A SECTIO N by Don Blackwood R ICÂŽN CROSSED BY OWS BIG TEST NOW ON COLLEGIANS Ad Melburnians have now stepped up the pace . A tight win over a committed and gallant University Blues now poses the question : Are they a real threat to the Collegi ans/Old Xaverians axis who have identified themselves as one/two in the past month? The Redlegs current level of desperation and willingness to make a competitive contest puts them in the 'one to be watched' category . A sad ending for the Blues who have been an exciting club in recent years . Rose from the ashes in the early nineties to be grand finalists in '95 and Grant Williams and his dedicated group of true believers have lifted the standards to a new level with an exciting brand of no nonsense footy. But their '96 just wasn't built on consistency and it was a waiting game ; waiting until they would unleash some of that flair and purpose that made them the 'sit up and take notice' club . So it's now back to the big two, Co ll egian s and Old Xavs . The rivalry starts to build as Co llegi ans rightfully deserve to be favourites for their overall performances during the year . But Xavs not far behind winning the last nine including a comfortable victory over the Lions recently and with the wind in their sails are keen on the back-to-back arrangement . Should be a terrific contest today . FIRST SEMI REVIEW Chris Beltrame threads one through at the 18 minute mark of the last quarter . Blues hit the front by two points and an upset is likely. But it was Peter Handbury in the finish who scored the two goals to give OM's a victory by 16 points and a move into the prelim . Nip and tuck, hard fought game all day with all players showing plenty of desperation . Blues had the early break with Richard Vandenberg leading the charge and Andrew Henderson and Richard Furphy providing plenty of drive across the centre . But Blues were driving the ball too high and long into the forward zone leaving OM's backs easy options to punch the ball clear . Campbell Kennedy around the ball was a constant source of drive for the Redlegs early . OM's had almost all the play in the second quarter and peppered the goals . but Blues' Hamish Worsely, Toby Mclntrye and Stephen Meade defended grimly . Bromell was well held by Meade and Strooper had to earn his kicks. At half time OM's held a solitary one point lead, but appeared to have more method in their sort ies forward . 2
Blues continued to fight back and three goals in four minutes in the third quarter gave the students some breathing space, but it seemed the pattern of Blues play to score their goals in spurts and then battle courageously to keep OM's out. Strooper relieved the pressure for OM's and when Andrew Thompson's brave efforts resulted in a goal, OM's had taken the initiative again . OM's extended the lead to seven points in the last quarter an d had the adv an tage of the scoring end . When Adam Lennen broke free from Ben Ellinghaus and Beltrame followed up, it looked like a possible boilover . But OM's, who looked more likely to r convert up forward, launched into some solid attacks and experienced campaigners in Bromell and Strooper exerted their influence to hold the ball in and set up the victory, . Handbury finished it off. For OM's, Thompson was a courageous player until he tired in the last quarter, while Kennedy was a constant possession getter driving the ball forward with penetration in his kicks . Peter O'Brien in the centre was quick with his hands in the close contests and Webb, Stuckey and Eabrywere fine defenders . For the Blues, Vandenberg was an exciting player and Gil McLachlan covered so much territory while Toby Mclntrye is worthy of a mention. 2ND SEMI PREVIEW
One all in the clashes previously, the first game in round four to Collegi an s as Xavs were in the depths of their early season nightmare and the Lions whipped them by almost nine goals . Xavs reversed that result at the Vi llage Green in round 1.3 in atrocious conditions with Collegians having plenty of chances but inaccurate kicking left them three goals short. Xavs have an unblemished record in the second round and the question is c an they keep it going? Surely they must lose one sooner or later, but they are playing with confidence and a depth of player personnel second to none. Collegians lost only two matches in the second half to both Xavs an d OM's, so their form, pa rt icularly in recent weeks has been good. Plenty of rivalry and the makings of a tougl', physical encounter today. Collegians have a fine set of onballers with Matt Galbraith, Danny Thomson, Gabe Dean-Johns and Anthony Wallace alternating. Throw in a Darren Baxter or the tough and relentless Darren Peters around the midfield and the engine room of the Lions is second to none in the competition . Whoever Xavs have around the ball, whether Simon Wood. Anthony

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
Keyhoe or Andrew Dillon, they will battle for possessions when the going is tough inside . Xavs strength will be its capacity to kick goals easily. With Dominic Berry, Adam Jones, James McDonald and possibly Dan Richardson, they have a number of options to cause real headaches for Nick Milat, James Bennett, Anthony Parkin and co . Perhaps Bennett on Berry? That's worth watching . At the other end Brock Mooney will have to display all his talents to outwit the experienced Andrew Brushfield. Michael Blood should win the ruck contests, but not easy against the veteran Chris Pollock and the improving Brett Jefferson . But Collegians strength is at ground level and if the Lions can typify the spirit of the available Steve Laussen, they should gain enough usage to bring the ball forward often enough .

So many of the B section footy experts had predicted that this final series would just be betwee n Trinity and Parade but the way that Old Brighton came out firing last week and took apart a strong Therry side suggests that they have the firepower to have a huge say in this years premiership race . Brighton were able to avenge last years 1st semi final result by continually winning the ball from the centre and with a strong target in Tom Hayden, who must have taken at least 10 marks, they coasted to a 9 goal victory . REVIEW OF 1ST SEMI FINAL
Brighton had a dream start to the game with a 5 goal burst in the first 11 minutes with the Therry defence powerless to stop them . Two goals to Hayden and singles to Lennox, Nikas and 'Hooker' McLachlan was the start that coach Shane Young wanted and Rickerby had also started well against Petrevski . Goals from Stanko and Mick Goodwin reduced the margin to 18 points by the 20 minute mark but a long goal from Brighton winger Kryzwniak extended the lead again by quarter time . Unfortunately for Therry key midfeilder Pat Gorman was unable to take his place in the side when he was diagnosed with chicken pox on the Friday before the game . At the start of the 2nd quarter Murch on the lead marked well and kicked truly to again make it 5 goals the difference and Therry were really struggling to get their running game going. It was a battle for both sides throughout this quarter as Therry's defence started to play with a bit more desperation and goals to Pola and Pignatelli reduced the half time margin to 20 points and would have given Des English's team some hope . Therry lost some flexibility during the quarter when Wriggleswo rt h left the ground with a knee injury. Brighton had captain Nick Perry in attack at the start of the 3rd term and he responded with a goal at the 5 minute mark and when Lennox marked and goaled a couple of minutes later the difference was 35 points and the writing was on the wall for Therry . Brighton lost star player Andrew Pryor with a leg injury but it was certainly not Therry's day as captain Dennis Castaldi was sent off at the 10 minute mark and the goals started to flow . Goals to Lennox, McLachlan, Talbot and then Lennox again with his third for the quarter put the game beyond doubt as Therry lost Elliott with another send off late in the term . When Perry kicked another the Brighton lead was a whopping 66 points and Therry had only added a solitary point for the quarter . At 3/4 time Des English asked his players to play the game out with some pride and they replied with their best passages of play for the day as they outscored Brighton by 5 goals to 3 but the damage ha d 4
been done and it was Brighton straight into the Preliminary Final with a convincing 54 . point win .
There were plenty of good players for Brighton with Rickerby outstanding in the ruck against the giant Petrevski. Lennox with his 4 goals was dangerous all day and rover Oakley did his best work in the centre square and was able to use his pace to great effect around the ground . The Brighton defence was ably lead by back pocket Birch, full back Alderton who did the job on Pola and half back Alderson who slipped down the ground for a goal in the last term . As mentioned earlier Hayden was great in the forward line and Brighton would have been happy to win so easily without strong contributions from Pryor and Perry. For Therry, defenders Gauci, Seymour, Barron and Woodgate tried hard but were under constant pressure all day and Goodwin and Petrevski were serviceable in what was a disappointing finish to their season. PREVIEW - 2ND SEMI FINA L
Both Parade and Trinity have been the form sides of the competition this year and have earned the right to the double chance and first crack at the grand final . It really is a big game as the winner gets promotion to A grade, the weeks rest and every players dream of the chance to play in a premiership side . So expect a willing affair with the stakes high . When these sides met during the year it has been Trinity who have taken the points on both occasions with a 6 point win at Bundoora in round 5 and then they came from behind in round 18 to win by 22 points and were able to keep Parade goalless in the 2nd half. I expect another close battle today with both sides expected to include players from the round 18 clash . S . Hatfield, Anderson and Van Der Hock should come in for Trinity whilst Kerr, Bellis and Cosgriff may come back for Parade . Both sides have many strengths but to outline the major ones I would say that Trinity has a fantastic running game with players such as Dalrymple, Norman and G . Hatfield outstanding on the ball and vice captains Sueling and Sutcliffe providing the drive from def-nce . All players are instructed to move the ball quickly and Parade must be prepared to chase hard today, in particular their forwards, if they are succeed . For Parade I would suggest their strength this year has been in the consistency of their players and the ability to keep pressuring the opposition . They have only lost 2 games and players such as Vincent, Ciavola, Brabender, Farrell and Dallas have been contributors all year in this area . The challenge fo r 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
Parade is to be able to sustain the pressure for 4 quarters and not just half a game as happened in round 18 .
Both sides have key forwards and the match ups will be important . I suggest they may go like this Farrell on Stickland, Dall as on Heath, Zappa on C. Phillips, Cumming on Harrison, Glass on Kerr, Heighton on Mull igan . Andrew Ramsden has had a great year in the ruck for Trinity and his clash with Peter O'Loughlin will be vital to the outcome with the big man from Parade needing to be able to match the athletic ability of the Trinity player. Parade will need also to be prepared to match Ramsden when resting in the forward line and Lex Taylor who will ruck off the bench for Trinity. This should be a close one but I think Parade can turn around the home and away results like Brighto n

REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL
C SECTION 1996 'DREAM TEAM '
The Saints ended Marcellin's season with a 67 point drubbing, due to a runaway second half scoring 16 goals to 7 . With Neeson, Gardner (5) and Riddell (4) giving the ball to the small brigade of Ryan, Tkocz, Astapen)to, Claxton and Green, the Saints ran riot to score an emphatic victory . In the backline, Kerian, Wilson and Hayes-Dewar, gave the Eagles forwards a torrid time from the first bounce and were always in control . For the hapless Eagles, Waters, Bello, Gill and Collins were best on a day when there were very few positives . The loss of Chris Purcell prior to the match left Steve O'Flynn and Ben Day the herculean task of attempting to take control in the ruck and around the ground . Marcellin has had a great season with all four clubs reaching the finals and 149 players pulling on the colours in 1996 . Congratulations on a most commendable performance . Surely by 2 p .m . this Saturday, one premiership flag will be there as some consolation.
A panel of "experts" has selected a team of enormous talent . I'm sure there will be some discussion and maybe disappointment, but after much deliberation, we feel that the side chosen is an excellent representation of all clubs and includes the most consistent performers in C Section in 1996 . B Reid (Thom), Chapman (SKOBs), Manton (OGs) HB Hayes-Dewar (SKSC), Tully (SBMT), Brady (SKOBs )
GRAND FINAL PREVIE W
This game promises everything . Both sides have enormous talent in all parts of the field and will both be instructed to move the ball as quickly as possible. St . Kevin's strength will be its adaptability and its versatility . St . Kilda South Caulfield will rely on its ruck rovers and run out of defence . Both sides will appreciate Elsternwick Park in d ry conditions, with St . Kevin's more likely to be at home if conditions are heavy. St . Kilda South Caulfield has
semi injuries and will be at full strength . I'll predict a victory for the SKOBs by 21 points, with the fresh legs being a major difference in the second half .
Marcellin takes on an in-form Ajax . The Jackas put in a top performance against a disappointing St. Bedes M entone Tigers but will need to improve out of sight to have any chance in this one . With much confidence, I'll select Marcellin to take the C Section reserve flag by 39 points .

,--) ye, bye Caulfield Grammarians . After lookin g ~~~ the competitions benchmark team from abou t round 5 on, the 'Fields' struck major injury woe s when it counted most and despite their best efforts they just couldn't cover the gaps sufficiently enough to earn promotion. This in no way detracts from the performances put up thus far by both Monash Blues an d St. Leo's Emmaus who rightly have earned their place in this year's Grand Final and in doing so gain promotion to 'C' Section in season 1997 . SENIORS - MONASH BLUES V ST . LEO'S EMMAUS `Itvo extremely well coached and disciplined teams to contest this epic. Both teams have excellent recent form going into battle and look very evenly matched . Goal to goal lines look the equal of each other and the respective defences look capable of holding their own against good but not overly potent attacks . In my mind the match will be won or lost in midfield both at the centre square and midfield contests . It is in this area that I slightly lean or tilt in favour of Monash Blues with their 'plethora' of running type players a la Hipwell, Baring, Rogers and Co. ably backed up by the calibre of manpower of Barker, Logan an d Big 'Headers' . The Two Blues' have many fine players within their own ranks and it will be a huge task for 'Doc' Rogers to get his troops to close them all down on the one day, however, I think they can negate the Leo's strengths a little better than the reverse . In what promises to be a beauty, I'm sticking with Monash Blues to win by 21 points. RESERVES - MONASH BLUES V. ST. LEO'S EMMAUS Monash Blues have been the pacesetter team in the 'Rezzies' all year long and have headed the table from the outset and I reckon on them to have the Premiership Flag in their hands come final siren time . It is however a GF and funnier things have happened in '2 horse' events and St. Leo's are in rare form at present . This game promises to be open, fast, free flowing and a display of terrific talent from both camps . Barring the draw there can only be one winner and I'm on the Monash wagon to the tune of 27 points . Club Scribes - Don't forget the telephone calls and!or fax messages on Mondays to telephone 9810 3370 , fax 9810 3251 by 5 p .m . Thanks heaps !
SENIORS - CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS V . ST . LEO'S EMMAUS Kicking into the breeze in the first quarter Caulfield Grammar did well to hold an inaccurate St . Leo's (2 goals 5 points) and trail by only 11 points . The 'Fields' however had a monumental 10 minute lapse in the second and allowed the Leo's to kick goals at will, five in fact whilst only managing to put two on the board for themselves and thus find themselves down the 'tube' by 29 points at the long interval. The 'Two Blues' came out in the championship quarter pumped up and firing on all cylinders to put the game beyond doubt and hold a lemon time lead of 49 points. The last quarter was fairly even and in fact the 'Fields' managed to narrowly outscore St . Leo's, however the horse had well and truly bolted and the "llvo Blues' registered a most comfortable 44 point winning margin . Best for the victors were Hammer, Ronch, Raffs and Robo and for the vanquished, none better than Rooster ably backed up by Markovic and Williams . Well done 'Two Blues', commiserations 'Fields' . RESERVES - OLD CAMBERWELL GRAMMAR V . ST . LEO'S EMMAUS
St . Leo's started brightly assisted by the breeze and held a 12 point lead at quarter time . The second stanza was a tight, no holds barred contest with defences well and truly on top . The "Itvo Blues' had their beaks in front at the long interval narrowly by 9 points . The third was a replica of the second and St. Leo's extended out their lead to 17 points at lemon time and in the last both teams went hammer and tong with the 'Wells' only managing to claw back on e

E EAST SECTION by Barry Hickey GRA ND FINt3I, REPORT he scene is set for the showdown between the two power Club's of '96, Yarra Valley and Aquinas, to do battle for the Senior and Reserves Flags . Aquinas were far too strong for a feeble Old Carey last week, with the C's once more unable to shake off the hex which besets them in Preliminary Finals. It seems the only way for Old Carey to contend for a flag, will be to bypass the Preliminary by winning a 2nd semi. Following on from our esteemed Editors remarks last week about the better umpires becoming available for the lower Sections Preliminary Finals round, I'm not sure that it necessarily follows that players behaviour is a function of umpiring competence . An over authoritative umpire can cause just as much player frustration as an inconsistent or indecisive one . It is also important for the A and B section umpires not to assume that E Section players are congenital idiots. And, because there is not the same uniformity of skills across the board in an E Section finalist as there is in an A level side, the umpires need to restrain their lightning whistle blowing reflexes, to give the players that little extra time to perform an action and thus enhance the natural flow of the game. Preliminary Finals Review Seniors Aquinas attacked against what John Montgomery, Old Scotch's President, said was a six goal wind and Cultrera posted the first goal in the 2nd minute . Old Carey were fumbling, hesitant and not using the wind to advantage, their first major came from strong ground play by Hedgie Hickey in the 5th minute . The Blooders posted two more from Livo and Cultrera in the 9th and 10th and the C's looked to be in trouble . Goals to Addision, Hickey and Price put the C's a goal up at the lst change ; it wasn't enough an d Addison was off with a femoral bicep strain . Aquinas were swamping Old Carey at the fall of the ball, with the C's making too many errors. The Blooders showed how it should be done with a 6 goal 2nd term, including two more from Cultrera, who was burning, they were dominating the mid-field and their disposal was far superior . The 3rd quarter saw Aquinas outscore the C's 4 .3 to 3 .6 and while Hickey battled gallantly up forward, the 31 point deficit had a fatal look about it. This proved to be the case, with the Blooders adding 5 goals to 1 in the last, turning the game into a rout . They won because they gave up no easy possessions . competed harder for the ball and did not permit the piebald ground surface or the wind to shift them from their game plan. U19er, Andy Cultrera, was sensational in 10
the forward line for Aquinas with 5 goals, Chris Lamborn wa s BOG, with a grea t display of old fashioned roving, while Marchi Tarulli and Dave Phelan controlled the mid-field encounters . For the C's Tommy Auldist and Andrew Jackson were resolute in the backline, Hedgie Hickey whether up forward or downfield later in the game, played with flair and spirit an d Mark Yarnall did well at fullback and in the ruck. A sad end for Old Carey, who hardly did a thing right, while Aquinas did everything required to set up today's clash. Reserve This game was eerily like the Senior match, Aquinas outscored Old Carey against the wind in the first term, consolidated their position with a 5 .3 to 0 .0 2nd quarter and took a 39 point lead into the long break . The C's never really challenged in the 2nd half and were only ably to score 1 point against the wind for the whole game . Jeffrey and Parris dominated the pack clearances for the Blooders and King was hard at the ball all day . The C's had few clear winners, but Tim Moulton, Ian Cohen, Paul Bryce and Richard Evans, struggled well against overwhelming opposition.
Grand Finals Previews Seniors In the 2nd Semi, Aquinas lost the plot from the 2nd to half way through the last terms, Yarra Va ll ey, for all their skills will not be able to bank on that happening again today . But did the Blooder's lose it, or was it pinched, by Yarra's ability to change into overdrive? Aquinas effectively shut down Old Carey's playmakers in the Prelim . and will be hoping to do the same today, but that may not be so easy against Yarra Valley . The state of the ground and the weather will have a big influence on the outcome, if it is wet and heavy, the Lupoi, Fung, Thomson, McVean, Smillie, Telford gang will possibly be more disadvantaged than Aquinas' Colliver, Tarulli, Lambourn, Phelan, 'Livo' and Co. 'Kirky' has been on the quiet side in the last two games and the Blooders will be looking for a big game from him to get them firing . Yarra does have an edge in overall pace, which needs a firm surface for the best effect. Really the two sides are se closely matched it will come down to lucky bounces in the end . I'll say Aquinas by a few points, on the basis that they seem to be somehow more steady than Yarra, but then I haven't called too many right in this series! ! Reserves I thought I'd go for Aquinas in this one as well, since wins and losses have been going by clubs rather than teams, but Yarra was very impressive in () THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
the 2nd Semi and it is hard to see Aquinas finding the extra necessary to bridge the gap with what is a very good reserves side . Yarra by 2 goals.

E CENTRAL SECTION by Darren Brigg s SPORTSCOVE R L f ast week Williamstown CYMS dispelled once and or all a commonly held view of a large number of E Central followers - that the University Black's runnin g game would be near unstoppable given a dry, sunny day come finals time . What we all overlooked was the fact that Williamstown had established an important psychological edge with two home and away wins over the Blacks (in varying conditions) and the fact that on the day it is the team which is prepared to be first to the ball and win the hotly contested issues that will emerge victorious . The Blacks will again have to seek glory via their reserves grade unit while for CYMS, another chance at their first senior VAFA premiership in today's clash with the supremely confident Old Essendon . PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW
Seniors : Williamstown CYMS v University Blacks Williamstown reinforced their home and away dominance over Blacks in the first quarter where they outplayed an unsettled Blacks line-up all over the ground despite kicking into what appeared to be a 2-3 goal breeze . By quarter time, Willi were three goals up and had removed any doubts raised by their 2nd Semi defeat while on the other hand the Blacks had not built on the momentum of their easy win over North Brunswick. A brilliant goal to Willi's Bezzant early in the second term saw Willi go four goals up but for the rest of the quarter the Blacks lifted and began to show signs of their trade mark running game . Blacks rover Cunningham was starting to provide some mid field impetus but was let down by inaccurate forwards, most notably Planet Hall, whose kicking for goal was not in the same universe as the previous week . The stage was set for a Blacks surge after half time but it was Willi that took the initiative in the premiership quarter. On-ballers Grieve, Harry and Thege were harder at the pill than their Blacks' counterparts and their numerous possessions enabled crack Willi fullforward Kurkowski to boot four goals in the term as well as claiming mark of the day honours . The Blacks kept within 21 points at three quarter time but with rover Darroch benched and Hall being eclipsed, the margin looked formidable, particularly in this low scoring battle . The last quarter was predominantly goal for goal : Blacks U19 Henderson tried desperately to lift his side by taking a number of marks across half forward, but not enough of his more experienced teammates seemed able to answer the call . In the end, Willi advanced to the grand final 22 point winners . leaving the Blacks with what I suspect they will consider a fairly disappointing third place finish for season 1996 .
Best for the winners were rover Grieve, who won th e ball repeatedly in th e clinches, David Lee, Killer Kurkowski ( 6 goals), Noodlehead Thege, Dirty Harry and back pocket Griffiths while for the Blacks Radford was a tireless defender, S. Little marked well, Hendo at CHF showed the promise of years to come, while Wiegard and Bowles were serviceable contributors. Reserves: University Blacks v North Brunswic k In selecting North Brunswick to score an upset win in this game, I assumed that experienced North senior players dropping back would include Vin Lirosi and Paul Marin: I also assumed that North would focus its 100% commitment on the ball for the full four quarters . Lirosi and Marin didn't play, but in my second assumption was vindicated as North were far more committed than their younger Blacks opponents, with only North's inaccuracy restricting their lead to four goals at quarter time . Blacks kicked with the wind in the second term and after a couple of early goals, a change began to come over the game . Blacks were now first in for the ball and were running and handballing at every opportunity . North on the other hand seemed content to chase and tackle and with each Blacks goal, the tackles were tending to become a little later/cruder . It is history now that the Blacks rammed on fourteen unanswered goals in the second half as North were reduced to rabble, with a disappointing three reports souring things even further for the green and the gold. Best for the winners included Old Man Quilty, Keam at full forward, Cheese Dog and veterans Gull an and Hanlon . GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
Seniors : Old Essendon v Williamstown CYM S Old Essendon will start clear favourites to advance to D Grade today courtesy of their comprehensive seven goal triumph over Williamstown in the second semi final . However OEG Coach Alex Frazer will have stressed that Willi is a team of great character, commitment and talent that Oopy Elliott will have prepared capable of causing an upset at the tight confines of Glenferr :e Oval, which is likely to suit Willi a little more than the Gillon Oval . Old Essendon has a slight edge in skill and goalkicking power but there is no doubt in my mind it is the presence and ability of Luttersehmidt in the centre that makes this team . Willi have to make a decision on how to counter the OEG Powerhouse - play one of their own prime movers ( Thege, Harry, Grieve) in a negative role or perhaps give a physical assignment to a role player (Weary?) .
12 ÂŽ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
The other problem for Willi is how they will kick a winning score - five goals in the 2nd Semi was a worry . Kurkowski must look to lead out on Tommy Read instead of mark from behind, while I think on-ballers such as Harry and Thege should look to push into the forward line in order to increase the Cy's scoring options . Overall, I expect a closer result than last time but I can't help thinking that it is Old Essendon that have peaked at the right time and I think they will pack too many guns for a gallant Willi . Old Essendon by nineteen points . Reserves: Old Essendon v University Black s Last week's awesome display reinforced what I have thought all year - the Blacks are the best reserve grade side in E Central . OEG have the right to approach this attempt at back to back reserve flags with confidence given their 2nd Semi triumph over the Blacks but with the demise of their seniors last week, the Blacks already impressive line-up is likely to be bolstered by the acquisition of 4-5 very talented senior players . As such, I envisage Blacks will turn tables on Grammar in a high standard reserve grade clash . Blacks to make it five reserve flags in succession by four goals . E Central Dream Team
Here's my thoughts on a possible best twenty-one from E Central in 1996 . I'll be available for further discussions at the bar after the game . B: M. Sedgwick (UHSOB) S . Dunin (La Trobe) A . Traditional football boots with stops can be quite unstable . They can make turning difficult and increase the risk of knee and ankle injuries . So an Australian footballer and scientist pulled out all the stops to give you a boot with superior comfort, greater stability and surer grip when turning . The boot is Blades, with unique angled rubber ribs and a distinctive X-shaped heel support . Australian Design Award winners, Blades have won over the entire team at AFL side Footscray, the Victorian State Football League umpires, Socceroo captain Paul Wade and top Rugby League internationals . Also approved by the Australian Rugby Football Union, Blades offer a broader last .for Australian feet, an internal EVA wedge to lessen achilles strain and 3 sole types to suit any playing surface .
So try a pair of Blades . And take the greatest step forward in football boot technology for 25 years .

Congratulations are extended to St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield (C) and St . Leos WP Emmaus (D) on reaching their respective Grand Finals this weekend . Not only will they be playing off for pennants today, but both will be playing in new sections in 1997 . Well done to all concerned . Also to the competing E Section clubs Yarra Valley & Aquinas, Will iamstown & Old Essendon, and Powerhouse & Salesian, good luck to you all, obviously the ultimate prize awaits the winners of these respective sections with promotion to D Section for 1996 being such . #~# Well as the season comes together for the final crescendo I bet all avid TapOuts readers were wondering who had won the aptly named Connell Cup (being for Amateur Footballer scribes) . The final placings were as follows Darren Briggs (E Central, 89°10), Barry Hickey (E East, 84%), Damian Batey (E South) and Brett Connell (U19, 79%), Norm Nugent (Club

Congratulations to Darren Briggs on winning the tipping this season, and thank you to all of the scribes who have entertained us so far this season with your tips and reports, keep up the good work . fN# Tips for this weekends round of matches are follows, however I will not allow gambling to take effect as the CEO did last week . For pure tipping's sake the winners will be Collegians (A), Old Trinty (B), St. Kevins (C), St. Leos WP Emmaus (D), Yarra Valley (E East), Williamstown (E Central), Salesian (E South), Old Xavs (U19/1), St . COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by AFCANAFA
INTERVIEW WITH RODD MORGAN (AJAX SENIOR COACH 1996)
W thi both St Kevins and St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield today clashing for the C Section Premiership at Elsternwick Park, we ask AJAX Coach Rodd Morgan about his thoughts on coaching in the VAFA, his background in coaching, his highs and lows of 1996, his playing history and most importantly who will win today . BC: Rodd give the readers a little background into your own playing history and involvement in football. RM : (1) season Caulfield Grammar APS, (1) season Geelong (VFL), (1) season North Melbourne (VFL), (10) seasons Springvale (VFA) . I have been involved in Premierships at VFA level and was Chairman of Selectors (while still playing) with Springvale for ('I) season . I have always loved the game .
BC : While at Springvale who were your coaches? RM : Phil Fryer (1) Season, Phil Maylin (5) seasons, Bernie Sheehy (3) years, Michael Ford (1) season . BC : What influences have these coaches had on your philosophy and style of coaching (if any) ? RM : Michael Ford - be very well planned, Bernie Sheehy - known the opposition well, and have an overall plan, Phil Maylin - do as you say, Overall I found that all of my coaches have had an influence on my coaching philosophy, however I maintain that despite the undoubted knowledge of all of my coaches, the experiences I encountered this season have seen me learn much in a short space of time. BC : How would you describe your own coaching philosophy? RM : I have an overall vision of the "perfect game" then try to train and play to this ideal. Encourage players to play with maximum courage and effort. BC: How did you come to coach in the VAFA ?
RM: I played football at Springvale with marty Halphen, who asked me to consider coaching AJAX in the VAFA . Marty was going back to play at AJAX which was his junior club and I thought it was a terrific opportunity to get involved with coaching and the VAFA at a strong club . BC : Have you any advice for the player ending his career and thinking of taking up coaching ? RM : Always be well aware of the immense responsibility of being a coach as opposed to being a player . As a coach you have to consider the needs of (30) or so guys and not just yourself. When you are playing you are always con-
scious of the team aspects but from an individual perspective . In other words when you are playing you cannot worry about what your teammates are doing or not doing but you must add your little piece of the team concept. On the other hand coaching requires you to look at the team as a whole, and your immediate responsibility is every player collectively making up the team as opposed to being responsible for your own game as a player. Coaching has really made me look at football from bigger picture consequences (team plays), as opposed to the smaller picture theme of being a player . BC : What goals did you set yourself at the beginning of the season, both personally and from a team point of view ? RM: I used my previous coaches as role models and always set my sights on being well planned and professional at all times be it training or match days (personal), while our team goals were to improve on last year's team performance (ie . win more games, make the finals etc.) . Although we did not win as many games as last year, we made the finals but were unfortunately beaten by St . Kilda Sth . Caulfield who played extremely well on the day . BC : What difficulties have you encountered in being a first year coach? RM: Knowing how hard to train the players for this level of football, given work and family commitments at times would take precedence . Knowledge of opposition players at first was difficult as well . BC : Having now had (1) season of senior coaching experience under your belt is there anything that you would do differently next year (In terms of preparation, planning matchdays etc .)? RM : In hindsight I would be a little less technical pregame and keep it more simple and directional, and at training spend more time teaching individuals how to play certain positions and how to "set up" in specific situations . BC : What have been the highs in 1996 for Rodd Morgan from a coaching perspective ? RM : Definitely being (7) wins and (2) losses at the halfway mark of the season in my first year as a Senior Coach . Also being involved with such a passionate club really helped me to enjoy my year . BC : What have been the disappointments in 1996 from the same perspective ? RM : There is no doubt after turning 7/2 and then finishing 3/6 . Our second 1/2 of the year slide was terribly disappointing to myself, the club and all of the players . BC: Have you enjoyed your coaching in the VAFA this year and why ?
30 ÂŽ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
RM: I have enjoyed this year immensely . I think the relegation/promotion system promotes fabulous incentive for top and bottom teams alike . All games were played in fabulous spirit with plenty of spectator passion, and it was a terrific environment and atmosphere to be involved with. Be : In hindsight what have been some of the differences between the VFA coaching styles which you encountered as a player, and the style of coaching employed by VAFA Coaches which have been coached against this year? P,M : VFA Coaches tend to be quite technical with game plans, match-ups and styles of play, and expected the players to motivate themselves to a degree . I find it hard in commenting on the VAFA Coaches whom I have coached against this year due to the fact that the majority of my energy was focussed on my team, rather than the opposition's moves and match-ups . Be : As a coach how different were matchdays as compared to your playing days ? RM: Surprisingly similar. I found it important to prepare mentally for the game as coach in much the same way that a players needs to . You can certainly put as much emotional energy into the day as a coach as I did as a player. Be: What are the greatest attributes that a coach must have, in your opinion ? RM: You must have self belief I your team/game plan, which will see you exude confidence in your coachin g

I have also found that you must be consistent in everything you do and say, from training to match days, and by the same token you must be honest with yourself, the team and the club you are coaching, and finally to control your emotions in all aspects of coaching is at times the most difficult but at the same time so important in the whole scheme of things . Be: Do you have any future plans to coach at a higher level one day ? RM : I would love to get the opportunity to coach at a higher level, whether that be VAFA, VFL, VCFL or VMFL . Yes it is a goal of mine . Be: Name some of the better players you have seen in C Section this season. RM : Dollman, Brady (St . Kevins), Tkocz, Astapenko, Hayes-Dewar (St Kilda Sth . E SOUTH SECTION by Damien B atey
The home and away season is behind us, and after a fortnight of electrifying finals action onl y two sides remain, Power House an d Salesian wil l now duel for the ultimate honour, a premiership flag . REVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL With a loss against Power House last week, Peninsula were hoping to rectify themselves with a big win over Salesian . However, the signs looked ominous that this would be a real danger game for the Pirates, who had not beaten Salesian this year prior to last week's clash .
After Salesian's thrilling win over St . Pats a week earlier, it appeared as if they would have little in reserve after a taxing game. Instead, Salesian recorded a courageous four goal win over the Pirates . Although it was a relatively low scoring game, Salesian finished as the far more determined side . For Peninsula, a dominant season that saw them finish on top of the ladder, was finished in just two weeks . The Pirates will be gravely disappointed with their efforts, after having finished runners-up last year . In both finals that the Pirates played in this year, they were quite discernibly the weaker side . Peninsula continued persistence in making the finals each year, has failed to deliver the necessary results, and this year they will not even be playing in the grand final . Salesian has proved to be a stumbling block for Peninsula this year and now the Pirates have received the most telling blow . Salesian on the other hand, can be satisfied with their efforts this year, especially considering they finished third . REVIEW - RESERVE PRELIMINARY F INAL
Power House's success level this year is reflected in the performance of their reserves side . After having finished fourth, Power House defeated third placed St . Pats. Now after having vanquished Salesian by one goal, they have earned themselves a grand final berth . Salesian will be disappointed to have missed out but in a game so close as this preliminary final it is unfair to criticise the losing team .
~
PREVIEW - GRAND FINAL
The sides that wil l meet in the senio r
grand final today are Power House an d Salesian. It is surprising to see that last year's runners-up and this year's minor premiers Peninsula will not be playing. At the end of the home and away season, very little separated the top four sides . This is evidenced by the fact that the sides that finished second and third are playing in the final .
Both of these sides are very skilful, and have effective goal kicking forwards. Power House strength will be the drive of their on-ballers and centre half forward, McCulloch . Salesian will be hoping to counter Power House attack with a goal haul from forward Cincotta. Although Salesian have done extraordinarily well to come this far, it is difficult to see them winning . Power House have been quietly and gradually building towards this day and in doing so have not lost a game since the opening rounds of the season . Salesian on the other hand have been too easily exposed by both Power House and St . Pats this season. In their last meeting with Power House, Salesian were comprehensively beaten . On that occasion Salesian were favoured to win, but this time Power House are outright favourites . In the tradition of all Grand Finals, this will probably be a fantastic match . Hopefully, a close and entertaining match will be played today at Mordialloc . PREVIEW RESERVES GRAND FINAL
The season's most dominant seconds team Peninsula will meet with Power House . To reach a Grand Final from fourth spot is a great achievement for Power House but it does not necessarily mean they can win it. Peninsula have been by far the strongest side in the reserve grade this year . Their side is complemented by a number of players who are on the fringe of playing senior football for their club . Power House however do have a very determined side . The mair factor in Power Houses ability, is that they have wor two finals to reach the Grand Final by a combined winning margin of nine points. Their luck could rur out today .

onditions were blustery and with the surface hard and fast the day was set for an interesting tussle betwee n two very committed teams . It was Uni . Blues who jumped to an early lead after some fine on ball work by Fricker and Wilcox and although there was some (4) goals difference at 1/4 time the Old Melburnians had had much of the play early but had failed to capitalise significantly. Despite the scoreline the Blues had not begun well and the OM's were really taking the game up to the reigning Premiers . At 1/2 time again there was little in the match, and so the same went for the remaining (2) 1/4's, the blustery conditions of early in the day had subsided and players' fitness was now being called upon . In the finish it was the Blues by (33) points in a game played with much vigour, high skill and great spirit (both sides are to commended), with each side booting (9) goals after 1/4 time . The Blues were best served by Ryan, Roydhouse, Eastaugh and Nailon, with Halligan adding (6) goals to his season's tally of (85) . While the OM's had players such as Holme, Bunn, Bennett an d Bains battling hard all day, as to did Murray finishing with (6) in a fine display of forward work. Mark Zuker and the OM's can be well pleased with their efforts of 1996, they turned around and showed the form and commitment that was missing last year, and this augers well for the years ahead . Well done . DIVISION ( 2) WHITE PRELIMINARY FINAL
Warringal held Old Camberwell to only (2) goals in the first 1/4 while booting (1) themselves into the wind to trail by only (1) major at the first break . From here they added a strong (7) goals the 'Wellers (2) to hold a commanding lead at 1/2 time . The all important third 1/4 was the key and the Wellers attacked time and again but their inaccuracy was to be their downfall in the finish, still trailing at 3/4 time . The floodgates opened in the last and with the Redbacks sensing a place in the Section (2) White Grand Final they ran away in the final term having (16) shots to (3) to really crush the 'Wellers. O'Connell for the Redbacks at CHF was BOG taking many fine marks, kicking (2) goals himself and having a hand in many others . Also fine players for the Redbacks were Playfair (4), Williams and Hopkins, while for the Wellers Miles, Whitehead and Smith never gave in all day . For the 'Wellers a disappointing way to finish a solid year . To Andrew Tsindos and all of the Old Camberwell officials and players congratulations on reaching the finals and I have no doubt that once again in 1997 you will be up there at the finish. DIVISION ( 2) BLUE PRELIMINARY FINA L
Well my prediction looked home and hosed at 1/2 time of this match with Beaumaris leading comfortably after
having a brilliant second 1/4, but Kevin King and Mazenod had other ideas . The firs t 1/4 was an even affair with both teams coming to grips with the blustery conditions, and as it happened it was the Sharks who settled better with Fisher up forward proving a handful . However down at 1/2 time by (19) points and having struggled in the conditions it was the 'Nodders who fought back strongly in the 3rd term to lead by (1) point at 1/4 time . The match was to come down to the last 1/4 and what a marvellous 1/4 the 'Nodders played . They kicked (2) goals themselves and held the Sharks to only (1) point in what was an extremely tense last 1/4 for all concerned . In the finish it was the 'Nodders who were in front, and they advanced to the Grand Final against Old Brighton this week . The 'Nodders had outstanding players in Hemmerich, Dunne, Cianeio, Johnson and Kelly, with Occhiuto and Di Scala adding their own touch of magic to the game . Whereas the Sharks best were Fisher (5), Pitts, Mclvor and Wadham, but in the wash-up the day belonged to the 'Nodders. The Sharks would be wondering what went wrong after leading at 1/2 time but their season did fall away in the last 1/2 and their form had dissipated compared to the other sides above them . To Peter MeBrearty and the players commiserations, and I hope to see you all again next year . DIVISION (2) RED PRELIMINARY FINAL
Whitefriars came out steaming against Old Scotch and after kicking poorly in the first 1/4 should have been well ahead at 1/4 time . They came out in the second and dominated proceedings again and at 1/2 time led well by some (40) points . The Scotchies came out and gave it their best shot in the 3rd term, but found the 'Friars too much to handle . Although in the second 1/2 the Scotchies booted (5) goals to the'Friars (6), the damage had been done and it was the 'Friars who rolled on to win comfortably in the finish . The 'Friars were well served by the consistent A . Pawlick, D. Fedele, Gillan, Winterburn and A . Davis, while for the Scotchies none were better than Thomas, Gywnn, Davis and Panton (4) . Steve Aird and all of the Old Scotch players can be well heartened by their performances this year . They have been in the top bracket of sides in the Red Section and have proved this across the season, and I have no doubt will look forward to 1997 with relish . Well done to you all . PREVIEW OF TODAY'S GAMES Division One
Grand Final - Uni . Blues versus Old Xaverians (Scammell Reserve 2pm) So the two best sides in Section 1 meet today and what a game it should be . The Xavs inflicting the Blues' only loss for approximately (2) seasons last time they met, and it was not just a win but an almighty thrashing. However befor e &% T4.lC AAADTCI IQ ClV1TRGI i FR Yo4F.
that encounter it was the Blues who had reigned supreme, winning both encounters well this season and having the wood over Xavs . Today is the final game of the season and so much hinges on this result, and neither Pat Hawkins or Steve Carroll would need reminding of that . The Blues last week took some time to shake off a very determined OM's unit, and their starts would still be giving Steve Carroll some headaches, for if today they allow the Xavs to jump away as they did in the second - semi their goal of back-toback Section 1 Premierships could well be ruined . By the same token Xavs must be aware that the Blues had a solid hitout last week against a good opposition and finished with a little left in the tank, and they would not want to be taken lightly today . Last time the teams met Donati with (10) twins was easily the difference and with Woodruff, Jones, Heil an d Adami firing the Xavs were too strong . It will be interesting whether any of the Blues' seniors qualified namely Beltrame, an d Wilcox, and along with Ryan, Eastaugh and Versteegan will need to be on song today to give themselves a chance . Coughlan, Ford and J . McDonald will be required by Xavs seniors so this will lessen Steve Carroll's match-ups slightly, but the overall Xavs talent will trouble the Blues . Halligan must fire up forward and do a lot more work when the ball hits the ground to, give his smaller players, Hue, Kelly and Brockley more opportunity to score goals . The difference in any final will be the side that takes the initiative early and is able to handle the pressure that all finals matches possess. Good luck to both teams today, however my tip is the Xavs by less than a kick . Selection : Old Xaverians Division (2) White Grand Final - St . Kevins versus Warringal (Timber Ridge 11 .30am)
For the third time this season these two sides meet and on both occasions it has been the SKOBS who have come out on top . In Round 6 at home they thumped Warringal, but in the second 1/2 of the season the Redbacks hit back going down by (20) points in a low scoring affair . Today will be a different kettle of fish, both teams have won their finals matches well, without really dominating the matches played . The SKOBS have had the bye and will be fresh and raring to go, the Redbacks on the otherhand have had two solid hitouts against Uni . Blacks and Old Camberwell and despite winning well on the scoreboard were always having to work . Both sides have potent forwards in Playfair, J . Anderson and O'Connell ( Warringal) and Marusie, Greenham and Gargano (SKOBS), and all will need to be guarded closely today . Key players for the Redbacks will no doubt be Captain Harte, Woodluck, Rossimel and Attardi with surprise packets like Yin, Peters an d Wason always dangerous on their day . The Redbacks will also be sweating on Kinnear being available as well after being reported last weekend . By the same token the SKOBS boast oodles of talent, and it is hard to go past Captain Rizzio, Pivetta and Livy, with Large, Ku ri ng, Quirk and Delahay forever headaches for the opposition weekly . Knowing both Owen Hourigan and Harry Harisiou well they will reinforce to their players the importance of coping with finals pressure and the need for cool heads at all times, in what will be a ferocious contest between two very evenly matched sides the SKOBS will start favourites and will win today, but by no more than (2) majors . Best of luck to both sides on the dav . (D THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
Selection: St . Kevins Division ( 2) Blue Grand Final - Mazenod versus Old Brighton (Scammell Reserve 11 .30am)
Obviously past history meant nothing two weeks ago when Old Brighton stormed all over a flagging Mazenod to gain automatic entry into the Grand Final today, for the 'Nodders before that match had had the wood over the "formers defeating them twice during the year . Last week the 'Nodders showed fantastic resolve, down at 1/2 time but not out of the contest they re-grouped and played a terrific brand of team football in the second 1/2 to overrun a very determined Beaumari s outfit. Both coaches are astute thinkers, Leigh Bowes would be well aware that Hemmerich last week played the game of his life in the ruck and was well supported by Cianeio, Dunne and Kelly . He would also have had first hand experience of the team lifting performances Oechiuto, Young and Le Grand are capable of. Although the 'Nodders forward set-up looks awkward they still score freely, and with a solid defence led by Paolucei the Tonners forwards will have to be on their game today. On the other side of the coin Kevin King will be well aware of the fact that the °Ponners possess a terrific leader in Paterson, who has been well supported by Price, Lewis, Alderson, Rhodes and Parnham throughout the season, not forgetting the likes of Brown, Williams or McGuigan who if given free licence will cut any opposition to pieces . The match will be of high standard on a very firm surface, and I lean towards the 'Tonners after having a week off and winning well last time the two sides met, but the 'Nodders fighting qualities impressed me no end last week and it would not surprise to see them take this off either. Selection : Old Brighton Division (2) Red Grand Final - Old Carey versus Whitefriars (Timber Ridge 2pm) The score stands at three wins to the OC's and zip to the 'Friars, but then again it is a Grand Final and who knows what can happen. Last time the OC's met the 'Friars their lst 1/4 was the difference and today Andy Dalrymple will no doubt emphasise the importance of a strong start by the 'Friars . A strong start is what they will need and after a confidence boosting demolition of Old Scotch last week the OC's would need to be on their guard today. Peter Schiller will be well aware that the Pawlicks, Fedele and Winterburn are in fine touch for the 'Friars, add to these players the likes of Vandenbloom, Jongebloed, Lacey, Davis and Tartaglia and the 'Friars have talent abounding which on their day could prove very damaging for the OC's if left to run free . But as we speak Andy Dalrymple must be putting plans into action for the quelling of the likes of Oppy, Sali, Murphy and Collins, and it would also be foolish to not be conscious of the fact that on their day Detarczynski, Hendricks, Spencer an d Costello will cut a side to ribbons if given a chance . All in all this match will be a lot closer than the previous three outcomes but I cannot go against the OC's who will win today and become Premiers and Champions of Section (2) Red for 1996, but not by more than (4) goals . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 19E
nS > EDITORIAL - Continued from Page 1
new Club is selected as being suitable for "E" Grade . Clubs will be advised that the Club finishing third and fourth may not gain promotion if New Clubs are graded as being suitable . For this to occur club members will have to vote in a rule change (rule 13) giving the Executive the discretion to bring in a new club(s) at E section level ie not the Association's lowest section. t the end of the 1997 season including finals, the following will be the basis for the way we structure the Grades for 1998 . n"D" Grade in 1997 clubs to understand that : Two Grand Finalists will be promoted to C and 2 relegated from "C" . ~ Only 9th and 10th will be relegated . (This will now leave 8 Clubs) ÂŽ The three Premiers will be promoted from each of the three 1997 "E" Grades (11 Clubs) . The fourth Club to be promoted will be based on the following after consideration is given to each of the following criteria in turn until one club only remains . 1 . Played in a Grand Final in 1997 and lost. (3 Clubs in the running ) 2 . Highest finishing team from the end of the home and away season. 3 . The number of wins in season 1997 .
Edited by Phil Stevens 4 . The lowest losing margin in the Grand Final played . 5 . Percentage after the home and away season (And if still equal) . 6 . The 1996 results based on the above formula . This will leave 12 Clubs then for the 1998 structure in D" Grade. he Two "E" Grades for 1998 (10 in each) will then be made up of sides that finish 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th (3 x 5 = 15) . Plus 2"D" Grade relegated Clubs and 2 losing Grand Finalists not promoted (19 Clubs) . he twentieth Club will be based on the best per formed 8th finishing club in the three "E" 1997 Grades on a similar formula to that used for promoting the best losing Grand Finalists . Grade (on present numbers) will then have eight clubs . With the prospect of two new applicants and possibly Hawthorn Citizens advancing from the Club XVIII .
The Executive hopes clubs embrace the new format and see that the 1997 will be full of interest as clubs will continue to jockey for positions throughout the whole season for their 1998 starting position . Finally I'll put another $50 at risk. $50 on the bar for the players of the club winning by the highest margin this weekend if I don't pick 8 out of the 11 senior and U19 matches . My tips : Collegians (A), Old Trinity (B), St Kevins (C), St Leo's Emmaus (D) - sorry Keith, Yarra Valley (E East), Williamstown CYMS (E Central), Salesian OC (E South), University Blues (U19/1), Warringal (U19/W), Mazenod (U19/B) and Old Carey (U19/R) .
CLUB RUNNERS, WAPE" CARRIERS, TRAINERS (FINALS) On Monday night the Executive asked me to convey to all clubs still participating in finals the following in relation to water carriers, runners and trainers . The same message has been given to all umpires and a memo written to club secretaries . 1 . Any VAFA appointed umpire is to warn once only any water carrier, runner or trainer who is not carrying out their specific duty only. After one warning the offending official is to be ordered from the field and cannot be replaced .
2 . The field umpires are to speak to each club's water carriers, runner and trainers before each match in relation to (1) above . 3 . Any of the above officials incorrectly attired are to be ordered from the field until they are correctly attired . 4 . The emergency umpire to be the dominant person in controlling (1) and (3) above as the othe r umpires may miss these details as they are concentrating on the players and the play . P. Stevens, VAFA C .E.O . 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996
