University Blues provided the opening round shock with their win over last years premiers Ormond Uni Blues win did not surprise this football scribe (I had inside info from 'Mr Smooth' Tony Schlicht, and we .now find Ormond have lost their opening match 3 years in succession) . What a difference a good big man makes, and the Uni Blues have got Mike Yandell back from round Australia, and what a game he turn in, giving the Uni Blues first use of the ball all day in what was a tight game for 3 quarters, before Uni Blues kicked 5 goals in the last quarter. The half forward line of Ormond was non-existent, and changes will be made next week . Uni Blues contested every issue all day and `Mr Smooth' Tony Schlicht performance on keeping Pau l

Schuhkraft to 1 goal was an excellent performance (my words, not his) . Mark McCa rt hy last year U19's player gave Uni Blues excellent drive from the centre, and with the dominance of Chris Taylor (ex Fitzroy) whether playing C .H . Forward or C .H . Back were the main reasons Uni Blues recorded a good win . Ormond would have been pleased with the effort of Scotty Taylor in the ruck, who contested well, but lowered his colours on the day. Ormond can expect improvement from Dean Adams, whose debut in A Grade was unsuccessful (to say the least) . Russell 'Maddog' Barnes once again tried his heart out, he really is inspirational, and the better name players at Ormond should respond to their captain's dedication and discipline . Old Paradians turned in a great team effort to beat a disappointing Old Xaverian side. Old Paradians with captain Frank Gleeson sidelined with injury really had an open forward line with no fewer than 12 players kicking goals . David Way's (Collingwood) ruckwork was the major factor in Old Paradian controlling the game, and their direct approach to goal was a feature . Daniel Meagher and David Taylor turned in an excellent game for Old Xaverians, but too much was left to too few. Collegians did well to beat North Old Boys in blusterly windy conditions at the Harry Trott Oval . The Lios with two good forwards, Ray `Mr Golf' Berzins and Jimmy Bennett (Hawthorn/Fitzroy), both kicking 4 goals were the difference between the two sides . I was very impressed with youngster Damien Phillips in the ruck for the Lions, and he played a major part in the Lion's win, North Old Boys only kicked 3 goals after half, time, with Bruno Conti being top goal kicker with 4 goals . Shaun Hoffman was judged North Old Boy's Best . Coach Mark Hannabe ry would be looking forward to a better showing against a disappointing Parkside next week . Old Scotch turned in workman like performance to beat a disappointed Kew . The Cardinals were too tall and too talented for the boys from Kew. Justin Hart was superb and with regular good players John Moir in ruck, Captain 'Robbie Fuller' controlling the back line also a good performance from full forward Craig Perkins who bagged 5 in windy conditions . Kew would have expected more from recruits Peter Burke and Dallas Moo re who seemed lost with the pace of A Grade footy . Tim O'Kayli turned in an honest performance, but more was expected from Captain Brett 'Bomber' Burden who tried hard all day, but had no luck . Kew can improve, their full forward recruit Brett Fitzpatrick did not play, which left the forward line of Kew disorganised with Neil Duncan (3 goals) the only Kew player to bag more than 1 goal . Marcellin thrashed a very undermanned Parkside in a one sided display that showed that the promotion from B to A Grade might be too much for the Red Devils. Marcellin kicking against the wind in the first quarter held Parkside to 4 goals, and from there the match virtually ended . Marcellin piledon 9 goals in a great 2nd quarter, holding Parkside goal-less, in fact Parkside only kicked 1 more for the entire match . Joe Amad celebrating his 21st birthday played a great game, kicking 4 goals . Captain Matt Getson and John Origlasso controlled the ruck against a Battling Nick Mitchell from Parkside . Mark Delahunt did a fine tagging job on Garry 'Cent re fold' Williams, which forced the Parkside Coach Wayne Bannister to take Gary from the ground . Ten Marcellin players contributed to the goal tally, which would have been higher except for Terry Franklin who played a fine game at full back for Parkside. Marcellin President, Ray Walsh was very pleased with the Marcellin performance and expects a fine year. Parkside with 15 senior players missing either injured or suspended can only improve (I hope) . Now to today's games. The match of the day between the Blues and the Lions. It will be a battle of the big men . Blues Yandell against The Lion's Phillips, I expect ex state player Yandell to give Uni Blues first use of the ball, and their all round experience to give them the points . Key players to watch : Yendell, Taylor, McCarty for the Blues, against Phillips, Bennet and Berzins for Collegians. In other games Marcellin to make it 2 in a row against Old Scotch at Bulleen . However if Marcellin Can't control Moir in the ruck the game could go the other way . Thus a big test for Matt Getson . Old Xaverians at home to Ormond hardly oozing confidence, and I expect Ormond to bounce back with a win against a young, inexperienced Old Xaverians side. Kew disappointing last week are at home to Old Paradians, and I expect Paradians are odds on to win again . North bid Boys to open their account with a win against Parkside . I lean to No rt h as Parkside are still a few weeks away from having a competitive side. P.S . No rth OB have never played Parkside in senior amateur football .

B Section by the "Bucchan Brothers " Peter Grant and Doug Dick

The "Buchann Brothers" have already proven that they shouldn't be listened to after only predicting two winners from last week's games . The round saw the newcomers to B Grade experience mixed fortunes with De La Salle and Old Brighton winning and Old Melburnians and St . Bernards going down . New coaches at De La Salle, Bernie Dunn and Peter `Happy' Hannan, must have been pleased to get the points on the board first up. Players Wright, Davey and Mullins proved to be the instigators of De La's 30 point win over Old Trinity, who were far from disgraced . Farrell, Rogers and the ever reliable O'Shaughnessy, battled hard for Trinity. Old Brighton put in a strong performance against Fawkner, who struggled to come to terms with the windy conditions at the Beach Oval . Lindsay McMahon, back from a stint with Ormond, was a match winner in the ruck as was Waddington who snared seven majors . Skipper, Brenden Saggers performed well for Fawkner as did Cavanagh and Brown . St . Bernard's found the going tough against Bulleen-Templestowe, narrowly losin by nine points . Veteran, Andy Smythe, put in another great game for the visitors and was well supported by Osborne & Mayne. St . Bernard's found goals hard to come by with S. Walsh, G . McAllister & Purcell trying hard . Old Melburnians must have thought that 'B' Grade was easy after kicking goals in the first quarter against Therry with veteran Richard Cameron, snagging four. They soon came back down to earth in the last three quarters and failed to add another goal . (Perhaps Allen Stoneham was left wondering whether pre-season training was too easy!) . Therry had a trump card in Zanett i who kicked seven and was supported by the consistent Crotty and Toohey. O.M's best were familiar faces, Andrew Witts, Jeremy Nichols and Bradshaw. In the battle of the "ook-worms", Monash Blues out thought Uni Blacks to win by thirteen points in another close game. John Quin did not let his coach down along with Baring and Brad "Disco" Cornwell . For the Blacks, the reliable combination of Heath and Garde performed well . This week's clashes see Old Trinity travel to MOnash . After a strong performance last week against 'B' Grade favourites De La Salle, Old Trinity should take the points . Ther ry will be keen to knock-off ex coach Bernie Dunn, but the strong De La Salle combination should take the points on Sunday at Elsternwick Park . Bulleen-Templestowe should be too strong at home for Uni Blacks. St . Bernard's trek to the Charles Mutton Oval to play Fawkner, should be an interesting affair with both sides keen to open their accounts . St . Bernard's should win by a whisker. In a replay of last year's 'C' Grade Grand Final, Old Brighton will travel to Fawkner Park to play Old Melburnians. Old Brighton will be keen to reverse the result and Old Melburnian's will miss the experience of Freeman and Dawson . After three wins last year, its about time Brighton turned the tables .

THE

AMATEUR

The opening round of the season got under way in good conditions with the wind affecting most games . Strong wins to Old Haileybury, Banyule and Hampton Rovers has set the pace, and a surprise poor showing by Preson after unfurling their 1988 D grade flag . Making predictions can be dangerous . One Kira Harris, staunch supporter of Old Ivanhoe took a disliking to my comments last week about her club being a candidate for relegation . At least you told me to my face, didn't you Kira . Last week Hampton Rovers made a good return to C Section with a strong all round display . After an even first half the Rovers showed too many skills, the taller players in Mathew Salmon (ruck) and the backline players LeGrand, McConvill and Austin were too strong . Clever play up forward by young players Danny Patt, Craig

Amoore and Jamie Ross gave Alf Panagiotidis every opportunity with 9 goals for the day . Old Ivanhoe showed good marking skills but lacked direction, today at home they will improve . A solid performance by both Caulfield and Balaclava saw the closest game for the round . New captain Bernie Rafferty lead by example to keep Balaclava in the game. Hayden Dickson in the ruck and Tim Hill roving tried all day, while up forward Andrew Hill finished with 4 goals. Caulfield fielding a new look combination had twelve of their previous year's U19s list, which all goes well for the future. In an evenly contested game, Caulfield's younger legs and enthusiasm saw them victors by 12 points . A fine overall team performance with Millard, Boston, T. Royals and Stone being their better players . Ivanhoe started their C Section campaign with a strong win against St Kevins . The game started at a fierce pace despite a strong, gutsy wind diagonally across the ground . Better play into the wind by Ivanhoe enabled them to come home in the final quarter and win by 45 points. Best players for Ivanhoe, G . Bullen, R . Armstrong, Rawley, Lengacher, Rose and Witchell . Maybe David Southgate got off the wagon a year too early. His beloved Old Haileybury look the goods this year - so far. Last week the Bloods won in most positions all day. The game was rapt up in the second quarter when they kicked 10 goals . Strong ruck work by David Fletcher, seven goals by Gary Phillips at centre half forward, creative play by Andre Walden and strong marking by John Bingham was too overwhelming for a disappointing Preston . I believe Preston are better than that and will improve today. Five goals by Phillips was creditable, while Richardson, Turner, Brydson, Mason, Caligiuiri and O'Brien were the better players. Banyule showed faith in my predictions last week by soundly defeating St Kilda CBOC and giving early notice that B Grade is their rightful spot . St Kilda could manage only catch up football with Riddell kicking 4 goals for the Saints . The match was played in excellent conditions at Elsternwick Park . The Bears persisted and outplayed St Kilda for the entire game. Sensational players for the Bears were Stephen `Hoota' Gray who ran riot on the ball and Craig `Filthy' Stevens whose long raking left foot kicks from the backline set up many scoring opportunities . After selecting five winners last week we come to today's games . Old Haileybury at home will prove too strong for Ivanhoe . Balaclava will register their first win at the expense of St Kevins. St Kilda are better at home, particularly when its windy . The North Rd ground must be played to positin, and home ground knowledge will let them sneak in against Preston . Old Ivanhoe will imrpve today, but on early form Banyule for mine. Down at Albert Park, Caulfield will be at home to Hampton Rovers . Both clubs are fielding young sides . George Voyage, coach of Caulfield and a long-time player of the club, will attempt anything (knowing George as I do!) but the Rovers to take the points in a close one - Sorry George . TODAY'S SELECTIONS : Old Ivanhoe vs Banyule St Kilda vs Presto n Caulfield vs Hampton Rovers St Kevins vs Balaclav a Old Haileybury vs Ivanho e

Next door neighbours, State Bank and AJAX clash at Albert Park in what should be a close game . Banker's coach, Ken Bremner, will remember only too well how dearly early season losses cost them last year . But Ajax have other ideas with club "oldies" like Briskin keen to see them rise back up the grades . Another close game in store with Ajax just favoured to get the points .

Elsternwick and Old Mentonians renew friendships with another contest at the No . 2 Oval . These 2 clubs have met many times over the past few seasons with honours just in favour of the Panthers . The Wickers new coach, Steve Huckett, will be keen to win his first home game, but first round results suggest that Mentone should have another good win taking them to the top of the section ladder. The last game is the most difficult to pick . MHSOB had some great pre-season form but couldn't repeat it last week, whilst Whitefriars did exactly the opposite . Could these two be the inconsistent teams of the secton and continually provide problems for the tipsters? It's a toss of the coin, but the Old Boys and coach Tony Short get another chance and should just get home in a very close game. So, selections are (in bold) : Powerhouse vs Bulleen United Thomastown vs Old Camberwell State Bank vs AJA X Elsternwick vs Old Mentonians M HSOB vs Whitefriar s

E Section by Kevin McNichol l

The first round is behind us and while some of the results were predictable the round produced the odd turn up and one or two close results . The rain had stoped and so conditions were quite good and produced some excellent football . Closest match of the round was between old rivals Doveton and Heatherton with Heatherton running out winners by one point . The other close encounter was between West Brunswick and St . Bedes where the visitors proved too strong for Wests and ran out winners by 16 points. Surprise of the round was Brunswick's great win over the much fancied Old Essendon . In a hard tussle the long break saw the sides even and the stage set for a thrilling second half . Brunswick seemed to settle down to the pressure of the situation and went to outscore Old Essendon and finish comfortable winners 136 points to 53 points . La Trobe started the season well with a good win over an undermanned North Brunswick and while the game could have gone either way at half time a great third quarter by La Trobe set the home side up for a resounding win . Interesting to see St . Andrews and "F" Section leading goal score for the last three years, Terry Wilson, lining up for La Trobe - in the Centre! As expected, Aquinas proved too strong for UHSOB at Royal Park and look certain to be strong contenders this year while at Como Park Old Geelong started the season on a high with a big win over Peninsula . Today's matches should throw a lot more light on the picture as sides settle down and should perhaps let us see just who the strong sides will be. This round sees last week's winners all drawn against each other in what promises to produce a feast of good football . Aquinas play host to a rejuvenated Brunswick who will be keen to prove that their win over Old Essendon was not a fluke. Old Geelong journey to Heatherton and should provide another great contest . New-comers La Trobe travel down to Mentone for the clash with St . Bedes and will be anxious to continue their good work with the home side equally determined to sop them . Match of the round could well be the clash between last years finalists Old Essendon and the other new chums, Doveton . Old Essendon will want to atone for last weeks shock defeat while Doveton will also be smarting after the 1 point loss last week. West Brunswick travel to Peninsula and this clash should also prove a thriller with the sides sitting eighth and ninth respectively . Finally UHSOB face tough opposition at No rth Brunswick and will have to fight hard to get off the bottom rung . My selections this week - Doveton against Old Essendon . La Trobe to win a close one over St . Bedes . Heatherton to beat Old Geelong because of the home ground . North Brunswick should prove too strong for UHSOB. West Brunswick should enjoy the trip to Peninsula and come home winners, while Aquinas at home should be too talented and too strong for Brunswick .

D Section by Ian Cairn s The first round provided a poor start for some teams and for this tipster! Only 2 out of 5 - thanks go to Whitefriars and AJAX . Old Camberwell provided the upset of the day with a convincing 55 point win over the fancied MHSOB . Old Camberwell could soon be known as `The Quiet Achievers' since no-one had heard much about their pre-season form and President, Matthew Todd, wasn't saying much at the Southern Cross Dinner. Old M entonians showed again how difficult they are to beat at their home ground, whilst Whitfriars also showed their likeness for playing at home with a massive 141 point win over Elsternwick . Thomastown accounted for Bulleen United where the 'highlight" of the game was umpire, Geoff Thwaites, being knocked out 10 minutes into the last quarter! Geoff bounced the ball and jogged backwards to watch the ruck contest, only to see both ruckmen charging directly at him and a wayward ball . He ducked but not quickly enough and was sandwiched between the two big players - 'Bricks' strikes again! This week sees only two victors from the first round playing each other - Thomastown and Old Camberwell . It should be an interesting game as both sides play a similar game - relying on their backmen and followers to run the ball out of defence. Thomastown looked good last week and with the home ground advantage should just win in a close game . Bulleen United travel to Powerhouse in what will be the first ever encounter between the two clubs . Bulleen United are still waiting on some late clearances and Coach, Vic Harvie, hopes to have one of last year's stars, Gary Armstrong, back in action . With the addition of these players, the Bulls should be a better side than last week and should record their first win . 4

F-Troop with Peter Hille

Bit of a problem last week when my opening preview for the season was taken for a Comedy Festival script and used as subtitles for the Lawyers, Guns and M oney production at the D24 Auditorium . An enjoyable show this, as a Roya! Commissin is held into the corruption which festers within the ranks of MCC parking officers and the VFL Commissioners . In a nutshell, parking fines are used as a stake in betting on rigged matches . Unfortunately, the audience are sworn to secrecy, so the scandal will never be exposed . Anyway, that's the VFL . What about real football - the VAFA, or the French Code as it's become know over recent years. Speaking of Frenchy (congratulations Peter - Vic Sport is bound to prosper under your guidance) the shortlist for his replacement reads like a missing page from "Who's Who?" Little Johnny Howard reckons his family package is perfect for the Amateurs and he's always wanted his own radio show ; John-Boy Friedrich reckons the VAFA markekting maestros could do wonders with a fleet of helicopters and short-range submarines ; Winsome McCaughey reckons the VAFA could easily host the 1996 Olympics ; and so on . Boy, whod be a judge with that little lot .

And speaking of judgement, my missing epistle meant my pre-selections for Round 1 were about as dicey as Ian Macphee's . But, once again I trust in the good faith of the column's readers . I selected 4 out of 5 and accurately forecast that St Andrews would have a bye . I missed out on the Harry Trotters who were given a nice old pounding by new chums, Waverley Amateurs, a club sponsored by the Dinsdale Preservation Society . Congratulations to Waverley on their first success, and similarly to our other newcomer, Mazenod OC who had a 10 goal break at the end of their encounter with the "Zedders". In fact, our maiden performers caused more damage to the Banks last week than would the collapse of Soccer Pools or the liquidation of the Tommy Lahiff Financial Advisory Corporation . Other first-up winners included the 'Reds' who jumped Old Carey on a borrowed stretch of sand and withstood a spirited fightback by Kelvin Shaw's highmarkers ; 'Willy', even without `Pencil' in their lead, had a comfortable win over the 'Banjos' and `the Artists' had a narrow win over the lads from Footrot Flats in the by-election at Greensbo ro ugh . St Andrews spent the bye moving their old pavilion down to their new ground . PLAYER OF THE ROUND : Waverley veteran and VAFA Executive Member, David 'Pastry' Cook who played his 300th club game last week . We veterans have to stick together David . A prize will be on its way to your shortly . THIS WEEK'S MATCHES : Match of the Day : St Andrews at home to Mazenod OC . Even executive member, Tommy Johnson is making the trek north for the opening of the newly, sanctified De Chene Rese rve Pavillion in East Coburg . The Sainters former homer at Brearley Rese rve in Pascoe Vale South was about as roomy and comfortable as an English soccer stadium and the Saints are happy to have secured the former home of Coburg Amateurs, where the ghost of Clem Middling can still be heard along the Merri Creek which separates the ground from the cemetery (ah yes, F-Troopers imagine the dark, cold Saturday nights in June & July as you leave this ground after an away fixture!) . So to the match : Mazenod (which sounds like a bad case of sinusitis) were impressive first up and have a solid record in the South Eastern Biblical Association but I suspect their visit to Boot Hill will be a testing time . I'm selecting Roland Magro's Unde rtakers to bury the 'Noddies' by about 3 goals . In other matches : Tommy `Getta' Brain will turn on the typical `Zedders' hospitality but I fancy the `Reds'to turn on the better footy and win by 5 or 6 twin calicos. Old Carey should bounce back to win at home over Waverley with a margin of 3 or 4 majors . The Harry Trotters let me down last week and I fancy the Artists to record their second win by about 20 points. The Eagles went close last week and should win at home by 5 or 6 twins against the 'Banjos'.

Personality Par 150 TO OLD BRIGHTON LEGEN D Last week's big win was a fitting result to celebrate Ma tthew "Bootie" McLennan's 150th game for Old Brighton Grammarians . Matty has been one of the club's finest players in the 1980's and certainly one of the fairest in amateur football . His weaving runs down the wings at South Raod, wearing the Number "2" on his red and blye guernesy, have caused many a Melbourne supported in opposition sides to do a 6

"double take" . When "Bootie" is blitzing, he has the ball on a string and leading forwards are always well rewarded . Though a man of few words, 'Bootie" is a proud and determined player, and only those hamstrings are threatening a new member of the 200 club in the next few seasons . Congratulations Matt, from everyone at Old Brighton . If everyone follows your example and is even half as loyal to the Red and Blue, success in B Grade will surely follow. REVIEW OF M ATCHES PLAYED 15TH APRIL, 198 9 Round 1 results in many instanced differed from my tips so I am looking for increased accuracy today . Another area for improvement today please in the phoning of scores to the appropriate person . I can't give you a mention if you don't supply the facts ! G SECTIO N Kew showed no mercy to De La Salleand ran out winners by seventy two points which proved me a poor judge of form . My lack of judgment was compounded by Collegians big victory over Bulleen Templestowe to the tune of one hundred and twenty five points. Old Melburnians twenty one point victory over M onash Whites rubbed more salt into my G . wounds which Old Scotch's twenty eight point victory over St . Bernards made more painful . The exodus of players from the Old Xaverians Club was underlined by their defeat at the hands of Port Colts by fifty two points. Thank you Bloods whose forty five point victory over Marcellin prevented me being completely erroneous in G Section . H SECTIO N Kontias justified my faith in their first match prospects by defeating Old Geelong by forty points. R ichmond Central despite inaccurate kicking were able to defeat State Bank by twenty nine points . GTV9 failed by thirty six points at CBC St . Kilda ; a fate which befalls many sides! St . Kevins showed early form when they defeated Balaclava by seventy points . Salesian College won their first VAFA game when they defeated Therry by thirty two points . Powerhouse has the bye. UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Whitefriars annihilated Banyule by one hundred and sixty one points whereas another newly promoted side Ormond had to come from behind in the last quarter to defeat Collegians by a mere thirteen points. M arcellin quickly shed its pre-season worries when they accounted for University Blues by fifty one points . De La Salle Blue accounted for Old Xaverians by forty nine points in the replay of last year's Grand Final . In a result which surprised me (and many others) Old Haileybury outlasted Old Paradians Green to win four valuable points at Bundoora . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Old Brighton Grammarians justified my selection when they defeated M elbourne High School Old Boys by fifty eight points on the High School Oval . University Blacks did themselves proud when they accounted for a young Bulleen Templestowe by one hundred and seventeed points . Therry made light of their alleged lack of players when they over-powered Caulfield Grammarians to win by one hundred and thirty one points . Old Scotch proved too talented for North Old Boys as the Cardinals ran out comfortable winners by forty five points . In the match of the round M onash Blues and Old Paradians Purple played an exciting draw. St Bernards at home accounted for Old Melburnians by a total of fifty three points . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Aquinas found little difficulty in defeating the young Ivanhoe side by one hundred and fourteen points . Mazenod announced their arrival in Amateur Football with a resounding one hundred and fifty one point victory over fellow newcomer, Albanvale. Thomastown signalled their return to Under 19 football with a clear cut victory by fifty eight points over St Kevins . Fawkner despite their optimism failed badly against Old Trinity who cruised to a one hundred and forty three point victory. De La Salle vindicated my judgement when they defeated Parkside by fifty one points . Hampton Rovers had a bye due to the later withdrawal of Old Essendon while Bulleen United drew the bye in Round 1 . PREVIEW OF ROUND 2 TO BE PLAYED APRIL 22, 198 9 G SECTIO N With the knowledge gained last week I hope to do better than select one winner today . Collegians buoyant after last week's big win journey to St Bernards where I expect the Lions will win again . Port Colts who began in a blaze of glory last week journey to De La Salle who failed badly in Round 1 . With these facts in front of me I select Port Colts. Neighbours Bulleen Templstowe and M arcellin meet on Timber Ridge Reserve. Marcellin's form last week as the more impressive and today I look forward to another Eagle victory. Two of last week's disappointing sides Old Xaverians and Monash Whites meet in Yarra Park . With no great confidence after last Saturday I select Old Xaverians . Two of last week's winners, Bloods and Kew, meet at Glenhuntly where the ground size will test Kew. At home I favour Bloods to win . In a historically based game Old Melburnian s will be at home to Old Scotch . Given last week's form by OMs I select them . THE AMATEUR FOOTBA L LER 1989

H SECTIO N State Bank journey along the Albert Park Lake to play Balaclava who provided little resistance to St Kevins last week . Although last week the Bankers didn't give a gilt edged display I favour them today . Salesians journey to Old Geelong where I expect the newcomers will prove to talented . Two of last week's winners in Richmond Central and CBC St Kilda will meet at Swinburne Technical School . I select Richmond who, despite inaccuracy on the forward line, won away from home last week . Therry will be at home to Power House who make their 1989 debut . At hor-ie I fancy Therry to take the points. GTV9 will be home to Kontias who won well last week . GTV9 will handle t he A lbert Park winds the better but I have the feeling Kontias will prove to strong . St Kevins have the bye. UNDER 19 SECTION I Ormond at home should prove too strong for Banyule who disappointed last week. Whitefriars will be anxious to celebrate their flag unfurling with victory over Old Paradians Green. The Paradians should have the experience to test Whitefriars although I expect te home side to be in front at the final siren . Two regular sectional finalists Old Xaverians and Marcellin meet in 4`arra Park. Advice tendered to me indicates the Old Xaverians are depleted and this factor, coupled with Marcellin's good win last week, prompts me to select M arcellin . Old Haileybury will be confident of victory over De La Salle Blue following their meritorious win last Saturday. After a lot of thought I lean to De La Salle Blue to score a narrow victory. Two of last week's losers University Blues and Collegians meet on the Crawford Oval . Collegians showed me sufficient form last week to warrant me selecting them today . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 N orth Old Boys will test University Blacks who must have improved on their 1988 form . I'll gamble on a Blacks victory without any degree of confidence . Two promoted sides Old Brighton and M onash Blues will meet at Brighton Beach Oval where I favour the home side to take the points . Two round one losers Bulleen Templestowe and Caulfield Grammarians will meet on Timber Ridge . At home I select the young Bulleen Templestowe side to win . Old Paradians Purple will unfurl their 1988 pennant before playing St Bernards who had a good win last week. It is always difficult for visitors to win at Bundoora but today I fancy St Bernards will prove too experienced and will take the points . Therry, at home, should be capable of defeating Melbourne High School Old Boys. There is no 1988 form to discuss as each side forfeited the other's home match . Old M elburnians are at home to Old Scotch whose form last week was the more impressive . Today I expect Old Scotch to win again . UNDER 19 SECTIO N 3 Two of last week's big winners meet at Thomastown where Old Trinity will be the visitors . The small Thomastown ground could prove too congested for Trinity although overall I must select Old Trinity. In what could well be a final's preview Mazenod are home to Aquinas . It is difficult to fault Maz enod's form in Round 1 and Aquinas did well too. At home I go for Mazenod . Hampton Rovers make their debut for 1989 against St Kevins who disappointed last week . At home I favour Hampton Rovers to win . Fawkner await Parkside who coud acquite themselves well today. Fawkner really failed themselves last week and so they will be anxious to atone . I know they have some capable players and sufficient numbers which will be strong points as the season progresses . Fawkner to win . Bulleen United will attempt to win their first encounter as an Under 19 side. De La Salle Gold did well last week and today I expect they will prove to be too strong for Bulleen United . Albanvale visit Ivanhoe whose ground is often a grave yard for visiting sides . At home I have little expectations of any result apart from a convincing win for Ivanhoe.

Umpire's Corner by Mike and Russel l

While we might have been a bit slow off the mark with an Umpire's Report last week, the column now kicks off today with a big "HELLO" from all the whistle-blowers, boundary riders and flag-wavers and wishes good luck to all club battling through the Sections this year . The umpires welcome Brian Woodhead (ex VFL) to the senior Advisor position for 1989 . His ever reliable and seemingly ageless deputy, `Simmo' together with fitness man John Bugden, are likewise acknowledged . We were going to mention Benny, `Killer' King and the observers but we won't on this occasion . The 'Goalies' welcome Kevin Barker for another stint . His expertise will surely benefit the new members of the scorekeeping brigade . The column welcomes Russell Francis as co-writer of this diatribe. `Trusty' replaces Ron 'The Lip' Lippold who has retired to count his VAFA Finals medals, Russell is one of the nicest umpires we've met - which proves one thing - we've got to get out and meet a few more umpires . VAFA UMPIRE'S ASSOCIATION OFFICE-BEARERS FOR 1989 : President : Robert Bel l Vice-President: Russell Francis Secretary : Andrew Belcher Assistant Secreta ry : Peter Keogh Treasurer : Rodney Clarkso n Social Secretary : Graham Thwaite s Executive: Mike Murray, Wayne Henry, Kevin Segot a The Umpires pre-season dinner at the Bentleigh Club was voted a great success . Terrific surroundings, excellent food and good humour augured well for a top night . Pity the unsuspecting waiters who collected John Slater's flying chicken! Better stick to your Pritikin vegetables, rice, oatmeal and berocca tablets from no on, John . Goalie, Billy Fowler, is about to do a remake of Elton John's "I'm still standing". (if only he could! ) Poor old Tommy "White Wacker" Zapaldo. Fancy chancing his fitness level by doing a Leigh Matthews' an assaulting a behind post (not once but twice!) "Keep on Bouncing". Mike and Russell

'OTF` noted a few surprises in the opening round . University Blues upset the reigning premiers Ormond, O.M's crashed at Therry, relegated clubs Caulfield Grammarians & Ivanhoe began well with wins in C Section . Victories by AJAX & Old Mentonians suggest they're in for good seasons in D, La Trobe University proved they're up to it in E and newcomers Mazenod & Waverley both won impressively in F . Of the other new Clubs Salesian Old Boys & Kontias each recorded strong wins in H Section although Albanvale found Mazenod far too strong in Under-19 Section 3 . Well known V.A .F.A . identities Jim Hawkins (President), John Dillon (Immediate Past President), David Scott (Executive Chairman) and Tony O'Callaghan (Properties Officer) were all proud fathers last Saturday as each had a son (In Tony's case, two) playing Amateur football . Association Treasruer, Noel Rundle wonders whether the deeds of the sons will outshine those of the fathers ? The Chairman of Selectors for the Interstate team, Mr. Noel Rundle has announced the training squad for the interstate match against South Australia schedule for Sunday, 28th May at Elsternwick Park . The Squad is as follows : ORMOND - M . McDonald, R . Barnds P. Kingston, S. Taylor, P Schuhkraft, P. Cox, A . Jobling OLD XAVERIANS - G . Greetham , MARCELLON O.C. - M . Getson, J . Origlasso , UNI BLUES - M . Yandell, A . Schlicht, N . Macauley, R . Furphy, C . Taylor. COLLEGIANS - J . Bennett, R . Schober. KEW - B. Burden . THERRY - P Matton . OLD PARADIANS - D . Way, M . OLD HAILEYBURY - G . Philips . Noel told 'OTF' "It has been necessary to select the initial squad of 33 after the first game as there are only 5 matches before the team will be chosen ." "It will also be necessary to add and subtract weekly due to form, availability and injuries;' he said . UNDER 19 FOOTBAL L `OTF' reports that Old Essendon was a late withdrawal from Under 19 Section 3 and that for the remainder of the 1989 "The teams drawn to play Old Essendon will play the team drawn as the bye . " In addition the Executive Committee was concerned at the number of forfeits last season and recognizing that the Under 19 competition and players are the FUTURE of the V .A .F.A . it has determined that in 1989 "THE GAME MUST BE PLAYED" . As a result Clubs must turn up each Saturday and if either side has less than 16 players (the minimum required to compete for the 4 match points) the following will apply : A team which has only, say 12, 13, 14 or 15 players will play the opposition with the same amount of players . The team which has the full complement (18 plus four interchange) may offer its extras so that 18 from each team play, although if it prefers not to lend any players then 13 from each play and the team with the full complement has 5 players plus 4, i .e. 9 optional to use as interchange . If a team with "the lot" decides to accept the 4 points and NOT play then it will be fined as if it has forfeited!!!

SO THE GAME IS TO BE PLAYED IN 198 9 Further on Under-19 football the policy trialled in 1988 relative to abusive and obscene language will again apply this year. That is "An audible obscenity will result in the player being automatically ordered from the field for 15 minutes . If a second offence occurs or one of the umpires is the subject of the obscenity the player will be reported and automatically sent off for 15 minutes .

PICK THE PRE M IER S

I mentioned in last week's Amateur Footballer that I wanted to discuss 'networking' . The V.A .F.A . provides an excellent networking facility to which any of its sponsor group can work . Sponsor to sponsor, sponsor to executive. sponsor to Club, sponsor to player, sponsor to supporters . . . . . the list goes on as "V.A .F.A :' intertwines amongst business and sporting groups . Its a most important selling point to existing and prospective sponsors . . . . because with the V.A .F.A . it really works. Many companies associated with V.A .F.A . will vouch for the effectiveness of V .A .F.A . networking facility.

Ansett Airlines and The Chateau Commodore announce a Pick the Premiers Competition which is open to all readers of the Amateur Footballer . Simply cut out the coupon and forward to : Pick the Premiers P .O . Box 359 ELSTERNWICK 318 5 The first or nearestcorrect entry to be drawn following the A Section Grand Final will win a weekend for Two in the Harbour City flying Ansett .

At the Club level you too can provide a similar facility for your sponsor group or prospects . Club sponsor to club sponsor, club sponsor to club executive, officials, players and supporters . . . . plus your club sponsor may want to 'tap into' the V.A .F.A . sponsor group! These things can be arranged and its up to each club to be aware of its sponsors current needs and marketing opportunities. You may well ask "How do you make this networking happen? "

All entries will be held by the Association's auditor, Mr . Bruce Church . All entries to be received by Friday 26th May, 1 989 .

(BOEING 737-200 )

Well all clubs have functions at the commencement of the season, after match functions, trophy presentations, past players luncheons and so on .

Get the principals from your sponsor group along to these functions . . . . introduce them to the gathering and make them feel welcome . Make them part of your club coterie activities and find out if there is a person or a group they may wish to meet . Don't over do it! Make the introductions and at the appropriate time step back and let them discuss business . It doesn't always happen the first time but isn't it amazing how many people just happen to have their business card in their pocket when they're out socialising . I II be pleased to discuss this topic further with you, if you wish to give me a call . Until next issue . . . . . . the catchphrase is "Go networking"

ROUND 2 - 5 YEARS AGO, 198 4 It was a great day at Kew when Terry Hayes played his 300th game for Kew - since joining the club in 1965, Terry had won the best and fairest 5 times, and had been runner-up 7 times! Terry coached Kew to a long awaited premiership in 'C' Section in 1979 and with his great club spirit and determination Terry had led the club back to 'A' Section . An outstanding centreman, and at times, rover, Terry joined past players Ken Rogers and Don Mullin as 300 game players.

Paul Smith played his 100th game for St Kilda CBOC, and was called "a talented and skilful player" with uncanny ability to kick goals from impossible positions (has been known to miss from up front!) . Advertisers included Repco Auto Parts, Peter Natah the Plastics man, John F . Hickman Trophies, Antipest (managed by Laurie Aghan) and Hoyts Cinemas, 150 games to one of Old Haileybu ry 's all time great clubmen, John Corrigan, best and fairest 1981-82 . Ivanhoe and Parkside met in a 'thriller', the difference at the first change was 1 point, at half time 5 pionts, at the final change again 1 point, and at the finish the Red Devils had beaten the 'Hoes by 4 points, 20.15 to 19 .17. Best were Ware, Yoksich, Fletcher, Howell (7 goals) and Simondson, Gittos, Balcombe (6 goals) . 10 YEARS AGO - 1979 Congratulations on 100 games to Old Carey's secretary, M ike Andrews, Peter Donegan of De La Salle, Max ` Waxie' Walker ( A M P) . Umpires Association officials were Collin Wills (President), Richard Tracey (Secretary) and David Hindle (Treasurer) . Old Scotch were still in the horrors after their 1978 triumps . None of their three teams had yet been able to open its premiership account . 'A' Section coaches were Bernie Sheehy (De La Salle), Max Condle (Ivanhoe), Shane Maguire (NOB), Peter M cLean (Old Melb), Brendan Dannaher ( Old Par-ad), Laurie Aghan (Old Scotch), Wayne Walsh ( Ormond), Mich M ahoney (St Bernards), Ted Farrell (U. Blacks) and Alan Slater (U. Blues) . Assistant Umpires Adviser was Graeme Simpson who had retired after umpiring his 300th game in 1978 'E' Grand Final . Blues star half forward Rod Hager was forced to retire after a severe knee injury . Best and fairest in 1977, Rod's finest quality was his big match temperament. 200 games to Old Brighton's Bar ry Ga rt ner, De La Salle's Barry Lyons and Peter Rule (Old Ivanhoe) . 15 YEARS AGO - 1974 In a tight game, St Bernard's held on to beat `Caulfield Grammarians by 2 points, Caulfield played classy football in the first quarter, scoring 6 goals (fullforward John Butcher getting 5) to St . Bernard's 1 goal . St Bernard's gradually whittles away their opponents lead and went to a 16 point lead halfway through the final quarter. Caulfield rallied with two goals and then the siren went . Best were G . and M . M ahoney, Sullivan (St . B) and Tootell, Butcher, Clark (Caulfield Gram . ) Har ry Trott Oval saw plenty of excitement . Collegians beat Power House by a solitary point in the Seniors while the Reserve drew . 150 games to All Australian player and captain of State team, Ormond vice-captain Bruce Bourne . Old Carey and M HSOB played a draw in 'B ' Section, 10.10 each . Best were Elliot, Freeman, Thomas ( Old Carey) and Lolatgis, Ternes, Ponton ( M HSOB) . 20 YEARS AGO - 1969 M onash (up from 'B') withstood a 6-4 last quarter burst from Caulfield Grammarians to win by 14 points with final score 16.14 to 14.13 . Best - Monash : Rattray (5 goals), Marshall, Thomas ; Caulfield Grammar : M cNichol, Cha ffey, Macdonald . Highest score for the day was St Kevins OB 20.22 to AJAX's 4.14 . Best for winners were K . Hoare, Sheehan, Wallace. Don Simpson, Brunswick's 250 games-plus veteran was the club's best against Patricians . 'A' Section umpires were M arshall, Loy, G .M . Simpson, George and Jorgensen . Congratulations were due to Brian McKnight (15 0 games - Melbourne High), Scotty Phillips (150 games - National Bank), Jack Scanlan (100 - St Kilda CBC) and "Nuggett' Stephens (OGC's - 56th birthday) . 30 YEARS AGO - 195 9 Trueboot artist Des Shiel kicked 10 goals for St Kevin's in their easy 83 point win over South City, the Old Boys kicking 9 .9 to City's 0.1 in the final term . St . Kevin's faced the season with confidence, both for football and finance, with 'old prospector' John Douglas back as captain coach and `Silver Circle' Summers controlling 'purse-strings'. Parkside reported that the barbecue at Ben Cock's was a huge success and Brian Lauder's sign certainly showed the way . 'A' Section umpires were Lugg, Barker, Burgess, Henderson and Oulmer . Ormond's inaccuracy, 10.15 aided Old Paradians in their 17 point win with Pivetta kicking 7 goals out of 14 for the winners. 15

O'Brien's 8 goals were decisive in Coburg's 5 p ont win over Old Melburnians, 14 .11 to 12 .18. 4 0 YEARS AGO - 1949 In a game that was tight all day Ormond beat Uni . Blacks by 5 points at University - the only team to have beaten the Blacks at home in the past 11 years . Scores were 7.9 (51) to 6 .10 ( 46) . Pat Cash, Max Smyth and Jack Cordner were best for Blacks while Ormond gave most credit to their coach Lou Bois . In another 'A' Section game, Old Scotch held off a fine finishing effort by Brunswick to win by 4 pionts . Bob Arnold, M anson Russell and M ick Eggleston starred for the victors while half-forward flanker,

"Tonky" M ellors (6 goals, full back Alan Sporton, and Alan Neale (ruck) were great players for Brunswick . Teacher's College were outplayed by Collegians but Jack Kennedy was outstanding in ruck for Teachers. (Hawthorn's John Kennedy) . Arrangements were in hand for Interstate match against South Australia at St. Kilda Cricket Ground on "King's Birthday" - June 13 ; the first game in Melbourne between the states since 1937 .

TWO 100 GAMES AT BALACLAVA Last week and this week see two of Balaclava's favourites play their 100th games. George Brown, celebates his century last week against Caulfield Grammarians, George would have had his ton earlier but he went walkabout in W.A. for a year. A flourishing TV career came to a halt because of his love for Balaclava. All at Balaclava hope to hear Georges witty remarks from the boundary for another 100 games . Ian W ithers is one of the more popular identities around the club, especially as he works at C .U.B . Always first out on the training track, his enthusiasm at training is inspiring to the Club, being a tee-totaller, he is also the clubs fitness adviser and is always on hand if nobody can open a barrel . The Balaclava Football Club congratulates Ian and hopes he stays around long enough to challenge brother Stewie's game tally. IS IT THE YEAR OF THE SNAKE? Who would have even pondered at the very thought of Robin Martin reaching this momentous and glorious milestone but that much discussed and wagered day has finally arrived ! What can one say about this great Clubman who started his unsung service to M elbourne High School Old Boys Football Club way back in 1973 playing the early U17 games and then doubling up in the Reserves after a hair-raising car trip to another distant Ground . "Tamba", one of his affectionate psuedonyms amongst others, quickly established himself in the Reserve Grade ranks with many fine games, booting many exciting goals and also through no fault of his own, established a rare quality of partying to all hours of the morning and yet always looking fresh and putting in during the next day game. To be frank, this quality has seen him through the last 16 years in a somewhat turbulent career. High spots include 93 goals in 1979 D Section and being the highest VAFA goalkicker that year, 3 VAFA Grand Finals (although no flags), 2 MHSOB Best Clubman Awards, Vice Presidency of the Club and being Social Convenor for more years than most people, including yours truly, can remember. Robin's contribution to this great club, I suppose, can never really be equalled! His tour of duty has lasted so long and his achievements, notoriety and commeraderie have been superb. VALE ELEAZOR ( Pop) SHAPIR - M .H .S .O.B . All persons, players, supporters, past and present committees, sadly mourn the passing of our esteemed member, Pop Shapir last December 1988. To everyone who knew Pop, he was a father and mentor to all, a man you could confide in and speak to al any time and a much respected and loved supporter of our Club. The writer recalls first meeting Pop back in 1973 as a new player and he took me aside, welcomed me down and said "You'll learn to love this club" which is probably an understatement to say the least . Pop's contribution to MHSOB can't really be quantitied, having served as Club President 1932-1952, Club delegate, Supporters Convenor, and became an institution at the School Oval, during both cricket and football seasons. Pop's contribution to Melbourne High School committees is unsurpassed and he is survived by a cousin and sister only, his only son having fallen during WWII and his lovely wife passing on some years ago . Life wont quite be the same at MHSOB without Pop, that familiar figure and voice from in front of the scoreboard pavillion yelling encouragement to his beloved Green, Maroon and Black sons playing for his beloved Club. The VAFA honoured Pop Shapir same years ago by awarding him a ''Certificate of Merit" for meritorious services to football and the VAFA, an award well deserved and presented to a man who will be long remembered by all who had any contact with our Pop . Thanks for all the good times and memories Pop. We'll miss you!" Tim Gallop, President Tony Orchard, Member.

"SPAZ" MAKES IT 50 AT BRUNSWICK Congratulations to Patrick Spezza on playing his 50th game. Spaz first joined the club in 86 and has beenn a regular senior player even since. SPAZ is a very gifted footballer, with equally good skils on both sides of the body, He is a team orientated player always ready to feed out the handball and often finishes a match with more handballs than kicks . SPAZ was a member of our '86 Reserves Premiership team and who will forget that pressure goal he kicked to win the '86 second-semi final against State Bank . Well done SPAZ and keep up the good work .
