EDITORIAL by Phil Steven s

Today I have asked VAFA President David Burnes to provide us with an insight into his thoughts on Amateur football, where it is placed these days and his thoughts on the year ahead . Phil Steven s

A

s we enter our 103rd year of competition I suppose it is reasonable to ask the question : "Where does Amateur Football fit in the current football scene in Victoria?" The answer is that the VAFA sits very comfortably, with its current position in Victorian football . Whilst this year the number of new clubs in the VAFA has only increased by 1, the number of U19 teams and Club 18 teams has increased significantly which shows that the clubs are themselves growing and becoming stronger, in many cases fielding 4 teams . With the establishment of the new VFL competition every footballer in Victoria now has a clear career path towards AFL football . Although most AFL players will be drafted from the senior State League competitions I feel it is significant that VAFA players still get drafted directly to AFL clubs without having played in the UIBs or State League competition, a trend which I believe will increase rather than decrease . I know a number of people will be a little sceptical of my last statement - however I feel it is well founded. The reason for this is I firmly believe that the level of talent that exists in the VAFA is one of the best kept secrets in football . Whilst I concede that the newly formed VFL is the strongest competition within Victoria, I feel that the VAFA has a good argument to say it should be ranked No. 2 with consecutive victories against the VCFL . The only question mark lies with the VMFL and we would welcome the chance to play a representative match against their best team and we will be pursuing this sooner rather than later . Getting back to what I was saying about AFL clubs recruiting directly from the VAFA the reason I say this is the increasing number of ex-AFL players who are turning to coaching within Amateur ranks . In season 1996 within VAFA coaching ranks there are 15 ex-AFL/VFL players . I am sure that as these coaches become accustomed to Amateur Football, a world of football that I am sure most of them never knew existed, the feedback between them and their former AFL clubs will result in more VAFA players being put under scrutiny .

For an example of this, one only has t o look as far as the - .~ Melbourne FC who this year drafted to their senior list Anthony Leoncelli and put Rohan Price, Christian Davidson and Anthony McDonald on their supplementary list. All these players represented the VAFA against the VCFL and current Melbourne Chairman of Selectors and ex-Old Xaverian Coach Barry Richardson would have had ample time to study them. It is of interest to note that of the four players taken by Melbourne all were coached by ex-AFL players in 1995, i.e . Wayne Harmes with Rohan Price at Scotch, Leigh Carlson with Christian Davidson at Collegians and Anthony McDonald and Andrew Leoncelli with Barry Richardson at Old Xaverians. I have no doubt that Collegian's coach Leigh Carlson would have had numerous calls from Sydney before they drafted Simon Arnott from the Collegians Club in 1995 . Therefore, I believe that with this increased movement of ex-AFL players into VAFA coaching ranks the standard of coaching and consequently the standard of football must improve and be of enormous help to players who desire to go on and play in the AFL .

Having outlined the position the VAFA holds in relation to a career path for players to go and come back from the AFL/VFL we still provide and will continue to provide a form of competition where everyone is capable of finding a level to play which is commensurate with their own individual level of ability . We will continue to provide a safe competition in which to play football, where foolish, reckless and undisciplined actions will be strongly disciplined and the amateur ethic of playing for the love of the game is paramount . Last Saturday I journeyed (and journeyed) to Chirnside Park to watch them play Yarra Valley . During the season I want to travel far and wide and see as much of, and as many of our teams as possible. I intend also to closely monitor our Albert Park grounds to see that VAFA teams playing there will not become a disadvantaged group . If we look after what we already have and develop from within there is no reason why Amateur Football should not be just as strong in 30 years' time . David Burnes VAFA President

A SECTIO N by Don Blackwood CARDINALS - KINGMAKERS 0 Id Scotch nailed down another '95 grand finalist ; this time the premiers Old Xaverians in a show of early season strength at Toorak Park . Following on from their blitz of University Blues in round one, the Cardinals can be well satisfied with a fine start . Together with an improved Co ll egians and a revitalised Old Melburnians these sides are now round the first bend -undefeated . Mazenod scored their first win in A Section with an excellent result over nemesis Old Haileybury who cleaned them up in the '95 B Section grand final . Dispelled some of those early doubts . Are we good enough to be part of this elevated competition? A spanking win over the Bloods is a perfect response . At the other end of the table, Ormond an d De La Salle are showing only spirited signs of playing a formidable role in the early season's ladder shape . But also worrying is St Bernards reversal ; a belting by 86 points by the Lions in their own den at Buckley Street . By the way, Old Xaverians need a score on the board -soon. Perhaps it's De La Salle today ? So players are gone from last year; lists are starting to settle and coaches summing up the material to work with in the immediate weeks . But with injuries beginning to mount, sides who are able to turn problems into possibilities will be the ones to gain that significant break on the opposition . REVIEW UNIVERSITY BLUES V DE LA SALLE

A pleasant day in the autumn sun brought forward a large crowd at Melbourne University to witness University Blues return to some of the form that made them a power last year . However, it was a spirited De La Sa ll e who weren't to be denied, just when you thought that the Blues would race away to a crushing win in the last stanza . Still a 43 point margin in the heavy conditions, helped by a blazing seven goal third quarter, is not a bad result . A couple of new Blues' faces in Andrew Muller, formerly of MHSOB, Drew Slimmon (U19's), Tim Rourke (country) spread the load around and with Nathan Cavali er and Andrew Henderson skipping across the turf, De La Salle had no answers . Lack of any capable forwards made it difficult for De La and it was left to Matthew Chun and Luke Lappo rte to clean up in the backline . Chris Brasher is enjoying a more versatile role, but the absence of any real quality players will haunt De La Salle in the coming weeks . ORMOND V OLD MELBURNIAN S Never going to be many goals kicked in the heavy

conditions at the 'Gunn' . But Old Melburnians managed to score most of them even with the loss of two players sent off during the third quarter . A second quarter wind-up with Ian McMullen bagging two valuable goals set the scene and a five goals to one in the third was the sealer . So an easy win by 41 points confirms an early presence by OM's and with class players in Cameron Eabrey, plus onballers Peter O'Brien and Minnie Thompson, there were plenty of avenues to goal . Chris Bryan dominated the ruck battles and it was left to the experience of Andrew Jobling and Anthony Grace (4 goals) to carry the day for the Monds. Good times ahead for the Redlegs : a battle for Ormond . OLD XAVERIANS V OLD SCOTCH The Cardinals repeated the dose from last year when Xavs fell victim to Old Scotch by 15 points . A slight points improvement this year but a terrific start with wins now over both of last year's grand finalists and early foundations laid for '96 . Captain Stuart Steele is heading up a young team and with James Peterson an d Curtis Reid brave in defence, it was difficult for Xavs to break through . A restricted Mike Blood didn't help Xavs as they tried to curb the Scotch onslaught in the third quarter . Cam Health (4 goals) is back and his goal kicking twin Andrew Millar may not be far behind . Xavs were gallant with Dan Richardson kicking another five and Simon Wood named best . Glory days for Scotch ; early days for Xavs. ST BERNARDS V COLLEGIANS In your wildest dreams, thoughts of an 86 point drubbing by Collegians over St Bernards deep in the bowels of Buckley Street would seen a nightmare . But it happened, and reopens the question of St Bernards abilities . But how good are Collegians? Is this shades of the Lions from back in the early nineties . Maybe just a blip and wins over Mazenod and St Bernards is not a true test . Apart from the first quarter, Collegians were in control and with James Bennett blanketing Jason Gollant and Anthony Parkin providing drive from half back, Brook Mooney was given tons of chances for his six goals . For St Bernards, Shane Ryan made an impressive return after severe knee injuries and Ben Chatfield was great support up back . Paul Gilmour (five goals) and Damien Juegen also did well in a dark day for the black and gold verticals . MAZENOD V OLD HAILEYBURY The celebrations were long and strong as th e

2 ÂŽ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

Nodders won their first match in their inaugural season in A Section . Old Haileybury started favourites but b3azenod bounced off well as they did at the start of each quarter. Ruckman Mick O'Hara had plenty to do with that at centre bounces and was greatly assisted later on by U19 star Drew O'Donoghue. Stephen Boysen and Adam Hanley were fine players as was Michael Hunt. The result was never in doubt as Mazenod were always in control and were able to quickly reply to any Bloods' surges . For Old Iiaileybury, Nick Morey starred again and giant Adam Hilton has his hands full, but managed two goals . Key forward Andrew Walden was well held in an early setback for the Bloods as Mazenod enjoy the fruits of their win .

to gain an important break on the rest of the field . Collegians could be two games up on University Blues, but they won't do it as the Blues machine cranks up to win by 21 points. Old Xavs will break the ice at the hands of a struggling De La Salle to win by 23 points, while Old Scotch will now eye some percentage boost against Ormond at Camberwell and be victors be 39 points . Old Melburnians will remind Old Haileybury that they are well and truly in A Section and defeat them comfortably by 39 points at the Junction Oval . And in the final match St Bernards former ghost will haunt newcomer Mazenod and remind them that there is a genuine home ground advantage at Essendon to the tune of 15 points.

enough for Parade to sneak home by 9 points . $DiSOB travel to Brighton in their first major test of the year and will find it a difficult assignment to toss the Tonners, but I think they can win by 15 points. change in weather and ground conditions meant that all matches were on an even level from th e first bounce . There was some first round form to go on but overall, all clubs expected to run out winners . After two rounds, only St . Kilda South Caulfield, St . Kevins and Thomastown remain unbeaten, whilst Marcellin, Old Mentonians and Old Geelong are extremely keen to have a win . Correspondent John Brustman reported on a sensational match at Bulleen between the Jackers and the Marcellin Eagles . A '<:,lf time lead of 40 points to the Eagles should have been enough, but an attack of the "Eaglewobbles" and a sensational Ajax commitment saw 15 goals kicked after half time by the victors, to a paltry 5 goals by the Eagles . What was said at half time Jackers? Do you have a Ted Hopkins or a Barassi in the background? Coach Rod Morgan must have been delighted with the effort of big Jason Fieldman in the ruck and the super form of the Goldgert twins, Brian and Phillip . David Marks and Tim Bursztyn also provided a focus up forward that could not be countered by the Eagles . Dave Waters was a consistent contributor for Marcellin . At Kooyong, Rovers an d SKOBS lined up for a match expected to be an even tussle . SKOBS took an early lead and built on it during the second and third quarters, SKOBS surer ball handling in the heavy conditions appeared to be the difference between the sides . "Jungle Jim" Macey took on Michael Fletcher in the ruck, both being excellent contributors. SKOBS were well served around the packs by "Bomber" Burden, while Denver Artz was superb in the centre for the Rovers. "Iceman" Morgan was a sensation in the back pocket for SKOBS and delivered the ball to perfection, Drpw Anderson on the wing for Rovers put in a most serviceable performance, only to see the SKOBS defence in control for most of the day, Damien Ryan, up forward with 9 goals for SKOBS, was on fire .

The Thomastown Bears did not quite have a picnic against St Bede's Mentone Tigers but put in a most serviceable performance to turn around an early lead by the Tigers and go on for a most comfortable win . Evergreen Tony Fellows playing his 300th game for the Bears, led the way from the centre . Last year's VAFA "D" Section's Best and Fairest winner, Tony was again a credit to himself and to his club . 1 hope all at Thomastown appreciate Tony's efforts and achievements . Up forward Capeci and Colosimo were very effective for the Bears, whilst the Tigers had good players in Brendan Beasley, Joe Recupero, Bob Bilos an d Jason Selby. Congratulations to Blair Hutchinson (100 games) and Anthony Walsh (50 games) on the milestones today . 6

At Packer Reserve the Saints went on their winning way in conditions describe d by Paul Howard as tropical . The game started at a frenetic pace with "Doc" Neeson and the "Carrot Heads", the MeGaw brothers feeding the ball with monotonous regularity into the forward line . The Saints set up a early lead but the Panthers fought back with 4 unanswered goals in the third term to leave the game in the balance at lemon time. With "Sink" Gardner a focus up forward, and Brendan Jackson holding big Adam at full back, the Saints were able to draw clear for a comfortable win . For the P anthers, "Rowdy" Maguire, "Nocky", "Stroudy" and "Aussie" were best . For the 0 Ms in the early game, Steve Flaskis bombed 9 goals 8 behinds to serve notice on selectors to keep an eye on form in the 2's . At Whitefriars, the home side led from the first minute of play. With Paul Coghlan and Anthony Carbone in charge, the Friars led by 14 points at half time . The OGs fought back through Howell, Tom Paul and Aaron Teelow to turn the game around and lead by 15 points early in the last quarter. Peter O'Brien an d Mark Robinson up forward took over in the last part of the match to put the Friars in front at siren time. OGs, how about some goal kicking practice! Over 2 weeks, 19 goals, 38 behinds reveals a weakness . REVIEW - ROUND 3

The Rovers must improve to beat the "in form" St Kilda South Caulfield . I'm tipping the Saints by 38 points in a match that will be a real "C" Section challenge for Rovers . The Panthers and Friars clash will depend on the ability of the Friars defence to hold the OMs big forwards . OMs form so far has not been too bad according to my reports, so I'll tip them by 29 points . OGs take on the TT Bears . This scribe being a Sydney Swans man is always looking for a turn up . OGs are saying "something will click soon" . Maybe this week! OGs by 9 points . St . Bedes Mentone Tigers are home to the Eagles who will be in for a torrid time . Marcellin will be on fire and looking for a big victory . The Eagles should prevail by 22 points. SKOBS and Ajax clash on the wide Righetti Oval . No questions will be asked and no quarters will be given in what promises to be a torrid encounter . My selection - SKOBS by 14 points margin at siren time . CORRESPONDENTS - 5 .30 pm Monday on 9889 9014 .

Well done this week fellas . All club reports on time . ~D THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

D SECTION by Ken Bremne r

r"_71he "Stark Naked" truth of the matter i s that. . . . . . . . Oh what a fool I am, or as our very own Sue Anderson said, an idiot! So Monash beat Beaumaris and yours truly has to subject himself to ridicule . If nothing else the occasional 'dare' makes for good reading if not for good action (when it fails to come off) . Is it too premature to suggest that the 'bubble' has burst at both the Leo's and Bayside Dwellers? Will Kew and Uni Reds be able to fight their way out of the 'dreaded' zone even this early in the season? Red Devils going along quite nicely so to Old Camberwell whilst Caulfield Grammar and Southbank crack their Ist win . In the case of the latter, at the expense of St Johns who were very gritty in defeat . Give it another month (4 rounds) and the picture will certainly be taking shape ! ROUND 2 REVIEW ( 20 APRIL) At 'Pitcher Park' in very sloppy conditions and a strong crosswind the home team outslogged the visitors (Uni .Reds) to 1/2 time to lead comfortably by 32 pts which could've been much more had they not wasted opportunities . In the 3rd stanza Parkside coasted but Uni . couldn't take advantage and in the last the 'Parkers lifted the tempo and finished resolutely to score by 9 large . MVP's for Parkside were McNamara . Matkaris, Moodie and Tessari . To use racing terminology, the 'Gordon Barnard' reserve registered about an '8' on the penotrometer for the clash between Old Camberwell an d St Leo's. Neither team could gain any real ascendancy with the biggest margin being the winning one (14 pts) . The fate of the game was in the balance until 10 mins . before full time when it appended several St Leo's whilst players tired. The 'Wells' scored 3 quickies and. MVP's Leo's got I back they fell in arrears by 14 pts for Old Camberwell were Harvey an d Williams and the Match Committee for making the 'smart' moves at the right time, whilst for St Leo's O'Mera, Darcy, Dinney and Cozza . Monash Blues came out all guns firing to lead by 4 majors at quarter time against the lethargic Beauma ris . The 'Baysiders" got their act together in the second to the extent they held a slender lead at the long break . Championship quarter saw the teams go goal for goal until just shy of 3 qtr time . The 'Blues edged 2 snags ahead from which point in time went on with the 'job' to register a very comfortable victory by 45 pts. therefore relegating me 'starkers' to the mud at a time and venue to be negotiated! Best for Monash were Paul 'Bones' White with 6 twins, ' Chopper' Newman at CHB and 'Crazy' Anderson .

Cauifie1d Grammarians Ist qtr intensity set up their comfortable 80 pt win over Kew. Grammars running game was too much for the 'Brown and Golds' and their continual winning of centre bounces made it easy pickings for the forwards . Brent such as Andrew Will and Steve Amiet Baxter and Hayden Vella were others who worked tirelessly for Grammar .

Likewise at Yarra Park it was the 1st half that set up Southbanks victory over St Johns . Leading by 9 goals at the long break the 'Bankers' failed to capitalise and to the 'JOCS' credit they fought back strongly to outscore the home side in the remaining half . Better players for Southbank were 'Spider' Elkington, Simon Melic an an d Ben Hodgson . ROUND 3 REVIEW (27 APRIL) St Leo's V Caulfield Grammar - Definitely St Leo's best chance yet to register their lst 4 pointer for the season. Whilst Grammars win last week was full of merit the Leo *s quality of opposition in rounds I and 2 was far superior and without winning their performances have been solid enough to suggest to me that at home they'll get spoils by a lazy 6 big ones . Kew V Uni . Reds - Nothing flash about the form of either but barring the 'draw' one will emerge victorious . At home I'll give the nod to the 'Brown and Gold' to salute by 3 large . Parkside V Southbank - Nothing like a pleasant Saturday venture to 'Pitcher Park' when the 'Red Devils' have got their tails up . Taking a line through the form of opposition that each of these sides have met, the visitors (Southbank) appear to be at least on a par . Sports book would be quoting about 5 to 4'on' both of them so I'll let loyalty get in the way of better judgement and select Southbank in the thriller by 7 pts . St Johns O .C .'s V Monash Blues - Absolutely, positively no 'dares' against the 'Blues' this week nor for that matter the 'JOCS'. Lots to like about the Monash boys form, however St Johns are a very gritty and committed outfit, capable, especially on their own track of inflicting defeat when least expected . In an upset, St Johns by 13 pts . (Small compensation for what punishment the 'students' will have or intend to dish(ed) out to me) . Camberwell V Beaumaris - The 'Wellers' to hostOld the 'Bayside Dwellers" who most certainly will be smarting over their defeat at the hands of Monash Blues . The Camberwell wagon just rolls on very nicely indeed . Away from home I just can't see Beaumaris turning their fortunes around in a week whereas I can predict the 'Wells' to keep on keeping on and remain undefeated . Old Camberwell by 24pts . 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 199 6

Club Scribes - Don't forget the telephone calls and/or fax messages on Mondays to ; Tele : 9810 3370 Fax: 9810 3251 by 5 :00 pm . Thanks heaps ! GUEST TIPSTER - TOM BRAIN

The Brain is back. Thanks KB for the chance to be guest tipster in the D-Generation this week, it's a long way away from A Section, but here goes . St Leo's have not really set the world on fire yet, but are a good side while the Fields with new coach are still feeling their way. The long Voyage will not help the home side to win . The battle of the cellar dwellers should see Kew record a victory at home . Gee Kenny the next three get tough. The Devils have done no wrong while the Bankers are traditionally slow starters . I have a healthy respect for both sides but it's been dry this week so even at Parkside your boys will win . After your sojourn to M onash I hope the boys can concentrate on the football because if they can they will be just a bit classy for the JOCS . Beauty appear to be having trouble adopting to the higher grade, the loss of King and Slim Whilta would not help while the Wells under my old school mate and Banyule legend Martin Legge continue to prosper and will maintain their winning ways .

E T SECTION by Barry Hickey

~ Easterners can be certain of a least one thing this ~season, there's no such thing as a certain winner . While Aquinas an d St Mary's again won impressively , the Porkers 9 goal defeat of Yarra Valley, the Turtles authoritative victory over Old Carey, even the draw between Eley Park and Richmond Central, all come under the heading of "unexpected" . If this continues, don't put your money on this scribe in any tipping contest, and gear yourself up for a nail biting resolution of the final four make-up . And to complicate things further, the dry ground capabilities of the teams remain untested, but then perhaps there aren't going to be any dry grounds this year. ROUND 2 REVIE W

Aquinas were too strong for Bulleen Cobras after halftime with the game fairly even up to that stage . Sean Flynn kicked three goals from the wing for the Blooders, Kirky Van Kirk Hoven an d John Knights were also prominent especially in the last half . Eley Park an d Richmond Central fought out a desperate draw, which might leave the clubs with an empty feeling on the day, but at the end of the year those two points could mean a difference between a finals berth and not . For the Sharks, David Bowen, was a one man rugby serum over the ball all day, Marty Hook marked well in the conditions, an d Adam Lenarcic again was a rock at full back . Bi lly Katells, whether its full forward or in the ruck was in everything for Centrals, as were Keiran Tapley, Cameron Warne and Frank Bove. Old Carey couldn't get their act together against Matt Ryan's bustling young Eltham Co llegians, in fact, at times the C's didn't seem to know what show they were in, let alone minor details such as what roles they were playing . The Turtles heled sway in clearances from the centre, manned up, and were generally harder running and more purposeful than the disappointing C's . Cam Campbell, Hedgie Hickey and Nick Eve rtt were the most focused of the C's . The Turtles half backs, and on-ballers managed to stand out in a very even performance. A very determined Chirnside Park caused a real shock with a 55 point win over Yarra Valley, thereby making nonsense of my prediction of a 7/8 goal win to Yarra by a stunning victory of their own . Chirnside gained an early break of 5 goals and were never headed . Half forward, Mark Pemberton was back to his 1994 best with 6 majors, and ruck rover, Justin Carusi provided immense drive all round the ground . And think about this, the Parkers didn't have Vinni Piccioli or Brian Pedler on the field! Yarra's cause wasn't helped by some late withdrawals, and they were well served by stalwarts Fraser McVean an d Brad Peak, but it was the Parkers' Day .

10

Swinburne University was unable to contain the St Mary's machine in th e L last quarter, when the Saints slammed on 8 goals nil , but until then it was a good contest . House, at half forward, plus Watson an d B .Stewart on the backline shone for the Saints, who are looking a much better unit than last year. PREVIEW OF ROUND 3 Bu lleen Cobras play Eley Park at Koonung Park in what should be a very keen tussle . The Sharks have clearly demonstrated they are going to be strong competitors this season, and even though the Cobras play their ground extremely well, the Sharks may be just ahead at the siren. Richmond Central host Old Carey at the Kevin Bartlett with each needing the win, though at least Central have a couple of points on the board . Both sides are taking some time to settle in and even though the C's have tremendous potential on paper, on their current form they will not be able to hold Central, who should win by 2/3 goals . Eltham Co llegians meet Chirnside Park in what could be a pointer for the subsequent composition of the final four . The young, hard running Turtles will take the game right up to the Parkers, but the latter are showing signs of their 1994 form, and their experience should bring them out winners by 2/3 goals. And listen Parkers, you've proven me wrong twice so far, don't make me look a total idiot by doing it three out of three ! Yarra Valley and St Mary's clash in the match of the day, with Yarra anxious to atone for last week's shock loss, and the Saints equally keen to continue their winning streak . The Saints beat Chirnside Park by as much as the latter defeated Yarra last week, and on that basis should be favoured to take this one out, but I don't know that it is that simple . Yarra use Domeney Reserve to best advantage, and that factor may be the difference in the end, but only after a titanic struggle . Yarra Valley by a few points. Aquinas will be too strong for Swinburne University at home, where they should post a comfortable win . Swinburne was not disgraced against the Saints last week, keeping in touch for three quarters only to be run over in the last, so a victory is not far away, but not today. RESERVES winners should be: Bulleen Cobras, Old Carey, Chirnside Park, Yarra Valley and Aquinas . Correspondents the Monday contacts are 9547 9144 and fax 9547 7764 .

At the Postage Stamp, the Magpie Machine continued on its merry way when it outscored the Newland Coburg boys in every quarter en route to an emphatic 100 point victory . Best for West Brunswick were Angus Hamilton, new boys Drews, Wi ll iams and Thompson, while full-forward Rohan Eastway assumed control of the E Central goalkicking ladder by booting 9 goal . For Newlands, best included Get Wrecked Keppel an d Fussy Fennessy . At the Home of Bocce, little separated North Brunswick and Old Westbourne just prior to halftime . However, three goals in time-on during the second term tipped the scales in North's favour and in the third quarter the home side slammed on nine goals to revive the Warriors' horror memories of the corresponding visit in 1995 . North ultimately finished up easy 81 point victors, silencing early season knockers that they were a spent force in 1996 . Best for the losers were Bi lly 'Baroo' Barini and Glenn Robson who finished with six goals from HFF, while my Warrior correspondent reported that the pre-season honeymoon of North veteran Craig' Sly' Fox had not diminished his finishing power, as evidenced by his bag of 5 goals . Thornbury Cougars first home game in the VAFA did not prove to a pleasant experience, as the visiting University Blacks took no prisoners on the way to a crushing 151 point victory . The Cougars are battling to adapt to the quick running style of Amateur football . but were pleased with the efforts of Roy Lincoln, Remzel Buzesla and Robbie Bruno who battled hard against the overwhelming odds . Appalling conditions for this stage of the season did not stop a titanic struggle being fought out between La Trobe University and Old Essendon Grammarians at Bundoora . OEG established a handy two goal break kicking with the tide in the first term. However, with Brendan Sheedy dominating a wing and Ben Haywood providing options up forward, the Trobers rallied to take a 5 point lead to the main break . A scuffle late in the second quarter left OEG with 17 men for most of the second half, but like all good sides OEG dug deep and after trailing by 10 points during the third quarter, the Grammar boys, led by Hex in the ruck and Cappa on the ball, were able to rally and record a meritorious 7 point win . Best for the winners included O'Brien, Capodiferro and Leigh, while Mick Napier, Sheeds 12

ed to a comfortable if unimpressive 7 goal margin at full time . Best for the winners were 1st gamer Diamond David Lee up from the U19's, Luke 'Killer' Grokowski, DJ Damon Grieve an d Grant 'Hickey' Case. PREVIEW - ROUND 3 At Park Street, there will be no room for faint hearts when the boys from West and North Brunswick lock horns. North Brunswick rebounded with great character last week but I suspect that the Magpie Machine has been waiting for this day for about two months now and as such will not be keen to let their opportunity for respect slip . West Brunswick to announce their arrival as an E Central power by 15 points. At Hoppers Crossing, Westbourne will field a depleted line-up courtesy of an ill-timed post season cricket trip when they face Thornbury. However, the Warriors should still have too much fitness and talent for the Cougars and hence record a comfortable ten goal win . At Melbourne Uni, the Blacks host fellows students La Trobe in a game in which they will be keen to show past players/officials in attendance they can rekindle the glory days of yesteryear. The Trobers' playing stocks are on the improve as evidence by the Reserves shock win over reigning premiers OEG last week but the improved depth may not be enough to cope with the explosive running game of the Blacks . Uni Blacks by 19 points . Match of the day is at East Keilor where unbeaten sides Old Essendon an d Williamstown CYMS clash . I have seen both sides in the past two weeks but it is hard to line them up given the conflicting match conditions in which they faced La Trobe . A big key to the result will be whether Willi plays its full contingent of promising U19's in the seniors, while for OEG injuries and suspension could have an impact . I'm going to select OEG purely because its at home OEG by 4 points . Finally, at the Postage Stamp, a battle royal is expected when Newland Coburg and UHSOB seek their victory for the season . UHSOB showed a marked improvement in their loss to Willi CYMS and a continued upward trend this week should allow them to snatch their first win . UHSOB by 17 points . Wonderful turnout at "Nugget" Stephens' funeral last Friday week . We were all left with a memorable last impression of "Nugget", courtesy of his son Deryk, who remarked that "Nugget's" marriage was always a little like Princess Diana's three-way marriage - the two of them and the Old Geelong Football Club!! # # # # # #

Talking about scribes photos last week it appeared as if there was only two sections who were hardly done by. In the Under 19 section either the scribe has been holidaying in Bali too long or the photo was of poor quality, and what about E Central poor old scribe came up a bit rusty . Maybe bette r luck today. ##### # For those who missed out on reading the D Section column last week we will inform you that our scribe Ken Bremner will be subject to Heado, the Professor, Koopy, Rogo and the boys dragging KB through the mud at Monash after they knocked over Beaumaris last weekend . Although it is to be on training night an attempt will be made to keep you al l

informed on this 'dearth' of readable information . What do you reckon Professor? ###### St . Kevins AFC being 50 years old this season organised a huge function last weekend . Only the rain played havoc with the luncheon . No not like the AFL Centenary Ball, but rather it forced a ground change so the luncheon still took place albeit at St . Kevins College, while the SKOBS and Rovers were battling it out at Righetti Oval . A luncheon guest commented that the luncheon was great but the white seagulls were far too good for the grey seagulls on the day. Who said the weather doesn't interrupt the football? ### .## Oh and by the way we were almost back to 199 5 about June last weekend, with the match of the day MHSOB and Bulleen-Templestowe being transferred from EP . With no matches at all last weekend and the hope of fine weather over the last week hopefully the EP lake will not reform too regularly this season and matches can once again return to the "Home of Amateur Football ."

SOUTH SECTIO N by Damien Batey

aving reflected on last week's results, it appears as if there are many sides that are keen to mak e a lasting impression on the E South competition by having a big year in 1996. Leading the way are the remaining four undefeated sides : Peninsula, Salesian, St . Pats and Monash Gryphons . Whilst fortunes are not won or lost in the opening rounds, the importance of winning early games could be crucial for all sides later in the season . REVIEW - ROUND 2

The resurrection of last year's wooden spooners Monash Gryphons continued last week after their crushing 60 point defeat of Monash Whites . When these two arch rivals met at Clayton in heavy conditions, it was a more determined Whites that overthrew the Gryphons . Bursting out of the blocks with a five goal start in the first term, the Gryphons were able to maintain a steady lead for the rest of the match . With a makeshift forward line that was clearly missing the likes of O'Brien and Moody who was injured early, the Gryphons were wasteful in front of goal. They soon consolidated however, when Kitchen helped the Gryphons find the goals, and Wells took control of centre half forward . Khoury and O'Doherty were fed by their ruckman Grady, to form a winning midfield . The Gryphon backline, lead by Ryan worked relentlessly to hold the Whites to a minimal amount of scoring. For the Whites, the loss marked a disappointing start to the season, especially considering their meagre four goals against the Gryphons. Salesian continued its winning run when it handed out a 69 point drubbing to Power House . In a hard and physical match in trying conditions, Salesian were decisive victors against a renowned opposition . For Salesian, Simon Sutherland played with conviction on the wing, where his great marking and kicking of 5 goals made for a great spectacle . A determined defence, supported by Roachy and Cavanagh proved to be invaluable, whilst Johnny Brennan was uncompromising in his tagging role . For Power House . Missaglia battled hard in the middle as did Evans and Senior in the backline . Phelan also contributed at centre half forward, where he booted 3 goals. In the biggest win of the rcund, Peninsula posted no less than 40 goals in theii 214 point routing of Glenhuntly . The match was a debacle for Glenhuntly, who are struggling already to keep their heads above water . But for Peninsula, it was a goal kicking extravaganza with the welcome return of Warne-Smith at full forward who bagged 11, the Pirates were well on their way to posting a sizeable score. Most of the remaining 29 goals were shared b y 18

several Peninsula players, who played an imposing game with an effective forward set up . Cam Landry was again in the thick of things with his best on ground performance, although the plaudits were shared amongst the whole Peninsula side . Things certainly look grim for Glenhuntly, who need to re-group and try to show some improvement against St . Pats when it plays host to them today . Another side to record a definitive victory last week was St. Pats when it took on Elsternwick at Southern Road . An undermanned Elstemwick side, succumbed to the fitter and faster Vultures who had the Wicks measure throughout the day . In a scrappy game of football, St . Pats won most of the play in the first quarter, but were unable to fully utilize their opportunities, missing some relatively easy goals from set shots . After quarter time, the Vultures kicked on to set up their win . The unfortunate loss of Karl Gurtler early in the match was the only disquieting moment for St Pats, who had winning players on every line . The Vultures were led by another purposeful effort from centre half back Matt Cosgrove, who was reinforced by the dashing Dave Perrin. Prosser was valiant in the ruck, as was Mitchell Grant who played a serviceable game . For Elsternwick, ever reliable skipper Leigh Murphy chipped in all day, as did Jamie Ward . The Wicks can look forward to some of their senior players returning to the fold, to help bolster the sides successes in future weeks. In the final match of the round, further woes were endured to the start of ANZ Albert Park's season, as they went down to Oakleigh . After a strong first quarter by the Krushers, ANZ fought back in the second term to be within striking distance at half-time . After half-time, Oakleigh took a stranglehold on the game and kicked away to a 32 point win . It was an important win for the Krushers, as it was their first for the season. For the Zedders, Matt "Sam" Malane was effective at half forward, and Chris "Tipper" Walkley worked hard in the centre. Few other ANZ players were consistent all day, with the exception of Jamie Flentgar in the ruck . PREVIEW - ROUND 3

The match of the round this week, takes place when the new and improved Monash Gryphons meet with the in form Salesian . Both sides are undefeated and placed at prominent positions of the ladder . Monash will have the opportunity to show just how much they have improved against good opposition

0

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 199 6

today, but Salesian may have enough versatility in their forward line to win by a small margin . Power House, who are recovering from last week's big loss, take on Peninsula who are in scintillating form . Although Power House have the home ground advantage, it seems unlikely that they will have Peninsula's measure . Ailing Glenhuntly must be cautious today when they go into battle with St . Pats. Glenhuntly could be rueing the season ahead after their demoralising 40 goal loss in round 2 . Meanwhile, the Vultures are travelling well, with several players fighting for selection in an undefeated side. Elsternwick could have some familiar faces returning to their side this week, in time for the clubs' clash with Oakleigh. The Krushers, on an even ,,,vin/loss balance have a tough match against the Wicks who are hosting the encounter . This should be a tough and physical match, but at the end of the day oakleigh should pick up their second victory . In the final match of the round, both Monash Whites and ANZ Albert Park have a good chance of getting a much needed win on the board . Both sides have found the going pretty tough thus far, however favour should be placed on ANZ, who at times were able to take it up to Oaldeigh last weekend .

100 GAMES - I;iARK CANAVAN

Salesian previous Best and Fairest winner Mark Canavan celebrates his 100th game today . Mark has excelled as a running wing/half forward for Salesian, being a handy mark and kick in front of goals as well . Salesian wishes its captain all the best on his 100th and on his new "defensive" role on the ground . **** *

The first event of the Elsternwick 90th year celebrations is tonight at the Elsternwick Bowling club (Glenhuntly Road) : See Rob Grandemange or Pat Mahony for details . *t** *

SPORTS STRAPPING & FIRST AID

CLUB XV111 North & South by Norm Nugent

' ound 2 results, which saw my success rate ri se . .to 75%, revealed that while some sides hav e improved on previous form, others who have been leaders now find themselves at the foot of the already interesti ng ladders . REVIEW OF ROUND 2 . NORTH

Last season's runners-up, Hawthorn Citizens, showed the newcomers Old Essendon Grammarians what the section standard is really like . Even at home, Old Essendon Grammarians were overwhelmed by the huge margin of tone hundred and forty-seven points after a very one sided match . Despite having more scoring shots, former leaders Kew went down to a more accurate Therry by eight points . St Bernards, despite inaccuracy up forward, were able to defeat an evidently improved Collegians by seven points . North Old Boys fall from a position of ascendancy was illustrated by their inability to kick a goal and their consequent one hundred point defeat by Old Ivanhoe Grammarians in their first match in Club XVIII football . Old Ivanhoe fielded a cosmopolitan side of young and more mature players, some of whom are no longer nippy around the packs . Their best players were Marty Stewart, David Supa, Kim Ho and full forward John Valiothis . Marcellin had the bye .

form so far in 1996, Hawthorn Citizens should be largely untroubled to win. The match of the round will be that between Therry and Collegians at Oak Park . Visitors find difficultly on the J.P. Fawkner Oval and Collegians, on their debut there will prove no exception . Further the Costello trained Theriy are proving to be no joke . Their win last Saturday at Kew provided more evidence of their win last Saturday at Kew provided more evidence of their improvement . Therry should win well and so dent Collegians newly found confidence . St Bernards should build percentage and sharpen their fonvard work against North Old Boys, whose 1996 form has not nearly approached the standard required for victory . Associated Grammar Schools rivals Rfarcellin an d Old Ivanhoe meet at Bulleen . As 1 have no real gauge o the quality of Old Ivanhoe's form last week, I suspect the improvement by Kennedy's Commandoes will see Marcellin record a rare victory today . Old Essendon Grammarians have the bye . SOUTH Likely finalists, even at this stage, Old Xaveri ans

Leaders Old Xaverians again revealed their skill leve l when they defeated the combined Old Brighton - Bloods by the convincing margin of sixty - seven points . De La Salle posted a victory for their club when they defeated Old Melburnians by eleven points . Old Geelong, although giving evidence of improvement, kicked themselves out of victory over Mazenod, whose more prudent and accurate use of the ball gave them victory by five points. St Kevins, in a big form reversal, easily defeated VUT by forty - one points. Old Scotch had the bye . REVIEW OF ROUND 3 NORTH

and De La Sa ll e meet at Toorak Park. Although both sides have done all asked of them in 1996, I believe Old Xaverians, who have been very impressive, will record another victory today . Old Melburnians and Old Geelong meet on the new Oval 1 at Albert Park . Old Geelong inspired by a Lemon injection, have shown evidence of improvement whereas Old Melbumians haven't yet been in a winning position in 1996 . Peter, I am on your band wagon as I expect Old Geelong to win . St Kevins travel to Central Reserve to play Mazenod, who seem to have declined in power this season. St Kevins, who have played well to date could win . However, at home I select Mazenod. Reigning premiers Old Scotch travels way out west to play VUT . Despite the Scotch dislike of travel away from the security of the city I firmly believe they will win in the "wild west" today . In Stevens speak the amalgamated Old Brighton Bloods have the bye.

Neighbours Hawthorn Citizens and Kew, whose jumpers clash, meet at the Victoria Road Reserve . On

Knitwear Two weeks in and Cie season begins to take shap e

and Beardsley were instrumental in the win, and for Yarr a Valley none tried harder than Morris and Tyshing. Division ( 2) White In a battle of the previous weeks winners Warringal hung on in a close one to defeat Old Camberwe ll. The sides were within striking distance of one another all day and in the end (4) goals to O'Connor and a great display by J . Anderson saw Warringal get over the line . Old Geelong hosted St . Leos at Como Park and got away to a flying start and were never headed . Wallace-Smith booted (5) for the victors, with the Smith brothers being valuable contributors for St . Leos Wattle Park Emmaus . In what was reported as a terrific game of football Williamstown defeated Uni Blacks eventually, after being three goals down at one stage . In a tight last quarter it was Williamstown's running players such as Mator and Matthews who proved to be the difference . St . Kevins proved that the bye can keep you fresh as Owen Hourigan's boys went berserk against BulleenTemplestowe . Marusic finishing with (14) goals to his name and good players in Dollman an d Finch running where they liked . For the Bullants Gannas and Pappadopoulos were excellent players .

REVIEW OF LAST WEEK'S MATCHES Division One

St . Bernards headed Old Paradians at every change apart from the first with Ballerin and Davis being consistent players for St . Bernards, an d Domingo booting (5) majors. Uni . Blues were behind all day except when it counted, and by holding Old Xavs scoreless in the last quarter ran out victors . Eastaugh and Beltrame were prominent players for the Blues. De La Sall e helped themselves to a big win at home to Therry, with Flowerday and Harper doing as they pleased . Co llegians were not in the hunt from the beginning with Old Melburnians setting up the big win with a (9) goal to (1) first half . For OM's Bennett kicked (5) and Bains an d Cloke did as they pleased . AJAX proved too strong for Nort h Old Boys at home with focal points Davis and Carew up forward providing Snow and Burman with many options in what was anybody's match at half time . Division (2) Blue In a high scoring match at Murrumbeena Ormond took the points against St . Kilda Sth Caulfield. The difference being Ormond's (9) goal to (3) third quarter and a young ruckman named Finalyson . Caulfield Grammarians hosted Beaumaris and even the unfamiliar grounds at the school campus could throw the Beaumaris boys, who went on their merry way, with Boctor booting another ( 8) and Whitaker and Wadham prominent . Old Brighton gave Monash Blues a terrible time at Brighton winning by a whopping (21) goals . Monash Blues had triers in Henderson and MeIvor . Hampton Rovers began well but were overrun in the final thfee quarters by a strong and committed Mazenod . Nelson finished with (4) majors for the Rovers, while Young, Di Scala and Riley were valuable contributors for Mazenod . Division (2) Re d Aquinas hosted Old Paradians (2) at North Ringwood and played consistent team football throughout to win comfortably in the finish . For the victors Masciti and Heveron were key players . Old Scotch an d Whitefriars fought out a close match until half time, when Old Scotch through Andrews (4 goals) booted (5) second half goals to (1) to win easily in the end. Old Carey took on Marcellin with both sides having had big wins the previous week . Old Care i began the better and were never headed . Murphy anc Detarczynski were prime movers for the winners . Old Trinity played Yarra Valley at Bulleen in extremely wet conditions and still managed to kick a large tally. For Old Trinity Burrows

THE

PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division On e

Old Paradians will have their work cut out against Uni Blues today, but if Steve's boys take too long to start again they may find Old Paradians too far ahead to peg back. Uni Blues if on their game . Old Xavs host De La Sa lle at Toorak Park and with Old Xavs on the rebound and De La Salle having a big win last week, I can see De La Salle continuing their winning form . Collegians travel to Glenroy where Therry will be fired up to win . Geoff Porter will take nothing less this week and Therry will win comfortably. Old Melburnians take on North Old Boys at the Junction Oval and if form is an indication OM's should be in front at the siren . St . Bernards host AJAX at home and will continue their winning streak at home . SELECTIONS : Uni . Blues, De La Salle, Therry, OM's & St . Bernards

Division ( 2) Blue Ormond after a good first up win will be too strong at home for Caulfield Grammarians who may well still be recovering from last week . Beaumaris and Old Brighton clash in a replay of last season's second-semi final . The result will be the same, with Beaumaris having too much strike power for Old Brighton . Monash Blues and Hampton Rovers will be a close match from th e

outset with any advantage being in getting a good start . Hampton Rovers proved that they could do this last week, and will be in front at the final bell today . Mazenod and Old Haileybury clash at Waverley in what will be a game of high skill and tremendous rivalry . In a pinch Old Haileybury after coming off the bye . St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield have the bye . SELECTIONS : Ormond, Beaumaris, Hampton Rovers & Old Haileybur y Division (2) Red Old Paradians host Old Scotch who after a win last week will prove too polished for Old Paradians (2) today . Whitefriars will find the going tough against a committed Old Carey line-up . Marceiiin and Old Trinity will be a ripper with both sides boasting strong forward lines and highly skilled onballers, in a toss of the coin Ivlarcellin on the rebound . In the final match Yarra Valley take on Chirnside Park at Stinton's Reserve, with Chirnside Park coming off the bye I favour them in a close match . Aquinas have the bye . SELECTIONS: Old Scotch, Old Carey, Marce ll in & Chirnside Park Division (2) White Warringal take on Old Geelong at Banyule and with both sides yet to drop a match you can be guaranteed of a terrific spectacle . In a tight match I am favouring Warringal due to a home ground advantage . Williamstown host St . Leos W /P Emmaus at Williamstown Football Ground . Williamstown will prove far too strong in the run home . De La Salle (2) host St. Kevins at Basil St . Reserve and will find it difficult to contain the St. Kevins onballers and forwards . St . Kevins to win well. Old Camberwell will prove a real handful for Brian and his boys at Balwyn, and Old Camberwell on the rebound will be too much of an ask for BulleenTemplestowe this time. Uni . Blacks have the bye . SELECTIONS : Warringal, Williamstown, St . Kevins & Old Camberwell

5 YEARS AGO - 199 1

Section commentator, Peter Lemon, had a disastrous day in Round 2, picking only one winner out of five, and thought that he'd revert to the alias he used some y ears ago "Seldum Wright" . "A" Section captains for the season were James Bennett ( Coll .), Matt Getson (Marc .), Simon Meehan (Old Hail .), Andrew Witts ( Old Melb .), Robert Fuller ( Old Scotch), Simon Ramsay (Therry), John Kanis (Uni . Blues), Mark Lowe (De La Sall e OC), Tony Egan (North Old Boys), Russell Barnes (Ormond).

Hampton Rovers saluted Dominic Devola on his 300 games. Dom's career started with the Under-19s back in 1974 . He has also won some fame in the club for operating the longest serving Pleasant Sunday morning venues around. In a high class game at Waverley Road, home team De La, after trailing Marcellin for most of the day, were too strong in the last critical 10 minutes and went away to win 22 .14 to 19 .6. Best were Mahony, Hegan, Toohey ( De La), and Gallagher, Boysen (7 gls .), Bourke ( 6 gls .) (Marc .) .

Parkside continued their good form in "B" Section when they led Old Xaverian s all day and withstood an 8 goal burst from Old Xavs . in the final term . Frank S an sonetti with 8 .8 was Parkside's best player with Panjari, Sherlock and Griffiths also good players. Closest game for the day was at La Trobe where the home team came from 7 points down at last change to beat Old Geelong by 3 points . Best were Lierson, Wilson, Cummings (Lat .) and M. Davis, J . Handbury, D. Ritchie (OG) . To quote from Umpires' Corner, the game was umpired by the 1991 version of the tortoise and the hard, Belcher/Maebus . 10 YEARS AGO - 1986 "B" Section coaches we re Kevin Morrison (Fawkner), John Wise (Parkside), Mark Saran (Old Brighton), Andrew Ristrom (Old Melburnians), Gerard Sho ll y (Old Paradians), John Turner (Old Xaverians), Frank Melican (St Bernards OC), Vince LaRagy (St Kilda CBCOC), Bernie Dunn (Therry) and Nevill e Taylor (Uni . Blacks) . Senior B&F in 1981 and 1984 Adrian "Twinge" Hunter played his 150th game for UHSOB . In a high scoring game, Bull .-Temp's accuracy won the day against Uni. Blues, 21 .11 to 15 .9 . Best were Palmer ( 6 gls), Asdagi, Keen an , Shallard (7 gls) and Williams, Tyquin (6 gis) and Pike .

Richard Herm an (Collegians) in Under-19 Zone 2 had a day out with 15 of the team's 21 goals . It was a strange draw this year as Round 1 for A and B was again played in Round 3 . Ormond reversed their first round defeat with a 28 point victo24

ry, 18 .15 to 13 .13, against Caulfield Grammarians .

McClelland, Ston e and Nalder continued to show good form while Tobin, Petering an d Nash were Ormond's best . Fawkner ("B") made a quick recovery after losing four players suspended when they defeated Therry 22 .14 to 17 .12 . Best were M . Majerczak, Busst, Weir, Korp (7 gls) . (Fawk.) an d Ramsay, Matton, Cane (Therry) . James Garde played his 50th game with Uni . Blacks, James represented VAFA against VFA and VCFL in 1984 and was in the All Australian intervarsity side in 1985.

15 YEARS AGO - 198 1 In the first "EP" game for the season, Ormond maintained their undefeated record for the season with a 14 point win, 9 .12 to 7 .10, against U. Blacks. Best were McAsey, Andrew, Parisi (Ormond) and R. Curt is, S. Costello, Wines (U. Blacks) .

State Bank saluted milestones for three club stalwart - 200 games to Allan Pitts and 150 games to Mick Scott and Nevi lle Evans . "B" Section coaches were Bob MacDonald (Caul . Gramm .), Bruce Ferguson ( Coll .), Sabby Ciavala (Fawkner), Dennis Irvin (Geelong), Terry Hayes (Kew), Dennis Flett (Monash Blues), Bill Browne (0 . Brighton), Cliff Hart (0 . Paradians) . Who coached Ivanhoe and U. Blues? In an "A : Section "thriller", AJAX went down by 1 point to De La, 13 .20 to 14.15 . First quarter inaccuracy, 1 .10, cost AJAX the game . Best were Bluzer, Weiner, Faym an (AJAX) . De La "missed copy deadline" .

Coburg ("D") kicked highest senior score for the round, 32 .15 to Old Trinity's 11 .13 . Starring were P . Hackney, Knight, Burgin (Cogurg) and Watsford, Bunting, Robinson (0 . Trinity) . 20 YEARS AGO - 1976 MHSOB kicked 17 .15 (117) in "B" Section but still went down by 53 points to Caulfield Grammari an s for whom Butcher ( 11 goals), Fletcher an d Tootell were best.

De La Salle ("A") held off a strong final term challenge by U . Blacks, 5 .3 to 2.2, to win by "the solitary", 13 .12 to 13 .11 . Stars were Lyons, Groves (4) and Butler for De La . Old Scotch ("B"), streaked away from Iv anhoe in the second term, kicking 9 .6 to I . I . and won the game, 20 .14 to 16.11 . Best were Marx (5), Tallent, Bowden, Sherwen (5) (0 . Scotch) and Stredwick, Renshaw, Jones (Ivanhoe) .

Old Halley ("C") kicked 9 .6 in the final term to Hampton Rovers' 1 .3 to win convincingly by 42

points . Best were Code, Coc ks, Rouris (0 . Hailey) and Rowston, Huckett, Bird (H . Rovers) . [David Code went on to become a renowned country footballer and captained the combined VCFL against both AAFC and VAFA, NR) 25 YEARS AGO - 197 1

it was 1970 Grand Final all over again when Caulfield Grammarians held off a strong finishing bid by Coburg to win by 2 points - same magic and same circumstances as the last Grand Final . Atchinson, Clark and Lester continued their fine form for Grammarians with Sullivan, Jim Sabri an d Douglas best for Coburg . Closest "B" Section game was Old Carey's 13 .19 (91) defeat of Ivanhoe 12 .18 (90) with Old Carey kicking 4 .5 to 0 .4 in the final term . Geoff "Cool" Thomas, Freeman and Richard Elliot (Old Carey) and Berry, McMahon (5) and Phillips (Ivanhoe) were the best players . UHSOB welcomed back "Nats" Nettleton after three years in Canada. Eccles (8 goals) was the star in Parkside's highscoring win over Old Geelong - 20.8 (128) to 14 .11 (95). 30 YEARS AGO - 199 6

Ivanhoe paid tribute to Russell Burt who after 240 games with the 'Hoes had been forced into retirement with a badly broken arm . "Rusty" was a member of Ivanhoe's "A" section premier team in 1956 and won an All Australian blazer in 1958.

Frank Cunin (Uni . Blacks) had been appointed coach of the team to play in Adelaide while John Wilson (Caulfield Grammarians) will be in charge of the team to go to Tasmania . MHSOB retained their place at the top of "A: Section with a sound win over Coburg, scores 15 .14 (104) to 10 .8 (68) . Best for the victors were Moll er, Trish, J . Nelson, and the losers, Warfe, Shea, Beattie . University Football Club were celebrating their centenary this year and to mark the occasion, the Inter-Varsity carnival was to be held in Melbourne . Elsternwick's Joc k Sellars chalked up 150 games with the club . 45 YEARS AGO - 195 1

Ormond last year's "A" premiers, were annihilated by Commonwealth Bank (last year's "B" Section premiers) with final scores being 17 .10 (112) to 2 .6 (18) . Hampton Rovers, 7 .14 (56) beat Ivanhoe 5 .11 (41) in a close hard fought game to stay in the "A" section four . Doug Arnold was great in the centre while Keith Embleton scored a splendid goal from the boundary . Kevin Clarke, Bill Clar ke, and Ron Rosenburg were best for 'Hoes. It was "Black Saturday" at Corio Oval for SSB when the home side Geelong scored 9 goals on the board before Bank scored their first . Matheson, ',IePhee, Ferguson, for Geelong and Bill, Gellatty and Grubb, for Bank were best .

The call went out to the troops for milestone notification and two jumped out immediately to join the "200" clu b and be highlighted in the column with their umpire profile . Name: David John D'Altera . Nickname : Balltearer. Year Commenced : 1976 Northern Metropolitan Juniors, 1979 VFA, 1985 VAFA. VAFA games: 200 in Round 2 (also attended 400 aftermatches) . Highlights: Wattle Glen Under-16 Grand Final at Whittlesea (VFA) . Umpiring in C Section 1985 . Greatest influence on career : Ross Raphael and Adrian Crawley (VFA/Northern Metro Juniors) . Neville Nash (VAFA) . Football playing career: Essendon High School ex-students Juniors in Essendon District League (complete with Geoff Blethyn-type spectacles) . Played alongside ex-VFL stars Neville Fields and Ken Roberts . Football Pet Hates : Spectators who criticise umpires from the sidelines, have never umpired, and end up complimenting you in the clubrooms . Accepting a reverse charge "STD" phone call from Ron Smith . Losing clubs that are anti-social after the game . Most memorable match: Two! Leaving the ground early in the third quarter at Skinner Reserve, Sunshine during a VFA Under-19 game for a "hollow log"! D Section game in 1985 between Preston and Bulleen United when I broke down with a cartilage injury and Alan Murphy (ex-VFL Reserve Grade) had to take over the mantle. Best Amateur Footballers seen : Vic Zanin (UHSOB), Greg Roughsedge (Uni . Reds), Paul Cliffe (VUT/FIT) . Best Umpires: Richard Simon, Wayne Hinton and Greg Hardiman . What I like about Umpiring: The spirit of friendship and support within the Umpires Association, the aftermatch and knowing I can still run a game at my age hopefully without the concern of injury or retiring to be a goalie!! ###xx :

Name : Robert Seymour . Year commenced : 1987 . Nickname : Bob . VAFA Games : 200 (today in Round 3) . Occupation: Meter Reader . Can Datsun 120Y. Words of advice to youngsters: Keep training . Football Pet Hates: Whingeing players. Hobbies/other sports : Cricket umpire, golf. Favourite food: Steak and roasts . Drink: Beer. Best Amateur Footba llers seen : Wayne Carey (St . Bernards), John Gilliam (Banyule), Rob

Lawson (Fawkner) . Best Umpires : Greg Hardiman, Darren Dalgleish . Ambition in football : Keep going for another or two. Highlight: Police escort to game 199 . x##ax #

The length of the two profiles should give all readers further insight to these two personalities . Congratulations on your achievements. x#### i

A common response in our profiles is the enthusiasm for the aftermatch and this gathering provides a great deal of material for the scribes to including in the column . Last week 'Iliomastown called on Peter Simpson to draw the raffle for the meat tray . We heard a great family BBQ on Sunday was had by all members of the Simpson clan . Was it merely a coincidence that Thomastown won on the day an d "Simmo" drew his own ticket to win the prize . ##### x The dress sense of one of our field umpires has changed dramatically since his year on the supplementary list due to studies . No longer the dirty overalls but the picture of sartorial splendour in a suit. Darren "Daggles" Dalgleish was asked "if he was the defendant?" x # x # # # It needs to be asked if Brad Noonan has recently walked under a ladder or broken a mirror inside . Last week it was noted he was KO's during a practice match and last round he broke down with a calf injury . The strange part was it was the only part of his body not bandaged. # # # x # # The shortage of Report Forms was rectified last week . All field umpires received five forms . is there any truth in the rumour that Mike Murray returned his unused forms accumulated over the last 17 years (without one report) ? The biggest talking point from last week's meeting was the way Geoff "VG" Curran stopped the new rule debate in its tracks b y Continued on Page 29 >

° ding at better tea~~-_, Players are the key Players Give positive feedback to your teammates whenever you get the chance . Simple statements like, "Good hustle", "Nice try", " Great Job", or "I knew you could do it", help to build strong, positive relationships . Be positive and supportive verbally to your fellow players, and avoid the critical, negative feedback. In other words get into the habit of saying things to your teammates that build them up, and avoid saying things that put them down . This is particularly true in adversity . Remember, everyone has the tendency to retreat into himself and protect number one when things get tough . When you're part of a team, that strategy spells trouble for you and everyone else . Work extra hard to be supportive, positive and constructive with your team in adversity . By helping them, you end up helping yourself. Training Give 100 percent effort in practice, and work hard on your weaknesses . Working hard to improve yourself and giving full effort is a powerful team unifier . When you are dedicated and committed you encourage others to do likewise by example. Never underestimate the power of your example in building team spirit. Attitude Both negativism and positivism are highly contagious. Do not be fooled into believing that your negative attitude isn't affecting your team . Negativism can spread through a team like a disease . Carefully guard what you think and say . Start an epidemic of enthusiasm and excitement in your team by being optimistic and positive.

Get your attitude and disposition right before going to practice or games . Once you arrive for play, it's often too late to adjust your attitudes . The real pro arrives with the right frame of mind, ready to play his best. Go out of your way to help teammates whenever you can . Being mutually interdependent on each other stimulates team spirit . When you help someone, they feel closer and more responsive. Individuality Be fully responsible for yourself . Do not get into the habit of blaming others for your poor performances . Blaming the coach or your teammates when things do not go well for you serves no useful purpose. Work within positive and constructive channels to produce needed changes. Blaming only serves to frustrate team harmony building efforts . Be on your own best igniter . Do not rely on others to push you from behind to keep you going . Self starters are extremely valuable team members . They often become the triggers for positive momentum . Be a model of positive energy . Communication Communicate clearly, honestly, and openly with your coach . To achieve a high level of team harmony, the communication between you and your coach must be healthy . The better you understand each other, the better your chances are of performing well . Do not forget to have ful! Being able to laugh and to loosen up a little often breaks down barriers and helps people to relax and feel closer . Remember, when you can enjoy, you can perform. "To become a champion requires a condition of readiness that causes the individual to approach with pleasure, even the most tedious practice session ." Review - Round 1

Last weekend saw the 1996 FIDA season kick off at Brunswick and Gillon Ovals respectively . At Brunswick Broadmeadows Kangas clearly outpointed Parkside in the first match, with Ringwood and Hawthorn in the next match the result was a little closer with Ringwood running out convincing winners in the end . Chadstone gave Mitcham a football lesson and did not allow them to score, and finally new team the Marlins also displayed fine football skills to clearly defeat the Magpies easily . In Bendigo on the same day Bendigo (1) defeated Keilor comprehensively, however in the second match Maribyrnong spoiled Bendigo (2)'s party by defeating them in a close match by (2) goals . Heidelberg, Karingal and Werribee all had the bye . Preview - Round 2 All matches are to be played at Elsternwick this Round except for Mitcham versus Bendigo, which is being played as a curtain-raiser to an EDFL match at Mitcham on Saturday . Due to this fact Bendigo (2) will not travel down to play on Sunday . Matches in order as drawn are as follows . Chadstone take on Heidelberg in the first match and going on last season's form Heidelberg should win in a close contest . Ringwood were drawn to play Bendigo (2), however with their senior team playing on Saturday it was not viable for the team to travel down twice on the one weekend. This match will take place and Ringwood will play Maribyrnong in what will be a battle of the two winners from last week. My tip is Ringwood by a goal . Parkside play Werribee in the third match and will struggle to defeat Werribee today. Karingal play Hawthorn and with Karingal coming off the bye and having fresher legs they should win. Broadmeadows and the Magpies clash in the final match and with a hint of last week's form Broadmeadows should win handsomely . Keilor, Bendigo (2) and Marlins all hav e the bye

All players and coaches are reminded of tomorrow night's Delegates Meeting at 7 .00pm at Elsternwick Park . On this night the players' representative group will meet also, so clubs are asked to bring along one playing member per team as well. The Marlins football team are welcomed to the competition and the players and co-ordinator Debra Dennis are congratulated on their first up win against the Magpies last weekend .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

From Thu s

Ivanhoe club for taking the time an d effort to honour a person who has done an immense amount to make the VAFA what it is today . ****** Clubs (A and B) have until April 29th to advise of

In last week's issue I published an outline of the Executive requirements in regards to the clothing to be worn by the only officials allowed on to the field of play during the playing of a game . Umpires, as of this weekend, have been asked to be particularly attentive to violations of the exact requirements in regards to this clothing. A slight amendment has been made following a submission made by the Trainers' Association - please find a display elsewhere in today's issue for up to date details . # # * # # #

Following my first issue Editorial in which i mentioned the state of the amateur game in South Australia this quaint little piece found its way over the border and into my hands . "With the strength of the Premier and Amateur Leagues, the Victorian Amateurs have shown the white flag of surrender and declined to play SA this year ." The rag? "Sportsbeat" The author? Who knows - perhaps "Deadbeat" . ##*#*# Melees are a topic really doing the rounds at th e moment. It even got the media shy General Manager a spot on 3L0's Doug Aiton show last Friday explaining the Amateur way of dealing with melees which has worked pretty well for us over a long period of time . Our way of thinking sees our umpires reporting clubs for being involved in a melee should a number of players leave their set playing positions to become involved in what was/is an incident between basically two, maybe three players. Our instruction to umpires is to - one, find a free kick to get the ball moving - this eliminates at least half of the involved players ( most players will want to chase the ball anyway) . The other umpire then is instructed to move in, warn the remaining players that unless they break immediately or continue to run in, that both clubs will be reported for being involved in a melee. Unlike the League we do not ask our umpires to name players causing, contributing to or escalating the melee . If this comes out during the course of the subsequent investigation players can be suspended or charged to appear at a further hearing . **#*** I had the pleasure last weekend to be invited to the Ivanhoe Football Club luncheon to honour club stalwart Harry Thomas who has just completed 51 years service to Ivanhoe . I appreciated the invitation and thoroughly enjoyed the lunch, which was incidentally very well MC'd by former VAFA Executive Committeeman John Miles, a long time mate of Harry's . Perhaps one of Harry's greatest achievements was the key role he played in the re-forming of Ivanhoe following the War in 1946 . Congratulations to Harry and his wife Betty and to the

dates they do not want to be drawn to play a home game at Elsternwick Park over the period May 25 to July 7 (the second section of this year's draw) . The draw for this second section will be released to clubs on May 6th . #**### Clubs are reminded that this week teamlists appear for the first time for season 1996 . With this being the case any players who do not appear on the teamlists printed in the "Amateur Footballer" and are playing in the Seniors or Under 19's this weekend need to be printed on a teamlist alteration form and exchanged at the coin toss by the captains . See display further inside this week's "Amateur Footballer" fully explaining this requirement. ***#x * With respect to teamlists clubs are reminded that the next deadline for teamlist alterations is Wednesday June 5, for the Round 10 "Amateur Footballer" . Clubs can add / delete names and sponsor's logos as they see fit . Clubs will be advised of this in writing in due course . Phil Stevens
