A Section Football by Peter French
"'Awesome", "Unbeatable" were but two comments from those on 'Knowledge Hill" who were treated to as good a display of Amateur football by Ormond, that has ever been witnessed at Elsternwick Park . The 'Monds' simply steamrolled Old Paradians to advance to their 17th A Section Grand Final . After a very physical first term during which both sides went in fearlessly and recklessly in their endeavours to gain the ascendency, Ormond emerged with a 3 point lead at quarter time . It wasn't until the 171/2 minute mark that the first goal was scored, after a brilliant mark by Ge rvasoni . Old Paradians replied immediately from a courageous mark by Fahey but like many of his teammates he went missing after quarter time . Ormond took over completely in the second term adding 6 goals to nil . They had winners in most positions. In particular Mark McDonald who dominated at centre half back . Phil Kingston was seemingly everywhere. He ran all over the ground, barged through packs to either set up goals or kick them himself and was also prominent in the air. The Tonkin brothers, Craig and Ross both did well . Craig's second quarter was a gem . He combined strong tackling with skills on both sides of the body, a talent he also uses in the summer game . Elder brother Ross was a great contributor too, and after Taylor went off injured he, along with Carboon, rucked well and played intelligently at centre half forward . McA rt hur-Allen had certainly done his homework. Regular winger Gilmore was given the big job of tagging the OP's skipper Frank Gleeson, a task he performed magnificently. Tim Hille and Best showed great versatility and seemed to relish the chance for a run up forward whilst Nash, Forsyth and David McDonald provided run and poise from the backline . Ormond captain Russell Barnes picked up Beers for much of the day and in typical fashion blanketed the Old Paradian's effectiveness . His tackling all day was quite inspirational . What can one say about Old Paradians? They will certainly welcome the return of Powick, Abrahams and Peter Wood . I felt the injury to Canavan early in the second quarter really upset OPs balance . It meant moving Pritchard to defence where he lacked the pace of both Tonkin and Carboon and more importantly deprived the forward line of extra height and strength . It was only when Beare went to the flank in the third quarter where he took four or five strong marks that the OPs forward line showed any cohesion . Paul Considine worked hard in the centre and Mansfield had his share of kicks but in general OPs were too slow, appeared overawed on occasions and allowed far too many Ormond players to win uncontested possession . So Ormond are through to the Grand Final and in the space of a weekend have become raging favourites to win back to back flags. Certainly on Sunday's showing few would disagree. Fortunately there's enough 'old' heads to keep 'young' feet planted firmly on the ground . However one word of caution, the last two A Section flags have both been won by sides entering the Grand Final via the Preliminary ! The Preliminary Fina l Can the Old Paradians regroup and bounce for another crack at Ormond? On their performance last week the answer has to be no. However as they say all year "we'll take it week by week" which means OPs are bound to provide arch rivals Old Xaverians with stiff opposition on Sunday . Looking at the two sides I belive OPs will play Pritchard on Steve Cu rtain, in view of his previous efforts against the Old Xaverians full forward and hope that Canavan has recovered fully from that heavy fall as Grummet's presence at centre half forward poses a real threat . In the centre Paul Considine and Atkins have quite a different approach to mid field play . Considine's pace and team involvement against Atkin's quick hands, strength at the ball and military direction . On the wings Nelson has a chance to redeem himself and will be happy that Callan is not the runner Kingston is, whilst Bea re should return to the wing to pick up Paul Cu rtain where he will outmark his Xavs opponent but may not become as involved in the game and certainly will not link up as well . As Geoff Greetham plays centre half back in a similar way to Mark McDonald who took an incredible 13 mar, -, last week, the choice of Grills or Pritchard as his opponent may not be the answer. I wonder whether they should punt on Brendan Considine or even young Bea re? Abrahams and Powick as mentioned will give the forward line a huge lift and provided they don't fall into the same trap as Marcellin did in the first semi of "bombing" the square those skilfull forwards will come into theu own . In addition they need a big game from Skerritt and some high marking from both Grills and McC!ements . Xavs will again look to its rovers and ruck rovers to open up the game and feed the ball to Grummet and Steve Curtain . Dann and Beattie can expect tougher opposition in this game whilst Meagher and Tiernan will need to work hard against Gleason who I expect has been thinking hard about this game all week and Peyton who to my mind was one who could hold his head up after last Sunday . Either on ba!l or resting where Mansfield and Mick Wood have the height advantage the Xavs rovers can expect plenty of pressure . Another highlight is bound to be the clash between Matt Considine and Peter Curtain . Both thrive on a challenge and hate defeat . Peter may of course be used at half back where many at Xavs . feel hs is best suited . However he does so much constructive work up forward and perhaps more importantly, kicks goals that Danny Corcoran may ignore the helpful advice of the Xavs "experts" . As to the selection it must be Old Xaverians. They will benefit greatly from the weeks rest, will remember their last encounter which saw them 14 goal winners but most importantly have the mobile big man strength in John McKay, Greetham, Grummet and Meehan plus a potential match winning full foward in Steve Cu rtain . Finally a few thought on the B Section Preliminary Final . Ther ry will not doubt benefit from the weeks spell and given fine weather and their unique "non kicking" style will run the Kew boys all over Elsterwick Park . However, Kew will not mind pitting its running style against Therry, as former secretary Graeme McCoubrie reminded me during the week, the Clubs promotion efforts in recent years have not been rewarded with a Premiership and I wonder whether Kew will lift for Burden, indeed for themselves, so that they can have another crack at Parkside? I believe they can, especially as many were in the side that were overrun by Monash last year and will doubtless remember that sinking feeling runner-up brings.

The Sist Report on B Section
OK I admit it . I've underrated Parkside all year, as a matter of fact when it comes to picking anyting to do with the Devils I've usually got it wrong (or is it that I'm the kiss of death) . Last Saturday they looked a very professional u ;dt and turned on a great exhibition of football . In hindsight the fortunes of this game were very similar to the Carlton Collingwood game . The first quarter saw Parkside steamroll Kew, in the second Kew came back but ,n the last half Parkside drew away easily. Who would have thought Kew would be reduced to the more ,nexperienced side. Kevin Segota and Kevin Coughlan had charge of the match which opened up in good conditions at the Gillion Oval, Brunswick . Parkside had the advantage of a 3-4 goal breeze and Peter French certainly got it right, they came out very pumped up and kicked 3 goals . On top of that Chris Freeman was reported, sent from toe field - all within 10 minutes . This unsettled Parkside a little, but still Kew couldn't get their game going and it wasn't until the 25 minute mark that they scored their first major. The highlight of the quarter was an inspirational mark and goal from the boundary by Inserra . Burden's comments at 1/4 time summarized Kew's performance - to stop being preoccupied with the tackling and to capitalize on their opportunities up forward . Bannister on the other hand told his team to keep it hard but clean and be prepared to get the hard ball . The second quarter opened up with Burden receiving a double 50m penalty which he could not convert . The ball came down to Sedgewick who was showing signs of a great game and he passed to Papas who put through Parkside's 5th . The match then changed and Kew got their game going . Undisciplined play by Parkside saw McAlister and Burden goal from frees. Cavanagh took a couple of great marks and goaled . A raking 50 metre kick from Haralambopoulos saw Kew only 2 points down at the half time break . The third quarter saw a desperate struggle by both sides but again Parkside had more purpose in their play and converted at most opportunities . Kew were looking frustrated and with Burden being well tagged by Vincentoria they seemed lost . Their disposal was poor and with the Parkside backline impassable Kew could only manage 2 points. The last quarter saw Parkside on top from the word go - their accurate kicking of 7 .4 saw them run over the top of Kew. 5 goals in the first 10 minutes saw them cement their place in A Grade and leaving everyone wondering about Kew's worst performance in 2 years. Summarizing, Wayne Bannister would be well pleased with his team's disciplined effort . All players contributed and in particular performances from Vincentoria who didn't give Burden a look in and Buckhorn who kept Cavanagh quiet stopped Kew from gaining any momentum . Sedgewick and Sturgess turned in great performances. Inserra who kicked four set the Devils alight on occasions and Cowell the ruckman turned in an impressive display. Kew just had too many players down on the day, their forward line wasn't firing and with Sansonetti the loose man in the backline it was difficult for them to score . The big question today will be - can Kew recover from last week's game? Haralambopoulos did a "hammie" and a number of players will be sore and sorry . Therry no doubt will be raring to go particularly after watching last week . One thing for sure i s that this won't be as physical an affair and both teams will be concentrating on their game play. At least Kew have the advantage of having their Reserves in so they will have more of a pool of fit players from which to choose from . Kew's inability to get it out of the centre last week cost them but if Burden is back there it could make a difference. Nyman like Burden can control the influence of the game from the pivot . This dual will have a significant bearing on the game. The other key will be the defences adn I fancy Therry 's backline with Matton, Quinn, Tadinac and if Taylor can contain Cavanagh, could account for Kew's forwards who were down last week . Cavanagh showed signs and I'm sure he will make amends this week . Although Kew won in their two meetings, Therry did get within one point . this is a very difficult one to pick and I reckon if Kew don't come up fresh it will be a DRAW ! THE BLACK LIST

Unfortunately regular journo' David Southgate missed the last game for the season leaving yours truly to review :vhat was a truly great Grand Final . The large crowd certainly received $4 worth as both senior and reserve matches were decided by a goal . OMs held a 3 point advantage at quarter time and looked more threatening . Nick Johnstone was in everything, McMullin set up two goals and Pisarski had the dangerous Cochrane n check . Although Pryor and Barber were causing Alan Stoneham some concern OMs looked a bit smarter. The second quarter belonged to Old Brighton . The rain seemed to lift their workrate and they led OMs to the ball . With a bit of luck they might have led by more than 3 points at half time, yet it was that sort of game . The Grant brothers, Peter, Toney and Andrew all made contributions whilst Woff's mobility was a problem for Rohan Brown . The third quarter was goal for goal as both sides added 3 a piece including a memorable one from Andrew Grant set up by brother Peter. OMs had reduced the defecit to a point and the result was wide open . Old Brighton supporters suffered when first Pryor and then Peter Grant missed from close in . It was OMs turn a little later when Baglin hit the post . OMs finally hit ten front when Ed Cordner, who had been moved at half time to centre half forward, took a strong mark and goaled and when Tony Witts slid into a mark from a Bradshaw possession at the resultant centre bounce and converted, Archie Salek embraced all those around him . However Old Brighton weren't going down without a fight and when the hardworking Pryor found Allen, the young blond centre half forward gave teh seasiders hope with a long goal . With time on being played desperate defence by OMs kept them at bay and sent the C Section flag to Fawkner Park for 1988. The game was a credit to both sides who put on a great exhibition of Australian football .

Premiers for 1988 Preston MBOB and what a performance. In the space of five years the club has played in 3 Grand Finals and last week's win, their first success - Congratulations . In what I considered a good standard game Preston must have been confident after the rain came down prior to the game. It must be said that Preston proved throughout the season to adapt to the conditions better than any other side, whilst Hampton Rovers I believe were the better side in dry conditions, but lacked the man power in the wet, a weakness they paid dearly for last week . P reston went into the game with 3 hard games under their belt and it was interesting to see their more experienced players rotated off the bench to conserve energy . Their coaching tactics proved successful having a player dropping back to the backline when necessary and their centre and on ball players getting first use of the ball . The pressure of the game finally took its toll on the younger Hampton Rover players to the extent that the game could be summed up by saying, the side that made the least mistakes took the title . Again the pressure applied by the Preston side eventually caused the Rovers to stop and prop and thwarted their normal run on game . Apart from being an all round team effort, better players on the day for Preston were Glen Turner, dominated the ruck duels, giving Ben O'Connor plenty of roving opportunities . David O'Brien, Ivan DeBono and Rick Johnston were solid in defence while up forward Andrew B ry dson was instrumental in many attacks at goal . Ga ry Phillips although held strongly by Wylie Austin was moved to a half forward position and gave flexiblity to their forward line. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988

The Rovers side matched P re ston in the first half only to see fundamental mistakes, like manning up and close checking disappear in the championship third quarter . Preston had gained the initiative and held on in a very tense final quarter. The better players for the Rovers were Mark Young, a superb display of ruck roving and a mention of an inspirational goal in the last quarter, one that brings sides alight . Back line players Wylie Austin, John Mather and Gavin Hoggett put in serviceable games while up forward Darren McConville and Paul Hartshorn tried hard all day. The future of both clubs is very promising . Preston have showed in recent years that success is coming their way and an inclusion of a few players will see them do well next year . As for my beloved Hampton Rovers, they are a very young, tall and ability wise the best the club has had for some time . If they stick together, regroupd after last week disappointment I can see a very promising future for the club . I think it was obvious that an experienced ruckman and class rover is required, if they really want success . Again congratulations to both sides - Preston by a nose in 1988.

The Doves share of the Grand Final scoreline was similar to that of the Yes vote in the referendum as, for the third time this season, they were handed out a hiding by the now Premier team, La Trobe. Congratulations to Peter O'Donahue and the Students on an outstanding season, wherein they set the pace, recovered from a slight falter and played superbly during the finals series . I anticipate that they willalso fare very well in 1989's E-Grade . Congratulations are also due to Doveton on achieving promotion and on taking out the premiership honours in the Rese rves . A fine club effort . A couple of weeks back I mentioned my thoughts on the prospects of the teams remaining in F-Grade in 1989 . I would like to close this article with a thankyou to Peter F re nch for the opportunity to get involved journalistically; to the Fenwick Inn for their generous sponsorship; to players and officials from F-Troop who responded enthusiastically to my articles over the course of the season . I thoroughly enjoyed myself and look toward to resuming in 1989 when once again the columns will come to life with the larger-than-life personalities of 'Getta', `Cess', 'Hinges', `Swanee', 'H .B.', `Leopard', 'Neutral' and `Sinkers' .

REVIEW OF GAMES PLAYES SEPTEMBER 3, 1988 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - GRAND FINA L . Marcellin was the standard hard fought semi final against Marcellin De La Salle Blue triumphed in this highfound teamwork difficult in the opening minutes . Marcellin kicked two first side to settle down at De La Salle eight points lead at quarter time . De La Salle goals to one in this quarter which enabled the Eagles to hold an were able to continue to build their lead which players lifted their game during the second quarter but Marcelin teamwork improve and the players were totalled thirteen points by half time . The third quarter saw De La Salle . In retrospect Marcellin lost the able to overhaul Marcellin and move to a five point lead at three quarter time game in this quarter because they were only able to kick two minor scores . The last quarter saw the backlines less than goal between the sides continue to hold sway over the forwards . For a lot of the quarter there was denied Marcellin fought back only to register until De La Salle managed to kick a goal late in quarter. My match representatives have told me and now challenge Old Paradians Purple Although that although early rain made conditions slippery the game lacked the normal lustre expected from a final . Monash . had control of the ball more than did Old Brighton both sides kicked inaccurately the scores reveal that Stevenson and Styles, while none served Monash Brighton's best players again included on ball prime movers better than Captain Andrew Headberry . PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED, SEPTEMBER 10, 1988 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - PRELIMINARY FINAL meet today at Parkside to decide who will play De Last season's Grand Finalist, Marcellin and Old Xaverians . Honours have been even between these sides during the Season as Marcellin won La Salle next Saturday won in Round 15 by twenty nine points . From what while Old Xaverians their Round 6 game by forty points favour whereas Old I have seen during the season the height and strength of players will be in Marcellin's Patterson will have towork closely defenders led by The Marcellin . should have the edge in agility Xaverians to thwart the dangerous Xaverian forwards Go rozides with their "on ball" players and centreman Andy Finnigin achieved in stopping this pair could well decide the outcome Marcellin The degree of success and Connors . out all the game . Other of the game as I doubt if the Xaverian defenders can hold Randall, Szakacs and Duck Gazzola Marcelling players who trouble Old Xaverians in home and away matches included Hewitt, Beattie and who will need to be closely checked today to prevent them creating opportunities down the ground . Conversely, quiet in either home and away game so this Marcellin players were unable to keep Bailey, Dalton and Quilty to be one worthy trio's confidence will be high as they approach today's game . The game which should prove to have won of a final will test both side's durability and talent right to the final siren when I expect Marcellin the game because of their superior strength and size . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 - GRAND FINA L who are buoyant with confidence to decide the Whitefriars, with only one defeat this season, face Banyule Banyule by one hundred and sixty one points annihilated . Whitefriars . Coldrey Cup for 1988 .H winner of the F . Not at their first meeting this season and they then had one hundred and nineteen points to spareby in forty Round when they won decisively six7points Whitefriars became the only side to topple Banyule to be denied Banyule level of fitness as they attemp t in Round 18 . Knight of their drive. It will be a major task for Whitefriars to stop their creativity as well as preventing Bishop, whether in defence or attack will pose a threat to Whitefriars and the Par rys from starring . Dale Bottomley premiership hopes. For Whitefriars to win their forward line must function efficiently, with the consistent Strike Brothers, Rowan and O'Brien all having proved consistent goal kickers and worries to Banyule during the can nullify all four for the whole game . Add the brilliant play of Phillip, season . It is difficult to see how Banyule Jenkins, Bateman and Houston who have all impressed this season and it is easy to see why Whitefriars have had such an impressive season . To forecast the winner is no easy matter and after considerable thought I have hundred minutes on the big ground selected Whitefriars because I doubt Banyule's stamina to run for one and because their goalkicking accuracy has been astray. In addition Whitefriars forwards have been more active and accurate . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 - GRAND FINA L The two leading sides, virtually all season, Old Paradians Purple and Old Brighton Grammarians play off nine points after coming from four for the premiership today . Old Paradians won two weeks ago by twenty points down at the long interval . This fact again brought into question Old Brighton's match fitness which was believed to be lacking when the sides met at Bundoora in Round 13 . Brighton players will be suited by the firm Ross Gregory surface while the Paradians too will appreciate being able to run on a hard ground after their experience in the Bundoora mud . Big ruckman Stevenson and talented rover Styles pose a big threat to crowd their forward line . Templeton, Ryan and to Old Paradians especially when Stevenson drops back fitness will have a Lade all have proven dangerous on the Old Brighton forward line conditions and match big bearing on the final result as Parade will be banking on ruck numbers in Tim Livy, Joyce, Pimmenthal and Silby to tire Stevenson and win the ball for runners like Kirwan, Stendl, Donoghue and Cousins . David Cousins and Matthew Vear have proven consistent goalkickers who will need a minimum of opportunities to produce maximum results. I know the Brighton supporters believe their players can win the club's second M .G . Russell Cup but as I cannot forecast the weather conditions nor the match fitness of the players I believe Old Paradians Purple can win the premiership and thus prove they have been the best side in the competitin in 1988. The Paradians move the ball with speed and certainty and must enter the game with confidence in their ability to win .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1988 11
VAFA scoreboard operator, Phil Hope was on the ball last week. Not only did he keep patrons updated with VFL Park scores and race results but he also reminded them to vote ! Two interesting observers at Sunday's A Section 2nd semi-final were Carlton legend Bruce Doull supporting former Carlton team mate, now Old Paradian's coach John O'Connell and Melbourne's Jim Stynes who popped into to provide encouragement for fellow countryman Paul Fahey. Poor old Peter Wiseman created history last Sunday, according to Norm Nugent that is, as the first field umpire to be carried off in an A Section second semi-final . Peter injured his ankle in the final quarter and was replaced by emergency Russell Francis . OTF hopes Peter's injury is not too serious, as we felt he was going a grat job and it would be a grat pity if injury prevented him from being selected for the A or B Section Grand Final . OFT extends hearty congratulations to the six clubs who have won flags to date : Old Xzverians (H), Bloods (G), back to back, LaTrobe University (F), their first since the Blacks won in 1976, Whitefriars (E), their first senior pennant, Preston MBOB (D) likewise and Old Melburnians (C), their 10th senior flag and second in C Section . There's no holding Old Melburnians secretary and VAFA Members, Simon Derham . His wit and laconic anecdotes have amused Members over the years and having congratulated Monash Blues and Kew last year on their success he thought it time at last Monday's Members meeting to indulge in self congratulations following the OMs Premiership. VAFA President, Jim Hawkins was quick to qu p"I'm pleased to see you're able to stand SIMON!" VAFA AGM, MONDAY, DECEMBER 5TH, 1988 AT ELSTERNWICK PAR K Finally for this week OTF congratulates Parkside who have been battling since 1938 to reach A SEction and did so in such fine style last week . Parkside's entry to A Section next season will bring a refreshing change to the competition . With De La departing after 13 years and Therry a chance to join the `Devils', it will be the biggest upheavall at the top of the tree since, well since when? Bulleen/Temp arrived for the first time in 1985 but OTF asks readers when was the last time two clubs reached 'A' section at the same time having never been there before? A Slab of Fosters to the first correct entry to OTFs finals competition .
It's not often that they get thanked for the misery they put on us, but today we will thank them . Many thanks to our training staff Pat "Smiley" Bowd and the "living legend" Benny Goodman for all their efforts this year in firstly getting us all fit then maintaining our fitness as the year drags on . A lot of shapes have changed over the season and some umpires have even noticed their shorts fit . Not a bad effort to get over 100 people with different attitudes to training in the one mood (?). The finals and the performance by the umpires in them are testament to the good job done by Pat and Benny . Thanks to you from all the umpires (and 14C .) **~ Why are they calling Cameron Swale "Mirrors". Some of our loyal supporters accuse umpires of being blind but how on earth could that bloke behind the fence have come up with calling Kevin Segota a "white jelly bean"??! ! *ir* Speaking of loyal supporters. Long time umpires friend Ric Sykes from Powerhouse has invited all the umpires to drop into his new pub, The Cricketers Arms in Port Melbourne, even Andrew Belcher. Ric assures us his fridge and colour T.V. are still working!!
**~ It could only happen to the "Handshaker" Gary Clancy. After a final at Coburg Gary stands under the shower with goalies coat in one hand and trousers in the other . When asked about this odd behaviour he insisted it was normal and only to help his mum by getting the mud off . Peter Harris swears that when he stuck his head around the corner Gary was on a spin cycle! * ~F ,t
The goal umpires are a very happy bunch these days so it must be the training, though we haven't seen the eggs and spoons out yet . Apparently they are doing aerobics this week and anyone can watch . Competition must be strong though as a few goalies have been seen buying Kevin Barker beers . ic~c~t Many thanks to Old Scotch for the loan of their jumpers for our big match against the V .F.A. We thought that red jumpers wouldn't show the blood!!!Don't miss it!
Keep on bouncin g Ron and Mike .

A GRAND 50 FOR STYLSIE All at Old Brighton congratulate James Styles as he runs out for his 50th game in today's Grand Final against Old Parade U19 . A pint-sized rover with tons of courage, he throws himself under the biggest packs all day. His fearless efforts do not go unnoticed as he captured the U19 Best & Fairest in 1987 and this year was runner up in Section 3 voting . We all wish him well today and for the next couple of hundred gutsy games. Well done Stylsie.

From the Amateur Footballer of that year Geelong back in 'B' Section, were disappointed at their first game loss by 93 points to Old Melburnians - 'a stalwart absent is Lindsay Hassett in England with Test Team' . MHSOB in 'C', had a day out on 30 April defeating Glenhuntly 41 .24 to 8.13. It must have a hail of goals in the first team, 14 .9 to 0 .0. Len Boyd-Gerny kicked 19. Charlie Laxton, former star Collingwood rover, will deliver an inspiring lecture at Youren's Hall, Fairfield on Wednesday evening next before players and officials of the Parkside Club. It will take the form of a pie night . While Hampton Rovers were holding their Dance in the Scout Hall, No rth CBC Old Boys monthly dance was a little more up market at Melba Hall, University of Melbourne . Fred Coldrey ( Hampton Rovers) has filled the role of boundary umpire with distinct credit for 5 years . Uni Blacks, with Alan Hamer and Ian Galbraith, strong at half back, and supported well at full back by Ray Steele, retained their position at the head of the ladder after 11 games with a strong win against State Savings Bank . Full back, Jim Kennon, was outstanding at full back for Old Scotch .
Stan Mullany, the Editor had received many invitations to attend Social functions arranged by clubs, and when possible was taking the world's record-breaking marathon cyclist, Ossie Nicholson, to give a roller demonstration . The carnival was in Launceston . MHSOB complained that it was the only undefeated team in the competition and yet there was no MHSOB player in the side. Hampton Rovers boasted that for the third season in succession the sole interstate representative from 'D' Section was a Hampton Rovers player. States playing in the Carnival were Victoria, South Australia, West Australia, Canberra, Tasmania and New South Wales, with Victoria the victor . Victoria beat Tasmania by 13 goals, South Australia by 8 goals, and New South Wales by 6 goals . Victoria's best player at the Carnival was Ray Steele (U . Blacks), while Alby Rodda (State Bank) and Wally Taylor (Collegians) won trophies against Tasmania and South Australia . In 'C' Section, MHSOB notes 'Alex Johnson made a dramatic debut at full back . This youngster used his great judgement and dash to wonderful advantage, marking the ball in the packs with mighty leaps'. U . Blacks beat Ormond, and State Savings beat Collegians in the series. They could certainly kick in those days, as SSBs notes stated 'The goal kicked by Alby Rodda from 130 yards out was the best ever seen on th Elsternwick ground' . The Blacks won the first of six successive finals, 1938, 39, 46, 47, 48, 49, (no competition, 1940-45) .
What the Coaches sai d Mike McArthur-Allen - Ormond "Ten minutes before half time it looked as if one side would crack and fortunately it wasn't us . We knew that they had to come at us hard in the third quarter and the performance by Ormond in starting so well broke them and enabled us to win it ." John O'Connell - Old Paradians "They were just too good . They killed us . Thankfully we've a second chance to regroup and go again" Wayne Bannister - Parksid e "I was worried at half time because we'd done some stupid things in the second quarter . I told the players at half time to forget about the umpires and concentrate on the football . I also think that Tony Roydon's appearance and help both pre and mid season was telling . Our teaming in the second half was particularly pleasing" Brett Burden - Kew "They were more aggressive at the ball and simply overpowered us . We're all pretty disappointed but don't write us off yet . Today's a different game and lots of us have plenty to prove to ourselves and our supporters . "

MARCELLIN MILESTON E Marcellin OC congratulate Tony (The Feral Cat) Paatsch, Peter Sheehan and Andy ( Bucket) Maher, all having recently played their 100th game for the club. Club Vice-Captain, Tony Paatsch had endured a frustrating season of injuries but his commitment to the Marcellin cause has never wavered . Always an inspiration, `The Cat' has thrilled Eagles fans with his high marking and rugged straight ahead style of play - recently engaged to the lovely Louise, Paatschy has set the example to younger Marcellin players . Pete Sheehan played his 100th in the 1st Semi against Old Xavs and what a game he played . A true gentleman, Peter, as his mates call him, runs faster sideways than he does forward . A snappy dresser, Peter is also adept at sinking a Scotch or two and generally shouts, when asked . Andy Maher is a legend at Marcellin, renowned for his lively commentaries on and off the field - he has finally reached his 100th game. A goal kicker of considerable repute, Andy can also double as compere on Revue Nights - a man of many talents indeed . (PS word is that he is an excellent organiser of Footy Trips .) All at Marcellin congratulate this fine trio.
