Another thrilling round of A Grade football, top three positions filled . Fourth spot up for grabs between Old Paradians and Marcellin, will be a fitting climax to the end of the home and away rounds . The match of the round between Ormond and Marcellin did not let the supporters down (unless you barrackec for Marcellin) . Marcellin were desperate for a win, Ormond just as determined the first quarter had plenty c' action . The ground was in surprisingly good condition, neither side gave ground, the scores were level at qual time 3-3 apiece. Ormond kicking with the wind in the second quarter took the initial advantage to go to a hanci s lead, with only Steve Psa ros holding Marcellin's defence. Just before half time Marcellin fought back to kick 2 goals to trail Ormond 7.5 to 5.3. I was very impressed young Darren Wood making his debut for Ormond in this quarter . The third quarterthe Eagles threwthechalleng, to the Monds . Both sides were playing finals football . The pressure was great, Marcellin added 3.8 (which wUc to prove costly) to Ormond 2 .1 . Ormond had a 1 point lead at three quarter time . Ormond kicking with the wino in the last quarter quickly asserted their authority against a tiring Marcellin side kicking 5.0 to Mareeilin 1 .1, tc run our comfortable winners by 24 points . Ormond's best player was district cricketer Steve McCooke who<e 4 goals was a valuable team contribution . Nick Cox continues to impress alI the M onds supporters . Paul Mc D onald controlled the rucks giving the Monds ball players a picnic . Marcellin's best player was defender Steve -- soras who took many telling marks rn defence. Freddie Batt isteila was very dangerous around the packs . John Orijtasso continues his excellent form for the Eagles . All in all this was a very entertaining match . Another great match was between Old Paradians and North Old Boys, who were kept scoreless in the last quarter hanging on to win athriller by 4 points . No rt h Old Boys started this match bristling with confidence (due to their previous form - why?), and quickly raced to a commanding lead, adding 6.3 to Old Paradians 1 .1 to lead by 32 points at quarter time. Old Parade found goals hard to come by in the second quarter. Parade were struggling they managed only 2 .4 to No rth Old Boys 2 .2 to trail by 30 points at half time . The third quarter was a ripper, both sides were applying pressure that was similar to a finals match . No rt h Old Boys increased their lead at three quarter time adding 4.2 to Parade 3.1 to have a commanding lead of 37 points at the break . Parade started the last quarter with great urgency, the pendulum had swung North Old Boys who had dominated the match for three quarters were clinging desperately to their lead, unfortunately for Parade time ran out the boys from Bundoora had kicked 5.3 to their opponents nil, to lose a thriller by 4 points, in what was a great match . Best on ground for No rth Old Boys was Marcus Boyd (4 goals), who was a reliable avenue of attack for North . Steve `Mr. Skills' Moloney is back to his very best form . Michael Hadley was back to his earlier season form Parade's best player (3 weeks in succession) was the evergreen vice captain, Peter Wood (not bad for an old times) . Michael Skerri tt is back to his brilliant bent . Tim Bea re quiet of late made a welcome return to form . I congratulate No rt h for their fine win, also Parade for their fighting comeback. Collegians travelled to Pitcher Park and handed out a football lesson to the Red Devils, to record an easy 80 point win over Parkside. Collegians kicking with the wind quickly asserted their authority on this match addin 7.4 to Parkside solitary 1 point to lead by 47 points at quarter time. Parksidefull of energy and enthusiasm started to play direct football, but as in recent weeks their kicking for goals left a lot to be desired . Parkside kicked 5.5 to Collegians 22 .1 to trail the Lions by 24 points at the half time interval . Collegians stepped on the gas in the third quarter, Pall who had been beaten by Williams started to run again . Adam Cooper was causing the Parkside backline plenty of headaches. Collegians added 5 .5 to Parkside 1 .1 to have a 52 point lead at three quarter time Collegians coach Bruce Ferguson insisted on the Lions finishing the match in good style in preparation for the finals, and boy did they. Collegians added 7.1 to Parkside 2.3 to run our winners by 80 points . Collegians best on ground was Simon Williams, who payed his best match for the season . James Bennett is capable of anything gave an encouraging display. Adam Cooper eight goals playing his third senior game was excellent value for the Lions . Parkside's best player was defencer Gary Williams who beat three opponents in the course of the match . Lindley Cowell tried all dayto lift his side as did the courageous Nino Vincitorio, Berie Hunt continues his excellent late season form . Uni Blues on the rebound took control after half time, and went on to record a 72 point win against the boys from Kew. Kew once again started the match with plenty of enthusiasm and energy and quickly had the Students on the rebound . Kew added 5 .1 to Unit Blues 3 .5 to have a 9 point lead at quarter time . Uni Blues dominated the second quarter, however their kicking for goal left a lot to be desired . L IN Blues added 4.10 to Kew 1 .0 to have a 20 point lead at the long interval . After half time it was all U ni Blues, goals were coming easy, the Students were running riot, they added 5.4 keeping Kew scoreless to lead by 54 points at three quarter tim e

Nick Wylie'really put in, his determination was a credit to himself . Kew's best player was strong ruckman Tony Peric l~~ providing great value to the Browns . Paul Clayton is in excellent form, maing his club best player - s a row. Neil Duncan never gave in all day displaying great stamina and skills . l;e [ mprowng Old Xaverians kept their winning form going with an excellent 5 point win over arch rivals Scotch :liiain did pick the winner and the winning margin) . Old Xaverians started the match in a very dete,rr :neo o n i ikewise their opponents . Reputations were at stake as both sides fought for supremacy, neither s ice couio e viial break . Old Xaverians outscored Old Scotch 2 .1 to 1 .3 to lead by 4 points at quarter time . Xavs cont riu F a ;racr . In the second quarter but found goals hard to come by. Xavs added 2 .6 to Old Scotch 1 .3 to have u t break at half time. (What did Scotch Captain Robbie Fuller say to Fergus Kiel to get such a response), rd quarter was a ripper, both sides were great, the small crowd of supporters were witnessing a great contest Xavs added 4.3 to Old Scotch 4 .1 to stretch their lead to 15 points at three quarter time . The fourth quarter a repeat of the third, both sides were applying enormous pressure, which side would crack? Xavs k cked 3 otch 4.5 . The siren went leaving Xavs in front by 5 points in what was a terrific contest Old Xavs best c!a-ve ~ = John Tully who has been quiet of late, but lifted for this important match . Mark McCllelland was great anc as a tower of strength for Xavs . Tony Callan again proved what a valuable player he is. Old Scotch best player cecaptain Brian Hodge (where is Brian's right jumper?), player his second good game in succession . Andre w -Andy, Smith, what more can I say about this guy . Ex State player, Peter Drummond was back to his bnlran~ Both sides put on a great contest, it's a pity one had to lose . Now to today's games : .vilata round tofinish the season . The biggest game of the season is at Bundoora, where Parade play Marceilin !ourth spot, and a crack at the premiership flag . Both sides went under last week . Parade suffered a narr to North Old Boys . Marcellin found Ormond too good going down by 29 points . Earlier in the seaso^ orntls tdarcellin had a 21 point win over Parade, however Parade at home are very hard to beat . Parade with great a ;ers in Gleeson, Beers, Wood, Spillane, the Considine boys against Marcellin's Amad, Cooper, Matt & Luke Getson, Psoras what a fantastic match we should have . I watched Marcellin last week and thought the,r c' class forwards would be a problem (it was), and for this reason I lean to Parade capable of anything on the day. A flip of the coin, I go for Parade by 5 points.. Marcellin like their opponents Parkside travel to Gunn Rese rv e to tackle the awesome Ormond machine. Ormond were good last week beating tdarcellin . Parkside were utclassed by Collegians will find Ormond no easier . Let's hope Phil Kingston returns n njury to have a hit out before the finals . Parkside will be strengthed by the return of rover Mark Sedgwick . „ever the Red Devils will fine the awesome Ormond plain awesome . Ormond by 49 points . Kew at home face 5th placed Nort h Old Boys in a game that North have nothing to gain, where Kew or tnc er hand will try and score an upset victory in their last match in a grade this season Kew will be back. af'.-Irouping in B Grade. Kew found Uni Blues too good after half time last week . No rt h .Old Boys had a terr .i c ory against Old Paade, will they have a let down? (seeing they won't make the four, unless Parade and Marceil,r ,I don't think so, I think No rt h will have too much talent for Kew. No rt h Old Boys by 17 points . Oid Xaverians play host to University Blues in a match thai will be very tough to wn . Old Xavs are on a ro-,i ~ir ::rin last week against Old Scotch was full of merit . Urn Blues had a big win over Kew last week . however r: ll find their opponents are more than competitive . I'm selecting Uni Blues (not very confidently) in a close i,e, in what undoubtedly will be a first class game . Uni Bluesby 5 points. Collegians are the home team at Elsternwick Park, in their clash Old Scotch . Collegians had a big 11 ast week over Parkside. Old Scotch went down to Old Xavs in awith thriller. Collegians look the goods . the ns have pace to burn, class players on every line, Old Scotch rely on their name players to provide the push victory. I expect Scotch to trouble the Lions with their desire, however whatever way youlook at ,t Collegians eater skill and consistency will win . Collegians by 23 points . The home team have recorded 461/2 wins to the away team 381/2 wins . Selections : Old Paradians vs Marcellin Old Xaverians vs Uni Blues Ormond vs Parkside Collegians vs Old Scotc h is No rth Old Boys N ow to A Grade Best & Fairest (my tips are), my avourite is Andrew Smith ( Scotch), in any order from latt Galbraith ( Collegians), Dominic Spillane (Parade), Mark McClellandOId ( Old Xavs), Paul McDonald Ormond), Mike Yandell (Uni Blues), Joe Amad (Marcellin) . rrill be overseas for two weeks so Phil `Fabulos' Stevens will ghost my article. s,vers to last weeks question :~ Stevens has nothing in comon with the umpire, but boy did the men in white start thinking for a change "

Coach Alan Salter wanted more, reputations were on the line . Uni Blues went on with thejob in the last quarter they did not relax, adding 6 .3 to Kew 3.3 to run our easy winners by 72 points . Kew outclassed did not throw the towell in fighting this match right outtothe end . Best on grou ad for Uni Blues was defender Chris Holmes playing his 4th senior match this year, and undoubtedly his best game. Geoff Allen quiet of late was back to his best form 2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Last week's "Mini-Final" has resulted in the B .T.'s storming into the four with only one home game remainir Bulleen's consistent second round has allowed them to now be recognised as a Premiership contender, Ai- .' a 17 goal drubbing by O.M's early this year, Allan Paris has turned his young side into giant killers . Last Saturci : . they turned the tables on the Navy Blues, to comfortably win by 4 goals. Meanwhile, Therry, moved into second position after a tough game, against Fawkner. The 'Fawks' took ti game right up to Tony C rotty's boys, who have not looked back since Tony's injury stopped him from playir Phil Ryan revelled in the conditions and isn't scared of getting under the packs . Matty O'Rourke put in anoth :: blinder while ' Old Man' Bye just seems to be getting better. The Fawks meanwhile, are already showing they, ., be hard to beat next year. Stephen Buckley will work them hard over summer and hopefully rebound to "B" Gra Trinity, while disappointed at missing the finals had a good win over Blacks. De La proved too good for St . n exciting finish to the home and away games saw the final four unchanged . Throughout the season Old Naileybu ry are clearly the best performed and must start favourites for the flag . Of course finals are there t on and the top four have equal opportunity to be promoted to B Grade . Down go St . Kevins and Oldo Ivanhoe, with Ivanhoe remaining in this grade by thrashing Old Ivanhoe in a make or break game . Of the other in s, Hampton Rovers missed the finals by percentage, but overall they would be pleased to have performed ,%ell after promotion last year . The most inconsistent side would have to be Caulfield, as I've said before ;d one week, terrible the next . _ast weeks results saw Hampton Rovers inflict defeat on Banyule, team effort by the Rovers . Young Shaun Devereaux, Michael Couts, Matt Salmon, and Matt McKellara great showed incredible maturity with a gca' he siren to take the points . Defeat might be good for Banyule, the pressure asserted by the Rovers w ,i 1 o tiiem in good stead for their big game next week against Old Haileybu ry. Best for the Bears Gray Sutterby, Lusk and Fraumano . Balaclava came away with a strong win against St . Kilda . A third quarter blitz of 6 go : is . . nst the wind sealed the game . On ball players Neil Monaghan, Bernie Raffe rt y and Paul Breslin attack~:'r; all hard, with Kevin Palmer kicking 6 goals . The final term saw St . Kilda game in the dying moments . Best for the Saints Charlie Capi ron yet again, return to form and nearly pinch=- : Clayton Bennett, Liam Buckley Andy McGraw. a revved up St . kevins saw their win go in vain against Pre ston. With a possible reprieve from relegation Kevins were more persistent and wanted the win . Best for Preston Ewing, A . Philp, Milner and Turner . n a much improved displa Caulfield stayed with Old Haileybu ry for three quarters but unfortunately through , of man power the Bloods slammed on 12 goals in the final term to win convincingly . Best for Caulfield . Harris, Lowe and Cooney 5 goals and Old Haileybu ry Tim Snowball, Brett Carty, Wayne Smith and Wes Byrnes. ne relegation game turned into a white wash with Ivanhoe totally outplaying a disappointing Old Ivanhoe . !ow to todays game (current tipping accuracy 74 .4%) ist Semi Final ( at Waverley) This should be a great game, both sides have plenty of talent . . Kilda I believe have the man power and ;rkmg ability while Balaclava attack the ball harder and for themStto win their running players must perform air optimum . Both encounters this year went to Balaclava, therefore St . Kilda have plenty to prove . U p ,:ard St . Kilda has Tony Riddell, a proven goal kicker and now back after injury will balance their forward up together with elusive players Mark Gillan and Charlie 'The Legend' Capiron . Brendan Boyd must -y the rucks for the game giving on ball players Mark Howard, Tony Trabinger and Andy McGrath every :,ortunity. The centre line duels are crucial, Brandwood, Lake and Fiddler will be hard pressed to cove r Balaclava's strength . David Grego ry, Bernie Rafferty and Mark Coutts are a proven centre line. Hayden Dickson will have to play his best game for the year to thwart the Sainst bigger players . Up forward Balaclava rely on Kevin Palmer, Hen ry Smith and Mark Conroy who has excellent marking skills . 4 in all, both sides are evenly matched, Balaclava has the edge in pace and their desire is unquestioned I noticed last week that the final quarter may have been the turning point for the Saints . - St . Kilda to win .. ~ay's selection : 51 . Kilda v Balaclava .

Unfortunately, business took priority last week and, as a result, I could not get an article in on time . Hower_ . . ven the reception by Old Camberwell and Whitefriars over the past few weeks, they certainly wouldn't h,, . . ssed by predictions ! ast weeks results produced no real surprises except perhaps for the winning margin recorded by Thomastown er Old Mentonians . Most would have thought a much closer result than 38 points . In the other games Bulleen United ran away from AJAX in the last half to win by 59 points . Whitefriars continued their recent good form with a comfortable 54 point victory over Power House . State Bank recorc= a good 63 point win over MHSOB and Old Camberwell defeated Elsternwick by an impressive 65 poinzSo the final four sees Thomastown two games clear on top with 60 points, followed byOld Mentonians ( 52) on percentage from Whitefriars (52) with State Bank finishing fourth (48) . Congratulations to all 4 sid•_ .xj no particularly in the second half of the season, have certainly proven to be the better sides of the sectic

"hen follows Old Camberwell, MHSOB, Bulleen United and Power House . The last two positions, wh,c -a^s E' Section nest year, being filled by Elsternwick and AJAX - commiserations to both sides. i• .e rirst of today big games is at Brunswick for the first Semi Final between Whitefriars and State Bank . The two sides met only two weeks ago with the Bankers victorious by only 8 points . The best players that C` r for Whitefriars were unusual, in that, Sutton, Pratt, Tierney, Reidy and Woodman all did NOT feature, Si' a good group of players could not ALL have another off-day and for that reason I expect Whitefriars to cor out or top. The margin won't be much and the game should be of a high standard, but, these players, combiri ; rr :'h the Bankers record of tending to fold in the big ones, should see the Friartucks through to the Preliminary Fir = Across at No rt hcote, Thomastown and Old Mentonians meet in the second Semi Final for the secor : --e,n as many weeks. Last week it was Thomastown victorious, this week it should be Old Mentonians U:i ., through to the Grand Final and promotion to 'C' Section . Two key features sway the balance in favour , rne Panthers - their goal kicking power and the speed at which they move the ball, all over the g round . i_ !o,r,,ard they have many options in Acreman, Bournon and Sciacca in fine form and Solley and Nor-lon ~,rs caoable of scoring whilst resting up forward . Add to this, Newman and "the other" Sciacca around the grour and it looks good for Mentone .

The interesting tussle of the day should be around the centre between Fellows and Newman . Both ha, ad great seasons and should poll well in the Section B & F award . By the time this is ublished the winner ~. . .e known and don't be surprised if "that man" Morley from Bulleen United has won his fou rt h V.A .FA . Awr.r, : Whitefriars v State Ban k So winners should be : Thomastown v Old Mentonians .

Last Saturday saw the season end for eight of the twelve sides in E Section . Congratulations must be extende.' to the sides contesting the finals and commiserations to the also rans . Results for the round were Doveton 12 .1 4 defeated West Brunswick 10 .9 . Old Essendon 19.11 easy winners over UHSOB 3.4. St . Bedes easily account_ for Old Geelong 21 .25 to 6.5 . Aquinas had no trouble with North, final scores being Aquinas 23.24 to North Brunswick 8 .5. Heathe rt on were too strong for Peninsula scoring 22 .15 to 10.7. In the final game La Trote powered to a convincing win kicking 29 .19 while Brunswick could only manage 2 .8 . Highlight of the garr was ten goals from La Trobe Centre half forward Ian Wriggleswo rt h who dominated the game all day . L~ Trobe head the list in both seniors and reserves for the second year running and must obviously be doing ;nethwng right. St. Bedes have held the double chance after a good year and seem to have gained consistency 1? v;as lacking in previous years . Doveton have held third place after good wins in the past few weeks and It ue a dangerous opponent in the finals. Aquinas are up there again and will be determined to progress D Section after the disappointment of last year's finals . The next two weeks will tell the story . Not a lot ca n e said for the others . Old Essendon could have been unlucky for if their draw against La Trobe had been ~ira they would have been finalists again . West Brunswick had their chances but lacked the ability to win games that counted . Brunswick started the season well but slipped back when injuries and continue <,„pensions robbed them of players, No rt h, Old Geelong and Heathe rton have to recruit and work harderd . :ney are to avoid relegation in the coming years . That leaves UHSOB and Peninsula and a season in F may them regroup . Regardless of who progress to D Section, next year promises to be even better than 1989 ny of the top three or four sides in F Section appear capable of being competitive in the next grade . This brings. = to today's games and what promises to be a great day's football . Reserves first - First Semi - Old Geelong eet Aquinas . Second Semi - La Trobe meet Wests . Seniors - First Semi s,?,mi - La Trobe against St . Bedes. My selections - Reserves - Aquinas Doveton against Aquinas . Secon d beat Old Geelong, and La Trobe arrowly over West Brunswick . Seniors - Doveton to account for Aquinastoand La Trobe to progress to "D" ;-ade by beating St . Bedes .

'.Nefl, what a weekend of surprises! Several high-fliers shot down (including the Pilots' Federation which had ings nicely clipped by a passing hawk) amidst charter flights and muddy surfaces . Your corresponden t eored a very embarassing 2 out of 5 to end the season on 71 winners out of 90 matches, a return of 79% -curacy (compared to 70% in 1988) . A terrific win to the Banjos over the Waves who have lost their momentum in recent weeks . The Harry Trotters ad a consolation end of season conquest of the Footrot Flat Boys whilst Willy had a picnic and charged to the Artists' account . But the big surprise was the defeat of the season's top two sides to date . Getta's Tellas pulled off a fantastic .7 point win against the Unde rt akers who, admittedly would have been making sure that they entered the finals 'act . But it was a big effort by the Zedders who have achieved a real competitive edge this season . The B rewers scored a shock win at home against the Noddies by jumping the premiership favourite early :d then outclassing them whilst undermanned in the third term . More than anything else, this win opened up emiership opportunities for each side in the four . SEMI FINALS : 2nd Semi-Final Noddies v Undertakers at Albe rt Park No 4 Oval 1st Semi Final B rewers v Redz at Har ry Trott Ova l Guest Tipsters : i Chris "Def" Leopold : I believe the Unde rtakers fierce desire to gain promotion to E Grade will carry them through in a tight, uncompromising match . In the other match I fancy the B rewers after last week's win to be too big and strong for the Redz . 2 Val "Good" Evans : Thrilled with the Brewers win last week and confident they can go on with it against the Redz - there's a bottle of champagne riding on the result Peter! I also think the Noddies can bounce back agains the Undert akers in a hard fought match , 3 Chris "Ned" Kelly : We were caught napping last week but I'm confident we can again take care of the Unde rtakers . Noddies by five. The Brewers impressed me last week and should have too many big guns for the plucky Redz . John "Al" Grassby : Noddies weren't firing last week but they'll prove worthy of promotion against a determined Undertakers' combination . The Redz waited for a final too long to let this chance slip by and I feel they'll beat the B re wers again - this timehave 5. Phil Stevens and Sue Anderson (VAFA Supremos)officially ! : We fancy the Noddies because of their consistency over the year and the B re wers because Redz will probably mess up their team sheet . 6 Jim Bellas (Mine Host, Fenwick Inn Hotel) : Undertakers because they're good drinkers and Redders because l love Charlie Hosking ! Ian McPhee: I've Undertaken a private members bill into the Noddies of hops and wine makers of Redz are responsible for this situation who disgrace the backbench . Brewers . As usual I'm undecided and will await a wind forward prior to pre-selection .

g Sinkers : Having been through some grave family problems, I favour the Unde rtakers. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

9 . Litt le Johnny Howard : The Redz will hopefully embarass the Elders Statesman who could'nt kick over a jam tim (I know, I was hiding behind the tin!) 10. Lech Walesa : The Underdogs in both games and I can accomodate the Redz. 11 . Mark "Big Bird" Cannon (Best & Fairest, F-Troop, 1988) : ! fancy the Redz and the Noddies because don't like the Unde rtakers and the B rewers. And my selections : Redz to prove too slick on the ground for the high-flying Brewers and to win by about 4 goals . Noddies to rebound and take the E-Grade promotion by having too many on-ba!l options for the Undertc' ;ers who will go down with a real struggle.

P review of Games to be played August 26/27 G SECTION Grand Final at Elsternwick Par k The season's top sides Kew and Bloods battle for Premiership honours today In theirSemi two 1989 Kew won each time - by twenty five points in Round 2 and twelve points in the .Second Finalencounters the rest last week while Bloods fought for victory over Port Colts . Kew had and today with fresher legs Kew should be on the road to victory . Again it is difficult to believe Bloods can nullify Dalton, Donald Macisaac and Prowse all day whereas the Kew defence led by Richard Maclsaac should be able to blanket leading goalkeeper Thoma s ho plays a!one hand in the Blood's forward line . Although the big ground could trouble Kew I am confident they can win the pennant . H SECTION Grand Final at Eisternwick Par k Leading side Richmond Central play CBC St. Kilda whom they defeated by sixty two points in Round 2 hich was their only meeting this season . Good players that day for Richmond included many who played rreVl in the Second Semi Final - Best and Fairest winner Bestow and Vice Captain Jiggins to name two . In ne second semi final Richmond's fifteen goals were spread between seven players and it is difficult to envisaqge the St . Kilda defenders holding Phillips (six goals in Round 2), Lang, (four goals in Round 2) and all the game. This task will be made even more daunting if the leading H Section goalkicker Ricketts Tymms kicks more an the one goal he scored in the second semi final . Good players for St . Kilda are likely to include Nardelia and O'Hearn who did well in Round 2 as well as in the Semi Final . Given St . Kilda's run of three hard matches ,,p to today's Grand Final I believe Richmond Central will triumph and thus prove themselves to be the best side in H Section .

Review of Games played August 19, 1989 G SECTION Preliminary Final A big last quarter effort with the aid of a strong wind enabled Bloods to defeat Port Colts by eighteen points at Elsternwick Park. At three quarter time the Colts had built a thirteen point lead but in the final quarter they could manage only one minor score against the wind . This game was a hard fought one in which both sides displayed wide ranging skills . Bloods now play Kew in the G Section Grand Final . H SECTION Pre limina ry Final C.B.C. St . Kilda despite only managing to score one behind in the last quarter had built an early winning lead over St. kevins whose last quarter inaccuracy also contributed to their loss by twelve points . At half time the scores were !evel before aided by the wind in the third St . Kilda built a winning score with five goals while St. Kevins failed to score. C.B.C . St. Kilda now meet Richmond Central on Sunday, August 27 to decide the section premiership .

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 (Round 18 ) Marcellin who are at home to, Banyule should end the season with a victory their own high standard neither club has had a successful season although each will have high hopes of. By 1990 success La Salle Blue should complete the minor round with a comfortable victory over . Leaders De Whitefriars a .~ait University Blues with the expectation of a big victory to build percentage to enable them. Old Xaverians to hold second oiace. No doubt the Xaverians will win but the margin will depend on their degree of concentration and team o ay. Old Paradians G reen who visit Collegians will appreciate the firm Albert Park surface as they hone their ~kif!s for the finals . Collegians will not be talented enough to prevent a comfortable Paradians old Paradians hope will carry them to second place victory which . Like the wine at Cana, I have left the best to the last Ormond visit Old Haileybu ry with the knowledge victory should take them into next week's semi final . Ormond. jislike heavy going as instanced by their nadir of 1989 at Parade on July 22 and although I cannot forecast ne August 26 conditions the McKinnon Oval could sti!l be heavy and this factor coupled with home ground advantage prompts me to select Old Haileybu ry.

UNDER 19 SECTION 1(Round 17) Round 17 results have only served to complicate the race for the final four as four clubs lie equal on points in the contest for three final places. Collegians proved me a poor tipster when they easily accounted for Banyule by fifty two points while Whitefriars had a forty six point victory over Marcellin . The other three games all could have provided vital results in the shaping of the final four . Leaders De La Salle defeated Ormond by fifty three points which meant Ormond dropped to fifth a game off the pace and with the prospect of the hardest game in Round 18 to come. Old Xaverlans proved my judgement poor when they accounted for second placed Old Paradians Green by seventy one points. This victory has lifted the Xaverians to second ahead of the Paradians . David McCormack must be worried by his side's inability to defeat other top sides . Not only have the other three sides beaten the Paradians they have done so convincingly in the second half of the season (Haileybury 48 points, De La 37 points and now Old Xaverians 71 points). As expected Old Haileybu ry accounted for University Blues comfortably. The Blood's margin of eighty five points added five per cent to their percentage UNDER 19 .SECTION 2 (Round 17) University Blacks really tuned themselves for the finals with a commanding one hundred and sixty one point victory over Melbourne High School Old Boys. Old Brighton defeated Caulfield Gramma rians by one hundred and seventy points in another display of footba!l power while St. Bernards built their percentage by eight per cent at the expense of North Old Boys as they seek final four honours . Bulleen Templestowe really extended Therry who thanks to accuracy in front of goal finally triumphed by thirteen points . Leaders Old Scotch had a clear cut victory by seventy two points overMonash Blues who failed to play up to their Round 16 promise . By forfeiting to Old Paradians Purple, Old Melburnians allayed all of Parade Coach Ian Bibby's relegation worries. Well done Ian to hold your young side in the section !

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 Mazenod despite inaccurate kicking proved too strong for De La Salle Gold and won by twenty eight points. Thomastorm and Ivanhoe played a competitive game marred by strong winds before Thomastown ran out winners by twenty four points . Aquinas added fourteen per cent to their total as they thrashed Albanvale by one hundred and sixty three points . Leaders Old THnity dominated their game against St . Kevins before the leaders won by seventy eight, points . Fawkner and Hampton Rovers both had byes . 8

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 (Round 18 ) St. Bernards should end the minor round with a convincing victory over Melbourne High School Old E ;oys who must have learned a lot this season under the guidance of Steve Dukatis . St . Bernar`us can only hop, that Therry lose to enable them to grab fourth place . Caulfield Grammarians face Monash Blues with confidcnce at Oval 3 . Bolstered by the inclusion of players from C Section, Caulfield should take the points against the Students who have benefitted from the coaching of Steve Giles who often has been "a one man band" fcr Monash . Old Melburnians should end the season with a victory over the disappointing No rt h Old Boys . North who have not lived up to their promise must have caused coach Terry Mills great heartache during the season Old Melburnians although not being a form side should take the points . Old Paradians Purple have proved a competitive side who with greater attention to training and coach Ian Bibby could have finished higher up the ladder . Today they face Bulleen Templestowe who have been nurtured well by Kevin Tibaldi . After a close contest at Bundoora I feel Old Paradians Purple will finish just in front of Bulleen Templestowe. The remaining games should see finals' previews as Old Scotch visit University Blacks and Therry are at home to Old Brighton . Old Scotch have impressed me this season with their all round talent and skilfil movement of the ball . Although the Crawford Oval may nullify their talent I believe Old Scotch will outplay University Blacks who will lack a ruckman to blanket Gibbs. Old Scoeth should win comfortably. Ther ry are always difficult to defeat at home and Old Brighton will face a severe test today at John Pascoe Fawkner Rese rve. The ruck duels could well decide the outcome as Therry's Smith will face the dynamic Brighton duo Williamson and Joynson . Each side has a key forward who could prove to be the match winner if given latitude. Goodwin (Therry) has a sure line of supply via Fitzpatrick while Knight of Old Brighton relies on his running players sweeping the ball forward from the centre . After a lot of deep thought I select Old Brighton to win narrowly. UNDER 19 SECTION 3 (Round 18) I am quite confident that Section leaders Old Trinity will squash all Aquinas hopes of fourth place by winning their game today. Earlier consistency by Aquinas will be the main factor in them missing the finals . De La Salle Gold who are at home to Thomastown will not possess sufficient talent to hold their visitors to a losing score . Thomastown will be keen to maintain their momentum into next week's First Semi Final . Hampton Rovers in all probability cannot take second place but their final plans could be jolted by Fawkner today. Northern suburban ground are not the Rovers favourite arenas and today on the Mutton Reserve they will have to be at their top to hold our Fawkner. The strong Rover defence should be able to hold Fawkner to a losing score as the Fawkner forwards have often kicked inaccurately when under pressure . Hampton Rovers should take the points. Albanvale should finish their debutant season with a victory over the inconsistent St . Kevins. Both Mazenod and Ivanhoe have byes. As this in my final general report for 1989 I thank my readers whose interest makes my writing worthwhile. From comments made to me I know the Review and Preview pages are read avidly each week . It is my hope that my readers support KODAK who have generously sponsored my pages each week . My thanks go to my typist Joan Ahern and Bill Holland at Vaughan Printing for their tolerance and cooperation . I hope our Editor invites me to write again in 1990 .

Tony probably won't play again, but with his spirit and love for the club he obviously won't be lost to Banyule or amateur footy. *** Maybe a couple of these quotes may be able to be used by coaches to lift players to greater efforts - particu c-,, lubs starting their finals series today . 1's better to remain quiet and let people think you are a fool, than to open your mouth and ieave no dot ;* You will never lose a player by congratulating him, but plenty have been lost by abuse . Safe guard your B usiness with Business Insurance

fttakes years of hard work and dedication to build up a business . But what happens to that business if a partner or shareholder should die or is permanently disabled ? The effect on the business could be dramatic . Creditors, for example, might be concerned about the firm's future :nd demand payments of debts ; the business may not be able to get any finance, clients may go elsewhere because of the uncertainty as to whether the firm can fulfil orders and staff can feel insecure and look for other jobs . So what a re the solutions ? The business could be liquidated and the proceeds distributed amongst the other partners, shareholders and ,amily heirs or an heir could take the deceased's place, the business could be sold to an outsider or the other oartners could buy out the heirs . But the profits . result of any of these activities could cause enormous hassle to the business and see a substantial reduction The best solution, sothatthe business will continue to function profitably, is for the partners to enter into a funded ouy and sell" arrangement funded by life insurance . A "buy and sell" arrangement provides cash, so that on the death or total disablement of one of the partners 3, shareholders, surviving partners can buy the share of the business from the partner, and the business can continue without the upheaval . If there were only two partners, they would take life insurance policies on each other's lives, for three or more, <,rust could be established to administer the policies on their behalf . Each policy can be CPI linked . A surrender value is available after two years with a loan facility, depending on ,e nature of the business, at a competitive rate of 14 per cent . Why let a good business fold because of cash flow problems brought about through the loss of a partner? Business life insurance can prevent this from happening . For further information call your National Mutual agent or ring Sara Maynard on 618 4123 .

It is fitting that Lindsay finish off probably his best season of footba!l in this manner. Lindsay and wife Jenny are one of the "Grammar's" stalwart families, fulfulling countless tasks over the years . On field Lindsay displays those qualities that all footballers would love to have, in particular G and D. Once again Lindsay, congratulations on your reaching this goal, and let's hope there are many more years of your involvement at Old Essendon to come .

100 GAMES AT FAWKNE R Today (19/8)Patty Barrett plays his 100th game for Fawkner. The road to this milestone (11 seasons) hasn't been easy, having had many injuries which threatened to end his career. At the moment he is out of retirement and playing as well as he always did . In his younger days "Patty" was a very gifted player, who had the ability to play in a number of positions. These days he lurks in a forward pocket at Mutton Reserve having returned to "Dad's Army" . Everyone at Fawkner wishes "Patty" all the best today in his 100th game . "WELL DONE PATTY" HOAREY'S 100th GAME FOR FAWKNER Warren "Orme" Hoare today (19/8) celebrates hi s 100th game against old enemies Therry . "Hoarey" joined the club in 1982 from Coburg Under 19's and quickly became a key player at Fawkner with plenty of versatility . He is a great mark and excellent kick and was a member of our 1985 Premiers and Champions side . In 1987 he won our 2nd Best and Fairest Award . He works very hard on his fitness although you wouldn't think so being a!ife member of our medical room . There is no doubt opposition sides know when Hoarey's playing by his catch-cry "Orme" . "GOOD LUCK HOAREY !

1st SEMI - 5 YEARS AGO - 198 4 What a season in 'A' Section! 10 wins meant second position, and 8 wins meant 'B' Section . Marcellin was the unlucky team - a search of th e record books shows that Marcellin's eight wins is the highest number yet recorded by a team relegated from 'A' Section . Congratulations to Bulleen-Templestowe, who in its first 'A' Section season finished in third spot . Old Xaverians farewelled Danny Corcoran, best and fairest, captain, and VAFA player, "his loyalty to his team and friends will never be questioned ." In the first semi the Bullants were equal to it when they came from 13 points behind at the last change to kick 8.2 in the final term to win by 15 points . Best were Delaney, K az u ro, Gilmore, Smythe (B/Temp), and for Collegians, Baum, I rvine, Cook . In 'B' first semi, Uni Blacks could not hold off Old Paradians in the final term and went down by 3 points . Spillane, S .Exton, Gleeson (O .P) and Carmody, Doyle (6 g!s) and N . Clark ( U.Blacks) got the votes. In 'D' MHSOB got up with a goal in the final seconds to beat Old Trinity by 4 points . In the Under-19 Alex Johnson Championship semi finals Marcellin beat MHSOB and Old Scotch beat Bull/Templestowe to go into the Grand Final .

Ormond and Hampton Rovers met in the last round for the season at Ormond and played a 6 .10 draw, and then faced up again in the first semi at Brighton Beach . To quote from Hampton Rovers notes "we take the field without our champion Sam Birtles who suffered two broken fingers last week - we need

players like Sam, thorough gentleman on and off the field ." In the semi Ormond kicked 4 .1 to Rovers 0 .6 in the first quarter and then kept this advantage all day to win by 27 points. In 'B' Section Geelong defeated Commonwealth Bank by 8 goals and Uni Blues had a 4 goal win against Collegians . Shades of different sizes - Rovers and Ormond each had only 3 players over 6 feet and only 2 players each 13 stone and over.

Old Camberwell Grammarians' Cameron Guthrie played his 50th game against State Bank i,"~ugust 5th) . Cam has done a great deal of guard ,vork in the ruck for the Wells . 2 X 50 AT OLD CARE Y Mart in "Stan" Newnham today (12/8) plays his 50th game for Old Carey. Stan joined the club from the school in 1984 and played in our U-19 team then had a short stint with Ivanhoe before returning . Now a key position player in our senior team Marty is destined for many more games at Old Carey. Well done from all at Old Care y Another 50 game player for Old Carey today (12/8) is Stephen B rown . Stephen joined the U-19 team in 1984 from the school and has since showed the qualities that make him a regular in the senior team as full back . All at Old Carey look forward to many more fine game from Stephen . Well done.

BRAT PACK FIFTIES Congratulations go to the first of the Uni Blacks Bra Pack to reach 50 games . Simon B ro mmel and Johnt Chomley both joined the Blacks in 1987, with the Under-19's, and after one season with the Juniors, have established themselves as part of the core of young players in the seniors, Broms being this years D .VC. They are both enthusiastic performers both on and off the field as shown by their many contributions to ballads and revue nights. Both 'Broms' and 'Chommers' were members of the successful Melbourne Uni Team in the recent Intervarsity in Surfers . 'Broms' efforts were disoplayed in field, having been selected in the AllAustralian Universities Side, whereas 'Chommers' showed similar performances on the dancefloor at Melba's . Congratulations to these two young performers and we wish them many more 'Anti-Soft' games wit the Blacks. P ro udly sponso re d by PEAT MARWICK HUNGERFORDS OLD CARE Y Great to see our injured brigade turning up each Saturday to support their mates at Old Carey . The new slim-look Ron 'Fergel' Purcell is giving Kel great support on the sidelines ; Andie McHarg (who has his knee re-construction in the next few days) is on the selection panel and committee ; Danny Pratt (on crutches with his broken leg) is always on deck too, with that 'entertainer extraordinaire' Slim Watts. Thanks fellas - you don't have to be out on the field to be part of the team!! ! From all at OLD CAREY a big thankyou to Tony Fink of the TONY FINK PHARMACY, BUNDOORA . Tony (who played 310 games for Old Carey) keeps our'crocks' on the field by supplying all our medical needs, strapping, sprays, rubs etc . etc. Thanks Tony for your great on-going efforts on behalf of OLD CAREY" You're still a great clubman!! ! Congratulations from all at OLD CAREY Sandra Stone for her'Club Champion' Squash win to . Sandra is our'Stats Keeper' and her work on the social committee, in collecting the Amateur Footballer each week, in purchasing pies & dispensing refreshments and being a pal to all at Old Carey is much appreciated . To a 'Top Bird' - Thank you Sandra. All at Old Ca rey wish to thank our major sponsors 'Fosters' and the Elliott Family, and Tom Gabriel of the 'Elgin Inn' Burwood Road, Hawthorn, for their support again this season . We appreciate the great contribution they make to the Club - Thanks "Fosters" and the "Elgin Inn". All clubs need the wonderful support and back-up given to Old Carey by "Thommo's Terrific Toilers". Tis great band of time-keepers, field and boundary umpires, flag wavers and I'change stewards never let us down and capably perform these necessary, but unglamorous, tasks each week . Thankyou one and all from all at Old Carey. With the rash of knee injuries at Old Ca rey this season, co-president Chris Thomas didn't enjoy the news that we now had another one - his dog!! Seems even a pooch can "do" a cruciate ligament at Old Carey!! " Slim" Watts, Andie McHarg, "Muzza" Hamilton, Des Chan, Murray Hehir and "Ronnie" Purcell didn't "do" theirjumping against the back door though!!

Personality Pars

Personality Par s "APOLOGIES TO MAL " All at Brunswick congratulate Mal Snelson on reaching his 50 game milestone . Mal actually played his 50th in Round 16 but due to communication break downs we failed to make that edition . Mal began his career At Brunswick in 1987 and his quickly notched up 50, only missing a few games . Mal has proven to be a steady and reliable full-back always giving his all for the jumper. A feature of his game are those long bombs he lets go from full-back, often setting up many forward thrusts, he has shown more versatility this year by kicking a few goals up forward . Well done Mal and my apologies for the late recognition . A LARGE 50 AT HEATHERTON Congratulations go to Ralph "King Kong Bundy" Watson on finally playing his 50th game for H .FC. today (19/8) . Ralph started with H .F.C . in 1984 and the reason for him taking so long to reach this milestonc is that his passion for take-away food far outweighs his passion for football . A true casanova with female time-keepers this roly-poly type chap is the only person in VAFA history to eat a pizza while sitting on the interchange bench . A feature of Ralph's play is that he always does a roll n mid air when he takes a mark and he always gets more stats at the canteen than stats on the field . With a name like Ralph one certainly doesn't need a nick name, however H .F.C. will miss Ralph when he goes on his world trip in search of the perfect McDonald's . Well done "Ralph". 50 UP AT BRUNSWICK The committee, players and supporters at Brunswick all put our hands together for Johnny Ralph who plays his 50th game today (19/8) . John first came to Brunswick in '87 and is that time has quickly shown great improvement in his skills . John is a gutsy player who shows no fear always attacking the ball and this year has proven to be a very elusive forward making the most of every opportunity . Congratulations John and keep up the good work . 50 UP AT OLD CAREY Chris "Disco" Hughes this week (19/8) plays his 50th game for Old Carey against Mazenod with the honour of being appointed deputy vice captain . This year Chris is just starting to hit his straps after a hamstring injury has troubled him all year. When fully fit Chris is hard to catch and very dangerous around the goals. All at Old Carey look forward to the next 50. KEW MILESTON E Kew congratulate their HBF Simon Lord on playing his 50th game today (19/8) . Recruited from Carey Grammar in 1987 as a ruck-rover come forward Simon has proven his versatility by often playing a tagging role instead of his usual open style of play. Congratulations and good luck today to Simon from all at Kew. "50 UP FOR DAVE " Everyone at Preston would like to congratulate David Heenan for reaching his 50th game this week (19/8) . Dave joined the club from West Brunswick three years ago and has been a very valuable player . After establishing himself as a senior player, last year Dave played in our Premierships side and came third in our Best & Fairest, he has a great future at

Preston and we all hope to see a lot more of Dave in years to come . "A DOG OF A DAY " The Williamstown CY's, to a person, congratulates Paul "Dog" McGowan on kicking 24 goals last Saturday (19/8) in what is the highest goal kicking tally for one match in club memory . His performance lifted his goal total to 102 for the season, the Club's best performance since the war (what war?) . With this century, Paul, we expect similar scores in the coming cricket season with the C .Y.'s . HOW OLD IS THE GENERAL? Peter "The General" Fox was caught off guard last Saturday when a surprise party was held for him at the No rt h Brunswick clubrooms . Gail and Craig put in a lot of hard work in organising everything, and are to be congratulated on their efforts - the birthday boy was in shock from one of the best kept secrets ever known at the Club. And how old is "General"? ) I'm sure I heard someone mention something that sounded like fourteen, but I might be wrong . Either that or he is the youngest bloke to play 6,000 games for our Club.

Hearty congratulations, Foxy, from your family and many friends .

50 GAMES UP AT DE LA Congratulations to Damian Toohey on reaching 50 games with De La Salle this week (26/8) . "Too's" is one of the up and comers who will lead the club back to the top of A Grade soon . He played for 2 years in the Under 19's and captained the side to our first U19 Premiership last year. Damian has quickly adjusted to senior football an d has been a consistent performer in the firsts this year . VVe're looking forward to big things from this bloke . Especially his 21st Party in a few weeks which should be a great night . Seriously, though, I'm surethis is only the start of the milestones for Too's.

This year Craig ,vas given the job of ruckman and has performed extremely well against bigger and stronger opponents . His marking around the ground has also been a delight to watch . All at Old Carey wish Craig the best for the finals series and the future .

YOUNGY CRACKS 15 0 Players and supporters at Hampton Rovers congratulate Mark Young who last week (19/8) played his 150th VAFA game with the club .
