er an entertaining first half Old Xaverians outplayed Marcellin, particularly in the last quarter and so move -, tne Preliminary Final, for a match Coach Danny Cocoran, hopes will be against reigning Premiers Ormon d Xavs started well and if Steve Curtain had kicked accurately would have built up a substantial lead at the first <ak . Antony Callan and Atkins were providing plenty of drive and Peter Curtain was being allowed far too - .ch latitude . Matt Getson was doing well I for Marcellin as were Murray and Cooper across their half back = The second term belonged to Marcellin as they rattled on 4 goals to one They were harder at the ball c:; running well . Skipper Ebert was in everything as were Cooper and Carr whilst veterans Cullinan and Mat t Getson were on top of Steve Curtain and Meehan . After halftime, a very swift goal by Day saw Marcellin points ahead . However at this juncture the game changed . Steve Cu rtain kicked the first of 3 for the quarter, Greetham blanketed Pet rotf and the haphazard "bombing" by Marcellin on ballers, half backs and midfielders , ~,ved the McKay brothers, Marx and Mo rt enson to run the ball out of defence, more often than not in numbers . Xavs by now had complete control across the centre and although Gallagher and Lennox managed to wi n number of possessions their disposal and the lack of flair in their key forwards let the side down . In addition e'< rovers Dann and Beattie lifted their work rate and Tiernan and Meagher were clearly on top despite me good solo work by Sheehan . A third goal for the term by Steve Cu rtain as the siren sounded gave Xavs handy 11 point lead . ny hope of a Marcellin comeback similar to that in the second quarter disappeared, I believe, when Petroff '.no had taken a clever mark missed from close range . The angle was not great and the side had desperately -eded his conversion . From that moment it was all Xavs. Meehan had taken over in the ruck, now agains t Day who had replaced a tiring Matt Getson . Atkins who had the call over Amad for most if not all of the day, antfrom strength to strength as did Paul Curtain who greatly impressed Chairman of Selectors, Noel Rundle his "quick hands". Grummet who I might add had given Xavs great drive especially since quarter time and will be a key factor any future success was now literally marking everything and Marcellin simply did not have the height, strength r in the end pace to stop the Old Xavs onslaught . Steve Curtain finished with 7 .4, Meagher got 3 cheeky real rover goals as did Tiernan and Peter Curtain Ao had been flatened by Grummet when flying for a mark from which he goaled, kicked two . Xavs will be confident they can now go "all the way" whilst Marcellin may still be wondering what went wrong that second half, after producing football in the second quarter that had many, maybe even most, spectators, edicting a Marcellin entry to the Preliminary Final . The Club has had a successful season and willnow be king to its reserves and Under-19 team to add to its collection Premiership flags whilst Xavs will use the weeks =.st to advantage as they ready themselves for the next hurdle . THE SECOND SEMI FINA L Old Paradians or Ormond? Well despite their win in the final home and home game I can't see OPs repeating on Sunday against an Ormond side which will have prepared better for the match which provides a short ut to that "one day in September". There's not much doubt that the final series is an entirely new round and ,hat happened during the season is now history, and therefore Ormond's 19 goal win in May and 13 point ,oss last month will play little part in the outcome of Sunday's encounter . Or will it? Will that loss motivate the 'Monds to a victory? Possibly, although I'm of the opinion that a final, and in particular an A Section second semi is motivation itself to do well, to win and to justify selection in the major game for the year - the GRAND FINAL . Xavs proved last week that a winning goal to goal line at Elsternwick Park is vital for success . As both sid~ have their strengths in this area perhaps the flankers, wingers and on-ballers hold the key? At full back for Ormond David McDonald will have the task of keeping Prichard quiet and brother Mark will have the more difficul assignment at CHB agasint the creative and skilful Mark Beers. In the centre either Fahey, Abrahams or possibly Paul Considine will line up on Russell or will it be McCocl,e Up forward Paul Schuhkraft's pace will worry Brendan Considine, although Tony Canavan will do well on either Ross Tonkin or Carboon . In Short, fairly even from goal to goal . Across the centre, Ormond will pit Kingston and either Sutherland or Gilmore against Tim Bear and I believe Spillane will get the nod on the other side What a clash that could be "Kingo versus Dom". Beare will do well on his wing where his strong marking w ;[ allow another Parade avenue forward . Barnes who may not remember much of the game a fortnight ago shou,u pick up Skerritt . He lacks the Paradian's pace but Skerrit will be constantly aware of just who his opponentis Forsyth may lack Abrahams' skill, but his commitment and concentration for the job in hand cannot be faulted and if he can keep Abrahams quiet he will have done his job . Best has the pace and incentive, if not experience to keep the dangerous Gleeson subdued and although Tim Hille will give away inches to McClements anQ or Grills the Ormond defenders determination will more than make up for his lack of inches . At the other end Schuhkra ft will need help from Mehrten, Jobling, Connell and Cox and if McMahon car, have a day out a resting Taylor will cause John O'connell a headache or two, although I'm mindful of the recent good form of Matt Considine, Mansfield and Wood . It really does promise to be a great game but a doubt or two since prematurely making public my prediction I believe its going to be Ormond's day on Sunday. As for B Section, I believe a pumped-up Parkside will have too much experience and greater incentive than Kew who have, of courese, been to A Grade before. Should Burden have a day off the younger players in the Kew side will lack on-field direction, whereas Bannister can call on Page, Sansonetti and especially Franklin to lead from the front . It too will be a great game . What a pity you can't be in two places at once!

-1 ;~ers deliver the ball very well to Freeman so Bruno will have a huge task . The other task for Kew will be ~ ;.atch Sturgess who sets up plenty of attacking moves from the wing, and of course, for Parkside the one have to watch will be the elusive Haralambopoulos. Pic'~,ing the winner of this match is no easy task, but in what will be a close affair Kew should come out on top. ,,d whilst on Kew, congratulations to Brett Burden who has added another notch to his list of achievements . The award will be a long ti~ s year. B re tt captured the B Grade Best & Fariest by 3 votes from Andy Smythe ;;ay from Brett's mind as he chases his ultimate goal - A Grade then a premiership - if he attains this status ,arely it will be a feat matched by no other amateur footballer (Editor?) We'll let you know ! Some interesting facts from the B Grade vote count . Kew topped the honours with 18 players receiving a total of 74 votes . Notice how closely the votes tie in with the ladder . The top three from each club are also listed . KEW 18 74 Burden (21) ; Thornley (6) ; Kalac (6) THERRY 18 73 Nyman (17) ; Taylor (11), W'Worth (8) PARKSIDE 13 59 Sedgewick (14) ; Franklin (9) ; Sturgess (6) BULLEEN/TEMP 12 53 Smythe (18) ; Tsiotinas (6) ;Farley Harisiou (6) U10NASH 10 54 McGregor (16) ; Sturgess (10) ; Baring (7 ) BLACKS 12 50 Doyle (8) ; Garde (7) ; Cernie (6) CAULFIELD 12 47 Stevenson (7) ; Malder, Matthews, Dickson (4) TRINITY 12 45 Norman (10) ; Ailibon (8) ; Pontsfract (6) FAWKNER 12 43 Busst (12) ; Cohen (5) ; Ross (4 ) IVANHOE 4 22 Castanini (9) ; Corlett (6) ; O'Sullivan (5)

Out at Elsternwick Park last Saturday,a down pour just before the start of play in the first semi, made the conditions quite slipper . However, this did not stop the game from producing some good football . Bulleen/Templestowe, who knew they would have to play at their absolute best to beat Therry, jumped them early and with some great tackling and desperate football got away to a good start . Bulleen/Templestowe led at the first break but half way into the second quarter players like Matton, Nyman and Crotty got their act together and started to take control . Although only 22 points in the final result it could have beena lot more except that Therry missed many opportunities whereas Bulleen/Templestowe were a lot more accurate. Full credit must go to Bulleen/Templestowe who took the game right up to Therry. Therry had too much class for the Bullants.

The highlight of the match was the great dual in the centre between Nyman (G) and Smythe (BT) both played wideof each other. Smythe played a sensational game and kicked some great captain's goals . On the other hand Nyman's performance turned the tide for Therry and had a greater influence on the game. Other performers for Therry were Tyler and Matton and for the Bullants George and Espenchied . Today's game will be more evenly matched with both sides at full strength and one win each after the home and away games . Parkside, who got the points from Kew two weeks ago, are still as confident as ever . They reckon some of the Devil's supporters are so confident that they'll give you goals in! Conversely, Kew will still be smarting about the loss, so they'll be keen to get revenge and win the short cut to A Grade . Parkside are a bigger side than Kew and in fine conditions with their marking power could worry the Kew small brigade . However the wide open spaces of the Brunswick oval may favour Kew's running brigade. The addition of Chris Haralambopoulos will add spark to the Kew forward line . In their last meeting both sides forwards were down and pressure from the backman forced forwards to squander many opportunities . This will be the key to today's game . There will be a number of interesting duals too . Yoksich (P) in the ruck will prove a handful and Schober (K) and Peric (K) will have their jobs cut out for them . In the centre it will be interesting to see what tactics Bannister employs to cover Burden (K) . Unlike last week's centre dual, I would imaging Page (P) will keep a close watch on "Bomber" Burden . The goal scoring contests should produce some good clashes with Sansonetti (P) watching Cavanagh (K) at CHF and Bruno (K) lining up against leading goal scorer Freeman (P) . The Parkside

Old Brighton set the seal on Banyule's incredible lai:e-season crash with a second convincing finals win at Sandringham . After an opening burst of 13 straight wins it was a terribly disappointing end to the season for the Maroon and Blues . Old Brighton for their part were almost no chance of making the finals until St Kilda GBCs shock loss to Thomastown late in the piece - and now they are returning to "B" Grade with today's opponents Old Melburnians. Perhaps the pairing is apt as those two were relegated together at the end of the 1986 season . 'So what of Banyule? Once feared, according to the State coach and former St Kilda star Andy Langford-Jones, 'Ahe Yules looked as if they'd been intimidated by Brighton . They had less committed players and leading lights such as Marcus Franmano and Leigh Holt were down on form . Coach Shane Molloy seems to have lost the gentle art of communication over the last two months and one wonders just how unhappy the end-of-season rest might be. At times in the third quarter it was hard to know whether the teams were trying to qualify for a Grand Final or a World Championship bout . Peter Adams, and Brighton's Jame and captain-coach Mark Sarau also qualified for tribunal visits, and Tuesday nights results will have a big bearing on today's game . Sarau was an unexpected kick-winner in defence and his team-mate's determination is characteristic of the way the whole Brighton team is playing at present . With the fierce sort of mood ruckman Paul Wo ff is in it's no wonder the Banyule boys wre looking about . One might think that Old Melburnians will easily outrun Brighton today, but the same could have been said for the preliminary. OMs won both home and home games reasonably comfortably and would probably expect their top 6 players to outplay their bayside rival's contemporaries . The question is whether the remaining dozen can match the commitment of Brighton's less fabled players, those such as Barber, Waddington, And rew Grant and Farrell who have played major parts in an impressive last three or four weeks . Barber and Webb's duel in the centre could be an amateur classic ; and how the veteran Pizarski at full-back copes with the spring, pace and youth of Cochran will also provide plenty of interest . The following divisions will probably decide much of the issue, however - competition runner-up Best & Fairest Rohan Brown, Jeremy Nicholls, Greg Bradshaw and skipper Andrew Witts for OMs against Paul Wo ff, Peter and Andrew Grant and Pryor. It may well be the veteran Grant's last game (Peter that is) and no doubt he'll be keen to end a fine career in the best possible fashion . Few other teams would be capable of enjoying the rest as much as Old Melburnians. In fact the cynics might say that on previous performances they would be more than happy to have made "B" Grade and that the Grand THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988 3

Final represents just another weekend wasted away from the snow! Today they would prefer a day free r flukey winds their opponents are so accustomed to. Still conditions would also allow them to press their E- a marking advantage through players such as Ed Cordner up forward . OMs are probably more capable of scc ,r, goals from set plays whereas most of Brighton's major scoring opportunities will come from running the b . in the open spaces - P ry or's pace is more electrifying than the average household fusebox, no problerr, Tony Witts, McMullin, Seccull and Mead have all shown good form in OMs recent games and are reasonahl adaptable in case positional changes are required . Again Brighton have the chance to jump even these players at the start, so much are they on the boil . For me, however, OMs have been more consistent and more competent throughout the season and I believe they will win comfortably . If not no doubt I'll receive a few more compliments from ex-President Doug Dick and current one Bill Brown down at the Marine! Now that the violins are screaming at the end of this column's year all I can offer are consolatory crumbs of an Old Haileyburians' premiership - but in the reserves alas . For those of you kind enough to send in a little "fan maiP' in the course of the year, many thanks . I'm always happy to reel in those of you involved enough and silly enough to have taken the bait . The Grand Final at Sandringham today sees the two top sides play off . Hampton Rovers and P reston ended the home and away season with only .01% between them and the result today will be about the same . Both sides possess the ability to win, therefore the side who utilizes their opportunities properly will win the flag . Last week Preston out-teamed and out-ran Bulleen United to be promoted to C Grade in a hard-fought preliminary final . The scores did not indicate what could have been . The Bulls were 20 points down half way through the final team when vital shots at goal were missed . This gave Preston their chance, taking advantage of a better goal line with full forward Garry Phillips finishing off with 6 goals . Bulleen physically moved the ball forward but a lack of cohesion on the forward line was their downfall . Chris Foley ( B.Utd) drew my attention as a real thinker as did Harris on the wing in the final term . P re ston showed their strength to pull away in the final 15 minutes. McVeigh, Yendall and Johnstone were too strong in defence while M ason and Philip were too slick up forward . Wingers Caton and Philip also set up many moves . Bulleen United showed plenty of character to fight it out with Kelly, Green, Harris and Foley being their better players on the day. Now to today's Grand Final - it should be a real thriller. Both sides will line up about the same way as the second semi . To my way of thinking, P reston will have to pay more attention to the Rovers forwards. McConville, Lawson and Hartshorn are very tall, with Panagiotidis very dangerous in the square. Pre ston will rely on McVeigh, Heenan and Yendall to cover them, and hope Mason, B rydson and Phillips can produce up forward . Last week I was very impressed with a tall winger in And rew Philip who used his height and speed to move the ball out of the centre. The Rovers will need to watch him . Who will win - Preston have had 3 hard games on the trot, and to me this goes against them . The final home and away game against the Rovers showed just how good they are. Moving the ball quickly from the full back line with short passes creates their running game . If they produce that form they will be very dangerous. Time will tell as to whether the last couple of hard games has taken the edge off them . On the other hand Hampton Rovers must take full advantage of their strong marking power up forward, and finish of accurately. Their attacking game starts with Peter Wilson on the back flank together with consistent performers Wayne Capp and Brett Hibbs in the centre. The centre line is in fact crucial to both sides as Preston are equal to the Rovers in Caton, Philip and M ason . Rucks and on-ball players are evenly matched, P reston have Turner and Johnstone doing their job while the Rovers will rely on Salmon and Hoggett . These two sides move the ball in very similiar fashion and on the wide open spaces of the beach oval the conditions should be good, favouring I believe, the freshened-up Rovers side. In recent years both clubs have not experienced success in a Grand Final . Hampton Rovers last won a premiership 37 years ago, they need no more incentive to win for their long-time supporters . Preston have lost their last two attempts while coming up through the lower grades, they too are desperate for success . In a great game I select Hampton Rovers to win .

powerhouse sent Aquinas reeling out of the competition for D Section next year with a convincing win in last j Saturday's preliminary final . After three Grand Final type games they have earnt themselves a promotion an d have finally made it to the Big One . A great effort to date and they are in with a big chance on this form . Despite a couple of downpours during the day, the Coburg oval was in very good condition . The selection of these VFA grounds as finals venues must be applauded as the facilities are good for both the teams and the spectators, especially on wet days . I'm sure the fact that plenty of shelter was available contributed to a number of the large crowd turning out to watch the game last week . powerhouse started in fine style and handled the ball and the ground in much better fashion than Aquinas. At half time they held what looked to be an unbeatable lead . The third quarter saw Aquinas show some of the form which earnt them second place on the ladder as they cut the "unbeatable" margin to 2 points at 3/4 time. It was then anybody's game . However, they could not keep up the momentum and the determined powerhouse boys took charge and strolled away with the game . My better players for the House were Hansen, Phillips and Stafford - hard to pick from a good team effort - whilst for Aquinas I thought P. Box, Ca rter and Tarulli did well . It was a disappointing end to the year for Aquinas . After a very good home and away series and missing on a Grand Final spot by 2 points, I'm sure the majority of E Section followers (me included) would have expected them to do better. But, when the opposition are playing like men on a mission, and you can't match them end of ball game. The Grand Final today and what a game it is shaping up to be. Powerhouse meeting every challenge head-on have been most impressive. They've started both finals games to date with a very determined attitude and today will be no different . Although a Tuesday night appointment may have some effect and the toll of three finals may not be in their favour, I'm certain they will be raring to go today . The only question is - can they keep it up? Whitefriars - on top all year virtually, will have enjoyed the rest last week and, no doubt, used the opportunity to do a spy job on the opposition . Their big man strength will stand them in good stead and the spacious Harry Trott will suit their running style . Form over the last few games has been pretty ordinary but Ray Keane will have left no stone unturned to get it right . Good luck to both teams, you have deserved your successes and may you have a good game today . My tip - in a close one - Whitefriars to get themselves their first VAFA Senior flag . (After picking only 1 out of 3 so far in the finals, you could take my opinion with a grain of salt - one thing I do know though is that the Powerhouse boys like me tipping against them .) As this will be my final column I would like to thank the clubs that have helped me prepare this each week . I have enjoyed the expereince but I can assure you I won't be seeking out Rupe rt Murdoch for a job and I don't expect him to contact me either !

month ago Doveton appeared to have called a ceasefire in relation to the battle for premiership honours . ivow, in true Iran-Iraq tradition they are still firing shots and using heavy artillery at that . The Doves were anything ,,,it peaceful in the past two weeks as they've accounted for more victims than you'd find on a pleasant afternoon ;, a German Air-Show. With Mick Wilsons galore creating havoc on the forward line, the Doves more than doubled the Old Carey scoreline . Other fine contributions came from "Rabbit" Warren, "Sally" Atkinson and "Anthony" Burgess. Coach Keith Wilson is to be congratulated on taking his team into E-Grade in 1989 . bVhilst Old Carey would be disappointed with their finals results they should take heart that firstly they had their best season for several years and secondly, with Kelvin Shaw at the helm, are yet to be a force in F-Grade in 1989. Their better performers in the preliminary final were Coach Kel, "Neutral" LeGear and "Good" Evans . Fenwick Voucher to Doveton's "Rabbit" Warren . Grand Final : La Trobe v Doveton at Coburg Oval . The Students have set the pace all year, have humiliated Doveton in their two fixtures and recorded a fin e :,!n in the second-semi . Despite the currently excellent form of the Doves, I fancy the Students to give coach Peter O'D an early Father's Day present to the tune of 5 or 6 General Strettens .

G SECTION REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED AUGUST 27, 1988 Grand Fina l Bloods won the premiership as a result of their superior fitness, strength and speed all of which helped the Bloods outplay Bulleen Templestowe . In the first quarter Bulleen Templestowe had more of the play but due to the close checking and bustling Bloods defenders five Bulleen Templestowe scores only raised one flag . Four goals to two in favour of the Bloods in the second quarter sent Bloods in at half time with a lead of twenty five points . Bloods continued to build their lead in the third quarter when Witty boosted his tally by three goals and Cadman added another following a strong mark. Veteran Lockhart tried hard to life Bulleen Templestowe especially when he booted an inspirational goal at the fifteen minute mark of the quarter. At three quarter time the Bloods had built their lead to forty one points . The final quarter was a repitition of the first three as Bloods again dominated play as they built the lead to fifty three points . A side interest centred on the goalkicking total of Whittey who only managed one in the final quarter to give him eight for the game so that his personal score proved greater than that of Bulleen Templestowe . Congratulations go to the Bloods on their great win and on the high standard of their weekly performances. H SECTION GRAND FINA L Old Xaverians are premiers and champions for 1988 in this section . The 'Crocodiles' sealed these honours when they held St . Kevin's goalless and won the game easily by seventy points . The Xaverians won because they were a much younger, lighter and fitter side who ran two men together for the ball virtually on all occasions . St . Kevins were never allowed to have their game flowing and their failure to kick goals must have further sapped their confidence . Congratulations go to the Old Xaverians on their magnificent season . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 First Semi Fina l Old Xaverians despite having three less scoring shots than University Blues still ran out winners by seventeen points. The young Blues have only themselves to blame as their shocking inaccuracy wrecked any winning chances they may have had . Bad kicking is bad football and the Blues paid the ultimate penalty. On the other hand the Xaverians had a focal point in attack in the person of George Gorozides the section's Best & Fairest winner who kicked six goals in a match winning performance. UNDER 19 SECTION 2 First Semi Fina l After an even first half Banyule drew away from Old Scotch to win their match by twenty nine points . Old Scotch kicked their eighth goal shortly after the commencement of the third quarter and their ninth near the end of left the last quarter. This surely cost them winnning opportunities because Banyule's third quarter inaccuracy the way open for Scotch to steal the game . Big ruckman Bishop was a match winner for Banyule . He was John Kerr at centre able assisted by John turnbull and Parry. None did better for Old Scotch than their captain half back . Forward Monument was prominent in the first half for Scotch but faded due to lack of opportunity . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Second Semi Fina l Whitefriars regained their winning way against Ormond when they won this game by the wide margin of fifty points. Whitefriars was clearly the superior side as they had most of the play in their forward line as instanced by their twenty eight scoring shots to Ormond's thirteen . Congratulations to to Whitefriars for earning the right to complete in Section 1 next season . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 First Semi Fina l Monash Blues defeated Hampton Rovers by the minimum margin to win the right to play in the preliminary final . Hampton Rovers while having more of the play could not capitalise on their scoring opportunities and can attribute their loss largely to inaccuracy . Nevertheless the bustle and pressure applied by the Monash defenders made the made difficult for the Rover forwards . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Second Semi Fina l Old Paradians Purple defeated Old Brighton Grammarians by thirty one points to win promotion to Section 2 for Season 1989 . Congratulations must go to Coach Ian Bibby and his advisors who have developed their side from scratch to its present level despite the movements of players to Club's Section 1 Under 19 side . This

me was evenly poised at half time when Old Brighton held a narrow lead . My match representatives told that once again Old Brighton players tired in the third quarter which enabled Old Paradians to add five goals in~een minute burst . The Old Paradians were able to hold their lead until the final siren . The Paradian gib talanny Pimmental and Glen Sibby won the around the ground duels to give their side first use of th e , H while resolute forwards M atthew Vear, Barry Cousins and Nick M ills all troubled the Old Brighton defenders r'n their creative play. For the losers Smith, Styles & Lade all did well . PREVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PL AY ED SEPTEMBER 3, 1988 U r,1DER 19 SECTION 1 Second Semi Final De La Salle & Marcellin who meet in this vital match at Pitcher Park played thrilling tie two weeks ago in Round ?8. In that game Marcellin had a poor third quarter when they allowed De La Salle to build a thirty one point lead which Marcellin pegged back during the thrilling final quarter. De La Salle must recapture their early game form to enable them to win today . Their star players Captain Damian Toohey, Kruger & Ronchi, have all troubled Marcellin in their two meetings during the season and should prove difficult to counter again today . Marcellin nave been well served by solid half back Patterson as well as the flamboyant Under 19 veterans Chris Maso n d Andy Finnigan . In Peter Randell & Szakac M arcellin have two reliable key forwards who should play leading role in determining the outcome of the game . Marcellin are a big side who could be in trouble if ,he ground has maintained its recent muddy surface . Given dry and warm conditions Marcellin could control iie packs and deprive De La Salle of scoring opportunities . These scenarios are speculative . What is factua l that De La Salle has led the section since Round 7 and that Marcellin has not beaten them in either home and away match. With this record I favour De La Salle Blue to win after a high standard and evenly contested game . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Preliminary Final Banyule & Ormond will contest this game on Oval 15 for the right to meet Whitefriars in the Grand Final and io earn promotion to Section 1 for Season 1989. Banyule who are certainly the form side of the section will approach the game confidently due to the fact they won both matches between the sides during the season ; by fifteen points in Round 9 and by eighty seven points in Round 17 . Lanky follower Bishop, the consistently good John Turnbull and Rohan Hogan can all turn the game in Banyule's favour if they are alowed any latitude . Dale Bottomley at centre half forward did very well until he was injured last Saturday and if fit he should again trouble Ormond while Knight with two four goal tallies against Ormond will be anxious to repeat his efforts a third time. What of Ormond's chances? Their consistently good players Egan, McConvill, Kemp and Walter s ll all again have to do well for Ormond to remain competitive. Today I expect Banyule's overall talent to see it through to victory and thus move their Club to the Grand Final . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Preliminary Final Old Brighton Grammarians and Monash Blues meet today on Oval 4 for the right to gain promotion to Section 2 in 1989 and to challenge Old Paradians for the premiership flag next Saturday . Monash who started their season slowly have gained momentum as they have developed their teamwork while Old Brighton Grammarians have maintained their position at or near the top of the Section for most of the season . Old Brighton's confidence although dented by recent defeats will be bolstered by the fact they have beaten Monash twice this season ; by sixty seven points in Round 2 and by six points in Round 11 . Old Brighton have the more reliable forward line where Templeton has kept up family tradition by regularly kicking goals . He has been ably assisted by Fox and Phillips, while Styles, Dugan and Withall have all played consistently good football . Monash hopes could centre on the stamina and form of Captain Andrew Headberry who is capable of dominating the aerial duels . He should gain good support from the consistent Hyett and Smith . Conditikons which prevail at Albert Park could help Old Brighton more than Monash but can Old Brighton play out the game or will Monash prove too fit for them? As I cannot forecast answers to these questions I select more on safety first and pick Old Brighton Grammarians to win narrowly.

Congratulations this week go to Rod Clarkson who waved the flags for his 100th game with the Amateurs recently . Rod is in his 5th season with us and having has experience in another league says we are the best . Well done Rod . Also on the list and what a year this guy has had . Russel "Rusty" Francis king of the "VG" Stamp . Rust y does his 50th this week which is some achievement considering how long it has taken . Most seasons have not been kind to Rusty as he had hardly finished one ; plus he spent time in Zimbabwe with the Z .F.L . before he got suspended . Never deterred Russel is also our Treasurer and does a great job on the Executive. Well done Rusty! *~* How did Graeme Simpson acquire the title of Chief Ear-ring Finder at the Training College for Firemen . See you all this week at the Station Hotel in Prahran after the match . Dinner is available so bring the wife/girlfriend ; they love to stand around and isten to us talk football! ! *** Whatever happened to the Axeman?? Seems he's had his legs cut from under him . ~** Our own fruiterer "Con" Graham Thwaites would like to thank all the umpires for the support given to him during his recent family tragedy . Our thanks as well Graham for your help to the team at Coburg when one of our members was ill ; you make a great emergency, but get a decent haircut! ! *~* Nice to see our blokes keeping themselves fit but netball? What position do you play Kingy?! ! *~t* Terrific trick at Marcellin two weeks ago when the point post snapped off . John Smith the Marcellin boundary says it wasn't him but he was closest, although he did offer to stand in for the post . It didn't take long for the crew to change the post, they must have known it would happen . What's the rule if the post breaks during a game ?

*** Who was the boundary umpire practising with the ball before the game who smacked himself in the mouth, and spent the whole game whistling blood? ~** Umpires are now 4 : 2 to players our field umpire Steve McCarthy left a player on his back with a neat elbow whilst running back from a goal . It seems the player was on one knee doing up his laces when bingo - lights out .

*** Don't forget to book a table for the Annual Dinner - See "Chili Pepper" Segota . yF~t~r Keep on Bouncing, FAREWELL TO OLD PARADIAN `IRISH' Ron and Mike. A GRAND 150 FOR STICK S Old Haileyburians' Jeff Robe rtson plays his 150t h 15 votes game today in the Reserves Grand Final clash with 14 votes = Banyule. The angular "Sticks" is a third generation 14 votes player after his father David and grandfather Don, 11 votes who played in the combined Old Haileybury-Trinity 10 votes teams of the 1930s . Sticks, however, is definitely a player of the modern era having kicked over 270 goals since his debut in 1979 . This year he has been the 7 votes cornerstone of teh all-conquering Reserves' defence 8 votes at centre half-back . Those long arms and precision 7 votes kicking working to perfection in tandem with a couple of other veterans, "Kingo" and "Ridders". And just up-field there is his fellow 150 gamer, "Noskers". durable, and only a couple of troublesome knees are capable of bringing the curtains down on a great career before it gets to the 200 mark! If the boys win today it will be a case of deja vu, as "Sticks" played full-forward in the Bloods' last premiership team, way back in 1980 as the U19 leading goalkicker .

What a great day it was last Sunday when the V .A .F.A . entertained those 'greats of '38". Twelve members of the 2nd V.A.F.A . Carnival team (in Launceston) attended as guests of the Association and didn't some interesting facts come to light . For instance the official programme listed Hec Rutherford (Ivanhoe Captain) in the party but those present last week advise that'Hec' "missed the steamer", M .V Taroona, and Ivanhoe winger, David Renn joined the side . VC .A . President, and former Black's strongman, Ray Steele responded to Jim Hawkins words of welcome. Ray was voted as the V.A .FA : s berst and fairest player throughout the Carnival and received a handsome trophy which he kindly presented to Jim and the Association . With the Association's Centennary only 4 years away. Ray's cup along with Roy Kline's (Elsternwick) 1935 gold bullion blazer pocket, menu, photographs, etc . will no doubt be the start of a most important collection of VAFA memorabilia . 'OTF' received quite a surprise when after asking Ray who the Coach was, received the reply "We didn't have (need?) one" . Ian Galbraith ("Ike" or "The Train") as team captain was tactician, player and orator ! Ray also informed those at lunch that he "shared" a double bed with not one but two other teammates! One could see VAFA Treasurer, Noel Rundle mentally noting such a move for the next interstate trip but 'OTF' wonders whether today's players would put up with such economic measures ! For the record the following were in attendance Clarrie Vontom (vice captain) Collegians, Wally Taylor (Collegians), Ray Steele (Uni Blacks), Jack Cot (Elsternwick), Jim Standish (Teachers College), Doug Laver (Hampton Rovers), Howard Day (Collegians) . Kline (Elsternwick), Allay R odda ( SSB), Alex G uild (Old Scotch), N orman Batcheldor (Parkdale), Cyri .Cyril Bogie attended on behalf of his younger brother Cam now residing in Queensland .l(Sandrighm) Wemyss (Caulfield Grammarians), Norm McDonald (Elsternwick), was manager, whilst Joe Sharp (Ivanhoe), Joe Meade (Sandringham), Stan Beattie (Brunswick), and Dean White (East Malvern) also accompanied the team . Of interest is that Cyril played for Victoria against South Australia back in 1926 . As far as 'OTF' knows this makes Cyril the oldest VAFA "Interstater", at a very spry 85 ! Apologies were received from Ian Galbraith (Uni Blacks) and Bill R oss (Uni Blacks) whilst Greg Anderson (SSB) is believed to be holidaying up north . Only two players could not be located - Ken Dyer (Teachers College) and Harry Marsden (Malvern) whilst two died tragically on active service - Bill Newton V.C . (Old Melburnians) and Pa t Hoppe (Old Xaverians) . Five other members had died since 1946 . At the end of lunch Ray Steele presented V .A .F.A . General Manager with a donation to the Elsternwick Park Building Fund . The "boys" had a whip around which was a most appreciated gesture . The Mayor of Geelong, Cr. Jim Fidge (former V.A .F.A. Vice-President and Executive Member) kindly acted as a co-ordinator between the Association and Bruce Wemyss, whose idea it was to hold the "1938 Reunion" .. Bruce and Doug Laver, who both live in Grovedale, were brought to Elsternwick Park by Jim and his wife Prue Alex Johnson (Patron and former VAFA President) and his wife Val chauffered "young" Cyril Bogie and we thank Alex, Jim and their wives for their kind gesture . Howard ( Do-Dah) Day came from Bendigo whilst the baby of the team and first rover, Alby Rodda (17 in 1938) sojourned from Myrtleford ! Another guest at lunch was M r. Wal Bright, former Victorian Sheffield Shield and test scorer and Old Scotch statistician . A few years ago Wal took on the huge task of compiling a list of all teams who've ever played in the VAFA as well as the scores from all matches that Association records allow . Over lunch Wal informed 'OTF' that some 90 clubs has once participated in the Association and were now no longer with us . 'OTF' sympathises with Old Essendon utility John McEnroe who was omitted from the list of players who finished third in the 'E' Section Best and Fairest Award . John also polled 12 votes and 'OTF' will discipline the Editor for his oversight ! If there are a few typing mistakes in letters received by Clubs during the week then please spare a thought for the hardworking VAFA Administrative Assistant, Sue Anderson . Sue has followed Hampton Rovers for more than 30 years and has been a bundle of nerves all week as her beloved Rovers prepare for their first senior flag since their A Section success way back in 1951 . Another Club denied of Grand Final Success for more than 20 years is Old Geelong who do battle with Old Essendon today for the 'E' Section reserves flag .

,-,T F' offers congratulations to Doveton SJOC, Power House, Preston Marist Brothers O.B., and Old Brighton i winning promotion to E, D, C and B Sections respectively, for 1989 . For Doveton today is a reallu big day the Club will be appearing in its first ever VAFA Grand Final and in both seniors and reserves . p, .ver House will be playing in a Grand Final for the first time since 1971 when it won the D Section flag from =; =servoir O.B. Power House of course was all set to play for C Section honours in 1973, but as history record s ,is declared Premiers on the direction of the Executive as Fairfield had played an ineligible player during th e 3son, which was an anti climax to the season for the Ross Gregory boys! r ceston MBOB have made steady advancement through the lower grades since joining the VAFA . In 1983 (U/19's), 1984 Seniors. The Club is yet to win a flag, maybe today will be the day ! Old Brighton featured in that thrilling and high scoring C Section Grand Final in 1984 . However its last success as in C Section in 1980 when it defeated Geelong Amateurs by 21 points . De La Salle Blues wins the 1988 Victoria Police Trophy as the Most Disciplined Club in the Under 19 Competition . Runner-up St. Bernards (Under 19 Section 2 ) -i-ird : Monash Blues (Under 19 Section 3) . For more winning tips on the best tyres down under, call Beaurepaires first . PRELIMINARY FINAL - 5 YEARS AGO - 1983 University Blues annihilated Collegians with a 10-goal victory to go into the grand final against De La Salle Old Collegians had no answer to the slick movement of the Blues small men where Yeomans, Kauffman, Jennings, Angel & Kaye reigned supreme. It was a surprise for many when Kew (B) defeated the more fancied, top of the ladder, Old Paradians to go in against Bulleen Templestowe . The 'C' Section flag went to Caulfield Grammarians who proved vastly superior to Parkside whose poor kicking for goal did not help . Best for the winners were M .Sisson, Kanis, D .Matthews, Cooney, Fish, C.Stone . Premiership favourites Banyule did not let their supporters down proving too strong for Fawkner to take out the'D' Section pennant . Fraumano, Attard, Legge, McDonald Jones & Ladd got the votes. Thomastown trounced Old Trinity to be'E' Section champions . Champion forward P.B ro derick kicked 11 goals and was well supported by A .Fellows, K .Steele, D .Fellows, Lindl, Anastasian . F.I .T. & U .H .SO .B . played a 10 .10 draw in the 'F' Section grand final . Caulfield Grammarians lined up as followsBACKS : J .Stone, F.Briner, M .O'Loughlin . HALF BACKS : W.Watson, A .Harlock, N .Matthews. CENTRE : C .Collett, C .Stone(c), M .Sisson . HALF FORWARDS : R .Berzins, C.Cooney, A .Ponsford . FORWARDS : G .Voyage, D .Matthews, R .Sisson . RUCKS : R . Fish (v.c.), J. Kanis, S.Lauritz . INTERCHANGE : R . Langdon, J .Roseman . 10 YEARS AGO - 197 8 Graeme Sim pson appointed to 'F' Section grand final between Thornbu ry & Bulleen United, chalked up his 300th game - including 31 finals (8 grand finals), 1970 'A' Grade Grand Final, and 1978's Victoria v Tasmania game. In a magnificent high-scoring game North O .B . came from 24 points doen at the last change to kick 9.3 to Blues' 2 .3 and go on to meet Old Scotch in 'A' section Grand Final . Best were S .Magui re, Dillon (6gls), Horan (NOB) and Dobbie, Holt, Tyquin (Blues) . Parkside (B) went down 19 .14 to Old Paradians 20 .15 with Howell, P.Johnston, Nankervis (Parkside) and S .Assetta, C.Hughes, DiPaolo (Old Paradians) stars. Premierships were won by 'C' Old Xaverians (from fourth place) 'D' Old Camberwell (also from fourth place) 'E' Bulleen-Templestowe (finished on top) 'F' Thornbury (also on top) J1 North Old Boys, J2 Old Haileyburians . Old Brighton's Graeme Templeton played his 250th game in 'C' Reserve Grand Final - against St . Kilda CBCOC and it was a draw, 8 .5 apiece. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988

V.A .F.A . innovations tor the season : "two umpire" system and the introduction of the interchange rule to replace the old nineteenth and twentiety man concept . Social successes were the President's and Secretaries Annual Dinner at Chaucer's when presentations were made to retiring secretary Jack Fulla rton and his wife Norma, the sympathetic listener over years to club's griveances' and the Best and Fairest Vote Count at Collingwood . 15 YEARS AGO - 1973 What a thriller! St . Bernard's won their way into the 'A' section Grand Final when they beat Ormond with a goal kicked after the siren . Ormond led by 28 points at three-quarter time, but with the wind still blowing strongly, St . Bernard's plugged away until they were only 4 points behind with about five minutes to play . Ormond rallied to score a goal and it looked all over, but St. Bernard's got another and then from a free kick, given only seconds before the siren, goaled to win by 3 points. Best were G .Mahoney, Ginnivan, Burgin, K .Phelan, Schwarzenburg , King (St. Bernard's) and R .Came ro n, Rob Cu rtis, I .Came ron (4 gls), Logan, Kozlowski, Sierakowski (Ormond) . Marcellin held off a strong finish by State Bank to win 8.9,57 to 7.11 .53 and ensure promotion to 'C'. Stars were Wilson, Power, Allen (Marcellin O.C.) and Collis, Robe rts, Jeff rey ( State Bank) . Monash Whites kicked victory away in 'F' section Final - 8 .21 .69 to St . Bede's 11 .4 .70 . Mentions were given to Bradbu ry, P.Ryan, Campbell (St . Bede's) and Tooley, Roth, Woolf (Monash) . 20 YEARS AGO - 1968 'C' Section Best and Fairest was Richard Mannix (Footscray Tech) with 22 points from L . Smith ( Hampton Rovers) runner-up woth 21 points . Caulfield Grammar i ans were too strong for Uni Blues 16 .11 to 13 .15 and gained the chance to have another 'go' at Old Paradians. Atchison was again Caulfield's star, well supported by J. & P. Ho re , and G.Tootell, Sykes, Stewa rt , Collett were best for Blues . U .H .S .O .B.'s inaccuracy, 4 .13 cost them victory against Monash's 7.9. Best Wettenhall, McMaster, Rattray, (M .Blues) and Smith, Joslin, McCa rtney (U .H .S .O.B.) . F.I .T.O.B . won the 'C' Section premiership 11 .8 to St. Bernard's 7.9 . 30 YEARS AGO - 195 8 Old Scotch knocked Old Xaverians out of finals when a great second half enabled them to win by 5 goals and earn the right to play Collegians in 'A' section Grand Final . Old Paradians were far too good for Commonwealth Bank in'B' and would meet U. Blacks in Grand Final . 35

U. Reds run of narrow finals losses continued when ANZ beat them by 4 points . Hampton Scouts in Junior section second semi caused a major upset when they beat leaders Alphington, who had lost only one game previously and that by a narrow margin . University then defeated Alphington in Prelim . Final and lined up against Hampton Scouts in the Grand Final .

What the Coaches Say

Rico h . Th e star p e rfo rmer.

Peter French put the question "Why will your team be Premiers?" to the eight coaches contesting premierships from C-F Section and received the following replies . C SECTIO N Alan Stoneham - Old Melburnian s "We're just hoping we can play well and consistently for four quarters and come out on top . Its up to the 20 guys selected who've worked hard all year as to how much they want it " Mark Sarau - Old Brighton "The fellows have bonded so well of late. Six weeks ago we were a game out of the four and our momentum is going at the right time of the year . The Club is not great in numbers (depth) and so we're binded together. We're in with a chance and don't rely on one player . Going up a grade is great but 10 years down the track you're remembered for winning the flag ." D SECTIO N Ian Rice - Hampton Rovers "I believe we've worked pretty hard during the year . It hasn't been easy and I'm sure the desire is there . We turned the corner in the 2nd semi and played as a team, as we had earlier in the year and I'm confident we can go on from there ." George Tsolanco - Preston MBO B "We're pretty determined and last week showed we can bounce back . We wanted to be promoted and go up as Premiers . We've beaten them twice during the season and although they won the more important game a fortnight ago we're determined to finish off as Premiers ." E SECTIO N Ray Keane - Whitefriars If the players have their minds on the job then we'll be successful . If we play the ball and attack the ball with desperation we'll win " Glyn Evans - Power Hous e "Because we've been starved of a flag for too long at Power House . We're on a roll having in reality come from fifth place and we've improved every game . The boys are extremely confident . They're young, enthusiastic, mean and kean" F SECTIO N Peter O'Donohue - LaTrobe Un i "We'll win not because of our play during the year which is now past history . We'll win because of the endeavour and desire of a whole football club that's been in the wilderness for far too many years, and I'm talking about the double for its the whole club that's involved . We've plenty of respect for our opponents but we want to go into E Section as Premiers, not as runners-up ." Keith Wilson - Doveton SJOC "We've a lot of players with finals experience and haven't really had a full side in all year . I believe we can reverse the season's results because we're hungry for success . We've started to realize its there for the taking and we're playing good disciplined footy and that's what its all about " WHAT THE COACH'S SAID AFTER SUNDAY'S GA M E: Dany Corcoran - Old Xaverian s "I'm happy to get out of it with the win . It was a pretty hard first half and I was pleased we didn't go wide ." Asked which team he'd like to meet in the Preliminary final Corcoran answered "ORMOND" and his best player - winger Antony Callan . Neil Le Lievre - Marcellin O .C . "We fell back to some of our old errors . They killed us at the centre bounce and as the game wore on they exploited our lack of inches at full back and centre half back .
