FOOTBALL'S BACK FOLLOWING AN OFF SEASON OF DECISION S veryone knows and agrees that football matches on the field require sound decisions to be made y the second which impact greatly on a scoring arust, maybe the result of a game and make all the ifference between ordinary players and excellent layers . Not only will sound decision making be essential n the field this year to determine our best teams, )ut a lot of decision making has been put to use over iie off-season also which has shaped the way VAFA )otball will take itself through 1996 and beyond . Perhaps the greatest decision that required the reatest amount of discussion and deliberation was he decision to put the South Australian Amateur ootball League on notice that we did not agree with ~s Executive's decision to split its teams into two - a >rofessional and an amateur division under the one :dministrative banner . Not that we cringe from playng known professional bodies in representative i~atches . We have done that for years by playing the Iictorian Country Football League, the Victorian ,ootball Association and many professional interstate ootball leagues and associations when games have )een able to be organised . This matter however goes a little deeper . For years he suspicion has been that the SAAFL has known liat professionalism has been rather rife in SA and hat the governing body has done little to expose it . tVhat we are saying is that, with an AAFC Carnival >oming up in 1997, SA must "go all the way" in 1996 ,.nd ensure that its amateur governing body adminisers an amateur competition only, so that at the next _ arnival SA, Western Australia, Tasmania and the ~rAFA are proudly playing for the title of Australian 1.mateur football champions . Our refusal to play South Australia has not only ost us a representative match against SA this year, «ut it has also cost us the opportunity of securing a representative match of any description for 1996 as the lateness of this decision has seen all other footIaall bodies already booked for games for the coming
year . What our decision has done without question, is to force South Australia' s hand so that the Amateur Football movement will be cleansed or alternatively we will know the status of all the available opposition and we will be able to organise our representative football program accordingly . My tip?? I see no Carnival next year . I see a three year cycle perhaps being put into place, something along the lines of - v. Vic . Country Football League 1997 ; v. Vic . Metropolitan Football League 1998 ; v. Western Australian Amateur Football League 1999 then with the cycle being repeated on a home and away basis . Whilst on decisions . Some others, just briefly . • Brian Woodhead decided over the off-season to leave us. Good luck Brian . We decided in the resultant restructure to promote Brett Connell and Sue Anderson and name them as joint Administration Officers and to appoint a new face at the front desk Amy Stanyer . • We have decided to again prohibit the use of gloves at this level of football . • We have decided to improve the on-field image of the officials that are allowed to officiate during matches, by requiring the number of officials who are allowed to enter the field of play during a game to be identifiable by wearing distinctive clothing - ignorance or abuse of which will carry extremely heavy fines . Clubs are asked to refer to the display elsewhere in today's "Amateur Footballer" for a detailed outline of what is required here . Finally best wishes today to teams, coaches, players, officials and supporters who experience amateur football Victorian style for the first time . We have an organisation of which we are extremely proud and we feel has a cosy fit in the Victorian football community . We welcome you and hope you enjoy the VAFA. To all those who are familiar faces and are back for another year, good luck . I hope that your achievements this year reflect your level of preparation and desire to succeed.

ITS THAT OLD AMATEUR FEELING A W ndering a around district cricket grounds over the summer months, it was pleasant to keep in touch with amateur people sharing their time between two traditional sports. A strong University contingent headed up by Geoff Allardice ; Dale Tapping at North Melbourne ; Matt Galbraith at Richmond and David Johnston at Melbourne. But now it's time to ditch the flannels, spit polish the boots and head for the 105th year of amateur football . Two new clubs to A Section: Old Haileybury and Mazenod . Two new coaches: Simon Meehan (Xavs) replacing Barry Richardson and Sean Ralphsmith (OMs) for Stephen Newport . Mazenod's rise to A Section has almost been inevitable since their inception in 1989. But now for their big test - in the big time . Old Haileybury, under astute coach Neville Taylor, will be keen to remove memories of their last dismal appearance in the top section . Other pressing questions. Will Blues have enough incentive in '96 after only booting 17 points in that grand final? Can Xavs set themselves new challenges without Barry Richardson, McDonald, Leoncelli and co? Will St Bemards avoid a possible downhill slide? Finally, Ormond, and their dismal finals performance last year. Is this the forerunner of a long, long, cold winter ? Good luck to all this year . Whether it's players, officials, umpires ; all will play a significant role in providing cheap entertainment among fine people in a civilised environment. How have the clubs fared over the summer months? Old Xaverians (est . 1926) - Premiers 1995 . A Section Flags 2 . A oncer - perhaps? Remember OMs and how the good judges thought they would be unstoppable in '95 . Will this fate fall upon Xavs? What's different? Highly credentialled coach Simon Meehan joins the red and blacks so that's a credit and Mike Blood after trying out at the Magpies is back . On the debit side, Andrew Leoncelli and Anthony McDonald, two of their premiership stars are at Melbourne, while veterans Paul Tuddenham and Ben Buckley are undecided about their future . Still plenty of depth with four teams in grand finals and should be a force again . University Blues (est . 1921) - Runner up 1995. A Section flags 2 ; the last in 1960 . University Cricket Club won their third district flag recently, so the co-tenants would be hoping to
emulate the same feat after their humiliation in the grand final against Xavs . The cross fertilisation between both the cricket and football clubs is reaping plenty of rewards and Grant Williams, Geoff Allardice and his troops will be desperate to make it a huge year for Melbourne University. Not too many missing at this stage and promises of fine players from the U19 premiership team of last year . With their minds right, Blues will be the team to beat this year . Ormond (est. 1932) - Third in 1995 . A Section flags 9 ; the last in 1990 . Geoff Reilley did wonders with the young team last year plus a sprinkling of older players and achieved more than expected . This year will be different for they could be without dual Woodrow Medallist, Matt McConville, trying his hand out at Sandringham and Paul Kenrick heading for the big time . Huge holes to fill, so the only district representative team will find the going tougher this year and need all of that brown and blue spirit. Old Scotch (est. 1921) - Fourth in 1995 . A Section flags 9 ; the last in 1978 . The backline which held the Cardinals together so well in 1995 has been decimated with the loss of VAFA legend Rob Fuller, Gavin Eagle and Rohan Price (Melbourne), so there has to be rebuilding on the back half. Top forward Mathew Simpson is taking his time to arrive, but much is expected of Tim Holt a rover from Preston and Old Carey star Matt Angus . Need to continue the progression forward and build on the '95 gains under coach Wayne Harmes.
De La Salle (est. 1955) - Fifth in 1995. A Section flags 6; the last in 1991 . Into the third year without a possible finals appearance and that's not a tolerable situation for a club with such a great record through the 80's and early 90's . So pressure on Mike McArthur-Allen and his dedicated band of followers out at Malvern. Big plans afoot for the new social area and changing facilities, so plenty happening off field . But the loss of talented John Tully and busy Rupert Betheras will be a gap onfield, so much reliance will be placed on the numerous up-and-coming U19s . Two or three success stories each year from those juniors is all you need . Must prove their mettle this year. Old Melburnians (est . 1920) - Sixth in 1995 . A Section flags four ; the last in 1994 . Sean Ralphsmith steps in for his debut coaching role with former Fitzroy and Swans player David Strooper as his assistant . OM's fumbled around last year in a most inglorious fashion after taking all before them in 1994 . Rick Pisarski has stepped down as President to join the VAFA Executive Committee and his replacement is former OM great Ian Cordner . But the onfield news
is the return of interstate representative Andrew Thompson after supp list duties at Footscray in '95 . Chad Susa is back and former AFL player Ben Ellinghaus is listed to play. Stability will return to the Redlegs and they will be a force in 1996 . St Bernards (est . 1963) - Seventh in 1995 . A Section flag in 1975 . Practice match form hasn't been great and movement of key players Luke Vassallo and Brad Copeland to Williamstown is not good news . The Gollant brothers are back and crucial to their performance, but young prospects in John Ferns and Cameron Gleeson are trying out in other competitions . Boom recruit, ruckman Dave Gray from the Footscray District will add much needed height . Shane Zantuck is facing his third year and wouldn't want a repetition of 1995 . Not easy times ahead for the Bernards . Collegians (est . 1892) - Eight in 1995 . A Section flags 9 ; the last in 1993 . Constantly fought battles last year to avoid relegation so the summer wouldn't have been spent sunbaking for the proud Lions . Leigh Carlson is back again to further rebuild the team into a competitive unit so much is expected from them on their new ground and facilities at the Village Green or New Harry Trott . Carl Dilena (i/state) and Aaron Harrison (o/seas) will be missed and hopes still remain for the rugged Rick Schober to saddle up again . James Bennett has recovered from his broken arm, so that might square the slate plus promising U-19s in Brock McKenzie and Dick Hartnett . Need a good start, otherwise it's rearguard action all the way. Old Haileybury (est . 1961) - Premiers B Section 1994 . A Section flags nil . Return to A Section with the wind in their sails and the B Section flag wrappe d

Wayne Phillips (o'seas), Sean Richardson and Eddie Bingham won't be measuring up again, But U19's in Brendan Lay and Danny Walden are set to make the next step later on . First year in A Section . Exciting for a club to reach A Section for the first time in such a short life span . Well organised ; excellent facilities on Springvale Rd ; big supporter base so all the preconditions are there to continue their march forward . But Andrew Pickering is at Frankston and Simon Verbeek is undecided, so much is expected of youngsters Walter Occhiuto and Tim Bilston . Rob Prosser (ex Swans) has been appointed Asst . Coach . B SECTION by Paul Luby
felcome to an other season of B grade Amateur ~L football that promises to be a another clos e fought struggle . Goodbye and good luck to Old Haileybury and Mazenod in their search for greater honours in A grade and the same to Old Mentonians and St Kilda Sth Caulfield as they prepare for the haul back to B grade . With the 2 teams from Ivanhoe coming from C section and NOBS and Trinity being relegated from A section, there is no doubt that B section for this year has a decidedly Northern suburbs look about it . Before I preview this week's first round can I wish all sides in B grade an injury and suspension free season and may the best team be holding that premiership cup aloft in September. Preview of Round 1 ,Banyule v . Old Trinity This promises to be a good game of footy with both sides looking to improve on disappointing seasons in 1995 and both will be desperate to start the season with the 4 points. The Bears blooded a lot of young players last year, such as Wilmore, Gloury, Playfiar and Keenan and all will be better players with last years experience under their belt and together with stalwarts Gilliam, Williams and O'Brien, the Bears under coach Rick Brockwell have the nucleus of a good side . After one season in A grade Old Trinity are back in B section and can no doubt tell everyone about the difference in standard between A and B . They have a new captain coach in Simon Dalrymple and he has at his disposal experienced quality players in Allibon, Rogers, Norman, Hopkins etc to work with and a whole lot more . This will be a close fought struggle but in the end the class of Trinity will show out to the tune of 18 points. Bulleen/Templestowe v . Therry Inconsistent season from the Bullants last year and no doubt coach Phil Maylin would have been stressing to his players during the pre season the importance of playing consistently each week . The Bullants will welcome back Matthews from his time in the AFL with St Kilda and Williams from Springvale but will miss their captain Driver who will miss the early part of the season with injury . Everyone at Therry was extremely disappointed with the loss to Mazenod in last year's preliminary final and will have no doubt set themselves to take the extra step this year . They have a new coach in AFL premiership player Des English and he will have to counter the losses of McKay, Baker and the Bannister brothers but with players such as Factmnre . Carter and the Goodwin brothers I
believe they will be too strong for the Bullants this week and record a victory of at least 35 points . Old Paradians v . Ivanhoe I will admit to some bias here but the boys from Bundoora (including coach Dale McCann) must be wondering about lost opportunities . Fifth position 2 years running is a huge disappointment for everyone but a strong motivation for this year . With quality players such as Brabender, Vincent, Mu lligan and Philp a final four spot is expected this year . After a few disappointing final series in C section, Ivanhoe are back in B section and no doubt determined to stay there . I saw last year's grand final and the "Hoers" will be disappointed as they had their chances but rivals Old Ivanhoe were the steadier team on the day. They have some classy players in captain Nibali, Kennedy, P. Flynn an d Bu ll en and coach Doug Gott will again be looking to them to lead the way . I have no doubt that this will be a fiery match start from the first bounce and Parade will need to be careful not to underestimate the boys from Ivanhoe . Parade to win at home by 15 points . Old Ivanhoe v . MHSOB Last year's C section premiers will find the step up to B section a different proposition but from what I have seen from last year and a practice game this year they look the goods . They have an excellent coach in Kevin McLean, the players have confidence in his game plan and they have some class up forward . I believe they have lost a few players from the premiership side but watch out for the boys from Old Ivanhoe to upset a few . I thought it was a terrific effort from the boys from Melbourne High to stay in B section last year and I believe they can look forward to more wins in 96 . New coach Peter O'Dea has unfortunately lost the Skinner brothers and the "Chief" from last year but the club has recruited well including the return of several "old boys" from Old Melburnians and DLS . This game will be the closest of the round and even though the game is at Ivanhoe I believe that Melbourne High will sneak home by 3 points . Old Brighton v . NOBS An appearance in the finals last year will wet the appetite of the boys from Brighton and who says they can't do it again with players such as Pryor, Bradley, Templeton and an injury free season from captain Perry. Always difficult to beat at home . the Tonners will have to make sure their mini buses are in good running order as they will be travelling to the other side of the Yarra every second week . It has been a -- i ...,,s +i,,,A ~i„- M n,'I'}t }t'aVP }tPPn in R ~artinn anrl
knowing the pride in this successful amateur club they will be hell bent on returning to A section immediately . Coach Tony Cahill in his second year at the helm should enjoy an easier season than last and with players such as Conti, Boyle and the return of Abrahams you can rely on North to be a very tough side to beat. This is the match of the day and I suggest it will be close all day with the experience and desperation of NOBS the difference in the end by 10 points . As is the norm this time of year I will stick my neck out and suggest that the final four after round 18 will be Trinity, Therry, NOBS and Parade .

ith Old Mentonians and St Kilda South WCaulfield returning to C section and Hampton Rovers an d Thomastown earning promotion after a successful season in D Section . Season '96 promises to be very even and very keenly contested . The OMs and the Combine will be revved up to start the season on a winning streak and set the pace. The other eight teams in C section will be more than happy to meet them and provide fierce competition. The Rovers and the Towners have both recruited well in the off-season and have many juniors coming into the senior ranks to put pressure on last season's regulars . Last season's finalists . Marcellin and Ajax, whilst disappointed with their showing towards the end of '95, will be hoping for consistent performances in the early games. The Jackers started last season in sensational style before inconsistency set in when the rain arrived . Marcellin will be setting their sights on promotion, even at this early stage . A string of injuries certainly affected the team's performances, however all clubs are aware of the need for depth and promotion of Under 19 players into senior ranks . Old Geelong and St Kevin's Old Boys should be regarded as the 'dark horses' in early markets . The OG's have a tremendous supply of young talent an d will appreciate the dry conditions early in the season . Their long kicking and high marking will again make them a dangerous proposition for all opponents . SKOBS will have high expectations with some rather sensational recruiting and the talent coming from the under 19s and the college sides . Coach, Tim Hart, will be keen to take the club to finals participation in its 50th year in Amateur Football . Again, consistency will need to be addressed, as will composure and steadiness in tight matches.
Whitefriars and St Bede's Mentone Tigers will be hoping for vastly improved performances after finishing mid-stream last year . The Friars will be looking for big efforts from the youngsters who experienced senior football last year . In addition, some of the older players will be called on to show the way . The Tigers finished off season '95 on a high and will have worked hard at recruiting in anticipation of starting the season with a win . With C Section's B & F, Adam Thompson, leading the way the Tigers might be the surprise packet in '96 . Good luck to all clubs for a very enjoyable season of football . I'm sure all clubs will join me in wishing the umpires well for a season of consistent decision making . If all players treat the umpires as they would

in white' will be at an all-time high . Round 1- Previe w The big clash at Hampton sees the Rovers taking on Ajax in what should be a great match . With celebrations still in full swing, the '95 flag will be unfurled to set the season rolling . Rovers will be pumped up before a big home crowd . Ajax cannot be taken lightly with their blending of youth and experience in the dry conditions. Have a great day Rovers . My selection . . . ROVERS by 8 points in a"beauty", SKOBS journey to take on Old Mentonians where both sides will have great expectations . The OM's hope for big things in '96 and with some impressive pre-season performances, will be full of confidence . SKOBS will rely heavily on its onballers and talent across the centre and should perform well . lily tip . . . SKOBS by a whisker in a close one .
OG's take on the Saints at Como in an interesting match . The big wide wings will suit the Saints who will need to encounter the OG's marking strength up forward. Trevor Poole will be keen to start his coaching career on a successful note but I suspect the Saints to be around 16 points up at siren time . St Bede's Mentone Tigers welcome Whitefri ars to the bayside oval where both sides will be relying on young talent to win the day. The Tigers will be a tough opponent for the Friars first up and should win the day by around 25 points . The clash at Bulleen between Marcellin and Thomastown should be a tough encounter . The Towners will journey home with a fair idea of what to expect in C section . The Big M's will be in for a shock if they take the game lightly . I'm sure Bruce Ferguson will have his experienced line up primed up for an early success . My selection - MARCELLIN by 32 points . Reserves winners should be Old Mentonians, Ajax, St Kilda Sth Caulfield, St Bede's Mentone Tigers and Marcellin. CORRESPONDENTS: by 5 .30 pm Monday please. elcome to the '96 footy season . It again promises to be a great year . Best of fortune to all players, officials and members of our clubs who this year make up D Section . Firstly, a little note about this column . As most would be aware my loyalties lie with the Southbank Football Club. This however should not deter club scribes making contact with me for exposure for their players, special notes and special occasions etc ., etc . Throughout the year I'll introduce guest tipsters and columnists along with the occasional 'dare' and 'bribe' and for a little bit of spice at times I may even get provocative . Now down to the arduous task of selecting probably winners !
Special Guest Tipster/Columnis t A young brash Tim Pritchard (a legend to be from Old Scotch, his words not mine) who just happens to work with me one day a week in between his Uni . studies, sees the season opener like this: Monash Blues just because the Boss is President of Southbank F .C . Beaumaris because of the depth in their ranks Old Camberwe ll to continue Kew's run of outs . St Johns O .C.'s too strong for Uni . Reds . Caulfield Grammar in a torrid close affair over the Parkers . Final Four (Tim's not K .B .'s ) - Monash, Southbank, Old Camberwe ll , Beaumaris. ~
Round 1 Preview St Leos v . Beaumaris - 2 of last season's premier E Section teams meeting first up . With little or no confidence I'm selecting the visitors with their wealth of depth to start the season off with a 27 point victory . What I am confident about is that St Leos with home ground advantage will take it right up to them .
Kew v . Old Camberwe ll - The 'Brown and Golds' will have needed to have supplemented their stocks with some good recruits over the summer period if they are to trouble the 'Wellers' in this encounter . Working on the theory that Old Camberwell have consolidated on their good '95 season I'll tip them to get home by 6 majors . Parkside v . Caulfield Grammarians - Can 'Grammar' travel to 'Pitcher Park' and get the spoils . Don't think so which is a real pity as my old sparing partner, Georgie Voyage, is now in charge at Caulfield. It would be great for him to win first up . However, if my mail is correct the 'Parkers' are going along quite nicely and should be able to take out the points in a close one by 3 twins. St Johns OC's v . Uni . Reds - A very big ask for the 'Redz' to travel to Doveton and expect to return winners. Whilst I'm sure they'll put up one mighty effort my hunch is that the locals will register victory by 4 snags. Monash Blues v . Southbank - Now if the good 'Professor' and his hierarchy have done their homework over the off season and recruited sufficiently then I think that with the advantage of playing at home they should be able to master the 'Bankers' and get the nod by 21 points . (Hope I'm wrong Prnfaccnrll
100 SENIOR GAMES Monash Blues congratulate Jeremy Smith on playing his 100th Senior Game against Southbank . Jeremy started with the club in 1987 and proceeded to win consecutive U19 B & F's . His determination and strength have seen him become a key member of the senior side and he has been rewarded with senior vicecaptaincy this year . Well done Smith .

MELEES - B EW AR E A melee is "Where an incident takes place involving players pushing, scragging, jumping into packs, throwing each other to the groun d or other or other similar such conduct "
Traditional football boots with stops can be quite unstable . They can make turning difficult and increase the risk of knee and ankle injuries . So an Australian footballer and scientist pulled out all the stops to give you a boot with superior comfort, greater stability and surer grip when turning .
The boot is Blades, with unique angled rubber ribs and a distinctive X-shaped heel support . Australian Design Award winners, Blades have won over the entire team at AFL side Footscray, the Victorian State Football League umpires, Socceroo captain Paul Wade and top Rugby League internationals . Also approved by the Australian Rugby Football Union, Blades offer a broader last for Australian feet, an internal EVA wedge to lessen achilles strain and 3 sole types to suit any playing surface .
So try a pair of Blades . And take the greatest step forward in football boot technology for 25 years .

E EAST SECTION by Barry Hicke y EMMMMMMMMIr-
prove too strong for Swinburne . Richmond central have relocated to the Kevin Bartlett Reserve and are anxious to road test the new Function Room which should be ready about mid season . Senior Coach, Tim Pontefract from Old Trinity, has the Centrals moving well for today's clash with Aquinas, which should be a top game for spectators . The Blooders, with one sad exception, have retained last.year's Grand Final side, and regained some former players, so they should start favourites to win this game . However, Centrals look a more settled combination than last year and will give a good account of themselves, especially with the Blooder's A Sports Night in aid of Mark's young widow tendency to start their seasons slowly . E CENTRAL SECTION by Darren Brigg s gresses . North are likely to develop into the most feared of rivals in E Central . #4: University Blacks - With six wins in D section during 1995 and an eighth place finish, the Blacks will consider themselves unlucky to be in E Central for 1996 . A revamped administration has appointed ex De La Salle assistant Coach Gary Connolly as Senior Coach for 1996 and with the majority of its players from 1995 returning, the Blacks will be very competitive. The Club is very keen to arrest the slide of recent years and will accept nothing less than a finals appearance as evidence . s Pre-Season Rating #5 : La Trobe University - This ranking will irk my Following is my predicted finishing order for seafellow La Trobe teammates, as if correct it would be . For the record, my predicted grand finalson 1996 the Club's fourth consecutive fifth place finish! The ists at this time last year were North Brunswick Club has recruited fairly well in the off-season which (runners-up) and Old Essendon (third), while I rated will ensure reappointed Coach Shayne Rule has a the eventual premiers University Reds in 5th posigreater depth of players at his disposal . The key to tion . whether La Trobe can make the next step back to #1 : Old Essendon - President Peter McKenzie finals action will be its ability to win games early in informs me that OEG has had no less than 90 playthe season and its ability to kick goals against high ers train with the Club in pre-season, prompting the quality opposition . . This Club to apply to have a Club 18 side in 1996 #6: West Brunswick - After finishing second last in quantity of players has not come at the expense of 1995, improvement can be expected from the quality as indicated in excellent practice match perMagpies in 1996 . Reappointed Coach Phil Leatham formances against Wallan and Ken Fletcher's will enjoy the return of past Best & Fairest players Australian Champion PEGS schoolboy side . Senior Jamie Gray and J . Coached by club veteran Gary Cutler, the Cougars from some of its younger players. With a few players will look to be competitive in their first season in the unavailable in the early Rounds, North are likely to he a little vulnerable ; however, as the season proVAFA. the 1996 season begins in earnest today for wha t is a relatively new look E Central, thanks to the inclusion of Williamstown CYMS, University Blacks (both down from D Grade) and Thornbury Cougars (from the now defunct Melbourne North Football League) . These sides promise to add much needed depth to the E Central ranks . Departures have been 1995 premiers University Reds to D section and Matty Ryan's Eltham Turtles who will enjoy the reduced travel offered by their place in E East where they are likely to be big improvers .
has been competitive during narrow practice match losses to EDFL sides Ascot Vale and Coburg Districts . Should not be taken too lightly . #10 : Newlands Coburg - New Coach Rick Morris has endured a slightly disappointing pre-season where training numbers have been ordinary . The prospective return of Frank Coscarella is a bonus but the pre-season absence of 1995 B & F Mich Hayes is a worry. Similar to Westbourne, it must learn to play well away from the small confined of its home ground if it is not to take out its second consecutive wooden spoon .
Preview - Round 1 At Parkville, the rejuvenated West Brunswick host UHSOB in what it hopes will be the start of a Magpie resurgence in 1996 . 1 fancy the Magpies are a little more advanced in their preparations for the 1996 season and expect them to have too many guns for Uni High. West Brunswick by four goals . At Hoppers Crossing, Old Westbourne await Newlands Coburg in a confident mood given their comprehensive thrashing of the Cobras in the corresponding clash last year . Old Westbourne should be too fit and fast for the Coburg boys and should emerge victors by a comfortable eight goals . At East Keilor, my pre-season tip for the flag Old Essendon will take on VAFA new-boys Thornbury Cougars in what could be a baptism of fire for the Cougars . Thornbury will match OEG in the physical department but I expect OEG to have the edge in fitness and general skill . Old Essendon to commence their campaign as convincing seven goal winners . . At Fearon Reserve, an interesting tussle will be fought out between Williamstown CYMS and La Trobe University . Willi have been a little more impressive during the pre-season and are always very hard to beat at home . La Trobe will push the Towners all the way, but I select Willi to prevail in a tight one by 15 points .
The Match of the Round is at Melbourne University where University Blacks will attempt a winning tribute to recently deceased past player Ted Cordner when they take on North Brunswick . Both sides have been fairly impressive in the off-season and although North may not yet be at full strength, I expect their experience and physical strength will be just enough to overcome the running game of the Blacks . North to prevail in another tight one by nine points . --elcome back one and all to the start of another W, season of entertaining football action in the ESouth Section competition . This year promises to be a much tougher . and more competitive season, with every competing side having a good chance at making the grade by reaching the finals .The promotion of Beaumaris, last year's dominant premiers, will ensure a more balanced competition . Several sides will have points to make this year, after having been left with untapped potential at the of end of last season . Perhaps the most dangerous these sides will be Peninsula Old Boys, last season's runner-up . The pirates were the only side to defeat last year's premiers Beaumaris in the home and away season . After a competitive finals campaign, Peninsula lost the grand final that was a cake-walk for Beaumaris . This year the pirates will be looking to make that one extra step . . Another side to look out for this season, will be Glenhuntly, a new-comer to the E South competition. Having been relegated from their previous competition . Glenhuntly will be keen to make the most of their new opportunity, however, little is known about this side's prospects for the season ahead.
Powerhouse who made an unprecedented turnaround of poor form early last year to reach the . finals . will be hoping to retain their competitive edge Powerhouse boast a depth of quality footballers, and look to be a dangerous side when all guns are firing . Oakleigh, similarly is a side with talented players, whose fortunes will live or die on the output it receives from its star players . It is rumoured that Oakleigh is one of many sides that have recruited strongly in the off season . It will be interesting. to see where Oakledigh will go as the season unfolds Elsternwick, who made a healthy surge towards last year's finals will need to have a more consistent season if they are to make an impression this year . Whilst the Wicks were travelling well towards the business end of last year's season, early losses proved too costly for them and they were left with a tough draw in the closing rounds . St Patricks Mentone and Salesian . are also sides that will need to deliver more this year, to break away from the middle of the ladder, where they were has picked up left at the end of last season . St Pats some exciting new recruits, and is looking fonvard to slotting them into the side where they can make valu. Poor form and injury sabotaged able contributions the Vultures finals aspirations last season, but St Pats is looking forward to making amends this year . by putting in a strong season .
Salesian was also a side upon which injury too k its toll last year . After a good first half of the season, Salesian were unable to re-group and retain their winning form . If the club can get its best side on the field for the majority of the year, there is no reason why it should not be a tough and versatile side . APtZ Bank is a side that is blessed with the ability to defeat the most talented side in the competition if they are focussed on match day . Unfortunately for the Zebras the numbef of occasions when they were at their best was limited . The Zedders need to maintain a consistent level of performance, which was found wanting last season . It is difficult to forecast the future of the two Monash sides . who languished at the bottom of the ladder last season . It is plausible that both Monash Whites and Monash Gryphons will boast several new faces in their sides this year . just how far they can travel this year depends on the calibre of the new line-up . PREVIEW Monash Gryphons will get a chance to show just how much they can achieve this year when they meet looks like being a lively contest, with ANZ Bank . This given that the Gryphons recorded their only win last s year against the Zedders . ANZ should start a
favorites, but only marginally . Powerhouse take on Monash Whites this weekend, and Powerhouse should be able to defeat last year's lowly Whites . The Whites will be keen however to shake off the 'easy beat' tag . Newcomer Glenhuntly may undergo an initiation by fire when it meets with Salesi an this weekend, but it is hard to gauge how Glenhuntly will perform with no track record to consult . Salesian may be the safer bet in this contest . Eisternwiek will definately have its work cut out for them when it plays Peninsula. The Old Boys, still licking their wounds after last years final, will be keen to impress early this year . The last match of the round sees old foes Oakleigh and St Pats lock horns . St Pats may field some new faces in their side who will b e keen to make an impressive debut . Oakleigh can expect a hard slog against the Vultures, but may escape with four points . rth a net loss of four sides the tenth season of Club XVIII football will start today with eighteen optimistic teams participating . There are numerous changes to membership with Old Ivanhoe and Old Essendon fielding sides for the first time . Bloods have merged with Old B righton, who should thus be more competitive and Collegians have made a quantum leap from North to South . Unfortunately Old Paradians, Old Trinity and Bu lleen Templestowe have put their Club XVIII sides into recess while Eley Park and Swinburne University have graduated to E East Section . Preview of Round 1
Out east Marcellin, who have gained players so Coach Bruce Ferguson tells me, journey to Hawthorn Citizens, who on 1995 form must be expected to win. Even though the Citizens were not the fittest side in 1995 I still favour them to win . Old Essendon Grammarians face a baptism of fire when they visit Therry, who were unlucky not to play in last season's finals . Over many season's Therry have proven hard to beat at home, irrespective of their position on the ladder and as a consequence I select them to win today . Traditional rivals and virtual perennial finalists, St Bernards and Kew meet at the St Bernard's "Colosseum" . My spies tell me St Bernards are short on numbers although Coach Andrew Vinnecombe, without secretarial duties, will be keen to open with a victory over New whose two point premiership victory in 1994 still annoys St Bernards. In 1995 Kew lost to St Bernards in the first semi final . Today I select St Bernards largely because they play so well at home . North Old Boys, who have had more success than have Co ll egians in previous seasons, play the transferees at the Gillon Oval. I expect NOBS to win well. Old Ivanhoe has the Bye . CLUB XV111 North & South by Norm Nugen t SOUTH The two most talented sides over many seasons Old Xaverians and Old Scotch who fought out an epic Grand Final seven months ago meet in Yarra Park . The "Crocodiles" lost only that one game last year and will again be strong especially under "super coach" shirt maker Scott Dennison . Old Scotch even though they are reigning premiers usually are slow starters to the season and as a consequence I select Old Xaverians to win today . Old Melburnians, who couldn't maintain consistency last season, are at home .to the Blood strengthened Old B righton who may take longer to settle into cohesive teamwork . At home I select Old Melburnians . The other two 1995 finalists Mazenod an d De La Salle meet on the side expanses of Central Reserve . De La Salle enjoyed a resurgence in 1995 and will provide tough opposition for M azenod who should, nevertheless, possess sufficient talent to win . Two of last season's disappointing sides St Kevins and Old Geelong meet on the Righetti Oval . Old Geelong, who are foundation members of the Club XVIII competition have never progressed far up the ladder while St Kevin's fortunes really show the ephemeral nature of many amateur clubs . I suspect St Kevin's will have enough talent to defeat the enigmatic Old Geelong . VUT have the Bye .

U19 SECTIONS by Brett Connel l
Knitwear ig welcome to all for season 1996 and what a big g season of U19 football it promises to be , with (1) new team, (3) teams returning and another (2) fielding a second U19 team the U19 group has grown to (37) competing teams , necessitating a total of (4) U19 sections for 1996 . Well done to all of the clubs fielding U19 teams in 1996, we trust that the efforts which have enabled you to get to the line see future rewards are yielded by your club . UNDER 19 SUB-COMMITTE E
The VAFA Executive realising the importance of U19 football for clubs and the VAFA has appointed an U19 sub-committee which will be directly involved with the administering of U19 football for 1996 . This came about through the retirement of Max Lyon from the VAFA Executive in December 1995 . Max's work with U19 football was second to none and the power of work which he did will in 1996 be shared by the following sub-committee : (Ralph McHenry Chairman, Steve Carroll, Brett Connell, Simon Derham, Harry Harisiou, Andrew Langford-Jones, and Phil Stevens) . With little more to go on than rumour and whispers the first round selections will be tough but here goes . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES DIVISION ONE OLD PARADIANS host AJAX at Bundoora and with Parade's numbers and their second side having the bye they will be in front at the final bell . ST . BERNARDS travel to Toorak Park to take on last years runners up OLD XAVS, with a changing of the guard at both teams I am leaning toward the home team this time . THERRY host UNI . BLUES at Glenroy and I expect Steve Carroll's boys to turn Geoff Porter's day into a gloomy one . OLD MELBURNIANS host DE LA SALLE at the Junction Oval in what will be an extremely close encounter . Mark Zuker has taken charge of the OM's and I suspect will prove to have enough fire power to roll De La today . The final match of the round sees NORTH OLD BOYS promoted from Central section last season host COLLEGIANS at Brunswick . Terry Mills' boys will open their account at the expense of Collegians today .
SELECTIONS : Old Paradians, Old Xavs, Uni . Blues, Old Melburnians & NOB S DIVISION TWO BLUE
BEAUMARIS host ST . KILDA STH . CAULFIELD at Beaumaris (maybe Sunday) and will unfurl their first U 19 VAFA flag, with this incentive they will prove too strong . MONASH BLUES host CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS at the Uni, where I believe the "old hand" Steve Rust will outpoint the "new kid" on the block
Adrian McMaster in the coaching stakes . MAZENOD take on OLD BRIGHTON at Waverley in what shapes as an extremely close encounter, given Mazenod's experience gained in Section 1 they should outpoint Old Brighton . OLD HAILEYBURY host HAMPTON ROVERS at McKinnon and both Andrew Baxter and Craig Harris are in their first terms as coaches, Billy's team performed well enough to win the U19 Lightning Premiership recently and should be able to maintain that form today . ORMOND have the bye first up. SELECTIONS : Beaumaris, Monash Blues, Mazenod, Old Haileybury DIVISION TWO RE D WHTIEFRIARS are at home to AQUINAS who performed well in the U19 Lightning Premiership recently, in a real unknown Aquinas to win narrowly . MARCELLIN at Bulleen will be a tough ask for Steve Aird's boys today, given Marcellin are still smarting from last years Grand Final loss . Marcellin to win . New team YARRA VALLEY host OLD CAREY who, if they have half of their lads available who have been training with Oakleigh Chargers (VSFL) will not make John May's day a memorable one . Old Carey . CHIRNSIDE PARK and OLD TRINITY clash for the first time, and despite both teams good form in the U19 Lightning Premiership Old Trinity will have too much goal kicking power for Chirnside Park . OLD PARADIANS (2) drew the bye .
SELECTIONS : Aquinas, Marcellin, Old Carey, Old Trinity DIVISION TWO WHITE In a clash of two extremely improved outfits WARRINGAL takes on BULLEEN-TEMPLESTOWE at Banyule in what will provide a very entertaining match. In a toss of the coin Harry's boys will just out point Brian' lads, but I will not be surprised if the result is reversed . ST. LEOS and OLD CAMBERWELL tangle with both teams being driven by two newcomers to the U19 coaching ranks in Peter O'Connor and Andrew Tsindos . Given Peter has not been in charge all that long at St . Leos I lean towards Old Camberwell to give Andrew his first taste of victory for 1996 . UNI BLACKS host OLD GEELONG at Crawford Oval and will not provide any joy for Damian Carroll today as the OG's will win well . DE LA SALLE (2) meet WILLIAMSTOWN in what promises to be a tight struggle. I wonder what tricks Gerard Barnes has got up his sleeve for some of his former DLS students . In a tight contest De La Salle by a nose . ST . KEVINS will cool their heels for another week with the bye .
SELECTIONS : Warringal, Old Camberwell, Old Geelong, De La Salle

Monday, May 6- release of second section of EP draw. For 1996 "crowd pulling" A and B section games will be scheduled, with an A or B section club not giving up more than 3 home games over seasons 1996-1997, unless an A or B section club especially requests extra home games at EP on available dates (such as' above) .
NB - De La Salle have been drawn twice at EP in the first section of the draw . This counts as one allocation only as we have been assisting DLS as their ground is not able to be used for the first few weeks of the season .
MELEES - BEWARE i
A melee is "Where an incident takes place involving players pushing, scragging, jumping into packs, throwing each other to the ground or other or other similar such conduct "
LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundl e
5 YEARS AGO - 199 1 New teams welcomed were Boronia Park, St Pats Mentone, Albanvale, Chirnside Park, St John's OC, Monash Gryphons. Five times 'A' Section premiership coach with Ormond, Mike McArthur-Allen joined the Administration as Executive Officer .
Peter Sherwin, well respected Old Scotch star and representative player on many occasions had been appointed coach of his old club . Former Collingwood and Fitzroy winger Leigh Carlson had joined Collegians as coach replacing long-time coach Bruce Ferguson who had taken over at Parkside while Ormond had appointed former premiership player Michael McCarthy . An elite section had been introduced in the Under-19 Section, with the balance of the teams divided into north and south sections . University Blues noted with regret the death in January of long-serving timekeeper Graeme Coleman who joined Blues from Caulfield Grammarians and to end of season 1990 had timekept about 800 games . VAFAUA office-bearers were Andrew Belcher ,
President; Peter Keogh, Secretary ; Stephen Hopper, Treasurer ; Richard Simon, Social Secretary; VAFA Member Kevin Segota . Ajax won the Vic Health Pre-season Under-19 Lightning Premiership . The Executive had decided to honour the memory of late George McTaggart, widely known as father of VAFA Under-19 football and the magazine "the Amateur Footballer" by leather-binding a collection of all "Amateur Footballer" magazines, calling them 'THE GEORGE McTAGGART COLLECTION," and displaying them in a prominent position on the Boardroom . 10 YEARS AGO - 198 6 President John Di ll on welcomed five new clubs, St Andrews, St Leonards OC and Whitefriars to F Section, and also to Eltham and GTV-9 to compete in G Section .
Mark Hanneberry had returned to coach North Old Boys. A Section scribe Ross Booth picked Collegians new player Rick Schober to have a big season . Young Ormond star Simon Eishold had won a place on Melbourne's list . A Section umpires to open the season were Ron Lippold, Peter Wiseman, Shane Urwin, Steve McCarthy, Colin King, Ken Coughlin, Brian Goodman, John Horwood, Brian Hayward, Dick Tracey.
John Fisher was appointed coach of the State
team to play in the Carnival in Adelaide in late June to celebrate South Australia's 150th year. Prior to the Carnival would be the fifth game in the series against VFA to be played at Elsternwick Park, the score to date standing at two all . 150 games to Ormond's fearless little rover Tony "Bones" Boyanton . Sir Bernard Call inan was the Associatiori s new Patron-in-Chief. 1985 premiers Ormond got a real hiding from Caulfield Grammarians, 15 .10 to a dreadful 6 .24 . Stone, Matthews and McClelland were stars for the 'fields' coach Greg Toote ll . 15 YEARS AGO - 198 1
Alex Johnson and John Dillon were elected president and chairman respectively . Life member Manson Russel retired from presidency after serving in that role with distinction . Despite a number of applications, no new clubs were admitted . Sherrin footballs were the only approved balls for use in senior matches . "Poaching" committee of Messrs Russel, Kearm, Hawkins and Nathan set up to try and eradicate the problem . Old Xaverians deny having approached Mr Des Tuddenham to become a playing member of their club . Executive committee were continuing to explore all possibilities of a permanent headquarters . There had been so much trouble at 1980 finals series with owners bringing their dogs along for a run (including Greg Fisher of Ormond with his Alsation) that the Treasurer suggested to the Executive that owners be charged $1 to bring their dogs into Elsternwick Park . Still, it's family football, and what's a family without a Great Dane, or a St Bernard, or a Doberman Pincer to play with the children ! There was a sensation to start the season when on the Friday night prior to the first game, an investigation which had taken place over several weeks, culminated in U. Blues being relegated from A Section to B Section for season 1981, due to an irregularity in circumstances concerning a permit application for a prominent U . Blues player. AJAX was promoted to A Section.
20 YEARS AGO - 197 6 Alf Keam, a man of many talents was the Amateur Footballer's A Section tipster for 1976, a new feature with other confident characters . "B" John Byrne, " C" Alex Johnson, " D" Jim Fidge, "E" Syd Whitfield, "F" Keith Findlay . Junior i Norm Nugent, and yes, they couldn't keep him out, Junior 2, the one and only Peter Nathan.
Alf picked Old Trinity to beat U. Blues, 1975 premier coach Gus Mitchell's St Bernard's to do Peter O'Donohue's (State Coach) U. Blacks, NOB "always trained to the minute" against Monash Blues, Coburg and Reservoir Old Boys "a thriller" lean to NOB's and Ormond, eager for a first up win for new coach Ian Cameron to defeat De La Salle "minus Peter Murnane" . You might say "Alfie needed the run" - for the record, Blue annihilated OT, Gus did the right thing with a 31 point win, NOB (L . Murray 6 goals) too good for Blues (best player - R . Booth), Coburg 110 points over NOB and poor " Cammie", De La swamped Ormond by 45 points. Only two out of five, Alf. A "sour note" to start season - a record 14 players reported for an opening round. 25 YEARS AGO - 197 1 Lou Zachariah, a devoted Amateur Footballer man for years, and a particular enthusiast of interstate and AAFC games succeeded Ernest F. Atkins as President, who together with two former secretaries, Jack McCann and Geoff Moore, was appointed "Patron of the Association" . Marcellin and North Brunswick joined the Association (Peter French, VAFA general manager for 1983 to 1989, played on the wing in Marcellin's first game and kicked one goal - NR) . Well known names among new coaches were Roger Head (Old Haileyburians), Kevin McLean (Old Ivanhoe), Paddy Walsh (St Kevin's) and John Bennett (Ivanhoe). 1970 "A" premiers, Caulfield Grammarians, trailed Co llegians by 2 goals at /, time but put on 9 .7 to 0 .4 to win easily . Best for the victors were Atchison (5), Clark and Lester and Crow, Opie, Roach (5) for Collegians.
After setting a club record by winning three successive best and fairest awards Mick Quinlan deserved the honour of appointment as captain of Old Paradians. 30 YEARS AGO - 1966 For the second time in four years the Association has been forced to vacate its central ground, the latest blow being the loss of the St Kilda Cricket Ground . The Association had used Olympic Park for five years after the 1956 Olympic Games but the introduction of a dog racing track decreased the size of the ground and it became too small for Australian Rules . The following clubs did not reappear in 1966 : RAAF, Postal Institute, Bellfield, Cassle (this was a club based on a Greek brotherhood and whose equivalent in South Australia were Al Premiers in the SAAFL in 1985), Monash Whites and Kooyong. 35 YEARS AGO - 196 1 Ian Cleland (in the 70's and 80's an "authority on ABC on lawn bowls, trotting and football and anything else he decides he knows a bit about) was appointed VAFA umpires' advisor . Rumour has it that Ian got reappointed each year because he sang so well at the Association's Annual Dinner - those smashing Top 40's numbers, "A Man Called Peter", and "The Place Where I Worship" . He usually told a couple of jokes of unusual quality before he sang .
Other notable events were that Mr Geoff Moore of Collegians AFC was awarded life membership, and Old Geelong Grammarians, desperate after finishing last in "B" Section, turned to former coach and star Noel Rundle to revitalise them in "C : section as well as be club president!

UMPIRES CORNER by Steve McCarthy and Anthony Damen
® Were back! After throwing open the opportunity for other would-be journalists to take over the role of scribes for the 1996 season - the offers to take on the role didn't actually flood in . To be precise, no one put their hand up for the job so you will have to put up with out subtle and sometimes not so subtle umpires corner . There will be a new set of guidelines for us to follow this season which include : 1 . No number crunching . 2. No comments on appointments . 3 . Censorship - when necessary . 4 . Break the above rules - when possible . ® Pre-season training is over, practice matches are behind us and today, all the blood, sweat and tears are brought to fruition in Round 1 . Best wishes are extended to all clubs promoted this year, to clubs unfurling their premiership flags and to those umpires officiating in their first match today . We are sure the nerves will be on edge but enjoy the day . It is the matches that make all those lonely training runs, the 800's, 400's, etc . worthwhile . Ammo footy, it's great to have you back . ® This is the perfect opportunity to introduce you all to the men who decide who will be umpiring in which section and at which game : Brian "Bomber" Bulluss - Umpire Advisor Ron Lippold - Assistant Umpire Advisor Skills Russell Francis - Assistant Umpire Adviso r - Observers Paul Young - Fitness Advisor Gary Baumgarten - Goal Umpire Advisor ® The office bearers of the VAFAUA for the season 1996 Richard Simon - Presiden t Vice President Wayne Hinton Secretary Col Segot a Treasurer Michael Lentini
Peter Harris - Assistant Secretary John Kelly - Assistant Treasurer Geoff Curran - Social Secretary Rachel Miller - Membe r Geoff Ridd - Property Steward Kevin Segota - Delegat e For a successful year, let's all get behind these hard working individuals and support them in any way possible . ® To date the VAFAUA has held 2 meetings with the following highlights: - No White Wacker Awards because Rachel Miller has not returned the trophy . She is missed . - Woody Award - Wayne "Chuck" Hinton for carting water bottles, sweeping out the rooms, bricklaying, getting Sue pregnant, etc . - Tim Tingiri replaced as Social Secretary due to injury . - Presentation of the 1995 Annual Report (seems to have made " Belly" & "Jacko" very happy regarding their Grand Final appointments) . - Raffle Winners - Michael Lentini - slab of VB ; Andrew Chapman - slab of meat : Leo Wilson (again) - Hat; Kevin Segota - Towel . - Aquathon Shield - 1st : Matthew McCrohan 2nd: Ben Schmidt - Golf Day -April 21 . Royal Camberwell ® BUILDING UPDATE For all those who have visited Elsternwick Park you would have seen the transformation of the old stand with the new building situated at the back of the stand . Many, many hours of planning and preparation, a great deal of patience and persistence see our own umpire rooms nearing completion. "Youngy" has noted that "Chuck" has spent enough time on his "Meccano" set but WE would like to think it has been time (and first match payments) well spent .

Congratulations and best wishes to you all.
® In support of a new sponsor to the VAFA, Blades Managing Director Peter Warner presented his company's revolutionary footwear suitable for umpires at a recent meeting . Peter was supported by Tim Shearer VSFL umpire (ex VAFA umpire) who modelled the Blades gear. Peter offered a donation to our building fund if sufficient orders are placed and even conned Phil Stevens to pitch in. Wrong place at the wrong time Phil? ® One chapter ended and another door opened for Brian "Benny" Goodman in the off season . After 25
years involved in umpiring Benny has taken up a position with De La Salle . Good luck in your new role . ® All members of the VAFAUA wish Brian "Woody" Woodhead all the very best in his new pursuits. Woody held the positions of Director of Umpiring then Administration Officer and has been a terrific support to us all . ® Why was "Chuck" nicknamed "Two Boots" on the end of season trip away ? ® Why was Memo 1 printed on blue paper? Was "Bomber" showing his true political colours ? ® Please assist us in making Umpires Corner as informative and entertaining as you can by providing us with snippets to include . IS YOUR COACHING ACCREDITATION CURREN T 1996 Updating Policy - Ausralian Football ustralian Football, as part of the Australian A Coaching Council Accreditation Scheme has been developing an Updating Policy which has the intention of maintaining a coach's status as an Accredited Coach with the ACC . Basically, Updating is a policy that requires coaches to complete a variety of activities over a four year period . When a coach receives an ACC accreditation card after completing a course the "update clock" starts . This is indicated by the expiry date shown on the card . Coaches complete updating points to remain an accredited coach (ie . on the NCAS Database) . Terminology As from the l/1/96 all coaches will either be : 1) Current (ie . currently accredited in a specific sport) a) New coaches (ie . have not yet completed an update cycle) b) Upgrade coaches (ie . have upgraded from Level 1 to 2 ) c) Re-accredited coaches (ie . have completed an updating cycle and completed the updating requirements of their sport) 2) Non - Current (ie. coaches who have been accredited in specific sport at some stage and whose accredI itation is no longer current)including: a) non - updated or "expired" coaches (ie . have completed an updating cycle, but failed to meet the updating requirements of their sport ) b) discontinued coaches (ie . at the sports request, eg . retirements etc . ) c) deceased What happens if I don't update ? Coaches who do not complete the Updating requirements as specified by their National Sporting Organisation (AFF) will be removed from the NCAS active - coach register (ie . considered not accredited) . Australian Footba ll requirement s Level l Coaches The onus is on Level One coaches to maintain their accreditation and to keep records in a log book . They are encouraged to update . During the four year period Level One coaches will be required to accumulate a minimum of 220 points .
A simple rule of thumb would show that this could be achieved each year by (i) being a member of AFCA, (ii) actively coaching a team and (iii) attendance one re-accreditation seminar per year . Level 2 & 3 Coache s Their requirements are along the same lines as Level one however they have a higher involvement . During the four year period Level 2 and 3 coache s will be required to accumulate a minimum 300 points . How to gain points 1 . Practical Coaching (active coaching ie . Club/ School competition) 4 year period 100 points 3 years of 4 year period 70 points 2 years of 4 year period 50 points 1 year of 4 year period 20 points 2. Attendance at Seminars (for each 1 .5 hour session 15 points to a max . 150 points ) - seminars, lectures, workshops conducted by AFCA - approved courses conducted by professional bodies (ASMF certificate, ACHPER, First Aid, Umpire Courses etc. ) 3 . Coach Education (for each activity, 20 points to a max. 160) lecturing or presenting at a coaching course conducting coaching clinic s publishing articles (Coaching Update, Coaches Clipboard etc. ) 4 . Membership of Australian Football Coaches Association (AFCA/ VAFA) (15 points per year - max . 60) - Executive member (State or Regional) 30 points each year max . 12 0 How are the Update Activities recorded ? The ACC supplies newly accredited coaches with a log book to record all update activities . Coaches have been encouraged to take their log books to all possible Updating activities. If you do not have a log book then it may be obtained from the ACC, P 0 Box 176 , Belconnen ACT (ph . 06 252 1550) at a cost of 50 cents plus postage . Log Books
Are to be submitted to the regional branch of AFCA (ie . AFCA/VAFA) within one month of expiry together with a S10 registration fee . Throughout the course of this year AFCA/VAFA will once again provide re-accreditation seminars for all AFCA/VAFA members . As a VAFA coach you are
automatically a member of AFCA/VAFA, and with you currently coaching the only requirement that needs to be addressed for updating is attend an ce at, at least one re-accreditation seminar during 1996 . If these requirements are met then updating w il l take care of itself if you are a Level One accredited coach . The requirements of Level Two and Three coaches are a little more involved but are clearly out lined previously.
T6warm welcome to all VAFA players, supporters, coaches, administrators and anyone just interested in our great game . Well we are here again, the preseason is finished with, and the first official matches of the season kick off this weekend. In what promises to be another fabulous year of VAFA football a number of happenings over the summer months gives us something to report to you in this the first edition of the year . It would not be a new season in the VAFA without a few changes and these have happened thick and fast . Firstly Brian Woodhead has left the VAFA Administration to join one of our sponsors Sportscover . With Brian's departure comes the appointment of Amy Stanyer as office assistant / receptionist . We would like to take this opportunity to thank Brian for his (2) years work with us and wish him well at his new post, and also congratulate Amy on her position and wish her well in her role with the VAFA.
#### #
While talking about changes we would like to welcome Rick Pisarski and Bruce McTaggart to the VAFA Executive . Both men bring with them a wealth of football knowledge and know-how, and will no doubt add to the already dearth of football knowledge of our Executive . Departures at the December 1995 AGM were VAFA Life Members Max Lyon and John Miles, both of these men's services to the VAFA is immeasurable and for this we thank them both sincerely .
For those of you who are Non-Current coaches or believe that you may fall into this category (see previous), you are asked to contact myself to discuss this matter further.
As a new season comes around so to do the new scribes and we would like to welcome on board for 1996 Paul Luby (B Section), Terry Quirk (C Section), Ken Bremner (D Section) and Brett Connell (U19) . With these additions we see the departure of David Holland (B Section), Peter Lemon (C Section) , Tom Brain (D Section) and Max Lyon (U19) . To all of these scribes thank you very much for your time and effort over the years . We trust that your lay off is restful and that your interest never wanes from your particular section . Thank you once again. # # # # #
A quick note to all concerned about the health of VAFA Treasurer Noel Rundle . Noel had a successful heart by-pass operation recently and is recovering, as would be expected at a steady pace . He is back and full of beans and ready to face another year behind the purse of the VAFA . Thank you to all of you who enquired about his health recently . In late March the VAFA ran its annual U19 Lightning Premiership for new teams to be included in the 1996 U19 draw . New teams were Aquinas, De La Salle (2), Old Haileybury, Old Paradians (2), Old Trinity, and Yarra Valley, with 1995 teams St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield and Chimside Park also competing on the day . Old Haileybury were the eventual winners of the T . M . Lyon Cup and congratulations is extended to them . Also well wishes to all new teams for 1996 may this be the beginning of a successful junior development program for your club.

71 LEVEL ONE SPONSOR
McDonald's Elsternwick have entered into a sponsorship arrangement with the VAFA for the 1996 season. Obviously because McDonald's-Elsternwick is situated so close to the ground McDonald's see a great opportunity of capturing some of the VAFA football public on the way to the football or on the way home from the football and the agreement has been framed accordingly. Every player has been issued with a McDonald'sElsternwick player's card which will gain for the player free admission to any Elstemwick Park match for the entire season. The production of the card at the McDonald's-Elsternwick store will also gain for the player a free regular sized drink upon the production of the player card when purchasing food at the McDonald's-Elsternwick store. For each Quit Elsternwick Park match of the day a Goal of the Day will be selected with the winner receiving a t-shirt courtesy of McDonald'sElstemwick . The winner's name will be flashed onto the scoreboard as the players leave the ground at the conclusion of each match played . One such goal will be adjudged the Goal of the Year at the end of the season and this player will be recognised appropriately at the Vote Count Night at the end of the year .
Each issue of the "Amateur Footballer" will also feature a McDonald's-Eisternwick trivia quiz question which must be answered by a caller leaving an answer on the VAFA answering machine on Saturday night after 8pm . The 5th correct caner will receive the weekly prize which will be appropriate to the age of the winner . This prize will be posted to the winner, courtesy of the VAFA. A column will appear each week in the "Amateur Footballer" which will show the previous week's winners of the Goals of the Day and the winner of the Trivia Quiz, as well as presenting the new trivia quiz question .
THIS WEEK'S TRIVIA QUIZ QUESTION : "THE NEW Nic ONA D'SELSTERNWICK SIGN INDICATES (rather inaccurately I suspect) HOW FAR FROM ELSTERNWICK PARK IT IS TO McDONALD'SELSTERNWICK . HOW FAR DOES THE SIGN SAY?" Remember to have a ch ance you must phone the VAFA on 9531 8333 after 8pm on a Saturday night .

lubs are reminded that teamiists will not appear in the Amateur Footballer until Round (3) April 27. Clubs have been asked to submit their teamlists for Seniors, and U19 and Club XVIII (if applicable) . The deadline for these lists was Wednesday April 10. All clubs not listed in the Amateur Footballer in Round (3) will be fined accordingly . It is also worth noting that until teamlists appear the requirement is that at the toss of the coin the two captains must exchange a list showing all (21) players and their jumper number . This applies to Senior and Under 19 matches only, although as a courtesy it could also apply to all VAFA matches. After teamlists appear on a regular basis exchanges only need to occur if there is any variation from published teamlists, ie. senior (21) players and their jumper number . This season, with the support of a number of VAFA sponsors Phil Stevens will be heard on Southern FM (88 .3 ) giving a brief "around the grounds" of half time scores . To get your game on the air you must ring Phil on his mobile phone ( 015 773900) between 10 to 3 and 5 to 3 and he will do his best to get your half time score on the air .
Each A and B section home game secretary (or appointed press correspondent) must again phone VAFA Administration before 5 .30 with the quarter by quarter scores : goalkickers and best players from that particular game played . These details do not have to be resubmitted on a Monday morning . Could all HOME clubs please read carefully the PRESS CORRESPONDENTS' NOTICE which appears in today's "Amateur Footballer" which details accurately the requirements of all home clubs each match day of the home and away season. Oh, and yes, for those who don't meet the deadlines or provide exactly what is required the BLACK LIST will return (when required) . ** .a* As in the past this column will bring to your notice the more serious items that need to be brought to the notice of clubs, supporters and club members . So look each week for the characteristic FROM THE VAFA logo for all the information to bring you up to date .
Playing coaches once again have to attend Elsternwick Park along with the club President and Secretary to swear affidavits declaring the strict amateur status of the club's playing coach. The only clubs that have attended to this matter are the following clubs - David Rogers (Mon . Blues) : Mark Sedgwick (UHSOB) ; Gary Ryan (Thombury Cougars) ; Glenn Cormick (Mon . Whites) ; Gary Ryan (Mon . Gryphons) ; Joe D'Angelo (Bulleen Cobras) and Simon Dalrymple (Old Trinity) . Any other club who fields a playing coach this weekend (senior team only) is playing an ineligible player. Please note - the clubs listed above are the only clubs who are eligible to field a playing coach.
