Another magnificent season of Amateur football is iboutto begin and what an amazing off-season it has )een . As all Amateur followers know, extensive renovations iave been completed at Elsternwick Park and this weekend we hope that as many lovers of Amateur football will visit the Park (note free entry both days) to see the new building and in particular to participate in an official opening ceremony before the De La Salle/ St Bernard's game. To give the day a real festive occasion the Brighton City Band will perform before the game and at half time some activities will be conducted on the ground for children . The . 1993 season was launched in magnificent fashion last Monday night at the Southern Cross at the traditional Presidents' Secretaries and Members' Night. Guest speaker Tom Hafey, entertainer Paul Jennings
and MC Leon Wiegard starred on the night but the real stars were the club people who attended, got to know each other and wished each other well for the year . A sad moment for the Administration was when we learnt that Mike McArthur-Allen decided to leave the Administration staff and return to coaching. Mike's great efforts in regard to sponsorship and organising the tribunal has been superb and on a personal note this support, willingness to assist at times and friendship has been much appreciated. The 1993 staff of myself, Sue, Brett and Brian, on behalf of all football followers, wish Mike all the best of luck for the future. New President David Burnes providesthe remainder of the first Editorial for this season . Good luck to all teams for the year - and as always may your results reflect the amount of planning and effort your club has put in before today . Phil Stevens, G M
VAFA PRESIDENT'S EDITORIAL, by David Burnes Good afternoon and welcome to all VAFA players, officials and suppo rt ers for season 1993. This season we have 6 new clubs joining our association, these bein g Canterbury North Balwyn, Balwyn Combined, Yarra Valley, all new clubs, Oakleigh as a senior club from the U19 and Camberwell and Old Westbourne from G Grade. Congratulations to all those clubs and good luck for season 1993. As all clubs would know, the builders have been hard at work all through summer and we have now moved back to the new extended offices at Elsternwick Park . The benefits to all members of the Association will become apparent as the season progresses. With the extra meeting rooms now upstairs we will be able to hold all our Tribunal hearings upstairs, thus releasing all the lower function room for nervous a ttendees to wait in, which I am sure you will agree will be a lot better than the previous arrangements . The official opening of the new extension will be on Sunday April 4th and all followers of Amateur football are invited to th EP for this occasion . The match of the

day is De La Salle vs St Bernard's and entrance to the ground will be free of charge . Please take this opportunity to come down and see the extension as staff will be on duty to show anyone over the new offices . In fact both matches this weekend are free of charge and we intend to welcome as many people as possible to Elsternwick Park . Representative football will again feature highly in this years fixture with games against the South Australian Amateurs and the Victorian Country Football Leagues . The games against South Australia will be played in South Australia and the senior team will be playing the curtain raiser to the Adelaide vs Footscray game at Football Park . With a crowd of 4500 expected to be in attendance by the final quarter I am sure that all those who represent the Big V will no doubt enjoy the thrill of playing in front of a crowd of this size . In a return totradition we have decided to playa game against a combined Victorian Country Football League team. This game to be played at Elsternwick Park in July will, I am sure, be a highlight of the season . All continued page 3 m

A SECTION by Adam Kenyo n
Well we re off again! A new season, new recruits, new oaches and two new teams. Before I begin the game previews I believe that veryone associated with the VAFA would join with me i congratulating Christian Davidson (Collegians), Nick litchell (St Bernards), AndrewTranqutlli (Marcellin) and teward Steele (Old Scotch) on their drafting to AFL anks . The battle of the blue bloods may well turn into a blood ath today as Collegians take an Old Scotch at the larry Trott Oval . Put simply Scotch have been ecimated by the losses of Brady, Miller and Steele and is hard to see them being competitive . The reigning remiers, despite losing Davidson, Tony Parkin and tephen Mount, look far too strong and should win asily today. Scotch are renowned for their tough game nd certainly won't let Collegians get an easy kick, but lent a skill will win this battle . The ball carriers that Collegians possess, such as 4att Galbraith, DannyThomson and Mark Hibbins will live Rick Schober opportunities up forward . Where will cotch get their drive from? It is generally known that lob Fuller's shoulder is not up to it . They've lost their pearhead, their centre half back and it remains to be een if Gavin Eagle will line up today. Collegians may vell be sitting where they finished last year, after todays lame . Collegian by 8 goals . North Old Boys play A section new comer, Old ;rinity at Elsternwick Park . This will be a very good test or Trinity. North are most competitive without being >utstanding . They are quick and they hit hard . Trinity ilthough unsettled by the resignation of Alan Johnson re blessed with skill wingman Dave Rogers, Captain andrew Allibon and the dashing David Balazys will all iave something to offer A section . North will certainly niss Peter O'Farrell and Tony Cahill but they will be able o field a stronger team than they did in '92 courtesy )f a ridiculous amount of injuries . The likes of Tony Egan, im Jones and Steve Brasil will certainly show the way rver Trinity today and I would expect North to be omfortably in front at the final bell . Late last year Trinity Jid unearth some goal kicking power which could insettle Norths defence and there is no doubt that ormer Old Boy Mick Hedley will be keen to win, but qorth will be just as keen to make amends for a poor 92 . The Old Boys lost 3 games last year by one point and I believethey would have recruited very well (though hey are giving nothing away!) North by 30 points . Old Brighton are at home to Ormond . Ormond inder the guidance of Mike McArthur-Allen, like North, iave a lot to prove this year. McArthur-Allen's youngsters will have to provide the unning game to thwart Brighton's home ground
Brighton are very strong in the mid field with Andrew Pryor and Andrew Grant being great ball gatherers, and with Tom Hayden up forward anything could happen today. However by Mark Parker's own admission Brighton are 'up against it this year' . Already injuries havetaken theirtoll atthe club and some players have chosen not to play in '93 . The tonners hope to gain many players from their APS premiership side, but it appears that the good ones have been drafted by the AFL or the VSFL U18's . Ormond on the other hand have lost Craig Clark and Paul Schuhkraft but still have great talent at the club . Nick Sebo, Andrew Jobling and BrettConnell will ensure that Ormond starts the season on a winning note, but it wori t be without afight because Brighton will certainly'have a dip'. Ormond by 15 points . Old Xaverians unveil their new home grou nd at the Lake Oval when they take on Old Haileybu ry. Xavs have lost Matt Hannebery who has ruptured his achilles and Dale Holmes, but they now know what A Section is all about . Matt Bourke, John McKay, John Bowen and Doug Bailey are all strong players and when given a sniff the Xavs can be hard to toss . Haileybury made a storming run home!astyear butwill greatlymiss Simon Meehan . Meehan's loss will be covered by a fit Chris McKenzie and with Glen Tanner, Darren Connell, Dave Seccull and Matthew Armstrong providing many opportunities, I believe the Bloods will be among the winners on a regular basis in'93 . Haileybury learnt how to play as a team in '92 and if they continue to play the same way we could see them going a couple of steps further this season . Xavs never give up but still perhaps lack the talent to be a force in A Section . Today will be a big day for the Old Haileyburians and they will win by three goals or more . The final game is at Elsternwick Park on Sunday between De La Salle and St Bernards. De La Salle will miss Chris Campbell this year and there are doubts as to whether or not Peter Rennie will play . But there is talent all over the ground . Nick Fraser and Pat Mannix provide the avenues to goal while Brett Mahoney, Andrew Ronchie and Col McClounan are usually able to control the ball around the packs . St Bernards look to have lost Gavin Keane but have picked up Trevor Spencerwhowill be ahuge assetand will free up Luke Gollant . Wayne Carey and Matt Mulkearns will have a great dual with the De La onballers which is where the game will be won or lost . The loss of Peter Rennie could prove to be the downfall of De La today, unless Grant Sheedy and John Tully can cover for him . On paper De La Salle still appearto bethe better side, but I have a feeling that St Bernards have recruited well (again and give nothing away) and will be superfit and determined . Today I am tipping St Bernards by a goal .

MATT SZYLIT - OFRi'.1OPlD 1993 Certificate of Merit Winner Matt joined Ormond in 1963 as their permanent boundaryumpire, recruited from the famous Glenhuntly Amateur Athletic Club . Matt has continued as the permanent senior boundary umpire for the Ormond Senior Side for all of those 30 years . A fantastic effort indeed. During Matt's very long career with Ormond, he has umpired 363 senior games, (mostly A Grade), 9 Reserve games, 4 Under 19 games and 22 Amateur final games . He was awarded Life Membership of the Ormond Club and has in no small way contributed to the tremendous success of the Club . He is atrue amateur, having served the Club in a totally honorary capacity and when Matt does decide to hang up those white boots, he will indeed be a hard act to follow.

In conclusion may I take this opportunity on behalf of everyone connected with Amateur football to thank our immediate past president David Scott . David was made a life member of the Association at the 1992 Annual General Meeting and is the current President of the Australian Amateur Football Council . The work put in by David and his wife in our centenary year was outstanding and as Chairman while David was President, may I say what a pleasure it was to work with him . Good luckto everyone in today'sfirst round and good luck for season 1993. David Burnes President VAFA

Woodhead and B rett Connell . Both have fitted in extremely well and now help to provide service to all ourclubs along with Phil Stevens and Sue Anderson . Good luck guys . A sad note overthe New Year was the tragic passing of Whitefriars OC 1992 Best & Fai re st Simon Strike . It is sad to lose anyone at anytime, let alone someone so young with so much zest for life . Deepest sympathy to all concerned . In closing, the annual Presidents', Sec retaries' and Members' Dinner was held at the Southern Cross last Monday . All who attended would agree that it is a great lead into a new season . Tom Hafey really stole the show with his rousing speech about his passion, 'Aussie Rules: Congratulations to all of the Certificate of Merit winners : Alby Bolger (Parkside), Pat Egan (Therry), Ian England (0 . Carey), Tim Gallop (MHSOB), Ted & Norma M cNamara (Uni Blues) and Matt Syylat (Ormond) . To be honoured in this way is surely one reason why the VAFA is such a'revered' and 'envied' sporting association .

3ood afternoon fellow 'B-Graders' . ew season has dawned upon us and with it many anges ; the most significant being, of course, the htly younger and thinner B Section scribe, who will his best to totally captivate readers of this column :h accurate previews and reviews for the next 5 mths. On the eve of yet another big season in B ction and, indeed Amateur football, I mustwelcome readers and pass on my best wishes to the 9 B ction Clubs in their quest to defeat Old Mentonians the '93 flag (no bias intended, Mr Reilly) . In the only 'B Section resident's' match for Round Banyule, under new coach Grant Lawrie play host Uni Blues at Heidelberg Park . Banyule, who lost 4 their 1st 5 games last year, are keen to kick start'93 better fashion and will be looking for guidance from egSutterbySteve'Hoota Grey and big DaveWilliams the Ruck. The Blues, under 1st year coach and past 3yer Grant Williams, have lost many prime movers m '92, notably Darryl Gust, Greg Lockheed and rover im Stevenson, however returning to the Club are Chris ylor and Toby McIntyre . The Blues are a young side, th lots of potential and are going through a rebuilding age whereas Banyule are in for a big year . Banyule , 35 points . 1992 C Section Premiers Fawkner are at home to E)'Talk-of-the-town' Old Melburnians . Unfortunately Lwkner look like being without the Majerozak brothers, arren Hore and Amateur legend 'Harry' Busst who is finally hung up the boots . Coach Mark Tymms will relying on 1992 C Section B & F Rob 'Henry' Lawson id keep your eye out for two new players - David aenan and Brad Crouch . After a 'yo-yo' start to the G2 season, OM's picked up their feet to storm into cond position, but performed badly in the finals . Look it Fawkner - OM Coach Paul O'Brien and his charges, aded by skipper Jeremy Nicholls, big Scott Teal and chard Webb aren't mucking about this year - and )u're first cab off the rank! - OM's by 6 goals . 1992 Finalists Whitefriars, meet A Section discards arcellin at the College oval in what appears to be a ie-sided affair. Reappointed coach Geoff Reilly has d an enormous task of recent weeks getting his iarges focused on the job at hand, but believes that eir recent tragic loss will" bring the club closertogether arcellin, after winning just 5 games last year and !ceiving the A Section wooden spoon are back in B ,ade for the first time in 8 years . They have struggled recent years and are now rebuilding with a young thusiastic team . Kerin Lawson comes in as the 5th oach in as many years but will be without top name ayers Amad, Tranquilli, Slattery and Petroff just to ame a few. Whitefriars comfortably by 6 goals . Old Mentonians, under new coach Garry Connolly,
Keysborough playing fields . The Panthers must surely realise now the importance of winning early games after their shocking opening to 1992 which saw their demise in September, Bournon, Solley and Acreman will be a handfull for Bull's coach Harry Harisiou and with mid fieldersSly, Dickson and Scott the Toners will beaforce to be reckoned with this year . BT, after a good 1992 season finished in disappointing fashion to Fawkner . Simon Driver, Chris Parris and Peter George will need to be kept under guard by Connolly and, if they both play, an exciting match-up will be Farrow vs Pace . Sorry Bulls - Panthers by 25 points . The final game sees Therry battle Old Paradians at Oak Park in an interesting match-up. Therry's practice match form has been good and they are looking forward to a successful season in B grade with chief players Matton, Eastmore, Carter and Reddich the ones to watch. Parade, once again under coach Mick Mulvahill have appointed Peter Brabender as Captain, however a whisper is they have lost Camerdon, Reeves, and McClementsto another Club. TED AND NORMA McNAMARA - UNIVERSITY BLUES 1993 Ce rtificate of Merit Winners ThisAwardtothe husband and wifeteam of Ted and Norma McNamara could be unique in Australian Rules Football . They are indeed a team in every sense of the word, dedicating themselves to a wonderful family life and atthe same time sharing and assisting their beloved football Club of University Blues . Ted joined the University Blues Club after serving the former Coburg Club for many years as a Committeeman, Secretary and Team Manager. Ted is one of natures true gentleman and his Iove of amateur football is borne out bythe manner in which he is well received by officials of opposing clubs . Norma's contribution has been of equal importance to that of Ted's, in that her dedication and support to Ted's cause has enabled them to provide their fantastic support of University Blues . PAT EGAN - THERRY 1993 Certificate of Merit Winne r Pat joined the junior Club committee atTherry in 1969 and has served the junior Club as Secretary from 1971-1980 . He was President of that Club from 1980 to 1983 . Pat then joined the senior committee of Therry in 1983 and has served on that Committee continually since then, but in particular, as Secretary since 1984 . Pat is regarded as the doyen of amateur officials and is very highly regarded in the VAFA especially for his
tireless commitment to his Club, but with the amateur philosophy in mind . Pat, along with previous Certificate of Merit recipients Col Gibson, Reg Taylor and the late John Biddlestone were the four people with the influence and driveto form the Therry Corpus Christi Old Boys Football Club from which was previouslythe Glenroy Amateur Sports Club (Glenroy Amateurs) and enter the VAFA . The rise of Therry to A Grade was quite an achievement in such a short space of time and it was the people such as Pat who made it possible. The Egan family definitely have had an influence at Therry with four of Pat's sons playing for the Club . 200 GAMES AT FAWKNE R Today (3/4) Darryl Cropley plays his 200th game for Fawkner Amateurs . He joins only a handful of players at the club to do so. Darryl started playing back in 1980 with the under 19's where he played 2 seasons before moving on to the seniors . In his early days he was known as a bit of a dasher, hencethe nic-name . Overthe years injury and age have slowed him up a little but his courage and determination have never faltered . One of Darryl's greatest disappointments is never having played in a winning senior Grand Final side . Although he did appear in the Runner's up side in 1983, he is a great clubman and is always one of the first to attend club functions . The club, players and supporters all congratulate Darryl on this fine achievement - his 200th game. 'Well done'.

Welcome to what promises to be another bumper ason. Down to business straight away with Kenno's ystal ball predictions for our competition in '93 . rand Final between M HSOB and Mazenod, aulfield Grammarians beaten preliminary finalists ith the 4th spot up for grabs between a bunch of them Ajax and cluding Monash Blues, Parkside, by Kew, St ,anhoe. Cellar dweller positions filled. ilda/Sth Caulfield and Comm Bank PREVIEW - ROUND 1 (APRIL 3) Monash Blues v Kew - Whilst not predicting nything sensational from either of these teams I do elieve that the Students will be better equipped early eason than the Ks and should register a comfortable ictory at home by some 30 pts . The tactical coaching uel between two of the best in the business (Brian Ford .nd Brett Burden) should be worth witnessing . vanhoe v Caulfield Gr - The ' Hoes finished close up ast season and haven't been disadvantaged by the ippointment of 'Simmo' as coach . Their opponents, )romoted from 'D', have been well guided and groomed )ytheir mentor David Matthews and have regrouped rery well after experiencing a few years in the doldrums . Fhis game has the ingredients of a real close one and with full form undisclosed I'll tip the visitorsto get home ,vinners narrowly by 11 pts . Parkside v St KridatSth Caulfield - The hostteam, Nho didn't trouble the statistician last year, have a new -oach and several new young players to build their opes on . The visitors have yet to fire since the amalgamation and would need to improve their stocks from last season fairly substantially to make in-roads intothe competition . Without all that much confidence I'm going to favour the Red Devils, at home, to get the spoils by 18 pts . AJAX vs Mazenod - I'm sticking my head out this early and predicting Mazenod as one of the two'gunghd teams of the section along with MHSOBs . That being the case I can't tip against them in this encounter with in their ranks the Jackers. Mazenod has a lot of.depth and their trial form has been good The Jackers attime of print still had to secure the signatures of three new recruits and a couple of their regular'gu ns' have been struggling for form . Oval #2 has been the nemesis of many ateam and Mazenod might get fright at the speed out of the boxes of the Jackets . However, strength will prevail and in the final analysis the'Nodders' should salute by 4 twins . MHSOBv Comm . Bank- If'Orch','Rotten Ronnie' and'Dumbo' keep things a'rolfin down Sth Yarra way then they'll be there at the business end of the season . A lot of new faces with the Schoolers this year and having consolidated in'92 they're in very good shape to take the quantumIleap i~~93 ;On the othe r nasana
interest, just can't take a trick this year. Lack of recruiting mainly due to passers by thinking the club has vanished and/or evaporated because of lake(park beautification projects. More like a Kuwait bombfield at present, both in sight and in injuries. Loss of key players haven't helped matters either. No excuses though as both clubs will put 20 men onto the field of contest and that's where the issue will be settled . In accountancy terms MHSOB will finish in the 'black' by 12 majors . FROST KICKER S Monash Blues over the Ks by panels ; Grammar; Saints ians to topple the 'Hoes with plenty to spare a minute by a whisker against the Parkers ; Noddies by Schoolers in their clash with Jackers and finally the by light years over Bankers*. `In all seriousness, and I promise to help all clubs equally, Comm Bank is very shortlisted with players for this season and may not be able to consistently field a'full' rezzies team in each match this season . If any player within the Amateur ranks is in limbo at present I would be keen to hear from you . (Contact Nos at bottom of article) . Welcome to the 1993 football season to both new and 1 . All the hard work, both on and off the field over the ist six months now comes to fruition as the important >t bounce of the season begins . As the new D-Section scribe I wish all clubs the best r the coming season, and hope that you will support is column to the hilt by providing mewith information )out your club's performances, and player's srformances as well so that you both gain for )urselves plenty of exposure . To this effect your Club cretaries will receive some forms this week detailing formation required . If the Press Correspondents could. Ilow this it will help make both our jobs so much easier PREVIEW ROUND 1 Always hard to pick winners in Round 1, as we all test ach other out, always harder when you are writing in new section for the first time, but anyhow, here goes . o Williamstown make the trek across the bridge t ackle St Kevin's . From what I hear down the bush line )oth sides have been pretty impressive in their practise natches, but I believe that the SKOBS have also picked lp afew new players who give them some added depth . fhis combined with their home ground advantage >hould see them take the points today . No rt h Brunswick make their long awaited return to after a pretty good D-Gen . today and go in confident pre-season . Old Ivanhoe have a few coaching problems but one hears that they have been playing . I know very well, so it makes for an interesting contest my old mate Pete r Nchoice their stability wil l be the key point here . out to St Bede's make the long journey . The newly Thomastown, never a pleasure at anytime merged club are putting it together pretty well, were perhaps a bit unlucky in last year's finals and are looking to make amendsthis year. Have not heard much from, or about the Tonners as yet so it may make it just a bit hard to tip them . St Bede's to win comfortably . My new club Hampton Rovers travel to the big University oval to tackle the Uni Blacks . The Rovers have put in a pretty big pre-season and will be doing their utmost to wipe out the bitter memories of las t
season, while the Blacks will be trying to do the same . In what should be a good opener to the season, and the the lynche d and pick the bys f otm Hampto n
to win .

ROUND 1 PREVIE W Welcome to the '93 Footy Season, this year we welcome only 3 new sides into 'E' section, Old Camberwell from D' and St Leos Wattle Park and Old Essendon Grammar rise from 'F . Early preseason matches have given me a slight idea on form and from what my spies tell me, I'll make the following predictions . Elsternwick travel to Aquinas and will be eager to celebrate their remaining in 'E' with a narrow victory . The wickers have lost a couple of old stalwarts in Southy and Nicholson, however they are looking for a big year from the Contin brohers. Old Camberwell should be too strong for Old Essendon, who l have heard have lost a number of last years grand final team . Glenhuntly host St Leos who travelled thr u
'92 undefeated and President Gary Stevens is confident the team should start '93 the same way . Doveton hoping to make amends for a disappointing '92 finals series should win against ANZ and Powerhouse should take the 4 points against Bulleen in what should be the closest game of the round ,esi s victari~esrta Elste nw~cdkS0ld Camberwell, lSt Leos (evie g though Glenhuntly went thru last year undefeated), Doveton and Powerhouse . EXCEPTIONAL 100 GAMES TO UNCLE NOEL CARTLEDG E At 43 years of age, Bulleen United's oldest centurian Noel Cartledge is as fit as a mallee bull, and plays the straight ahead bull type of game too . That age may be exceptonal, but this week the Bulls have recruited his son Jason to play his first game alongside him . Uncle only started when he was 38, who knows how many games he has played for other teams . One of the first blokes picked each week, captain of the resies and back pocket, the nuggetty old uncle might look mean and tough enough to eat alive those timid forwards, but team mates can vouch for his toughness when they have the misfortune to be in one of the packs that Noel bowls over or hit by a ricocheting body as he sets his sights on the ball . Congratulations from everyone at Bulleen, Uncle, and may you lead out the side many more years .

is that time again . Time to dust the premiership )hies, unfurl the flags and take to the battlefield once ain . t Leo's and O . Essendon have left usfor bigger and ter things, Latrobe Uni have joined us, and the everanging F-Grade has once again undergone a nsformation ; thistime, into atwo-tiered F1/F2 section . Jn paper F1 promises to be a very tough and mpetitive section with all teams having a strong ance at being finals contenders . 5t Mary's and Old Carey will be looking to dominate - section this year after their disappointing finals mpaigns last season, while St Pat's, West Brunswick d St Andrew's will all be aiming to improve on their 92 efforts . The all-important first round is certain to set the tone r the season and separate the pre-season workers )m the cricketers . PREVIEW Latrobe Uni and Old Carey will both have something d their first round clash at Bundoora . The cently-demoted =demote Latrobe have picked up a number new players from the University and have performed ell in pre-season matches, but I feel Old Carey will be en to put last year behind them and get off to a strong art with a 10 goal win . At Dandenong, St John's will play host to a revitalised well and have lest Brunswick who have recruited ained a welcome influx of old players . An encouraging ractice match performance last week against Digger's est and the re-appointment of coach Paul Hickey, will ee the Brunswick Boys ease to a 4 goal victory. A mass exodus of players overseas and a poor preeason will see Salesians undermanned and utclassed by Peninsula, who are looking for a better ear under their re-appointed coach, Rod Kerley . The 'irates will sail home by 6 goals and will be a definite nals contender this year. St Mary's and St Pat's will fight it out at Glen Iris in vhat is always atough physical contest. St Mary's, under he coaching of former Richmond player DickClay, got ip comfortably against an undermanned St Pat's side 3 weeks ago and will be surprised and overcome by a stronger opponent this time around . New St Pat's oach Brett Sebire admitted his team has had a Jisappointing pre-season but expects a "strong . showing" this week . St Pat's should get home by 28 pts will sweat it out at Parkville rew's and St And UHSOB in what should be the closest game of the round . UHSOB's Laurie Thornelowe will be looking for continued improvement from last year's team and should get it with a 5 pt win . Goodluck to all teams in what should be a very

Hello to all Ammo supporters for season 1993 and a big welcome to the six new teams who will make up this grade with the new name F2 Section . Being six months sincethe last game I hope all the batteries have recharged and everyone's in for a big year . Congrats go to Brian Woodhead on being administrator for this year for the VAFA and I know he will do a fine job. Also to last year's administrator, Mike McArthur-Allen (Super Coach) - good luckto you with the job at Ormond and hope you can take them back up the ladder. Looking resthi forward to F sIkRonSmthPet rHare asecrandhopetheyhaev a big year. Getting back to football, especially in the first few rounds, it will be very hard to select winners as we have a lot of new sides in the grade. So don't feel hard done by if I don't select you, and you win easily . It's going to be like the blind leading the blind for the first few rounds. PREVIEW d Ex ESCFA sides Oakleigh and Balwyn Combine clash in what should be a close game at home. Oakleigh should be victorious by 4 goals . Ex'G' Grader Old Westbourne, who I hear have had good match practice form take on Yarra Valley in what should be a great game. At home Old Westbourne. should be too accomplished and win easily by 10 goals Boronia Park travel to another ex ESCFA side, Canterbu ry Nth Balwyn in what should be a great game . The Parkers, after a dismal year last year, will be hoping for a good start to the season whereas C/NB, with home ground advantage, should come out the winner by 4 goals. VUT/FIT play ex 'G' Grader Camberwell out at Footscray, but with home ground advantage VUT/FIT should win comfortably by 6 goals . In the last game Uni Reds travel to Richmond Central in the match of the day . Centrals, who have picked up a lot of good players this season, will be too talented for Uni Reds at this stage and should win comfortably by 6 goals . NOTE : Club Functions will be placed in this column if club secretaries ring me 9am to 5pm on 398 5098 with all details .

IAN ENGLAND"- OLD CAREY GRAMMARIANS 1993 Ce rt ificate of Merit Winne r Ian 'Ocka' England has given outstanding service to the Old Carey Grammarians Club since 1969. He served the Club as a player until 1988, having played 326 games, which is a Club record . Ian captained the Reserves for 10 years and was Captain/Coach for 4 years, and during that time he led by example and won the Reserves Best and Fairest on five occasions . Off-field, Ian has made a vital contribution to the Club in a variety of ways. He was a member of the Committee for four years . He has been the Club's major donor of prizesfor raffles etc for the past 12 years, and the money raised from those donations has helped in no small way to keep us financially viable . He took on the Club's Reserve Umpiring in 1990 and has now umpired 47 VAFA games. Ian is a model of the very dedicated Club people who help the amateur clubs and the competition to maintain the level we have come to experience.

U19 SECTIONS by Max Lyon s
It hardly seems like 6 months have passed since I put pen to paper wrapping up our great Centenary Year the highlight of which was undoubtedly our fantastic win in the Vic Health Under 19 Championships. Anyway we re back into it again and I would like to firstly welcome our new club St Leo's whose senior team made a sensational debut in 1992 . Also, good to see NOBs back with us again . Regrettably we will not be able to defend the title we won in the Vic Health C'ships!ast year as they have been replaced by the Caltex Cup this year and we will be represented by an Under 18 team at this event on 8th/9th May. (We will be playing an Under 19 representative game against the VFA on July 13th) . However, the selection of a squad for the Caltex Cup is a matter of urgency and I need all clubs to advise me or Brett Conne!l at HQ of any players - born on or after 1/1/75 -that you believe to be up to representation standard. THIS IS URGENT - WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division One As always, selections in Round One are based on guess work and rumours but no logic - it doesn't change all year! Nodders are at home to Bernies and I think they can continue on from their excellent debut year in Division One and get the points from Terry's troops who always start the season well but the 'bus lag' from Keilor to Mulgrave will be too much for them today. De La are at home to OMs who also had a good year in '92 but I'm sure Les and his boys would have wished for an easier opener than the D's at East Malvern . Ormond are at home to the Eagles who are putting Scotts recruiting skills to the greatest test yet in his 3 years at the helm . Even though the Monds persist in playing their best U/19's in the 'two's', I think they will have enough '!eft overs' to get the points today . Tones after a mediocre year in '92 have disappointed preseason and, even though Brendan reckons the Parkers are lambs to the slaughter this year, I expect them to get a first up win today. As much as I would like to see the first of my ' proteges' to take up the coaching reins get a win first up, I can't see Lobba's boys getting the points against the defending champs. SELECTIONS : Mazenod, De LaSalle, Ormond, Chirnside Park, O.Xars . Division 2 South I expect all 4 games in this section to be really evenly matched so selections are purely guesswork. High's coach Ray McGi!l knows what winning is all about '85 was a great year wasn't it Ray! I thought Steve's Ashers played some of the best footy I saw in '92 and ! think they might sneak home today. Rovers have been slow getting the numbers together but ! believe that the
quality of those numbers will be enough to win today. The winners of the other 2 games can only be fluke selections for me . I think Bedes have got the quantity but Tonners might(?) have the quality. When in doubt the home side. Scotchies early matches last year were close with the wrong results and 1 think they might suffer the same fate today against Collegians who were often competitive in the higher division . Jackers have the bye. SELECTIONS: Monash, Hampton, Rovers, St Bedes, Collegians . Division 2 Central Interesting game the first on the list . O. Parade versus NOBs. Alex and I both expected a!ittle better of the Bundoora boys last year and I'm sure he's determined to see them record their successes of past years . Jim will be keen to repeat NOBs good record of the past but ! think he'll have to delay that pleasure for another week . At the time of writing the Bullants are struggling for numbers and I couldn't see them giving my preseason premiership favourites, Therry, a run for their money. Frog's OTs nearly made the finals in '92 and I'm sure hell !earn from their hiccups then and get home from the Friars today. Blacks had a disappointing year last year but I expect them to kick off on a good note against the 'Hoes whose best U/19's are key players in their 'ones' Old Carers, a little unlucky to miss the finals in '92, should be too strong for Old' Hoes whose best Ut19's will also be in their 'ones' . Defending premiers, Old C'well, face the Blues who almost took their place in the Grand Final last year. This game should be a ripper. Blues to win by a point kicked on the final siren . St Leo's have the bye . SELECTIONS : O .Parade, Therry, O.Trinity, U.Blacks, U .Blues, O.Carey. Slab Challene starts next round (too hard today) . Finally, a request to all club team managers, coaches, secretaries of the winning teams to ring me on 568 4727 on Sat/Sun (don't hang up on the answering machine if you cop it!) or fax on Monday morning on 646 0872 (please don't ring me at work) with details of your 2 or 3 best players, highlights and major goal kickers (4 or more) . Also, a cha!!enge to Norm ' Hagar' Nugent from Peter, the 'F' Grade guru, for a3 way contest between us on U/19 Div 1, F2 + G Nth or Sth (you sti!l owe me a slab Norm!) .

t A Practical Approach to Performance Enhancemen A great new practical book has been written by Anthony Stewart and I recommend it highly to all coaches and players within the VAFA . Anthony Stewart is a Melbourne sports psychologist who currently works with the Hawthorn Football Club, the Australian Netball Team and the Victorian Institute of Sport. He has also worked professionally with leading athletes, swimmers, lifesavers, AFL Umpires, and various football squads including some VAFA clubs . He has also lectured extensively in various coach education programs . The aim of the book is to develop an understanding of the various aspects of mental preparation and their importance for success in sporting pursuits . Strategies for learning and employing mental skills are provided so that participants can reach their PERSONAL BESTS . The book has received very high praise from many sportspeople . It is recommended by the Hawthorn Football Club, Carlton Football Club Senior Coach, David Parkin, Simon O'Donnell, and National Netball Coach Joyce Brown . Each chapter outlines a different aspect of mental training and includes practical hints, suggestions, exercises, checklists, and quotes from successful sports people. Some of the factors that stand out in such people are : • Goal setting : they set specific goals each day - for training, for competition and for personal life . • Training : they arrive early, leave late, and participate fully in all activities. They emphasise quality and quantity of effort ; they set the standard, they aim to be the best at each drill; they challenge fellow performers and develop a healthy competitiveness against them ; they volunteer for difficult exercises and promote 'fearlessness' . • Mental preparation : they schedule periods for relaxation and imagery each day and prepare mentally to get the most out of each training session . They see themselves successfully accomplishing all desired tasks . This keeps their best performances fresh in their minds.
• Lifestyle : they respect and listen to their bodies and accept the messages the body sends . They rest well and provide proper and adequate nutrition for it . • Self belief: they develop and maintain an honest and realistic self belief . They review achievements as reminders of why they have reached current levels . • Enjoyment : they remember that success is ajourney and not a destination . They enjoy what they achieve short term with increased endeavour, confidently expect to experience further success in the future . Topics covered in the book include handling failure, self-responsibility, self-image, goal setting, motivation, concentration, overcoming injury, confidence, visualisation, relaxation, and coping with stress . Far from being a technical, hard-to-read text book, Personal Best is designed to be user-friendly with easy to understand instructions and explanations . Real-life examples of recent events with photos of sports heroes, and cartoon illustrations give the reader a closer feel of how mental attitude and motivation can improve performance . How to get your copy Available at $19 .95 (add $3 for postage) from * Melbourne Sports Book s 9 Elizabeth Street, Melbourn e Phone 621 1211 (Ask for Santo Caruso) * Hawthorn Football Clu b 30 Linda Crscent, Hawthorn Phone 819 219 9 This is the most practical book I have encountered in my experience in sport when it comes to explaining in easily understood language the value of mind control and its relevance to the level of your performance . It is a mustto coaches who pridethemselves on being well prepared . Remember : 'One of Iifes most painful moments comes when we have to admit we didn't do our homework, that we were not prepared : M ike McArthur-Allen Senior Coach, Ormond AFC

MARKETING NEWS by Phil Stevens
The theme of the 1993 Sponsor's Night, held last Wednesday night at Elsternwick park, was for our clubs in 1993 to "BUY RIGHT" in 1993 . All Club Presidents attended the night at which we introduced our sponsors to our clubs and encouraged them to support VAFA sponsors where possible during the year. By doing this we retain sponsors for next year and beyond thus earning costs can be kept at a manageable level . If support (ie business is not generated from their/support and to meet ongoing costs the VAFA will have to lift affiliation fees. By doing this an important part of Amateur football would be lost - that is, that only successful and financial clubs could participate . Currently football for a large group and cross section of clubs and players is available at a relatively low cost . So the message is clear to clubs to not necessarily buy more but to buy right in 1993 . In 1993 club supportwill be monitored and it is hoped that future affiliation fees can perhaps be linked to sponsor support . For example, a club providing wonderful support for sponsors would be charged significantly less in fees and a club showing little or no support would be charged more than the norm . Rebate cheques always reward clubs for sponsor support as well, and in the past clubs have received chequesfor measurable support shown for purchases of Schweppes drinks, purchases of Four 'n' Twenty pies through Summit Canteen Supplies, purchases through Hugh Lyon Knitwear and a share of profit from VAFA Properties, through which clubs must purchase footballs (Sherrin), shorts and jumpers . Rebate cheques will be made healthier this year as the following prizemoney on offer will be added to the normal rebate cheque which will be presented to clubs at the 1994 Sponsors' Night . • $500 for the club winning the Four'n'Twenty Club Championship (to qualify clubs must be able to demonstrate a'real' support for Four 'n' Twenty) ; •$1,000, $750 and $250 for the Top 3 clubs whose players and officials spend most at Beaurepaires stores before September 30 ; • a rebate based on club support for new sponsor A-One Sports Photography ; • plus a special Sportscover cash prize which will be launched in this column in the next cou ple of issues . These prizes will be increased as sponsors see th e extra benefits of giving tangible rewards to clubs wh o
In fact I can see a number of clubs receiving cheques of well over $1,200 in 1994 . Again BUY RIGHT IN 1993 - SUPPORT AS MANY OF THE SPONSORS LISTED BELOW AS POSSIBLE . SPONSORSHI P MAJOR SPONSOR S L T NTAH ®HAL Si VICES V CTORI A Dental Health Services Victorian Health Victoria LEVEL

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundl e
ROUND i 5 YEARS AGO - 198 8 The Executive welcomed 'Mr Parkside', Tom Johnston to its ranks . Tom was elected to the casual vacancycaused bythe resignation of Ray Walsh, who had returned to his club Marcellin Old Collegians . Tom became the third Parkside member to serve on the Executive, his predecessors were Lionel Pepper (1946-62) and Brian Lauder (1975-79) . (Lionel, sadly, was killed in 1962 by an electrical fauit. Brian has been away from Victoria for many years but attended the 1992 finals and renewed friendships . NR) . Jim Hawkins again led the Association as President with Richard Elliott again as Executive Chairman . After his speech at the Umpires Pre-season Dinner at Brighton Yacht Club, the umpires were not sure whether Jim was a Golf Pro or Businessman . 1988's Umpire Advisor, Neville N ash, had been appointed by the VFL as Umpires' Administrator in Brisbane . His successor was David L evens, former VFL umpire, whose experience in football included a stint as President of the Warracknabeal Football Club . Wayne Henry, on meeting David, suggested that the 1988'A' Section Grand Final team could be : Field, Norm Nugent, Peter Harris ; Boundary, Wayne Henry, Stan Kalin; Goal, Robert Bell, with Noel Rundle to help out . (What does it say about David Levens' appearance? Bad luck, Benny, we couldn't find a place for you . NR .) . Old Xaverians provided the surprise in round 1 when they reversed the 1987 Grand Final defeat by Ormond . One goal ahead at half time, O .X . kicked 10.2 to 4.6 in the second half . Best for O.X. were Nick Bourke (9 gis), Anthony Callan, Sam Furphy, Danny Meagher, Rick Marks (former Ajax and VAFA star) and Laurie Meehan, Gilmore, Best and Sutherland served the' Monds well . Ormond newcomers, Andrew Jobling and Steve Carboon, made quiet debutes . 1987 'C' Premiers Monash Blues, got home in 'B' section by 7 pts in a 'thriller' against Caulfield Grammarians, 13 .11 to 12.10. Best were Zacharidis, Barker, Sturgess (M .B.) and Armstrong, Royals, Bettany (C .G .) . Closest game was in'D' where Buiteen-United, 25 pts ahead of North Brunswick at the first change, saw their lead whittled away quarter by quarter and then managed to hang on to win by 2 pts, 13 .9 to 13 .7. The stars were Empey, Jenkins, Graham (B .U .) and Balazsy, Samatore, Nirosi (N .B .) . First round 'A' Section umpires were Mark Bushfield, Steve McCarthy, Justin Toohey, Steve Clinch, Paul Cherry, Cameron Schwarb, Andrew McRae, Ken Coughlan, Greg Hardiman, Kevin Segota . 10 YEARS AGO - 1983 Williamstown & Preston joined the Association in Junior Section 1 whist Assumption Old Collegians
withdrew from the competition on the even of the season . Former Reservoir Old Boys, Old Scotch, and 1983 Old Melburnians Coach Laurie Aghan has been appointed coach of the interstate team . (In 1988 we are pleased to see that Laurie has rejoined the VAFA as Coach of Old Scotch U19 team) . Ritchie Halassa, Peter Murphy & Gavin White, and Executive Member, David Sco tt were appointed as State selectors . Peter French had joined the Association as general manager. Jim Hawkins was chairman of the Umpires' committee (Oh - to what heights men can rise - Jim is 1988 VAFA president) . Richard Tracey was president of the Umpires' Association . Doug Cuttriss created club history at Old Ivanhoe by lining up for his 300th game capping a distinguishing career in which he won two club best and fairests and was a member of the 1973 premiership team . Collegians shocked 1982 premiers, N ort h Old Boys with a 7 goal win, 19.10 to 13.8 . Best were Daff, Cook, Griffiths (Collegians) & Considine, Butera, Weir (North O.B.) . 15 YEARS AGO - 197 8 The opening of Season 1978 saw a number of changes, Jack & Norma Fullerton retired after 27 years of dedicated service. Taking over as Secretary was Alf Keam, whose participation in amateur football started in 1940, and who has been a devoted and active member of his Club, M HSOB since that date . Manson Russell & Alex Johnson had been appointed President and Executive Chairman respectively, 'A' Section matches saw the introduction of two field umpires . The Reinstatement Committee has been in operation using the recently restructured definition of amateurism . Peter O'Donohue was appointed State Coach fo r the matches to be played in Melbourne on Queen's Birthday Weekend . Chairman of Selectors was Don McQueen . Clayton made its debut in Amateur Football . Old Scotch & Ivanhoe returned to 'A' Section with strong wins over Ormond & Marcellin O.C. 20 YEARS AGO - 197 3 The season saw the introduction of the 'Square', with the diagonal corners at centre half forward and centre half back, andthe other corners on the wing . New Clubs Fawkner & Thornbury were welcomed while reappearances were made by University Reds (F) & Old Paradians, Parkside (Junior) . St Bernard's reported on their 1972 grand final breakfast at which Peter Hutchinson of Powerhouse received a presentation as Amateur Football Personality

'I TMPIRES CORNER by Mike Murray and Steve McCarthy • Welcome back all you umpire-lovers out there. Fine tune your voices - the footy season is upon us again . We;ll be here to bring you all the hot news and views behind the scenes and in the centre circle with the umpiring fraternity. • Starting on a serious note, we must inform you of this year's VAFAUA officer bearers : Mike Murray President Peter Keogh Vice P re sident Secreta ry Andrew Kilner Asst . Secreta ry John Kelly Stephen Hopper Treasurer Social Secreta ry Richard Simon Member Kevin Segota Andrew Belche r Executive Wayne Henry Justin Toohey Pro pert y Steward Geoff Ridd David Hindl e Auditor and of cours e Mike Murray & Steve McCarthy Press Correspondents (elected unopposed) Please give your elected members the supportthey deserve and the Umpires' Association will have another successful season . • A few changes in personnel over the summer months. Tim Bell is unable to continue in his role as assistant advisor due to study commitments and has been replaced by Russell Francis. The goalies have picked up Gary Baumga rten to replace the retired Kevin Barker. We wish Rusty and Boom-Boom well in their new roles . At headquarters we see our ex-advisor Brian Woodhead moving into the chair vacated by Mike McArthur-Allen . We're sure Woody will enjoy his new venture (footy 7 days a week), and we know that Mike will be comfortable in his old coach's box at Malane St . We wish them much success in their new ventures . • Snippets from the off-seaso n Peter `Rags' Keogh taking Chuck's runners for a run at Dendy Park after he'd forgotten his own . While on 'Rags; our ex-secretary last year sent an invitation for the PUMPS function to a deceased member (over 2 years) . New goal umpire Wayne Henry was keen to attend his first meeting - he arrived a week early . The Aquathon was held at Brighton beach with Mark
Bushfield being the winner. Obviously saved himself because he refused to save wife Chris as she fell to a cramp during the warm-up. Lucky one of we scribes was there to help her out of the water. (It wasn't Mike!) • News fro m practice matches : Richie Simon was observed recently by BB and we askthe question "How high is a reflex tackle?" Robbie Bell found that something was missing from his umpiring bag before a recent game at Mentone . He jumped on the car phone and a mate dropped his white jocks in at half-time . Don't ask about the first half ! • A big night last Thursday week at the AGM/Preseason Dinner. A terrific night and congratulations to Richie and his committee who made it such a success . Highlights of the night: Wisey seen drinking "light" - Vin Vescovi winning the Woody Award - Brendan Corcoran handing over the White Wackato Frank Martinez in a moving speech (we all wanted to move out of the room) - The AG M over in 19 minutes (a world record) - Wisey won the raffle for the first time in eight years and chose the slab (24 travellers) . • A big thank you to the VAFA for inviting we scribes to the Presidents, Secretaries & Members night at the Southern Cross last Monday . A fantastic night with a large number of umpires in attendance . Where was Stud? It's amazing - even a function like this has an after-match . I'd say it was a blood-shot Tuesday morning for most people there . All the best to the new scribes and `Hazza' (promoted from 'E Street' to the 'D Generation') . • One of the quotes of the year sofar- "no problems with the showers - we've got two rooms" - Dirk Kramer . • A huge pat on the back to Steve Hopper on a professional presentation of the Annual Report . Well done Hopps! • Social Repo rt - April 10th VAFA Race Day. April 18th VAFAUA Golf Day. • Remember if you have anything you feel should appear in the column contact Mike or Mecca. Any milestones, weddings, engagements, births etc . or we II make something up . Umpire profiles will be back soon . • Have a great 1993, all umpires and clubs from Ajax to Yarra Valley - see you at the after-match . Mike & Macca
