EDITORIAL by Phil Stevens

Good afternoon football followers . Amateurfootball 1991 got off to aflying start last weekend in what seemed to be a relatively hassle free weekend of matches. The highlight of my week was the Presidents', Secretaries' and Members' Dinner which is held annually atthe startof each season to getthe officials of all the clubs together, to mix with each other and to see that although games of football are there to be won each Saturday, many good friendships are able to be cultivated through football via functions such as the Presidents', Secretaries' and Members' Dinner . The Southern C ross Hotel is a magnificent venue for an occasion such as this and really creates a great atmosphere and sense of grandeur. Thanks are extended to Barry Fink and Peter Felbel for their willingness to work closely with Administration in putting the night on . Bob Rose was the guest speaker for the evening and captivated all present with an absorbing summary of his career from its origins in Nyah West through to him becoming a legend of the VFL . Bob's humility and great love for Collingwood and football endeared him to even the most anti-Collingwood people present . Noel Rundle's magnificent introduction to Bob and his post speech presentation to Bob showed again what a wonderful ornament to Amateur football Noel is. Ian Govera of Coodabeens fame, then brought roars of laughter to the Southern Cross Ballroom as he related his career of 75 senior games with Geelong (as a trainer!) and his love of all football over his period of time in the entertainment industry . A great night and a great example of all Amateur clubs combining together to launch a wonderful season we will be hoping for afour-times bigger evening at the Southern Cross in 1992 to launch the Centenary Seaso n - 100 years`of Amateur football . Have,,a great day at the football today . Phil Stevens VAFA General Manage r

A SECTION PREVIEW by Phil Stevens and Mike McArthur-Allen ROUND 1 MATCHES - REVIEW The opening of the 1991 A Section season commenced in ideal footy weather and saw both of last year's Grand Finalists soundly beaten ; De La are much stronger than we suspected ; Therry squeaked home and Old 6Aelbumians had a nightmare start to their return to A Grade after 8 years . The Match of the Round last Sunday at The Park revealed a fast running well-balanced Old Haileyburians being fartoo good on the day for a strangely sluggish Ormond . McKenzie, D. Connell and Coach Meehan were far too slick for their Ormond opponents and Ormond were cut apart by these 3 in the centre square and with Tanner winning well on his wing they gave their forwards plenty of the ball . Walden was damaging with 4 goals and looked quick and strong . Ormond had few winners with Brown being their only real highlight . His work in defence was impressive but he lacked support . Haileybu ry out-ran and out-numbered Ormond on far too many occasions and made a very auspicious debut in their first A Grade game with a 53 point victory . On Saturday we witnessed a very committed Marcellin defeat a lack-lustre Collegians at The Park . Leading by 2 points at half time the Eagles were much more desperate and worked better to a team plan than did the Lions in the second half . Sla tte ry, Chun, and Luke Getson were great and Caffry was let loose on too many occasions and kicked 5. Galbraith tried valiantly for Collegians but was let down by too many of his teammates . An 8 goal to 1 third quarter by Therry after trailing by 3 goals at half time set up an 11 point win over Scotch . Therry are our tip as big improvers so to only go down by 11 points is a reasonable effort by Scotch especially out at Oak Park . Ma tton roving and G rocock on the wing did well and watch young Jason Reddick this year as he can play a bit . Smith (as usual) was one of Scotch's good players and Keipe rt showed some promise. NOBs trounced Old Melburnians by 88 points at Fawkner Park . Newcomer Brazil played very well at CHF and spies tell us Booth and Tim Jones showed good early season form . OMs' Witts brothers tried hard and Asst Coach Hibbins had a lot of the ball off the HB line . It may be a long season for O Ms if this form cannot be quickly reversed. The remaining game saw what was expected to be a close game be anything but after quarter time. De La Salle bolted away from Uni Blues kicking 11 goals to 2 for the quarter. Uni were without their big ruck giant Yandell but Furphy battled well against superior odds with the De La runners swarming down the ground . Mahoney roving for De La and Toohey both did a lot of work and were well supported by plenty of teammates . ROUND 2 MATCHES - PREVIEW De La play host to Marcellin and this game should help to place some guide to the relative strengths of these two sides forthis year. The Eagles are bubbling with enthusiasm after their good second half at The Park last week and are keen to show De La whythey have played off in two consecutive Preliminary Finals . There i s a big chance Dimmatina may return this week and he is a very good player . Matt Getson was a very mobile big man last week and will again give Chun and Slattery plenty of the ball . Young players Tranquili and Wooller are very promising . De La will again need Fraser at his elusive best but M ahoney, Lowe and Harrison will help set the De La wave of runners going . Rennie at CHB is an attacking defender who may pose problems for Marcellin's forward line. We think De L a at home will be hard to beat but they would not need to take the Eagles lightly. NOBs will christen their new ground at Brunswick and meet Haileybury. Both had big wins last week although the quality of Haileybu ry 's opposition was much higher than North's. This promises to be another acid test for Simon Meehan's boys . North have never been easy to beat at home although this is new turf for all sides this year. Brazil will need to be held by Armitage and Baxter will have his work cut out on Egan . Connell, McKenzie and Meehan will suprise No rt h with their speed of hand and foot and may really hold the key for Haileybu ry. The boys from McKinnon passed last week's test with flying colours . Provided they don't get too carried away with that result they should win here . Collegians are home at the Harry Trott to Therry in what is a game that could make or break either side. Collegians have to rebound and do so with authority . They looked dispirited and even disinterested at times last wweek against Marcellin . The players they have lost have taken a real edge off the talent and team balance . Schober, Mount and Benne tt have to take more control of the game. By contrast, Therry are ideally placed to have 8 points from 2 games if they get their running game and linking play going . Biddlestone, Ma tt on and Reddick will be difficult on-ballers to keep in check and Zanetti is a very lethal forward on his game . We fancy Therry to "get the Lions on their line" and take home the points. Ormond will unfurl their 1990 flag at home against Scotch and will be looking to make amends for a pitiful performance last week at The Park . This will be a hard fought contest as they always seem to be when these two meet. Scotch only went down to Therry by 11 points out at Oak Park and not manv sides are comfortable plavinq

have had their great pride savaged and will be in a very hungry mood at E .E . Gunn out there. However. Ormond Reserve this week Some very experienced players failed to perform last week and left too much to the new young those that escape will be keen to make certain their places are playeres . The selector's axe may fa!l on some and his performance and will be again looking for Smith not tnjeopardy this week. Scotch will rely on Fuller to lift Ormond should rebound from last week and win . and Keipe rt to continue on with last week's good form . Mentonians. Both sides coming off thrashings will be Sunday at Elsternwick Park will see Uni Blues vs Old wanting to get 4 points on the board to forget last week . OM s' last trip to Headquarters will be a bitter memory when they were handed out a humi!iat :, ig defeat in last year's B Section GF . The doubts were raised then as to whether they were ready for promotion and nothing they did last week have removed those thoughts from critics' minds. Simon Derham keeps telli ng us that they have improved enormously from 1990 so this will be their chance to que!l the knockers . Uni without Yandell are not the threat they could be with the giant giving them first use of the ball . But Furphy, Stevenson and Worsley are great ball winners and with MeGinnes back at FF they can kick ,goals on big grounds . Hibbins will win many possessions but must be more aware of the defensive responsibilities . The Witts and Nicholls are great running players who will like the space to make their speed a real weapon . However, we can't see OMs taking the points.

B SEC'I'HOW by Tom Johnston

The opening round of the season got underway in excellent conditons, with the wind having little influence on the outcome of the game . The Villain has already proven that he shouldn't be listened to after predicting only two winners from last week's games ! The match of the day between Banyule and Old Trinity proved to be the mis-match of the season . What a turnaround from the last match of season 1990 when the Banyule side completely outclassed Trinity to the first match of thisseason! Old Trinity, coached by ex Melbourne rover Alan Johnston, started the first quarter of season 1991 with a 7 goal burstthat left Banyule floundering . The second quarter Trinity continued their excellent work with last, year's Captain Coach, Russell Forbes, coming under notice with excellent disposal with either hand or foot. Trinity led by 57 points at half time . Banyule coach, John Simpson, pleased with his players to at least showtheir supporteis they were trying . Alas it was all to no avail as Trinity continued to outplay the listless Banyule side. The supporters of both sides were stunned (especially Banyule) as they nowtrailed by 92 points . Trinity were great - Banyule, the known front runners, had cracked in the first game of the season! The last quarter Banyule outscored Trinity 5 ,goals to 3 to finally lose by 76 points in a very poor display . Hats off to Trinity on a top first match-Best player for Trinity, back from Fitzroy, was C H F Nick Beardsley who was awesome and defender Nick Sammut went the four quarters ; CHB Rick Beardsley clearly was a Rock of Gibralter ; back pocket Craig Robinson (the old man of Ammo football) was impassable as was fullback Ian Wallace . Forward David O'Shanhassy's 5 goals was a match winning effort . Banyule's best players were hard to find - defender Bruce M oloney at least had a go as did fu!l back Andrew Mill . Marcus Fraumano showed great determination - the rest were pathetic . Old Mentonians at home unfurling their premiership flags were pumped full of adrenalin against Old Paradians proving this scribe wrong with an excellent first up win against their most experienced opponents . Their win was full of merit as they trailed the OP side by 15 points at half time . The third quarter saw both sides goal for goal in a great contest with neight side shirking the issue . 11 goals were scored leaving Mentonians trailling by only 19 points . The last quarter was all OMs - the youth, the endeavour, the adrenalin were all working in their favour ; the tackling was ferocious -18 tackles in the last quarter was great football endeavour. Parade veterans were giving their a!! butto no avail as the Mentonians, sensing a victory, clinched it with a6 goal last quarter. Old Mentonians' best player was rover Russell MacQuire who was just inspirational for his side . Winger Craig Best continually drove the ball forward and full forward Adam Acreman's 8 goals was great value for his side while defender Nick MacQuire stood out with his tenacious play . Pa rade be st o!aver was Matt Considine who always gives 100 %

Promoting good healtin and preventmg ` eSS in° our community

to his club. Veteran rover Frank Gleason, after kicking the goal of the day, was disappointed with the end result but his individual effort was supereb . Nick Kerr's 6 goals at full forward was excellent value ; Peter Cosgriff on the wing gave a good display for 4 quarters . All in all this game was a great contest . Parkside at home to St Bernards was a great result for the Red Devils under new coach Bruce Ferguson (ex Collegians) . The doggies aided with the use of a 3 goal breeze looked good in the first quarter . Cowell for Parkside was more than a match for Wayne "Skyscraper" Carey at the centre bounces which kept Parkside in the game and trailing by only 12 points at quarter time . Parkside dominated the 2nd quarter the three rovers were running riot - Panjari, Sedwick and Vincitorio looked for Sansonetti as centre half forward ;and only Frank's poor kicking kept the Doggies in the game. They now trailed Parkside by 25 points at the half time break . The 3rd quarter saw coach Frank Dunnell trying to plug holes all over the forward line - Carey playing a kick behind play was starting to take the big one grabbers . However full forward Luke Gollant was their only effective forward . Parkside's magic three rovers kept running, tackling and most importantly stopped St Bernards from getting back into the match . Instead of having a huge victory, Parkside didn't go on with thejob in the last quarter. Griff iths on the wing, who had a picnic early, started to tire, young Doggies rover Co ry Mallia was very impressive in the last quarter but he didn't have enough teammates and when the final siren went Parkside had scored an impressive 42 points win over a very disappointing St Bernards . Best on ground was Parkside rover Lee Panjari . Nino Vincitorio knows how to play well ; ruckman Lyndly Cowell added Wayne Carey to his tally of victories ; Frank 'The Tank' Sansonetti kicked 7 goals - but the 7 should have been 12 - but was excellent value for the Red Devils. St Bemards' best was Wayne Carey. Full forward Luke Gollant's 5 goals was the result of some sensational marks . Defender Andrew "Son of" Nathan was the Doggies best defender. Young rover Cory Mallia had a red hot go but found his opponents to be someting else ! Old Brighton at home against University Blacks should have been a certain victory, however no one bothered to tell the Students and no one bothered to tell this scribe the Tonners had lost so many gun players . The Students jumped Brighton in the first quarter and showed new found aggression gaining the upper hand to have a 9 point lead at quarter time. The second quarter was all University (would they miss Nick Heath? this scribe wrote last week!) . At half time the match was in effect over as Brighton trailed by 43 points in perfect conditions . The third quarter was the best of the match - the Students kicked 5 .4 to the Tonners 4.5 to now lead by 48 points at 3/4 time . The last quarter saw Brighton start to get back into the game . Their persistence was beginning to show on the scoreboard and the Students fitness (lack of) was starting to tell . However to their credit the Students managed 5 .3 to Tonners 7.9 in a great entertaining quarter of Ammo football . The Students recorded a comfortable 36 point victory. Old Brighton best player was centreman Andrew Pryor who continually won the hard ball while half foward flanker Stewart Murray was lively all day. Defender Chris James was the pick of the defence and centre half back Came ro n Lade took manytelling marks . Uni Blacks best player was rover Simon Cheel, although inconsistent, played a great game. Ruck rover M att Gibney was strong throughout the match and ruckman Alex McArthur after many years in the reserves was excellent value for the Students as was defender James Radford . Old Xaveri ans, demoted from A Grade, had much to prove to Kew, howeverthe match did not reach the standard that was expected . Xavs started the game with plenty of purpose ; Kew, undermanned, started with their usual determination but trailed by 15 points at quarter time. The second quarter Xavs went further ahead with many players kicking goals and at half time Xavs led by 24 points . The third quarter was a beauty - both sides gave their all - Xavs kicked 5 .1 to Kew 4.2 ; Kew now trailed by 29 points at 3/4 time . The last quarter was a one act affair . Xavs werefu!l of running (and themselves) ; Kew's lack of fitness - after having 5 coaches why aren'ttheyfit? (sorry Ted) - started to show Xavs were cocky - Xavs played good football and Kew were glad the bell went, leaving them 56 points behind Xavs. Best on ground for Xavs was Dermot Dann who really is a gun player - defender Richard Curtain had an excellent game ; forward Bill 'The Man' Denton 5 goals was a match-winning effort . Back pocket John Dalton was steady throughout the game. Kew's best player was the boy from Echuca, centreman Steve Oliver, who made an impressive debut forthe brutal (you're kidding!) Browns . Forward part-time rover Rob Barry 's 5 goals was an excellent result from a very determined player ; rover Craig White went 4 quarters with courage and commitment . Craig 'be tter than' Bradley gave a good performance . TODAY'S GAMES St Bernards, disappointing last week, clash with the cocky Old Mentonians who had a great win ; can the Doggies bounce back? Wayne Carey must give his rovers first use of the ball ; OM danger player will befull forward Adam Acreman who loves a goal . Doggies had many good players in the seconds and changes will be made to their side . OM after beating Parade will be anxious to add the Doggies to their list, however they have a great home advantage (especially with all their learned supporters) ; form should see me pick OM, however big ruckman Way ne Ca re y has the key to this match -!ast chance - St Bernards by 11 points. Old Paradians at home to University Blacks should prove to be an interesting match . Last week OP coach Mick Mulhavill found out all about Amateur football (was he out-coached?) . University Blacks beat no one in Old Brighton last week although their victory was the right tonic for Students Coach Steve Cerni . Parade are very hard to beat at home and for this reason I'm going for Parade to take the honours by 5 points in a close one ! The awesome Old Trinity playing on their new gou nd at Timber Ridge will be far too strong for Old Brighton who have been devastated by the loss of key players . Trinity, the early favourites for promotion, were very classy last week and should have no problems in beating Brighton . Old Trinity by 39 points.

FER R A R I FORMA L HIR E ORMOND, CITY, FRANKSTON, DANDENONG, MITCHAM, MOORABBIN AND PRESTON

The match of the round will be at Elsternwick Park between Old Xaverians and my old side Parkside . Xavs gave a workman like performance in beating the undermanned Kew last week ; Parkside on the other hand had player Dermot Dunn must be stopped (tagged); Parkside an impressive victory over St Bernards . Xavs gun hold the key to the game . Parkside have a verey good record magical three rovers Sedwick, PanJari, Vincitorio at Elsternwidk (No I!m nottalking aboutthe Tribunal) . U nder coach Bruce Ferguson Parkside are playing a running aggressive disciplined game. Xavs with their experience will be very hard to beat ; loyalty swings me to Parkside by 5 points . Kew aYhome to Banyule should be an interesting affair. Both sides were extremely disappointing last week ; which side can bounce back the better . Kew, with playing coach Richard James, are facing a long hard season if they lose this match . Banyule coach John Simpson was devastated by the lack of commitment by his players !astweek . Kew do not lack commitment, howeverthey are rebuilding theirteam . Banyule, after a good pre-season start have already rebuilt. Peter Adams will be back this week and along with Leigh Holt and David Mitchell are fine players . I'm sticking my neck out in tipping Banyule. Kew at home play tough physical football ; Banyule, now known for their toughness, will look to their experienced players for leadership - can they produce? Banyule in a'thriller by 5 points . REVIEW - ROUND 1 "The Accurate One" is a tongue-in-cheek nickname and I feel that last week's selections did plenty to justify this theory! 2 out of 5 means an accuracy of 40% (statistical analysis courtesy of Professor Keith Frearson of Monash University) and it looks like I could become the kiss of death . Whilst enhancing my limited mathematical skills, Keith (president at Monash) also filled me in on the Students' battle with Preston . It was a one-sided affair that left Preston coach Ma rtin de Bono bitterly disappointed, especially with the attitude and discipline of his players . Three reports meant Preston were often undermanned and th ey cou!d not match the fitness of the"Ashes" . Secretary Tony O'Connell admitted it was the worst Bullant performance he could recall . Monash were obviously pleased and Coach Brian Ford threw every football cliche in the book at me so I gatherthey are "not getting carried away", "taking it week by week" etc . Better players were Tony "Cowboy" Kiers, just ahead of Leigh Baring and Steve Zachiridis . Preston were best served by ruckman Jim Mouncey, Peter Yandell and Laurie Johnston . Caulfield pulled off what surely must be one of the greatest robberies of all time . I cannot reca!l such a finish in my many years of football observation . Fawkner jumped away early and it looked like being a convincing home ground victory when they led by 6 goals at half time. The Fawks "went to sleep" in the third quarter and at the lastchangethere was very little in it . Fawkner rallied in the last term to edge away from the determined "Fielders" and with 19 secondsto go!ed by 11 points . Not even the most fanciful writer would dare to pen a script that allowed Caulfield to kick 2 goals in 19 seconds . But that's what they did! (No wonder I only tipped 2 winners) . At Bulleen-Temp the Cobras showed why they won D Section last year in the first quarter to lead by 4 goals at 1/4 time. Things levelled out by half time as Bulleen-Temp made good use of the wind . The "premiership quarter" was a tense battle with the Stowers skipping clear by 6 goals (into the wind) and then the Bankers pegging them back. There was nothing in it at 314 time and perhaps experience saw the home side through . The Cobras made some costly errors and the 8 goal contribution of Steven Pace didn't help them much either ! Thomastown received a bit of a shock from Ivanhoe who played strong and aggressive footy to be one of thefew sidesto win out there in recent years. The first three quarters saw neither side giving an inch and the margins were under a goal at every change. The last quarter was a powerhouse display from Ivanhoe who kicked "about 8:12" to steam away to a 31 point victory ; despite the efforts tireless Thomastown ruck rover Steve "Sludge" Pa paioanou . The final game saw Whitefriars too good on the day for St Kilda CBOC. The Friars skipped clear early and at one stage in the second quarter led 13 goals to 4 . From there things were fairly even but the damage had been well and truly done. Whitefriars sounded a clear warning to the other sides in C section that their pace and style of play will be no walkover. The Saints have a!ot of new players on the list and it may take them a!itt!e while to

PREVIEW - ROUND 2 Monash Blues are at home to Bullen-Temp. The 2 sides have come down from B section and were both winners last week. I don't believe Monash can be as good as last round's scores indicated but I think they'll sneak this one off Bulleen-Temp in a c!ose one . The Banks Combine unfurl theirflag in front of next door neighbours Caulfield at Albert Park. I'm going for the Cobras (unless Caulfield kick 5 goals in 30 seconds) to register their first C grade win . Fawkner head to Ivanhoe . This will be a very interesting match and also a close one . Fawkner deserve some luck after last week so I'll tip Ivanhoe and see if the kiss of death works!! Whitefriars will beat Preston, who will be out to salvage some pride, but will find the Friars style similar to that of Monash . Finally, it's the Saints to beat Thomastown . Neither side has a home ground advantage - in fact players from both teams could get lost trying to find the ground ! SELECTIONS : Monash The Cobras Ivanhoe Whitefriars The Saints PRESS CORRESPONDENTS - Give your club a say by rining 571 8121 Sunday afternoons and/or evenings . FINAL SELECTION - Even if I can't tip a winner - Amateur Football wil be the winner.

SECTION by Peter Lemon

Thanks to John Sist of Glenhuntly who was the only Press Correspondent to contact me by the miaaay Monday deadline. (Indeed, AJAX are in danger of having the Thomas Brain Trophy for Consistency in Reporting, which they won in E Section last year, repossessed .) How anyone expects me to write this column on a Monday night after the Presidents' and Secretaries' Dinner and four glasses of light-ale I do not know ! No huge winning margins last week seem to confirm my thoughts that the section will be very even - and a tipster's nightmare, despite the Brilliant Start . St Bedes were the only winners away when they took the game against Melbourne High by 10 points and this week I think they will make it two in a row by downing Glenhuntly, but only just. The Hunters have the misfortune to start with two away games and, although their great 4th quarter last week will give them a!ot of heart, I think the Bedas at home will be just too strong . Best for the Hunters were Timms on the wing, "Horse" Bateman with some good work on the forward line, and Mick Smith . The game is reported to have been of a good C Section standard . The Rovers, losers by just 5 points in the closest clash of the day, will no longer be underdone. They came back strongly against Old Camberwell aftertrailing by six goa!s and I expect that that and the home ground advantage will see M HSOB on the receiving end again, despite High's great comeback effort last week . They trailed by nine goals at the main break after Beasley of St Bedes had dominated the ruck, but a sensational 3rd quarter with Jason Bamert kicking 5 had them within 3 points early in the last before St Bedes steadied . Other good players for High were Stu Harris on the half-back flank, and first-gamer Ben Glover at full back . Old Ivanhoe took the honours with the biggest win, and I've even found out they had four of their better first players out . (Cheque book journalism and all that .) The game was close until 3/4 time . Their clash today is against traditional rivals St Kevins, at one of the SKOB's home grounds . SKOBs will sti!l be smarting from last week: a 4 point lead at the 20 minute mark of the last was followed by a six goal burst from AJAX . Best players for St Kevins were backmen McNair, Mark McKaige (he's the one kindly sent in this information) and Hegarty. (Mark adivses that the boys love to see their names in print : not to worry, Mark, they'll be printing the team lists in this magazine in a couple of weeks .) La Trobe kicked a pretty respectable 15 goals but the opposition managed more . Today on the!arge Uni ground I expect them to give the OGs a real run for their money . I've yet to summon up the courage to pick against Old Geelong, but it can be pointed out that Old Geelong's 13 goals was the lowest number of goals kicked by any winning team in Sections A to F (in case anyone's having a trivia night) ; they seemed to be cruising at 3/4 time, but someone threw a parachute out the back in the last term and everything ground to a halt . The final game sees AJAX at home again, and again I'!l give them the nod, this time against Old Camberwell . The Jackers finished strongly last week, and encouraged by their first-up win in the section, and the tipster's fallback - home ground advantage - I'!l go for them again . And sothe ba!l has been bounced and the 1991 season, after long pre-seasons, is up and running . The opening round produced no real surprises with Williamstown and M azenod having percentage boosting victories while Doveton again showed that they will be thereabouts when, with everything against them, sti!l managed to defeat the Bells. REVIEW - ROUND 1 where the Noddies celebrated the opening of their new rooms The Bulls did not enjoy the trip to Columbia in style with a mammoth victory . President, M ark Grady, who so impressed with the club's 5 wins for the day that he announced his engagement to the lovely Pauline . Big RAick O'Hara started everything from the centre bounces, and Don Barker an armchair ride with first use of the ball, while Sam the M an also excelled giving Nick Kendall in hisfirst game. Bulleen at!east never gave in and had great contributors in Moran and Thompson, while Har ry who is due to retire!! now needs an endorsed licence for his knee brace . In a very fast and skilful game on an uneven surface the Doves led all day and despite inaccurate kicking and a third quarter revival from St Mary's managed to record a very comfortable and pleasing 29 point victory . One of their most consistent players of the past years, Burgo Burgess, was in great form and was indeed an excellent focal point while Sticks Giddens and Campbell led a very miserly backline. I don't think Gary Connolly will be too disappointed with the Bells' pe rformance as they are notoriously slow starters . The Westies with 8 new players in their senior side just played the better football than the OEGs and with a little bit more run in their legs just ran out winners . Evergreen Steve "Ocker" Fyffe, after a nightmare three quarters on the dangerous Dudderidge, ruck-roved for the entire final quarter and kicked 2 match winning goals, his first since 1987, not bad for a 34 year old . J.P. Traynor, with 5 goals, was a dangerous forward for the vicitors, who also had good players in Peter "Jesse" James, Sam Bargiamedis and Tommy Johnstone . North Brunsw i ck and Powerhouse turned on a very entertaining game with the Northie's coming home the better to the tune of 46 points thus confirming themselves as one of the early favourites although Ron "Lippy" Lippold was not that disappointed with his club's performance as they played poorly but were still in the game with some 10 minutes to go. Big Vinnie, Li tt le Vinnie and Perko played fine games for North as did Big Joe Boudoloh, whose goal storming through CHF on the run, was a sight to behold . House had a good players in Nick Trouff, Mark Hansen and Billy Dodd . Brunswick and Aquinas played another even game until the last 15 minutes when the Wicks proved steadier andfitterto record an important victory first up . The Aq uinas old brigade of Grierson, Vankonkhoven, and Whalen were yet again among their better players . The boys, from over the Westgate certainly stamped their mark on E-Street with an enormous victory over the hapless St Andrews. The high marking and physical strength of Willy and their ability to exploit their own ground proved too much for the Saints, who appear to be undermanned, but players of the calibre of Burns, Ford and Smith kept trying all day against overwhelming odds . PREVIEW - ROUND 2 The match of the round is at Doveton where the home side eagerly await the side from the west . Both sides are we!! matched physically, both are skilful but if there is to be an advantage it is the extra height of Williamstown which just tips the scales in their favour. Even at De Chene, Powerhouse will today prove too strong for the struggling Saints who will undoubtedly improve as the season progresses . On a well grassed surface the Westies make the!ong trek outto Aquinas. West hope to improve their consistency this year, and while not having everything their own way will bring home the bacon . Even at Old Essendon, the Noddies will have too much strength and depth for the home side and should register another valuable victory. St Mary's and North Brunswick should also be another beauty . No rt h were good last week while the Bells are still not at the top of their form . Home ground advantage sti!l means a!ot these days so for this reason alone I'1l stick with the home side. Brunswick should continue on their winning way over Bulleen who will persevere and give the Wicks some anxious moments. SELECTIONS : Williamstown Powerhouse West Brunswick Mazenod St Mary's Brunswick Congratulations to Peter "General" Fox of No rt h Brusnwick on his Certificate of Merit Award on Monday night, a well deserved award to a staunch clubman . F TROOP by Peter Hill e

Have become embroiled in a Snappy Tom style pre-selection battle with Clarence who claims that the tipping competition starts this week . The first round gave me an 80% accuracy return and now he wants to change the rules. Ah well such is the lot of the humble tipster . I might get the ubiquitous Munnersto have a quiet one in Clarence's shelly pink . REVIEW The Brewers began their resurrection with a convincing win over a depleted Elitist combination . Younger Brewer recruits were particularly impressive in afine team performance. Similarly, Dame Edna reports that young Elitists showed the wayforthe visitors . The Dame also reports a proposed "Change of Sex" party tonight - Boycey Ace of Spies is expected to front as Mats Hari . The Socialists also got off to a sound if somewhat inaccurate start by recording a ten goal margin over new chums the Shamrocks. Attractive Shamrock colleens Megan and Jenny won the heart of this columnist by slipping `him the winning ticket in the Irish Sweepstakes drawn at the recently renovated clubrooms on the shores of Galway Bay. I'm hoping to do just as well when the Sham ro cks draw their Grand Raffle tomorrow. I missed out on the Poets but I wasn't surprised to see this dark horse get up against the Botanists. Beaker reports that the win was inspired by new Poet Laurette Mick Bourke and his predecessor Gino Caspari . Botanist reporter "The Empe ror" nearly missed the mail but reports that the loss was balanced by the thrill of unfurling last year's premiership flag . The Backyard Boys had an absolute thriller against the Sailors with thousands of Flash Phil's VIPs straining to watch from the confines of amateur headquarters . Seventeen goals in the last quarter finally saw the games last kick giving the Backyard Boys the lead for the first time in the match . Both sides should be quite competitive this season with Backyard Boss Cocky Bustling Bill Bell saying that the numbers at training have caused him to triple his bar runs .

SS CÂŽ SI'ONDEN'I'S N1 ICE All A to F and Under 19 home teams must phone Nancy MctTaggart (528 3319/528 2471) before 5pm each Saturday afternoon with final scores only . All A and B section home teams must then phone Norm Nugent ( 467 2857) before 5 .30pm each Saturday afternoon with both teams goalkickers and six best players for the day. When listing 6 best players indicate Christian name, Surname and then in brackets playing position .

A and B Section teams playing in a Sunday Elsternwick Park feature game must phone Norm immediately from Elsternwick Park . All G section and Reserve section home teams must phone

Ron Hally (379 8171) before 3p m each Saturday afternoon with final scores only . Black lists will be published regularly of clubs tardy in meeting these requirements and clubs will be fined accordingly .

The Stationmasters despite steady improvement from last season were still outgunned by early premiership favourite Zedders . The Zedders had more shots forqoal than some teams have in a month and the Politburo Chief parachuted out of a plane to kick 13 goals in the ressies - Getta was still crying about it at the Southern Cross nosh up on Monday. What a week the lad has had - Media Launch on Wednesday, disco on Saturday and still time to take care of Ivanhoe's Mistre ss of the Dark and the Checkout Chick f ro m Woolies. Even the Villain can't hack the pace . BEST PLAYER S B rewers Pivot Rick Daniels, defender Ben Dunshea and ruck rover G re g Skene Botanists Ruckman Ivan Buul, and defenders Dickie Dean and Ian Cooksey Zedders Defender Manny Nicolosi, winger Rick McDonald and veteran Michael Seitz Sham rocks Scrummer Peter Bar ry, defender Ben Piper and forward Paul Murphy Sailors Elitists Rover Peter McLean, defender Mick Grant and winger David Watt Socialists Centre Shane Ryles, defender G reg Cook and ruckman Frankie Gosdchan Backyard Boys Alby Contin and Ma ry Farringto n Young Poets' Society Ruck Mick Bourke, ruck rover Ivan Bogatic and winger Gino Caspari Stationmasters Ruck rover Rob Sutherland, forward Dave Jiggins and ruck Mick Wa rton MILESTONES Congratulations from F-Troop to Backyard Boy Robert Grandemange on reaching his ton and to Socialist Mick Urban on achieving his 50th game last week . SOCIAL NOTES All the big names will be at Rathmines tonight when Bucko and the Stationmasters go fancy dress . There's also a talent quest so the Socialists are going dressed as footballers . Imagine what Johnny Aggro, the Pieman, Chopper, Thunger, Frother and The Face might choose. We'II publish photographs next week . COMPETITION Match up the F-Troop nicknames below with the teams who have recently played F-Troop . Fax entries to Peter Hille (377 8250) on Monday. First correct entry wins dinnerfortwo to value of $60 . Westgate Warriors, Footrot Flat Boys, Students, Artists, Banjos, Undertakers, Doves, Noddies, Bells . PREVIEW The Young Poets Society, flushed with a first up win may come back to earth after atough fight with the Zedders whose experience should see them win by about 5 twins . The Stationmasters are hosts to the Socialists who should prove a little too advanced in preparation for Bucko's boys and win by a half dee . The Sailors, unlucky last week, should regroup sufficiently to roll the Sham rocks at Reg Ansett Oval . The Shamrocks will be competitive but are likely to fall a few lans short this week . The B rewsters have another game at home and should be too quick and skilful for the strongly built Botanists . B rewers by about 8 twins . The Elitists will need to win at home but I fancy the Backyard Boys to sneak home again before the transexual rites begin .

G & H SECTIONS by Norm -Nugent

REVIEW OF ROUND 1 - APRIL 6 G NORT H The only close result in this section was the two point victory by newcomer Abanvale over the consistent Bulleen Templestowe. All other results were clear cut despite some not being the way I forecast. Old Scotch showed early season form to account for North Old Boys by sixty five points . Old Xaverians showed themselves to be a better team than the newly formed Old Paradian line up. The Xaverians won by forty nine points despite the efforts of Ross Hennensen, Paul Healy and Tony Villanti . As predicted Chirnside Park opened the season with a win over Marcellin . However not even a super optimist would have guessed their winning margin of one hundred and thirty nine points. Inaccurate kicking by Collegians sawthem go down bythirty pointsto St Bernards after an evenly contested game. Newcomers Westborne Grammar failed by sixty nine points against the seasoned performers Kew whilst Therry vindicated my selection with a fifty seven point victory over an inaccurate Footscray Institute. Although Eltham defeated the newly formed Banyule team by eighty seven points my representative told me it was a physically hard game in which ruckman Paul Sinclair, rover David Thorsen and the ruck roving Tucker Brothers did best for the 'Turtles'. G SOUTH Bloods gave warning to all sides that once again they will be a force when they crushed St Kevins by one hundred and twenty three points . St Kevins despite the Head of the River, appear to be only a shell of their side

Salle gave another insight into the awesome strength of their club when they accounted of earlier seasons . De La defeated Kontias North - Caulfield who despite their changed for:Gienhuntly by ninety three points . Mazenod momenclature, still haven't found an accurate forward . Old Haileybu ry defeated Old Melburnians by fourteen pointsdue in part to the Melburnians inaccurate shooting for goal . Monash Whites proved far too strong for newcomer AJAX who went down by eightythree points . Another newcomer St John's OC showed their potential when they defeated last season's finalists CBC St Kilda by twelve points . The newly formed Monash Gry phons who were seeki ng players last week, must have recruited sagaciously because they proved too strong for an inaccurate Old Geelong who went down by 'twenty eight points . PREVIEW OF GAMES TO BE PLAYED APRIL 13 - ROUND 2 G NORT H Old Xaverians should be largely untroubled to defeat Footscray institute whom they haven't played for many seasons. Eltham make the long journey to Albe rt Park where they should take the pointsfrom Collegians . Ther ry at home should be able to defeat Bulleen Templestowe although I make this prediction without much confidence because of my track record with Therry . A good standard game should be played at Albanvale when Kew make the long journey west . The change to routine could upset Kew and at home I elect Albanvale to cause the first surprise of the seson . Marcellin must improve on last week's form if they are to cause any worry to St Bernards . I select St Be rnards to win well. Old Pa radians await Chirnside Park who come to the game confident of victory . Even at Bundaora I favour Chirnside Park largely because the Paradian side needs more time to develop its teamwork . I select Old Westbourne to win its first VAFA match against No rt h Old Boys who disappointed last against Banyule whose form last week revealed the week : In a similar vein I select Old Scotch to take the points players need to become more accustomed to each other . G SOUT H Winning form is good form so I expect AJAX to defeat Glenhuntly and Bloods to easily account for Glenhuntly. Old Haileybu ry travel to Como to meet the Old Geelong side who went down last week . I believe Haileybu ry will win the game but I am not nearly so sure of the Old Melburnians - CBC St Kilda result . St Kilda went down last week as did OMs and as I have to predict I select CBC St Kilda . A good standard match should be played between Mazenod and Monash Whites. As both sides won last week, selecting the winner is a hard task . At home I favour Mazenod . St Kevins will be hoping for a favourable result against Kontias North Caulfield whom I select to win . Today could be the day the "Magpies" improve their goalkicking as they seek victory over the hapless St Kevins. Two of the last week's winners St Johns and De La Salle meet at Dandenong . On results last week I must select De La Salle.

• Well done to all our new umpi res who stepped out for the first time last weekend . With that `nervous one" now under the belt, it should be 'all systems go' to carry on in a confident, proficient and productive manner. • Congratulations to Jamie Kvins, Heath Little and Wayne Binch for embarking on AFL ca reers this season . These 'former' Amateur umps certainly have the potential to be successful at his level . it was all systems go last Friday night as the Permit Committee worked long and hard processing as many permits as possible on this now traditional busy last night before the start of the season . The sight of Messrs Naughton, Miles, Wilson, Lyon, Bestow, Evans and Chairman Langford-Jones balancing pizza, pen, paper and telephone was a sight indeed . From this week on permits not at Elsternwick Park by Wednesday nights will not be looked at and these player s must not be p!ayed. Teiepone mailbox got off to a rusty start last Saturday evening when a central computer jam didn't allow your 'Talking Football' editor to load all scores by 6 .30 pm . Expert opinion assures me the Mailbox should be fine for the rest of the season . Last week's scores finally got loaded at 5 .15 am Sunday morning ! Some late news regarding draw changes caused by sides withdrawing at the eleventh hour . U19 NORTH - The withdrawal of Kew means that each side previously drawn by play Kew now has a bye . Anseft Austrsill8. I had reason to ca!l the home of an official who obviously shares house with at least one Cats supporter . The answering machine which greeted my call snapped that "No-one's here! And No-one's answering the phone till Ablett's back!" Lucky the matter wasn't urgent - I'1 l call again next year . It had been hoped to instal a new set of goalposts at Elsternwick Park this year with real tradition by gaining the wooden MCG posts which have been lying in storage since the installation of the slimmer aluminium poles of a couple of years ago . On inspection however parts of these had rotten away, so we had them cut and trimmed and now a part of great sporting history stands on the footy oval of nearby Elsternwick Primary School . **~ Former VAFA General Manager Peter French heads off to London shortly for asix month appointment on behal f of the Melbourne Cricket Club to head up planning for the 1992 World Cup . COACHES NIGHT On Monday March 25th at The Park 120 Senior, Reserve and U19 Coaches attended a very informative Coaches night with the highlight being atalk by Kevin Sheehan, the Genera! WOOL, THE W CHOIC E NATURALLY7

Andrew Baxter and Scott Boot hey in Old Haileybury and Haileybury College Football jumpers tivith Jo Wilson

sporting her supporters jumper.

Wherever the game is played, teams are taking to the field in approved woolblendmark jumpers . Wool is a natural favourite of players and property stewards alike . Because the fit and comfort that the players appreciate lasts week after week even after repeated washings . Aussie rules jumpers for both players and supporters are made in Australia using Australian wool . VAFA jumpers are knitted in Melbourne by Hugh Lyon Knitwear

to Australian Wool Corporation specifications . Ask your Purchasing Officer to give them a call and discover the long term economics of a n investment in wool . Or for further information, contact Mr. Dougal Pleasance at the Australian Wool Corporation on (03) 3419111 .
