EDITORIAL by Phil Stevens
Good afternoon football followers . Today another great football season drawsto a close as Therry, De La Salle (Saturday), Ormond and Collegians (Sunday) meet to decide the winner of the ultimate prize in football - a premiership ! Contest involving the two best sides in the competition are always great contests and the games seen should be no exception . As well this weekend we have attempted to "jazz" up you rday, make it a day for the whole family and make it a day that you will all look back upon in the future with pleasant memories . For me personally it has been a huge year and I would like to take the opportunity in this final Editorial to thank many people who have been important to me in this my first year outside the classroom and off the football field . Firstly to the Executive of the VAFA in initially giving me the opportunity to take over this job and then assistin g me in every way possible . In particular David Scott (Chairman), Jim Hawkins (President) and Noel Rundle (Treasurer), each who has taken me under their experienced wings and helped guide me into the tough world of football administration . The biggest bouquet of all must go to my Administrative Assistant, Sue Anderson . Although one eye is green and the other gold, Sue is VAFA through and through and she is as important to our Association as our beautiful oval is to our footballers today . Thanks Sue - your knowledge, experience and support has been marvellous during this difficult period of adjustment in my life . To the clubs, their players and officials, your welcome and day to day co-operation has been refreshing and appreciated, especially in this modern age when individual or club importance is often regarded as the only important thing . A big thank you to the press correspondents who have made the "Amateur Footballer" so popular, the sponsors, the people at Vaughan Printing and everyone else who has assisted in putting this important magazine together. Finally I would like to officially thank my wonde rful wife, Robyn, who has accepted the demands o f my new job ve ry well and been both mother and father to our two beautiful young daughters, Sarah and Joanne, over the past six months . If I have had any success so far in my job, it has largely been due to the suppo rt I have had fro m Robyn at home. As they say at the Olympics "Let the games begin" - may the best side win, may each of you enjoy your day and come back next year to support our wonderful football body. Have a GREAT day . The final showdown between Ormond and Collegians takes play today at Ammo Headqua rters in the most important match of the season . The winner receives the L .A . Adamson Premiership Cup ; the losers? Collegians game against Marcellin started off in a steady drizzle of rain, which did not allow Collegians to display their customary skills. Marcellin were attacking teh ball with great desire, but found trouble penetrating the tight defence led by Schober, Hinchen, Wright and Gailbraith. Collegians kicked 4-2 to Marcellin's 2-1 to lead by 13 points at quarter time. Collegians started the second quarter with plenty of purpose . Marcellin seemed to be playing catch-up football . Captain Matt Getson was inexcusably taken from the ground puzzling most spectators . Collegians youngers Daly and Parkin were very quiet . Collegians added 5-1 to Marcellins 3-4 to now lead by 22 points at the long break. Marcellin were desperate in the third quarter. Joe Amad and Mushy Amad were throwing their weight around (there was plenty to throw), Tony Caffry took the mark of the match with the crowd showing their appreciation . Collegians were struggling to get the ball forward, their forward line of Berzins, Schmidt, Bennett were soundly beaten by the desperate Marcellin defence led by Vice Captain Mick Day . Marcellin outscored Collegians 3-4 to Lions 2-2 . Collegians lead had been whittled away to 14 points at three quarter time. Finals football was what the last quarter was all about Marcellin were giving plenty, the tackling was ferocious, the pressure was enormous . Marcellin were back in the game, to train by seven points . President Ray Walsh was ecstatic, however this was not to last . Collegians finally broke the shackles, running the ball from the back line around the outer wing with little opposition . Wallace, Hibbens, Tre gear were running hot . Collegians had finally got their running game going . Ray Be rz ins nearly kickless for the first three quarters started to show why Ray is a gun player for the Lions . Ray kicked 4-1 in the final 15 minutes to leave the Lions comfortable winners by 28 points in a crowd entertaining display of Amateur Football . Collegians' best on ground was rover Tony Wallace, who was a major contributor for four quarters . Ruck rover Mark Hibbens was instrumental in most forward moves for the Lions, ruckman Chris Pollock was the best big man on the day. Marcellin's best player was Adrian Gallagher who showed great courage and skill . Simon Lennox was another player who played to his full potential . Mick Day was superb in defence repelling many Lion attacks. All in all Collegians had a good work out from Marcellin who surprised many of the Collegians' players with their skill and aggression . 1989 GRAND FINA L Ormond will start warm favourites in Sunday's Grand Final against Collegians . Since 1928 Ormond have won 7 A Grade Premierships ; Collegians 7 A Grade Premierships. Incredibily they have only met once in an A Grade Final . 1937 Collegians 15 .17.107 defeated Ormond 8.20 .68 . Both sides have once strung three premierships in successions. Collegians 1957-1959 ; Ormond 1971-1973 . The last 4 premierships have been won by these sides : Ormond 1985, 1987, 1988 . Collegians 1986 . Will Ormond make it 4 Premierships out of 5 or will Collegians stop Ormond winning 3 premierships in a row . The winning side will have plenty of character, the ability to handle the conditions of the day, the personal and team discipline and the mental and physical toughness. A slice of luck are the qualities which will bring Ormond or Collegians the J .A. Adamson Cup. Looking at the line-ups, Ormond has the edge down the spine. Their versatility at fullback where Hille, David McDonald and Best are all more than capable of coping with Be rzins, Daly and Keith Parsons whose lack of pace could be a liability . Hille must play Berzins from in front, as Berzins is dynamite kicking for goals as his 4-1 in the last quarter proves . The Ormond trio, but especially Best whose skill with hand and foot and use of the ball sets up so many attacking moves are quick, can all mark and are disciplined enough to knock the ball away under pressure . If Ormond have the edge at full back, Collegians might just regain it at centre half forward where Schmidt with his spring and height will worry Mark McDonald . Bennett with Gilmo re should be a ripper. Bennett did not work hard enough last week against Marcellin . With his league experience Bennett must be a focal point of attack . Kahn is a goer and will worry Brown . Across the centre I believe we will witness a contest and a half . Nick Cox on Parkin should be sensational, both are quick, both are good . Parkin, quiet last match, must lift . Clarkson versus Hoyle could be the key to the match . Russell on Tregear both very talented players who play with great courage, what a battle we should witness . Football followers talk about the great Richmond centre line of Clay, Barrott , Bourke. The Ammo's will have two great centre lines . Whatever centreline wins their side will control the match and the game . McCooke, Taylor, Connell versus Scott, Schober, Galbraith . What another great contest . Two Victorian team mates, Taylor who must take one grabbers against ever reliable Schober. I expect Schober to take the honours in the contest. Connell versus Galbraith will be a ripper. Galbraith is having a fantastic year. Connell is reliable . Galbraith is Collegians springboard of attack, initiating many attacks . McCooke versus Sco tt, neither player is brilliant, both are honest . The clash on the Ormond full forward line could be the key to the outcome of the game . Jobling, Schuhkraft, Tobin versus Wright, Hinchen, Williams . What a good colleciton of players . I believe Jobling will start in the forward pocket giving Wright the opportunity of picking him up. Jobling is dangerous as his 4 goals in the second semi proved . Wright is in top form . He completely dominated the resting Marcellin on-ball players last week, and has had a great final series . Schuhkraft goaless in the second semi will lift for his clash with Collegians Captain Stuart Hinchen . If Hinchen can keep Schuhkraft to a low score the odds will swing in Collegians' way. Tobin versus Williams is another interesting clash . Tobin, quiet of late, must fire . Williams is a steady player without being spectacular. The clash between the on-ball players of both sides is bound to be the real highlight of the match . Paul McDonald versus Chris Pollock . Phil Kingston versus Mark Hibbens. Paul Cox versus Tony Wallace . All 6 players are poven amateur final players . Either sides will have an advantage in the skill or experience area. McDonald is Ormond thru and thru, rarely beaten . Paul must counter Chris Pollock around the ground . Pollock was dangerous when resting last Sunday. Kingston will start on the ball to give the Ormond side muscle in the centre. Phil has got the Rhy Jones Head (everyone wants a piece of it) . His opponent, Mark Hibbens, helped set Collegians victory up last week and he must not be given the free rein the Marcellin players gave Mark . Paul Cox clash with Tony Wallace will ensure what side will win, both are great players, both have enormous courage, both are skilful, both are team players, both are hard but fair . What more can I say? Let the best man win . It all adds up to one hell of a final . Great individual duels, fierce competition, two best teams in Amateurs . Will Collegians tire after their physical clash with Marcellin? Will Ormond go off the boil after their rest? I think not . I expect Ormond to win . They are awesome in the finals, and will go in today's clash with a decided physcological advantage after beating Collegians in the second semi by 24 points . Ormond's qualities of team and personal discipline with greater team commitment, in addition to the individual brilliance that exists in the side, will ensure the clubs 8th A Section premiership . Let's all enjoy a great football day.

GRAND FINA L De La Salle completely outplayed Old Brighton to storm into the B Grade GF. What had been a record breaking season for the Tonners ended on a sour note as De La beat them in almost every position on the ground . As the Therry boys described it, "It was a real schlacking! " Peter G reen set the pattern for the day with a brilliant first quarter burst of eight goals and with De La evelen majors up at quarter time, it was just a matter of how far . Mick Knuppel and Kevin Mullins were unbeatable at half back while Carl Anderson and Craig Wright ran rings around their opponents . With Brighton's largest losing margin being only four and half goals all year, it is hard to understand what went wrong on Saturday. All credit however must go to Bernie Dunn and his players, who before this game looked shakey for the first time this year. Several league Grand Finalists of recent years have felt similar to the Brighton Boys, although this is a cold consolation . With the Therry Boys present last Saturday, they must be wondering if De La could possibly shatter their dream in the same uncompromising terms as they did Brighton's . Grand Finals are completely different games Oust ask Banyule and Old Mentonians) and with "Wriggles " unfortunately having to sit this game out, Therry may have had their Glory for this year or have th e Tony Cro tty has moulded the Therryites into a disciplined, hard tackling unit . Ryan and Matton love it when the going gets tough and Biddies doesn't mind having a "good dip" . Chris Bye may be having his "Swan Song" today and is determined to go out on a high . However, after seeing the destructive nature of De La last Saturday, Tony's boys will have to be on their toes form the first bounce . Perhaps the weather will take the pace off De La (at the time of writing this article rain was forecast) or windy conditions may unsettle them . Whatever the conditions, this should be a cracker-jack game and will no doubt be played in the true amateur spirit by two clubs which duly :;eserve promotion for their efforts this year. Good luck to all players and the coaches . We predict a draw!

From the first bounce a totally committed Old Haileybu ry side were ready to answer any challenge from Banyule to pecome Premiers in C Section for 1989 . The Bloods comprehensively won 23 .10.148 to 12 .11 .83 to win their first senior flag in many years . The first quarter saw Old Haileybu ry kicking to the southern end . Taking the initiative early was most important . Newcomer, Mathew Armst rong, set his side alight with some quick possessions which gave the Bloods first use of the ball and an early lead . Quarter time scores of 5.4 .34 to Banyule 2 .1 .13 indicated a very lethargic start by the Bears, one they never really got over. Young Wayne Phillips was prominent through out the term, capping off the quarter with an excellent goal . Big John Bingham at centre half back was proving impassable while for the Bears Coulson and Leigh Holt kept them in touch though it was apparent by quarter time that Banyule were in trouble. The second term saw Old Haileybu ry kick six goals to four, the half time scores bieng 11 .9 .75 to 6.7.43 . Old Haileybu ry 's running players had come into the game . Simon Meehan, Wayne Phillips and Wayne Smith were taking control . Terry Lyell tagging Leigh Holt had put him out of business, very important as Leigh was Banyule's instigator in the second semi final . For Banyule, Sutterby and Gilham kept pushing the ball forward only to see Old Haileybu ry's backline rebound the ball away from the injury riddled Tony Weston and Ma rtin Legge. At half time most considered Old Haileybu ry looked too strong, holding a 5 goal lead and kicking with the wind in the chammpionship third quarter . To the credit of all Banyule players they pegged away at the Bloods . Big Dave Williams winning the tape outs in the centre gave Coulson, Gibson and Lusk first use of the ball, resulting in two quick goals . Halfway through the term Banyule, although being apparently outplayed, had actually placed themselves in a position of only being three goals down and coming home with the breeze . Unfortunately their revival was short lived and the Bloods replied with three quick goals late in the term to have a stranglehold on the game. Again Phillips and Armst rong collected many possession across the centre line, and the fading legs of the Banyule players was all too obvious . The final quarter was all Old Haileybu ry, kicking goals with tremendous confidence . Banyule had no answers, Ladd, Gill and Sanders continued to fight it out, but the game became quite tame as the Bloods drew away to take the flag in style. It's interesting to note that the best players for Banyule in the second semi found it hard to get into the game, while the gun players for Old Haileybu ry who were kept quiet at Sandringham starred in the game that mattered most . I was most impressed with young Wayne Phillips. His recovery and pace are exceptional . He was best on ground for mine . Big John Bingham played a faultless game at centre half back . Ter ry Lyell took Holt out of the game and picked up many crucial kicks . Gordon McKenzie and Mathew Armst ro ng both first up really gave the Bloods that extra bite around the packs . Captain Darre n Seccull was strong all day in the ruck, and Simon Meehan showed all his class in playing a great game . David Connell (3 goals), Andrew Walden (4 goals), West Byrnes, Chris McKenzie and Glen Tanner all contributed to a fine team effort . For Banyule the Grand Final came two weeks too late . Lacking manpower, probably playing a couple of injured players and receiving injuries during the game didn't help. Jason Fraumano was also unable to play which really unsettled their backline . I gave them plenty of credit, they fought it out right to the end, after the game they gave no excuses, the better side won on the day . Best for Banyule were Coulson, a strong player who gave plenty of opportunity to his forwards . Big Dave Williams obviously playing under stress, gave his club plenty of drive from the centre, Sanders I believe held his own at full back, Leigh Holt, Gill and Craig had played serviceable games . All in all both clubs must be congratulated on a fine year and the way they battled out the final series . No much between them, but Old Haileybu ry's overall height, a combination of good running players and some very talented flankers gave them the C Grade flag . Well done to OLD HAILEYBURY - PREMIERS 1989 .

REVIEW OF UNDER 19 GAMES PLAYED 16 .9.1989 SECTION 1 - PRELIMINARY FINAL Old Paradians Green started the better against Old Xaverians and by quarter time had run to a six point lead . with a big second quarter effort the Paradians built their lead to fourteen points at half time . Once again the third quarter proved to be the match winning one as the Old Xaverians added six goals six behinds while holding Old Paradians to two goals two behinds . This decisive quarter of football by Old Xaverians meant they led by fourteen points at the final change . The last quarter proved to be an anticlimax as neither side was able to kick a goal . The Paradians whittled away their more frequent opportunities with five minor scores while the Old Xaverians only added two minor scores and thus they ran out winners by nine points . Hall, with five goals, proved to be the match winner for Old Xaverians who once again were well served by their consistent quartet King, Dillon and the Brothers Dalton . Other good contributors for the Red and Blacks included Stocks and Wilson . For Old Paradians the much improved Paul Robertson did best along with Ter ry Canavan, Peter Brabender and first year members of their side, Digney, Flynn and Robe rts who each gave notice of better performances in 1990 . SECTION 2 - GRAND FINA L Old Scotch proved my early season judgment sound when they won the premiership by defeating St Bernards by the wide margin of sixty eight points. For Scotch the pennant is their Club's third in Under 19 football (1952 and 1984 were the others) and for St Bernards their Grand Final disappointment must be tinged with satisfaction of having earned their Grand Final appearance after finishing fourth at the end of the minor round . Old Scotch built a five goal lead in the first quarter and really had the game won at half time when they led by fifty four points . By three quarter time Scotch had increased their lead to sixty three points which the y stretched to sixty eight points at the final siren after a low scoring four quarter. As I predicted "Gus" Taylor did have a plan to shut out the St Bernards' prime movers who had brought victory to their side over the two previous finals. More importantly the Scotch players made their Coach's planning a success . Of the St Bernards' l stars only ruckmen McGown and Horn were in their bests players against Scotch . Conversely many of the best players for Old Scotch were predictable. Jamie Sinclair again led his side by example and top forward Millington (6 goals), Cowper and Gibbs did well . Congratulations to Old Scotch on a great season and well done St Bernards for your effort in reaching the Grand Final . SECTION 3 - PRELIMINARY FINAL (REPLAY) Like many previous replays this game proved to be a disappointment after the excitement of the tie . As in their previous game Mazenod took the lead early over Hampton Rovers and unlike the previus week they did not surrender it at any stage . In fact the closest the Rovers came to the Mazenod score was twenty three points at half time. Even though Mazenod led by twenty six points at three quarter time very few would have predicted the final outcome . By adding eight goals to two in the final quarter Mazenod powered to a sixty point victory . Good players for Mazenod : Riley, Ward and Tetley between them scored more than did the Hampton Rovers side and this factor coupled with the consistently good play of McLean and Biviano must give the side renewed high for a Grand Final victory . For Hampton Rovers : G re ig and Hender again did well as did Blaskett and Hobson . However in the final analysis Mazenod were just too good on the day.
player this season . The running players for Old Xaverians, Andrew Dillon, David King and Best and Fairest Winner Dalton will again cause difficulties to De La Salle but I suspect the big ground plus the effects of last week's game could limit their effectiveness especially during the last quarter . For De La Salle I expect their consistently good players jackson, Hegan, Watts, P. Brasher and Kruger to again provide the drive necessary to win the side its second successive premiership and maybe the first of three flags today. UNDER 19 SECTION 3 - GRAND FINA L old Trinity and Maz enod, the two best sides over the season meet today at Pitcher Park to decide the premiership. It will be their fifth meeting this season and the result will break the nexus as each club has won two matches against the other. The Second Semi Final on S eptember 2, which was their most recent clash, resulted in a convincing thirty eight pint victory by Old Trinity . Today Trinity will be looking to Phillips for another big effort either in the ruck or at centre half forward . Captain Harvey has been an inspiration to Trinity all season while Papas has been a consistent contributor (he earned votes in five games) . Other players whom Mazenod must quieten include Davy, Bingenham, Simms, Lobb and Banfield who each contributed to their Semi Final victory . Trinity's three week lay off may take the edge of their match fitness and as Mazenod has built an early lead in the each of their three finals I suspect Trinity wil have to come from behind to win (if indeed they are to do so) . Another factor in Mazenod's favour is the ability of Riley their principal goalkicker. He can certainly win the ball but may (as in the drawn final) spray his kicks . Nevertheless a focal point is essential in attack and when judged on the available data no such capable forward plays for Old Trinity. I can see pressure being placed on Trinity defenders as the Mazenod runners like Signal, Principe, McLean and Ward take advantage of Tetley's strength in packs to run the ball forward to Riley before the Trinity ruckmen can drop back to block his run to the ball . After due consideration I believe Mazenod will win today and thus take premierships honours in their first Under 19 season as well as making the third flag for their Club in its initial VAFA season . Again a Grand Final thanks to Joan Ahern, my typist, Bill Holland my ever tolerant printer at Vaughan Pri nting and to you, my myriad of readers, because without your interest my sponsor Kodak would quickly withdraw my retainer . I now place my writing in recess with the hope the Editor will summon me back to the pages of the Amateur Football come April 1990.
- PREVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED - SEPTEMBER 23, 1989 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 - GRAND FINAL The two beste sides in the section this season and last season, De La Salle Blue and Old Xaverians, meet at Elsternwick Park at the early hour of 9am . De La Salle deserve to start premiership favourites as they have won the three games played between these two sides this season with their forty point Second Semi Final victory being the most recent . In that game the Xaverian defensce had no answer to the combined goalkicking talents of R . Brasher and Jackson who nearly outscored their opposition themselves as well as the scoring ability of Curran and Fiume . With the wide spaces at Elsternwick Park available for quick ball movement I cannot see the Old Xaverians keeping each of these four players from kicking multiple goals today. The Xaverian forwards, of whom Hall did best last week, will be pitted against the best defence in the competition and so I have doubts that the Xaverians will be able to kick enough goals to win . From my experience at Elsternwick Park the winning side invariably has a focal point in its forward line. I doubt that the Xaverians have any such 8 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Four'n Twenty Pies VAFA Club Championship and Police Award (U19 Most Disciplined Team ) As published last week MAZENOD won the 'Four'n Twenty Club Championship Award" gaining a total of 96 points for the season (48 senior points ; 34 reserves points ; 14 under 19 points) Lack of available space this week prohibits the publication of all clubs, their points and the breakdown of the points but a full sheet will be presented at the Annual General Meeting in the Annual Report . *~*** Each week the umpire who officials at an Under-19 match awards a score from 0 to 10 and bases this score on each participating club's standard of discipline displayed on that particular day . If a club is reported for being involved in a melee this club's score has automatically plummetted but has not always automatically been zero - it has depended on the club's involvement in the melee . This year's Police Award winner is DE LA SALLE GOLD (8.6) . Runners-up were Aquinas (8.2) and MHSOB (8.0) . Congratulations to these three clubs.
Persona lity Par s 150 GAMES AND PROMOTION Congratulations to Tony Park who played his 150th match for St Andrews Coburg in the winning preliminary final team at Harry Trott Oval on 2nd September. "Perky", who for years has carried the big man department, was appointed senior vice-captain, a position he has responded to with many excellent performances in a consistent season . "Parky" has tasted premiership success with the reserves team 1980 and we all hope this will be repeated in 1989.

Sad to see anyone get inju re d in a game of footy, let alone an umpire in the first minute of a Pre limina ry Final . Poor G re g "my g in, my leg, my back, my fro nt, my ankle, my arm hurts" Hardiman got accidentally ro mark and was down for the count . Enter this week's "Spo rt sman of the Week" collected at the 36 second - Steve "I slept like a log on Sunday night" Clinch who having just run a full game in the seconds proceeded to run another full game in the seniors . Well done Steve - those of us who were there really admi re d your courage and commitment . *** A WORD FROM `LIBERTY ' "With the '89 season drawing to a close, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of all umpires in our association, to congratulate those clubs who have either won their premierships or who have won promotion to a higher grade. To all clubs, we extent our appreciation for the assistance extended to us and making our jobs all that more enjoyable. We would like to thank Brian Woodhead and his team of advisors and observers, for getting us onto the field each week so well prepared both physically and mentally. Our appreciation also goes to Phil Stevens and Sue for their support and giving us the feeling that nothing was too much trouble . Finally to all our umpires . I hope you all achieved your own personal goals . If not, reset them for next year. To those running this weekend, run well . Again, thank you all for your support and we will see your again in 1990 ." Robert Bel l * * * President VAFAUA THE SCRIBES HAVE THEIR SAY: • Rusty : Well another season's finished Mike, and although I like finals, I must admit that I'm looking forward to a rest . • Mike : I understand a few sides would like to see you rest in the same way as Ron "the lip" Lippold and Ken "my hair's not thin - just well spaced" Coughlin have, through reti re ment . • Rusty : Oh no, I'll be back to watch the goalies do their weekly run th ro ugh (singular) . By the way, is there any truth to the rumour that Kevin "Roof" Tyler has been approached by Essendon District Umpires' Association to captain/coach their goal umpi re tunnelball team? • Mike : That's the sort of misinformed comment I expect from a field umpire. Don't worry you'll grow out of it - it's all part of the "maturation" process . But let's talk about the column . • Rusty : I thought that our best "scoop" story was the "Knickers Scandal". You know that John "His pants for Her" Natoli and Sharon "Au Natu re l" Alger ran together again last weekend - except that this time John's wife accompanied him to the changerooms!! ! • Mike: I liked the serialised stories : Doug "the Wande re r" Wiggans and his "TRUMP" ( TRavelling UMPi re) Report ; the continuing (???) mic ro wave saga featuring Peter and Betty Wiseman ; and the creation of the perfect football family with Peter "SONAG", Nancy "MOPAWOG" and George "the Guru" McTaggart . • Rusty : Yeah, I liked the fact that we weren't afraid to name names : Steve "Technicolour" McCarthy; Richie "I was R .S: ' Simon; Glen "Met ro Gold Pass" McKeeman; Peter "Sweetie" Harri s; Wayne "the A ro user" Henry ; Graeme "Nu reyev" Simpson ; Larrisa "the Kisser" and of course "Fabulous" Phil . • Mike : There are plenty of White Whackas out there. Mind you, it will take something to beat Gary "the Flounder" Clancy. He's the VAFAUA's answer to "Elvis the Pelvis" ? • Rusty : What about next year Mike? I guess we've made too many enemies to let anyone else write the column . Imagine what they would say about us?? By the way, is it true that your "Happy Hammond" coat was supplied by Peter "Rags" Keogh's boutique?? • Mike : I'll ignore that last remark . Actually I've been amazed at how many umpires like to dob in their mates - perhaps what people say about umpires is true . Incidentally, I've told everyone that you're the one with the moustache. • Mike/Rusty : Thanks to all umps for getting into the spirit of this column and to Phil and Sue for getting things printed . Happy Christmas, Dougle, wherever you might be .

STATISTICALLY SPEAKIN G (Phil Stevens talks with Wal B right) Phil : Congratulations Wal on your selections - Collegians, De La Salle but you missed out on Banyule. Wal : I based my selection "Stevo" on the fact that they'd only won 2 previous flags 1963 (D-Sec) and 1969 (D-Sec) before Saturday and the fact that you had taught them most of their football - boy my head still : After Saturday night I wished I'd never ever had anything to do with Haileybury .Phil hurst!! Seriously though, Haiteybu ry were g re at and congratulations to Kenny Allison, Simon Meeha n and the players on a top job. Also to John Simpson from Banyule who is a fine coach and a g reat guy as well, who accepted defeat positively and was full of praise for his boys . Phil: Well Old B ri ghton didn't measu re up B righty? Wal : Very disappointing Phil . De La's first quarter of 11 goals won the game and this wasn't with the aid of any breeze - it really was a cross breeze . Peter Green's 6 goals in the first 20 minutes and 8 by quarter time was a super effort . Phil: Eight by qua rter time. How many did he finish with ? Wal : He got his 9th and 10th in the second quarter, his 11th five minutes into the third quarter and that was it in fact, he ended up on the wing . Phil : So I guess you're selecting De La now Bri ghty? Wal: I'm sticking with Therry although with Wrigglesworth out they could struggle against Greene's replacement Ronchi who dominated on Saturday. What about you Phil ? Phil : Who'd take any notice of me - I said Geelong wouldn't win the flag till 1995 and now it looks like it it's in bag this year. Phil : What about the big Sunday A-section game? Wal: Statistically speaking, Ormond 37 wins are well ahead of Collegians 18 wins in head-to-head contests with 2 tied . In 1985 Ormond won the flag, then Collegians in '86, then Ormond again in '87 and '88 so they are the A-section heavyweights of the eighties . Ormond have won 13 out of the last 14 they've played (round 15 loss to Collegians) . Interestingly Phil, Collegians have won 6 games this year by less than 3 goals plus a tie against Marcel!in . Phil : Well, I reckon that's a sign of stre ngth . Wal : Me too. Phil : So you selecting Collegians? Wal : I don't think I can - Ormond's forward line have kicked 52 points more than any other side this year and their backline is superb. What about you "Stevo"? Phil: Ormond, because Mike McArthur-Allen played with South Warmamboo l like me and . . . Wal : Stop! Stop! I know friends are much more important than everything else! Phil : Finally Wal, knowing you' re a cri cket stats man too, do you know who was the only English captain never to have scored a Test match run or taken a Test match catch? Wal : Mmm, I'll have to look that one up. Phil : Don't bother - it was Captain Cook . Wal : Stevo, you've been overworked, take a break . Phil : I will - see you next season .

Due to recent queries from umpires about club personnel inside the boundary and where they should stand the VAFA Executive has asked me to inform clubs of the following :
Only designated officials (7 in number) to be inside the fence, and if not seated to be standing against the fence : At Elsternwick Park a line is marked in front of each coach's box over which club staff should not move during play. Where coaches' boxes are provided they are to be used . Umpires have enough to do, so DUTY OFFICERS have been asked to police this requirement . ~* * VAFA stalwart Tony O'Callaghan and his lovely wife Ma ry will certainly know they've had a day at the footba!l on Saturday, as they have a son playing in each of De La Salle's grand final series - Patrick kicked "the dew off the grass" with the Under 19s at 9am, followed by Matthew in the "two's" and then John in the "one that really matters" . It's a shame "Ocka" doesn't drink as he probably would enjoy a couple on Saturday night!! ! **~ Two sets of lost keys were handed in to me during and after last weekend's matches - call me on 531 5452 . ~c ,t *

National Mutual - for your Financial Planning ! By crickey . . . By jingo . . . By golly . . . Gee whiz . . . What a year! (Apologies to Mike Gibson ) It certainly has been a year . . . both on and off thefield . On the field, the Australian Amateur Team this season was the first team ever to reach the Final of the NFL Divison 2 Carnival . . . the VAFA Under 19 side was runnersup to the VCFL in the Victorian Under 19 Vic Health Championships held at VFL Park late June . . . In A Section Ormond's a grand finalist again . . . what a team . . . what a coach . . . what a club ! Off the field, there's been plenty happening too! Peter French accepted the Chief Executive job at Vic Sport . . . 'Fabulous' Phil Stevens has taken over the VAFA General Manager's chair and is certainly making his mark . . . of course with great assistance from 'Super' Sue Anderson in the VAFA office . . . and 'Big Jim', the VAFA's hard-working President will step down after his 3 year term . Jim Hawkins will certainly leave the VAFA in great shape and his strong leadership and drive has set the standard for all to follow . '89 was a big year for VAFA Marketing and this area came under the wing of VAFA executive member 'Big' Bob Welch . Bob's team included Tony O'Callaghan who runs the VAFA's property division . . . a most important revenue generator for the VAFA . (By the way, Tony hasn't been too well lately - I'm sure a De La Premiership on Saturday will help.) . , . 'Turn Coat' Ross Booth heads our media section . . . Ian `Munners' Mun ro spends an enormous amount of time with special events (Big V and Gold Pass Clubs) . . . and extras on Bob's committee who put a lot of time and effort into ensuring successful and profitable VAFA marketing programmes . Which brings me to our final 'wrap-up' for '89 . . . our sponsors . . . from the very major . . . to the minor . . the VAFA thanks you for your generous support . Rhonda Galbally, Chief Executive Officer, Adrian Nye, Manager Assessment & Evaluation and Campbell Rose, Project Officer, and VHPF board members Ron Casey, David Parkin and Russell Hopper, have been great supporters of VAFA family football and the $50,000 sponsorship enabled the VAFA for the first time ever to employ a part-time Promotions Officer, G reg Paine, to conduct clinics, visit schools and clubs . . . and generally promote the 'Amateur' code . . . and dental care . It's been a great success and hope this arrangement continues for many years to come . Thanks also to Australian Dental Association (Vic Division) President, Neil Hewson for his contribution . THE
Beaurepaires The best down under. AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989
Congratulations on yet another successful season! National Mutual has enjoyed being a part of it! Throughout the season I have written about some of the many products and services the National Group of Companies can offer officials, players and supporters alike . But perhaps now is a good time to retap on some of those. Our long experience - 120 years - in the life insurance business enables us to provide professional management of funds, be it superannuation or investment . From those early days we have expanded our operations to cover almost every aspect of financial planning, including banking, trustee services and investment, as well as a range of fire and general products. We are now the recognised market leaders in rollovers with three products - SuperGuard, SuperGuard Plus and SuperGuard II - to suit the needs of anyone retiring or leaving the workforce with a lump sum payment . Whatever your investment strategies, one of these products is bound to suit your needs . National Mutual has also added two new products to the "bond" range - Guaranteed Investment Bond (no entry fees and your money, including your interest is fully guaranteed), and the Variable Income Bond (which gives you income when you need it) to join the already successful Personal Investment Bond (which offers a choice of investment portfolios) . And there's our range of traditional life products - savings plans, tax free after 10 years, mortgage cancellation, enabling you to save thousands of dollars in interest by paying off your mortgage sooner than you would have expected, major trauma, the special benefit that you can add to a life policy to give you financial support if you suffer a heart attack, cancer or paraplegia and income protection, offering you a weekly benefit if you are unable towork because of illness or accident . And don't forget personal superannuation! Recently announced changes by the Treasurer, to take affect from 1 July next year, making funding your own retirement an even more attractive proposition, with greater tax deductions, and better end benefits. With assets of over $24 billion worldwide, you know that when you deal with National Mutual, you're dealing with an organisation that can offer security and professional advice . For further information, call your National Mutual agent .

ITVhat the Coaches Said BANYULE (C Runners-up) - John Simpson : "Congratulations to Old Haileybury, they played ver well and the best side won playing a fairly awesome brand of football . Nothing went right for us and we played our worst football for the season . We had some very nervous players before the match and didn't get a good start - you must get a good start in Amateur football ." OLD HAILEYBURY (C-P re miers) - Simon Meehan : "With the addition of seven U19 players our legs, especially in the second half, were superior to Banyule's . Unlike the game at Sandringham when we had several top players down on form, this week it was Banyule's turn . I have no doubt that the two sides deserve their promotion as their performances throughout the year indicated ." MARCELLIN (A) - Murray B rown : "We played catch-up football all day and were unable to bridge the gap . I thought we gave 100% for the whole year and was proud to coach the Marcellin football club" . Murray has very tactfully predicted a "draw" in this week's Grand Final . COLLEGIANS (A) - Bruce Ferguson : "It was a very tough game as we knew it would be . Marcellin played the game very well and there was not much in it all day . Our forwards finished it off for us in the last 10-15 minutes. OLD BRIGHTON (B) - Mark Sarau : They got the jump on us and that was it . The first 15-20 minutes of th e game told the tale. It was a very disappointing end to the Club's most successful season ever. De La played very well and deserved to win, they beat us around the packs, got the ball out of the centre and easy goals resulted . Depth is a problem at our club that we must try and overcome ." DE LA SALLE ( B) - Bernie Dunn "A combination of our early aggression and the indiscretions on behalf of Old Brighton enabled us to kick 11 goals in the first quarter. This made it very difficult for Old Brighton to get into the game after quarter time ."
What the Coach es Say ORMOND (A) - Mike McArt hur-Allen : "I think we'll win, but it will be a tough game in that we are going for an important historical event (3 flags in a row) . Our greater fitness and discipline will see us through" COLLEGIANS (A) - Bruce Ferguson : It is going to be a very difficult game . Ormond has been the best side this season as they have shown by finishing on top of the ladder . We played reasonably well in the secondsemi so if we keep the pressure on them all day we might get away with it ." THERRY ( B) - Tony C rotty : "We have respect for the capabilities of the opposition but 'A' Grade football starts for us this week . DE LA SALLE ( B) - Bernie Dunn : "We'll have to be a lot more aggressive than the 2nd semi to win . They're obviously a very capable team on a good winning run so we'll have to win the hard ball which we failed to do two weeks ago . The recent pattern in amateur footy has seen the second semi loser win the Grand Final, likewise I think the extra match has helped us get back on track ."

That is 'An audible obscenity will result in the player being automatically ordered from the field for 15 minutes of playing time. If a second offence occurs or if one of the umpires is the subject of the obscenity, the player will be reported and automatically sent off for 15 minutes of playing time' : 16

5 YEARS AGO - 1984 De La Salle outclassed Ormond to win its second successive "A" Section Premiershp and make it 5 in 8 years. Ormond's shocking inaccuracy, 3.14 at half time, did not help its chances but De La wre far too good . Ormond scored only 5 behinds in the first term to trail De La by 23 points, and made no ground in the second term . Steady rain took over in the third term and did little to detract from De La's superiority. Final scores were 11 .14 to 6.19 . Beset were P Szerkaski, M . Greene, G . Connolly, T Cooke, F. Leonard, D. Harrington (De la) and G . Ritchie, P Mehrten, R . Barnes, R . Morris, G . Russell, M . Vane (Ormond) . Shane Murphy kicked 4 goals for De La . Umpires were Brian Goodman, John Horwood . Beset were David Burgin, Paul Smith, Damien Sullivan, Greg Wood, John O'Connell, Maurice Sullivan (St Bs) and McDonnell, Sharp, Donoghue, David, Gittos, Morcom (Ivanhoe) . Colin Wills was his co-umpire while David Hindle (game 201) and Ben Croxford umpired "C" Section Grand Final . De La obeyed coach Sheehy's instructions to "run at the ball" and "put your body in" and powered their way to a 17.15 to 12 .10 victory against University Blues. Teams were as follows from the backline : THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1989

Kew were in command all day and their small men dominated the game. Best were Toogood, Smith, Blay (5 goals), Jackomes, Fletcher, O'Farrell . Terry Hayes was the toast of Kew with a premiership in his first year as coach as his tactics brought new enthusiasm and discipline to Kew. 15 YEARS AGO - 1974 University Blacks won the "A" Section premiership in a game marred by strong winds and a couple of heavy rain squalls . Blacks kicked 6.4 in a brilliant first quarter and went on to a 20 point lead at half time when Ormond kicked only 2 .6 for that term . The third quarter was tight and 14 points was between the teams at the last change. The defences stood firm with Blacks kicking 1 .1 to Ormond's 0.4. Best were : Uni Blacks A . Costello, King, Webster, Fisher, Perrett, A . Johnstone . Ormond : I . Cameron, Corben, Hardham, Bourne, Jenkins, Buckley . Goals : Uni Blacks : I . Cordner 3, Moffatt 3, Perrett 2, A . Monash Blues : Griffiths, Galbraith, Halliday, Skinner, Gray, Hopkins. 20 YEARS AGO - 1969 In a tight game in which the lead changed many times Coburg finally won 13 .17.95 to Ormond' s 31

Old Xaverians were having trouble finding a suitable oval but finally settled to play at the school . The season started on April 29th . Ron Bywater went on to play with South Melbourne and was runner-up in the 1946 Brownlow. Myer on top in "D" had to forfeit their right to play in the finals when it was discovered that a member of the team was ineligible for selection as he had failed to appear before the Tribunal of another body some eight years ago . Sam Loxton headed Under-19 goalkickers with 80 goals. Sam was later a St Kilda star and also, as an all rounder, a member of Don Bradman's famous 1948 test team . University Blacks were far too strong in the air for Ormond and won the "A" Section premiership 15.18 to 10 .8. It was the second of six in succession for Uni Blacks, 1938-39-46-47-48-49 (no play 1940-45 due to WWII), and in 1939, 47 and 49 Ormond were runners-up . Personality Pars WELL DONE FREAKSHOW ! Congratulations last week (9/9) to Johnny 'F re akshow' Buckley on playing 50 games for De La Salle. "The Freak" started in 1986 and before long impressed all and sundry with his uncanny skills . He was a regular lsts player last year but unfortunately didn't receive his pre-season letter until July this year. A possible late inclusion this week for the 1sts, Johnny certainly wouldn't be out of his league. Hope you can chalk up at least another 50 John . 150 TO ORMOND'S PHILIP KINGSTON Congratulations to Philip Kingston who plays his 150th game for Ormond in the Grand Final today . After playing for Old Haileybury Juniors, Phil followed in the footsteps of his father, Jack, (past Captain and President of Ormond) to Ormond . He has since become a very popular and well respected player at Ormond . Kingo's achievements at Ormond have been many and include being a member of the 1985, 1987 and 1988 Premiership sides . In 1988 he was named captain of the Victorian side and after success in that Carnival had the honour of being named 1988 AllAustralian Captain . In 1989 he has followed this up with again being selected in both the Victorian (vicecaptain) and All-Australian Amateur sides . Phil's sporting talents are not only limited to the football field, as in the summer he is a top wicket keeper for South Melbourne in the District Cricket ranks . In addition to this, he somehow also finds time to run his very successful landscape garden business. Well done Kingo on reaching your 150th and let's hope it turns out to be another memorable day in your career.
