intries problems ! asults were predictable . In the match of the day Marcellin gave notice that they will be a force in A Section , following an impressive display against Old Paradians last Saturday . The first half was fairly tight wit h Eagles leading by eight points at half-time. In the exciting third quarter Marcellin had their lead reduce d `s at three quarter time, but Marcellin showed their class in the final term kicking 7-7 to the Old Paradians o run out comfortable winners by 35 points . Best for Marcellin were ruck rover Fred Battistell (havin g ,2ar), defender Chris Carr and centreman Steve Psoras . For Parade, ex Fitzroy player Paul Zappa , i the centre did well, as did ruckman Brian Grills along with winter Tony Peyton . Ormond travelled to Pitcher Park minus 4 state representatives, and without knowing what to expect from Parksida for both sides were opponents for the first time in Amateur ranks . Ormond jumped away to an impressive ng Parkside wondering how good the M onds were. Ormond led the Red Devils by 64 points at the a break, and State (successful) coach Mike M cArthur-Allen must have thought it was Xmas . After half Ormond added the first three goals, and the loyal Parkside supporters were looking for cover, then the af came, mainly due to the excellent work of Parkside's rover, Mark Sedgwick, giving the forwards firs t toe ball . Parkside saved some pride to eventually lose by 82 points. Ormond's best player was full forward Brad P.iadden 10 goals (not a bad replacement for Schuhkraft), Steve Grace showed excellent pace and has amented a permanent place in this side . Paul McDonald had an excellent battle with is opponent Marc Bradley, who was the pick of the Red Devils' big blokes, rover M ark Sedgwick was in scintillating form, his -_ ; ;[rd half was unbelievable. Captain M ark Sturgess was another to give all . Nariil Old Boys at home were big winners over a gallant Ke w by 88 points. Kew matched North Old Boys , first half to be trailing by only 17 points at half time . North Old Boys took charge after the long brea k . ng 14.5 to Ke w 's 2 .5 in a powerful display of football . North Old Boys were missing seven regular senio r is, which forced coach M ark Hanneberry to take the field, and showed what excellent depth they have . afield for North Old Boys was centreman Steve O'Rourke, defender Michael Hedley continued his good aIso David Baher played his best game for the season . Rohan Atkinson (5 goals) was the best of the i ds. Kew's best player was backman Warren Keighran, along with Tony ` M r Knockout' Peric, who battled ~iaj in the ruck . Gino Kalac playing on the wing was another who could hold his head high , Uni Blues took on Danny Corcoran's young boys from Old Xavier. Uni Blues playing the better football ~ped Old Xaverians to race to a 47 point lead at half time. After the long break the students relaxed an d a-,od to play pretty football, and not the direct football they played earlier . To Old Xavier's credit they fough t e game right out, if they could play 4 consistent quarters of football Old Xavs will worry most sides with their .in and enthusiasm . Uni Blues rover Darrell Gust had a return to form being judged best on ground, Winge r Cullen Gunn has a good match, as did defender Andy Norman . Geoff Allardice played a strong defensive , me. Old Xaverians' best player all season rover Dan Meagher battled his heart out all day. Mark M cClelland ~s strung together a series of good games. Shane Leithlean was another who tried to lift the tenacious boys on, Old Xavier. Scotch playing on their favourite ground (at home) were not match for the impressive Collegian side . The t half was a close contest, neither side could get the upperhand . At half time the Lions led by 10 points. the premiership quarter the Lions slammed on 9-6 to their opponents 2-4 for a commanding lead at three -arter time. The Cardinals matched the Lions in the last quarter with both sides kicking 5 goals apiece. The Lions best player was winger Greg Tregear, who turned in his best performance for the season . Young ruckman Damien Phillips gave first use of the ball all day to the Lion runners who were able to feed Mark Hibben s goals) in his first senior game this season . Old Scotch make-shift ruckman Rohal Aujard performed admirably. `,I ow to Today's Games . I expect Ormond playing Marcellin to be the main match of the round . The Monds with their 6 state :Dresentatives back are starting to look awesome once again . Marcellin have performed better than most critics -ought, their enthusiasm is good, but playing the M onds at home is a daunting task, where the opposition ~e have averaged only 75 points per game, and for this reason I go for Ormond to win by 19 points . Collegians at home to Parkside will be looking for a big score, and will get it . The Lions, fresh frc, good win against the Cardinals last week will have far too much talent and speed for the disapp Devils, who found a determined Ormond side far too good for them the previous week . Parksi rr;,= „ more pace and improve their forward line if they are to be competitive . Parkside have not got a gooj against the Lions winning only 3 times out of 13 encounters, The Lions by 49 points . Old Paradians play No rt h Old Boys in what should be a thrilling game. North Old Boys cruisec comfortable win the previous week, where on the other hand Paradians lost to Marcellin . Only 1 win sep= both sides, but North Old Boys have the higheset points average in A grade . 117 points per game have -. . North Old Boys the tag of this years' quiet achievers . I expext North who will be able to field their sr~~team for the season to beat Old Paradians by 19 points . Kew play Uni Blues at Elsternwick Park . Uni Blues with talent galore should have a field day at the 7~ . Kew, who were very disappointing last week against North Old Boys, will find their oppc, :, 1andrecobigw a daunting prospect . Uni Blues, with 'gun' players on every line should record a comfortable win . Kew on too few, and more is expected from their better named players . Uni Blues by 59 points. Old Scotch take on rivals Old Xaverians who will be too strong and experienced for the young Old Xaverians, Scotch will welcome the return of state players, and this alone will give them the edge over Xavier. Xavier!, been only averaging 73 points per game, which is not enough to win . Coach Danny Corcoran has go- , a youth policy, but their enthusiasm alone will not account for the experienced Cardinals line up. The HOME TEAM have recorded 19 wins to the AWAY TEAM 16 wins . 3ompetition appears to be evening out with the top sides having to earn their wins from the lower clubs ;r, for success . Old Ivanhoe pushed top side Old Haileybury all day . St Kevins troubled Caulfield Preston's winning run came to a holt by a gutsy performance from Hampton Rovers. Banyule defeat Balaclava in a torrid affair with both sides attacking the ball fiercely . A match winning eleven rr ~m Tony "Tubby" Weston gave Banyule the ascendency. Youthful enthusiasm from Turnball, Saunders, Cameron, Pyers, West, Veal and Mills set up the win . I thought Balaclava could have troubled Banyule bu t

The loss drops Balaclava back to seventh place which .%,s a close tussle for that all important fourth position . Caulfield have been very disappointing, considering their potential . Last week they took three quarters to off St Kevins, to finally brake away in the final fifteen minutes to win by 28 po!nts . David Mathews boo'e o

A solid performance from the Hoes re desperate for a win - will it be today. Charlie Capiron starred upforward for St Kilda with 9 goal s ng all his magical skills . The home side will have their work cut out and De La should win If one easily .
The Blacks are struggling with more support needed for the young players that Kevin Morrison is bringing into the side . Nick Heath is playing well but he will need plenty of help against Trinity who are on a roll O'Shannessy will be after another bag after blitzing St Bernards and Trinity should continue on its winning wa. Brighton fought back magnificently last week, and will have gained plenty of confidence . James Tomkin's height up forward proved a great asset and at least one member of teh crew can kick straight . Marcus Barber has struck form and although Wo ff 's injury is disasterous for the Seasiders, they'll be keen to welcome Redback Cornwell home with a hiding and should win .

OMs at home will play the section's match of the day against Bulleen . Rick "Methusaillla" Pisarski has matured into an excellent full back and heads a defence that will keep the BTs working . Bulleen is creating plenty of scoring options and "Gofora" Rowe looked dangerous last week . It will be close but OMs will place ; he BTs progress on hold .
The Fawkner season is rapidly becoming a nightmare . They will win soon but this week the Therry hand :,all will create a few headaches for the Westerners . If teh Fawks can regain some of the form that showed at De La they will be in it for a long way. However, Therry look too slick at this stage . Predictions for this week are : Trinity to defeat Blacks OMs to defeat Bulleen De La to defeat St Bernards Therry to defat Fawkner Brighton to defeat Monas h 6

Last week's evenly matched games produced a couple of surprises which results in only a 600/6 accuracy this tipster. Thomastown inflicted the first real defeat of the season for Whitefriars by a convincing 32 points . It was nigh standard game that produced a total of 45 goals and showed that the Bears are perhaps worthy of a ~ot in the four after all . HE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

At Bulleen, Mentone came back from a 7 goal deficit at quarter time to win by 7 points. Neither all that well and it was really just the persistence of the Panthers that finally saw them overcome th e The two class veterans of the section, No rton ( Mentone) and Morley ( Bulleen) both played te, `or their sides, but that was about the only highlight.
Power House continued their inconsisstent form, this time for the better, with a 75 point win ove r inconsistent MHSOB. It's starting to look like "the Old Boys" can only win at home . State Bank kept within reach of the four after eventually overcoming an improving Elstern Camberwell put Ajax further into relegation territory by a comfortable 45 points . The big game this week will be at Mentone, who take on Thomastown . Rumour has it tha t are starting the long trip straight after training Thursday night . If they get away then the seconds shc, tnere with enough time to just warm up before the game. If the rain persists during the week, the groun nullify Thomastown's speed to give Mentone the points, but only I cbeprtyhavwisould Power House travel to Donvale and even though Evans & Co are kicking some big scores. the I<. have got some handy forwards like Pratt and Houston who should kick a few more . Old Camberwell vs Elsternwick is a real hard one to pick . The veterans at the Wickers like Bea : ,, , iotlE~r and Rosewarne have found some extra life, but I think the OCs, with their home ground supporters attendance, should have enough pace to get the points . Another close game will be MHSOB vs State Bank . The Unicorns have some class players in Come, . },1)i ; and Drummond whilst the Bankers are being best served by the more experienced Cloke, Dervan and Jenkins State Bank have let me down too many times, so we'll go for the Old Boys instead . The last game is at Albe rt Park where Ajax play host to Bulleen United . The Baby Bulls have lost tI tNo by less than two goals, whilst Ajax have suffered much bigger defeats . A win to the Bulls could see oack in the four and this should be enough for Coach Harrie to spur his playeres on to a much needeG The big question is, will Ajax have enough beer to satisfy the thirsty Bulls after the game ?
So, selections are : Old Mentone v Thomastown MHSOB v State Bank Whitefriars v Power House Ajax v Bulleen United Old Camberwell v Elsternwic k Any club contributions can be phoned to me on 429 3640 (H) or 490 5522 (W) .
E Section by Kevin McNicholl Another very interesting round completed with the expected close finishes and the odd upset . Lookin, th final scores we saw Wests easy winners over the struggling UHSOB 27.19 to 8 .8. St. Bedes were untroui,i _ against Peninsula and recorded a massive 33 .25 to Peninsula's meagre 5 .5 . Old Essendon put the bra on Aquinas recording a 5 goal win . No rt h Brunswick showed better form to soundly defeat Heathertc ; 12-1 ' to 12 .11 . Doveton recorded their 47th win and have perhaps exposed a few chinks in the armour of Bruns~ : who have yet to beat a side in the top half of the ladder. Final scores were Doveton 24 .11 to Brunswick 20.12 . The match between Old Geelong & La Trobe University lived up to all expectations with the first quarter provid', some of the most interesting football I have seen this year - scores level at quarter time - 6 .4 each . La Trobe led at the big break by 12 points, extending this to 18 points at 3/4 time . In a tough hard fought last quarOld Geelong could only manage 2 goals to La Trobe's 2 .5 and went down by 23 points . Final score La Trobe 16 18 to Old Geelong 14 .7.
This tipping business is not easy . Three out of six this week is pretty poor and this in a round when I expect( six out of six . It just goes to show that there are no such things as certainties especially in football . Doveton's win over Brunswick has thrown the battle for the four wide open . La Trobe and West Brunswick look! while St . Bedes have a four point break in third spot . Then we have four sides all with their eyes on the fouG : position . Today's round sees danger games for all four of them with a loss to Doveton, Old Geelong, Aqui° i s or Brunswick making their task just that much harder. Doveton face West Brunswick, La Trobe and St . des in their next three matches and wikll need to win at least two of those to stay in the race . O . Geelong have to face St . Bedes and need a win after three straight losses . Aquinas meet No rth, Heathe rton and Peni 3ula on the trot and must win all three to stay in touch . Brunswick are at home to La Trobe University and then meet West, Heatherton and St. Bedes and on current form could not be expected to win more than one or two of these clashes but will need to do more if they are to hold on . Other games see UHSOB at home to 0. Essendon but I think time may have run out for Old Essendon who would now have to win at least nine of the remaining eleven games to make the finals while Peninsula have the task of playing Heathe rton after their loss to North and this should prove too big a task for Peninsula . Likely winners this week, West Brunswick too strong for Doveton, Old Essendon to beat UHSOB. Old Geelong to win a close one over St . Bedes, Aquinas must win over Norths and this should provide the incentive for them . Heathe rton over Peninsula and La Trobe should have too many big guns for Brunswick . 8

Consistency - that's the key. It's what allows Deng Xiaopiing to say no ; it's what has given Italy 48 governments years ; it's the reason Brian tells you, Gra Gra fells you and Bondy sells you . It's what Mazenod and St And rews are all about . It's what other F-Troop hopefuls need to learn . The success of these players underscores the Noddie' s depth ; although President Gerry "After" Noone had to don the boots with the dew-kickers and after earning ossessions was carried from the ground by 15 team mates, whom he thanked volubly at the " afters". Gerry ,;reparing to send off his brother Paul "High" Noone at the Noddies big bash on June 24th - "Nod Rock" n music provided by top cover band "Mr Plod and the Big Ears". n other matches : the Brewers placed a large deposit on the Zedders to maintain their spot in the four ; Willy had a percentage booster against the Footrot Flat Boys who've had about as much success lately as Irene Bolger. Better performers for the Brewers were Rohan Hughes (brother of "Disco Chris"), "Life of" Brya n i Greg "DeeWhy" Dyson whilst Willy were well served by their following division and mobile forward line . irl the Sunday fixture, Reds displayed greater desire and team running to overwhelm the Waves by close 10 majors. Despite a great game by the Waves' Glen Ma rt in, the Reds withstood all challenges and ^ ;tratulated Doc, Doofus, Cooky, Mark Marsden Junior and John De Abacus on fine efforts. Player of the Round : Unde rt akers' ruckman Tony "Gorky" Park whose competitive spirit and stamina :ays keep the Unde rt akers in touch .

Other Games : The Waves to relish playing at home to win by six goals against the Banjos ; The Artists ne overcome at home to Willy by at least 5 ; Getta's Tellers to shout drinks after the Unde rt akers win by out 8 ; Ho Chi Minh to weep after the Harrys lift their rating slightly. G SECTION REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED MAY 27, 1989 - ROUND 7 Round 7 results were kind to me as I tipped the card . Leaders Kew maintained their record by beating Monash Whites by twenty three points . De La Salle proved no match for Bloods who won by seventy two poira, st Bernards and Port Colts both moved up the ladder as a consequence of their wins . St. Bernards by tr ; five points over Old Melburnians & Po rt Colts by thirty four points over Marcellin . Old Xaverians outpYa, Bulleen Templestowe and won by twenty two points . Old Scotch won well against Collegians by forty :points . H SECTIO N Three selections out of five proved correct . I was correct in forecasting that Kontias would defeat Power House - they did so by seventy two points. St . Kevins did defeat State Bank by seventeen points and Salesians were good enough to defeat CBC St . Kilda by thirty one points . I was way off the mark in my selection of Old Geelong as GTV9 outplayed them to win by forty three points . Likewise I was way out when unbeaten Richmond Central went down to Therry by twenty seven points . Balaclava had the bye . UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Two leading sides went down in surprise results in this section . Ormond thrashed undefeated leaders Old Haileybu ry by the surprisingly wide margin of one hundred and twenty eight points while De La Salle Blue overwhelmed Whitefriars and won by one hundred and eight points. Marcellin kept in touch with the leadir sides as a result of their fifty three point victory over Banyule . Old Xaverians did likewise when they outplay~ University Blues to win by one hundred and three points . Old Paradians Green kicked another mammc score en route to defeating Collegians by one hundred and thirty five points . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Round 7 results consolidated the positions of the top four sides and made the other eight sides' efforts! make the four more difficult . St. Bernards were too good for Melbourne High School Old Boys and v.,; by seventy points . Old Brighton had a big win over Therry who failed by seventy seven points . This was disappointing result at Therry's form in Round 6 had been so good . North Old Boys kept to touch with th= leading bracket when they proved too good for Old Melburnians and won by fifteen points . Old Scotch bounce . back after their Round 6 loss and defeated University Blacks by forty eight points. Bulleen Templestowe wc their first match for the season when they defeated Old Paradians Purple by sixteen points. Monash Blues virtually had defeated Caulfield Grammarians by quarter time when the Monash lead was eight goals . Caulfield showed some improvement in the second half before succumbing by one hundred and twelve points . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Aquinas surprised by defeating Old Trinity by thirty points . This was Trinity's first loss . Thomastown improveo its final's hopes by defeating De La Salle Gold by thirty four points . Leaders Mazenod faced strong opposition from Parkside before winning by only thirteen points which dropped the young Noddies' percentage by some twenty percent . Hampton Rovers consolidated their top four billing when they accounted for Fawkner by eight, seven points . The closest match of the round was that between St. Kevins & Albanvale in which lowly placed St . Kevins defeated sixth placed Albanvale by seven points . Ivanhoe defeated Bulleen United by thirty five points after United posted their best score by far, PREVIEW OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED JUNE 3, 1989 - ROUND 8 G SECTIO N Leaders Kew should be largely untroubled to defeat Collegians who have not won since April 15 . St . Bernards make the long trip to Clayton to play Monash Whites. As there is little between the performance rating of the sides I favour Monash to win because of the vaguaries of their ground and the effort required by St . Bernards players to arrive for the game . Although De La Salle have faltered of late I expect they will be strong enough to defeat Marcellin today. Only percentage separates Old Melburnians & Old Xaverians . I favour Old Xaverians because their form has been the more consistent . Old Scotch, at home to Po rt Colts should prove strong enough to win the game and thus consolidate their top four position . Bloods at home will prove too strong for Bulleen Templestowe in a repeat of last Season's Grand Final . H SECTIO N
I favour St . Kilda to win . The main match will be that between St. Kevins & Salesians . C oughlin Oval where will severely test the Salesians forwards whom I suspect may wilt under pressure. St . Another important game will be that between De La Salle Blue y the have g Orm o nd Both sides are playing well and shape as potential finalists . The winner today will have the easie r --, to the finals and I believe De La Salle Blue will prove to be that side. Old Haileybury should regain thei r o ways at the expense of University Blues who must be causing Frank Henagen more headaches tha n oi his previous charges . Old Xaverians chafing to regain a top four place journey out to Bundoora to mee t r„gh scoring Old Paradians's Green who are really playing well . The Xaverians big men will worry Parade Iii midfielder Dillon . Nevertheless the Bundoora bounce will be in favour of the home side whom I select to win . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 University Blacks should be able to return to the winning list by defeating Melbourne High School Old Boys Nhile I favour St. Bernards to prove too talented for the improving North Old Boys in the main Sectionn me: Old Brighton Grammarians will maintain the section lead by defeating Caulfield Grammarians o Oval 3 . Old Melburnians have a good chance of winning today against OId Paradians Purple who may lack sce and strength of the Old Melburnians . I favour OM's because the young Paradians have not done = of Iate. Old Scotch should be able to win again this time at the expense of Monash Blues while I favour Therry to return to the winning list at the expense of Bulleen Templestowe. UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Fawkner journey east to Bulleen United who must have a good show of defeating their visitors . Although - Fawkner forwards have the better record I sense a Bulleen United victory today. Parkside will push Hampton Rovers on Pitcher Park . Despite the fact they have won only twice they are a well performed side . I expect zrkside to win in the upset of Round 8 . Parkside proved last week that Mazenod are mortal and I expect Pat Sheedy to have a game plan designed to bring victory to De La Salle Gold . Despite Pat's plans I favour Mazenod - ,rin after a close contest . Two round seven winners meet at Macleod when Thomastown visit Ivanhoe. When ,7ged on the season to date Thomastown has the more impressive record and thus I select them to win . -Round 5 Albanvale defeated Aquinas by five points after a close contest. Last week Aquinas dshowed grea t r,, when they accounted for Old Trinity whereas Albanvale lowered their colours to eleventh placed St . Kevins. "ere is no logic in these results nor is there much to justify my belief that Albanvale will win again today. Old Trinity who travel to St . Kevins will be anxious to erase memories of their defeat last week . Despite St . Kevins Dod win last week, I favour Old Trinity to win convincingly.

Followers of amateur football are probably aware of teh club allegiances of three of the leading lights ° VAFA administration . General Manager, Phil Stevens (Old Haileybu ry) ; Administrative Assistant, Sue Anderson ( Hampton Rovers) and Andre Langford -Jones ( Old Haileybu ry ) are all keen to win the office C-grade footy tipping compet,c„ So keen, in fact, that loyalty went out the window" last Friday when Phil and Andrew tipped Ivanhoe and Q P tipped re ston to knock over their beloved teams . Apologies to Banyule's Peter Adams. Last week this colum stated that Ga ry Phillips was the only C-gr~,. . player to make the main VAFA side. Peter made sure everyone noticed he was around with an exceir~ performance and was one of the prime movers in getting the run into the Victorians after half time . ~tr * k
It is with plesure that this column announced that Bulleen Templestowe has claimed the prize of have played against the most number of VAFA clubs . The answer is 71 and Joh, Phil would prefer Sandy to corc down to claim the prize . **~The question is often asked : How are teams selected to play their matches at headquarters - Elsternwick Pat~ Over a 5 year period it is hoped that all teams in the higher grades at least will have played at Elsternwick Per . the same number of times . Eash side must give up the same number of 'home' games and this is importa because sides depend on 'home' appearances for vital fund raising activities like canteen, luncheons and the li- ; The next competiton which will carry a prize of a package of those famous CUB products is to correctly preo the names of the Victorians who make the Australian Amateur Football squad . Personality Pars 2 X 100 FOR OLD HAILEYBURIANS Today sees two of Old Haileyburians' grea t clubmen Greg Meadows and Bernie Ladds, play their hundredth games for the Club . "Meggsy" began his career in 1977 under Mike Porter and played for three seasons (54 games) in the first XVIII, a stint unbroken by injury or poor form . After the Bloods were relegated he joined VFA Club Sandringham, which must have been his big mistake, because he has been lucky to string together a long run of games ever since! At that time Meggs could boast tremendous fitness and enthusiasm, attributes which made him a valuable "B" grade wingman . His return to Haileyburian playing arms came in 1984, when he captain-coached the reserves to the finals - the year before he had guided the socials to a grand final berth. This year he has found himself as reserves supremo again, still in that woolly old number 12 jumper, surely the oldest in the club? He is well known on the committee for running assorted raffles and sportman's nights, and despite a slow start has now well and truly shed the bachelor tag . Also well known as a real estate agent of no small cunning, perhaps his major weakness lies in ethnic affairs ?
Bernie Ladds started his career in the undernineteens in 1982, but has caught up the 5-year gap between his coach . The Barry Round protege wearing the big number 56 was "sacked" as reserves captain despite leading the twos to the Grand Final last year, but is still the Bloods' best thing to Con th e 12
Fruiterer, especially now the hairline is drifting bac' a touch - beaudiful ! "Laddsy" has had a hard time of it this year, beirc a fanatic Carlton man, but perhaps the worst is over for him . He has set a wonderful example to other players over the years by so often acting as a willing and tireless helper behind the scenes too - something of great importance to every club . Bernie played his solitary senior game a couple of years ago, and no OHAFC player has worn the 1st XVIII winged heart badge with greater pride . The rest of the not inconsiderable Ladds family has played their part in the club too, including playing brother Chris and youngster "Andrew" who has run the boundary for the last three years or so. Bernie himself has been extremely versatile around the ground from full-back to ruck to centre half-forward - even oversized goal sneak! Well done boys . 50 GAMES FOR FUMBLES AT BRUNSWICK Brunswick take great price in congratulating Ian Campbell on reaching 50 games against La Trobe today. Fumbles first played with in in '85 and was a key member of our premiership side that year. Fumbles has proven to be a very versatile player whether it be in defence or attack or even in the ruck giving many inches away to his opponents, he always puts in a top effort, giving his all for the club. Fumbles is a popular personality at Brunswick and totally a team orientated player. Well done Fumbles and keep up the good work. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989
;ongratulations to Goalie, Bobby'Jane' Seymour, who passed the 50 game mark last weekend . Bob came athe VFA (109 games) and the Footscray District (54 games) . His umpiring experiences are duly noted . mer will find him adjudicating on the Sub-District cricket scene or on the golf course . Well done Bob . *,~* on't knokw who addresses Paul Krake's Match Report sheets but they recently turned up at the ANZ Ban k Williamstown instead of Elsternwick Park. Thanks to the astute Bank Manager for sending them back . c :entally, Paul had umpired the ANZ-Willy game that Saturday. Must have left a lasting impression on him . ,lice to see the umpires enjoy their `break' from their 'regular' training routines last week with visits to the Nunawading Swimming Pool where `Simmo' went under three times and came up twice and also to the FootscraY Institute for a spot of Ae robics. Great to see the Harris/Nugent combination on the dance floor. ,ey didn't know each other before they started, they certainly did by the time they'd finished . Thanks to Cliff Burns ( Nunawading) and Michelle Burns (FIT) for their cooperation and assistance . PS Michelle - Richard My Groin is Alright' Simon sends his regards . **~t Great shot of Steve Clinch in the Sunday Press . Heaven knows how the photographer had time to snap ~ such was the pace Steve was displaying at Old Scotch . Then again, every umpire needs a 'breather' a,e time. *~~k Further congratulations to Charlie `Golden Whistle' Sutherland on reacing the 50 milestone last Saturday. needs every game he can to help repay his Dad for crashing the family car 12 months ago . Personality Pars 100 GAMES TO PAUL SCHUHKRAFT AT ORMON D Ormond congratulates Paul Schuhkraft on olaying his 100th game for the club this week . Paul started his senior career at Ormond mainl y playing in the Reserve grade. However after winning [loth the 1985 and 1986 reserve grade B & F awards Paul has realized his full ability and potential and has s nce become one of the key players for Ormond reniors. He topped the'A'section goal kicking awards r both 1987 and 1988 with 90 and 72 goals respectively. His 1988 season was highlighted by the THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989
selection in the Victorians and Australian representative side . He was also a member of last weeks side which comfortably defeated S .A. Paul was a member of Ormonds 1987 and 1988 Premiership teams, and has also played in several reserve grade Premierships . A very quick and strong marking forward, Paul has become recognized, not only at Ormond, but in Amateur circles generally, as one of the most talented full forwards in the competition . Congratulations on your milestone today "Schuey" and all the best from all concerned at Ormond . 13

ROUND 5 - 5 YEARS AGO, 1984 Victoria were much too strong for South Australia, nning by 11 goals at Elsternwick Park . e team was BaG~~ythe (Bull/Temp), J. Griffin (NOB), N . 3urne (Old X) , H.Backs : M . Deveson (De La), N . Wilton (Old X), P 9rown (Old S . ) Centre : R . Marks (AJAX), C. Stone (Caulf.), B. Hodge ~Old S) H .Fwd : I . McMullin (Old Melb), R . Brown (Old Melb.) c. M . Hibbins (Coll . ) Fwds: S .McCooke (Orm .), D . Matthews (Caulf .), R . Zerbi (Kew) Rucks: M . Yeo (Uni Blues), J.Jones (Marc.) C., R . Senior (Old S .) . I/C: N . Bourke (Marc.), R . Demarte (Bull1/2Tem-p), t,1,Green (De La) . Best were Matthews (8 goals), Yeo, Hibbins, Jones, Smythe, Zerbi, McCooke. Coach was Laurie Aghan r;ith Ian Cordner as team manager. Umpires were Goodman, Urwin (Field), Vellerman, Hillier (Goal) and A Henry, Whitehall (Field). In 'A' Section Ormond kicked 13 goals in the second term against Uni Blues to set up a 99-point :~:in . Best were Naylor who dominated the ruck Eishold, Russell (Orm), and Tyquin, Yeo, Yeoman (Uni Blues) . 'A' Section umpires were King, Rosetto, Flannyer, Wiseman, Green, Wills, Woolley, Smith Tracey, Wilson . In 'C' Section Banyule kicked 7.7. in the final ter m ~o Hampton Rovers' 1 .2 to draw the game, 21 .12 each . Best were Marshall, Hetherington, Stewart (Hampton Rovers and Ladd, Legge, McKenzie (Banyule) . 10 YEARS AGO - 1979 No rt h Old Boys saluted Barry Anderson on his 100th game - best and fairest in 1976, North's A section Premiership and the club's best player in the finals series in three out of the last four years. Ron Barassi saw two Army teams play a game in Singapore in 1971 and said that only one man was good enough for League Football - hapless army conscript Barry Anderson . 350 games to Alphington's Peter Harris, whose achievements included best and fairest awards, coaching successes, premierships, life memberships and a V.A .F.A . Merit Award . Peter is now a member of the Permit Committee . 200 games to MHSOB's great little champion Ross Wood - skilled determined and with outstanding courage . Victoria went to Hobart hoping to regain that symbol of Carnival Football, the W.A . Trotting THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989
Association Shiled, lost to South Australia in Perth in 1970, and retained by that state in Melbourne in 1973 and in their home state in 1976 . Who captained Old Scotch? Stan Leek, after years of trying, finally kicked a goal for Brunswick . Victoria defeated W.A . on the first day 13 .20(98) to 10.14(74) in a game, notable for a strong finish by WA ., marred only by own inaccuracy. On the second day Victoria won easily defeated Tasmania and W.A. defeated S .A . 13.11(89) to 11 .10(76) in a magnificent game in which both teams showed superlative skill and courage. Victoria met S .A . in the final match and a loss to S .A . would have given a carnival victory to W.A . on percentage from Victoria and S .A . The team selected for the final game was : Halasa, Pisarski, White, Costello, Trumble, Welsh ; Marchesane, Blay, Borcich ; Bourne, Cordner, Sleeman ; Beddoe, Groves, Lewis ; Houghton, Dunn, Rice ; I/c McCooke, Yeo. The outstanding feature of the game was the closeness of the scores which put tremendous pressure on both defences - a single mistake might give the opposition the desired break and initiative. Scores at the last change were Vic . 3.15 to S.A . 3 .10 - continued next week . 15 YEARS AGO - 1974 After an even first half, Ormond ran right away from St . Bernards in battle for top place, and scored an easy win, 19.15(129) to 9.8(62) . R . Cameron, Wood (7) were the best for Ormond . St . Bernards failed to score in the final term . Ivanhoe continued their good form in 'B' with a 14 point win over Kew and held on to top position . Stars were Rojo, Callinan, R .Stewart ( Ivan .) and Mitchell, Dipierdomenico, Smith (Kew) . 150 games to John Kent (Power House), Roger Morgan ( O .Carey) and 100 gmes to Kevin Drinan (St . Kilda) Frank Sullivan, Gerard Smith (St . Bernards) Bill Daly (Assumption O .C .), Ian England (Old Carey), Nigel Sawyer (Old Hailey) . 20 YEARS AGO - 1969 Caulfield Grammarians suffered their second successive Defeat when they went down by 23 points to Uni Blacks with Gourley, Buston and Stevens starring for the visitors. U .H .S .O.B . held off a last quarter challenge from F.I T.O.B. who kicked 7.3 in the final term to go down by only one point. Ashmead ( 5 goals), D'Arcy & Wayne Taylor were best for the victors . Top score for the day was Old Camberwells 22 .16(148) against Elsternwick with main goalkickers 35
Hanson 7, Priestly 6 and Redman 6 . K .Wood and Hughes also played well while best for `Wick were Sharpe, Jim Sellers and A . Ramsay . B Section captains were G . Scott ( FITBO), Bill McWhinnie (Ivanhoe), Ken Middleton (Geelong), Graeme Boag (UHSOB) Trevor Gowers (Old Xavs), J . Egan (St . Kilda CBC), Ga ry Amott (St . Bern), J .Eastwood (De La Salle), Don Mullin (Kew) . 30 YEARS AGO - 195 9 In the B Section match of the day, played at Olympic Park, Hampton Rovers, well beaten medway through last term, fought back to go down by only 5 points . De La Salle were superior in the air but were outpaced by the nippy and elusive Rovers . Best for De La were: Dillon (it's been worth waiting for, Jack : NR(, Pearson, Gill, McCormack ( 3 goals) and for Rovers, McDonald, Grimmer, Shaw and Blainey. Ivanhoe conferred life membership on Bert Parsons, committeeman for over 10 years, goal umpire and timekeeper and recognised the very sterling service given to the club by Mrs . Ida Marcon by conferring on her the title of special honorary life member.
Veteran Kew player Ron Clarke, was forcEC] , retire, after 158 games, due to a serious leg injur , 40 YEARS AGO - 194 9 The Interstate game against South Australia at St Kilda Cricket G ro und on Kings Birthday lined up,,-. follows : BKS : Jane Brady, Bennie , H .BKS : Rowse, PMurphy, Sheehan, Centre : Granger, Arnold, M .Smyth, H .FWDS : Mellors, Birtles, Fitchett, FWDS : Ebert, Backhouse, Russel, RUCK : J . Cordner, Spencer. ROVER : B. Jud d 19,20 : J .Kennedy, S . Morris . Only 4 of the 20 were 6 feet or over . Victoria had a very easy victory, 15.18 to 3.8 Wit,, small men Ebert, Judd and Mellow outstanding in th~, heavy conditions. No much handball - only 23 for the game. Marketing News by Ray Sneddon
A SUCCESSFUL VAFA GALA RACE DAY A most enjoyable day was had by all who attended the 2nd VAFA/VATC Gala Race Day.
With major -ioy tivauu a vwu,aq, .,u~ u uuwn t~xecuuvet in ine auos well representea - tne ' nappy Hampton Group . building renovations being carried out at Caulfield this did not deter the Amateur football crowd 1 1 1 ation room . from turning out in force to witness a great day's racing . Only a handful of clubs supported the day by takin g
advantage of the very special arrangements in the Member's Reserve, but those club supporters enjoyed fine food, splendid wines, good company and, of course exciting racing . These 200 plus supporters must grow into, say, 2000 strong in future years for the VAFA to continue supporting this exclusive event . . . that's a commitment of approximately 30 people per club . Well that's something we'll be aiming for in 1990 ! Many thanks to the VATC, especially chairman (& ex amateur footballer) Peter Law rence, Vice-Chairmen Geoff Bellmai re and Sir Thomas North, and the hard working committee, public relations and marketing office Joanne Casey and promotions co-ordinator Ian McKnight, for making this day available to the VAFA and also for their generous hospitality on the day . Also a big thank you to our race sponsors, without them we wouldn't have a VAFA Race Day . Thanks to: Ansett Airlines - Di Deeming & Paul Downey R & M Shopfitters - Mark Walkle y Beaurepaires - Tim Grant CUB - Wayne Kent MSS Patrol Serv ices - Peter Taylor A .C. Goode - Geoff Webb National Mutual Trustees - Bernie Ho y Finally, to the VAFA person who makes everything tick along so smoothly and takes the brunt of all last minute administrative work, a big 'thank you' to Sue Anderson from all concerned . Just to finally wrap-up Race Day, our very keen race-going President, Jim Hawkins, found it a little difficult on ten day to shed his football mode . . . for he was head to say when handing over the VAFA cup to the successful connections, "And congratulations to the successful coach . . . er trainer . . ." Good to see where Jim's heart is even on Race Day. CLUB FUND-RAISIN G Just a mention in my column of the Kew Football Club "Auction Night" on Thursday 20th July at North Kew Football Rooms, commencing at 8 pm . Donations have already been received for auctioning on the night . . . VFL teams autographed footballs, Australian cricket team autographed cricket bat, Jeff Fenech's boxing gloves, interstate travel etc .
All VAFA supporters are most welcome to attend the evening and donations are still required for auctioning . If you can donate something of interest or want further information call Tony Gevauk on 859 6027. More next week . . . -el Rundle (Exec) presenting the Ansett sponsor troph y to the happy owner.

'BOZ' joined AJAX in 1986 from school and being rather tall by AJAX standards soon found himself in key forward positions or in the ruck, and it took him until last season to become a regular senior players . 'BOZ's' casual laconic attitude to life, as exemplified by his clothes, his car and his manner has in the past been a hindrance to his game . But this year, he has matured . His attitude is better and his ruck play has been superb. Congratulations BOZ, from all at AJAX on your 50 games . We look forward to the next 50 with baited breath. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Two Australian workers in every five can expect to suffer a major accident or long term illness in their wor ; life, according to major financial institution National Mutual . Yet very few Australians insure themselves to protect what is their most valuable asset - their ability to earr an income. Self employed business people should place income protection at the top of their financial planning list . "We find that this group, like most Australians, will budget for medical, household and car insurance but u 111 not have considered insuring against the possibility of being unable to work ;" said mr. Comley, General Manager Victoria . "Those running their own businesses should ask themselves this question : If my income stopped or w substantially reduced due to an accident or sickness, could I continue to support my family properly?" Under a disability insurance policy, such as National Mutual's Income Protection Plan, the business perso n can be assured of a weekly benefit of up to 75 per cent of his or her average weekly income (after deduction of business expenses but not income tax) while prevented from working through illness or accident . As well as full benefits, National Mutual can assist during the recuperating period by helping to boost any income shortfall with a recovery benefit . How do you decide the best and most appropriate disabioity cover ? Firstly, the business person must decide on the amount of cover needed to meet ongoing financial commitments . The bills don't stop because you have suffered an accident or are ill . Illness rather than accident, is by far the major cause of income loss . Sixty per cent of disability claims in the 35 year age bracket are due to illness, and that figure rises to 70 per cent for those aged 45 years . Recovery periods after an illness can also be lengthy, with approximately 30 per cent of the workforce expecte d to have at least three months off work due to illness or accident during their working life . "They should also consider the premium payment system, benefit period and qualifying period that suits them best, as these affect the amount of premium they will need to pay." Benefit periods also vary, ranging from two years through to age 65 . Worldwide cover applies 24 hours a day with no limit on the absence from Australia . And there are a variety of qualifying periods (the time prior to benefits beginning), ranging from two weeks to 26 weeks . However if you are hospitalised during this qualifying period the benefit is still payable after three days hospitalisation . The policy also included guaranteed minimum benefits for specified illnesses or injuries such as cancer, heart attacks and broken legs . Partial benefits are available if someone returns to work part time after having been on a claim . And if a person should die while on a claim, a further 10 weeks benefit is paid to help with funeral costs . National Mutual's Income Protection Plan includes a CPI-linked feature and premium payments are tax deductible . "It's one form of insurance no one should be without ;' added Mr. Comley.
50 UP FOR 'FIELDER` Paul "F roggy" Atkinson celebrated his 50th game against St . Kevins Old Boys Reserves . Paul played his first game for Caulfield Grammarians in 1986. He epitomises what amateur football is about with his enthusiasm and genuine love of the game . Well done 'Froggy'.

Personality Pars EX-POWERHOUSE PLAYER IN S .A . Victorian recruit Simon Phillips made a n
impressive debut with the Panthers against Sturt last Saturday. Phillips 20, a 178cm rover, is a former Victorian Teal Cup representative . Born in Patchewollock, Philips was being pursued by VFL Club Melbourne before signing with South . Phillips was the U15 Wimmera school-boy champion in 1984, made Victoria's Teal Cup team in 1985 and last season captained Victoria's U19 amateur team . Phillips was a part of a contractual dispute in Melbourne and decided to try his hand in Adelaide . He was originally signed by Essendon but played the first game last year for Carlton U19s . He spent the rest of the year with amateur league club Powerhouse and since then he has been eagerly sought by Melbourne . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989
