South), University Blacks (E Central) and Yarra Valley Old Boys (E East) . Not only premiers but also worthy teams to be promoted to D section for 1998 . A mini "win" also to St Pats-Mentone, who lost the final to Southbank, but who won promotion to D section for next season (12 teams) as they were the highest placed team at the end of the home and away matches who lost a Grand Final. Other premierships being contested this weekend being C, D and Under 19 sections and next weekend the two big ones - in A section will it be Old Xaverians (three in a row) or will Old Haileybury or Old Scotch who will come from behind and steal the flag from the reigning premiers and outright favourites for this year's flag ? In B section last weekend Old Brighton looked fairly impressive and should win. I'm sure St . Kevins and Melbourne High School Old Boys who meet this weekend for the right to challenge Old Brighton will have other ideas . Noel Rundle has dared me to predict the four senior premierships left in the season, and as Treasurer has promised me a Christmas bonus should I pick four out of four - so here goes : Old Xaverians (A) ; St Kevins (B); North Old Boys (C) and in D section - Old Geelong!(l really need to pick a draw here - living in Beaumaris but being a Geelong fan )
Another successful evening was held last Monday evening at the Carlton Crest Hotel. I would like to, on behalf of the Executive, thank my dedicated Administrative staff of Sue Anderson, Brett Connell and Angela Giles for their fantastic contribution to what I thought was a wonderful evening . I should also include in this list part time staffer Cliff Bastow (VAFA registration secretary) who collates all votes during the season, prepares all printouts and in general is at my side throughout the night keeping me "on cue". Each club secretary has had mailed to him or her a full rundown of the votes earned for their club so those interested should contact their club for all details . Major award winners were: A sec . Best and fairest - Michael Blood (Old Xaverians) B sec . Best and Fairest - Marcus Dollman (St Kevins) C sec Best and Fairest - Anthony Macgeorge (St Bedes Mentone Tigers ) D sec . The Blades Club Champion of the Year received 51500 .As announced last week Old Xaverians took out this award . UHSOB and Beaumaris received S1500 each for jointly sharing the Quit Incentive Club Awards whilst St . Kevins received $500 for being runner-up in this award. University Blues Under 19 team won the 1997 Quit Most Disciplined Team Award .
And now onwards for the biggest prizes of all . .A FI.AG! Well done to the E section premiers Southbank (E
Picture the scene . Yours truly takes the call (late Saturday morning) that a young goal umpire appointed to do the B sec. Reserves final is so sick he can't officiate . With only minutes to the game quick phone calls to possible replacements are unanswered . In walks an old mate from Haileybury coaching days . Roscoe dons white sun hat, white slicker, VAFA tie, is thrust two flags and is propelled out on to the turf of EP. An independent observer (from the AFL) has been asked to have a close look at the younger" umpire as, if he looks the goods, he will be given an U/ 19 grand final and will possibly be invited to the VFL next year . John Hall (goalies advisor) thinks "his" boy will get a great report - he is aghast to read "his" boy appeared too casually dressed ; walked too far from his behind the goals area : engaged in social banter with spectators and at the breaks seemed to be too preoccupied with talking to the CEO and adopting an altogether "English cricket umpire" approach to this exacting science. Se ri ously, best wishes to Shannon and thanks to Roscoe .

Confident Old Xaverians supporters were rubbing their hands with delight on Sunday evening having witnessed Xavs dispose of Scotch in a gritty victory which secured a berth in next week's Grand Final . An incredible feat - the threepeat - is up for grabs and last Sunday's win placed Xaverians in the box seat to claim the premiership for the third consecutive year. If Xavs want to get that winning feeling they ought to gather around ruckman, skipper an d Woodrow Medal winner Michael Blood, who took out the coveted award last Monday night . It will sit nicely alongside his premiership medallions and his Jock Nelson award, too . Blood won a prize in the raffle on the night too, proving he just cannot put a foot wrong . Spare a thought, however, for the enigmatic Redleg Micah Ber ry , who polled the highest number of votes but was ruled ineligible because of a suspension . It was a phyrric victory of sort for Xavs, and bloody too . Gladman an d Brennan were among the casualties in a tough. physical encounter. From the opening bounce Xavs showed a preparedness to work hard for the ball and pressure the opposition when, they weren't in possession and Scotch were significantly frustrated in their efforts to utilise a stiff breeze blowing on the scoreboard end in the first term . Ockleshaw's early goal into the breeze proved to be handy and when Scotch had registered just 2 .3 for the quarter, an opportunity had been missed . Just how great that opportunity was became evident in the second quarter when Xavs booted 9 .4 to 0.1 in a match-winning quarter of football . The Cardinals looked at all sea as the ball was repeatedly swept into the Xavs forward line with ease . Dillon, Wood and Hunter were all among the goalkickers that term as Xavs on-ballers and forwards slotted through majors from everywhere . Facing an eight goal deficit at half-time . the Cardinals' fate was all but sealed . Wayne Harmes implored his players to salvage something for themselves - and the Scotch faithful - in his three-quarter time address, and to some extent they did with a six goal final quarter into the wind but one suspects the Cardinals might just be a bit toey as they face a confident Bloods side today . On the bright side for Scotch was the ubiquitous Rohan Price's effort last Sunday, working hard and running all day in a desperate bid to give the Cardinals drive while Wilson and Collins continued their good form from the home-and-away series . Ultimately it was a day for the defenders, however, with Brushfieid nullifying any impact Aujard hoped to have on the game and Holmes blanketing the dangerous Campbell Heath . At the other end of the ground . Adam I
Nettleton stopped Dan Richardson from ( f~ having any influence while Jeremy Laird had a more even duel with Matt Bourke, who finished with four goals. PREVIEW Either Nettleton or Laird will be assigned the task today on the Bloods burly full forward Efstathiou . The youngster has in bursts proven to be a potent target in front of goals . Combined with Andrew Walden's leading role as playmaker in the Bloods forward line, Efstathiou, Hucker and Morey are more than capable of kicking a winning score and should prove to be a handful for the likes of Nettleton, Holt, Laird and Grigg, who could find himself standing Walden . Scotch are not short on scoring potential either although it took them far too long to get a decent score on the board last week with just 2 .4 at halftime . Although Rohan Aujard had little influence on the game Bruce Phillips continued his good work in front of goals and Liam McDonnell made the last quarter his own and finished with four goals . Expect the likes of David Connell an d Matt Armstrong to try and whisk the ball out of the backline and run the ball . Tom Wilson has had an outstanding season in the ruck for Scotch and will be an integral part of the Cardinals plans again today . Simon Meehan's shifting of Mark Seccull into the ruck late in the game against Collegians showed the Bloods' versatility in that department in dual guns Hilton and Seccull . Both have had good seasons, too, the latter polling well in Monday night's count. Two weeks ago the Bloods turned a daunting three-quarter time deficit not a euphoric victory and they can only be strengthened by the win and the week's rest that came with it . Scotch on the other hand, come off a loss in a physical encounter with Xavs on a day when a number of players were down on form. Will they hit their straps today? Tipping has become a veritable nightmare - as I was reminded in no uncertain terms by various club identities on Mcnday night - but I can assure punters that I don't hate your club and I certainly don't base my selections on any religious preference! Having said that, Old Haileybury supporters will understand that I simply cannot board the bandwagon at this late date (I'd hate to ruin a good thing), as much as I think the Bloods might just be a good thing today . Cardinals by 9 points in a thriller .

Tith the weather again superb, the second semifinal saw Old Brighton assert early ascendanc y before allowing MHSOB back into the game . Despite the frghtback Old Brighton surged late in the third quarter to take control again and run away to a 32 point victory.
This was a very polished performance by Old Brighton who thoroughly deserved the victory and the reward of promotion to A Section ir 1998.
REVIEW Ladder leaders Old Brighton started well wit h Bradley goalling early followed by three goals that allowed them to dictate terms . Williams in the back pocket was a stumbling block for MHSOB whilst Fitzgerald back from a four week holiday stint shut down many promising MHSOB attacks . The second quarter was a hard slog by both sides with the ball being played wide for most of the quarter. MHSOB's big forwards in Johns and Woodley were involved in very keen struggles whilst Pertzel an d Helmot worked hard at ground level to get MHSOB back into the contest. A 27 point lead by Old Brighton early in the quarter had been reduced to a margin of 12 points at half time with MHSOB taking the break with some confidence and optimism about its' chances in the second half. Warren Fa ll revved up his charges for a third quarter effort and with Bruce an d Cassell on top kicked three early goals to race to a six point lead at the 15 minute mark . Then the Old Brighton engine room of Reid, Perry, Dennis an d Farrel turned the game around resulting in 7 goals in 15 minutes to give OBFC a handy break of 38 points at the last change . Old Brighton took charge early in the last stanza with a goal from Kent to give it an unassailable lead . Dale Tapping's players appeared to relax a little as MHSOB made one last effort but to no avail .

encounter between keen rivals in N HSOB and St Kevins . The week's break will have benefited th SKOBS while MHSOB will be keen to take on las year's C Section premiers and stop the SKOBS advanc to A Section. Both clubs have had superb years but a will be lost if victory does not come today . MHSOI scored well in the last encounter at Righetti Oval an, will rely on its strong ball brigade and powerful key for wards to win the day . SKOBS' height and ability to se up play from defence will worry MHSOB in a matc, that is seen as an even ball game. I am forced to tos the coin . MHSOB, heads - SKOBS, tails . Up goes th penny. Tails it is. SKOBS by 8 points . RESERVES Last week's cliff hanger saw Ormond lead all da and thoroughly earned its place in next week's Gran Final. SKOBS chased hard all day, did not use the ba too well but were beaten by a better side on the da~ Today Old Brighton an d St . C SECTION by Russell Goul d
ongratirlations to St Bedes Mentone skipper ony Macgeorge who on Monday night was awarded the title of 'C' section Best & Fairest playe r for season 1997 . Tony amassed a staggering 36 votes to be eleven clear of his nearest rival, North Old Boy's Luke Boyle who himself did get enough to win the award in any other section . It was a big night for Tony as he was also awarded the trophy for the leading goalkicker in 'C' Section, finishing the home and away season with 101 goals, again a total bettered by no-one in Amateur football this year. But as he said to me, he would have given it all up if he had of kicked one goal last Saturday, the goal that could have changed the result of the preliminary final between St Bedes Mentone and Marcellin at Sandringham. REVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL : ST BEDES MENTONE V. MARCELLIN It was a game that was always going to be close . The results from their two encounters during the season were split one a piece, and neither was a blowout of any proportions . The Tigers were backing up from a difficult loss to North Old Boys the week before, Marcellin rested after a weeks break . And it was the boys who had the break that were slow out of the blocks . The Tigers kept going . Lalor an d Kinsella were firing and they helped the Tigers to a 7 goal first quarter, the Eagles hanging in there with 3 of their own . The Eagles then settled into the second term . The Tigers slowed a bit and let Marcellin back in, the Eagles kicking 4 goals to the Tigers one to be level at the long break . The third quarter was also the Eagle's, although they didn't have it all their own way. They worked hard and were rewarded with 6 goals, but the Tigers were not to be discounted, and they put on four of their own and in peppering the goals late added 6 behinds to be just 8 points down at the final change, but pushing into a breeze . The last quarter was a dour struggle, but the Eagle's Karavalis, who had kicked crucial goals in Marcellin's win over Old Mentonians, was again proving elusive, and he, along with the otherwise quiet Treganowan, kicked goals and the Eagles had gotten out to a 19 point lead with not long to go . The crowd had gone silent but the Tigers were not finished . Adam Thompson managed to clear the ball again and scrambled through a goal and a behind to be just a kick down . With little time to spare the Tigers pushed forward again, Marcellin scrambling but unable to stop the push . The Tiger's captain then marked a pass just inside 50, but close to the boundary, and the siren went . With fans wailing in his ears the Tigers skipper pushed the kick wide and the Eagles had progressed to the Grand Final, and 'B' Grade by 6 points after an absolutely action packed Preliminary Final.
RESERVES PRELIMINARY FINAL: ST. BEDES MENTONE V. MONASH BLUES This game a game not so much like the seniors . Th Tigers got the early break, but Monash, a proven final team got back into the game to be just 1 point down a the long break . But the second half saw the Tigers per forms, in patches, in a way that resembled the forr that saw them unbeaten during the season . Monasl tried, but were no match for the Tiger running gam that saw them link well out of defence and convert u forward . The Tigers took over in the second half, partic ularly the third term ; an d got the win by 28 point: earning them a re-match with North Old Boys in thi weeks Grand Final. GRAND FINAL PREVIEW NORTH OLD BO'i'S V. MARCELLIN Unfortunately for most 'C Section fans, I do nc foresee this as, being too close a contest . Not suggestin that it will be an entirely one sided affair, but I feel th-~ North Old Boys will prove too strong for Marcellir North's running game will be well suited to the expan, es of Elsternwick Park, and their ability to kick goal has been proven throughout the year. Marcellin are a side that also'rely heavily on brigade of running players, a lot of their drive comin from a very solid defensive line that is able to push th ball, and themselves forward to create scoring opporth nities . They gave the Tigers a start last week and wei able to come back, but they cannot afford to do tr same thing against NOB's . In the wash up, I think North's ability to take over game through running and being extremely hard at it ball will prove too much for Marcellin to handle. Nort to win by up to 30 points. Good luck to both clubs i 'B' Section next year. RESERVES GRAND FINAL NORTH OLD BOYS V . ST. BEDES MENTONE TIGER These two teams faced off two weeks ago, and tl NOB's inflicted the Tigers first loss for the year. It w~ a very physical encounter, neither sides wanting to gii an inch, but in the end, North were better able to coi vert scoring opportunities and got the win . But it Tigers managed to turn things around last week ar showed glimpses of form that could win them a fla They were the yardstick all year . and it is a very hai ask ~o go through an entire season undefeated and w a flag. North will be ready to make it a great day for the club, but the Tigers will arrive and spoil the party .
The Tigers now know how to win and should tal the game, and the flag by around 2 goals . THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 19

D SECTION by Peter Kelly & David Cook `D' SECTION GRAND FINAL Good Luck to all players selected to represent your Clubs in Beauma ris and Old Geelong who have been promoted to 'C' Section in 1998, and will meet in today's Grand Final . Your clubs are justifiably proud of your achievements and that you have done your job and gained promotion for the Club . Today is the day for players. To the 42 who will take the field today to compete for the season's trophy, you have earned your place in the respective sides . It is the culmination of that pre-season training in 40 degrees and the winter nights of 4 degrees . To those injured or omitted the hard decisions had to be made and what is thought to be the best for the team has been decided. To the two coaches Brett Marchant and Mark Neeld congratulations on your efforts and best wishes for today's result . The Whitefriars club will be bitterly disappointed after all three teams finished the season third . REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS PRELIMINARY FINAL . Rese rve s
The Reserves match played between Whitefri ars and Parkside was a hard fought game with a very even first quarter whilst both sides adapted to the ground and conditions. Parkside were first to score but by quarter time the two teams were locked together at 3 .2 each . In the 2nd quarter Parkside attacked repeatedly and were repelled by the Friars' Johnson as he played a lone hand across the half back line . Caray playing at centre half back for Parkside then turned it on and blitzed for the rest of the day as he long bombed into the forward arc where Stuart and Dunabin teamed well to kick goals . In the third quarter the Devils nearly threw the game away with undisciplined late tackles and 25 metre penalties . They then settled to have a comfortable lead going into the last . In the conditions it was obvious fitness would play a big part in the result . The Friars goaled within two minutes of the start of the last quarter and with one minute to go were within 3 points but Parkside dug deep into their reserves and managed to hold on for a hard fought victory . Seniors In the Senior game a very fast game saw neither side able to get their game plan into action as every player was committed to the task . At the break OGS had wasted many opportunities and only led by 6 points . In 7 minutes of playing time OGS kicked 6 goals as they went on a rampage . Goals to Wiffen, Edmonds, Howells (2) Darcy and Neeld and it looked like OGS by how far . The Friars at half time trailed by 33 points . After the long break the Friars came out running and kicked the first two goals and during the quarter clawed their way back to trail by
only 15 pts at the last change. The last quarter wa to see OGS finish with 17 men as a reported player iu the third was off for the rest of the game and it wa one of wasted opportunities and went like this . 1611 hrs ball bounced, 1614 Howells (OGS) missed se shot, 1615 Ronchi (OGS) missed open goal, 1611 Whitefriars forced behind but free kick for throw an set shot missed by OGS . 1617 Howells missed se shot, 1621 Neeld missed set shot, 162 ; Vandenboom (WF) missed set shot . At the 13 minut mark a goal finally broke the drought for OGS an who then missed two more of the easiest of goal : Whitefriars then kicked the next three until Neel, kicked a team lifting goal which saw the next thre kicked by OGS . Whitefrairs got one back and misse the last two shots to finish 4 goals down . PREVIEWS OF TODAY'S GAMES. Seniors Old Geelong now meet Beaumaris again today fc the fourth time this season . In what will be a ver high standard and fast game neither side will be abl to afford to give the other a break. In the second-sen final nothing separated the sides for three quarter until OGS went to sleep as Beaumaris turned it on i the last to run out comfortable winners . The Sha rwilbewlawrethaOGSwilnotrelaxinths e : last chance for glory . OGS last week proved they ca play great team football and if they reproduce that ft four quarters the Sharks will be hard pressed to sta in touch. Beaumaris have had what some term a lu) ury of a weeks rest and most were there watchin OGS last week . This week will be harder than the set ond-semi but I think Beaumaris will get up by 2 goal in an extremely close game . Reserv es In the Reserves Parkside have forced their we into the Grand Final against Old Geelong aft( accounting for Old Essendon by a point in the First Final and Whitefriars by 3 pts last weekend . They wi meet an Old Geelong unit who easily accounted ft Whitefriars in the second -semi final . Old Geelon should take this out with injuries and fitness being problem for the Devils . The Season in Revie w PART 2 OF THE 97 REVIEW . Reviewing the performance of teams in D Sectie contirues this week . Old Essendon - just couldn't produce enoug consistent form away from home but did well conso idating in D Section. With their present players an TI-IF AMATFI IR FfX1TRAl I PR I 9
Reserves depth they should finish in the top half again next season. (Rating 80% ) Parkside - Finished off the season on top of the world after winning five from five to grab fourth spot . Fitness is their only problem and a little too much reliance on six senior players to perform consistently each week . Senior players need to be more committed to the task and although just missed winning the first-semi final would have struggled in better conditions to get closer to the top three . With two of these sides gone for next season if they can lift fitness and recruit as well as this season will be a force next year and will finish in the final five . (Rating 84%) Whitefri ars - Should finish top next season . Plenty of depth Seniors, Reserves and Under 19's all just missing a grand final berth . They will shake off this years disappointment and will be the measuring stick next year. (Rating 90% ) Old Geelong an d Beaumaris meet today and will play C Section football next year - deservedly as both produced the goods this season . Beaumaris who I predict will win earn 99% rating whilst OGS receive 97% . To the scribes and personalities at each club that have made me welcome and with whom I have enjoyed a quiet beer - well done and thanks for your assistance . To the respective Presidents, Peter Clarke ( Old Geelong) and Ron Nicholson (Beaumaris) and the Committee's of each competing club good luck today and well done . All the best in C Section next season .

E EAST SECTION by Barry Hicke y
Knitwear E East in its brief history has been a top notch competition, and has produced three first class premiers, St Leo's Emmaus Wattle Park, Aquinas and now Yarra Va lley Old Boys. Many club bonds and personal friendships have been forged in that time, which will, hopefully, endure much longer than the Section itself. Whatever the future holds though, as the clubs are regrouped for 1998, none of us who were in it, will ever forget our days as E Easteners . Congratulations to Nick Vasilopoulos of Old Carey on winning the Section B & F. Nick's ability, dedication and loyalty are legendary in his club and this accolade caps of an excellent year for him personally . A very special thanks to our Editor, Ph il Stevens, and his hardworking unit at HQ, Sue Anderson, Brett Conne ll and Angela Giles, and the ubiquitous Peter Harris, all of whom have made this scribe's duties an absolute pleasure . Our thanks to Richard Evans, Tom Johnston an d Ian Munro our VAFA officials for this year's finals series . They were helpful as always, and calm . even when confronted with three different starting times for Grand Finals! Again, special plaudits to John Montgome ry of Old Scotch and his team, in particular Roz Speed and her kiosk crew, who all helped to make our last Grand Final such a memorable one . SENIOR GRAND FINAL Yarra Valley Old Boys triumphed over a gallant Kew after a truly great match in near perfect conditions at Camberwell. The Bush Rangers have been a force since their entry into the VAFA in 1993 because of the sheer weight of talent theY put on the field each week . Finalists in every year of E East competition . it took two top sides in St Leo's and Aquinas to deny Yarra in 95 & 96, but the 1997 season they have made their own . Coached superbly by David Kyle, and with a capable administration lead by Haydn Park and Rod Penaluna, the Bush Rangers will be worthy D Section contenders . Kew were magnificent in defeat, and a genuine credit to coach, Robert Bayley. an d And rew Barn es an d his committee . Kicking to the scoreboard, and traditionally, scoring end . Kew were in a spot of bother when they found it hard to penetrate the hard running Yarra back lines . Kew lead by only 5 points at the 17 minute mark, and were definite trouble in the last ten minutes, when McLeod and MeVean goaled to give Yarra an 8 point lead at the change . Michael White, Brad Peake, Michael Fung an d Fraser MeVean were all looking ominous, with Ang Gencarelli and Ric Pulverenti both strong for Kew . Peterson kicked a great goal from the boundary early in the second quarter . but then Kew rattled on 3 by Dimasi ( 2), and King (I). in 3 minutes to hit the front . The next 25 minutes saw 11 goals scored, 8 to the Bush Rangers . and 3 to Kew, with the ball racing
from one end of the ground to the other i n a super display of play I on football . McLeod, Thompson, Laing and Downs were all prominent fa, Yarra, while Harrison, Cullen an d Jamie Be ll wen likewise for Kew. The Bush Rangers were 29 points uI at the long break and looking confident . Kew's Chow 8 Cable Hope were effective in defensive roles .
A burst of goals to Porte, King and McMahon ir the opening 3 minutes of the 3rd saw Kew back in con tention . The pace was tremendous, and the skill wor thy of a much higher section . A magnificent goal on thi run from an acute angle by McVean steadied Yarra and he followed with another after marking 2 minute, later. Then Bria, . Harrison and Dimasi whacke( through 3 in as many minutes and the spectators' anx iety levels went off the chart again . Two more steadier from White and McVean, put Yarra back in the com fort zone, but Porte dobbed one from the square afte sensational mark just before the siren, cutting Kew ; deficit to 16 points at the last change . Yarra had promi nent players in Koenen, and Drew . For Kew, Brun and McMahon were giving plenty of drive, and Mart, Chapman was curbing the dangerous McLeod .
Four minutes into the last, Kew were two point up, followed great goals to Pulverenti, Lafranchi, am Po rt e . Once more though, the irrepressible MeVeaa goaled brilliantly on the run from 40 metres out, a . For the nex ntheBusRagrmovdinte 20 minutes Yarra absolutely dominated, scoring 6.6 t 0 .0, with Peake, MeVean, Downs and Scales runnin riot . A solitary response from that rocklike defendel Jamie Bell , was all that Kew could muster, and 2 min utes later, at 5.10pm, E East Section, as we hav known it, came to an end . Superimposed over the joy of victory, and the tears of defeat, was the overridin aura of a great competition being brought to a fittin close, by a match of epic proportions . In truth, the mane of the match is a plurality . th 42 players who participated . Nothing more could hav been asked of any of them. But using scribe's licencF I'd like to salute Fraser MeVean of Yarra, whose seem ingly effortless movement and abundance of skill : b ; ought such pleasure of E East patrons over the pa ; three years, culminating in his stellar contribution t his Grand Final. RESERVE GRAND FINAL
Old Carey salvaged something from the year b unexpectedly downing the red hot favourites . Yarr Valley, surviving a late onslaught from the Bus Rangers, who had been hitherto stunned by the ree oluteness of the C's defence . The scores at half timf showing the C's 7 .4 to 0 .3 . had even the Carey cam gasping in disbelief. Many people had forgotten the this game featured the Section's best Ressies attaci
Yarra, versus its best defence, and on the day, the defenders won in a very entertaining and high standard game . The Bush Rangers rattled home when O'Sullivan an d Telford broke loose, but the C's had enough margin to weather the 4th term revival . Potter at CHB was outstanding for Yarra, receiving terrific support from Ross, C rean, Lawton, Gentle an d Rowe. Chris Soccio, with his 50m dashes and 60m kicks was superb for the C's, Matt Curry was mercurial on his wing, Ian Cohen was unflagging all day ruck roving, Mal Kennedy had a great day in defence, M att Jones controlled the ruck duels, and the evergreen James McQuie, capped off a wonderful year with another fine display. A highly commendable team effort from the C's.

fabulous day for football and a fabulous game a with the cliche'd but undeniable reality being that neither side deserved to lose . Both sides went into the game with added motivation, Uni Blacks keen to erase the memory of their '96 fade out and North Brunswick intent on making amends for their '95 Grand Final loss at the hands of Uni Reds . The game opened at a frenetic pace as Black's runners set out to take advantage of the expansive Preston Community Oval and bypass North's strength that lay down the spine . The Northerners found it difficult to close down the spaces their opponents were creating and the loss of skipper Dean DeMorton for much of the quarter after a clash in the opening minutes was a low blow . A nervous start from both sides produced some inaccurate disposal with Blacks taking the early initiative before North eventually settled to finish out the quarter strongly and go into the break 11 points down . Blacks started the second with early goals and looked a chance to run away with the half before the momentum shifted . Midway through the term Tirchett marked from behind and goaled to give his side renewed hope and when Lynch played on and missed from twenty five metres the underdogs dug deep and took their chance . Two quick goals to @Paites and the ungainly "Plugger" Wernham reduced the margin to a kick before "Wizard" Warren snared the ball from a boundary throw in to boot the goal of the day and make it 3 in five minutes . Another major from Ellis put North two kicks clear and only a freak snap by Gullan late in the term allowed Blacks to be within 2 points at the main break . At the half Garry Connolly had plenty to think about with Joe Boudoloh proving a headache in the ruck and his defenders finding themselves working overtime for the first time in more than a month . In the visitors sheds Craig Fox had seen his charges storm home against Williamstown the week before and knew he was in with a big chance if only North could hold the students in the third as they kicked to what had been the scoring end all day. Blacks came out on fire but had to work hard for a lucky first goal . Poor kicking looked set to prove costly before Ben Henderson marked strongly and kicked truly from fifty out to provide a buffer . Just as Blacks looked set to break the game wide open, the hard working John "Kanga" Kennedy goaled against the flow of play to justify his inclusion in the North side . When Thorpe
goaled from forty North had come from nowhere to trail by just 2 points at " the final change . As he had done a week earlier, Coach Fox called on Adrian Tirchett to lift and take advantage of the seeds of doubt he felt his side had planted in the minds of their more fancied opponents, while Connolly used his three quarter time address to settle his boys and insist they use their greater speed to advantage . The final term was a desperate arm wrestle. After eight minutes North had managed only 2 points but that was enough to level scores as the tension built on and off the field . As the clock ticked passed 10 minutes Roberts took a screamer twenty five metres out for Blacks but missed . Henderson marked the kick in and passed to Lynch who also missed . Just as Blacks looked set to kick themselves out of the game a snap from a throw in stretched their lead beyond a kick . A quick reply from Tirchett who marked strongly on forty meters had everyone on the edge of their seats (even though most of the crowd were standing) and when he marked in a similar position just four minutes later Blacks looked to be in deeF trouble . The long kick missed and the scores were again tied . As the quarter stretched on play ebbed and flowed between the two half forward lines as both sides fought desperately to break the dead• lock . The game ticked into time on and Henderson marked on the point post for Blacks but the unsighted umpire refused to make a guess a . The resulting throw in fell nrightlycaedpo t c Rob Mackie who handballed through for the point that broke the deadlock and gave an exhausted Blacks the game and their first Flag since 1974 . Reserves
Earlier Blacks made it a six pack of ressies pre• mierships with Souerby strong in the ruck and Brown, Dooley Sc Jessen damaging around the packs . Underdogs Uni Reds had worked hard ir the first half and developed some momentum intc the main break to be a real chance . But after . tight start, Blacks ran away with the second hal and were even able to bring on Nick Carah as the} over ran the Reds across every line except the for wards where the trio of Evans, Senberg anc Atkins were superb in the last lin e Congratulations to the Premiers . to Best a nFairestwnAaroThegfmVdilastow r and Sharpshooter David Wallace of Uni High . T
ast Saturday dispelled any doubts that th e Southbank Football Club was truly'Premiers' an d 'Champions' of Section E South for 1997 . As a club, to win 40 of 41 games was a magnificent performance of endurance, strength and great resolve and indicative of the depth within the ranks of the club. Accolades are many and it is difficult to find a start point, however without 'Punch' there's no show, hence the players are to be congratulated along with the many, many helpers around the club who get little if any praise throughout the season . To the Match Committee and general committee of the club the 'Flag(s)' are just rewards for hard yakka and for never losing sight of their vision and goals. Commiserations are extended to the St Patricks Mentone Football Club as the vanquished . Their performance throughout 1997 was extremely commendable. As much as the Bankers were dominant, so too were the Vultures over the remainder of the competition. They too as a club are focussed on success and conduct the operations of the club and all facets with it, in a most professional manner. The St Pat's club is most definitely headed in the right direction. REVIEW OF GRAND FINAL SENIORS
On what could only be described as a perfect day for footy the stage was set for a classic encounter . As had been mentioned previously by both Tom and myself, the Bankers needed to be wary of any early on-slaught by the Patters . Well . the reverse was true, although Southbank took a little while to settle . their 5 goal to 1 quarter just about had the game beyond St Pat's reach . The second quarter was uncompromising footy resembling at times an arm wrestle with each side trying to gain the ascendancy . The ball was free flowing between the respective half-forward zones with goals at a premium cost. Recognised gun players from each team were being quelled by fair and legitimate tagging roles and the coaches of both outfits reacted by switching these players around in an attempt to get them into the action of things . The penultimate stanza was the clincher for Southbank . The move of Big Bad Roy to the goal square freeing up ace forward Craig Perry to roam free was the catalyst for the Bankers attacking spree . Spilled marks early in the game were not being clutched and converted with comparative ease and an absolute 'pearler' goal by Justin
Nugent took the wind out of the Patters sails . The centre square contests were now favouring Southbank and the scoring opportunities increased . On the other hand, St Pat's when they did go forward were frustrated by an extremely tight defence. Again, like the second quarter, the 5 minutes belonged to St Pat's and they rallied with the last 2 goals, however they still faced the daunting task of kicking 7 majors to head the Bankers . In the last, when most on-lookers thought the Patters might fall away they fooled everyone and played some of their best football of the day. By kicking the 1st couple, the heat to a degree was turned up on Southbank. The Bankers steadied and answered each and every goal from thereon and if not for one of the funniest goal mouth incidents witnessed for sometime (Tony - see, I've got it, now I haven't - Rolls) they in fact would have squared the ledger. As it was, the Patters outscored Southbank by a goal but still and all, fell short of the mark by 34 points . SUMMARY OF E SOUTH CLUBS PERFORMANCES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS .
Southbank and St Pats - Enough said, both up to D and will acquit themselves well . Peninsula - Bowed in finals again, but in very good hands and will prosper in '98 . Power House - Specific off season recruiting and a good pre-season will see them high again in '98 . Oakleigh - Good end to season and with reasonable depth will be thereabouts next year . Glenhuntly - Consolidated well enough and i1 they top-up their stocks will test the best next season . St Mary's - Disappointing end to the season . Must build up depth within to trouble the t . oteams Elsternwick - Mid year strife no help . Too mu . 'F' a help, but need to recruit heavicleftow ly . Monash Gryphons - Better than finish positior indicates . Will give 'F' a bit of 'curry'. ANZ Albert Park - Copped it for a fair while now. Will need to dip deep even in 'F' but good luck OUR THANKS TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTEE THIS YEAR - See va. Tom & Ken .

UMPIRES CORNER by Leah Gallagher and Peter Simpso n
PROMOTIONS Congratulations to the following clubs who have been successful in obtaining promotion for 1998 : Old Brighton (A), North Old Boys and Marcellin (B), Beaumaris and Old Geelong (C), Yarra Valley, University Blacks and Southbank (D) . Either MHSOB or St Kevins will join Old Brighton in A Section after this weekend . Good luck to both clubs . APPOINTMENTS Congratulations to all Field, Boundary and Goal Umpires who were appointed to Grand Finals last weekend. Umpires' Corner is sure you did the VAFAUA proud. Good luck to others still to do their 'GF' over these next two weekends. Special mention to fellow columnist, Leah 'Spider' Gallagher, on doing both the E Reserves Grand Final and your 200th game last weekend . The spies tell me you did us proud, umpiring with 'Gorgeous' George Gioras who heads off overseas shortly. Well done Spider. BIG DAY AT MORDIALLO C
At the same ground, umpire's friend from Southbank Neil 'Bubba' Wallmeyer had a big day coaching the Magoo's to the flag, then playing for the ones in their premiership team . Well done 'Bubba. Apparently many Grand Final umpires were seen late in the Yarra Park vicinity enjoying the VAFA sponsor's product . The same Grand Final at Mordialloc saw something unusual . In the Ressies, Spider and George bounced all game on the hard surface but something must have happened between games because Jerker an d Daggles had to throw the ball up in the seniors . Must have been a very local shower out south during the afternoon. Umpires . like the players can be either happy or disappointed by their respective selections, particularly at this time of the year. However the umpires out Riddell way obviously got more wound up than most . Apparently the previous Umpires' Advisor was 'bailed up' by a very unhappy field umpire who had missed out on the 'big one' and a new game called 'chair throwing was started on the same night . Makes Kenny Walker's audible seem docile doesn't it Lippy? BOUNCE OFF
The Shen-in 'Bounce Off' has reached the Semi
Finals . ~ Richard I 'Clint' Eastwood surprised by knocking off Graham 'Swaizy' Thwaites an d Kevin 'Chill i' Segota brought back memories oi his glory days as a field umpire by cleaning up Wayne 'Chuck' Hinton. 'Clint' and 'Chilli' meet in the Grand Final on Thursday night . Result in next weekend's Umpires' Corner. Special thanks to Mark 'Bushy' Bushfield . VAFA VOTE COUNT Next week's Corner may provide a report from Spider on the prestigious VAFA Vote Count Night last Monday. We will have to wait to see if any Downlow awards have to be handed out . Congratulations to a ll Best & Fairest award winners, we ll deserved . Details can be found elsewhere in this edition of the Amateur Footballer . Great night and congratulations to the VAFA Administration for putting it together so well . SOCIAL NOTES Coming events include the 'A' Grade Grand Final BBQ spit on 21 September at Elsternwick and the end of year Dinner Dance on 26 September at Tudor Receptions. We won't mention the end of year trip to Tasmania okay. LAW OF THE WEEK (6 .6 Kick after siren) .
Umpires' Corner would especially like to include this law due to personal involvement in recent times . It doesn't happen often but when it does, like the good scout, be prepared. 6.6 .1 In the event that two or more field umpires are officiating, the ball shall be deemed dead when one of the field umpires hears the first sound of the siren . That field umpire shall be the sole judge of whether the ball has been kicked or handled or whether a free kick has been awarded prior to the first sound of the siren . 6 .6 .2 If the ball is touched in transit the field umpire must be satisfied that the score was not assisted by another player, but if the ball touches any player below the knee it shall become dead and no score recorded . U19 SECTION by Brett Connel l
The Grand Finals are upon us Review - Pre liminary Finals Section 1 FFNie weather and the ground condition at Ted Ajani was immaculate as the Old Xaverians took on Ol d Paradians for the right to challenge Uni . Blues in the Section 1 Grand Final of 1997. In an even first quarter both side's defences held sway and the OP's held a slender (11) point advantage . The Xavs really turned up the heat in the second booting (7) goals while holding the OP's scoreless . The match looked like heading towards a big win for the Xavs, but the OP's had other ideas . With Ciavola and Gale up forward finding the mark and Talarico, Stevens, Villanti and Green holding sway the OP's booted an amazing (13) second half goals to (7) to crush any thoughts the Xavs may have had of defending their Section 1 title. The Xavs were best served by Fleming, Webb and Healy, with Jones, Di llon an d Deane-Johns outstanding workers all day . From all accounts a fantastic game of football and a shame that there had to be a loser. Section 2 Whitefriars were jumped early by a fired up Old Scotch team who led by the healthy margin of (20) points at quarter time . No rt hey an d Winterburn were prominent for the Friars, as to were Gross and Love for the Scotchies . The Friars hit back in the second term through the assistan ce of Phan, Reid an d Murray, but the Scotchies were equal to the task with Crow, Crane an d Davis leading from the front. The goalless third term by the Friars put them well behind the eight ball and despite the efforts of Johnson, they struggled to contain a rampant Old Scotch brilliantly led by Junkeer. In the final analysis it was the better (4) quarter performance by the Scotchies that saw them advance to the Grand Final against Collegians today. Section (2) Blue Ormond had to battle very hard all day to wear down a determined AJAX outfit . The Jackas opened the better and attacked the football with much aggression and determination . A feature of their play was the field kicking and teamwork, and with Bock, Dukes and Snow leading the way early the Jackas looked in for an upset . Leading by (23) points at half time with Golvin and Czarny causing problems up forward the Jackas had every right to feel confident, however the Monds would not lay down and through the efforts of Wonnacott, Dale and Gleeson kept in touch throughout the third when the Jackas threatened to go away with the game. Having narrowed the deficit down to (8) points at the final change the Monds gathered
resources and came home like a train, had they kicked straight the match could well have been sealed a lot earlier, but the efforts of Naughton, Thompson, Robbins and Black instrumental in the wash-up . For the valiant Jackas Segal, Weinstock and Blashki were excellent (4) quarter performers . Section (2) Red St. Leos Emmaus contiued their giant killing form when they soundly defeated Yarra Valley last weekend. A fast and furious first quarter saw the Two Blues slam on (6) majors to (1) to hold all the aces at quarter time with Gashen, Hodder and Willis doing as they pleased . Thompson and S . Lloyd were prominent for the Valley but were battling against the odds early on, with the trend set to continue . The Valley were destined to play catch-up football for the remainder of the day with the Two Blues adding to their lead at every change during the match . For the Valley none tried harder th an Coleman, A . Laing, B . Reynolds an d T. Wapshot, while the Two Blues were best served by Thomas, Devlin and Manton . Yan•a Valley will be left to lament on what could have been, but have proved in only their second year of U19 football that they have a sound basis for the years ahead . Previews - Grand Finals Section 1 Uni. Blues enter today's Section i Grand Final with the knowledge that they have defeated Old Paradians on both occasions this year. The first time by the slender margin of (3) points, while the second time around the OP's were comfortably defeated. The OP's have come through from fourth position and have key players in Talarico, Ventura, Ciavola an d Stevens to be wary of . Add to this Cosgriff, Lynch, Port eous, Vecchio and Joyce and the Blues will definitely have their hands full . The Blues on the other hand have their own match winners in Roydhouse, Kordick, Sturrock and Fricker, added to this list are prime movers in Eastaugh, Cobbledick, Kelly, Christie an d Camm and this match will be well worth viewing . Both teams have solid defences and attacking mid-fielders, with enough firepower up forward to boot a winning score . The close tough game last week may well take its toll on the OP's and this is my reasoning in leaning towards Uni . Blues to win a tight match . Selection: Uni . Blues Section 2 The score between both Co llegians an d Old
Scotch stands at (1) win apiece and with the teams having not met in the finals to date today's match should be beauty. Both sides can kick big scores on their day, and although both have desperate defences the Lions' would appear to be better overall . The Scotchies will rely heavily on Hawkins, Beattie, Gross and Crane . with handy back-ups in Junketer, Crow, Prendergast and Love. While the Lions have been solid all year with the likes of Baxter, Van Der Venne, Byrne and Florentine consistently prominent. Add to this talented group Champion, Byrne, Moon an d Moll ard and the equation is a rather exciting affair . With (1) win each and not much more than good form from both over the finals this match will no doubt be close. My leaning is with the Lions given the week off, however the Scotchies have hit form at the business end and will obviously keen to prove this prediction wrong. All the best to the two teams today . Selection: Collegians Section ( 2) Blue Ormond face a rested and ready-to-go St . Bedes Mentone Tigers for the fourth time in 1997, and still are yet to break the ice . Key players in Ryan and Kingwell will need to be watched by the Moods, as to will Wintle, Gangi, Falkingham, Kidd and McShane. The Monds will need to start well and maintain maximum pressure on the Tigers whose skill and precision team work make them firm premiership favourites . While the Moods have gained a berth in the Grand Final, they have done it he hard way with key contributors being Ashford, Naughton, Cu llen, Robbins an d Gale. For the Monds to win today Black and Brown will need to be prominent as to will Byron, Gleeson, Pasara and Wonnacott. The Tigers goalkicking power may trouble the Moods however I expect a closer match than last time the two teams met . With the Tigers holding the edge in all encounters to date the Moods have nothing to lose, and given fine conditions the match will be a tough and uncompromising encounter from go to whoa . The Tigers deserve to start favourites, although no favourite is a sure thing. Selection: Ormon d Section (2) Re d St . Leos Emmaus WP have emerged as the only remaining threat to Old Trinity's flag dream. The last time the two teams met it was the Two Blues comfortably, and back in Round 1 the OTs walloped the Two Blues easily. So at best the most recent match points to a strong turnaround by the Two Blues, and with the likes of Devlin, Willis, Mo re l, Thomas an d McGloin finding form at the right end of the season signs are ominous. However the OT's must and will start favourites with Gre ig, Newman, Arrowsmith an d Jones all quality players capable of match winning performances if left unchecked . Add to this talented group Ramsden, Kennedy and Andrews and the balance definitely swings towards the OT's. Overall the OT's have a better defence, with both teams fairly even in terms of forwards and onballers . The match will come down to whichever team settles first and I lea n 速 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997
towards the OT's being the better prepared fo occasion today . Selection: Old Trinity All the very best to all (8) teams playing today may the best teams on the day win, and I trust thal some fine football is produced in the process. Gooc luck to all concerned.

COACHES'CLIPE' AFCA/VAFA
0 ne of the most challenging aspects of coaching an amateur football club is the development of the future of the club . In football clubs where the participants are involved for many reasons, a coach and the club committee are responsible for creating an environment where the future of the club can be guaranteed . There are two major are as that a coach/club can use in order to guarantee its future . In simple terms these may be listed as: 1) player recruitment and on-field success, and 2) player development. If we look at each of these aspects we may see that they have characteristics that could "make or break" a club . 1) Player recruitment and on-field success This is certainly an immensely important aspect of any coaches position . Coaches are expected to recruit senior players that will have an immediate effect on the on-field performance of the team. The recruitment of quality people is just as important as the recruitment of good footballers. We all know of examples where clubs have recruited heavily, achieved some short term success only to find that the "recruits" moved on to another club the following year and leave the club "high and dry" . In the main clubs need to recruit good footballers who will also become good, loyal clubmen . Amateur football , in that regard, is probably the last bastion of club loyalty that exists in today's dollar driven society. 2) Player developmen t This can take on many forms including skill development, social development and leadership development . Skill development requires no explanation. however social and leadership development of players are also integral aspect of a coaches role . Many coaches will tell you that they are often the players' confidantes, mothers, fathers . psychologists and nearly any profession that deals with the mind! In that respect, coaches often have a large impact on some of their players' social development and it is responsibility that is not taken lightly. Leadership development can be a neglected component of a coaches/clubs' plan . However, following a few simple principles can overcome any oversights. As a coach you could make recommendations to your committee regarding young players (or those players with leadership qualities) to go to a Level 1 Coaches Course . This will benefit both the coach and the club in many ways . Firstly. the coach will have more people
around him who understand what he is trying to do. The coach can confidently break up training by utilising one of these players to run a drill or even a whole session (It's amazing how some people respond to responsibility) . This can also ensure that players don't get sick of hearing the coaches' voice. A coach may also select one or a group of players to be responsible for warm-ups and cool downs throughout the whole year . The fact that they will have completed a coaching course will enable the coach to be confident in their ability to do this task properly . The players themselves will learn invaluable skills such as public speaking and group control which may come in handy in other aspects of their lives . Involving players in key leadership roles at training will also develop a sense of ownership of training sessions and game plans etc . As a senior coach I am first to admit that I don't know everything about football, and it is amazing what valuable suggestions can come from your players if you create an environment whereby they are encouraged to bring forward their ideas . The benefits of sending players to Level 1 Coaches Courses are magnified if your club has limited resources, particularly those working in an off-field capacity. Players who complete a coaches course will ensure that the club will have "home grown" talent for future coaching positions, particularly the Reserves/ Assistant coach position which is often difficult to fill in the lower grades. This can be an important element with respect to the new coach knowing the pysche of an amateur football club . Also, clubs will have "money in the bank" should outside influences cause a coach to have to leave the club . By providing players with coaching experiences, players who may have only slightly held an intention to coach in the future may find that it is much more suited to them than they thought . As a playing coach I can assure you that I have learnt more about playing through being a coach than I ever thought possible . Even if your players don't go on to become coaches, you may find that exposure to a Level 1 Coaches Course could improve their on-field performance . In short I can only encourage coaches to recommend to your committee that some of your players be sent to a Level 1 Coaches Course . The cost is minimal compared to the investment that your club will be making for it's future ! Ga ry Ryan Senior Coach, Monash Gryphons
