A GREAT r,:1G"4`-1T WAS HAD BY ALL ast Monday's Vote Count Evening held at the Carlton Crest Hotel was a huge success . A number of special guests of the Association were present : The Minister for Sport and Racing Tom Reynolds ; Ms Judith Watt, Executive Director of the Quit Campaign (The VAFA's major sponsor) ; Mr . Bill Carroll, Chairman of the Victorian Football League; Mr Peter Ryan, President of FIDA ( Football Integration Development Association) ; representatives of the VAFA's sponsors - George Janko (McKinnon Sports Medicine), Peter Nash and Brian Woodhead (Sportscover) along with various members of the media . Most importantly all of the VAFA clubs were represented by their officials and players and it was for the players in particular that this type of night is organised for - the ackowledgement of the best players from the season just gone. thought the night was a wonderful evening, given a real football flavor by the gust appearance of Mike Brady who told us what we already know - that there is a little bit ( a huge bit I would suggest) of Cazaly in us all!! The Footy Show song tells us that it is "more than a game" - it is, but we should never lose sight of the fact that it is a game basically and although the stakes are high, the ability to lose well is just as deserving of a pat on the back as the pat on the back for the winners . onday night's winners were :- Peter O'Brien (Old Melburnians), Jason Reddick (Therry) ; Marcus "I've still got a headache" Dollman (St .Kevins) ; Mark Koppens (St .Johns) ; Fraser MacVean (Yarra Valley) ; Mark Sedgwiek (UHSOB) ; "Lethal" Leigh Murphy (Elsternwick) from the senior sections and the under 19 winners Andrew Moore (De La Salle) ; Paul Greenham (St . Kevins) ; Murray Pitts (Beaumaris) ; Stephen Collins (Old Carey) and finally the Club XVIII winners Glenn Cox (Marcellin) and Anthony Landrigan (Old Xaverians) . Congratulations to each winner . A special pictorial display will be presented in next week's final edition of the "Amateur Footballer" for the season which should prove to be a collectors' item for all clubs and especially the players.

M

e6 iss of Death" tevens ha s dealt another blow to some clubs .Last wee k I wrote that if I didn't pick 8 out of the 11 winners I would give another $50 for after match drinks to the club that won by the highest margin ( the weekend previously I had to fork out $50 to StKilda South Caulfield) . Well last weekend I scored 4 only - Collegians, Old Trinity, St . Kevins and Salesian OC and I have to payout to Old Xaverians under 19's as their section one team won by 44 points (highest winning margin) . he well has run dry this week so I'll just throw in my tips . Old %averlans to overcome Old Melburnians in a game that will go right down to the last minutes . Xavs to win by 4 points and earn another crack at Collegians in the big one . In B section Old Brighton to cause an upset and win by 20 points and earn the right to meet Old Trinity in next week's Grand Final . est of luck to all and thanks to everyone who Bmade the week just gone so memorable .

COLLEGIANS PASS FIRST TEST FIGHTBACK TIMES FOR OLD XAVS

C

ollegians, in a tough hard-at-the-footy effort, se t Old Xavs back with a ten point win at E Park last Sunday and confirmed their status as the favourites for this year's flag. Xavs, after taking all before them in the second half of the year, now face the daunting task of defeating Old Melburnians who are ominously driving forward at the right end . The Lions emerged from the battle with not too many scars, but a report to one of their key players, Darren Peters . The outcome of the tribunal hearing will have a distinct bearing on the Lions' premiership hopes . Xavs, on the other hand, had injured Dominic Berry, Andrew Brushfield an d Dan Richardson off the ground at siren time and a question mark on their fitness and other's for today's match . OM's are waiting in the wings with a full list to choose from . But Xavs haven't cant the right of challenge for nothing, and the back-to-back scent is still strong in their nostrils . So down to another cut throat contest. Both clubs have earned their chance the hard way and both also had nightmare periods during the season . At 5pm today a dream will come true for only one . That dream a crack at the resting Lions . REVIEW

Slippery conditions with the ball at the foot of the deck and hard bodies, low down were going to decide last week's contest . Collegians had too may of them . If it wasn't Darren Baxter throwing himself into it or Gabe Deane-Johns growing in confidence, it was the irrepressible Darren Peters creating options further up field together with the Galbraith/Thomson combination lurking nearby . It was the Collegians onballers who were the difference in this match . Too many backline mistakes early by Xavs which let the Lions in for a four goals to two lead at quarter time. But Collegians threw away a golden opportunity in the second quarter as they consistently drove the ball forward through the agency of Baxter an d Peters for 15 minutes but with little reward . At least Brock Mooney's goal on the siren took the Lions to a twenty point lead . Xavs cranked it up in the third quarter and Richardson an d Tim Ockleshaw goaling Xavs pulled it back to only nine points deficit at three quarter time . Some solid efforts by Wood, Sassi and Di llon in a late match comeback gave Xavs a chance at the 22 minute mark of the last quarter . But Collegians held out to record a tough win by 10 points from an injury depleted Xavs team at the finish. 2

PREVIEW Always easy to

select the loser out of the second semi to be the first out of the prelim. Week's break, injury free for the first semi winner and the loss out of the second semi is still fresh in the minds, so a tendency to avoid the big picture . Not sure whether much can be extracted from the two meetings during the year . Round One back in April, OM's a 27 point win as the Redlegs opened their six game winning streak against a Xavs who had a new coach and playing personnel . Round 10, Xavs were just on the cusp and the start of their successful run home to second spot, while OM's were fumbling and bumbling around and their fourth loss in a row. Xavs by almost 14 goals at Toorak Park . The question is : can Xavs bounce back? Any shots left in the locker or has the effort of second spot left the cupboard bare? Will newcomers Hawkins/ Brennan or Petroff measure up for another tough finals contest? David Strooper and Simon Bromell when in tune will be a difficult combination for any backline to handle and throw in Ian McMullin for some flair and the recipe is on the boil . Andrew Thompson and Micah Berry will create problems around the ball placing pressure on Simon Wood an d Andrew Dillon. No, it's OM's to challenge Collegians for the right to grasp the Adamson Cup . The stretch of wins has been too long for Xavs and the shock of the loss last week plus injuries to key players will leave them short of a grand finals berth . No, it's OM's to move forward to challenge the might of Collegians for the flag . B SECTION by Paul Luby

inity took all the honours last weex at tne Sandringham Oval by pulling away in the secon d half to record a 22 point victory over Parade and in doing so earned all the rewards . Promotion to a grade, the weeks rest and the chance to play in a premiership are now all Trinity's and it's left to either Brighton or Parade to join them next week . Trinity were a bit more polished in their disposal than Parade and a lot more desperate when it came to the so called "one precenters" that being the ability to tackle and smother when required . How quickly it changes with Parade needing to regroup for this weeks clash and Brighton sure to be confident after a weeks break . It all makes for an interesting weekend of footy . REVIEW OF THE 2ND SEMI FINAL

Perfect ground conditions greeted the players at Sandringham last week but the wind was blowing a gale and it was to make shooting for goal difficult all day . As predicted Trinity brought back Hatfield, Anderson, Van Der Hoek whilst Parade included Boyd, Cosgriff & Kerr . It was a typical fierce opening to a final with both sides hard at the ball and putting plenty of pressure on the man with the ball . Trinity suffered a blow when Jamie Stickland had to leave the field after a bone jarring bump from Paul Zappa and at the quarter time siren it was all level . The damage in the Phillips brothers were causing some Trinity forward line and likewise Aiden Boyd for Parade . The intensity continued in the second term with both sides scoring 3 goals and maintaining the pressure on each other . Sutcliffe was starting to show his class on his wing for Trinity and on two occasions he made tremendous dashes down his wing but he just missed the goals . Boyd, Harrison and Kerr all converted for Parade in this quarter although the Trinity defence through Norman, Sueling and Glass were all very good at winning the loose ball and setting up the play further down the field . Trinity went to the half time break with a slender 3 point lead . The on ball clashes were close with Ramsden v O'Loughlin, Dalrymple v Vincent and Bladeni v Ciavola all breaking even in the first half. The Carlton sides of the early eighties were famous for making the 3rd quarter the 'premiership' quarter and it was here that Trinity took over the game and set up their win . Ramsden went to CHF, Lea Taylor and Dalrymple won a couple of vital centre bounces and the result was 4 unanswered goals to Trinity as they skipped away to a 29 point lead by the 10 minute mark . The conditions had deteriorated with the rain making the ball harder to grab but Trinity were able to lift the tempo and pressure when required and Parade were not quick enough in either mind or body to go

with them . Sutcliffe was the inspiration as he continued hi s "Manassa" runs dow n the wing but unlike the 2nd term he didn't miss the goals and even though Harford kicked a beauty for Parade late in the quarter it was Trinity who had opened up a match winning 4 goal break . Mal Cumming was more then breaking even with Harrision at this stage even though "Harro" had 3 goals to his credit whilst Heighton was having the better of Mulligan when he was in attack . The 4th term was a slog for players on both sides as the hard running and tackling of the first 3 quarters started to take effect . Parade had the ball in the forward line for most of the first 10 minutes but the Trinity back line was standing firm as the tackles and in particular the smothers continued to mount in number . Harrison got 2 more goals for Parade in this quarter but clever goals to the Trinity duo of Van Der Hoek and Anderson, with an intercept in the goal square, shut the door on Parade and Trinity ran out deserving 22 point winners . It was a pretty even performance from the Trinity boys with all of their players contributing throughoul the day but as mentioned earlier Sutcliffe was thE unanimous choice for best on ground . His ability te deliver the ball with precision to his teammates witl either hand or foot whilst under pressure was fantastii and his numerous dashes into the forward line thi highlight of the day . The rock solid defence o Cumming, Sueling, Norman and Heighton were dis ciplined all day as they continually punched fror behind and then one clear, created the options fc each other. R. Phillips was a livewire all day in the f owardlinethsgvnbrandofty Ramsden did well in the ruck early and then was th catalyst at CHF in the third quarter . For the 3rd time this year Parade were able i match Trinity for 3 quarters but not for the who game and the result was the same . Parade gave it real shake for the first half but as they plenty of pla ers who were playing in their first senior final ser . Boyd was a markiritheywlbrfoun options all day across half forward and his 3 goals w , a fair return for his efforts . Vincent, Zappa at Ciavolu won plenty of possessions and were still ru ning late in the game whilst Harrison did well with goals . The Parade backline were solid for most of t' day and Farrell, Dallas and Digney can be proud their efforts . PREVIEW OF PRELIMINARY FINAL I believe the preliminary final in B Section ea year is one of the toughest games for any of the play( CA THF AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 19

involved in amateur footy . I know that's a big call but let's look at what is at stake: the winner gets promoted to A grade (the dream of all B section clubs) and also gets the chance to win a premiership . Whilst the loser of the game feels like they have achieved nothing as they remain in B Section and lets face it who remembers who finished third on the ladder. So the players from both clubs will be flat out today trying to win for themselves and their respective clubs . Parade have accounted for B righton on both occasions this year with a 53 point win at Bundoora and a 13 point win at Elsternwick Park in a low scoring affair . I expect today's result to be closer still as Brighton will be on a high after their win over Therry and Parade need to get over the disappointment of last week and concentrate on this week . Brighton are too good a side for Parade to be thinking ahead and Dale McCann will need to have his boys switched on . I believe the forwards of both sides hold the key to the game as players from either team have the ability to win the game from their own boots. Harrison (89 goals), Kerr (54) with Boyd and Mulligan are the main focal point for Parade whilst Hayden, Murch (57) and Perry are dangerous for Brighton . How each coach goes about countering these players will be vital to the outcome . Alderton, Alderson and Fildes have been good all year in defence for Brighton and they will need to be disciplined all day today for the team to win . Likewise Parade defenders Farre ll, Da ll as and Bellis will need to win their positions . I believe the sides are evenly matches across the centre and onball with Brighton players Pryor, Nikas, McLachlan and Rickerby the players to watch and Vincent, Ciavola, Swindon an d Pannam hard workers for Parade . It will be close and it will be tense but I believe Parade can move into the ground final by 10 points . Guest Tipsters Rick Brockwell picks Brighton by 13 points, Dennis Castaldi tips Parade by 20 points and Jason "B&F" Reddick picks Parade by 8 points .

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996 5

C SECTION by Terry Quirk

fter 44 barren years, St Kevins Old Boys A Football Club (known by most with much affection as SKOBs), won its first C Section flag in Amateur football last Saturday at headquarters . 1996 has been a sensational year for SKOBs with the celebration of its 50th year as a VAFA club, winning both Senior and Under 19 premierships and having a record number of players wear the blue green and gold . Firstly congratulations to the men in the engine room, very capably led by Tim "President Pup" Corrigan and Steve Browne, with a committee of young and not so young personnel that gave 1996 season a "red hot go" . To the coaching staff most professionally led by Tim Hart, Adrian Giffin, Glenn Taylor and Owen " O' Who?" Hourigan, with support from "Titch" Callinan, Bobby Hawkins, Rob Fuller, Justin O'Connor and many others, well done, the hard work and long hours were well rewarded . The faceless people behind the scenes providing first class support led of course by Bob Warner, Elise, Viv and Joel did a fine job . Finally, but most importantly, congratulations to all players who ensured the dream was realised . The commitment to the cause since the first training run in December 1995 has been most worthwhile . REVIEW 1996 C SECTION GRAND FINAL

Played in near perfect conditions, this match had everything. Both teams were extremely well prepared and obviously both camps had done their homework with almost all players being involved in a match-up of some description . SKOBs appeared to have the first quarter breeze and would have been concerned at the first break that the Saints had done better and looked the better side to that stage . The second quarter was a surprise to may with the SKOBs on-ballers, Dollman, Bowles, Brady and Moore taking the ball fonvard on numerous occasions for conversions by "Buckets" Ryan and Sam Gribble . The Saints guns, led by Hayes Dewar, Tkocz, Astapenko and the Ryans, had their hands full in the quarter struggling to stem the tide . With Andrew "BOG" Varasdi doing a fine job on "Sink" Gardner and Robert Gross frustrating Tony Riddell at every opportunity, the SKOBs had winners in the key defensive positions. The tall and the short, " Big Ben" Garvey on one wing and "Huddo" ("Vodka Man") Farquarson on the other, were avenues for the SKOBs that the Saints were working hard to cover. No game is won at half time and the Saints were fired up by Terry Walsh to hit the ground running and eliminate the 28 point deficit . The SKOBs had other ideas and with "Bomber" Burden (what do I have in common with Derek Kickett), Shane fi

Kennedy, the Hart Boys, "Tim , Nick and Andrew" an d

"Iceman" Morga n coming into the game, the lead increase to 42 points at the last break . bfihaljevic and "Ozzie" O'Sullivan gave their all for the Saints but the bird did appear to have flown as the fat lady began to gargle. In the final stanza, the Saints hit back hard and showed why they were grand finalists and why they were a powerhouse in this Section . Four goals to the scoreboard end gave supporters some hope as the SKOBs played a little defensive to ensure the day was saved . Terzini, Chapman, Brendan Kennedy held the defence together, whilst lion-hearted "Jungle Jim" Macey and Tony (I'm 29 and loving it) Mount had to pull out something extra to ensure victory. For the Saints, Murrihy, Leroy and Andy McGraw, Claxton, Herian, Neeson and Govan, after great efforts in the finals series, gave their all and must have been extremely disappointed after two super efforts in the earlier finals . The fat lady sang the first note of "Skobietta" as the siren sounded and a huge throng of little SKOBs, big SKOBs, Skobettes and those that appreciated a top game of footy, invaded the arena . President, Rod D'Zilva an d Secretary Paul Howard, are to be congratulated on the season of St Kilda/South Caulfield, who despite a bad fall at the last hurdle, were always in the race in 1996 and played the game in a way that was a credit to the Club and to Amateur Football . RESERVES GRAND FINA L

Marcellin finished off the season in fine style with a 21 point win over Ajax who were gallant in defeat . The Jackas gave the Eagles a big fright and took a 6 point lead at half time . Jamie Golds an d Marcus Gill were in everything for Marcellin with Wallis (2 goals), Cambers, Colussi and Howe being named amongst the best . The second half belonged to Marcellin which won the "premiership" quarter and went to a 20 point lead at the last change. Both sides are to be congratulated on a fine game of reserves footy . After 17 weeks atop the Reserves ladder, it may have been an injustice for this side not to take the flag. Well done Eagles but full marks to the Jackas who lifted when the odds were against them . Umpires : After a big year and hundreds of kilometres, the umpires are rewarded with selection in grand finals . To Wayne Hinton and Anthony Damen in the field, Andrew Pritchard and Glen Drummond around the perimeter and the goalies . Bernie Jephson and Michael Richardson, congratulations on the selection by your peers for the C M

Section Grand Final, and may you continue to be part of VAFA football for years to come . Correspondents : Thanks to Paul Howard (SKSC), Anthony Morgan (SKOBs), Lewis O'Flynn (Marc) and John Brunstan (Ajax) for your excellent contributions in 1996. Epilogue : I have enjoyed putting pen to paper on Monday nights and coming up with something of interest . To all at VAFA headquarters, Phil, Sue, Brett and Amy your efforts are to be commended . To "Schweppes" who have sponsored the C Section pages this year, your support is very much appreciated . I have enjoyed my small contribution to Amateur football and wish all 1996 players an enjoyable summer .

GRAND FINAL REVIEW (7 SEPTEMBER) SENIORS - MONASH BLUES V ST LEO'S EMMAUS

n good conditions at Central Reserve and aided by a strong "Norwesterly" the Two Blues failed to capitalise and went into quarter time level pegging with Monash who had defended resolutely throughout the term. In the 2nd, Monash fired up with the breeze with a great display of free flowing, running football to break the game open and hold a decisive 15 point half time advantage. A 5 minute deluge and a sudden drop in the wind turned the game into a slog making scoring very difficult and Monash gained further ascendancy to go into the lemon break 21 points ahead and staring the 'Flag' in their faces . Conditions improved in the last stanza with Monash continuing to play top running football kicking 4 straight 'majors' to the Leo's 3 goals 1 point to run out eventual winners by 26 points. St Leo's put up a terrific effort with their best being Kuta, Raffs, Don Dini and Pitch whilst for Monash they were content to settle on naming every man, women and child who assisted in their efforts throughout the year! Well Done Monash Blues and especially to the 'Professor' an d 'Doc' Rogers . RESERVES - MONASH BLUES V ST LEO'S EMMAUS Kicking with the assistance of the strong breeze, Monash Blues were fairly well restricted and led at quarter time 16 points to nil . In the 2nd the Monash guys really opened up and went on a scoring spree bagging majors at will and holding the Leo's to a solitary point . A 41 point advantage at the long interval meant the game was as good as over . Just to make certainty of it the Monash side extended their lead throughout the 3rd to an unassailable 77 point lemon time lead. Whilst outscoring Monash in the last result was never in doubt and the Monash Blues accorded a well deserved victory. Best for St Leo's were Gilly, Peter Murphy, Matty '0' and 'Big' John.

VAFA VOTE COUNT Congrats to the tallest D Section player this season Mark Koppens (St . Johns OC) who last Monday won the 1996 D Section Medal. E EAST SECTION by Barry Hicke y

scoring 3 .3 to Aquinas' 2 .0, but the latter were 13 points up at the long break , and seemed to have their opponent's measure . The heavy shower during half time did not augur well for a Yarra Valley comeback and the breeze had dropped a notch or two, but after 10 hard fought minutes goals to Dodwell and Smill ie had reduced Yarra' deficit to 3 points . Whelan gave the Blooders some breathing space by goaling from a snap 2 minutes later, only to see Dodwell goal again in minute 14. This segment of football was the toughest of the game, played at a fierce peace, and ferociously contested, it was the moment of truth for both teams . Livo, with great skill in a busy piece of ground play, scored a crucial major in the 17th minute . Then for ten long minutes the ball went like a table tennis ball And I thought the field umpires for both Grand between the two defences, before Livo took a well Finals - Heath Little, Darren Dalgleish, Wayne Henry judged mark and kicked truly from 50 metres out . Kirky had was favoured by the wind, but the first major came dominated in the ruck this term, giving Dunne, who cut Old Carey to ribbons Cultrera, from young Whelan and Lamborn space in which to take the ball the week before, putting through a great snap from into attack, regardless of the wind . Given the recurring rain in the week prior, the ground could easily have been worse, but it was disappointing that two such fine teams would not have a consistent surface on which to display their skills. A words of thanks to the VAFA Duty Officers during our finals series : Richard Evans, Peter Harris, David Cook, Ian Munro and Tony Orchard ; were efficient and helpful . And to Phil Stevens, Sue Anderson, Brett Connell and Amy Stanyer, once more a year of help and support, all delivered with a cheery politeness, even to hoary old intransigents like me .

and his Committee, Brett Davidson and his player, all the club helpers and supporters, heartiest congratulations, and thank you for a wonderful year . The hard working term of Yarra Valley, while temporarily setback, can look forward to many years of success in the near future. They have a gifted team and steadfast, vocal supporters, which no ambitious club can do without . Congratulations to Fraser MacVean of Yarra Valley, whose magnificent play during the year won him the Section Best and Fairest by two points from that other talented on-baller, Justin Carusi of Chirnside Park. Plaudits also to the one and only Jason Livingstone of Aquinas, who took out the Section goalkicking award and topped the ton for the season in spite of missing so many games through injury . Reserves Yarra Valley kicked to the scoreboard end with the roaring forties behind them and could manager only 1 .7 for the quarter. But they did keep Aquinas scoreless . The second term saw torrid defence supreme and Yarra did well to old a 10 point lead to half time . Yarra finessed themselves out of their handy lead during the third quarter, whereas the Blooders stuck to a simple, direct way of going, which had the scores level at the last change . The last term was a ripper . Aquinas lead early, Yarra fought back to lead by a goal, then the Blooders equalled, and at the 15 minute mark were a goal up . Yarra attacked relentlessly, but Aquinas inched away to 9 point lead. Not to be denied Yarra came back with a goal and a point in the dying moments, but too late, the Blooders had the first of their two flags for the day.

Tn what was by far the 'pick' of the 1996 E Central final series, Old Essendon earned promotion to D Grade for 1997 by prevailing over a gallan t Willi amstown CYMS by nine points. The premiership victory represented Old Essendon's eighth win in succession, testament to the fact that the Grammar were the side that peaked at the right time of the year, helped no doubt by their almost non-existent injury list in the months of August and September . They should prove a force in D Grade in 1997, particularly should their elevation be accompanied with a continued trickle of talent from Ken Fletcher 's highly rated PEGS schoolboy outfit . For CYMS, a bitter pill to swallow as they search for their elusive first VAFA flag . If they maintain the nucleus of their maturing young U19 talent, I suspect they will again be there in the last Saturday of E Central for 1997 . GRAND FINAL REVIEW Seniors : Old Essendon v Willi amstown CYMS Glenferrie Oval was in excellent conditions for the big clash which played in overcast but thankfully dry conditions . Drama from the first bounce when Willi 's man-onman tactics were not welcomed by the men in white . Three questionable frees in succession resulted in Clohesy kicking OEG's first from point blank range . A quick reply to Willi's Bezzant was soured when CYMS prime mover Kurkowski was sent-off after a scuffle in the Willi goalmouth . Despite playing with seventeen men, CYMS began to take control . Aided by the slight breeze, mid-fielders Grieve, Thege and Harry were dominant and Cook was providing an excellent target across half forward . Willi 's second came from a huge left foot snap by Langham. Herbertsen then marked for Willi and his kick found Grigg who kicked Willi's third . Two excellent tackles by Jack Daniel were rewarded and his kick from 35m saw Willi go three goals up . Willi were winning the greater share of the hard ball . OEG hit-back as John Paris took a good grab at CHF. His long kick saw a free to teammate Merrington (for holding?) - the best converter in E Central had no problems bringing up OEG's second . Willi's Bezzant, having a good battle with OEG President cum back-pocket McKenzie, was freed and his long kick saw CY young gun Aaron Thege soar high in the goalsquare to pluck Mark of the Day - he kicked Willi's fifth to give his team a three goal advantage at quarter time. OEG master tactician Alex Frazer swung the moves in the second quarter : tags were placed on Grieve (Chapman) and Thege ( O'Brien) with great effect, a reconstructed half back line of Magee, Bishop, Heater and Lukasz to CHF also were good moves . Bishop and Lukasz also added vigour - both involved in incidents early in the 2nd term and luckily not to be sin-binned .

11

Kurkowski missed from close-in after an excellent mark . McPherson was providing tremendous drive for OEG - his stats for the 2n quarter were an amazing 11 kicks/7 marks, vindicatin his selection in my Dreamteam! Merrington kicked hi second and OEG's third - all had resulted from free : OEG's bustling full-forward Clohesy took an exceller mark and goaled to bring OEG within eight points a half time . As in the 2nd Semi, OEG made their matchwinnin surge in the third term . Early goals by Merrington an Steven saw OEG in front for the first time . Willi CH Herbertsen marked and he found Kurhowski clea (finally) of Tommy Reade and his first put Willi back i front . Willi 's Cook handballed to Sheldon Bryan an despite stumbling, got up and his first put Willi seve points up . OEG replied after a brilliant smothe enabled Paris to goal and he added another a minut later after a good aerial contest by Tassie Clohes3 OEG's players and Club XVIII crew on the hill smelle blood and Lutterschmidt's centre clearance was take by Lukasz - his quick kick was marked brilliantly b Steven - another OEG goal . Heater was providing gre-~ drive from CHB. John Paris, on fire, won the hard ba and his long kick was marked by Clohesy . A dubiou 25m brought him close range and it was OEG by 1 points . Willi were down but not out - Kurkowski agai got away from Reade to mark and goal from 25m. Bi OEG got the important team lifter right on 3 quart( time as Bishop's long kick spilled to allow Merringto to snap a brilliant goal from the boundary - his fourti OEG by 18 points and looking the goods . Willi Coach Oopy Elliott did not panic at thre quarter time as faithful supporters roared for a CYM resurgence. In his favour the cross breeze appeared t be swinging to Willi's end. Also in his favour was fresl youthful legs in Bryan, McCutcheon and Grochowsk released from the bench at 3 QT. Willi showed gre,, intestinal fortitude's as they rallied early in the fin, term - a quick kick by OEGs Hexter was marked b Willi's Griffiths - his kick hit Bryan and he goaled deficit 12 points . McCutcheon broke loose and hi searching kick hit Kurkowski - now exposing Reade' lack of pace - nis third made it the difference . Howeve OEG answered the call - John Pana's height was tc much for Weary and his mark and kick found Wi Conlen. His mark and goal made it 12 points ; OEG Steven then roved the pack and ran into the open go; to make it look out of Willi's reach, his high jump ov( the fence was a highlight. But Willi were not a spet force - digging deep they relentlessly attacked as OE appeared to have stopped. Thege's behind saw a poe kick-in from OEG, marked by McCutcheon his goal gi

Traditional football boots with stops can be quite unstable . They can make turning difficult and increase the risk of knee and ankle injuries . So an Australian footballer and scientist pulled out all the stops to give you a boot with superior comfort, greater stability and surer grip when turning . The boot is Blades, with unique angled rubber ribs and a distinctive X-shaped heel support . Australian Design Award winners, Blades have won over the entire team at AFL side Footscray, the Victorian State Football League umpires, Socceroo captain Paul Wade and top Rugby League internationals . Also approved by the Australian Rugby Football Union, Blades offer a broader last .for Australian feet, an internal EVA wedge to lessen achilles strain and 3 sole types to suit any playing surface .

So try a pair of Blades . And take the greatest step forward in football boot technology for 2 5 years .

'ell at least someone reads this column, got some "angry" Monash Blues players (Header s and Koopy) wondering just why we tipped against them last week . An the power of motivation of course . ## # While on the issue of Grand Finals congratulations to St. Kevins (C), Monash Blues (D), Aquinas (E East), Old Essendon (E Central), Salesian (E South) , Old Xavs (U19/1), Old Brighton (U19 (2) Blue), St . Kevins (U19 (2) White) and Whitefriars (U19 (2) Red ) on winning their respective Premierships . Also special mention to Aquinas, Old Essendon and Salesianwho have won through to D Section for 1997, after winning their respective E Section Grand Finals . ## # Congratulations are also extended to Collegians (A) and Old Trinity (B) on winning their respective 2nd Semi-finals. An extra well done to Old Trinity on returning to A Section in 1997 . Well done to you both . ### Some interesting stats from the previous week' s Grand Finals. 1) Marcellin finished in all four places on the ladder this season, U19 (4th), Club XVIII (3rd), Seniors (2nd) and Reserves (lst) . Obviously not the ideal scenario but it surely indicates a healthy wealth of talent at the club . 2) That of the (10) Premierships won last weekend, (3) of the coaches Peter Turley (Salesian), Dave Rogers (Monash Blues) and Tim Hart

1.

(St . Kevins) had all played A Section football within the last (5) seasons and 3) that (2) of these Coaches were first year coaches Peter Turley and Dave Rogers . ## # Well the VAFA Vote Count Night was held last week and to be honest some of the performances were well worth mentioning . Marcus Dollman (C Section winner) had phoned his folks well before the announcement . Thank God that they were not there at the finish to see his "Up there Cazaly" impersonations on the reception tables though or his walk / fall down the lobby stairs . The comment was passed that the new addition to the staff Ms . Amy Stanyer was really working the crowd, one comment was passed, "if she doesn't find a boyfriend out of this lot she'll never get one" . Plenty of people were present but the "ring-ins" from Peninsula, St . Kevins and Salesian were uncalled for . Well done on winning the Grand Final but invite only guys means, invites only, and finally a disappointing fact of the night was the theft of the display jumpers in reception . Some people really do know how to spoil a good night, and to think that the two "returned" were done so rather unwillingly, hey "Olly and Haze" . All in all a good night was had by all except Tom Reynolds who is still trying to come to grips by being called "old" by a certain female in attendance . Well done to all of the winners, a display will next week be present in the Amateur Footballer .

COACHES CLIPBOARD edited by AFCAIVAFA

Interview with Simon Dalrymple (Old Trinity Senior Coach 1996) ~j7 , rth his team about to enter the B Section Grand t~ ~ Final (next week), we ask Simon for some of his thoughts on the past season, his future plans and his coaching philosophies. GR : Simon what personal details can you give us regarding yourself ? SD: I am single and operate my own sports marketing business . I am also completing my masters in Sports Science having obtained a Graduate Diploma in Sports Science and Coaching from Deakin University . I also operate as a marketing consultant with Box Hill Football Club in addition to coaching football and cricket at Trinity Grammar. GR: What is your football background ? SD: I spent (2) seasons at Hawthorn playing U 19's and Reserve football followed by two seasons as a player at Sandringham . I then enjoyed (5) seasons with Box Hill in the VFA before standing out of football in 1994 to qualify under amateur rules to play for Old Trinity in 1995 . This is my first season as coach at Old Trinity . GR. What is your basic football philosophy ? SD : To get the most out of each player and to get the most out of the team collectively . GR : Now that you have ensured promotion back to A Section, how have you focussed your players for the upcoming Grand Final ? SD : It has been very interesting. People around the club have confirmed that compared with 1994 when we were in the same position, it has been far more low key and I think that is a good thing as it indicates that the players are very focussed toward going all the way. I have personally not played in a Grand Final and therefore it will be a very special occasion for me. GR What coaches have influenced you ? SD : Allan Jeans has always impressed me greatly. I worked with Hawthorn for (3) years in a marketing role at the time when Allan Jeans was coach and had the opportunity to observe him at close quarters . As well as being a fantastic person, his ability to pick out strengths and weaknesses and his general understanding of the game is remarkable . It is also enlightening to see that his players trained as they played . David Parkin also influenced me from my time at Deakin and his sheer passion for the game is amazing . Obviously Dennis Pagan's preparation and planning is first class . GR : What is your football ambition ? SD: I would eventually like to work in the development side of coaching to make the most of my qualifications and would be particularly keen to become involved with the VSFL in this regard.

GR What has impressed you to remain with the VAFA at this stage of your career ? SD : The competition is very well run and the standard very good. Also the players all participate for the right reasons - for the love of the game . GR. Would you care to name some of the quality ama.eur players that you have seen ? SD : I have been impressed by so many but those who immediately come to mind are Christian Davidson (Collegians) a great all round player, Brett Connell (Ormond) for his workrate by being so hard at the ball and big "Chief' Petrevski (Theny) who has dominated a number of games I have seen. GR : What would you do to improve football ? SD: I would like to see the order-off rule reconsidered because of its severity and the reinstatement of VFL players also reconsidered as I think it is too hard for them to return to the VAFA. I would also like to ease my frustration at times when players are unable to meet all training commitments due to work pressures but I realise that that is part and parcel of amateur football . GR: What are the difficulties of being a playing coach? SD: I don't have a problem on match days as I am fortunate to have an excellent back up team on the bench . I find the most challenging aspect is to prepare myself mentally and physically without upsetting the team's preparation. GR: What do Old Trinity need to do to remain competitive in A Section ? SD : We need to recruit to increase our depth of playing personnel and we will need more back up off-field to support those who already work so hard around the club . Most importantly we must continue to develop our younger players and need to experience a fierce desire from all players to dedicate themselves to the higher level, in contrast with our attitude after our B Section flag in 1994 . GR: Who is your tip to win the prelim final in B Section ? SD : That's a tough question and I would tip a draw . GR : If you had the opportunity to have an extended lunch with three football people, who would you choose ? SD : David Parkin, Allan Jeans would be terrific to talk coaching with and Tim Lane is a commentator that I have a very high regard for. GR : How long will you remain in coaching for ? SD : For as long as I'm motivated to succeed in this area and dependant upon my employment . I am hoping to remain involved for a long time . I gain great satisfaction simply being around a football club . GR Simon, thank you for your time and all the best on Grand Final day . Interview conducted by Geoff Reilley, Senior Coach at Ormond and AFCA/VAFA Committee Member .

E SOUTH SECTION by Damien Batey

alesian's dream season reached its crescend o last week when they overcame Powerhouse to win the 1996 premiership . Despite being an outside chance to win any of their finals games this year, Salesian were clearly the best prepared side for the finals series . REVIEW GRAND FINAL

With Powerhouse earning their grand final birth a week earlier with a great win over Peninsula, they were outright favourites for the match . However, a determined Salesian side were not hindered by speculation that they could not win the final . The opening quarter was in the habitation of many grand finals and was a tough and scrappy affair . Powerhouse were the more settled of the two sides and managed to outscore their opponents by six points . Several opportunities went begging for Salesian in the first quarter and despite doubling Powerhouse scoring shots, converted only one goal . It appeared as if Salesian were about to take a stronghold on the game, but in the second quarter they managed only one goal one behind . It was at this point that Powerhouse fought back and with Phelan finding the big sticks were able to have a big five goal quarter . By half time the game was mapping out as predicted with Power House gaining an early ascendancy. What was to occur in the third quarter however, was not so easy to predict . Power House again started better and looked as if they were going to set up a big win . The second half of the third term marked a huge Salesian resurgence . Dashing defender Mick Hazell lead the Salesian defence to completely shut out the Power House forwards . Meanwhile old hand Cincotta started to fire and got a couple of goals on the board . McCulloch who had played so well for Power House in the first half, started to find his teammates battling in the third term. By three quarter time, Salesian had showed their way back to be within 11 points of their opponents . The scene was set for an epic last quarter, bu t instead of a dogfight we saw a fitter Salesian side run Power House off their legs in the last quarter .

The last quarter belonged entirely to Salesian as Powe r House watched o n and obliterated into complete capitulation . Nothing seemed to lift Power House as the premiership was stolen from right under their nose . By the final quarter the ground was soft and clay-like and required true endurance and commitment to be run on. In the simplest of terms, it was Salesian's far superior running that won them the game . Best for Salesian were Hazell, Cincotta, Wiseman and Healey . For Power House Hall, McCullough, Friend an d Clayton did their best. In the reserves, more disappointment for Power House as they were vanquished by Peninsula . The Pirates were the best reserves side this year and ran out convincing winners . CONGRATULATIONS to Elsternwick's Lethal Leigh Murphy who won the E south section best and fairest with 22 votes.

THANKYOU to all correspondents for my reports this season, I could not have done the job without your invaluable contributions . All the best for season 1997 .

19U SECTIONS by Brett Connel l

Knitwear So it's Xavs, SKOBS, `Tor~aers & the 'Friars the best for 199 6 REVIEW OF GRAND FINAL MATCHES DIVISION ONE - GRAND FINA L 0 nce again the conditions were less than ideal with a blustery north westerly blowing and the ground hard and dry (for a while anyway) . In an even first term it was the Xavs who kicked with the advantage of the wind and with an even number of scoring shots apiece lead after some straighter shooting at the first break . For the Xavs Heil and Hilbert were doing well while the Blues had done their homework and had held Hawkins an d Donati we ll. The second term was expectedly close with the trademark of both of these sides being attack at all times coming to the fore . Hard body clashes and great use of the football saw both sides oblivious to the gusty conditions . The crowd was in full voice and going in at 1/2 time there was only (3) points separating the two sides in Xavs favour . They call it the "Premiership 1/4" and both sides hit the ground knowing full well if the could crack the other side the premiership would be theirs . Neither side was to give in and the Xavs with Perry, Captain Woodruff an d lacovangelo in the thick of things were looking the goods, enter Messrs F ri cker, Fairbank, Faull and Brockely . They had been fantastic all day and were not about to give in without a fight, and with Ryan and Roydhouse solid contributors the game was still in the balance with (30) minutes to go . Who would bounce out better ? History tells us that it was the Pat Hawkins led Xavs, charged up and with a big crowd urging them on they banged on (6) goals to the Blues (1) to run out comfortable winners . The scores are in no way a reflection of the efforts of the Blues, gallant in defeat Steve Carroll's boys never gave in and continually attacked until the final siren . But it was to no avail as the strong Xavs defence and their sharpshooting forwards completed a fine finals series . Congratulations Xavs and commiserations to the Blues . DIVISION (2) WHITE GRAND FINAL Who would have ever dreamed that the VAFA U19 hybrid team of 1995 (Warringal) would being playing off for a premiership in only its second season, and against one of the strongest U19 units going around more recently in St . Kevins .lWell that's what happened and at Timber Ridge last Saturday the Redbacks almost pulled of a remarkable win . Both teams were evenly matched, with the Redbacks obvious underdogs on the day . The first term saw even scoring and the Redbacks had done well to be within a little over two kicks at 1/4 time after kicking into the breeze . Yin, Playfair and O'Connell were having an influence for the Redbacks with Pivetta, Greenham and Kuring prominent for the SKOBS. The second 1/4 saw the Redbacks seize the initiative and take the lead with some smart use of the ball, and at 1/2 time they led by (13) points while keeping the SKOBS

goalless . The 3rd term was a ripper with both sides attacking at will, the SKOBS booting (8) to the Redbacks (2) into the breeze . Well the scene was set and both sides came out firing, but it was the Redbacks who looked more composed even with (1) man short for the remainder of the match . Had the SKOBS run their race? They led at 3/4 time by (25) points but Benton, S . Anderson and Williams were not about to let Bid "H" down at this hurdle . They threw everything at the SKOBS who held on for dear life, in the finish the Redbacks (4) last 1/4 goals were not enough and the SKOBS held on to win by (3) points. Unfortunately there has to be a winner and a loser, congratulations are extended to both teams on fine seasons and well done to the SKOBS for winning the Premiership . To Harry Harisiou, John Power, Bob Burden, Keiran Harte and all of the Warringal players commiserations . DIVISION (2) BLUE GRAND FINA L If you were to tell me that Old Brighton would boot (6) first 1/4 goals and hold Mazenod to (1) in the first term, and then only score (2) more goals for the game, and then ask me to pick a winner I would have to lean towards the 'Nodders . Well in hindsight now that is exactly what happened except that the 'Nodders were unable to overhaul the Tonners tearaway start . A brilliant 1st 1/4 saw the `Tonners, through Dennis, Wilson and Alderson set up the win, but the 'Nodders were never to be denied . Down by (31) points at the first break they chipped away and at the main break had had more scoring shots than the 'Tonners but had been unable to capitalise on the strong on-ball work of Hemmerich, Bailey and Knott . The "Premiership 1/4" again was a joy to watch both sides defending stoutly, Paolucci fantastic for the 'Nodders, with Gadsden, Raju, Price and Rhodes dangerous whether on the ball or up forward . Had the 'Nodders done enough ? They had held the "fonners to (2) goals while adding one themselves, they were (4) goals down kicking with the aid of the breeze, but had they spent their tickets ? No way, they gave the Tonners nothing adding (2) goals themselves while holding Old Brighton goalless (again) . However (2) goals was not to be enough with Tonners of the calibre of Price, McGuigan and Parnham prominent when it counted, in the finish the 'Nodders gallant charge came to an end with them trailing by a mere (10) points . To Kevin King an d all of the Mazenod players and officials, you did yourselves proud . A fine work ethic, a committed showing and fine sportsmanship throughout made the game a joy to watch. Unfortunately you were not good enough on the day but you lost no supporters last week with a fantastic fighting final 3/4's of football . To Leigh Bowes, Sam Williams an d Messrs . Paterson, Brown and Lewis congratulations, a mighty team effort, thoroughly deserved on the day . The desperation shown at the finish was a pleasure to watch, well done.

~9 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

DIVISION ( 2) RED GRAND FINAL Whitefriars faced Old Carey for the fourth time this season, having never defeated them and at their last outing being belted by (91) points in the 2nd semi . The 'Friars realised that they would need a huge turnaround and crushed Old Scotch the week previous and knew that they must pressure the OC's and keep the match tight . Peter Schiller was also aware that this match was the be all and end all, undefeated all season meant precious little if they went down today, and he was confident that his charges were ready for the task at hand . The 'Friars began well but the OC's fought back while kicking into the breeze to trail by (3) points . Not unlike the Preliminary Final the 'Friars 2nd 1/4 was the turning point, holding the OC's scoreless and adding (2) themselves they held a healthy (15) point advantage . Bedford, Murphy, Collins and Oppy were relishing the conditions for the OC's, while the Friars had prime movers in Shepherd, Lacey, Davis an d Jongebloed firing. The third 1/4 was, as expected a terrific contest with the OC's fighting back hard with Detarczynski, Lucas and Costello the main instigators. The OC's adding (2) goals to the 'Friars (1) . The scene was set for a fantastic last 1/4 and that's what transpired . Both teams adding (2) goals apiece, and the OC's hitting the front, only to see the 'Friars push the ball forward score a behind and then a clinching major by Captain M. Jongebloed sealed the match . R . Pawlick, Mika and Nolan continued their fine form for the 'Friars in what was a fine win. To Peter Schiller and the OC's unit commiserations, unfortunately not the best side on the day, but a mighty fine season for you all which I know is small consolation, but it surely augers well for future Senior and U19 success . To Andy Dalrymple and all of the mighty 'Friars, well done . A mighty effort full of merit and team spirit, surely the exact tonic the Senior club needed after a long season for them .

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO - 1991

North Old Boys went out determined to show that their last quarter second semi fadeout was but a minor unset . And prove it they did . Coach Robert Hyde really had them firing and despite all the moves Old Scotch's Peter Sherwin tried, the NOBS could not be sidetracked . Nine goals ahead at half time 13 .7 to 4 .6, they were relentless in the second half to win 22 .20 (152) to 6 .13 (49) . Big man Darren Martin at Full forward for NOBS was unstoppable and finished with 9 goals . In a very even side, Moloney, Conti, Brazil, Egan and Considine were best . Brady, Fuller and Smith were best for Scotch . It had to be a disappointing day for one of the teams from the schools on the hill at Kew . And that was the fate of Old Trinity (14 out of 18 in home and home), and they lost both finals, going down 13 .11 (89) to Old Xaverians 15 .20 (110), after leading at the last change by 9 points. Old Xaverians best were Doug Bailey, Dick Curtain, Jamie Petroff.

Whitefriars played up to their good form when they were far too strong for Monash Blues 13 . 9 (87) to 10. 4 (64) . Coughlan, Midro, Lyndall, Carbone, Reidy, McAuliffe were stars for the "Friars" . St Bernards won the "4 'n' 20" Club Championship with 88 points for Runners-up Mazenod 85.5 .

A Section best and fairest and winner of the J .N. Woodrow Medal was Tom Keipert (Old Scotch) 20 votes, from Matt Armstrong (Old Haileybury) 19 and Brett Mahoney (De La Salle) 18. B Section G .T . Moore Medal went to Andrew Allibon (Old Trinity) 23 from Vin Comito (St Bernards) 18 and in third place was veteran Frank Gleeson (Old Paradians) 16 . 10 YEARS AGO - 1986 Collegians, 15 straight wins, were entitled to face the second semi with confidence but it was really a bad day for the Lions . Their very strong attack (they scored over 2000 points in home and home games) scored only 5 goals for the day (1, 1, 2, 1) to North Old Boys' 11 . Final scores were 11 .11 to 5 .9 . Best were S . Hibbert, Hedley, Conti, Wright, Considine, Weir (North), and Newman, Williams, Bickford, Irvine, 1 . Herman, Wright (Collegians) .

In the replay "B" first semi Fawkner were far too strong all day for Parkside 17 .9 to 8 . 10 . Stars were Hoare, Kerslake, Hills (Fawk .), and Sturgess, Marsh, Freeman (P'side) . In the second semi Old Paradians confirmed their right to top position with a 7 goal win over Old Xaverians, 22 .16 to 16.10 . Parade were best served by Fahey, Nelson and Way, while Wilton, Summers and L . O'Sullivan were strong players for Old Xavs . Thomastown, after finishing on top in "C" suffered the ultimate disappointment when they lost the preÂŽ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

liminary final to Banyule, 8 .9 to 12.17 . Old Haileybury with an average o f 8 .47 points won th e Victoria Police Trophy for most disciplined Under 19 team, with Collegians, 8 .23 second and Ormond, 8.19 third .

The "A" Section B & F was won by Phil Mehrten (Orm .) 15, from Greg McHenry (De La Salle) 14 and Mike Yandell (U. Blues) 13 . Best scorers for other clubs were Tony Keenan (Bulleen-Temp) 12, John Kanis (Caul . Gram) 9, Grant Newman (Coll .) 9, Ross Clements (Ivan .) 7, Matt Getson (Marc .) 6, Paul Considine (NOB) 11 and Richard Senior (Old Scotch) 10 . Michael O'Dea (St Bernards) won "B" Section with 15 votes from Simon Meehan (St Kilda CBOC) 14 and Mark Majerczak (Fawk .) 13 . Best for other clubs were Peter Wood (Old P.) 12, Nick Wilton (Old X .) 11, Paul Woff (Old B .) 7, Greg Bradshaw (Old Melb .) 7, Garry Williams (P'side) 9, Gerard Biddlestone (Therry) 10 and Nick Heath (U . Blacks) 9 . 15 YEARS AGO - 198 1 Old Xaverians won the right to a second chance against North Old Boys when they led throughout against De La Salle to win by 31 points . Old Xaverians surprised with the selection of Nick Burne at full forward . The experiment was successful as Nick kicked 9 goals . Other good players for Old Xaverians were Noonan, Corcoran and Callil, and for De La Salle, Cooke, Franetic and M . Greene . Collegians won their way back to "A" Section with a most convincing last quarter against Ivanhoe . Best were Guiney, Daff, Cook (Coll .) and Course, Stewart and Kilpatrick (Ivan .) . Other teams to win premierships were Alphington (C), Coburg (D), North Brunswick (E) and Banyule (F) . North Old Boys were to feature in both "A" Section grand finals, as their reserves won the preliminary final against Old Xaverians, 16 .7 to 11 .9. North Old Boys scored the first leg of a possible treble when they won Junior Section 1 Grand Final 17 .14 to 15 .14, after being level at half time and trailing by 5 goals at the last change . Best were Hedley, Wigmore, DuBois, Gazzola (NOB) and Dallas, Neal, Kennett, Zwar and McInerney (Melb . Uni) . 20 YEARS AGO - 197 6

North Old Boys won their first "A" Section flag romping home by 49 points from St Bernards in the grand final . St Bernards made poor use of the wind in the first quarter to lead by only 7 points but then did well to keep North's lead down to 14 points at half time . North sewed the game up with 4 goals against the wind in the third quarter and then kicked 9 in th e LOOKING BACK - Continued on Page 33 D 31

** Congratulations to the following clubs who won premierships last weekend - C - St Kevins, D Monash Blues, E East - Aquinas OC, E Central - Old Essendon, E South - Salesians OC . In particular, well done to the three E section premiers who are promoted to D section. And well done to Old Trinity as they move back into A section. ** And congratulations to Robert ' Zoom' Bell who umpired his 250th (and last) - yeah right, game in the D section grand final last weekend . Must have been something in the air out there as Richie Simon is planning to give it away as is boundary Frank Martinez and goalie Graeme Wright (yet again) . We're sure we haven't really seen the last of these guys. Other retirements we know of include the fatherson team of Bi lly and David Fowler, both retiring after 10 years and 200 games each . You' 11 be missed boys . ** Another quiet milestone slipped through in the finals as 'the Master of Panto' Michael Lentini goal umpired his 250th game in the A Section first semi . It appears that Lentils didn't want to make a fuss as he is concentrating on the 'job at hand' . Yes there's a few more important games to go and he wants to get his second A Section grand final appointment . If he gets it watch on the day . ** Just to report that after Sammy Kahn's jacket was knicked last week we were able to pass the hat around and were only $10 short . A big thank you to all the members who contributed . ** A popular appointment last Thursday week was that of Bushy in his first grand final as a goalie . Not

as emotional as 'Bobby Dunstan' night, but Simmo gave him a hug anyway . ** Lygon St . bounce-off semi's were held on Thursday night between Matty McCrohan and Chuck Hinton, Kevvy Segota an d Marty Jackson stay tuned for results . ** Thanks to the VAFA for their invitation to last Monday night's Vote Count at the Carlton Crest . Congratulations to the following senior winners in APeter O'Brien (Old Melburnians), B - Jason Reddick (Therry), C - Marcus Dollman (St Kevins), D - Mark Koppens (St Johns), E Central - Mark Sedgwiek (UHSOB), E East - Fraser MacVean (Yarra Valley) and E South - Leigh Murphy (Elsternwick) . Some pretty popular winners in that group and well done to all of them . Another highlight of the evening was the raffle draw which saw our own Peter Simpson cvinning 25 Hugh Lyon Football jumpers . A lot of heavy lobbying was done by certain clubs to get on Simmo's good side. What's the latest offer Simmo and can you inform us of the taxation implications? Seriously a great night was had by all, and a big pat on the back to Phil and his crew for the organisation of such a successful night . ** Dates to remember : The re-scheduled 'Presidents Open-Fridge Night' now after the "B" preliminary at Elsternwick Park on Saturday . The 'Pub Run' on Thursday 19th September following the Bounce-Off final . And on the big A section grand final doing the traditional post match barby . Also see Lentils for details on the Dinner Dance on September 27th . MACCA AND AD

Among the goal kickers on 4 August was schoolboy Keith Truscott who kicked 10 goals for MHSOB . 38 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

Edited by Phil Steven s ne of the requests of clubs is that both teams 0remain on the field for the presentation ceremonie s that follow the conclusion of a grand final . It was particularly disappointing to learn that a number of teams displayed rather ordinary sportsmanship last weekend by trudging forlornly from the field whilst presentations were in full swing. Everyone understands the pain of seeing a season's plans go up in smoke, but our great game surely is built on the great tradition of knowing how to win and how to lose . ### Many people have been talking about last week's Editorial which explained the format for E section for 1997 and the structure of D section and the sections below for the 1998 season and beyond . To those who missed the Editorial get hold of a copy of last week's issue of the "Amateur Footballer" for full details or phone Elsternwick Park for a copy of the plans to be mailed out. ###

Last Sunday at Elsternwick Park the VAFA inducted the first group of players to the newly formed 300 Games Club. Clubs who believed that they had past players who qualified for this club were asked to provide the Association with details of years played . Registration Secretary Cliff Bastow then went to work adding up the number of senior and Under 19 VAFA games played whilst historian Ian Munro carried out the task of adding representative matches played in the same period . Amateur identity Johnny Keenan produced the certificates which were presented last Sunday to Kevin White ; Garry Norton ; Tony Borrack ; Peter Hutchinson ; Bruce Bourne and Garry Rosewarne . Missing were Ron Bungey (deceased) and Allan Ramsay. In attendance was John Kanis who was not presented with a certificate as he is a current player . John will receive his certificate if (and when) he ever retires . A great luncheon - congratulations to a select group of footballers who have contributed so much to the rich history of the Association . ## #
