EDITORIAL by Phil Steven s

A terrific final round of matches in A section last weekend saw no last minute "bolter" stealing a spot in the four but vindicated a view held by many that any of the 4 sides - De La Salle, Old Xaverians, North Old Boys or Collegians could take out this year's A section flag . The action towards the bottom of the ladder was a bit more hectic however, as three sides - Old Scotch, St Bernards and Old Brighton - were engaged in two matches, the results meaning that one of the three teams would tumble down to B section with Old Trinity . As it turned out St Bernards defeated flag aspirant Collegians, thus saving them from relegation, meaning that the loser of the Old Brighton vs Old Scotch match would go down . As it turned out Old Brighton couldn't match it with Old Scotch on the day. It would be remiss of me not to recognise the magnificent performance of St Bernards, who with their backs to the wall had to win the last three matches to avoid relegation - that they did so was a tremendous credit to the club's determination and willingness to give a difficult task "their best shot". Speaking of the dreaded relegation, the following sides are to be relegated in season 1994 - Old Brighton and Old Trinity (from A to B), Whitefriars and Fawkner (from B to C), Parkside and Commonwealth Bank (from

C to D), Hampton Rovers and North Brunswick (from D to E), Elsternwick and ANZ Bank (from E to F), West Brunswick and Old Carey (from F1 to G) . The VAFA's "frustrated" tipster predicts the following (with the predicted section in bold CAPITALS and the other grand finalists in normal bold) . A SECTION : De La Salle, O. REVIEW The final four may well have been set a week befor e the last game, but it certainly took the full 18 games to find out who was going to be relegated with O . Trinity. St Bernards were all but certainties to drop a grade , but they showed enormous desire and character to avoid this plight . Brighton were, at one stage, knocking on the door to the four - then the wheels completely fell off . It seems that the 1 pt loss in "double extra overtime" shattered the confidence of the boys from South Road and despite being awarded the pts for their clash against St Bernards, the Tonners had lost the plot . So, once again, the two promoted sides have returned from whence they came. Old Scotch obviously reacted to the writing on the wall with an inspired victory at the Beach Oval . Brighton just trailed at every change, but should have been well down at 1/2 time. The Cardinals had too much spirit and with big Tom Wilson firing and Ken Stokes gathering many possessions at ground level, Scotch notched a well earnt victory that ultimately saw them stay in A-section . Collegians lost their 2nd game on the trot when St Bernards fought to an 11 pt victory . The win was a great boost for the club that had "its back to the wall". However, Leigh Carlson wouldn't have been too pleased with his team's form on the eve of the finals . Rich Schober played a lone hand for the Lions booting 5 goals, but Collegians were torn apart by Wayne Carey, Trevor Spencer and Rob Purcell and 18 others who were willing to have a go. The reigning premiers appear to have afew problems which had better be faced quickly, or elsethey will finish their season today. Ormond had De La Salle on a plate, but only managed to register 2 behinds in an ordinary final term fade out . De La needed to win as they too were in line to lose their 2nd game in a row. Sam Hunter and Danny Smith provided the stability that ensured a win . The Ormond State players - Jobling and Connell - were in everything, but in the end, ran out of helpers . Ormond can look to '94 with a great deal of enthusiasm . They have blooded some great talent that we are yet to see the best of . De La aren't playing at their peak and will need to find some of that magic if they are to go "all the way". The O . Haileyburians remain the enigma of Asection. A massive victory over O. Trinity capped of an impressive run home. Glenn Tanner had a field day as did Peter Thiessen, Chris McKenzie and Dave Connell - all the players they need firing all year! Trinity's best was once again Adam Anderson - he is a terrific player! But put simply, Trinty were not quite up to it this year they weren't far off, though . The Bloods lost track in the first 10 weeks of the season and perhaps they need the services of somebody to get inside their heads. Sure, the ability is there, but the application is the worst in the competition - they are capable of so much more, and have been so for two years - maybe next year ? The form side is now North Old Boys with successive victories over Collegians and the Xaverians as proof that they are on fire. Damien Cerini kicked 6 from full

fwd, Bruno Conti had a picnic in the centre and Brent Clayton controlled the game from chb. It was a tough game and all too often the Xavs were second to the ball - maybe they just had a bit of a holiday after beating De La the week before. Still, it's not what they would've wanted, whereas North could not have got a better final game present . The finals are sure to be interesting . PREVIEW Today we see a form side take on an out-of-form side. Not only that, but the form side easily beat the out-ofform side 2 weeks ago . Collegians have great experience, especially in the finals, they are the reigning premiers, but where is their fire power? When we look a the '92 premiership side and take out Steve Mount, Tony Parkin, DannyThomson and Steve Laussen, they haven't really been replaced . North wentthrough the horrors mid season when they lost six in a row, but to their credit, Robert Hyde has got them back on the rails and maybe bound for glory . North's strength appears to be in the midfield where Bruno Conti, Tom Jones and Paul Booth have provided great drive. Today they come up against Mark Hibbins, Matt Galbraith and David Hoyle . These match ups will be worth watching, but on form North should hold a slight edge. The rucks will see Steve Brazil take on Brett Jefferson and or Chris Pollock . Either way they appear to be way behind him in ability and form . Both teams have lacked potency up forward . Recently North has had Cerini and Considine kicking goals . Boyle started well but faded. Collegians have Milat, but he has contested well without doing much damage to the scoreboard . Schober and Lake have kicked a few goals in recent weeks but they cannot be relied on to carry the responsibility of kicking a winning score. Why Hoyle doesn't stay in the forward pocket amazes me, as he seems to have a knack of kicking goals. The Collegian defence is very good . James Bennett is a dasher, Andrew Wright is reliable, Stuart Hinchen is solid and Brad Woolhouse is a goer. This is the Collegian strength! North have a less noted defence but Brent Ciayton and Bernie Girolami are fairly consistent, however the other members of the defence seem to change every week - we'll have too wait and see how they line up today. So where are we now? North are in form, but Collegians have a great defence. The Lions have the experience and North the exuberance . I'm always one to go on form as you are only as good as your last start . For this reason I'll go with North and it should be a great game. NOBs by 9 pts .

Having commenced with the club in 1987, Marcus has been a real stalwart and one of the most popular members of the club. Equally at home at CHB or CHF, Marcus lists the 1991 A Grade GF as the highlight of his career at NOBs . Recruited from Benalla, Marcus is playing his best football at the moment and is hoping that NOBs can pull off the 1993 Premiership. Congratulations Marcus on a great career and all at North wish you the best of luck in the future .

The Rover' last week made some tips regarding the C-F2 Finals. Let's see how right we were : C Section : True to form Ajax proved too good for MHSOB, as was tipped, and live on to play the loser of Mazenod and Ivanhoe next weekend . D Section: Old Ivanhoe thumped Uni Blacks showing they mean business and will eagerly await their clash with either Old Geelong or St Bedes/Mentone Tigers . E Section : Old Camberwell overcame all odds and ran out victors against Glenhuntly, so ending Glenhuntly's season. St Leo's jumped two grades in two years moving to D section next year while Doveton and Old Camberwell fight out the remaining position . F1 Section : St Andrews lost a thriller to Peninsula OB by 3 pts at Mordialloc, and St Mary's against the grain defeated favourites St John's at Camberwell . This leaves St John's to take on Peninsula OB for the right to join St Mary's in E section in 1994 . F2 Section : Yarra Valley finished too strong for Richmond Central and Oakleigh defeated Uni Reds comfortably to advance to F Section next season . Uni Reds take on Yarra Valley in the Prelim Final today . U19 Central : Old Carey handed out a football lesson to Uni Blues and so keeping their finals hopes alive. U19 South : St Bedes/Mentone Tigers lost to Collegians who kicked the straighter and won comfortably in the end . Now let us take a look at head-to-head this weekend : A Section : NOBs take on Collegians at EP tomorrow (Sun) in what shapes as an even contest . With a win each, both at each others home grounds, the ledger is square. NOBs seem to be on a high . PdOBs for mine . B Section : U ni Blues do not have a great track record against O . Mentonians so far this season and will struggle today to keep in the race for A-Section . C Section: M azenod have been the measuring stick all year. They were given a scare by Ivanhoe at Ivanhoe Park in the 2nd half of the year, but deserve their favourite tag today at the Lakeside Oval . D Section : Out at Brunswick Old Geelong battle St Bedes/Mentone Tigers for promotion to C Section in '94 . With two wins against the OGsthis season and so much hinging on today St Bedes/Mentone Tigers will have the edge, but it will be tight .

E Section : Old Camberwell shape as a tough opposition today for Doveton who have not beaten the ' Wellers once this season . Finals are a different story and I believe Doveton will win to have another crack at St Leos . F1 Section : St John's, after dropping the 2nd semi surprisingly, take on PeninsulaOB at Mordialloc . Having not defeated Peninsula in their 2 meetings so far and Peninsula having played at Mordialloc last week, they might have enough to push them over the line . The Pirates for mine . F2 Section : Uni Reds take on Yarra Valley at Northcote Park . Both sides meet today for the second time this year. The first Uni Reds were victorious by some 4 goals and will continue on the tradition today . U19/1 : St Bernards, the fast movers in the 2nd half of the season, take on Old Xavs at the Junction Oval . Having been thumped at home St Bernards turned the result around to finish the year strongly . To go with a roughy, St Bernards to continue their roll . U19 Central : Old Paradians take on NOBs in the battle for the 1st Grand Final spot . They met in Rd 1 where O . Paradians trounced NOBs. But NOBs have improved considerably, but not enough to win today . U19 South : With a win a piece both 0 . Brighton and Ajax can approach this game with no reservations . Ajax finished the year well, where 0 . Brighton faltered slightly. Ajax for mine. Now that all home-and-away matches are complete, relegated from the Sections were: A Section : 0. Brighton and Trinity B Section : Whitefriars and Fawkne r C Section : Parkside and Comm . Ban k D Section : Hampton Rovers and Nth Brunswick E Section : Elsternwick and ANZ Ban k F1 Section : West Brunswick and Old Carey Leading goal kickers : (A) Rod Heath (OT 57); (B) Adam Acreman (OM 86), (C) Ralph Bergman (StK 70), (D) Mark Crawford (HR 83), (E) Michael Dyke (Dov .108), F1) Rob Cincotta (Sal . 81), (F2) Matt Forrest (Oak. 101) . Under 19 and Club XVIII winners next week .

B SECTION by David Hollan d REVIEW Banyule finished the'93 season in shocking fashio n going down to Therry by 76 pts . Adam McKay stood in for Zanetti and booted 9 gis in as uperb display whilst he was well fed by Tim Taylor and Mick Goodwin midfield . Therry led at every change and outclassed the Bears whose best were John Gillham at CHB, Peter Adams and Stu Coulson . The Bears can thank their lucky stars they're not in C Grade next year after an inconsistent and disappointing season . Their main problem was the lack of a class full forward but the rest boils down to simple mental attitude . Therry enjoy a week off before the 2nd Semi . Old Mentonians got in some goal kicking practice atthe Mutton Reserve when they gave Fawks a hiding . Leading the goal spree was Acreman who booted 12, breaking records in the process . Hard to pick a bad Panther with Solley, Bournon, D . Murphy and Campbell all putting in great games . For Fawks, Rob Lawson & Less Cohen were the best as per usual . Recruiting a rebuilding are the tasks at hand for Fawks now as they prepare for their return to C Grade. The game that counted for everything for both sides turned out a nailbiter between Uni Blues and Whitefriars . U ni led at 1/4 time but Friars were up at the next 2 breaks . In a thrilling last term the Blues hung on to win by 6 pts and snatch a finals birth, leaving Friars to join Fawks in C Grade . Could have been a different story if Friars had shown their recent excellent form earlier on -they'll win the C Grade flag next year if they continue this form . Until 1/2 time, the OMs vs Parade clash was a ripper, however after the main break, OMs showed all class and ran away to a comfortable 39 pt win . OMs signs are ominous and dangerous with their guns all in good touch - Nicholls, Thompson, Teal, Witts etc, were brilliant along with "JPY" Boyden who dominated in defence . Parade are masters at undesirable lapses and that has seen their lack of consistent success this year. Brett Pannam and Nathan Willitts have enjoyed good seasons and continued last week with 4 great quarters each . Bulleen/Temp, sniffing 4th spot, made a great comeback to run out 9 pt victors over Marcellin who, once again, proved they can't play 4'/as of footy . In a low scoring game, Bullants, had 2 .11 on the board at 3/4 time to Eagles 6 .10 . The inevitable happened and the Bullants invaded the Eagle nest and took over . "Pants" Panou and "Hollywood" Harvie finished off great seasons for the 'Ants whilst the Eagles best were Gill, Steve Psoras and Freddy Wooler (again) . Bad luck for Bullants who had a topsy turvy year, but finished off pretty well whereas Eagles can lookforward to many young players leading their '94 B Grade campaign . ist SEMI FINAL PREVIEW One season finishes and, today, another begins . 4 teams now have the opportunity to take their Clubs into A Section in '94 and further, take along a B Grade flag . This is finals footy now - an entirely different ball game ! Leading proceedings is Old Mentonians and Uni Blues who clash in the sudden death 1st Semi at Headquarters today. A suggestion at the 1/2 way mark

of '93 that the Blues would be involved come finals time would have raised eyebrows as they had just 4 wins on the board and had lost to Friars and Fawks . Since then, Grant Williams has turned his charges around and seen a huge improvement with just 2 losses for the remainder of the year. The Panthers, on the other hand, did almost the reverse, winning 7 of their 1st 9 then falling in a hole with losses to Friars, Bullants, Therry and OMs . Their last 2 outings have, however, instilled more confidence in themselves and their own ability . I believe this game will be won or lost in the centre where both sides have many options but it will be the man on man duels that will decide respective fates . Panthers' Ruckman Campbell and Paterson have proved an excellent combination this year, combining skill with strength and success in the pivot will be relied heavily upon their duel with Jim Buckley and/or Bob Steele. Feeding from the ruckmen are many options Panthers have Sly, Davis, Solley and Bournon whilst the Blues will look to Worlsey, Kanis, Harris and Cavalier. Up forward the Blues have two primary targets in Hutchins and Taylor but they have formidable opponents in Darren Murphy and Stuart Farrow, who is certain to return after a long breakthrough injury . Atthe other end Acreman and Stroud hold the key for the Panthers and likewise will have their work cut out against either McIntyre, Hazeldine or O'Brien who are all very strong defenders. The wide open spaces of EP will suit wingman Dickson and Tim Harris - both are prolific ball getters and this will also prove a telling duel . In weighing up respective strengths and weaknesses, I feel thatthe Panthers edge-outthe Blues overall as their backline is physically tougher with the likes of Macquire (100th game), Brooks, and Mullin, and more talented up forward . The side who settles first will obviously have the edge but finals nerves are hard to shake and until then the game often becomes a mad scramble for kicks . In the final analysis, the Panthers should gain a Prelim birth after a 13 pt win to a game. Good luck to both sides, coaches and Clubs for the day. May the best team win ! Below are my selections for the B Section B&F and the top 3 vote getters for each club : Banyule - Gillham, Carroll, Williams ; Bulleen(Temp - Mathews, Tulloch, Agosta ; Fawkner - Lawson, L . Cohen, McMahon ; Marcellin - Ryder, Psoras, Wooler; Old Melburnians - Webb, Useinov, Thompson A ; Old Mentonians - Stroud, Bournon, Solley ; Old Paradians - Canavan, Pannam, Phillip ; Therry Goodwin, Petrevski, Taylor ; Uni Blues - McIntyre, Hazeldine, T. Harris; Whitefriars - Coghlan, A. Carbone, Mark Bateman . 1st - Goodwin, 2nd Lawson, 3rd - Stroud .

ROWDY IN GOOD "NICK" FOR 100TH PANTHER GAM E A big day for Old Mentonians in the 1st Semi today (28/8) is made even bigger for Nick M acquire when he notches up his 100th game for the club. Now in his 6th year at Pantherland, N ick takes pride in the fact that his 100 games have all been in the senior side, where he has played in defence, attack or on the ball . In 1987 Nick won Best 1st Yr Player and in 1988 B&F player . After a year with Sandringham, he returned and played in the clubs Inaugural Senior Premiership and won Most Courageous that year also . In '91 Nick won "Most Determined" and we all know how much he and the rest of the side will be determined to knock off the Blues today. Well done "Nicker". Great effort ! "ADS" THE RECORD S M ASHER Congratulations from all at Old Mentonians to full forward Adam Acreman who last week (21/8) booted 12 gls and, in so doing, broke the club's game tally & season tally records both previously held by Troy Riley . Ads is now on 86 gls and we all hope he can break the ton in the next 3 games. Well done Ads - From all your Panther mates . UNIVERSITY BLUE S University Blues appearance in this years (B) Section Final series is due to great determination on a large number of people around the club none of which contributed more than former Caulfield player and B&F winner John Kanis who played his 100th game forthe "Blues" on July 31st . This year, always an inspiration on the field John is True Blue and a genuine friend to each and every one of us who choose to be part of the Black & Blue . Thanks from us all John .

REVIEW - 1st SEMI FINAL (21 August) Seniors - The long and the short of it, is that Ajax are through to the preliminary final and it's curtains for the 'Schoolers . What turned out in the end to be a fairly comfortable victory (22 pts) wasn't achieved all that easily . Trailing by some 25 pts at the long Interval didn' t exactly inspire much confidence in the Ajax machine . However, to their credit they dug deep into their resources, hung in there, chipped away and finally got the roll-on effect going . Only 3 pts down at Lemon Time and with MHSOB depleted with the loss of Webster and Clinton Young the 'Jacks were well and truly back in business . Several of the'Highs leading lightswere kept in check and with Jason Banner, their only productive forward the Ajax gang were able to grab the lead early in the last stanza and from there force their way clear with Ace Gordons 7 gls helping to finally seal the fate of the 'Schoolers . I said in last weeks preview to this game that both teams possessed the ability to go all the way through these finals. Only Ajax survive and I'm certainly giving them a second to none chance of snaring the 'Flag' . Only todays loser stands between them from having that opportunity. Rese rves - Ajax 2's started the day off well for the club by winning their way through to the prelim, and in doing so eliminated Ivanhoe from any further participation . PREVIEW - 2nd SEMI FINAL ( 28 August) Seniors - Clash of the heavyweights, Mazenod vs Ivanhoe. The 2 teams that from the start to the end of the season have headed the ladder . "Minor" premiers Mazenod have defeated the 'hoes on both occasions this year, however the winning margin was greatly reduced in the last encounter. Working on the law of averages I suggest that today could very well be Ivanhoes day. Good honest match-ups all around the ground will ensure the game is a good spectacle for the onlookers . Both teams boast a bevvy of top footballers, Mazenods 2 Murrays, Noble, Fisher, Green and O'Hara and Ivanhoe with Kenney, Ford and Flynn to name but afew . 'B' Grade and a G/F berth await the winner and for mine at approx 4 .45 pm that'll be Ivanhoe by 20 pts . Rese rves - I'm right off the Mazenod "Waggon" because again I'm tipping they'll go down the tube. This time at the hands of MHSOB who must as a club be setting some sort of "Rezzies" finals appearance record. I can't remember when last they didn't appear no matter though, they'll win this by 36 pts .

LjlYr1 AJAX SKIPPER'S 150TH Congratulations to Ajax's Antony Klooger on achieving another great milestone with the club - 15 0 ames . Klooger'oined the club in 1984 and has bee n aptain during joined past 4 seasons . Several seriou s injuries have sidelined him however he is a true Club Champion and returning to his best form - just in time for him to captain the Jackerstothe'93 flag . Well done Cookie and many more games with the club. 50 GAMES AT OLD ESSENDO N "Jock" Bellman reaches the 50 game markfor Old Essendon in today's (28/8) Preliminary Final . A great clubman, we hope Jock's jocks will be seen around the club for many years to come.

Old Ivanhoe pretty awesome as they dispose of a very lethargic University Blacks, St Kevins got some consolation with a win in the RESERVES and in typical Melbourne fashion we start with a wet final series . REVIEW - SENIOR S The Blacks came out firing and by the end of the first 5 minutes had 2 gIs on the board while the young Hoes were still steadying their nerves . But not to be outdone they regained their composure and by 1/4 time had opened up a handy 4 gl lead . Their fierce tackling had put the Blacks players under plenty of pressure, thus forcing many turnovers. The Blacks avenue of attack was limited to John Stevens was doing a finejob in blanketing the dangerous Bromell . The 2nd qtr was fairly even with both sides giving everything, perhaps Ivanhoe should have been further in front at the main interval, because as has been the norm with their game this season they squandered many chances in front of goal . Still with the storm clouds threatening overhead 28 pts was a pretty handy lead at the half way mark but one could not feel too confident because when they get going the Uni Boys can be a very dangerous side. Inspired by the encouraging words of Coach Kevin McLean at 1/2 time the young lads from Ivanhoe, 10 of them still eligiblefor U19s came out firing on all cylinders, the harder it rained the better Ivanhoe became . An 11 gl burst while keeping the opposition virtualy scoreless under those conditions was magnificent football, and it had their fans clapping so much the old South Melbourne grandstand nearly collapsed . It was certainly their best qtr of the year, and what a time to produce it . Some of the goals kicked by Matty Huber, Marty Stewart and Bruce Yarwood were absolute gems, and they were set up by their centreline players such as Michael "Yob" Karayannis, George "Zues" Haros etc . who collected a massive total of possessions and seemed to enjoy the big ground and the conditions . The hapless Blacks seemed totally lethargic and just could not stop the onslaught, they had no system whatsoever and appeared to have a frustrating lack of desire, maybe the week before had taken too much out of them . The last quarter was even with the Blacks making a bit of an effort to improve their scoreline, but it did not have too much effect as the Hoes were already thinking ahead to the Prelim Final and so were able to answer every challenge and come away with a very convincing 14 gl victory . The other 2 sides watching from the grandstand must have been impressed and atthe same time worried by this very awesome performance from Old Ivanhoe. For the Blacks a disappointing end to what has been a season of consolidation, they must now lift their spirits and keep the banner flying by supporting the Reserves this week. In a fine team effort where they did not have a bad player, hard selection next week with Dyson and Clarkson to return, Yob Karayannis won the AOB Award just from Bruce "Tarz" Yarwood, and George Haros while I thought John Stevens at CH B deserves a mention

for his disciplined game, even kicked a goal in the last qtr. For the Blacks good players were hard to find but Radford, Hengel, Saffin and Townsend all tried hard . REVIEW - RESERVES Agood hard fought game in windy conditions which made all the scoring at one end, so the game was decided by the team who took more advantage . One felt that the OGs were not far enough in front atthefinal change and this proved to be the case with the fast finishing SKOBS coming away with the bacon . With a fair sprinkling of Senior players in both sides it was harder than a normal Ressies game, so it left no doubt in anyone's mind what finals footy is all about . Best players for SKOBS (according to the Coach) were Matt Chapman at Full Back Mark "Cougar" McKaige on his 36th Birthday across half back and Jon Sargeant in the ruck. PREVIEW - SENIOR S Both sides should be refreshed after a week off and all the niggling little injuries and aches and pains should have disappeared . This should be a close hard fought final, both sides have some excellent players, they have one win each during the season so there is not much difference between the two sides . The Tigers will be smarting after their loss last round and will be keen to atone for that defeat. Both sides should be highly motivated as C-Grade is at the end of the line . In what should be a great game of Ammo Footy hopefully in dry conditions I'll up the combine St Bedes(Mentone Tigers to advance to C-Grade and the Grand Final . PREVIEW - RESERVE S The Blacks have taken all before them this year, I don't think they will be too disturbed by the Seniors loss and even though Steve "Schillacci" King's boys will try hard I just can't see them winning . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS : Keep those reports coming in, including the Reserves . Don't forget Phone : 571 4808, Fax : 569 8766. Good Luck again David and the boys from St Johns .

St Mary 's secured a place in the F1 Grand Final with an upset victory over flag-favourite St Johns in their second semi-final clash last Saturday. The win, which was their first over St Johns this season, has assured them of E Grade promotion and has put them in the box seat to snatch F1 premiership glory . In thefirst semi-final, Peninsula lived to fight on after a nail-biting win over St Andrews and will today meet St Johns in the Preliminary Final . REVIEW A determined St Marys became the hot favourite to take the F1 flat after a stunning 50 pt win over St Johns in the second semi final at Camberwell . In slippery conditions, the Saints took control from the first bounce and never let up, increasing their lead at every change . The win was a shock turnaround from their previous losses to St Johns this season and has assured them of both a chance at premiership glory and a place in E Grade in 1994. A fiery crowd at Mordialloc was treated to a crack-ajack of a game between third and fourth placed Peninsula and St Andrews in the first semi final . Despite trailing by 20 pts at the main break, the Pirates fought back with a match-winning third term to lead at 3 qtr time and hang on by 3 pts in a thrilling finale . For the winners, West stood out amongst a strong backline with much needed support upfield by Thripp and Nelson . A frustrated St Andrews had their opportunities in the dying minutes but were unable to convert and will now have to watch the rest of the season from the sidelines. In the Reserves a lethargic Peninsula side had no answer for the ladder-leading Latrobe, eventually going down by 44 pts in their 2nd semi final at Mordialloc. Latrobe's running play, hard tackling and numbers at the ball proved too much for the Pirates, who struggled up forward and never looked like being in the game . As predicted, St Johns knocked St Andrews out of the race with a 6 gl win in their 1st semi final clash at Camberwell . The loss was the beginning of a shocking day for St Andrews, who tumbled out of both Senior and Reserve flag contention in consecutive games . PREVIEW St Johns and Peninsula will be fighting for dual Grand Final appearances when their Senior and Reserve teams do battle in the Preliminary Finals at Mordialloc today . In the Seniors, St Johns will be hoping to make amends on their upset loss last week and reaffirm their premiership favouritism while Peninsula will be pumped up and confident after their thrilling first semi final win . The Pirates have won both of their matches this year (by 2 pts in Round 3 and by 2 gls in Round 12) and will be hoping they can reproduce some of the third quarter magic that got them up against St Andrews last week . St Johns, however, are destined for E Grade and should get there with a 5 gl win . In the Reserves, Peninsula (who won their Round 12 encounter by 16 pts but lost their Round 3 clash by

3 pts) will be looking for a better performance after last week's disappointing loss to Latrobe. St Johns will be on a high after their win over St Andrews and will want a strong win to give their Seniors the confidence to do the same. The Pirates, however, will not want to miss out again this year and, if Sambo can get it together, should sneak into their second consecutive Grand Final with a 2 gl win . GUEST TIPSTERS Seniors : Peninsula . Brett Connell : Reserves : Peninsula .

Congratulations go to Oakleigh, like St Leos the previous season on being promoted in their 1st year of Ammo Football . My predictions on Saturday was correct . REVIEW Uni Reds after leading at quarter time could not match the Krushers running players to go down convincingly by 47 pts . Richmond Central leading for most of the match could not match Yarra Valley in the last term to go down by 15 pts. PRELIMINARY FINA L - UNI REDS vs YARRA VALLEY This should be a great game with both teams playing each other once during the year with Reds winning by a small margin . As I've said before the Reds struggle to win away from home and it was evident on Saturday when they were thumped by Oakleigh to the tune of 47 pts. Yarra Valley also were struggling only to have a gigantic last quarter with Simpson kicking a few goals in that quarter after having a quiet 3 qtrs. Both teams are very skilful and good running teams but its very hard to tip the winner in this one. There is a lot at stake on this game with the winner being promoted to F Grade and the loser being part of the new G Grade . I'm going to stick with Yarra Valley to win this by 8 pts and advancing to the F2 Grade Grand Final next Saturday against Oakleigh . RESERVES Chirnside Park with an influx of senior players shoul d be too good for Oakleigh who may also have a few senior players available by 3 gls to advance to the Grand Final against Balwyn Combined .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS GAMES Division 1 Xavversfailedto be inspired by the "slab" challenge and their poor kicking for goal cost them dearly for tfie 2nd week in a row when their loss to Nodders cost them the double chance . Warren O'Hara, Steve Coulson and Russell Sharpe made up a half backline that made it hard for Xavs to pass whilst Peter McCusker kicked "the goal of the year" from his wing to put Nodders in front . A couple more after that gave them the game . Shannon Morgan notched a unique 50 g!s for the year when he booted 4 - they were scored in 3 grades! Bernies got off to a good start against Ormond and never looked back . Adam Farmer, Ashley McIntyre and "Little Chatty" were 3 good performers in an even team effort with the main scorers being "Webby" with 6 and Mark Farmer and Danny Rogers with 4 apiece . Division 2 Central - 1st Semi Final I was wrong on so many scores in my prediction except that I made Val Evans very happy by picking the Blues . Instead of starting slowly the Students had the 1/4 time lead but could kick only 6 more majors compared to Carey's 13. Will Jobbo get his job back on his return? A big 2nd term turned the corner for Carey and they went on to 7 gl lead at 3/4 time and coasted home. Commiserationsto Steve on getting his lads into the finals again only to miss out on the flag . His best on the day were Teelow, Bales and Speers whilst Ian Bracken did well considering his recent injury . Addison (6) and Campbell did best for Carey while Mathews got another 4 to add to his already impressive tally . Division 2 South - 1st Semi Final Yetanother poor finals selection -serves me rightfor not sticking with "my" team . After being scoreless in the 3rd term, Collegians came home strongly - 7 gls to 1 - to run out winners by 20 pts . No doubttheir recent losses to Tonners and Jackers prepared them better for finals football than the Bedas . Razza did well kicking 5 of Bedas 9 gIs whilst they were best served by Mick Hecker (as usual), Donnellan and Georgoulis . Once again Andrew Semmens was Collegians main scorer with 4 majors moving his season's tally to 47. The Lions were best served by Rose, Michael Lucas and Gene Palmer. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division 1 - 1st Semi Fina l After holding top spot for almost the entire season, Xavs now find themselves in the cut-throat first semi after successive losses to Chirnside and Mazenod . Bernies also stumbled at Chirnside but their form for the last half of the season has been pretty good particularly at Keilor where I think their only failure was at the hands of the Xavvers . Can they fire up as well away from home? They should have "Big Chatty" back from the ones and he will be a great asset around the packs . Two key players will be the two "solid" spearheads - "Webby" and Stones both very strong players who know where the big sticks are . Xavs will need big games from Dluzniak and Fitzsimon if they are to win whereas Bernies have

been getting consistently good contributions all over the ground particularly their on-bailers . Two weeks ago I would not have hesitated to go for Xavs but Bernies appeal to me as being first a little more evenly balanced and I'll upset them by tipping them to get home by one straight kick (something Xavs haven't been doing very well lately - total of 14-33 in the last 2 games!) Division 2 Central - 2nd Semi Fina l I saw parade suffer one of their only 2 losses for the year in an early season game at Therry . It was possibly the best game I have seen all season and Parade have maintained that form throughout the season . I also saw NOBs when they played a weaker Therry team than the one that played Parade and, even though they won, the game was not a classy spectacle . NOBs strength is the evenness of their forward line - 4 or 5 can kick a bag of goals . The Bundoora Boys will have to watch McMahon, Haddad, Tonkin and Mattiazzi in particular. Despite this I think that Parade's forward line is equally as dangerous and their backline, which conceded 400 pts less than NOBs, is very miserly and will stop NOBs from notching a winning score. Division 2 South - 2nd Semi Fina l Tonners were 1st or 2nd for most of the year while Jackers got the double chance with 2 great wins over Tonners and Collegians in their last 2 games with the victory at the "wind Tunnel" being an exceptional effort . Biggest poser for Michael Hill will be who can he use to stop Jackers' goalkicking machine Michael Rajch . If he can do that he'II have the Tonners well on the way to winning . Tonners are a pretty evenly balanced team and I expect their lack of any "stars" to work in their favour for 3 qtrs but Jackers have been good finishers all season and this will see them go into their 2nd successive grand final . 9 UNDER 19 SECTION 1 SECOND SEMI FINAL AT ELSTERNWICK PARK (Saturday 8 am ) MAZENOD vs DE LA SALLE UNDER 19 SECTION 2 CENTRAL PRELIMINARY FINAL AT OAKLEIGH (2 pm) Loser of today's Second Semi vs OLD CARE Y UNDER 19 SECTION 2 SOUTH PRELIMINARY FINAL AT OAKLEIGH (11 .30 am) Loser of today's Second Semi vs COLLEGIANS

SPORTSCOVER As mentioned in an earlier issue of The Amateur Footballer (July 17) Sportscover has been delighted with club support this year and as a result offered a competition related to the VAFA Tribunal, Investigations and Reserve Umpire programs . It is with pleasure that I announce that OLD GEELONG has been deemed the winner of the competition and amassed 118 points in the competition . OLD GEELONG's points were accumulated in the following way: 1 . Each club was initially allocated 100 points to start with . (O. Geelong 100 pts) . 2 . Points were then deducted according to the number of matches players are suspended for by the VAFA Tribunal e.g . a 4 match suspension would lead to a loss of 4 points . (0. Geelong s score still 100 - no suspensions) 3. Points were then deducted for clubs found guilty of being involved in melees - for each melee 10 points were deducted (O Geelong's score still 100 - no melees ) 4. Two points were then awarded for each officiating club reserve grade umpire (3 or more matches who had attended a 1993 Reserve Umpire Accreditation Night . (0. Geelong's score now 106 - 3 umpires) . 5. An extra 3 points were awarded should a 2nd, 3rd or more than 3 accredited umpires officiate in 3 reserve grade matches . (0. Geelong's score now 112 - a 2nd and 3rd umpire umpired at /east 3 reserve matches) 6 . A further 2 points were awarded for each accredited umpire who had officiated in 3 or more matche s

and who was not the Club Secretary or President . (0 Geelong's score now 118 - none of the 3 accredited umpires was the club President or Secretary) As the winner of this competition Old Geelong receives a $500 trophy account with Hickman's of Melbourne (see another section of this News) which is to be used when Old Geelong is buying its end of year trophies this account paid for by Sportscover.

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundle

5 YEARS AGO - 198 8 What a season it has been! Who would have believed back in April that De La Salle OC would have been relegated to "B" Section orthat Marcellin would feature in the first semi . Parkside congratulated their coach Wayne Bannister on his marriage to Carmel 'Chicken Queen' Chiminelio . Legendary Parkside veteran Jack King gave the GROOM away, or so said the Parkside scribe. In good weather Old Xaverians over-powered Marcellin in the second half to advance to the preliminary final, 16 .11 to8.11 . BestwereCallan, Jack McKay, Atkins, Steve Curtain (7 gls and missed afew easy shots) (Old Xav) and Peter Sheehan (100th game), Lennox, Delahunt (Marc.) . In "B" Section first semi, Therry after a slow start finally got on top of Bulleen/Templestowe to win 13.15 to 11 .5 . Highlight of the match was the wonderful duel in the centre between Nyman (T) and Smythe (BT) . Nyman's performance turned the tide for Therry and he probably shaded Smythe on the day who kicked what could only be described as "some great captain's goals" . Best were Nyman, Tyler, M att on (Th .) and Smythe, George, Espenschied (B-T.) . Closest final game of the day was in Junior Section 3 when Monash Blues beat Hampton Rovers by the solitary point, 8.7 to 7.12 . Best were Smith, Hyett, Hipwell (M . B.) and Crawford, Engelkamp, Roberts (H . Rovers) . The Rovers did have a big day in "D" as they annihilated Preston in the second semi, 16.16 to 12 .7 to go into the Grand Final and have the chance to win the club's first premiership since 1951 . Panagiotidis kicked 8 gls for the Rovers . It was a disappointin g ointing day for Ban yule who lost th e "C" Section preliminaryto Old Brighton . The Maroon and Blues scored 13 wins straight and then lost form . What can happen in a week - Old Brighton were long shots to make the finals until St . Kilda CBCOC's shock loss to Thomastown, and then defeated Old Haileyburians in the first semi . Now they find themselves being promoted to "B" Section with their Grand Final opponents Old Melburnians . both were relegated to "C" at the end of the 1986 season . 1st SEMI FINAL 10 YEARS AGO - 198 3 It was a big week in the VAFA - President Alex Johnson was recovering from a heart attack, Peter French became a father for the first time, and M argot Bassett, joined the VAFA staff where it was believed that all callers would benefit from her ready wit and personality! The VAFA moved from its temporary offices in Little Collins Street to Elsternwick Park . In A Section Collegians found its early season form and outpaced and outplayed the slower North Old Boys to win by 29 pts, 17.15 .117 to 13 .10.88. Best were Cook, Chosich, Oliphant (Coll) & Welch, Jordon, Considine (NOB) . In the B Section first semi, Kew 37 pts down at the

first change, 20 at half time, and 26 at the last change, got up by one point to beal Alphington 13.17.95 to 13.16.94. Best were Haralambopoulos, Jackomos, Varney, Burden, Anderson, Blay (Kew) . 45 gls in C Section first semi saw Parkside come away in the final term to beat Hampton Rovers 26.17. to 19.21 . Good players for the winners were Heaver, Allan, Sonsonetti (Park) & Jones, Stephens, Beck (Hampton Rovers) . Best and Fairest votes for D, E and F Sections were counted at a dinner at Marcellin . In 'D' A . White (Therry), G. Maher (State Bank), & F. Stafford (Powerhouse) all scored 18 with White winning on a countback . in'E' Richard M orley (Bulleen United) with 21 votes beat three very good players in Tony Fellowes (T'town) 22, Gary Norton (Old Ment) 21, & David Gregory (Bala) 17. Dougal Morrison (Old Geelong) 19 won 'F' Section B&F from Keith Laker (UHSOB) 18 . Peninsula pirate, Chris Doyle, a key figure since the club's inception played his 50th game, topping a good season . Chris had played with the VAFA team in Tasmania . 15 YEARS AGO - 197 8 Field umpires were 'A' first semi : Croxford, Goodman ; 'B' first semi : J . Smith ; 'C' semis : King, Tracey ; 'D' semis : G . M . Simpson, Rowe ; 'E' semis : Rowell, Wills ; 'F' semis : M ead, Sharpe . At half time North Old Boys & Ivanhoe, 13 pts apart, looked set for a tough second half but it was not to be . North Old Boys went on to kick 11 .7 in the 2nd half to Ivanhoe's ten behinds . Best were Borcich, Hanneberry, Robertson, Dillon (6 gls) (NOB) & Simpson, M cNamara, Stredwic k (I'hoe) . Old Paradians' inaccuracy in the 'B' firstsemi, 8 .23, threw the Association competition into minor chaos when they played a draw with Old Hailey.10.11 . Natoli, Roe, Johnson (Old Parade) & Houghton, D . Legge, Paul (Old Hailey) were the stars . In a desperate 'C' Section second semi Ajax won their way into 'B' Section against St K ilda CBCOC by a solitary pt, 11 .6 to 10.11 . Players to stand out were Rozen, M . Ritterman Korn Ajax) & Jones, Dynon, Salter (St Kilda CBG~OC) . ~he same margin saw Bulleen/Templestowe, 11 .18 defeat St Bedes OC 12 .11 in 'E' second semi and win promotion . 20 YEARS AGO - 1973 In the `A' Section first semi Caulfield Grammarians, 13.16 were too strong all day for North Old Boys 8.9 . Stars were Dickeson, Morphett, McNicoll (Caul . Gramm) & Joss, Fennelly, Power (NOB) . Kew 13 .14 defeated Old Trinity 8.11 in'B' first semi - Johnston Clay, Barclay Kew) & Kennedy, Oppy & R . Peers ~Old Trinity) were best .

Closest result in all finals was 'C' Section where Powerhouse 17.17 got home by 2 pts from Parkside 18 .9. Connor, Daniel, Hadjigeorgiou (Powerhouse) & P. Johnson, Graham, Clark Parkside) were best . Other results : D'1' State Bank 20 .13 d La Trobe 18.14 ; D'2' Alphington 21 .13 d Marcellin 6 .13 ; E'1' AMP 14.6 d Elsternwick 9 .18 ; E'2' Old Ivanhoe 16.16 d Old Camberwell 12 .9 ; F'1' St Bede's OC 17.12 d Latrobe Reds 8.10 ; F'2' Fawkner 19.16 d Monash Whites 9.11 . 25 YEARS AGO - 1968 Only 3 pts separated Caulfield Grammarians & Uni Blacks at half time in the A First semi . However, in the third quarter Caulfield kicked 7.4 to take a commanding lead and hold off a determined finish by Blacks to win by 11 pts and enter the prelim . final . Best were Atchison, Butcher (5 gls) & Clarkforthe visitors while Crouch, Pruden & Patteron starred for the Blacks . UHSOB 13.17, best D'Arcy, Smith, O'Kane, defeated De La Salle 10.16, best Ashford, Whitelaw, Leach in B first semi . In C Section semis, OGG eliminated Powerhouse from the premiership battle with an 8 pt victory. Slade, R. Brown, P. Godfrey (OGG) and veteran Hutchinson, Staples, Hutchins (PH) were best . FIT OB defeated St Bernards by 11 pts to win their way into B Section . Stars were Smalley, Miller, Mannix, (FIT OB) & M . Perrett, G . Tobin, McCartney (St B) . 35 YEARS AGO - 1958 Geoff Hibbins won the 'A' Section B&F by 2 votes

from Frank Hillyear (Coburg . An outstanding performance was that of Bob McLellan (Old Brighton Gramm) who won the 'E' Section B&F, scoring votes in 16 of 18 games played . UMPIRES CORNER by Mike Murray and Steve McCarthy • A few more snippets from the Annual Dinner of last week. Paul La Vale's table certainly seemed the place to be - you didn't need entertainment up on the stage. Father Michael Murray drinking wine fronm the Bob Dunstan Trophy and then wiping it out with his handkerchief . Bernie Hoare's novel use of the same trophy in the car park . The after dinner session at the Sante Fe will become legendary (as mentioned by the Rover last week) . Most of the other happenings at Santa Fe are best left untold - those who were there will know what we mean . Buy a new tie Mike, the old one is ruined . o We made mention of our Treasurer Steve Hopper's misfortune with his car keys a few weeks back, it now appears he's in the news again .
