EDITORIAL by Phil Steven s
Good afternoon football followers . Last Sunday the VAFA hosted the Big V and Gold Pass Luncheon . The day was an outstanding success and today I have asked Ian Mun ro to review the occasion - special congratulations to Ian who painstakingly organised iie day.
Big V/Gold Pass Luncheo n The Gold Pass & Big V Luncheon last Sunday was a great p relude to the A Section 1st semi-final between University Blues and Marcellin OC . The VAFA entertained the 1939 interstate team and the newly appointed VAFA historian, Mr Joseph Johnson, and introduced the new GM, Phil Stevens. The Guest Speaker was Simon Beasley, former Amateur Carnival Best and Fairest winner in 1976 (Uni of WA), and full forward with the Footscray FC . aHis address on "To merge or not to merge" was most stimulating and well received by us all . The Roll Call of those present was a "who's who" of Amateur football . There were present some 16 Best and Fairest winners, 13 Australian Amateur players, dozens of inter-state players, 5 ladies and many, many other notables! It was a very special day for two other reasons . Firstly, it was Father's Day and one wonders how many of thos oresent had special leave passes! More importantly, it was the 50th anniversary of the declaration of World Ware 2 and, at the Government's request, our flags were flown at half mast . Two members of the 1939 team gave their lives during the War . John Atkins (Old Melburnians), A Section Best and Fairest for 1939 and son of the former President of the Association, Mr Ernest went down on HMAS Perth in Sunda Strait on the night of 29th February, 1942 . Geoffrey Waring (Old Atkins, Brightonians) was a prisoner of war on Ambon from 1942 to 1945, spending his last year in hospital where he died on 13th July, 1945 . He had been an outstandingn boy at Brighton Grammar where he was Captail of the School in 1934 as well as being a champion athlete and winning the school Memorial Rhodes Prize . Those in attendance from the 1939 team were - Len Boyd-Gerny (MHSOB), Bill Coghill (Murrumbeena), Ted Gordner(Uni Blacks), Bill Dexter (Geelong), Har ry Hutchins (Old Scotch), (Ivanhoe), Roy Quinn (Ormond), Mervyn Tickell (Collegians), and GeorgeIan Johnson (Coburg), Ron Moore McTagga rt (Timekeeper) . Apologies were received from Ray Steele (Captain - Uni Blacks), and Ray Venn (Manager - Collegians and former VAFA Treasurer) . Wally Taylor (Vice-captain - Collegians) Unfortunately Ian Munro was unable to trace the whereabouts of "Curly" Ellis (Ivanhoe), John Hunt (Teachers' College), Garth Mitchell (Elsternwick) and Fred Pollard (State Bank) . The two delegates were Fred Coldl~_-,y (Hampton Rovers), who was away and the late Alby Cardwell (St Pauls) . Bill Ross (U ni Blacks, also in 1938) could not be contacted whilst Doug McRae (Old Scotch) and Tom Paige (State Bank) had passed on, the latter on his 77th birthday, last year. Cr Jim Fidge (Vice-President and former Executive member) kindly acted as chauffeur to and from Geelong for Bill Dexter (Geelong) and Bruce Wemyss (Caulfield Gram's - 1938) for which we thank him most sincerely . Many were delighted to see Bill Sykes (Uni Blues) down from Tatong (near Benalla) and especially 'Hampton Rovers) from Mollymook, NSW . Sam thoroughly enjoyed the company of his fellow guestsSam Bi rt le s . Denis 1.~ !-Ii Blacks and Pat Cornder, Mervyn Da v idson (Hampton Rovers), Manson Russel (Old Scotch), Noel Rundie (Ormond), Don Moro ne (Old Scotch) and his son-in-law Ian Rice (Collegians and new coach of Hampton Rovers) . The greats of Amateur Football, BEST and FAIRESTS included the following : Bernie Angel (St Bernards O C/Uni Blues) "A" 1980, Sam Bi rtthe les (Hampton Rovers) "A" 1949, Len Boyd-Gerny (MHSOB) "C" 1938, Ma B xrmond)"A "1948, IaOn Cordner (Uni Blacks, OMs) B'u 1978bMervyn avidson (Hampton Rovers) naohn HBlacks) ye s continued over

Last minute withdrawals were Norm Beattie (Coburg) "A" 1969 & 1970 and Ian Hayden (Uni blues) "A" 1960 (Eq) . Five members of the 1938 team who were entertained last year by the Association came back for a "second helping" and these included Jack Coulson (Elsternwick), Alec Guild (Old Scotch), Roy Kline (Elsternwick), Clarrie Vontom (Collegians) and Bruce Wemyss (Caulfield Gram's) . The half an hour "drinks" before lunch and he half an hour with coffee after lunch enabled many guests to carry on where they had left some 10, 20 and up to 50 years ago! All in all a great afternoon and one that will long be remembered by those present .
A SECTION PREVIEW by Phil Stevens I took acall from The Villain last Tuesday (2 a .m . London time) and he was most interested to hear that Marcellin won, but wasn't too surprised as he told me that he would have selected them as well . The other thing Tom wanted to state that he hoped I wasn't ruining The Villain's" column and losing his readers (or he used words to that effect!! ) Anyway backto business and Marcellin did win (as tipped) in a game that would not have had the football purists jumping from these seats in applause, as the game never at any stage reached any great heights. It was virtually a battle of defences all day with Marcellin nullifying Blues supposed edge in talent by playing close-checking football in the heavy conditions at Elsternwick Park . I felt that Blues were going to be in for a dirty day when skipper John Kanis missed from close in after having received a 50 metre penalty . Also I felt that at quarter time (Blues 2 .5 Marcell in 2 .2) Blues were doing better in the ruck and in the air but were gaining no advantage from this at ground level . Blues at this stage were starting to miss very much champ full forward Don Mclnnes, who missed the game through aleg injuryasthe ball on many occasions gotto within scoring range but was "whisked" awayand carried upfield by the highly efficient Marcellin defence, who also were having similar problems converting although the long-sleeved Boysen was providing a focal point through which to aim attacks . At half time Blues 3.6 lead Marcellin 4.3 and one thought that the first side to crack during the "all important" third quarter" would probably lose . This didn't happen and the game continued in the same slogging see-sawing manner as in the first half, and at the final change Blues held a slight lead 4 .10 to 4 .5. Coach Murray B rowne atthree quartertime must have pushed the"running"button because inthe last quarter Marcellin broke the Blues spirit by kicking 7 straight and displaying all the skills of aside with its heart on higher honours . Marcellin's butsy win (11 .10 to 6 .13) takes it into next Saturday's preliminary final against the loser of today's OrmondCollegians clash . THE SECOND SEMI FINA L One win each this year gives both Ormond and Collegians the belief that they should go into today's gams as the favourite to move into this years Grand Final . The match promises plenty as the winner gains an enormous advantage over both the loser and Marcellin in the race for this season's greatest honour . On paper at least the game looks to be a classic encounter between the youth and enthusiasm of the Collegians' side versus the vast experience and proven talent of the Ormond combination . Ormond's Jobling, Kingston, McCooke, Taylor and the McDonald boys have the uncanny knack of turning it on and really producing when the situation warrants it.
Captain Stuart Hinchen who will be keen to lead his side to victory in this game, the effervescent Ray Berzins, who did well in the last clash between these two sides and star backman Matt Galbraith will be the players Collegians will be looking to to inspire a victory. It's hard to go against the finals specialists of the past four years and for this reason I select Ormond to win by about 25 points.

2ND SEMI FINA L Last Saturday Old Brighton continued their successful form in finals games of recent years by accounting for a very determined Bulleen Templestowe . The game was a credit to both sides with fierce tackling being a feature on a particularly heavy Elsternwick Park . The overall strength of Brighton's on-ball players managed to allow them to pull away at the start of the ast quarter. Bulleen persisted up until the final siren but could not bridge the gap . Both sides had many great players with Paul Woff, Andrew Pryor and "Shooter" Shippen being the best for Brighton while Andy Smythe, Clarke and Mayne performed well all day for Bulleen . This week we have contributions from both Therry and De La Salle. Both sides are confident of winning this reek's clash . The score for this year is presently one all . With the ground hopefully being dryer this week, this should be fast and fiercely fought game . Read both reports carefully and then you pick a winner ? DE LA REPOR T De La Salle comes to Elsternwick Park today eager to regain its status as an A Grade Club . The achievements of the powerful De La sides of late 70's and 80's have been well documented and form a special niche in Amateur Football history . The Class of '89 is determined to redress the failure of '88 . Under the astute coaching of Bernie Dunn, De La have developed into a hard-running and disciplined combination . Losses to St Bernards, Therry and at Brighton have been the only hiccups in a steady progression to today's final . The team leaders Gary Connolly, Mick "K-Weapon" Knuppel and Craig "Eating's Cheating" Wright have assisted their"Bulldog" coach in providing an excellent example of the De La dedication . Two players who have come under the umpires' notice are Carl Anderson and Mark Lowe . We congratulate them on their shared Second Place in the Competition B&F and obviously De La will be hoping for two good games from them today . De :a's forward line has kicked more goals than any other team and leading goalscorers Grant Sheedy and Peter "Ganga" Green will provide important avenues to goal again . Of course, many other players have been piercing the big sticks and De La will be hoping for a consistent hard working forward line to shut down the attacking Therry backs . De La's backline, led by its skipper, has been quite attacking as well throughout the season . Damien Kinsella, John O'Callaghan and Shane Davey have been surprise packets in defence . They face big tasks today in countering the clever Therry forwards, who caused problems to De La in the Round 11 fixture. The On-Ball setup has varied all season for the Blue and Golds . Chris Campbell and Colin McLounan have `ine seasons (even if the men in white didn't notice them once!) and their talents will be required in the hurlyburly contests today. Overall, De La has good depth and an evenness which allows Bernie Dunn to swap his team effectively 'hrough the course of a game. Perhaps this may just give De La the edge in a tight Second Semi .
Therry CCOB its preparation for this iyear's assault the 'B' Grade Flag on a sweltering day in the middle of January began . Things began shakily for the still relatively young club, which entered B Grade in 1986 and i nished third the following two seasons, with the loss of th of iree ots brightest stars, 1988 Best and Fairest winne r P.S . During the remaining three Amateur Footballers this season's photographs taken during the day will be Greg Nyman (retired), dynamic centre half back Tim Taylor and Victorian Amateur wingman Paul featured (courtesy Nancy McTaggart) . Cro e h(ioiersseas) . It lost 3 pre- season practice games although(Carlton) importantly the Club had organised opponent s Phil Stevens I g et class (University Blues A Grade Finalists '89 and Keilor and Strathmore 1st & 2nds '89 EOFL) Have a good day . . Have unavailability of class players such as Dennis Caslaldi, Michael Tadnac and Paul McCann did little for new coach Tony C rott 's confid b ut a fighUng win in the opening game against high talented Old Melburnians lifted the e'ub's optimism . The club, however, struggled with indifferent form in the first half of the season . The turning point for the club's 'ortunes occurred when the rains came with its games against finals' aspirants Old Tri nity and Old Melburnians at their homes in the heaviest conditions imaginable . Only the 20 players who took the field against OMs that Jay in conditions that were surely the worst that Amateur football has even been played in, will know what reserves ` raw courage they had to call upon to win the game . In fact since that day Therry has suffered only one defeat 'o a desperate St Bernards in Round 15 . 2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

What has made Therry such a formidable unit in the second half of the year? Well surely it has to be that the present side is the closest, most even combination that the Red with the Gold V has put on the ground One piece of evidence supporting this fact was the recent B Grade Best and Fairest count were 17 Therry players gained votes more than any other club in the competition . Highly talented players include high leaping forward Jumping John Zanetti, durable captain Scott Ramsay and master handballer Gerard Biddiestone . Overall, however, the side is an even, well-balanced combination with many players having their best seasons ever as a result of the faith shown by coach Cro tty. One of the best finds of the year has been pint sized rover Lau re nce Clifton who must have a heart as big as himself and has given great support to the irrepressible k9atton . The side has a nice blend of experience and youth which should be of great benefit during the finals series and good depth with the great forms of players in the Reserves and Under-19s . Therry has great respect for its opponents, De La Salle, but can assure all Therryites that there will be no more dedicated, relentless unit taking the field this year than the ones wearing the red with the gold V .

One can only admire Banyule for the way they went about their business of demolishing Old Haileybu ry last week at the Beach Oval in perfect conditions . In every facet of the game the Bears had an answer. Total commitment by a team fully prepared to run straight at the ball gave Old Haileybu ry little opportunity get into the game. When assessing the game it's difficult to find a week link, the backline was superb, the Bears wore their opponents like a glove . Running players set about their business with real purpose, none better than young John Turnbull who ripped through Old Haileybu ry with ease. Leigh Holt knocked up getting the hard ball, while up-forward Peter Adams showed real polish to finish off . Among others Lusk was very damaging, John Gilham, Wayne Gibson, Saunders and And rew Mills were best for the Bears . Even when big Dave Williams left the field injured in the second term a minor lapse gave Old Haileybury a sniff, but not for long . The different between them was the way Banyule used the ball . Direct disposal to the northern end was all that was necessary, a straight kick resulted in many easy goals for the Bears . What can I say about Old Haileybu ry. A lack of discipline in the early part of the game was crucial, short passing across the ground became the pattern, one which led to their demise . Maybe their successful season to date has gone to their heads, to win finals you've got to earn them . Simon Meehan showed the way, particularly in the first half. His endeavour was an example to his players, but he couldn't do it alone . Glen Tanner caught my eye with some clean ball handling and Smith showed plenty of pace. Up-forward And rew Walden with 7 goals tried hard, but the ba!l wasn't delivered properly . Old Haileybu ry were most disappointing to say the least and today they better get back to basics or they'll find themselves back in C grade next season . NOW TO TODAY' GAME - PRELIMINARY FINAL ( at Brunswick) Assuming that today's game is in heavy going the scores should be fairly close, a hard slog but the prize, promotion to B Grade. I have maintained throughout the season that Old Haileybu ry and Banyule are the best two teams in the competition and today I'm sticking with the Bloods to defeat St Kilda . Old Haileybury must build on their failure to deliver the ball properly . Dar re n Seccull or John Bingham have the manpower to star the momentum . Glen Tanner, Connell, Phillips and Smith are all good runners. Upforward And rew Walden must be given the ball quickly. Simon Meehan and particularly Chris McKenzie must dominated for the Bloods to win . St Kilda have peaked at the right time, their form has been good in the wet . An overall team effort will be required to topple the Bloods . The Saints will again tag their opponents' running players, a move which hpaid dividends against Balaclava . Tony Riddell must be the focal point at fu!l forward while Charlie Capiron, Trabinger, Buzza, Avitable, Lee and Sherman must perform all day. Captain B rendan Boyd at centre half back will need all the support possible from his backline players . If attitude means anything, you can't go past Peter Olivieri, coach of St Kilda . He's astute, keen and mean and I'm looking forward to another famous three quarter time speech similar to one out at Waverly ! After assessing both line-ups, Old Haileybu ry to win . 4

1989 is now over for all but three E Section Clubs . The only questions to be answered are those about the Grand Final sides competing today . Last week provided some excellent football, close results but on surprises . The senior game proved to be a disappointment for Aquinas as St . Bedes found a little extra in the final term to finish too strongly for the Bloods. Final scores saw St . Bedes 11 .5 to Aquinas 7.12 . This game while close all day always gave the impression that fitness would decide the result and in this department St . Bedes seemed better equiped . This now leaves West Brunswick (Reserves) and Aquinas (Reserves), St . Bedes (Seniors) and La Trobe (Seniors) competing for the flag today. Congratulations to these clubs on their efforts this year and good luck for today's games. In the early game we have Wests and Aquinas. The Senior match sees La Tro be attempt to win back to oack premierships against a fit and fast running St . Bedes in what could well prove to be the match of the year. Both sides are disciplined, talented and each has several potential match winners . St . Bedes will be well served by T. Beasley . Seeley and Captain Riordan . La Tro be will be looking for big performances from Wriggleswort h, Poole, Little and spearhead Wilson . The overall evenness of the La Trobe side could give hem the points . In all I anticipate a great day's football . My selection will probably reflect my natural bias but am sure that the followers of E Section of the Amateurs will forgive me on this occasion . Congratulations to Roland Mag ro's Unde rtakers who join the Noddies in E Grade promotion for 1990 . After ~hree years of commitment and hard work on and off the field, the Unde rtakers were able to rejoice at achieving his cherished goal . It was a comfortable preliminary final win on the scoreboard, but the match itself was a hard fought, keenly contested affair with no quarter given by either side . The Reds, a little undermanned, were beaten in the second and third quarters by an Undert akers combination which bounced back from its semi-final defeat to display nard running and desperate team work . The Redz commitment could not be faulted but an ineffective forward ne provided the Undertakers with countless opportunities to springboard attacks from defence . No one performed his task better than "Macca" McDonald who ran all day, had 25 possessions and never stopped encouraging and helping out (Best on Ground) . Other Unde rtakers to perform well were coach, "Maggie" Mag ro, "Redder" Funnell, "Mimi" Mau ro , "Madjack" Phelan, "Gorky" Park and "Go Down" Ashby . The Redz can be proud of their achievements this year under the coaching of Laurie Duffus who has esurrected the club from possible foreclosure a few years ago . They can set their sights on greater success next season . Better players for the Redz included Al Jolson (best finals performer after B .O.G . against Brewers n semi), The Ba ron, Al Grassby, The Bucket, "Chicken" Koop, "Sidney" Sheldon, "Lifestyle" Condon and "Gezza" Moloney. GRAND FINALS : (Sandringham Oval) Reserves : Noddies v Will y I fancy the Towners can continue their form and knock off the Noddies by three goals . Flrsts :Noddies v Undertaker s I can't see the Unde rtakers reversing the semi result unless they jump the Noddies early and then man 0 man them for the rest of the match . The Noddies have had the opportunity to set their goals beyond an -Grade promotion, something the Unde rtakers may still be thinking about today . Good luck Jim and Roland . ~ay the best side win .

UNDER 19's SEMI FINAL S SECTION 1 (First Semi Final) Old Paradians Green made it three victories in a row over Ormond in 1989 when they won the semi final by twenty one points. As predicted O'Loughlin and Paul Joyce did play well for Parade as did Rowe, Stuckey, Canavan and Roberts . Peter Board and Terry Canavan each kicked three goals as Parade stormed to a leac Ormond's stars of the season did not shine and John Doble had to rely on Kelcher, Orr and Kraus for a lot of drive. Ormond can be well proud of their 1989 success - up from Section 2 and a finalist too, mean that the hierarchy and John Doble can be well pleased with their season's success . SECTION 2 (First Semi Final) University Blacks commenced impressively and with Longley active up forward went to a twenty two point lead at the first change. As the second quarter progressed St . Bernards were noticeably quickening the tempo of their game as Wood, Kennedy and Doran all came into their own to boot their side into attack on many occasions. Through sheer persistence St. Bernards had reduced the Blacks lead to six points at the long interval . The Black's had a big chance to sew up the game in the third quarter as they were kicking to the scoring end and as St . Bernards played with seventeen men for the statutory fifteen minute period . The Blacks despite strong play from Nicholas Lilee and Paul Weigard were only able to lead by eleven points at three quarter time. In the last quarter Martin McGeown took control of the air for St . Bernards as theBlack's Anthony Hengel tired . McGeown was able to direct the ball for his running players to swarm forward where they whittled the Blacks lead away. For several minutes the scores remained tied and just ad thoughts turned to a replay St, Bernards managed to break the nexus with a timely goal . They thoroughly deserved to win as they had played far more precisely than had the Bloods during the second half .
s tie fact that the Old Xaverians have gathered momentum as the season has progressed . The De La Salle icraard line has been the best in Under 19 football as it has had two focal points namely Brasher Fium e both of these players troubled the Old Xaverians during the season . Others who have done welland for De La nclude He g an, Jackson and Watts while for Old Xaverians much will be expected from Captain and Best & Faire st Winner Dalton whose early injury robbed Xaverians of mid season drive. In the ruck duels the Xaverian duo Moran & Wilson will be difficult to defeat all day . The running players fed by this duo include King, the dynamic Dillon and Pet roff . To select the winner is a difficult task as forfeits have prevented me seeing each s!de at its best . The Xaverians will have a full list while De La Salle must service their senior sides today . This along with their two week lay off and the Xaverians better recent form prompts me to select Old Xaverians . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 Prelimina ry Fina l Old Brighton and St . Bernards meet at Oval 15 for the right to play in Section 1 next season and to challenge old Scotch next Saturday . The sides meet in Round 9 when Old Brighton won by twenty six points . Stars rr at day are still the prominent players for each side whose efforts today could well decide the game's results . or St . Bernards to be successful its defenders will have to nullify star Brighton forward Knight whose seven goals on June 17 swung the game . His supply line comes via Templeston, Ja rv is, Lade and Bustard who n turn feed off the ruck dominance of Williamson & Joynson . Big Martin McGeown will nullify much of thd drive of the big Brighton duo but I suspect he will lack the necessary pace to compete all day in around the ground duels . The elusive Kennedy who did well against Old Brighton as he did last week will need guarding to prevent him feeding Wood and Perrett on his forward line . Other consistently good St. Bernards players ,,,,no will need guarding include Horn & Overman . St. Bernards will bring enthusiasm and pace into the game but I believe they will be held through Old Brighton's height, strength and greater depth of talent . Old Brighton should emerge winners. UNDER 19 SECTION 3 P re liminary Fina l Mazenod and Hampton Rovers meet at Oval 4 for the right to compete in Section 2 next season and to challenge Old Trinity for the premiership next Saturday . Each side has won at home against the other during the season . n Round 5 Mazenod won by sixty six points, whereas in Round 14 Rovers won by seven points . Good players for Mazenod who will need to be checked include Fisher, Hampton signal and Principe . Regular goalkickers i ave included Riley, Principe and so the Rover's defence will have to be on constant alert to blunt Mazenod attacks . A big hope for theMcLean Rovers will be the ruckwork of McCall as well as the consistently good oiay of Earle, Williams and Blaskett . Selection of the winner is no easy task especially as I don't know whether ;he Rovers will be at full strength as they had two players reported in the First Semi Final . Based on the season's performances I expect Mazenod to win although the playing conditions at Albert Park will suit Hampton Rovers .
( Second Semi Final) Old Scotch defeated Old Brighton by fourteen points to win promition and a grand final berth . Scotch had good players in ruckman Gibb, defender Jamie Sinclair and star forward Millington whose three goals made him the highest scorer on either side. Scotch Coach "Gus" Taylor and his advisors were able to plan to nullify many star Old Brighton players which threw pressure on lesser lights to play at match winning level . Ruckman Williamson battled hard for Old Brighton as did Mo rton and Jarvis but their efforts were in vain . SECTION 3 (First Semi Final) Hampton Rovers made me appear foolish in my prediction of the outcome of this match when they defeated Thomastown by thirty points . The Rovers did benefit from McCall's ruck dominance and through Milat they had a forward who made maximum use of his opportunities . Other good Rovers included Blaskett, Williams, Hender and Earle . While Thomastown was again well served by their consistent trio, rover Battista, captain and ruck ro ver Papaiaonou and Formosa . The young Thomastown side will have benefitted greatly from their season's experience under the coaching of Dave Gann and their players can approach season 1990 with confidence . (Second Semi Final) Old Trinity Grammarians in their debutant season have qualified for promotion to Section 2 for Season 1990 . They earned this right by defeating Mazenod by thirty eight points after a fairly one sided game . Trinity Captain Harvey again starred for his side. He received strong support from Phillips, Bingenham and Simms while for Mazenod their consistently good players McLean and Signal again did well with the assistance of Paton, Fisher and King . Trinity triumphed whereas Mazenod has first to overcome Hampton Rovers before it can challenge Trinity superiority for the fifth time this season . PREVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED 9/9/198 9 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 Leader De La Salle Blue and in form Old Xaverians meet on the Brighton Beach Oval . De La Salle will be coming off a two week hiatus and may be sluggish in the opening minutes which could presenttheir opponents with an early break. In their two 1989 encounters De La Salle Blue won both . In Round one De La won by forty nine points whilst in the Round 10 mud De La won clearly by twelve points. It could only happen in Melbourne!!! Last Friday Elsternwick Park's curator Patrick spent 4 hours using an absorbent mat to remove litres and litres of water from the saturated centre wicket area of the ground . Could hardly believe that Ga ry 'Elvis' Clancy, 'wasn't on something' as he went through his 'White Wacker' nominations last week . Perhaps it was his tight underpants that kept him moving about . *** What is the mysterious training oil that makes Tommy 'I'm on Fi re' Zapadlo zip around the boundar y line quicker than usual? Perhaps it ;s not the lotion after all but whe re one (i nadve rtently) applies it that does the trick . *** Thanks to the G .M . for looking after Big Mike's tunnelballs after the latter overlooked them at training . Most goalies know that Thursday night wouldn't be the same without Mike's tunnelballs . *** The recent VAFAUA Golf Day was a resounding success and it will take the Royal East Malvern course a while to recover . Highlights included :• Blandy's prowess at the water hazards; • Steve Clinch's fine 79 to win the best raw score ; • G. Thwaites winning two balls for the best handicap score ; • Longest drive - Tim Shea re r whose hooked drive landed in the back of a passing ute on the S-E A rterial . The ball eventually stopped in Berwick ; • Worst Tee Shot - 'Arnold' Belcher whose woeful slice almost caused a six car pile up on Warrigal Rd . We trust that Malvern allows the boys back next year !
*** The Umpi res duly recognise and acknowledge the efforts and commitment of colleague Wayne 'Tram'
. Quiet and unassuming and in Lyons who has just announced his retirement from the whistle blowing .ranks recent times, dogged by a severe knee injury, Wayne is bowing out quietly Thanks for services rendered Wayne. *** The Finals Countdown . . . . . . . . Mike and Russell ,
So effective was his work that he was able to roll the wicket on Friday afternoon giving the ground a beautifully dry centre for Saturday and Sunday's game. Then followed that sensational Melbourne Monday and guess what Patrick was seen doing - HE WATERED THE ROCK HARD CENTRE FOR HALF AN HOUR TO SOFTEN IT SLIGHTLY!! ! *** Next week I will announce the Four'n Twenty Pies/VAFA Club Championship Trophy winning club for 1989 . The winning club received a beautiful trophy from Four'n Twenty which it holds for twelve months - the club receives a smaller replica of this trophy which the club keeps . Last year the clubs that didn't field U19's, received a score half the highest score in place of their U19 team - this year it is felt that it would be fairer to award clubs without U19's the average score calculated taking all VAFA clubs into account . Points are awarded thus : 3 points for each senior win ; 2 points for each reserve side win and 1 point for each Under 19 win . *** Reminder to all Sportsmen/women of the Week Winners - see you at 5 p .m . next Friday : GM's "Happy Hour". *~* Good luck to all grand, semi and preliminary finalists today - may the best sides win and may the losers accept defeat graciously, pleased with the knowledge that they have been much more successful than many of the sides in the competition . ~t * ~F

CONGRATULATIONS BULLDOG ON 200 GAME S This week (9/9), whilst De La Salle attempts to regain its rightful position in A Grade, skipper Gary Connolly will play his 200th game for the club . Bulldog (as he's affectionately known) started with the club in 1978 . He missed the 1979 Premiership through injury but was a vital member in our 1980 . 83, '84 Premiership sides . In 1984 he also finished runner-up in the Best and Fairest, was boted the most improved player, and was presented with the Most Outstanding Achievement Award . He also coached our Under 16's to a flag that year. In a remarkable career he has played 195 in the firsts and has captained the side for the past 2 years . In what may be his final season, all at De La could think of no finer way to show our appreciation than to win another premiership . Congratulations Bull . 150 TO ORMOND'S ROD STRAHA N All at Ormond congratulate Rod Strahan on playing his 150th gmae for the club in the last round this season . After joining Ormond from Old Haileybury Juniors, Rod has played the majority of his games in the Reserves . Although on occasions had mde his impression in the Senior grade - one of these memorable games being the 30 seconds he played against Parkside this year. Rod has been a member of several Reservr, grade Premiership sides and is currently vice captain of the Reserves, a position he has held for the past 3 seasons. Rod is a very popular player off the field and always makes his contribution to social functions, mainly providing the entertainment whilst trying to speak or trying to latch onto an unassuming female - normally without any success with either . Well done Rod on reaching your 150th (Godfrey reckons you have played 149 too many) and let's hope that for the next 150 we see more than one over head mark .

WHEN THE KEY PERSON IS NOT AROUN D Every business has people whose skills are crucial to its production and profits . These "key" people might range from the general manager to an employee with specialised skills such as an accountant, engineer or designer. Key people not only exist in larger companies, but also play a very large role in small firms as well . The loss of a key person could cause profits to drop, or important customers or major accounts may be lost because the key person may have had many business contacts . It may be that competitors choose this time :o capitalise on the weakness created in the business or the business may be obliged to pay outstanding loan accounts. On top of all these possibilities is the substantial costs that might be incurred in replacing and training someone else .

A solution to the problem is to have immediate cash to keep the business going and meet its financial obligations . The company could get this finance by borrowing, using existing profits or selling assets . The best solution to get the right amount of cash when it is needed most is to have a key person insurance oolicy. This works in two ways . A business can take out permanent insurance on the life of a key person, but the policy is owned by the company. It provides the business with an investment component, which can be borrowed against or used to 'uod severance pay, long service or retirement benefits . The other way is split dollar insurance where the payment of the premium is "split" between the employer and the key person . In this situation the premium the employer pays may be tax deductible, the investment -omponent is usually tax free after 10 years and the policy has a cash value which can be borrowed against . The advantage of key person insurance are obvious - the right amount of cash when it's most needed and a tax-free investment for the company or the key person . The policy can be CPI linked, with a cash value generally available after two years and a loan facility at 14 oer cent. Disability and major trauma (such as a heart attack, cancer or paraplegia) benefits can be added . For further information call your National Mutual Agent or ring Sara on 618 4123 .

What the Coaches sa y G reg Paine (Promotions and Development Officer) asked each coach -"WHY WILL YOUR TEAM BE PREMIERS??" Here are the answers to Greg's question : D SECTIO N John Walshe - Thomastown : "We have a lot to make up for after the second-semi, so we are very determined to make amends" Bob Jameson - Old Mentonians: "We've been ver consistent during the second half of the season and are looking forward to the Grand Final . We've been one of the best teams in D grade over the past few seasons but the club has never won a senior flag . To win this senior flag is motivation enough ." E SECTIO N Colin O rvad - LaTro be Uni : "We are looking to a great game and have a healthy respect for our opposition . Last year's final's experience should see us through ." Vern Boag - St Bader : "The club has enthusiasm and a good blend of experience and youth . We've had a good lead up to the finals and an overall team effort without individualism should see us through :" F SECTIO N Jim Fotiniotis - Mazenod : "We are very motivated to do well in our first year in the VAFA . The only real yardstick to doing well is a Premiership - so we must win ." Roland Mag ro - St And re ws: "We will win because we are a very committed team" WHAT THEY SAID AFTER SUNDAY'S GAME : Murray B rowne - Man:ellin Coach : "We were more desperate, players who were down early came right into it in the last quarter. We had a good lead-up through some close, pressure games ." John Kanis - Uni Blues Captain : "They manned up and continually pressured us. We were unable to break clear and run the ball and were undermanned up forward "

Personality Par s CONGRATULATIONS JASON RICHARDSON Well done Jason Richardson on reaching 5 0 games with De La Salle . Jas started in the Under 19s in 1987 and was another of their premiership players last year. He has adjusted well to senior football with his pace making him an exciting player to watch . Jas epitomizes yuppyism . Besides the name, and his flat top haircut, he is the only member of our side to drive a BMW - his mum's ! Congratulations on your milestone, mate . 50 GAMES TO OLD HAILEYBURIANS' GOA L- SNEA K Classy forward G reg Lasscock has reached the 50 game milestone in his third year at Old Haileyburians . With all the laissez faire of David Gower, Lassa has already distinguished himself as a forward of great economy of motion and style, in the tradition of similarly effortless characters such as Andy Home. Going by Andy's recently expounded theory that pace in a player thwarts lingevity, Lass obviously has a great chance of playing many more games ! Greg's effortlessness cannot disguide what a ganderous player he can be however . Already he has kicked around 150 goals for the club, including seven in the firsts earlier this year against Balaclava . In his first year in the Under-19s he posted 55 goals, including a superb 6-goal performance which set his team on the way to a preliminary final win against Old Scotch . Blonde, if not quite a bombshell, he can be extraordinarily clever in weaving his way through apparently congested attacking zones with ease . The rest of the Lasscock family has also taken an active role in the club's life, and Greg's younger brother CAM has provided one of the most heartening stories of this season in his fight-back to health after a shocking pre-season injury. 50 GAMES UP : KEV MULLIN S Its taken four years but he's made it. Kev started with De La Salle back in 1986 and today plays his 50th game. He is an important key position player who can turn a game if he is "switched on" . Kev was our Most Improved Player in 1988 and this year has continued to impress with his vice-like marking . Look out Therry! I'm sure he'll be switched on today. CONGRATULATIONS THOM O The Thomastown Committee and Supporters congratulate out Under 19s, Reserve and Senior sides on the way they have performed this season . Commiserations go to the Under 19 and Reserve teams on being beaten in their finals appearance, but they were not disgraced . Well done fellas . Best wishes to the Seniors in their grand final today .
