POUND ONE REPORT C r-Nllowing the extremely busy lead up to round on e J it was with a little nervousness that I awoke on Saturday morning to face the first weekend of Amateur football . With so many new procedures in place and the expectation that clubs would assume the roles that they undertook last season I was hoping for the least number of problems as possible . As soon as I heard the rain tumbling down on each day of the weekend and saw the huge pool at Elsterncvick Park I relaxed a little because I realised that all was appearing to be as normal and that FOOTY WAS BACK! !

As an "ex-chalkie", and it being school holidays I thought it appropriate to give a report card as I saw it on various matters from the first weekend of football . 1 . Permit enquiries . Arguably the busiest week of the season for the Permit Committee is the week leading up to the first game and last week was no exception . Many clubs failed this test by contacting the registration secretary to find out if permits were through . Information sought must be given in writing to Administration and will be responded to in the quickest possible time . Again no phoning the registration secretary. One suspects that more than one person makes contact from the one club seeking information about permits . Clubs must establish who is the contact person at the club and work through this ONE person only! For week one, this subject earned 3 out of 10 for overall performance . 2 . Star students. Wayne Hinton from the Umpire Association and new part-time groundsman at Elstemwick Park Michael Hall, both receive marks of 10 out of 10 for their performances. Wayne "Chuck", organised against extreme odds to have the electronic scoreboard and siren fully operational in the new umpires' building, which replaces the old grandstand . Michael, worked extremely hard to remove excess water from the ground before both days play, so that the ground was in good playing order .

3 . Quit Club Info-Line . Unfortunately the two major providers Telstra and Optus are squabbling at the moment and our service was impeded last Saturday night. I have been assured that this will be sorted out before next weekend and total access should be avail-

able from round 2 onwards . Nevertheless, our workload a t Elsternwick Park was hindered, as was Nancy McTaggart's(scores receiver) by people (some who ce rt ainly should know better) calling to find out scores of matches. This will not be given out and people are asked not to ring either Administration or Nancy as we both have press deadlines to meet. Information can only appear in papers if we are able to meet these very strict deadlines. So please only the club people who have been given the task of phoning through scores and match details to phone . A major disappointment from round one - a mark out of 10 of 2 !

4 . New outfits for runners, water carriers and trainers . Feedback tells that most officials wore the required tops, although a number offended and continued to do their own thing. These clubs, under the new requirements will be automatically fined heavily and will be informed so by letter . Many of these officials let themselves down by wearing very untidy shorts and even other clothing under their tops. The official Executive ruling is that an appropriate fine will be imposed for breaches of this requirement obviously we want to make it more economical for clubs to purchase the required gear rather than incurring the fines week by week by week . At last Monday night's Executive meeting in fact, the Executive has made a definite statement about this issue - please refer to the display elsewhere in today's "Amateur Footballer" for this statement and a special offer for purchase of clothing. For round one overall a mark of 5 out of 10. 5 .Exchange of teamlists . A number of club captains did not exchange teamlists at the toss of the coin . Most disappointing as this requirement is now into its second year. Clubs and umpires are expected to report breaches of this requirement to the Association, where heavy fines again will be imposed . The mark received for last weekend - 6 out of 10 . 6 . Picking up of "Amateur Footballers" . Clubs adapted fairly well to the three new pick-up points for the "Amateur Footballers" . Many clubs who failed to nominate a pick-up popint other than Elsternwick Park by the required deadline (April 1st) will not hav e Continued on Page 1 0

ST BERNARDS AND CLD SCOTCH ,~PEAIME SUIU SE M .NS ~"he rumour mill ground endlessly on over the summer months predicting that Old Scotch and St Bernards would be but shadows of their former selves. Well early days indicate that judgement maybe wrong . The Cardinals tipped out last year's runnerup University Blues in a second half blitz and the Bernards had no trouble accounting for a lack lustre De La Salle at Elsternwick Park . Struggled to win a match east of Buckley Street last year, so a fine start for St Bernards and Scotch's win in some way makes up for their dismal finals exist in 1995. New sides made a decent fist of their debut in the top section . Old Haileybury stormed all over Ormond to almost double their score, while Mazenod matched it with Collegians after half time, to go down by only 12 points . The Lions would be much relieved to have that first one nailed down ; it wasn't until Round five last year that they tasted victory. Two sides at Elsternwick Park on Sunday, Old Melburnians and Old Xaverians put on more than a sideshow to realise both will be a force this year . In front of a big crowd in a tough, vigorous contest, OM's revealed new faces and some shades of 1994 . Old Xavs had players out everywhere, but fought it out like all last year's premiers should . Well we are off and running and now for the next four or five crucial weeks to build on the practice match form and the early victories to push up into the top half or struggle, grind and push for those four points to keep out of the bottom half . REVIEW OLD SCOTCH V UNIVERSITY BLUE S

The old Uni favourites were there in Worsley, Furphy, Lennon and co . Gil McLachlan was leaping as high as ever and Cavalier, Henderson and Polkinghorne were driving the ball forward as the Blues edged into control from about the 14 min mark of the second quarter . In the swirling winds off Camberwell Rd, the Cardinals mosquito fleet took over in the second half. The absence of Fuller, Reddish and Eagle from the backline has propelled the Pritchards, Reids and Pattersons to take another step forward and they did it with desperation and conviction. Newcomers, Matt Angus and Tim Holt were energetic onball with big Duncan McCall causing more than a nuisance value up forward, Old Scotch recorded a fine 11 point win : a far cry from the 59 point drubbing by Blues in the fist semi final last year . 2

OLD MELBURINANS V OLD XAVERIANS With 11 player s

out of last years side that tasted grand final success, Old Xavs were always going to find it tough against Old Melburnians who need to restore some pride after their dismal year. Xavs supporters were not let down as Mike Blood and Simon Wood fought so hard to springheel them back into the match after being almost six goals down after half time. Plenty of physical clashes as both sides fought for ascendancy, but OM's steadied and ran the ball well to finish 29 points up at the finish . New faces in the tough Ben Ellinghaus and beanpole Nick Seritas, plus Peter O'Brien and Chris Bryant back to relive '94, while captain Richard Webb and a stronger looking Andrew Thompson were fine players . Without Bromell, McMullen, Witts and Kennedy, the Redlegs are on the march already. Adam Jones at centre half forward impressed for Xavs while Dan Richardson worked hard for his five goals . DE LA SALLE V ST BERNARD S

De La Salle let St Bernards off the hook after holding them until the 20 min mark of the first quarter in awkward conditions at Elsternwick Park on Saturday. Bernards then rattled on five goals to head them up . De La were only a point down at the major break, but it was in the last quarter that the energy of the Gollants brothers placed a seal on the match . Against the breeze they scored five straight to the oppositions three and a well earned victory . Apart from the Gollants, Anthony Comito did well as did former U19's Sam Taylor and Troy Backhouse . So a heartening start for Mick Perrett and the troops from Buckley Street and returned smiles after that close defeat at Malvern last year . For De La Salle, Mark Abrahrams roving and Andy Waters up back were fine players . COLLEGIANS V MAZENO D Tony Paatsch, coach of the new entrant to A Section, Mazenod, was disappointed with the loss to Collegians, only because they had positioned themselves for a last quarter push with the scoring end, but saw it whittled away by the experience of Collegians . First game in the top league and a 12 point loss ain't a bad debut . He was pleased with Mark Murray on the backline, former Marcellin player Stephen Boysen and Dave Murray onball . The Lions lost James Bennett early and had to rely on the experience of Chris Pollock and Matt Galbraith to hold back the Nodders . Promising debuts by U19 best and fairest winner Andrew Smith and Yori Phillips.

OLD HAILEYBURY AND ORMON D

The Bloods scented victory after half time and careered away from Ormond to record an easy win by 50 points to bring a smile to the former No 33 from Fitzroy, coach Neville Taylor. Nick Morey was easily best on the ground, but Taylor found difficulty after that . He believes there is some improvement yet . No size for the Monds without Matt McConvill, Nick Sebo, Paul Kenrick and Paul McDonald, a late withdrawal, so it was a real battle with Andrew Jobling as good as any, providing one of his committed, determined performances . Digging deeper into their U19's saw Marty and Simon Wrodarczyk plus Leigh Livingston and Andrew Forrest entering senior level footy. PREVIEW Bit difficult to predict early form, Old Xaverians v Old Scotch should hold a lot of interest at Toorak Park . Although comfortably beaten in the finish last week, Xavs should have enough energy and strength around the ball to win by 21 points. University Blues

will bounce back and use De La Salle as a springboard to confirm an early presence as a top side . A margin of 33 points could be expected . Two winners from last week, Collegians and St Bernards meet out at Essendon with the Lions to show much more early improvement to win a close one by 1I points . Old Melburians will make two in a row by comfortably defeating an under-manned Ormond by 27 points at Ormond, while in the last match, Mazenod and Old Haileybury, the B Section grand finalists will meet again under different circumstances, but the result the same, a victory to Old Haileybury by 21 points . B SECTION by Paul Lub y c was certainly a wet start for the season opener ''I but no great surprises from the results . All game s were close with most not being decided until the last quarter and hopefully this will continue throughout the year. REVIEW OF ROUND 1 Old Parade v Ivanho e From all accounts it was a scrappy affair at Bundoora with the home team opening up a strong 8 goal lead by half time, but Ivanhoe fought back through with an 8 goal 3rd quarter and got to within 14 points in the last quarter before Parade ran out winners by 21 points . For the home team the best included "Chook" O'Laughlin in the ruck, Digney and first gamer "JD" in defence, Daryl White (7 goals) and Harford who put together 4 quarters . Ivanhoe will be disappointed that they didn't start firing until after 1/2 time but can approach this -week with some confidence. Best for the Hoer's were Bullen and Lee on the ball, and Rawley and Scobie who completed fine tagging roles.

Old Trinity v Banyule I watched this game and it certainly was an exciting one, with the game in the balance up to the final siren . Banyule started with a strong breeze and Malty O'Brien on the wing showing the way but at 1/4 time led by only a goal mainly due to efforts of Trinity's captain - coach Dalrymple in the centre and Ramsden in the ruck who had a great battle with Big Dave Williams all day . Against the breeze Banyule kept their forward line open and with their defence lead by Egan, R. Williams and Dintinosante taking control kicked 6 goals to open up a 30 point lead at 1/2 time . The Bears kicked the lst goal of the 3rd quarter and it looked how far Banyule, but with Norman, Glass and Allibon in defence working hard Trinity were able to claw their way back with the next three goals to trail by 19 points at the 3/4 time break. Phillips goaled early for Trinity but Turnbull marked strongly and replied for Banyule . Trinity had gained the upper hand and with the wind at their backs were able to goal through Van Der Hoek, Allibon and Phillips to gain a I point lead late in the quarter . The next 5 minutes was tough as the play moved from end to end but Phillips kicked his third for the quarter on the siren to give Trinity a great win . Banyule will be greatly disappointed with the result but have improved on last year and will prove to be formidable opposition for everyone . Old Bri ghton v NOBS By the look of the quarter by quarter scores the wind was blowing at the Beach Rd oval and as predicted the game went down to the wire . North will be regretting their shooting for goal with the wind as

they were able to hold Brighton scoreless in the last quarter but unable to grab th e lead and the valuable four points . For the home team it was the reliable band of onballers of Pryor, Lennox and Kryzwniak that led the way and it was good to see an injury free Nick Perry kick 3 goals . For North the best included Collison, Curran and Abrahams. MRSOB v Old Ivanho e Melbourne High started the season well with a 41 point victory but the game was still in the balance up until half way through the 3rd quarter when Melbourne kicked clear with a 7 goal quarter. The scores indicate an even contest for the other quarters so it was just that one quarter that let Old Ivanhoe down. Melbourne High were well lead by Harrison and Harries in defence and Pertzel on the ball who has returned to the club from OM's . "The Doe" with 6 goals and Bambert with 3 from CHF were the leading goal kickers . For Old Ivanhoe Veal continually drove the ball forward from the half back line where up forward Donaldson won his usual tally of possessions . First gamer Tully, "Duca" Jenkins and Pappos were also good around the packs for Old Ivanhoe . Therry v Bu lleen-Templestowe Theny eventually overcame the Bullants with a 5 goal last quarter but would not have been happy with their kicking for goal. For the winners, youngsters Elliott and O'Connor had plenty of the ball, "prodigal son" Mick Grocock provided plenty of drive from the centre, whilst Boyle and Reddick had typically solid performances . The Bullants will be disappointed as they started well and at one stage during the second quarter lead by 5 goals but were unable to keep it going. Their best included Prior at HBF, Bryant in the ruck, Williams at CHB and Matthews on the ball . Preview of Round 2 Four out of 5 winners last week, so that wasn't a bad start . This week I am selecting Therry by 25 points, Bulleen-Templestowe by 10 points, Old Trinity by 30 points, Banyule by 20 points and Parade by I point in a thriller . Press correspondents for each club please contact me by 1 .00pm on the Monday following the game . Please call on 9457 4079 (Ali), 9268 1568 (BH) or fax 9268 1576 (BH) . I would like to hear from Banyule ( that's you Rat!!), Trinity, Brighton and NOBS ( that's you Shags!!!) . Ivanhoe is today, hosting a pre-match luncheon to honor the remarkable service of Harry Thomas, a stalwart of the club over the past 51 years . During this period, Harry has been a player, a committeeman and was President in the 1969 premiership year. He is still actively involved with the club as a timekeeper on match days .

C SECTION by Terry Quir k

~ eason 1996 began in earnest last week with some `h-,!very interesting results . The two promoted teams being Hampton Rovers and Thomastown were off to a flying start and served notice that they are both worthy competitors in this section . The Saints and SKOBS won by handsome margins to suggest they will both have good seasons, whilst the four clubs to lose first round matches will be keen to atone over the next few weeks. It would appear we have a very even competition, so close games and turn-ups should be on the cards . Rovers unfurled their flag and set about showing Ajax and the huge crowd the style of football that won the flag . The half time lead of 19 points to Rovers did not deter the Jackers who hit back to take the lead midway through the final term. For the Jackers defenders Cotten, Halpen an d Engelman, were very steady, whilst Feldman and Sheezel around the ground were very strong . To the Rovers credit, they found something extra when the chips were down against the breeze . The Rovers running game will be a worry to most sides on the larger grounds . At Bulleen, the Towners led all day and answered all challenges by Marcellin . Towners four goals into the wind in the second term were sensational and caused the Eagles to make several half time changes . Ch ris Slattery gave Marcellin much needed drive out of the centre in the second half but the damage was done . Fellows, Reid and Ristevs k i fired for the Towners. Well done Kevin and the Thomo's . A great start to '96 . Old Rdeltonians and SKOBS started very evenly with SKOBS poor kicking for goal allowing the Panthers to stay in touch . The SKOBS on-ballers ran riot in the second quarter, giving it a handy half way lead. The serious injury to Panther's captain Darren Murphy and the benching of Bryan Paterson upset the OM's. At the same time the SKOBS with "Longy" and "Dolly" playing well put in a very even perform ance. Grant Ferguson at full back an d Stroudy at half forward battled hard for the OMs . Congratulations to Tony Bournon on his 150th game . At Mentone, the Tigers were shocked by the first quarter onslaught by the Friars. With Robinson taking the big grabs up forward and on-ballers doing well, the Friars played superbly with the aid of the bayside breeze . The Tigers took the lead at half time and after two telling goals in the third quarter, took control . Winger Andrew Hayes, defenders Bob Vilos and Justin Sebire and forward Campbell Ross served the Tigers well . OGS were never in the hunt against St Kilda Sth

Caulfield with its forwards sadly out of touch . OG's new captain, James Taylor , led by example all day whilst new hackman, David Wellsby, proved to be a great acquisition for the club. The Saints put in a very professional performance and served notice of its 1996 intentions . A very tight defence ensured that the Saints were in charge of this game from the first bounce . ROUND 2 PREVIEW

The clash at Righetti Oval between the unbeaten SKOBS and Rovers will be a highlight. The battle between the on-ballers will decide this match . My selection . . . SKOBS by 22 points . Panthers travel to the Saint's ground in the battle of the '95 B Section teams . The Saints will certainly feel the effects of a team certain to bounce back after a disastrous first round . I'm selecting Old Mentonians by 24 points . The Friars and OGS will both be keen to secure an early win. My mail is that the Friars have the experience to put pressure on most sides, so this week I'll select them by a margin of 7 points . At Thomastown the Tigers will be in for a battle from the first bounce . I don't expect the Thomo's to let this one get away after last week's huge success . A final margin of 29 points to Thomastown would not surprise . The Lakeside battle between the Jackers and the Eagles will be very important to both clubs. One will come away with two early losses. The home ground advantage may not be enough for the Jackers, who I predict will trail the Eagles by 28 points at siren time. Saw Fos, Cinni and Eggy having a big pre-season at Yarrawonga recently . Worked wonders! Perhaps all clubs should try it next time. Reserves winners should be SKOBS, Old Mentonians, Whitefriars, Thomastown and Marcellin. Correspondents: by 5 .30 p .m . Monday (Saints, Rovers and Friars missing last week) . Phone & Fax : (03) 9889 9014. (NOTE: a change from last week .) Thanks for the E section report from Salesians . Big weekend Andrew?? 150 UP FOR "T.B . " Old Mentonians congratulate 1996 B & F winner Tony Bour'non who last week played his 150th game for the Club . Since joining the Panthers in 1987, Tony has had an incredible career as a half forward/rover whose skills have been a delight to watch by all OM supporters . Despite his size, Tony is also a good high mark and also a regular goal-kicking contributor with 247 goals to his name. As a senior member of the Club, much is expected of Tony who is also a good contributor off-field .

No more wandering, Nomad . . . congratulations on a great milestone.

D SECTION by Ken Bremne r

Terrific to get the season underway! No real surprises in Round 1, notwithstanding the dra w between the two newly promoted teams (St Leo's and Beaumaris) .

Conditions at all grounds were not conducive to good spectator football but it did make for tough uncompromising action. It could take a brave person (or an idiot!) to start making end of season predictions based on Round 1 results, however it is imperative for lst round losers to claim 4 points this week or face the daunting prospect of pushing the 'proverbial' uphill with a pointed stick! The early games are just so vital for confidence, momentum and allround club spirit not to mention the 'ladder' position. REVIEW - ROUND 1

Old Camberwe ll 17.15-117 def. Kew 15 .9-99 'Wellers' off to a bright start with early majors to the 'Doc', Walker, proven and short, with another good consistent second quarter they had built a handy 1/2 time lead . Kew's cockroach must have given his charges a good 'baking' at the break as they came out displaying much more vigour and attack at the ball . Whilst Kew lifted their overall game Camberwell's defence were able to keep them at bay and hold a four goal advantage at 'lemon' time . Late into the stanza the 'Brown & Golds' pegged back the lead to just 11 points only to see the 'Wells steady and with telling 'snags' by Doc and Tim James seal their fate by 16 points . For the Wells, best players were lst gainers S . Jack and M. Short ably supported by Captain Adam Kyriacou back from injury. Parkside 9 .17-71 def. Caulfield Grammar 8 .12-60 The Parkers line-up dwarfed by their opponents relied on their fitness, endeavour and the heavy ground conditions to get home in a tough encounter . Grammar snagged the first couple into a 5 goal breeze and looked the 'goods' .

Parkside rallied to lead by 14 points at quarter time only to see the lead evaporate by 1/2 time to the extent that caulfield went into the 'sheds' leaders by 10 points . The championship quarter had the Red Devils kicking 4 goals with 'plenty' of points to take a lead into the last stanza of 17 points . They defended by running hard, harassing and controlling the footy and came out eventual victors by 11 points .

THE

In an even tea m performance newcom- ~ er Mick Tessari , 'Diggers', 'Boota' and ~ veteran Mark Sherlock were good contributors . Whilst for the Grammar, Keown on debut, Dean Synman and Brent Baxter were valuable players . St Leo's 7 .8-50 drew Beaumaris 7 .8-50

The wet and windy conditions at Bennettswood ensured that defences of both sides would hold sway . Beaumaris kicking with the breeze in the lst quarter were held to no goals and the Leo's were then able to kick away to a healthy 1/2 time lead . Alas, the Two Blues went to sleep and the boys from the bay awoke from their own lethargy to hit back hard and in fact control the game and the lead till the dying moments when through some inspired individual efforts the Leo's managed to snatch the draw. For the Two Blues better players were Douglass, McKenzie and Dinny (a great Captain's game) . Monash Blues 8 .22-70 deÂŁ Southbank 7.11-53 Forget the scorecard . The biggest lead all day was the winning margin of 17 points in favour of the students . Qtr by Qtr margins were 1 point, 5 points and 4 points in favour of Blues, Bank, Bank. Southbank had in fact kicked away to a 16 pt lead 20 minutes into the 3rd and looked in total control yet within the blinking of an eye they (the players) stopped as if shot. Maybe their 1/2 time potion was spiked. Funnily enough I did see the good professor lurking around at or about that time, tut tut Keith!

In any event Blues deserved their dogged win and the Bankers will most certainly improve in the coming weeks . Better players for the Blues were "Chardonnay' Greg Hipwell, Doc Rogers, 'Silly' Hat Leigh Baring and the Bald Headed 'Dude', whilst for the Bankers new guy Maurice Sheahan along with 'Old' stagers Linford and Bear. St Johns O .C .'s 17.13-115 def. Uni Reds 7 .11-53 The boys from Doveton really turned it on for the Redz . Must admit it isn't the happiest hunting ground for many a team and I'm sure that by season's end Uni . Reds won't be 'Robinson Crusoe' on that score .

By all accounts my old cobber Stevie Wonder opps! I mean Steve Mooney has St Johns going along quite nicely and time may prove them to be the surprise packet of the Comp .

This week would be a test. How about a 6 pack Steve on the result ? PREVIEW - ROUND 2

Old Camberwell v. St Leo's - Testing material once again for the visitors especially on foreign soil . The Wells will need to be firing on all cylinders and the Leo's won't be able to relax as they apparently did last week. In a real close one, the Wells by 12 points . Caulfield Grammar v . Kew - Much improved performance by Kew last week (based on '95 form) and a gritty performance by Grammar . This game promises plenty and I've got a hunch that come siren time the home team will have their noses in front narrowly by 7 points . Uni Reds v . Parkside - The visitors will be brim full of confidence following their Round 1 success (and why not?) whilst the Redz will be bursting at the seams to get a result on the board. Sorry, not this time guys the Parkers will lead from go to whoa and get home comfortably by 6 "Big' Ones . Southbank v . St Johns OC's - Bankers managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory last week, however they'll be much harder to toss this time around . Mind you, winning form (St Johns) against losing form (Southbank) is hard to knock and St Johns will push to the limit . Against the 'grain' I'm tipping Southbank to fall in by 11 points . Beaumaris v . Monash Blues - Boys from the Bay just munching at the bit to give it to the students . Home ground advantage, unfurling of the flag and all the hype that goes with it will more than likely spur on the Beaumaris guys sufficiently to register victory by 4 goals. 'Dare of the Week' here we go for the lst of them for '96 . To the good 'Professor' and the 'Boys' from Monash . . . get the spoils down at Beaumaris and yours truly will travel out Monash way (a training night) and subject himself to personal ridicule by allowing you all to drag him through all your mud, stark naked! ! an opportunity to select an alternate pick-up point until some time in June . 7 out of 10 . 7 . Registered reserve section field umpires . Feedback suggests that the 1996 VAFA requirements were met. That is, umpires walked out together as an umpiring group ; all reserve umpires use the provided umpire change rooms ; umpires did not remain as part of their club; registered umpires only were used in matches . The only negative feedback seemed to be that umpire's attire was not quite up to standard in some cases. However for the first week a good mark of 8 out of 10. Please note that only umpires who have attended one of the provided registration evenings are to umpire reserve matches . 8 . Black List is bac k. Unfortunately a few clubs faltered, although reserve and club XVIII clubs excelled - see display elsewhere . This week's score 6 out of 10. This week's overall report card sees a score of 47 out of 80 - room for improvement, but quite a sound start to the new season . Good luck to a ll teams today. Phil Stevens

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

The Old Geelong Football Club and the Victorian Amateur Football Association mourn the passing last weekend of Nugget Stephens, a life member of the Club, and a life member and former Vice-President of the Victorian Amateur Football Association . Nugget's involvement with Old Geelong extended back over 40 years, to 1955, the year after the Club's inception . In 41 seasons he fulfilled virtually every conceivable role in the Club, from the unsung and the most mundane jobs through to President . More than that, he was always there : a popular friend, adviser, assistant, helper - and a wonderful diplomat for the club. He became well known, much liked and highly respected throughout Amateur Football . In 1978 he became the first member of the Club to be awarded the VAFA's Certificate of Merit . He went on to assist the VAFA with many years' service on the Permit Committee and helping with general administration, with a number of interstate teams, and as Vice-President of the Association . We will all miss him hugely. Sympathies are extended to members of Nugget's family and his many friends who will feel his loss greatly. Old Geelong AFC and the VAFA P.S. The VAFA flag at Elsternwick Park is at half mast in honor of the passing of A .H . "Nugget" Stephens .

Clubs were asked before the season began to nominate where they would like to pick up their "Amateur Footballers" each Friday . Unless clubs had nominated an alternative suggested venue all "Amateur Footballers" would be available for pick-up from Elsternwick Park only . As such pick-up points for April and May at least will be as follows : John Bell's p rivate address (31 Kenneth Street, Bulleen) Bulleen-Temp ; Ivanhoe ; North Old Boys ; Old Camberwell ; Old Ivanhoe ; Old Scotch ; Parkside ; Thornbury Cougars ; West Brunswick ; Warringal ; Uni High School Old Boys and Banyule . Beehive H otel (bottleshop) (84 B arkers Road, Hawthorn) Chirnside Park ; Eley Park ; Kew ; La Trobe ; Marcellin ; Newlands-Coburg ; Old Essendon ; Old Geelong ; Old Paradians ; Richmond Central ; Uni Blues .

Elsternwick Park All clubs not listed above .

An opportunity for clubs to change pick-up points will be offered early in June. Watch this notice for an e xact date regarding this announcement . J THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

Tiuring the extremely busy night of last Wednesday's permit processing a couple of permits submitted did raise a few smiles . One permit was for a player RABBITT. The absolute very next permit, processed by the same permit committee member was for a player BURROWES!!! ! It will lessen the seriousness of these evenings if clubs could arrange permits submitted in interesting order such as the one above.

included actually agree / disagree with the remark . The question remains .

At the recent VAFA Annual President's, Secretaries and Members' Dinner the following awards were presented . LIFE MEMBERSHIP : Cliff Bastow, Max Lyon, Ian Munro and Tony O'Callaghan . CERTIFICATES OF MERIT : Barbara Doran (St . Bernards), Steven Carroll (Uni. Blues), Chris Kelly (Mazenod), Jack Clancy (Melbourne Uni .), Roland Stephens (Old Mentonians), Robin Martin (MHSOB), Bill Attard (Banyule) and Tom Johnston (VAFA & Parkside) . Also awarded at this particular night are two other prestigious VAFA awards, the 1995 PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR and the 1995 MEDIA AWARD. These awards were won by Keith Frearson (Monash Blues) and Brian "Benny" Goodman (VAFAUA) respectively. Congratulations to all recipients of awards on one of the great nights of the VAFA year. A great way to kick off the season .

Last week we introduced AMY STANYER as the newest member of the VAFA Administration team, however we apologise for leaving out our latest addition in terms of ground staff . MICHAEL HALL has replaced TREVOR FLANNERY as VAFA part-time ground manager. Michael while still a member of the ground staff at Elsternwick Public Golf Course has been an added inclusion and has shown in a relatively short space of time that he is as equally as committed as Trevor was to having EP looking a treat each weekend . Although with both Woody and Trevor now gone CUB stocks seem to somehow be on the rise again, and ground staffing goes beyond 5 .30pm Friday.

In response to the PROFESSOR and the PREZ'S query on the "dearth" of football knowledge at an Executive Level this season the Rover obviously rescinds his remarks and apologises vehemently to those concerned . In actual fact the paragraph should have read "will no doubt add to the plethora of football knowledge of our Executive" . Or was it just a ploy to see just how many VAFA followers, Executiv e

Interesting to note some name changes for 1996 for some teams in the VAFA, ANZ BANK now will be called ANZ BANK ALBERT PARK, and the amalgamation of CANTERBURY NORTH BALWYN and BULLEEN UNITED has seen the formation of the new combine BULLEEN COBRAS .

Yes this week you will find all Amateur Footballer scribes "mug shots" appearing for the first time . Some scribes mysteriously missed their appointments for new "up to date shots", we wonder whether it was due to other commitments or whether last year's snaps were extremely complimentary . See if you can pick the new photos of the old heads, and whether the new "snaps" are anything to write home about. Also see if you can tell which scribes from '95 skipped the photo shoot, obviously a year is along time in football . Hey fellas .

E P3 1° SECTION by B.-sirry Hickey

i ain, driving wind, cold, slush underfoot, wasn't i t J_good to be transported back to July '95, when w e thought surely this could never happen again . In one of the soggiest starts to a VAFA season for years, there were some surprisingly high scoring matches and some exceptional football played . Yarra Valley and Aquinas showed that they will be the benchmark performers for this year with emphatic wins las t week, and the Saints surprised with the quality of their win over Chirnside Park. The scribe apologies to Chirnside Park for omitting them last week from the list of E East teams fielding an Under-19 side this year . He had in mind that four of our ten clubs were represented in Under19 Red Section, but simply forgot to mention the Parkers . On a general note, it was disappointing to, see that D and E Sections appeared to be mainly single umpire competitions last week, let us hope that the numbers will improve in the not too distant future . ROUND 1 REVIEW

Bulleen Cobras had a comfortable victory over Swinburne University in the ordinary conditions prevailing . Both sides will obviously be improved by the run, and today's games will give a better indication of their relative strengths . Richmond Central and Aquinas seemed to follow a similar pattern to the Yarra Valley/Old Carey game, with the Blooders bolting away in the last term to a comfortable win. Central was competitive up to that point, with big Bi lly Katellis booting 5 goals in the first half. On-baller, Glen Porteous, and winger, Keiran Tapley, played terrific games for Central, but overall they were overrun by the much fitter Blooders . Jason Livingstone had a solid start for Aquinas with 7 goals, and Peter Dunn had a great game at half forward . Eltham Collegians led Eley Park by 15 points at half time and Eley's coach, Adam Lenarcic, had to give his young charges some quiet counselling during the interval . It must have worked, because the Sharks put on 10 goals in the third, mainly through the Kaye brothers, Hawley and C. McEwen. Adam Lenarcic himself played a great game at full back, nullifying many Eltham forward moves . Yarra Valley and Old Carey staged an entertaining and competitive game until 15 minutes into the last quarter, when Yarra accelerated out of cruise mode and added a further 8 goals to the C's one, in a very impressive display. Even more ominous for all their opponents, Yarra was nowhere near full strength . Once again it was Yarra's half backs that did the damage, forcing the C's to weaken other posi-

tions to try to rectify the situation. In addition, Yarra completely dominated the mi d field as the game progressed, which overloaded the C's backs and culminated in the last term collapse . Brad Peake, Gavin McLeod, an d Fraser McVean were outstanding for Yarra, while Nick Everett, Nick Vasilopoulos and Hedgie Hickey battled hard but unavailingly for the C's . St . Mary's were too strong for Chirnside Park in a result which was contrary to all the pre-season scuttlebutt . PREVIEW ROUND 2 Aquinas host Bulleen Cobras and it is hoped the weather is kinder this week, because this should be a very good game . With conditions varying so much last round, the results aren't a good indicator of relative strengths, but Aquinas' mid field engine and strong forwards should give the Blooders a 5 or 6 goal advantage at the end of the day . Eley Park meet Richmond Central with the Centrals hell bent on posting their first points for the year . The young Sharks will give a good account of themselves, but Central's experience should enable them to have their noses in front on the line, especially if it is a fine day which will make the Central's marking strength a factor. Old Carey at home to Eltham will be anxious to atone for last week's drubbing, and should regroup sufficiently to take the points against the high scoring Collegians . This is a danger game for the C's, with Eltham having a potent set of forwards requiring watching for the entire game. Chirnside Park and Yarra Valley stage the first of their local derbies, and it is hard to see the Parkers turning round enough to beat Yarra, who now look to be even stronger than in 1995 . The Parkers resilience and determination is never to be underestimated, but even so Yarra should take this one out by 7 to 8 majors. Swinburne will be hard pressed to contain St . Mary's at this stage, and a big win is predicated for the Saints, whose form against the Parkers was devastating. RESERVES winners should be : Aquinas, Richmond Central, Old Carey, Yarra Valley and St . Mary's . Correspondents the Monday contacts ar e 9547 9144, and Fax 9547 7764 .

There were no reports at all from two Round 1 matches, so hopefully we can improve on that this week.

E CENTRAL SECTION by Darren Briggs

ld Essendon's massive 202 point thrashing of 3VAFA debutants Thornbury Cougars an d University Blacks' minor upset win over last year's grant finalists North Brunswick were the highlights of Round 1 of E Central matches in which West Brunswick confirmed its expected rebirth in 1996 . - ROUND 1. The fact that West Brunswick had 70 players available for selection prior to their home clash with UHSOB was probably the best indication as to how this match was headed . After a tight first quarter, the Magpies took over all over the ground on their way to a percentage boosting 77 point win . BOG for the winners was Nick Magafas, new recruits Coonan (ruck) and Lewis (CHB), while goals were shared by Sass and former B&F's Jacko and Davo . UHSOB captain coach, Mark Sedgwick spent time on the interchange bench to watch the demise of his charges and must be wondering how he can rebuilt last year's finalists now that the season has already begun . At Hoppers Crossing, visiting Newlands-Coburg had first use of a howling gale which they put to good use to establish a five goal break by quarter time . However, Westbourne hit back hard in the second term with nine goals of their own and their superior fitness allowed them to continue on to an easy 71 point victory . Best for the winners were Ben Dangerfield (ruck), Leon Fairfield who won countless possessions on the win and Scott Whiting (5 goals) while for Newlands Mick 'Speedball' Hayes showed the benefits of a big pre-season by booting three goals. Thornbury Cougars' first game in the amateurs turned out to be a nightmare almost as hellish as the Shark's back nine at Augusta! Despite holding Old Essendon to an inaccurate and somewhat modest 510 with the breeze in the first quarter, it was the second quarter in which the extreme difference in class was exposed . OEG kicked five more into the gale while holding the Cougars to just four behinds at half-time. A number of injuries after half-time only accentuated the problems of Thombury and they finished with only 14 players, very sick and sorry for themselves, victims of a Faldo-like 202 point hiding . Best for the winners included boom Riddell League recruit Peter Lutterschmidt and fellow new boys John Chapman and Scott McPherson, while Alex Capodiferro helped himself to six goals . At Fearon Reserve, a very hard fought battle saw Williamstown establish a slender 11 point advantage at half-time thanks mainly to Under-19 dynamo Nathan 'Wes destroyer' Bezzant firing in attack . Latrobe's backline, led by Sean 'Ruckus' Dunin was excellent in the third quarter before two late goal s 16

allowed Willi to slip away to a five goal break at three-quarter J time . The Towners lift- L--ed in the final term, outscoring the Trobers to record a convincing 7 goal win . Best for the winners McDaddy McLeod, Buddha Theges and wily veteran Dirty Harry while for Latrobe man mountain Ash Cummings was close to BOG . The Match of the Day saw University Blacks stamp themselves as finals contenders when they outplayed a sluggish North Brunswick unit in the first half in which they set up a match winning six goal advantage to which North made little inroads after the main break . Best for the resurgent Blacks were Ben Cunningham, Peter Caccaviello, Adam Koolos and Matt Hallam while for North rover Vin Grimaldi and new boys Kalpakis, Gennaccalo and Adams did best . To Doc Costello, I suggest North were without close to half last year's grand final side and as such I think a revision of my pre-season ratings is a little premature ! REVIEW - ROUND 2 Newlands Coburg host West Brunswick at their beloved confines of the postage stamp while I believe this will suit their physical style of play, it probably won't worry the seasoned West Brunswick boys either . West Brunswick are the better prepared combination at this stage and should emerge victors by eight goals . Interesting clash out at Bocce Palace where North Brunswick will be desperate to get their premiership campaign back on track at the expense of a confident Old Westbourne. This game presents a real opportunity for Westbourne to lift itself into the bracket of finals contenders but I expect North to have enough talent to rebound from last week's loss . North by 14 points . Thornbury will be hoping for a better showing when they host University Blacks . The problem for Thornbury is that last week's belting was accompanied by a number of injuries and as such they are not likely to have the artillery to bother the skill or fitness of the Blacks . University Blacks by 12 goals . At Boggy Bundoora, Latrobe host premiership favourites Old Essendon in a game which is likely to be low scoring due to the sticky condition of the massive University Oval . Old Essendon well and truly had the Trobers 'number' last year ad while I expect another committed effort from Latrobe, it needs to find someone capable of kicking a bag of goals up forward if it is to trouble the talent laden OEG line-up . Old Essendon should make it two straight in winning by five goals .

Finally, at Zooville UHSOB will look to improve on ! last week's dismal showing when it hosts Williamstown . I was fairly impressed with Willi last week; they are a side who do not rely on just one player - instead, it has 7-8 prime movers, making it very difficult for opposition sides to shut down all avenues to goal . Will should be too fit and talented for UHSOB and record a convincing 10 goal victory . Correspondents: Excellent response last (8/10) keep up the good work! Numbers again by Monday 5 pm are phone 9379 1411 (H), 9618 3414 (B) and Fax 9629 8008.

Social Note : University Blacks will be holding a past players/ officials luncheon prior to it's home game versus Latrobe on April 27th . Guests are likely to include Blacks and Latrobe premiership coach Peter O'Donohue - surely a test of this VAFA icon's allegiances!

100's AT U.H .S .O .B . Congratulations are extended to David Bennett and Craig Shone (20/4) on reaching 100 games at Uni High . Bcoth players started in 1989 and have given excellent service . 10 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996 17

he opening round of the E South competitio n 11 saw some interesting results last weekend, with some of last year's stronger sides troubled by less favoured opponents . Peninsula were lucky to get out of jail in a tight match against a spirited Elsternwick, whilst St . Pats were able to overthrow old rivals Oakleigh. REVIEW - ROUND 1

Amongst other Round 1 surprises, was Monash Gryphons' 53 point drubbing of ANZ Bank . Whilst many would concede that this was a game the Gryphons had the potential to win, none would have expected the Zedders to go down by such a large margin . The defeat marked a disappointing start to the season by ANZ Bank, after promising pre-season victories. The Gryphons skipped away to an early lead in the first term, which the Zedders did not have the capacity to peg back. In the second quarter, ANZ fought back to trail Monash by a more respectable margin . However, after the main change, the Gryphons buried their opponents by capitalising on ANZ's failure to man up and costly turnovers . Monash's victory was a milestone for the club, as it was the first time that both its senior and reserves sides emerged victorious on the same day . For the Gryphons, Nick Karavias starred in the centre to provide a good supply to a strong half-forward line where Wells and Fraser were dominant . For ANZ, winners were few and far between with the exception of Paul 'Capper' Boyle, Chris 'Tipper' Walkley and Peter Smith at full forward . An underdone Monash Whites, were no match for Power House who sailed home by a mammoth seventeen goals last weekend . The Whites never troubled the talented Power House side, who used eleven different players as avenues to goal . Morris played a versatile role in the ruck for Power House, whilst Clayton gave plenty of drive from the back flank . Harrison on the wing, and Hall who roved, also contributed strongly . It was a grim start to the season for Monash Whites, who only managed three goals for the game . Hopefully the Whites will re-group after their crushing loss and show some form against arch-rivals Monash Gryphons today . When Glenhuntly made its E south debut last weekend against Salesian, they met a strong and determined side . Salesian were keen to show their best for their former coach Ange Lamanna, who has taken hold of the reigns at Glenhuntly this year, and they did so in a convincing fashion . Salesian wel-

comed the return of goal shark Rob Cincotta who kicked 9 goals for the day. The two sides had a fiery encounter, although Salesian emerged as the far better side . Mick Hazell and Stuart Bobetic helped see Salesian march out with a convincing 65 point win. The closest match of the round was battled out between last year's runner-up Peninsula and Elsternwick . With the aid of a strong wind, the Wickers kicked away to a five goal lead by quarter time. Peninsula, who were without the services of Drew Warne Smith and Pete Angus looked a depleted side early in the match . Elsternwick battled hard all day, but lost the game when the Pirates contained them in the third quarter . For Peninsula, McMahon contributed well in the middle, whilst Landry could not be beaten at centre half back . Elsternwick should be encouraged by their performance against a class side . The final match of the round saw the new look St . Pats defeat old foes Oakleigh. The Vultures took the field with several new faces in their line up, courtesy of a pool of young talent pushing their way into the senior side. St . Pats got an early jump on Oakleigh, and had the Krushers playing catch up football for the rest of the game. The match was tight until the third quarter when the Vultures restricted Oakleigh's scoring to set up a five goal win . For St . Pats, skipper Karl Gurtler was at this best in the centre, Owen Hillebrand also played well and Mick Sullivan lead the backline with his attacking play . PREVIEW ROUND 2

Monash Whites have a tough challenge in playing an in form Monash Gryphons today . Although the Whites defeated the Gryphons last season, the Gryphons now look like being a fiercer more competitive side and should overcome their opponents . Salesian will hope to continue it's winning form against Power House, however Power House's goal scoring versatility should see it over the line . Peninsula will take on Glenhuntly after the two sides met in a practice match in the pre-season . The Pirates defeated Glenhuntly on that occasion, and given last weekend's perfonnance . Peninsula looks to be the more powerful side . St . Pats will have an arduous task in defeating Elsternwick today, considering the form that the Wicks showed at home last week . Both sides look like having big years and on paper they are evenly matched . The Vultures should come through howev-

er, as they are tough to beat at their home ground Both ANZ Bank and Oakleigh are coming off big losses from last weekend and will be keen to balance the ledger after round two . Oakleigh should have too many talented players to be .troubled by the Zeddars .

er football weather prevailed for the opening round as wind and rain negated many of the skills of our game . Results did not go as I predicte d and as a result my success rate was a less than creditable 50% . REVIEW of ROUND 1 NORTH Hawthorn Citizens showed they will be again a top side when they downed the supposedly improved Marcellin by thirty nine points . "Eagle" Coach "Tubby" Kennedy has fostered a good spirit among his Marcellin players who are expected to improve greatly on their 1995 form . Therry, under rookie Coach Ron Costello, started impressively with a clear cut thirty point victory over debutant side, Old Essendon Grammarians . The question being asked by the Therry stalwarts was ; what margin would the victory have been if Ron was an organised Coach? St Bernard's, through a fifty eight point victory over arch rival Kew put two theories on notice : The first is that St Bernard's will again be a force in the competition . The second is that Kew's downward march has continued from late 1995 . Collegians, unlike the Carpetbaggers, came from the south and plundered the North Old Boys to record a meritorious victory by fifty six points . Could the Northern Section prove to be the saviour of Collegians? Time will tell . Old Ivanhoe had the Bye . SOUTH Reigning premiers Old Scotch were humiliated by their arch rivals Old Xaverians . The "Crocodiles" were largely untroubled to defeat the inaccurate "Cardinals" by sixty seven points . This game was the only one in the section that I predicted correctly . The amalgamated Old Brighton-Bloods, which was the Phil Stevens appellation on Club info-line, defeated Old Melburnians by thirty six points after a fairly one sided game. De La Salle again gave evidence of their talent when they defeated fellow 1995 finalist Mazenod by forty nine points after another one sided match. Old Geelong, spurred by the financial parameters laid down by first secretary Lemon, managed to defeat St Kevins by eight points in the closest contest of the round . VUT had the bye which provided an extra opportunity to study the way to the Righetti

Oval . Pl: UVIEW OF ROUND

TWO NORTH Hawthorn Citizens face a danger trip across town

to Keilor to play newcomers Old Essendon Grammarians, who will be seeking their initial victory . Form and experience prompt me to select Hawthorn Citizens . Kew, at home to Therry, will provide a formidable foe to the Costello trained novices (they will become Abbots) . I am in no doubt as to the results of this match as Therry do not have a good away from home record as Kew have slipped down the ladder . At home I select Kew without any firm conviction . St Bernards journey to Albert Park to play the leaders Collegians . (In ten seasons of writing, this word has never been appropriate to Collegians . The match will be a guide to the comparative strength of the two sides . Although the new Harry Trott Oval will provide conditions not encountered before by most, if not all St Bernards players, I feel St Bernards will prove too talented for Collegians . Debutants Old Ivanhoe Grammarians host North Old Boys who lost decisively to Collegians last week . Even though Old Ivanhoe have no form to recommend then I suggest their form couldn't be worse then that shown by North last week . Therefore I select Old Ivanhoe . Marcellin have the Bye. SOUTH The rejuvenated Old Brighton will be able to gauge their improvement against the competition yard stick, Old Xaverians, who won so well last week . Although the Brighton Beach Oval will help the home side I believe the "Crocodiles" will prove stronger and thus take the four points . At Malvern, Old Melburnians play De La Salle. The home side won well last week whilst the OM's went down by thirty six points . When judged on that evidence I confidently predict De La Salle to win again . VUT journey east for their 1996 debut against St Kevins who disappointed last week . I am sure stalwart coach Geoff Fletcher will have VUT ready for action . If his players can display at least part of Geoff s determination they will win well . For Geoff s sake I select VUT. Old Scotch have the bye .

U19 SECTIONS by Brett Connell

REVIEW ÂŽF 2` . VLE E7 '3 T':IATC?-?:S Division On e )'Id Paradians opened their account at th e expense of AJAX despite Davis kicking fou r majors for AJAX. Straight kicking could have seen Parade win by much more had they been on target. Old Xavs showed that they have lost nothing with a thumping of St . Bernards at Toorak Park . Barrett and Donati amongst the goals for the victors . Uni . Blues jumped Therry at Glenroy and were never headed . Old Melburnians, with four solid quarters of football kept De La Salle to a losing score with Coach and Bennett providing focal points up fornvard. North Old Boys had their first taste of Section 1 with a strong win against Collegians, and will be happy with the way they began . Division (2) Blue

Beaumaris kicked the sweep against St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield and showed no signs of relenting throughout, Boctor and Blackie helping themselves to 9 and 8 goals respectively . In a tight contest at Monash, Caulfield Grammarians narrowly defeated Monash Blues, with their 8 goal to 5 second half being the difference. Mazenod pipped Old Brighton at Waverley in another close match, once again Mazenod's steadier second half proving the difference . Old Haileybury outscored a young Hampton Rovers team into the wind and were never headed all day, Byms and Walden helping themselves to big bags of 6 and 5 respectively. Division (2) Red In an even contest for the major part of the day Whitefriars defeated Aquinas by 23 points, with Jongebloed and Lacey proving to be headaches for John Bourke around the goals . Marcellin jumped Old Scotch at the start and rolled on their happy way with a convincing win, Badanjek beginning the year off well again as to did Bello. Old Carey welcomed Yarra Valley to the U19 section with a big win, and Old Trinity doing the same on return to Chirnside Park whose final half gave every indication that they will improve during the year. Division (2) White

Warringal's height saw them easily account for Bulleen Templestowe who will impr~ve on this performance. Old Camberwell played four quarters of team football to beat St . Leos easily, and Old Geelong motored away in the second half to win comfortably, against Uni. Blacks . Williamstown held the lead all day against De La Salle (2) and maintained it until the final bell, with Robinson providing a focal point up forward . 22

Preview of today's ~ game s Division On e St . Bernards host Old Paradians and this clash of two ACC rivals will be a beauty . St. Bernards home ground advantage, despite their poor showing last week, will be the difference . Uni . Blues host Old Xavs at the Uni, with both sides coming off resounding wins last week. In a toss of the coin Uni . Blues . De La Salle host Therry and will prove too strong at home . Collegians play host to Old Melburnians with Mark Zuker having the OM's playing good solid football they should win. In a close match North Old Boys travel to AJAX and in another toss of the coin AJAX to open their account . Selections : St. Bernards, Uni . Blues, De La Salle, .OM's & AJAX

Division (2) Blue St . Kilda Sth Caulfield host Ormond and with both sides yet to open their account I select Ormond to reverse last year's result at Murrumbeena . Caulfield Grammarians are at home to Beaumaris and I cannot see Peter's boys dropping this one . Old Brighton should prove too strong for Monash Blues at Brighton and likewise Mazenod over Hampton Rovers . Old Haileybury have the bye . Selections : Ormond, Beaumaris, Old Brighton & Mazeno d Division (2) Red In a clash of two sides who won handsomely last week I believe Warringal will defeat Old Camberwell at Balwyn . Old Geelong should prove too strong for St. Leos, with Williamstown hosting Uni . Blacks at the Williamstown (VFL) Ground, and winning their second game on the trot, St . Kevins will be tested by Bulleen - Templestowe but should prove too good in the end after coming off the bye last week . De La Salle (2) have the bye . Division (2) White Aquinas host Old Paradians (2) at North Ringwood with both teams returning to the competition in 1996 . With Old Paradians having the bye last week I believe Aquinas will be better for the run. Old Scotch host Whitefriars at the Camberwell Sports Ground and will prove too strong on their home ground . Old Carey and Marcellin should be the match of the round, in what is a real stab in the dark I believe Peter Randall's boys will prove too strong in the finish, as too should Old Trinity , who host Yarra Valley at Bulleen . Chimside Park drew the bye . Selections : Aquinas, Old Scotch, Marcellin & Old Trinity THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

VALE GLENN ELSON Chirnside Park was shocked and deepl y saddened by the recent tragic death of U19 player, Glenn Elson, in a car accident . Last year, in his first year as an U19 player, he received a trophy for his tireless and dedicated efforts. Although still an U19 player, his aim this year was to make the Senior side. His friendly manner and ever smiling face will be sorely missed around the Club. The Club intends to perpetuate the award he won last year as the Glen Elson Award.

5 YEARS 199 1 Section umpires in first round were Justi n :, ~ Toohey, Darren Dalgleish, Richard Simon, Mark Bushfield, Russell Francis, Mark Jenkins, Stephen Clinch, Robert Bell, Andrew Kilner, Steve McCarthy. Guest speaker at PSM dinner was Bob Rose and he enthralled all with the story of his start at Nyah West and his career at Collingwood as player and coach. Bob's humility and sportsmanship came out in his speech. The Executive invited a number of former amateur players who had gone on to play at Collingwood including Ray Gabelich (P'side), Duncan Wright (Alph .) Laurie Hill (Ivanhoe), Doug Gott (Ivanhoe) and Colin Davey (Old Scotch). Ian Cover, Coodabeen Champion, regaled the dinner with stories of his 75 game career at Geelong - as a TRAINER . Old Haileybury made a sustained first time ever entry to 'A' Section when they outclassed Ormond to win by 53 points . McKenzie, David Connell and Meehan were far too slick for Ormond and cut the `Monds' to shreds in the centre square . Orton, Tanner and Walden were also dominant. Old Melburnians had a nightmare return to 'A' Section after 8 years as North Old Boys annihilated them . Atkinson, Garnham, Carney, Egan (7 gls .) were NOB's best . The Witts brothers and new recruit and assistant coach Mark Hibbins worked hard . I

Match of the day in 'B' Section turned out to be a mis-match . In the last match of 1990 Banyule outclassed Old Trinity . In the first quarter of 1991 Old Trinity started with a 7 goal burst that left Banyule floundering . Final scores, Old Trinity 21 .15, Banyule 9 .11 . Best: M . Beardsley, Sammut, R . Beardsley, O'Shaughnessy (6 gis .) (OT) and Moloney, Mill, Fraumanco (Ban .) .

Selectors were out at games as the AAFC Carnival was to be played in Perth in June . Selectors were Noel Rundle (Chairman), Andrew Langford-Jones, Andrew Chisholm, Greg Tootell, John Morgan, Geoff Reilley . 10 YEARS AGO - 198 6

Former University Blues and Melbourne star, and highly respected ABC expert Doug Heywood was Guest Speaker at the third VAFA media/sponsor's luncheon . Old Melburnians personality Arcaie Salek was anchor man on VAFA's World of Sport segment . Prominent among the reinstatement's wer e

[How did they miss you Andrew? NR]

Goal umpire Arthur Smith, always immaculate, and smart between the posts, officiated in his 200th game with the VAFA, including A and B Grand Finals. Among the goals in Round 1, Curtain, (Old Xavs) 9, Priestly (Old Brighton) 12 - will they come back again, Scullin (N .Brunswick) 9, Murrcutt (Therry) 11, McInnes (Melb . Univ .) 11 .

UMPIRES CORNE R by Steve McCarthy and Anthony Darne n

7 7,ell, wasn't it great to be back into it last week . ;a,''.! We all had the opportunity to show that those long hot nights of pre-season paid off. For a few umpires they were able to strut their stuff in higher grades . Congratulations to the following fieldies, Heath Little (A), Chris Donlon and Mark Pinney (B), boundary Glen Drummond (A) and goalie Brad Nash in A . Also we welcome Mark Jenkins back to A Section, Darren Dalgleish after a year in the Under19s and President Richard Simon after a year off . Hey Leah!! ! After many years as a successful boundary umpire Leah Gallagher has decided on a new career as a field umpire . Leah had a disastrous 1995 due to injury so let's hope this season will be a little more active (now that she's become a real umpire) . Good luck with the transition, Leah . .#* .~ Last week we mentioned the guidelines for the column, one which was "no comments on appointments" . Well, we've broken that already in the first two paragraphs so here goes again . At last week's meeting there were quite a few murmurs around the room when Bomber mentioned that due to a shortage of personnel there would be quite a number of oneumpire appointments. Interesting to see the dummies fly across the room from the direction of the OSCARS, many of whom felt they were badly done by . As the boss said "it's character-building" and will certainly be great experience for them at this early stage of their careers. . . .* . The first Bomberism of 1996 - "when a player runs for a period of space" . Also from the meeting it was great to hear from David Scott (without the desert boots - remember Cooky!) who's back as Chairman of the Umpire Committee. We look forward to your support David . .* .* . As an umpire we bid farewell to Agate, sorry, Peter Harris who has taken up various positions with the VAFA . His main role will be assisting with the Tribunal on Tuesday nights . He will also observe reserve grade umpires, be assisting with Elsternwick Park Duty Officer duties, take final siren scores by phone, as well as sitting on the Umpire and Permit committees . What do you do with your spare time

0

Agate? Your shuffle will be missed in those lower grades, as will your ever-popular presence at the after match. ÂŤ . : .* After Ag gave us his annual 'origami' lesson last week we learned that we only had one report form each . Heard that Marty Jackson wore out his photocopier on Friday . It is true that Michael Rossarto will wear a nappy next time he attempts a road run . Nothing worse than Tuns on the run' . .~ . ._ More pre-season news . After pushbike accidents Marty Jackson and Chris Wallis will be fitting training wheels . From practice matches we had Brad Noonan KO's (special thanks to Yarra Valley and Oakleigh officials for their care and assistance ) and Laddy needed a Melways . Last week we mentioned the Simons' impending birth, well number three son has arrived in the form of William Richard Simon weighing in at 91b 10 . Looks like the Simon 's will fill the centre line at Essendon in about 2015 . Come on Richie, two more and you'll beat the Danihers. Pam, congratulations to you, good luck with your house full of blokes . Quote from the troops at the meeting - "I'm not changin'" - guess who? This time last year - In Umpire's Corner we talked about how skills coach Benny Goodman asked us to be 'Mole Rodels'. We also congratulated Mike Murray on his VAFA Certificate of Merit - contribution to Amateur Football . ~ .~ ., Last week Noel Rundle's column had an interesting snippet from 1986 . Of the ten round one A Section umpires there is only one survivor in 1996, an S . McCarthy . Of the others Ron Lippold is an advisor, John Horwood an observer and Ken Coughlan a goalie . Well done Macca - 11 years in a row (thanks Richard - how's the groin?) (AD made me write that) . Apologies to Chris and Helen Keeton who we left off the impending arrivals list last week . We'll keep you informed .

MELBOURNE SPORTS BOOKS

COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by AFCA/VAFA

THINK LIKE A CHAM PION To years ago major celebrations were held fo r one of the greatest and most widely known moments in the history of sports : the first sub-4minute mile . You've probably read or heard that Roger Bannister achieved this historic breakthrough 40 years ago, on May 6 1954, with a 3 :59 .4 mile . What you may not know, however, is a more intriguing fact than the date and time of Bannister's race : In little more than the next 12 months, four other runners also broke through the previously impossible barrier . Why? Had the human species suddenly evolved into a higher organism, capable of running with greater speed and endurance ? Of course not. The only possible explanation for the post-Bannister rush of sub-4 milers is that 4 minutes had represented more of a mental barrier than a physical barrier. Knowing that Bannister had run 3 :59, the rest of the world's milers could no longer think such a time was beyond their reach . They had little choice but to redouble their efforts to run as fast as Bannister and faster . The Bannister story is perhaps the best example in sport of this basic concept : Negative thinking limits performance . Turn the thinking around, and suddenly the impossible becomes possible . This doesn't apply just to breakthrough performers, world records and gold medals. It applies to every one of us, to every race we run, to every game we play and, indeed to every situation we face in our lives . There is no doubt if you train your mind - your body will follow . By the year 1954 more than 50 medical journals had carried articles saying it was humanly impossible to break 4 minutes, but Bannister didn't buy their arguments . He refused to limit his own potential . His success proved that we are capable of doing those things we are capable of doing those things we are capable of believing . Or, to put it another way, as an athlete you should always "act as if you can" . With this positive attitude, you can then find out the truth of your athletic potential by living out the experience . A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB

The most obvious example of this "I CAN" credo is Sir Edmund Hillarys' conquest of Mount Everest . Hillary :- "We discussed the matter and decided for the snow. We commenced plugging up in foot deep steps with a thin wind crust on top and precious little belay for the ice-axe . It was altogether most unsatisfactory but whenever I felt feetings of fear it, I'd say t o 28

myself forget it' this is Everest and if you want to beat it you have to take a few risks !" A football game is no comparison to the Worlds Highest Mountain . But it certainly represents a challenge, quite likely your most serious sporting challenge and it contains its share of risks. Taking on an opponent when we have the ball Throwing ourselves on the boot of an opponent Throwing ourselves at opponents in possession Ensuring we make a contest of every issue Running off our opponents to offer and allow a switch to occur Backing into packs for a mark Hillary continues:- "On re-reading my diary after twenty years I forget the impression I that I must have been a rather uncomfortable person at times on the expedition - restless, competitive and a little argumentative. Yet my memories of the expedition have revolved about the good times, about the people I liked and laughed with, the toughjobs we did together and the feeling that everyone was giving of their best according to their strengths. We were a good team - of that I am convinced - and it was this - our powerful team spirit - more than anything else, that ultimately got Tenzing and me to the top of Everest . " Hillary is talking about mountain climbing but it obviously relates to all 'team' sports . People prepared to make sacrifices, people with character, people wanting to build team spirit ultimately gain the most satisfaction and receive the greatest rewards . STAGE FOR HEROIS M

American poet James Dickey once said that you could go through your entire life in the western world without ever finding out whether or not you were a coward . I am sure we are grateful we are not living in other times, or still - we play sport to explore our qualities - to test ourselves . Clear your head of any negative repercussions . Maintain a positive attitude throughout the game. Eagerness and enthusiasm Stimulate and challenge each othe r Positive vocal contributor - 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 time Expect the unexpected - unpredictablility is a highlight of our game . Enjoy it . lubs were advised after the Executive seminar C (1995) of the changed rule and procedures relating to investigations for the 1996 season . For this year the following is to apply for the lodging of complaints by clubs . A) Any complaint must be received by the Association (c/- Phil Stevens) by noon of the Friday following the playing of the match in question . To be valid, a cheque for $200 must accompany the letter of complaint. This cheque is refunded if the matter goes to investigation and is not ruled to have been a frivolous complaint. B) Following discussion between the VAFA's Chief Executive Officer, who will have conducted a brief preliminary investigation, and the Tribunal /Investigations Chairman, it will be decided whether the complaint will be proceeded with. C) The club which has had the complaint made against it will be contacted by the VAFA during that same Friday afternoon where this club will be given the opportunity of lodging a counter complaint . If this is to be done this club must lodge a letter of complaint with the VAFA (again with a cheque for $200) . This letter and cheque must be received by the VAFA by 9 am of the following Monday . D) Should it be decided that the complaint(s) be heard the appropriate charge letters will be processed and will be in the club's hands later that week with a hearing set for Tuesday of the following week . This year, from the day of the match to the night of the hearing, a period of eighteen (18) days only will have elapsed-and compares most favourably with the past where up to 25 days sometimes elapsed from day of match to the night of hearing . One of the clubs put this idea to the Seminar for consideration, which is an excellent improvement i n the system . ~**~ * Please note that all section's reserve matches must commence at 11 .30 am . ~**~* Please note that last week's "Amateur Footballer" printed all those playing coaches who had in 1996 become eligible to act as such, after having fulfilled recent VAFA requirements . Please also understand that all playing coaches who played in 1995 and who have previously completed VAFA playing coach requirements need not worry, they are eligible to play in 1996 as they have met VAFA playing coach requirements respectively . Thanks Tim Corrigan (St. Kevins) for pointing out that this point should have also been made in last week's "Amateur Footballer" . In response to last week's editorial section on the improvement of the on-field image of officials, please 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

Senior and under 19 coaches were advised the week before Easter that the VAFA Executive has adopted for the 1996 season the new tackling rule that was adopted by the AFL for its matches this season. This rule reads: "A player in possession of the ball who has hada reasonable time (prior opportunity) to dispose of the ball must, when legally held by an opponent firmly enough to retard his progress, dispose of the ball by a kick or handball within a reasonable time of being held, otherwise a free kick shall be awarded against the player for failing to dispose of the ball in a legal manner. " It is believed that this law will improve the previous situation which in many cases provided little reward for the tackler. I believe that in the games I saw last weekend that the new rule was well interpreted by the umpires and did improve the game.
