REVIEW I hate to say I told you so, but I did . De La Salle, the old hands of finals football, came up trumps (by less than 15 points, as predicted) over the O. Xaverians in last Sunday's second semi final . Despite perfectfootball conditions, except for a bit of a breeze, scoring was relatively hard to come by, with only 18 goals kicked for the game . In fact, neither side had any dominant forwards - well none that kicked any goals, as both defences were well on top . De Lajumped the Xavs with greater pace and judgement . However their 8 shots at goal only resulted in two goals - perhaps nerves had the better of them . Despite leading by 10 pts at the first break De La were against the wall as the Xavs had use of the wind in the second term . And use it they did! De La, mainly through the dour defence of John McKay, were hardly able to bother the Xavers, registering only 1 behind as the Xavs slammed on 4.3 to go to the long break with a commanding 16 pt lead . At this stage De La looked gone, but finals football is all about G & D, and De La have lots of both! Sam Hunter and Pat Mannix were doing well in defence and Mick Dillon along with Slatery and Crowe clawed their way back into the game . When De La get a sniff they sure get a big one . 7.5 to 4 behinds in the 3rd term and the horse had bolted! The Xavs certainly had their work cut out forthem if they were to earn a Grand Final berth . De La led by 27 points at 3/4 time, and even with the wind the Xavs looked to have lost confidence, system and momentum . De La Salle had broken the back of the opposition in a typical De La finals display . The Xavs, to their credit, kept battling and nearly got back into the game, but a crucial "play on call" when Mick Blood had a shot at goal saw a major chance go to waste. Dermott Dann and Richard Green battled hard all day, but the Xavs will have to regroup and start to believe in themselves if they are to get a berth in the big one. The wind has been a problem for the Xaverians all season and don't be surprised if we only have windy days at Elsternwick Park for the remaining two games, which means that the Xavs should have a training run on the beach (or somewhere near it) . Well done De La, you proved yourself again and you deserve to play in your 3rd G&F in a row. PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIE W Collegians take on the Old Xaverians in the preliminary final to see who earns the right to challenge De La Salle for this year's A-section premiership . The Lions came back to form with a stunning victory over North Old Boys two weeks ago . The win was even more impressive when we consider the form reversal that Collegians had to display . The Old Xavs had De La "on toast" last weekend, but collapsed under the pressure in the second half - not a good sign . In July, the Xavs outpointed Collegians at the Lakeside Oval in an impressive display, however a lot of water has passed under the bridge since them .
It is difficult to work out exactly where Collegians' strength is. Their forward set up is not overly powerful and the on-ballers depend mainly on Matt Galbraith . Brett Jefferson and Chris Pollock will have to perform attheir peakto keep Stuart Colquhoun and Mick Blood under control . There is little doubt that the battle of the day should be between Doug Bailey, if he plays, and Rick Schober - both key players in their respective teams. The versatility of Dan Richardson, if fit, and Brad Woolhouse could see either player lining up in defence or attack, but both probably play better up the back . Across the centre Mark Hibbins and Gary Irvine will take on Dale Tapping and John Bowen . Tapping has been rarely sighted in the past month, but form could only be a game away. The Lions have a dashing half back line . Jim Bennett, Aaron Harrison and Steve Laussen are all good and with Stuart Hinchen and Andrew Wright mopping up the crumbs in the last line, Xaverian goals will be hard to come by. The Xavs, too, have a great defence with David and John McKay, Dermott Dann and Justin Hubert, all playing good football . At the fall of the ball Anthony McDonald and Richard Green take on Michael Lake and David Kerr with the Xavs holding an edge in this area . On paper both teams are inseparable, but on form Collegians are preferred . The Xavs may have learnt a great deal from last week's encounter, but they could also have lost a bit of belief . Experience and form should see the Lions roar today, but only after a titanic battle . May the best team win . Collegians by 10 points . THIS SERVICE IS AGAIN OPERATING FOR THE SEASON AND WILL OFFER THE FOLLOWING : • Participating teams and venues for following weekend's finals matches (Monday) • Umpire appointments for weekend matches - to assist clubs in supplying officials when required (Friday) • Final siren scores of all matches played (Saturday evening ) Service provided courtesy of Computer Implementation Consultants, Port Melbourn e ® EDITORIAL continued from page i . . . Although spoilt by a lot of unnecessary noise and lack of courtesy whilst other section's votes were being counted, the VAFA Vote Count night at the Radisson Hotel showed that this type of "all on the one night format" is the way to go. Perhaps in the future by counting the votes of only a couple of sections and just presenting trophies to the winners of the other sections may make the evening less tedious for those who don't like votes being read out for most sections. Congratulations to all the winners - obviously to be recognised as the best player in your section is a wonderful accolade to a season which must hae a
blending of brilliance and consistency. Congratulatins to : • Adam Anderson - 0. Last Monday the VAFA held its second annual Gala Vote Count Night . The night saw all sections A - F2 inclusive, have their last 3 rounds counted . The counting of the 1's, 2's and 3's made for some close results and three ties in all (more information - see editorial) . Some highlights were as follows . Magician Tim Ellis and his lovely assistant Lisa pulled the wool over good sport Steve Carroll's eyes or was it toilet paper in more ways than one. Then Pete 'Agate' Harris and his doctors assistant routine was magnificent . Where that balloon was hidden and whose hand found it only 'Agate' will know . To see Agate' boogyingto'Hippy-Hippy-Shake' brought more than a tear to the eye . And what of co-major sponsor Dental Health Se rv ices' Kellie-Ann Jolly and her rope tricks. What a good sport after being plucked from the crowd to outwit the magician, whose hands were obviously quicker than the eye. *~~t The lucky prize draw won by Adrian Tucker from Eltham OC, was a night for two at the Radisson with breakfast next morning . With Adrian just recently engaged Eddie McGui re was quick to point out the chance to 'pop the question'. While on the topic of Eddie McGuire, the M .C. for the night was brilliant . Although a few may not have heard him due to constant chatter throughout . Eddie's professional approach to public speaking was a joy to witness, his easy going and happy nature really added admirably to the evening . Well done Eddie . Come the close of the evening the `regulars' headed to the downstairs bar, whereby they continued the celebrations of the medal winners . And then it was on to Santa Fe Gold where the entertainment was light or dark or in between and the celebrations eventually petered out. All in all an enjoyable nightwhere all sections were able to mingle and mix with one another . What of the 'Rovers' tips last week . In A Section De La proved us wro ng by narrowly defeating Old Xavs. The OMs in B Section proved they have Therry's measure for the third time in '93 . Ajax made it 2 out of 3 for the 'Rover' with a strong finish against Ivanhoe in C Section . The OGs ran away from Old 'Hoes in D to advance to the Grand Final and C Section in '94 . Old Camberwell proved too good for St Leos and destroyed what appeared an odds on bet in E . St Marys in F1 mirrored their 2nd Semi performance and defeated St Johns to make it 4 out of 6 . Oakleigh made sure it remained at

4 out of 7 against Yarra Valley in F2 . with a clean sweep of U/19 1, South and Central 7 out of 10 improves our strike rate marginally. Turning to this weekends games and predictions are as follows : A Section : Old Xavs must rebound and regroup if they are to challenge De La Salle for the A Section pennant next Sunday. Collegians have twice been defeated by Xavs this season but finals experience, which Collegians possess in abundance, cannot be discounted . In the wash up Xavs may lack that edge if its close, which we believe it will be, and Collegians are the tip . B Section : Uni Blues the firm side of B Section take on Therry who were narrow losers last weekend against Old Melburnians . Both sides ooze youth and skill with Therry the edge in experience . And this is where it will be won on the day. Therry to win . C Section : Mazenod battle Ajax in what promises to be an attacking and extremely offensive game . Both teams have shown a liking for still dry weather, the type that prevails at Elsternwick Park during September. It promises to be an enthralling struggle . With all things said and done Ajax for mine in what will be a game not to be missed . D Section : Old Geelong play St Bedes/Mentone Tigers at Brunswick in what appears an even contest . However the Tigers are buoyed by their excellent form of late and should prove too strong for the OGs today . U19 Sec. 1 : De La are matched against giant killers St Bernards today at Oakleigh . St Bernards have not taken a backward step since mid-season and have taken all before them . In big games De La are worthy favourites, but a sneaking suspicion tells us that St Bernards are on a roll . U19 Central : NOBs overcame Old Carey to earn the right to play Old Paradians at Mordialloc today. The result was in Paradians favour last time and this will continue today. U19 South : Collegians take on Ajax and with form one would tend to favour Ajax, however 1 game in the last 3 weeks may tell . Collegians on the other hand have come from 4th spot and have deserved the chance to challenge Ajax . In what will be a tight contest . Ajax to win . ~t~t* Congratulations are extended to Mark Simpson of Yarra Valley Old Boys (F2) who despite playing in a losing Grand Final last weekend kicked his 100th goal for the season . Congratulations Mark .
Next week a complete run down of those teams promoted to new sections, and C - F2 Grand Final results. * **

B SECTION by David Hollan d REVIEW - 2ND SEMI FINA L Old Melburnians turned the tables on their disappointing '92 Finals Series last Saturday, when they defeated Therry in the 2nd Semi to earn a spot in The Big One" next week and a ticket to A Grade in '94 . I n perfect football conditions, the crowd witnessed a sensational game of footy which had everything and went right down to the wire . OM's went into the game without skipper Jeremy Nicholls, CHB Tim Stuckey and HF Will Ward-Ambler, all unavailablethrough injury, whilstTherrywere at full strength . The 1st qtr was, as expected, a scramble for kicks, and was highlighted by some fierce tackling . OM's "Alvin" Theodore and Therry's Tim "The Toolman" Taylor were reported and sent off at opposite ends of the Ya for very minor altercations and it was fairly obvious from the outset that there was a genuine feeling in this game. After kicking into a slight breeze, Therry held a 1 gl lead at the 1st break . Paul O'Brien and Roger Ellingworth called for a lift in the work rate at 1/4 time from the OM's and, initially their call was answered . Andy Witts set up Micah Berry for his second, Scott Teal started to get into the game and Simon Theodore . . . if you don't mind! . . . took an absolute screamer on Grand Stand wing, and should have been wearing a parachute! So things were looking better for OMs - however, Damien Dalgleish and David Wrigglesworth had other things in mind when they put Therry back in front . OMs seemed to stop a little after Paul Matton put a goal through and on to the Golf Course, but Scott Teal took a great grab shortly after and goaled to see his side trailing by 16 pts at 1/2 time. What they put in the cordial at OMs, I don't know, but whatever it was, it worked . Oms took the honours in the 3rd term, booting 5 .4 to Therry's 1 straight. Scott Teal dominated after being moved to FF, although his kicking left a lot to be desired, and Simon Fraser proved a better option than Scott Oliver at CHF A magnificent tackle from little Billy Fafatoulis inspired OMs as Andy Witts booted 2 and Teal 1 before the last break where they led by 12 pts . 3 Therry goals in the 1st 8 minutes of the last qtr put them back in front and one sensed that they would go on from there but OMs would not give in . Theodore and Teal booted 1 & 2 respectively to again put OMs in the lead by 15 pts . Therry came again and although it was a valiant effort, there was no way Tony Witts and Co were going to see that lead change again . The jubilant Melburnian side were over the moon at final siren, and rightly so, however, in the back of their minds I bet they know it's not the last they'll see of Therry this year. The highlight of the OMs win was their brilliant backline led by Tony Witts who was B .O.G . for mine . John Zanetti, whilst sometimes inconsistent, is a dangerous player and to hold him to 2 gls was a match-winning effort . Witts was well supported by Rob Nelson who filled in for Tim Stuckey and was a tower of strength . "Minnie" Thompson, Pete Handbury, Richard Webb and Paul O'Brien were all great players at grou nd level and Scott Teal finished with 5 and should have had 10 ! The consistent players all year for Therry were again
the backbone of their side. "Chief" Petrevski proved too tall for Chris Bryan, whilst across the centre, Mick Goodwin, Damien Dalgliesh, Paul Matton and Dennis Castaldi were excellent players . PREVIEW - PRELIMINARY FI N A L B Section has a weeks breather from EP as we travel to Northcoteforthe Preliminary Final between Uni Blues and Therry. For the winner - A Grade and a shot at the title ; for the loser - Zip! The 2 sides go into the game 1 a piece this year, Therry with the 1st-up honours by 69 pts, Uni in the return bout by 10 pts . The Blues have been in greatform since mid-season and capped it off with an impressive win over Mentonians in the 1st Semi 2 weeks ago . In that game, Tom Hutchins was on fire but what stood out most was the Blues defence - Travis O'Brien, Nathan Cavalier, Andrew Wilson and Paul Stephen proving an excellent combination . Throw in Toby McIntyre who has been great all year, and it adds up to problems for Therry . If O'Brien was watching Tony Witts last week he'll know how to handle Zanetti whilst Cavalier will probably pick up McKay or Wrigglesworth . Mid field and some exciting duels evolve on paper. Therry's chief ball winners in Dalgleish, Matton, Castaldi and Goodwin do battle with Nathan Harris, Hamish Worsley, John Kanis and Tim Harris - The importance of centre breaks cannot be underestimated and both sides have excellent providers in this department . Up forward for the Blues, Chris Taylor and Greg Lochhead are the keys with Tom Hutchins an obvious alternate option . Simon Eastmure would bethe best bet on Lochhead if fit, whilst Steve Boyle could well get the job on Taylor leaving Lou Caruana to pick up Hutchins . The big problem forthe Blues is Mick Petrevski in the ruck who far outweighs Jack Frith in height, strength and experience and if the Chief takes over it will be curtains for Blues . Although very impressive in their last outing, the Blues perhaps lack an important ingredient in finals footy and that is physical strength and therefore the ability to use this to ascertain an early advantage on the game - it is, on the other hand, an asset Therry relies upon each week. It would be fantastic for Grant Williams' young side to get up here today in Grant's 1st year as Coach, however, I tend to lean towards Therry who were by no means disgraced last week and will be very keen to make amends and have another crack at OMs in the Grand Final . Therry to win a beauty by 7 pts. Good luck to both Clubs. Once again, Grant and John, a more detailed summary of the game would be appreciated Cheers . Congratulations to Lincoln Burns (Banyule) and Ro b "Henry" Lawson on winning the B Section B&F last Monday. Also my congratulations to Guyan Stroud (Old Mentonians) and Tim Harris (Uni Blues) who were equal 3rd . Top effort from all 4 guys .

C SECTION by Ken Bremne r
First and foremost, congratulations to all section B&F winners announced last Monday evening at the Raddison . What a great night it was and compliments to the Executive for the conduct of the night . In particular, a big well done to Ga ry White of the Kew Football Club for winning the'C' Grade Medal . My soup handed out 2 weeks prior to the end of the season obviously had no ill effect on 'Whitey' as he polled votes in the last round vs Mazenod . REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL ( 4 September) Seniors - Ivanhoe vs Aja x In the 1st stanza the'Jackers had 90% of control but continually squandered opportunities near and around goals. Ivanhoe were under intense pressure but to their credit tackled their way back into the game to the extent that every foray forward resulted in full points . 5 to be precise and by siren time lead 5-4 (34) to 3-6 (24) . The 2nd qtr was to see Ajax far more productive with 'Ace' Gordon and 'Sheeza' on target . Rozenberg was dominating the centre square battles and giving his engine room players on armchair ride . The'Hoes could offer little resistence but still managed to tumble through 3 majors to keep themselves in the game . Ajax well served by Bloom, Marks and a better effort from Goetz bagged 7 for the term and lead the'Hoes 10-11 (71) to 8-7 (55) at the long interval . The Premiershipterm once again saw Ajax dominant without being able to 'nail' the coffin shut on Ivanhoe. The' Hoes counter-attacked very well being hard at the ball and man (legitimately) and clawed their way back into things to trail narrowly (6 pts) at lemon time . The scene was set for a ripper last qtr. Ajax were first to score through Gordon but then 2 quickies per the boot of Ford from Ivanhoe levelled things up at the 10 minute mark . Someone had to stand up and take the game by the scruff of the neck . Enter big 'Rozey' to again exert his supremacy in the middle and feed the runners and ram home 3 telling majors to not only steady the ship but break the back of the gallant 'Hoes . Ajax through to the G/F 23 pt victors 20-16 (136) to Ivanhoe 16-17 (113) . Reserves In an absolute cliffhanger with little separating the 2 teams throughout the day, Mazenod stuck their noses in front for the first time just prior to 3 qtr time and managed to hang on for the remainder to get home 4 pt winners in a controversial finish . Least said about the point that was a goal or vice-versa the better . The result stands and as big Rexxy would say, Yibbety Yibba Da! that's all . PREVIEW - GRAND FINAL ( 11 September) Seniors - Mazenod vs Aja x The 'Nods have headed the table all year long and deservedly enter the big one as favourites . Their demolishing job on Ivanhoe was very workmanlike in the 2nd Semi and as a team unit are playing with a lot of confidence to match their undisputed abilities . The weeks rest wouldn't have done any harm either I would suspect . On the credit side for Ajax is the fact that they've named valuable exoerience from their 2 finals
appearances thus far and will lack nothing on the fitness score nor confidence level . My concern with Ajax is their inability to 'finish' off a side after they've got them begging for mercy . If they can jump the 'Nods then they must quickly go for the 'jugular' or else they'll leave themselves wide open for a counter attack by the opposition . All things being even it's the Mazenod crew for me, yes at long last I'm jumping on the wagon . The 'Nods by 24 pts . Best wishes to all concerned and may the very best team take the honours on the day. Rese rves I've said all along I'm on the MHSOBs bus and I see no reason to jump off now at the death knock. Big ' Kotza' will have his charges pumped up and with 'Rotten' Ronnie in the goalsquare for target practice I think they'll just shade the Mazenod troops in what should prove to be a crackerjack warm-up game for the big one . Guest Tipste r One of the best credentialled coaches (without portfolio) in the VAFA, and I refer to John Keenan offers these prognostications (pearls of wisdom) for todays games ; Seniors - Mazenod have been the side to beat all year and their evenness and great depth of talent should get them home in a close encounter. Reserves - Different circumstances here . At this level of football I often think it is betterto be playing continually. 2 good hard games for Mazenod and only 1 in 3 weeks for MHSOBs . I lean towards the 'Nods in another close one. Danny Hall (Blond 'Bombshell' of Brunswick AFC 'D' Grade) . Seniors - Mazenods striking win in the 2nd semi was all polish and class and I believe they'll hold too many trump cards for the Ajax team . Rese rv es - Again I think Mazenod will take out the flag in this one too. Close finishes in their past 2 games stand them in good stead to fight out another nailbiter with the result their way by 6 pts . ÂŽ SEE PAGE 11 FOR B&F RESUL T

TIPSTER TO BE UPSTAGED ? It might be remembered that Ken Bre mner, C Section tipster and maker of dares, finished up having to clean and polish 20 pairs of Caulfield Grammarians' boots after that club's shock win against Mazenod six weeks ago. We're wondering, however, if he's going to be upstaged . Seems that long-standing VAFA personality/stalwart Nugget Stephens announced last week before the game that if Old Geelong defeated Old Ivanhoe he would have his hair cut exactly like OGs player Cullen Gunn . And as Gunny had just had one of the shortest "convict cuts" you'll ever see, the result could be more than interesting .

C 5EC7 10" N TONY PAATSCIJ -11YAZENO D The team's record this season speaks for itself . Two games plus percentage, clear on top, clearly showsthat Mazenod has been a very consistent side . This is something that the Mazenod OCAFC has worked very hard to achieve. We, like nine other sides atthe start of the 1993 season, set our sights on playing off for the C-section pennant . We have deserved our chance at the pennant, but are fully aware that we have only now one team between us and the C section Premiership.
Our side is capable and will be well prepared on the day. Nc game is easy, let alone afinal, and we are aware that our opponent today is well credentialed . We recruited well in the off-season and are ready to peak on this extremely important day for the club. I would like to thank the club administration, club supporters and all of the players for their support throughout the season, and let's finish as we started - with a win !
MARK SARAU - AJA X In my first year as coach of the Ajax football club, much like Tony, I am eagerly awaiting this coming Saturday. The club as a whole is keen to grasp this opportunity to win the C section pennant . It is some time since the club has won a premiership at senior level, although we have been promoted as runners-up previously. The players are keen to make themselves a part of club history . It has been a rewarding year both on and off the field, but we are fully aware that today's game is the pinnacle of the season . This week there has been enormous spirit and enthusiasm around the club, and the added bonus
of our U19 team also playing in a Grand Final this weekend has attributed greatly to our build up . We realise there is one team only, standing in our pursuit of the C section Premiership, and will not sell them short by any stretch of the imagination . However, we have performed well in recent weeks and are keen for Saturday to arrive. All the club officials, especially Ernie Chemy, have been of enormous support to myself and the players, and it is with their astute guidance and forethought that the Ajax players today will reward these hardworking people and themselves with a victory.

Congratulations to the OGs who after the disappointment of last week really turned things around to earn promotion to C-Grade forthe first time since 1969 which really is a good effort . One must praise Stuart Glascott for the work he put in during the weekto restore confidence into his side. Also congratulations to Marcus Olive on his great season duly rewarded with the D Section Best & Fairest . REVIEW - SENIORS Hard for me to do a review this week as I did not see the game due to the Rovers enjoying end of season festivities in Hobart, so we will go on the words of the scribe from OGs who has written this column in the past . Thank you Mr. Lemon. Old Geelong fought back in great style to make amends for their drubbing the week before and earn the right to tackle the Tigers for the flag this week. The 1st qtr was low scoring, the Hoes were very physical and strong at the ball . John Manton showed plenty of courage to come back after a heavy bump, while the OGs forwards were off line and wasted a few vital opportunities. I n the second term the OGs got their act together and showed some glimpses of the team which played so well early in the season with all players contributing well . Stu Glascott was again leading by example, and Fridge Herman was strong in defense, their half time lead was hasty but certainly not unbeatable . Old Ivanhoe hit back with 2 quick goals at the start of the championship quarter to reduce the lead to just 9 pts, visions of their 11 gl 3rd qtr just a fortnight ago quickly sprang to mind, but the OGs who did not want to see victory pass them by steadied, kicked a couple of goals themselves and managed to keep the Hoes in check, so much so that they did not score another goal until well into the last quarter. Dan Ritchie and Adam Howells certainly benefitted from their hit out last week and were running into plenty of match fitness, the marking of the Wilson Brothers brought plenty of applause . James Hutchinson in defense was one of a number of players including Herman, Manton, Dunn and Ferguson who contributed to a very fine win for the OGs . For the Hoes who must have been disappointed, but still had a good season to finish 3rd is no disgrace, John Stevens, Ryan, Beal, Sigley, Farlecas and Tozer all tried hard . REVIEW - RESERVE S As predicted this was a hard slogging battle and not pretty football but the SKOBS persistence, its tackling and willingness to match it with the opposition really stood out. Bad kicking is bad football and Skobbers inaccuracy always gave Old Ivanhoe a chance, but it was to no avail as St Kevins held on, and so take on the hot favourites this week. Best for the victors were centreman Paul Meagher, half back Matt Chapman, Mr Cougar McKaige and ruckman Jon Sargeant . PREVIEW - SENIORS The Tigers would have enjoyed their rest while the
OGs ba tt led it out, only 2 games in 4 weeks is perhaps not the ideal situation in which to enter a big game like a Grand Final, but I'm surethey have been working hard on the track, and in a tough encounter one feels the fresher legs will be just enough to get them home, and so win the flag in the first year of the merger . PREVIEW - RESERVE S The Blacks are sitting ducks not having lost a game on the field this year, this perhaps is not a good thing, I'm going to go for the jugular here and tip St Kevins to cause a major upset and win the premiership ; and thus send Cougar into retirement on a fine note. PRESS CORRESPONDENTS : Just one effort to go, I realise it will be hard with all the celebrations, but let's finish on a high note with all sides making contact . Thanks to Don Dowell from Old Ivanhoefor his excellent input during the year. Don't forget the numbers Phone : 571 4808 and the Fax : 569 8766 by Monday night . "-J

A GRAND FINA L 100 AT SKOB Today's Grand Final against Uni Blacks marks an important milestone for SKOB 'strongman' Hartley Stone, who plays his 100th game . Coming from the school back in 1986 (with mates Yogi & Droogy) Yonnie established himself early as a key position player in the seniors either in the ruck, full fwd or C.H .F., and quickly earned the respect of opponents with his size, strength and then, speed . Time is unfortunately catching up with this larger than life 25 year old, whose 40 year old body is not coping too well with the rigours of modern football . Three dislocated shoulders however has not deterred Yonnie from getting back into the Resies for this finals campaign, such isthe dedication and spirit of the man, he is an inspiration to all at St Kevins, and along with his dad, Richard, works just as hard off the field for the club, as he does on . Congratulations Yonnie, a Grand Final victory is just what you, and the club deserve .

GRAND FINAL capped off a brilliant final series by The last quarter St Leos tried to bridgethe gap but some Old Camberwell winning both Senior and Reserve Grade Grand Finals undisciplined play resulted in a number of players being against St Leos Wattle Park at Sandringham last sent off . In the end Old Camberwell ran. out winners by Saturday. Old Camberwell had to win the last game of 35 pts and became worthy Premiers the season to make the finals and won three finals games Old Camberwell carried out first year coach Graeme the ruck, to win the Premiership . Ewarts match plan to perfection, controlling Old Camberwell started the game on fire and not for centre and marking contests . Nineteen-year-old Anthony inaccurate kicking could of been even further ahead than Hardenberg and rugged defender Simon Ballard were the 24 pts at quarter time . St Leos rallied in the 2nd qtr unbeatable . Club President Bryan Horskins can feel very in 1992 to to be only 9 pts down at the main break . St Ma ry s became the 1993 F1 Premiers with a convincing win over St Johns in the Grand Final last Saturday . It was the club's second VAFA premiership flag since joining the Association in 1990 . In the Reserves, Latrobe University were too strong for Peninsula taking out their second VAFA F Reserve Premiership Flag . REVIEW Despite my prediction a confident St Ma rys were too strong for a disappointing St Johns eventually coming home to snatch the flag with a 43 pt win . Despite trailing by 23 pts at qtr time and 19 pts at half-time, the Saints fought back with a stunning last half to notch up their second VAFA Premiership Flag (their last was in 1990) . With a best-on-ground performance by star forward, Paul Rosenblum, St Marys hit the front in the third-quarter with a goal on the siren and kicked on convincingly in the final term . Coach Dick Clay was ecstatic after the win, thanking his players for a gutsy win and commiserating with his worthy opponents . It was the second time St Marys had defeated St Johns this season, both occurring in the finals series . Well done to Coach Mooney and StJohns, who despite finishing in second place, have had a sensational year and thoroughly deserve their E Grade promotion . In the Reserves Latrobe Uni won their first F Grade Reserves Flag since 1983 with a strong victory over Peninsula . After a reasonably even first half, Latrobe came out with guns blazing in the last half, kicking 7 gls to 1 against the wind in the 3rd term, and holding on in the last to win by 29 pts . Despite courageous performances from Peninsula's Crowder, Manns and Franks, Latrobe took the glory with the help of star players Weeks, Richards, Lewis and McNamara . Commiserations and congratulations to Sambo and his boys, who must be getting sick of being bridesmaids, (after being runner-up last year) and all the best for next season . PREVIEW Although it's all over for F1 in 1993, next seaso n promises to be as exciting and unpredictable as this one . Farewell to St Marys and St Johns, who are going to E Grade for bigger and better things, and to Old Carey and West Brunswick, who will be hoping to regroup in F2 (or G Grade) . A warm welcome to Oakleigh AFC and Yarra Valley, who won their way through from below. and to ANZ Bank and Elsternwick, who have returned after a brief stay in E Grade . BEST & FAIRES T Congratulations to Peter Barry, the Captain of St Pats Mentone, who won the F1 Section B&F at the Vote Count Night last Monday . Peter, who has won his club's B&F on two occasions (including this year), is an outstanding player and loyal clubman who thoroughly deserves the accolade. Well done also to second-placed Tony Huebner of St Marys who polled 19 votes . The top 5 players who polled the highest votes were as follows:
1 . Peter Barry (St Pats) 2 . Tony Huebner (St Marys) 3. Simon McMahon (POB) 4. John Jackson (West B.) 5. Michael Brennan (Sal ) 5. Brendan LaBrooy (St Johns)

Firstly apologies to De La re the "Ownership' of the Junction Oval Esky. I certainly had the "Kiss of Death" working well last week with a big zero score in the tipping dept . following on from my perfect score the previous week . REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS GAMES Division 1 Nodders continued this year's supremacy over De La with a hard fought 8 pt win . Both teams really only had 11/2 good quarters with De La's best being the 1st qtr and the last half of the 3rd . Nodders recovered from a bad first stanza with a good 2nd qtr and 1st half of the 3rd . Both slogged it out in a lacklustre last qtr with Nodders advancing to their first Div . One Grand Final . Morgan was a handfull forthe D's defenders and finished up with 5 majors whilst Stanley's goal from the centre square really gave Nodders a boost . Other good efforts for them came from McCusker, Fisher and Hansen who provided a lot of running play . The very even D's team were best served by Larkin, Gleeson, Smith and Andrew Grant (the VAFA's "Diesel" ) Division 2 Centra l NOBs capped their return to U19 football with a sound win over Carey. Val blames Carey's loss on me for tipping them to win but I, and a couple of others, thought they lost because they didn't all put in a 100% effort and far too often let NOBs be first to the ball . NOBs looked to be comfortably placed at 1/2 time with a 6 gl lead but C's were able to almost get on even terms 1/2 way th rough the last 1/4 and it looked as if NOBs were going to repeat their previous week's 2nd half fade out . Goalsneak Chris McMahon then chipped in for a goal and C's lost their momentum . A couple more majors for NOBs enabled them to run out comfortable winners. NOBs best were Dix, Mattiazzi and Borello whilst Haddad kicked 5 . Carey's Lee battled hard as did Walsh and Dunn whilst the injured (?) Morrison tried hard all day . Division 2 Sout h I only saw the 2nd half of this game and it must have been a reversal of the 1st half . Tonners lead by 4 at 1/2 time and, with the breeze, were 6 gls up coming up to time on in the 3rd . Then the Lions inspired by Palmer cut loose notched 5 against the breeze to be only 9 pts down atthe last change . They went on from there in the last qtr and, despite a tendency to bomb away in the last term resulting in 3 gls from 10 scoring shots, they managed to get home by 8 pts . Apartfrom Palmer, they were well served by Lumley, Tweddle and Humphrey whilst Tonners best were McNamara, Oliver and Hunt who kicked 4 . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division 1 - Preliminary Final The big question to be answered today is "Can Webby do it again?" A repeat of his last effort will see Bernies into the Grand Final . I'm sure the D's will have a plan to reduce his tally today but, even if they do, they still have to stop the "family" gaolkickers - the Farmers and the Chatfields . De La are a very even team and I'm sure Noel has done very thorough homework on his match
ups. I believe that Bernies will win if its dry and D's will score if its wet. The long range forecast says showers on Saturday and for that reason I'll go for the D's . Division 2 Central - Grand Fina l NOBs showed great endeavour last week to regain the upper hand when Carey looked like getting away from them . The untimely losses of Trenton and Aboueid will rob NOBs of a lot of ball getting ability and scoring power and I think will really test their depth . This will put pressure on their other main scorers Haddad, McMahon and Mattiazzi to put in their best efforts. Parade will be determined not to let NOBs get the good first 1/2 break they got 2 weeks ago and I think they have got just too much all round positional skills and depth to let this get away from them . Division 2 South - Grand Final If I could be sure of knowing that Collegians could repeat last week's 2nd half I would have no hesitation in picking them today. However, footy does not repeat itself that simply. A number of Jackers boys and coach Mark Zuker suffered the disappointment of a losing Grand Final last year (probably because I tipped them!) and I know they will be determined not to suffer again . The Lions team from last week will be strengthened by the return from the "ones of Grigg and Dulmanis whilst the Jackers will no doubt get inspiration from their great following . I would (and probably should!) get back on the Lions' wagon but I believethat lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place and I couldn't be the "kiss of death" 2 years running forthe Jackers . I just think their winning form in crucial games over the last few weeks has been too good to go against today. Jackers will just sneak in .

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundle
5 YEARS AGO - 198 8 On one of the windiest days ever experienced at Elsternwick Park, Old Xaverians defeated Old Paradians, 6.18 to 5 .5, to go on to meet Ormond in the Grand Final . O.X . won the toss and kicked to the scoring end, Old Paradians were well pleased at the first change after keeping O.X . to one goal . The second term was disastrous for Old Paradians as Rick M arks and David McKay lifted for Zavs and Paul Cu rt ain was afine loose man in defence. O.X, were in control for the rest of the game and finished full of running and with plenty of fire for the match of the season against Ormond . Dann, M eagher, Greetham (O .X .) and Canavan, McClements, Grills, (OP) were best . Umpires were Greg Hardiman and Kevin Segota . Kew, after an inaccurate 1 .10 in the first term to Therry's 3 gls straight, were far too strong and, although the margin was 11 pts (7.12 to 6.7), were never in danger. They could now meet Parkside who had established a supremacy over Kew in their last two meetings. Kalac, Griffiths, Duncan (Kew) and Quinn, Reddick, Flaherty (Therry) were under notice. Umpires were Paul Cherry and Cameron Swale . On Sunday night after the "A", Section prel . final, Peter French asked the Executive to givethe selections for "A" and "B" Premiership winners . The choices were "A", 10 Ormond, 3 Old Xaverians, "B", 8 Parkside, 5 Kew. VAFA Club Media Award went to Peter Ballantyne, Secretary of ElsternwickAFC who won a weekend on the Gold Coast for two, courtesy Ansett Airlines and VAFA Travel . Congratulations on his 100th game to goal umpire Mark Serong who had started his career in 1984 atthe early age of 16. The VAFA entertained at lunch the "greats" of '38 who represented the State at the second AAFC Carnival in Launceston in 1938. It was wonderful to welcome Ray Steele (U . Blacks) who was VAFA B&F at the Carnival, Clarrie Vontom (Collegains) (VC), Wally Taylor (Col .), Jack Coulson (E'wick), Jim Standish (Teachers' College), Doug Laver (Hampton Rovers), Howard Day (Coll .), Roy Kline (E'wick), Alby Rodda (State Savings Bank), Alex Guild (Old Scotch), Norman Batcheldor (Parkdale) . Apologies were received for Ian `Ike' Galbraith (U. Blacks) who was coach, captain, orator and Bill Ross (U. Blacks) . Two members died on active service in World War I I- Bill Newton (Old Melburnians) who won the highest award for gallantry, the Victoria Cross, in New Guinea and Pat Hoppe (Old Xaverians) . PRELIMINARY FINAL 10 YEARS AGO - 1983 University Blues annihilated Collegians with a 10 gI victory to go into the grand final against De La Salle. Old Collegians had no answer to the slick movement of the Blues small men where Yeomans, Kauffman, Jennings, Angel & Kay reigned supreme. It was a surprise for many when Kew (B) defeated the more fancied, top of the ladder, Old Paradians to
go in against Bulleen Templestowe . The 'C' Section flag wentto Caulfield Grammarians who proved vastly superior to Parkside whose poor kicking for goal did not help. Best for the winners were M . Sisson, Kanis, D. M atthews, Cooney, Fish, C. Stone . Premiership favourites Banyule did not let their supporters down proving too strong for Fawkner to take out the 'D' Section pennant. Fraumano, Attard, Legge, M cDonald, Jones & Ladd got the votes . Thomastown trounced Old Trinity to be'E' Section champions. Champion forward P. Broderick kicked 11 gis and was well supported by A. Fellows, K. Steele, D. Fellows, Lindl, Anastasian . FIT & UHSOB played a 10 .10 draw in the 'F' Section grand final. Caulfield Grammarians lined up as follows : BACKS : J . Stone, F. Briner, M . O'Loughlin . HALF BACKS : W. Watson, A. Harlock, N . Matthews . CENTRE : C . Collett, C . Stone(c), M . Sisson . HALF FORWARDS : R. Berzins, C. Cooney, A. Ponsford . FORWARDS : G . Voyage, D . Matthews, R . Sisson . RUCKS : R . Fish (v.c .), J . Kanis, S . Lauritz . INTERCHANGE : R . Langdon, J . Roseman . 15 YEARS AGO - 1978 Graeme Simpson appointed to 'F' Section grand final between Thornbu ry & Bulleen United, chalked up his 300th game - including 31 finals (8 grand finals), 1970 'A' Grade Grand Final, and 1978's Victoria vs Tasmania game. In a magnificent high-scoring game North OB came from 24 pts down at the last change to kick 9 .3 to Blues 2 .3 and go to meet Old Scotch in 'A' section Grand Final . Best were S . Maguire, Dillon (6 gls), Horan (NOB) and Dobbie, Holt, Tyquin (Blues) . Parkside (B) went down 19.14 to Old Paradians 20.15 with Howell, P. Johnston, Nanke rv is (Parkside) and S . Assetta, C . Hughes, DiPaolo (Old Paradians) stars . Premierships were won by'C' Old Xaverians (from fourth place) `D' Old Camberwell (also from fourth place 'E' BulleenlTemplestowe (finished on top) `F' Thornbu ry (also on top) J1 North Old Boys, J2 Old Haileyburians. Old Brighton's Graeme Templeton played his 250th game in 'C' Reserve Grand Final against St Kilda CBOC and it was a draw, 8.5 apiece. VAFA innovations for the season : 'two umpire" system and the introduction of the interchange rule to replace the old nineteenth and twentieth man concept. Social successes were the President's and Secretaries Annual Dinner at Chaucer's when presentations were made to retiring secretary Jack Fullarton and his wife Norma, the sympathetic listener over years to club's grievances and the B&F Vote Count at Collingwood . 20 YEARS AGO - 1973 What a thriller! St Bernard's won their way into the 'A' section Grand Final when they beat Ormond with
a goal kicked after the siren . Ormond led by 28 pts at 3 qtr time, but with the wind still blowing strongly, St Bernard's plugged away until they were only 4 pts behind with about 5 minutes to play . Ormond rallied to score a goal and it looked all over, but St Bernard's got another and then from a free kick, given only seconds before the siren, goaled to win by 3 pts . Best were G. Mahoney, Ginnivan, Burgin, K . Phelan, Schwarzenburg, King (St Bernards) and R . Camero n, Rob Curtis, 1 . Cameron (4 gls), Logan, Kozlowski, Sierakowski (Ormond) . PAarceliin held off a strong finish by State Bank to win 8.9 .57 to 7.11 .53 and ensure promotion to 'C' . Stars were Wilson, Power, Allen (Marcellin OC) and Collis, Roberts, Jeffrey (State Bank) . Monash Whites kicked victory away in'F' Section Final - 8.21 .69 to St Bedes 11 .4.70. Mentions were given to Bradbu ry, P. Ryan, Campbel (St Bedes) and Tooley, Roth, Woolf (Monash) . 25 YEARS AGO - 1968 'C' Section B&F was Richard Mannix (Footscray Tech) with 22 pts from L . Smith (Hampton Rovers) runner-up with 21 pts . Caulfield Grammarians were too strong for Uni Blues 16 .11 to 13.15 and gained the chance to have another 'go' at Old Paradians. Atchison was again Caulfield's star, well supported by J . & P. Hore, and G. Tootell, Sykes, Stewa rt , Collett were best for Blues . UHSOB's inaccuracy, 4.13 cost them victory against Monash's 7.9 . Best Wettenhall, McM aster, Rattray, (M . Blues) and Smith, Joslin, McCartney (UHSOB) . FITOB won the 'C' Section premiership 11,8 to St Bernards 7.9 . 35 YEARS AGO - 195 8 Old Scotch knocked Old Xaverians out of finals when a great second half enabled them to win by 5 g!s and earn the right to play Collegians in 'A' section Grand Final . Old Paradians were fai too good for Common-
wealth Bank in'B' and would meet U. Blacks in Grand Final . U . Reds run of narrow finals losses continued when ANZ beat them by 4 pts . Hampton Scouts in Junior section second semi caused a major upset when they beat leaders Alphington, who had lost only one game previously and that by a narrow margin . University then defeated Alphington in Prelim . Final and lined up against Hampton Scouts in the Grand Final . 45 YEARS AGO - 1948 U . Blacks were outplayed by Old Melburnians in the second half to lose the final by 17 pts . Blacks had the right of challenge and the two teams would play off again in the Grand Final at St Kevins Oval . One of the boundary umpiresforthe day was a chap named Fred Coldrey ! Teams for the day were: Old Melburnians Bks : R . Corrie-Smith, K . Rollason, P. Kin g H . B . P. Grimwade, E . Cordner, E . MacGregor Cent . P. Schwarz, J . Grainger, D. Dawso n H . F. J . COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by Brian Woodhead SPORTSCOVER
THE KIDS ARE THE KEY . . but teach them how to play. by John Simpson Retired Coach . There is a degree of irony I suppose in presenting this material after having coached in two losing finals recently. However out of the ashes for the Ivanhoe club comes the knowledge that a successful junior program started some years ago has begun to bear fruit . In 1991 Ivanhoe Junior Football Club won the Under 17 premiership in the DDVFL under the guidance of coach Rob Pearce. In 1992 these players progressed to the club's amateur based under 19s and participated inthefinals . This year 14 players eligible for the under 19s have played at senior level during the year . During the finals 6 played in the senior side and nearly half the team were in fact under 20 years of age . Whilst not achieving either successful promotion or a Premiership this year the experience gained by these young players in the finals along with the experience gained at Senior level throughout the year should lead to future success for the club. It is worth noting that Rob Pearce has guided these young men along this path producing mature, consistent and an experienced level of coaching throughout . His philosophy relates directly to the senior mission and he sees his role as providing young footballers for the senior club. With the game today relying on so much pace and agility these young men are an essential ingredient of successful teams . We do not haveto lookfor examples of the importance of successful Under 19 teams. Old Camberwell, premiers last year at Under 19 level have recently won a Senior Premiership. Furthermore, is it merely coincidental that both Mazenod and Ajax, this years C Grade Grand finalists, have had considerable success in recent years with their Under 19 programs ? Both De La Salle and Old Xaverians have had Under 19 teams that have consistently set the standard for other teams - their senior teams as finalists in A Grade this year have obviously benefitted. Further evidence is easily found in the record books to confirm my hypothesis . Conversely those teams without well run under 19's have suffered . Banyule without an U rider 19's for some years have not enjoyed the same success as they had during the early and mid 80's when their Under 19 program produced some fine players . To the club's credit they are now investing a great deal of time and effort in ensuring their future by re-building an under 19team . It is worth noting that the highly respected Amateur player and coach Rick Brockwell coached a Banyule Under 17 team to a DDJFL premiership a fortnight ago .
The club hopes to field an Under 19 team in the Amateurs to be coached by Brockwell in 1993 - a significant investment in their future. It will be interesting to note the influence that the players will have on the success of the senior club in future. The message is clear ; a successful Under 19 program has positive implications for a Senior teams on field success ; but it is not as simple as just organising a team and letting them loose . Closer analysis demonstrates another interesting factor - i .e. the influence of coaches. The influence of Brockwell and Pearce cannot be denied . Steve Carrol who coached University Blues . Under 19's this year provided the direction that enabled the team win the VAFA's discipline award and again provides evidence of the importance of effective coaches at Junior level . All 3 are teachers of the game. They aim to teach young players how to play. I have in recent years spoken to many senior coaches who are confronted with young players who have had little instruction from coaches, who had never been exposed to coaches who taught a system of play and a set of fundamentals . Effective coaches issue such instruction continually . Initially the system and adopted fundamentals may be shared with all players by distributing a prepared document pre-season and analysing the messages held within carefully. Such data can be supported throughout the year by video and other resources such as newspaper articles. Training sessions conducted are organised to model the system and fundamentals therefore required behaviours are re-enforced constantly . Regular meetings and white board sessions with individuals small groups and teams also add to the teaching process . I am not just referring to teaching players what to do when they have the ball - I think most coaches do this quite well ; but what about what happens when they haven't got the ball . There is little doubt that teaching should focus on giving players insight into where they should go to get the ball and How to find the contest . Then there are issues such as blocking, manning up etc . It should be a main responsibility of Under 19 Coaches to teach in a way that will see their pupils play at senior level . The bottom line is that these players need and often demand the appropriate inputtoteach them the game. We should never assume that these young men know how to play - we need to teach them .

This award not only recognises the most successful club of the year, but it also rewards clubs who go to the trou ble of fielding an Under 19 team . With the 1994 philosophy being applied to Club XVIII teams - they must be the "third" senior team of an existing club or a new club to the VAFA or an existing club moving to the Club XVIII scene for the purposes of regrouping - points may well be awarded for Club XVIII next year. Scoring system : 3 points for each win by a club's senior team 2 points for each win by a club's reserve team *1 point for each win by a club's U19 tea m `each bye and forfeit counted as a win for opposition team . St Leo's Wattle Park's win exemplifies the value of an Under 19 side - this year was the first year the club fielded an Under 19 team . Had it not Mazenod would have "snatched" another victory.

UMPIRES CORNER by Mike Murray and Steve McCarth y • Welcome to the penultimate column for the season . For those among the illiterate, `pen' means 'Coop', 'enclosure' and'cage' while `ultimate' denotes 'extreme', 'utmost' and 'decisive.' In other words, this is the second last time you'll cop this diatribe for 1993! • Memo Richie Simon : Bernie Hoare's first decision last weekend at Lakeside was definitely a ' behind' and not 'out of bounds on the full' as you so eloquently implied . • Speaking of Bernie - he strongly denies that he won't personally be sponsored by'Toohey's Blue' in 1994. • For those into 'Family Trees' : Boundary rider, Natalie Walker is in no way related to Tram driver, Ken Walker. Well, somebody had to let Ken know! • Liked the sight of Advisor/Obse rver, 'Rusty' Francis perched high on a concrete pylon in his Di re ctor's chair during the Jackas/Hoes clash last Saturday. Cecil B. De Mille would have been proud of you . o Congratulations to all the VAFA B&F recipients named at the Radisson last Monday . The Umps fraternity await your cheques in the mail . • With 'Jurassic Park' all the rage around the nation at the moment, let's pay homage to the 'Dinosaur brigade' (40 plus) amongst the current membership :Backs: G . Ridd, P. Rapke, J . Velleman ; %2 Backs: D. Ashton, E . Keating, S . Kahn ; Centres: P Maebus, A. Bishop, L . Wilson ; %2 Forwards : S. Clinch, M . Murray, B . Hoare ; Forwards: W. Henry, P.
