afternoon football followers . I have invited a special guest to contribute a special editorial . .al guest this week is John Fisher who this year coached the Australian Amateurs in the NFL Division recently held in Tasmania .

at the Australian Amateur Football team was comprehensively defeated by a talented, well prepared, and day, fitter Victorian Football +; ssocia on team n th A Grand Final of the recently completed National Footbal l 2nd Division Carnival, is disappointing However, Amateur footballers and supporters throughout Australi a a not feel any gwlt, devastation or humiliation by that defeat or by our team's overall performance . Despite nrficant winning margin in the final our players should be commended for their committed determination end . Although the VFA team was, on the day, clearly superior all over the ground they were unable t o more than six goals in any one quarter, and that, on a short ground, and in perfect conditions is furthe r nent to our players "never say die" attitude . The VFA are to be congratulated on their well deserved win . ver, several positive facts emerged for the Amateur cause and these should not be forgotten . This Amateur team was the first to have ever beaten a combined Tasmanian League team This Amateur team was the first to ever reach the final of a NFL Division 2 Carnival . a This Amateur team was the first to finish in front of all the other Division 2 Professional State teams viz •nsland, NSW, ACT and Tasmania, in a Carnival . ~ This Amateur team's entire "on field" preparation consisted of two training runs in Melbourne during the I up week to the carnival and a 20-minute warm up session in Launceston on the day prior to our first game `: aside, all other teams trained together as a unit for six to eight weeks prior to the Carnival .

• The players should be congratulated ! g The team was magnificently led by Robert "Frosty" Fuller (Captain), Hustin "Woody" Cook (Vice Captain), and Phil Kingston (Deputy Vice Captain), both on and off the field . They, together with their 22 teamtes, should be commended for their dedication during the entire campaign . Personally, I was extremely disappointed to read comments attributed to me in the Melbourne Press stating . i ng others, that not only was I "dejected" after the VFA match, but that I expressed an opinion that the Amateurs )uld never again take on the VFA . These notions are to say the least outrageous, a fabrication and are vigorously refuted . Let us acknowledge that the VFA are deserved winners of the 1989 NFL Division 2 Championship, however . : may not necessarily assist them in 1900 and beyond . The AAFC should be encouraged by their efforts finishing second on the championship table and look forward to the future with confidence . John Fisher. Coach AAFC

A SECTION by 'Dom "the 'Villain" Johnsto n

The 'Villain' lowered his high standard of tipping winners only scoring 4 out of 5 . Parkside was the tearr, that upset another perfect round (this was one mistake I could live with) . At the half way mark of the season one item clearly shows out : The Villain' is the best A Grade tipster for some time (this year at least! ) In the match of the day Ormond proved to all other final challengers that the Monds will be there in Septemb~r Ormond having first use of the wind and the dry ball, led North Old Boys by 21 points at quarter time . Ormond gained their advantage by being first to the ball . After the quarter time break both sides had a titantic battle for supremacy with no side gaining the upperhand . Both sides had strung 3 victories in a row before this match and victory was paramount . The Monds proved to be the stronger side, and dented the confidence of ten boys from Bren Oval . Ormond rover, Nick Cox had his best game for the season . David McDonald dominated the back line with his agressive attitude at the ball . District cricketer, Steve McCooke, is now showing his best form. Andrew 'Jobbers' Jobling showed the opposition he had recovered from the Tasmania Carnival . North Old Boys Coach, Mark Hanneberry, was clearly their best player. Paul Considine once again was a thorn in the side to the opposition . Young State U19 representative, Anthony Dwyer, showed his opponent a clean pair of heels. Defender, Michael Hedley, continued his good form, but the final result was very disappointing for No rt h Old Boys . In the shock result of the round Parkside beating Old Scotch proved to all their critics that they will be very competitive for the remainder of the season . Parkside opened with the strong breeze, but managed only 2-7 to the Cardinals 2 goals. In the second quarter the Red Devils limited Old Scotch to 6 points giving Parkside a 2 point advantage at half time . In a tough physical third quarter Parkside, sensing victory, added 2-6 to the Cardinals 1-2 . Parkside leading by 12 points at the three quarter time started the final quarter in great style, kicking 2-1 and keeping Old Scotch, kicking with the breeze, to 4 points for the quarter . In fact the Cardinals did not score a goal in both quarters, when they had advantage of the strong wind . Parkside defenders who have come in for plenty of criticism (due to lack of pace) really made life difficult for the Old Scotch forwards, and the result really had the supporters singing the praises of the Parkside defenders. Parkside centre half back, Frank 'The Tank' Sansonetti, showed by his efforts in heavy conditions why he is highly regarded at Parkside. Winger, John Pappas, was also very impressive with a never give in attitude . Ruck rover, Mick Cotter, continues to improve with each game . Toughman, Brian Glasgow, back from injury, had a ripper game in the centre. Goran 'Gozzie' Yorsich, back from suspension, played a good first up game . Old Scotch ruckman, John Moir still carrying a couple of niggling injuries from the Tasmania Carnival rucked very well against good opposition . Defender Rod Austin playng his 3rd Senior game was a good performance, Captain Robbie Fu6h r playing at centre half back giving inches to his opponents led by example, and played with great courage and desperation . The win was a vital tonic for the Red Devils and I expect them to keep on improving . University Blues recorded a hard slogging win against Old Paradians at Elsternwick Park . In a very low scoring game due to the state of the ground both sides could only manage 4 goals a piece, which was very disappointing for the good crowd at the park . (The State U 19s playng the next day in heavier conditions kicked 9 goals in a quarter less) . Parade kicking with the first use of the breeze only managed 1-1 to lead by 1 point at quarter time. Then in the second quarter Uni Blues only kicked 1-4 to Parades soliary 1 point. Uni Blues at half time had doubled Parade's score 2-4 to 1-2 (really) . The third quarter both sides fought for the winning break, which did not eventuate. Uni Blues led by 9 points at three quarter time, and teh stage was set for a good finish . Uni Blues using the wide spaces of Elsternwick Park kept the boys from Old Parade out to record a narrow 6 point win . Ex Caulfield Grammar Sam Stevenson had his best game for the season for Uni Blues. The consistent Geoff Allan continues to dominate. John 'Mr. Recruiter' Kanis had a welcome return to form . Dar rel Gust once again was in the thick of the action . Old Paradians defender Dominic Spillane has had an outstanding season, continues to show out with his courage and ball winning ability. Matt Considine showing his old dash had a good match . Paul Zappa continues to improve, and has become on of Parade's gun players. Rover and Captain Frank Gleeson was dangerous all day, but Parade were found wanting at the critical moment. Collegians produced an excellent team effort to beat Marcellin at home by 14 points. Both sides had excellent first quarters . The Lions kicked 4 straight to lead the Eagles by 1 point at quarter time. Most supporters agreed the Lions won the match in the second quarter kicking 1-6 to the Eagles nil, opening up a handy 13 point break at half time. Marcelln attacked relentlessly in the 3rd quarter, but inaccurate kicking for goal proved costly when they managed only 1-4 to the Lions 1-1, Collegians started the last quarter with a 10 point advantage, and did enough to record a solid 14 point victory. Collegians half back Matt Gailbraith continues his outstanding form, and was judged best on ground . Wingman Ian Robe rts produced his best game for the season . Ruck rover David Hoyle was the main instigator for the Lions in driving the ball forward, where U19 State representatives S.O .D. Parkin (3 goals), and Wayne Daly (2 goa ;s) made the most of their opportunities. Marcellin's ever reliable centreman, Joe Amad (2 goals), produced a lion hearted effort in lifting his side . Defender David Howe returning 2

THE

AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

„~ ,n}ury, ran straight and hard at the ball all day . Ruck rover Mark Delahunt back from suspension was back ~„s aest form . Rover Freddie Battistella was at the bottom of the packs, impressive with skilful disposal . n tf,e battle for relegation Old Xaverians had a convincing win against the boys from Kew. Due to unplayabl e -aa,tions at Xavier College the match was switched back to Yarra Park where the ground was heavy but on singly good . Old Xavier jumped Kew to lead by 21 points at quarter time. Kew had a good 2nd quarter ng 2-4 to 1-3 to trail Xavs by 14 points at the long break . Kew fought back strongly in the 3rd quarter, an d -,,c red Xavs by 4 points . Both sides were expecting big last quarterse, but it was Old Xaverians who provided of the goals, kicking 3-3 to Kew solitary 1 point to run out easy winners by 30 points . Old Xaverians big D,v centre half back Mark McClelland (ex Caulfield Grammer) has proved to be a great acquisition . Hal f =::ard Anthony Callan (3 goals) was strong and reliable all day. Bill Denton playig his first senior game this : aon was great. Kew beste player was Peter Thornely who showed great skills in the heavy conditions . Brett qBomber' Burden back from injury led by example, as did full back Sam Bruno once again was a tower of -, ~n rjth . Robe rt Schober back from injury had a welcome return of form . Xavs made 8 team changes for s match . Coach Danny Corocan was more than pleased with the result . NOW TO TODAY'S GAMES A. Section provides a great round of football with some exciting matches . Most matches will be played on zavy ground, which might put some tipsters off, but not the'Villain' . P;latch of the day will be a ripper . Can the Monds reverse the first round result? Will Uni Blues win their 8th :rrie in succession? They say winning form is good form . Uni Blues ruckman Mike Yandell to exploit Ormond's ; ; R of big men, and help his side to victory. Uni Blues by 11 points. Old rivals Marcellin at home to the improving Parkside boys should provide a tough physical game. Marcellin Joe Amad and Parkside Brian Glasgow duel in he centre will be a ripper (both are tough, vigorous players) . Marcellin have lost 2 in a row, and unless their mental approach is right (the melee specialists) will find Parkside :rder to beat than the first round . Parkside record against Marcellin is not good, and I lean to Marcellin by ooints . North Old Boys at home to Collegians will be a beauty. Collegians have been most consistent this season, ,nd will need to be at their peak to ensure victory against their opponents . Collegians with pace to burn should ave first use of the ball, to give them victory against their talented opposition . The Lions by 11 points . Old Xavs at home to Old Paradians also will be a good match . Xavs strengthened by the inclusion of Ti m stoney (ex Melbourne) will provide plenty of headaches for Old Parade . Rover Frank Gleeson duel with Dan Meagher could decide the winner of this game . Parade are in a slump losing 3 in succession, must win or -neir season will be over . This should drive them to victory. Parade by 15 points . Kew at home play host to Old Scotch . This should be another terrific game . The conditions should favour Kew's direct approach to the ball . Old Scotch will be relying on class . Ruck man John Moir and Rohan Aujard :uel with Tony Peric will be vital . Old Scotch led by Robbie Fuller need to win this match to avoid the relegation one. Kew's captain B re tt Burden must inspire his boys . Old Scotch are yet to win an away game this season, ~,iist concentrate for the full match . Scotch by 17 points. The home team have recorded 25 wins to the away team 20 wins . After 8 consecutive dry Saturdays, last week's sludge was sure to test the basic skills of all foothalle behind the ball and stay in front . Such muddy conditions can only bring all sides closer together . In a game which we thought would pave the way for the "Fawks" come back, OM's proved th a

determined to stay in the four . The "boys out west" jumped the Navy Blues by snagging the first thre e in the opening fifteen minutes . Ruckman Harry Busst and rover Lester were on fire and FavetCn- 'c to cause an upset . Unfortunately, the flames were soon extinguished as the Navy Blues slammed or _< in the second term . Young star N ic k Boyden has been a great acquisition as has the emergence of C- iiith". The highlight of the game was the after match hospitality . Hot food was served fo r

an hour after the final siren and understand this is typical of Fawkner's home ground welcome. The Boys can't wait! r bound straight back onto the winner's list with a sound win over Blacks . The conditions d P from bagging five while Ando and ~ Flash proved a handful for the Black .- . hard for the Uni Students, who despite looking good on paper, are languishing perilously close to th of the ladder. Now's the time to make a charge if you want to be part of the action in late August ! Brighton played a very determined , in very heavy conditions . : rrepressable despite the ankle deep mud . ^^ p 1 L1nrkh also shows sure to win their fair share in the second round . The dasl • ana steady hand s and , 1,11-r Lade was enough to secure the points fot it i t . rd's continued their string of wins over the inaccu ` ' and ucky" Purcell, won all day while "Old M an" h i ° continued to show his young tee ; that "you can't put an old head on young shoulders". Monash aren't too far off the pace yet, like thei students the Blacks . need a couple of wins to distance themselves from the bottom of the ladder . Therry, like their opponents Trinity, are capable of anything on their day . Picking thir day is the diffic t Both teams now turn with four wins and five iosses and must become more consistent to be true co r for a berth in the finals. Last Saturday, ` won the battle of the coaches and had good suppc "E' ;" and "Wriggles ." Once again ` and mes" Taylor were wir for Trinity.

This week's games see Brighton travelling to Fawkner for the 3 course aftermatch hospitality . Althou Tonners will no doubt appreciate the gesture, we can't see the Fawks reversing their first round loss . At iR and in the wet, it won't be easy but Brighton should continue on their winning way ! C3M's are set to avenge their drubbing by Therry in the first game . The Navy Blues are always hard 'to at Fawkner Park and although Therry has everything to play for the "Witt Bros" t" won't t easy. "Pole's" confident so its OM's for us. Trinity will have to wait another week to start their charge . De La have awoke from their "malaise" ar show no mercy despite the heavy conditions . The rematch of the "Book Worms" is anyone's guess? Both teams have 3 wins and although spasmodi c they team well, neither team can string match winning form together . The fact that the game is at MOnash their pre-match warm up will be held in the " le", we'll No the Blues . SuS4een must win this week to keep in touch . If they show the same determination as last week, they 1 be a chance. Unfortunately, their inconsistent form makes it impossible to go against St . B ernards. Prediction s Old Brighton to "eat" Fawkner RA, h to defeat Blacks OM's to defeat Therry I's to defeat Bulleen . Be La to defeat Trinity

; played good strong football to turn a half time deficit of 35 points into a 6 point advantage at 3/a time . La Trobe even with the aid of the breeze in the final term could not shake off the determined Doveton side who - 3n out winners by one point . Scores from last week were Wests 12 .15 defeated Brunswick 9 .4. St . Bedes 15 defeated UHSOB 2 .4 . Old Essendon 7.12 defeated Old Geelong 6.5 . Aquinas 9.9 defeated Heatherton l 0. North Brunswick 27 .19 defeated Peninsula 6 .6. and Doveton 11 .7 defeated La Trobe 10 .12 . This week e see some very important games for several sides and only Aquinas and La Trobe appear to have an easy me of it. St . Bedes face Doveton who will be full of confidence after recent good wins and the home sid e be desperate to beat the Doves and maintain the 4 point gap. Old Essendon are at home to West and ~,js could be make or break for them as they must win to keep their finals chances alive. Heathe rton meet 3runswick and while Heatherton will be keen to win a loss for Brunswick will make their slim chance even more ,move . No rth Brunswick play Old Geelong with neither side in a position to lose . Aquinas at home to Peninsula ~ould be untroubled as should La Trobe who are hosts to UHSOB . My selections this week are - Doveton ,, er St. Bedes, West Brunswick to beat Old Essendon, Heathe rt on over Brunswick . North to defeat Old Geelong. Aquinas to account for Peninsula and La Trobe to beat UHSOB.

Last weeks round produced only ONE solitary winner . And everyone else would have picked it as well Thomastown over AJAX . The other results caused a few changes to the ladder which now means that 7 tearr, are fighting for 2nd, 3rd & 4th spots . Furthermore, Bulleen United & MHSOB are in the strange predicament of being one game out of the four, but also only one game away from RELEGATION . Thomastown consolidated its deserved position at the top with a huge 182 point win over AJAX. State Bank probably recorded the most significant win of the round via a 1 point win over Whitefriars. The win perhaps showed that the Bankers are starting to get some consistency into their game and it may have also vindicated my comment last week that Whitefriars are not as good as their early form suggested . In fact, a few people are now tipping that the Friartucks won't make the final four ! Powerhouse kept in the finals race with a solid 17 point win over Old Mentonians and the same could be said about MHSOB with their comfortable 33 point victory against Elsternwick. Old Camberwell also kept its finals chances alive with a 33 point win over Bulleen United . It was a low scoring game but 5 goals in the first quarter in the heavy conditions gave the OC's a match winning break . The loss puts the Baby Bulls in the hot seat with 4 very tough games in the next four weeks . The match of the round today is probably at Albert Park where the Bankers play host to the Panthers . State Bank are starting to look good, with key forwards Purcell & Jenkins really firing . Mentone however seem to be relying too much on their experienced stars like the Sciacca Bros., Norton, Newman & Bournon . If they don't perform, neither do Mentone. It should be close, but State Bank should win . Bulleen United travel to Thomastown for a crucial game with the leaders . The Bulls looked ordinary last week, whilst the Bears aren't doing much wrong . Key forward Karambelas & Smith are looking good whilst the Fellow Bros. are giving great drive. Morley & Empey are naturally playing well, but they need more help from their team-mates. It's a critical game for the Bulls, but I can't see them beating the in-form Bears. • AJAX make the short trip to Power House, where Evans and his charges will be looking forward to a good win to keep their finals hope very much alive . AJAX were very disappointing last week and I can't see them reversing that sort of form in a hurry. Whitefriars travel to Elsternwick in what should be a much closer encounter than most people think. The Friartucks are not playing well whilst the old boys at the Wickers have found a new lease of life. Whitefriars will need to play well to make sure they get the points . The last game is also an important one, particularly for MHSOB - a loss for them could see them slip to two games out of the four. Old Camberwell are starting to get some sort of form together but players like Comer, Wix, Drummond & Tyrell should give the home side enough for a win . So, selections are: Elsternwick v Whitefriars State Bank v Old Mentonians MHSOB v Old Camberwel l Thomastown v Bulleen United Power House v AJAX

We have now reached the halfway mark and the last few weeks have altered the situation for many of the teams as we enter the second round . Doveton after a shakey start have put together a string of good wins to establish themselves as definite contenders for a finals berth . Old Geelong & Brunswick have both lost form and will now have the job ahead of them to get back into contention. Old Essendon, Aquinas & Nort h Brunswick are all only one game out of the four and will be sure to make things difficult for those sides vehind them and for that matter the sides ahead of them will need to take a closer look at them . St . Bedes & West Brunswick look set as do La Trobe who suffered their first loss for the season at the hands of a very determined Doveto n 6

150 GAMES AT OLD MENTONIAN S

A Golden Day for Rohan Brown who plays his 200th game today ! There is no doubt, looking back through the annals of the Old Melburnians Football Club, that only a very few players in the last ten years, have re presented the Club with as much esteem (on and off the ground) as Rohan Brown .

Starting his illustrious career in 1976, he was vicecaptain in 79'80 an captained the club in '81, '82,'85 . He has won four Clubs B & F. These were in '77 , '80,'82 and last year. He has played 18 State games (V.C .'85), All Australian '82 & '85, and was winner of the Carnival Medal in 1982 .

He has played in 4 Premierships 76(C), '78(B), '82(B) and '88(C), and has played for Carlton in '86 . With such great statistics, it is understandable why he has had offers to Captain-Coach other clubs, but due to his loyalty and love for the OM's has always refused . Rohan believes he has been very fortunate, being able to play powerful football with such good OM friends and players around him (like Pole, Ed Crodner & John Mitchell retired etc .) which keeps him interested, and makes him enjoy the game even more . He has also been very lucky over the years, in avoiding major injuries . With so many great players playing around him, he says he is fortunate to be with such a great club, and looks forward to being in A Grade, and hopefully an A Grade Premiership. Surely he deserves this after such an illustrious career. Then again, the Club has been particularly fortunate in having Rohan playing 200 games. Well done Rohan, in reaching this milestone fro m all players, and your very many supporters . ,THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

The Committee, Supporters and all players extend their sincere congratulations to Ross Newman on playing his 150th game for Old Mentonians against Powerhouse (Round 9) . Rosscoe joined the Panthers in 1980 and has been a fine example to all, both on and off the field . This milestone is even more significant . given that Ross has had to battle many injuries - being the direct result of his tenacious and desperate style of play. Ross is still playing great football, and has made a name for himself in the difficult position of half back flank . His tagging and harassing of opposition forwards, together with his fierce tackels, smothering and desire to get the hard ball has earnt him the respect of all associated with the Old Mentonians Football Club. A current committeeman and selector, Ross has always given 100% on and off the field . being rewarded with the VC and DVC of the Club at various stages of his career. Recently married to Karen, all at the Club wish him well for the future and look forward to him reaching the elite 200 game Club . 50 GAMES TO ZEDDERS V.C .

All at ANZ copngratulate Peter "The Moth" Marshall who last week played his 50th game for the club in our great victory over Commonwealth Bank . Peter who was captain for the day again performed very solidly in what was an excellent day for the club. Moth, who has been around for a while now woul d have achieved this milestone earlier but for his 6 month sojourn through Europe & the UK last season . Always vocal both on and off the field . Peter i s settled in very well this year in his position of responsibility within the side and is leading from the front . Well done 'Moth' from all at ANZ Bank, we loo k forward to many more fine games from you as you march towards your century and the Zeds hopefully march towards 'E' Grade . OBITUARY Members and supporters of the State Bank Football Club deeply regret the passing of Joe Smit h Joe held many position in the Club including Secretary, Delegate and Vice President during his 40 year involvement . Recent years saw Joe capably fulfill the role of an elder Statesman . Committee and Members wish to convey their deepest sympathy to Joe's family. 7

I'm a happy man and life could not be sweeter!

An old sixty niner for the Noddies a minor Result when compared to their recen t Set of avalanche scores - Willy stuck to their chore s And went down - but they kept it quite decent

It's been two weeks or more since a footy match I saw Whilst the Oz Amateurs failed Cleary's measure Then the Bears beat the Blues and to a chorus of booze They feel off the walls into Jezz a

Now up at Falls Creek at the start of last weet, The ski groupies got really plastere d Round the bars they did swarm they were in brilliant for m For ecstasy's one thing they've mastered .

Oh where have you been, Peter boy, Peter boy? Oh where have you been with F-Troop, Peter ?

I have been to seek a wif e Just to quash those rumours rif e

Whilst Jeffrey Cannot avoid foot and mouth rot Our Fletcher Jones Brown suits the momen t Law and order's the fare, Browny's hanging in there A fluid suspension to foment . While the Waves waved good bye, Tommy's Tellers scored a triUmphant win over Harrys down Trotter n While the Banjos with pluck caused the Redders to muc k Up a chance for the four which is rotten . With the Brownlow as low as a ram's to and fro Through the power of Diesel and Plugger Here's hoping the pattern of Healy and Platten Can keep the award from a slugger . The Eagles were stranded as Maggie demanded A coffin to FIT and they di d Now they're chasing the Noddies and looking for bodies Of challenging sides to be rid . Well you need to beware in Tiananmen Square Old China's not easy to brea k

But the Tea-Towel is flapping and there may be re-mappin g In the world of the occupied wake The Brewers delighted and the Artists were smited And the score card it read like Geelon g Keeping Kelvin ambitious while the Artists' best wishes Are for the season to not very be lon g With a field full of greens Tassie's now full of beans With a gray robin beating his breas t While Bob's erring and umming on his maybe fourth comin g The peacock is guarding his nest .

Well I just took a peek at the draw for this week Now readers the fixtures excitin g For it's just caught my eye that the Nods have a bye Which means that no one cops a hiding . Now out at Boot Hill where the Lep keeps a still And Steve Andres a Baskerville houn d The Artists they're playing, for blood they'll be bayin g They'll be buried on top of the ground . The Brewers at home to the Banjos should hc All the skills that they'll need in the finals While the Trotters and Reds, both still shaking their head s Will be asked for temporary revival . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

At the half way mark of the season the battle for a final's berth is still intense in each of my five sectors of ,~arest . Conversely the battle to avoid relegation is just as intense even if not so many teams are battling to : . id the dreaded drop . My new image has been provided for my readers courtesy of my sponsor Kodak and re r National Accounts Manager, John Kerr. Review of Matches played June 17 - Round 9 G SECTION An eighty three per cent success rate was my Round 9 lot . My mistake was to select De La Salle to defeat Monash Whites. They failed by forty five points! My correct forecasts saw Kew demolish Old Scotch by one ,,ndred and three points . St . Bernard's thrash Marcellin by fifty five points, Old Melburnians scrape home , two points at Bulleen-Templestowe . Bloods overwhelm Old Xaverians by fifty eight points and Po rt Colts ,efeat Collegians by thirty three points . H SECTION Including the Therry win by forfeit I tipped the Round 9 card although the variations in scoring were not ie to my predictions. St . Kevins maintained section leadership and pushed Kontias to fifth as a result of their nirty two point victory. Power House did not let me down as they defeated Old Geelong by sixteen points. St. Kilda moved to third as a consequence of another huge victory - they defeated Balaclava by eighty three oints, State Bank finished with a deficit of twenty three points against Salesian College . GTV9 forfeited to Therry & Richmond Central had the bye. UNDER 19 SECTION 1 The jockeying for top positions intensified as a consequence of Round 9 results . Old Paradians Green defeated Banyule by the extraordinary margin of one hundred and fifty five point . The Paradians now lead the section . Whitefriars rebuilt its percentage when it defeated Collegians by ninety five points . Ormond defeated Marcellins by thirty one points after a low scoring game while De La Salle Blue had a ninety two point victory over the oottom side, University Blues. Old Xaverians moved to fifth position as a result of their twenty point victory over Old Haileybu ry. The first loss by Old Haileybu ry saw them fall to third place in the ferocity of this competition . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Another perfect score by your favourite tipster . Old Scotch did prove too strong for Melbourne High School Old Boys as the Cardinals won by seventy one points points . Old Brighton were too strong for St . Bernards and won by twenty six points. Old Melburnians were able to defeat Bulleen Templestowe by thirteen points - Had Bulleen Templestowe kicked more accurately the result could have been different . Therry were far too trong for Old Paradians Purple and won the game by seventy one points whereas in the intervarsity clash University Blacks had a tense struggle with Monash Blues before the Blacks won by twelve points . North Old Boys received a forfeit from Caulfield Grammarians . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Only a fifty percent success rate was not a good result for your scribe who correctly predicted Aquinas would defeat St . Kevins - they did by seventy five points . Thomastown & Albanvale did indeed play a thriller. I was mong in predicting the outcome as Albanvale won by sixteen points . Fawkner proved me wrong when they defeated Parkside by ten points whereas Mazenod did defeat Old Trinity by sixty points. My reasoning that Mazenod would win was vindicated by fact . Ivanhoe made a mockery of my judgement that they would lose because they defeated De La Salle Gold by forty points. Hampton Rovers won on a forfeit from Bulleen United . Preview of Games to be played June 24 - Round 1 0 G SECTIO N De La Salle should redeem themselves by defeating Collegians who have notched only two wins this season . Leaders Kew journey to St . Bernards for what could be a tough encounter for the undefeated leaders . While expecting a close game I am confident Kew will emerge victorious . Old Scotch will need to pick up form quickly or they will lose to Bulleen-Templestowe today . When viewed objectively I must select Old Scotch who have the more impressive record this season . Marcellih journey to Old Xaverians for a game which either side could ,and can win . Marcellin have no form to recommend them while the Cro codile's form is more in and out than any kitchen drawer. Old Xaverians I suspect are slightly less likely to lose! Bloods should be able to defeat Old Melburnians comfortably as I believe Port Colts will be able to do against Monash Whites. H SECTIO N Who to select between Old Geelong & State Bank is a dilemma. Both have two wins this season and as the State Bankers have the more assets on the board I go for them without any confidence . Kontias should THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989 9

return to the winning list with a big win over Balaclava while the Richmond Central versus St . Kevins d,,,,, could be a preview of the section Grand Final . St . Kevins has the more impressive record and as Richmond Central have not played for four weeks, I select St . Kevins . Therry who have not had a run for three week ; could be short of match practice against CBC St . Kilda who have carried all before them of late. Even at TfIerry I select St . Kilda . Salesians at home should prove too strong for Powerhouse and thus keep in touch will the top four sides . GTV9 with the bye will have their fourth successive week without a game. UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Whitefriars at home to Banyule should have another percentage boosting victory while Ormond shoul, be able to do likewise at home against Collegians . Marcellin should return to the winning list at the expens, of University Blues but the results of the remaining two games could remain in doubt until the final siren, Old Xaverians will be at home to De La Salle Blue and despite their great victory last week I do not believe the Old Xaverians will be able to defeat De La Salle Blues whose 1989 form has been the superior. The Old Haileybu ry versus Old Paradians Greengame could be a Grand Final rehearsal . Haileybury suffered the,r first defeat last Saturday while David McCormack has his charges mowing down opposing sides like a juggernaut The Paradians believe they can avenge their opening round eight point loss and when judged on recent form I must select Old Paradians Green . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 University Blacks, probably rent by the vacation travel to Old Brighton Grammarians . I tip the locals who play the Brighton Beach Oval so well . North Old Boys should notch another victory at the expense of Melb -) urne High School Old Boys who are not having a successful season . Old Scotch journey to Bulleen Temple : l ovye where the locals will be competitive . However in the final analysis I believe Old Scotch possesses the taler ; to win . Old Paradians Purple should record their first victory since May 6 by defeating Caulfield Gramm .~ rians at Bundoora today. Therry travel to Old M elburnians where they should win again and maybe move into the top four as a result . St . Bernards make the long journey to Clayton to play Monash Blues . Vacation time could weaken M Onash so I will select St . Bernards. . UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Thomastown play Ivanhoe for the second time in three weeks . On June 3 Thomastown came from behind to win by twenty nine points . At Thomastown I have no reason to think Ivanhoe can reverse the result today. Mazenod should record another big victory at the expense of St. Kevins while at home I expect Hampton Rovers to tighten their grip on fourth place by defeating De La Salle Gold . Albanvale & Fawkner should play an interesting game on the Mutton Reserve . Albanvale have the players capable of guiding them to the victory I believe they will attain . Parkside at home to Bulleen United should have only minimal difficulty in winning the four premiership points. Old Trinity, anxious to atone for last week's loss by accounting for Aquinas today should do so .

,-eresting to observe the Uni Blues v Old Paradians reserves game at Elsternwick Park last Saturday . . Central e, Norm Nugent, had son Alan playing on the wing for the Blues and boundary umpire Brian O'Donnel l i son Glenn playing for Paradians. Probably lucky the mud made most players unrecognizable as I'm sure r treatment would certainly have been levelled .

I think it's about time I got back to mentioning our very important sponsor group and this week I woulci to focus attention on the Australian Wool Corporation . The Australian Wool Corporation (AWC) has been involved in major sport for quite a number of years, particulai working with leading apparel manufacturers supplying wool based 'walk out' uniforms for our Autralian Olym c and Commonwealth Games Teams, Davis Cup and Federation Cup tennis teams and our successful men's awomen's Australian Cricket teams, plus many other Australian sporting teams . The AWC has also been busy with 'on field' apparel, particularly keeping our 'successful' Australian Test cricketer warm (or is it cool now that England has experienced a warm summer?) - at least they're comfortable in thEi famous 'Green and Gold' banded pure new wool cable knit humpers . In fact, talking of success, the Australian Women's Cricket Team which last December won the World Cufor the third time in succession, were resplendent in their pure well cable knit jumpers . Well, this time of the year the AWC is more involved in keeping our Australian Football players comfortable in quality 'Woolblendmark' football jumpers . These 'Woolblendmark' jumpers have, over many years, been well and truly tried and tested by the Carlton Football Club . Over the years other VFL clubs, such as Fitzroy, Geelong, Footscray and Melbourne have also worn the jumpers . In fact, Carlton players have commented publicly that they would prefer 'Wool blend' jumpers to anything elso that may be available . VFA, VCFL and of course, the VAFA, have endorsed the 'Woolblendmark' jumper . The VAFA is most grateful to the AWC and its approved manufacturer, Hugh Lyon Knitwear, for supplying all VAFA Representative Teams with the big W'' Wool blendm ark'jumpers and an eye-catching casual team jumper . I'm sure the AWC and Hugh Lyon Knitweat could provide your Club with a fasion 'off the field' Club supporter jumper - the Rugby tops have been a great hit with many Clubs. Well, a great deal of credit for the development and marketing of the 'Woolblendmark' football and casual rugby top jumpers must go to Dougal Pleasance, the AWC's Controller, Technical Marketing - and yes, we have another ex-amateur footballer in our midst, for Dougal played with Geelong Amateurs in the 1950s , The VAFA acknowledges the tremendous support it has received from the AWC and its approved manufacturers Hugh Lyon Knitwear over the many years the sponsorship arrangement has spanned . THE VAFA WEARS WOOL . . . . and we hope to for many, many years to come. So pull on your .Woolblendmark' jumpers boys and go for it . . . . good luck for Round 10 .

Could regular readers of this column please refer to the promotional page elsewhere concerning the U19 Championships being held at VFL Park next Wednesday . 1988 Victoria Police Award for the Most Disciplined Team was presented f Development Officer) to De La Salle FC U19s last Wednesday night . by Greg Paine (VAFA Promotion s ~ach week, each U19 team is given a rating out of 10 in regards to discipline, self control and genera l ~rtsmanship by the officiating field umpire . Sportsman of the Week - Hampton Rover's Jamie Ross who starred for the VAFA U19s in their final practice =tch against the Victorian Country Teal Cup team at Elsternwick Park last Sunday . All players had hard games on the Saturday before and for Jamie to kick 5 goals in atrocious conditions the Sunday, surely was equivalent to a 10 goal on a normal day performance . Well done Jamie - perhaps a "Denny's" award would be appropriate . Could all readers please see the revised Elsternwick Park program in this "Footballer" - important to note at there are no matches at the Park today or for the next 2 weeks . I'd heard that Ray Jordon had mellowed . Well in the practice match mentioned above, 'Slug' had only 18 syers left late in the game . One lad made 3 errors in a row (probably through sheer tiredness - 2 games/2 }ys) and off he came leaving only 17 . Phil Steven s

LAUGHING FAT BLACK SPIDERS 5 0 One of the Bedas Foreign Legion in Roger `D' Gre ch recently played his 50th game for the club _ nce joining St . Bedes . Roger has proved to be a :ary valuable and entertaining player. Roger's brief career to date has been decorated with many highl ghts and perhaps the most notable of those occurred only a few weeks ago at the SBG with ball under arm aodge broke clear of a pack of players and delivere d 60 metre "thumper" right into the goal square . Rodge thought this was pretty terrific, particularly as he had never before kicked a football more than 20 nietres . Well Roger's self proclaimed glory was short iived when his team-mated "very politely" informed him that he was playing for St . Bedes and not the opposition! . No extra servings of Meaty Bites for that effort Rodge. A keen Blues player Roger openly admits that they won't be around in the 1990's, but ,ie certainly will be . All of us at St . Bedes and obviously our opposition hope so .

this has never stopped him from giving his best at all times, many of these times in the face of severe adversity it is a tribute to his determination that not once has he faded under that adversity . As a winner of our Most Consistent and Most Determined Player in the past two seasons it is a true picture of the effort he has put into our club, one that we hope will continue for many years to come . Congratulations today Paul from all associated with the Zedders, let's all hope that you see more of the game this time, than when we last played Williamstown .

Well done ' Disco ; and we look forward to many more games and perhaps a B & F in '89? 100 UP AT NORTH BRUNSWIC K Harry Tsialtas plays his 100th game for North Brunswick today against Old Geelong . He has risen through the junior ranks at the club and has now matured into a player who holds down the key centre-half forward position with good authority. Harry is an exciting mark and straight kick, just ask him! One of the original "greek tragedies", Harry can be found at any function North Brunswick holds, although he can at times look decidedly, the worse for wear as the night progresses . Up there, Harry ! Congratulations from all at North Brunswick! 50 GAMES UP TO NELLY MELBEAR With more come backs than Nelly Melba, Bulleen United's Michael Flanagan has finally played his 50th for the club . DATELINE : 17th game 1985 . "Old Warhorse to Retire on High? " After several dazzling performances in the ruck for the Twos, that ex-temporal hippy, hack of the pack, BEAR is on the road to a grande finale in the Seniors . (Seems the ol' bloke is giving it away at the end of this season due to leg commitments) . . . . Despite being rather ground-bound these days, it's a rarity for the opposing big bloke to get a sniff at the ballups because of Bear's body-work . . . " Well coach Dick Morley had to give him a game and he booted 4 but he's retired three times since! AND HE'S STILL PLAYING ! Though the centre line keeps him to fullforward now . With about 486 games for Thornbury and a ton for Carnegie you have totalled up couple up now, ear! Well done though . It's been great playing with you . THE BATTLER REACHES 5 0 Congratulations from all at St . Bedes to Billy "The Battler" Dunstan on reaching his 50 game milestone. Billy has become a Beda legend after being evicted from that well known Victorian country town of Quambatook . A terrific clubman, "The Battler" has played most of his football with the Dewkickers . In fact the only time you could count on Billy to hit top form was on the end of season trip . However that is all in the past as this year Billy has been in scintillating form . With the help from a free pot or two in Vern's direction Billy has been able to win senior selection in most games . The big question as the moment is - Has "The Battler" peaked too early? Can he sustain his form and produce his usual brilliance on this year's end of season trip? We wait in anticipation Billy, in the meantime, keep on battling on .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Last Saturday against Balaclava Matt hew "Disco" Driscoll played his 100th game for CBC St . Kilda . Recruited from the College via St . Kilda VFL, Matthew joined the club with a significant reputation, having played Teal Cup for Victoria prior to going to VFL Ranks . A fierce competitor, Matthew takes his football very seriously, and particularly, dislikes losing . A very determined backman, but recently has adopted well to the transition to the forward line . A very fast and strong mark, Matthew has certainly been an asset to the club, not only as a player, but as a great clubman . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

50 GAMES TO `PERCYVEAR' OF OLD PARADIANS Michael 'Percy' Vear is extended congratulations from all at Old Paradians on playing his 50th game for the club on June 3rd, 1989, against North Old Boys . Michael is a valuable player and a good clubman . In 1987 he was able to play only the first half of the season, due to serious injury to his hand, and still won the reserves best and fairest award that year. Best of luck to Michael for many more years to come at the club, on and off the field . 47
