Clash of jumpers .
In first round matches (home and away matches) u,f~ visiting team must wear an alternative jumper to ttic one normally worn which is to be submitted to the ;,-aciation at least 14 days before the scheduled n,au h for approval . If this procedure is not adhered to ill (ii the VAFA will nominate the jumper to be worn by ltw visiting team. For finals matches the old rule has been changed . Do you know what the jumper clash rule for finals matches is for 1997 on? See this column next week for the answer.
Keeping the eye on the ball .
I was interested to read in last Saturda_v s Age that Cariton coach David Parkin has called for the AFL to take action against players who interfere with players behind the play and off the ball . The VAFA two year s ago invoked its harassment policy where we called on

A SECTION by Jason Frenke l
he gods of weather shone favourably on Amateur football for the second consecutive week, a s teams relish in the dry conditions that denote the early rounds of the season . Enjoy it while it lasts - the big wet is only ever a week away! . Four teams remain undefeated after two rounds last year's grand finalists have both opened up season 1997 with a strong performances, while Old Scotch and Old Haileybu ry try to take the next step after missing out in 1996 . Parade an d OM's make up the middle - inaccurate kicking cost the latter last week while the former managed to sneak in their first win against a fast finishing Bernards . And what a trying start to the season for Garry Foulds an d the Bernards crew - dumped by Xavs in the first round only to come up and lose a close one the following week - they will face an uphill battle to turn the season around from here . REVIEW The ball hadn't been bounced at Tucker Road when the Bloods posted their first major from an infringement . It was not necessarily a sign of things to come either because it was the Redlegs who started well, controlling the flow of play with fluency . But much to the despair of Michael Ford, OM's failed to capitalise on their dominance, and at half time led by just 1 I points . It was a different story after half time, as Dowsing, Morey, the Walden brothers an d David Connell all lifted a notch to help the Bloods edge in front, before a tense final quarter . Micah Berry gave the Redlegs a chance in the last term while Stuckey, Ross and Ellinghaus all played well . Melburnians finished with 32 scoring shots to 21 and lost by 9 points . Bottom line : Bad kicking is bad football .
Trinity hosted the Lions and started well to be level at quarter time, before the superiority of Collegians' running players started to control the game. The second quarter proved to be costly for Trinity : they were outscored 4 goals to 1 and then recovered to match it with the Lions in the two remaining quarters . Sloppy play resulted in turnovers, and the experienced Danny Thomson swooped in for three goals, while Tony Parkin, James Bennett and Ch ristian Davidson were also strong performers . Robert Phillips booted three goals for the home side and Malcolm Cumming was in good form while the likes of Dal rymple, Glass and Taylor can always be counted on for a good game . But Bernie Dunn won't be pleased with an 0-2 start to the season . And neither will University Blues coach Mary Tyquin . The Blues were lack-lustre in Round 1 and started slowly at home to Xavs before getting back into the contest before half-time . Bourke an d Jone s 2
combined well again for Xavs kicking nine goals between them, while Tim Ockleshaw and Dermott Dann chipped in with four, while Adi Lennen booted 5 for the Blues . Xavs kicked awav the third quarter to a commanding 46 point lead t University, to its credit, played a strong last quar to reduce the margin, with Fairbank, Mclnty Meade and Bolton all playing well, while Wood a Hawkins continue their good form for the premier ; Old Scotch never looked in trouble away to De Salle ; inaccurate kicking prevented them from wi ning by a greater margin against a persistent oppo tion . Phil Brasher and Drew Jackson played so games again, as did Matt Chun to help De La stay touch, after Scotch booted 7 .7 in a good second qu~ ter. Justin Hosking an d Kalinski booted four apie for the Cardinals and Aujurd kicked 3, while the lik of Stuart Steele, Ken Stokes, Phil Goldberg a Jeremy Laird helped Scotch to a 2-0 start to the s e son . Wayne Harmes' charges looking good early. St Bern ards gave an early indication of things come at home to Parade with a poor return of 1 .5 the first term . Steve Perrett, Paul Capes and Be Chatfield lifted the side in the second term but poor third quarter saw the home side down by thri goals at the last change . Boyd, Ciavola an d Panna ; were among the goals again for Parade, whi Brabender and Dallas played well for the secor straight week, but they nearly lost when Bernarc made a belated recovery in the last quarter . Tade5 c .7 and fell short by two points : inaccura proving costly yet again . TODAY'S GAMES Do-or-die at Elsternwick Park today as Bernard battle with Blues. One side will notch up the first wi for the season ; the other could be commended to th doldrums for 1997 . University by 21 . Trinity visit ladder leader Old Xaveri ans for the third straight encounter with a top side and will struggl to match it with the reigning A-grade premiers. Old Xav by 32 . Struggling De La Salle visit with Lion's den a Harry Trott to take on Collegians . The homeside hav too many class players all over the ground, an should win comfortably . Collegians by 61 . Third plays fourth in the match of the round a Camberwell today as one of Old Scotch an d Oh Haileybury will suffer their first defeat . The CardinaL should creep over the line in a close on by 12 point s Interesting clash at Elsternwick tomorrow as t Redlegs take on Parade . OM's will be keen to at ofrlastwek'sone-thagot-awyndshouldbeto ( strong by 28 points .

B SECTION by Terry Quir k
;r~ound 2 saw victories in all games by substanJiti~tial margins ranging from 44 points to 87 points . At B righton the home side was on target with 12 goals 2 behinds in the third quarter whilst MHSOB after a 20 point deficit at quarter time scored 19 goals to the Nodders 4 majors in the last three quarters to win the day by 74 points . Ormond gave notice of its intentions with a hard fought and serviceable performance against Therry Penola . Ivanhoe kept in touch with the four with a great second half against Banyule . The Bears were unfortunate to lose a few key players through injury, but Ivanhoe lifted remarkably to overwhelm the home side. Old Ivanhoe had 11 individual goal kickers as they destroyed the Saints. A third quarter fight back by the Saints yielded only 4 goals from 12 scoring shots as Old Ivanhoe continued to build on its lead . Today the four sides at the top of the ladder clash in matches that will not only sort out the men from the boys but will give all coaches, selectors and supporters a better idea regarding 1997 expectations. These matches will decide on the early trendsetter(s) in B Section, the winning teams then becoming targets for the lower teams over the next few weeks . Old Ivanhoe established control of the game against St Kilda South Caulfield, keeping the Saints goalless in the first quarter, Stewart and McLean were on fire for Old Ivanhoe up forward with Veal and Hempstead being rock solid in defence . The Saints lost three top players before the first bounce and did not have the manpower to compete with the OIG's runners . Paul Clements at CHB was solid whilst Kallis, Green and Gilmore were better performers on the day. MHSOB, after a slow start, absolutely blitzed Mazenod in a one-sided affair. "Super" Bamers was a sensation on the wing whilst "Genuine" Dixon marked everything. Dan Woodley ( 6 goals) was in fine form whilst Young "Man" in defence was very solid . Again, Dean Schofield (rover), Mick O'Hara (ruck) and Damien Sherlock (HFF) were better players for Mazenod who may be very keen to return to the wide spaces of Central Reserve. Old Brighton had a percentage boosting win against St Kevins after a very even first half . Murch, Perry , McLachlan and Jaekson kicked 19 goals between them with Reid and Farrell in defence continually pushing the ball forward . 4
Olive and Macey did well for SKOBS in the ruck whilst Smith and Ryan (6 goals) were fine performers . At Ivanhoe Park, Ivanhoe accounted Banyule after being buoyed by the inclusion several recruits after the granting of perm : Chris Tucker (ruck), Mark Scuderi, Jan Lynch and Peter Flynn were fine performers ii very even side . Banyule could not compete w the Ivanhoe runners after half time . It was left Rory Cullen (full back), O'Brien, Egan and Jo; Turnbull ( 6 goals) to attempt to reverse the tic The loss of Renato Dintinosante through inju in the third quarter was a disaster for the Bear , At Oak Park, Therry Penola could not per trate the solid Ormond defence led by Ma Gilmore, Steve James and Michael Shepher Paul McDonald (ruck) gave Ormond enormoi drive . Therry made a move in the third quarter as reduced the deficit to 21 points at the last chang Best for Therry Penola were Crockford, Petrevsls Cart er and Seymour . Therrywill need to combir better in the coming weeks to record an overdi . win . My selections for Round 3 . . . Old Ivanhoe will find MHSOB a huge task. Th Grammarians would normally be certainties o their home turf but I'll select the High School boy by 27 points . Mazenod at home will be in for a toug encounter against Therry Penola . Whilst fort suggests the Nodders, I predict the Therry Penol boys will improve and win the day by 14 points . Ormond versus Old Brighton will be the high light of the round . The home ground advantagi and the solid defence of Ormond should win tin day by 24 points . SKOBS take on the improving Banyule, I'll pre diet St Kevins victory by 22 points in a match thai may provide the shock of the round . ~ St Kilda South Caulfield will be in for a battle against Ivanhoe who should show its class and prevail by 39 points . Reserves: MHSOB, Mazenod . Old Brighton, St Kevins and Ivanhoe . Correspondents : By 5pm Monday, fax 9889 9014 . Thanks for the comprehensive reports to date . 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997

C SECTION by Russell Goul d
W
e now have three undefeated teams, all with quite large percentages, and three teams yet to recor d their first win . I think a couple of them should open their accounts while one will fall right away from the field, and a face a long season . Review. Marcell in travelled to Thomastown in an effort to record their first 2-0 start for many years, and after a struggle they came out on top to the tune of 22 points . Conditions were very dry and hard, and Marcellin was the first to settle, kicking the first two goals . The Eagles were getting a lot of thrust off their half back line and linked well through the centre . The second quarter was a dogged contest with no team able to break clear . The Bears brains trust worked on how to contain the Eagles forward Treganowan, and settled on crowding the backline, it seemed to work and they were down by only 10 points at the main break . The game intensified in the second half and scores were level at three quarter time . Marcellin managed to maintain possession in the last quarter by winning nearly every centre clearance and snuck home for a good win . Cox and Chambers were good in the middle for the Eagles, whilst Plant an d Ristevski worked hard for the very competitive Bears .
At Bulleen, a fired up Bu lleen/Templestowe took on a confident St .Bedes/Mentone side in what was a must win for the Bullants . The opening quarter was a good one for both sides, with high intensity both managed to kick goals, but it was the Tigers by 2 goals at the beak . Three goals each in the second quarter saw the margin remain close, but the Tigers had more use of the ball and were carrying some momentum into the second half. The Bullants tried valiantly to stay in the contest, but were struggling through the middle where the Tigers were just a bit more clean with ball harAdling, and their linkage was, at times perfect, Six goals to two in the second half gave the game to the Tigers by 45 points . Strong for the Tigers were Tully and Thompson who managed to give the Tigers a lot of push into a well organised fonvard line that converted well . Smith worked hard for the Bullants, as did Robo around the ground . The Tigers look good and today's clash against Marcellin will be a good test . At Keysborough . Old Mentonians kicked 9 goals in the first quarter to kill off St Leos Emmaus and run out eventual 48 point winners . In perfect conditions the Panthers came out breathing fire after the previous weeks defeat and fed their multi pronged attack constantly to hold a 6 goal lead at quarter time . The second term was more even, but St Leos could not manage to bridge the gap . The Panthers took over in the third stanza and went in to the orange break with a ten goal lead, St Leos remained competitive in the last term and outscored the Panthers four goals to two, but it was never going to be enough . Acreman was the Panthers major contributor with 7 goals, whilst Richard Large
6
took over in the ruck and fed the small men with east . For the Two Blues MeKenzie, Burgess and Darcy battled hard all day . It was a win for the Panthers who are surely better than theu vious weeks effort, and for St Leo's, competitivE should keep them going . The Monash Blues travelled to Bluff Road to tal Hampton Rovers, both sides looking to open accounts for the year. It was always going to be a one, and on a perfect footballing day, the Monash managed to hold out a fast finishing Hampton Rove win by 7 points . The Blues managed to squander r opportunities in front of goal which almost let the Ri in, but possession of the pill got them over the line word from the Uni was that they were very happy t the first win under their belts and will now look to solidate. For the winners Stu McClure played well hauled in close to 20 marks, whilst Webster snagf bag of goals . The Rovers should really look to this ,togenhbardwty Ajax, or they could be staring a lot of losses in the I Out at Brunswick, Ajax turned up but forgot to first half against a very strong North Old Boys team . NOB's piled on 15 goals to one in the first half to de ish a weak visiting team . They piled on another 15 â‚Ź in the second half, but the Jackers must have spla some water on their faces, as they also managed to i goals. But the NOBs were just too big, too strong an( talented for Ajax who now must rely on a lot of Undc talent to make the step up if they are to be at all petitive this year . Word is that at Ajax injuries '. depleted the club and they are already looking to future . But for NOBs it could be a case of how although they as yet have not played any of the te expected to be a force this year . Preview of Round 3 . Marcellin take on St Bedes at Mentone in a cla am looking forward to watching . On current form hard to separate the two, but to go out on a limb pick one, I would have to lean towards the Tigers Bedes/Mentone in a toss of the coin clash . I think I will go for the Old Mentonians over Manash boys. The Panthers are a good team when gc and should win by a couple of goals . Ajax are really feeling the heat this year, although they haven't won a game, I think the Roi will leave the Jackers on the bottom of the table, al by a couple of goals . No rth Old Boys after a massive win will be too str for Thomastown, although I would not expect the & sort of margin . NOBs by 30 points.

D SECTION by Peter Kelly & David Coo k he evenness in the Section now places pressure on all clubs to gain the 4 points . The 'Friars bein g the only undefeated side and the 'Shoppers' yet to open their account . The game between the 'Red Devils' who opened well , an d the 'Bloods' who got back into the game through the Livingstone brothers (six between them up to half time), was always going to the wire . The 'Devils' let themselves down with inaccurate kicking and if not for a great game again from McNamara, whose opening to the second quarter was brilliant, they may have been beaten by more . They were also well supported with a good four quarters from veteran rover Panjari and talented recruit Brad Hockey. The 'Bloods' young ruckman Birch was excellent coming off the bench in the 1st quarter, along with another ex-Under 19 player Andy Hyland proving the worth of Under 19's at clubs . The second game was one of two that were stolen by clubs at the weekend when the 'OEGs' went to sleep allowing the 'Sharks' to kick 5 unanswered goals. When the 'OEGs' awoke they managed to get to within a point before losing by 2 in the dire last few minutes . In perfect conditions a very poor standard game saw neither side able to get into their game plan . Mahoud kicked 7 to control the 'Sharks' forward line with great support from Sherman and Vaughan whilst for the visitors Evans kicked 6 and Bishop in the ruck were their main stayers .
T
The third game opened with the 'OGs' wasting their scoring opportunities to allow the 'Friars to lead at the first break . Even with great drive from Edmonds, Mithen and Howe ll (who kicked half their score) they were unable to convert . The 'Friars were able to record a comfortable win in the end after being first to the ball and running very well in the last half. Matthew Carbone put in a pearler filling the collection plate with 7 goals from a half forward flank with Houstan at Centre Half Back in total control .
In a very 'torrid' encounter at Carrol Reserve the 'Jocs' were lucky to get the points . Inaccurate kicking and undisciplined play nearly cost them which in the end was what brought the 'Shoppers' undone . A game again with a low skill level where both sides will need to lift if they intend to see the final's action . Snow , little Koppy and the skipper Cracker were great all day for the 'Jocs' . The 'Shoppers' got to within 5 points but undisciplined play reversed a free kick in the goal square and the resulting goal was the ball game. Tristan White was a focal point up forward with Hazel an d Bobetic giving plenty around the ground .
A cliffhanger between the 'Wellers and tt: 'Fields' saw the home side steal 4 points in a gait that was as unpredictable as Melbourne's weathe Marcus Scott was B .O.G and fittingly kicked tth sealer from the boundary and was ably supported h the 'Wellers Billy McKenzie and Nick Frego . Tb 'Fields' down early took the lead with 2 minutes to g but a kick for goal on the siren fell short and left thez feeling robbed . Their skipper Nigel was again dom nant with Matthews a key in the last quarte Rooster was as usual always in the thick of it and s all clubs now will be required to look to this week wit a little more endeavour and commitment to skill . LOOKING AHEAD Game 1 being played at Glenhuntly Oval . Thi week sees the 'Fields being visited by the 'Friars t convert their ways with both scribes going against th trend 9 out of 10 home sides winning and predictin a visitors win . The highlight of this match will b between the skill of onballers and prime movers i getting to the ball first in what should be a grea game . Game 2 being played at Como Park . The 'Jocs travel to the 'OG's home and will have to give mor than a disciplined commitment to team play to hav any possibility of pulling this one off. Mark Neeld ha his boys pretty well committed to their task and botl scribes predict the home side to be too strong . Game 3 played at Salesian College . The 'Bloods will wander to the 'Shoppers' monastery anc although the small ground will suit the home tean the visitors will have too much tall timber in the sec ond meeting of two of last years E section premiers The great input of skilled ex Under 19's is icing on thi cake to the 'Bloods' at this stage of the year and botl scribes predict a good win to Aquinas. Game 4 being played at the Grammar School . Th( 'OEGs host the 'Red Devils' in a game that could g( either wa_v. If McNamara is left unchecked and agair provides the same drive then the home side ma} struggle but if Bishop and Evans fire up again ther the host should win . The Captain selects the host. while Chocolate selects the 'Red Devils ' Game 5 being played at Gordon Barnard Reserve The 'Sharks' travel North to take on the 'We llers ir what will be a very close game . E EAST SECTION by Barry Hicke y
~ __
nly 2 rounds completed and already we have a serious boom team in Kew, who have blitze d strong opponents on each of their outings . A Kew revival has always been on the cards, and it will be good for Amateur football if the turnaround proves to be a permanent feature . Bu ll een Cobras also look as though they are realizing the potential many of us considered they had last season . Full marks to the CEO for taking up the vexing matter of lower level sides being plundered of their better players to top up the higher section clubs . It is not an easily solved problem, but it does require attention if the VAFA is to maintain a viable U19 competition, amongst other things . No club, to my knowledge would ever stand in the way of any young player aspiring to play at the top levels of Amateur or AFL/VFL football, though there may be a fine line between satisfying that personal ambition and the exploitation of it by some of the more experienced Zoltan Karpa rthy's in the recruitment business . (ZK was the My Fair Lady character referred to in the immortal lines ; 'Oozing charm from every pore , He oiled his way around the floor . . .') Last Week Old Carey met Eley Park at Bulleen in a game where the final scores belied the effort put in both sides, neither of which had anybody left on the interchange bench by 3/4 time. Ken Walker, the solitary field umpire wasn't impressed with the size of Dunshea oval, but still had enough left in him to run up to the social room afterwards . The Sharks had problems with the C's rebounding out of defence and speed round the flanks, but they stuck to their tasks and will be improved by the run . Centre, Andy Hi lle ; ruck, Daniel Grant ; David Bowen on the ball ; and the Payne brothers in the blackline did well for the Sharks. The C's were well served by flankers, Matt Curry, Leigh Small and Ch ri s Withington .
Kew trounced Yarra Vall ey at Victoria Park after establishing a big lead in the first term . Yarra could not come to terms with Kew's long kicking and strong marking round the ground and in gen; eral had 'one of those days' . Kew are looking extra ominous at this early stage and have to be regarded as the section benchmark . Peterson and Harrington stood out for Yarra, while Kew had stand out players in Rick Puiverenti (6 goals), Bruno Dimasi ( BOG), and CHF, Greg Porte and CHB, Jamie Bell . Hawthorn Citizens tried hard agains t 0
Richmond Central, but were completely outmatched . Phil Avery, ruck roving , Steven Duff at HFF, and Shane Parker strove valiantly for the Citizens . Chris Andonopoulos played a blinder on his 50th with Chris Shannon impassable at CHB. Bulleen Cobras overwhelmed Eltham Coll egians as can be seen from the scores and that is as much as this scribe knows . Chirnside Park sussed out the opposition . TODAY
Eley Park meet Kew and will have some problems containing them in their present fierce form . The Sharks do man up well and Kew's long game will not be suited by the smaller area of the Whitehorse Reserve but even so, it is hard to envisage Kew not coming home with less than a 6/7 goal win . Yarra Va ll ey play Hawthorn Citizens and wi ll be in an ugly frame of mind after suffering one of their infrequent defeats . Yarra will have too much talent in too many places and will win comfortably . Richmond Central and Bulleen Cobras should be a ball-tearer and just to ensure there is a Bulleen Cobras report next issue I will be a spectator at the Loughnan Oval . Centrals possibly have a height advantage over the Cobras which will come in handy if the day is fine but the Cobras now seem to be putting four quarters together and will be very hard to beat. IT go for the Cobras by a few points in a very tight game, which won't worry the Yellow and Blacks one bit, because they love proving me wrong! Eltham host Chirnside Park on the Main College Oval and will still be reeling from the hammering they copped last week from the Cobras . However, this is another game, and being a young side the Turtles will have a healthy stock of resilience . Not enough thought to trouble the Pan :ers today, who should be able to pick up the four points with a bit to spare . Old Carey's turn for a bit of reconnaissance . Reserv es winners should be: Kew, Yarra Valley . Bulleen Cobras and Chirnside Park . Correspondents the Monday contacts are 9547 9144 and fax 9547 7764 . My apologies to Brendan Egan of Chirnside Park, plus Simon Pickett of Richmond Central whose messages I did not receive until after the Round 2 copy deadline . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997

No surprises this week with talk already centring on how far Uni Blacks . Garry Connolly will have his work cut out keeping a lid on things at Ransford Oval with "Planet" Hall still to return from injury and only the possibility of another wet winter appearing to stand in the way of his charges . Round 2 review Down at Sayers Rd Old Westbourne bu il t on their two good quarters last week stringing together four quarters of systematic and effective football to bring West Brunswick back to earth . The Warriors took the initiative into the breeze in the first term and never relinquished control of the game to provide an ideal backdrop for Des Horsburgh's 50th . Best for the locals were Baroo, Benny, Ash and Juck while, for the Magpies, Newitt, Smythe and Brown toiled hard . In the twos the result was reversed with Khoury, D'Andrea an d Cocolaras leading the black and whites to their first victory of the year and exposing the lack of depth that may be the only thing standing between Westbourne and a much improved position at the end of the season . Uni Blacks ran out comfortable winners after getting an early 5 goal jump on North Brunswick at Allard Park . Predictably the physical pressure increased in the second half sending Doc Costello into paroxysms on the sidelines but making little difference on the scoreboard . Lynch put his hand up in the forward line for the students minus Hall, while Little and Smith were the driving forces in the centre where they were given first use of the ball by big men MeA rthur & Vaughan . The Blacks ressies again ran out comprehensive winners .
UHSOB confirmed that they can't be taken lightly this year with a spirited performance at Brens Oval that saw Williamstown's slender lead under threat until midway through the final term . Both teams had a number of players out, among them High skipper Craig Skinns, but it was the 10 goal performance of Greg "Tunnel" Warren from a forward pocket that kept Willy in the box seat . Coach Alan Elliot got stuck into his side's passengers at the final break assuring them they'd have plenty of opportunity to make up for a loss down at Fearon Reserve on the Sunday . The visitors took the message to heart, kicking away during the final term before High managed a couple of consolation goals . Dave "BR" Lee and Muzza Ho ll and were the other key contributors wit h
Williamstown also taking a hard fought win in the early game . Accuracy appears to have been the differenc in this year's first battle of the students with profligate Swinburne failing to capitalise on more scoring shots as La Trobe chalked up the. first win for '97 . The Trobers ran out easy winner in the twos despite their own case of the yips i front of goal. Uni Reds took advantage of the bye to hol their annual game between players of city an, country origin (and a few ring-ins) with congratu lations to former coach Mick Farrell for ending hi year long drought with a convincing win at th, head of the straw munchers . The return of Roe McLennan an d Greg Cook among the highlight on another perfect day for football . Preview round 3 This week's Brunswick Derby may not be quit( as breathlessly anticipated as the Rumble in thf Jungle (a wheeze of anticipation might be mor( appropriate at this level) but the game is crucial tc the prospects of both sides . Rope a dope is likely tc be a confusing tactic with a winless North Brunswick predicted to be too desperate over the 12 rounds . North by 2 goals over their Western neighbours . The possible return of Hall and the need to reward some players from their rampant ressies will strengthen Blacks who should account for the improved UHSOB at home by 9 goals . Williamstown also expect a few back for their clash with Swinburne and should be hungry enough after last week's close run thing to kick away by a bakers' dozen down at Fearon Reserve . The Reds travel to Sayers Rd with an unblemished record against the Warriors who are a five goal better side at home. Results from the last 2 weeks make this the toughest game of the round to pick but it's hard to go past Old Westbourne who should run out 18 point winners, a tip that's likely to see this scribe run out of Fitzroy . La Trobe has the bye . Correspondents please fax 9243 4920 by 1 .30pm, call 9482 5492 until 8 .00pm or
email micj@netspace.net .au
I'm keen for details of both games from both clubs so drop me a line . Mic James 9482 5492 micj@netspace .net .au

mmy picks a 'full house' (5 winners) and K .B . only a'treble' . The 'Brain' leads the tipping 9 t o 7. After 2 rounds, 4 teams remain undefeated, 4 yet to record a win and 2 with a 1 win/1 loss record. This weeks round of matches will start to sift out the 'wheat' from the 'chaff . Review - Round 2 St . Mary's took control early against Oakleigh and with great pressure and a running brand of footy went to the sheds at 1/2 time 9 majors ahead . Oakleigh with an edge in fitness trimmed up a 10 goal 3/4 quarter deficit to a respectable 24 pis come siren time . Best for the Saints were Duke, Theoharris and Stone . Power House after an even first half against Elsternwick seized the game early in the third with six unanswered goals . The 'Wicks' were unable to match the 'House' in teamwork or quick movement of the football . For Elstermvick, Scott Clements with eight snags and Leigh Murphy were best whilst for Power House, Robertson, Birch, Gi ll were rated best in a good overall team effort that saw the 'House' home big victors by 73 points . Once against Glenhuntly were slow to start and the game was all but over by quarter time with St . Pat's Mentone 'Vultures' kicking out some six goals ahead . The closest the 'Hunters' got was at the finish (8 pis) once again catch up football was the 'Hunters' lot . MVP's for Glenhuntly were Rossiter, Kouts and Turner . Peninsula 'Pirates' lacked intensity early in the game against Monash Gryphons who to their credit from the outset took the game right up to the visitors by playing strong, hard attacking footy . Scores were level at lemon time and all was set for a rip snorter last term . Not to be the Peninsula boys steadied and through sheer perseverance and a couple of great individual performances were able to ultimately win convincingly by 44 points . For the 'Pirates', better players were McLorinan, Garath Park, Farrer and for the gallant Gryphons, Hetherington, Davey and Gilchrist .
Southbank had a day out at the expense of ANZ Albert Park in a game that was played in great spirit down at Mackie Road Reserve . The first quarter was very competitive, however from there on in, after the 'Bankers' honed their skills to the smallish' oval, it was all over red rover . Best for ANZ were Saunders, McLellan and Smith whilst for Southbank the'Umbilical' brothers, Bunny and Easty were great and ably supported by Kip . (Apologies to many others) . Preview - Round 3 St . Mary's versus Monash Gryphons. Winning 14
form is good form (just ask T .B .). Confidence mi be high in the 'Saints' camp and probably a lit low at the 'Gryphs'. St . Mary's just by 11 poii but beware, a win is right around the corner Monash . Good effort last week from the Gryp will make it a danger game for the boys from GI Iris but theirs has been an excellent start, one it will continue today. Peninsula versus Power House . A 'bloc buster' and the 'House' have to overcome the trE el bug . Having now tasted victory I reckon Power House going on with it against the 'Pirat whom I believe have yet to hit top form. T 'House' by 15 pts . Wrong again KB . The Pirates home are usually awesome as shown by their foz against the Krushers, and today will be no diffE ent as they knock the House back to reality will great big jolt . Elsternwick versus Glenhuntly. No love Ic between these two and it won't be a place for t faint hearted . Although yet to open their accoun select the 'Hunters' to do the deed and salute cot fortably by 27 points . Not an easy one to tip th Even though losing both the Hunters have be, competitive, they must play for four quarters ai work hard to stop the Wicks firepower up forwar if they do this they can and will win . Sorry Max . St . Pat's Mentone versus Southbank. Bo teams will flex their muscles to gain the early se son psychological advantage . On a form Iii through Glenhunfly the 'Bankers' are just a liti bit ahead, however the home ground advantage the 'Vultures' negates this to a degree . Wearing n heart on my sleeve and leaving the 'Brain' at hon (mine not Tommy's) I'll pick Southbank by 19 pi You're well known for leaving your Brain in maj places KB not just at home, but you are spot ( here the Tigers are in excellent touch and will e the Vultures dead and enjoy the spoils at Khyat ; Oakleigh versus ANZ Albert Park . Baring draw one of these teams will be breathing a litt easier on Saturday night . Form of both has be( very ordinary to date . At home the 'Krushers' a entitled to start favourite, however on a form Iii though St . Mary's I lean to ANZ to get home by pt . Disagree KB with my tip Oakleigh to Krush tl Zedders . Rund 2 has come and gone and with it the core discrepancies from Round 1 . A mor e even round of football last week, with sides grappling with one another to make a strong start to the season, with more guaranteed battles today . Review - Round 2 Section 1
Uni . Blues bolted from the blocks against Old Brighton and with (17) first 1/2 goals to (3), the 'Tonners were never in the hunt. Johnson booted (12), while Kordick, Fricker and Camm did what they liked for the Blues . For the 'Tonners Parnham, Raju an d Alderson were consistent performers . Likewise De La Salle jumped Old Carey at Bulleen and held a healthy (5) goal lead at 1/2 time . An even next three quarters followed however the opening term by the D's was the difference in the finish . S. Wood, Bond and Hood were best for the OC's with M . Harber, Bonnici and Waters (4) excellent for the winners . At 1/2 time of the Mazenod, St . Bernards clash both teams had had (12) shots on goal, however the 'Nodders were the more accurate and in the second 1/2 booted (12) goals to (4) to run out easy winners . Egan, Garbe llini, Rigg and Fotiniotis (4) were unstoppable for the `Nodders, with Bonnici, Mount and Kavanagh battling valiantly all day for the Bernards . Old Xavs bounced back into action after their first round defeat to crush the OM's by 100 points . With Barrett (7) and Hilbert (6) on fire up forward and other winners in Healy, Webb an d Jones the Xavs were back to their best. The OP's sounded a warning that their first up win against the reigning premiers was not a flash in the pan with a commanding (20) goal drubbing of SKOBS. Rees, Warren and Green (4) were dangerous all day for the OP's . Section 2 Warringai bounced back from their first round drubbing to take the lead at 1/2 time from Old Camberwell , but were unable to hang on in the finish with the 'Wellers finishing the better. Yin, Wilson an d Pope (3) were great players for the Redbacks, while Smith (6), Scott and Dam named best for the 'Wellers . Old Scotch outpointed Whitefriars at home, but not before getting a fright in the third term by being held goalless and trailing at 3/4 time . However Terry Kendall must have called on something special as the Scotchies rammed on (4) goals to (2) in the final stanza to win eventually . Junkeer, Frankenburg and Thompson best for the Scotchies, as wer e 16
Northey, Reid and ' I ! Winch for the 'Friars . Collegians had their match ---' wrapped up against the Blacks at 1/2 time with, comfortable (25) point buffer, which they added t( only marginally in the finish . For the Lion: Champion, Gnomatka (9) and Samuel were soli( performers . Beaumaris returned to the winner; list at the expense of rival Old Haileybury a McKinnon Reserve . The Bloods obviously thankin~ their lucky stars the Sharks did not kick straight P. Kennedy, Quin and McKenzie were hard to gc past for the Sharks . Marcellin outlasted a fast fin~ ishing Will iamstown at home to take the point ; and although Mackley, C . El Houli (3) a n Manning battled hard for the CY's it was to be i n vain come siren time . Section ( 2) Blue Ormond surprised everyone by jumping the 'Ashers at home and with a strong first 1/2, as well as keeping their opponents goalless in the final quarter the 'Monds won their second on the trot . Captain Brown once again was in everything with Naughton (9) and Beckett having fine matches for the 'Monds . For the 'Ashers Arnot, Kazenwadel and Sullivan battled valiantly all day. Hampton Rovers jumped the OGs in the first quarter but could only manage another (6) goals for the match, while the OGs piled on (10) goals after 1/4 time to go down by just (4) points . Co ll ins, Wilson and McGregor kept the OGs in the match, while the Rovers were best served by Parkinson, Rehn an d Iles. Old Xaverians (2) overcame a slow start to defeat De La Salle (2) in an entertaining match at Toorak Park . Down at 1/4 time the Xavs lifted in all departments to give Peter Call inan his first VAFA victory . For the Xavs Bowden, Hart and Hoare were fine players with Coburn booting (8) majors . For the D's Mystakidis, Donnison and Campbell never gave in. In the match of the round MHSOB failed to live ap to their first round results and were mauled by the St . Bedes Mentone Tigers after 1/4 time, managing only (5) goals to (15) in the final (3) quarters . Ryan, Dwyer, Kingwell (4) and Wintle dominated for the Tigers with, Norman, Casse ll and Taylor (3) keeping the High competitive . AJAX had the bye. Section (2) Re d Old Paradians (2) proved that their first round win was no fluke when they decimated Yarra Cjl TuP onnnTCI 10 o- ron, . co . ., .,e
after 1/2 time in their match at Bundoora . `;all ey t r~11 even first 1/2 the OP's piled on (10) seel(i h,lf goals to win comfortably over Yarra. K,,dford, Galvin and Buttler best for the OP's, T Wapshot, Hale and Tyshing never-say-die rtormers for the Yarra . Therry Penola travelled E3ulleen where old Trinity skipped away to a 1/4 time lead. Unfortunately for Therry penola tl ey were never quite able to bridge the gap and % : ere defeated by (6) goals in the finish . J . were best Van fo for Engelen, D'ApranO a n Smith were 1errr Penola . Aquinas completed their second ~ in in two weeks by running away form St WP in the second 1/2 of their Leos Emmaus 1„h. Morel, Willis (3) and Carr battled manfully for the Leos, but to no avail . Old Ivanhoe showed that [heywill need to be taken seriouslyin'97 with ,1 l5l goal win against Chirnside Park at home . Flad the 'Hoes kicked straighter they may well have hooted the sweep of the round, with (24) minors for ti c day. Dowd, Gilderdale, Oates and Coyne (5) the 'Hoers best, with Westmore, Adams and Violi it, the action for the 'Parkers . No rth Old Boys had the bye . Previews - Round 3 Section 1 Old Brighton host Old Carey at Brighton and with both teams coming off losses last weekend both coaches will have their charges pumped up for this match . At home it is always hard to go past the `Tonners, and they will win today. De La Sall e clash with Mazenod at Waverley Park in what will be a great even contest . Both team possess potent forward lines, damaging mid-fielders and attackIng, backlines . In a toss up the 'Nodders . St . Bernards host the Xavs and I cannot see the Bernards opening their account against the Xavs today. The OM's must bounce back today but wiIl find the OP's a tough nut to crack . The OP's are playing fine football at present and I cannot see them losing today. Uni . Blues welcome SKOBS and by the day's end the SKOBS will well and truly know that they are in Section 1 . The Blues comfortably. Selections : Old Brighton, Mazenod, Old Xaverians, Old Paradians & Uni . Blue s Section 2 Old Camberwe ll host neighbours Old Scotch at the Gordon Barnard Reserve and although were run close by Warringal last week will find the Scotchies too strong today . The 'Friars host Co ll egians at Donvale and will bounce back strongly after last week's hiccup against Old Scotch . Uni. Blacks host Old Haileybury at McAlister Oval and will be keen to post their first victory today . The Bloods will have other ideas and will win . Beaumaris host Marcellin at Banksia Reserve in what promises to be a fast and furious match . The Eagles are playing well, and will continue on in that same vein today. Warringal host Will iamstown at Beverley Road and although they 0 TNF AAAATFI IR F(1(1TRA1 I FR 1QQ7
ran the 'Wellers close last week will battle to defeat the CY's today . Selections: Old Scotch, Whitefriars, Old Haileybury, Marce ll in & Williamstow n Section ( 2) Blue
AJAX host a pumped up Ormond at Mackie Road, and with (3) wins staring the 'Monds in the face they will today prove too slick for the Jackas . Monash Blues will bounce back this week against Old Geelong and bring a smile to new coach's face Nick Karavias. unfortunately the same cannot be said for Tony McNamara of the OG's . Hampton Rovers await the Old Xavs (2) and will prove a handful running out winners by (5) goals . De La Salle (2) play host to MHSOB who will bounce back today and bring a smile back to coach Ian Radlow's face. St . Bedes Mentone Tigers have the bye . Selections : Ormond, Monash Blues, Hampton Rovers & MHSOB Section (2) Red Yarra Valley will be looking to bounce back today against Old Trinity at home but will find the OT's overall skill and strength too hard to match up . Therry Penola and Aquinas clash in the match of the section with Aquinas' better form to date the only leaning factor today separating the sides . St . Leos Emmaus WP and Old Ivanhoe clash at 1 .00pm at Bennettswood and going on recent form the newcomers Old Ivanhoe must start favourites . In the final match Chirnside Park host North Old Boys and although neither team has set the world on fire yet, the fresher NOBS will emerge victorious today . Old Paradians (2) have the bye . Selections : Old Trinity, Aquinas, Old Ivanhoe & North Old Boy s Next Week's Matches and U19 Section Umpires - Continued on Page 23

Winning Edge Presentations
CLUB XVIII SECTION by Norm Nugen t
Round 2, which saw climactically perfect conditions for football, brought many high scores, a few surprise results and another 75% success rate for your tipster. On a sadder note foundation Club XVIII member Old Geelong has withdrawn through lack of players . RESULTS OF ROUND 2 SECTION 1 . Despite my preview the reality for Old Scotch was that they were not talented enough to challenge Old Brighton Bloods, who won convincingly by forty five points . Old Scotch now find themselves in the unusual situation of being outside the top four after two rounds. Mazenod did win convincingly over De La Salle who were not talented enough to extend the talented Mazenod combination . With their winning margin of sixty six points adding to their percentage Mazenod lie in second place, from which they will prove difficult to dislodge . Collegians proved far too strong for St Bernards, who disappointed again . The "Lion's" margin of fortyeight points clearly demonstrated their superiority . St Bernards need to quickly take stock or they will not be in a position to defend their title in August . Old Xaverians again have placed a deposit on the premiership, as a result of their ninety-nine point victory over cellar dweller Old Melburnians . Only inaccurate kicking prevented Old Xaverians reordering a wider winning margin . St Kevins had the bye . SECTION 2. Newcomers, Syndal Tally Ho, despite their long journey to Keilor had the good form shown by Old Essendon Grammarians in Round 1, showed they are ready to be a force in this section . Old Essendon Grammarians were forced from the top four by the Syndal Tally Ho margin of fifty-eight points . As I predicted Mt Lilydale did win their first match at the expense of Therry Penola, who find themselves on the bottom of the ladder after two crushing defeats . Mt Lilydale won their first game by seventy seven points and restored their percentage to a respectable figure. Monash Whites took the points against Thornbury-Cougars who lacked the talent to match that of the Students from Clayton . Monash Whites, who won by fifty-seven points, jumped to fourth place as a consequence. Kew won on forfeit from Old Geelong while Marcellin enjoyed the advertised bye .
PREVIEW OF ROUND 3 SECTION 1 . Early season form suggests that today' s Old Brighton Bloods versus Mazenod match coub well be a preview of the 1997 final series . Today hom ground advantage will favour Old Brighton Blood who have already defeated one 1996 finalist . Thei visitors, Mazenod have in 1997 defeated two of thi 1996 finalists and appear to be the big improver ir the Section . Although the match will be played on thf Brighton beach Oval I am selecting Mazenod to wir narrowly. Collegians, who have commenced with two clear wins today meet De La Salle who are yet to win . Despite a sixth sense telling me that De La Salle will win I must select Collegians, who se early form suggests they are becoming one of the strong sides of the Section . Last season's two Club XVIII premiers meet at St Bernards . The home side has done nothing of note this season whereas Old Xaverians have again proven their talent. Today they should win again despite the home ground advantage held by St Bernards . Old Scotch, should rebound today with victory over St Kevins who may need the game to regain match fitness. Old Melburnians have the bye . SECTION 2 Two newcomers, Syndal Tally Ho and Mt Lilydale meet on Jordan Reserve . Syndal Tally Ho could hardly have made a more auspicious debut than they did last week which warrants my belief that they are a force in the Section . I expect Syndal Tally Ho to be too strong for Mt Lilydale whose form fluctuated between Rounds 1 and 2 . Kew play Monash Whites who will find the confines of Victoria Park very different from the wide wings of the University Ovals . Kew, who in Round I revealed pre 1996 form are my selection . Marcellin travel across the northern suburbs to play Thornbury Cougars, who failed in their first Club XVIII game last week . Monash Whites are the common denominator of form for this match as Marcellin defeated them in Round i and they defeated Thornbury Cougars in Round 2 . Therefore Marcellin should win this match . I know this inductive thinking cannot be applied to football but I still select Marcellin. Therry-Penola and Old Essendon Grammarians who met in Round 1 have the byes .

COACHES' CLIPBOARD A FCANAFA
THE HOWS OF MAINTAINING YOUR ACCREDITATION AS AN ACCREDITED VAFA COACH . When newly accredited coaches have completed their level one course, an Australia n Coaching Council accreditation log book would be sent to each successful candidate . From that time onus is on each coach to gain enough points to maintain his or her coaching accreditation over the next four year period . Level One Coaches need to accumulate 220 points over the four years . 1) Being a member of the AFCA - all VAFA coaches are - 15 point s 2) Actively coaching a team - 25 point s 3) Attending a professional development evening 15 points These points add up to 55 in one year, multiply that by four and you have 220 points which gives enough points to maintain your accreditation . Level Two and Three Coaches need to accumulate 300 points over the three years . These coaches can use the same formula as above.
1) Presenting at an accredited course being Level One, Two or Three . 2) Conducting a coaching clinic . 3) Publish an article in a coaching update or newsletter. At the end of the four years after the log books have been submitted to your AFCA branch (AFCA/VAFA) with enough points, $10 is sent to your AFCA branch and your accreditation is renewed for another four years . Your VAFA Coaches Association this year is conducting four Professional Development Evenings of which the first is on at Hawthorn Football Club on Wednesday night the 14th of May starting 4 :45pm at Glenferrie Oval, interested coaches are asked to contact Brett Connell at VAFA Administration (9531 8333) to reserve a spot before Friday May 9 . We will view training and then be addressed by one of the coaching staff . Other Professional Development Evenings will be conducted in June, mid August and November with more details to follow .
In addition to this a Coaches Education area is included to gain more points .

Club supplied goal and boundary umpires can lodge through their clubs club requests for an investigation against players guilty of these offences - that is if the club feels the field umpires did not deal with the situation effectively .
Comments cause discussion My comments last week relating to players moving from lower section clubs to A section clubs certainly has prompted great interest - for example see Barry Hickey's column in today's issue (E East) . The matter is sure to be discussed at Monday's executive meeting and any interesting points should be directed to myself in writing this coming Monday . 28
Lest We Forge t I hope that all VAFA supporters remembered why we had a holiday on Friday . A young lad I spoke to at the Geelong game last Sunday said it was because Collingwood was to play Essendon so Mr Kennett said .we can all have a holiday to watch the game ." We still do live in a great country and that is because others before us have made a sacrifice . in many instances the supreme sacrifice, to enable Australians all to embrace and enjoy the things we have which we probably take for granted .
Do you know the answer ? Third caller to my message bank 0412 773 900 telling me the name of the former VAFA umpire now with the AFL wins "Going Away" by Martin Flanagan . Leave your name and contact number . No winner last week . THF AAAATFI I61 CnnTCni i - .nn-,

F. 1 . D. A. FTTAhe sun shone and the football played was I entertaining . Welcome back to another season of FIDA football . REVIEW - ROUND 1 Karingal opened their account at the expense of Maribyrnong in a replay from last year's Division 2 Grand Final . IN an even match Karingal's 3 goals to (1) in the third quarter seeing them home comfortably in the finish . The Marlins received a forfeit from Broadmeadows, who we hope will field a team in 1997 . Heidelberg played the newly formed Lions and got the shock of their lives with the Lions playing good football and having strong numbers for their first up match . However in the finish it was the experienced players of Heidelberg who saw them through . Parkside (1) hosted the newcomers Ballarat and the boys from Ballarat really hit their straps winning by a huge amount and sending them well on the way to being a very strong side in 1997 . Werribee forfeited to Parkside (2), and like Broadmeadows we hope they have sufficient numbers to be competitive this season . Ringwood proved too strong for Hawthorn Citizens although the encouraging signs were the healthy numbers each side had on the sidelines. In Bendigo the home side won a great match against Keilor. Although scores were unavailable from this match at the time of printing form all accounts the match was one of very high quality . Bendigo (2) had the bye .
ROUND ONE - PREVIEW
At Brunswick on Sunday Maribyrnong fac( the might of Heidelberg and althougt Maribyrnong matched up well with Karingal la& week, they will find Heidelberg a little more sklllec today. Broadmeadows play Hawthorn in whai shapes as an extremely close match shoulc Broadmeadows be able to field a team this week . On the presumption that they do Broadmeadow, will win . Keilor play Karingal in what will be the closest match of the round . Karingal are the newcomers to Division 1 and today the Keilor players will inflict Karingal's first defeat for sometime . Parkside (1) and (2) will play their match as a curtain-raiser to the VAFA match Parkside versus Old Essendon . In a match that sees Parkside (1) keen to win their first match this should be their opportunity today. The Marlins travel to Ballarat an d will find this team a harder nut to crack than most hey encountered in 1996. Travelling should not affect the Marlins who will win a close match by less than a goal . Bendigo matches this weekend will see Bendigo (1) host the Lions at their new home ground the North Bendigo Oval, Atkins Street, North Bendigo . The Lions were impressive last week and will defeat Bendigo at home today . while Bendigo (2) take on Ringwood, who will give their all but fail to kick a winning score today . Player of the Round - Round 1 Michael Mazzarotti (Ballarat Knights ) Reminder: Monday April 28, Elsternwick Park, 7 .30pm . FIDA Delegates' Meeting .
