Good afternoon football followers for the final time this season , This weekend sees the culmination of another great season of Amateur football - a season that administratively has been one of great change, and to the "team" in the office at Elsternwick Park I congratulate everyone for the magnificent contribution that has been made by each member of that "team" this year. The Executive, by creating another full-time position (Executive Officer), centred tasks previously performed by part-time employees at Elsternwick Park . This has been a most successful move by the Association and I congratulate Mike McArthur-Allen on his efforts in regard to sponsorship and servicing of our sponsors, completing his other numerous tasks and being a constant and consistent support to myself . Sue Anderson has once again worked her heart out forthe benefit of a smooth running organisation and I thank her once again . To all the other part-time workers who make the Association "tick" another big "well done" and I hope that you are all back in 1992 . To the four seniorteams that have reached this weekend's Grand Finals, well done and I won't make any selections I promise - the last time I tipped a side was in last year's B Section Final and my tip was beaten by over 100 points! Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this season and I hope that clubs who are envious of the successfu l sides they are seeing today, start to plan NOW to be more successful in the VAFA's Centenary Year of 1992 .

SI E 'I'' S MESSAGE
This weekend, the A, B and Junior Section 1 Grand Final signifies the finals of the 1991 Season, barring a draw, heaven forbid . It then allows most of us to reflect on either our achievements or failures during the past year, but being such a great game that football is, I am sure we will all be back, hopefully striving that bit harder next year. I congratulate those clubs that have either won a premiership or gained promotion to a higher grade next year and trust that those clubs that struggled on the field in 1991 will be back with that extra determination required to improve their position next year. Our association can look back to the season past, with pride and satisfaction, in observing that the competition as a whole, has continued to maintain the high level of competition and club administration for which we have become known . On behalf of the executive of the association, our thanks go to all VAFA Clubs, their officials, players and supporters for making 1991 such a great season . To the executive of the association, the staff consisting of General Manager Phil Stevens, Executive Officer Mike McArthur-Allen and Executive Assistant Sue Anderson and the many voluntary helpers, we also thank for a job well done. In spite of these difficult economic times, our sponsors have been magnificent to the extent that the total financial support afforded by these organisations has exceeded that of previous years . To acknowledge this fact, I ask that all amateur followers will continue to support our sponsors throughout the year . These sponsor firms are listed on the back of "The Amateur Footballer" . To the contributors of articles to this publication, we also sincerely thank and acknowledge the efforts of these people to make the publication as informative and entertaining as possible . Within the confines of cost and time, I am sure everyone would agree that "The Amateur Footballer" is an excellent publication . We all now look forward to 1992, our Centenary Year, which I am sure will be a great year for all of us to be involved . It will be a chance for all those who play and support amateur football, to show the football publi c of Victoria the strengths and virtues of the VAFA . So let us all strive to make 1992 a memorable year for the VAFA . David Scott Presiden t

PRELI M INARY FINAL - REVIEW The two questions raised as a result of the Semi Finals played in A Section were answered decisively at Amateur Headquarters in the third consecutive almost perfect day for football last Sunday . We now know just "How good is Scotch?" and answer is not good enough to go anyfurtherthis year. The remaining question "Can the season's top side North bounce back?" was answered in the best way possible . A definitive performance by the side who has occupied the top positon for most of the year . Coach Robert Hyde and his selectors gave a new look to the North combination by placing agile ruckman Darre n Martin at full forward thereby opening the game with their most experienced ruckman Paul Considine in the centre square. Other moves saw Tony Cahill brought f rom defence to the forward line to add strength, moving Bruno Conti from defence into the centre, and Tim Jones and Tony Egan were moved into defence and slotted in very well indeed . The new line up seemed to revitalise the North team as they bounced out in the first quarter and looked particularly sharp. Scotch lined up in a similar manner to their first Semi, and why not? It was a marvellous performance in that game and coaches rarely change winning formula . Scotch were first to strike with a goal to M ark Brady within the first 2 minutes and No rt h replied with a strong mark and goal to Tony Cahill . A second goal to Brady at the 6 minute mark and a further reply by North through Dar re n Martin and the score was 2 apiece and gave the suggestion of a terrific contest ahead . The over-exuberance of the youthful Scotch side gave rise to some errors and turnovers of the ball that proved costly in this crucial first quarter. A couple of physical skirmishes broke out and North with composure capitalised on the run of play . Scotch seemed to be second to the ball as North's pace around the packs through Stephen Moloney and Bruno Conti was beginning to tell . Darren Martin at full forward was proving a handful to the Scotch defence and by quarter time North led 7.1 to Scotch 2 .4 with Martin having kicked 4 goals and Steve M oloney 2 in this opening quarter. Both teams were playing with 17 men as each had had a player reported and sent from the field . Jones and Moloney had gathered a lot of possessions and Fuller for Scotch was a high kick gatherer. North opened the second term with the same high work rate and Conti goaled on the run whilst Martin kicked a further 2 before captain Rob Fuller swooped on a loose ball and cut through the North defence to kick a badly needed Scotch goal . Steve Brazil mobile at CH F was providing a vocal point for North and Martin was just too tall and too agile for his Scotch opponent adding a further goal before half time . A very sorry Scotch scoreboard of 4.6 at the long interval told the tale as No rt h had scooted away to 13 .7. Trailing by 9 goals at the half way point of the Preliminary Final Scotch required wholesale changes to their line up and indeed to the players' attitudes . Rohan Aujard was taken from a key forward post and given the job of curtailing the very effective forward for North, Dar ren Martin . M cCall went to CHF and Brady was given a run on the ball in an attempt to lift the flagging pace of the Scotch on-ball players . NOBs continued to dominate most aspects of play with long kicking and accurate handball and if there was ever any chance left for Scotch for 1991 it had to be in this quarter. North however had other ideas and continued to turn the screws a little tighter. Scotch failed to kick a goal, registering 4 points for the quarter while North kicked 6 .4 to put the contest beyond doubt by the final break . Leading by 91 points No rt h changed into the last quarter with their eyes firmly fixed on a Grand Final berth . The game had been very late starting with delays in the 2 earlier games and rain began to fall steadily throughout the final quarter to really dampen any spark of enthusiasm left in the Cardinals. In the greasy conditions the last quarter degenerated into a scramble. With North still clearly in the dominant position kicking 3 .9 and Scotch replying with 2 .3. The winning margin of 103 points clearly showed the difference between the 2 sides on the day . Scotch had no answer to curb the effectiveness of North's running game highlighted by Stephen Moloney, Bruno Conti and Tim Jones whilst bigman Dar re n Martin at full forward for the entire game kicked 9 telling goals and veteran Paul Considine in the ruck gave outstanding drive to the North effort . Scotch's best player was Mark Brady and captain Rob Fuller gave it his all . Cam Hunter at CH B had a great duel with Steve Brazil with honours even on the day . Scotch now bow out of the finals race but should be complimented on their performance and congratulations to coach Peter Sherwen on taking Scotch from a middle-of-the-road team for the past 13 years into their first finals series since 1978 . He has a young side that could well have learnt a lot from this drubbing of the hands of a very efficient and impressive North Old Boys team . This severe beating may become the fuel that the young Scotch team takes on board in 1992. GRAND FINAL - PREVIEW (Sunday, September 22nd ) No rt h have answered their critics in the best way and that is by showing all A Grade watchers that they are capable of destroying any side when their game is as switched on as it was last Sunday at EP . Their ability to regroup following a 49 point loss to De La Salle and to turn it about 7 days later into a 103 point victory over Scotch demonstrates that they have the character necessary to win the big game this week. But De La will have taken THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1991 1
note of the North restructuring and will have no doubt put some deep thought into the placement of their lineup to counter North's strengths displayed in the Preliminary Final . The psychological factor of finals football can swing very quickly and now the pressure is back upon De La . Any lost confidence has now been firmly restored by the North camp whilst De La would have sat and watched the awesome performance as it certainly has begun to cause some cracks in the De La confidence stakes. Had No rth won by only a narrow margin, De La would be still feeling very positive about their chances, but with such a decisive victory it can only produce significant concern in the minds of the De La players and match committee. We have been blessed with wonderful finals weather so far and after such a poor June, July and August then we are due for a good run of weather conditions . Let's hope this continues and A Section Grand Final day is one that gives both teams the opportunity to display their undoubted skills . Luck plays a part in any finals game but adverse weather enhances the luck factor too much . No rt h will be keen to play in any conditions ; De La would probably prefer it to be dry and possibly windy . De La's running game revolves around getting the ball to the deck and moving it very quickly by hand . This is where they cut N orth apart in the final darter 2 weeks ago . North will again rely on the marking power of Brazil and Ma rt in but still possess many fine players at ground level . Teams selections will be interesting and the first few minutes will be fascinating to watch the match-ups . With such a good game by Conti up the ground I feel he will be left in the centre, which is where he does his best work . He will meet a you ng player in excellent form in Roger P rezens . De La won well on both wings in their last encou nter with Chris Belleville and Andrew McIntosh playing well . On a ground as wide as EP it is vital to win across this line to provide the drive for forward opportunities . De La in the ruck with Andrew Ronchi and Pat O'Callaghan can probably wear down Paul Considine who gave a tremendous display last week . If De La curb Considine it will force N orth to bring M artin onto the ball and maybe robbing them of the forward power that he was last week. N OBs half forwards Luke Boyle and Owen Abrahams provided a real lift for the N orth forward set up and will need to play that well again in the GF . De La defence headed by the talented Peter Rennie will need to reduce the forward strike power of North whilst at the other end De La boasts a range of in-form goal kickers in Campbell, M annix, Green and the everdangerous Fraser. No rt h may regain the services of Paul Booth who is an important player for them in defence and Tribunal outcomes will have a profound influence on the North team following 2 reports in the Preliminary Final . Tim Jones in his new role in defence last Sunday gives them some run and some ball handling skill and captain Tony Egan is a versatile player who can play at either end equally effectively . Both teams most recent Grand Final appearances have been as runners-up ; No rt h in 1986 to Collegians and De La in 1985 to Ormond. Grand final victories were in 1984 for De La and in 1982 for North . It is a eagerly awaited contest and inarguably these 2 sides have been the best performed in the last few weeks of the season and the final series . It should be a great Grand Final - and speaking on behalf of all amateur footy followers I hope it is a classic one. Which of these 2 proud clubs will stand victorious with the L .A . Adamson cup next Sunday is a moot point . With my performance as a tipster in the final series, neither club wants my support . My selections currently stand at 0/3 . On what De La showed at their last meeting if their game is "on" they are more than capable of handling No rt h's stengths . Yet North's destruction of Scotch so conclusively showed all their wide array of skill in almost every facet of the game and this is the form and talent that has taken them to the top of the A Section ladder . So often in the history of the last ten years of A Section finals sides rebounded from a Second Semi defeat to extract revenge in the game that matters the most, the Grand Final . It has happened 3 times in the last 5 years and although North are desperate to make this a very successful year for them they certainly do not wish to be further weighed down by my "kiss of death". I won't win any friends with Dean Zabrieszach and Tony Duggan but I think my luck will change and so I am going for N o rt h to win the 1991 A Section Premiership and in doing so to confirm in everyone's mind that the form that they showed consistently throughout the season is a true indication of the quality of the players at the North Old Boys. Bernie Dunn and the De La club will be greatly relieved not to be selected and by being underdogs they always feel they can extract their best performances . However, a young De La side will find it very difficult to replicate their Second Semi performance. I wish both teams the very best of luck in this quest for the ultimate reward in VAFA football . I'm hoping for a real cliff hanger as the 3 results so far this year in the final series have been less than exciting by their large margins . I'm hoping that both sides engage in a real cliff hanger and give what is expected to be a big crowd, an excitement-filled Grand Final . Let's all hope so and let's enjoy a great afternoon of amateur footy .

B SECTION by Tom Johnston
PRELIMINARY FINAL - REVIEW The preliminary final at Brunswick between Old Xaverians and Old Trinity was a beauty. The weather was great, the ground ideal for a finals venue - the swirling wind added to the contest and the commitment by both sides made a great finals match . The first quarter began with Xavs kicking against a strong breeze . Paul Connors took a strong mark and kicked the first goal of the match for Xavs whose marking power looked ominous with Xavs peppering the goals, but shocking inaccuracy was inexcusable . Trinity were struggling to get going - comp . best and fairest Andrew Allibon was picked up by M att Hannebery - neither could get into the game, unlike Xavs Dermot Dann and Doug Bailey who were outstanding in the first quarter. Goals to David Taylor and Dermot Dann gave Xavs a handy break . David O'Shaughnessy kicked Trinity's first goal late in the quarter . Landrigan replied for Xavs. Right on the siren, Sammutt got a much needed goal for Trinity leaving them trailing by 19 pts and kicking against the wind in the second quarter. Trinity opened with far more purpose in the second quarter. N orman, Johnson and Allibon were sharking the ball from the centre off the dominance of Bailey in the ruck . A lan Johnson slammed the ball for Trinity's first goal, quickly followed by Borghesi and Oldfield . Xavs were now struggling - their defence led by McKay and Holmes were second to the ball, Dalton was Xavs only backman actually winning man-on-man contests . A belated goal to Denton lifted Xavs. Norman having a great second quarter, kicked a clever goal for Trinity. The game was evenly balanced . Xav's Connors converted for another goal giving the lead back to Xavs, but once again Trinity scored a goal on the siren through the clever play of Ed Borghesi, completely outplaying gun player Damien Stoney who had not touched the ball in the first half! The scores were level at half time but one got the impression Trinity were on a roll and Xavs looked to be in trouble . Thethird quarter was a beauty - Trinity were playing with great desperation - they got the ball forward for B alazsy to goal after only 1 minute. Captain-coach Alan Johnson, who had been playing very well, came off injured at the 5 min . mark. Trinity added goals to Borghesi's and Norman's and Xavs looked in big trouble as their best defender John Dalton came off with a shoulder injury . Xavs made changes : Holmes, having a shocker, went to full back, Stoney (also a shocker) to the forward line added some spark and the captain Bill Denton kicked 2 very important goals for Xavs - this seemed to lift the standard of the game, the desperation, the marking, the tackling, was acreditto both sides . Taylor was running Bailey to the ball - Bailey did not let him down by marking everything in the air. Goals to Anderson and O'Shaughnessy swung the game back to Trinity's advantage, however a late goal courtesy of a lucky "down the field" free to Landrigan left Xavs trailing by only 7 pts at three quarter time in a great quarter of Amateur football . What side would be promoted to A Grade? The weather and the fierce tackling of both sides had left their mark on many players - the side playing "beyond the call of duty" football would be promoted to A Grade ! Xavs with Doug Bailey still dominating the centre bounce got the ball forward to big forward M ark R osel who seemed to wrestle his opponent all day rather than play football, took a good mark and goaled! Trinity quickly replied through the elusive O'Shaughnessy - a problem player all day to Xavs. Curtain and Taylor drove the ball forward for Stoney to take a strong mark and goal . Landrigan snapped a great goal after M ithen's clever play in screwing the ball back from the boundary. M ithen, after a quiet second/third quarter took control in the forward line- Bill's markand goal wasexcellent work . The game was slipping awayfrom Trinity ascaptain-coach Alan Johnson returned to the ground in a valiant effort to lift his charges but all to no avail as Stoney, marking strongly, goaled . Mark Rosel, the recipient of a lucky free, put the nail in Trinity's coffin with the last goal of the match leaving Old Xaverians the victors by 21 pts in a first class finals game. Congratulations to Old Xaverians - commiserations to Old Trinity. The best players for Xavs were Bailey (fantastic effo rt), Petroff, M cCorkell, Curtain, D . Landrigan and Dalton (until injured) . For Old Trinity - N . Beardsley, Anderson, Robinson, Norman, Taylor and Parkes . 1991 GRAND FINAL - PREVIE W St Bernards clash with Old Xaverians at Elsternwick Park should provide all amateurfollowers with a fantastic game of football . St Bernards will go into this game as warm favourites, they have beaten Xavs twice during the season - 19 pts at St Bernards and by 17 pts at Xavs - both matches were played before June 30th and before Xavs were strengthened by the aquisition of Stoney and Hannebery from the AFL . The duel between Wayne Carey and Doug Bailey could decide the outcome of the match . Carey was sensational in the second semi - Bailey fantastic in the preliminary - the best 2 ruckmen in B Grade - let this contest begin! St Sernards strength is its all around the ground strength - it starts with on-ballers Carey, V. Comito, M ulkearn s and Keane in the centre. This is s area of weakness - Bailey (my tip s B&F), Curtain, Logan and Hannebery all will have to play well to get Xavs first use of the ball, an advantage Xavs did not have against Trinity although Bailey dominated . Doggies' forward line has kicked the highest aggregate points for the season and it's easy to see why - the Doggies have 5 great forwards, Luke and Jason Gollant are gun forwards - their opponents McKay and Holme s TttC ABAATCIIQ CA(1TQdI I CO --
must lift after very average games last week, Wood, Fitzpatrick and M alia all have good goal sense and on occasions have kicked match winning scores - their opponents Petroff, Doolan and Stoney are also good on their day . Dalton will be sorely missed due to injury, Petroff and Doolan are dashers, they must tighten up or pay the consequences, in fact, Xavs' backline have conceded more than 400 pts which is more than their counterparts in Doggie land . Xavs' forwards are very strong in the air . Rosel, Connors, Denton, Mithen and David Landrigan all took good marks at some stage in last week's clash against Trinity, I worry about Xavs being too cumbersome when the ball hits the ground . Doggies backmen have been mean and lean - their discipline has been great so far. Dunnell, Burke, Eagan and Capes have all had good seasons, throw in Nathan, Purcell and F. Comito and you have a pretty good line up. Across the centre Xavs will win on one wing, Dann has had a great final series, I hope Doggies' Jon Law, after missing 6 matches, returns - if not Purcell is likely to get the job on Dann . Who plays in the centre for either side will be interesting, M ithen or Hannebe ry against Malia or Keane, all are class players. Curtain will be too strong for Walsh . Summing up, I think St Bernards all-round strength will be the telling factor, Doggies have kicked 200 pts more than Xavs and conceded 400 pts less kicked against them than Xavs for the season . On top of all that St Bernards have won their 2 encounters against Xavs for the season and also have had the benefit of a week's rest . Why do I worry about picking St Bernards? Is it their previous "over confidence" - Xavs have had an excellent build-up, to come from behind last week is a credit to Michael Rush (a nicer coach you wouldn't meet) - Xavs are a very confident side . If Xavs' backmen curb the Doggies' forwards, Xavs could win this match . I expect a great match, there won't be much in this atthe final siren - the 2 best sides deservedly playing for the premiership . St Bernards by 9 pts . . . Old Xaverians Reserves by 12 pts. Congratulations and best wishes to both clubs on your promotion to A Grade, May the best side win . Let's all enjoy a great football day - let the game be played in true Amateur football spirit . Frank Dunnell has turned the Doggies around from last year's dismal final effort ; M ichael Rush took over the coaching job mid-season . Both coaches deserve special congratulations for their individual efforts for the season . Well done from the Villain! Fellow Scribes : Thanks for a great season of writing lunacy . I am sure all amateur followers read our, sometimes interesting, articles . A job well done - see you all on our annual p"' up day . Thank You : To the amateur staff : Phil Stevens, Mike McArthur-Allen, Sue Anderson and Brett Connell - you all made it a pleasure for the Villain to deal with good Amateur football personnel . Rumour (last one of the year) . . . was Kew's President, Ted Kelly, requesting Jumper No . 1 or 29 be kept for next year's coach after a successful start in A Grade . . . has the bomber returned ?

DIVISION Y REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S GA M E S Xavs put an end to M arcellin's bid for successive flags with a convincing 20 point win at Oval 4 in a game dominated by the back lines . The major difference between the 2 teams was in Hansen who impressed the Meib Xavs had an impresive CHF FC scout ; Marcetiin's senior coach (who that it Hansen couldn't get a game with .them) thought Xavs firsts must be good played against . Dillon and Dalton also did ; and hisfor opponent "Wally" who said he was the hardest opponen well Xavs whilst Portelli was a real dasher on occasions. ~ya~e~t gave an excellent display of strong marking for the Eagles whilst Dennet showed his customary dash on the backline Special mention must be made of "Secko" prominantly when he came on . "Stork" who removed the plaster from his broken hand before play and featured . kicked another goal! !

thethrashing trophy that eluded them in the 1990 Grand Final with a 22 goal annihilation of Trinity canAlbanvale be said ofgot this as the . Little was not far behind the Cobras, TheCobras' Cobras 15 goal 2nd quarter says it all . OT's score for the other 3 quarters didn't have any passengers but I thought Paddon's game, in the ruck, was theattacks start of many of their moves whilst also taking many marks - a kick behind some Cobra . Goalsneak "Gatty" chipped in with 9 goals when did repel stood out. OT's had good battlers and Volpato got 7. After the annihilation of the previous day, we all hoped for a close encounter between we again witnessed an easy win with OM's almost doubling O 's and 'Tones but 'Tones' score . The standard of M by the very strong wind blowing to the scoreboard end which favoured the game was spoilt O M 's in the 1st quarter and it was only achange couple of goals to them just before 1/4 time that gave them breathing space with 'Tones . The 2nd quarter saw a dramatic notthem attacking the ball with the same fervour as in the 1st and just blazing away expecting the wind to do the work for On the other hand, O M 's and the aerial dominance of .Rose were spurred on by the excellent running play of Salter . O M 's 3 goals against the wind versus 'Tones' the gale them the mental boost needed and they didn't slacken off their confident approach to solitary the ball 1inwith the 2nd half gave OM's defensive . I'm know what A ndrew Ralph will be telling his prolific possession getter, Keyhoe and try to will beat the whole field" after seeing him waste so many possessions over the last 2-"kick weeksthe ball of thedon't key battles be D's McLeod at full back who will be determined to prevent . Some he needs to get the " ton". Dean Paul Salter getting the 4 goals will have the biggest challenge against last week's matchwinner, Hansen and this should be a great contest . "Hilbo" willmarks be out to repeat his 2nd semi effort against D's Dom Schuiiing who is unlikely to repeat his display of fumbling . Davies restricted D's M akinson Rob will to only 1 goal last time but be out to prove he can kick a bag of goals against a top team . The of an over confident approach and I know "blew" the flag away because Denis is determined not to let that bitD's of history repeat itself even though someD's think they are showing signs of the same chink in their armour that . Both teams have good backlines and I think have just a few more options up forward than Xavs but -it d it-in Der Pl i b from ght and Vivona to cash in on the drive from Crowe, S metter,4 quarte Xavs, likewise, will want better input from skipper G reen, rover r ith and Lesterr heir best 2 w~ee~s ago ? Cook and forward Dugga n I could take the easy way out like the anonymous "C" Grade columnist did last week and nottmake alselecf on but, never being one to shirk a challenge, I'll go for the D's to sneak home because ( have a feeling that they have just a slight team discipline and discipline has been a telling factor in many U/19 games this year to get home edge by 5 in points! . D's
Thanks again to all coaches etc, who have kept me informed throughout the year - I've enjoyed our chats . Thanks alsoto Vic Health forthe great job they do in sponsoring and supporting under-age football in the VAFA and throughout the State. Finally, thanks to all U/19 readers - we have certainly exchanged some good-natured "stirs" through the year Hope to see you again in 1992 .
Congratulations to both these U19 Section sides on winning the big one weekend .

MARKETING NEWS by Mike McArthur-Alle n
In this last Marketing News for 1991 I have asked the VAFA Major Sponsor for this year, Vic Health, through its agency Dental Health Services, to provide the editorial copy . As mentioned in my column last week, Vic Health is clearly not involved in sports sponsorship to sell more of a particular product . The Victorian Health Promotion Foundation is concerned with sponsoring sport within Victoria to increase community awareness of the need for "good health" . In our case, this health message is focused on dental safety and so the following, very important, editorial adds further to the awareness-creating exercise . I commend all parents, officials and players to take a few moments to read the message. You never know when you may be in a position where this information may be vitally required .
SAVE A KNOCKED OUT TOOTH
-
PUT IN STRAIGHT BACK!
Football is a game that is fast and exciting, however it does have the ever present risk of injury . That is one of the many challenges of the game . One of the injuries that may occur during a match or a training session is a permanent tooth being knocked out . If that should occur, there are some very simple steps that you can take which, if carried out as quickly as possible , may save the tooth : 1 . Find the tooth . 2 . Do not handle the tooth by its root ! 3 . If the root is dirty, gently rinse it in milk, saliva or cold running water for a few seconds only . Do not try to scrub the tooth clean or try to clean it with harsh cleaning agents . 4 . Quickly replace the permanent tooth in its original position using the other teeth as a guide . 5 . Hold the tooth in position with finger pressure or by gentle biting on a handkerchief or piece of gauze . 6 . If unable to replace the tooth, rinse it in water and then wrap it in gladwrap or store it in milk . 7. Seek dental help from a dentist or the Royal Melbourne Dental Hospital immediately. Early first aid treatment followed by correct management in the dental surgery will help to save a knocked out permanent tooth from being lost forever.

ARE E'`i'taa]ITT ED Gi3 i`Y iI~::1"CH DAY BY ORDER VAFA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE The above rule hascertainly been well received bythe majority of patronsto Elsternwick Park, as can bejudged by the letter which I have included below . However, a number of patrons are being extremely difficult and argumentative and need to understand that you won't be allowed to keep your dog at Elsternwick Park if you try and flaunt the rules - in fact the Brighton Council is quite supportive of this initiative by providing a Council Dog Catcher . Recent publicity surrounding dogs, including the tragic death in Sydney of an infant, has certainly vindicted the Executive's decision - the VAFA was even applauded for its stance on 3AW during the week . The VAFA is firmly committed to "Family Football" - and this means children, not dogs . Mr Phil Steven s General Manage r Victorian Amateur Football Association Dear Phil , Congratulations to the VAFA on its decision to ban dogs from Elsternwick Park. On the many occasions I have visited the Park to enjoy Amateur Football, I have been very wary and nervous about the number of dogs roaming the ground unattended . It has been especially more of a conern to me as now I take a small baby and would like to feel I could place her on a blanket or leave her in a pram safely . However, the day of the first semi, there were at least ten dogs near where we were situated and the group of people with whom I was standing were very agitated and annoyed with the constant harassment of these dogs . Today we went to the Park to watch the 'C' Grade final and the atmosphere was excellent and the abolishment of the dogs made us more at ease and able to enjoy the day . (Name and Address supplied ) Winners thus far in the HBA/A Section Coach of the Day and Player of the Day awards are as follows : 1st Semi : Coach - Peter Sherwen (Old Scotch) Player - Duncan McCal l 2nd Semi : Coach - Bernie Dunn (De La Salle ) Player - Roger Prezens I Prelim . Final : Coach - Robert Hyde (North Old Boys) Player - Darren Marti n HBA's award (both of champagne to the coach and double movie passes to the player) is greatly appreciated and further shows the great support of this Sponsor to VAFA football . Press correspondents/secretaries today need only to hand Q by Q scores, goalkickers and 6 best players from each side to Nancy McTaggart at Elsternwick Park as soon as possible after the Presentation Ceremony for your particular final . Thank you to all club officials who have worked as hard to make the 1991 press requirements system work successfully. TNF Il@AATFIIR 900TRA1 1 FR 1QQ1

Apologies to Mazenod for getting that club excited unnecessarily but due to a miscalculation Mazenod is in fact second and St Bernards is the 1991 Winner of the "4'n'20" Club Championship . Apologies to both these clubs for this error . The Award is based on a scoring system whereby each club's senior win earned 3 points, each reserves win 2 points and each U19 win 1 point . Clubs with 2 U19 sides received an average of both teams' wins while clubs without U19 sides received no points . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1991
TODAY'S COACHES A SECTIO N BERNARD DUNN - DE LA SALL E It is a very proud moment for the De La Salle Old Collegians Football Club to be back in the A Section Grand Final . It has been the scene of some tremendous victories by our teams showing great courage wearing the Blue and Gold . This is a magnificent opportunity for our players to meet a challenge at the highest level of amateur football and to rise above the demands of home and away games and produce that extra level of courage needed to win a Grand Final . One carries a Grand Final victory right through life, and I am very confident that the players representing ' De La' today will be prepared to do whatever is required, including risking physical injury, in their pursuit of success .
ROBERT HYDE - NORTH OLD BOY S The team's record of 1991 home and away games - 15 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses clearly shows that North Old Boys have been averyconsistent side. Finishing 18 points clear of second position is further proof of this . However, premierships are not obtained by aclub's record in the minor rounds . The ingredients in the team's performance which does indicate our ability to succeed is a relentless desire to succeed and a never-give-in attitude. We have won probably six games bycoming from behind after seeming to be in losing positions . After each game that we did lose (including the second semi-final), we have bounced backthe following week . After losing the second semi-final, the players' and club's attitude has been fantastic and proof of our resilience was the magnificient performance in the preliminary final . The players have bonded together and we are looking forward to the grand fina l with quiet confidence, knowledgable in the factthat they have done the hard work (since Nov. last year) and knowing that each of them will be giving their all, and more, in every contest and every issue .

FRANK DUNNELL - ST BERNARD' S Xavier have proven to be a very capable side this year, especially after their performance against Old Trinity last weekend . My players have worked hard consistently over the year and if weather permits, it should be a very entertaining match . St Bernard's Old Collegians Football Club was founded in 1963 and had immediate success in winning both the E Section Reserves and Senior premierships in its augurual year . The D grade premiership followed in 1964 and promotion to B grade was achieved in 1969. That same year the U19s were formed and were premiers of their sectio n Promotion to A grade was earned in 1971 and then followed the most successful decade in the club's history - playing in seven final series and three Grand Finals - the highlight winning A section in 1975 . Since that time there have been two B section flags, afurther Reserve and U19 flag, and with sound administration, good coaching and dedicated players we are looking toward a long and further successful period in A section .
MICK RUSH - OLD XAVERIAN S The team I have had the pleasure of coaching has answered many challenges throughout the year. We are coming up against the team who deservedly finished on top of the laddec I n some ways we go into the game with nothing to lose and a flag to gain . The Old Xaverians Football Club was formed in 1923 and joined the Amateur ranks . Playing from the College the first premiership was a C grade flag won in 1938. Two B grade pennants were added in 1948 and 1962 . Como Park became the club's home in 1974 and 4 years later another move to Yarra Park saw the club's fortunes rise even further. Coming from the lower grades a series of successes saw a D grade flag in 1976, C grade in 1978, and a remarkable back to back in 1980 and 1981 with B & A grade Premierships . The Old Xavs have appeared in 3 Grand Finals during the last 10 years, 1986, '87 & '88, suffering losses in all - 2 in A grade against Ormond and in B grade against Paradians. This Saturday is history in the making for Old Xaverians with 3 teams, the U19s,1st&2nd XVllls, playing off intheGrand Finals while the senior teams look forward to the return to A grade in 1992 . 26 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1991
COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by Mike McArthur-Alle n Coaching has occupied a large part of my sporting life, some 16 years in total, and of those, 9 of them have been spent within the VAFA. My playing and coaching career in a wide variety of leagues and associations has reinforced to me that the general ethos of football within the VAFA is of the highest quality and one that I have found the most enjoyable of all my sporting experiences . Of all the many players, administrators and supporters that I have encountered and dealt with, the ones that will remain in my best moments are those from VAFA clubs. Relationships forged have been enduring and of great value to me. The people that I have the most respect for in football, in the main, have been from within the ranks of the VAFA . It is easy, I guess, to sound like a paid political advertisement given my new role as Executive Officer, but I firmly believe that what is on offer within the VAFA is football played for the right reasons and in the best spirit, and for that reason I am proud to be an active member of the Association . It is the time of year, as I was reminded by reading John Simpson's article in last week' s Coaches Clipboard, that a lot of soul searching and analysis is undertaken by clubs and -- ~~ by coaches, and hopefully by players themselves . Simon Meehan wrote a small article on "the Agony of the Early Departure" and in it he makes the point that it hits hard when all the planning and effort and aspirations are terminated by being one of those man y teams that miss a finals berth . And hence when the final curtain falls and the realisation is that there are no more games for you to coach or for your team to play, failure is your only thought . The critical self analysis starts off Why? How? Who? What? and as Simmo put it, you just start again . It never really stops. I can em path ise with Simon Meehan's feelings as for the first time in many years I have to face an empty September without the challenge and thrill and excitement that finals bring . It has been a very different conclusion to a season for me . I have even found myself missing the cold, wet training nights . Yet I think I am no different to most people who have coached that the unpleasant components of the job are just a necessary partand can even be rewarding in their own right if approached with a positive view and a sense of purpose . Standing back and observing Amateur football this year I have been impressed with the range and quality of coaches that we have in the VAFA . I have seen football in almost every grade including U/19 games . The common thread is the obvious passion coaches have for their role and for the game . Each in their own way are trying to extract the best possible performance out of themselves and their team . Emotions sometimes get in the way of clear thinking but it is an emotional game . If we removed the emotional content the game would lose much of its appeal, I suspect . It is by the harnessing of these emotions both within the coach himself, and by his example, within his players, that the optimum performance level can be achieved . Understanding the game and all its vagaries is essential, but so too is understanding what drives players to play and perform . I always found the two best teaching influences is to watch and listen to others and experience itself . No-one has a monopoly on football wisdom or an infinite understanding about the game . Even Allan Jeans makes the point that he learns something each time he watches another coach, or another team, or listens to another speaker about football . How foolish or presumtuous are we if, at our level, we think we know all and there's nothing to learn . That is why developing networks amongst fellow coaches or people outside the VAFA that can bring a fresh insight, is of inestimable value and shouldn't be overlooked . That is one of the intrinsic values of our own sub-group . It is the reason why articles by David Parkin on "Why an Accredited Coach" should be compulsory reading for all coaches and club officials and VAFA Executive members if we are to continue to improve the quality of coaching within our Association . A coach, more than an administrator, parent or players, influences most of the quality of the sporting environment wherever the game is played . Given this, it seems a wise decision to assist him to understand his work in a responsible and competent manner . David Parkin makes the point that our society does not permit untrained teachers to educate our children, or if we are sick or injured we look for appropriately qualified personnel to treat and rehabilitate us . Yet we permit anyonetocoach and influence our developing sports peoplewithout knowing theircapacityto perform adequately . He goes further to state the coach is often the most ' significant other" in a young person's life . He can influence dramatically, not only a players sporting experience and development, but all the other elements of the player's life. For that reason David is committed to Coach Education and believes the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme to be the best vehicle for setting, communicating and maintaining the relevant standards. Translating back to our level, it simply means that coaches within the VAFA have an obligation to improve their knowledge. Opportunities are provided to do so through Level 1, 2 or 3 Coaching Accreditation Courses . As has been the case for the past two years, the VAFA Executive has insisted that all U/19 coaches have at least Level 1 Accreditation . This stance has been applauded at the National level and a number of other footballing bodies have followed suit . The VAFA Executive has clearly made a step towards taking responsibility for the quality of their coaching at the Ul19 level . The VAFA President, Mr David Scott, has already indicated that he is in favour of increasing this requirement to include senior coaches within the next few years . I, for one, support this stance . I believe no-one, despite their many years experience at coaching, is beyond improving their coaching expertise . We are currently exploring the possibility of providing a Level 1 Course for VAFA coaches in February of next year to continue to assist amateur coaches to gain the necessary accreditation . Would today be the evener? VFL Commissioner Ross Oakley attended the Grand Final luncheon. Ross played for Collegians in its last "A" Section Grand Final appearance when Collegians overwhelmed Old M elburnians 17 .9 to 9 .13. It was a heart-breaking accuracy on a perfect football day that killed N orth Old Boys but the accuracy was Collegians . They kicked 14 goals straight until they scored a behind inthetime-on period of thethird term . The final score was Collegians 21 .6 to North 11 .15 . Peter Wright won well in the ruck for North but the small men of Collegians and the inspired ruck roving of Hoyle and Ian Herman gave opportunities to forward Richard H erman . N orth's best were Turnbull, Cahill, Brown, Walters, Weir, Griffin while the stars for Collegians were Hoyle, Tregear, W illiams, Ian and Richard Herman. As in "A" the 2 teams that topped the ladder in B, Old Paradians and Old Xaverians met in the Grand Final and were represented by the following : Old Paradians B : Grill s Pritchard N elso n HB : M . Dominic Spillane played his 100th game - his career to date was an illustrious one : Club best and fairest in 1983 and 1985, Dominic captained the successful Victorian Carnival team in 1986 in Adelaide and was also selected to lead the All-Australian team . And Dominic celebrated with a flag as Paradians won 13.10 to 11 .12 . Paradians staved off a strong final challenge from Xavs who kicked 3 goals in 4 minutes . Paradians steadied to hold on . It was a double premiership for Old Paradians as they defeated St Bernards 11 .8 to 8.10 in the "B" Reserve Grand Final . Ormond's disappointment eased a little when they also took out a double, defeating BulleenTemplestowe 14.10 to 10.11 in the "A" Reserve Grand Final and resoundingly defeating MHSOB 23.19 to 11 .4 in the Under-19 Grand Final .
40 YEARS AGO - 1951 Old M elburnians welcomed new coach, John Mitchell, and, among the recruits, Ian Rutherford and John Davis, who went on to be great players in the club's 3 premierships, 1953-54-55 . Harry Heathershaw, later a member of the Executive, was coaching Commonwealth Bank . It was "Pop" Shapir's 19th year as MHSOB President . Amateur football was saddened by the death of University Blacks' centre half back, Brian M anuel - the Ormond scribe Dr J .i? . Porter, wrote, "deepest sympathy to Mr and Mrs Manuel, on the loss of their son, Brian, who we had come to know as a sportsman - in its highest meaning . Today we meet the Blacks in whose ranks he was an ornament . The game and life go on . Vale, Brian". Old Paradians as always enjoyed their trip to Geelong - good weather, good company, and a lastminute victory . Morrie Considine played an outstanding game at full back . M HSOB Juniors were pleased with the great form of Neil Roberts, later to win a Brownlow Medal at centre half back for St Kilda . 94
Captain of the team was Geoff Paul who had a long career with the club and in 1991 is a member of the Tribunal . Advertisers were Pelaco It is indeed a lovely shirt, Sir", Taylor's Coaching College, Jamieson's Men's Wear, L-Jay Knitwear, Melbourne Sports Depot, State Savings Bank of Victoria, Lindsay Hassett's Sports Store . "A" Section captains were Doug Arnold (Hampton Rovers), ?? (Old Scotch), Ken James (C'weath Bank), Keith Lewis (Colleg.), Joe Sheehan (Ormond), Geoff Sinclair (Uni . Blues), Harry Meredith (Uni . Blacks), Peter Con (Old Melburnians), Bill Sparks (Ivanhoe) . The selectors picked the following players to represent the State in the Carnival at St Kilda Cricket Ground - Doug Arnold, Sam Birtles (Hampton Rovers) ; Duncan Anderson, John Jolly (Uni . Blues) ; Peter Cox, B ryce Thomas (Old Melburnians); Martin Bedford, Don Moro ne (Old Scotch Collegians) ; Don Bills (Malvern) ; Kevin Clark (Ivanhoe) ; Eric Donaldson, Geoff Harris (Ormond) ; Alan Ferguson (State Savings Bank) ; Geoff Hibbins, Brian Judd (Collegians) ; Murray Mathieson (Geelong) ; Alan M ellors (B'wick) ; Harry M eredith (Uni . Blacks) ; Phil McLaughlin (Old Paradians) ; Alby Padley (Kew) ; Alan Shiel, Jack Thomas (Commonwealth Bank) . Canberra were playing in the Carnival and in the team was Richard Woolcott ; in 1991 he is head of Australia's Foreign Affairs Department . Western Australia included B. Snedden, 24,6'0", 13.10, later to be Leader of the Opposition, and Speaker in the House of Representatives . The 5 team Carnival was thrown into confusion when in the first match W .A . (11 .14) drew with Tasmania (12 .8) . Canberra fielded a strong team beating S.A . 11 .11 to 9 .12, and W.A ., 19.12 to 12 .10 . This put them into the final against Victoria whose only previous match inthe Carnival was a39.18 to 4.4 win over Tasmania . Victoria defeated Canberra 18.20 to 2 .5. Jack Walsh retired after umpiring VAFA matches for 21 years. In his playing days Jack had been a leading goalkicker for Brighton in the VFA . His son, Brian Walsh, went on to be a great player for Ormond and St Kilda (VFL) while very recently his grandson, Peter Wilson, was captain and best and fairest at Hampton Rovers. After 16 games, Duncan Anderson had kicked 101 goals for University Blues . Next goalkicker on the list was Sam Birtles (Hampton Rovers), 45 . Hampton Rovers won the last match against Old Scotch to leap into the four at Old Scotch's expense . Commonwealth Bank, Uni . Blues, Ormond finished in first 3 places. The 2 top teams, Bank and Blues, were both rolled in the semi finals and the 2 district teams met in the Grand Final, with Ormond trying to make it 2 in a row. Best and fairest award winners were " A" Geoff Hibbins (Collegians), " B" Phil M cLaughlin (Old Paradians), " C" Bill M cGrory (Glenhuntly), "D" G. Allen (Teachers College), Junior N eil Roberts (MHSOB) . In a low scoring "A" Section final Ormond led until the final minutes when Hampton Rovers big ruckman, Ray Clover, kicked a goal to givethe Roverstheirfirst ever "A" Section flag by 5 points, 7 .12 to 7.7 . Best for the Rovers were captain Doug Arnold in his last VAFA game, a careerthat had started with the Rovers back in 1936, Laurie Anstee who next year transferred to Ormond, famed centre half forward Sam Birtles, John O rton, Rusty Warnett, recruited from Geelong College, as were 2 other members of the team,
John Came ron and Merv Davidson and rugged Don Kinsey who is still seen round the club. Coach was Norm "Boss" James . Among the goalkickers was Bruce de Lacy, a son of the legendary Sporting Globe football writer, Hec de Lacy. Bruce was later VAFA Tribunal Secretary for many years . Ormond juniors went through the season undefeated, and after a scare from Power House in the Semi Final, defeated MHSOB in the Grand Final . Leading players for Ormond were Ian Bishop (in late years an All-Australian Amateur), John Byrne, Col Wilson (went on to be a member of Rilelbourne's VFL premiership teams), Graham Barnard, Lindsay Shannon and Frank Forbes . Coach was Clarrie Vontom, former Collegians, VAFA interstate player of 1936, and St Kilda (VFL) rover.

ROBERT ° EL L
EUS ;-i =IEL D
After a career as a prominent senior country footballer Robert comenced umpiring with the VAFA in 1985 and has at all times worked hard on his game. Rob must be under consideration for one of this weekend's sought after appointments after having enjoyed a fine season .
Mark has umpired 135 VAFA games and has been a consistent umpire during 1991 . "Bushy's" desire to work hard and improve has seen him entrench himself as one of our best "A " Section umpires. In his yellow and black training top, Mark with ball in hand resembles Tiger legend K . B. in full flight .
Steve played a lot of senior football before taking up the whistle with the VAFA in 1985 and he has now umpired 150 VAFA matches including 4 U/19 Grand Finals. "Clinchy" has again performed well this year and certainly will be seen this weekend in charge of one of the big games.
DARREN DA LGLEISEi
F.US SELL ER r~MCI S
TOi,EY F1EiLE S
Darren has been with the VAFA since 1989 and has earned the reputation of being one of the fittest men in white . Darren is having his best season and umpired last Sunday's A section prelim . final . li Darren misses this weekend's A section Grand Final it will only be by a "whisker".
Russell started umpiring with the VAFA in 1985 and unfortunately he has been plagued with leg injuries over the last few seasons. 1991 has seen " Rusty" have a good pre-season which has allowed him to cement himself as an "A" section umpire and put him in this line-up of 12 for the 10 available spots this weekend .
This season is Tony's first with the VAFA after several with the AFL. Tony has worked hard on his game and he reached "A" section mid season after some very fine performances. His experience and ability is certain to put pressure on the other contenders for the "best" appointments this weekend .
ANDREW KILNE R
STEVE F.,IcCARTHY
NOEL McDONALD
This is Andrew's first season with the VAFA and he has established himself as a quality "A" section umpire by performing very well throughout the year. A jovial character, Andrew has very quickly established himself as one of the very best VAFA umpires .
Steve commenced with the VAFA in 1984 and has umpired 182 VAFA games including 2'E'sectionGrand Finals, 1 'C' Grand Final and 4 'U19' Grand Finals . Steve has had a great season to date and umpired the A section first semi final .
Noel once again has been rated one of the best 12 umpires and may be one of the 10 umpires to be given one of this weekend's games .

JUSTIN TOOHEY
Following an illustrious playing career with Parkside and Kew, "Riddy" oined the VAFA in 1986 and has umpired 83 matches including a'D' section and U19 Grand Final . Geoff has forced his way into contention with consistently good performances this year.
Richard commenced with the VAFA in 1989 after several years with the VFL and has been a very consistent performer having umpired 2'A' section Grand Finals. Travelled to Adelaide in 1990 as the VAFA's representative for the state match . Last year's "A" section final saw Richard at his best . A hot tip for one of Sunday's top jobs .
Justin started with the VAFA in 1986 and then joined the AFL for a couple of seasons, rejoining the VAFA in 1991 . Have an excellent season this year, Justin was selected as the VAFA's rep in this year's Perth Amateur Carnival where he performed creditably . A certainty for one of this weekend's top jobs on Saturday or Sunday.
