A Section Football by Peter French

Collegians gave notice that they will be a force in A Section this year following an impressive display against Old Xaverians last Saturday. I say this in spite of the Lions woeful effort against Ormond a fornight ago . Against Xavs its half back line of M ark Hibbins, Richard Schober & Matt Galbraith was the springboard of many attacks and had plenty of support from Wright & Williams and with skipper Stuart Hinched set to return, the Lions have a settled and attacking defence, Ian Roberts appears to have found the form which saw him lead the National Mutual Trustees goalkicking award in 1986 and with Peter King & Richard Herman as alternative avenues to goal it has forwards capable of kicking winning scores . The Xavs will learn from the loss and Danny Corcoran will no doubt impress on his charges that a place in this year's finals must be earnt rather than assumed . Collegians go to the University with plenty of confidence and will find the Blues in plenty of doubt . They're yet to win at home this season and have not been able to play a game out yet . Its not so much fitness as concentration and Alan Salter has some work to do in that area . Bruce ( not Neil, Terry!) Ferguson has been around Amateur football long enough to realize that an easy wi one week could well turn into a devastating loss the next, but given the realization that he has a side capable of matching it with the best, its the Lions to take the points today. old Scotch made Old Paradians work hard for victory last week which I believe will hold them in good stead for today's all important clash with Old Xavs and I've a hunch O .P's have been keenly awaiting this fixture . Much will depend on the utcome of the Brian Grills, Laurie M eehan battle and whether Geoff Greetham who has been in good touch can hold Tony P ri tchard, Brendan Considine may pick up Bill Denton & Peter Wood given the job on the dangerous Bourke . I'm selecting Parade with confidence in what will undoubtedly be a first class game. De La Salle were impressive in beating North and have recruited quietly and copetently . Waldron, Allan & Mannix are a new forward line all of whom can score goals . Holdsworth, a most impressive bigman and O'Keefe, Hanranhan & Nash form a solid and attacking last line of defence . Their home game against traditional rivals Ormond is yet another big game in a great round . After its hiccup in Round 1 the 'Monds have found form . Like De La they have recruited well and centre half forward Stuart Carboon is bound to give Wayne Walsh a headache or two. Despite its good showing at headquarters last Sunday I lean to Ormond who are a little steadier and experienced . St. Bernards almost made it last week, wasting many opportunities before failing by just 3 points . North on the other hand are putting its faith in youth . They matched it with Blues for a half and their persistance impressed me enough last Sunday to suggest they'll open their account at Essendon today . Tomorrow Old Scotch meets Marcellin at Elsternwick Park . Scotch will miss Hodge who has been knocked about this year. However they have John M oir in outstanding form and Steve Reddish is a fine on ball player and its defence of McNab, Beck, Lloyd & Drummond are all playing well . Marcellin has won two games but looked ordinary against De La Salle. On their day they've the ability to beat all comers as they play very attacking football . They have the pace and run well but they're not great defenders and give their opponents toomuch latitude . In an even game I believe Scotch will ve more desperate to notch up a second win and will provide its ardent supporters with a win . Pictured on the front cover is Ormond Captain Russell Barne s

The match of the day between Kew & Therry, after a slow start, ended in a classic heart stopping finish . Kew coach B rett Burden can thank his lucky stars that forward McAlister was as cool as a cucumber shooting for goal when Kew were 5 points down with 30 seconds to go . What a finish . Kew & Ther ry who specialize in the short passing and handball game turned on a great display with the lead changing several times . Kew were up by about 3 goals at 3/4 time, and started the final quarter well with Cavanagh goaling against the wind Therry then took control kicking 4.9. Therry hit the front with 3 minutes to go . At the final centre bouce it was Kew who got the ball out and down to McAlister . Despite moves by Bernie Dunn Biddlestone from HBF to HFF kicking 5 goals and Wrigglesworth to full back, Kew had the edge to get the points and top spot . The upset of the round was provided by Trinity who defeated previously unbeaten Bulleen-Templestowe . Trinity outplayed their opponents in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to have a solid lead at 3/4 time. Trinity's Trevor Norm~~.n provided the drive in the centre and other players applied the pressure across the centre and half forward line to prevent Bulleen-Templestowe players getting the ball up to Heath . The Trinity boys must have thought they had the game well and truly won because Bulleen-Templestowe came out in the last quarter and got their game going again kicking 7 goals to Trinity's nil . Bulleen-Templestowe had left their run too late and Trinity hungry to get their first victory for the season . There was no such excitement down at Pitcher Park where Blacks turned in another dismal performance. Parkside have improved each week and with Yokscich back were allowed to attack too easily . Blacks failure to kick goals in the two quarters against the wind left them well out of the game. Parkside converted in the forward line much better than Blacks could and players like Freeman, Williams & Sedgwick kicked valuable goals . Parkside took advantage of Blacks basic errors and went on to win by 12 goals . But as usual Blacks are not to be written off just yet . A few injuries from Saturday's game mightn't help their cause . I believe Monash coach Brian Ford noted my comments about his team's thrashing against Kew. Monash came out and showed Fawkner that they meant business kicking 9 goals to Fawkner's 1 . That proved too much of a start even though the rest of the game was fairly even . Fawkner will be looking forward to Terry Young's return this week . (Is he Loretta? Ed . ) It looks like its going to be a long season for Ivanhoe who were completely outplayed by Caulfield . It was a great percentage boosting win for Caulfield who opened their account . Looking at B grade, it now appears that Kew & Ther ry may just be a cut above the rest, and the others except for Ivanhoe fairly even . Todays games look straight forward with the two critical games being Parkside v Monash and BulleenTemplestowe v Blacks . Its good to see VFL players also get suspended for shaking goal posts, it brought back memories of Blacks Resevers Grand Final in 1984 when Blacks player David Hayes received one week for the same misdemeanour . Finally - typical of Marcellin boys to stick together . No sooner than I mention Rick Frazer and I hear from Michael Dillon "Dilly" el supremo Marcellin Reserves Coach (Grand finalists last year) just wanted to let me know that he taught supercoach Frazer everything he known . Everything Dilly? The way they were discussing training exercises on Saturday night there could be some interesting training sessions coming up . THE AMATUER FOOTBALLER 1988

A welcome return to objectivity saw five winners last week, but things will be harder from now on with the top teams meeting each other. Thomastown scored an admirable first-up win against Melbourne High having come back from the dead with only minutes to go . First-gamer Con Tskosis kicked two vital goals at the death, whilst an astute interchange resulted in another. Tony Fellows discovered the meaning of balance by dislocating what was his "good" shoulder, but centreman Ga ry Belford played another great game having wandered into the club a la Kevin Bartlett . On the other hands the Bloods will have considered themselves a little stiff to hav gone down to old mates OMs when the vital breaks didn't quite go their way . Their performance was still encouraging enough for me to rejoin the bandwagon and predict that players like the improving Snowball will see them to victory at Elsternwick Park , Balaclava have had the most difficult early draw of all clubs and travel to St . Kevins with Dave Gregory in great form . They finished the game against Banyule with 17 men after the ground had ripped most of their knees to shred . The loss of ruckman Dickson in the third quarter was a turning point of the game, as they'd been within a goal halfway through the third term . The home side had their first real test for the season against St . Kilda CBC and could have come through with flying colours but for a last quarter fade-out when ruckman Stone tired . In a close one I prefer the Tricolours. Second and third placed OMs & Banyule will have ample opportunity to play their running game at the Cordner Oval . The Witt B rothers, Je re my Nicholls & Bradshaw are central to this scheme, whereas Banyule ; deceptive ruckman Dave Williams continues to read the game well and feed their mosquito fleet . Peter Adams returned to arms after his stint at Collingwood and picked up 30 possessions in a game Banyule were disappointed not to win by more . Stewie Coulson will need to continue his good form too, and at least both teams won't have to contend with the West Heidelberg razor-blade surface . Despite the current bouyancy in the stock market, always a factor in OM's morale, I think that Banyule might just run that bit faster and further . (Apologies Sam . ) Either Old Ivanhoe or Melbourne High will break the ice out at Ivanhoe . The home side will soon be strengthened by the return of players such as Anthony Parker and at least won't have to contend with Mark Dyson's busk's night again . Their defeat by Old Brighton was largely due to a lack of fitness as they were well in the game until the last quarter . I suspect, however, that they will need a little more than one more week's training and the High's big man power wil see them prevail, even if they too tended to tire in the last ten minutes of each quarter with fatal results at Thomastown . St . Kilda CBC had a real fright last week . With ruckman Brendan Boyd's collarbone on the mend for another month they perhaps have a temporary weakness, although wingman Luke Donald's performance last week was a grand one which set Capi ro n's sensational last term up. I will give Old Brighton the chance to embarrass me by saying at this stage they have not really been tested and have yet to shak e the pretender tag . SELECTIONS Thomastown v OLD HAILEYBURIANS ST. L) Section notes by Chris Rowsto n

Do you read the newspapers on Sunday and Monday morning looking at the results - I do and wonder why all the grades don't get best players and good kickers . Maybe Peter French & Co. may consider my suggestion that our future write ups include equal billing to all sections . I'm sure all supporters whether in A Section or F Section are no different . I tipped 4 out of 4 last week with West Brunswick letting me down, but I'll give them one more chance against Old Camberwell today, This will be an interesting encounter as both clubs are desperate for a win . I must admit I haven't given Bulleen United much of a go and will now jump on their bandwagon and select them against Elsternwick today . Being a young side they have proven to be very consistent winners at home . Taking an early lead on a wind affected track Bulleen United had good players in Empey, Secton & Taylor. Holding a four goal lead West Brunswick came back with dogged determination best being Cicci, M . Magafas & Lampard . Bad kicking in the last term could have cost Bulleen the four points, but another win keeps them in touch with the four . Today sees Dick Morley play a record 224 games for Bulleen United - a club record and a very fine achievement . Hampton Rovers continued on in fine form over Elsternwick . Showing a more disciplined team plan the Rovers had better ball players in Ross, Capp, Hibbs and a strong display up forward by Alf Panagiotidis (9 goals) . Being only 5 points down in the third term Elsternwick lost concentration, kicking poorly and not backing up . They allowed the Rovers to pull away in the last term . Better players for Elsternwick were Christie, A . Contin, Verbeck & Farrington . Another percentage booster for P reston has given them a great lead up to todays game against State Bank . The result will give a clear indication as to who are the better sides in the competition . On the wide open spaces of Old Camberwell's ground Preston showed a disciplined team effort, better players being Johnston, Mason & Hepburn (8 goals) . Taking control at each change Preston showed too much system and ran away comfortable winners . Better players for Old Camberwell Mitchell, Farmer & Lablanche. State Bank showed plenty of strength in taking a good solid lead in the first half . Best for the Bank, Matherson, Cloke & Rolfs . North Brunswick tried hard all day, particularly a third quarter revival set up by C. Fox, Cannon & Demorton . State Bank steadied in the final term to take the points in the windy conditions . Today will be interesting to see how the Bankers handle Preston . Being at home I'll give them the nod . AJAX with good running players took a handy lead against Old Mentonians. Being led by their playing coach Feldy the Jackers were slowly pegged back in the second half . Best were Friedman, Silver ( Age footy journalist) and Feldy. To the credit of Old Mentonians a last half run on performance must have pleased coach Bob Jamison better players being R . Newman, M . Macquire & Warne. Today Old Mentonians are confident at home against No rt h Brunswick and I think they will win ! Today's selections : BULLEEN UNITED v Elsternwic k Old Camberwell v WEST BRUNSWICK STATE BANK v Presto n OLD MENTONIANS v North Brunswick Ajax v HAMPTON ROVERS

Firstly, let me apologise if I caused any confusion amongst my readers relating to my remarks last week about the Aquinas - St. Bedes game being played at Elsternwick Park on Sunday ; it was of course played on Saturday. Owing to the absence of fixture books and an obvious mis-print in the placing of asterisks in the Amateur Footballer the week before, I blundered . After looking at my tipping result in Round 2, not entirely unexpected but if anyone took my advice and dropped in on Sunday, the A Section game should have been worth watching . Starting to gee a bit better about this tipping caper - only two wrong last week . The coin let me down on one as Aquinas, using the spacious Como experience the week before, proved too trong for St . Bedes on the large oval at headquaters, running out comfortable 25 point winners . The other saw Brunswick splatter some more egg on my face by going under to the Friars at Donvale . Superior running play and desire by the home team coupled with some inaccurate kicking by the visitors resulted in Whitefriars returning to the top of the ladder . Old Essendon proved too good at ome for Powerhose and recorded a comfortabl 6 goal plus win A similar margin saw Old Geelong account for UHSOB and sneak into a place in the four. In the highest. scoring gme for the round, Peninsula with (if the Sunday Papers ar correct) a massive 57 scoring shots defeated Heatherton . Somewhat surprisingly Heatherton itself had 28 shots at the sticks but there's no truth in the rumour that the goal umpires have taken out R .S.I . claims. The after match oiling took care of that. 35 behinds might see some goal kicking practice at Mt . Eliza this week . The struggle for a place in the four is still pretty tigt but the next couple of weeks will shake out the lumps from the dust. Today's games for instance sees Aquinas (3rd) welcome Old Essendon (2nd) in what I expect to be a pretty close one. I think Aquinas, at home, may just win. Peninsula (5th) & Old Geelong (4th) is another tough one . After their goal shooting prctice and on their home patch, Peninsula to just knock off the OGG's. Whitefriars at home against Heathe rton should still find themselves on top of the ladder tonight . St . Bedes travel to Panda Land and should be too good for UHSOB . The remaining game has Powerhouse journeying north again to visit Brunswick . This is a crucial game for both teams to remain in touch with the four . I hope the House boys leave their form on the other side of town agin and will select Brunswick to win on the tricky Dunstan Reserve .

So we are left with a 2-5 - 2-3 scenario after 3 rounds with this commentator a!itt!e surprised with some of last week's results . Congratulations to the boys from Patterson River . Tommy Brain, training every day now in his comeback bid for the Zedders, says St . Leonards showed real poise and confidence in their 72 point win at Patto's paddock . And what about the "Clays"? . A real confidence booster over the Sainters who never really got their game going and were probably lucky to keep within striking distnce of Clayton who remain undefeated . The same goes for the Bundoora Boys wo had a five goal lead at the siren in the main game against Old Ca rey. As I predicted, the Eagles fe!l in against the Har ry Tro tters, Doveton bounced back for a comfortable win over the Artists and, in their first 4-quarter display forth season, theRedz buried the 'Towners in a fashion which prompted Willy Coach, Rollo Goetz to hold a 30 minute Anzac Eve Memorial service on the University Oval (Lest we Forget!!! ) Player of the Round : The slightly built Redders fu!l forward Adam Smith who, with intelligent leading and clever ground play, won the game for th Redz with eight brilliant goals. This Week's Matches Last week (3) Current Percentage Accuracy (61% ) Match of the Round is LaTro be at home to St . And rews and I see no reason why the Students strong marking, direct football (so suited to their home ground) shouldn't account for the Sainters who may find the pressure of maintaining possession on a!arge grund a!itt!e beyond them . The Students by 4 or 5 snaggers . The Clays haven't hit top form but they haven't lost a match so I can't see the Zedders toubling them at home. The Patterson River Boys will have been celebrating all week so they may find the Eagles a!itt!e unsettling on the Western Plains. I'm predicting the Eagles could be a surprise packet this season . They've picked up several student, from Terang who survive on ploughman's lunches and thrive on hard work; as well Coburg Amateurs have sent their regards and a few players . Coach John Moro ney (from East Keilor) has settled into his role comfortable and has the Eagles keener than they've been since Freddie Cook had them playing topless and legless a couple of years back . Nomadic skills coach, Bar ry Bennett sets a great example on the track so watch out for the Eagles. In other matches : the Doves to win at home against a shell-shocked Willy ; Old Ca rey to continue the Artists losing streak and Uni Reds, chockfu l of confidence after a win, to keep the Har ry Trotters in their current depression . This Week's Letter : Dear Peter, Two weeks ago 1 boiled my footy jumper and it got ruined . I'm worried, especially with colder weather on the way. Yours chillingly, Rollo. Dear Rollo,

Take two aspirin and lie down on the couch . When you feel better ring Hugh Lyon and complain. Yours comfortingly, Peter.

~'ersonality ~ars MILESTONES AT ST . KILDA CBOC Mick (Monkey) Clinch plays his 150th game for St . Kilda against Old Brighton . Mick, a versatile senior player from the well-known Clinch family, has great skills and physique and often turns defence into attack with his strong and direct play . One of the real characters of our Club, Mick's celebrations of the 85 premiership will long be remembered, as will his WAP

contributions. Well done Mick, from all at St. Kilda CBOC . Congratulations to Ian (Happy) Hammam on the occasion of his 150th game . 'HAP' is a veteran of many senior and reserve games, as a mean and fearless backman whose telling marks and desire to get the hardba!l have often saved games. A former committeeman and generous provider of a venue for functions, Ian's contributions to the club are gratefully acknowledge and we look forward to many more games from him .

APOLOGIES to my many readers who missed my column last Saturday . For the first time in three seasons my copy delivery was delayed in transit . Today I have endeavoured to weave my reviews and previews of Round 3 into one article. Review of matches played April 16th, 1988 - Round 3. G SECTIO N The results indicated my predications although some were closer than I would have hopes . Bloods proved too talented for Collegians by twenty six points after an interesting match . Old Haileybu ry had a twenty eight point margin over Marcellin at the final siren while Monash Whites fe!l by three points over De La Salle after a game in which both sides kicked inaccurately . Old Melburnians proved too strong for Bulleen-Templestowe and won by the comfortable margin of forty seven points . Port Colts proved far too strong for Old Scotch and won easily by seventy eight points . H SECTION Old Xaverians confirmed their top ranking when they thrashed St . Kevins by ninety five points . GTV9 continued to show improvement on their 1987 form when they defeated State Bank by seventeen points on Oval 4. Therry also stamped themselves as big improvers when they won their second game : This time by seventy points against an inaccurate Richmond Central . Old Geelong recorded a forty two point win over Balaclava while CBC St . Kilda had a huge victory over Powerhouse by one hundred and forty nine popints . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Old Haileybu ry reversed their opening round form to power to a huge one hundred and fifty eight point win over Collegians. De La Salle Blue had a fifty two point margin over a disappointing University Blues while Marcellin opened their 1988 tally with a one hundred and thirty two point win over Melbourne High School Old Boys . Ther ry met their match in Old Paradians G reen who cruised to a seventy seven point victory at Bundoora. In fact Therry did not kick a goal until the third quarter . Leaders Old Xaverians proved too strong for Bulleen Templestowe and recorded a sixty six point victory. UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Whitefriars must really have heeded David Hill's instructions during the week as they kicked the sweep against Banyule and recorded a one hundred and sixty one point victory . St. Bernards recorded their first 1988 victory when they eclipsed Old Melburnians to win by one hundred and twenty points . Ormond in their first game proved too talented for University Blacks and recorded a twenty six point victory. In a close contest Caulfield Grammarians emerged victorious by eight points over Old Scotch . St . Kilda did give Simon Meehan his first coaching victory when they proved far too strong for the struggling Ivanhoe side by one hundred and twenty eight points . North Old Boys had the bye . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Old Paradians Purple showed they are maturing as footballers, under the tutelage of Ian Bibby, when they accounted for Parkside by one hundred and thirty seven points. Parade's last quarter effort really showed they will be a major contender this season . Monash Blues did not live up to my expectations when they went down by sixty seven points against Old Brighton Grammarians . The big St . Kevin's side continued on its winning way when it accounted for Aquinas by one hundred and six points . In the closest contest of the round Old Essendon Grammarians held out De La Salle Gold to win by two points after a very even game . Hampton Rovers showed their reputation is built on fact when they accounted for Williamstown by one hundred and five points. REVIEW OF ROUND 3 PLAYED APRIL 23, 1988 G SECTION Old Haileybu ry vindicated my faith in them by defeating Collegians. However I predicted a much closer result than the one hundred and sixteen points margin Haileybu ry obtained . The Marcellin-De La Salle was the even contest I predicted . However my tipping was not sufficiently accurate to have forecast their tie! Kew proved 'hat I was a poor judge when they defied my prediction and defeated Monash Whites by twenty four points . St . Bernards, but for inaccurate kicking, would have justified my prediction they they would defeat Po Colts by a wide margin . As it was the section leaders won by twenty six points and Po rt Colts were the fourthrtplaced

side!!! Bulleen Templestowe was another side to mock my selection when they accounted for Old Scotch by thirty two points. Could the Combine be starting this season late too? (remember 1987) Bloods, whom I selected, vindicated their strength when they disposed by Old Melburnains by seventy four points . H SECTIO N GTV9 justified my selection and maintained their unblemished record when they defeated their co-tenant Ri cimond Central by one hundred and thirty four points. Section leaders Therry continued on their winning path when they defeated Old Geelong by fifty points . I was correct in forecasting that result but very wide of the mark in my selection of Balaclava against Powerhouse . In reality `House won by eighteen points and as a former Powerhouse played I am pleased . State Bank, whom I selected, forfeited to St . Kevins . In the Sunday game Old Xaverians maintained their unbeaten record when the Crocodiles defeated CBC St . Kilda by thirty poi nts . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 As I predicted Collegians proved no match for the seasoned Old Xaverians side who won by the huge margin of one hundred and fifty nine points . I was right in my selection of Old Haileybu ry to defeat University Blues. The Blues appeared a dispirited side as they went down by fourteen points. De La Salle Blue justified my faith in them when they outplayed Melbourne High School Old Boys and won by eighty eight points . Marcellin did prove too strong for Therry and it appears Mick Wilson is moulding another competitive side. The Eagles won by fifty four points, Old Paradians Green did continue on their impressive winning form as they accounted for Bulleen Templestowe by sixty seven points. These five match results gave me a perfect prediction tally for this section . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 The Banyule - St . Bernards match was a close contest and St . Bemards did emerge with the four points as the result of their nine point margin . Long time friend Terry Mills did lead his North Old Boy's players to victory over Old Melburnians as I suggested . The Northerner's margin was seventeen points . Had Caulfie :d Grammarians kicked straight they could have disproved my statement that they don't play as well away from Albert Park as they do there. The improving Ormond won this match by nineteen points . I selected Whitefriars to defeat CBC St . Kilda in the match of the round . It was a boilover, however as Whitefriars won by one hundred and two points . Old Scotch won by forfeit over Ivanhoe who have reluctantly withdrawn and University Blacks had the bye. My selection rate in this section was without blemish too! ! UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Already this section seems to have divided into two groups of teams . Williamstown could not field a side against Old Paradians Purple & Old Essendon suffered the same fate against Hampton Rovers. St . Kevins again showed strength when they defeated Monash Blues by thirty two points . Aquinas stopped me picking the section card when they won their first game by thirty two points against De La Salle Gold . Old Brighton consolidated their top bracket position when they accounted for Parkside by the big margin of one hundred and five points . PREVIEW OF ROUND 4 to be played 30th April, 1988 G SECTION Two of the lower placed sides Marcellin & Collegians meet at Bulleen . They will be evenly matched but at home I lean to Marcellin . M onash Whites do not appear to be as strong as last season and today I expect Bloods to defeat the students with ease . At home I expect the leaders St . Bernards to win well against 01 .:1 Haileybu ry. Old Scotch who are at home to De La Salle should be able to record a winning score over the Blue and Golds . Have Bulleen Templestowe set themselves to emulate their 1987 performance or did they his top form last week? Today I expect they will have sufficient talent and courage to defeat Kew. Po rt Col--; are this season's enigma. At best they will prove too talented today against Old Melburnians while at worst they will struggle. As they are playing at home I select Port Colts without any degree of confidence . H SECTIO N It is difficult to fault GTV9's form this season while that of their opponents St . Kevins is difficult to assess because they have received two forfeits . I must select GTV9 because they are the proven side . Therry lead the section and today they should win comfortably against State Bank. Balaclava will not have enough talent to extend Old Xaverians and the Crocodiles should win well . Powerhouse are poised to make their tally two in a row as I believe they will prove too strong for Richmond Central . CBC St . Kilda should be able to record a clear cut victory over Old Geelong in their encounter. UNDER 19 SECTION 1 University Blues should be able to regain lost prestige and build team work today against Collegians who are not strong enough to fully extend the Students . Old Haileybu ry should record their third successive victory by accounting for Melbourne High School Old Boys even on the small High School Oval . Therry and De La Salle Blue should play an interesting game. I believe De La Salle will take the points as is form has been superior to that shown by Therry. Near neighbours Bulleen-Templestowe & Marcellin meet at Timber Ridc : Reserve. Based on form Marcellin must be favoured to win but as the rivalry is so fierce between these sides i expect a close game ; the result of which could go either way . Marcellin are my selection . I what could be the preview of the Grand Finals Old Xaverians journey to Bundoora to meet Old Paradians Green . Neither THE AMATUER FOOTBALLER 1988 8

cie has been fully extended this season and consequently either could be vulnerable against constant pres<;ure. Xaverians will be the bigger side but Paradian tenacity should offset teir height disadvantage . The Edrnond Rice Oval is a difficult one for visitors as the bouce of the ball varies from sand belt grounds . I expect a top class match from which I favour the Old Paradians to emerge victors . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Tw disappointing sides Old Melburnians & Banyule meet on the wide spaces of the Cordner Oval . Banyule has the better 1988 record and purely on statistics I select them to win . Two leading side meet at Ormond when St . Bernards visit today. Under John Doble's guidance Ormond have reformed and are playing with confidence and skill . I select Ormond to defeat St. Bernards . Two sides who have suffered from opposition forfeits, old Scotch & No rt h Old Boys meet in Yarra Park . Terry Mills has made his players into a competitive side after last season's reverses while the experienced and capable coaching of Laurie Aghan has continued to give Old Scotch a competitive edge over opponents . Today I lean slightly to Scotch while anticipating a big North effort . Whitefriars will be at home to the University Blacks who could experience difficulty adjusting to the Donvale terrain especially if it is wet . Whitefriars have quickly asserted their strength while the Blacks have struggled . With a fair degree of confidence I select Whitefriars . Caulfield Grammar on Oval 3 should possess enough talent to defeat CBC St . Kilda whose form must be a worry to coach Simon Meehan . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 The main game of the round will be at Brighton Beach where Old Paradian's Purple are the visitors . Neither side can be faulted on this season's form and both have convincingly defeated Monash & Parkside. Who do I select? Parade could be found wanting in ruck and marking duels although Glen Bilby has acquitted himself well to date. The wind currents on the Beach Oval are tricky and its wings are not as wide as those on the Garvey Oval in Bundoora . As visitors often find difficulty at Old Brighton I select the home side to win what I expect to be a preview of a 1988 Section 3 Final . Parkside, who are yet to score a win travel to St . Kevins who head the ladder. St. Kevins must be selected again . A first up winner must emerge from the DeLaSalle Gold Monash Blues game. The Monash side has strength in is favour and through the efforts of Andrew Headber ry & David Newman on the ball and in attack I expect Monash Blues to win . Hampton Rovers, at home, will prove too strong for newcomers Aquinas while at home I expect Old Essendon Grammarians to be able to hold Williamstown to a losing score .

Personality Par s MARCELLIN MILESTONES To say that Marcellin Old Collegian VICTOR JOHNSON is laconic is to understate the abvious . Vic has cruised through his 50th game with the club, thrilling crowds with his delightful skills. He should be a soccer player, but were glad Vic has stuck with the oval ball . Let's see you chalk up the ton Victor . MATTY KEAYS has also played his 50th game for Marcellin and in the process has managed to establish himself as the best dressed bloke at the club. Working for Country Road, Matty does everything with the touch of class, but where does he get the money for those clothes? Well done Matty . CLYDE SAMPSON seems to have been with the Eagles for only a couple of weeks, but the big fella has already played his 50th game with the Club. Plenty more where they came from Clyde - Well done! The next Marcellin footballer to chalk up his 50th is GREG SHEAHAN . Greg has had his injury problems, but is a terrific little rover who models himself on the little red-head from Windy Hill, Alan Ezard . Greggy is that hungry, but is a fierce competitor and is sure to be a top player for the club in the years to come . TONY DAY has watched his brother Mick become one of the senior players around the club throughout his 50 game career with Marcellin, but all the time he has qietly been going about his own business . He reached his milestone in last year's Reserve grade Grand Final and went on to win the Best Finals Player for the reserve the same year, hving won the B&F in the thirds the previous year . Congrats Tony and keep climbing that !adder. Another bloke to play his 50th with Marcellin in JOHN HARVEY. John has been plagued by ankle problems recently, but reached his half century in last year's preliminary final with the Two's . Well done Johnny. The final eagle to be recognised in this issue is ROBBIE O'CALLAGHAN . Continuing the family tradition with Marcellin, Robbie is another to reach the 50 game mark and would probably have played heaps more had he not been hindered by a 'dicky' groin . Get Kylie to have a!ook at it for you Robbie and get back on the track .

Bulleen United's Captain Richard Morley this week breaks the club record in playing his 224th game. The Bull's pre-eminent player, having won the club's best and fairest nine times, Dick has also won the Amateur Section B&F three times as well as being runner-up twice. By taking over the coaching role for a coup!e of years, he has kept the club moving up through the grades. A key position player at CHB, he is a strong mark and superb kick, but not content with just beating his opponent, Dick shows such dash that he gathers kicks all over the ground, often dobbing through a couple of raking goals. It is hard to imagine the Bulls without Dick at the tiller and putting in at training - several coaches have remarked on his dedication in all facets of the game - but he is equally involved in administration, working tirelessly for the success of an amateur club, many a!esser man has been lured away into the semiprofessional ranks, probably no one has more deserved his life membership . With phenomenal consistency, "the Bird" is sti!l turning ou best player performances and it appears that he will never grow old, nor have trouble notching up over 300 in the future . Congratulations Dick, everyone at Bulleen realise it has truly been an honour to play with "that mcn Morley".

SAINTS PLAYER SCORES TON Congratulations to Gary Ritchie who made his 100th appearance for St. Andrews last Saturday 23/4/88 against Clayton . Gary who has given many years of service is a reliable defender who always tried hard and produces good form with his dashes putting the Saints into attack . Keep up the good work Gary.

KEW MILESTONE S Ben Casuria & Darren Jehu both play their 50th game for Kew today . Ben began with Kew U19s in 1983 and graduated to the Seniors as a wingman but then suffered a shocking run with injuries.Ben is now re-establishing himelf on the half back for the Reserves with an eye on a spot in the Seniors . Darren plays in our G Grade Club XVIII team and is noted for his dashing play on the wing . Good luck today to Ben and Darren from all at Kew . THE AMATUER FOOTBALLER 1988 14

Umpires Corner by Ron Lippol d The fifty metre penalty keeps popping up - well done to Bushy - after 3 blind turns and 150 metres the crowd suddenly realised what he was doing . It's often a thankless task being the trainer/steward, but we will from time to time, pat some of them on the back, two such people stand out in Barry from Old Scotch & Paul from Parkside . They always assist the umpires when they can and often go out of their wa for them . Well done fella's . Congratulations go to Tim Keating on his recent marriage, did Ted give the groom away? Now the honeymoon is over it's time to upset the "missus" and get back to your umpiring Tim . Why are they calling Andrew Belcher the "Mechanical Man"? Is he the Axeman? New umpires keep rolling in from the bush and other leagues . It is very refreshing to find one of the reasons they have come to us is to broaden their experience. It shows the high regard in which the VAFA is held . Let's hope we hang on to them and get many more . PERSONALITY OF THE WEEK . Name : Charles Sutherland Umpire: Field - 2nd yea r Age : 19 and singl e Occupation : Student (fees unpaid) Favourite Food : Japanese Favourite Drink : Beer and Sak e Drives : Nothing since that famous right hand turn at Brighton Yacht Club, Pre-Game ritual : Sauna, Spa and Taxi . Biggest influence on career : Gary 'God' Ablett & Jacko (ed . - why?) Ambitions: To be knighted (it would sound good too! ) Umpire a game where no-one swears at him . Play cricket for Australia (until then Melbourne Uni will do) . Thats all - "Keep on Bouncing" LIPPY.

50 GAMES AT ST. KILDA CBOC Another young player reaches a milestone at St . Kilda when John "Muggsy" Murrihy plays his 50th game against Old Brighton . One of several courageous little men in the reserves, Muggsy is a great trier who bores in like a true rover and is often responsible for goal-scoring moves. Well done, Muggsy, and we look forward to your next 50. 50 GAMES AT UHSOB "They said you'd never make it" - Round 3 against Old Geelong saw the 50th appearance for UHSOB by Jamie "Gammy" Palmer. Gammy is not only large in stature but also large in dedication and club spirit. Originally from Coolaroo Rovers, "Gammy" played his first game of amateur footba!l in 1984 . It has taken five seasons and a dozen trips to hospital for him to achieve his milestone. At UHS he is the backbone of the defence, where his strong marking and straight ahead style of play could be responsible for his many hospital trips . Being one of the club's most popular and humorous members, Gammy can always be seen at our social functions and is always one of the last drunkards to leave . His achievements include 1988 committee man and senior vice captain, 1987 best and fairest runner-up, 1986 best finals player, and he is the reigning club tomato-sauce skulling champion! Congratulations "Gammy", from all your friends at UHSOB, Royal Melbourne, St . Vincents and PANCH . Round six awaits!

KEW KAPER S The Kew F.C . is establishing a Past Players, Officials and Supporters Association and would welcome queries from any former Club members to help bolster the ranks . Already Bob Burden, Ken Rogers & Dick Mainsbirdge have got together to establish direction . The aim of the Association is to keep former members together, not only with attendance at matches, but with several mixed Social functions, the publishing of a Monthly Newsletter and the awarding ofaP.0 .0&S .Trophy So come on all you former guys (and girls) who may be now tied up with another Amateur Club give Bob Burden a ring on 859 6718 (A.H .) or better still attend a match and renew and re-establish past friendships - participation only is required . MONASH BLUES N EWS Congratulations to Andrew McGregor who recently played his 100th game against Fawkner and was typically amongst the best players . Mac has had a most successful career at Monash with a swag of awards to his name, including the D grade best and fairest award in 1986 . A great inspiration to his team mates for his persistence and determination on and off the field, Mad has this year appointed himself captain, a position he obviously deserves as nobody protested . Congratulations Mas and all the best from your team-mates and friends .

Old Geelong congratulates two 50 game players, Andrew McDonald & Rob Stewa rt . After a career badly affected by a troublesome back, Macca finally made it in the H Section side a couple of weeks back, though most of his games have been played in the seniors . A great exercise in perseverance and we look foward to a full season from him in 1988 . On the subject of backs, its the turn of Firsts' Backman Rob Stewa rt this week (subject to any rural crisis in the meantime) to play his 50th for the Club . A great game last week epitomised the effort and contribution in his first 49 matches - we look forward to a repeat today .

ROUND 4 - 5 YEARS AGO - 1983 Simon "Harry" Costello played his 200th game for Uni . Blacks when he took the field against Monash . It was a disappointing day when Monash recorded its first win, 13 .16 to 11 .14. Harry's career is worth recording - the first player to reach 200 senior games with Blacks, Best and Fairest, 1973-76-77-78, Victorian team 1975-77-78-79--80-81-82, VAFA Captain 1981, All Australian 1979. (Harry's brother Tony, also played 197 games with the Blacks. ) 'Gentleman' Jim Peters retired as an umpire after 548 games, 379 with the VAFA (133 field, 5 boundary, 241 goal) . Foundation Member and Life Member of the Club "Conga" Ericksen played his 250th game for Old Mentonians. In his career "Conga" had coached the reserves to a premiership. (Colin was recented awarded a VAFA Certificate of Merit for his services to O.Mentonians - Ed . ) Old Paradians (B) continued their unbeaten run with a 16 point win over Bulleen-Templestowe, 23 .10 .148 to 20.12 .132 . Best were "Captain Courageous" Arthur Roe (playing his 150th game), Gleason, P. Wood (OP( & VanDenDriest, Delanty, Ling (Bulleen Templestowe). Collegians, back in he Under 19s for the first time since 1939 recorded its first win . 250 games to Jeff Perkins & Ian Ramsay of Elsternwick, both life members of the club, and committeeman and treasurer, respectively, and to Kevin D ri nan (St. Kilda CBOC), a magnificent full back and winner of three Club Best and Fairest awards . 10 YEARS AG O Uni Blues annihilated North O.B. with a 10.6 to a solitary goal in the second term, the feature of the game. B rown, Yeo, Schauble ( Blues & Carlson, Kelly, Randles (NOB) were best . Only bright spot for North was comeback in the reserves of former top-class halfback player, Steve Maule. 200 games to "Goffa" Stevens, senior vicepresident of O .Ivanhoe Grammarians. West Brunswick (D) remained undefeated with a strong 12 point win over MHSOB in a high scoring game, 19 .16 (130) to 18 .10 (118), Best were Brockwell, Ceddia, Dagg (West B) & R .Staley, R .Wood, MHSOB. Milestones at Old Brighton : 150 to dashing long leftfoot kicking wingman Owen Millis and 100 to And rew Mullett whose considerable courage and football skills had been an inspiration to his teammates .

Andrew had also served the club for many years as press correspondent and registration secretary. Kew honoured 200 games from Terry Hayes, record club Best & Fairest four times. Interstate player in 1974, club captain in 1977 and 1978, Kew had never seen a more courageous and dedicated member. 15 YEARS AGO - 1973 Caulfield Grammarians (27.17) played brilliant football to annihilate Old Paradians (3.11) who turned in a miserable performance. Griffiths, McNicol & G. Fletcher (7 goals) were best for Caulfield while Lyons, Ha rt & McLaughlin struggled for Old Paradians . One hundred games to John Skerry, Peter Hartigan, Ian Harris, all of Alphington, Rick Porton, Neil Malone ( MHSOB) & Ron Baker ( Ivanhoe) . A Section captains were G re g Tootell Caul . Grammat ., Graham Warfe Coburg ., Guy Wilson Geelong., R. Booth Monash, Shane Magui re North OB., Ross Duke Old Paradians., Roger Wood Ormond ., Barry Amott St . Bemaals OC., and B. Cottrill Uni Blues. Who captained Ivanhoe? On the bottom in B after 3 rounds, De La Salle (4 years later - an A Section Premiership - Ed .) Kew (B) kicked 7.2 to Uni Blacks 3 .4 in final quarter to run out winners and record their first victory . 20 YEARS AGO - 1968 Ormond paid tribute on the passing of the grand old man of the club, Les Smith, foundation president in 1931 . Les Gordon, veteran Powerhouse captain coach, played his 300th game - the last 200 had been consecutive. Frank Snell (Kew) & John Booth (Old Paradians) were appointed coaches of teams to play Tasmania & South Australia respectively. Melbourne High & Uni Blacks drew - 9 .14 apiece. Another thriller was Kew v Old Scotch, with Kew 33 points ahead at the lat change, and scoreless in the last quarter, handing on to win by four points . Best were Paterson, Findlay, Goonan (Kew) & Mackay, R.Beau re paire & P.Clarke ( O .Scotch) . 30 YEARS AGO - 1958 Members of the Permit Committee were F re d Coldrey (chairman), W.Gallacher, F.Hamiiton, George McTagga rt & K. Phillips. Old Scotch recorded their first win over Old Melburnians for eight years with a convincing 21 point victory. Parry, Wilson & Law, later a Hawthorn star rover,

were best for Old Scotch with Pinkus, Turner & Morris serving Old Melburnians well .Parkside maintained their unbeaten record in C Section when they fought back in second half to best National Bank by 19 points. Best were Barry, Dite, Dempster ( Parkide) & Dunn, Strickland, Wall (National Bank). UHSOB extended congratulations to coach George Murray - a proud father. Amateur results were being broadcast on Saturday nights by 3UZ with scores repeated again on Sunday mornings by John Russell later a leading racecaller - N .R .) . Who was the best player for Port Melbourne in their one point win over AJAX? (Will that Junior Section coach stand up? - N .R .) One hundred games to Allen Morris, Old Scotch vice captain, club best and fairest in 1957, and runnerup in 1952 and 1953 . Allen had been by his example an inspiration on and off the field .

B Section captains were Phil McLaughlin Old Para, dians., D.Hoffman ES&A Bank ., Rex Jones F . er House., Michael Roet Uni Blacks., Noel Stokes Kew., Noel Rundle Old Geelong Gram ., Geoff Paul MHSOB ., & Laurie Anstee Hampton Rovers . Who captained Comm . Bank & Geelong? 40 YEARS AGO - 194 8 Old Melburnians & Uni Blacks, both undefeated, met in the match of the day. The Dark Blues kicked a goal against the wind in the last quarter to win by 4 points - stars for the victors were Evan Macgregor & Ted Cordner while for the Blacks Denis Cordner & Kevin Dillon gave great service. Hampton Rovers notes read : "Our star was Peter Lucas, whose debut was a gem" - became a great half-back for Collingwood .

SUPERULES REPORT Collegians posted its first win for the season with a solid performance against Beaconsfield . In the first half Collegians were unable to make the most of its many opportunities and things were looking grim at half time with Beaconsfield leading 5 .6 .36 to 3.5.23 . With a number of positional changes and a lift by every player Collegians were able to run out comfrotable winners by 25 points . The win was even more pleasing when you consider it was achieved without any of our Ex VFL players . Finals scores Collegians 11 .9 .75 - Beaconsfield 7.8 .50. Goal kickers Roach, McKenzie, Hancock 2, Laragy, Smith, Salter, Mason & Grant . Better players : Nash, Smith, Mason, Salter, Laragy, Sawyer. Although players are still welcomed we desperately need the services of an experienced umpire for our four remaining home games which are on May 15, June 5, July 3 and August 15 . Anyone interested contact Lindsay Rihards 842 2661 or Umpires Advisor David Levens .

Personality Pars 100 GAMES AT CLAYTO N In this weeks game against St . Andrews Joe Caygill will play his 100th game . Joe commenced his football with the Club in 1980 and after playing every game that year missed the next season after moving to Queensland. Season 1982 saw his return but a broken foot saw him miss the last five games of the season . In 1983 Joe had a mixed season but in 1984 he again played ever game in the Seniors and reached his 50th . In 1985 and 1986 Joe had good seasons missing only two games through an enforced rest . The Executive of the Club take this opportunity to wish Joe all the very best in todays game and on behalf of all the players and suppo rt s around the Club, CONGRATULATIONS. TO THOM O'S TERRIFIC TOILER S To all those who assist with the odd jobs every Saturday - many thnkas and please keep up the good work . Without those that assist with timekeeping, boundary & goal umpiring etc . we would not survive. Welcome to Evan Diamond, father of our Reserves Coach . Even has fitted in nicely and looks after the Reserves needs, such as drinks oranges etc . Thanks and great to have you on board from all at Old Carey .

OLD CAREY Another of our top footballers is moving North to Old . Rod Macauley, best and fairest in 1986 has been promoted in his job with Ampol and commences work in "sunny" Queensland at the end of May . The "quiet achiever" will be missed - no club can afford to lose a winner who averages 30 possessions a game . All at Old Carey wish you every success in your new job and hope to see you back soon . Great to see Jim McQuie back in sparkling form . Jim was very sick for some time and as a result his form dropped, however he is now showing a real exhibition of just what he can do. As well as playing, Jim looks after the strapping/trainers needs of our club ; a job he does admirably. Well done Jim from all at Old Carey. Best wishes and bon voyage to Chris M cHarg from all at Old Carey. Chris and some friends have decided to see what life overseas is like and are heading off on a working holiday for a year or two. Hope you have a great time and there is still a place at the club for you on your return . Have a terrific trip. Terrific send-off at the Le Gear household . "OLD CAREY - LOOKING GREAT IN 88"

DOVETON BEST EVE R Doveton Reserves 29 .29.203 win over Eltham last week established the "Two's" Highest Score ever, and the biggest winning margin of either side . The seniors highest is still the first game of 1985 38 .15. 239 against Monash Whites. 100 GAMES FOR "SHAKY BILL" Congratulations to Peter "Shaky Bill" Davison, from all at Aquinas, on playing his 100th game, at Elsternwick Park . Peter was one of the founding members of the Club back in 1981 . Peter has had a varied time at Aquinas, starting off as the first ruck in the seniors in our first game, playing in four grand finals and doing his sting on the committee. Everyone at the club is pleased that Peter has come out of retirement to notch up his 100th, and we all hope that he will continue for as long as he can . Once again, congratulations Shaky from all at Aquinas . PARKING PROBLE M All amateur Clubs which have to play Old Xaverians in A, H and J.1 U19 are reminded of our problem with parking at Yarra Park . I can assure all those people that have told me to write to John Cain, The Melbourne City and the VAFA : that all this has been done. Parking signs indicate all NO PARKING AREAS to disregard them will only get you a ticket . We are sorry but the rules are the rules ! Brian Lugar Old Xav. Press Sec. In "Looking Back" Noel Rundle asks who was captain of Old Xaverians in 1958 . Brian Doyle one of the Xaverians champion footballers and an outstanding rover. I am sure Ian Mun ro will support these claims. Brian Lugar Old Xav. Press Sec. 150 GAMES FOR GEORGE All at Old Camberwell Football Club congratulate and thank George Yo ung in playing his 150th game today. George has been a loyal and hard working member of our club for many years and has become one of our most consistent and reliable players. George's commitment and attitude makes him a dream to coach and as for all his playing years is one of the first picked . In defence or attack Georges experience and flair makes him a truly valuable player . Thanks George and we all hope we can help celebrate your 200th game in the future. 100 GAMES FOR STRACHN Y Finally the little Aussie battler has reached the 100 game milestone for Old Camberwell Football Club . ^trachny typifies the spirit and commitment that our

club looks for from our players . On the field Strachny's aggression and toughness causes a few people to cringe (especially the coach) but makes him a truly valuable player. Noted for his 'Charlie Manson' skills Strachny occasionally amazes his peers with the goal or mark of the day. However people still cannot watch with Strachny lines them up, especially when standing in the goal square . On and off the field Strachny has been a great clubman, which we all truly appreciate. Richmond Central Football Club sincerely wish to pass on their best wishes to Andrew 'Hitler' Hirscher who unfortunately broke his arm against GTV9. Andrew was potentially our best and fairest winner this season, but hopefully the courage he has shown can spur others at the club to greater heights and help lift us out of the mire ! OLD PARADIANS CROWLEY MAKES IT TO 50 GAMES All at Old Paradians extend congratulations to Steve Crowley on playing his 50th game for the club on 23rd April, 1988, against Old Scotch . Although commencing in the seniors in 1984, injuries and temporary retirement in 1986 season, prevented him reaching this milestone earlier, Steve being a reliable player and good clubman, we hope from now on, he will have an injury free run towards his 100th game, and wish him the very best in achieving that milestone . 150 at AJA X Much to his disappointment AJAX neglected to mention Mark Feldy's 150th game for the Club late last season . So let's recitfy the situation, albeit it very late and say to Mark, Well done ! Feldy commenced his career with AJAX in 1975 and immediately came under notice on g hal back flank or on the ball . His tough, tearaway style of play was a feature in two premiership sides (1975 and 1979) and he is generally considered one of the most courageous players to ever pull on AJAX guernsey . Feldy retired from football in 1982 to establish his now flourishing pharmacy and to raise a family . In 1986 he returned to the club and appeared to have lost none of his ability as a player . In 1988 he took on perhaps the most unenviable job in Amateur Football, as coach of AJAX . He has taken to coaching like a duck to water and still manages to contribute well on the field . If anyone is going to arrest AJAX's alarming slide, its Feldy and even through the past couple of games have been disappointing, we've no doubt that AJAX is in for good times while he's coach .
