A SECTION by Jason Frenkel

0 nce again the opening round of the VAFA season was blessed with beautiful weather and both Saturday and Sunday provided perfect conditions for football . The A-section didn't disappoint with five bumper clashes and an exciting blend of talent, surprise and good old-fashioned hard footy on show at the various venues . The abundance of talent was to be found at Toorak Park, where the reigning premiers showed why they've won three on the trot with an 84-point hiding of the Redlegs . Promising signs across town at Camberwell Sports Ground too, but it wasn't coming from the runners-up as Scotch went down to a rejuvenated University Blues by 45 points . De La Salle jostled all afternoon at home to the Lions before a 5 goal final term helped them to a 17 point win over the undermanned Collegians . The two newcomers to A-section, Old Brighton and St . Kevins, both got close to wins in Round 1 but neither walked away the points . SKOBS fought back from a 7 goal deficit at three-quarter time to get within a point of Old Haileybury in a fantastic game at Glenferrie Oval . Old Brighton also had some chance of winning in the last quarter of their game, on Sunday at Elsternwick Park, before St . Bernards kicked away to a 20 point win . Luke Vassallo proved to be the difference between the two sides with seven match-winning goals in a best-on-ground performance that earned him the highly-coveted Sportscover Player of the Day award on Optus Vision channel 50 . PREVIEW Last week's break should see all sides fresh and firing today for the four Saturday games and Sunday's Match-of-the-Day between St. Kevins and Co ll egians at Elsternwick Park . The Lions have been rocked by player losses over the summer with a sizeable chunk of the 1997 team missing from this year's line-up . Jefferson has proved to be a valuable ruckman for the Lions but Marcus Dollman and former Old Paradian Dion Ciavola head a strong on-ball unit for St . Kevins in the middle and will be crucial at the centre bounce contests . Warne-Smith is capable of kicking big bags of goals for Collegians but I fancy they will struggle to cover the likes of Garvey, Fraser, Mahoney and Ryan in the St . Kevins forward line . SKOBS by 21 points . Two sides looking to stay in good form are Uni Blues and De La Salle in what should be a great match at the University Oval on Saturday . Blues put a disappointing '97 behind them with a great

win over Scotch and [ De Crespigney looks to be a valuable addition to a forwar d line that already contains the talented Ad Lennen. De La will be a difficult proposition ÂŤ youngster Simon Wood and the returned Mannix bolstering their tall man stakes this s son while Evans . Elliot, Jackson and co . will be hand to drive the D's forward. Blues at home i : close one by 5 points . Old Brighton host Old Scotch in a ma where both sides will be looking to improve their first round efforts . Old Brighton had plenb the ball against Bernards but will need to dispi of it better if they are to get the most out of I wards Nick Perry and Tim McNamara. The mat up between Tim Holt and Mathew Jackson in Cardinals' backline promises to be a beauty w the dashing Brighton forward pitted against diminutive Scotch speedster. Brighton by points. St. Bernards travel south of the river aga this time hoping to find an Old Melburnians s shell-shocked from a first-round thrashing . Twc A-grade's most enigmatic players will feature this game, with the wily Micah Berry capable turning a match on its head for the Redlegs . Wl Luke Vassallo showed in Round 1 not only ! matchwinning qualities but his versatility at h< dling a variety of roles, with a shift down fonv< that paid off with seven goals . It will be interest ; to see where Garry Foulds plays him today, bu think the Redlegs will bounce back to win by points . Old Haileybury face the daunting C Xave ri ans team at home in an important game Simon Meehan's charges . Tall timber is in abc dance at Old Haileybury with the two sets brothers. Seccull and Hilton, along with Cn Hucker, providing the Bloods with marking pov all over the ground . Options aplenty for Xavs I with Richardson, Bourke and Jones all capable kicking big scores and a host of on-ballers a half forwards handy near the big sticks, but jt for the heck of it . I'm tipping the Bloods in boilover by 18 points . REMEMBER PATRONS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO BRING ALCOHC INTO ELSTERNWICK PARK OR INTO ANY VAFA VENI

B SECTIO N

by Michael Georg e Season 1998 kicked off with all clubs either joining or rejoining B Section winning, perhaps suggestin g some of the stalwarts might be in for a rough year . Both Old Trinity and Old Paradians appear to set good for years and North Old boys first up win bodes well for them. After a disastrous tipping debut (one out of five), this scribes tips should perhaps be ignored although armed with one rounds form as a guide things might improve . MARCELLIN V. OLD IVANHOE

Marcellin after trailing Old Ivanhoe at quarter time were able to record their first win in B Section for the year. Marcellin held a four goal led at half time but faced an Old Ivanhoe revival in the second half. However Old Ivanhoe's increased workrate did not necessarily convert into goals having ten scoring shots for the term . In contrast Marcellin although attacking less still managed four goals including a bomb from the boundary line from Karavasilis . Old Ivanhoe got to within 4 points at the 22 minute mark of the last quarter but Marcellin were able to steady and stand up to the Old Ivanhoe pressure, repelling their attacks in the final minutes of the game . In the end it was Marcellin's more structured forward line which proved the decisive factor . NORTH OLD BOYS V. MHSOB B Section's other debutants, North Old Boys also kicked off their season with a win over MHSOB . In a solid team performance NOB's burst clear with a nine goal second quarter and while MHSOB were fighting it right out they were unable to reel them in . NOB's had a number of avenues to goals with six multiple goalkickers led by Khroder with 5. MHSOB relied more heavily on Woodley who kicked 7 for the losers . OLD PARADIANS V. THERRY PENOLA

Old Paradians in a high scoring clash at Parade were able to hold off a final flurry from Therry Penola to record a home win . The game turned into a shoot out between the two forward lines and Old Parade were well served by forwards McMahon 6, Brullo 4. and Ciavola kicking 3 goals where as Therry spread their goals around with seven multiple goal kickers . Therry should be encouraged by a good performance against perennial powerhouse Parade away from home and by their freakish accuracy in front of goal, kicking 20 .2 which kept them in the game. OLD TRINITY V. ORMOND

Old Trinity recorded a good away win against Ormond after trailing at three quarter time . In a game that was 'nip and tuck' all day Old Trinity were able to gain the ascendancy through some astute moves at three quarter time by Bernie Dunn and younger legs finishing the game off more strongly . Ormond were nine points up at three quarter time and at home would have been confident of hanging on to grab the points . However a revamped Trinity line-up drove the ball for-

ward to their polished forward unit of Stickland (5 goals) and Heath (4 goals) and kicked away to win by 21 points . IVANHOE V. MAZENOD Mazenod got over the line in a thriller at War Park in Round One . The game was close all day Ivanhoe leading by 11 points at half time. But it w< the third quarter where Mazenod made what w adecisvbrkofthgmicnsxoaltkg a goal lead into the last term . At the start of the last it appeared Mazenod were going to run away with game adding a further three goals . But Ivanhoe at h refused to lie down with Ivanhoe forwards Tag Sclocchi and Joyce both scoring. With Ivanhoe Giles' goal in the dying seconds of the game the s was tied. In a mad scramble in the centre M awrenchdtebalout fhecntreadwobl t behind through to win the game . PREVIEWS OLD TRINITY V. PARADE In the clash of the heavyweights of B section Trinity will enjoy the return to their home ground the confined spaces of Ormond's Gunn Reserve . Trinity appear to have an effective combinatioi youngsters (12 out of last Saturdays 21 were under 21) and with proven players such as Rams Heath and Stickland will make them hard to beat . Parade also enjoyed a good start to the year, as win form is good form, but with Therry scoring freely week they might struggle to contain Old Trinity's wards. MAZENOD V. ORMOND Mazenod will be on a high after their last kick o: day win and should continue against Ormond at lu Mazenod will need forwards Ballenger and Fisher t< and will be encouraged by the form of Drew O'Donaf and on ballers Murray and Occhuito . The Ormond brains trust held a lengthy post in conference and the team can be expected to play ou full four quarters this week . Ormond won a lot of : ball against Old Trinity but must convert their chai to win the close ones. Mazenod by 10 points. MARCELLIN V. NOB'S

In the battle of the section's debutants both wi keen to continue on their winning form . De : Marcellin's home ground advantage, NOB's win age MHSOB, tipped to be one of the big improvers of the son, suggests they might go on with it against Marc( However Marcellin will be keyed up for And . Caffrey's 200th game for Marcellin . NOB's by 20 points .

C SECTION by Russell Goul d have always wondered why marathon runners do what they do. They choose to be overly thin, travel t o a starting line somewhere in the world, and run a really long way. If it is cold, they still just wear shorts and a singlet, plus a pair of mittens . The mittens on their hands make it alright that the rest of their body is blue . They run, and then they stop . They don't score any points, kick any goals or anything, they just run from A to B . And people watch . Sport is amazing.

still up for grabs going into the last term . But the Bullants again settled, and throug h James (6 goals) up forward, and solid defence I Hare and Smith, they managed to hold out the Tiâ‚Ź Good for the Tigers were vice captain Hayes, as we youngsters Ryan and Faulkingham . Old Mentonians defeated Old Geelong by points, however no information was received on match .

REVIEW The closest contest of the round was at Bluff road

where St.Kilda South Caulfield managed to hold out Hampton Rovers by just 9 points in a low scoring affair played in perfect footballing conditions . The Sainters boasted many new faces in their team and were the steadier in defence in this tight tussle . Rovers though played some encouraging football and were unlucky to go down. Best for the Sainters were Gilmore and Astapenko,as well as newcomer Matt O'Keefe who kicked four telling goals . At Beaumaris, the Sharks unveiled their 'D' section flag and picked up where they left off last year, disposing of Thomastown by 81 points. Thomastown took the early initiative and had two goals before the Sharks could adjust. The Bears continued to play strong, vigourous footy in the second, but the Sharks managed to settle and kicked five quick goals to take a handy lead into the break . The second half saw Beaumaris take control and on their big home ground they gradually wore the Bears down to run out comfortable victors . Best for the winners were Catlin, Easton and Groves, and for Thomastown Chilli, Ari and Skaff tried hard all day. St .Leos versus Banyule was transferred to Banyule due to ground resurfacing at Bennetswood . but that failed to help the newcomers as St .Leos ran all over them to win by 81 points . The first half was tight, both teams trying to settle into their respective game plans, and St .Leos lead by 18 points at the long break . The third quarter though was all Two Blues . They piled on 11 goals to 2 to take an unassailable 10 goal lead into the orange break . They carried it on in the last to give new coach Harry Harisiou as great start with his new club . In what could be described as an upset of sorts, Bulleen/Templestowe out ran last years preliminary finalists St .Bedes mentone and were victors to the tune of 38 points . In ideal conditions at Bulleen, the first quarter was tight, only five points separating the two at the break. But the Bullants midfield took over in the second term, and they kicked 7 goals to the Tigers three, thanks primarily to a host of running players constantly streaming into their forward line . The Tigers clawed their way back in the third, and the game was

PREVIEW Banyule host a Hampton Rovers side who c close last week and will really want to win . I'm : Banyule will not want a repeat of their first ro effort, but may still struggle . I will go for Haml Rovers .

St.Bedes Mentone host St .Leos who will cons themselves ten foot tall and bulletproof after t thumping round one win . The Tigers though are E at home and will not want to go 0-2 . Tigers to win . Old Geelong meet Bulleen/Templestowe, Bullanst also fired up after a good round one win . I the Bullants and they played a good style of foot style that should win this week . Thomastown are at home and get the chanc show a bit against Old Mentonians . The Bears wc not have been happy with the last round, but I don't think they have enough to beat the Panthers will win . Finally St .Kilda South Caulfield, who are a b an unknown quantity . take on Beaumaris who n than proved their capability of making it in C Sect I will go for the Sharks, and hope their first up win not fuelled solely by the adrenalin rush of hoistir premiership flag.

Thomastown Congratulations to Vince Capeci an d Ben Sri on reaching 100 and 50 games respectively . St .Bedes Menton e Well done to Dave Goodehild for playing his 10 game for the club in round 1 . REMEID2,1 LED' a

D SECTION by Ken Bremne r & Tom Brai n C ood to get the first one under our belts and now, after the Easter break, evervone shoul d be munching at the 'bit' to build solid foundations by notching up a string of victories . For 6 teams at least, today will hopefully be the starting point, whilst the others will be hoping to building on their first round points . REVIEW Monash Blues 41 point winners over an extremely competitive St . Pats Mentone . Blues closed out the Vultures in the second stanza scoring 4 majors to nil . St Pats matched Monash in the second half, clearly demonstrating that they will be a force to be reckoned with . Old Essendon Grammar registered a comfortable 34 point victory over a'grity St. Johns OC's who, given that they had to cross the International Date Line did pretty well . In the battle between two of last season's E Grade premiers, Southbank and Yarra Va lley OB's, the Bankers held sway in a top class game to run out victors by 40 points . At Pitcher Park, Salesian jumped Parkside early doors, however the 'Red Devils' matched up, drew level at quarter time then advanced to a four goal lead at half time . Again Salesian knuckled down and got to within three points at lemon time . The last term belonged to Parkside and they blitzed Salesian to ultimately score a big 10 goal ^ir: . In a game dominated by defences of both teams . AJAX were able to get their centreline firing after the long interval and race to a 32 point lead at the last break against a very determined Uni Blacks team . Sustaining some serious injuries the Jackers played out the last 8 minutes with only 16 men and withstood a late Blacks challenge to limp over the line 23 points ahead . Whitefriars were basically in control all day in the match against Aquinas . The Friars 5 goal quarter time lead was maintained throughout, although Aquinas did get to within 20 points midway through the last, before the Friars rallied and slammed another 5 snags to wrap things up . PREVIEW St . Johns OC v. Monash Blues - No club ever experiences an easy days outing against St . Johns . especially at Doveton and even more so when the 'hosts' are coming off a loss . The 'Blues' can rightly enter the game with a degree of confidence, however KB reckons the JOC's greater determination might take the wind out of their 14

sails by 12 points . Whilst agreeing with most of ; co-scribes' comments I fell the confidence 1 Blues would have gained from their first up v might be just enough to get them over the li even out at Dandenong. Yarra Va lley OC v. Old Essendon Gramma The Valley boys will need to be at their best overcome an accomplished Essendon team, l : given that they will have unfurled their premi, ship pennant, they're more than likely to be Nu and truly primed for a big one . In a tipster's nigl mare, KB gives the nod to Yarra Valley by points . TB thought that Yarra were quite imprf sive last week even though they lost, they e young and fit and now having had a taste of the section will come out strongly and should just Ni a close one against a competitive OEG . Parkside v. Southbank - A game between b first round winners. Both teams have had a terr ic association in the past 6 or so years with ho ours about even, both on and off field . Purf based on bias . KB selects Southbank to win by points in what is anticipated to be a crackerja game . I believe that Parkside were very impressi in round 1 but so where the Tigers . Both sides rt the ball well and have good defenses but t] Bankers may just have a bit more fire power t forward than the Devils to win a'tight one . Salesian v . AJAX - The home team will 1 eager to notch up their first four points of the ye< however the visiting team will be just as keen build on their hard fought first round victor Injury plagued but with great depth, the Jacke are KB's selection to continue on their winnix way, albeit in a close encounter, by 9 point Salesian would be disappointed with their openir while the Jackers would have been jumping ov the moon with their performance, and with mo : players returning to the fold TB tips them to coi tinue their winning ways . Whitefriars v. Uni. Blacks - The Friars boa a very potent attack pitted against a rock solb tight defence . Weight of numbers will gii Whitefriars the chance to post a winning score an the Blacks will have to capitalise on every one their own forward forays . KB confidently predici a comfortable winning margin of 40 points i favour of the Friars . Always hard to beat at h o

I t E t ial5 and TB feels today will be no exception ;ainsl the Blacks

TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS One of our goal umpires in Round I at the Hampton Rovers v. St . Kilda South Caulfield (actually doing his first ever game with the VAFA having come from the from the ground Southern League) . was seen hobbling at half time with a calf injury . Spending the whole half time break getting a rub down from the Hampton Rovers physio (thanks for that) . The goal umpire did the second half with great gusto under the circumstances . Someone should have told this goal umpire that the Amateurs is a lot rougher and tougher . Especially for goal umpires. Well done Eugene . LAST WEEK'S RULE ANSWE R The VAFA do not require a line across the centre of the circle (see p.97 of the 1998ix Fixture anebfrokm and vth h easuchrkmnpoa direction . OPENING REMAR K Well the first round has been and gone and already a week off due to the Easter weekend . I can assure you there would be a few of the elder statesman quite happy with the week's break, and probably would ideally like a week's break between every round of the season . Only joking guys and gals . Now that you have had a sniff of the 1998 season, there is great opportunity for all umpires to put in some good performances now and set yourselves up for th e rest of the season . Good luck to all . Adam & Leah

In a pair of Blades boots, with the revolutionary sole system and internal wedge, you'll notice the improved performance and comfort where it m.-I.tters most . On the ground .

Knitwear REVIEW Round one, phew its over, the nerves are all tha t ittle more relaxed now, having had a weeks rest . As predicted, the Hunters got over St . Marys, Power House had a little more than Chirnside . Peninsula woke up Caulfield, Swinburne upset the Wickers at home in a great first up win and Old Camberwell had a little too much for Oakleigh . PREVIEW Now in round two, we have Chirnside Park at home against Glenhuntly . In what should turn out to be quite a good home ground advantage throughout the year I'll tip the homeside for this reason alone. Glenhuntly look to be in good form though . so Chirnside will have to perform at their very best for a home side victorv . Elsternwick take on Power House at home in what should turn out to be a more competitive affair. Elsternwick have the ingredients to perform well but as previously mentioned might just rely on too few. Thus, Power House coming off a confidence boosting first-up victory should get another four points.

At home Old Camberwell take on Swinburne . Both coming off good wins in Round 1 and both full of confidence . Old Camberwell at home should and will turn out to be a big task for all comers this season and Swinburne will learn of this very quickly . The home side is my tip, although last week Swinburne surprised many although not likely today. Caulfield to take on Oakleigh at home . Both sides didn't get the flying start they were after but still showed enough to prove they'll be their abouts later in the season . Caulfield like the other tips so far are playing at home so again for this reason I'll tip them but only just . In the final game of the round . St. Mary's take on Peninsula . Peninsula will go north full of co nfi-

dence from their Round I victory and ~ should have too much fire power for St . Mary's even at home . In the two's I' ll tip - Chirnside Park. Powe House. Old Camberwell . Caulfield at home an( Peninsula . Social notes : Glenhuntly Past Players day on Sunday 19tl April at Clubrooms - food and drink available - a] welcome. St . Mary's - new players night on Saturdai 18th April at Clubrooms . All new players invitec into the foory club . Power House - Cocktail Night . all welcome tc attend at the main Power House rooms on the l aintheClubLog .

Peninsula OB Jason Bleasby - 150 games Jason has been a courageous player for the Pirates over many years, captaining the Reserve ; team in '96 to the club's first premiership . Well done Spider . Rod Sharpin & Brad Taylor - 50 games Congratulations to both players who were part of the successful Round 1 victory over Caulfield Grammarians and played their 50th games together. Well done to you both . Michael Warner - 50 games Congratulations on this fine achievement of 50 matches for the Pirates today . Adam Landry - 100 games Adam began in 1993, winning the Reserves B&F in his first year. He has played all of his football ever since in the Seniors . The club looks forward to many more games from this solid contributor .

E SECTION (White) by Barry Hicke y

Perfect conditions send us on our 4 plus month journey to the '98 flag deciding day, with Kew , Williamstown CYMS and Old Carey all looking ominous . These are though, very early days, and who knows what the post El Nino winter holds in store? REVIEW UHSOB found Old Carey's all-round skills a bit beyond them at this stage of their preparation, but are not to be written off, another couple of games will make a big difference . The C's were relieved to have such a good start, and with their defence tight, the on-bailers creative, and the forwards very efficient, coach Glenn Taylor was almost caught smiling! Fitzroy Reds began their year well against LaTrobe University with a convincing win, but both sides are saying nothing, so the scribe can't really improve on that ! Richmond Central again confounded the scribe with a good win over Bulleen Cobras in a high scoring game . Central broke away in the third term to set up their win . Chris Andonopoulos, Central on-baller, scared the daylights out of some parrots flying over the field by briefly joining them taking a screamer in the first . Cobras had top games from their full forward, and Schneider and Thompson were also in top form . No rth Brunswick ran up against a Kew side at their steamrolling best . Serge D'Angelo already has the Brown and Gold machine moving sweetly, and North could find no answers . Despite Mick Sorletto's courageous efforts . North were undermanned and no match for the superior Kew . And, note carefully. Porte and King were not in the Kew line-up! Newcomer Hayden Sheehan stood out for Kew in the ruck and FP. Williamstown CYMS were too strong for Old Westbourne in a solid win . The youthful CY's runners were too much for the 'early season' Warriors, who would have been in serious strife without Mal Gibb's marking, and Brad Franklin's possession getting . PREVIEW La Trobe play UHSOB after both will have set-

tled down from the 'un-natural' pre-Easter first round . LaTrobe's big ground might have the Green and Browns in a spot of bother by the last quarter, and the home side should be 2 or 3 goals up at the siren . Bulleen Cobras host Fitzroy Reds for their first fixture game back at the Koonung since the

'96 season . The i Cobras have loads of talent available an d it is just a matter of them 'clicking' together on the field for them ti become a top combination . Reds could well be th, dark horse of '98, so tipping against them toda could be foolhardy, but the Cobras are a 6 goa better on their home turf and should win by 3 or, goals . Kew confront Richmond Central in wha promises to be a top match . Central's big problen will be shutting down Kew's powerhouse centre, and on-ballers, who provide so many opportunitie, for their prolific forwards . If Porte and King an back in Kew's side, they will be an added headach for Tim Pontefract, even though he does have th Shannon brothers for such emergencies . Bu Central will still be battling to contain the shee volume of ball that streams into Kew's scorin ; zone, and at home the latter should carry the da ; by 5 or 6 goals . Old Westbourne meet Nort h Brunswick a Sayers road, with both sides determined ti improve on round 1 efforts . North will be lookin! for more support for Mick Sorletto . Bill McMahon Darren Adams, and Brett Whitman, while thi Warriors will have worked a bit more 'run' int their legs . While it is not easy to win out at wind, Werribee, North should have regrouped better am win by 4 or 5 goals . Williamstown CYMS and Old Carey play it the Match of the Dav, in what should be an earl, guide to the real contenders for '98 honours . Bott sides are very quick and skilful which will, weath er permitting, make for exhilarating watching fo the supporters . Equally, they are alike in wantin! to live down the memories of horror finals series it '97 . This scribe was well and truly bollocked by thi C's players for tipping them to win by a few point ; in round 1, but the same margin is tipped in thi ; game . The combination of the Fearon Reserve an( CY's capacity to run all day will test the C's to thei. limit, but their experience and marking powe right round the ground should see them with thei. noses just in front of the line . Reserves winners should be: UHSOB, Fitzro, Reds . Kew, North Brunswick and Old Carey. To] effort from Central's evergreen forward Pete . Jackson in dobbing 10 big ones against . Well done Jacko! ! tCobras Correspondents the Monday numbers an 9547 9144 . Fax 9547 7764. The round I effor

As we all know, football is a winter sport but even the purists will no doubt reflect during th e murky months of June and July as to the wonderful conditions greeting all sides in the first round . The only down side was the number of 'cramps' sustained that kept trainers and water boys alike . extremely busy . As Malcolm Blight would say, round one saw F Section produce a pizza shop of results. namely a small, couple of mediums and a large win . Still, to all the clubs who sustained a fist round loss, bear in mind that no Olympic marathon has ever been won by the first runner out of the stadium . REVIEW Werribee notched its first win in the VAFA in a game in which the final result was not a true indication of the competitiveness of the two sides . The Rats led early and still only three points separated the two sides at three quarter time until Werribee kicked away in the last quarter . Rutherford . Sutton and Gatley were the best for the Rats . The Gryphons confirmed many pre-season expectations with a resounding victory over Eley Park . The Sharks will want to consolidate quickly to avoid repeats in the future . Syndal Tally Ho greeted the Senior grade with a confidence boosting win at the expense of West Brunswick . Whilst it is early days, things are looking good for the Hoers. Finally, the Hawks were the only away from home winners as they journeyed out to Eltham . A great first quarter set them up but it was a struggle from then on as the Turtles slowly but unsuccessfully whittled back the lead. PREVIEW The first game for preview sees West Brunswick at home to Monash . The Westies disappointment at

their first round effort would be matched by the jubilation of th e Gryphons. Whilst the home paddock is sure to offe solace to the Westies . The Gryphons are boiling a the moment and are expected to notch back to bac : victories first uo . The next game sees two victors from the firs round cash when Hawthorn hosts Syndal at th Hawks new home ground of "Dog Doo Reserve" . Th pooper scooper has been in overdrive to ensure n, accidents are incurred . Syndal was ultra impressiv, first up however the Hawks away win also count strongly in their favour . Fancy the Hawks to do it fo 'Big Dave' in a close one. The third game for decision sees ANZ Alber Park host Eltham . The Rats were in the game for ~ long time in what was an unfamiliar surround : against Werribee . The Turtles had a lot of the pla i after quarter time in their match but were alway : playing catch up football after a poor first stanza Both sides will be keen to notch up their first wir for the season however the Rats might just sneak . iathome The final match sees Eley Park play host to the visiting Werribee. Coach Hook would have be extrmlyconerdaftheirsgamndwilb e looking for a much improved effort from his Sharks, However, the Werribee running brigade might have a bit too much in reserve and consequently help them record a 3-4 goal win . Press Correspondents : The F Section scribe felt a bit like the girl with Nana Mouskouri glasses at the school dance . Plenty of fish but just the wrong bait. Thanks to the Rats who did bother to send a report in . (B) 9555 0900 (Fax) 9553 3675 before 5 .00pm Monday .

( Late scores, other fines) Clubs were reminded, at the recent Secretaries' Meeting, of the absolute importance of phoning through final scores immediately a match concludes. Most Round 1 home teams were particularly tardy in regards to this requirement . Fines will be waived for Round 1 but will be strictly enforced from today onwards. For details of who to phone and when to phone please refer to display elsewhere in today's 'Amateur Footballer" .
