an action packed round! Oh the joys of tipping, well done Parade who helped me to 4 winners for cund instead of the 5 . Parkside's win over Old Xaverians, their first ever win in A Grade, was great news for amateur competition . parkside's win was full of merit after losing the first 3 round . They really played hard, physical football . and oung Old Xaverians were shell shocked . The duel between the Rovers Mark Sedgwick (5 majors) against pan Meagher (3 majors) was a delight to watch, but the Red Devils rover finished on top at the end of the Old Xaverians ruckman, Laurie Meeham, dominated at the centre circle, however Parkside continually i a ball from the centre through the good play of Mark 'Skipper' Sturgess, Nino (Brett Burden Tagger ) Vincitorio, Brian 'Arnie' Glasgow and Gary 'Centrefold' Williams . John Cu rtain and David Taylor tried ,' all day for Old Xaverians, however Parkside full of running went away in the last quarter to record a 4 6 in over the youngs boys from Old Xaverians . Old Paradians scored an exciting win over Ormond on a very heavy ground by 2 points in a tough . entertaining = Parade, leading by 20 points at half time, had their lead whittled to 2 points at the 3/a time break . an d - :oth sides kicking 4-4 each in the last quarter, Parade held on in a thrilling game . Mark Beers played oast game for Parade since leaving Colingwood . James Geary had another impressive game ad did my mate Dominic Spillane, his best game for some time. Ormond were best served by Russell `Maddog ' Barnes, Brett Connell and Mr Reliable Mark McDonald who tried valiantly to lift the Monds to victory. North Old Boys at home to Old Scotch really had a hard fight for victory. North jumped the Cardinals race to a lead of 36 points at half time . The Cardinals came back with a seven goal third quarter . Each sid e ed 4 goals in the last quarter, giving North Old Boys victory by 22 points . Bruno Conti (5 goals) played oart in the victory . His foot passing was superb . Tony Cahill, playing on the opposite flank, caused Scotch of trouble, as once again did centre half back, Mr All Australian, Paul Considine . Steve O'Rourke continue d his good form, Old Scotch had many good players, winger Andrew Smith (5 goals), gave half forward Justin Hart and Peter Brown plenty of the ball . Robbie `Captain' Fuller and Brian Hodge again turned in . - r ; serviceable games, as North Old Boys deserved their victory . Uni Blues, after 3 quarters of sluggish football, really turned it on in the last quarter to overpower a disappiont ng M arcellin team . Uni Blues, with ruckman Mike Yandell dominating the game, gave Nick Macaulay and Richard Furphy first use of the ball all day, but they only led by 11 points at half time . Marcellin struggling up forwar d [- re Paddy McIntyre and Chris Mason were well checked by Graeme Hazeldine and Tony `Mr Smooth' Schlicht, finally got going in the third quarter to kick 4 goals to lead by 1 point at the three quarter break . But Steve Boysen kicked their 10th goal Marcellin stopped . Uni Blues added 6-3 in the final 20 minutes ~e game to run out comfortable winners . Joe Amad was prominent all day for the Eagles as was flanke r Tony Caffry (3 goals) . Chris Carr certainly was not disgraced, but the result would have left a bitter tast in the outh of Marcellin President, Ray Walsh . Collegians travelled to Victoria Park to take on the undermanned Kew side. Collegians jumped to an early d but Kew's second quarter (5 goals) was great football marred by their inaccurate kicking to lead the Lions 11 pints at half time interval . After the interval Kew added only 1-6 to Collegians 6-7 to enable the Lions in out winners by 45 points. Collegians centreman David Hoyle turned in a fine game, as did Matt Galbraith 7oals), Chris Pollock was also prominent . Kew were well led by Brett `Bomber' Burden . who was in all jstralian form . Adrian Jenkins, Peter Burke and Sam Bruno again impressed . but Kew once again stopped >r half time . &I hope they do this week against Parkside) . Now to today's games, which promises plenty, and I expect this round will sort out who are the main contenders ne finals . Can Old Xaverians do it again? I doubt it . They defeated Marcellin 3 times in season 1988, but Old Xaverians are now relying on youth . The Eagle's Getson, Origlasso and Amad should ensure victor y d Coach Murray Browne will come up with moves to cover Meagher, Meehan and Taylor. Marcellin by, points .

Old Scotch at home to Ormond in what should be an interesting game . Season '88 saw the Monds easily account for the Cardinals and I believe even though Ormond are not playing well will do enough to be,-',, Scotch . Rover Paul Cox will be out injured . Kingston, Schuhkraft and Jobling must fire along with the P°onds brothers Paul and Mark McDonald . The Cardinals have some great players, Fuller, Smith, Moir, Hodge, Reddish . Ormond must win or last year premiers at this early stage might struggle to make the four . Ormond have only a 50% record in their last 10 games - to win by 20 points. In the match of the day Uni Blues travel to Brens Oval to tackle North Old Boys. Uni Blues have the be, ruckman in the comp, Mike Yandell, in top form . His control of the ball gives the running players Macaulay McCarty and Furphy first use. This will be most important because North Old Boys also have some clas players in Conti, Considine, Cahill and Moloney. This is a real danger game for the Varsity boys, but I wP go for Uni Blues to win a thriller by 10 points. In the other match of the day Old Pardians tackle Collegians at the Harry Trott Oval . Old Paradians wir over Ormond last week was full of merit, and I believe in history repeating itself. Parade beat the Lions in both encounters last season, and I see no reason to pick against them . Gun player for Parade, Beers, Wood, Geary Skerritt, Considine Boys (I expect David Way to be out injured) . Collegians need improvement from Phillips' Jimmy Bennett is due for a big one, as is Ray Berzins, Parkin and Tregear to give the Lions a winning centre line . However Parade's team strength to be vital with the top spot hinging on the result Paradians by 10 point s Parkside at home will take on Kew, in a replay of last years B Grade Grand Final . Both sides have had difficul~ starts to the year. Parkside due to injuries and suspensions suffered 3 losses before recording their first A Gradr victory against Old Xaverians . Kew on the other hand have played well in most matches, but faded after halt time. Parkside nearly at full strength with 3 victories in a row against Kew should make it 4, but much will depenri on Mitchell, Sedgwick, Sturgess, Glasgow and Williams. Kew are sadly lacking height, but their on-bu players are good . Burden, Jenkins, Burke with dangerous forwards Cavanagh, Fitzpatrick will worry Parkside The Red Devils by 20 points . SELECTIONS Collegians vs Old Paradians Marcellin vs Old Xaverians North Old Boys vs Uni Blues Old Scotch vs Ormond Parkside vs Ke w TRIVIA Answer to last week Trivia Question : The President of Marcellin, Ray Walsh, is the only coach in the history of the Amateurs to coach one side from F to A grade.
old Melburnians head for Trinity after tasting blood last week and Rick 'The Legend' Pisarski reckon s ' . certainties . The feeling in the Park Conveniences is that O M s have hit the comfort zone and will onl y
turn up to get the points . Despite a slow start, we 11 follow the money and tip O M s even though ' Maizel s the Gazelle', 'Ando' and 'Buck' Rogers will need taming . ~ plays bottom at East Malvern where De La Salle are heading in a straight line for A grade and Fawkner r unlikely to offer much more than token resistance. The boys out west will head for town with all barrels ed but they'll only be firing blanks at the blue and gold . De La to win easily.
Monash are at home to Bulleen and according to 'Redback' Cornwell are 'just travelling'. Still, to run Therry joal isn't doing too badly . I was impressed by Therry who run hard at the ball and always look for the Sandman'. 'Wriggles' and 'Boddles' rarely play ordinary footy either, so Monash must have something going em, even if their heart and sole 'Professor Keith Fearson' can only contribute from the fence . Bulleen ung and determined side and wil have learned plenty against the B grade leders last week . One Bulleen man in particular will be hoping Mark Thomas isn't umpiring the game! No names mentioned, but I wonder wife believed his story? This is a toss up, but Monash at home, might just scrape in . -ii .: toughest game will be between St Bernards and Therry in the local derby. St Be rn ards ran hard last to crowd Old Brighton's forwards and just ran out of legs in the last ten minutes . Their own forwards ;rong and confident and this will really test the Therry defence. Therry have lacked concentration in recen t They were storming over Brighton early in the last quarter but stopped and let the visitors kick the last s . St Bernards grind away all day . This will go down to the wire, but I'll tip the home side to finally get act together and to win with the last kick of the day. Therry by a whisker.

The shock in round 4 was the one point result to St Kilda over Caulfield at Albert Park . On fornn Caulfield -,d the goods. Having been beaten by top side Banyule the week before, a win at home was a must . Six als up at half time, supporters were looking to the record to see who they played next week . Little did they ow that the Saints had plenty left, and by three quarter time scores were even and a great last term was I, e witnessed . With greather desire for the hard ball, the Saints got home by one behind in the last 30 second s !~,e game in what I believe a tonic for C grade as the competition has been all too obvious to date . The highlight 'ne game was twelve goals each to the respective full forwards, David Mathews ( Caulfield) and Tony Riddell . Tony really is having a great season so far. Best players for St Kilda : Riddell, Andrew Murphy in the ruck, Mark Howard roving, John Howard on ball, new player Clayton Bennett on half forward . For Caulfield : David f,lathews, Morrissey, T. Royals, Rudden, Caple and Boston tried hard all day. Preston came away in the last term to score the points over Old Ivanhoe. After three close quarters Preston's .nning players took control . Laurie Johnson game great drive down the centre all day giving Phillips plenty opportunities, finishing with 9 goals and Hepburn with six . Best for Preston : Johnson, Phillips, Ewing, "Aason, Hepburn and Turner. Banyule, as expected, were too strong for St Kevins who put up a good effort . The Bears travelled to St Kevins, not a happy hunting ground in past years and received, as expected, a hard competitive match . John 'Big Nose' Gilham captained the Bears and led by example by doing the hard work in the packs whil e ~ man of the match being evergreen Mick Power, holder of the most games played for Banyule - Well done Mick! Balaclava came away with the point at Ivanhoe not before they earned them . By half time only 20 points =eoerated the sides . Balaclava had the man power to old off a very determined Hoes side. Best for Balaclava .as Matt Hill half forward, Mark Koutts back flank, Bernie Rafferty ruck roving and Hayden Dickson in the ',r-,k. Andy Hill always dangerous, finished with 4 goals.
An impressive 10 goal win by De La Salle over Bulleen-Templestowe, has shot De La to the top of the premiership list . With Old Brighton second on %, 5 other teams are locked together in equal 3rd positon . Old Melburnians' strong win over Uni Blacks can only add more interest to the table. This week's games should sort out the real contenders and promises to split the ladder in half . THIS WEEK'S MATCHES Match of the round this week is at the Varsity where the Blacks will be looking to bounce back hard against victors Old Brighton who are handling their promotion to B Section with the same determination they showed in last year's finals. Blacks must have been surprised to go down at Fawkner Park as the Navy Blues have had a dose of the'Mighty Blightys' all season and had perfected the last quarter fade out! Veteran Nick Heath was a notable absentee from the goal kicking list and will be keen to test M ark Sarau who has his charges playing with more discipline . Brighton was not over impressive against St Bernards last week, and although Brighton got the points (26 of them!) they will need to convert more effectively up forward . Paul Woff will be hoping to stay clear of the umpires this week . After his altercation at Therry, the big bloke collided with Mick Gilday in the final quarter, and the man in white left on a stretcher . Hope you're okay Mick! Did somebody hear Steve Clinch say Mick had been "sleeping on the job all day?" The Blackshave been well served by Grummett, Some rville 'Groaner' Wines and Tim "Skid" Marks in recent weeks while Brighton have had great value from the Oarsman, Chris Bro ok and Sid James . It'll be a tough one but I don't think the wheels are ready to fall off yet, so its Old Brighton to win their fifth straight .
Old Haileybu ry proved too strong, too fast and showed excellent skills in downing Hampton Rovers easily . ,ed the way Old Haileybu ry moved the ball, particularly out from the back line, through Chris McKenzie - trng up many moves and having plenty of optins up forward . Goals came from Neville Schmidt 6 goals, Phillips with 5 and best on ground Glen Tanner with 5 goals . I've watched Old Haileybury for many years .d this side is the best I've seen . (What will Langers be like come September!) Other good players were Roger the dodger), Gerry on the wing, John Bingham ruck, and a handy game from David Connell . From the Rover's point of view, another loss, but coach Ian Rice will need more concentration and more commitment

from his players. Best from the Rovers Steve Pappas a new player who showed great anticipation across,, backling - I was very impressed . Another good display from big Matt Salmon in the ruck and Matt RcKQpar; . roving all day. Overall Old Haileybury too classey and they will go a long way this year on curre~:t farm, Now to today's games ( current accuracy 80%) . The match of the day, undefeated sides Banyuie at home to Old Haileybury. Obviously the two bF . . . sides in the grade, both have won all games very convincingly. Unfortunately I haven't seen Banyule and i~> that reason alone I'm going for Old Haileybury to win in a great game (Which side wil crack under pressure~ St Kilda improving all the time to defeat St Kevins. Caulfield too strong for Old Ivanhoe. Hampton Rove,to win over Ivanhoe, only because they're playing at home . And the final game today, Preston to sneak tf- : points from Balaclava in a very even contest. P.S . Club reports by Monday lunchtime please . (AH) 598 8347. (W) 555 8911 and/or Fax 555 2610 . D Section by Ian Cairns Round Four produced 4 out of 5 winners for this tipster - the only blemish being State Bank's loss tc Thomastown . I predicted last week what the final four could end up looking like and included State E :nk But, after 4 rounds they've only beaten Ajax which makes an end of year finals spot look unlikely. Two of the top sides, Whitefriars and Old Mentone turned on a thriller at Donvale, with the home side getting home by just 4 points. Some inaccurate kicking at vital times by the Panthers proved costly, but at least the scoreline proved to all other clubs that the `Friartucks' are far from unbeatable. Another good game was played at Elsternwick Park where Power House won its third on end over Old Camberwell . Power House held a comfortable 28 points lead at half time, but a good comeback by OC saH the scores level at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter . However, a couple of good goals from Captain-Coach Evans saw Power House steady and run out winners by 26 points . Next door, Bulleen United continued its improved form with a comfortable 67 point win over old rivals Elsternwick . Wickers stalwart, Gary Rosewarne, playing his 299th game, kept Elsternwick in the game until half time, but a great 3rd quarter from the Baby Bulls set up a good win . The Harvie Brothers were again prominent, with good contributions from young Dolinko and Empey. In the last game MHSOB continued their improved form with a convincing 70 point win over the disappointing Ajax . Coach, Mark Feldy, must be wondering where their pre-season form has gone! This week, the match of the day is probably at Albert Park where Power House play host to neighbouring State Bank . Another loss to the Bankers could put the final four out of reach, whilst a loss for Power House could see them loose their tentative grip on fourth positon . It should be close, but I'll give the Bankers one last chance to vindicate themselves . At Bulleen, the Baby Bulls and MHSOB could be playing for a spot in the four. Both sides are improving each week and should put on a good game. Mark Kelly returns to the Bulls after suspension and his added pace should give the Bulls the winning edge . Elsternwick make the long trip to Thomastown and will need a dramatic form reversal to avoid another big loss . The Bears aren't doing much wrong, with new players blending well with the experienced players like the Fellows Brothers and Farchione. Thomastown should win comfortably. The out-of-form Ajax receive a visit from the in-form Whitefriars who will be looking for a big win to offset their points loss from a registration error in the first game. Pratt and Houston will be hungry for more goals and should kick more than enough to ensure a good win . In the last game, the two grammar boys meet at Camberwell . Mentone have been inconsistent, whilst Camberwell have not done much to please coach Butch McCallum . I'm not at all confident about picking a winner - form clearly suggests the Panthers, but OCs could provide the upset . It's another toss of the coin ; Mentone (I think) . So, selections are : Bulleen United v MHSOB Ajax v Whitefriars Thomastown v Elsternwick Old Camberwell v Old Mentonians Power House v State Ban k Any club reports or contributions can be phoned to me on 429 3640 (H) or 490 5522 (W )

E Section by Kevin McNichol l ::,nother round down and we are still no closer to seeing a clear picture at the top of the scale . Old Geelong ,-,%ered their critics with a good win over Brunswick, 18.14 to 15.13. This win leaves Old Geelong undefeated r ie Brunswick have 2 and 2 and will be looking forward to the next few weeks and easier games agains t ottom sides . West Brunswick recorded another sound win this time at the expense of North who face -,Duple of tough ones in the near future . St . Bedes & Aquinas both stayed in touch with the top group by _ ,,rding wins over Heathe rton & Doveton respectively. The battle for bottom spot saw UHSOB run out winners Peninsula and it is to be hoped that UHSOB can take heart and perhaps win a few more . The other undefeated e La Trobe travelled to Keilor and met a very determined Old Essendon and while La Trobe ran out winners , did not have things all their own way and had Essendon kicked accurately in the first and last quarters, may caused an upset . While Old Essendon have notched only one win at this stage don't be too surprise d ea them make a run as the season unfolds . Final scores in this match saw La Trobe 14.9 defeat Old Essendo n ,1 I am still not prepared to predict at the top end but I will stick my neck out and add two more to the lis t mose that won't make it this year. North & Heathe rton would need to stage amazing reversals in the nest or five weeks to have any chance and a look at their draw for this period would indicate that the job ahea d i be too difficult . At this point I would like to offer congratulations on behalf of all E Section Clubs to Phil Stevens , rIs appointment as General Manager of the V .A .F.A . Phil has a hard act to follow but I am sure his vast football oerience and enthusiasm will enable him to make his mark in this most important area of football administration . s ;i i!e we all understand the importance of the A & B Section competitioq, I am sure that clubs in C, D, E, F a ;c would like to see the General Manager attend some of their matches during the year as this is surely the ,:-,st way to get to know just what makes us tick . Now for today's games : West Brunswick at home to Aquina s a match that neither can afford to lose. St . Bedes entertain North at the beach . Heathe rton travel to Keilor their clash with Old Essendon, both will be hungry for a win . Dovetqn at home at the Power Reserve to ;nbeaten Old Geelong who should handle the trip and come away with the points . UHSOB have Brunswick <a Brunswick and should find the home side desperate to get back on the winners list . Finally Peninsula face ne long trip to La Tro be University, where even the top sides struggle and it would be difficult to imagine the ~avside boys having much to celebrate on the way home. Summing up, West to beat Aquinas . St . Bedes ove r orth Brunswic, Old Essendon too strong for Heatherton . Old Geelong to defeat Doveton, Brunswick to win o :ar UHSOB, and La Trobe should have little trouble accounting for Peninsula .

Oh the mortification! Tommy Brain's Boys (Getta's Tellas) do me by a white flag! Okay, I surrender - I'll ra you this week, I promise Zedders . And speaking of tips, try the following on for size : Little Johnny Howard is still gasping at the size of the bucket they tipped on him last Tuesday when the Kooyong Clydesdale (inspired by the Tommy Lahiff engineered collapse of the Sangster Stable's Soccer Pools) decided to give it one more try for top billing on Peter Nicholson's Rubbery Figures. KC reckons the country has had a gutful of policies and is now ready for a return to old-fashioned values like image, grooming, weather-girls, Sheraton sheets, Sunday Bread, Women's Weeklyprofiles, meaningful stares and Weddings of the Year . Ecstatic, KC was swamped with congratulations as Jeffrey Cannot gurgled over the car phone and the Brewers Elder Statesman said it was great to see a new liberal image being fostered . Derryn Hunch was overcome with emotion but is expected to recover . Meanwhile, Little J .H . said he would be a loyal supporter of KC but did not rule out the possibility of challenging Phil Stevens as leader of the VAFA . 2 . Sinkers to survive. This lad could survive an authenticated death certificate . With more cheek than Warwick Capper, Sinkers reckons criticism is a breakfast cereal and bad press means you change your ironing lady . And now, back to our regular listeners : Well it was 4 out of 5 last week with the Waves washed away by the last Kick of the day against the Zedders who were nearly swamped by the Waves' last quarter fightback but hung on to win by a solitary . The Waves have come home on the tide in recent matches but need to develop four-quarter consistency to pick up If, premiership points, The Zedders, on the other hand, are a vastly improved side eompared to their 1988 mo o and are now giving themselves a real chance of a final spot (hey, honey, where's that bankwagon??) . The Zedden; best included Michael "The Vet" Szeitz, Manny Nickleton, "Robot" and an RACV technician who final, performed Brain Surgery on Getta's auto. I ventured out to Boot Hill to give Col Gibson an English Lesson and to measure the size of the Undertakers' ground and the girth of Bruce "the Goose" Campbell . Well' you certainly need to be a running side to succeed here Some of the Banjos were ordering compasses by half-time, as the Undertakers cantered to a 50 pointe ,n a game that lacked real contest for possession . The Banjos are undermanned at the moment and will imprm whiIst the Undertakers (who were well served by Redder, Paddy, Sads & Jamie) need to work a little harder at fitness and play options . Out at Footrot Flats, the Noddies played in a coma until half time and even then were no more than 7 gor` Jp .vhen the bar opened in the Ho Chi M inh M emorial Pavillion . The Eagles have had about as much success lately as a Kanak Independence Leader but I'm tipping them to finish well above their current spot in the cellar . They've got a bye this week which means they won't have to congratulate anybody. For the Noddies, no one played better than 50 Game Milestoner, Andrew Chilcott (well done Andrew) and others to perform well were Bobby Calamari, Craig "Delmonte" Todd, & Timbo Smith .
In the main game, the Harry Trotters continued their impressive record in the close ones when they outlasted a fighting Willy to win by a pair of twins or, as Ross Stevenson would say, a Quad . The Harry's ability to come from behind is a sign of better things to come and their recent form is due in no small measure to Ruck Rookier, Ad ri an " M ale Tautology" Chapman, Adrian "Davy Jones Locker" Seagrave and Gavin "Re" Joyce . The Sunday Fixture saw Reds cause more damage than you'd see on Guy Fawkes' Night in Beirut as the Artists suffered their second hiding in 9 days . The Artists need to start their season all over again by supporting each other and listening to their coach . Better players for the Reds were Mark Marsden Junior, the Fox, Doofus, Doc & Slammin' Sam Alphabet . Player of the Week : Harry Trotter's Mr. Consistency, Gavin Joyce who was a tower of strength at centre half back . Diet-conscious Gavin has replaced his Mars Bars with Cherry Ripes so is guaranteed a good season . This Week's Matches : • Match of the Day : Old Carey v Comm Bank at Bulleen . Both sides in top form, but with John Elliott buoyed by the success of KC, and with Susan Hyphen as guest masseuse (not to mention the home-ground and Ron "Packeta" Purcell's Frederick Forsythe forays) I can't go past the Brewers. Porbably by a six pack . ® Another big game at the picturesque Uni Oval (where historians can be entertained by the ravings of "Burr--") when Redz take on the "Shoulda Be Champions (who, inspired by "Delemonte" Todd's western cousin have backed themselves for a small fortune) . Th Redz, if they could get their paperwork in order, could be a top side, and I fancy they'll give the Noddies a real fright . • Ledders to account for the Banjos by 2 or 3 twins . • Undert akers to overcome Willy by about 5 majors . = The Waves to be a little more settled than the Artists. 6

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED MAY 6, 1989 (ROUND 4) G SECTION Leaders Kew were more than equal to the challenges offered by Old Xaverians as Kew won by eight points . Bulleen Templestowe proved me wrong in my predictions when they outplayed De La Salle to record a twenty -e point victory over De La Salle . Old Melburnians proved far too strong for early season leaders Collegians i,o finished sixty seven points in arrears. Marcellin did not prove up to the challenge of defeating Old Scotch .,en the Eagles went down by thirty six points to the Collegians. Monash Whites gave a forfeit to the Bloods . ~= my belief that Port Colts defeated St . Bernards although by Monday afternoon no one from St . Bernards , as been able to contact anyone connectd with the VAFA to relay the match score . H'SECTION Therry let me down when Kontias inflicted a forty three point defeat on them . Conversely Richmond Central i cl my selection proud when they defeated the inconsistent Old Geelong by sixty one pointsl Bullseye accurac y Balaclava enabled them to defeat Salesian College by four points despite the Salesians having six more --oring shots . To complete a black day for me St . Kevins inflicted a twenty nine point defeat on CBC St . Kilda . State Bank had the bye, GTV9 last Sunday scored its first 1989 victory when the Television City side finished :: ,nty four points in front of Powerhouse . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Old Xaverians annihilated Banyule by the huge margin of two hundred and six points . The University Blues & Whitefriars game was played in a fluent style and revealed many of the features of Australian Football . At e final siren Whitefriars were in front by sixty eight points . Old Paradians Green proved me a poor tipste r ::'hen they were able to defeat fourth placed Ormond by seventeen points after a fairly high scoring game. Old Haileybu ry powered to percentage boosting win over a disappointing Collegians by one hundred and twenty ,ne points. De La Salle~Iue bounced back from their reversal last week to defeat Marcellin by one hundred nd twenty points . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Old Paradians Purple quickly forgot their drubbing in Round 3 as they were able to defeat Melbourne High School Old Boys by fifty six points. Although Old Brighton Grammarians more than doubled the Bulleen Templestowe score in winning by sixty one points the Grammarians had to work hard for their victory. North Old Boys tastd their first victory with a vengance when they won by one hundred and thirteen points over Monash Blues . St. Bernards maintained their unblemished record when they accouned for Therry by thirty one points. In the surprise result of the round Old Melburnians won their first game of the season when they disposed of the previously undefeated University Blacks by forty five points. Old Scotch moved to the section leadership Caecause of this result and through their own defeat of a disappointing Caulfield Grammar by one hundred and twenty four points . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Mazenod continued to stake their claim on sectional honours when they had another big win . This week 'ney vanquished Thomastown by one hundred and forty one points. Fawkner justified some of their club's early optimism when they over-ran St . Kevins to win by one hundred and sixty two points . A similar result was obtained by Old Trinity who defeated Bulleen United by one hundred and ninety eight points . For the second successive week Parkside gave their supporters palpitations as they played an exciting match . Their winning THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989 7
nargin over Aquinas was two points - half that of Round 3 against Thomastown!! De La Salle Gold conso l their position in the top four when they defeated Albanvale by thirty six points . Third placed Hampton IT;overs received a walkover from Ivanhoe. V, REVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED MAY 13 1989 - ROUND 5

G SECTIO N With the benefit of four week's form to guide me my selection success score should improve - it can harcn worsen! [
Leaders Kew should prove too talented for Old Melburnians despite the OM's success last week . t e La Salle who let me down last week, will face another stern test from the Old Xaverians. After a bad week 7, Xavier footballers I expect the Crocodiles to "sursum corda" (lift up their hearts) and defeat De La Salle hat Bulleen Templestowe have regained some of their 1988 stars they will offer a serious challenge t o.t opponents . Today against St . Bernards they should lay down a serious challenge although I favour the Saints to win narrowly. Although cDCollegians have not been able to sustain their early form I expect they will be ab' to defeat Marcellin today at Albert Park . Old Scotch should be able to retain their position in the leading brac- ;; by defeating Monash Whites today while traditional rivals Port Colts & Bloods will meet in the main G Sectio' game . The Colts have done well this season while Bloods lowered their colours to Kew. I suspect the D :oods will be the fitter side and sonsequently expect them to win after a hard contest .
V.A .F.A. ADDS NEW SPONSOR TO ITS LIST national Real Estate Company Baillieu Knight Frank has joined the list of sponsors of the V.A .F.A . i I :night Frank, which is Australia's oldest and largest commercial Real Estate company has loine d
ize Sponsor. 5man for the company, Paul Lachal - Director, added "It's great to be involved with the V .A-F an d rard to a long and mutually rewarding association" .
H SECTIO N Two of the most inconsistent sides in the competition Old Geelong & Therry meet on Como Park . The Islr ; ground will test the side's stamina as well as their game skills . With no great confidence I select Old Go<aori . Another unpredictable Side Balalava meets leaders Richmond Central at Albert Park . All points to another Richmond success which although I predict may be upset by one of those outstanding but scarce Balaclava performances . State Bank on Oval 4 should be able to defeat CBC St Kilda especially on the Saint's fornast week . Nothing is certain in H Section except the unexpected so I won't be surprised if the visitors win . St. Kevins should remain in the top two by being able to defeat Powerhouse by a comfortable margin . At home i expect Salesian College to prove too fast and too talented for GTV9. Kontias has the bye.
incidently, is the brother-in-law of past General Manager, Peter French and Peter adds that Paul wa s omplished Amateur footballer Paul commenced his career with Monash University Under-19, then a few with Old Xaverians and finished his days with Old Melburnians with a stint on the OM's committee . hope Paul can meet up again with his football colleagues but we understand he's now more at home gold course. Watch out in October at the V.A .F.A . Golf Day - he'll probably take out the money ! f anyone wants to talk residential, commerciaL hotel, tourist, industrial . . . in fact Baillieu Knight Fran k
e the TOTAL service . . . give Paul Lachal a call on 602 5722 , ome Paul and welcome Bailheu Knight Frank to the V.A .FA . Sponsor Group,
UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Old Haileybury will make another great trek north to Banyule where the young Bloods should experience little difficulty in winning well . In the main game Old Xaverians journey to the far east to challenge leaders Whitefriars . Despite the Xaverians recent good form I select Whitefriars to win well . Ormond who falterea a- week at home should atone today at the expense of "cellar dwellers" University Blues who have yet 'o win a game as their football success has not matched that obtained academically . I expect De La Salle Blue to prove too talented for Collegians who are not playing as well as their early season form indicated . Marcellin travelled to Bundoora with the knowledge another defeat could wll leave the Eagles among the "also rans n 1989 . Their opponents Old Paradians Green have won two successive games and seem destined to make t three in a row today at the expense of Marcellin .
ilst we are on the subject of sponsors we also welcome three new Race Day Sponsors -
o P ston MBOB Handicap Sponsor, R & M Shopfitters (Mark Walkley) . _' Melburnians Handicap Sponsor, A.C . Goode ( Geoff Webb) . Whitefriars Handicap Sponsor, National Mutual Trustees ( Bernie Hoy) .
UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Melbourne High School Old Boys & Old Melburnians meet in a game of "the two cultures" . The result will leave the loser floundering and the winner challenging for a top four place . It is difficult to draw comparisons yet as the two homeground vary so much in size and the comparative strength of the opposition cannot yet be gauged accurately. While the OM's distinguished themselves last Saturday, I lean towards Melbourne High to win narrowly. I expect North Old Boys to win their second game at the expense of Bulleen Templestowe. Terry Mills will need to keep his player's concentration levels high or else the competitive Bulleen Templestowe led by captain Angelo Pulverenti could well cause an upset . University Blacks should return the winning list at the expense of the disappointing Caulfield Grammarians . In the main game today the only two undefeated sides Old Scotch & St . Bernards meet in Yarra Park . Scotch who are an impressive side are my selection because of their team balance and skill level . Monash Blues at home should be able to win against Therry and thus be able to stay within reach of the leading sides . Old Brighton Grammarians will be at home to Old Paradians Purple. The home side must not allow their concentration to waiver or else the Paradians could snatch victory. Williamson in the ruck should prove a difficult man for Parade to check while Devine & Howden are two sure avenues to goal for Old Brighton . I cannot see Old Paradians Purple being able to win . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Thomastown who have displayed a lot of skill and competitiveness should be able to win comfortably over Bulleen United who have not started the season on a winning streak . Mazenod will receive a severe test from Hampton Rovers although the Rovers with two walkovers could lack match fitness. Mazenod should prove equal to their task . How they win and by how much will be of interest to all opposition sides . Aquinas make the long march west to play Albanvale whose recent results indicate adjustment to Amateur Football standards . Providing Aquinas field their full side I favour them to win but an upset would not surprise . De La Salle Gold should consolidate their place in the four by defeating St . Kevins who are not proving competitive this season . Old Trinity will be tested by Parkside's strengths and skills . However the superior Trinity fitness could carry them to victory. Fawkner appears to be gaining in depth and skill so I believe they will be able to score another impressive victory at the expense of Ivanhoe. 8

Cr.) . 15 YEARS AGO - 1974 Poor kicking for goal by North Old Boys left them trailing St Bernards all day but they got to the front in the last term only to have victory slip from their grasp when St Bernards drew level with a goal kicked after the final siren . Best were Santamaria, Schwarzenberg and . M ahoney (St Bernards) and Joss, Scalon and i ' (North Old Boys) . Hampton Rc,v, . ) crushed Old Ivanhoe by more than 9 goals in inflicting their first defeat . Leeming, S . Huc k , Vickers (H . Rovers) and Goldin, Smith, A . Hang ( Ivanhoe) were best . Colin Glover played his 232nd game for De La Salle, breaking a club record previously held by Vin Pilkington . 100 games to Peter Gartner (M arcellin), Alan Young (H . Rovers and 150 to Bob Tormey (De La Salle) . 20 YEARS AGO - 1969 Coburg continued with their great form with an 8-goal win over Collegians , and were undisputed leaders . Best were Warfe, N . Collegians swamped Blacks in the final term, kicking 8 .1 to 3.0. Rogan, Powell, McDonald (Coll .) and B. Roet, Ballaam, M . Roet ( U . Blacks) wre best in a high standard game. 50 GAMES : e'i OGS Old Geelong congratulates R oss M cDonald on reaching his 50th game for the club last week . 2oscoe has been around for a number of seasons, but occasional injuries and bouts of R & R have prevented him achieving the half century earlier . Roscoe's contribution to the OGS has been recognised this season by his appointment as Reserves VC ., although the 50th came when playing in the H Section side, helping them to an historic 20 goal win .
Well done Ross, and we hope to see you back in the 2nds soon, having recovered from your recent trip . DOVETON SJO C Congratulations go to Doveton SJOC Captain! Coach Keith " N igger" Wilson on attaining his 50th game at the Power Reserve. In his fourth season, and second as coach, Nigger has proven a capable utility player, with plenty of senior experience, and is successfully combining the contribution he makes to Doveton at all levels with rearing his own herd of future footballers (and Meaghan) . Also on Fifty Games of blinding dazzle is Amateur Footballs answer to Warwick and Dermott, Doveton's own Ian Parker. Parkes also doubles as Doveton's SJOC social and fashion trendsetter and equally shining on the wing or flank. Although strong opposition is predicted for Parkes in the 'Glow in the Dark' stakes .
A special scoop is planned for a Doveton player in next week's Pars Pars pages. "FR E DDY'S REVENGE " With a head like something out of Nightmare on Elm St . Fred "Junkyard" Khalil plays his 100th game for Heatherton today. Fred started playing with H .F.C. In 1982 and after winning a reserves B & F he is now a regular senior player with his straight ahead style of play. Not only a regular at training "Junkyard" is also a regular at H .F.C . social turns, where he is often seen dancing like a black and white minstral . "Fred'sclaim to fame in life is that lucky boy licorice use his head to promote their goods. "Junkyard" is now on a self inflicted diet of beer and pizzas which could well explain why he has an attraction to 20 stone women which he often "dates" .
From everyone at Heatherton well done "Junkic we look forward to your next 100 games and your pie eating exhibition . 0 . BRIGHTON Allen 4, Pryor 2, Cooper, Fisher . Grant. C.Smith, Templeston, Waddington, BEST Brook, James, Cochran . Lade. Barber, Woff

PerSonallty Pars SALUTE TO OLD SCOTCH U19's Any side that can post thirty goals on the board deserves a mention . Old Scotch Under 19's did it in grand style against Old Paradians last Saturday . t:Vorthy o note in a super team effort, were the nerformances on Andrew Cowper, who likes to see double centuries come up on scoreboard! And the goal kicking of Richard Winneke & Nick Howell, he latter working on a new kicking style . Consideration is being given to a new innovation to the game - Taping of the mouth! to eliminate those little journeys to the fence due to the colourful use of the English language by certain players . MISSING OVERNIGH T "Curls" Cuttriss, "Paz" Parry, "Bash" Bashford and "The Coach" were discovered on Sunday morning locked in the Old Ivanhoe clubrooms, still all talking at once, after being left that way Saturday night. All four had vacant looks in their eyes, but the jaw functions were still 100 per cent okay ! 50 GAMES TO "HEWIE" OF OLD PARADIANS All at Old Paradians congratule Paul Hewett on playing his 50th game today for the club, against Ormond . Hewie joined the Club as an Under 19 in 1985, but played all his games that year in the senior ranks . He has been a valuable player all these years, and this year has been playing at his best with a firm grip of his position in the senior tea,m . Had he not taken a rest from football in 1987, he would have played his 50th game much earlier. Hewie is wished the best of luck to maintain his present form and fitness for the rest of the season, and for many more season to come . CONGRATULATIONS FROM BANYULE Banyule Football Club would like to congratulate Dean Turner and Clare Murphy who announced their engagement on 19th April . Dean is a committee man at Banyule who was Social Secretary for the last two years .
FARWELL TO MARS AT BRUNSWIC K Last week Brunswick said goodbye to Lars Cordes who played his final game for the year before taking off on a trip to Europe . Lars has had a very distinguished career with the Club . He has been a spectacular player, always guaranteed of giving 110% effort . He will leave a big hole in defence that will be hard to fill . We wish Lars all the best and a safe trip to Europe . The door will always be open when he returns . The Club organised a function to wish him bon voyage and welcome anyone back who has played with Lars or knows him well . CORRECTION TO "OFF THE RECORD " In last week's "Off the Record", we read that Ivanhoe had played Old Haileyburians for the first time ever . The clubs had, however, met before in 1975 and 1977 .
Next Week Matche s

TWO FIFTIES FOR YOUNG BLOODS Peter Merrett and Allister Mytton have slipped quietly past the 50-game milestone for Old Halleyburians . Both are solid members of the reserves team at present, although Al has played a number of fine matches in the senior team, where his exceptional pace over the first few metres has left many an opponent flat-footed . This pace has made him an obvious choice for the wing since he joined the club n 1985. Quiet but constructive, he is a dangerous opponent because of his ability to open up the play n a mere blink . He is also one of the few players at Old Haileybury not to have acquired a nick name . There has been no such problem for Peter "Tangles" Merrett, so named a couple of years ago by then under-nineteen coach Max Lyon . The straightforward backman with the awkward but effective leftfoot kicking style joined us in 1986 with twin brother Dave, who is now nursing a broken arm . Peter has continued the club's dynasty of optometrists, after 1970's defender Peter Cunningham and, more recently, "Southa". He has also shown himself to be a big name player through his performances in last year's unsuccessful reserves Grand Final and the 1987 under-nineteen finals series.
2 MILESTONES AT BRUNSWICK Ross (Roscoe) McKissack - 50 Game s Congratulations to Ross McKissack who plays his 50th game for Brunswick today against Old Geelong . Ross, recruited from Banyule, has been a great asset to the club, both on the field where at full back (and ruck) for the reserves his steady play has seen Ross figure in the B & F Awards, and off the field where Ross is the club's current Secretary . All at Brunswick congratulate Ross on his 50th and hope there are plenty more to come.
Dayson Carroll - 50 Games Brunswick's Dayson "Scoop" Carroll, plays his 50th game for the club today and is congratulated from all at Brunswick. Dayson has developed into one of Brunswick's most consistent players . Dayson has also become actively involved in the Club by becoming the poor man's Scott Palmer; and leaking vital information . Still a relative youngster, there are many good years left in Dayson and we expect to see him around for quite a while yet ; and keep on ounching . Congratulations Dayson sorry "Scoop" from all at Brunswick .
