ar Good afternoon football followers . Welcome back to alI readers of The Amateur Footballer" to what promises to be another great season of Amateur football, and as we approach the Association's Centenary (1892-1992) the competition is certainly constantly changing with the times, improving and continuing to provide quality footall at the lowest possible cost to member clubs . Changes! There certainly have been many! Avid readers will even notice today the change in appearance of the "Amateur Footballer" - new covers and subtle alterations to layout and style add I hope something better and different for readers . The appointment of another full-time member of the VAFA administration has certainly been a progressive change . The appointmentof 4 timesin a rowOrmond premiership coach Mike McArthur-Allen hasallowed the previously paid part-time positionsof Promotionsand Development ; Sponsorship and Tribunal Co-ordinationto beconsoliclated in this full-time appointment and controlled centrally from Elsternwick Park. A measure of the success of Mike's appointment isthat sponsorship is well-up on thistime!ast year, and in these difficult economictimes this success is something to be proud of . It is essential that we keep sponsorship atthe same level asthe previous year or preferably higher because if it isn't, the loss of revenue must be borne by all clubs in the form of increased affiliation fees . It is estimated that without gathering any sponsorship each club would have to find from between $3000 and $5000 extra to continue as a member club of the VAFA . Another interesting change has been the establishment of an elite premier division in under 19 footba!l with the remaining teams grouped together according to geographical location of teams - to be known as Under 19 North and South . A similar geographical grouping has taken place in G section this year with G Section North and G Section South replacing the previous G and H sections . ° Apart from the individual aspirations of all clubs to reach the grand final of this particular section and thus gain promotion to a higher section for 1992, a highlight of 1991 will be the VAFA's participation in the Amateur Carnival this yearto be held in sunny Perth in June . This particular carnival is held everythird year between the fourAustralian amateur states - Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and this year's host state Western Australia . Mike McArthurAllen has been appointed coach of this team and players will be certainly striving from the first bouncethis weekend to impress and stake a claim for inclusion in the team for this prestigious 10 day trip to Western Australia . To all the new clubs a huge welcome is extended and it is hoped thatthe potential each club managed to convey to the New Clubs Committee is transferred into sound on-field performance . Similarly to clubs who have survived off-season's of turmoil and planning congratulations on getting to the starting post, and it is hoped that the level of effort each club has put in matches the level of 1991 success gained . Best wishes to all clubs and supporters and it is hoped that success comes to those who deserve it most and defeats are accepted with great sportsmanship and used as motivation to improve the following week . I commend the VAFA Executive for its support to the Administration during the off season and congratulate my two off-siders Mike McArthur-Allen (Executive Officer) and Sue Anderson (Administrative Assistant) for their untirin g efforts to get this season up and away. Have a great day of football . Phil Stevens VAFA General Manage r

A SECTION PREVIEW by Phil Stevens and Mike McArthur-Allen ound 1 brings some great Amateur games to launch the 1991 season. The volatile nature of VAFA football ,see last year's successful sides quickly tumble and poor performers from the previous season can rise dramatically ey recruit well . It makes tipping using last year's form a risky business . But that's the great appea of Amateur ;y - uncertainty and surprises . 'he big game on the Saturday at Elsternwick park sees MARCELLIN opposed to COLLEGIANS. Marcellin ,e finished 3rd for the past 2 seasons and are yet to play off in an A Section Grand Final . No doubt, that is the lie's aim in 1991 - to create Club history. At times last year they were very impressive with excellent young ~ers like Chun and Gross. They will have matured a bit and have appointed Neil Le Lievre to take over as iior Coach from Mick Petrie . Le Lievre brings a wealth of experience to the role having previously coached rcellin 3 seasons ago after a stint at De La Salle which included an A Grade flag . Collegians have also had Daching change - the long serving Bruce Ferguson has gone to Parkside and been replaced by ex-Fitzroy /er Leigh Carlson . Some stories suggest Collegians have lost a number of very good players - Ben Ingleton, braith, Hibbins, are 3 . We would not be surprised if the Eagles take the points narrowly. " HERRY with a very impressive debut in the top section last year will be keen to make their presence really Theytake on SCOTCH who have also made a coaching change . Laurie Aghan has been replaced by Peter rvren who has been a well respected Scotch and State player for some time . Scotch have been an enigma he past decade. Talent has been evident when you consider their outstanding State reps but they have not ted it together. With excellent off-field support Therry, under Coach Tony C rott y, have learnt quickly and we eve especially at home will be too cohesive for Scotch . ) NI BLUES after promising so much early in the season last yearfell away badly and narrowly avoided relegation . y host DE LA SALLE on the big Uni oval and will find De La with great depth . This could be a terrific contes t
PRESS C'ORRESPONID"'IEN"IS' NOTICE All A to F and Under 19 home teams must phone Nancy McTaggart (528 3319/528 2471) before 5p m each Saturday afternoon with final scores only . All A and B section home teams must then phone Norm Nugent (467 2857) before 5pm each Saturday afternoon with both teams goalkickers and best players for the day. All G section and Reserve section home teams must phone Ron H ally (379 8171) before 3p m each Saturday afternoon with final scores only. Black lists will be published regularly of clubs tardy in meeting these requirements and clubs will be fined accordingly
as Uni seem to start the season well . Sid Myers will be looking for consistent form from big ruckman Yandell, as well as Furphy, Stevenson, McCa rty and Dowling. De La finished 4th last year which was their first season back into A Grade after falling away in '88 . We have been impressed with their efforts to find players to take them back to the top . The next few weeks could tell if Bernie Dunn has recrited what they need . Uni by a whisker is our gut feeling but either would not surprise . OLD MELBURNIANS back into the top section after 7 years meet NOBS and Coach Alan Stoneham would need to have picked up some players if he wants his team to be competitive in the furnace of A Grade . Rumours suggestthey have been productive . Hibbins from Collegians is a good player . North have been quiet but no doubt their committee would have been active . They are to be congratulated on their coup of securing a share role at Brunswick VFA ground . This will add to their appeal for any new players . OM's too will break new ground by playing 3 or 4 home games at Prahran . However, Rd 1 sees them at Fawkner Park and provided Robe rt Hyde can get NOBS to overcome their notorious slow start to the season NOBS should take the points . Sunday at Elsternwick Park brings the Match of the Round with the much heralded B Section Premiers from last year OLD HAILEYBURIANS making it into A Section for the very first time in the club's history . It will be a tough debut coming up against the awesome ORMOND - Premiers for the past 4 years . The challenge of being measured against the best will no doubt appeal to Haileybury and Simon Meehan . Players such as David Connell, Walden, McKenzie and Tanner will be keen to show their wares . But they have to compete with a team that prides itself on performance of the highest order . Ormond has unearthed another crop of young players that combine well with the more established stars, testimony to the energy the clu b devotes to their under-age sides . New coach Michael McCa rt hy from Hawthorn/Brisbane Bears fame steps up for his first coaching assignment and a lot of interest will focus on how he directs his undoubtedly talented personnel . We doubt Haileybury have the fitness or experience to match Ormond especially at The Park . If they do, they have come of age. B SECTION by Tom Johnston
So another Football season is upon us . The Villain welcomes all on the eve of another great season . Good luck to all the sides in B-Grade -the season promises plenty . A warm hello to all my fellow tipsters . . let the contest begin . Now to today's game! On paperthe match of the round is between Banyule and Old Trinity at Heidelberg Park Oval . Banyule, after much soul searching from Season 1990, have started to get their act into gear . Coached by John Simpson and Team Manager Rick Brockwell, they have recruited far and wide . John Turnbull is back and rearing to go - Man Mountain Williams must give Simmo a full season . Captain Leigh Holt (my tip) is in great form . Their opponents, Old Trinity, have also recruited well . Captain Coach Alan Johnson should be great for Ammo football . Ruckman Nick Beardsley who returns from Fitzroy will give the Trinity on-ball players plenty of the ball and this should be a great game. Practise game form leans me to Banyule but if Trinity have improved on last season this game will be the crucial test . . . Banyule by 5 points . Paradians in a match that promises plenty . Mentonians are a young and enthusiastic side . State player Solly is an exciting player and Tony Bournon is brilliant, whilst Mark Barrett is reliable - they will worry plenty of sides but their lack of height will be a major problem . Old Paradians will be missing some great players due to injury or retirement with years of experience amongst them - Spillane, Considine, Flynn and Gleason are some that are missing but under coach Mick Mulvahill, the Parade boys, after good pre-season practise form, will be a tough physical side and in a searching test I believe Mentonians will fail . Will the old warhorse Ruckman Gary No rton play again this year? I hope so the Ammos need personalities like Gary . Parade a proven A or B side to have too much experience for Mentonians . . . Parade by 11 points . Parkside play host to St Bernards at Pitcher Park . Both sides appear to be set for a tremendous first up clash Parkside, coached by Bruce Ferguson (ex Collegians) have had mixed pre-season form with many of their gun. players carrying injuries . St Bernards, who were very disappointing in last year's finals under coach Frank Dunnell, must go on with the job . Parkside's small men are brilliant - Sedgwick, Panjari, Griffiths and Vincitorio but Parkside's lack of height will be a concern . St Bernards' ruckman Wayne Carey only needs to continue his 1990 form to be a major headache for Parkside. On-ball players Law and Mulkearns should have a great battle with the Red Devils on-ball players - winger Doran is fleet of foot . St Bernards are very good on their day - how good remains to be seen - home ground advantage swings me to Parkside by 5 points . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1991
Old Brighton at hoine on the Beach Oval take on last years C-Section runners-up University Blacks in what hould be a one-sided affair. Tonners' coach, Mark Parker has to instil extra desire from Barber, Wolf, Lade, impson and Templeton to crush sides by this very talented but lackadaisical Old Brighton side. University flacks coach, Steve Cerni, who must still be disappointed by his sides grand final game, will certainly miss the bility and height of Nick Heath. I don't think The Students can replace Nick . Jamie Garde must go the whole eason, And rew Gray is capable of more and John McDonald must control centre half forward . However at home lid Brighton by 29 points. Old Xaverians, who had a shocking season in A Grade last year, will need to re-group or face along hard season . aun players Denton, Dann, Tully, Visenti must consistently pressuretheir opposition . Kew, with off-field problems -placing Coach Trevor Read just last week will also have to regroup or the Brutal B rowns will struggle. Xavs n the day can match most A-Grade sides, however this scribe finds the Xavs the most indifferent team in A or Sections. Kew on the other hand always give plenty - their courage and commitment cannot be denied . I think ie retirement and loss of several key Kew players - Busutill, Cavanagh, McIntosh - will give the young Xavs ide a distinct advantage. Old Xavs to sneak in by 11 points. C SECTION by Les "The Accurate One" Argen
Welcome one and all to what promises to be a thrilling year in C Section ! Bulleen Templestowe are at home to State/Commonwealth Bank . The Stowers have appointed veteran ar ry Hansiou as non-playing coach . "H" has been a key ruckman in past years but will now rely on the likes ` Shane Farley, Tim Merrett, Peter George and likely youngsters Dean Matthews and Stevie Smith to share e hard work. Bulleen-Temp will also miss Andy Smythe who has retired . What's the story with the Bankers? (ell, they're a mixture of last year's D grade premiers (State) and F gradefinalists (Commonwealth) . To save space, om now on they're the "Cobras" . Coach Craig Jackson has led a hectic pre-season and will look to Matthew unne tt , Shane Benne tt and club legend Ronnie Griel to help bury the premiership blues. Preston will tackle Monash and neither side had much joy in 1990 . The Bullants will again be coached by artin de Bono and will be led on the field by Laurie Johnston. The club hopes the latter will be refreshed this .ar and will have support from on-ba!l players Craig Smart and Craig Hume and youngster Tony Vescio . Due cricket commitments (and perhaps 50th year celebrations!) the Bullants have had an interrupted pre-season . onash Blues were convincingly relegated from C Grade but are delighted to welcome back ex-premiership )ach Brian Ford . Monash will be led on field by Jamie Sturgess and are hoping for big things from G rego ry ipwell, Barry Seaton, Ian Hildebrand (if fit) and the Quin family. Fawkner play host to Caulfield . The ball has been bouncing well at Fawkner with new clubrooms underway d strong pre-season form under coach M ark Tymms who takes over the seniors this year. The "Fawks" will > hoping for big first up games from Robert Lawson, Warren Hoa re and Paul O'Lea ry. A Good bunch of youngsters also encouraging the hierarchy at Fawkner who narrowly missed promotion last year. Caulfield finished just kick behind Fawkner last season and will be revitalised under first year Coach Ray Keane and Captain Guy oston . Campbell Cooney is in retirement and key players will be Trevor Royals, Rob Morrisey and members the U19 premiership side Clint Simpson and Stua rt Holmes. St Kilda CBOC will travel to Whitefriars. The Saints missed the finals last year and have appointed club stalwart harlie Cape ro n as playing coach . They'll be a new-look side with new players, new ground and new multi-coloured mpers! The Saints were tight-lipped about good players but watch out for B re ndan Boyd, Tony Riddell and 3ter Kerian . Whitefriars were second last year in D section and have reached C grade in their 6th season in e VAFA. Coach is again Peter Hannan who has led a!ow-key pre-season and leading players could be Damien it row, Came ro n Huston, M ark Bateman and youngsters Anthony Corbone and Robert Reidy. Thomastown will seek to exploit their home ground advantage against Ivanhoe . Thomastown just missed 9 finals last year and have entrusted ex-ruckman Mark Bloodworth to coach them into B grade. Evergreen amateur my Feliowes wi!I captain the side and some likely youngsters are the Formosa and Rodney Kennedy. Ivanhoe e an unknown quantity to this writer. They will be keen to improve on last year but I believe their practice match ,m has not been exceptional . E LECTIONS : Bulleen Templestowe Fawkner Monash Blues Thomastown St Kilda CBOC

D SECTION by Peter Lemon
Having scored 5 out of 11 to date in my work competition, it looks as if I'm uniquely qualified to take over a VAFA Section tipping . And that won't be any easier : 37 phone calls later it looks as if all clubs are pretty happy with their pre-season build-up . Good numbers of recruits, a number of Clubs with new teams and/or new grounds, and encouraging results in pre-season games . Melbourne High at home to St Bedes is as tough a choice as they come . High's Reserves' premiership in 1990 - their first senior flag for 30 years - has given the Club a great boost, and with Peter Dalcos presenting the jumpers at the presentation night last Thursday, the boys should be all fired up, (providing not too many of them barrack for Essendon) . On the other hand, St Bedes, the pace-setters for most of 1990, are back to fu!I strength and over the injuries that marred the end of last season . They were a great combination for most of last season, and I'll take a punt on them reproducing that form early on this year . Old Camberwell are at home to Hampton Rovers. They have Ken Schwab back as coach after a gap of some seasons, and are pleased with their practice match form . In addition the Club has been strengthened by the reintroduction of their U nder 19 team forthe first time since 1985, although Secretary Richard Beale reckons establishing this new side has almost driven him crazy (one degree madder, Richard, and you could agree to take over the D Section tipping!) . To discover how Hampton Rovers are progressing we first tried to infiltrate to the highest echelons of the VAFA administrative machine, but Sue Anderson has been tied up with her son's cricket - a likely story! Later contact, however, was made with President Peter Blick, who seems pretty happy with the number of players who missed most or all of 1990 who are coming back . When that includes 1990 full forward Alf Panagiotidis the Rovers will have real bite - but I think for the moment they might be just a little underdone . Old Geelong today unveil two flags at Como - the seniors' being their first since the Relief of Mafeking - and I think the home ground advantage will probably get them home . They have lost fewer players than usual, but recruiting has been less than would have been expected by a premiership club . Practice match form - against clubs outside the VAFA - has been good, including a draw against Geelong Amateur at Geelong . It's all new at Glenhuntly (formerly Balaclava) with a new name and new ground and new rooms on which the local council has spent some $400,000 - a tremendous asset fcr any club . Unfortunately there's not a great deal I can add - Easter made communication with the Club difficult - but I'm sure they'll be out to make the Ogs entry into D section as difficult as possible . AJAX at home to St Kevin' is another hard decision . After an illustrious career in League and Amateur Football, Hen ry Ritt erman has retired, to be replaced - just - by about 30 new recruits . Last year's finals effort and the introduction of an U19s team have really pushed the Club along, and I expect them to do well this year, starting with a win on Saturday. Their opponents, St Kevin's, can boast a revamped committee, a new ground (occasionally), a first-ever win over Sorento in a practice match (after about 15 previous attempts), and the narrowest of losses to last year's premiers, State Bank . Things are "on the way" . However, I'1l go for the Albert Park advantage in a really close one. (Thought you were moving, boys . ) Old Ivanhoe's Andy Harris has controlled the flow of information like US at a press briefing in Saudi Arabia . Practice match form has been "satisfactory" (didn't even get round to finding out against whom), and this year's coach will again be long established VAFA man, Alan Salter. Ivanhoe will be looking to improve on last year's 4th placing, and I'!l tip them to start on the right foot, simply because of the home ground advantage . La Trobe's practice match form is also a little hard to judge, with their games against Hurstbridge and Assumption resulting in wins - the latter would be a feather in anyone's cap . Last year's Reserves coach, Collin Ovard, has taken over the senior team, but Uni sides sometimes tend to be a little unsettled early in the season (although with Peter O'Donoghue still in the administrative wings that shouldn't be that much of a problem) and I think I'!l wait a week or two whilst assessing their form . Welcome all to yet another season of Amateur Football - one that again promises plenty of thrills, spills and surprises. If last season is any indication this E again promises to be the most even in the competition as once again all the sides take on the appearance of being very evenly matched . Although they are most unhappy about being here we welcome back Bulleen United and Powerhouse and hope they have worked hard over the summer to ensure they are more successful this season . St M ary 's and Williamstown atthe other end of the scale earnt their promotion with excellent performances all last season, both are well run on and off thefield and having seen them both can say with confidence that they will not be easy beats . May I take this opportunity to wish all sides total success in the 1991 season and look forward to receiving the same support I received from all your clubs last season . Remember, it is your section so help yourselves by providing the relevant match information . PREVIEW ROUND 1 Bulleen United travel to Columbia Park for their first ever visit and will find Mazenod no easy opposition . The Noddies, still smarting from their disappointing finish to last season will be looking for a good start and will prove too strong in the finish . A very tough initiation for St Mary's, who await Doveton travelling to Ferndale Park for the first time . This should prove an interesting encounter . I'm nottoo sure either side are particularly suited by the confines of this small ground . Rumours have it that big Tony Adhore is missing for the Doves. St M ary 's practice form is not that flash but the emotion of unfurling their premiership flag should be enough to see them through in a very close game . West Brunswick vs Old Essendon promises to be a nightmare to tip . Both had their moments last year but were very inconsistent, in another close game the home ground advantage should be just enough to get the Westies home. Powerhouse renew acquaintances with North Brunswick at Albert Park . The House will obviously be looking to improve on last year's efforts while the Northies were without a doubt the unlucky side of the Section . They will be anxious to start on a bright note and should prove a little strong for Powerhouse who won't go down without a fight . Williamstown CYMS welcome St Andrew's who did not enjoy the best of seasons in 1990 . Willy have plenty to prove to many people and are probably the hardest to beat on their home ground - a big advantage - and will today start the return to E section with a big win . In the final game of the round Brunswick and Aquinas clash in a match that should provide plenty of skills. Both these sides were the big improvers in the later part of last season, both will be looking to improve and capitalise on that . In a game that at this early stage is very hard to select the home ground advantage may just be enough to see the Wicks home in a very close one. F -TROOP by Peter Hili e
Welcome to F -Troop which is sponsored this year by the Comedy Festival and which will be officially opened today at 5.30 pm in the Anz Pavillion at Albert Park when those two outstanding-up comedians Tommy "Getta" Brain and Neil "Bucko" Buckley put on a floor show for all interested amateur comedy officionados. The photograph you see at the top of this page will be gone next week and replaced by an up-to-date pic that more accurately records my age and lifestyle . The photographic saga began last yearwhen Gett a sent in a negative print and nobody noticed the difference (see E Grade section) . Speaking of other journalists, the evergreen Clarence has again challenged our tipping prowess to the tune of a slab of your choice . So I'll be really concentrating with my selections when I get around to them . F-Troop promises to be fiercely contested at a very high standard if the off-season rumours are any guide . Joan of Ark's enforced merger of the Harry Trotters with the Ralph Bank (predicted by F-Troop in July 1990) has meant that several sides have picked up some very good players ( e.g . S parkes and Kraska) . ANZ Bank and Peninsula have fared best . Elsternwick and Old Ca rey have recruited well according to Boycey, Ace of Spies who also reportsthat UHSOB spearhead Santa Lucia has shed nearly 3 stone (or 6 of Flash Phil's luncheons to be more precise) . New chums with good credentials are Boro nia Park and St Patrick's Mentone - the latter is expected to be a typical FTroop wild card . Meanwhile steady improvement is expected from three of last year's strugglers in Richmond Centrals, University Reds and Salesian Old Collegians. FTroop will bring you match reports and best players on a weekly basis and I urge club press reporters to fax material to me on Mondays (Fax 377 8250) . As well weekly player and personality awards will be a feature of F-Troop . ROUND 1 • The B rewers eager to bounce back after a disappointing 1990 should have a few goals in reserve over the Elitists who have had an interrupted pre-season . • The Shamrocks take on the Redz at Galway Bay in what should be a close tussle . The Sham rocks picked up the Birmingham Six in the internal draft which should make their attack more explosive but the Redz have put in a long pre-season and have good practice match form . Redz by three twins. • The Botanists are at home to the Poets and I'll tip them on the basis of the home ground advantage . The Poets youthful exuberance points to a bright future and I won't be surprised if they cut the shrubs down to size • The Backyard Boys are at home to the Sailors and if the recruiting rumours are true they should do enoug h. at home to win . The Sailors are inclined to begin the season slowly anyway but are expected to be a threat for the four. Backyard Boys by 4 lans. • The big tip this year is the Zedders and at home to the Stationmasters they should record a comfortable win to start their drive for promotion . Zedders by eight twins . And of course, best wishes to all ten FTroopers for a successful and enjoyable year of amateur football .

.. ~~_ Today the eagerly awaited ninety-ninth season opens with revamped G Sections which include nine newly entere d
sides . Selecting winners when each team considers itself the likely premiers is a titanic task . With due respect to last season's performance, and a fair sprinkling of esoteric intuition I make the following predictions . G NORTH North Old Boys who have been given good performances in the pre season games should defeat Oid Scotch who often do not start their season in top form . Old Paradians make the sentimental journey to their former home to meet Old Xaverians . The Xaverians have an enviable record in this section and should take the points against an Old Paradian side which is an amalgam of experience and youth . Newcomers to open age football Chirnside

Newcomers Old Westbourne ave today's hardest task as they journey to Kew to play last year's early leader and ultimate finalist Kew . All known lata points to a Kew victory. FIT will be at home to Therry whose winning form eluded me so often last season . is rumoured that FIT has struggled for March numbers and this coupled with Therry's Club depth, convince ie to select Ther ry. Eitham play Banyule on eleventh hour inclusion in this section . SOUTH The match of the round sees two of last season's finalists De La Salle and Bloods opposed . Both sides wil l te keen to start with victory and I expect a high standard game . Bloods are my selection largely because of their xcellent record . Glenhuntly, by name and Balaclava by ancestory, will be at home to St Kevins who had a lisappointing 1990 season . The Glenhuntly form was hard to follow in previous seasons but today, given their ew base I expect them to open with a win. Kontias North Caulfield have broadened their name to give them tronger home base and to attract support the "Magpies" will be anxious to defeat newcomers Mazenod . I favour e 'Noddies whom I expect to be the fitter combination . My first club Powerhouse make the long journey to layton to play M onash Whites who may not yet be settled into football . Nevertheless Powerhouse could lack e football talent of the students and so I favour Monash Whites . The always well performed CBC St Kilda on ieir new home ground should ensure St John's OC (Dandenong) has a debut game to remember . CBC should !merge victorious . Monash G ryphons a new side playing in Caulfield await the reformed Old Geelong . How loes one select the winner? A new side versus one whose previous record was poor is no basis on which to base ,n assumption . Given the euphoria at COMO last seaon and because no snow is available (it is Head of the River iough!!) I select Old Geelong . The newly amalgamated State and Commonwealth Bank side has the bye.
BEREAVEMENT UNIVERSITY BLUES has had a bad start to 1991 with the sad passing early in January of their long-serving Time-kepper Graeme Coleman who had carried out his onerous task with dedication since joining the "BLUES" from Caulfield Grammarians in 1973 . To the end of last season he had officiated in some 800 games . Anyone who has experienced this important, but sometimes thankless task, must realise just how much dedication and attention to detail would be required to complete this degree of service to the Club. Over the years he has been a most reliable member of the MUFC, well known all through Amateur ranks as one who was rarely short of a word, he was never the less a leader of those unsung heroes whose efforts ensure the smooth conducting of our games . His being presented with the coveted MUFC Order of Merit in 1979 was a highlight of his time with the BLUES, being second in importance to an MUFC Life Membership . All at the BLUES will miss you GRAEME . You and your efforts will be remembered by all who are like you were - TRUE BLUE!

Firstly, a welcome to the new teams ini the U19 competition - Ajax, Old Camberwell, Old Mentonians and St Peter's. All four teams competed in a Lightning Premiership at Elsternwick Park together with the University team a fortnight ago and provided an interesting day'sfootball with Ajaxjust pipping Old Mentone . Well done Jackas ! Disappointing to see Banyule, Kew and St Kevin's decide not to field teams this year. Interesting to note that ALL ten 'A' Grade c!u bs have consistently fielded teams in the U19 Competition . As "Stevo" and the "Powerbroker" keep trying to cut me back on space, I again have to keep my best player reviews to the 2 or 3 best from the winning team only each week . Therefore, could coaches/team managers of the winners ring me ( 568 4727) on Saturday nights or Sundays with these details . Alternatively a fax (646 5053) on Monday mornings will suffice. Thanks . CHALLE NGE : Once again, a challenge to Halfer, Hilly, Villainand Hagarfor a "slab" on percentage of winners selected . None of you (and Rowston) have paid up for last year so it's double or nothing . (Due to unfinalised draws for Div. 2, we'll have to commence challenge with Round 2 .) DIVISION 1 THIS WEEK'S GAMES De La are sti!l smarting from their surprise Grand Final loss in '90 and Denis McGrory is determined to atone this year and will get off to a good start with a percentage booster against the Students who were a!itt!e disappointing in the Lightning P/ship. Xavs copped a tough starting draw last year and I think this year is a repeat with a first-up against Parade who are fielding only one team this year. At this stage, only a toss of the coin can decide my selection so I'll go for the usual when in doubt - the home team - Xavs. Ormond are at home to Mazenod who have progressed from Div 3 in '89 to Div 1 in '91 - a great effort! Noddies will certainly find it tougher this year but I still think they can get the 4 points today against my old team . Old H'bu ry, under the leadership of the "astute"(?) Gilia are hosts to Old Scotch . H'bu ry have been OK for numbers whilst Scotch couldn't make up the numbers a couple of weeks ago. With home ground and Gilla, you have to go for the Bloods . St Bernard's, losing 1st semi finalists last year, have retained just about all of last year's team and recruited Terry Davis as coach (and "Love's Young Dream" as Secretary!) . They should be too strong at home for last year's Div 2 runners-up, Collegians . Finally, last year's suprise (to everyone outside Marcellin) premiers take on Brighton at Bulleen . The Eagles have kept a few of the flag winning team and have an abundance of numbers. The Tonners finished 1990 on a good winning streak and if they have kept most of those guys will give Swainy more joy this year. However, I think the Eagles will be just a smidgin too good for them today . SELECTIONS : De La Blue Old Xavs Mazenod Blue Old Haileybu ry St Bernard's Marcellin DIVISIOA! 2 - NORT H With the late withdrawal of Kew, Therry have a bye today . Albanvale, disappointed with their Grand Final loss last year, will be eager to get a better start this year (lost 3 of first 4 in '90) but won't find it easy against the consistent NOBS despite Terry Mills' prediction that they aren't as good as last year . I'1l believe you at this stage Terry and go for the Cobras. Chirnside Park took a while to get going in their first year and, if they retain most of last year's team will be much more competitive in '91 . They should win first up against Parkside who are struggling for numbers . Thomastown had 30 in training 3 weeks ago and home ground advantage should enable them to get home narrowly against Old Ivanhoe . Bul!een Temp, who finished well last year, have appointed former senior coach, Alan Parris, as coach and, with most of last year's team available, they should win at home against Whitefriars, who will be keen to make up for last year - their worst ever . Peter Davidson is at the helm of Aquinas again and should be a happy man tonight after the game against Old Trinity, who were unable to field a team 2 weeks ago . SELECTIONS : Albanvale Chirnside Park Thomastown Bulleen-Temp Aquinas Therry have the bye DIVISION 2 - SOUT H St Bede's have been lucky to draw Monash first up as the Students are renowned as slow starters although Keith Frearson says they will be a more competitive unit this year. Ajax will be very confident after their Lightning P/ship win but I expect the O M 's opposition to be much stronger than what they encountered 2 weeks ago . OMs are regular U19 finalists and I expect them to be there again this year . They should get home today - just! Old Mentonians, the newcomers, come up against the strong De La's 2nd team who have always been very competitive in their 3 or 4 years in the camp . I would expect of couple of Mentone's better players at E'wick Park 2 weeks ago might make their senior team and that would make today's game a really tough task first up . I fancy the Golds will get up today. Hampton took a long time to finalise their coaching appointment have re-appointed Steve Duketis . I expect the High boys may be just a bit more settled than whilst 6Relb High the Rovers. With the late withdrawal of Uni Blacks I think new club Old Camberwell will be lining up today against last year's Div 3 Premiers, Caulfield Grammarians. As Caulfield have kept some of their P/ship line up, I expect them to snare the 4 points today. Finally M azenod Blacks take on the new VAFA club - St Peter's. Noddies made the finals last year while St Peter's were disappointing in the Lightning P/ship and would need a big improvement to get home today. SELECTIONS:

MARKETING NEWS by Mike McArthur-Alle n
The VAFA conducted their Annual Sponsors' Forum on Wednesday March 6 at Elsternwick Park. The night provides unique opportunity for Sponsors to promote their Company and explain howClub Personnel can benefit financially by utilizing Sponsors' products or services . An innovation this year was the provision of a Sponsors' #vlanual to, not only each VAFA Club, but also to each Sponsor . This was very positively received by the various companies and seen as an excellent resource . The night was attended by some 105 Club Representatives and 24 Sponsor Representatives and various members of the VAFA Executive and Administration . Could I again remind clubs that it is VITAL to SUPPORT all of our 1991 Sponsors . If you haven't combed the Sponsors' Manual yet, I urge you to do so NOW . Delay will mean it will probably be forgotten and loss of VAFA Sponsors will lead to an inevitable increase in Club Affiliation Fees . Sponsors too, are urged to use each others' products and services . It is a means of increasing business and at the same ti me developing a community spirit within the VAFA Sponsors . VAFA networking has already provided some Sponsors with enhanced sales . The potential within an organization the size of the VAFA to facilitate greater networking, must be appealing to Sponsors - it is a WIN/WIN situation . The VAFA is proudly sponsored in 1991 by the following companies and organizations : MAJOR SPONSOR VICTORIAN HEALTH PROMOTION FOUNDATION DENTAL HEALTH SERVICES VICTORI A LEVEL 4 SPONSO R • AUSTRALIAN WOOL CORPORATIO N * COLES NEW WORLD SUPERMARKETS • CUB CARLTO N LEVEL 3 SPONSO R • ANSETT AUSTRALIA * HUGH LYON KNITWEA R • CADBURY SCHWEPPES * NATIONAL MUTUAL TRUSTEES • HBAlSPORTS COVER * SPALDING AUSTRALI A * FORESTERS FRIENDLY SOCIETY LEVEL 2 SPONSORS * BEAUREPAIRS • SOUTHERN CROSS HOTE L • DILETTARE • SUMMIT CANTEEN SUPPLY SERVICE S LEVEL 1 SPONSORS ,t ASTRA • KODAK • BDF BEIERSDOR F • MANIFOLD STATIONERS ,t COMMANDER COMPUTERS • PROFESSIONAL UNIFORMS * DIADORA - (ACTIVE LEISURE) • RACV • FERRARI FORMAL HIR E • SPORTSGUARD LABORATORIES • ESANDA FINANCE • TOWN & COUNTRY SIGN S • JEFFERSON COMMUNICATIONS • TROPHY TOWN The VAFA is indeed indebted to its sponsors for the generous suppo rt they are providing for the VAFA in 1991 and urges all VAFA Club Officials, Members, Players and Followers to recognize this and in turn suppo rt these sponsors who have shown their commitment to Amateur Football .

Amateur football followers were saddened with the news of George McTaggart's death late last year . George had devoted much of his life to Amateur football and was widely known as the father of VAFA Under 19 football and of this magazine 'The Amateur Footballer ' The Executive has decided to honor George's contribution by leather-binding a collection of all the Amateur Footballer' magazines, displaying them in a prominent position in the Administration building and calling them `THE GEORGE McTAGGART COLLECTION'. **~Y The McTaggart name will be carried on in the Association however. George's wife, Nancy, will be one of the goal umpires at all the Elsternwick Park reserve matches . This appointment each week will give her time to dash home after each game and receive scores of all matches played and this will support Ron Hall y
and newly appointed head Press Secretary, Norm Nugent, in completing this vital match day task . Son Peter will continue to be a boundary umpire this year .

VIC HEALTH PRE-SEASON LIGHTNING PREMIERSHI P This competition has been held for the past 2 years for New Under 19 teams . On Sunday March 24, 1991, 5 teams competed in a Round-Robin at Elsternwick Park, on a points system . Thefinal was athrillerwith Ajax narrowly getting home from Old Mentonians. Both gave indications of being in for a good season. The final standings : Ajax 14 pts; Old Mentonlans 13 pts; Old Camberwell 8 pts ; University 5pts ; St Peters Clayton Nil . Congratulations to Coach Rick Chazan and the Ajax Football Club. They received a great trophy supplied by VAFA Sponsor Trophy Town . Well done to all 5 clubs' players and officials . ** * COACHING ACCREDITATIO N The VAFA Executive has again this year resolutely insisted on a minimum of Level 1 Accreditation for all Under 19 Coaches. This stance has been applauded by a number of other football bodies and some are following suite . It can only help to further lift the image of the VAFA to both prospective players and parents if we place a high premium on the quality of coaches within our association . ~

Looking Back by Noel Rundle
5 YEARS AGO - 198 6 President John Dillon welcomed five new clubs, St Andrews, St Leonards OC and Whitefriars to F Section, and also to Eltham and GTV-9 to compete in G Section . Mark Hanneberry had returned to coach North Old Boys. A Section scribe Ross Booth picked Collegians new player Rick Schober to have a big season. Young Ormond star Simon Eishold had won a place on Melbourne's list . A Section umpires to open the season were Ron Lippold, Peter Wiseman, Shane Urwin, Steve McCarthy, Colin King, Ken Coughlin, Brian Goodman, John Horwood, Brian Hayward, Dick Tracey. John Fisher was appointed coach of the State team to play in the Carnival in Adelaide in late June to celebrate South Australia's 150th year . Prior to the Carnival would be the fifth game in the series against VFA to be played at Elsternwick Park, the score to date standing at two all . 150 games to Ormond's fearless little river, Tony "Bones" Boyanton. Sir Bernard Callinan was the Association's new Patron-in-Chief. 1985 premiers Ormond got a real hiding from Caulfield Grammarians, 15.10 to a dreadful 6.24. Stone, Matt hews and McClelland were stars forthe 'fields' coach G re g Tootell .
which had taken place over several weeks, culminated in U. Blues being relegated from A Section to B Section for season 1981, due to an irregularity in circumstances concerning a permit application for a prominent U. Blues player. AJAX was promoted to A Section .
10 YEARS AGO - 1981 Alex Johnson and John Dillon were elected president and chairman respectively. Life member Manson Russel retired from presidency after serving in that role with distinction . Despite a number of applications, no new clubs were admitted . Sherrin footballs were the only approved balls for use in senior matches. "Poaching" committee of Messrs Russel, Keam, Hawkins and Nathan set up to try and eradicate problem. Old Xaverians deny having approached Mr Des Tuddenham to become a playing member of their club. Executive committee were continuing to explore all possibilities of a permanent headquarters. There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals series with owners bringing their dogs along for a run (including G re g Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that the Treasurer suggested to the Executive that owners be charged $1 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park. Still, its family football, and what's a family without a Great Dane, or a St Bernard, or a Doberman Pincer to play with the children ! There was a sensation to start the season when on the Friday night prior to the first game, an investigation
20 YEARS AGO - 1971 Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amateur Footballer man for years, and a particular enthusiast of Interstate and AAFC games succeeded Ernest F. Atkins as President, who together with two former secretaries, Jack McCann and Geoff Moo re , was appointed "Patron of the Association". Man;eilin and North Brunswick joined the Association (Peter Fre nch, VAFA general manager for 1983 to 1989, played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kicked one goal - NR) . Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head (Old Haileyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), Paddy Walsh ( St Kevin's) and John Bennett (Ivanhoe) . 1970 "A" premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailed Collegians by 2 goals at 3/4 time but put on 9.7 to 0.4 to win easily. Best for the victors were Atchison (5), Clark and Lester and Crow Ople Roach (5) for Collegians . After setting a club record by winning three successive best and fairest awards Mick Quinlan deserved honour of appointment as captain of Old Paradians.
15 YEARS AGO - 1976 Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the Amateur Footballer's A Section tipster for 1976, a new feature with other confident characters . "B" John Byrne, "C" Alex Johnson, "D" Jim Fidge, " E" Syd Whitfield, "F" Keith Findlay. Junior 1 Norm Nugent, and yes, they couldn't keep him out, Junio r 2, the one and only Peter Nathan . Alf picked Old Trinity to beat U. Blues, 1975 premier coach Gus Mitchell's St Bernard's to do Peter O'Donohue's ( State Coach) U. Blacks, NOB "always trained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburg and Rese rvoir Old Boys "a thriller" - lean to ROB's and Ormond, eagerfor a first up win for new coach Ian Came ro n to defeat De La Salle "minus Peter Murnane". You might say "Alfie needed the run" -forthe record, Blue annihilated OT, Gus did the right thing with a 31 point win, NOB (L. Murray 6 goals) too good for Blues (best player - R . Booth), Coburg 110 points over ROB, and poor "Cammie", De La swamped Ormond by 45 points . Only two out of five, Alf . A "sour note ' to start season - a record 13 players reported for an opening round .
25 YEARS AGO - 196 6 For the second time in four years the Association has been forced to vacate its centra l ground, the latest blow bei ng theJoss of the St Kilda Cricket Ground. The Association had used Olympic Parkforfive years after the 1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of adog racing track decreased the size of the ground and it became too small for Australian Rules . The following clubs did not reappear in 1966: RAAF, Postal Institute, Bellfie!d, Cassle (this was a club based on a Greek brotherhood and whoseequiva!ent in South Australia were Al Premiers in the SAAFL in 1985), Monash Whites and Kooyong . Mr John Dillon was elected to the executive replacing Mr Geoff Moore who had resigned.
30 YEARS AGO - 1961 Ian Cleland (in the 70's and 80's an "authority on ABC on lawn bowls, trotting and football and anything `else he decides he knows a bit about) was appointed VAFA umpires advisor. Rumour has it that Ian got reapponted each year because he sang so well at the Association's Annual Dinner-those smashing Top 40's numbers, "A Man Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship". He usually told a couple of jokes of unusual quality before he sang . Other notable events were that Mr Geoff Moo re of Collegians AFC was awarded life membership, and Old Geelong Grammarians, desperate afterfinishing last in "B" Section, turned to former coach and star Noel Rundle to revitalise them in "C" section as well as be club president! !
