David Burnes looks back at the season finishing this weekend . . . ood afternoon to all followers of the VAFA in what will Qc}Imost likely be my last piece of writing as President of the VAFA. I take this opportunity to thank all the players, officials and supporters from all clubs for the support they have given me over the past five years . The network of friends that develops between followers of Amateur football never ceases to amaze me . The number of occasions where one comes across people who follow the VAFA is a source of constant surprise . Both in business as in social circles the VAFA network is indeed vast. My years as Chairman of the Executive and later as President have been made infinitely more enjoyable, and for that matter memorable, due to the wonderful support I have received from Phil Stevens, Sue Anderson and in the last few years from Brett Connell - and also in the short time from Angela Giles . Phil's team is extremely dedicated and whoever takes over from me will discover they have a wonderful back-up Administrative team . My only regret in leaving this position has been a failure during my term to breakdown the "them and us" attitude that permeates many clubs with regards to the Executive Committee . The Executive is made up of thirteen gentlemen, all of whom have long club backgrounds, who see the Executive as the next step in supporting the VAFA . The fact that they are elected to the VAFA does not immediately mean that they become anti the clubs - quite the contrary - each member in his own way is on the Executive to support the interests of all clubs . Moving to this weekend's games. On Saturday Old Brighton take on the rising star of the Association St . Kevins . In 1994 St . Kevins was playing in D section - in 1998 they will be playing in A section. My heartiest congratulations to all at St .Kevins for what they have achieved in such a short time . I hope that I am not "kiss of death" as I tip St. Kevins. Two great rivals meet on Sunday in what should be a last man standing affair. These two sided have never met in an A section Grand Final despite the fact that they have been in the VAFA in excess of seventy years . In 1980 they met in the B section final and the result was a two point win to the Old Xavs . They are clearly the top two sides, with their reserves playing in the early game also. For no other reason than the fact that I was once the President of Old Xaverians I tip them to win. I am sure that it will be a great game of football and a fitting finale to a wonderful season .

THE AMATEUR

1967 Carnival ~ Reunion a grea t success Last Sunday sixt y

guests enjoyed themselves over lunch as twenty members of the successful 1967 VAFA Carnival team were present to be honored by the VAFA. Seven members came fro m afar to be present - coach Frank Dunin (Perth), Spence Williams (Bundaberg), Laurie Prosser (Smythes Creek) Ian Wood (Ancona), Bill Sykes (Benalla),Gary Crouch (Bendigo) and Graeme McLean (Wahgunyah) . Captain John Fisher and player David Hughes both gave stirring reminisces of the trip to Launceston thirty years ago . Other players not mentioned above who were present included Geoff Carter, Ed Murphy, Phil Parkes, Julian Nance, Lionel Smith, Geoff Ward, David Williams and Chris Roach . Trainers Clarrie Thompson and Jack Dugdale completed the 1967 group . The team won all three games in 1967 including the closest call ever against Tasmania and a record winning margin against South Australia . An impressive list of eight players and coach f rom this team went on to play VFL (AFL) football - Frank Dunin (Richmond), Gary Crouch (Essendon), John Fisher (Hawthorn), Graeme McLean (St .Kilda), Ed Murphy (Richmond), Pat Patterson (Geelong), Rod Payne (Melbourne), Bill Sykes (Fitzroy) and Geoff Ward (St.Kilda). A great day was had by all . On behalf of the Executive, convenor Ian Munro is thanked for all his work and planning which made the day such a success .

The final word. . . . . Thanks to every person who has offered their support to me this season. Especially to David Burnes, who says he is finishing as President, I thank you for your friendship, wonderful leadership and willingness to always be there . To the best team in the VAFA - my administration team - Sue. Brett and Angela. supported by Cliff, Mavis, Nancy, Agate, supergroundsmen Michael and George, Michael Sneddon and his helpers, all at Cyan Press (Printers to the VAFA) for meeting all of the VAFA's demanding requirements and everyone who assists my team in any way large or small, thank you for contributing to make the VAFA such a well respected organisation . See you all next year - my tips for this weekend • St . Kevins and Old Xaverians .

loomv Elsternwick Park provided a unique footgalling picture last Sunday a little after 4pm as the siren rang for three-quarter time . Most of the large crowd converged on the oval as the rain teemed down, creating two large circular huddles around each of the Scotch and Haileybury camps, umbrellas shielding players and supporters from the rain . With a spot in the grand final at stake, with thirty minutes left to play, there was an incredible intensity in those huddles - players keen to get back out and finish the game, spectators anxious for the wait to be over and next week's spot assured . The essence of September football. One interested spectator who didn't get wet was Nick Bourke - the Xaverians coach remained sheltered on the pavilion balcony where he contemplated the impact a tough hard slog in the wet would have on his side's opponent in today's premiership battle . And make no mistake the game was a tough hard slog as both the Cardinals and the Bloods showed a preparedness to do the hard things . Like Mark Seccull . The Bloods big man threw himself into everything last weekend, running hard and launching his large frame into an aerial contest . His efforts kept Haileybury's hopes alive for some time, but ultimately, he could only do so much . David Connell and Gary Phillips both tried gallantly in defence - in the second term, particularly, they frustrated the Cardinals efforts to score despite Scotch having all of the play . With Grigg running well out of defence and Justin Hosking and Andrew Smith making play in the middle . the Cardinals repeatedly kicked the ball long into the forward line where B . Phillips, Heath and Aujard were all forced to earn their goals on hard-working Bloods defenders . Phillips had the better of his duel with D. Seccull and when he kicked his third just before the half-time bell . Scotch were well-poised with a 21 point lead in greasy conditions . The start of the third quarter was like an arm wrestle as each side struggled for ascendancy . Heath made it 27 points just after play resumed but the indomitable Wes Byrns replied quickly to show the Bloods would not go lying down . Rohan Price then booted a long raking goal midway through the term and Scotch were looking good 25 points clear. Seccull got one back and moments later Andrew Walden sent the Haileybury faithful into a frenzy with a long goal on the run to bring the Bloods within 13 points . Just at that moment a shudder must have run through the collective spine of the Scotch personnel and their supporters - at the ensuing centre bounce 32 of the 36 players on the field were forward of the centre towards the Bloods goal - momentum - and anything I

seemed possible when ~ -~ they received a free kick to send the ball forward again . Bu t then Kraus was knocked in the head, Seccull hit the post and Steve Collins slotted one through from the boundary line to show that it was to be the Cardinals day after all . Scotch emerged triumphant and relatively unscathed but one wonders what toll Sunday's slog will have on the hard-running legs of the likes of Smith, Hosking an d Goldberg . Preview Hosking in the first half and Smith throughou t the game showed a return to good form against the Bloods while Goldberg had, by this year's standards, a quieter afternoon : all three will have to be right on the mark today if they are to have the better of Wood, Dann, Ford and co . Xavs get much of their drive from the midfield, particularly the tireless Wood, and of course the efforts of ruckman and Woodrow Medal Winner Michael Blood. Blood alreadv has one Jock Nelson medal for B .O .G . in the Grand Final ; he'd dearly love another today but its going to be tough going against Cardinals ruckman Tom Wilson . Wilson, like Blood, has had an excellent year and was again among the Cardinals best at the weekend, dropping back into space deep in his teams' defensive area, helping out the likes of Adam Nettleton and Jeremy Laird . The duo are going to need all the help they can get today as they battle Xavs dynamic double pronged attack in Matt Bourke and Dan Richardson. Either is capable of taking apart a side single-handedly : if they're both on song, look out Cardinals . Add to this combination the scoring potential of Tim Ockleshaw . John Bowen, Wood and Ford and Xavs look a good thing . Holmes, Brushfield, and Landrigan can stop the wind from getting through in the backline and rarely have a poor day : between them they will variously find themselves assigned to Phillips, Aujard and Heath . The trio provide Scotch with a variety of scoring options with either Goldberg or Hosking resting in the pocket to pick up crumbs and Xavs defenders could well have their work cut out for them if Scotch can find that extra polish and bring tne ball forward quickly. Ultimately, there is plenty of talent across the lines and from both teams, yet only one team can win . With both combatants playing out the Reserve grade premiership today, too, the loser of the main game may be consoled by a victory in the twos . But I think not . Nick Bourke and Xaverians to complete the fairytale that began midway through season 1996 . Old Xaverians by 31 points .

B SECTION by Terry Quirk

Gn a perfect day for football MHSOB and SKOBS journeyed to Sandringham for the all importan t preliminary final encounter with pre-season plans fo r both clubs in the balance . This appeared to be a very even match up with both camps declaring most definitely their confidence of living to fight another day, that day of course being today against Old Brighton in the all important Grand Final. St Kevin's came out on top last week by 29 points after the lead see-sawed for three and a half quarters before St Kevin's, despite some inaccurate kicking drew clear. Of course a day of absolute tragedy for all involved at Melbourne High after much work commenced in September 1996 with the objective of firstly promotion, and secondly a flag in September. 1997 . The Hart Foundation certainly gave the impression of delirious celebrating after last weeks effort, but coach Tim Hart has everything back on track to ensure that SKOBS stay on course to ensure the ultimate goal is achieved . REVIEW As expected the preliminary final started at a

frantic pace with Melbourne High having more use of the ball against a slight breeze . The tagging of Marcus Dollman by Howard and with Fairchild and Grimmer checking Ryan and Gross closely, goals were not easy to come by . Several bruising clashes were a feature of this quarter as both sides tried to gain ascendancy at the centre bounces where MHSOB's McIntyre was working hard on Olive with both ruckmen giving the impression that heavy body contact was to be the order of the day . The second quarter was again tight with Dan Woodley earning every possession and a few goals against the determined 'Roo Boy' Marusic. whilst Kennedy and Farquharson manned up the dangerous Pertzel and Albergo . The loss of McIntyre during this quarter appeared a big glow for MHSOB but Webster took on the SKOBS tall timber in a lion hearted effort until the unexpected return of McIntyre after half time . The combatants returned to the battlefield, each with the intention of taking control during the 'premiership' quarter. Such was not the case as both sides went goal for goal with barely a kick in it at the last change . During this quarter Andrew Hart and Andrew McGuinness clashed heads causing the SKOB camp into changes that unsettled things as MHSOB through McCully, Johns, Cassel and Skinner tried to send their side into overdrive to gain a break before the last change . An early goal to MHSOB sent its supporters into a frenzy but SKOBS through Keighran and Bossong took, charge to drive the ball fonvard on numerous occasions and finally score enough majors to ensure 4

victory. 'Bomber' Burden led the way in this quarter with numerous posses- sions whilst bouncing Ben Do llman was on tor across half forward to provide another avenue to goal . Tilling across half back was working overtime tc stem the tide but when 'Buckets' Ryan goaled fro, the boundary line, SKOBS were home and into A Section for 1998. PREVIEW The weeks rest should be a big advantage for Ol d

Bri ghton today, but the SKOBS with two final, appearances to date have the kilometres in their legs and will be almost at home on the big ground after numerous Elsternwick Park successes over the past two seasons . On paper there appears little between the two sides with Old Brighton's confidence being buoyed by two rather emphatic victories over the SKOBS during the season . I believe one of these t wside lwinhadsomelytda nexpcth e SKOBS to compete the journey in style and salute by 29 points . RESERVES Last weeks performance by Old Brighton, with a

blend of youth and experience, was superb . With a full list to choose from again, Old Brighton will be a very tough opponent for Ormond who will need to man up several of the Old Brighton ruck rovers and centre line players . Ruck duels between McDonald and Wolf will also be interesting but I expect Old Brighton to win the flag here by 17 points and give Barnesy reason for celebration , CONGRATULATIONS To Brett "Bomber" Burden on his achievements

as a person and as a truly great amateur footballer. Bomber "old" son . I hope you and your princesses enjoy your day today . Keep punching. FINALE Thanks to all the club correspondents and to the staff at VAFA headquarters for ensuring the B Section reports have some readable content and meet the Tuesday deadline . I have enjoyed my two years as a scribe and now put the feather in the ink well for the last time with the hope that an aspiring "young" journo comes forth to raise the standard in 1998 . ~

which was enough to send themselves and all involved at Marcellin into celebratio n

SENIOR GRAND FINAL: NORTH OLD BOYS VERSUS MARCELLI N

the victors go the spoils, after this years 'C' Section Grand Final, Marcellin Old Collegian s football club will enjoy all that comes with winning a flag . In a result that would have surprised many football watchers . Marcellin were able to overpower the more fancied North Old Boys . who after a week off were not able to go with the Eagles as they surged ahead in the second term . To the game, and it was the Eagles, through Caffry who posted the first major, but the NOB's then countered and the two sides too'ed and fro'ed until the quarter time siren . North up by 3 points . The second term though saw Marcellin power away, helping to set up victory . With Cronin shutting down . Boyle in defence, Caffry kicking big goals, and Tregan owan chiming in with a couple, the Eagles piled on 7 goals to North's 2, to take a 34 point lead, and all the game's momentum into half time. Big O'Flynn was also getting plenty of ball for the Eagles and his big kicks into the forward line helped set up many of the Eagles goals . After half time North tried valiantly to get back into the game . In the third term they were persistent and dogged, forcing the ball forward as often as they could, trying to break through a Marcellin defence that was able to stand up to the challenge . North did outscore Marcellin . but only by 3 goals to 2 . and the Eagles also managed 5 behinds, their control of the game still evident. And at the final stages, it was still Marcellin by 31 points . In a Grand Final you rarely feel like giving up hope . It is the last game for the year, and your performance will always be remembered for what it was . So there was to be no giving up from North in the final term . They had been chasing tails all day but managed to add another 4 goals to their tally, a reward players like Smith, Tonkin, Manassa and Forbes . players who. along with most of the team, had had a fantastic year of football. only to fall one game short of the ultimate prize . But today was Marcellin's day . They continued to control the game into the last quarter and had another 10 scoring shots . 3 goals and 7 behinds the result .

~

mode, Premiers in 1997 to the tune of 30 points .

Congratulations to Marcellin, and in particular thei captain Dave Waters and Coach Tony Paatsch . Botl have made this year a great one for Marcellin, and afte . a couple of years of finals defeats, they deserve thet chance to mix it with the boys just upstairs . Good lucl to all in 'B' Section next year.

And to Frank Dunnell and his club captain Pau O'Farrell, commiserations for the day, but well done fo: a great season . All involved will be keen to get back tc 'B' grade, their stay with us a short one, but an enter taining one . Good luck for next year. RESERVES GRAND FINAL: ST BEDES MENTONE TIGERS V. NORTH OLD BOY; Two weeks ago these two teams met in the semi final at Sandringham where North inflicted th i

Tigers first defeat for the year. So North would hav( been quietly confident going into the match, only tc have that confidence shattered by an inspired perfor mance from the Tigers . The Tigers took the reins fron the outset, and were never going to let them go . It wa: a close game in the first half though, and all spectator: were being treated to a highly skilled, fast paced gain( of football . But in the third term the Tigers broke clear and got out to a 4 and a half goal lead after kicking thf first two majors of the last quarter. But like their senioi teammates, these NOB's were not going to go away qui etly. They put together a small comeback and got tc within 16 points, before the Tigers put the finishini touches on a performance that brought large smiles tc the faces of Tigers coach Brad Berry and skipper Marl Lomagno. Congratulations to both . For the Tigers, al performed beautifully, but outstanding performance : came from, Bracchi, Furlong, Connolly an d Kinsella. For the defeated NOB's, a day that promised sc much was not to be, and to their team and in particu lar Booth and Maguire . their teams best. commisera tions . Sc to North Old Boys an d St: Bedes Menton( Tigers. congratulations on your premiership winninâ‚Ź performances, and to all other 'C' Section teams, weI done on a great year of football, and I just hope to se( plenty of the same come season '98 .

D Ti by Peter Kelly David Coo k Tn absolutely perfect conditions a large crow surrounded the Parkdale Oval in anticipation of a Grand Final that was to be a fitting climax to D Section for 1997 . With the gates closed to all but foot traffic prior to the start of the senior game and an air of quiet expectation amongst supporters from each club the scene was set for a do or die battle . Old Geelong had easily won the reserve Grand Final over Parkside . The coaches began the build up using the time between matches to remind players there was no next week. Officials from both clubs were nervous, trying to find some task to take their mind from the game . The players appeared to be the most relaxed of all present focusing on the game ahead of them .

The first quarter saw Old Geelong open with their usual level of skill but failed to capitalise up forward, a problem that would be telling in the end result . With both backlines seemingly on top OGS failed to set up scoring opportunities limiting the success of their forward thrusts . Beaumaris on the other hand stayed in touch by making the most of every trip forward. At quarter time OGS lead by 5 points and seemed to have a slight advantage in the air and across the centre . The second quarter saw OGS control the first seven minutes attacking continually but being repelled by a very determined Sharks backline . The Sharks centre line then took control pushing up from defence and running into their forward line to create opportunities . Reidy started to get on top in the ruck duels around the ground bringing smaller men into the game. It was man on man pressure football with neither side giving or allowed to create on open running game. Salisbury was tagged to try and keep him in check, which opened the door for Hanrahan who would end the day with 6 goals . As the siren sounded Beaumaris led by 9 points with a shot to be taken on a 45 degree angle about 30 metres out. The resultant goal saw them 15 points up at the long break. Both coaches spent most of the break refocussing their players on the all important third quarter. When the game restarted it was a committed Sharks line up that took control winning in most key positions . It was OGS now playing catch up football that just doesn't suit their game plan . Sherman went down in a heaw knock and was taken from the ground but Beauy continued to drive forward and at three quarter time had opened up a lead of 29 points. It appeared to be over to all supporters . even the strongest OGS supporters had lost a little voice . The Sharks opened the last quarter extending their lead but OGS dug deep and started to claw their way back into the game . Kicking 4 unanswered goals the Sharks runner worked overtime getting every last effort from the players in Blue and Gold . OGS closed 8 '

to be within 7 points (although the scoreboarc showed 6) and the crowd were alive. The encourage ment to players from both clubs was loud and stron~ and it was pressure football . OGS attacked and we rgoinfwadthucerlfowadhn ~ costly fumble turned possession over . Again OG ; attacked down the grandstand side with a chance tc handball inboard and an open goal from close to thf boundary line. Another costly fumble saw the ball gc out and the resultant throw in with the Shark ; rebounding into attack. Beaumaris steadied taking ~ little longer to kick and wind the clock down . Ar opening saw the Sharks goal after a behind wa : kicked and to enjoy a win by 14 points . Reidy woulc have been best a field as he rucked all day tirelessl` in a lion hearted effort that saw him bring the run ning Sharks brigade into the game . Hanrahan with E was a close second . Well done Brett Marchant anc the match committee . Brett before the game wa : reflecting on his hard decision in who to leave out o. the team. The players that took the field did them selves proud and the club enjoyed the celebration ; well into Sunday. Beaumaris are also to be congratu lated on their show of camaraderie when after tgamefourplayesrcivedmalionsftermisn â‚Ź selection in lieu of the Executive committee members RESERVES In the early game Old Geelong set the scene b 3

scoring two quick goals but Parkside managed tc stay in touch and after a fairly even opening OGS lec by 6 points at quarter time . Ronchi (OGS) took thf mark of the match on the wing late in this quartei directly in front of the change rooms . The seconc quarter saw OGS slowly take control winning well ir the air and adopting a more disciplined approach tc lead by 15 points at half time . The highlight of tsecondquartewsheforts bohruckme r McCa ll from Parkside an d Walker from OGS in com plete control in the respective back halves . OGS capa bly led by Furphy ( Capt.) and Bones (Coach) tool complete control in the third to extend the lead by 2E points. 速 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 199i

The above photograph appeared in the Herald-Sun the day before our representative team played the VCFL at Elsternwick Park in July . Interestingly four of the six players pictured will be competing in this Sunday's P. section Grand Final.

The picture showed all the players in the team who had fathers who played VFL/AFL football . From the front is Simon Wood (Old Xavs - son of ex Nth Melb. player Maurie who is not pictured) ; to the right of Simon is Dan Richardson (Old Xavs): then Dan's father Barry Richardson ( ex-Richmond) ; Rohan Price (Old Scotch) : Barry Price (Collingwood) : Mike Blood (ex Hawthorn) . To Mike's left is this year's A section best and fairest medal winner, son Michael Blood from Old Xaverians . To Michael's left is St .Kilda Brownlow Medallist Neil Robe rts who is behind his son Toby (Old Melburnians) . Completing the picture is Carlton coach David Parkin who is behind his son Anthony who plays for Collegians .

Blues, Lions, Tigers and OT's rule REVIEW - GRAND FINALS SECTION 1

0 nee again fine weather greeted us and it was Uni . Blues who took full advantage of the conditions, in their match against Old Paradians last week. Opening strongly the Blues led well at quarter time and with Coleman and Callery doing well up forward looked ominous . On the other hand the OP's were struggling up forward with Ciavola, Harris and Vecchio struggling to shake off close checking opponents . At half time the Blues held a solid (3) goal break with the game very much in the balance with the OP's Talarico, Warren an d Gre en prominent . However much like the majority of the year the Blues' second half was terrific, they added (6) goals to (3) to take the 1997 Section 1 pennant . Fricker was dominant on ball, while Hocking and Johnson were fine (4) quarter contributors, and with Jackson on fire up forward with (5) the Blues ran on well . For the OP's Galvin, Villanti and Porteous battled hard all day but to no avail . SECTION 2 Old Scotch had battled their way through to meet Collegians from the first-semi final and some thought that three matches in as many weeks would be a tough ask for the Scotchies, however their opening burst shocked the Lions from the beginning . The match began at a furious pace and the taller Scotchies team used the ball well to add (4) goals to the Lions' (1) . Crow was dominating the ruck and around the ground providing Love, Gross and Prendergast with plenty of opportunities . The Lions hit back well in the second term with Gromotka on target up forward and Hosking and Elg beginning to exert their influence . Flore ntine was also looking dangerous despite close attention from his Old Scotch opponent, and at half time the match had swung back in favour of the Lions . The third quarter proved to be the best quarter of football for the day with both teams attacking the ball and their goals with monotonous regularity . The Lion's Johnson, Bri tten an d Champion were standout players during this time, while Hawkins an d Chapman were dangerous Scotchies . The final quarter began with a(6) point advantage to the Lions however this was to change as the Scotchies banged home the first to turn the match on its head. However a steadier Lions unit regrouped and despite the efforts of Thompson, Davis an d Lines were too strong in the run home. The Lions adding (6) goals to (2) to clinch wtcT.orEi.

SECTION ( 2) BLUE In a tight struggl e in the early match at __ Scammell Reserve St . Bedes Mentone Tigers fought hard to shrug off determined Ormond unit, hell bent on matching with their more skilful opponents. Ormond bege Byron on the dangerous Kingwe ll, and Ashford as loose man in defence to fill the forward's space, whi Serolin took Brown from the first bounce, wi Robbins battling both Cousins an d Will iams for tl major part of the day . The Tigers began the better ar with Kingwe ll booting ( 2) and Ryan, Carroll and Kii damaging onball, the Monds were behind the eight N from the start . Haines was proving a real handful f the Tigers mid-field and combined with Gleeson ar Dale the Monds began to get some good run from h< back late in the term . The second quarter was equa'~ as tight as both teams struggled to break free from tl other. Napier and Gangi were prominent for the Tiger as to were Pasara and Stasiak, and at the long bre< the Tigers held a solid (4) goal lead . After half time t Monds began to tire and when the Tigers slammed i their ninth just before three quarter time the gar looked beyond the Monds . Full credit to the Mon who in the last quarter never gave in with Wonnacoi Hammond and Naughton battling valiantly, wh Stephens, Cullen and Rowan worked desperately i forward . However it was the Tigers day with Alfo (before injured), McHugh and the McShanes also the thick of the action all day . SECTION (2) RE D A super opening quarter by Old Trinity in th match against St. Leos Emmaus put paid to a chance that the Two Blues' winning streak would cc tinue . (7) goals to (1) in the first saw the Two Blues w down at quarter time, with the OT's Passador, Kassa an d Pawsey doing as they pleased up forward . , equally as damaging second term certainly put t game beyond doubt and at the long break Steve Ma would well have wondered what he had done to desei such a brilliant half of football. While the OT's wi dominant in most positions Daniels, Morel, McGlc and Thomas battled hard all day. and combined w Devlin, Bonnici were fine Two Blues on the day . E the day belonged to the OT's who did not stop in I second half adding another (13) goals, with (12) gc kickers for the day emphasising their dominan Arrowsmith, Shaughnessy and Davatzis were b liant all dav and relished the conditions, while Jor an d Waldron were fine performers up forward . In conclusion congratulations to all players, coaches and officials who made it to last weekend's Grand Finals . The standard of football was terrific and and the spirit in which the matches played a credit to you all .

Special congratulations to Steve Carroll, Tim Killworth, Brian Bourke an d Steve Maus on winning Premierships last weekend and commiserations to Ken Johanesen, Terry Kenda ll, B rian Keating and Peter O'Connor . Thank you for you input and we look forward to your involvement again in 1998 . Well done .

UMPIRES CORNER by Leah Gallagher and Peter Simpso n

So now we have come to the final week of the year, where all the pre-season training and efforts during the year all come down to these last 100 minutes of football. To the teams competing this week, congratulations on reaching these finals and from Umpires' Corner we wish you the best. To our top four umpires who have the senior appointments congratulations . We hope that you fulfilled your goals with these appointments, the only advice to give the guys is 'enjoy' . PROMOTIONS Last week in congratulating teams that have

earned promotions in the 1998 season, the fourth team earning a place in D Section that was not recorded was St Patri cks Mentone Football Club . Also well done to premiers Marcellin (C Sec) and Beaumaris (D Sec) . VALE All the umpires would like to pass on their deepes t

thoughts to Richard Eastwood and family on the passing away of Richard's father . Keeping it all in the family last Saturday the Simpson clan just like umpiring together (or on the same day) . At the Wick we had the brothers Peter (reserves) and Anthony (seniors) having a run around and also in the goals of that reserve game was Peters godson Shannon Ryan . Hope Shannon looked after his godfather by taking Peter to the game but more importantly buying the first round. UMPIRE OF THE YEAR. At Vote Count Night, Amateur sponsor 'Blades Footwear' produced an award for the Umpire of the Year with the inaugural winner Mark 'Gibbo' Gibson . Mark is a fitting recipient of this award, in the way he presents himself on and off the field making him a role model for the up and coming guys . Poor Ross Treverton has this year been mentioned in this column on a few occasions for accidents that have happened with a VAFA approved Sherrin . So why would his last game of the year be any different to the start of the season . Very early in his D Reserve Grand

Final, Ross had positioned himself well behind the point post for an attempt at a goal by a player. The player couldn't kick straight and sent the ball in Ross's direction. A pack went up with someone thumping the ball through for a behind however Ross was only a few feet away and collected the ball smack in the face causing a split lip and blood flow . Ross being an ex-footballer just wanted to get into the action . THANK YOU This column could not be published without the help of the staff at Amateur Headquarters . So Simmo and Spider would like to thank : Angela for taking our calls and having a chat before being put through to our selected party . Sue for answering our concerns and pushing the deadline back a fraction when Spider was hungover and needed more time. Last but not least Phil our Editor who only used the censorship on a couple of occasions (Ed. note - twice today) . SOCIAL NEWS

Final fling of the season (with partners) is the Dinner Dance on 26th September at Tudor Court Receptions. $40 see Chris Stevens (s) or Michael Lentini with numbers and money . After the A Grade Grand Final stay back for the spit. Until next year, good luck with pre-season training . SIMMO & SPIDER Editor's Message: On behalf of the Executive could I take this opportunity of thanking all umpires who have supported Michael Sneddon and the VAFA this season . I trust your year was rewarding and that you will all return next season . To the two scribes my thanks for meeting all deadlines and putting together a most readable column - Phil Stevens .

COACHES' CLIPBOARD AFCANAFA

COPING WITH FINALS PRESSUR E eparing for fmals provokes a variety of responses from players. Some may stare moronically at the floor whilst others chatter constantly in a show of mock confidence . A few may be physically if and some seem less outwardly affected, preparing for the most important day of the season in a thoughtful and deliberate manner . All players however, will naturally be feeling some level of apprehension . Once the game begins basic skill errors often seem to dominate the opening minutes of the game as nervous players show the effects of over arousal by fumbling, giving away silly free's, forgetting instructions and team rules and making poor decisions under little or no pressure . Coaches need to develop an atmosphere conducive to peak performance, particularly in those opening minutes of the game, by assisting players to manage and control their anxiety and arousal levels . A number of guiding principles follow that summarise the key points requiring the attention of coaches . The major concern for a coach is to realise that there is a level of arousal at which players are likely to

VAFA

perform at their peak. Above or below this level, they are likely to under perform . Furthermore, this "optimism" level of arousal is unique to each player and is related to the individuals personality traits . Observation through the season will assist the coach in recognising these types . Relaxation techniques will lower levels of arousal whilst techniques such as enlivening exercise, speeches and music will lift arousal. 1 . Treat the Player as an individual . 2 . Make the pre-game preparation as normal as possible. 3 . When addressing your players focus on factors other than how important the game is . 4. Reduce each players uncertainty and bolster their confidence as much as possible . 5 . Be attuned to what behaviours anxious athletes engage in. 6 . Coaches need to control their own anxieties . GRAND FINAL - 199 2

Chief Executive Phil Stevens tipped Old Brighton to take out 'B' Section flag and after a bit of dithering picked Coll egians to defeat De La for 'A' Section flag . The Grand Final weekend kicked off at 8 .50am, on Saturday with the U19 Section 1 Grand Final between Old Xaverians and De La Salle who won the chance for another shot at OX with an 8 .6 to 7 .5 win against Old Melburnians . U19 2 Central flag was won by Old Camberwell against Therry, and in U19 2 South Chirnside Park won their first every Amateur flag when they defeated AJAX . In Section 1 Old Xaverians were in control all day to take out the flag, 6 .15 to 4 .6, reversing last year's Grand Final result . It was a windy day surprisingly for the 'B' Section Grand Final . Old Brighton had first use but kicked badly to lead 3 .9 to 0 .1 at the first change . Old Trinity had a wonderful second term kicking 7 .4 to a solitary goal, bottled the Brighton boys up in the third term to go on to win the flag, 10 .10(70) to 8 .14(62) . Old Trinity's team was : Bks: David BALASZY, Nick BEARDSLEY, Grant HUDSO N

HBks : Graeme PAVEY, Rick BEARDSLEY . Steve HOPKIN S C : Dave ROGERS, Mick HEDLEY, Andrew ALLIBON (Capt . ) HF: Sam OLDFIELD, Rob PHILLIPS, Rod HEATH F : David O'SHAUGHNESSY, Steve HATFIELD, Julian HODDE R Rks : Mike TURNER . Adam ANDERSON, Trevor NORMA N I/C : Damien MAKRIS, Anthony DUNN Coach : Alan JOHNSON Six played in 1997 - Balaszy, Hudson, Allibon . Phillips, Anderson, Norman On Sunday . Collegians kicked off with a very easy win in 'A' Reserve Section against St . Bernard's . 13 .8 to 4 .8, and then had a fairly easy afternoon watching the big game . Collegians were in control all day and were never really in doubt . Q by Q scores were : Coll : 5 .7 9 .9 13 .18 14 .23 (107) De La : 1 .3 5 .5 6 .10 9 .13 (67) The Collegians team was :

Bks : Andrew WRIGHT . Stuart HINCHEN . Brad WOOLHOUSE

HBks : LORD, James BENNETT, Christian DAVID-

SON C : Gary IRVINE, Mark HIBBINS, Darren WARNE R HF: David HOYLE . Rick SCHOBER, Tony PARKIN F : Tony WALLACE, Stephen MOUNT, Jason DANSEY RR: POLLOCK, Matt GALBRAITH, David THOMSO N I/C : David KERR, Nick PROCTOR Coach: Leigh CARLSON 10 YEARS AGO - 19 87 Ormond were happy when the Tribunal found the charge against champion utility player Phil Mehrten not sustained . 'A' Section reporter Ross Booth and VAFA General Manager Peter French were at it yet again . Ross took two lines and picked Old Xaverlans, Peter French equivocated for two pages and then summed up "their aerial strength, pace, memories of losing last year's Grand Final, confidence and efforts against Ormond during the season entitled them to favouritism in what promised to be a most memorable A Section Grand Final - Old Xaverians for me" .

A very big crowd . sun, little breeze, jazz, children's rides - it was a magnificent day . Old Xaverians through Martin Beattie and Peter Curtain were in control and led 4 .2 to 2 .2 . From then on Ormond through the dominance of rovers Cox and Young, the very aggressive centre play of Phil Mehrten . the great defence of Scott Taylor, and with Paul Nankervis showing maturity on the wing, took control and in the final three terms kicked 13 .9 to 8 .8 to win 15 .11 to 12 .12 . Xavs fought back to within 11 points before Steve McCooke settled the issue 'Maradonna style' with an angle kick off the ground . It was the second A Section flag for coach Mike McArthur-Allen in three years . The Ormond side lined up as follows :

B : Brett Connell . Brad Nash . Scott Taylor HB : Russell Barnes (Capt), David McDonald, Paul Forsyt h C : Phil Kingston, Phil Mehrten . Paul Nankervis

HF : Tim Hille . Mark McDonald, Paul Sutherland

F : Joey Young, Paul Schuhkraft, Paul McDonald R : Lindsay McMahon, Martin Tobin, Paul Cox I/C: Steve McCooke, Geoff Russel l Umpires were Greg Hardeman an d Kevin Segota . Marcellin took all the sting out of Therry in the 'B' Section preliminary final when they kicked 8 .8 to 1 .2 in the first term and won 12 .11 to 7 .12 . Best were Petroff, L . Getson, J . Adam, Ebert, P . Sheehan, M . Day .

And so on the Sunday after the VFL Grand Final in blistering heat Marcellin faced up to St . Bernards, the final scores being St . Bernards 17 .10 (124), Marcellin 12 .20 (92) . The winning team lined up as follows : B: Maurie Sullivan, Kevin Mahady, John Frase r HB : Marcus Marshall, Mick O'Dea, Garry McAllister C : Andrew Nathan, John Federico, Mark Mahady HF : Peter Wood, Paul Hogan, Greg Wood F: Robbie Purcell, John Pearson, Mick Bradner R : John Klaayson, Frank Monaghan, Vin Comito I/C : Tim Burke, Jack O'Connell Coach: Frank Melican John Pearson in the final quarter kicked a fine goal from about 45 metres out on a 45 degree angle - probably the last goal kicked at Elsternwick Park with a DROP KICK. Life Member of the VAFAUA and former president, Don Hiilier, retired as a goal umpire with 250 games behind him, 14 A Section Grand Finals, interstate and intrastate matches . Well done, Don, a man universally respected and admired . 15 YEARS AGO - 198 2

Grand Final weekend opened on a beautiful sunny Saturday with a torrid, hotly contested match between Old Melburnians and Ivanhoe with the game in doubt until half way through the final term when Rohan Brown and Barry Morphett kicked prodigious goals for Old Melburnians to move away to a convincing victory, 18 .7 to 15 .12 . The gladiators battling on the oval for glory and immortality were : Old Melburnians B : M . Daddo, R . Pisarski, C . Knight HB : P . Murray, S . Trumble, M . Youngman C : J . Thompson, P. Mumme, J . F: K . Edwards, C . Bye, A . Jone s R: W. Dulevskis, R . Stewart, A . Balcombe Coach: P. Stevens

Sunday, while a wintry day was a much more sober occasion when North Old Boys won the 'A' Section L .A . Adamson Trophy easily defeating De La Salle 19 .7 (121) to 8 .15 (63) . North's defence was impregnable in the first and third quarters when kicking against the wind and always had control . The winning side : North Old Boy s B : M . Hedley, J . Griffin, M . Malone HB : S . Hibbert, P. Considine, M . Welch C : S . Weir, M . Borcich (Capt), W. Clark HF: D . Butera, J . Jordan, D . Galvan F : K . Hehir, G . Dillon, G . Burgin R: B . Horan, Garry Carroll, S . O'Rourke I/C : R . Cedaro, M . Shembre y Coach: Terry Scanlon Assist . Coach : Matt Purcell Best: Malone, Borcich, Griffin, O'Rourke, Hedley, Horan . 65 YEARS AGO - 1932 Old Scotch Collegians won its second successive A Section premiership when it defeated State Savings Bank by 28 points in a brilliant game at Elsternwick Park before a crowd of 2500 . Old Scotch played a brilliant second term to lead 6 .12 to 3 .5 at half time . Bank were not done with as they kicked 5 goals straight in the third term to trail 8 .5 to 7 .16 . They were unlucky at that stage to lose their centreman, Robert son, A Section best and fairest for the season, and centre half back, Coutts, with an injured shoulder. Davidson (Old Scotch) went into the ruck at this stage and dominated the last quarter . Pearson (Old Scotch) kicked 4 goals to take his tally to 126 and Chandler (S .S . Bank) kicked 3 to make the century. The Lieutenant-Governor, Sir William Irvine, presided at the Association's dinner in the Melbourne Town Hall to honour Mr L .A. Adamson's presidency over the last 40 years as he was retiring from the position . (Our historian, Joseph Johnson, has shown this was a misconception as Adamson did not become president until 1896 - N .R .) . They liked speeches in those days . The toast was proposed by Mr. W .A . Watt and supported by Mr . R .R . Sholl . Mr L .A . Adamson replied . Mr. E .W. O'Fee (VicePresident) proposed the toast to 'Kindred Associations' . There were four replies : Mr. C .M . Hickey (Australian Football Council), Mr. R .P . Franklin (Associated Public Schools), Dr. Alex Robertson (Aust . Cricket Board of Control) and Mr. H .R . Weir (Victorian Amateur Athletic Association) .

105 YEARS AGO - 1892 During the 18 game season, Collegians lost two games . Their scribe stated 'on each of the occasions mentioned the foreign ground and the weather were against the team' . He slammed St. Jude's 'their ground and arrangements are of such a .nature that it will be next to a miracle if they are ever defeated on it . The struggle for the premiership was essentially between Collegians, Alberton and St . Jude's . The return match with St .

Jude's on the Warehouseman's Ground (now the Albert Ground) was drawn because only goals counted . The scores were 3 .13 to 3 .1, and Collegians claimed a moral victory with 16 to 4 scoring shots . The final between Collegians and Alberton took place on the Toorak-Grosvenor Ground, attracting a large crowd . 'Really good football' by both sides resulted in a premiership to Collegians . 12 .7 to 5 .7 . The captain of the team was H .D . 'Grip' Johnson, a wonderful rover.
