to become eligible during the last part of the season because we weren't able to change the rule letting these players play even when given the green light by their VFL club on a particular weekend . thout revisiting this sensitive issue the Executive tried to eliminate the rule where a VFL listed player had to (after June 30) be equal to or in credit with VAFA games played compared to VFL games played to remain "alive" for VAFA finals football. Sadly some of these players weren't required at VFL seniors or reserves level last weekend and were restricted to standing on terraces watching their beloved amateur team . Each Friday during the season I am provided with a list from the VFL indicating which players are able to play with their VAFA club over a given weekend . VAFA clubs are quickly advised as to who is available and also clubs having known list players who are not declared "available" are also told that they can't play these players even though they may be playing the day after the VAFA match, the morning of the match or simply are no t

The first weekend of the finals is arguably the most difficult weekend of the season to cater for, mad e even more difficult this season by having the first and second semi finals of both C and D sections played on the one weekend - these two sections previously played a 4 week finals series, with one semi final only on the first weekend . All of these finals (C, D, 3 E Sections and 4 under 19 Sections) plus a full round of A and B Section matches, many of which were vital games . You might say and I would agree - a recipe for great matches, cut-throat elimination games and scenes of joy and relief. All of these things did happen but unfortunately with the demand for umpires to be allocated to A and B games with the remainder spread through all our other sections possibly in some cases experienced umpires weren't on hand to assert control early on in games to set the scene for the day . Whilst this is not a criticism of the umpire quality, it is merely that on the weekend just gone the volume of games simply overtaxed the supply of available umpires . No doubt the lack of discipline demonstrated in many games will have had its sequel at last Tuesday's tribunal or upcoming investigations . rom this weekend however, the old supply and 1 demand takes over, with lesser games to be contested, the better umpires will get the appointments - also the better teams will be the ones continuing to play . A much better recipe for good football . K n highlight of the weekend was witnessing two magificent U19/1 semi finals . There certainly is something about youth, coupled with physique and ability . Young, skilled footballers are a joy to watch as they simply "go for it" without having to be restricted by physical problems associated with age and or by having played contact sport for a long time . I congratulate the De La Salle, Old Melburnians, Old Xaverians and University Blues clubs for having put the time into developing such special U19 teams - certainly a wonderful investment for the future of these clubs . The gloomy aspect for me was the report I received of the number of VFL listed players who were free and wanting to play but who were not given the opportunity

PREMIERSHIP FLAG UP FOR. GRAB S ell the jigsaw finally fell into place last week as W the jostling for finals' places over the past three weeks finished as predicted . Even a last minute two game loss of points and percentage by Collegians didn't halt their inevitable top-of-the-table status and early favouritism for the flag . Maybe the ineligibility incident could be an added sting for the Lions . Old Xaverians completed their fairy tale finish to the season winning the last nine and are nestled in comfortably behind Collegians and angling for the first back-to-back flags since the Lions achieved in it '92/93 . The groundswell of support for Xavs will see them threaten strongly for top honours . Old Melburnians defeated their rival Old Scotch for the finals berth in a tight match at the Junction Oval . The Redlegs are making a last minute dash for the flag and set to challenge even from the difficult third possie . University Blues, runner up last season, finished off Mazenod in style last week and will be buoyed up to make a good account of themselves . Three finals' appearances in '95 won't do them any harm this year . So at last the coast is clear for the finals series with only one winner to grasp the 'Adamson' artifact and it's going to be a keenly fought series ; different to '94 and '95 when OM's and Old Xavs were almost walk up starts to take top honours . Best of luck to the 84 players, coaches and the four clubs who have patiently waited since early in the year for this one last chance. But the first step is the cut throat first semi today between OM's and University Blues wi th the score at one all through the season and both sides at full strength and evenly matched . Should be a tight contest and a terrific 'prelim' warming to the main event . REVIEW

ORMOND V COLLEGIAN S It was never going to be easy for Collegians against an Ormond at Ormond in that club's last match in A Section after a distinguished 28 consecutive years at the top . Hard fought out contest early with Brock Mooney outpointed by Tim Hille with Darren Edge ll an d Brett Co llins making use of their opportunities . But courageous Anthony Wallace an d Danny Thomson scored well to head off Ormond at half time and lead by 18 points . Ormond clawed their way back into the match, but the prospect of losing top spot was enough incentive for the Lions to hold on by only 7 points . Tall Brett Jefferson impressed as did Ashley Orr and Brett Connell for the Monds. Tough work out for Collegians and the end of an era for the proud Ormond club .

DE LA SALLE V. OLD HAILEYBUR Y De La Salle finished with ten wins , sixth position and equal fourth. Same number of wins as in '95, but a spot lower on the ladder and some impressive wins throughout the year mixed with some shattering close defeats which in the end were so costly. A promising group of young players were blooded and they showed out against Old Haileybury where Tim Silvers, Mark Abrahrams an d Mathew Chun were key players in beating the Bloods. In front for most of the day, it was only the Bloods straight kicking which kept them in it . Good players were Mark Seccull and Nick Morey, but a disappointing seventh position for the Bloods after reaching second at one stage . OLD MELBURNIANS V . OLD SCOTC H It was certainly a David Strooper- led victory with the former league player booting seven out of OM's 11 goals kicked for the day . Playing at either full forward or centre half forward he was a real handful for Adam Nettleton or Stua rt Gibbs. Scotch almost drew level at one stage, but the more experienced Redlegs were over the line and a finals berth . Simon Theodore, off the bench, will be better for the run, while Peter O'Brien was a high possession getter . For the gallant Cardinals, Justin Hosking an d Stephen Hume were terrific, but it was the presence of Strooper that made all the difference . OM's another step forward with Scotch just missing out at the death knell . UNIVERSITY BLUES V . MAZENOD

Not much left in the Mazenod tank and Blues exploited every opportunity to crunch the opposition and work up some pre-finals form . They did it with ease and Adam Lennen booted 11 to head up the goal kicking for the second consecutive year . All fit and well in Bluesland an d Andrew Henderson an d Richard Vandenberg continue to do well . For the Nodders, Chris Belleville topped off a fine season and must be a contestant for B&F honours . Confidence booster for Blues and a disappointing send off for Mazenod . OLD XAVERIANS V . ST . BERNARDS Xavs had to really extend themselves in the last qua : ter to shake off a persistent St . Bernards who kicked seven straight points in the last quarter to Xavs 4 .5 for the home side to win by 26 points . Dominic Berry (6 goals) continues to wield enormous influence and presence up forward, but it was Adam Jones and Michael Brennan who took out top honours . For Bernards, Anthony Comito finished off a great year and the team of youngsters provide the real hopes for next year. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

1ST SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW - OLD MELBURNIANS V. UNIVERSITY BLUES

No second chances after today as these sides shoot it out for a crack at the top two . Old Melburnians have forced their way back into contention with some fine performances in recent weeks beating Collegians, University Blues and Old Scotch with injured players returning at the right time . Blues beat OM's by six goals in Round 9 during the Redlegs black days, but OM's reversed the result in Round 17 by almost four goals . Blues form has been patchy for most of the year and rarely have they put together four consistent quarters or placed their stamp on the competition at any stage . OM's started off brilliantly winning the first six and then promptly dropped the next six, but won 5 out of the last 6 to finish third . Blues' midfielders and onballers are its strengths and when playing well are hard to beat . Furphy, Worsely an d Vandenberg are accomplished players and with ruckman Gill McLachlan a dominating influence should make it hard for OM's Chris Bryan . Blues wingmen in Richard Polkinghorne and Andrew Henderson will revel across the middle and provide plenty of drive at Elsternwick Park . OM's backline has really stiffened up in recent weeks with Stuckey, Ell inghaus, Webb and Eabrey teaming together well and will make opportunities for Adam Lennen, Cavalier an d co, scarce . At the other end of the ground, OM's established forwards in Simon Bromell and David Strooper are experienced campaigners and Tom Hutchins and Toby McIntyre will have their hands full restricting OM's to a losing score . And with Ian McMullin and Andrew Thompson scouting around, there will be more avenues of attack open to the Redlegs .

On balance, OM's hit the finals series in reasonably peak form and will have more firepower to beat a committed Blues combination who just haven't performed to the maximum of their capabilities this year or been capable of kicking a winning score often enough . No, it's OM's to take another step forward and Blues to fall out first. REMEMBER WHEN

Recall those experts early in the season who predicted how the four make up would be at the end of the home and away series. Well the moment of truth has arrived and joint winners were Executive Committee members Rick Pisarski and Andrew Langford-Jones who picked the top four, but not necessarily in the right order . No cigar but , . . Club Notes : All at St . Bernards were saddened at last week's death of one of its founding committee in Fred Nathan, father of one of the club's founders and life members Peter Nathan, and grandfather of current Rese rves Coach Andrew, Condolences to all of the Nathan family.

MILSTONES De La Salle would like to congratulate Mic k

Knuppel an d Damian Toohey on reaching 150 game milestones recently . Damian has been Senior Captain ('95 &'96), U19 Premiership Captain 1987 and member of the B Section flag in 1989 . Mick has been with the club since 1983 and in this time has played in (2) Premierships A section ('85) and B Section ('89), as well as winning the U19 Competition Best & Fairest in 1983 . Injuries have robbed both players of many games and their milestones are testament to their fantastic service to the Club . All of the Committee and Supporters thank you both for your efforts over the years . Well done . jI

B motional scenes at the Melbourne High School Oval last week as the home side withstood a lat e challenge from NOBS to win by 13 points and secure a spot in B section next year . Both sides had plenty of support with so much riding on the game and NOBS might be regretting their kicking for goal in the last quarter when they could only kick 2 goals 5 behinds to MHSOB's 4 goals straight . It must be a bitter pill for a successful club like NOBS to swallow after so many years in A Section and with big expectations at the start of the year to return there straight away . All NOBS supporters will need to ensure that they are there in force next year so they can fight back to B Section in 1998 . Meanwhile across town Trinity played themselves back into premiership favouritism with a great 2nd half revival against a hapless Parade . Trinity have their confidence back and will be hard to knock off from here . REVIEW OF ROUND I S

dust a quick review this week so we can concentrate on the first semi fina l TRINITY V PARAD E

Full credit to the Trinity side as they fought back from 5 goals down at half time to win easily by 2 2 points. The turnaround came about with some positional changes such as Sutcliffe to a wing, Kennedy to half forward and Bladeni onto Ciavola, the continued dominance of Andrew Ramsden on the ruck and hisrwing It was the younger players Hatficld tookoce . Hatfeild,

of Trinity such as Ranisden, Bladeni, G who would have pleased coach Andrews and Kennedy and as they say in the classics Trinity are Dalrymple .D and David Digney were 4 quarB .I .T. For Parade J was excellent ters contributors and Simon Swindon Mulligan was on fire early but was until injured . Tim nullified in the 2nd half by Heighton .

BANYULE V BRIGHTON season on a winning note Banyule finished the and farewelled club champion John Gilliam with a 4 point home victory in a game that you would have close all day expected Brighton to win . The scores were but Banyule were the steadier side in front of goal with players Egan 4 goals and Holt 2 amongst their better and Matt with the experienced Dave Williams O'Brien . Not a great confidence booster for Brighton. but they will prefer the dryer surface this week . Defenders Oakley, Oliver and Alderson were best OLD IVANHOE V BULLEEN-TEMPLESTOWE A 8 goal first quarter set up a 68 point win to the home side who finished the season with a creditable 7 wins considering they lost quite a few of last years premiership side . Marty Stewart with 6 goals and Lachlan McLean with 4 did the damage up fonvard set up the win on whilst Veal, Parker and Donaldson 4

Parris finthe season. Thompson, Roberston and C ished the season well . THERRY V IVANHO E merry turned up for this week with a 11 goal victory over fifth placed side and the result is further proof of the ffernce be een to -1si,'-- and the res t and Mick of the field e Pat Gormant Jason Reddick excellent onballers and again last week Grocock are they provided the opportunities for O'Connor and Pola who finished with 4 and 3 goals respectively . Ivanhoe finished the season with a even ledger of 9 wins and 9 losses and are probably in their rightful position . on the ball and Scoble Brown on a wing, Greg Bull en in defence were their better players . biHSOB V NOBS

As mentioned earlier a super game at the High school with Melbourne having the better of the first half and NOBS fighting back in the 3rd term to get to Jason within a goal at the break . Long goals Glover sealed game and 'Doc' 100th Bamert in his NOBS fate in the last quarter and Tony Orchard reported that the 'Unicorns' celebrated long and hard into the night including club legend Jock Nelson . Stuart Harries stopped everything at full back for and captain Dean Melbourne whilst Wit Walford . In what I Comer both played inspirational games Owen believe were their last games, Bruno Conti and both played sensational games for NOBS Abrahams . with great support form the O'Farrell brothers V PREVIEW OF THE 1ST SEMI FINAL : THERRY

BRIGHTON Therry will start favourite in this match courtesy of their 2 solid wins over Brighton this year and they possess the better form leading into the game with 6 wins in a row whilst Brighton have lost their last 2 games. I believe the centre bounces will be vital where Petrevski for Therry will do battle with Rickerby of Brighton . Both are huge men who love to thump the ball forward and whoever comes out on top will have a excellent big say in the final result. Both sides have Grocock and onballers with Gorman, Reddick, whilst Castaldi of Therry all having had good years, McLachlan Brighton have Pryor, Lennox, Nikas and in good form . I expect Therry's captain Dennis Castaldi to tag the dynamic Andrew Pryor . I think the difference will be that Therry have more r Mick (3 3Goodwi avenues to goa n ) always dangerous an d l Pola (35) and O'Conno THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

Bosanko (23) and Gorman (22) always chipping in . Pola in particular is starting to fire again after injury and he did bag 8 goals against Brighton earlier this year. Brighton will rely on March (53 goals) and their onballers to kick a winning score and in particular on Tom Hayden who is a strong mark but is sometimes let down by his kicking for goal. Both sides have solid defences without being spectacular with Carter, Boyle and Hollow doing the job for Therry and Patterson, Alderson and Fitzgerald consistent for Brighton . I tip Therry to move into the preliminary final with a hard fought 20 point win over Brighton . I am lucky enough to have a couple of guest tipsters for the final series and they predict the following. Rick Brockwell (coach of Banyule) tips Brighton by 10 points, Tony De Bolfo (Herald-Sun Football expert) tips Therry by 29 points and Jack Moniarty (Ammo lover) tips Therry by 7 points . TRIVIA QUESTION

To the tune of "Skobietta", conducted by Sir Gregory Smith (alias Dennis Rodman), celebrations were in full force at the Rising Sun last Saturday after ladder leaders, St . Kevins, accounted for Marcellin in a sensational second semi-final and earned promotion to B Section in 1997 . At Sandringham, before a huge crowd, both sides put on a show with some fine coaching by both Tim Hart and Bruce Ferguson and a level of football worthy of a final at the highest level of amateur football . On Sunday at headquarters, the Saints turned Ajax optimism into absolute gloom with an 85 point thrashing . Except for the first 20 minutes when Ajax showed some early season dry weather form, the Saints were in charge, thanks to a rock solid defence and a forward and following division that shared the ball around with 13 players scoring goals . REVIEW - 2ND SEMI-FINAL

The opening was tight with both teams keen to assert a physical presence . Marcellin had many opportunities to score but had the close playing SKOBs defence applying constant pressure . The 2 goals 8 behinds for the Eagles in the first term enabled St . Kevins to have a 3 point quarter time lead, thanks to better use of opportunities . Eagle's Stephen Theisz laid some fierce tackles in the second term as the Eagles tried everything to gain their ascendancy . In this quarter, SKOBs on-ballers took over to help their team to a handy 24 points half time lead . The third quarter saw Bello and O'Flynn on the Eagles half forward line showing much aggression and persistence as their side lifted to be with 12 points of the lead at the last change . Brady and Hart held out several Eagles attacks with Jim Macey and fiery Chris Purcell battling hard for their sides in the ruck . Two classical "banana" goals in the last half, one each from Treganowan (Eagles) and Moore (SKOBs) were worth more than the paltry admission fees. In the final quarter. St . Kevins remained composed, made a few telling positional changes, and kicked several goals after Marcellin again threatened to steamroll their opponents . Obviously this match had everything, however a battle has been won but the war is far from over . Congratulations to both sides for giving us something special . REVIEW - 1ST SEMI-FINA L

After several weeks of very inconsistent form, Ajax supporters lived in hope that their very popular warriors would return to the football that took them to second position for much of the season . This was not to be as St . Kilda South Caulfield took the game by the scruff of the neck from late in

the first quarter . Saints were allowed to roam far and wid eandsthegamprogressed were running alone on the wider corridors at Elsternwick Park . Lee Govan, with 5 goals off the half back flank, starred along with Leon McGaw, who completely covered a very good opponent . Hayes-Dewar and Kirzner battled it out for aerial supremacy with the Ajax man putting up a good performance with 5 goals against a top defender, O'Sullivan, Presnell and Wilson held the Ajax forwards all day and set up moves from deep in defence that resulted in goals . Kieran and B . Ryan also featured strongly in several of the Saints polished passages of play. Again, Phil Goldberg was an inspiration to the Jackas after a superb season, whilst Jeremy Wrobel at full back performed well against taller opposition . Jason Wrobel, Brian Goldberg and young Brett Duzenman in the second half rated a mention in a side that could not withstand pressure applied all day by the Saints . PREVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL This will be a match worth leaving home for . The Saints have several weeks of top form including last week's semi, whilst Marcellin has some excellent performances and just may be ready to produce the goods at the right end of the season . Marcellin will have learned much from the encounter with the Saints in round 17 and may better suited to the dry Sandringham oval . I'll predict a victory by Marcellin to the tune of 16 points.

RESERVES Marcellin showed why it has been top-dog in reserves football with a well earned victory in a tough physical clash with St . Bedes Mentone Tigers . The Tigers will now take on an Ajax combination who scored in a thriller against Old Geelong last Sunday. The Tiger's form coming into the finals and in last week's match would suggest a victory in this match but I'm sure Ajax with the senior team sniffing mothballs, will be well and truly ready for this clash. Provided Matt Connolly in the ruck and Brendan Hambridge are on fire for the Tigers and Vin L'Huillier in his 300th game leads from the front, I predict a victory for St . Bedes Mentone Tigers by 12 points . David Kalb and Adam Slade Jacobson both play their 100th game for Ajax and will be keen to celebrate in winning fashion . Congratulations to both players . , fter 'bagging' the Two Blues' what do they do `_~ but come out and win both their 1st semi's . Congrats to all concerned and commiserations t o Beaumaris and Parkside (Reserves) on bowing out for season '96 . Both clubs are to be congratulated on their performances this season . To Monash Blues (Seniors and Reserves) well done, but remember, there's still one to go and to Caulfield Grammar an d Old Camberwell (Reserves) lick them wounds and make the most of your last opportunity . lst SEMI FINAL (Review 24 August) SENIORS - BEAUMARIS V ST LEO'S EMMAU S

Central Reserve was in great order all bar the muddy, sticky centre . Assisted with a strong breeze the 'Two Blues' wasted many opportunities and kicked with inaccuracy to register 3 goals 6 behinds to a very valuable 1 goal by the Baysiders. The 2nd quarter saw roles reversed with Beaumaris having trouble kicking straight, however they were able to hold St Leo's to no goals for the stanza and take a slender 5 point lead in at half time . The make or break 3rd quarter didn't work out in the Two Blues favour only managing to bag 1 goal 6 behinds to eventually go into the lemon break all tried up on 36 points apiece and given the breeze at the back of the Beaumaris boys the game looked all over 'Red Rover' . Not to be as matters turned out. Mr Flack (St Leo's coach) extracted that intangible matter out of his troops and in a 'gut' wrenching last quarter they managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat . Stirring stuff indeed and augers well for the Two Blues . Best for St Leos in what really was a 'Big' team performance were Dini, Scotty, Jon and Pitch and for Beaumaris, U19 player Scott Fraser, Acting Capt Phil Thomas an d Jono Holt . RESERVES -ST LEO'S EMMAUS V PARKSIDE

St Leos kicked clear early in the piece to lead by 22 points at quarter time only to see Parkside rally in the 2nd to trail narrowly by 4 points . St Leos came out firing and by lemon time held a defendable 28 point advantage . Try as they might Parkside could make no in-roads during the last quarter and the Two Blues ran out comfortable winners by 29 points . St Leos were well served by Big John, Gill y, Neil and Sarge whilst for Parkside, Paul Harris and Mark Page did well . 2nd SEMI FINAL SENIORS - CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS V MONASH BLUE S

The lst quarter had everthing finals footy is made of. Hard aggression at the ball and strong tackling . Monash had more use of the ball but couldn't convert 8

positively enough due to the relentless pressure put on their forwards by the Grammar defence . This pattern continued through to half time with the Blues taking a slender lead but with the knowledge that they were playing by far the better football . Against the tide the Fields snatched the lead mid way through the 3rd quarter only to see the Blues dig deep to again have the necks in front at lemon time. The Blues free flowing, running game hit top gear in the last stanza and they slammed on 5 majors to 1 as the Fields appeared to stop . Best for Caulfield were both Royals brothers ably assisted by Whitmee and for the Blues Cam Logan, Hippy, Jugs Alexander, Caldwell an d 'Big' Headers . RESERVES - MONASH BLUES V OLD CAMBERWELL The Blues handed out a real old fashioned 'shallacking' to the Wells in what turned out to be a real one-sided 'fizzer' of a game, unless for that matter you were a Monash Blues supporter. The final winning margin of 102 points tells of the sad tale as does the discrepancy in scoring shots, 36 to 9 . PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW (31 August ) SENIORS - CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS V ST LEOS EMMAUS

Ladder positions mean nothing now, however form does and on analysis the Two Blues are wayout in front on recent outings taking into this game 2 wins on the trot as against 2 losses. St Leos will have to overcome and then negate the big man power of the Fields and also rely on their own midfielders to generate enough forward thrusts to set up victory . With confidence at a high I genuinely believe that they can turn the tables on Caulfield and get themselves promotion and a GF berth . Best of luck to my mate George Voyage, coach of Caulfield, I couldn't think of anything more deserving for him than to have his troops rally and do it for him . Regrettably, I think not. The Two Blues by 24 points . RESERVES - OLD CAMBERWELL V ST LEOS EMMAUS After such a pummelling and mauling at the hands of Monash Blues I just can't image the Wells being able to pick themselves up from the floor and knock over a confident and pumped up St Leos outfit. Move over Jack Dempsey if they can, however I reckon old Jack can rest easy and not have to make any adjustments. REPORT

omeone in Celestial Weather found the Rain-Off Switch for the duration of the games last weekend, let's hope the same can occur today . Yarra Vall ey take their place in the Big One, following a 12 point win over an out of sorts Aquinas, who must regroup for today's game with Old Carey. The Parkers go into summer recess, but can be well pleased with their season : except for a couple of inexplicable lapses, they were very competitive all year and being a young side should look fonvard to 1997 with every expectation of success . SECOND SEMI REVIEWS SENIORS: Aquinas v Yarra Valley

The Blooders did everything right in the first term, winning in the ruck, first to the ball, no fancy direction switches, shortest route to goal and it worked, they were 5.4 to 0 .3 at the first change . The 2nd term was the reverse of the lst, Yarra started to link up their individual efforts and made much better use of the ball, resulting in them leading at half time by 2 points . The third quarter saw Yarra Valley add 4 goals to Aquinas' one, with Bevan Smillie an d Paul Telford particularly effective . After Yarra added an early goal in the last, the Blooders staged a typical fightback, and a goal by Shane Livingstone in the 25th minute, had Yarra's lead down to 4 points . The tense last minutes went Yarra's way and Lupoi administered the coup de grace with a fine goal shortly before the siren . The Blooders seemed really alive for only 1-1/2 terms, whereas Yarra, after a ve~y slow start, focused on their tasks more effectively and reaped the rewards . Marchi Tarullu, Peter Dunne and Simon Jones were terrific all day for the Blooders, while "Livo", even on one leg, remained dangerous . As well as the players already mentioned, Yarra had fine contributions from Thompson, Peak, Peterson, Dodwell and McIntyre and Midro's courageous mark on the HBF late in the 3rd term epitomised his team's attitude on the day . RESERVES : Yarra Valley v Aquinas

Yarra Valley jumped into an early lead and were never really headed, except briefly half way through the third quarter . Yarra was far more positive all day and thoroughly deserves their win . FIRST SEMI REVIEW

SENIORS: Old Carey v Chi rnside Park The C's set up their season extension with 8 goal to 1 first term. The Parkers contested every possession but were unable to stop the flow of opportunities to the C's versatile forwards . The C's came long and direct out of the backline and with their mid-fielders

and on-ballers controlling the contests round the ground , they had built a n impregnable lead by 3/4 time. The Parkers had terrific efforts from Mick Carnal and Scott McIntosh, ably assisted by Marcus Walker an d Matt Warren in the backline. Matt Spencer and Tim Price dominated their forward area for the C's, Morrison an d Lee were effective on their wings, Tommy Auldist did some great clearances from the backline and Hedgie's mighty leap, mark and goal from the goal square in the last term was worth the price of admission by itself. RESERVES : Old Carey v Chirnside Par k Old Carey made hard work for themselves by ordinary kicking for goal in the 1st quarter, but turned the situation round during the next three terms for a comfortable win, in an, at times, torrid game. PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINALS SENIORS Aquinas and Old Carey at the Camberwell Sports Ground will be a great game . The Blooders will be out to make up for last weeks lapse and the C's want to show they have the ability to beat anybody . Both sides have talent all over the field, with the Blooders having the better credentials, but the C's have been building up quietly and will be fielding a better balanced side then at their last meeting with Aquinas . Both teams normally play a very direct style, which will make for some spectacular passages of play, and exhausted boundary umpires . The C's will have to watch "Kirky", Marchi, "Collo", "Livo" and company, while the Blooders will have their own work cut out covering " Kanga", "Socks", "Connie", "Vas", "Addo", "Don", to name a few . In the end it comes down to advantage on the day, the Blooders have the score on the board, the C's are still realising their potential . But that potential is so good that the C's are tipped to cause an upset and win by a couple of goals, after a contest of the 'magnificent' variety. RE SERVES : Aquinas v Old Carey

The last time these teams met was in a swamp at Bulleen and the Blooders were victorious . There was not much between them then, and on a drier ground there still won't be . Again it will come down to the work ethic on the day, with honours going to the C's by a few points in a high standard game . sP0 ~-_T s COVER 0 Id Essendon's impressive demolition of Williamstown CYMS in last week's second sem i final has presented the Grammar with an excellen t chance to claim their first senior premiership since 1986 . Alex Frazer will now use his renowned premiership coaching experience to keep the lid on things as D-Day approaches . He will be well aware that it is far too premature to begin clearing a space in the Grammar Trophy case, particularly given the re-emergence of University Bliicks as a bona fide contender, and the fact that the Grand Final is scheduled for the tighter . unfamiliar surrounds of Glenferrie Oval . SEMI FINAL REVIEW 2nd Semi Final : Willi amstown CYMS v Old Essendon Williamstown had first use of a fairly strong breeze favouring the eastern end of the Alec Gillon Oval but good defensive work by the Grammar was able to restrict Willi to just a four point lead at quarter time . Spectators expected OEG to move clear in the second term but Willi's on ballers lifted and lead by Thege (BOG until half time) and Dirty Harry, Cy's were still four points up before two late Grammar goals saw OEG take a very important psychological eight point lead at half time .

The third quarter was the match winner for Grammar- team leader Lutterschmidt began to break loose and as so often has been the case this year when Powerhouse fires, his Grammar teammates tend to walk that little bit taller . OEG full-back Tom Reade continued his fine game on crack Willi full forward Kurkowski who seemed intent on trying to mark from behind while up forward Grammar had potent finishers in Merrington, Clohesy and McPherson . Thege could not continue his influence on-ball in a third quarter in which OEG extended their lead to 3-4 goals and with a strong wind at their backs a Willi resurgence was just not possible. The Grammar eventually ran out the game comfortable seven goal winners in a performance that was probably OEG's best for season 1996 . Best for the winners were O'Brien, Chapman, Hutchinson in the ruck, evergreen Tom Reade, Powerhouse (particularly after half time), Cramer and McPherson, both of which took a number of excellent grabs, while for Willi back-pocket Wes Griffiths defended stoutly, Dirty Harry, Jetset Cook across half forward and Noodlehead Thege (until Half time) were good contributors . A real task now for Alan Elliott to rebuild his sides' confidence for what he hopes will be two weeks ahead. ist Semi Final : University Blacks v North B ru nswic k

A similar wind blew again on Sunday and an excellent first quarter of defensive football by North Brunswick saw University Blacks restricted to just one goal, kicked by prime mover Planet Hall . An early

goal to North Brunswick in the second term bought the margin to four points and an upset was beckoning . However, at this point the whole Blacks unit went up a couple of cogs and despite kicking against a 3/4 goal breeze, began to display the awesome running football that made them so formidable early in the 1996 season . A brilliant individual effort by Hall saw him kick a great goal on the run from the boundary line and with further inspiring play by Zahra (one of the many 'balds' in the Blacks line up), the Blacks rallied to take what appeared to be an insurmountable four goal lead at half time . The Blacks made better use of the wind during the third quarter in which the on-ballers Darroch, Cunningham and Smith used quick and effective disposal to set up numerous opportunities for Blacks forwards who lead by Hall were able extend the lead to eight goals by 3 quarter . North looked a tired, top-heavy unit, with the bright light being young Sorleto on the wing who I believe was close to BOG . The final quarter was fairly even - North never gave up trying - but generally the Blacks' pace, youth and running game was too much . Blacks clearly did their homework, swarming North's linkman Vinny Grimaldi at every opportunity and allowing Ady Tirchett very little latitude up-forward or when ruck roving . Best for the Blacks were Smith, who took some great grabs drifting across the pack, full-forward Planet Hall, Zahra whose dashes resembled an oncoming freight train and fellow rovers Cunningham and the cocky Darroch while for North Sorleto was fantastic, Vin Lirosi across half back was very solid, as were veterans Jo Bodoloh, Craig Fox and Mayo . PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW Williamstown CYMS v University Black s

This match is very tough to assess, particularly on a Monday night when the conditions of the ground are yet to be determined - a week of wet weather will strengthen Willi's chances, the drier the better as far as the Blacks running game is concerned . Wihiamstown have a tremendous psychological advantage thanks to two very gutsy home and away victories over the Blacks but the question is how much confidence did last week's defeat sap out of the Cy's? Clearly if the Cy's are to win they need to get more production out of forwards Kurkowski and McCutcheon who were well down last week, while it must also carefully assign the task of minding the Black's Planet Hall, the best forward in E Central . On the other hand, the Blacks finished last weeks first semi full of running and will approach this game focused on avenging their earlier losses to Willi with th e

ultimate prize for revenge - a place in the 1996 grand final. I will be very surprised/disappointed if this result is not much closer than last week's two finals - I'll tip Uni Blacks to advance to the GF by two goals . Reserves : University Blacks v North Brunswic k I thought the Biacks/OEG clash was the higher standard semi final last week but to North Brunswicks advantage today will be the return of some experienced senior players expected to include Mayo, Shorts" Saunders and "Mad Dog" Miller . Vin Lirosi would be an important added bonus. I believe the Blacks are the best reserves side I have seen during the home and away rounds - but as last week's two's results showed, upsets are currently the order of the day . As such I will select North Brunswick, who I suspect might be a little too experienced and physical for the younger Uni Blacks line up . required by the VFL club but who are not given the green light to play . T his information from the VAFA of course is very important as clubs . In their desire to qualify players for finals, they could be possibly inclined to include list players in their line-ups, particularly if a player is in attendance at his VAFA club partucularly if he tells them he hasn't been selected at VFL level or has played hours earlier. Unfortunately this level of communication hasn't been as forthcoming from the AFL and we haven't been able to advise VAFA clubs as to who has played AFL Senior or Reserves football - we have simply left it up to clubs to ensure that if a player has played AFL football over or on any given weekend (Friday night, Saturday, Sunday or even a Monday) he cannot double-up with his VAFA club too in the same weekend . ecause of the events of last week, where a club lost 3points and a player ends up missing out on a finals series we will have to insist on paperwork emanating from the AFL in a similar way to that provided by the VFL so we can advise clubs who can and cannot play on a weekly basis, rather then leaving it up to clubs to monitor. th all that behind us I hope that the next four week's ahead provide us all with great football which is a wonderful advertisement for Amateur football . y tips this weekend - Old Melburnians, Old ITrinity, St Kilda SthCaulfield, Caulfield Grammarians, Aquinas, University Blacks and Peninsula OB . So confident am I that my tipping ability has improved this year that if I don't tip at least 5 out of 7 winners I'll donate $50 to the senior club who wins by the biggest margin to buy a beer for its players . - Phil Stevens

Traditional football boots with stops can be quite unstable . They can make turning difficult and increase the risk of knee and ankle injuries . So an Australian footballer and scientist pulled out all the stops to give you a boot with superior comfort, greater stability and surer grip when turning .

The boot is Blades, with unique angled rubber ribs and a distinctive X-shaped heel support . Australian Design Award winners, Blades have won over the entire team at AFL side Footscray, the Victorian State Football League umpires, Socceroo captain Paul Wade and top Rugby League internationals . Also approved by the Australian Rugby Football Union, Blades offer a broader last for Australian feet, an internal EVA wedge to lessen achilles strain and 3 sole types to suit any playing surface . So try a pair of Blades . And take the greatest step forward in football boot technology for 25 years .

Congratulations to St . Kevins (C) and Monash Blues (D) on winning their respective second semi finals last weekend . For both of these teams the prize of gaining entry into the section above their current one was celebrated into the wee hours of the morning no doubt . Also to Yarra Vall ey, Powerhouse an d Old Essendon Grammarians who have given themselves a 50% chance of gaining entry into D Section for 1997 with wins last week . Remembering that only the (3) premiers from the E Sections are promoted to D Section the following year . No doubt at 4.45pm this weekend, be it Saturday or Sunday there will be some equally excited clubs, as promotion to B and C hinges on these results . ### Some interesting statistics came out of last weekend's round of matches and finals . Uni. Blues U19's were defeated for the first time in some (40) appearances in U19 Section 1, and the Ormond Amateur Football Club was relegated for the second time in

the club's history . The last time was (28) years ago, and this was due to them having played an ineligible player (so in effect they won enough games on the scoreboard but not within the rules) . Also the clash between MHSOB and NOBS had a severe repercussions for the NOBS club, this time last year they were the second oldest suviving A Section club in the VAFA, now they find themselves in C Section in 1997 . Knowing the pride of all (3) clubs they will no doubt bounce back when their turn arrives . ## # Tips for the A and B Section Best & Fairest awards to be counted on Monday September 9 are as follows : A Section Gil McLachlan (Uni . Blues), Darren Peters (Collegians) and Andrew Jobling (Ormond) . In B Section Simon Dalrymple (Old Trinity), Mark Harrison (Old Paradians) and Bruno Conti (NOBS) .

77 SOUTH SECTION by Damien Batey

ough, thrilling and close, in the tradition that finals football is supposed to be about, such were the matches played last week . Powerhouse reenforced their superiority with a tough win over Peninsula, whilst Salesian turned the table on their arch rivals St Pats, casting them out of the finals series. REVIEW 2nd SEMI FINAL

Peninsula and Powerhouse had been looking forward to their re-match for quite some time, after their draw played several weeks ago . The game started with great tension, as both sides fought dourly for ascendancy . Peninsula got off to the better start however, posting some early goals in the first term . Continuing their good form, the Pirates started the second term strongly . It appeared as if Peninsula would be directing one way traffic for the rest of the match, but Powerhouse lifted late in the term . By half time nothing could separate the two sides and a big second half was to be expected . It is commonly prophesised that the third quarter is the premiership term, and for Powerhouse it won them the game . The consistent efforts of Friend on the wing started to pay dividends for Powerhouse . Meanwhile Flash McCulloch tore the Pirates apart with his strong marking and strong finishing with scoreboard pressure . In an inspiring display, McCulloch helped his side to a gutsy win with his strong marking . By three quarter time, Powerhouse were looking comfortable . The last quarter did not provide as much action as the previous quarter, but the result had been decided by Powerhouse's third quarter . A disappointed Peninsula will now meet with Salesian, who have had the better of the Pirates twice so far this year. Powerhouse, who have not lost a match since round three, have deservedly cemented themselves a grand final birth . Best for Peninsula were their on ball division, which included Trewhitt, Bowen an d McMahon . REVIEW lst SEMI FINAL

In a do or die contest, Salesian downed St Pats for the first time this year, to end the Vultures 1996 campaign. Kicking with the breeze in the first quarter, Salesian broke away to a five goal lead . The Vultures had little influence on the scoreboard in the first quarter and were forced to play catch up football for the rest of the day . In the second quarter, St Pats pegged back Salesian's lead, to go into the half time break a little better off . In the third quarter the Vultures proved their worth and battled relentlessly to get back in the game. Finally a breakthrough came for St Pats at last in the third quarter when they hit the front, but Salesian steadied before the last change to hold a 34

slender three quarter time lead . It appeared as it St Pats wer e going to go on wit h the job in the last quarter . However the final term was relatively uneventful, until Salesian steadied and kicked a late goal to seal the match . The result was disappointing for the Vultures, who were bundled out of the finals after having such a promising year . Best for St Pats were Wise in the ruck, Gurtler in the middle, and forward Mick Sullivan. Salesian will now meet Peninsula to fight for the remaining grand final . REVIEW SECONDS 2nd Semi Final Peninsula continued their season of dominance with a big win over Salesian. The Pirates had control for most of the day and never looked like losing . Charging half back Andrew Parsons was best afield for the Pirates, he was ably supported by Vinnie Branc and Hayes . The Pirates will enjoy a week off, whilst Powerhouse and Salesian will fight for the right to challenge on Saturday . REVIEW 1st SEMI FINAI.

Powerhouse who snuck into the finals with a higher percentage than its nearest competitor, defeated third placed St Pats . Kicking away to a hardy quarter time lead, Powerhouse put themselves in good stead for a win . In the second quarter the Vultures fought back and went into the main break just four points in arrears . A tough third quarter saw the Vultures hit the front, but Powerhouse managed to steady with a goal flurry late in the quarter . The final quarter belonged to St Pats, who pegged back the margin courageously. but time was not utilised well enough by the Vultures and at full time, they still needed another three points . Best for St Pats were Dave Hughes, Carey Brown, Peter Lewis an d Justin McCarthy. PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL

Salesian march into a battle with Peninsula in what should be a fabulous game . The Pirates would have preferred to have met St Pats however, as they have not beaten Salesian so far this year . Both sides can look to be unbeatable on their respective days, but trying to anticipate which side will make the grade is tough work . If experience can count for anything however, the nod could go to Peninsula, who played in last years grand final . Salesian however should not be discounted, but the Pirates could be a little too strong and experienced . PREVIEW SECONDS PRELIMINARY FINAL Powerhouse will take on Salesian who lost to the Pirates last week . Although Salesian finished higher then their opponents, Powerhouse are just the side to cause an upset. The House has the ability, but will need to be tuned in . 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

MILESTONES Peninsula's Andrew Clarke celebrated his 50t h game last week . Andrew has been an important player for Peninsula and his ability as a pacy winger is superb. The Club congratulate Andrew . Peninsula's Brett White will play his 50th game this Saturday . The Pirates hope that their tall backman will feature prominently in a Pirate flag this year. Well done Brett ! PS I have recently changed jobs, and have a new fax number . Please fax all best players and other details to 9772 1696 . Thank yo u

U19 SECTIONS, by Brett Connel l

Knitwear TODAY IT'S CUT THROAT PRELIMINARY FINAL DAY, AND THE PRESSUR E IS REALLY ON Review of Semi - Final matches Division One - First Semi - Final fter an very even first 1/2 between De La Sa lle and A Old Melburnians where the difference was only (2) points in favour of the OM's, the second 1/2 was a complete turnaround . The OM's dominated the "premiership 1/4" and slammed on (7) goals to (1) point to set up their winning margin of some (8) goals. For the OM's Rains, Holme, Sedgley and Deague were prominent with Bennett an d Murray each bagging (6) goals. For De La it was a disappointing way to finish off the season but from all accounts gave themselves every chance in the first 1/2, but were unable to match it with the OM's in the second . Second - Semi Final Well what a time to drop your first match in more than 40 . That's what was on everyone's lips come Saturday night when the Old Xavs ended Uni. Blues' undefeated run at Elsternwick Park last Saturday . A tearaway first 1/4 by the Xavs set up the win, keeping the Blues goalless while adding (7) of their own . In fact a 3/4 time lead of (10) goals could well have been more except the match was at this stage well beyond doubt . For the Xavs Woodrufff, Jones, Ryan, Heil and Dyer were excellent all day, as to were most of the team . The addition of Donati from the seniors had the desired effect, booting (10) majors for the day and having a hand in many others . For the Blues Ryan, Eastaugh, McIntosh and Versteegan were gallant in defeat, but must today regroup against the OM's to get another crack at Xavs in a weeks time . Division (2) White First - Semi Final Warringal bounced out early against Uni . Blacks and held a slim lead at 1/4 time . In fact the difference between the sides all day was minimal . Both sides were locked evenly at 3/4 time but in the end it was the Redbacks who booted clear to reserve the right to challenge Old Camberwell for a place in the Grand Final against St . Kevins next week . For the Blacks none tried harder than White, Atkin, Ward and McGee, with Gellie and Newth bobbing up with (3) goals each . The Redbacks' best were Hopkins, Williams, Rossimel and J . Anderson with the consistent Woodluck snagging and important (6) twins. The Blacks should be proud of their achievements this year, and I know will see 1996 as a stepping stone to future success both at U19 and Senior level . Second - Semi Final In the second match at De La Salle St. Kevins and Old Camberwell clashed for the right of direct entry into the Section (2) White Grand Final . After an even first 1/4 the SKOBS led by (1) point, but it could well have bee n 36

the 'Wellers had they kicked straighter . In the next two 1/4 points went to SKOBS (2nd )

and the 'Wellers (3rd) . With only (4) points separating the two sides at 3/4 time it was up for grabs, and grab it the SKOBS did . They booted (8) goals to (2) to run out convincing winners on the scoreboard, but overall there really was little difference between the sides all day. For the SKOBS Livy, Dollman, Quirk, Kuring and De Kretser were in everything with leading goalkicker Greenham registering (6) goals for the day, to take his yearly tally to (66) . The 'Wellers were well served by Kordic, Hanson and Patterson, and will look forward to today's clash with Warringal for the right to challenge St . Kevins for the flag in a weeks time . Division (2) Blue First - Semi Final Like all of the other U19 finals held last weekend a terrific contest was witnessed at Oakleigh between Beaumaris and Old Haileybury, two evenly matched sides . After an even first 1/4 the pace of the match picked up and it was the Sharks who held what little advantage there was by leading by (14) points at 1/2 time . The Bloods hit back in the third term to only trail by 1 and a 1/2 kicks, but the Sharks soon distanced themselves from the Bloods adding (5) majors to (1) in the last stanza to keep their hopes alive of defending their U19 South crown. For the Sharks Kent, McGrath, Celan and Ferguson were outstanding from go to whoa, with Boctor adding (6) to an already impressive seasons tally of (90) goals . The Bloods were not disgraced and had fine players in Hill, Clarke, Dunphy and Floyd with Efstathiou snaring himself (4) goals . Although the Bloods would be disappointed in bowing out of the finals they have been one of the best sides in Section (2) Blue all season and in their first year back in the U 19 competition will only get stronger . Well done Andrew Baxter, all of the Bloods officials and more importantly the players . Second - Semi Final.

A fierce contest was expected between Mazenod and Old Brighton and neither side disappointed on the day . Nothing separated the two sides all day, and it was to come down to the last 1/4 . Mazenod, having beaten the 'Tonners twice during the season I thought would hold the advantage in the last 1/4, but it was the 'Tonners who ran away in the finish, adding (7) goals to the 'Nodders (1) to earn a week off and await either the 'Nodders or the Sharks in a weeks time . None were better than Le Grand, Dunne, Young and Hawkins for the 'Nodders, with a solid team performance from an extremely modest and humble Old Brighton . Division (2) Red First Semi - Final Marcellin set the pace against Old Scotch and had the Scotchies on the hop by leading unexpectedly at 1/4 time . By 1/2 time the Eagles lead had been reduced t o 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

just (4) points and at 3/4 time the advantage now lay with the Scotchies . They had clawed their way back from a slow start and with a never-say-die attitude continually attacked their goals and harassed the impressive Eagles runners. In the finish the pressure of the Scotchies was too much and they pulled away to win a tight and tough contest by (21) points . Crane, Romensky, Gilchrist, Silverwood an d Walkom were key players in the Scotch win with Panton finishing off up forward well with (6) big ones . The Eagles gave it everything but in the finish were outplayed and pressured by the Scotchies, however none tried harder than Black, Stephens and Aquiready with Karavasili s and McMahon chipping in with (4) goals each . Well done to Peter Randall and all of the players and officials involved with the Eagles, you had a fine year and you should look toward 1997 with much eagerness . Second - Semi Final Old Carey's lst 1/4 against Whitefriars put the 'Friars behind the eight ball in terms of having to play catch up football for the rest of the afternoon, which took its toll on the 'Friars as they battled hard but to no avail eventually succumbing to the might of the OC's for the third time this season . Costello, Oppy, Alison and Spencer were named best for the OC's with Sali booting (7), while for the 'Friars Nolan, R . Pawlick , A . Pawlick and Fedele never gave in. The dominance of the OC's was evident from their (39) scoring shots to the 'Friars' (18) on a day perfect for football . The 'Friars must bounce back today and regroup strongly if they are to get another shot at inflicting Old Carey's first defeat for the year next weekend in the Grand Final. PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division One

Preli minary Final - Uni. Blues versus Old Melburnians (Oakleigh 2pm) The score between these two sides stands at (2) zip, in Uni Blues' favour and coming off their first loss in some (40) outings it would seem an awesome task that faces the Old Melburnians today. Despite all of the signs pointing to the Blues rebounding strongly it was the OM's who pushed them to (12) points in the last round some two weeks ago and the Blues will not forget that day. Steve Carroll would have spoken steadily and succinctly to his players and they will be charged up for this match, he will also be aware of fine OM players in Holme, Deague, Clark and Boyd . On the other hand Mark Zuker would have noticed that with Halligan starved of opportunities by pressurising the Blues runners in Ryan, Strack and Versteegan the Blues game floundered and he will be attempting to mirror Xavs tactics of last week today. In a cut throat final there is no place to hide and with the Oakleigh surface being true I can see a marvellous contest from start to finish. In a real toss up it was the OM's Round 18 form that led me to believe that the Blues were ready to be knocked off, and I believe that today their recent form leans me towards the second upset in two weeks . OM's by (9) points . Selection: Old Melburnians Division (2) Whit e Pre liminary Final - Old Camberwell versus Warringal (Timber Ridge 11 .30am) Both meetings of both these teams have seen very close contests . In Round 2 it was the Redbacks by (11) points, although that day the 'Wellers had more scoring 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

shots but failed to convert . In Round 11 it was again the Redbacks but only by a whisker, once again straighter kicking proving the difference . Both sides possess key forwards in Woodluck, Playfair (Warringal) and Hancock an d Kordic (Old Camberwell) . The key to this game will be the team who can settle first and pressure the other, both teams last week played terrific football in fine conditions and if this week's weather holds we should be in for a beauty . The 'Wellers key players in Hardman, Webb an d Williams will have their hands full with the Redbacks' Anderson, Attardi an d Camellerl, in what will be one hell of a battle all over the ground . History points to the Redbacks in a close match and although both teams deserve a crack at SKOBS next week I favour Warringal to get that chance after a hard fought win today. Selection: Warringal Division (2) Blue Preliminary Final - Mazenod versus Beaumaris (Oakleigh 11 .30am) Despite the fact that the 'Nodders finished on top and were the best team statistically across the year, today they take on a pumped up Beaumaris who have firmly in their sights back-to-back Section (2) Blue Premierships . One occasion this season it was the Sharks who thrashed the 'Nodders, and in the return bout the 'Nodders kept the Sharks to a mere (5) points . The 'Nodders will need big games from Paolucci, Occhiuto, Riley and Ward, while overall the Sharks have dangerous players in Fisher, Celan, Whitaker and Wadham. In a real tight contest mental resolve will come to the fore and both teams will need to be totally focussed to take this match, with the ultimate prize a clash with Old Brighton for the Section (2) Blue Premiership . Although the 'Nodders have come a long way in the second 1/2 of the season and the Sharks have fallen away I believe the Sharks overall strength from goal to goal will prove to be the difference . Selection : Beaumaris Division (2) Red Preliminary Final - Whitefriars versus Old Scotch (Timber Ridge 2pm) This season the score stands at a win apiece for these two sides, early in the year it was the might of the 'Friars who thumped the Scotchies by (8) goals with Lacey, the Pawlicks and Winterburn doing as they pleased . On the return bout it was Scotchies turn as they easily doubled the 'Friars score at home, with prime movers Gwynn, Miliken and Eagle dominating. Last week the 'Friars were simply outclassed after 1/4 time and would dearly love to get another crack at the OC's, but so too would the Scotchies who last week won a tight contest against Marcellin . Both sides possess potent goal scorers Panton, Romensky (Old Scotch), Davis and Fedele (Whitefriars), and strong mid-fields and it will be the these two lines that will have much influence on today's game . The 'Friars strength comes from Lacey, Davis and Vandenboom, while the Scotchies rely heavily on Littlejohn, Silverwood and Tindale . Today on a firm surface at Timber Ridge it will be the 'Friars who will get the points through a greater ability through their midfield and keeping the Scotch goalscorers relatively quiet . Selection: Whitefriar s Under 19 - Continued on Page 38 >37

UHSOB captain Alan Flavel took out the "C" grade award to repeat the performance of his clubmate Max Johnston in 1975 . M. Ritterman (Ajax), G . Butter (N . Bruns) and Bruce Ivey (W. Bruns) were winners in "D", "E" and "F". It was the second successive award for Michael Ritterman . Michael Nugent (De La Salle) beat Alex Marcou (T'town) by 2 points in Junior 2 best and fairest . Top goalkickers for the season after home and away games were "A" Tyquin (U . Blues) 77 ; "B" Jones (Marc) 87 ; "C" Roberson (0 . Melb) 71 ; "D" Bialek (Ajax) 54 : "E" Dancer (ANZ Bank) 77 ; "F" O'Loughlin (B . Hills) 76 : Junior 1 Sloan (Monash) 86 ; Junior 2 Czerny (T'town) 156 .

unusual feat for Gary Amott and Mick Perrett as they had played in finals from E Section to A Section . Caulfield Grammarians (A Section), Geelong (B Section) and Assumption (C Section) missed fourth place on percentage to St Bernards, Ivanhoe and Old Haileybury respectively. Marcellin in their first year of Amateur football had both sides in the finals . 150 games to St Kilda CBOC's robust, rugged, ribald, redhead but never raucous or randy, ruckman Jack Scanlon . Ivanhoe 19 .19 defeated Uni Blacks 14.13 in B Section first semi - stars were Bill McWhinnie for Ivanhoe and Chris Cordner with 8 goals for the Blacks. Ormond and Uni Blues met in the second semi with Ormond, convincing winners of previous two meetings, firm favourites. Finals umpires to main games were Brian Hagarty, Don Dodds, Gavin Marshell, David Harradence, Pat Loy, Norm Charlie, Bill Mason and Daryl George . 30 YEARS AGO - 196 6 North Old Boys, Old Geelong and Ajax who won second semi finals in C, D, and E Sections respectively, already fulfilled one of the two ambitions of each club - promotion to a higher section . Old Paradians trailed Caulfield Grammarians in A Section first semi and almost threw away the game kicking 2 .10 in the last quarter before winning by a goal . Oldest player in "A" Section first semi players list was Caulfield 31 year old Max Brook (5'6" and 9 .13) a former "A" Section Best and Fairest (with Ormond) . Captains were Tom Tootell (Caulfield) and Peter Booth (Old Paradians) . Ormond 24 .14 beat Old Melb 9 .6 convincingly in B Section first semi . Best and Fairest winners were : "A" - M . Mulcahy (Old Xavs) ; "B" - V. Crowe (Kew) ; "C" - B . Pardon (W . Brunswick) ; "D" - W . Trinder (Brunswick) and "E" - N. Pidgeon (Commercial Bank).

25 YEARS AGO - 197 1

Ormond and Uni Blues staged a stirring semi final with the only a goal in Ormonds favour at the finish . In the other semi Hampton Rovers beat Commonwealth Bank by 9 points . Under the finals system Ormond and the Rovers met at St Kilda CG with umpire Reg Caddy in charge to decide the "A" Section Premiership. Best and Fairest winners were: "A" - Geoff Hibbins (Collegians) ; "B" - Phil McLaughlin (Old Paradians) ; "C" - Bill McGrory (Glenhuntly) ; "D" - G . Allen (Teachers College) and Junior Section - Neil Roberts (MHSOB).

45 YEARS AGO - 195 1

Best and Fairest -winners were: "A" - J . Douglas (Coburg) ; "B" - M . Birrell (0 . Carey) ; "C" - P. Cohen (Old Trinity) ; "D" - R . Abernathy (Brunswick) ; "E" - M . Herzfeld (Ajax) and "F" - P . Gartner (Marcellin) . Coburg suffered their second successive defeat when they went down to Ormond by 27 points in the last round and lost second place . Coburg were hopelessly out of form, failing to score a goal in the first half and went in at the interval with a 10 goal deficit . Coburg had little chance in the second half as heavy fog settled over the ground and it was impossible to see much of the play in this period. It was Ormonds first win in nine meetings with Coburg . Coburg went on to lose to St Bernards in the first semi by 33 points . With an 11 goal burst in the third quarter St Bernards held an unbeatable 12 goal lead at the last change . Best were M . Mahoney (6), K . Mahoney and Burgin (St Bernards) and Leckie, N . Beattie and Scanlon for Coburg. A great performance by St Bernards in their first year in "A" Section . COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by AFCANAFA

A GA1?A~Z FOR OLYMPIAN S AFL Stars share many attributes with Olympic heroes, says Rod Austin he Olympic Games are the pinnacle for many athletes in team and individual sports . To see the best athletes in the world competing against each other at the highest level is absorbing and interesting . As viewers we all very quickly become experts in sports that barely rate a passing glance in the results sections of the sports pages. AFL football is the peak of our sport and many of the players we see week in week out could have been champions in other areas had they not been drawn to our great game . The top players require a combination of power, agility, speed, endurance, strength, flexibility and the ability to accept and give out body contact through tackling and shepherding. Skill levels have to be high in a number of areas - kicking, marking, handball, picking up the ball off the ground, and so much more - and these have to be performed quickly and effectively when under pressure . All sports can learn from each other even though they may seem to have a few things in common at first glance . Many principles relating to preparing individuals and teams for sporting contests can be adapted to the needs of a particular sport . Footballers now have access to the most modern facilities, technology and coaching support personnel available through their clubs . No stone is left unturned in their training, match day performance, recovery from injury both physically and mentally. Watching other sports at the highest level can not only inspire footballers to greater efforts but reinforce the belief that the approach they are undertaking is correct . Any individual athlete or team member who wins an Olympic medal must have a number of qualities that can be assessed and used as part of a checklist for your own

performance . Dedication, determination and mental toughness must be high on the list as success is not something that comes automatically but is a product of many hours of hard work and sacrifice. Disappointments do occur - often people only remember the high points of a particular career but do not realise that along the way there were setbacks that had to be overcome . Discipline relates to areas such as diet, sleep, and time management - lifestyle choices that have to be made if you are to give yourself every chance to be the best you can. Setting realistic goals, both long and short term, helps an athlete work to a positive outcome in a logical, ordered manner. It allows for realistic self examination along the way in order to achieve the best result possible . A key area on the day of competition is concentration - the ability to focus on the task at hand and not be distracted. The ability to perform under pressure is something we all admire and one reason why sport is so full of highs, lows and emotion. We have watched the Olympic Games with great interest, particularly when Australian athletes were in action . We probably sat back and admired them irrespective of the results they obtained . Behind each one of them is a success story built around qualities we should understand and seek to emulate . Sydney's Skipper Paul Kelly is one of our AFL footballers who has many of the attributes required at the top level of Olympic sport : power, speed, endurance, strength, flexibility and so much more . This article was taken from the Hampden Region Coaches Association Newsletter Vol.6 No . 3 August 1996 . °ted by PH Stevens Team Managers please attend to teamsheets very carefully, particularly now that final s matches are here . If a player's name is printed on a teamsheet and the player does not take the field this name must be struck from the sheet. Any name without a signature beside it is considered an ineligible player.

As is the normal custom, fines are levied against clubs who field players in jumpers with numbers that do not agree with those published in the "Amateur Footba ller ." As we ll players in jumpers not listed are fined in a similar fashion . This audit is carried out after the finals series and fines passed onto clubs in the normal way .

The 1996 Vote Count Night will be held this year at the Carlton Crest Hotel on Monday September 9th . Invitations have been forwarded to club Presidents, with three invitations going to each club of the Association . Section best and fairest winners and leading goalkickers will be invited as well and these winners will be non-paying guests of the Association . Clubs have been phoned this week and each club has had their highest vote earner indicated to them and it is anticipated that this player is the third person attending the Count from his club . Ftt Sincere thanks from myself and the VAFA staff who are on duty on Saturday evenings for the way in which club officials and supporters have not deluged Administration with calls relating to matches etc . During our very busy period from 4 .45 - 6 .00 pm . Your consideration has made our tasks significantly easier and has allowed results, ladders and next week's games to be worked out and distributed as quickly as possible.

It was disturbing to hear reports last from last week's games that some players' gear had been stolen from dressing rooms at some grounds, particularly disturbing when two different teams have had to share the one room during the day. Whilst certainly not wishing to cast aspersions on clubs I think it may be we ll wort hwhile that each team appoints a doorman who stands "guard", particularly while the actual game is in motion. I know from experience at Elsternwick Park that non-football "visitors" frequent rooms when they know the games are in progress and everyone's focus is on the field of play . Normally we are first class in leaving rooms clean and tidy, particularly at grounds where the VAFA teams are visitors - Sandringham, Glenferrie Oval for example . A few stories trickled back last week which were suprising . Could a ll clubs please leave rooms used nice (don't you hate that word) and tidy most of our clubs excel normally in this area .

LEGEND PASSES O N Amateur footballer followers of the 40's and 50's would be saddened to hear of the death on 19th august in Canberra of Duncan Anderson who died after a short illness . In the old measure, Duncan was 64", a skilled ball handler and his agility showed in his ability as a speedy high hurdler . After an outstanding career at full forward for Melbourne Grammar School in 1948-9, Duncan joined the University Blues in 1950 and was the spearhead in its outstanding 1951 "A" Section Premiership team . Duncan topped the A Section goalkicking for five successive years 1950-54 a record approached only by Bill Pearson, Old Scotch, in years 1934-3 7 . He was a very sure mark and a prodigious punt kick . His years with the Blues were 1950 to 1953 and then in 1954 he played with Old Melburnians before leaving mid year to take up a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University . After leaving Oxford, Duncan joined the Australian Diplomatic Service, serving overseas and in Canberra where he lived on retirement . A quiet and very likeable man, Duncan maintained a very keen interest in Amateur football and always recalled the great pleasures his teams at University Blues and Melbourne Grammarians gave him .
