THAT ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER IS HERE!! ! This weekend we see four senior teams who quite rightfully can lay claim to be their section's team of the year. However Grand Finals are decided on the day and it would not really surprise to see either team emerge as premier on each day. To Old Paradians and Old Trinity on Saturday and Collegians and Old Xaverians on Sunday congratulations on a great season may the best team on each day enjoy victory and may the runner-up be satisfied it has given of its best . Twould like to take this final opportunity (unless we have a drawn match this weekend!!) to sincerely thank many people who have supported me this year and have contributed significantly to what I believe to have been another extremely successful season of Amateur football . ~ Our Major Sponsor Quit for continuing to believe that the VAFA is an excellent vehicle for conveying its health message "MAKE THE MOVE" .

~ All other VAFA sponsors . ~ The City of Bayside . for its support o f the Association and the premier ground of the southern suburbs. The administrative staff of the VAFA, particularly Sue Anderson and Brett Connell who have taken on greater seniority this year and have performed admirably. Also to Amy Stanyer who has joined us in a junior role this year . ~ Association President David Burnes, Chairman Andrew Langford-Jones and the Executive for their time, devotion and expertise. To my family of three wonderful girls who have supported me greatly (as usual) throughout the year and finally ~ To all the players, officials and supporters who together combine to make Amateur football the wonderful and unique football competition it is today . P . Stevens VAFA Chief Executive Officer

AND FROM THE VAFA PRESIDEN T s the VAFA heads to e conclusion of its

104th year we can look back, I believe, at another successful year . At a time when, for various reasons, football at what I would describe as "grass roots" level has been put under enormous pressure to compete, the VAFA has been able David Burnes to maintain its position without any reduction in our standards we set . s with all seasons there have been a number of highs and lows. I suppose the low point of 1996 was the lack of representative football for the season . This was caused by a concern on the part of the VAFA with the direction being taken by the SAAFL towards a semi-professional competition . While the VAFA has no objection to playing against a profes-

sional or semi-professional competition, for example the VCFL or the VFA, we object to playing against a competition that while calling itself "amateur" but is allowing payment to players . Rest assured a full program of representative football will be in place for 1997. high note of the season has been the success of A the Warringal Under-19 team . This team was formed when three separate clubs, each with a number of Under-19 players, but each insufficient to make up a team, combined all the players into a hybrid team and named themselves "Warringal" . Under the astute coaching of Harry Harisiou these boys who would have been lost to Amateur football but came together as a team and made it through to the Grand Final in their division. Unfortunately they didn't win the Grand Final, but it was a fantastic effort to even reach such a position given the base they were coming from . s with all my years as Chairman or President, the job has been made easier by the help given to me Continued on Page 5 9

TO WIN OR LOSE IT ALL COLLEGIANS OR OLD XAVERIANS he end of the rainbow . That elusive pot of gold is being hunted down as the best two sides in the competition, Collegians and Old Xaverians fight it out for ownership of the L. A. Adamson Cup . At 5 pm Sunday afternoon, only one of those two warriors James Bennett or Matt Hanneberry will hold aloft the Cup on behalf of the team . During the season, these two old established clubs have battled through the good and bad times : shared in the excitement and disappointment for their players and supporters and now for the moment of truth . The culmination of a ll that preparation and planning wi ll be at 2 .20 pm this Sunday when the 21 players and their coach wi ll put their faith in each other for the ownership of a scruffy piece of fabric . Another rough and tough Melbourne winter has come and gone and thank goodness for Amateur football . A Section, the flagship of the VAFA competition, . has again generated enormous interest amongst the ten competing clubs, but for the two participants today, the stakes are high - it's all or nothing. Coll egians, the oldest club in the competition established in 1892, have won nine A Section fl ags and have been one of the powerhouses of the nineties winning flags 92/93 and were runner up three times . Struggled last year to avoid relegation and a relocation to the Village Green has given them a new lease of life . Top side throughout the year under six term coach Leigh Carlson and the Lions have gathered together a committed group of players, so maybe the dawn of a new era starts this Sunday . Old Xaverians, established in 1923, are moving into their best decade in the Amateurs with the chance of back-to-back premierships to add to their only flag in 1981 under coach, Mike Green . Preliminary finalists in 1993/4 and then, as the outstanding side all year in 1995 under Barry Richardson, took out the flag . A difficult early period in '96, but the club gained strength in adversity under new coach Nick Bourke, and now sets its sights on a third flag in its 73 years in the competition . Recent U19's flag winners and with the Reserves battling for honours today, perhaps the club is on the brink of its greatest period . PRELIMINARY FINAL REVIEW Old Xavs, much more determined and with a tight backline in control, accounted for a disappointing Old Melburnians by 26 points in almost gale force conditions last Sunday . With a cloud over key fonvards, Xavs versatility in attack enabled them to work the ball through the wind to boot four goals - two in each quarter - to the Glenhuntly Road end, which was the difference in the finish . Youngster, Daniel 2

Donati kicked five telling goals in a fine performance relieving the pressure on th e injured Dan Richardson and Dominic Berry . OM's had five straight at quarter time thanks to some excellent work by Simon Theodore and finishing off by last gamer Ian McMullin . But Xavs threaded the ball methodically into the stiff breeze for Simon Wood and Donati to score and narrow the gap . Terrific second quarter by Xavs' backs headed up by Andrew Brushfield, a courageous Michael Brennan, James Hawkins and the reliable Michael Holmes. Matt McClelland shut down an increasingly exasperated Woodrow Medal winner Peter O'Brien and OM's prime movers Andrew Thompson and Campbell Kennedy had no dominant influence on the match. Four second quarter Xavs' goals to only a point by OM's was just reward for a disciplined, rock-solid effort . David Strooper and Simon Bromell were not effective up forward as Xavs moved to an eight point lead at half time . Another two goals to Donati in the third quarter into the breeze and the restriction of OM's to only three goals set up a last stanza win for the Red and Black army. Took a while for that sealer, but with Berry bursting packs and the classy James McDonald finishing off neatly, Xavs stormed into their fourth consecutive finals appearance . Coach Nick Bourke was more than happy with his charges and pleased with the way they had stuck at the task all day . Best players were McCle ll and, Hawkins, Brennan and Brushfield while for OM's, best were Hewitt, Handbury, Stuckey and Thompson . GRAND FINAL PREVIEW

A new look Xavs ; polished up, full of fight and with another match-hardened finals match under their belt . They should give a better account of themselves this time, only going down by 10 points two weeks ago . But what's going to be different this time? Still injury doubts over Richardson and Berry and Xavs will need to cover for their possible absence or restricted movement . Maybe Donati will stand up again and lead the a goal kicking splurge? Collegians' backs headed up by Bennett, Kenneally, Milat, Parkin and co did a terrific job in the second semi, but will need to repeat it again . Across the middle, Darren Baxter was an influential player last time and Ben Coughlan will have his work cut out, but wingmen Bowen and McDonald will be dangerous again . However, Coll egians wi ll be dominant onball , but tough Darren Peters may have to wear Matt McClelland . Include Galbraith, Thomas, Dene-Johns and Wallace and any loose balls will fal l 0 THE AMATF1 IR FnnTRaI I Ca 1009

Collegians way . Mike Blood will have to repeat his best on ground performance form last year to pave to way for Simon Wood or Andrew Dillon to have any influence . Anthony Keyhoe's presence around the ball will stiffen up the close contests, but the Lions have too many capable ball getters who can drive the ball forward often enough. The Lions forward structure leans heavily on Brock Mooney and his battle with Andrew Brushfield will be decisive. Xavs backline improved markedly last week, but they cannot run off the line, otherwise Collegians will tear them apart through the middle . Overall , Collegians should win for the fo ll owing reasons: 1 . Depth of effective onballers . 2. More seasoned, experienced players who can carry the pressure of a grand final . 3. Tougher, more determined and committed group of players . 4 . Xavs' injury worries will be difficult to disguise in the grand final . 5. More options and versatility to exploit Xavs' weaknesses. So it's good luck to both clubs, players , officials and umpires who will make this another memorable grand final . SEASON REVIEW Season 1996 was highlighted by some about-faced performances by the leading clubs in a year of extraordinary bad playing conditions . Last year's premier, Old Xaverians sta rt ed off poorly after losing key players from its '95 year and was staring at B Section at the half way mark with a 2-7 strike rate . A coaching shakeout ; the gaining of Dominic Berry saw them bounce back to finish second winning their last nine games straight. But its opponent today, Coll egians was the only stable and consistent performer all year and won 14, lost two on an ineligibility permit, but found themselves still in a strong enough position to be worthy minor premiers. Apart from the top two, let's look at the other eight teams and their season more closely . OLD MELBURNIAN S Looked anything at the start and shades of that vintage year in '94 under coach Roger Ellingworth and captain Jeremy Nichols . With former Bloods player Sean Ralphsmith in his coaching debut and the recruitment of high profile player David Strooper, OM's looked set to be a strength . Six games on the trot confirmed that, but as sometimes is the OM's way, a fall from grace, injuries and then the loss of the next six . Only a late season revival gave them a finals berth . Beat Blues in the first semi, but third was about their limit after such an inconsistent season . UNIVERSITY BLUE S

Much was expected of them after being runners up last year and with not too many changes to the playing personnel. Perhaps it was the conditions, but apart from a string of four wins from rounds six to nine, they could only finish with ten wins and scraped into the four on the last game . Still some exciting young play-

ers around and the grounding of Beltrame/Slimmor and Fairbank augurs well for next year . OLD SCOTC H Started brilliantly winning the first three matches but promptly lost the next five and then fought rear guard action to battle for that precious fourth spot only to be pipped on the post . Won a game less than last year with a crop of young committed players under the direction of Wayne Hanmes after having to replace quality players in Fuller, Price, Reddish and Eagle . One or two key quality players and a regular four place is not beyond them . DE LA SALLE

Won officially 10, but legitimately nine, one less than last year when they installed a new coach, Mike McArthur-Allen . Lost a couple of close ones to Xavs and Scotch which were vital in the wash up, so disappointment mixed with the satisfaction of opening the new pavilion during the year . Relying heavily on the inte rnal recruiting market with some success and this crop wi ll be the hope of the future De La . OLD HAILEYBUR Y Made giant leaps forward up from B Section and still lying second at the end of round 15, but the loss of the last three convincingly to plummet to seventh place was a disappointment for coach Neville Taylor and his players. High quality players a ll round and the best might yet to come . ST BERNARD S The enigma of the competition . Just when they were written off, up they bobbed with a surprise result and back in with a chance . In the finish they won only seven to be tailed off . The Gollants were unable to carry any more injuries, but the club still blooded a crop of youngsters . But still difficult times ahead ; then again that was the comment last year . ORMOND Lost some key players at the end of '95 and although the club fought valiantly to stay up in the finish it could manage only five wins and a step down to B Section in 1997 . So after 26 consecutive years at the top and eight flags behind them, the Monds take the district mantle down with them and renew efforts to climb to the top again. MAZENOD This highly successful amateur club worked so hard over so many long years to gain the right to compete at the elite level, but a huge disappointment to slip back after only one year . The time for review and evaluation is on, but there is plenty of depth and scope in the locality for this club to make its presence felt again . SIGNING OFF . Thanks to all the people who have helped with this column, particular to the club officials and coaches and also to Sue Anderson, Amy Stanyer, Brett Connell and Editor Phil Stevens . Good luck to all over the coming footy-free months, but be rest assured it's all going to happen again in 1997 ; just as enjoyable under the same 'love of the game' banner and with the same friendships and competitive spirit .

B SECTION by Paul Luby

er a disappointing couple of years in which ey have missed the finals Parade took the step into A Section last week with a 26 point win over old Brighton at Elstemcvick Park . As expected with so much at stake it was a tense and hard fought encounter with no more than a goal separating the two sides at the first three breaks . Only in the last quarter were Parade able to break away and secure their first finals victory since 1987 . REVIEW OF PRELIMINARY FINAL For a change it was not blowing a gale and ground conditions apart from the centre square were excellent . Andrew Pryor ran out with Old Brighton at the start of the game but that was to be his only part of the action as he unable to take his place due to a hamstring injury sustained in the first semi final . As expected Tom Hayden was proving to be a strong focal point for Brighton and he kicked both of their goals in the opening term whilst Boyd, Kerr and Harrison replied for Parade . The Parade forwards were able to do well one on one with their opponents but the ball was not coming down quickly enough due to the good work of Reid and McLachlan on the ball . Neither side was able to gain the ascendancy and Parade went to the break with a slender 4 point lead . Early goals to Harrison and Harford opened up a 16 point lead for Parade as Zappa on the wing and Dall as and Geary in defence started to play with renewed confidence. Farrell was playing closer to Hayden but this didn't stop the spearhead from adding his third for the game but "Harro" struck back with his third as well to restore the 16 point lead . 'Ihe game continued to be tough in the packs with Fitzgerald an d Alderson doing well in defence for Brighton . Late in the quarter Hayden took a screamer in the goal square and goaled and when McLachlan added another Brighton went to the half time break only 2 points in arrears. This time Brighton were quick out of the blocks with 2 early goals to open up a 10 point lead their largest lead of the game. Parade replied immediately through Ciavola but when Murch and Lennox both added their second goals for the quarter Brighton were out to a 16 point lead and things were looking grim for Parade . This was a vital part of the game as Brighton pushed forcvard repeatedly as they threatened to further extend their lead and Parade looked to just hang in there and hoped to weather the storm. Parade were able to do this with desperate defence play and this lead to opportunities for the forwards down field as Kerr and Harrison took marks on the lead and goaled. Farrell was not on top of Hayden and a tight final term loomed as Brighton

went to the break with a 4 point lead . With a grand final spot and promotion to A Section on the line with crowd were expecting another close quarter of footy but it was not to be as Parade started to win the ball out of the centre via Swindon and Canavan. Parade coach Dale McCann switched Geary and Mulligan and it proved to be vital as Geary presented himself in the front position at CHF and become the main avenue to attack . This was also the quarter that Harrison proved himself a match winner as twice he lead out, took the strong mark and goaled . When Boyd added goal of the day from the pocket it was Parade by 16 points and in control Fitzgerald and Fisher continued to work hard in defence but Brighton couldn't sustain the pressure as Ciavola and Harrison added further goals to put the result beyond doubt . Best players for Parade included John Dallas at half back who continues to impress with his ability to make the right decisions under pressure and to always be in front, Paul Zappa who controlled his wing and provided plenty of running power, Simon Swindon was typically tough on his wing and on the ball late in the game, and Mark Harrison kicked 7 goals to take his tally to 96 for the year. Brighton would naturally be disappointed with the result but they made advances on last year when they finished fourth and will again be pushing for promotion in 1997 . For Brighton Fitzgerald at half back was a great player and provided plenty of dash for his side, Fisher was busy both in attack and defence whilst Alderson did an excellent tagging job on Mulligan . Reid was terrific on the all for three quarters and Birch had a good second half on his wing. PREVIEW OF GRAND FINAi.

We started with 10 teams and now finally after a lot of playing and training we are down to two sides to fight it out for the premiership cup . There is no doubt we have the best two sides for the year in the grand final in Trinity an d Parade as both sides have only lost three games each for the year and have generally handled the other teams with ease . Trinity are red hct favourites on account on their three wins over Parade this year which include a 22 point win in round 18 and another win by the game margin in the second semi-final two weeks ago . On both occasions Parade had the opportunity to win these games but were unable to put a whole four quarters together and Trinity are not the side where you can put in a bad quarter and expect to win . It was a physica l IM THF AAAATFI IR F(X)TRAI i FR 199R

encounter both in round 18 and two weeks ago and expect the same today with a premiership up for grabs . Trinity will lose Stephen Hatfield due to suspension and leading goalkicker Jamie Stickland is under a injury cloud but they will be bolstered by the return of Terry Board from suspension whilst Parade should be able to call upon big man Hayden Bellis from injury . Both sides have plenty of match winners who can turn a game when they are in form and both coaches will have done plenty of planning during the week to get the match ups right . The key players to watch for Trinity are ruckman Andrew Ramsden who is agile around the ground and then a dangerous forward when resting . Trevor Norman has had a great year at half back and is the springboard for so many of their attacks and he is well supported by Matt Seuling in defence. Sutcliffe on a wing was best on ground in the second semifinal and will need to be closely marked as will onballers Dalrymple, Anderson an d Vanderhoek. Up forward Rod Heath and Colin Phillips have been consistent contributors all year and are difficult to cover for the whole game . For Parade Mark Harrison at full forward has had a terrific year and with 96 goals to date will be hoping for another bag today. Simon Vincent, Dion Ciavola and Stephen Philp form the nucleus of the on ball brigade and they will need to start the ball rolling today from the first bounce if Parade are to compete in the centre square . Aiden Boyd at CHF and defenders Zorba and JD have all been good in the finals to date but there is no doubt that Parade need a lift from half forward Tim Mulligan if they are to win today . My head says Trinity who have won all the encounters this year and have had the week's break but its hard to go against your own side so I tip Parade to win a thriller by 3 points. Guest tipsters Tony De Bolfo (football expert) tips Parade by 5 points whilst Therry captain Dennis 'Commodore' Castaldi tips Trinity by 22 points . Let's hope for sunny weather, a big crowd and a great game .

Anybody who was at the Vote Count Evening held last week at the Carlton Crest Hotelwould have been able to witness first hand the exceptional standards they set in all the work they do. To Phil, Sue, Brett and Amy . I offer my sincere thanks for your help during the year and trust that the co-operation between the Executive and the staff at Elsternwick Park will continue to be a feature of the VAFA.

urrling to the games this weekend I congratulate Tall the sides that have won premierships already and wish the sides competing this weekend the best of luck .

s for making a prediction this as we all know is a path to disaster . However if forced to make a choice I an going for Old Trinity on Saturday and Old Xavs . on Sunday . The latter choice obviously contains a certain amount of loyalty of seasons past. The Collegians Football Club should go into this game as the firm favourites having performed by far the most consistently through the season . Old Xavs . have come home with the proverbial "wet sail", but I wonder if they can maintain the momentum through to the ultimate prize. Only time will tell . congratulate all followers of Amateur football for another successful year and look forward to season 1997 being bigger and better than ever . David Burnes VAFA President

U19 Alex Johnson Championship by Brett Connel l

Knitw ear At the completion of the 1996 U19 Finals Series the U19 Committee ran the Alex Johnso n Championship for the (4) Premiers of each section . These matches were not necessarily to decide the best U19 team in the VAFA but rather to play off for another title, the Alex Johnson Perpetual Shield . The matches were set down as 2 x 25 min . halves with time-on, and normal VAFA rules existed . The following is a small summation of last weekend . Review of Elimination matches . Elimination Match A: (Old Brighton versus St . Kevins ) The best from Blue and White U19 sections clashed last weekend at Elsternwick Park in fine but blustery conditions . It was always going to be tough for the Old Brighton team with not quite the full contingent, however they battled hard against a near full strength St. Kevins line-up . A first quarter of (13) goals to zip put paid the 'Tonners slim chances, with the second 1/2 a lot more even with the 'Tonners kicking to the wind assisted end . The SKOBS eventually winning well and advancing through to this weekend's Championship Final . Elimination Match B : (Old Xaverians versus Whitefriars) Not unlike the match on Saturday Whitefriars s were down gon numbers and a oals into the breeze) rto the upto Old (1 Xav booted (4) hold the advantage going into the 1/2 time break . They slammed on another (14) goals to (1) to run out convincing winners, and the chance to play off against old school rivals in St . Kevins today. Thanks are extended to all (4) participating teams from last weekend, especially Old Brighton and Whitefriars, although their numbers were down they played the matches out and gave both St . Kevins and

Old Xavs the chance for another hitout . so the s p which both matche s were played is a credit to all concerned . Many thanks are also extended to Andrew Chapman, Ben Schmidt, Paul Withington, Andrew Stephens, Craig Bratjberg, Michael Rossarto, Ben Tamblyn and Paul Leyden for umpiring the matches. Your efforts were appreciated by both players and officials alike . Preview of Today's Championship Final . Old Xaverlans versus St . Kevins Not that this is a preview but looking quickly at both sides and the importance both will place on winning, if both of their last week's performances are any indication we should be in for a terrific match . With rivalry stemming back from schooldays there is bound to be plenty of feeling in the match, which will only add to the spectacle . Players to watch from both teams would be for the Old Xavs Woodruff, Perry, Jones, Fleming and Nisbet, however Hede, Tucker, Iacovangelo and Heil should also not be discounted, while for the SKOBS Q uirk, Pivetta, Greenham, Livy and McArdle are fine players, not forgetting the likes of De Krester, O'Brien, Kuring and Large if they all play . All in all a great game is expected today and if I had to pick a winner I'm sitting on the fence this time, it will be a draw . Only joking because if it's a draw extra time is played (5 minutes each end) . In all seriousness the Xavs only slightly, but it would not surprise me if the SKOBS got up and rolled them . All the very best to both teams today .

1 . Sydney Swans may win tonight to go into their first AFL grand final since 1945 . The last time South Melbourne, as a Melbourne based club, made the finals was 1977. Who coached them ?

2 . At his Testimonial Dinner, the player told this story . "Barass was my first senior coach and had a big influence on my career . He helped me believe I could play league football . There were a few different things that he did . . . . First he sent me to the City Gym to do some weights and build up my strength . Then he sent me to a judo instructor . . . . I think that was to learn to roll . I don't think it was to learn judo. But the one that really helped was when he sent me to a psychologist . . . He'd got it in his mind that I was a quiet person ! Who was the player? 3. Mention the 1964 VFL Grand Final and two names come to mind, Gabelich for his famous dash and goal, and back pocket, Neil Crompton's goal that won the flag for Melbourne. Both played VAFA football . Can you name the clubs? Ray Gabelich later said he only had one worry as he raced towards goal . What was it? 4. Keith Dunstan wrote an article headed "The Perfidy of Ron Barassi" . What was he writing about? 5. North Melbourne won their first VFL flag in 1975. Three players Barry Davis, Doug Wade, John Ranta ll who had become famous when playing with Essendon, Geelong and South Melbourne were all in the North Melbourne team . Besides the lure of lots of money, why were they able to leave their clubs at the end of 1974 and join North Melbourne? 6. The 1964 VFL Grand Final between Collingwood an d Melbourne again . Besides Gabelich and Crompton 11 other players had come from the VAFA to VFL football . This would probably be a record - 13 players from one competition to play in an AFL Grand Final. The players were Tony Anderson, Brian Roet, Brian Dixon, Don Williams, Peter McLean (Melb .), Trevor Steer, Laurie Hill, Duncan Wright, Kevin McLean, Ian Graham, Denis Dalton (Coll .).

Name the VAFA clubs they played with. Can you put names to the fo llowing ? a) One became a member of Victorian Legislative Assembly. b) One played in an AFL premiership with another club . c) One won a VAFA "A" Section Best and Fairest . d) 'fwo won the Copeland Trophy (Collingwood B&F) in 1963 and 1964 . 7. Looking Back 1986 lists the Collegians team . How many either had played VFL footba ll or went on to play VFL football ? 8 . Again to Looking Back in 1986, how many of the Collegians 1986 team played in the second semi-final in 1996? Can you name them ? 9 . Again go to Looking Back and look at Old Paradians . Brian Grills, Peter Wood, Paul Considine, Michael Skerrett, Frank Gleeson, Dominic Spi llane all played Interstate Amateur Football . ~~ÂŽ TIJC A~A/.TCI IO Cfll1TCM11 I C~

.nnc

a) One of them won an A Section Best and Fairest . b) One captained Victoria to victory in 1986 AAFC Carnival and two players in that 1986 team and not mentioned above: c) One was a Melbourne "Ireland experiment" . d) One has had a big influence on the 1996 Old Paradians grand final team . 10. Looking Back 1981 states "Old Xaverians shut out North's semi-final star, Shane Maguire" . Who is Shane Maguire trying to shut out in 1996 ? ANSWERS 1 . Triple Brownlow Medallist, Ian Stewart.

2. Carlton's Bruce Doull , half back flanker in the Team of The Century . 3. Ray Gabelich (Parkside), Neil Crompton (Ormond). "That I was running the wrong way! " 4 . He was describing Ron Barassi's departure from Melbourne to become captain coach of Carlton . Perfidy means breach of faith, treachery. 5. The VFL brought in a rule that players who had been 10 years with the one club were free to play with another club . One story is that North interviewed John Ranta ll in his solicitor's office and took along a suitcase of money with them . Now John Rantall was slow talking. North put the first pile of money on the floor, expecting John to say Yes . When no answer came, North added a second lot to the pile . John was so awestruck that North added a third stack to the pile . John finally found his voice and croaked "YES" . That we ll-known North official, still active in AFL footba ll , denies the story. 6. Tony Anderson, Brian Roet (U . Blacks), Brian Dixon (MHSOB), Don Williams (E'wick), Peter McLean (Old Melb .) . Trevor Steer (U . Blacks), Laurie Hill (P'side), Duncan Wright (Alph .), Kevin McLean (Ivan .), Ian Graham (U . Blacks), Denis Dalton (Old Parad .) . a) Brian Dixon. b) Peter McLean played in Carlton's 1968 premiership team . c) Denis Dalton in 1963. d) Ian Graham, centre half forward or full forward. It was only his second year with the club . Trevor Steer, ruckman, won it the previous year . 7. Gary Irvine (Foots), Steve Bickford (Melb .), Ian Herman (Carlt, Richmond) . 8 . Steve Laussen Jeff Lemon, Chris Po llock . 9. a) Frank Gleeson, 1987 b) Dominic Spillane, who played his 100th game in 1986 Grand Final c) James Fahy came out from Ireland with Jim Stynes, has been on a visit t o Australia recently and was at Sandringham to see the 1996 "B" Section second semi . d) Dale McCann, CHB in 1986, is 1996 Coach . 10 . In 1996 Shane Maguire is deputy chairman of the AFL Tribunal. Well, they always say, "it takes a sinner to know another sinner" .

Traditional football boots with stops can be quite unstable . They can make turning difficult and increase the risk of knee and ankle injuries . So an Australian footballer and scientist pulled out all the stops to give you a boot with superior comfort, greater stability and surer grip when turning . The boot is Blades, with unique angled rubber ribs and a distinctive X-shaped heel support . Australian Design Award winners, Blades have won over the entire team at AFL side Footscray, the Victorian State Football League umpires, Socceroo captain Paul Wade and top Rugby League internationals . Also approved by the Australian Rugby Football Union, Blades offer a broader last for Australian feet, an internal EVA wedge to lessen achilles strain and 3 sole types to suit any playing surface .

So try a pair of Blades . And take the greatest step forward in football boot technology for 25 years .

1996 ADVISORS UMPIRE ADVISOR: BRIAN BULLUSS . The highlight of Brian's year has been his ability to identify young talent among the umpiring group and blood them into senior football . "Bomber" has completed his fifth season as advisor and the Association thanks him sincerely for his efforts. ASSISTANT ADVISOR : RON LIPPOLD . Ron's support of Brian Bulluss and his supervision of the skills development has contributed greatly to the development of our umpires. ASSISTANT ADVISOR : RUSSELL FRANCIS. Russell's role this year has been to oversee and co-ordinate the group of umpire observer's and assist Brian and Ron in umpire selection . FITNESS ADVISOR : PAUL YOUNG. Paul's contribution to the umpires this year has been quite a magnificent one in terms of his on-field co-ordination and supervision of training activities . GOAL UMPIRE ADVISOR : GARRY BAUMGARTEN . During 1996 Gary has again provided goal umpires who have represented the Association most efficiently and professionally .

THIS WEEKEND'S UMPIRES FROM PETER GERSCH

Peter is a red hot favourite for one of the prized September 22nd appointments . Started with the VAFA in 1992 after 11 years with the VFL/AFL. Carn ival umpire 1994 and has umpired a total of 5 rep . games . Umpired 3 "A" sec finals previously . A quiet year in patches but back to his brilliant best over recent matches .

JUSTIN TOOHEY

Justin has had a difficult couple of seasons battling injuries but such is his character that he is back umpiring at his best now . Commenced with the VAFA in 1986 after a 2 year AFL career. One "A" Sec GF previously . Has umpired at state level . Today's appointment caps off another good year for Justin .

MARK GIBSON

Mark loves Elsternwick Park and would love to do every game at HQ . Commenced with VAFA in 1989 after 7 years with the VFA . Highlights so far in career being first "A" final and D Sec Grand Final . Mark has enjoyed a magnificent season and many people would not have been surprised to see the very popular "Gibbo" land a 22 September appointment . A B section senior appointment however rounds off a grea t season for Mark .

MARTY JACKSON

Marty commenced with the VAFA in 1992 after 7 years with the NSWFL . Highlights o Marty's 115 game career has been 2 previous "B" Sec grand finals . Arguably a fir m favourite to walk out first with "Gerschy" on the "Big" day . This early prediction has become a reality with Marty's A section appointment this Sunday .

WAYNE HINTON Umpiring the C Sec Grand Final probably suggests "Chuck" won't get an A or B appointment unless an unexpected opportunity presents itself . Wayne has been and still most certainly is one of our best umpires and will be determined to go higher in 1997 .

ANTHONY DAMEN (F) Anthony has reached the same level of appointment this year as last year and like Wayne will be determined to go that extra step in 1997 . A real "personality" umpire Anthony's keenness is admired by all .

THANKS FOR THE M E MO RIES TO 2 UMPIRING GREAT S Rob Bell an d Richard Simon have both announced that they will not be continuing on in 1997 . INTERVIEW WITH LEIGH CARLSON (Collegians Senior Coach 1996 )

(Interview conducted September 1, 1996) Mike McArthur Allen : Leigh, you came to Collegians in 1991 . Where had you coached prior to that? Leigh Carlson : I coached Fitzroy Football Club under19s for 4 years prior to that. AMA: You took over at a time when they had been pretty successful in playing in Grand Finals. You missed the finals in your first year and then played in the next three after that . How did you find the adjustment to Amateur football ? LC : It took me a little while I think for me to adjust but I also I think it took the players of Collegians a little while to adjust to my expectations and the style of play and so forth, that I wanted to put into practice at Collegians . I'm a bit of a standing joke around the place that I took them from second with Bruce Ferguson to fifth and did it very well . MMA : You followed on from Bruce Ferguson who had been coach for a long time - eight or nine years, so it is hard to change something that has been part the club for nearly a decade I guess. What about your expectations of Amateur footy when you first came to it ?

LC : Yeah look I think the club went through a terrific process of interviews for my appointment and part of that was an acknowledgment that they did not want someone coming into the club to really flog their players and expect four nights of training and so forth . I think there was some adjustments in my thinking of what I could expect and I think the players have generally have accepted what I require from them and they go about it pretty well . MMA: Having come from a league background yourself as a player, and then as a coach of a thirds side having to scale down your expectations of the players meant that you had to make some adjustments as well as the players and Collegians had to make some adjustments . Did you find any areas of Amateur footy that you were really disappointed in or surprised you in terms of player commitment or interest or skill? LC: No I guess not . I suppose in terms of priorities I have to come to the realisation that whilst footy had been a priority in my life for a long time I was at a stage where I was at an A Grade amateur club where it wasn't necessarily the case that football would be a priority and I think I've come to respect that and I hold the same sort of priorities . I think family and work commitments come

first and football after that . I think the players have been pretty honest in their application and sticking to those sort of principles . Mh1A: Coming to a club as old as Collegians - the oldest one in the amateurs, the one remaining founding club, did you feel any expectation on you, with the League background and then changing over after a long time with the same coach, and wanting to be successful immediately fall committee and Presidents want that instantly) - did you feet that expectation or were they patient with you during that first year ? LC : Look, I think they had made a very significant decision to change coaches after two very successful years, the final two years with Bruce Ferguson as coach so I think it was significant change for the club to make . My understanding is that I was the first outsider to be appointed at Collegians - someone who had not come through from Wesley or someone who had not been around the club a great deal . There was certainly a feeling of expectation but I also felt very much there was a feeling of support and backup for me and whatever I required from the club they've been very forthcoming and supportive.

MMA: Collegians always struck me as a well administered club off the field with the right people in the right jobs doing the right amount of work to make sure everything runs smoothly . Is that a perception that is founded in fact ? LC : I think so . There is probably no better club administration around . Obviously everyone would like to think their club administration is the best but that's what I believe. The club is a very strong club probably because of the administration and the way they go about getting a group of people who are prepared to work in the way we want them to . Certainly the administration in my time over the past six years was a very, very strong factor in the success in that time. hiMA: You had two winning grand finals sides . They were two very good sides. You've been in the grand final three times. Last year was a step back for you and half way through the year a lot of people thought that perhaps Collegians might be in trouble and heading to B Section . They then rallied very strongly in last part of the year and came home extremely well. So the change this year to be on top of the ladder for most of the year, have you exceeded expectations ? LC : Each year you sit down with a group of players and set them goals and we did that last year and I think at an appropriate and early time in that year we had to readjust our goal setting and instead of aiming to make the four we then were aiming to stay in A Grade . To win

what we believed was enough games to stay in A Grade and set some short term goals to help achieve that . I think we were smart enough to do that and whilst we always felt we were a good side and possibly not playing well we won seven out of our last ten games last year to enable us to gain eighth for the season which was more than enough to keep us in A Section . MMA : This year, 1996 seems one of those years where there is really not a standout side and that any of the top four is capable of winning it. Is that a fair summation ?

LC: I think so . I believe the four sides that are going to compete in the finals have some claim of being confident in being in the premiership stake s MMA : Have you picked up players from last year to this year that have really have galvanised the side into a better performing side than for the first half of last year ? LC: In some regards we have in another way I suppose we have been able to keep our side together . At the end of 1994 we were decimated through players retiring and not continuing to play footy at all . At the end of last year we didn't lose anyone (and that's been a strong trait at our club), to another amateur club or another competition. Our players genuinely like playing with us . We lost quite a few (I think ten) out of our previous grand final side and that was hard to cover but we also had significant injuries to Bennett, Galbraith and Parkin, three good players for us. So 1995 was a difficult year not only losing players from our previous year's list but also the current list . This year we been served well with three very good recruits and a number of players who have stepped up a notch to really take on the opportunities they've been given . MIA : Brock Mooney is one that comes to mind as a player that showed a bit of promise last year, who this year seems to be more consistent ?

LC : His first six games were well below what he was capable of last year . We knew he was going to be a good player and we continued to play him . He played all but the last four games in the firsts and was very good contributor after his first six games and we decided to play him in the under-19s in the last four games to qualify him for the finals . It was no surprise to me that he has come on to be one of the leading goalkickers in the competition . He's a very good player but more importantly a terrific character, an outstanding kid. MMA: He seems to be able to read the play for a forward very well and that's something that as a coach it is not always possible to coach . It is almost inherited at times, to be able to know where to be to catch or intercept the ball . LC: I think sometimes it can be helped if they have experience playing up on the backline . We certainly did that

REMEMBER M 11 , 1

n,in','C,iO Cr1rlTGA11

CO t0=

with Brock last year where he played a number of games in the backline pre-season and early season as well as playing up forward. I think that gives him a appreciation of his job when he is playing up forward . MMA: From going from one extreme of a young player on the way up to a guy that's just been a sensational amateur player for a long time Jimmy Bennett . Big loss to you last year with his long term injury . Now back and playing some good football, adds that stability to the backline with experience . LC: Yes he is again a very good player but more importantly again an outstanding character . A role model for this club . He has been just outstanding . There is no better trainer, no better player who prepares himself and is just a credit to himself as well our club . MMA: Looking longer term. This is a question people often ask coaches long before they are ready to make the decision, but you seem very relaxed and positive about your role at Collegians . At times we've had you at the Coaches Courses we really enjoyed your input there and you seem to really enjoy what you are doing. Is this something that, given the constraint of family and teaching, is this the role that you want to see yourself in for a few more years ? LC : I do enjoy coaching Collegians. I do enjoy coaching in the amateurs and I hope to think that we'd be able to continue on win, lose or draw . I do see myself, whilst I'm enjoying it and whilst I'm able to be supported by my employer (Marcellin College) and also my family, (wife and two boys) who really do enjoy the footy I imagine I would continue on. MMA : With Marcellin trying to mount a bit of a charge through the grades is there any suggestion that they might be pursuing you down the track in a few years time as a possible coach . No comment about that at work ?

LC : No, no-one comments at work . I've been employed at Marcellin for the last eight years and I had deliberately not coached the football side . I coach a cricket team and I try not to place myself in a position where there be any suggestion that I draw to or am interested in coaching Marcellin at this stage . MMA : From the Coaches Association thanks for your time today and thank you for your input at both of the Coaching Courses where you helped deliver some on field practical activities. We really appreciated that and we wish you well next Sunday and for the next two weeks ahead of that . We took forward to seeing Collegians play good football. ** This weekend sees the culmination of the 1996 season of Amateur footba ll with the Grand Finals in both A and B Sections . Congratulations to Old Paradians as they advance to A Section in 1997 . Best wishes are extended to Collegians, Xavs, Trinity and Parade as they battle this weekend for the ultimate prize in football, winning a grand final . For the umpiring panel, success in judged by the appointment to finals and ultimately grand finals . As the appointments are made on Thursday nights to see the matches and umpires appointed to them refer to the earlier pages. Congratulations to all field, goal and boundary umpires appointed to this weekend's round of grand finals . It is a credit to you all on a terrific season's effort . Run well, and for yourselves and the VAFAUA proud . We are sure there will be plenty of your colleagues supporting you from the hill all day. ** It has now been discovered how Tap Outs and From the VAFA columns are formulated . Phil Stevens enters Umpires Comer onto his Word Processor and cuts and pastes the good bits into his columns. So if you are reading this in Tap Outs or From the VAFA Phil's spelicheck or mouse have failed him . FX I know that I have handed out a few accolades to club people who have rung in with the scores and match details in this column a few times already this year, but in this final edition I would again thank those particular persons who carry out this important duty which has allowed us to generate ladders and get results in print. To you all you have represented your club excellently - thank you . A big off-season seems assc. •ed in the AFL with their merger problems etc. VAFA clubs who are contemplating their futures are asked to keep the VAFA informed of any developments so that fixtures for next season can be structured in light of known information . Not only information pertaining to mergers but also use of new grounds, number of teams to be fielded next year and the like .

Edited by Phil Stevens

Requests for special consideration in regards to the fixtures are given attention according to the date of receipt of the request in writing, not that decisions of this magnitude should be made quickly. x x x

At times our tribunal and investigation chairmen tend to be rather unpopular people . However the Association is indebted to a ll the magistrates who give of their time freely to assist the VAFA in this particularly delicate area . Many I am sure have enough on their plates without being given extra tasks by us, however in all cases our chairmen have been very willing to assist and have helped us enormously achieve the tribunal and investigation independence which we see as so vital .

SPORTSCOVER AUSTRALIA SPORTSCOVER SPORTSCOVER SUPREME TEAM WINNER! Darren Briggs is the winner of the 1996 Sportscover Supreme Team Competition . Darren scored 653 points and defeated Alan Flauer who scored 651 points . Whilst the two highest scorers were quite a way from the 800 points required to take off the $40 000 it appeared to be only the goal kicking area that was down on previous year's points scoring . Perhaps this was a result of this year's bad weather. The $40 000 ($20 000 for the entrant and $20 000 for the nominated VAFA club) continues to be a reality . . . . . . . . . . so prepare for the 1997 VAFA season . In accord with the rules of the competition which state that prizes must be awarded Darren .'iA

wins a retreat weekend from Sportscover (supplied by another sponsor RACV Club Travel), consisting of cottage accommodation at Stonelea, Acheron for 2 persons including a 3 course dinner and a cooked breakfast the following morning. For the weekend Darren receives $200 spending money courtesy of the VAFA. Second prize, won by Alan Flauel is a tracksuit . Sportscover can provide details on many areas of incentives and promotion for your club, so ring 9561 7577 for further details . Thanks to Sportscover's Peter Nash and Brian Woodhead (what a double - a Cats' supporter and an ex-umpire) for putting together this promotion in conjunction with the VAFA.

LOOKING BACK by Noel Rundl e 5 YEARS AGO - 199 1 dreadful week of weather preceded the Grand Final weekend . Some relief on Thursday then "monsoon" rain about noon on Friday left E .P. on the grandstand side looking like a lake . His expertise and 40 years experience as a plumber soon became evident when Executive member, John Miles, assisted by Phil Stevens, got the pumps working to leave the oval in reasonable shape. Well, Saturday, was described as an appalling day - the ground became a bog and there was a blustery wind. De La's hopes of three flags in a weekend rose when they won the Under-19 flag defeating a confident Old Xaverians 13 .17 to 9 .5 . Best were McCarthy, Crowe (4 gls .), Dean (De La) and Purcell, Collins, Hansen (O .X.) . Umpires were Bell and Clinch . It turned out a black day for Old Xaverians . As the rain kept coming, O .X . and St. Bernard's slogged it out in the 'B' Section Grand Final . Q . by q . scores were St. B . 2 .4 5 .4 5.5 5.5 (35) Old X. 1 .1 2.1 3 .3 4 .3 (27) It probably created two records at least, the lowest ever total score scored in an Amateur senior grand final, and the lowest scoring second half. Of the nine goals scored, five were kicked off the ground . The only scoring shot in the last quarter was at the 5 minute mark when Dave Taylor (Old X.) kicked at the ball in mid-air, connected and it went through for a goal . Umpires were Daigleish and Bushfield . Best were V . Comito, Carey, L. Purcell, Mallia, S . Walsh, G . Wood (3 gls .) (St. Bern.) and J . McKay, M . Hannebery, Holmes, Petroff, Doolan, McCorkell (Old X .) . Sunday was reasonable . The ground was heavy but drying out . De La made it two flags when in 'A' Reserves they produced a withering last quarter . Trailing Old Scotch 5 .5. (35) to 9 .9 . (63), they kicked 6 .2 . (38) to 0 .1 to win . Then De La devastated North Old Boys as they went on to kick 10 .8 (68) in the first half to NOB's 1 .5 (11) . It was a happy afternoon tea for De La, miserable for NOB, and a dull prospect for the second half . Well, it was a sensational second half . North Old Boys players lifted and at the last change it was 11 .10 to 9 .8 . De La were staunch in the final term and while North Old Boys had the better of the quarter, the siren found De La in front by 5 points, 12 .10 (92) to 11 .11 (83) . A truly magnificent game De La superb in the first half and NOB courageous in the second half .

Umpires were Richard Simon and Justin Toohey. Best were Mahoney, Ronchi, Prezens, Bolt, Fraser, Moloney (De La), Phyland, O'Farrell , Conti, Hanlon, Cahill, Abrahams (NOBs) . Umpires comer congratulated Peter Main, Tim Shearer, David Gourley, Denis Webster, Jason Tyrell, Andrew Hogan, Nick Edwards who had been invited to trial with AFL over the summer . Rumour has it that the O'Callaghan clan, (2 sons in senior, the other in reserves), their father, a President, player and invaluable goal umpire for the Reserves, led De La celebrations which were long and wearing. And to be politically correct, I should mention that Mary, mother and wife and also a ex-committee member, helped kick the party along . 10 YEARS AGO - 198 6 Collegians were on top all day to defeat De La 16 .19 to 12 .10, in the preliminary final to earn a second chance against North Old Boys and perhaps win its first "A" Section flag since 1961 . VFL Chief Commissioner Ross Oakley who played in the 1961 team was at the game to bring the Lions luck . And perhaps he did just that . Their accuracy 21 .6 was unbelievable . They kicked 14 goals straight until they scored their first behind in the time-on period of the third term . Co llegians lined up as fo llows : B : Laussen Williams Irvine HB : S . Hinchen (C) Schober G . Parsons C: Tregear Kahn A . Ingleton HF : Baum Bickford I. Herman F: Lemon R. Herman Pollock

Rks : Newman Hoyle K. Parsons IC : Wolff Roberts Coach : Bruce Ferguson. Umpires : J . Horwood, S. Urwin . Best were Hoyle, Tregear, Williams, I . Herman, R . Herman (Coll) and for North Turnbull , Cahill, Brown, Walters, Weir .

First and second on the ladder, Old Paradians and Old Xaverians met in "B" Grand Final . OP staved off a strong final challenge from Xavs who kicked 3 goals in 4 minutes but went down 11 .12 to 13 .10 . The OP team was : B: Grills Pritchard Nelson HB : M. Considine McCann Wood C: Busch P. Considine Exton (C) HF: Powick Skerrett Fahy F : Gleeson Way Corcoran Rks : Atta Spillane Ro e IC: Heffernan Powel l Coach : Gerard Sholly . Umpires: P. Wiseman, B. Segota. Banyule won "C" Section flag from fourth place when they led all day to easily defeat Old Trinity by 43 points . Best were O'Brien, Hoare, Brockwell (Bany) and Gorton, Cowley, Wallace (Old T.) .

Ormond won their third successive A Reserve flag to go with their U19 premiership . 15 YEARS AGO - 198 1

In an unequalled form reversal, Old Xaverians avenged their second semi 96 point defeat by North Old Boys when they controlled the "A" Section grand final throughout to win by 18 points, 15 .21 to 13.15 . Nick Burn e continued his great form at full forward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 and was a great performer around the ground . The best player on the ground was Old Xaverians captain John Noon an, who rucked strongly all day. A tight knit Old Xaverians defence shut out Norths semifinal star Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old Xaverians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody . Old Xaverians joined the select band of clubs which had won "B" and "A" Section premiership in successive years . Old Xaverians only other appearance in an "A" Section grand final was in 1964 when it was beaten by Old Paradians . Best players for North Old Boys were Burgin, Considine, S . Weir, O'Rourke, Borcich and S . Hibbert . University Blues made their stay in "B" Section worthwhile when they outclassed Coll egians 18.12 to 11 .14 . Stars for Blues were Tyquin, Fry, Yeo, Co rtese, O'Brien, Bedford, Sleeman (4 goals) and for Collegians, Wagstaff, Cook, R . Loder, T . Loder. Ethe rington and Rice . 40 YEARS AGO - 1956

A memorable year with the Olympic Games in Melbourne and an exhibition match held on the final day between VAFA and a team of amateur players from VFL and VFA. The successful VAFA team comprised R . Collins (MHSOB), G . Gill (U .Blacks), P. Harkness (0 . Scotch), L . Wakeling (0 . Parad .), A. Capes (U . Blacks), P . Rochow (Coburg), C. Empey (C'wealth B ank), R. Tindale (0. Scotch), M. Keogh (U. Blues), Ch THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1996

L. Will iams (Ivanhoe), L. Grant (Power House), J.D . Anderson (0. Melb .), R. Fenton-Smith (Ormond), J . Hayes (U . Blues), I .J. Merrick ( Coburg), Bryce Thomas (0 . Melb.), R. Pettigrove (Coburg), G . Hibbins (Coil.), Murray Mitchell (0 . Melb), Jim Hannan (0 . Melb) . Joe Kelly was coach, Les Wenker was umpire, boundary umpires were Jack Wilson and Bill Quinn and goal umpires were Ossie Meehan and Bob Coldrey . All Perrin was team manager .

Best and fairest for the season : "A" John Hayes (U . Blues), "B" Peter Falconer (Geel .), "C" D . Hoffman (ES and A), "D" B. McKenna (St Pats OC) and "E" A.C. Dick (National Bank). George MeTaggart received his "Award of Merit" from the Australian National Football council for long and valued service in the interest of the game . Ivanhoe after losing the final to Coburg by 1 point exercised their right of challenge and "what a game may have lacked in system it certainly more than made up for in excitement as at no time was there more than a difference of 6 points in the scores" . At the final siren, Ivanhoe was 2 points in front with John Manuell of Ivanhoe marking before the siren and kicking truly to give "Hoes victory by 8 points" . (Long time executive member John Miles, was a member of the team - NR) . It was Ivanhoe's first "A" Section premiership . Collegians won "B" Section, South Melbourne City "C" and Old Geelong Grammarians defeated UHSOB, De La Salle OC and UHSOB quite comfortably to take out the "D" Section premiership . (Modesty forbids the author from describing the game other than to state that he played in centre for OGG NR) . Ormond easily won Junior premiership, defeating Old Scotch.

60 YEARS AGO - 193 6 Finals time and controversy was there even in those years long ago . At the delegates meeting the Parkdale delegate alleged that Malvern , the side that finished on top in "C" Section after home and home games had "rung in" a disqualified junior league player. If the allegation turned out to be true, Parkdale would go to the "top" of the ladder, Old Xaverians into the four, and Malvern out of the four. Parkdale's allegation was that one of its players recognised a man playing for Malvern as a member of the West Park side in the Junior League who had been disqualified by the tribunal of that body when he did not appear to answer a charge of unseemly conduct . The complaint was referred to the executive committee with power to act after deciding the matter . The finding was that "while the player would not have been entitled to play with the club if he had disclosed all facts, he had not done so . Accordingly the club was exonerated from all blame but the player had his permit withdrawn . In "A" Section Collegians after a magnificent season met State Savings Bank, the last team to beat them, WAY BACK on May 30 . The game played at Oakleigh, was won easily by Collegians, 11 .18 to 6 .11, their first premiership since 1904 and sixth since VAFA was founded in 1982 .

The Association President, Mr H.J . Stewart , who captained Collegians for 10 years and was captain of their last premiership team was in attendance. Rival rovers Clarrie Vontom (Coll .) and Alby Rodda (State Savings Bank) went on to be VFL stars with St Kilda and Melbourne respectively. Victoria was successful in winning the first Australian Amateur Football Carnival, held in Adelaide while I . Galbraith, the captain, won the trophy for the best and fairest player in the carnival . Victoria beat South Australia 18 .7 to 16 .4 in the final game . Other participating states were Tasmania, New South Wales and Western Australia . Some other highlights of the season : Old Scotch missed the four after 14 successive years in the finals . Elsternwick "A" saluted the retirement of their captain, Charlie Loughbrey after 202 games. Alan Killigrew who started with St Ignatius in 1934 and transferred to Ivanhoe in 1936 when the Saints disbanded was written up : Alan Killigrew showed his skill again and was the star of the day . This youngster has kicked 40 goals to date! "Killa" won Ivanhoe's best and fairest in this year . Ivanhoe "B" went through the home and home games undefeated and then won both finals, making it 60 consecutive wins. Prominent in Geelong's "A" Section semi final team was Clem de Garis . (In the 60s and 70s Clem

was Town Clerk of Brighton and a great help to VAFA - NR) . Smallest player in the finals was FTSOB's rover Eric Gates, 57 and 9 stone 81b. For the second year in succession "A" Section best and fairest was won by Geelong rover Lindsay Hassett . Lindsay went on to captain the Australian Test XI, being one of the most stylish batsman ever to play for Australia. Playing for Coburg in "D" Section grand final was 22 year old Bill Brown . ( Bill's career extended to 1950s and as late as 1979, Bill was an interstate selector - NR) . Some of the coaches were Bill Twomey Snr (0. Melb), Nick Brushfield (Geelong), Hughie Dunbar (Ormond), "Jiggy" Harris (Ivanhoe), Vic Belcher (Brunswick), Gerry Donne lly (MHSOB), Bill Cubbins (E'wick), all former league stars . Doug Arnold played his first game for Hampton Rovers. (Doug went on to captain Victoria in 1950 and also to captain Hampton Rovers in its first and only "A" Section premiership in 1951 - NR) . Other prominent players were Harry Zachariah (E'wick), Jock McCorkell (NOB) and Alan Hamer (U .Blacks) . (Alan went on to become a Victorian Rhodes Scholar . Harry was at Elsternwick Park on Saturday 14th September, 1996 watching Old Brighton in the B Section Preliminary Final) .
