Today sees the first of our senior grand finals with the E section finals being played between St Leos Wattle Park and Old Camberwell at Sandringham ( PS tip : St Leos Watt le Park, but Old Camberwell could surprise) ; the F1 final is between St John's and St Mary's (PS tip : St Mary's - I couldn't tip against the' Kyabram Kid' Dick Clay) whilst the F2 final is between Oakleigh and Yarra Valley ( PS tip : Yarra Valley to getup in a surprise win) . Both pa rt icipating teams in each Grand Final are requested to remain on the ground for the presentation ceremony which will immediately follow each match . A VAFA official will present all the premiership medaallions to the winning President for distribution in the rooms and then the premiershi p cup will be presented to the winning coach and captain . It is cert ainly hoped that the winning team and the losing team will ensure that this ceremony is conducted in true, spo rtsmanlike Amateur style .

And then there were three! REVIEW 1st semi final - Colleg ians v North Old Boys. Th e Lions' roar returned last weekend, and it was as loud as ever. Collegians pulled out a massive form reversal to show North Old Boys how to play finals football . The "old hands" were at it again - Bennett, Galbraith, Schober, Wright etc. But it was the commitment shown by the lesser known Collegians that set them on their winning way. Brett Jefferson did a great job on Steve Brazil, and Vaughan Cleary and Aaron Harrison impressed at half fwd and half back respectively. From the first bounce Collegians seemed to be right on the game" as they peppered the goals. Many wasted opportunities later, the Lions had only, connected 5 of their 14 shots at goal . North got fair dinkum in the second term having 16 shots at goal . They too wasted many chances, but would have been happy to have the lead by half time. There was nothing in it at the main break but North appeared to be on top. Collegians, from that point on, took complete control as North were held to 2 goals in the 3rd term, while the Lions piled on six . North at this stage had very few winners . Bruno Conti was battling on as was Marcus Boyd and Ben Herrald . However, North simply had nothing up forward . Nobody looked dangerous in North's forward line and a winning score seemed to be needed from the on-ballers . With Schober marking everything coming his way, Collegians grew in confidence . Michael Lake and Vaughan Cleary were proving elusive as the game became one-sided . Collegians had done their homework and they put Brazil, Jones and Booth all out of business . Now the test arises again . Do the Lions have the manpower to stop De La Salle or Old Xaverians . Time will tell . One would think that if the conditions continue to be perfect for football that the top two teams may have the edge over the Lions . However, they certainly showed everyone at Elsternwick Park that the desire is there, as is the steadiness that is much needed in the big games . PREVIEW 2nd semi final De La Salle vs Old Xaverians . The two best performers in the competition do battle on Sunday at Elsternwick Park . Only 3 weeks ago the Old Xaverians blew De La away with a brilliant first quarter. De La came back but the Xavs were far too good in the end . Will this result be repeated today ? De La, like Collegians, had been in average form in the final two rounds. But we must not discount the fact that they are experienced in the finals . The Old Xaverians have taken all before them this year. The addition of Mick Blood, Stuart Colquhoun, Anthony McDonald, Dale Tapping and Peter Anderson has given this side a touch of class - equivalent to the best in the competition . Unfortunately for the Xavs they will be without Matt Bourke - this is a major loss, as Bourke is versatile, courageous, skillful and reliable. So how will a star studded team go against an out of form, but experienced line up .
John and David McKay are ever reliable in the last line of defence for the Xavs . If it is dry, Pat O'Callaghan may provide the height that will frustrate them . De La's other potential avenues in goal include Nick Fraser, who can be inconsistent, Pat Mannix, who has been ruck roving and Sam Hunter who is now in defence . Much like Collegians, De La rely on their runners to kick goals . Brett Mahony, Craig Wright, Col McClounan and Mick Dillon are key players, and will need to be at their best if De La are to post a winning score. The Xaverians are strong in the air with Blood, Colquhoun, Anderson and Bailey all capable of making big marks and kicking goals. So we have two distinctly different avenues to goal - marking versus running . Andrew Ronchi has long been regarded as a vital cog in De La's line up, but how will he beat the Xaverian's bean poles? Dale Tapping and Anthony McDonald are impressive midfielders and their duels with Mahony and McClounan should be a highlight. The De La defence has great poise, but may lack height. Andrew Mackintosh, Danny Smith, Grant Sheedy and Sam Hunter are playing tight creative football, but the ball must be brought to the ground ! In my opinion the result of this game will depend on whether De La can negate the Xaverian "talls" . If they can, they will win . It seems unlikely that the weather can continue. It has to turn sooner or later! Apart from the weather, I have to give greater credibility to finals experience - Collegians showed that last week. All in all De La for mine, by less than 15 points.

NEXT WEEK'S MATCHES~~~~ PRELIMINARY FINAL AT ELSTERNWICK PARK (Sunday)
i1 200, 100 & 50 GA M ES 200 - Greg McHenry, who returned to the fray this year, after a break of five years made the Seniors for thefirstthree qamesthenin'urysidelinedhim, however he reached the famed 20 mark with the Reserves in the last game of the season against Ormond . Despite his "35 Years +" he is still as speedy as ever and will be of tremendous help on the wide spaces of Elsternwick Park in the Finals . A great effort Greg, we all salute you . 100 - Shane Rudd recently passed this milestone after missing six games with a displaced shoulder. Shane, like 90% of the Senior Teams came through the Under 19's and after two seasons at full back with both the Seniors and Reserves where his long kicking has been a feature, this year at full-forward has been most successful with high marking and those long left foot kicks . Good work Ruddy, we all wish you well on the way to the second hundred . 50's - Brett Mahoney one of the VAFA's star rovers, recently reached the 50 game mark . In the'91 Grand Final, a group of opposition supporters were constantly bewailing 'there's that number 2 again', that is Brett he is where the ball is . We all wish him an injury free finals series and congratulate him on his contribution to the De La Team . Sam Hunter, a player of great potential started the season with some wonderful displays until afoot injury side lined him for eight weeks, delayed his 50th game until late August, and is gradually striking the form which we all know he is capable, good luck Sammy. Craig Swift, another, like Sam, is getting into fine touch come the finals . Swiftly with his deceptive long striding speed hasturned in manyfine gamesthis year and we are confident that the finals will bring out his best, which we know is really good . Go Swifty, go. team last year and is proving .a very solid and reliable player when in either the seniors or reserves and has a great future at the Club . A likeable lad who has endeared himself to players and supporters. Byron Smith one of the quiet achievers of the Club started the season in the Seniors and performed with credit . His form in the Reserves of late must make him a possibility for a spot in the Seniors in the Final Series . Good work Byron on recently attaining your 50th and here's wishing you, and the above named, good luck in the Finals .

However last week when training was cancelled because of heavy rains, players still turned up at Elsternwick Park not having been told the procedure . Please understand that training will only be permi tted should conditions be perfect i .e. ground and weather. Our aim is to attempt to present the ground each weekend in the best possible condition - this weekend for example 5 matches are being played on the ground . • The next meeting of club members will be held at Elsternwick Park on Monday October 25th at 7 .30 pm . • The "Diadora Player of the Year" will be announced soon . A panel of 'notables' will be asked to vote 3, 2 and 1, considering the 19 individual Player of the Week nominations to finalise this award . Let us take a quick look at the last week . There were 10 games to tip and with only 5 winners the 50% strike rate is nothing to brag about . A Section : Collegians overpowered NOBs in a brilliant second half to sound a warning to the other two sides left in the race. B Section : A spirited Uni Blues enjoyed their first win over Old Mentonians this season and what a game to do it in. C Section : Mazenod proved its flag favouritism with a comfortable victory over Ivanhoe and assured itself promotion to B Section in '94. D Section : Newly combined St Bedes/Mentone Tigers proved too slick a combination for Old Geelong who must re-group if they are to enter C Section next season . E Section : A disciplined Old Camberwell outlasted Doveton in a bruising encounter at Sandringham for the right to play St Leos and join them in D Section next season . F1 Section : St Johns defeated Peninsula and so now have another crack at St Marys who beat St Johns for the first time two weeks ago in the 2nd Semi . F2 Section : New side Yarra Valley knocked off Uni Reds to join another new side to the VAFA, Oakleigh in F Section next season . U19 Sec.1 : St Bernards desire and teamwork were too much for the Old Xavs at the Junction Oval, so keeping their finals hopes alive . U19 Central : Old Paradians humbled NOBs with a blistering second half and must be red hot for the flag . U19 South : Ajax proved too accomplished for Old Brighton and finished the'Tonners' off to see themselves through to the Grand Final in a weeks time . ,t~k* Head-to-head this weekend sees some interesting clashes with three Grand Finals (E, F1, F2) and the other finals determining promotion (B, C, D) .
A Section : De La Salle face Old Xavs with the winner gaining automatic promotion into the Grand Final in two weeks time. Old Xavs had the most recent win in slippery conditions but early in the year De La reversed the result in similar conditions . With fine weather expected and not much between the sides, a toss of the coin sees Xavs as the tip . B Section : Therry take on Old Melburnians who finished the season strongly on top of the ladder. On both occasions Old Melburnians have had Therry's measure and should continue this trend today .
C Section : With a win a piece both Ivanhoe and Ajax are evenly matched today in the battle to join Mazenod in B Section in '94, and earn the right to challenge Mazenod next week for the C Section Premiership . A toss of the coin again but form throughout the year suggests Ivanhoe, but Ajax are my tip . D Section : Old Geelong must re-group and take on Old Ivanhoe at Brunswick today to win the right to play St BedesiMentone Tigers in next weekends Grand Final . With a win each during the year, form must be the decider. Old Geelong deserve that mantle . OGs to win . E Section : St Leos face form side Old Camberwell this week for the E Section pennant. St Leos have an awesome record, 1 loss in two seasons . We can't see this being altered today. F1 Section : St Johns earned the right to defend their top spot at the end of the home and away season after defeating Peninsula last weekend . St Marys with the rest seem capable but St Johns are in form . F2 Section : The two new sides to the VAFA Oakleigh and Yarra Valley go head to head at Northcote Park today. Oakleigh have been the form side all season, but I'm tipping our upset from the young Yarra Valley charges. U19 Sec. 1 : Mazenod will defeat De La Salle today at the Junction Oval, after having the edge in both of their encounters this season . U19 Central : NOBs must regroup and defeat Old Carey if it is to have another crack at the powerful Old Paradians combination . They will find Old Carey no pushover but should hold too many aces up forward . U19 South : Old Brighton play Collegians in what promises to be a ripper contest . With a win each throughout the season my tip is Collegians after the confidence boosting win two weeks ago . Leading goalkickers from Under 19 and Club 18 are as follows: (U19/1) Vinnie Piccioli (Ch .P 88), ( U19/C) Cam Matthews (Old Car.), Chris McMahon (NOBs 56), U19/S) Michael Rach (AJ, 105), (Club XVIII S) Matt Dalton (O.X. 71), (Club XVII N) Tim Strickland (E . 30). ** ~ Next week a complete run down of those teams promoted to new sections, and a wrap up of the VAFA VOTE COUNT NIGHT at the Radisson this coming Monday, September 6. **~
B SECTION by David Hollan d
REVIEW - 1ST SEMI FINAL Season '93 came to an abrupt anti-climax for Old Mentonians when they were beaten by a far superior Uni Blues, on the day, in the "crunch' 1st Semi Final at EP last week . The return of Stuart Farrow and Craig Best gave the Panthers a strong starting line-up, however, the Blues lost the services of 2 top players in Jim Buckley and Graeme Hazeldine through injury the week before. Panthers' full forward Adam Acreman was on fire early in the 1st term and looking very dangerous for the Blues, however, later in the quarter he was forced to leave the ground after injury. this was to prove very costly for the 'Toners . 2 qIs to Rover Tim Harris and one from Chris Taylor saw the Blues 2 pts up at quarter time . The only highlight of the 2nd term for Panthers was the 2 huge grabs from Campbell and Bournon, the (after converting for his side's only major for the term . Uni booted 5 and should have had more butfor poor kicking and the Panthers defence was, uncharacteristically, a mess. Travis O' Brien had a great quarter, likewise Andrew Wilson and Paul Stephens alongside him, were inpenetrable in defence . Blues lead increased to 40 pts after 2 quick goals f rom Nathan Harris in the opening mins of the 3rd term, however, goals from Farrow, Dickson, Bournon, and the injured Acreman saw the deficit reduced to 20 at the last break . David Paterson goaled at the 3 min mark of the final term to give the Panthers a big sniff but the winning scent quickly blew away as Blues forward Tom Hutchins ran riot booting 5 gls to finish with 8 for the day. Uni kicked 8 .5 to 'Toners 2 .2 to run away 59 pt victors and earn a well deserved place in the Prelim Final . Aside from Hutchins, the key to the Blues win was their backline with Wilson, Stephens, and O'Brien very solid all day. Withouttaking anything awayfrom Uni, the loss of Acreman, combined with many below-scratch performances from Panther players and their lack of desire at ground level, in particular, contributed to a disappointing end to the season for Old Mentonians . It was, on the bright side, the highest position ever reached by them and'94 should see big yearfrom them . The bright light for OMs was Ruckman Dave Campbell who has had a great season and stood head and shoulders above his team mates . Nathan Harris and John Kanis both G - pt in great games for the Blues and . goal of the day? Lockhead, thank you very muchl! PREVIEW - 2ND SEM I FINA L We move now to the all important double chance encounter to decide who will move straight into the Grand Final and take a ticket to A Grade with them . On paper, both sides are fairly evenly matched, both processing excellent back and forward lines . Both Clubs have lost 4 games this year, Therry having a draw withB/Temp back in Round 9 . OMs boast the best defence this season with Tony Wills being a very tough assignment for any full forward . He's likely to pick up John Zanetti today but the problem for OMs is Adam
McKay who booted 9 after standing in for Zanetti last outing, providing a definite 2nd target up forward . I imagine Tim Stuckey or Jeremy Nicholls will have the job . OMs have strong backline support in the form of Zani Useinov and Nick Boyden, both in good form . Up forward for OMs, much relies on CHF Scott Teal who in recent weeks has been the key to his sides resurgence from a mid-season slump. Other options are Scott Oliver and Simon Fraser, however OMs tend to rely a lot on the running players to do the bulk of goal scoring . Mid-field is once again, where the game will be decided with the all-important centre clearances counting for much . The experience of "Chief" Petrevski, coupled with his extra inches,, is a bonus for Therry whilst Mick Goodwin, Tim Taylor, Lou Caruana and Dennis Castald . iwlbethkyagroundvl OMs on ballers, in general, are superior in this department . Richard Webb and "Minni" Thompson primarily, together with Andy Wilts and Micah Berry are a classy combination in very good form and the matchups at first bounce will be very interesting . Opposing skippers Jeremy Nicholls and Paul Mallon are great players and leaders, both in defence, and I'm tipping this game will have a lot more "feeling" in it from the start, than last week's mild mannered encounter . OMs have won both games this year, the 2nd by 11 gis and are in awesome form . Conditions and weather all being good, the "Juggernaut" should take a place in the GF after beating Therry by 27 pts today. Good luck to both Clubs . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS : Same as usual guys, perhaps a more detailed summary please. Cheers. iMff1 ~ . FIRST SEMI FINAL - ELSTERP! SENIORS

WHAT A PAIR ! Last week, (Round 18) Andres and Tony Witts played their 400th combined game for OMs - a remarkable achievement. Over the past 10 years, these two have formed much of the backbone of the OMs lineup, and their dedication to the OMs is to be congratulated . Hot on the heels of Andy's 250th, Tony "Wiggsy" Witts plays his 150th game for OMs this week . A fantastic performer at fullback, Tony loves nothing more than infuriating full forwards with his niggling and constant chatter, and always gives others 'Heart Murmurs' when he kicks out or has a bounce in defence . Over the years tone has lost nothing except hair, and is to be congratulated on this milestone today! !

REVIEW - 2ND SEMI FINAL (28 August) Seniors - Mazenod vs Ivanho e conditions theuNods jumped the rHoes Insthe 1st tanza to open up a lead of 22 pts . Ivanhoe players seemed to be 2nd to the ball in nearly all contests and as a result nigh on every loose ball to be won was taken away by Mazenod and scored from up forward . Early in the 2nd quarter Ivanhoe came back spiritedly to edge within striking distance . However, the 'Nods were able to counter attack, ride out the on-slaught and just on 1/2 time 'snag' a couple of majors to maintain a healthy 19 pt lead . Mazenods primary aim in the 3rd qtr was to run, run and run more and force Ivanhoe into errors . This they did effectively for 20 minutes and stretched the lead out to some 40 pts before the 'Hoes dug in deep and fought back tenaciously to keep within sight at lemon time in arrears by 26 pts . The last quarter was to prove a'whitewash' with Mazenod scoring at ease, made all the more simple because of Ivanhoe being reduced to 17 players courtesy of an indescretion mid way through the term . The 'Nods slammed on 9 'big ones' to Ivanhoes 2 and ran out the easiest of victors by 71 pts . Congrats to Mazenod on attaining 'B' grade status and bookingto a GF berth and to Ivanhoe, you've sti!l got the chance atone . Rese rves - MHSOB vs Mazeno d This game was a ripperfrom starttofinish with no more than 2 gls separating the teams throughout . The'High boys ended by doing a'Ronald Biggs' and stealing the spoils right from under the beaks of the 'Nods . A big last stanza by MHSOB's got them over the line by 5 pts in a crackerjack affair . PREVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL ( 4 September) Seniors - Ivanhoe vs Aja x withlnnaoweek fromda a 2nd semifi~altloss and more importantly the checking of the Jacks running machine . Some weeks ago albeit atthe home ground of Ajax the 'Hoes found this task beyond them . I'm sure the Ivanhoe gang will have done their homework to the limits, but will it be enough?
Ajax also have going for them the benefit of the weeks break to be able to lick any wounds from their 1Fit semi victory as against afew aches and pains in the Ivanhoe camp. Ivanhoe to win this game must become far more oheck the 'rupn~ersao Aj dx, ForalmineYin what should be a great spectacle the Ajax team should emerge narrow winners, say 17 pts . Rese rves - Mazenod vs Aja x On finals form thus far, last weeks loser (Mazenod) was a better team in defeat than the 1st semi winner Ajax . The contest should go down to the wire and any lapse in effort or concentration bythe'Nods will be punished by the 'Jacks . In the wash-up Mazenod to win its way through to the GF for another crack at the 'High boys . 'Nodsb 27 pts . Guest pste r Danny Hall, The'Blonde Bombshell' from Brunswick
AFC in 'D' Grade, who made a big impression on C to F Grade State Selectors this year with his inspirational leadership and on-field form . Seniors - Ivanhoe, simply because their overall record for the season stands up better than that of Ajax . Rese rves - Mazenod, still to go under last week to MHSOBS and they'll be itching to get back at them for another crack .

NEXT WEEK'S MATCHE S8 GRAND FINAL AT ELSTERNWICK PARK (Saturday)

D SECTION by Tom Brain
On a perfect day for football in front of a crowd dressed for summer and the beach St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers played a very good game of football to progress to the Grand Final and rightful promotion to C Section in 1994 . Congratulations to all associated with the club from the Coaching Panel to the players to the administrators, promotion in the first year of a merger is a just reward for a season of hard work . OGs must bounce back hard this week, or its season will be over. REVIEW - SENIORS The heat was never going to make it easy for the players, so it was imperative that one of the sides should get an early lead before the heat took its toll . This is exactly what happened as the Tigers took complete control of the game with a scintillating 8 gl burst . It was set up by the midfielders and capitalised on by Tony McGeorge and his fellow forwards were particularly dangerous, and were giving the OGs backline the run around . The Tiger defense was also making it difficult for Old Geelong with Manton and Howells both being held in check. The second quarter was an even scrambly affair with not much scoring being done, but the OGs seemed to have settled their nerves and were making it harder for the Tigers to score. Stu Glasscott was an inspiring leader and just continued to run all over the place, but a couple of unfortunate injuries did not help the cause and the Tiger side still appeared to be the faster, and even though being outscored they still appeared to be in control of the match and the main break as they retired to the rooms for a well earned respite from the heat . The important championship quarter was again a tough battle. The OGs would have been hoping they could get back into the game, but such was not to be, they had no system, their forwards were still struggling and they could not shake off the persistent Tigers who again stuck to their game plan with a passion, and so at the final change the game was firmly in their grasp and C-Grade was a mere formality. The last quarter was a mere procession as the more desperate and obviously fitter St Bedes/Mentone Tigers totally ran away with the game with a 7 gl burst which was a fantastic performance in the usually warm conditions, so it was obvious that their fitness was not a major concern as they were going just as fast at the end as at the beqinning . The Old Geelong side to their credit did keep frying, did not give in at any time but were quick to praise their opponents who on the day were just far too good . In such a great team effort it is perhaps not too fair to individualise better Tiger players but Bilos, Lannan, Edwards (7 gls) Tim Beasley always dangerous, McGeorge and Jones stood out . For OGs Stuart Glascott was tireless he just ran himself into the ground trying to lift his players . Matt Wilson was strong in the air, Cullen Gunn and Bernie Edmund battled hard but other good ones were hard to find .
REVIEW - RESERVES The Blacks who did not lose a game on the field during the home and away season again did not let their fans down and progressed to their second successive G F they will take some stopping Old Ivanhoe tried very hard but were disappointed with their effort especially during the 2nd qtr where they were a bit undisciplined, but at least they fought out the 2nd half . Jules Maycock again put in a brave performance while Captain "Od" Caddy, Duca Jenkins, Donny Lowson, Sog Ongarello, and Mick Colledge all put in 4 qtr efforts . For the Blacks I thought Longley was pretty good and No . 34 was always dangerous up forward . PREVIEW - SENIOR S It appears as if the weather is to be cooler this week which is sure to please both sides . I'm sure the 'Hoes would have enjoyed their day in the sunshine watching the other 2 battle it out . It will be a real test of character to see if Old Geelong can bounce back this week, they must have been pretty shattered last game . There are some injuries and possibly a suspension hanging over them but in their favour is the fact Howells and Ritchie came through unscathed after long lay offs . Confidence is a big thing in football, Old Ivanhoe have plenty of it at the moment have peaked just at the right time and this will be enough to tip the scales in their favour and earn them a GF berth and the promotion that goes with it . PREVIEW - RESERVES Both Old Ivanhoe and St Kevins should be at full strength so the day should kick off on a high class note . The Hoes may be down a bit by last week's result and like OGs will have to bounce back hard . They will be inspired by Mick Colledge in his 100th game, - Wel l one Mick, but St Kevins have been playing well of late, have a fair sprinkling of Senior players and this will be the deciding factor, so I'll tip the SKOBS to earn the right to tackle the Blacks . Likely B&F Winner The big night at the Radisson awaits us now, always hard to pick when you only see sides twice during the year but I'll tack a punt and try and pick a victor. It should come from one of the following ; Marcus Olive (SKOBS), Stu Glascott (OGs), Tony McGeorge (Tigers), George Haros (Hoes), Danny Hall (Wicks) with the outsider Mark Cannon (Cy s) . PRESS CORRESPONDENTS : Only 2 weeks to go now, I know I'm at the games but keep the faxes coming in, your point of view could be different to mine . Don't forget the numbers Phone : 571 4808 and the Fax : 569 8766.

PERSONAL MILESTON E Old Ivanhoe would like to congratulate Mick Colledge on reaching 100 games . The Phantom' started playing with the U19's in 79, rose to the Seniors the following year and played in the '87 Premiership . Mick is famous for the dynamic style in which he plays football, the appalling state of his footy boots and the cosmopolitan lifestyle he leads down in St Kilda. Best of luck in the finals Mick, where he is our leading goalkicker in the Reserves,

REVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL Old Camberwell defeated a most determined Doveton by 6 pts in the Preliminary Final on Saturday. After kicking 7.3 to 0.1 in the opening qtr, Old Camberwell had to withstand a sustained recovery by Doveton to win . The recovery started in the 2nd qtr when Doveton kicked 4 .2 to 1 .4. However, two reports in the 2nd and 3rd qtrs proved costly for Doveton, Old Camberwell were able to steady and led by 25 pts at 3 qtr time . The final qtr was a beauty and although Doveton kicked 5 .8 to 3 .1 it was not enough to defeat a most courageous Old Camberwell who move up to ' D' Grade in 1994 and into next weeks Grand Final . Best player and leading goalkicker was Old Camberwell coach Graeme Ewart with 4 gis whilst for Doveton their best player was Jackson . In the ressies St Leos bounced back after their 2nd Semi Final defeat with an 81 pt win over Old Essendon . The two blues took control from the first qtr with aggressive running football and kept it up for the whole game . PREVIEW GRAND FINA L Well here we are down to the last and most important game of the year with this years Grand Final at Sandringham to be played between St Leos Wattle Park and Old Camberwell . In what should be a truly great game with both teams playing fast creative football . St Leos have been the form team all year and except for a loss in the first game have remained unbeaten and must start favourites, but Grand Finals are special days that can lift some teams to play above themselves, and Old Camberwell must do that if they are going to be competitive. Old Camberwell over the last 2 finals appearances has been inspirational especially by coach Graeme Ewart who St Leos will have to try and neutralise . In conclusion after what has been a very interesting year I'll have to select St Leos to win their second premiership in a row.

St Johns and St Marys will today meet for the fourth time this season when they take to the field in the 1998 F1 Grand Final at Mordalloc . St Johns overcame Peninsula last week in the Preliminary Final to earn their place in the Big One while St Marys had aweek off after winning their way through two weeks ago . In the Reserves, Peninsula overcame a tired St Johns side to gain another crack at Latrobe Uni and the Reserves premiership. REVIEW As predicted a confident St Johns side cruised into E Grade and theirfirst Grand Final with a 39 pt win over Peninsula at Mordialloc. Despite being down at quarter time, The Eagles fought back in the 2nd qtr and pushed clear in the last half, with stunning performances from Labrooy (4), Emery (56) and Doherty (22) . At the quarter time break, Eagles' Coach Mooney asked his players for a 6 gl term - and got exactly that . It was the first time this season that St Johns who made six changes to their losing second-semi final side, had beaten the Pirates . In the Reserves, an improved Peninsula overcame a weary St Johns to gain a place in their second consecutive Grand Final . The Pirates led at every change, surviving a 3rd qtr comeback by their opposition and hanging on to win by 28 pts . The Eagles struggled up forward with Levin and Brancatisano starring for the Pirates in the backline. PREVIEW St Marys and St Johns will fight it out for the covete d F1 Premiership Flat in today's Grand Final at Mordialloc . The sides have met on three occasions this year, with St Johns winning both of their home and away encounters and St Mary's getting up in their all-important second semi-final clash two weeks ago . St Marys have had the benefit of a week's break and will have the psychological advantage after their convincing 50 pt win in their recent meeting, St Johns however, will be on a high after last weeks impressive performance against Peninsula and will not want to throw away their first chance at Premiership glory. In what should be a close and tough physical contest, I'm going to go for St Johns to win their first premiership with a 32 pt victory. In the Reserves, Peninsula will be hoping to go one better than last year when they take on Latrobe Uni for the Reserves Premiership Flag . The Pirates will be keen to continue last week's matchwinning form against St Johns and will want to reverse their 44 pt loss to Latrobe in the second semi final . The loss to the Pirates Senior side last week also means that up to six players can sneak into the Reserves side, including a number of much-needed forwards. Latrobe, on the other hand, were close to unbeatable when they overcame the Pirates two weeks ago and, with a weeks break should be pumped up and ready to win . It's a difficult one, but after two perfect predictions last week, I have to go with my gut feeling again and pick Peninsula to sneak home by 8 pts in a thriller .

Well here we are. Grand Final time and believe me we have 2 great games in store . Congratulations to Yarra Valley on being promoted, just like Oakleigh they are also in their first year of VAFA football . I'd also like to thank my club press correspondents who have rang me during the year. I hope to see you all next year . REVIEW After leading at half-time Uni Reds could not go on and eventually were worn down by a faster and fitter Yarra Valley team to the tune of 37pts . PREVIEW Grand Final Oakleigh vs Yarra Valley at Northcote Park . This game will be won bytheteam which isthefittest, strongest and more skilful and when I tried to compare the two sides I came up with Yarra Valley as the fittest, Oakleigh as the strongest, and both teams were even in the skills department . The honours between both teams are shared with each having a win with Yarra Valley winning the first one by 2 pts, and Oakleigh the second game by 4 pts . The Krushers have been fortunate to get an easy passage to the grand final where Yarra Valley have had to come from the first semi final . Both sides have a great forwards and both boast the 1st and 2nd leading goalkicker in the comp . Oakfeigh with Forrest, Leslie and Alexandriou are three very dangerous players around goal and believe me when they get a sniff they will kick a bag between them . Yarra Valley on the other hand have Simpson with another 4 last Saturday is the key to this game . If he can set them alight i feel Yarra Valley will win this game, ((ook at the midfiefders where Yarra Valley rule supreme and wh o I feel are the best in this grade . All in all this should be a wiifgodownetotaewirevYarraValeleytocausteangp et and win this one by 3 pts .
Ressies Balwyn Combined with a weeks rest and practically a full list to choose from should be too talented for Oakleigh in this one Balwyn by 6 gJs to give the Krushers a dirty-day.

When you go to the football you want to enjoy the game . You don't want to be wet and cold or uncomfortable . You want warm, comfortable clothing that looks good but is tough enough to go a full four quarters . You want wool . Wool is naturally warm and insulates against extremes of temperature and helps keep you dry . Wool is longwearing, looks good, keeps its shape and is as Australian as Aussie Rules . When teamed with your favourite weekend jeans this 100% wool coat and roll neck sweater are an excellent match for a day at the football . You'll find them at Myer, Fletcher Jones and Sportscraft mens stores .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS GAMES Division 1- 1st Semi Fina l This was certainly "Webby's Day Out" . Before the game he told me he had a crook back but he wasn't going to miss the finals and could probably kick "a couple". Well, the couple turned out to be eight team lifting goals for the Bernies. Xavs were set back early with the unfortunate accidental loss of Hawkins and this possibly - and justifiably - had an effect on them . However, at no time were they the team I saw in the first half of the season, The talking wasn't there but the waiting for the good bounce was instead of attacking the ball and their poor shooting for goal made it a total of 25 gls 52 behinds overthe last 3 qames- not matchwinning stuff . Thanks to good consistent efforts from Coghlan, Dluzniak and Fitzsimons they got within a point early in the last quarter . Then we had the "Big Chatty" -"Little Chatty" - "Webby" show . "Big" betting the ball out of the centre to "Little" to "Webby" for 2 gfs in 2 minutes and that sealed it for Bernies . Bernies big men Mick Hande and Ashley McIntyre did well as did the new look "Lynchy" despite his couple of early entries into the square. Petroff managed to get 4 for Xavs despite the good effort from Pat Zeine at full back. Division 2 Central - 2nd Semi Fina l When I heard the 1/2 time score in this game I was amazed at the lead NOBs held - 7 gis - and thought I'd goofed again with my selection . However, in the 2nd half Parade kicked 17 gls to 5 to win easily. The 9 gls to 1 in the last qtr by the Bundoora Boys would seem as if they had a definite edge in fitness . Their goals were evenly spread with Morelli, Bellis and Horsington getting 4 apiece whilst Haddad did likewise for NOBs . Apart from the main scorers, Parade were best served by Anderson, Montgomery and Vacirca whilst NOBs best were the consistent Tonkin, Rush and Mattiazzi . Division 2 South - 2nd Semi Fina l Jackers showed a dramatic reversal in kicking accuracy in 2 halves of footy with 3/15 in the ist half and 10/3 in the 2nd to once again edge out the Tonners. A big 3rd qtr with 6 gls gave them enough margin to hold out in the last quarter Jackers form in recent pressure games has been very good and they fully deserve their 2nd consecutive Grand Final appearance, Tonners did weli to hold Rajch to only 2 majors but Moss snuck in for 4 and Gold - whose marking impressed the umpires' observer - got 3 . Tonners 13 majors were spread amongst 7 whilst their best were Wavish, Oliver and McNamara, Jackers best were Cukierman, Ingleman and Gold . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division 1 - 2nd Semi Final De La prepared last week for today's game by observing - with Esky - their future opponents whilst Nodders were watching their Ones make it to ' B' Grade . Judging by the benefits experienced by winners of my slab during the year, D's might have put in good training . However, Nodders have won both contests this year and should be logical favourites . Both teams could benefit
from their "Ones" - Nodders have a day off whilst D's have both senior teams playing this weekend . The early starttoday may give us a guide as to which team is better accustomed to hitting the sack early on a Friday night . Both of Nodders wins have been on the only couple of wet days for the year and, as I think D's are best suited to the dry and also the open spaces of H .Q., I think they can reverse the previous results between these two . Division 2 Central - Preliminary Fina l The last time NOBs and Carey met the Northerners won well . Since then, Carey have had some good wins none better than their convincing semifinal win over the Students. Reading through their team that day they were almost at full strength which they will need to be today if they are to go into the Grand Final . NOBs effort last week was creditable and I'm sure Jim will do his utmost to ensure that his lads don't have a second half fadeout again . Jobbo should have got over his jet lag sufficiently to make sure his boys don't get jumped again and give away a winning lead . Even though today is the first time this yea r them to have a hav see n hunch that Ct they c aI n know progress g tobnext week's Grand Final . (Sorry Val!!) . Division 2 South - Prelimina ry Fina l A few weeks ago, I expected Tonners and Collegians; to be Grand Finalists but Jackers put that theory to rest last week . I haven't seen either final so far but both teams seem to be at full strength . Collegians win over Bedas was an impressive one and I have no doubt that a repeat of that form will get them home today . However, there was nothing wrong with Tonners effort for 3!/2 qtrs last week and 4 qtrs today could make them winners . The last time they met it was only the "wind tunnel" that beat the Lions and on a neutral ground I think they will give a better display of disposal . There will only be a kick in the finish today and I think that it will be in the Tonners favou r _

(1913-93 ) Lindsay Hasset died in June . The flags at Lord's flew at halfmast in his memory on the opening day of the test . Amateur football has been the winter game for a number of outstanding test cricketers: Ian Johnson, Doug Ring, Ian Redpath, Ted A'Beckett, Ben Barnett, Sam Loxton, Keith Rigg, Graeme Watson are names that spring to mind . Lindsay Hasset was both the smallest and the best . A magnificent schoolboy cricketer and footballer at Geelong College, Lindsay joined Geelong Amateurs on leaving school His VAFA career was an outstanding one as he won the A' Section Best and Fairest in 1935 and 1936. His statistics in 1935 were 5'6" (1 .68m) and 9 .12 (62.7kg). Lindsay captained Geelong in both years, but without luck . They finished second in both years but were narrowly beaten in the semi-finals and did not make the grand final . It was to be the closest Geelong ever got to an A' Section premiership . As their scribe wrote, "Little Lindsay, all coolness and cleverness, revealed his ever-brilliant self, his passing never being more accurate . He kicked six of the best:" Lindsay made his debut in 'Sheffield' Shield cricket in 1932 and in test cricket in England in 1938 . He also toured England in 1948 and 1953 . He captained Australia in South Africa in 1949-50 and in England in 1953 . To quote from Christopher Martin-Jenkins' The Complete Who's Who of Test Cricketers, "A glorious right-handed attacking batsman by nature who often became dour and watchful at the wicket in his country's service . His footwork was superbly quick . Poker-faced, he was both a wit and practical joker, at home as much with `larrikins' as with Princes and Prime Ministers, possessing a charm and personality all his own ." Lindsay played 43 tests, and scored 10 centuries in his 3073 runs (average 46 .56) .

5 YEARS AGO - 198 8 Ormond and Old Paradians met in the second semi . Their previous second semi meeting was in 1963 when Ormond defeated O .Ps 13 .15 to 10.12 . Editor Peter F re nch picked Ormond, and later reported that the good judges who stand on' knowledge Hill' were saying "unbeatable", "awesome" after Ormond treated the spectators to as great a display of Amateur football that has been witnessed at Elsternwick Park". Ormond led 2 .5 to 2 .2 at qtr time, then kicked 6 to nil in the 2nd qtr and went on to win 31 .13 to 9.15 . Best were M . McDonald, Jobling, Kingston, Gilmore, Schuhkraft (6 gls .), Barnes (Orm .) and Beare, Canavan, Pritchard, M . Considine, M . Wood, P. Considine (O.P.) . Ormond were in the Grand Final a word of caution, the last two "A" Section flags had been won by teams entering the Grand Final via the preliminary. It had taken 38 years but Parkside made it to "A" Section when they gave Kew the "shakes" in "B" second semi . After the second half . Sedgwick, Connell, L . Panjari (P) and Thornby, Kalac, Smith (K) were the stars. It was a fairly physical game . Coach Wayne Bannister could be well pleased with his team's disciplined efforts . In a very exciting "C" Section Grand Final Old Melburnians beat Old Brighton 11 .10 to 10 .10. Best were Johnstone, Pisarski, B rown (O.M .) and Lade, O'Connor, Woff (O.B.) . The premiership side was - Bks: Sid Mead, Rick Pisarski, John Sarmsley H .B. : Will Ward-Ambler, Richard Seccull, Hec Thompson C: Tony Witts, Jeremy Nicholls, Richard Webb H .F. : Nick Johnston, Tim Stuckey, Ian McMullin F : David Ward-Ambler, Ed Corner, John Elam Rucks: Rohan B rown, Gre g Bradshaw, And rew Witts I/C: Wes Baglin, Ma rt in Crampton President: David Strange, Secretary: Simon Derham . Hampton Rovers were unable to break the 37 year drought when they went down 9 .11 to 12 .12 to Preston . Best for Rovers were Hartshorn, Hoggett, Austin . Whitefriars' inaccuracy, 6 .14 to Powerhouse's 6 .8 almost cost the Friars the game . Stars were Mark Reidy, C rowe, McClelland (Wh) and Sa rosi, Stafford, Hansen (P) . .Peter Wiseman created umpiring history when he became the first umpire to break down in an A" Section . No, he didn't just wear out, he sprained his ankle and was replaced by Russell Francis . 2nd SEMI FINAL 10 YEARS AGO - 1983 Mich Deveson (De La Salle) won 'A' Section B&F with 18 votes, defeating Michael Yeo (Uni Blues) and Peter Gittos (Ivanhoe) 15. Former Carnival and interstate player Wayne Blay (Kew) topped 'B' Section with 22 to win easily from Mark Sedgwick (Coburg), Gary. V Valiance (Alph .) and David Hackett (Old Camberwell) 15. 'C' Section was won by Charlie Capi ro n (St Kilda
CBOC) 19from David Matthews (Caulfield Gr) 17. De La surprised 'A' Section followers with a victory over the more fancied Blues, winning 15 .15to 13.7togointo the 'A' Section grand final . Fred Coldrey (Hampton Rovers) has filled the role of boundary umpire with distinct credit for 5 years . Full back, Jim Kennon, was outstanding at full back for Old Scotch . Stan Mullany, the Editor had received many invitations to attend Social functions arranged by clubs, and when possible was taking the world's recordbreaking marathon cyclist, Ossie Nicholson, to give a roller demonstration . The carnival was in Launceston . MHSOB complained that it was the only undefeated team in the competition and yet there was no MHSOB player in the side. Hampton Rovers boasted that for the third season in succession the sole interstate representative from 'D' Section was a Hampton Rovers player. States playing in the Carnival were Victoria, South Australia, West Australia, Canberra, Tasmania and New South Wales, with Victoria the victor. Victoria beat Tasmania by 13 gls, South Australia by 8 gls, and New South Wales by 6 gls . Victoria's best player at the Carnival was Ray Steele (U Blacks), while Alby Rodda (State Bank) and Wally Taylor (Collegians) won trophies against Tasmania and South Australia . In'C' Section, MHSOB notes'Alex Johnson made a dramatic debut at full back. This youngster used his great judgement and dash to wonderful advantage, marking the ball in the packs with mighty leaps'. U Blacks beat Ormond and State Savings beat Collegians in the series . They could certainly kick in those days, as SSBs notes stated 'The goal kicked by Alby Rodda from 130 yards out was the best ever seen on the Elsternwick ground' . The Blacks won the first of six successive finals, 1938, 39, 46, 47, 48, 49, (no competition, 1940-45) .

WEIGHT FOR 11' ! By Paul White, Weights Coach, Richmond F .C.
Waiting for that something extra to give you the winning edge - anew centre half forward, new training drills, motivational ideas? Well don't wait for it, train for it - with weights . Weighttraining, if properly conducted will improvethe physical condition, capabilities and therefore performance of footballers . Firstly, there should be a'general phase' in early preseason where playerswill be requiredto perform general conditioning exercises with relatively high repetitions (10-15) and lighter weights, aiming to build muscle mass which will enable greater strength gains in the next phase . From mid to late pre-season will be the'special phase'. The emphasis will be on strength gains by increasing the weight lifted in each set and lowering the repetitions (6-8) . Late pre-season to early season is the'specific phase' . The emphasis will be on exercises specific to football aiming to increase the power of the footballer. Repetitions should be low (2-5) and heavy weights lifted with emphasis on speed of movement. (power = strength x speed) As the season progresses and the other physical demands are placed on players, weighttraining should not be neglected . During the season would be the'maintenance phase where a strength and power gains achieved are maintained by a reduced but intense workload .
Perhaps weight training will add the variety of a new training drill . Perhaps your old centre half forward will become your new centre half forward! Players will respond differently both mentally and physically to weight training. Some become bigger, stronger and powerful while others won't respond as much but still show the benefits of a carefully structured weight training program . As with any training program the trick will be for the coach to find the right balance of all components of the program, making sure enough time is devoted to certain aspects of the program in order to show gains without neglecting others . With limited time available, certainly not an easy task. • Mid-range players may be the best alternative for your specialist coach . A player with good ball skills - as Skills Coach, the best athlete as Fitness Coach (or assistant), a good kicker as Kicking Coach and a player who enjoys weights as Weights Coach . This would share the responsibilities and improve team unity, with these coaches sharing the training times that is often left to the one person . As well as enhancing the players ability, each player/specialist coach would learn more about each facet of training, thus becoming a good resource forthe younger players and giving you more time to plan and manage your team .

UMPIRES CORNER by Mike Murray
and Steve McCarthy ® With the first f i nals appointments it gave 'the Master Wordsmith' the opportunity to prove that he knows his umpires . After checking the low azimuth there were a few hiccups with the odd first name - luckily Benny was there to help out. Unfortunately Billy Fowler became Billy Flower and Leo Wilson became Leo Whistle . We also gained a new club called BulleenlTempleton . In presenting the Woody Award we heard that Vinny Vescovi's wife used it as a tool . But the award was presented to Leisa Henry for her services to 'raffles' . • Highlights of the last umpires association meeting for the year. Chris Keeton decided it was to be a sixcan meeting - they didn't last long . President Murray broke his gavel again in his last official meeting as Prez . Daggles presented the White Wacker and a few associated awards . The White Wacker was won by Chuck Hinton, the Kit Kat strike-rate award was won by Jacko, and the Media award was picked up (after it was spat into the dirt) by Paul La Vale . Robert Bell won the member's draw. After much deliberation the officebearers for 1994 were elected . This is howthey ended up. President: Peter Keogh Vice President: Richard Simon . Secretary: Justin Toohey Assistant Secretary: Peter Harris Treasurer: Stephen Hopper Assistant Treasurer: John Kelly Social Secretary: Andrew Kilner Executive Members: Wayne Hinton and Wayne Henry VAFA Delegate: Kevin Segota Auditor: David Hindle. Well done guys - have a successful 1994 . Unfortunately John Natoli failed to pick up a spot and the question was asked, "Is Bushy Natoli's puppet? " ® We'd like to wish Wayne Henry a speedy recovery after his recent injury forced him out of his second semi last weekend . Terrible luck at this time of year . We look forward to seeing you back on the track next year. ® This weeks umpire profile is on a young goal umpire who chalks up his century with the VAFA today - Name : Andrew William Hogan . Nickname : Hoges. Year Commenced Umpiring : 1989. VAFA Games: 100 today. 1991 A Reserve Grand Final, Hi hl' 1992 U/19 Section 1 Grand Final, 1992 VSFL U/18 First Semi-final . Greatest Influence on Career : Kevin Barke r
and Brian Woodhead . Football playing career: East Malvern under elevens . Football pet hates : Hot dogs with stale bread rolls, or worse still, no hot dog before a game. Most memorable match : 1992 Ballarat vs Central (VSFL Uf18's) . Subzero temperature, pouring rain, at night, called off at half-time . Three players had Hyperthermia. Best amateur footballer seen: Rick Pisarski (Old Melburnians), Brett Mahoney(De LaSalle), John Panetta (Old Haileybury reserves) . Best Umpires : Garry Baumgarten, Bernie Hoare, Dennis Webster. What I like about umpiring : Being part of a team on match day, and being involved in footy despite having no playing talent at all . Also hotdogs with cheese. Personal ambition: To umpire the big one (A Grade Grand Final) and never miss a pre-match hotdog . Well done Hoges - enjoy the finals series . • Congratulations to one of the newer clubs Mazenod OC on its promotion to B Section for 1994. The Noddies joined the VAFA in 1989 and have made fantastic progress in that short time . Let's hope that some of the other newer clubs can also rise as fast . Good luck St Leos Wattle Park, Oakleigh, Yarra Valley Old Boys, St Marys and St Johns OC. These clubs are playing in grand finals today and we wish them well . ® It's also getting down to the wire for the umpires as well . Less and less appointments including the first senior grand finals this weekend . Hope we can all have a great end to the season . • With the end of season upon us the social calendar starts to get busy - don't forget September 11 - C Grade Grand Final and Presidents Open Fridge Night at Elsternwick Park . September 16 - The Elsternwick Pub Run and last official training night . September 19 - A Grade Grand Final followed by free BBQ at Elsternwick . September 24 - Dinner Dance at Auburn Heights Bowling Club - with that extravagent menu . October 8-10 - End of year trip to Swan Hill . Mike and Macca
