily strapped last week he would be unlikely to play but Jim Peters might be back . Whatever the team's makeup I still think Old Paradians will be too skilled and too physically strong . Old Paradians . I'll have a review of the B Section Grand Final and preview of the A Section Grand Final on 3LO at about 6 .40 on Saturday . Finally, thank you to all clubs for their first class cooperation in providing information throughout the year . Have a restful summer and enjoy today .
Peter French Previews the Weekend s Grand Final s
To follow the pattern of the last few weeks, congratulations to the Premier Teams : Banyule, Balaclava, Bulleen United, Old Essendon and Old Carey in the Seniors, Old Melburnians and Old Paradians in the Under 19's and Banyule, Preston, Brunswick and Old Essendon in the Reserves . Special mention of Bulleen United`s Championship Season is warranted as was the performance of Banyule and Old Essendon in winning both the Seniors and Reserves flags . Also to Old Carey on winning the inaugural G Section Pennan t And now to the A Section Grand Final, where given my record to date of none out of three, I'm sure to have some No rth and Collegians fans hoping I select the other . Readers will note from the centre page the likely or probable line up of both sides . Collegians is more likely to be correct as we've had consecutive weeks to study it whilst No rt h's is based on the second-semi, and Mark Hannabery is likely to make the odd change . He is fortunate to have a number of players in Egan, Brown, Considine, Conti, Griffin and Cahill capable of playing in a variety of positions and in a variety of roles . Bruce Ferguson is similarly blessed and I'm sure that skipper, Stuart Hinchen, may well find himself on the ball or in the pivot should his robust style and strength be required . Other 'Lions' with equal versatility are Gary Irvine, David Hoyle and Tony Baum . One must ask what will Collegians have learnt from the second-semi? One thing is that at centre bounces they must have more strength and Newman in lieu of Pollock and possibly Hinchen will certainly provide it. Winning the ball out of the centre is vital and at Elsternwick Park especially so . Newman has a huge task in combating Wright and Considine and for the Lions to be a chance they will need a very big performance from Chris Pollock both on the ball and up forward . Collegians may have the call around the packs as Geoff Lemon showed glimpses last week of the form of which he is capable whilst 'Nipper' Parsons has been one of the Lions more consistent players in the finals series . However both rovers do not win enough possessions in defence and I should like to see them kicking more goals as I'm sure all Collegians supporters would . Their opposite numbers Brian Hanlon and David Edwards who spends more time on the forward line than most rovers are more interchangeable . Hanlon, for instance, is more of a ruck rover where his ample skills with hand and foot create many scoring opportunities . In many ways I believe he is in the same mould as Ian Herman and on the second semi showing does more with the ball than his Collegians counterpart . Nort h's defence was quite superb a fortnight back . Its last line of defence was the original "rock of GIBRALTAR" whilst its half back line rebounded the ball with precision despite the fact that Bickford more than held his own with Considine . Today it might be a bit different . The inclusion of youngster Richard Herman lifted the Lions last week and his 5 goals were the product of clever and intelligent
play . Who will ever forget that outrageous push in the back he gave Brian Waldron during that crucial third quarter! His clash today with No rth'sa schoolboy full back David Baker will be a real highlight . Morse is tough and sound enough to hold the Lion's rovers and although Hadley may have his hands full with Pollock, Collegians will no doubt persevere with Ian Herman and David Hoyle changing on one flank and probably Baum in place of Roberts on the other . Conti is likely to pick up the changing ruck rovers and Paul Considine, and enigmatic character on the football field, will form the keystone to the defence where his strength and marking power should give him the call over Stephen Bickford . No rth controlled the centre and centre-line in the semi-final due to Cahill's brilliance and the reliable support from Weir, Hanlon at times and Walters. The Lions will need a form reversal from Kahn, perhaps the role of a tagger on Cahill may lift him, and certainly they need more discipline and consistency from both Tregear and Angleton . It's a line Collegians need to improve and both Ross Booth and I believe that Hinchen will spend some part of the day in the centre of Elsternwick Park . North's half forward line was in great touch in the semi final . Malone, Griffin and Brown led their opponents a merry dance and when one considers that Collegians half back line read Greg Parsons, Schober and Hinchen . their was quite a performance . However I expect it will be an entirely different stroy today . Schober was magnificent against De La and has had a fine season . he will outmark either Griffin or Malone, but is not as "streetwise" as the North skipper who is a hard man to keep down for the full game . Greg Parsons should pick up Malone and either Hinchen or Irvine, Brown for North to win its half forward line must at least break even, as Peter Wright is playing confidently at full forward whilst his logical opponent Simon Williams is not . As Laussen is capable of holding Butera North will need its rucks, rovers and centre line to move the ball quickly and thus giving Wright a chance to be one out on Williams . In going for Collegians I do so after viewing therir performance against De La last week and their efforts during the season which saw them quite clearly as the team to beat for the 1986 Premiership . They tackled hard against De La and were ablt to keep the pressure on in the way North did the previous week . The inclusion of Richard Herman has added sparkle to the forward line and after a 25 year wait 1986 is the year of the LION . In B Section Old Paradians has earnt the right to start favourites, despite Old Xaverians return to the winning list last week . Parade will welcome back ruckman John Atta and vice-captain Peter Wood who will add even more strength to a wonderful back line . Good news for the Xavs was the return to form of Cameron O'Brien and the consistent play of Steven Curtain whose strong marking and accurate kicking helped put the ,Red and Blacks back in A Section . Xavs will need a big game from Mac Grummett who will be pitted against the exciting O .P.'s schoolboy forward David Way. In Addition Atkinson or Klein will need to play close to both Powick and Corcoran who are very dangerous forwards . Xavs will have a show if they can hold these players and two more they should not overlook are Paul Fahy and Michael Skerrett. Xav's skipper Peter Cu rt ain is more than capable but I've doubts about either newcomer Low and or Pearson . Xavs look good across the centre, especially on the wings but Paul Considine or Fahy will be too good and experienced and strong for Beattie, although the Xavier man will relish the opportunity to answer his semi-final critics . Parade's strength lies in its great defence where Nelson, Matt Considine, McCann, Wood and Pritchard will be too determined for the Old Xavs . forwards, although Steve Cu rt ain and O'Brien are bound to make their presence felt . Luke O'Sullivan has made an impressive debut and is bound to kick 3 or 4 goals, however he must also win the ball in defence and increase his possessions to be a real thorn in Gerard Sholly's plans . In addition to an excellent defence the Old Paradian's rucks and runners Atta and Grills, plus Spillane, Gleeson and Roe are decidedly more formidable than Summers, O'Shaughnessy and the O'Sullivan brothers, although I must compliment "Ralph" O'Shaughnessy on his semi-final performance where he sut a very good player in Spillane right out of the game . Dominic will be bursting at the seams to re-dress the position this week and Old Paradians supporters will be looking to the All Australian skipper for a big performance . I must stick with Old Paradians . They have had their share of disappointment in recent years and the flag today will be great reward for the persistence and commitment the club, its players and officials have all shown . There will be some too who will be happy to see Gerard Sholly turn the tables on his former Club and teammates . Gerard was a member of the Old Xavs last B Section Premiership team and coached the side in 1983 and 1984 . It certainly promises to be a great game and despite being told that "I've no hope of playing" I just wonder whether Nick Wilton will make a miraculous recovery . Certainly his on field presence would be a huge boost to Old Xaverians . To conclude my final preview for 1986 a word of thanks to fellow contributors Ross Booth and Norm Nugent. Also to the Club Press-Correspondents and George McTaggart, Nuggett Stephens, Sue Anderson and Mavis Saslow who were of great assistance during a wonderful season of Amateur Football . REVIEW OF GAMES PLAYED 13 .9 .8 3 . D SECTION : Balaclava won the pennant by defeating Monash Blues by fourteen points . This result reversed that of the second semifinal . Congratulations to both sides for their 1986 season's effort and all the best for C Section in 1987 . E SECTION : Bulleen United earned the champion's title by easily accounting for Elsternwick by one hundred points. This game resulted in the rounds largest winning margin . F SECTION : At Bundoora on a heavy Garvey Oval Old Essendon Grammarians proved their superiority over University High School Old Boys wqhen they won the pennant by a twenty six point margin . With only one loss (to University High School July 26th) . Old Essendon have clearly been the strongest side in F Section . Their double pennant provides tangible evidence of this fact . G SECTION : Old Carey won the inaugural premiership with a twenty point victory over Monash Whites . This was Carey's fifth victory over the students during the 1986 season . All Amateur Football followers hope that with the impetus both clubs have gained during 1986 that they will return to higher sections in the years' ahead .

JUNIOR 1 : Melbourne High School Old Boys defeated De La Salle by fourteen points in the preliminary final to earn another opportunity to challenge Ormond in today's Grand Final . De La Salle found their extra final's game a hindrance as the Melbourne High School players had rested 'last week while awaiting their preliminary final opponent to qualify. JUNIOR 2 : The final chapter in the season's greatest major round upset was written when Old Melbournians who were lucky to qualify for the finals overwhelmed Collegians (who lost two other matches during 1986) by seventy nine points . Not even the Melburnian's hierarchy and most optimistic supporters could have believed four weeks ago that their side would win the premiership . Almost all Amateur Football followers would have shared my August 30th belief the side would finish fourth . JUNIOR 3 : Congratulations to the Old Paradians who convincingl ;y defeated C.B .C . St Kilda to take the M .G . Russel Cup after a hard fought game . Paradians stamped themselves as the best side in the section by their depth of talent which showed art under Grand Final pressure . With early prime mover Owen Abrahams off the ground Kerr and the groggy Toohey lifted their side with inspirational play .

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GRAND FINAL JUNIOR 1 Ormond and Melbourne High School Old Boys play for the J .S . McCann Cup which Ormond have won four times while Melbourne High School Old Boys have yet to win this coveted Cup . Ormond has won the three previous encounters this season by eleven points at Forest Hill on May 24 ; by fifty nine points at Ormond on August 2 and by twenty points in the second semifinal . Despite this prior advantage all participants will be conscious that each game is different and that Elsternwick Park with its wide wings and vagaries of wind will introduce factors unknown previously to both sides . A highlight of the game will be the performance of the two full forwards Johnson of Ormond needs six goals for his century while Drummond of Melbourne High with nine goals last week now has 104 for the season . A concern for Ormond will be its lack of recent match practice one game in three weeks, which may have taken away players' peak forms . Nevertheless taking the season's form into account Ormond has the better record of games won and of lower opposition scores . Melbourne High aided, no doubt, by its smaller home ground scored an extra six points over eighteen home and away rounds . Selection by means of seasonal performances did not prove accurate in Section 2 but I am prepared to stay with this tired and true method and so select Ormond . For the A and B section winners this weekend Collegians and Old Paradians are my selections . To all my avid readers I now sign off for the next twenty eight weeks . See you all in 1987 .

DE LA SALLE OLD COLLEGIANS (Blue and Gold, Gold M onogram )
5 YEARS AGO 198 1 In an unequalled form reversal, Old Xaverians avenged their second semi 96 point defeat by North Old Boys when they controlled the 'A' Section grand final throughout to win by 18 points, 15 .21 to 13 .15 . Nick Burne continued his great form at full forward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 and was a great performer aropund the ground . The best player on the ground was Old Xaverians captain John Noonan, who rucked strongly all day . A tightknit Old Xaverians defence shut out North's semifinal star, Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old Xaverians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody . Old Xaverians joined the select band of clubs which had won B & A Section premierships in successive years . Old Xaverian's only other apperance in an 'A' section Grand Final was in 1964 when it was beaten by Old Paradians . Best players for North Old Boys were Burgin, Considine, S . Weir, O'Rourke, Borcich and S . Hibbert. University Blues made their stay in 'B' section worthwhile when the outclassed Collegians 18 . 12 to 11 .14, . Stars for Blues were 7'yquin, Fry, Yeo, Cortese, O'Brien, Bedford, Sleeman, (4 gls) and for Collegians, Wagstaff, Cook, R . Loder T . Loder, Etherington, Rice . BulleenTemplestowe took out grand final when they defeated Old Scotch 17 .13 to 14 .15 . LOOKING BACK 25 YEARS AGO 196 1 Old flnelburnians and Collegians met in'A'section Grand Final with victory going to the Purple and Gold . Team lists as below included some well known names, 5 players (3 O .M . and 2 Collegians) went on to play League fotball, one of whom was R . W . Oakley. In the South Reserve Section two teams, great rivals of the 70's and 80's met ; the names of J .F.X.Dillon and A .O'Callaghan appear familiar . While in the Juniors, M .H .S .U .B . defeated Ormond to win the second of four successive premierships . One familiar name is S .Waites (MHSUB) later to become player, umpire and at times advocate for Parkside A .F .C . The team lists are printed below_ Top goalkickers were ' A' R . LOOKING BACK 1956 30 YEARS AG O A memorable year with the Olymic Games in Melbourne, and an exhibition match held on the final day between V .A .F.A. and a team of amateur players from V .F.L. & V.F .A . The successful V .A .F.A. team comprised R . Collins (MHSOB)G . Gill (U . Blacks), P . Harkness (O .Scotch), L . Wakeling (0 . Parad .), A . Capes (U . Blacks), P . Rochow (Coburg), C . Empey (C'wealth Bank), R . Tindale (0 . Scotch), M . Keogh (U . Blues), L . Williams (Ivanhoe), L. Grant (Power House), J .D . Anderson (0 . Melb .) R . FentonSmith (Ormond), J . Hayes (U . Blues), I .J . Merrick (Coburg), Bryce Thomas (0 . Melb .) R . Pettigrove (Coburg ),G . Hibbiuns(CoII .), Murray Mitchell (0 . Melb .A), Jim Hannan (0 . Melb .) . Joe Kelly was coach, Les Wenker was umpire, boundry umpires Jack Wilson and Bill Quinn, and goal umpiresOssie Meehan and BobColdrey . Alf Perrin was team manager . Old established team Balwn left the Association . Best and fairest for the season : ' A' John Hayes (U . Blues), ' B' Peter Falconer (Geel .), 'C' D . Hoffman (E .S . & A.), ' D' B . Mckenna (St . Pats O .C .) and'E'A .C . Dick (National Bank) . George McTagga rt received his"Award of Merit" from the Australian National Football council for long and valued service in interest of game . Ivanhoe, after losing the final to Coburg by one point, excerised their right of challenge and "what the game may have lacked in system it certainly more than made up for in excitement as at no time was there more than a difference of 6 points in the scores" . At the final siren, Ivanhoe was 2 points in front with John Manvell of Ivanhoe marking before the siren and kicking truly to give'Hoes victory by 8 points' . (Present dayexecutive member,John Miles, wasa member of the team . N .R .) . It was Ivanhoe's first 'A' Section premiership . Colle g ians won ' B', South Melbourne City 'C', and Old Geelong Grammarians defeated U .H .S .O .B ., De La Salle O .C . and U .H .S .O .B . quite comfortably to take out the 'D' section premiership . (Modesty forbids the author from describing the game other than to state that he played in centre forO .G.G . N .R .) . Ormond easily won Junior premiership, defeatinq Old snnâ–ş ~" LOOKING BACK 50 YEARS AGO 1936 Finals time and controversy was there even i n those years long ago. At the delegates' meeting the Parkdale deegate alleged the Malvern, the side the finished on top in 'C' section after homeand homegameshad "rung in"ad isqualified junior league player . If the allegation turned out to be true, Parkdale would go to the "top" of the ladder, Old Xaverians into the four, and Malvern out of the four . Parkdale's allegation was that one of its players recognised a man playing for Malvern as a member of the West Park side in the Junior League who had been disqualified bythe tribunal of that body when he did not appear to answer a charge of unseemly conduct . The complaint
was referred to the executive committee with power to act after deciding the matter . The finding was that "while the player would have been entitled to play with the club if he had disclosed all facts, he had not done so . Accordingly, the club was exonerated from all blame but the player had his permit withdrawn" . CENTURY TO THE KIN G Last Saturday Colin King umpired his 100th match in the C Section Grand Final . Until last week Colins highlights were the 1983 drawn F Section Grand Final and 1986 B section 2nd SemiFinal . Colin, who throughly deserved his appointment is one of the young umpires brigade of the future, who trains hard, listens to his peers and above all enjoys his umpiring to the fullest . Colin, after umpiring 100 games with the Dandenong Juniors, stArted with the V.A .F .A.U .A . in 1982, and to his credit, in such a short time, has umpired seven Grand Finals, the D, E, and F, seniors, Under 19 Zone 1, 2 A Reserves and 1 F Reserves . Neville,s greatestinfluence ishisenthusiasmforall umpires (young and experienced) to be successful . To our stalwart assistant Graeme Simpson, who has teamed with Neville so well and contributed so much to younger umpires coming up through the ranks . ( Graeme achieved a merit award earlier this year for his work and service to Amateur Football) . Goal umpires advisor Julian Velleman, has made such a big difference, not only in bringing the goal umpires closer together, but also a more professional and uniform method to goal umpires, for which all field umpires appreciate . Pat Bowd who, along with his assistant, Graham Cavanagh has trained the umpires into finals fitness form . The umpire committee of Ken Jorgensen, Roy Johnson, Peter King and Graham Cavanagh who have a real thankless job and help make Neville and Graemes job a little easier. To all these menwho give up so much of their time, we say a very big thank you and hope very sincerely you will return in 1987 and continue to upgrade and improve umpiring in the V .A .F .A . Brian (Benny) Goodman . YOUNG GLENS 50 Congratulations to Glenn Clarke who will boundry umaire his 50th match today . SAID
JOHN POLLARD ( DE LA SALLE ) "We were beaten by a better side. We made one or two bad errors in which they capitalised, but the Club can be proud of its effort especially Mick Greene who was outstanding . Next Week ? Well Collegians were the best side during the season . However with finals its on the day that counts, but if pushed for a selection - Collegians! "
12
BRUCE FERGUSON - Collegian s "Well we played a bit better last week and we learned a lot from North the week before. We were sitting up there to be shot at and to a lesser extent of course North now finds itself in a similar position . We're now more aware of their strengths and we're looking forward to the game.
MARK HANNABERY (NORTH O.B . ) "I'm never confident of success but hopefully things will work out, if they stick to the game plan . Victory depends on the players on the day and whether I can get them in the right frame of mind . The best side on the day will win".
GERARD SHOLLY ( OLD PARADIANS ) "What happened a fortnight ago doesn't mean a thing . Old Xaverians will be far more confident after their win and they'll play better than last time . There's more pressure in Preliminary Finals than Grand Finals for if you lose the seasons over so Xavs will be far better for the win . We finished on top, won the second semi and if we didn't go on with it the whole season turns sour".
-JOHN TURNER ( OLD XAVERIANS ) "At best we've a chance. We showed improvement last week and I believe Old Xavs react best with their backs to the wall . To discuss Premierships is not our way but we'll be there and be competitive" .

Yet another member of the 1979 Wesley College premiership side . 'Wolfy' 1st played for Collegians in 1980 . Quickly displaying his, will o' wisp' ability nesr goals he proved a valuable member of the senior XV111 . However while possibly one of the best goal sneaks at Collegians 'Wolfy's' progress has been hampered by his skiing ability having incurred a broken leg and a broken thumb as a result of sking trips . In the past two seasons'Wolfy' has avoided sking mishaps and has consequently enjoyed his best years of football . After 6 years at Collegians `1Nolfy' has been nothing but a ornament to the club, his enthusiasm encouraging, his goals murcurial . Well done `Wolfy' we look forward to more fine games in the future .
