Thanks from the Presiden t The 1988 Launceston A .A .F.C . Carnival must go down as one of th most satisfying in which the V.A .F.A . has ompeted . Our success in being undefeated in the three games played, despite the fact that we fielded almost an entirel y er~ team reflects not only on the players who performed so well but especially on that doyen of interstate coaches, John Fishers . To John, the players, selectors, medical support staff, team managers and everyone else associated with the ;_jmpaign I extend heartfelt thanks and congratulations of a grateful Association .
Vics win 13th Titl e victoria won its 13th A .A .F.C. Carnival when it overpowered South Australia in Launceston last Saturday . The Vics . set up its 14-goal win by restricting the Croweaters to just one goal in the first term whilst its scored seven . The Victorian defence led by a dashing Robbie Fuller who received grand support from Smith, Schober, Burden, G reetham & Considine was impassable whilst the link men in particular And re w Jobling, along with he centre line of Moloney, Young & Kingston continually created opportunities for the forwards, who didn't at them down . The Vics added a further 7 goals in the second quarter and put the issue beyond with a 10-goal third term . South Australia restored some pride with four goals in as many minutes at the commencement of the final quarter but not to be denied the Vics responded with goals by Matton (2) & Abrahams. Final Sco res : Victoria 27.11 .173 defeated South Australia 13 .11 .89. Goals : Schuhkraft 5, Egan 4, Jobling 4, Taylor 3, Kingston 2, Beers 2, Moloney 2, Abrahams 2, Matton 2, Macauley. Universi4y Blues are at home to No rt h in another game in which two of last week's losers will meet with plenty . Having watched Egan & Maloney display their considerable talents in Launceston last week, Mark ,. Hannebery will be thrilled with the prospect of their return plus that of "Mr . Dependable", Paul Considine. ese three give North a significant increase in options and they, like Old Xavs. will be out to prove they're ;_able , of kicking more than two goals in a match . Blues weren't much better scoring just three against Marceland I believe they'll find that North attack the ball as hard if not harder than the Eagles, and so its No rt h i: ~~unce back with a win today which bring us to the match of the day between St . Benrards and Old Paradians. St . Bernards will approach this home game with plenty of confidence following its 71 point win over the Cardinals, and should Marcellin fail at East Malvern the Saints could move into the top four . old Paradians on the other hand will be just as anxious to keep its two game break on Old Xaverians and :_ return of Beers, Abrahams & Spillane will see the side close to full strength . pelieve OP's greater consistency and all round skill will see them through a very even game. With representative football now behind us, and only 8 rounds remaining the battle for survival and a place in the top four is on in earnest . By upsetting the Students, Man;eiiin has grabbed a rather shaky hold of fourth place although from all accounts their win was meritorious . To establish itself as a real contender it will need to beat De La East Malvern today, quite a task really, given its poor record against the D's and its general lack of consistencyatas an A Section Club. Despite Old Paradians last week the D's were not far from victory and welcomed the return of Mike Knuppell . The inclusioninaccuracy of Paul Holdsworth today will also strengthen the side and the threat of relegation will be ample incentive for a De La victory . Ormond showed its great deptch with a grand display against Old Xaverians. When one takes into account that Taylor, Cox, Schuhkraft, Jobling, Kingston and skipper Barnes all return for today's game against Collegians it would seem a matter of how far Ormond . Well I don't see it that way although I find it difficult to go against the leaders, two weeks on end especially with the calibre of player returning . However Ormond would not want to take the Lions lightly. Collegians traditionally play well at the Trott against Ormond and were most impressive in beating North last week . They were first to the ball backed one another up and ran well repeat of that sort of endeavour will make this a most entertaining game but nine wins from ten matches is .aArecord that only Ormond has attained and its that sort of consistency and planning that will give them victory today . More than any other side, Old Scotch will welcome the return of its interstate players . They were sorely undermanned last Saturday and had no answer to St . Bernards height, strength and tenacity . Their opponents today, Old Xaverians, were just as unimpressive . They managed only two goals, both by Nick Bourke and will need to improve markedly to beat a strengthened Old Scotch who would realize the importance of a win today . I'm going to put Zavs . effort down to the fact that they were playing Ormond (who have beaten the other two sides in the current four by 20 and 16 goals respectively) and expect the Xavs to bounce back with a morale boosting win this afternoon . The Sist Report on B Sectio n
In amongst the great results for the Victorian side were some highlights for B grade footballers Brett Burden (Kew) and Terry Young ( Fawkner) were named in the All Australian Team . Both players were named in best players on two out of three occasions with Brett best against W.A . and Terry second best against S .A. p . goalkickers were Young 5, Matton 4 & Paul Crotty 1, with Matton kicking a memorable goal against vv Mallon, Young & Burden played in all three games whilst Crotty played in 1 . Back across the strait on a colt, wet and windy Saturday, desperation and a little luck was the order of the d-in games which were mostly low scoring . The Blacks v Kew game turned out to be much closer than expecte-_ with defensive work dominating . Its difficult to say if Kew were 'lost' without Burden as the conditions did rr allow them to get their systems going . On the other hand the inconsistent Blacks took the game right up r Kew and did hit the front in the dying minutes . Kew answered quickly. Switches of Cerni to the centre and Some,; rville to CHF gave the Blacks a much needed boost in areas that Blacks had not really been dominant in rcent!y. For Kew rover Thornley played well as did full back Bruno . Good news for Kew, Chris Haralambopoulos kicked 7 goals in a comeback in the Reserves, and Joe Busutii assures me he's not far away and will definitely be back before the end of the season . In the Trinity v Fawkner game, the scoring shots were relatively even 26 to 22 but the results was miles apa- 64 points . Fawkner converted more effectively than Trinity who were inaccurate once again . Fawkner kicks against the wind and led at 1/4 time and went from there. They combined well to get the ba!l down to forwa,c Selleck who had a good game kicking 3 . Busst worked hard in the ruch and the rovers did well . For Trinity . Taylor back after injury played a good game as did Dunne and Glass. Out at Monash, Caulfield got up to have their second win for th season in what was a close game all da, Monash missed a sitter in the last 10 minutes which could have made a difference but Caulfield finally gc the points in a close one. Harlock dominated in the centre as did ruck rover Stevenson . For Monash McGregor & Zacharidis were the best . In the other games Parkside regulars Segewick, Page, Sturgess & Williams all fired up to help their tear, beat Bull/Templestowe by 26 points . Bull/Templestowe are now only one game clear in the four but the, percentage should see them safe for a few weeks yet . Ivanhoe returned to their bad form when they were soundly thrashed by Therry . Therry keen to make amend_ for their unexpected loss to Monash, showed that even without state players Matton & Paul Crotty they ca~ sti!l win easily . Looking at todays games, there are three which hold interest . Out at Mutton Reserv e Blacks meet Fawkner in what is a very important game . Both sides need a win to put them out of the relegation stakes . Blacks ma, be hoping that Terry Young gets snapped up by a League Club before the June 30 deadline! Even if he is playing it should be a close one . Out at Albert Park, Caulfield who are now getting their act together, just might worry Therry. Caulfield have a reasonable percentage so a win would see them out of second last position if the other results go their way. After a close one last week, Kew will be set to re-group against the inconsistent Monash . The game is at Kew but if the conditions are bad this might be a turn-up . In the other two games its difficult to see Parkside losing to Therry or Ivanhoe overcoming Bul/Templestowe - even so I'm not willing to bet on that at this time of the year!
PeirsonaW Pars PRESTON MBOB - MILESTONE S Fortunately for Preston they have a young chap who has reached a terrific milestone at the tender age of 22 . , Peter won't be waiting at the Banyule gates today, but all the same it's Judgement Day for Old Haileyburibeat the wet last week with an early burst inspired by the sensation of the week, ex-Derb y ans . The Bloods cReter Tony Gilchrist . Not happy with burning his mates in the seconds and taking money off young children ,an, mate Adnrew Walden's $50 at 2/1 odds), "Gilla" notched three goals in the first fifteen minutes of his • rst senior game for three years . The home side will also hjave the in-form skipper Seccull to worry about, but ai,er yet another impressive running and bustling display last week are unlikely to suffer insomnia from any op;,onent . Holt, Adams and Sutterby give this even team a touch of class, but their eleven straight wins are only •nree more than Haileyburians . If the Bloods are prepared to put their bodies in and run as much as I am preared to stick my neck out, they will become the first and possibly only team to win at Warrigal Park this season . „'atching the result with interest will be Old Melburnians, also in the battle for the double chane. They will have ,~ienty of time to look over their shoulders too, as Melbourne High's lack of pace on the vacuous Cordner Oval li make your average VW look like the OMs Ferraris . The High put in a dismal one against Banyule and will re looking to make amends, especially before ruckman Peter Sala departs for the UK . Thomastown rover Trevor Bell did a Barry Breen when he kicked a point from a deliberate shot after the siren :o win the game against St . Kevins . The story goes that he aimed for a behind instead of a goal as he was on the boundary line and the minor space was closer, despite a dirty dozen men on the mark for the vital kick, r .vas a great win as the boys all wore black arm bands in memory of Life Member marj Ferlazzo, who passed ;:ay during the week . Ruckman Col Pearson also played a major part in the 'Towns' second win for the seazon, which now puts the bottom five teams within a game of each other. Old Brighton are the first of a number of home games for the northerners, but despite the half-day trip I can't see them dropping the points or fourth olace to an uncomfortably close St . Kilda . No doubt furious at their narrow loss, St Kevins will be keen to make amends at the expense of another lower ream, Old Ivanhoe, who have gone longer without key forwards than a Porn between baths . Matt Davis and Nick Harris have shown fine form, but a twelve-goal loss in the floods can hardly have lifted morale . The Saints must now seriously face the prospect of relegation, a disappointing position to be in after a solid start to the season . Even the home ground advantage will not be enought to save Old Ivanhoe however. Arthur and Ken Hartley, along with competition Best & Fairest contender Neil Monahan, are in the sort of form to help prevent Balaclava suffering a similar sort of towelling to the one it copped from St . Kilda C .B .C. early in the season . Matt Driscoll was allowed to forget about forwards and had a great day in the ruck and Charlie Capi ro n proved wrong the doubters who said he was kike a rubber duck in the wet . It's almost just as well coach Peter Da rvel, recovering from a knee reconstruction, was still laid up in hospital after a two-game comeback : the crutches which unfortunately are to become a familiar sight over the next few weeks would have sunk faster than the Titanic in last week's bog . His team seems to win and lose in streaks of four or five - current!y winning is in vogue, so what else can I do . . . . . A tense struggle between all sides is beginning to unfold as sides vie for the four and others, desperate t w- r matches now, try to avoid the relegation zone . The big mover last week was Bu!leen United, moving from nintr to equal fourth on the lader and playing Pre ston today they have all the good reasons to win and press foa finals position . When you look at their record recently, they haven't done much wrong, winning three on en, and must rate highly today to beat P re ston at home . Elsternwick must win today, and stop the rot, and d, home with the advantage they'll take the points . Today sees a D Section game at Elsternwick Park (not befer time!!) between the Rovers and Old Mentonians. Both sides prefer the wide open spaces and hopefully r good conditions we will see a good standard of game . The Rovers strength lies in their tall forwards, if the, receive the bal quickly they will kick a winning score . The match of the day is Old Camberwell versus Nth . Brunswick . both sides must win to keep their chance of survival alive in D Grade . At home the Wells will prove too godd, having more running players and the abilitv; to move the ball more effectively . No rt h iwill miss De Norton for his goals scoring ability and for that reason the Wells to take the points in what will be a very entertaining game. A final note - last week I picked the car(] (five winners) I though I'd mention it, not for any particular reason ! Last week Old Mentonians were very impressive against the lack lustre State Bank. the ball quickly through the back line O.M . set up opportunities for their forwards and a feature beingRunning their sure hands in the wet conditions . What can I say about State Bank - not much - they really need to get together and plan positively. Best for O.M's Rogers, Cater and Sciarcca and State Bank Aumont, Guy and Griel . Preston, second on the ladder played Elsternick who are now under extreme pressure to find winning form again . The Bullants moved the ball to position and had more strength up forward to kick a winning score . EIsternwick although beaten, showed plenty of endeavour and fought it right out . P re ston had better players in Heenan, Mason and Hepburn and Elsternwick, N eeson, Houlihan adn Contin . Bulleen United kicked vital goals early in the first half against Nth Brunswick to hold a comfortable lead in the windy and very cold conditions . The Bulls were too steady and slogged their way to their 3rd win on end . Best for Bulleen, Foley, Morley and Taylor and Nth Brunswick, Grimaldi, H . Tsailtas and Balazsy . In an exciting game at Ajax, the Old Camberwell side won, and the result may prove very important later in the season . The Wells with the wind, kicked poorly but held a 4 point lead at half time . A desperate struggle saw the Jackers get to within one point with ten minutes to play, but couldn't convert, letting the Wells take the points. Best for the Jackers, Felby, Bursztyn and Borenstein and Old Camberwell Beal, Jepson and Hopkins . In blustery conditions Hampton Rovers held sway all day over West Brunswick . The Rovers running players moved the ball well considering the conditions . West Brunswick were very keen and enthusiastic but were unable to hold the Rovers who came away for another win . Best for the Rovers E . ABelnjak, Capp and Hetherington and West Brunswick, Anderson Casley and McNo rton . E Section Report by John Palme r
Tile only major surprise from last round were the final scores recorded at Como! I felt sure there had been a misprint in the Sunday papers when I read Old Essendon 1 .6 d Old Geelong 1 .5. No way known that can be correct says I - O .K ., conditions turned out to be pretty lousy in the afternoon, but - 1 goal apiece!!! There nad to be a digit missing . Then, what happens - same thing repeated in Monday's press, much to my chagrin . Fancy missing on a perfect 5 out of 5 by 1 solitary point . The result of the game now means that only percentage separates these teams in 4th and 5th spots on the ladder. The next couple of weeks will be pretty important as they no doubt will appreciate. Aquinas further consolidated its position in the four with a comfortable 4 goal victory over Heathe rt on . An improved U.H .S .O.B . stuck close to Brunswick for most of the day to fail by just 10 points at the final siren . Although the conditions didn't help, the Old Boys had more scoring shots and their inaccuracy proved costly, fop team Whitefriars donkey-licked Penisula and a place on the lower rungs of the ladder now seems assured for the Pirates. The final game of the round saw Powerhouse take the points over St . Bedes to keep hold of second position and make St. Bedes task just that little more difficult as they are now 2 games out. These results didn't change any positions on the ladder but tightened the middle order somewhat . Those teams sitting on 4,5, and 6 all must recognise the importance of the next couple of weeks as opportunities exist to gain a break and ensure a finals berth even at this early stage . Today's games sees some interesting contests . Old Essendon and St . Bedes do battle at Essendon . I reckon this ground will be pretty boggy as it has the unusual feature of being able to hold water very well at this time of the year. I'm going to tip the home team in a low scoring contest, but with more goals than last week please fellas . Aquinas at home to Old Geelong is a tough one . The Oggs could lose 4th spot with a loss here. I think they will as the home ground advantage leads me to pick Aquinas. Heathe rton travel to Royal Park for the relegation stakes with U.H .S .O.B. This one will go right to the wire and if the recent improvement shown by the Old Boys continues ; think they can win and keep their chances alive . Brunswick make the hike to Mt Eliza and on form should be able to defeat Peninsula . this is not a happy hunting ground for the visitors but a win is a must for a chance at the finals and I feel they can manage it today. Last, but certainly not least, Whitefriars and Powerhouse, section leaders, play the match of the day at Donvale . The Friars form has been excellent and whilst I don't believe they are unbeatable, I think they will be too good for Powerhouse today, especially on their home track .
F T'roop with Peter Hille
Felt like Paul Keating receiving a favourable balance of payments report when I heard Peter Fre nch announce on 3L0 that I'd selected five out of six last week! Let down by, of all sides, Getta's Zedders who did very well to pick up a seven point win at the expense of the Artists who need to scrape the canvas and make a fresh start after looking so promising several weeks ago. Meanwhile, Getta reckons it was so cold at the Art ists' Colony that some of the Zedders were complaining of Blue Poles and a pain in the Jackson Pollocks. The match of the day was a bit of a fizzer with the Students having a landslide victory over the Eagles who haven't landed the money for a month after looking certain finalists . Lat robe's jack-of-all-trades, Peter O'Donohue has the Students' eyes fixed firmly on a premership and, given their current form, anything less would be hard to imagine. I n other matches, the Harry Trotters had eleven points to spare in their clash with the Clays
to give themselves hope of finishing the season in a competitive vein . The Clays, on the other hand, have gc, . right off the boil and will need a lot of rit to ke p th emse 1g ves away rom Lite bottom four by season s end . Uni Redz continued their second revival for the season by finishing well against St . Leonards in arctic conditicr at Patterson River. Old Ca rey had a significant two-major victory over the Doves who need to steady thE selves after two losses . For Old Carey the win virtually guarantees Kelvin Shaw's boys a place in the finai. Their energies can be directed towards how to stop La Trobe . Quarantine and deportation immediately corr . to mind . In the battle for fifth place, the Fainters were 26 points better off than the 'Towners in their big cla_ :,; at Brearley Oval, but the 'Towners did enough to suggest they remain a finals contender . PLAYER OF THE WEEK : A Fenwick Inn voucher this week goes to Old Ca re y's Kelvin Shaw who, as Captain Coach, has given Old Carey a good deal of steel and now has them nicely poised for something differer . a final's appearance. Kelvin also is in the running for the F-Grade Dinner for Two at the season's end . Dor; . forget, if you're in North Carlton, drop in for a quiet able or Guinness at the Fenwick . THIS WEEK'S MATCHES : Last week (5) Current Percentage Accuracy (65% ) MATCH OF THE ROUND : Footscray I .T.O .B. at home to St . And rews. Despite losing three in a row and desp,~_ scoring a solitary goal at La Trobe last week, the Eagles qualify for match of the round by virtue of their ladd position which is keenly eyed by the Fainters. I can't see any joy for the Eagles here and I'm selecting th ; Fainters for the best of reasons - form . Saints by four if it's wet and seven if it's reasonable . In other matches : Despite a good win last week the Zedders won't have enough strength and consistency ;~ stay with the Redz at Albert Park. The Redz have the incentive of staying in finals contention and should pa , well enough to deserve Getta's excellent after-match hospitality . Whilst the Har ry Trotters have been fairly coc . sistent in recent weeks, they'll find the on-ball power and home ground advantage of Old Ca re y to represer about a six goal deficit . The Doves, no longer a certainty for the finals, should be able to account for St. Leonards who have several times been unfortunate to meet teams on the rebound . The Students will probably mak life quite miserable for the A rt ists and despite playing at home, the Clays won't have enough fire-power to hole off a determined Williamstown .

Review of Matches played June 18, 1988, Round 1 0 G SECTIO N Kew, despite very inaccurate kicking were able to post a twenty one point victory over Collegians. Marcellin spoilt my tipping record when Po rt Colts defeated them by ten points in a game in which each side had an equal number of scoring shots . For the Colts the win gave them respite from any thoughts they may finish on the bottom of the ladder. Bulleen Templestowe took the points from Monash Whites who were defeated by ten points. Bulleen Templestowe should have insured themselves of a final's berth through this victory . Old Scotch proved no match for the St. Bernard's side who won by seventy one points . Inaccurate kicking by the Bloods prevented them building a winning margin of more than eighteen points against De La Salle . Old Haileybu ry and Old Melburnians did stage an even contest which Old Haileybu ry won by sixteen points because they were more accurate in front of goal . H SECTION The five leading sides all won to further strengthen their hold on the leading places at the expense of the bottom five sides . St. Kevins, despite inaccurate kicking, had sufficient talent to defeat Richmond Central by twenty five points . Ther ry strengthened their grip on fourth place when they ran out forty two point winners over Balaclava who again kicked a bigger than usual score . Powerhouse failed to score against Old Xaverians while the "Crocodiles" helped themselves to forty two shots and a huge one hundred and twenty seven point victory . C.B .C. St . Kilda maintained their threat to fourth place when they defeated State Bank by thirty six points . G.T.V.9 won on forfeit from Old Geelong .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Leaders De La Salle Blue consolidated their position when they defeated Collegians by thirty six points . University Blues displaced Marcellin from second place when the Blues won their game by thirty four points . In the heavy Bundoora conditions Old Paradians Green proved too strong for Melbourne High School Old Boys as they won by sixteen points after a low scoring game . Bulleen Templestowe recorded a sixteen point victory over Therry which should enable the Bullants to avoid relegation . Old Xaverians widened their percentage lead over Old Paradians when the Xaverians defeated Old Haileybu ry by forty points . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Round 10 produced surprising results and served to heighten the competition for final placings as well as that to avoid relegation . NO rt h Old Boys improved their percentage at the expense of C.B .C. St . Kilda whom North defeated by fifty two points . Bottom team Old Melburnians jolted the University Blacks who fell to the bottom when they lost by twenty one points . Banyule provided an upset and moved clear of the relegation zone when they defeated Caulfield Grammarians by fifty nine points . Old Scotch with a big meritorious victory over Ormond, by fifty four points, moved back into the top four. St . bernards failed by sixteen points to defeat Whitefriars whose bad kicking restricted their winning margin . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 If Monash Blues had kicked more accurately they could have defeated Old Paradians Purple who fell in with a three qoint victory. Aquinas provided the upset of the round when they defeated Old Brighton Grammarians by six points . On the other side of the tour St . Kevins, aided by a great last quarter onslaught, ran out winners by eighty seven points over an undermanned Old Essendon Grammarians . Hampton Rovers consolidated their place in the top four when they defeated De La Salle Gold by twenty one points . Parkside were the side who missed the rainy and muddy conditions because they had the bye . Preview of Matches to be played June 25, 1988 Round 1 1 G SECTIO N Collegians at home to Old Melburnians deserve selection because they have given the more polished performances this season . Bulleen Tempestowe will prove too strong for Port Colts today while I expect Monash THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988 9
Whites to rejoin the winning list by defeating Old Haileybury. St . Bernards should not encounter undue pre ., sure as they defeat De La Salle today. I select Kew to win over Old Scotch today because Kew still can see themselves as a finalist . To achieve this Kew must keep winning . Leaders Bloods travel to Marcellin confident of taking the points . Marcellin players have not tuned themselves for regular victory so I select the Bloods . H SECTIO N St . Kevins by defeating C .B .C. St . Kilda can keep that side out of the four (at least for another week) . As St Kevin's have the more impressive record I select them . Long standing rivals Powerhouse and Old Geeiung. meet on the Ross Gregory Oval . Although Old Geelong's season has had its highs and lows they should have enough ability to defeat Powehouse. Now that Therry has again found the elixer of winning I believe they will be too strong for State Bank today. Although Balaclava have shown a marked improvement over the last two round I select Richmond Central to defeat them today because Richmond will be the more talented team . In a preview of the grand Final the two best sides in the section G .T.V.9 and Old Xaverians meet at Swin . burn Technical School . Neither side has faltered this season and recent form is no real guide as the Xav9ri . ans received little opposition last weel while G .T.V.9 was given a walk over. Both sides have good forwards Pre~. : se for Old Xaverians and a quartet for Channel 9 - Goudge, Louchard, Ebinger and Gray. the game shoulc be well worth watching and as I am forced to select, Old Xaverians are my selection . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Old Haileybu ry should maintain its links with the eladers by defeating Collegians at Albert Park . In a final's preview the two leading sides University Blues and De La Salle meet at the Crawford Oval . the Blues have stars in key positions : forward Houston and Anderson at centre half back who will take constant minding . De La Salle are an even side as their position indicates . If my information is correct the Blues beat Marcellin with a weakened side so how much better can they be today (providing Alan Salter doesn't use the U19's to bolster his sagging seniors)? At home I favour University Blues to win . Marcellin should be able to recapture their winning form today by defeating M elbourne High School Old Boys at their South Yarra home . Therry should be able to extend Old Paradians Green but the overall strength of the Paradians as well as the lure of a final's berth should see the Paradians record a victory. Bulleen Templestow will give spirited opposition to the Old Xaverians . The strength of the home side will test the Xaverians whose light frames may be easily brushed aside . Neverless I expect Old Xaverians to win a hard contest by a narrow margin . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 St . Bernard's travel to C.B .C. St. Kilda where many leading sides have met defeat over many seasons . All form points to a St. Bernards win which I tip to be forthcoming . North Old Boys travel south to play Old Melburnians . Terry Mills will remind his players that today presents a great opportunity for them to gain a necessary percentage boost . I believe North Old Boys have the ability to win this game well . Now that Banyule have found their winning form another victory should come their way today against bottom side University Blacks. Victory should mean the winner will avoid relegation while the losers will face almost certain relegation . Ormond will be anxious to atone for last week's reversal when they play Caulfield Grammarians today. At home I believe Ormond will be talented enough to record a victory . Old Scotch who are at home to Whitefriars will be keen to do well and thus maintain their tenuous hold on fourth place . When the sides met on June 4 Whitefriars won by seventy points . Today the margin will be much less . Although I must select Whitefriars, I am quite confident Old Scotch will make Whitefriars earn the points the hard way. UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Leaders Old Paradians Purple should extend their winning run by defeating Parkside today on their heavy Bundoora Oval . Paradians receive great drive through the height and strength of Pimmental, Joyce and Si!by who should carry the side to victory. Old Brighton Grammarians will appreciate their home soil today against the big improvers M onash Blues whose inaccurate kicking robbed them of victory last week . This game should be a good contest in which many features of our game will be displayed . I lean to Old Brighton to win the game by a narrow margin . St . Kevins and Aquinas should play an interesting and even game. The ruck duels between Julian Sweeney and Manny Pedler will be a highlight while active little men Richard Snell and Ro ry Leavey should provide a close contest as they vie for the loose ball . I select St . Kevins to win the contest because through key forwards Mick Warton and John Foga rty they have sure avenues to goal. De La Salle and Old Essendon played a very even game on April 16 when Essendon won by two points . Unfortunately the Ej sendon players have not maintained that form whereas De La Salle have shown improvement as the season has progressed . Today at Albe rt Park I believe De La Salle Gold will take the points . Hampton Rovers have the bye .

;r,gratulations from 'OTF' to John Fisher and all the boys who won us the Carnival in Launceston . All Amateur can be very proud of the achievement . John fisher ha snow coached the VAFA to three Carnival wins i382, 1986 and 1988 - A mighty effort . ~ .,,., . . . .> .> . . , ,;,i ,ilst on the Carnival it was nice to see the AAFC recognize Victorian trainer Ken Even-Smith . Ken has been -iner since 1982 and he joins nine players and the coach as being selected in the All Australian Party . Well aone Ken . , .,. . .<__,> . . . . . S~iii on the Carnival and mention must be made of Victorian full forward Paul Schuhkraft who kicked 19 goals behinds and two out of bounds (one hit the point post) a very accurate performance indeed . . . .,,, . ., .~, . . . ;~,FA Treasurer and Chairman of Selectors for the "Campaign" Noel Rundle has been called many names during his long association with the Amateur football . However he is unlikely to get away from the "Uncle Fester" rag which the players promptly gave him, for some time . Their rousing rendition of the "Adams Family" tune ~ :d VAFA stalwarts Alex Johnson and Manson Russel in hysterics . Kew captain/coach realized a personal goal when he became the sixth Kew player to win an All Australian Guernsey . Stokes, Joiner, Brayley and Cassells are four of the others but who is the fifth? Ed . 'Victoria failed in only two areas whilst in Launceston, and W .A . thwarted us on both occasions . W.A . skipper Dave Berry won the Hugh Millard Medal as the best player in the Carnival, just pipping Phil Kingston and the VAFA Golf Team led by And rew Langford-J ones also finished runners up to the West . it was great to see four of the VAFA Sponsors in Launceston for the final game . John Camichael (National Mutual, Bernie Hoy (National Mutual Trustees), Tim Grant (Beaurepaires), and Ray Spencer (Four N Twenty) all en'joyed the win and celebrations . Special thanks to Max Wood and Ansett Airlines for making it all possible . NEXT ME MBERS MEETING - MONDAY JULY 4t h

50 GAMES TO STATE BANKER' S David "Wally" Walpole and his off field prodigy Neil "Robbo" Robe rts. Both play their 50th game today against Ajax . Wally is a shy introverted bloke renowned for his nice guy image. He is captain of the reserves and organiser of the social set . Wally always receives nomination for the club's "Down Low", an award . He has taken a little longer than most to register this milestone, let's hope Wally's next 50 are as "colourful" and as spontaneous as the last . Wally's prodigy "Robbo" is, unlike David, an extrovert who delights in entertaining the adoring crowds . The field "Robbo" is a tireless worker who starves his opponents of a possession, let alone a kick . Neil recently ended e 47 games in a row streak, an effort that reflects his committment to his football . "Robbo" is a loving, caring individual sensitive to the needs of his mates and continually plays the "Buddy" role. Well done "Robbo" and may your next 50 be as productive as the last 50 .

â?‘n sure all umpires would like to know what a great job Paul Cherry & Mark Serong did on their behalf at re Launceston Carnival . Both received good reports on their umpiring and Mark surprised a number of the o der officials with his staying power. Well done boys . (Ed .). Keep on bouncin g RON & MIK E It seems the congratulations keep rolling on .This week its well done to Mark "Kenny Everett" Bushfield doing his 50th with us today. Bushy has come a long way wince his days with the Dandenong mob, and this loo~ : like his year Good Luck on the road to your 100th . And they said it couldn't be done but it might have to now . Andrew Belcher is now in 'A' Grade with flags well done Andrew. But can you imagine Roy and Andrew in the same change room, it'll be field and boundary changin in the loo!!! Well done also to Kevin "Roof" Tyler on his promotion to A Grade . The real nickname for Kevin wouldn't be Mary would it??? Don't forget the Association Meeting on the 30th June . Also see Greg "Sticks" Hardiman for tickets to the Station Hotel function on 2nd July. Be quick of you will miss out . When asked who he would like to do his 150th game with, Gary Clancy immediately said he chose Ken Pitcher thinking this was a nice gesture Ken was touched until Gary suggestd that Ken could pick him up and take him to his game seeing that he drove past!! ! The axeman is givng away too many clues . 1 . The first report said he was the "Happy" axeman - & we know he isn't . 2 . No spelling mistakes on this one - who typed it? 3 . Too much about Kingee's jokes !- who ran with him? Come on Sam is it you ?!?!?!? Question from the axeman ) How many VAFA umpires brothers play football for amateur clubs? *(a lot of the losing sides would say "heaps") ! An important message from Benny Goodman . (We all know him, he's the little round Collingwood supporter that loves running & training! ) Anyway! It seems soneone, called Joe Palooka, rings Benny when Collingwood lose and requests help for the old club. His identity isn't known but we do know he is of ethnic origin and occasionally breaks into laughter during the phone conversation . These calls are distorting Benny's face as he heeps looking sideways at his suspects. Keep up the good work "Joe", it's driving him mad! ! PERSONALITY OF THE ROUN D Name : Graeme Thwaites (Humphrey)! Personality Pam "VALE MHSOB's JACK MOLONE " All supporters and players were deeply saddened recently by the news that our most loyal supporter Jack Molone passed away after a relatively short illness. To all who knew Jack he was a gentie and kind man who always put others and their needs before his own. To all of the older brigade at MHSOB who were priveleged to have been a part of Jack's life, we remember him as a father figure to new U19 players who played alonside his sone Neale, tending to their needs and welcoming them into the club. Jack's car was always available Saturdays to transport players to the outer extremities of Melbourne . In later years Jack was a friend to all, a loyal supporter, always the first to attend lucheons and offer financial support a real friend . The loss of Jack Molone is a very sad loss to all who knew and loved him and we convey our most sincere condolences to his wife Betty and our friend Neale. COMMONWEALTH BANK FC SOCIAL NOTE Note to all supporters - Film Night thursday 30th June, Crocodile Dundee 2 . A good night asured for all . FREDDIE "FOU L ' PLAYS 15 0 Todays sees Hampton Rovers U/19 coach Anthony 'Foul' Naumoff come out of retirement to play his 150th game with the club . A bye in the U/19's has given Freddie the opportunity of donning his boots once again . Freddie joined the club in 1976 and quickly developed a reputation as a speedy and accurate kicking rover. His bullet like passes to full forwards are legendary . After a stint of coaching the reserves, Freddie is now enjoying some success with the U/19 . all at Roverland congratulate you on reaching 150 games . Well done Foul . 100 GAMES TO ORMOND's DAVID MCDONALD Congratulations to David McDonald who plays his 100th game for Ormond today. David has played the majority of his games in defence for Ormond . He has been a very solid and consistent defender over the years and was rewarded for this several years ago by gaining state selection for Victoria. The eldest member of the McDonald trio currently playing for the club, David was a member of both the 1985 and 1987 Premiership sides for Ormond . Well done David and all the best today for your 100th game . 50th AT HEATHERTON Congratulations go to Tony Howell who played his 50th game for Heatherton last week . Tony has been playing at Heatherton for the past 4 years and has always been a model of consistency. Tony was a member of our 1985 premiership side with his best on ground performance having kicked 4 goals and taking the mark of the day . Tony is not only consistent on the ground but is also consistent off the ground being a regular at social functions . From everyone at Heatherton well done Tony and we look forward to your next dancing exhibition . OLD SCOTCH Old Scotch Under 19's win over Ormond was the result of an overall team effort . Tony Stubbs returning from the injured list and Charles Parry Okden both relished the muddy conditions . The only blot on the day was the recurrence of Matt McGregor's ham string injury .
