EDITORIAL by Phil Steven s

Good afternoon football followers , Whilst most of our clubs have concluded activities for 1991 and those who are still involved in finals focus on these important few weeks, planning in many areas is very much underway particularly in regards to the celebrations commemorating the VAFA's Centenary Year 1992 . Club administrators are asked as well to give serious thought to the short term future and the long term future of Amateur football and if they, or a small working party from within a particular club, can work on a submission to be presented to me at Elsternwick Park between mid to end October, the submission can then be tabled and discussed at the November Seminar . From these discussions, recommendations are made to the first Members Meeting (1992), ratified and put into operation for that season . I have spent time recently reading some very interesting early submissions concerning the future direction of G Section football as well as new suggestions for the new reinstatement guidelines (keeping in mind that existing guidelines are going to becompletely rewritten to complement the newAFL National Structure andthe repercussions of associated changes) . I urge clubs to give important matters attention now - it will be too late after the event to seek to change them . A suggested time-line is then as follows : Mid October : Submissions in to General Manager (Elsternwick Park ) Mid to end October : Clubs are circularised advising of submissions received and general thrust of each submission - will enable clubs to express support for, suggest amendments etc . Mid November : Executive Seminar. Early 1992 : Ratification and implementation of recommendations . Finally, today I have presented a display of today's combatants showing 'head to head' performances from earlier meetings this year. Have a great day Phil Stevens

FIRST SEMI FINAL - REVIEW were bundled out in the first semi final After a dramatic dash to make third spot in the final round Ormond Old Scotch team last Sunday at Amateur Headquarters . comprehensively by anto impressive The game promised be of a high standard given the unusual absence of wind and an almost perfect day . Past years have seen strong northerly wind conditions prevailing in September but this was not the for football talent . Ormond's case on the opening day of this year's A Grade final series . Both teams boasted an array of reserve side, who played successfully in the curtain raiser, displayed some very experienced senior players suggesting . The game opened at a frenetic pace with both teams that indeed the senior side would be of a very high quality seemed to win more of the important centre running very hard at the ball and shirking no physical contests . Scotch . The match-up of Victorian State skipper defence was under constant threat and Ormond's square possessions was an interesting tussle . at HB with All-Australian M att Brown at HF for Ormond Rob Fuller separated Nothing the two teams throughout the first quarter - the margin at quarter time being 4 points in . The pace continued in the second quarter with each side playing well and each Ormond Ormond's favour, 5.4 to 4 .6 forward set-up of Rohan Aujard at goaI was responded to by a successful forward thrust by Scotch . Scotch's the Ormond defenders. At the other end, was proving a handful for M illar Andrew CHF, Mark Brady at FF and in his wake as he gathered a loose ball and ran with one bounce a brilliant burst of pace by Matt Brown left Fuller Ormond led by a narrow 2 points and one felt they should . At half time Ormond to kick an important goal for . have made more of their opportunities The first half had been so close with no more than two goals separating the sides at any given moment that I felt if one side could establish a three goal or better lead throughout the third term the game could well be won . This was to be the case but perhaps not by the side most people had come to expect to perform in this vital quarter vast finals experience it was some small surprise well in game-winning 3rd quarters of finals . Given Ormond's clearly asserted an advantage by playing a brilliant third quarter where they out-ran and out-marked that Scotch Ormond defence, usually so resolute, made a number of the Ormond side . Under considerable pressure the . Poor kicking from defence inevitably found a Scotch player costly errors that Scotch players capitalized upon and ominous signs were becoming apparent . restricting Ormond to 2 .1, to lead and kicked 6 .5 for the quarter, Scotch players teamed impressively together coach Peter Sherwen talked quietly to his Scotch . A very composed at three quarter time by a handy 26 points players and reminded them that they had previously been in match winning positions at three quarter time on a number of occasions throughout the season but had not completed the task by playing out the final quarter . He asked them to think about those previous lost opportunities and howthey would change to their maximum effort coach Michael McCarthy in his debut year faced the that situation in this important do or die match . Ormond final quarter realizing that his players were not playing well and would need to call on their wonderful reserves Ormond style of finals football . of character that had previously, for many years, characterized the directives and applied tremendous pressure The Scotch players responded impressively to coach Sherwen's . A number of attempts to bring the ball down defence who valiantly tried to stem the onslaught to the Ormond clearly held sway. the field from defence broke down across the centre of the ground where Scotch success continued to be too mobile for his opponent and played an important role in the Scotch Rohan Aujard in this final stanza kicking afurther 6 .2 whilst Ormond Ormond Scotch ground . story kicking five goals forthe game scoreboard by Scotch could only respond with one solitary goal . The entire second half was dominated on the . .1 and ran out comfortable winners by 58 points .7 to Ormond's 3 as they kicked 12 Duncan McCall who at CHB controlled the air and rebounded a number of Ormond Scotch's best player was was a surprise selection in the key defence post having spent most of his seniorRichard career . McCall forward moves . this vital spot as a forward . He completely eclipsed the three CHF players that Ormond tried to no avail. in Gavin Eagle (RR), Steve Hunter in a BP gave enormous service to the Scotch club Hume at HBF and Cameron Keipert (RR) were 3 Scotch players who provided the running advantage which Ormond Reddish (C) and Tom leading the side in his first final as acting Captain was a were unable to counter. For Ormond Andrew Jobling very courageous and determined winger, continuing to play on despite a very heavy knock to the face early in most effective forward kicking added badly needed pace and was clearly Ormond's the game . Matt Brown (HF) Anthony Grace (BP) is any drive and 4 goals. Brett Connell (RR) was one of the few on-ballers that provided . Two highlights of the game were the spectacular a young player who has a wonderful amateur future ahead of him high marks of Scotch's Ed Allen and Ormond's Matt Brown . decisively in the second half to deservedly win

Ormond In summary, Scotch were too quick and out-marked . On theform they displayed their first finals game since 1978 and will look forward to the preliminary final encounter potential strengths and showing none of a lack of finals experience . all of Ormond's in this game in countering . Bernie who watched this game with great interest they will have given justifiable concerns to De La or North pens would have been busy taking notes on how to counter this enthusiastic and Dunn's and Robert Hyde's skiiled Scotch combination . - nnTtaall ER 1991

SECOND SEMI-FINAL - PREVIEW ( Sunday, September 8th) The all important easy path to the Grand Final awaits the winner of this fascinating clash of styles and I suspect the winning side will heave an extra sigh of relief forthe bonus of not having to measure up to Scotch in the Preliminary . North come intothis game deserved favourites having accounted for De La on both meetings sofarthis season . In fact, some attention had swung away from North's impressive season with the drama of the last minute dash by Ormond and Scotch to gain finals berths at the last gasp. Having won 15 games and one draw North have completed the home and away season clearly on top . De La, although in second place, have 11 wins to their credit in a season characterized by some very inconsistent form . Bernie Dunn and his match committee know only too well that a day similar in conditions to the first semi would give North a definitive advantage with their marking strength and foot passing skill . To suit the De La running style the conditions would need to be windy, but then again, that has become a common feature of September at EP. Key players for N orth include Steve M oloney, who has played mainly in defence since his return to the Club mid season . His great kicking skill launches attacks from the HB line and De La will need to counter his effectiveness . Proven State player Bruno Conti along with Paul Booth, Tony Egan and promising yn :ng Luke Boyle are players that will cause the De La brains trust some long hours in preparation . Big man C' i.. ren Martin is playing well at the right time and will be a formidable opponent for either Pat O'Callaghan or Andrew Ronchi . An important player for De la is Peter Rennie who recently returned from injury and gives stability to the HB line of the Ds and M ick Hegan is an attacking B R Much responsibility will fall on the shoulders of De La rover Brett Mahoney and centreman Roger Prezens. Pat Mannix at FF has kicked 17 goals in his past two games and is obviously in tremendous form . De La will be looking for acontinuation of thatform if they are to advanceto the GF . On the wings Chunky Campbell and Andrew Mackintosh are tremendous competitors and give a lot of drive for the De La style of play. It should be a great tussle between two traditional rivals . The week's rest will have freshened up the players' attitudes and the prospect of playing off for the "big one" should be motivation enough to extract their possible performances . I'm going with N orth as they have done little wrong this year and have certainly improved significantly from 1990. De La is capable of upsetting any side when their game is on but their inconsistency causes some doubts about their ability to handle the inevitable pressure a Finals game can bring . Still, they manage to surprise most of their critics, especially when they are the underdog and the club itself has wonderful pride and character . These qualities have brought it through on many previous occasions . Man for man North have clearly an advantage in talent but so often the most talented side individually fails against a more committed team approach . Bernie Dunn's best homework will be needed going into this aame but I think Robert Hyde has the answers to win the 2nd Semi .

REVIEW - SECO N D SEMI FI N A L Bulleen-Temp . and Whitefriars battled it out for the second time in a row at a reasonably good Brunswick Oval . Puddles lay across the centre square and a slight breeze favoured the end to which Bulleen first kicked . It was more than the breeze that gave the Stowers a 20 point lead at the first change . The Friars blew a number of chances up forward through indirect play and inaccuracy . Bulleen-Temp. moved the ball better early and this allowed a couple of easy goals for Pace . Disposal from both sides was worse than expected early . In the second term Whitefriars began to hit the ball harder and use more run and handball . From then on they seemed clearly the better side but despite their goal kicking power in Pratt, Lane and Houston could only slowly bridge the gap . By 3/4 time the Friars were a point in front but the Sto wers kicked the first goal of the last. It seemed justice would not be done (Whitefriars were the better side on the day) until Carbone stole the ball upforward and goaled . In the end it was Whitefriars by 10 points, A top effort by the club to move to B Grade from humble beginnings a few years ago. Best for the winners were Gibbons, Carbone, McAuliffe and Coghlan . Reidy showed pace and poise on a wing and Houston was useful at centre half forward . For the Stowers Wotherspoon was a consistent performer and some support came from M atthews and, at times, Driver and Harvey. PREVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINA L Another good match can be expected at the Harry Trott today . I feel M onash Blues will win this match and this prediction is based mainly on recent form . Monash have won their last 8 matches since losing to BulleenTemp. nearly 3 months ago. Since then the Ashes side has got better with the inclusion of several key players who had been missing at the last contest . Monash's last 3 winning margins add to 242 points . That's good form in anyone's judgement! On the other hand, I have watched Bulleen-Temp . in 2 of their last 3 encounters and have not been impressed . Some key players seem to be injured, others are down on form . They have fine players in George, Harvey, Wotherspoon, Driver and Pace but man for man I believe the depth at Monash could be the difference . Watch key players at M onash i n League B& F winner Sturgess and the likes of Barin g , Kiers, Kohler, Koop and Crampton . Yes it will be a good exhibition of C Grade football - and a fast and skilled game - with M onash to win by 25 points . ATTENTION : PET ER LEMO N You have the jump on me obviously . Perhaps we can discuss your blackmail attempt after the C Section grand final at Elsternwick Park . I'll be easy to find that day I assure you!

D SECTION by Peter Lemon

Old Geelong bowed out of a less-than-successful finals series when Melbourne High went away in the final term to record a comfortable win . The OGs lacked the depth to cover the loss of Manton, and 4 other linch-pins, and although they held High right through 3 quarters, could not contain the brilliance of Comer and the big-man dominance of Adam Green as the game moved into its later stages . Too many frees given away through poor defence - what's new? - did nothing to aid OG's cause. Richard Wix, after playing just a handful of Reserves gamesduringthe home and awayseason for High became a highly telling factor in the second half, as did Clinton Young in across the centre line . Charlie Ross played another wonderful game for OG in defence, but too often when the ball came to ground atthe other end OG could do nothing, asthey largely paralleled St Bedes disappointing finish to last year's 1990 finals series . TODAY it is now a month since I last made an incorrect selection, yet today's task is anything but easy . Melbourn e High, with 9 wins straight, are going for their first senior flag since 1961 . AJAX, in their second consecutive grand final, know that there are few worse feelings than watching the other team line up to receive the winners' medals and premiership trophy. The 2 sides have 1 win each this season, although I somewhat discount High's victory 3 weeks ago, on the basis that AJAX then had nothing hanging on the outcome and they were able to rest players . Both teams are expected to go into today's game at close to full strength (providing High have recovered from their huge party last Saturday night), with the exception of,4J,0.X's 2 suspended players, whilst Dawson's hamstring must still be causing a little concern for High . The game will be played between 2 sides which are evenly matched ; AJAX's great strength is their runners, whilst High are definitely stronger in the big man department . To win this game, AJAX will have to nullify Bamert and Green whose strength up forward could be a telling factor, and they will undoubtedly have to use one of their better running players as a tag for Dean Comer. It will be interesting to see if the spectacular, high-leaping and sometimes prolific goal kicker, Goetz, is used in attack for the Jackers - Gordon is a dou r but more steady performer - but I suspect Goetz will in fact be given the job of looking after Green . Young and Dixon will give High good drive around the centre, and the return of rover Aitchison will also help, but I expect the likes of the Sheezels and Pats to at least break even, whilst AJAX can, as always, expect to gain enormous service from their captain, Klooger. Given good conditions, this game could be/should be a great spectacle . Melbourne High's overall performance against Old Ivanhoe 2 weeks ago was not that impressive ; their big men were kept fairly quiet for much of the game, whilst AJAX exhibited a quantum leap in their second semi final . The week's lay-off will see them fresh and raring to go, and they do have the benefit of the experience of last year's grand final behind them . Assuming coach Ritterman has plans to counter the big guys, I believe AJAX will take out the 1991 D Section Grand Final in a thriller. Reserves : Today's Grand Final will be a re-run of last year's, both as to the club's competing, and as to the manner they got there, and as to the result . St Kevins won comfortably last week, but against very ordinary opposition, and will today hit the wall, hard . M elbourne High have enormous depth and strength and will win this game by a substantial margin .

After a wasted year last year M azenod did themselves proud on Saturday by earning promotion to D Grade, congrats to Matt Johnston and his players and all associated with the club . Aquinas, although disappointed, can feel justly proud of themselves, they have been the year's big improvers and can go into 1992 with plenty of confidence . REVIE W The Nodders got the early lead and although the Bloods kept trying they could not peg them back . Despite the loss of Chris M urray, through injury, the defense led by Timmy Chilcott rallied and were almost inpenetrable all day. The Plodders' skills were to the fore all day as they put together their best performance for many weeks . Aquinas tried hard, were inaccurate, perhaps if some of their early shots had been goals it may have made a difference, but the pressure put on by Timmy, Peter Hall, Billy Leggett etc . just proved too much for the Bloods who were also let down a bit by their older legs . A great aerial display and hard work on the ball all over the ground earned Andrew Blackley best on the ground honours, well backed up by Howe, Connelly, Conroy and Smith . Forthe Bloods, McEvoy, Whitehead, Gommers and Tarulli all persisted very hard all day. RESSIES - A great all round team effort saw North Brunswick take the points over Willy and earn another shot at Mazenod this week . PREVIEW This should be a very even game between the seasons 2 best sides - Williamstown and Mazenod . The CYs have won all 3 encounters during the season but Mazenod have been getting closer on each occasion . Willy will miss M ark Cannon and N odders will miss Peter Hall if they are ruled out . The Nods have a very good history in big games like Grand Finals, while the Warriors should have learnt plenty from their shock loss last year . In what will be a great Grand Final I'll stick with Willy even though they don't like travelling . RESSIES- M azenod have been thetop side all year and will win today, although North will not go down without a fight as is the trademark of all their sides . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS : I know it will be hard with all the celebrating etc ., etc ., but let's finish the year on a bright note with a full report on the games. Don't forget Ph : 571 4808 or Fax : 569 8766 by 6pm M ondays. Many thanks to Denis Kelly from Aquinas for his excellent input during the season . Congratulations to the Backyard Boys on their rebound to E-Street in 1992 . The hard work of Bustling Bill, the Apostrophe, D .C., Lethal and Purc has been rewarded . The game followed a similar pattern to the semi against the Socialists with the Boys inaccurate early then turning on a brilliant burst in the third stanza to make the catch up task of the Brewers too difficult. The Brewers and Socialists have proved to be the best of the rest but well short of the teams who will fight for the FTroop Flag . Both Brewers and Socialists will be competitive in 1992 . In the Ressies, the Sham ro cks had a 13 twin victory over the Winkles to give the club a Grand Final berth in its first Amateur season . I also attended the VAFA Luncheon on Sunday and was impressed by the smooth organisation of the immaculate Munners and the wonderful football turned on by A Graders Old Scotch and Ormond . REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GA MES DIVISIO N 1 a repeat of last year's In first semi, Marcellin again ran over St Bernards in the second half to run out easy winners by almost 10 goals. The turning point in the game came with the switch of A .T. from the backline to full forward in the 3rd quarter. Despite the effects of the flu and some spirited heckling from Bernies' supporters, A .T. gave the Eagles a focal point and booted 4 for the quarter. Sexton, Darby and Shorthall - alias "Daicos" (what sort of game is that Scotty?) - all provided great drive around the ground whilst Wallis and M erton were pretty solid on the backline. For the Bernies, Ben Horn worked like a trojan all day and "Webby" and Raffle worked hard on the backline. "Stork" kicked a sixer ! DIVISION 2 N ORTH In the first semi, on a boggy Parkside ground, Therry had a 3rd quarter lapse to let Chirnside in after holding a4 goal break at 1/2 time . Therry's small brigade of Matt Fitzpatric k and Adrian Baker were their most consistent performers whilst Stanko booted 4 goals. Chirnside were best served by Romano and skipper Chris Gellert . The second semi saw,0.lbanvaie move into their 2nd successive grand final with a 39 point win over OT . The Cobras dominated the 1st half with 20 scoring shots to OT's 6 but inaccuracy prevented them from having the game in the bag . OT should be heartened by the fact that they virtually matched it with the Cobras in the 2nd half. Once again, Anthony Paddon was the key playerforthe Cobras ably supported by Dale Liddell and Andrew Leahy. "Getty' overcame his broken laces to boot 5 as did Simeon Lloyd for OTs whose best were Brimble, Roberto and Denby. DIVISION 2 SOUT H On a very wet Monash Oval Bedas were relieved to learn that they can win a close one getting home by a mere 3 points over a very desperate De La . Their 4 goal lead at 3/4 time seemed to be plenty, but De La fought back to get within 3 points and, amazingly, neither side was able to score during the final 8 minutes . Bedas' skipper, Kinsella and vice-captain, Flannery led all day and Zahra did a number of classy things even in the wet conditions . De La's best were Satchell, Taylor and Raju . In the 2nd semi, OMs repeated their performance of the previous week with another good win over 'Tones . One of the key performances was Simon Frasers in beating Darren M urphy and providing a consistent avenue to goal . Andrew Smith won in the centre and my " mate" Sneezers chipped in for 3 valuable goals . David Elam wasn't happy with OM 's lazy last quarter and will be looking for even better in the grand final . 'Tones were best served by winger Chris Raclin and Patto whilst Dave Campbell did a good job in the ruck bringing rover Andrew M arshall into the play. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES DIVISION 1 In another 1990 replay, De La meet Xavs in the second semi and I expect history will repeat itself with the D's moving into the grand final but recent injuries to David Dean and Simon Greeley will curb the D's effectiveness . Both teams have good key forwards . Makinson has kicked over the "ton" for De La whilst Paul Salter is nearly to a 100 for Xavs . Xavs will need a top effort from Hilbo who could be assigned the tough task of holding Dom Schuilling at CHF . Keyhoe is sure to provide plenty of drive for Xavs around the packs but he will be matched by Borgy and McCarthy who is fully fit again . Crowe will relish the space at Monash and will be a real thorn in Xavs side. I expect the D's will just get there in a high standard game . DIVISIO N 2 NORT H I will be seeing both Therry and OT for the first time today so my selection must be based on what I've heard and not what I've seen . These teams met 2 weeks ago at Therry where the Roys came from behind at 1/2 time, to get up by 2 goals . The Rays have since been strengthened by the return of Matt Fitzpatrick who was their best player last week . OT put in a good 2nd half against the Cobras last week and that should give them enough confidence to put in their best effort . However, I think Therry have proved their ability to win the important ones with their recent series of pressure victories to make the finals and should just get home today (and enjoy the slab I owe them from 2 weeks ago!) . DIVISIO N 2 SOUT H This preliminary final sees the matching of neighbours, Bedas and 'Tones who put on an epic game earlier in the year with 'Tones getting in by a point . After winning 17 straight 'Tones have slipped in the last 2 weeks in the mud to a more determined OM . Today's game won't be in the mud but Bedas will be as determined as OM have been . 'Tones need big games from ALL of their "guns" and need Stainforth back in the centre . FAurphy and Jones must both improve on last week, while Patto and Campbell are capable of an extra few per cent . Barr and Loos were 2 of Bedas' best last week as they have been all year and will be real headaches for 'Tones . I expect this game will be as tight as the earlier one this year with 'Tones again getting home by about a kick, but it will only happen if they go a lot harder than the last 2 weeks . It was with great alarm last Sunday at Elsternwick Park that patrons noticed the final 2 quarters of the A Section reserves match concluded at 16 and 18 minutes respectively . `Timekeepers should note that the following applies to Rese rve section matches: PL U S i'1 :.7 -_- ON (hence the 11 .30 start) A SECTION 4 x 25 minute quarters P LUS T 1 .ON (11 .45 start) B-F SECTION 4 x 20 minute quarters 4 x 25 minute quarters P L U 0_1 T C UNDER 19 Patrons will have noticed the advertisement elsewhere in "Amateur Footballer" declaring that Elsternwick Park has now been declared "The Park Without Bark" . Seriously, a couple of nasty incidents over the past couple of weeks involving dogs "terrorising" youngsters has forced the Executive to take this responsible stance . Visitors to Elsternwick Park this weekend will notice the newly erected signs at the main and back gates . Patrons are asked to co-operate and leave dogs at home while owners attend the football . Callers to Elsternwick Park may notice the dulcet tones of Ormond's All-Australian "goer" Brett Connell on the other end of the phone . Brett is spending time with the VAFA as part of the VicHealth Sponsorship helping organise Dental Health Services promotion programs in the lead up to the Grand Final weekend . With Brett's beloved' Monders" going down last weekend the little fella (minus his dog) will be seen at HQ more often this month on the other side of the fence . Clubs using rooms in finals belonging to other clubs are reminded of the need to leave these at the end of the day as clean and as clear of rubbish as when they arrived . Already one club has been invoiced heavily for the huge cleaning bill caused including some minor damage caused as F. result of having trudged off the field a losing side . It was with great sadness that the news of the death of Kelvin Shaw reached Elsternwick Park last Tuesday week . Kel, like all the Shaw boys, was a most respected and likeable person on and off the football field . Sympathies are extended to Kelvin's family, hisclubs- Ivanhoe and Old Carey and all those who were close to him . P. Stevens, General Manager

Personality Par s 150 AT ST BERNARDS Congratulations to Andre w Nathan for playing his 150th game on 24/8. Andrew's career commenced in 1983 in the U/19s who were premiers . In 1984 he won B&F in the U/19s . He started his senior football in 1985 and played in 1987 B Grade premiership, and won a best in finals trophy . Originally a speedy winger, Andrew now is playing great football on half-backflank . Son of amateur and St Bernard's "legend" Peter, Andrew continues a great family tradition by serving on the committee as Players Representative 1990-1 . Well done Andrew . Good luck in the finals . 100 GAMES TO N ORTH OLD BOYS' TONY CAHILL Congratulations from all at North Old Boys to Tony Cahill who today plays his 100th game for the club. Having commenced in ourjuniors in 1985, Tony played 16 U/19 games before progressing to the seniors and has since played all his games in the seniors . A very talented ruck-rover or half forward in his early years, Tony has now settled into the half-back flank as part of the tightest defence in A Grade Amateur football . Tony's appearances with North have been restricted in recent years due to injury and travel, however, 1991 is certai nly proving to be a good year for both Tony and the club . Let's hope we can win the big one Tony - a nice wedding present! Congratulations from all your friends at the club.

COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by Mike McArthur-Alen

A TRAINING NIGHT V-,71-1 JOHN NORTHEY AND TO, -' HAFE Y As a coach I have learnt a great deal from observing and listening to football coaches operating at the elite level . Often I attend and observe an AF L club's training . I take certain drills and routines back to my own club. At times I have adopted the exact training session I may have seen the night before at a league club. The players I coach, respond well when they realise they are doing the same training routines as say Carlton or Essendon . Recently I was able to witness first hand, training conducted by two of the great coaches, John Northey and Tom Hafey. Northey's training night with Melbourne was part of aAFCA coach education night . It was great to see other VAFA Coaches Association members in attendance . Hafey conducted training recently at my club (State/Commonwealth FC) . The night was terrific with training being very enthusiastic and educational . Aftertraining , Haley, along with David McKay, spoke to all players . NORTHEY'S TRAINING AND IDEA S The night was well attended by AFCA members and was most enlightning. Whilst Northey conducted training his assistant, Mark, Cross, explained the training routines . After training Northey spoke to us as a group . The following are some of his routines and thoughts :- before and after training all players go through an extensive warm up and cool down routine ; - at every training session the players initially do lanework, handballing and kicking over varied distances . This exercise has plenty of repetition and usually goes for fifteen minutes . Northey believes this is important because it allows each player to touch and use the ball approximately fifty times ; - all fit players wear the same attire at training . The injured players wear a different coloured jumper so they can be differentiated ; - Northey incorporates a certain portion in most training sessions to tackling and competitive work ; - the players who are unable, because of injury, to join in competitive work are still required to work hard . They are put through a session of sprinting and run throughs . Northey says this stops players from trying to fake injuries to get out of the important competitive work ; the training routines are as much match related as possible, e .g . whole ground exercise with Jackovich and Bennett leading from the goalsquare ; Melbourne trains three nights per week, normally Monday, Tuesday and Thursday . The Wednesday is an optional night . Monday and Tuesday are the longer, harder sessions with Thursday being a light skills night ; during the season Northey never trains for longer than 11/2 hours ; team meetings are held after training on Thursday and also on match days before the game ; any player that is omitted meets the match committee before it is made public and is given an explanation why, and what he needs to work on ; detailed individual and team reports are provided to the players on the Monday following a game . HAFEY'S TRAINING AN D IDEAS Hafey's enthusiasm for football and discipline to fitness is amazing . Even though he is over 50 years of age he still religiously runs, swims and exercises at 5 a.m . every morning . He hasn't missed a morning session in twenty-six years . The following are some of his routines and thoughts :- a proper warm up and cool down is compulsory at every training session ; - being a fitness fanatic himself, Haley demands the same commitment from all of his players ; - Hafey trains his teams almost every day of the week ; - tackling at training is a high priority with Hafey . He says it is not the technique that is vital but that it mentally trains footballers to tackle. If you do a skill enough, eventually it becomes natural ; - Hafey believes strongly in positive feedback to players, e .g . if you tell a team that they are the best tackling team in the competition they will eventually believe it and act accordingly ; Hafey emphasises that footballers should try and straighten up onto their natural side as often as possible . He says too often players make skill errors by not running their full distance and straightening up ; for a footballer and a football team to succeed they must have the 4 D's : Desire, Dedication, Discipline and Determination ; Hafey keeps his game plan assimple as possible . The main tactic in his game isto kickthe ball long with players running to the fall of the ball to help the team mate who is contesting or winning the ball ; Hafey is critical of coaches who are too opposition-conscious . He feels that teams play their best when they play their own natural game and do the things they are good at . Obviously Amateur teams cannot demand the same professionalism and commitment as the teams under Northey and Hafey. However, I'm sure we can adopt certain methods and ideas and practices of these two great football coaches to benefit our own situations . Yours in Football, Craig Jackson State/Commonwealth FC Coac h NB - In our inaugural year the VAFA Coaches Associaion has been very successul . President Mike McArthur-

Allen and the committee of Ken Bremner, Gary Connolly, John Keenan, Simon Meehan and John Simpson have worked diligently to promote our Association and football coaching . I'm sure the VAFA Coaches Association can continue as an effective organisation for many years to come . The Amateurs can only benefit. Yours Sincerely, Craig Jackson VAFA Coaches Assoc . Secretary

5 YEARS AGO - 1986 Collegians, 15 straight wins, were entitled to face the second semi with confidence but it was really a bad day for the Lions. Their very strong attack (they scored over 2000 points in home and home games) scored only 5 goals for the day ( 1, 1, 3, 1) to No rt h Old Boys' 11 . Final scores were 11 .11 to 5.9. Best were S. Hibbert, Hedley, Conti, Wright, Considine, Weir(North)and Newman, Williams, Bickford, Irvine, I . Herman, Wright (Collegians) . In the replay "B" first semi Fawkner were far too strong all day for Parkside, 17 .9 to 8.10 . Stars were Hoare, Kerslake, Hills (Fawk .) and Sturgess, M arsh, Freeman (P'side) . In the seocnd semi Old Paradians confirmed their right to top position with a 7 goal win over Old Xaverians, 22 .16 to 16.10. Parade were best served by Fahey, Nelson and Way, while Wilton, Summers and L . O'Sullivan were strong players for Old Xavs . Personafity Pars MILESTONES AT OLD GEELON G Old Geelong congratulates a number of players reaching their 50th in recent weeks . Bill Dowling (member last year's Res Prems), Craig Hollis (member 1988 and 1990 Res Prems), Cameron Slorach (member last years Res Prems), and Dom Coiaci (member last year's 1st Prem team) . Dom's 50th against Ajax a fortnight ago - unfortunately lasted but a few minutes before he received a very nasty gash tothe arm. We've got ourfingers crossed thatthis manof-a-thousand-words (most of them at the same time!) might be available to play this week. In addition, we expect another great contributor, Charlie Ross, to reach the 50 mark in this Sunday's semi-final . 50 GAMES AT DE LA Congratulations to John Tully who plays his 50th game this week for De LaSalle . After a promising stint in the Under 19s, Jack burst into the senior side in 1989 with some Ablett-like performances at full forward . His performances so enthused chairman of selectors, Tim Cooke, to say "He's the most exciting player we've had for 10 years!" John is also a State Gaelic Football representative so understandably his body suffers . He has had mixed success in Aussie Rules in the last 2 years but has bounced back at the righttime . His aerial talentswill beon display inthe2ndSemiFinalthisweek and 2 weeks later in the Grand Final . Don't miss it ! LEGEND RETIRES AT OLD C A REY John Hands "Solvol" has announced he is hanging up his famous No. 22 jumper after 129 games for Old Carey. Our popular "president", John is one of the legends around the club - there is no job which John has not done (and done well) at Old Carey - Reserves Coach, Committeeman, Social Club Leader, Press Officer, Marketing, Sponsorship - no wonder he's got a mantlepiece full of "Best Clubman" trophies!! Thanks "Handsie" for everything -any chance of you "doing a Melba" and lining up again in '92 ? ANSWER TO QUIZ : .
