From all of us Ross congratulations on the appointment and good luck for the season . Richard Furphy & Ed Banks, are all set to take on the '`big improvers" tag . Although starting favourites Blues will need to work hard to beat Marcellin who expect big things from their successful Under-19s of last season and whose practice match form and depth is most encouraging . I believe this game will be the most entertaining and closest of the round and I lean to the Blues whose home ground advantage may be just the difference . SECTION 1 Two of last season's middle of the section sides Collegians & De La Salle meet on Oval 12 . I was impressed by De La skills in a practice match and select them to win after a close contest , University Blues buoyant after successful recruiting coups and fine form in the pre-season period play Marcellin who probably will not prove as strong as they were in 1986 . At home I select the Blues to take the points . Melbourne High School Old Boys who struggled last season welcome Old Paradians Green to Fores t Hill . The Paradians have enthusiastically welcomed 1986 Premiership Coach Mike Dohe rty back to their helm . The Paradians still have the nucleus of last year's successul side and expect much more from John Tobin, Paul Healy ( "Norm" No rt hey. After a hard fought contest I expect Paradians to emerge with the four points. Therry will unfurl their 1987 pennant before they play Bulleen Templestowe . Bulleen Templestowe may not be as strong as their 1987 combination whereas the Therry club is confident of improving upon its creditable 1987 performances . Therry is my selection to win today . Old Haileybury, up from Section 2 await last year's premiers Old Xaverians who will not field many of last years trend setters . The Haileyburians would dearly love to upset the Xaverians against whom success has been scarce however given the Red and Blacks depth of talent I select them to open the season with a win today . SECTION 2 Banyule are hosts to No rth Old Boys who are on a high under new coach Terry Mills. If my spies have given me the correct "Mail" North should open with a victory . Old Melburnians await University Blacks. The home side should be able to win because the Black's practice form has not been top class . Ormond with virtually a new Under 19 side are at home to Ivanhoe . News from Ivanhoe indicates their side may not be as strong as that of 1987. Ormond acquitted themselves well against Parade last week and they should win today . Old Scotch after their 1987 final's fade out journey to C.B.C. St . Kilda where visiting sides seldom are able to win . Former state coach Laurie Aghan returns to the V.A .F.A . today as the Scotch coach and to welcome him back I will select the Cardinals . Whitefriars, who made a successful 1987 debut, await St . Bernards who must make the long journey to Donvale . I expect Whitefriars to be the more settled combination who shuld be able to take the points . Caulfield Grammarians have the bye . SECTION 3 Old Paradians Purple meet Monash Blues at Bundoora . The young Paradians have trained enthusiastically and at home I will take the risk and select them because University sides have built a reputation as slow starters over many seasons. Newcomers Aquinas make the long journey to Brighton Beach to play Old Brighton . I am relying on the impact Aquinas made in F Section last year to permeate through the club and inspire the Under 19 side to record a win in its initial game. St . Kevins return to the competition against new comer Old Essendon . At the risk of being wrong I expect the enthusiasm and depth of Old Essendon to be the significant factors that bring them to victory today . De La Salle (Gold) whose players showed me glimpses of form in a practice game await Hampton Rovers who I am assured are proving to be a strong combination with a depth of reserves . How can I go agains the advice tendered? Hampton Rovers are my selection ! Williamstown are at home to Parkside who reappear in the Under 19 competition after some seasons . Williamstown I suspect will prove the more settled combination and they are my selection to take the points . UNDER 19 SECTION S Our editor has charged me with reviewing and previewing these vital sections from whence tomorrow's A Section stars will emerge . My roving eye has enabled me to see six sides in action so far . In addition my reporters have conveyed a lot of information about other sides . I have made my predictions today based on fact, heresay, intuition and prejudice and naturally I am hoping for lots of luck to have them fulfilled . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988

NORM NUGENT. 3

Under 19 Fo ptball - by Norm Nugent Review of Match played, September 19, 198 7 Under 19 Section 1, Grand Fina l Old Xaverians took the premiership and the J .S . McCann Cup when they defeated Marcellin in the Grand Final . Marcellin, who led for over three quarters were unable to sustain their effort for the entire game as they were only able to add one point to their score in the final quarter . When Marcellin kicked that point some six minutes into the quarter they were then double the Xaverians score. Thus the Xavs comeback was a remarkable one . Interchange player Paul Connors, with two goals, lifted the Old Xaverians in the second half while Andrew Gowers, the star schoolboy recruit kicked three goals after being moved to full forward for the last quarter, Andrew was an inspirational player and was credited with sixteen marks . Old Xaverians were also well served by big ruckman DaMIAN Berry who fought valiatnly for the ball all day . Again Captain Paul Klein played an inspiring game for the Xavs as did Paul Lidgerwood whose fine display was capped by one high "injeanious" mark . Richard Curtin lived up to family expectations with another dashing display . For Marcellin none played better than their Captain Fred Battistella, while the dashing Peter Mason, complemented by white boots, played another serviceable game . Others who contributed positively for the Eagles included their two tall players Wooller and Archdeacon . Congratulations to Old Xaverians on their great display and on their meritorious performnces during 1987. Marcellin, too had a most successful season and the players have really borne out Coach Michael Wilson's statement that they have big hearts . NORM NUGENT.

Personality Par s TWO HUNDRED GAMES FOR BULL Bulleen United's stalwart Howard Turvey play s his 200th for the Bulls in the first game this season . Notorious on the field for his soccer tactics . this exporn's skills suffered a little for lack of an Aussie rules upbringing but he has made up for this by going in hard, elbows, knees or head . He must have knocked out fifteen blokes and been ko'd that often himself and that is just at training ! Really, Howard has improved immensely : he can kick with either foot, can take an overhead grab one bite (it is the chestmarks that bounce around) and can handball at least . . .well, at least .

MELEES

-H- has slowed a bit these days, but still goes in with the same vigour - he plays as he used to life, in the fast lane - we thought he would never reach his thirtieth birthday. Amazingly spry for a wildman of however many years, he has always kept up with the leaders in the training runs. This year he has had to surmount the hurdle of a serious injury four weeks before the first game. Every Bull applauds this great effort .

A melee is "Where an incident takes place involving players, pushing, scragging, jumping into packs, throwing each other to the ground or other similar such conduct" .

A dour backman, always first out on the training track, equally as willing to lend a hand around the club and variously a member of the committee or social committee, Howard has truly been a great asset for Bulleen United . May the old legs keep pumping for years yet.

New Umpire's Advisor

Welcome David Levens .

Letter to the Editor 13 Percy Street, Balwyn, 3103 . Dear Sir, As the fortunate recipient of the 1987 VA .F.A . Media Award, I am writing to express my thanks to the Victorian Amateur Football Association and the Marketing Sub-Committee for making such a prize available. I have also written to the sponsors, Ansett Airlines and V.A .F.A . Travel expressing appreciation for their support of the V.A .F.A . Media Award . The local print media, namely, Free Press and Progress Press, have both been supportive throughout the post season . Apart from at times their sub-editing considerably altering the text of submitted material, the constant exposure of our articles and in the case of the Free Press, publication of photos, combined in keeping the happenings of the Kew Amateur Football Club to the forefront in the sporting pages of these newspapers, both of which are widely distributed in municipalities surrounding the Kew area . As you would be aware, compilation of reports has involved assistance from any persons . I have been fortunately that all members of the Kew Club have assisted in every way possible. Importantly I have had the encouragement and involvement of my wife and family, which helped THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988

Mr. David Levens has been appointed as Advisor for season 1988, replacing Neville Nash who has taken up an umpiring position with the V.F.L . in Brisbane . By way of introduction David commenced his umpiring career in 1966 and joined the V FL . reserve grade in 1968. He graduated to senior list in 1971 officiating in 36 senior games, 65 reserve grades including finals and 81 country games . A brief stint in the Wimmera during which time he was President of the Warracknabeal Football Club saw him back on the V.FL . senior list in 1981 for another 18 reserve grade games . From 1982- 84 he was assistant advisor to the Goulburn Valley and East Gippsland Leagues respectively and was an observer of the V .F.L . Cadet Squad's Assistant Advisor, a member of both the League's Umpiring Co-ordination Committee and Cadet Squad Selection Committee . David has settled in quickly and is thoroughly enjoying his role , enormously in generating the necessary enthusiasm for the task as well as the production of the a rt icles on a weekly basis throughout the 1987 football season . My wife and I availed ourselves of the Media Award, taking a weekend trip to the Gold Coast early in November. Arrangements were capably handled by V.A .F.A . Travel and as previously mentioned I have written directly to them . Once again my thanks for the Award to the VA .FA., and I trust that in future seasons similar prizes may be enjoyed by press correspondent's from other Amateur clubs . R.D. Pickles.
