A SECTION by Jason Frenkel
n ther top round of games in A Section, and I owas lucky enough to venture out to Universi ty Oval on Saturday and witness the close one . It didn't seem that it would turn out that way at 1 \4 time as the Blues got off to a barnstorming start to lead by 6 goals at the first change. But credit to the Dees, they didn't lie down and some great forward play from the Mannix boys helped them back into the contest before a thrilling finish saw the home side fall in by 5 points . An 8 goal to 2 second quarter did the trick at the Junction Oval where the Redlegs put paid to a St . Bernards side brimming with confidence . McMullin and Topakis booted four goals each for the winners as Old Melburnians bounced back from their first round loss . Another side to bounce back well in Round 2 was Old Scotch . The Cardinals, already rocked by player losses over the summer, were further crippled by injuries to skipper Stuart Steele and the talented Jeremy Laird, but they weren't crying any crocodile tears last Saturday at Brighton Oval. Ten big goals to Aidyn Boyd and four from the returned Andrew Millar helped the Cardinals to a 26 point win as Wayne Harmes' troops signalled that they are still a force to be reckoned with . And speaking of forces, Old Xaverians continued on their merry way with a 29 point victory away to Old Haileybury . The Bloods managed just 0 .1 in the first term, and conceding a 38 point lead to the reigning premiers is never a smart way to start a match . Matt Bourke chipped in with seven for the winners . Sunday's Sportcover Match of the Day at Elsternwick Park was a pearler, and very revealing too. St. Kevins showed the form that has seen them jump their way through the sections in recent years with plenty of height around the ground and some useful on-ballers too with the likes of DoIlman, Ciavola and Olive in the ruck. They had Collegians on toast a number of times but the spirit of the Lions would not lie down, even with the injured Brock Mooney adding to their lack of height on field . PREVIEW St. Kevins host Uni Blues in a contest that pits two of A-sections in-form sides against one another at the narrow Glenferrie Oval . Jimmy McKinnon and Joe Sturrock impressed for the Blues last week and along with Slimmon, Maplestone and Staritski, the visitors have plenty of running power . St . Kevins will be looking to wi n

this one in the air, relying on the height of Wise, Fraser, Ryan and Olive (and a host of other taIls) up forward and aroun ground . But St . Kevins can be slick on the grc too, and I expect they'll edge out the Blues close one by 8 points . Winless Old Brighton have been in w chance in both of their encounters this seasoi have failed to come up with the goods wh counts most . Dale Tapping will be despera notch up a win at De La Sa lle this week bu D's at Waverley Park are always a tough pro tion. The battle between Kryzwniak and Swift wing should be good and look for strong shov from the Jackson 2 - Old Brighton's Ma Jackson and De La's Drew Jackson . De La Sal 34 points . Old Xaverians make the dreaded jou north keen to notch up their third win from t outings as they take on St . Bernards. How d( would Garry Foulds like to include a fit and f Nick Mitchell in his starting line-up to boost B's forward stakes, while Tim O'Shaughnessy be laughing at the pool of riches that make uF Xavs front half . Pundits say the reigning pren have plenty of gas in the tank and are yet to l, first gear, and for the sake of putting a smili David Burnes' face, I'm tipping Xavs by 45 po i The Bloods travel to Albert Park this wee take on a Lions combination desperate to notcl its first win . The ruck contest between Hilton Jefferson should be a beauty and the talei youngster Toby Van Der Veene might find hin pitted against the dashing Matt Armstrong . Bloods did well after a poor start last week and be keen to notch up their second win, but hungry Lioris showed enough desperation aga rising odds last week to suggest they will br through for their first win . Collegians by 18 po i Today's Optus Vision Match of the l comes from Camberwell Sports Ground where Melburnians face Old Scotch in what is important game for both sides . After ordin starts to the season, both teams returned to winners list in Round 2 and will be keen to c tinue the winning form . Ash Ross and C Kennedy will need to continue their good form the Redlegs, while James Guest will have his wi cut out for him against Tom Wilson in the ru Wayne Harmes will be hoping Boyd can k 速 THE AMATEUR FOnraci I Fa I

oth the promoted, North Old Boys, and the demoted, BOld Trinity . have started the season firing and both have good chances at continuing their winning sequence this weekend . REVIEWS NORTH OLD BOYS V . MARCELLIN North Old Boys avenged last year's C section grand final loss to Marcellin with a solid win at the Alex Gillon Reserve. NOB's got on top with a four goal second quarter and were able to hold off a courageous Marcellin comeback in the second half . Marcellin added ten goals in the second half despite finishing the game with fifteen fit players. THERRY V. MIiSOB MHSOB scored the only comeback win of the round to grab the points at Therry . Drew Fairchild dominated the air taking marks at will for MHSOB and Jayden Pertzel and Dave Skinner played well on the ball . Therry will rue this opportunity to win at home after gaining a four goal lead at half time better players included Carter, Gauci and Grocock. OLD TRINITY V. OLD PARADIAN S An eight goal first quarter at Trinity saw Old a ~ ad aet Paradians blown out of the contest . Th~Ol n ball division attacked the Trinity goal supo portunitesfortheTrintyforwards . In the secondd quarter Old Trinity consolidated its lead with soli defensive play mopping up Old Paradians thrusts forward. With the scores reading 9 .6 to 2 .5 at half time, and Old Trinity dominating general play a comeback appeared unlikely . Old Trinity put the game beyond doubt with a six goal third quarter although Old Paradians added some credibility to the scoreboard with a seven goal last quarter . MAZENOD V. ORMON D Ormond hit back hard after the Easter break with a convincing away win against Mazenod . The first half saw both sides dominate a quarter each, seeing the scores level at the long break. But after half time Ormond grabbed control of the game . Ormond's on ball the ball provided run and drive for Ormond carryin g from defence into attack . The Mazenod defenders all worked hard to stem the tide but to no avail . OLD IVANFIOE V. IVANHO E Ivanhoe had a comfortable win in the local derby opening up a large enough lead against local rivals Old Ivanhoe to avoid any repeat of its last kick of the day defeat in the first round . Ivanhoe s win was set up. through its dominance around the packs and onballers Old Ivanhoe persisted throughout and rallied in the third quarter, but were unable to make any substantial impact on the sizable target it had been given by Ivanhoe.
PREVIEWS pQARCELLIN V. THERRY PENOL A Marcellin were game in defeat against North Old Boys and shoul against Therry Penola . However with the po absence of forwards Jamie Phillips, Andrew Tregar and Michael Raravasills they will need to find othe scoring options . Therry have been competitive wit narrow losses and will be hoping a win is aroun corner. Marcellin by 15 points . MHSOB V. OLD TRINITY MHSOB got back on track with a win over T Penola . However this week they face the form team competition in old Trinity . MHSOB ruckmen ~ Capp and Roger McIntyre had a day out against I dominating the ruck, but will face the respectivel} ful and combative tag team combinatton of Ran and Shaughnessy . MHSOB will also need to think how they will counter Old Trinity on ballers who ra against Old Paradians . Old Trinity by 26 points . OLD PARADIANS'V. MAZENO D Old Paradians should get back on the winnir against Mazenod at home . Although the Old Para defence has conceded 40 goals in two games a Mazenod can get enough of the ball to its key fon Ballenger and Fisher they could be in with a chano Paradians by 24 points . ORMOND V. IVANHOE Ivanhoe face a tough trip to the Gunn Reset meet Ormond. Although only two rounds have played, Ormond's narrow loss to Old Trinity and prehensive win over Mazenod looks like strong Ivanhoe looked good against Old Ivanhoe at time : will have to play four quarters if they are to chal Ormond at home . Ormond by 30 points NORTH OLD BOYS V. OLD IVANHO E North Old Boys dream start to its return to B s< looks set to continue at Elsternwick Park agains Ivanhoe . North Old Boys appear to have a numi goal scoring options and a fleet of running playen should give them enough bite around the packs tc the points . NOB's by 27 points.

C SECTION by Russell Gould
rather one-sided round last week, all victories by more than four goals, and all winners coming fro m south of the South Eastern freeway . It was also a bit of a sort out round, seeing just which teams got a lucky first start win, and which teams actually look the goods . We are still left with two winless teams, and both have tough clashes this week . But everyone else has a victory, with some looking just a little more convincing than others . REVIEW St .Bedes Mentone reversed their ordinary first round showing, accounting for round one's big winners St.Leos by 82 points in perfect conditions at Mentone oval. The Tigers seized control in the first quarter and through strong running kicked four goals whilst keeping the Two Blues goalless . Their dominance continued in the second term but their large amount of possessions resulted in only 4 .6, meanwhile the Two Blues had kicked three goals to give themselves a little sniff . But the third quarter ended that, the Tigers running backline and slick on ballers feeding the forward line who added 7.8 to end the Two Blues chances . The Tigers added another 3 in the last, St .Leos adding just 2 behinds and their bubble had been burst, their streak ended at one win . For the Tigers Hayes was again good, as was Thompson, whilst MacGeorge kicked 10 goals . Best for the two Blues were Meehan, Burgess and O'Meara . Old Mentonians continued their good early season form, travelling out to Thomastown to defeat the Bears by 55 points. The game was essentially over by half time, the Panthers leading by 56 points after a solid 13 goal to 4 half. Thomastown improved slightly in the second half but only matched the Panthers goal for goal, and were never really threatening . The Panthers also suffered some major blows losing full forward Acreman and ruckman Carter before half time, both with injuries that look likely to keep them out for a while . Guyan Stroud though kicked 7 goals for the winners and with Solley and Brooks were their best players . For the Bears, Fellowes. Capeci and Grech tried hard all day . Beaumaris also made it two wins from two starts, defeating St .Kiida South Caulfield by 33 points at a sub-standard Sainters ground . Both teams were strong in the first term but the Sharks were able to exploit the Saints lack of firepower up forward and took a handy lead . The Sharks better team play continued and the Saints, sporting many new faces were competitive in the mid-field, but were unable to capitalise up forward . Beauy continued to wear down their opponents and got the win . Best for the winners were Hanrahan, Groves and Sherman, whilst for the Sainters, Gilmore's four goals and numerous possesions got him the BOG, and Astapenko and McGaw also played well.
Old Geelong grabbed their first win, I defeating the more --fancied • Bulleen / Templestowe by 27 points in the closest match o round at Elsterwnick Park . At the home of the t both teams fought vigourously for the first three e ters . The Bullants were missing scoring shots, bu' Oggers were unable to capitalise and at the last chz the Bullants held a slight advantage . But coming r with a slight breeze the Oggers rallied and finishe over the Bullants to post a good first up victory, sending a little message that they are here to play . Hampton Rovers added to Banyule's v defeating them by 45 points, moving the Rovers fourth position on the ladder, and leaving Banyule less with a percentage of just 57 . PREVIEW It'll be on for young and old down south as we 'Local Derby week' (said with a booming, deep, and a slight echo at the end) . First up Old Mentonians face off ag, Beaumaris at Keysborough. Both are undefeated it looms as a battle of the forward lines . The pant have lost Big Ads, but Guyan Stroud stepped up week with seven goals and could do so again. Sharks have a very potent forward line, but their field was matched last week by the Saints who s gled up forward . Both have defeated Thomastown the Panthers did it away. Old Mentonians, wi Section finals experience should prove too stron the new boys, but if you can, I would get down ti the action. Hampton Rovers host St .Bedes Mentone game that always provides some fireworks . Bra₏ rights at that local nightclub everyone says they i go to are on the line, as is confirming a spot in th four. Hampton won last week, but you have to q utheop sitn, buditofrheTigrs, othil n a close one . The Rovers always step up for a derby, but I' cari t see them being able to outpl classy Tigers unit, and bragging rites will go the Ti

In non local derby matches, St .Leos host Geelong in what will be a game of guessing, guee that is if the bloke next to you is on your side or The jumpers are similar, but I don't think the sides If the Oggers play like they did last week they sh win .
Bulleen/Tempiestowe say hello to a strug Thomastown side. The Bears are also winless, e can't see their record improving as they go on the i Bullants just . Finally, the clash of the downcast, downcast B section that is. Banyule are really struggling need to find something fast to avoid this season fe

D SECTION by Ken Bremner & Tom Brai n uote of the week from that legendary scholar . QAndrew Headberry of the Monash Blues camp : "KB, you could be in danger of totally losing your credibility as a tipster. . .if you had any! He hasn't (TB) . Reply. . . . What credibility Andrew? - Never a truer word has been spoken KB!! ! REVIEW Monash Blues stifled the game with a second stanza blitz of 12 major to zip to go into the shed with a lead of 100 points to 1 point . St . Johns had no answers for the Blues centreline and rock solid defence . University Blacks were totally overwhelmed early doors by Whitefriars' fast accurate disposal and great finishing . To the credit of the Blacks they at no stage threw the towel in and at least made a contest of every issue . A very good away win registered by Aquinas against a hardworking St. Pats Mentone at the Patterdome . Aquinas basically controlled affairs from the first bounce to run out convincing winners at days end . The Parkside v. Southbank game had a little of everything and a bit extra . Parkside quick out of the boxes, Southbank reeling them in and then looking winners, only to see the resolve of the Parkers swing matters their way late into the last quarter. Just short of 30 seconds from the final siren a goal to the Bankers tied matters up . Salesian won a tough encounter against a lethargic AJAX . The Jackers held sway in a low scoring match right up to three quarter time before Salesian picked up the tempo and booted 5 match winning majors in the last 12 minutes of the game . No report received on the Old Essendon Grammar v. Yarra Va lley Old Boys game, however going on the final scoreline and narrow victory to the OEG's, matters must have been very tight throughout the entire match . Disappointing result for the Yarra's at their new home. PREVIEW Monash Blues v . Yarra Valley Old Boys - KB has resurrected that credibility and sensibly selects the Blues to win convincingly . Home ground advantage coupled with great confidence are ingredients for a 36 point victory . TB must agree here, Yarra Valley down in form and confidence will struggle against the Blues whose early performances have made us all sit up and take notice . Blues will keep the Professor happy today .
Old Essendon Grammar v . Parkside impressed as KB is with Parkside for their g endeavour and never say die attitude, I i towards the OEG's given their advantage at in and the fact that this is the Red Devils first g< away from Pitcher Park . OEG's narrowly b; points . Disagree here KB, Laurie Zarafa has Devils playing excellent football at present i they are fired up to beat the OEG's for the I time and this will be all the incentive they nee~ get them home . Southbank v. AJAX - The Jackers have r played out 2 very low scoring games which s gests to KB that they have a solid defence but n imal scoring power . The Bankers appear to h an edge in scoring ability and at Yarra Park selected to win a close encounter by 13 points .' draw law week will do the Tigers more good tl harm, and i feel they will be a different side to but they must play the entire four quarters . Bu home I agree with KB and select the home sidf a good hard game . Salesian v. Whitefriars - Looks the matcl. the round and the rampant Whitefriars will tested to the limit by a confident Salesian. Put on the statistic of 2 wins against I win and known scoring potential of Whitefriars, KB gi the nod to the Friars by 19 points . Salesian wo have been buoyed by their fighting win last wt but the Friars are hot and in good touch at moment and even away from home and they h ; the momentum and fire power to keep going. University Blacks v . Aquinas - The Bla( will be pleased to be back on home territory, in ever KB reckons that this won't be enough them to outgun an accomplished Aquinas ou who, even in their first round loss, were able score heavily, something the Blacks can't lay cla to . Aquinas by 40 points . Whilst not being tota confident about this Uncle Ken, I think the Blac early form has been too bad to be true, and eN though the Bloods won last week . I'll tip a mu upset and go with Dr . Harry's boys . St. Johns v. St. Pats Mentone - Two tea yet to register a win, hence you've got to ana13 the best of losing form . Having done that, KB s des on the Patters to break their duck and I home 14 point victors . A form reversal by the Jo

Knitwear r en in doubt go for the homeside, that's my theoy and it worked 5 out of 5 . REVIEW Chirnside Park over Glenhuntly, Power House just over Elsternwick, Old Camberwell smashin g Swinburne and Peninsula rolling St . Mary's as well . PREVIE W at home with Glenhuntlp to take on Elsternwiek both sides coming off a loss this game is vital for bot h sides to remain in touch with the four . Last week sawr Glenhuntly struggle away and Elsternwick fight on fo everything they had but just missmg ~l nrl adv l torm nas uICU - _u - -- -tage and a little more around the ground should get th e four points . In the mateh of the round and the battle for th e r Old Camberweil take on Powe s Ron WOOtten Trophy . This should be a craeker, both side House at home undefeated and going well . At home Old CamberweIl will be more confident but Power House generally travel pretty well, In a game that will go right to the wire, I'll go for a bit of an upset and tip Power House in what could turn out to be a real shootout between the forward lines . . Both Swinburne do battle with Caulfield at home with a win each and Swinny playing at home . Perhaps this k not surn~u>~ id be to be finding form, but they will not want to take Swinburne lightly . However, in the end Caulfield by 4 or 5 goals . Oakieigh v . Peninsula• the Crushers will be desperate for a win but the Pirates seem to be travelling pretty well at present . At home the Crushers are a four goal better side but today they will need to be about an 8 goal better side . The Pirates should win this one well and slump Oakleigh even further. . In the final game . Chi rnside Park take on St . in what should be another homeside victory 1Vtary's performing otherwise the St. Mary's really need to start season might slip on by. As mentioned a couple of weeks back Chirnside's home ground advantage should prove to be a stumbling block for many thi s season and again this week for St . Mary's.

'n the first issue of the 'Amateur Footballer' for . this year, Phil Stevens issued a call to arms over the potential elimination of the VAFA as an AFL draft source . This is a matter affecting all Amateur footballers and Clubs . If the VAFA is to be relegated, as allegedly discussed in high places, it will affect us all, equally in E White as in A Section . If the AFL want to slavishly emulate the NFL, then why axe the closest thing to the American Collegiate System in Australia, which is the VAFA . Only two rounds played and already there are only two undefeated teams . Kew and Old Carey have hit the ground running, but don't be deceived into thinking this will be a two horse race . The preEaster start caught many teams unprepared and there will be some big improvers over the next few rounds . LAST WEEK La Trobe went down by the thinnest of margins to UHSOB, in a ripper of a game. Phil Moon and Andy Willis excelled for the Red and Blacks . The Cobras finally justified my faith in them with a solid win over a far from disgraced Reds . Kew were pushed all day by a very determine d Central in another good game. Whisper O'Sullivan, the Shannons, and Andy Siwka stood out for the Yarra Boulevarders . North Brunswick overcame a dogged Old Westbourne, despite some average goal shooting. North's Mick Sorletto and Abe Kyriaszis starred, with Dean DeMorton also running into form. The Warriors improved enormously over Easter, with top games from Leon Fairfield and Glen Robson . Williamstown CY's and Old Carey staged a great battle for three quarters, before injuries shut down the CY's and the C's took over in the final term. CY's captain, Cook and Arron Mackley were brilliant all day, while Joel Daniher and Jason Woods were two of the C's many contributors. THIS WEE K UHSOB host Bulleen Cobras in an interesting match up. The Green and Browns will improve with every outing and with handy players like Stevens and Talarico will give a good account of themselves . However the Cobras, with Clements in
fine form in front of goal, and star veteran Wayne Olney still showing 'em how. 速 will be hard to beat today, and they should win 2 or 3 goals . Fitzroy Reds at home the the powerhou Kew, will have their work cut out . Kew have tale to burn, with newcomer, Sheehan, proving a hari ful, and Rick Pulverenti in great form, it's hard see the Reds being able to contain them . The vi tors should romp home by 6 or 7 goals . Richmond Central an d Old Westbourne v be a good game . The Warriors are starting to pul together, and their one on one style will pressu the Centrals . The latter though will have too mu marking power for the Warriors to counter at tI stage and with the Shannon brothers and An Siwka playing well. Centrals should win by 2 or big ones. North Brunswick and Williamstown CYB renew their traditional rivalry . North get beti with each game, with Sorletto starring a ; DeMorton and the Tirchetts picking up the pa( will be very hard to beat at home . CY though, we like rockets last week, with runners, Beckwil Cook, Gilmartin, Witham and Dervan providi loads of drive . A toss up this one. I'll go for the C' by 1 or 2 goals. La Trobe University tackle Old Carey, a should be at full strength for the encounter. T Trobers always take a couple of weeks to set into a new season, and will be looking to open th account today. The C's are sticking closer to Gle Taylor's game plan, although it was an unfound rumour that he was seen smiling recently, and ii be very hard for the Trobers to toss . The t should win an entertaining game by 4 or 5 goal Reserves victors should be : UHSOB, Ke Central, Williamstown CY's and Old Carey . Wat Mick James' UHSOB boys, their going to be tou to beat for the rest of the season . Correspondents, the Monday numbers e 9547 9144, FAX 9547 7764 or if you prefer, 98 1425 on Sunday or Monday nights .

-"hilst the honourable C Section scribe was pondering the complexities of marathon runners , another vexing question raised its head . Why did they never bring back the theme music from the 1970's footy replay? You know the one, dant da dant da dant etc . It simply hasn't been the same since . REVIEW F Section results are proving difficult to follow as the season continues to unfold . The Sharks hit back hard after their poor first week performance with a four goal win over 1,7erribee, whilst the frequent flyer points might come in handy, Werribee will have to get used to travelling in chasing these elusive away wins . The Gryphons continued their good early season form over West Brunswick and now sit at two for two. Conversely the Westies are yet to register a win and will be looking anxiously ahead for the opportunity . Syndall Tally Ho overcame the Hawks in a close one, which was a good tribute to Amateur football . A real morale booster for Jeff Binghams' boys . The final game saw Eltharn register a big win at the expense of the Rats. Gary Forsyth must be in the process of purchasing some yellow ribbons to ensure precious home ground advantage is not given up easily next year. PR II;VIEBd Game one sees the Gryphons host the Hawks at Caulfield . The Gryphons go from strength to strength and will be looking for a hat trick of early wins . The Hawks were disappointing last week, going down in a game they could have easily won . The runners of the Gryphons will look to set up the game through the middle whilst the Hawks will hope for some better players returning from injury, and
to get better with some games under their belt. The Gryphons in
a close one. ~ The next game sees Syndal Tally Ho hosting thf ANZ Albert Park . The Rats have been on a tour o'~ ~: Melbourne in their first two games and will consid• er this almost a home game . The Sinners have be . Leg speegratly, podbvernuit einthmdlasbeirotpnwa r and it is expected that they will get the points a1 home this week. In contrast to the Rats, the Turtles have yet tc play away from home . A strong win last week h aseth onimt andheywilokfrthei r potent forward line to continue on a winning way . 9lerribee will need to ensure their running backs are onguard early to prevent an early lead and hope noted goal kickers such as Isaac and Harris can kick a winning score . The travel factor might just be too tough and therefore the Turtles should record back to back victories . Finally, West Brunswick will be looking to open their account at the expense of Eley Park . The old firm of Hook, Bozo and McLean will no doubt lead the way for the Sharks whilst the Westies will need to have their forward line functioning much more strongly than last week if they are any chance to salute the judge . Hard to go past the Sharks with a margin of no more than two goals meaning the residents of Parkville will get to hear one of the more inspired club songs. Once again, a very disappointing return from club correspondents. No doubt the correspondents are hard working club officials but five minutes of your time can provide great feedback for scribes, players, coaches and supporters alike . CLUB XVIII SECTION by Norm Nugent
esults in Round 1 were not as I had predicted i n 4 of the 9 games, which was a poor start to m y ,ippll,g season. SECTION 1 Once again Old Xaverians served notice that i11eV-will be a leading side as they scored a massive victory over 1997 third place getter . Mazenod by one hundred and fifty two points . Around the o round Mazenod did win control of the ball but many of their forward thrusts floundered on the rocklike Old Xaverian defence . Old Scotch opened with a narrow win by five points over 1997 runners up . Old Brighton . I do o,T :ct that as the season progresses each of these sicies will become finals' contenders . Orchard oratory became factually based when nen•comers, MHSOB recorded an easy victory over Therry Penola by ninety seven points . I will wait aud see how the new boys fare over the next few weeks before making a prediction on their fate in 1998 . Despite inaccurate kicking De La Salle proved too strong for St. Kevins, who went down by thirty seven points . Those with high hopes for improvement by Old Melburnians were not disappointed as the rejuvenated side doubled Collegians score as they recorded a thirty five point victory . The size of the Old `Selburnians will prove difficult for many of their opponents as the season progresses . SECTION 2 A fitter Marcellin finished too strongly for Yarra Valley, who were playing their first Club XVIII game . A half time lead of thirteen points was built into a victory by forty nine points by Marcellin, for ~vhom Frank Bianco, Matthew Mifsud and Mark O'Sullivan all played well . Yarra Valley had good players in Jeremy MacVean, Grant Kennaway and Tim Habben . Yes ladies I was very wrong because last season's premiers, Kew, proved no match for the unproved Mt. Lilydale, whose great accuracy took them to victory by thirty nine points . Parkside was another team to prove me wrong as the Red Devils proved too strong for Old E4ssendon, who went down by sixteen points . Inaccurate kicking and injury prevented Thornbury finishing closer than fifty points behind Monash Whites who will be satisfied with their results. k%_1 ._ . .__ . ._______ -
PREVIEW SECTION 1 Old Scotch, who do not travel well , journey to Waverley to meet Mazenod, who must improve on last week's showing. Nevertheless winning form is good form and so I select Mazenod . At home I fancy Old Brighton will prove too strong for MHSOB, for whom this match will prove a yardstick of their comparative strength . Despite their lack of success last season I favour Therry Penola to defeat St . Kevins, who also have no form to recommend them and who will be making the long trip to Moomba Park, which is unchartered territory to all sides! ! On last week's form De La Salle should comI fortably defeat Collegians . The big challenge awaits Old Melburnians today as they play the Old Xaverian juggernaut . I select Old Xaverians but a competitive display by Old Melburnians will be concrete evidence that they have improved ! SECTION 2 Two convincing round 1 winners meet at Timber Ridge when Mt. Lilydale visit Mareell in, whose home advantage will be largely negated by their unfamiliar ground . I expect a high standard game before Marcellin record a narrow victory . Kew have the chance to win over Old Essendon providing they have prepared better than appeared the case last Saturday . The unfurling of their 1997 pennant should spur Kew to victory. Near northern neighbours Parkside and Thornbury meet on Pitcher Park, where many a visiting team has suffered humiliation over sixty seasons! Despite Thornbury's improvement, I still favor a Parkside win. A fitter and wiser Yarra Va lley host Monash Whites at Bulleen Park . Despite the good efforts of the Yarra Valley players I expect the consistent Monash Whites to win this game . Please feel free to contact me on 9467 2857 by 4.00pm on Monday with news of your match . Thanks to those who did last week . Get Well: Paul Cutler, in his 303rd game with Thornbury, suffered a severe arm injury in the opening minutes of last week's game at Monash University. Paul has spent this week in Monash Medical Central and has been advised his injury will prevent him playing again until season 2000 . A win today by Thornbury over Parkside will be a great tonic for Paul. Continued on Page 4 1

REVIEW ~~~e weather prevailed as the season proper began, J~' with a few surprises to boot . SECTION 1
Xavs and Collegians stamped their authority on the competition with resounding wins, while Uni . Blues were soundly defeated by the Tonners . The OP's showed their form in '97 was no fluke moving to two wins, while the Bernards opened their account against the SKOBS . Stephens (OX), Jackson (UB), O'Niell and Dimer (OB) and Schmidt (CO) were amongst the goals, with the Bernard's Kavanagh, Evans and Borg prime movers in their important win over the SKOBS . SECTION 2 The Sharks and the Eagles drew, with Emerson and Marson key players for the respective teams on the day. The Friars remained undefeated, as do the OM's, with NOBS and the Blacks yet to open their accounts . The Tigers produced a brilliant second term (10 majors) to down the 01"s with the Wintles and Alford on fire. Mason, Efstathiou and Ladd excellent players for the Bloods in their strong win over the NOBS . SECTION ( 2) BLUE Xavs (2) and Blues fought out a tight battle, and with straighter kicking the Xavs could well have reversed the result . The Jackas held on against the 'Fields denying them of their first win, while Ballantine (7), Kuramato and Phipps for the OM's made sure the Monds would need to wait another week to break the ice. The High kicked the sweep against De La Salle (2), as did the Rovers over the Saints, with Thursfield and Doolan fine Saint's contributors . SECTION (2) RE D The Bullants and the Leos fought out a tight contest with McCrohan and Hodder outstanding for their respective teams . OP's (2) kicked straighter than the OGS to get their first points of the year, as did OIG's after having the bye in the Round 1 . The Valley hung on to defeat a gallant Redback team who well served by Sloan and Burke. while Fraser and Lloyd were key players in the Valleys second win . PREVIEW SECTION 1 Mazenod host Uni . Blues at home and will be smarting from last week's loss, however injuries to the Nodders and the end of Uni . holidays will signal the return of the Blues today . The Tonners will keep their undefeated record in tact against the D's, as to will the OP's at home against the SKOBS . The Bernards are always difficult to defeat at home as Collegians will find 38
out today, especially with Mount, Juegan and Taylor in fine form . The OC's wil l battle valiantly, however I cannot see the Xavs drol ping this match at home today. Selections : Uni . Blues, Old Brighton, Old Paradia w St . Bernards & Old Xaverians . SECTION 2 Marcellin host Old Scotch at Timber Ridge in a ecialmthforb s s . Old Scotch coming off a Jo should be too strong today . Whitefriars host Old Trinit on the rebound and with a strong home ground advan tage I expect the Friars to get home in a close one . Th Tigers and the OM's clash at Mentone, and Ncit] Wilson, Gooley and Birrell in fine form the OM's wii prevail, while Uni . Blacks will open their accoun against North Old Boys . In the final match of the rounn Beaumaris' home ground advantage should see then bring up their first win of the year against Ok Haileybury. Selections: Old Scotch, Whitefriars, O R Meiburnians, Uni . Blacks & Beaumaris . SECTION ( 2) BLUE Monash Blues and AJAX clash at Clayton in whal should be a great match . Both teams will be aware o1 the importance of a win here today with the Jackass favoured with a more potent forward line . Caulfield Grammarians will battle to hold down a rampant MHSOB with Taylor, O'Brien and Askew in fine form, as to De La Salle will have a battle on their hands as the Rovers appear to be in terrific form at this time of the year. St. Kilda Sth . Caulfield will give of their all against the in-form OM's but to no avail, and Ormond will need a lift from Stasiak, Ashford and Black should they wish to get their first points for the year . Selections: AJAX, MHSOB, Hampton Rovers, Old Mentonians & Ormond . SECTION (2) RE D Old Paradians (2) will take their second consecutive win at home today, when they clash with St . Leos Emmaus, as to should Therry Penola against Aquinas at Moomba Park with Stella and McMahon dangerous up forward. Old Ivanhoe will find Warringal a handful with the Redbacks' White and Hopgood in terrific form . while Yarra Valley will be clearly on top of the section come 5 .00pm after accounting for BulleenTemplestowe. Old Geelong have the bye . Selections : Old Paradians (2), Therry Penola, Warringal & Yarra Vall ey.
