Personality Pars TO OL E All at Old Paradians extend congratulations to Michael Sk '_t on playing his 50th game for the club, on 20th May 1989 against Parks! I has the distinction of being the captain of the only premiership team of Old Paradians Junior Football Club, in Under 16, as the Junior Section since then has been amalgamated with St Damians Junior Football Club. M ichael also represented the Club Premiership Team in 1986, and the VAFA team in the Interstate match in 1987 . Hopefully he will be in the VAFA Representative Team this year as well . Best wishes to Michael for a very successful 1989 season and the many seasons ahead, in reaching his next milestone at the club . 2

JP FOR BEDA PUPS Two of our is, strapping pups in Tick "show us your c : :'i " Beasley and , 1 . "leave us the crurr' . •" M cColough have notched up 50 games for the Bedas . Aimost too young to shave, these boys have been a driving force behind the Bade revival and an insp :ration for the many other "Baby Bedas" that have loined the club this year. One of five brothers playing for St . Bedes boasts an obsession to be just like "the I g r . ,; . n Tigeriand . . . Laffy" Mick has his own style of "midair" aerobics which have seen him thrill the crowds on numerous occasions. Coupled with those explosive dashes from the backline and prodigious drop punts into attack Mick has proved to be one of the Bedas top performers this year . N athan . The proud wearer of the famous "No. 7" guernesy is the beneficiary of all the football skills which make up the game. When his talents are put to full use Nathan become a formidable opponent for any player. N athan is also the recipient of another gift - one that "Baiter" and "Petti" obviously missed out on . On Saturday nights you can usually find Nat accompanied by many Beda team mates, all of whom would be very grateful with just the crumbs.

sweep for the villain . 5 out of 5 winners suggests this tipster is back ru nis nest . Ormond showed the other teams that they have arrived back' after a very impressive win against Collegi<,ns k I,st Sunday. Ormond led from start to finish and really gave the Collegian selectors much to think pecially after M ark Hibbins, back from overseas and Simon Williams played in the 2nds Ormond's scotty Taylor, although erractic at times, played his best game for the season, as did Paul Schuh k raft (7 goals) , a welcome sign for the State selectors . Justin Clarkson once again played a very consistent game ands . Collegians best player, M att Galbraith has had a great season to date, winger Greg Tregea r stralian full back, R i chard Schober, were the pick of the rest . old t=-radians beat Parkside in a tough physical game by 4 points that had both sides supporters wishin g = Old Paradrans hung on in the last quarter kicking 2-7 to °<r ; ' ''s 3-5 to run out narrow winner s Dominic Spillane played a sensational game at centre half back . Old ' ans' centreman, M ark Beers . ~-d on his good form, as did State U19 Captain, Damien Angove (congratulations) Parkside's best iar k Sedgwick, really dominated and Red Devils' M . Consistent, Nino Vincitorio played his usua l ame. Marcellin led from start to finish to thrash a disappointing Kew at Vicinrra Park by 99 point . Kew after thei r in over Parkside the previous week would have goen into this game with confidence, but this was not _= case as Marcellin, kicking against the wind in two of the last three quarters, added 20-10 to Kew's M arcellin on ball player Simon Lennox played a superb game, as did rover Freddie Battistella kept no the ball forward, where Tony Caffry (7 goals) was a major influence on the game . Mark Stapleton . I his first senior game, contributed (5 goals) . Kew had many good triers, none better than Adria n Jenkins who is having a fine season . Brett 'Bomber' Burden returning from injury was another player wh o . -aantly to lift Kew, but to no avail . M att Cavanagh, also returning from injury, had a good game with ng thrilling the crowd . University Blues trailing for the first three quarters produced a sensational final quarter kicking 7-6 to Old Scotch 2-0 to record their fifth win of the season, and they go 1 game clear . Old Scotch are yet to recor d away from their home ground . Uni Blues' ruckman, M ike Yandell, dominated the ruck, Captain Joh n !Ar Recruiter' Kanis (5 goals) was a welcome return to form . Defender Graeme Hazeldine and ruck rover !,1ark fblcCarty continue to show out . The Cardinal's ruck rover, Brian Hodge is also in great form . Brian ha s ( ~ best season to date. Forward Rohan Adjard (3 goals) was lively all day as was winger Andrew Smit h " : ptain Rob `Frosty' Fuller. Peter Brown turned in a serviceable game . North Old Boys led at every change to record a 20 point win over Old Xaverians . N orth Old Boys kicke o goals in the second quarter to lead by 25 points at half time. Old Xaverians fought back in the secon d ing 6-7 to North Old Boys' 5-8, but North hung on to notch their fourth win of the season . North Old Boys' best player was defender Steve Moloney. Centre half forward, M arc Boyd, played another strong game !,licha=l9iedley played a serviceable game. Young Peter Gayfer was also prominent . Captain, Chris Mortenson . r) lift his young charges as did M ichael Brennan . Young rover Paul O'Sullivan is a player of the future Rob Visentini is another former U19 player that is having a good season . All in all N orth Old Boys were to o =-rienced for Old Xaverians, and thoroughly deserved their win . i the Match of the Day Old Paradians travel to Marcellin in what should be a great match . Old Paradians ~~~~,Tlgled to shrug off Parkside last week, and they will mist their State players . Marcellin by 11 point s Ormond visit Parkside for the first time in Senior football . Ormond will miss their State representatives . The Red Devils were very stiff to lose against Parade last week. At the Park last Sunday Ormond were very impressive g Collegians. Even with 6 State representative missing this week they should have too much experienc e Parkside . The Monds by 19 points . North Old Boys had to work hard for victory last week, which I believe will hold them in good stead for today's aportant clash with Kew. North Old Boys by 29 points . Uni Blues were not impressive in beating the Cardinals last Saturday . Their opponents Old Xaverians . wh o ; utting their faith in youth, will be keen to do well . Will Meehan (OX) be able to hold Yandell? Old Xaverian s give all, but the young boys lack the experience of their opponents . Uni Blues by 39 points . Old Scotch take on Collegians in what could be an exciting game . The Cardinals are good at home ( 3 from 3), and I expect Scotch will give Collegians the fright of their life . Can the Lions recover from thei r tiling of last week? I believe the Lions will be more desperate. The Lions by 15 points . At home I seleci anyule in what could loom as a danger too good for Olt us t As predicted, the tiping in B Section last week did prove to be a nightmare . Next Saturday Old Trinity play St Bernards at St James Park. Trinity should be confident after inflic Old Brighton's first defeat last week while St Bernards worked hard to defeat Uni Blacks and should be to string together a few wins . Old Brighton' kicking cost them dearly but Trinity showed great fight to the points . We've seen both these teams this year and we feel St Bernards might just have the edge. De La Salle play Old Brighton at De La. This game has lost a bit of its build up with Br', , d A number of injuries has restricted Brighton who will struggle to contain the consistent Shee ay , Mullins . Paul Woff, with the help of the giant, James Tonkin, can hopefully lead the way with sup the two Smiths and Brook . The loss of Allen at full forward is a blow but we'll stick with Brighton to cause an L Monash play Old Melburnians and the Uni Boys put the Bucchan Bros. right out of business by be-Favrkner last week and as out tip was based on Brad Cornwell's information it looks as though we fell fc sting . Redback was the best player for the Sky Blues . Thanks Brad . Today, Monash takes on Old M . . I rn ; at the Uni which looks like being the best match . Rick "give me more superlatives" Pisarski handed ovF spotlight to the W itts brothers last week . Unfortunately, the OMs revival went onto the back burner. At the met = we'd love not to tip either of these teams but OlMs defeat by D e La might not be any disgrace so we'l l Navy Blues , Bulleen play Fawkner after probably their best performance of the year last week . Unfortunately, the EiTs won't give the boys from out west any joy this week so its Bulleen for ours . Last match for the week is between Therry and the Blacks . Therry must have been shocked by the :-,Ts tenacity last week but need to win this one to stay in touch . This week's predictions : Old M elburnians to defeat Monash St Bernards to defeat Old Trinity Bulleen to defeat Fawkne r Old Brighton to defeat De La Salle Therry to defeat Blacks

As previously stated the amateur ranks has grown too quickly and I believe an offshoot to this is that C Section hgs not received the quality of umpires that it should . The higher grades have two good umpires each v se' I believe a rotation of umpires should extent to our section considering the standard witnessed, to improve I f overall picture of Amateur football . As the competition expands, so too should the better umpires! After round 6 Preston have now proved to be a good combination downing Caulfield and retainin n position on the ladder. The fourth spot is up for graps and on-form Balaclava look strong enough . - .' " and Banyule remain on top and relegation is looming for the bottom three . Personality Par s M ILES OF MILESTONES AT BALACLAVA The past weeks have seen several Balaclava players notch significant milestones . 150 Games - Rob M orrison & Mark Taylo r 100 Games - Kevin Angwin & Anthony Breslin 50 Games - Tim Hill & Hayden Dickso n Rob "Morrow" M orrison would have achieved his 150th game last year if he had not decided to go on holidays (what??? holidays during the footy season?) Rob was a member of the 1984 E Section Premiership side and currently holds down the full back spot in the Rozzies . However Morrow has always been on call for the seniors when need be . M ark "Gumpy" Taylor celebrated his 150th game the same day as Morrow when he came out of retirement to help a depleted reserves side in their game against Old Haileybury . Mark made his debut in 1979 and was a regular in the seniors until studies curtailed his training schedule . Mark has been a committeeman and was secretary for two years . A fine sentre half forward/back in his day and was a good kick for goal when his contacts were is straight (unfortunately not often!! ) Kevin "Choonky" Angwin celebrated his 100th Reserves game Coops, sorry Kev, 100 in the Reserves) against Ivanhoe recently. He later turned out for the seniors the same day and enjoyed is immensely. Choonk started at the Club in 1977 but after a couple of years went and played for De La Salle and Moorabbin . As our eloquent President stated last week Kev has more jumpers than the M .S.D . Kevin returned in 1985 and finished runner-up in the B & F but went one 12
better the following year and also played in the D Section Premiership side that year. Tim Hill played his 50th game last week ag un Hampton Rovers. Tim joined the club in 1986 <_ a scruffy, untidy looking 19 year old on the field ar l last week played his 50th as a scruffy, untidy Icok r
22 year old . Although Tim may look haphazard cl,~ the field, some of his exploits on it are graceful (ar he'll tell you about them, for sure) . Two miracle gc against Thomastown last year virtually kept the CIu! in C Grade. Tim has gone on to become a vital c in the Balaclava machine. This week Anthony Breslin celebrates his iOCTi game. Anthony started in 1984 and by the time t was 19 had played in two premiership side "Conan", as he is known around the Club, astouno everyone at the club with his skills, especially his abi ; and his low stab-passes ar eltokicwhbfe sight to behold . Anthony is a rather quiet young fello : . but can always keep the rest of the club entertainea with his nocturnal deeds, particularly after social turns . Seniors Vice Captain Hayden Dickson pla}s h> 50th game today against Banyule . Dikko joined the club in 1986 and immediately played in a premiership side, Hayden is one of the ost popular identiti= around the club, even though he barracks for Essendon (a silly thing to do in a nest of Saints supporters) . Dikko has carried the rucks for the last two years and shown to all at Balaclava that tl courage is unquestionable . From everyone at Balaclava we congratulate the: players on their achievements and hope that these players can add many more games .

CLUB MAILING LIST - The Untapped Area of Club Marketing ! . 3 ry Club I know will say that they have a decent mailing list . .- but does this list really cover everyone has played or been associated with your Club from, say, the last 20-30 years ? ~°mber those players, officials and supporters some 20-30 years ago who were really staunch Club Members , r_!ally 'put-in' both on and off the field to make your Club the great Club that it is today . tend to believe that most of them sneak a look in The Age or Sun every Monday from the 'Amateur Football' Its to see how their old team performed on Saturday. :':'ell in marketing parlance, they wre once a Primary Target Group for all your Club fund raising efforts 20-30 s ago, well now they are a Secondary Target Group . . . and should be treated as such . if tour Club hasn't already done so appoint a'Club Mailing List Director', with the brief for him/her to produce ailing list that should include all those associated with your Club for the last 20-30 years . (Some Clubs will back even further. )
Sounds simple but where do you start and how do you get up-to-date addresses, phone numbers, etc . Well, not simple, but requires lots of patience and using the system of idetworking . First of all I suggest the Director appoints a series of Decade Captains ; i .e . a person responsible for each ade, say pre 1950, 1950-60, 1960-70, 1970-80, 1980 plus . These people could be past Presidents, Secretaries, - .ptains or your Club stalwarts who really know everyone and have good knoweldge of Club history etc . These Decade Captains will then develop a list of players and supporters drawing information from the following : ® Past copies of 'Amateur Footballer' (refer VAFA office ) • Past Club Annual Reports ® Past Club newsletters o Past Club Photographs ® Past Club record s Follow-up from past addresses to business contacts to even advertisements in the local paper requesting following names to get in contact with the Club . Well . . . having now together a list of some 150-200 names, what do you do with it? Most will say 'hit them between the eyes' by asking them for a donation to the club . Smart Clubs will invite them to a`Free Past Players Re-union/Luncheon' preceding a major match . I say Free because you should spend a dollar to make a dollar! Get them to the function first and outline ways in which this group can assist the Club and what they can get back in return, e.g . 1 establish a Coterie Group for say $100 each, which entitles them to another Free luncheon and regular Club newsletters . Net profit to the club may be around $75 .00. That's $75 .00 from a person never gained before . - develop a mailing form listing all products that can be purchased via the Club - where the Club may receiv e a rebate back from the VAFA on total purchases from VAFA selected companies - viz : Cadbury Schweppes, Four'n Twenty Pies, Grover's Wines, James Dickson & Co ., Hugh Lyon (supporters jumpers) and so on . You would be surprised just how many people would support this Direct Club buying scheme knowing that they are buying at a good price for those products plus the Club is making money . With the list, current players on a Thursday night could be given the job of delivering the goods and meeting the former Club "greats". Come on, give it a go . . . it's a long term exercise, but once completed should provide your club with funds that have never been accessed before .
