EDITORIAL by Phil Stevens

Good afternoon football followers . As the season is drawing to a close I thought I would review some of the editorials that draw favourable responses from people I have come into contact with . The Editorial of the season without doubt was written by John Miles (Vol 12) entitled "The Lucky Clubs" . Here is an excerpt: "This is a message to what I call the Lucky clubs in amateur football, the clubs that have an Under 19 team, the senior playersof the future, they have an advantage over the other clubs which havetofightthe neighbourhood professionals and other clubs for their adult recruits . A well managed U nder 19 team follows through to a successful senior club. Well administered and disciplined players usually finish up good senior players and clubmen . Unfortunately many senior officials of these clubs don't care enough of their Under 19s, which sees teams playing with lack of players, officials, enthusiasm, discipline . This causes trouble as the coach gest frustrated at the lack of assistance, what assistants he has got mad at the overwork, the players just get mad and do stupid things on the field , Observations this year have shown an absolute lack of officials at most games, no scoreboard operating, no interchange stewards, umpires escorts, duty officers or boundary umpires, or boundary umpires incorrectly dressed or inefficient . This is not the way to run any football match " Other interesting excerpts from editorials include : "In the VFL, players or teams in a melee are not reported unless isolated reportable incidents are noticed by the umpire during the melee as a whole . In the VAFA however a team or both teams can be reported by the umpire for the actual formation of a melee - even if during that melee nothing spiteful, reportable or anything even near reportable takes place. Why? Well in the VFL situation at the SCG the other evening, 7 umpires were supervising the melee and at all times were able to notice what was going on and be able to, in a short time, sort out the ugly situation, diffuse the melee, and thus quickly control the situation . In our competition however on most occasion we only have one impartial umpire - the rest of the officials are club connected and in the case of a melee quickly realize that club loyalty is stronger than common sense when the blood runs hot . Therefore we have a situation where one umpire would not be able, and never control an ugly melee single-handed ." - Phil Stevens on 'Melees' (Vol 9) "That the Australian Amateur Football team was comprehensively defeated by a talented, well prepared, and on the day, fitter Victorian Football Association team in the Grand Final of the recently completed National Football League 2nd Division Carnival, is disappointing . However, Amateur footballers and supporters throughout Australia should not feel any guilt, devastation or humiliation by that defeat or by our team's overall performance . Despite the significant winning margin in the final our players should be commended for their committed determination to the end . Although the VFA team was, on the day, clearly superior all over the ground they were unable to score more than six goals in any one quarter, and that, on a short ground and in perfect conditions, is further testament to our players 'never say die' attitude ." I - Australian Amateur Coach John Fisher on NFL Carnival (Vol 10) "We rarely risk our health by placing our medical condition in the hands of untrained doctors or nurses . The legislators will not permiteducation of ouryoungto be undertaken by unqualified teachers . Yet regularly, children's physical and emotional well-being is placed in jeopardy, when untrained coaches are let loose in sporting environment" David Parkin on the importance of quality junior coaches (Vol 17) At last you arrive home and un-pack wet, filthy smelling clothes, socks and boots. you try several times to ring thru your report but the Tribunal Secretary is still engaged - you finall get thru to an answering service and spend 3 mins talking to the machine . continued over. . .

• you sit down in front of the tele to relax and criticize the VFL umpires and the kids want to wrestle • you finally crawl into bed hoping for a good nights slee p • the wife wants to tell you all the things the kids have done wrong during the day while you've been out enjoying yourself." - Wayne Hen ry "Ode to an Umpire - Am I getting too old for this?" (Vol 9) "I have watched opposition teams over many years in the VAFA and thought to myself how I would love to coach this side or that side . They had so much going for them - talent, height were it counted, strength, good blend of maturity and youth, but it was all misplaced in that their vigour and approach to the game was so undisciplined it was a shame ! Some teams languish in the lower grades snot because of lack of players or talent, but rather lack of direction, leadership and that rare commodity these days, good old fashioned discipline . A great pity, because I am certain these teams could do well in higher sections if they got their act together. " - Peter O'Donahue commenting on leadership (Vol 13) "The bottom line in all of this is not playing the game hard, but playing the game fairly and having respect for your opposition - some Haileybury players last week were amazed and pleasantly impressed when Stephen Hope, the President of Hampton Rovers, went into their rooms after their club was badly beaten and shook hands with Haileybury's coach and President - I wonder how many clubs still do this out of respect to each other ? - Phil Stevens on the greatest game of all . Have a great day.

Well Ormond did what most people thought and moved into another Grand Final which says a lot for the quality of the club and in particular the club's magnificent policy of nurturing young players from an extremely young age and bringing them up through the ranks . Everyone agrees that Collegians were not disgraced and looked liekly winners for much of the game and if they can get another 'crack' at Ormond are in for a real chance at a flag . Today's game should be a thriller - what more incentive is needed : a spot in the grand final for the victor or a case of "so near yet so far" for the loser. The two teams to me seems to be teams of contrast - Marcellin are tenacious, determined, sometimes appearing low on skill with wayward kicking which lacks depth, against Collegians who are polished and can dictate games if allowed, and therin lies the key to Marcellin's success. If they can stop Collegians from dictating the game as they did against University Blues a fortnight ago they can win . Today Marcellin will be looking at Caffry and Amad to lift today as these boys didn't do that much in the win against the Blues which in fact made the win even more significant for Marcellin . Caffry was brilliant in the drawn game against Collegians recently, so he will be full of confidence and Joe Amad's great strength against Collegians' Hoyle could be telling . Marcellin's Day will need to play Berzins closer than a body stocking or else Big Ray will use his great skills in the open spaces and kick long goals . On the wing, Hewitt convincingly beat young Parkin of Collegians last time they played and was good again against the Blues but Parking and Daly can be sure to lift and provide Marcellin with headaches. Marcellin's Boysen is a good player and could trouble the experienced and reliable Schober. If Jimmy Bennett and Mark Hibbins can do well around the ground today as they did last week Collegians will be in for a big day, especially if star backman Matty Galbraith can hold the defence together by nullifying Marcellin's talented rovers and ruck rovers. Big John Origlasso if played in the ruck could give Marcellin first use of the ball as he dominated in the semifinal win and should have too much pace for Pollock or Phillips. I find it terribly hard to select a winner today as obviously the final three teams in any competition are all extremely capable, so excuse me while I flip George McTagga rt 's $2 coin - Collegians head, Marcellin tails- head Collegians to win . Good luck to both great clubs . Phil Steven s

Therry charged into A Grade with a convincing win over disappointing De La Salle last week . Showing far greater desire for the ball, Ther ry had too much system for De La Salle, who were flattered by the scores, and have a lot of work to do to keep Old Brighton off their backs today . De La started brilliantly, but their opening burst was their only sign of top form for the game . Toohey and Tully goaled early, after good work from Mullins and Wright but once Therry settled down they looked far more convincing . Hardworking full-forward Bosanko had O'Callaghan bamboozled and Laurie Clifton's pace was worrying De La . After an even first quarter, Therry took over with Strawbs dominating the air and sitting the impressive Mullins on his haunches . Mark Cro tty was the other driving force in this quarter. Allowed to run unattended by the De La defence, the rangy, long-sleeved flanker roamed up and down the ground, working hard and winning kicks at will . 'Mr. Massive' Gerard Biddlestone used his skill and experience to set up play midfield and his goal before half time was a gem . De La revived briefly when Wriggles took leave of his senses, but even at half time, Therry looked the winners . Encouraged by their coach to run and take risks, Therry sealed their promotion with a solid, workmanlike th,rd quarter. O'Rourke, who had played strongly all day at centre half-forward, goaled twice with long snaps . Captain Ramsay and Biddlestone also goaled, and De La, with the important Lowe visibly troubled by a leg injury, were struggling . Full forward Tully kept the Blue and Golds alive with his splendid marking and kicking for goal, but Therry continued to play in front, pressured De La, and consistently found team mates with accurate disposal . The final quarter was marred by rain and when Mark Crotty kicked his third from the pocket, Therry's victory was assured . De La stucktotheirtaskand goals byCampbell, Frazerand Green gave brief hopes of a late revival, but the Therry defence, led admirably by Reddick and Quinn, shut the gate and the boys from Glenroy were soon raising their arms in relief and exhilaration . Congratulations to Therry on its promotion to A Grade for 1990 . They will be hard to beat for the flag, and it remains to be seen whether their challengers will be Old Brighton, who may trouble Therry with their ruck strength and height up forward, or whether De La Salle, after successive defeats against Brighton and Therry, will be able to regroup for a second shot at the Red and Golds . Therry would no doubt be proud of the whole team, but from our spot in the stand their best players were Crotty, O'Rourke, Wriggleswo rth, Reddick, Bourke and Biddlestone . De La Salle would no doubt prefer to forget its disappointing day. Green and Sheedy struggled in the ruck and apart from key forwards Mullins and Tully who both played splendidly, most players had bad days. However, De La proved itself the top side in the home and away matches and it is hard to believe they won't give a far better account of themselves today. Today's cut-throat preliminary final brings together De La Salle, and Old Brighton Grammarians, who have long cherished a dream to play in the highest level of the VAFA . Both sides will be desperate from the first bounce . De La's outings against Old Brighton presently stand at 1 draw and 1 loss . However, this record means nothing today. There are only two things certain today . These two teams will not play each other next year and at 5 .15pm today the theme song "It's a Grand Old Flag . . ." will be heard at Northcote . Brighton to move to the G .F.

In difficult conditions last week Old Haileybu ry displayed a more urgent and physically stronger desire to make the play against St Kilda . With the wind blowing to the Sydney Rd end it was all important to direct the ball to the windward side to enable goals to be scored . Not only did the Bloods create the play, they also held up under the obvious play by St Kilda to ruffen up the younger players and to their critics amazement they actually dished out a few to show their supporters that they mean business . I mention this because I'm surprised that so called loyal supporters have doubted their own team's ability to perform under pressure . Old Haileybu ry 's ruckman Darre n Seccull gave his on ball players every chance to create the play . David Connell, Glen Tanner and Tim Snowball showed out early to give the Bloods a handy lead by half time . With Neville Schmidt in the forward line, the Bloods had a two pronged attack giving And rew Walden much needed support . The other good move was to put young Wayne Phillips into the back pocket for some much needed pace . St Kilda went into the game confident of success. Their team plan was to go straight at the ball and hoped Old Haileybu ry faltered, they didn't and the Bloods came away with a convincing win . Best for St Kilda : La Fontana, Struth, Lake, Driscoll and Buzza ; and Old Haileybu ry : Phillips, Connell, McKenzie, Snowball, Gerny and Walden . Now to today's game (at Elsternwick Park) . Grand Final : Banyule v Old Haileybu ry . These are the two best sides in C Section and on their performances to date both would be worthy winners . Today is the culmination of a whole years hard work . The planning, the recruiting, the training and finally selecting the right combination to win . Ban yule won the second semi final because their desire, their game plan and their coaching was much better. Old Haileybu ry have now regrouped, winning impressively last week, and more importantly their players showed more determination which now makes it very difficult to select the winner. Much will depend on injuries . Banyule have suffered badly with Dave Williams and Jason Fraumans under a cloud . Both these players are all important to their mission today. Big Dave Williams must play to counter Seccull and Bingham . The side who has first use of the ball from the centre and uses it properly will win . Banyule showed up Old Haileybu ry 's weakness in the second semi by tackling hard and waited for the mistakes . Today Old Haileybu ry must improve in that department . Players to watch for Banyule are upforward Tony Weston (91 goals this season), Ma rtin Legge, G reg Sutterby and Peter Adams a most damaging player with excellent ball sense . On ball players John Turnball, Leigh Holt, Wayne Gibson, Sanders and defending players Craig Ladd, And rew Mills, West and Coulson . For Old Haileybu ry taking the initiative early is utmost important . Their two big men, Dar re n Seccull and John Bingham, must give everything . Running players Simon Meehan, Chris McKenzie, David Connell and Glen Tanner must get into the game early and lead by example. This will bring their flankers into the game as shown last week. Banyule fully deserve to start favourites for the flag . They will take it right up to Old Haileybu ry from the start, pressure is paramount . They have done their homework well and to win today will not surprise me, but after accessing both line-ups I believe Old Haileybu ry are the big improvers, they have the better ball players and now have the strength to combat Banyule's more physical approach . The doubt is whether the Bloods have the right make-up under pressure . I believe they have improved enough to win today .

Perhaps fittingly, the two top sides of the ladder won both the Seniors & Reserves flags last week - Thomastown and Whitefriars respectively. Congratulations to both sides who proved throughout the year to be the best sides . In the Reserves Grand Final, Whitefriars started very warm favourites against MHSOB but struggled to shake them off during the first half and at the long break lead by only 13 points . In the third quarter, both defenses were well on top until two indiscretions from Melbourne gave Whitefriars an easy goal . Before the ball was again bounced a behind the play scuffle resulted in MHSOB Coach, Ron Verma being sent off . This seemed to string the Unicorns into attack with Atchison and Geehman prime movers in scoring two goals to bring the difference back to only 8 points at 3/4 time . However, in the last quarter Whitefriars really took control, well lead by their captain Mason, who constantly put his side into attack to enable Whitefriars to run out comfortable winners by 31 points. The main game between Thomastown and Old Mentonians got off to a slow start until Grant snapped truely for the first goal to the Panthers. Unfortunately, it was their only major for the first half, as Thomastown dominated proceedings for the first two quarters . Dean and Tony Fellows were the chief instigators - nearly all Thomastowns forward moved were initiated by one and/or the other . Norton and Vin Sciacca were trying hard for OMs, but with Dean Sciacca sent off for an incident with big Bob De Thomasis and Acre man not in the game, OMs really struggled . During the second quarter Thomastown ran all over OMs . Bubis kicked a couple of terrific goals, Farchione was dangerous and Ced ro also got a couple to give Thomastown a commanding 50 point lead at half time . 10.6.66 to 1 .10.16 . OMs made many changes at half time that looked like working when Bournon and Lever kicked two quick goals . But for the remainder of the quarter, both defences were clearly on top - Farchione and Barret for OMs being the better defenders . The last quarter was a repeat of the second as Thomastown played all over Mentone . Dean Fellows was in great touch and he provided many opportunities for Bubis and Cedro to kick goals . One in particular from Bubis after a long run was a great goal . Old Mentonians kicked a couple late in the quarter, but these were soon answered by Thomastown to run out easy winners by 66 points - 21 .10.136 to 9 .16.70. Main goalkickers for Thomastown were Cedro (6), Bubis (5) and D . Farchione (4) and better players were Dean Fellows, F. Farchione and Tony Fellows . For Old Mentonians good players were harder to find, but Macqui re, V. Sciacca and Barrett all tried hard . Congratulations to Thomastown and Old Mentonians who are off to 'C' grade next year . Commiserations to Elsternwick and Ajax who drop to 'E' grade . New clubs to 'D' grade will be LaTro be and St Bedes (from 'E') and St Kevins and Old Ivanhoe (from 'C') .

The season is now over, and looking back it would be fair to say that is was a just result . La Tro be held top spot all year and St Bede's were in second place for the greater part . These two clubs now progress to 'D' Section and both deserve promotion . The Reserves game saw West Brunswick prove too strong for Aquinas and run out easy winners in a high standard game. The loss must have been bitter for Aquinas who have been up there for a couple of years, and have not yet been able to take out the big one . In the main game St Bedes won the toss and elected to kick with the strong wind . This first quarter was probably when the game was won and lost . La Tro be playing with great determination matched St Bedes in all positions and at the siren were only trailing by 3 points, despite the 5 or 6 goal wind . The second quarter saw St Bedes only manage 2 points against the wind, while La Trobe put on 6 goals 4 points . The third quarter THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989 7

provided some great football and while La Trobe managed 1 goals 5 points with many lost opportunities, St Bedes used the wind to advantage, kicking 8 goals 4 points for the term . This left St Bedes 6 points up F the final change . The last quarter again saw St Bedes unable to score a major against the wind, while La Tro') e went on to kick 4 goals 7 points and run out winners by 23 points . Final scores were La Trobe 14.19.103 to St Bedes 11 .14.80 . Congratulations should be extended to both clubs, as I am sure that all followers of 'E' Section will agree that both clubs played good consistent football all year. Special congratulations should go to La Tro be Co F-.-h Peter O'Donohue who has managed 'Back to Back' Flags with L a Tro be . I wonder how many other coaches would have coached an 'A' grade side to a Premiership (Uni Blacks - 1974) and then taken on an 'F' grade side and achieved the success that Peter has with La Trobe . Well done Peter. Also congratulations to Colin O rvad, the Committee, and especially the Players. Well done La Trobe,

Congratulations to Mazenod on winning the Four'n Twenty Pie VAFA Championship for 1989 .

1

Congratulations to Tim "the Fruiterer" Fontiniatis on coaching Mazenod to a first up Amateur Premiership (in fact the double with the Noddies taking off the Reserves Flag as well) . The Noddies won by the anticipated 4 or 5 goal margin despite the valiant efforts of Roland Magro's Undertakers who thoroughly deserve their promotion to E-grade in 1990 . Hardworking committee members in Noddyland, including Gerry Noone, John Kealy Chris Kelly can be justifiably proud of the Noddies' achievements this year . I am confiden they will performand with great credit in E-Grade this year, possibly in similar vein to La Trobe who completed back-to-back premiership/promotions last weekend. In the Grand Final, the Undertakers were given a great chance by "Mimi Mauro", " M adjack" and "In" Hibbert . The Premiers were well served by Delmonte, Entree Palamara, Town Hall and the Ace of Spies. The Fenwick Inn (corner Fenwick and Amess Streets, North Carlton) has an excellent courtyear for the us of F-Troopers during the spring and summer months . Join mine host, Jim "Next Year M aggies" Belias for ae cocktail, a cold jar or a bottle of top class vino. Thanks to Bill Holland (Vaughan Printing) for a season of co-operation . Thanks to the club officials who supported this column throughout the season . Best wishes to all readers of TTroop until season 1990 . Cheers!! !

UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - SECOND SEMI FINA L De La Salle Blue proved their superiority with a convincing forty point victory over Old Xaverians at Monash University. As in previous games the Xaverians were unable to quieten leading goalkicker Brasher, Jackson and Fiume who virtually equalled the Xavier score between them . For Xavier And rew Dillon and Petrof played their customary high standard games . However despite assistance from Fenwick, Paul Dalton, Juracich and O'Sullivan the Old Xaverians were unable to negate the De La Salle superiority and must now play Old Paradians G re en today for the right to challenge De La Salle Blue at Elsternwick Park next week . UNDER 19 SECTION 2 - PRELIMINARY FINA L St . Bernards led all day to cause a real upset in this game as Old Brighton who lost only one home and away game now retire from the contest due to their loss of two finals . The St . Bernard's winning margin of fourteen points was the widest gap between the sides during the game . At quarter time St . Bernards aided by Brighton inaccuracy, led by two behinds . The second quarter of St. Bernards was a match winning effort as their defence stood firm in the face of Old Brighton attacks and the pressure applied to Old Brighton caused them to kick inaccurately on many occasions . Conversely the morale boosting play of Sam Doran with his penetrating kicking and "Jacko" Kennedy whose great running play included ateam lifting goal, lifted St . Bernards players . At hall time St . Bernards led by five points . In the third quarter Brighton had their share of the play and a spectacular mark and resultant goal by Knight gave the side renewed vigour. St . Bernards, not to be denied, attacked late in the quarter thanks to the ruck dominance of McGeown and the fine play of Horn and B re bner. But for lost opportunities in front of goal St . Bernard's would have led by more than two points at three quarter time. The last quarter despite the heavy rain produced the heaviest scoring of the game as both sides virtually doubled their goal tallies in this quarter. Brighton actually fell further behind as St . Bernard's ran out victors by fourteen points despite having one less scoring shot for the game. Although Old Brighton will naturally regret their final's fade out they can be well satisfied with their season's efforts as the leading side after coming from Section 3 . Congratulations to St . Bernards on gaining promotion to Section 1 for Season 1990.

UNDER 19 SECTION 2 GRAND FINAL Old Scotch and St . Bernards who have both won the right to play in Section 1 for the first time since 1983 meet on Oval 4 to decide premiership honours . St . Bernard's who have won both of their finals with a spirit akin to the first careless rapture of youth are now playing in top form . On the other hand Old Scotch who have lost only twice for the season deserve to be classified as the match favourites . Ruck duels between McGeown (St. Bernards) and Gibbs should have a big bearing on the outcome. St. Bernard's over the past two finals have used the mobile Ben Horn at boundary throw ins to ease the burden on McGeown and he has won them use of the ball regularly . The small mobile St . Bernard's players have been their final's stars over the pasttwo weeks as Kennedy, B re bner, Sam Doran and Rod Doolan have cut their opponents defences to ribbons with their fast game . Can they do it again today? - I suspect Scotch Coach "Gus" Taylor and his "minder" Brian Gibbs would have noted these movements last week and will have drawn up plans for "man on man" duels . Scotch have star players who will cause St . Bemards a lot of worry . These include captain Jamie Sinclair the Steeles, Howell, Cowper and Benne tt. Each of these players will need close scrutiny to prevent them running down the ground to provide scoring opportunities . Each side possesses a consistent forward who can be relied upon to kick goals . I suspect Millington of Old Scotch may have an easier day than Perrett of St . Bernard's as I believe Old Scotch will have the more forward moves . I expect an Old Scotch victory after a good game. Scotch have the proven record and should come into the game fresher. SECTION 3 PRELIMINARY FINAL REPLAY Mazenod and Hampton Rovers play again for the right to challenge Old Trinity. Only the venue, Oval 15 will be different from last week's game . Hampton Rovers will be all out to prevent Mazenod building a big lead as they did last week - by holding Mazenod early the Rovers will surely build their chances of victory. When the Rovers "manned up" they thwarted the apparent Mazenod advantages of pace, height and team pattern . Can Greig star again and kick multiple goals for the Rovers? Will Riley be among Mazenod's best and will he be an inaccurate as he was last week? The Rovers were the better side for three quarters last week and were unlucky not to win . I suspect the Rovers strength through McCall, Moss, Nelson and Amoo re will overcome the talent of McLean, Fisher, the strong Tetley, Signal and Principe all of whom have troubled opponents during the season . An unknown variable to all except Adrian Williams and Mark Edwards is how many F Section players can play for Mazenod today? Tony Naumoff's coaching talents were revealed in his player's dedication last week and today I expect Hampton Rovers to triumph by winning promotion and the right to challenge Old Trinity next week.

PATRONS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BRING ALCOHOL INTO ELSTERNWICK PARK .

UNDER 19 SECTION 3 - PRELIMINARY FINA L Mazenod's first quarter effort should have given them a match winning lead of thirty six points at quarter time . Not to be denied Hampton Rovers fought back in the second quarter and despite seeming Mazenod advantage in height and pace, the Rovers had cut their half time deficit to twelve points . The third quarter saw each side have periods of ascendancy although it appeared that the Mazenod game plan allowed players freedom to run into spaces to create the loose man . This the players did so well that their forward sorties were less laboured than were the Rover attacks . At three quarter time Mazenod held a sixteen point lead and with the advent of heavy rain all seemed to favourthe'Noddies . Howeverthe spectators had reckoned withoutthe indefatigible spirit of the Rovers whose constant attacks allowed them to whittle away the Mazenod lead . Late in the quarter big ruckman McCall put the Rovers ahead for the first time. As M azenod counter attacked the Rover defence stood fast and their rebound football enabled their forwards to pepper the post's for four minor scores to give the Rovers the lead by one goal . With time running out, darkness falling and heavy rain the consistent Signal with the aid of a fifty metre penalty goaled to enable Mazenod to tie the scores . The Rover's ascendancy continued but they were unable to score again priorto the sou nd of the siren . Both sides had provided a great spectacle of Australian Football in truly competitive and sporting conditions. PREVIEW OF UNDER 19 GAMES TO BE PLAYED SEPTEMBER 16, 1989 SECTION 1 PRELIMINARY FINAL Old Xaverians and Old Paradians G reen who meet at Harry Trott Oval have each won at home against the other during 1989. At Bundoora in Round 8 the Paradians won by twenty three points while at Yarra Park in Round 17 Old Xaverians won by seventy one points. The big ground will test the fitness of each side as well as their ability to play direct football . The ruck duels between Joyce and Rowe of Parade against Wilson and Moran will help decide the outcome as the winning rucks can direct the ball to the running players such as Dillon, King and R.Dalton (Old Xaverians) and Brabender, Stencil and Mills (Old Paradians) . The Parade defenders could hold the key to their side's success as Jones, Flynn and O'Loughlin are all close checking and hard hitting players who could bustle Xaverian forward off their attacking game. Neither side has been able to rely on one goalkicker and here I suspect Old Paradians could gain control through Canavan, Geary and Board all who are mobile players ; each being capable of scoring frequently . My spies tell me that the Xaverians are not as strong as they were late in the home and away season so I will take the punt and select Old Paradians G reen who held second place for most of the season . 10

Personality Pars 150 GAMES AND-PROMOTION Congratulations to Tony Park who played his 150th match for St And rews Coburg in the winning preliminary final team at Harry Trott Oval on 2nd September. "Parky", who for years has carried the big man department, was appointed senior vice-captain, a position he has responded to with many excellent performances in a consistent season . "Parky" has tasted premiership success with the reserves team 1980 and we all hope this will be repeated in 1989 .

2 x 50 GAMES AT ST ANDREWS f Congratulations to Robert Soncin and Geof Hibbe rt who have both played their 50th games for St Andrews Coburg AFC over the past few weeks . Both players have had excellent seasons with Ro b playing consistently in the close checking defender role whilst Geoff has been saddled with the job of ruckman - having the responsibility of starting the team on the right path each week, a job he has performed with zest and enthusiasm . We all hope to see both Geoff and Robert returningn in 1990 and continuing to play goo d football . Well done both of you . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Due to recent queries from umpires about club personnel inside the boundary and where they should stand the VAFA Executive has asked me to inform clubs of the following :

Only designated officials (7 in number) to be inside the fence, and if not seated to be standing against the fence : At Elsternwick Park a line is marked in front of each coach's box over which club staff should not move during play. Where coaches' boxes are provided they are to be used . Umpires have enough to do, so DUTY OFFICERS have been asked to police this requirement . *~ * Clubs who continue to disobey Mr. Hawkins' instructions not be play draws in finals games are Mazenod and Hampton Rovers!! ! Another draw this week and the two teams will play another replay, blindfolded on Nepean Highway at midnight on a Saturday night!!!!! ! "It's a Grand Old Flag" will echo through the streets of Northcote today after the B Section preliminary final . Both De La Salle and Old Brighton have the same theme song!!! It would be remiss of me not to wish my ex-c!u b Old H ai!eybury the best of luck for today's two matches . Promotion to B-grade and two wins today would certainly be just rewards for Ken Allison and Craig Meadows who as the start of the season gave the club one last year to get from C-grade . Good luck boys - my now "neutral hat" restricts me to joining you in "spirits" later on in the evening . **,t Executive had decided that it is not opposed to the idea of issuing retrospective awards to past joint winners of best and fairest awards .

Clubs could assist the research being undertaken by writing to me outlining details they have pertaining to their club . *** Any former team-mate or footba!l associate of mine who is interested in becoming involved in coaching in th e VAFA or administration with ac!ub please contact me, as Greg Paine (VAFA Promotions and Development Officer) and myself are endeavouring to assist many clubs who are looking for the "right" people to develop their club further . ~* *

WELL DONE FREAKSHOW! Congratulations last week (9/9) to Johnn y 'Freakshow' Buckley on playing 50 games for De La Salle. "The Freak" started in 1986 and before long impressed all and sundry with his uncanny skills . He was a regular lsts player last year but unfortunately .didn't receive his pre-season letter until July this year. A possible late inclusion this week for the 1sts, Johnny certainly wouldn't be out of his league. Hope you can chalk up at least another 50 John . 13

Corporate Sponsorship in Spo rt I was most fortunate this week to attend a function at the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (Vic Health), the VAFA's major co-sponsor with the National Mutual Group of Companies . Thefunction was the second sports sponsorship network meeting, organised by VHPF, Chief Executive Officer, Rhonda Galbally, and its a forum for the various sports receiving VHPF funds, to present publicly their projects for accountability and general discussion . It is also an opportunity for the audienceto listen to prominent business leadersfrom the private sector covering topics such as 'Corporate Sector Sponsorship in Sport'. Well, I and many others in attendance were fortunate to hear one of the best addresses on this topic . . . it was delivered by Ken Carnie, the Executive Director Marketing & International - Carlton United Breweries . Yes, another VAFA major sponsor CUB . . . and yet another former amatuer footballer from University Blacks and also former 'Big V' Representative. . (I've heard it said before "Australia's business leaders usually have some past connection with Amateur Football!!") Well Ken outlined to the audience the criteria applied by CUB Executives when assessing sports sponsorship and whilst over the years have been involved in many different sports and sporting events, CUB now has pin pointed which sports and events workfortheir major brand 'FOSTERS' -theflag ship of CUB . Of coursetheir major sports sponsorship dollars are placed with sporting events that have major media coverage, particularly international television coverage . Gone are the days of CUB being philanthropic towards sport . . . Today is the era of sophisticated marketing technologies designed to deliver the 'Fosters' message to a maximum audience around the world . . . at a cost effective rate. CUB has now identified those sporting events which support the international marketing strategies and gives 'FOSTERS' (and CUB) a return for their investment . That's what it is all about! ! The Melbourne Cup, VFL (Grand Final and International Matches), the Adelaide Grand Prix . . . are the key sporting events all beamed around the world . . . all requiring big $s $s $s from CUB for naming rights, signage placed precisely where the TV cameras will pick them up, and product promotion and merchandising . . . . and at the end of the day CUB will evaluate precisely what the sponsorship was worth to them in media $ terms . As CUB's boss tell us on the TV show 'Fast Forward' . . . . . . No bullsh . . .!!! A good night had by all including other VAFA personalities in the audience, Tony Duggan (NMOB) and Phil Roden (Uni . ) Coming back to more local matters those special occasion wines and ports I was discussing last week . . . well G rovers have confirmed the Club deal . . . famous Rutherglen Ports bottled with special labels to include Club Name and Section . . . all individually numbered . . . . . BANYULE COACH : John Simpson : John Simpson enjoys a proud record with the VAFA having played and coached with distinction over a 17 year period . John commenced his VAFA career in 1972 as a junior with Parkside where he captained a premiership team also winning a competition best and fairest award . John played more than 200 VAFA games with Parkside (3 years) and Ivanhoe (7 years) in A & B Grade. John has continued his significant contribution to VAFA commencing a fine coaching career in 1977. Since that time John has coached for the following clubs : Ivanhoe Juniors Ivanhoe Under 19 Ivanhoe Reserves LaTrobe University - F Grade (playing coach) Banyule - B & C Grade. A major highlight being senior coach with Banyule in 1986 when John took the club to B Grade for the first time also winning both Senior and Reserve Premiership flags . John has once again guided Banyule to B Grade in 1990 and will no doubt enjoy the ultimate reward for the 1989 season with a Premiership today. THE BANYULE STORY IN BRIEF : The Banyule Club was established in 1967 as a junior club with players in age groups from nine years to eighteen years, competing in the PDJFA . The club then moved to the DDJFA and continues to compete with distinction in that association . An Under 19 team represented Banyule in the VAFA in 1979 . The Banyule Amateur Football Club was formed in 1980 as a senior VAFA club. The Banyule Club enjoys a proud record in both junior and senior ranks having been a good training ground for VFL clubs. Players who have joined VFL ranks include : Rod Carter - Fitzroy, Swans John Christou - Fitzroy Stephen Clifford - Collingwood, Port Adelaide Greg Whitcroft - Collingwoo d Andrew Veal - Fitzroy Tony and Mark Beers - Collingwood Peter Adams - Collingwood Craig McGrath - Fitzroy. In addition many players now playing with other A, B and C grade VAFA clubs, including the captains of two A grade clubs, learned the trade at Banyule. The club is also proud to have supported the VAFA with players representing the State with distinction over a number of years ; five players and a coach from Banyule were representatives in 1989 . Banyule are very proud of their record in VAFA ranks having risen from F grade to B grade in only seven seasons, along the way achieving premierships in : 1980 : Under 1 9 1981 : F Grade - Seniors and Reserves 1983 : D Grade - Senior s 1986 : C Grade - Seniors and Reserves 1988 : C Grade - Reserves Having slipped back to C Grade for the 1988 season Banyule are now looking forward to joining B grade again in 1990 as the premier club in C Grade for season 1989 . 18

S tatistically Speaking (Phil Stevens talks with Wal Bright ) P. S. Wal, what's the re cord like between today's A Section p re limina ry finalists? W.B. Well Phil, interestingly enough Marcellin and Collegians have never met in a final or semi final . However, in head to head contests Marcellin have won ten times against Collegians and Collegians only seven times against Marcellin . P. S. So, you' re saying the odds favour Marcellin to win today ? W.B. Statistically speaking Phil perhaps . Also Collegians have a habit of not beating sides they should beat . I mean in the last home and home game Scotch whipped them by 7 goals and in round 3 Old Xaverians beat them 8 .20 to 6.14 and that was when Xaverians were looking a real relegation prospect . P. S. C'mon Wai, stats aside who'll win? W.B . Well, let me think . . . . . . . . . . . . . P. S. Okay, we'll come back to that . Wal, Therry in B Section have a p re tty impressive Amateur record so a "bar" expert told me on Saturday night . W. B . You obviously hand around knowledgeable people in bars Phil . Your expert is spot on, listen to this : Therry has never been in A Grade before (1990 they are) but have risen through the sections marvellouslyIn 1981 they were in Section F (runners up to Banyule ) In 1982 were premiers in Section E (defeated Banyule) In 1983 lost the preliminary final so stayed in D Sectio n In 1984 won the D Section premiership (beat Thomastown) In 1985 were runners up to Fawkner in C Sectio n In 1986 they failed to make the finals in B Sectio n In 1987 they were beaten in B Section preliminary final (by Marcellin) In 1988 they were beaten in preliminary final by Ke w P. S . P rett y Imp re ssive Wal . So 1987,1988 they just missed out on A Section and this year they cracked it. P.S . What about Collegians and Marcellin ? W. B . More time, don't rush me. W.B. Phil, if Old Brighton beat De La today, that means Old Brighton and Therry will both go to A Section and neither have ever been there before . P. S . That'll happen Wal, because Mark Sarau is a mate of mine . W.B. Don't you take any notice of stats, Phil? P. S . No Wal, friends are much mo re import ant ! W.B. Well you might be right, because De La have never beaten Old Brighton EVER! They never met before this season ; they played a draw mid season and the Boys by the Bay beat them by 20 points the other day. P.S . One thing I do know Wal is that I have helped Brighton to their cur re nt position . W. B. Howzat? P.S . I coached Haileybu ry last year in the C Section first semi!!! W.B. Well done indeed . P.S . Gee thanks. P. S. Well Brighty, a question for you . Who is the only Haileybu ry coach to have beaten Banyule over the last two years? W.B. It couldn't be you, all you did for Haileybury was keep them in C-grade a year longer then they should have! P. S. Thanks Wal . P.S. What's the record like between the two clubs Wal ? W. B. Banyule 9, Old Haileybury 2, and Stevo to further impress you over the last two years - Banyule 4, Old Haileybury 1 . P.S. Not too good, but gee that one win was a good day! P.S. C'mon Brighty, your selections please . W.B. Collegians, De La Salle and Banyule and Phil yours? P. S. Geelong to win the flag in 1995.

1989 Coach of the Yea r Ormond senior coach Mike McArthur-Allen has once again been included in the top 10 nominees for the Australian Football Coaches Association (Vic. Inc. ) Mike has been coaching at Ormond since 1983 after crossing over from Canterbury-North Balwyn, and has already notched up 3 flags for the 'Monds - 1985, '87, '88 . Once again 1989 has seen him guide Ormond to the A Grade Grand Final, with an excellent chance to capture a covetted premiership hat-trick. Unlike previous seasons, 1989 sees the 10 nominations are being received in 3 categories : "Aussie", "Youth" and "Senior". The "Aussie" coaches are seen as those who introduce beginning footballers to the game, concentrating on skills and fun to ensure continuing involvement (ie) Vickick coaches. The "Youth" have major objectives of developing player potential, enhance team skills and compete with sound attitudes (ie) U14 to U19 Coaches . The "Senior" coach's role is to optimize the available individual and team potentials whilst exhibiting sound attitudes to the welfare of football in general . (ie) VCFL, VAFA Senior Coaches . Mike McArthur-Allen, one of only 3 senior nominees, along with nominationsfrom other categories, will be invited as guests of honour at a VFL Grand Final Week dinner where the Coach of the Year will be announced . ORM OND ( A) - Mike McA rt hur-Allen : "We had a pretty ordinary first half but excellent second half, where our running ability, mental and physical fitness was good particularly into the wind in the last quarter ." COLLEGIANS (A) - Bruce Ferguson : "We didn't play too badly but they were too good on the day, unfortunately our on ball players were down a little. We would like another crack at them ." DE LA SALLE (B) - Adrian Fisher (De La President) : "We were outplayed . They were too tall and too fast, the better team on the day." THERRY ( B) - Tony Crotty : "There was total involvement and commitment from players all over the ground . All players knew exactly what was required for us to be winners . They performed admirably." OLD HAILEYBURY (C) - Simon Meehan : "I was very happy with teh way the players responded to the challenge after the thrashing of the week before ." ST KILDA CBOC (C) - Peter O'Livieri : "On the day, Haileybury were just too good . We let ourselves down through lack of discipline, while the week's rest did not help us at all . I would however like to thank all CBC players for their efforts throughout the season . Thanks also to Phil & Sue."

Sponsored by Syntex Australi a The Australian Sports Medicine Federation (Victorian Branch) will be hosting the 1989 Grand Final Symposium on September 29th, 1989 The 1988 VFL/ASMF Grand Final Symposium was a huge success and attracted many Victorian and inter-state participants from the sports medicine profession . This year's conference will be held at the Hilton International on the Park and promises to be even better than last year. The theme for the Symposium is "Back on the Ball" and will cover the areas of prevention and rehabilitation of football injuries . The program features many prominent personalities from the football and sports medicine arena, including half time entertainment with the "Coodabeen Champions" in the new Hilton Hotel Comedy Bar . The patrons of the Symposium in 1988 enjoyed themselves immensely so we are anticipating significant participation for the Symposium in 1989 . We hope that the medical personnel from the VAFA accept our offer as the day promises to be an event not to be missed . For further information telephone Judy Butler (03) 688 4219 .

MARCELLIN - Murray B rowne: "I thipk we're playing well at the right end of the season . The boys are hungry for success and I'm sure it will be a tough, close game." COLLEGIANS - Bruce Ferguson : "This will be a very difficult game, they're a good side that has what it takes as they showed in the 1st semi . We've won one and drawn the other against them this season, so we may have the wood on them, although it will come down to wno plays better on the day ." OLD BRIGHTON - Mark Sarau : "I won't predict an outcome, but they haven't beaten us this season and I will be instilling that fact into the team during the week . They are a good side, however were are very aware of their strengths and weaknesses ." DE LA SALLE - Adrian Fisher (De La President) : "Our good form during the year has given us a second chance for promotion by knocking off Brighton this Saturday . We have come from this position before and we will bounce back :" BANYULE - John Simpson : "We are expecting a very close game and I have the utmost respect for the Old Haileybury football team who have been the side to beat all season . There in lies the challenge ." OLD HAILEYBURY - Simon Meehan : "With two finals under our belt and the relief of promotion out of the way, I believe we can put up a vastly improved performance this Saturday ."

MELEES - BEWARE A melee is "Where an incident takes place involving players, pushing, scragging, jumping into packs, throwing each other to the ground or other similar such conduct".
