PHIL STEVENS CHIEF EXECUTIVE

rMe VAFA's Executive Committee, the VAFA clubs and supporters join together OFFICER j this weekend to congratulate the VAFA Umpires' Association on the officia l „jv ning of their clubrooms, which will take place at a luncheon before this Sunday's first semi final . The building (pictured below), not only gives the umpires a home and a meeting facility . but it also offers a onderful incentive to prospective umpires thinking of joining the VAFA as an umpire .

On behalf of the VAFA, to the many who have been involved with the project . from the birth of the idea (1990) through to "coming of age" (this weekend) well done and may all VAFAUA members enjoy their new home for many years to come . Could I refer readers to Umpires' Corner in this publication for a detailed report on the Umpires' clubrooms written by Justin Toohey. TRIBUNAL AND INVESTIGATIONS DURING THE FINALS In regards to any matter arising from a round 18 or fmals match (except a Grand Final) which requires investigation . that may result in penalty, the matter must be heard on or before the Thursday following the match in which the matter is alleged to have occurred. On most occasions this date will be the traditional Tuesday evening tribunal night . but as the CEO . I have been given the decision making power to determine the time of the hearing on or before the Thursday following the match - if the Tuesday evening is not appropriate for all parties . This change from previous years is a result of a rule change approved by club members before this season . In regards to tribunal hearings, during the home and away season, if a reported player could not attend a tribunal hearing because of work commitments the player was required to provide a statutory declaration stating a) he couldn't attend and an outline of the reasons why: b) an account of the matter to be heard by the tribuna l Fro m the Desk continued on Page 5

A SECTION by Jason Frenkel

It twisted and it turned; inched and crawled ; it tickled and it teased and, for some, it traumatised and terrorised: but the A-section home and away fixture finally drew to a wonderful close last weekend to cap a memorable season . Old Haileybury earn this week's honourable mention for a stirring finish to an inconsistent year - the Bloods played some rousing football in its final two games to farewell an era that produced some of the side's greatest players. Simon Meehan will not be coaching the Bloods next year, and a number of senior players are expected to retire, leaving the club a daunting task if they are to maintain their position in A-section in the future. But after missing the finals cut and seemingly headed for a disastrous end to the season Old Haileybury rediscovered its passion to produce some exciting football and at least stamp its influence on the shaping of the four . With victories over the third and fourth placed sides in its last two games, and a convincing thrashing of St . Kevins some weeks ago, the Bloods will spend the summer pondering what might have been . And so too will St . Kevins . who at season's close were just 5% away from a finals berth . And they looked likely early in the year, but a long season took its toll on the SKOBS, and last weeks' game against Xavs was always going to be a head-ache. Tim Hart and the crew will be disappointed to miss out : St. Kevins have been quite insistent that nothing less than a finals berth would be sufficient this year, but they should be heartened at their efforts in 1998 - few sides promoted from B-section make much of an impaet, and most return quickly whence they came . Just ask Old B righton . who despite a much improved second half of the season . will find themselves back in B-section after just one year in the elite grade . The Tonners saved their best footy for late in the season, and given the strength of their core group of medium-size and on ball players . A-section can expect to see them again shortly. Co llegians will join Brighton back in B-section, drawing to a close a tremendous tenure as one of the most powerful amateur sides under the coaching of Leigh Carlson . Carlson won't be at the helm next year - the Lions and A-section football will be poorer for his departure - but its hard to imaging this strong club will be kept down for too long . A promising crop of talented youngsters are emerging from the Lions den, and they'll be keen to return to their premier division as soon as possible. De La Salle and University Blues make up the also-rans, confirming . like they did last year. that they might be good, but they're not good enough. On their day . the Blues played with all the fluidity of a raging river, and seemed capable of overwhelming anyone with their slick midfield work, while the Dees boasted

a playing list with some of the most polished performers in the competition . Unfortunately for supporters of these two sides, the last two years have I to see either capitalise on their potential, leaving e one to wonder at what might have been . FINALS TI ME

Of course, the focus today should not be or also-rans, but on the fantastic football that wi served up to punters today as the season pt begins . And what a match - an elimination between Old Melburnians and Old Scotch . If the two meetings between these sides are any g< today's clash will be an exciting struggle to the wii their first meeting this year, at the Camberwell SI Ground, the Redlegs withstood a final quarter I back from the home side to hold on to a slender I point win a low-scoring, but gripping, affair . Cardinals, of course, were merely rousing from early-season slumber at that stage of the year, ):• was a stronger Scotch side which led for most o day in their second encounter at the Junction i But a frantic finish and an errant handpass cons] to hand Old Melburnians a gift-wrapped. 4-point N ry, and, perhaps, just the slightest hint of a psych ical advantage for today's game. On paper . there is very little to separate thes< sides . Both are strong in defence and strong ir middle but the Cardinals may just have an edge ii forward personnel . Ellis and McMullin will have th of kicking a winning score for the Redlegs, but Top and Usienov can ease their load by chipping in some goals at ground level . There will be no shorta talent out on the field when the bell ring Elsternwick Park today. A strong chance of takinl the A-section best and fairest, Scotch defender R+ Price is worth the cost of admission alone - his rea of the play, judgement, and approach to the contes exemplary, and he possesses the most prodigious in amateur football. The Cardinals were ordinary week against the Bloods . the Redlegs likewise the, before : both will be keen to return to touch tc Punters with pace-makers beware - today's should be a heart-stopper. Cardinals by 4 points. [:J

he B section finals series is a case of the old versu s the new this year, rith debutants Marcellin an d North Old Boys and Old Trinity and Old Ivanhoe making up the final four. REVIEW Last round, Mareellin had to contend with sever e weather conditions and a persistent Ivanhoe combination before taking the points and the minor premiership . The Hoes were fired up for their last hit-out for the year and took the lead in the first half . New forward combination . Pace and Saunders . with some moments of deft improvisation, kicked three goals in the first quarter and the Ivanhoe backline led by Hull-Brown was closing down Marcellin spearheads Treganowan and Purcell . But the arrival of a severe hailstorm midway through the third quarter stung the Eagles into action . During the ensuing chaos which saw both goal umpires leave their posts and two players shelter behind a tree . the Eagles proved they are the 'hail' specialists of the competition . managing five goals by the end of the quarter to take a 23 point lead . Normality returned in the last quarter with the Eagles extending their lead in a dour last quarter to win by 31 points . Ivanhoe's vote count will be held at the Hoes' clubrooms this Sunday afternoon . Presentation night at Banksia Receptions on September 18 . Contact Reg Miles. MHSOB beat Ormond in what turned out be a playoff for fifth position after MHSOB grabbed a slender lead in the first quarter and continued to pull away throughout the game. Ormond kept up their pressure throughout the day but were unable to match MHSOB's more potent fonvardline . Ormond backmen James. Gilmore . Marnow and Egan all worked hard and McConvill played well in the ruck . MHSOB finished off a frustrating year with a win, with Saultry . McCully, Albergo and O'Brien amongst their best . Old Ivanhoe move into the finals as the undisputable form side, accounting for Old Paradians last weekend. Old Ivanhoe set up the win with a four goal second quarter . which set up a matching winning lead. Old Paradians were competitive around the ground but like most others who have played Old Ivanhoe in the second half of the year, found goals hard to come by. In contrast, North Old Boys had to fight all day to beta Mazenod and clinch their place in the finals . Mazenod made good use of a wind in the first quarter and kicked four goals in the first quarter with Horban playing well in the ruck and Hanley and Carter initiating fonvard thrusts around the ground . However. NOB's took their turn with the wind and grabbed back the lead kicking six goals with Jordan . Sleep . Collison and MikUmda all prominent . A dying breeze and a tighter NOB's defence kept Mazenod to just two goals

in the third quarter and NOB's maintained a two goal lead . The final quarter augurs well for the NOB' s

finals chances as they went on a goal kicking spr converting seven goals for the quarter to run out co fortable winners . Therry Penola caused the upset of the rou starting well and toppling contenders Old Trini Therry got on top early and by the end of the first t had moved to a five goal lead . Crotty and Barna iv, dangerous up forward, fed by Petrevski and their m fielders . Old Trinity never looked like reeling them only managing three goals for the day . Their bet players included Andrews, Heath and Phillips . PREVIEW NORTH OLD BOYS V. OLD TRINITY, FIRST SE FINAL, ELSTERNWICK PARK

The two combatants could not have had more i ferent home and away seasons with Old Trinity doi nant in the first half of the season and disappointinl the second half. Whereas NOB's have quietly gc about their business at the middle of the table ac mulating hard fought wins . The game promises an interesting contest bet-,v( the more free wheeling style of Old Trinity versus committed and more defensive North Old Bovs . Old Trinity at their best this year have bea opposition through their quality midfield set up z the dominance of Ramsden in the ruck feeding it main scoring options in Stickland and Heath . Opposing them is the competitions' second me, est defence, North Old Boys' band of classy runn players in Jordan . Sleep and Booth and a mu optioned fonvard line led by Collison and Mikunda. It is hard to split the teams with their head-to-hi meetings balanced at one apiece . Old Trinity erui ; home on their first meeting at the Gillon Reserve ti~ Stickland booting ten and in the second clash NO recorded a comprehensive win at Old Trinity . The form begs the question, which Old Trinity, turn up? At top form they appear to have too mt firepower for the North Old Boys, they en Elstermvick Park and have an exceptional fin record . On the other hand North Old Boys have g( form leading into the finals and a game plan t seems less likely to break down under the inte pressure of finals football. If the NOB's can break even in the centre conte and keep Old Trinity forwards under control tl should mark into the next round of finals action . North Old Boys by 21 points .

ylBzenod - congratulations to Chris Murray on ~ li~ illg his 200th game last week . Chris has played in t,tcmlerships in both seniors and reserves, is a grea t ub,nan and a player known for his hardness at the Good luck in your pursuit of 300 .

It was an absolutely shocking day for footy on Saturday, and unfortunately it was the start of ou r finals . Low scores were the order of the day in both the seniors and reserves, with a swirling breeze making goal scoring very difficult . But let's get into it . Review - First Semi-final, St . Bedes Mentone Tigers v Hampton Rovers.

As previously mentioned the weather was horrible . As the siren blew to start the match . the already swirling wind was joined by a brief hail storm, and the footy very quickly became a bar of soap . Players struggled to handle the ball with any confidence, the Rovers though used the kick first policy with effectiveness . The Tigers were handling it too much, pushing handballs to one another as the Rovers pressured them all the way . Few marks, if any were taken in the first term, and the quarter time scoreline of 3 behinds to the Rovers and one behind to the Tigers was evidence of the harsh conditions . In the second term though the Rovers again used the quick long kick to their advantage . They managed to get the ball inside their forward 50 more often and with less effort than the Tigers, and they put on three goals to one to take a very handy 14 point lead in to half time .

The third quarter again proved a struggle . The Tigers tried in vain to break the Rovers backline, and the Rovers did the same . All kicks were going wide thanks to the wind, and the ball spent much of the quarter on the wrong side of the boundary line . But when it was in play it was the Rovers were having the best of things . Their small men were winning on the ground, and one or two handballs and then a kick long was again their ploy . The Tigers were starting to cotton on to this . but again the Rovers physical pressure saw the Tigers rarely able to get a clearing kick away . The Rovers kicked another goal for the quarter and went in to the final term up by 22 points . The Tigers were going to have to kick at least four goals for the quarter to win the game, but had kicked only one to that point and so had to score early . They came out wanting to win, and started to get enough of the ball to give themselves at least a chance . But again they struggled to use their possessions effectively . A few positional changes got them on top and a couple of goals came to get them within 12 points . but once again the Rovers . as they had done for most of the day, won the ball out of the middle, got a long kick away, and their ground level players ran onto the skidding ball and put it through to get them clear again . The Tigers managed to outscore the Rovers in the last term, but they just gave them too much of a start .

In a game that lacked anything spectacular, but was an intense contest for most of th e day, the Rovers managed the conditions better and r out 15 point victors to advance to the preliminary fin and end the Tigers season. Best players for the Rovers were Hobson a Browne, who were two of the few players able to ta marks all day. McKellar who was the best small man the ground, and Stephen Anderson who did all it kicking in to the forward line. For the Tigers, Hayes was one of few who stood o Zakic was good down back, as was Giaquinta . Ry kicked 2 goals up fonvard and with Napier were Tigers only effective forwards . Rese rv es First Semi-final, Beauma ris v Old Mentonians . This was another low scoring affair, with only th goals kicked in the first three quarters of the mat Scrappy play was dominating, but again quick ki into the forward line were the way to go . At three qr. ter time the Sharks were in front. 2.8 .20 to the 0 1 .1 .7 . But it was the latter who made the early runn in the final term . They booted the first goal to get w in a kick, and then had a couple of more chances, were unable to convert . Beaumaris then hit back v three quick goals . easily their best footy of the matcl put the game out of the OM's reach, and they ran eventual 18 point winners . Preview - Second Semi-final, Beanmaris v Old Mentonians , First up lets hope the weather is better for this ( and if it is right, this game looms as a real corker . T two clashes during the year were great ones . First the 0M's got up by 10 points, and in the return m~ they squandered a huge early lead, the Sharks boo 10 goals to nothing in the final term to take a four victory. With that firm in their minds, and coming i huge win in the last round the 0M's look primed . Ad's has got his ton . and will be looking for more . also down forward Tony Bournon and big Stroudy 1 as keys . In the guts, 'Scratcher' Dart and Drew Si are having good seasons and will relish the open sp of Sandy. I saw them, demolish the Tigers in the round . and it was hard to find a passenger . But I that game I see three players as the OM's keys . " need a key defender to hold at least or.c of '' ..; S . Sir, udy's hforwads,nItikK hemIan looked ominous, and if he can last the game, will I a big influence . And in the middle Carter should d nate, and with first use of the ball, the OM's will be I to stop .

But the Sharks have been the benchmark all year . are a well drilled, professional unit who have con<,,tently broken teams throughout the year . They can i,roiuce up to three key forwards that can demand a quality defender, and if the ball gets down there ,iough . will kick a lot of goals . They don't have a domiuant ruckmen, and rely more on winning the ball round the ground and using their quality skills to G c the ball fonvard . They too will be well suited to th e ;zces of Sandy, their home ground almost equal in <i .e, if not bigger. and so will be able to move the ball ,,;ilh good effectiveness. Pitts and Nish are crucial ball raers. and Vaughan is a quality defender who will get ,ne of the OM's big guns . These three, as well as %tahmoud and Mills up fonvard are keys to this sides ,uccess . and will all need to be going if the Sharks are 10 get the win . If you heard me on VAFA radio last Sunday morn111d, I tipped the Sharks to get up. But as the week has s,ne on my mind has shifted from one to the other . I am ,t hit worried about both team's defenses, but will stick ith my original feeling and tip the Sharks, who have at quality all year, building themselves up for the tinals. Reserves Second Semi-final - St. Bedes Mentone Tigers v Old Geelong This one will be a great match . Both clubs senior ~ides are out of contention, and so each will be at full ,Irength . but that aside . regular season form leads me to believe this will be a close affair. During the year the Oggers had the better of the Tigers on both occasions . but the combined winning margin was just 6 points . The Tigers played their worst game of the year in the sccond clash, and after being well down in the last term fought back to go down by just 2 points . The Oggers are tall, and that is probably their biggest asset . but also could prove their downfall on the big ground . The Tigers are strong at the ball, and move it well when they open the game up. They are the defending premiers . and after the closest reserves season in many a year managed to finish on top for the third year in a row . The O~gers will be confident, and rightly so . but I think the Tigers are a better side all over the ground, and will win and move within a game of back to back premiership success .

D SECTION by Ken Bremner Tom Brai n Preamble : Very trying conditions confronted all and sundry who ventured out to the spacious Monash University oval for Saturdays qualifying finals . whereas the eliminators on the Sunday at Central Reserve faired much better weather wise. Results from both days have tossed up an interesting situation whereby in both finals this week, list and 2nd semi's) the reserve grade and senior games will be contested by the same clubs i .e ., Whitefriars V Ajax and Southbank V Parkside . From this, one could glean that of the 12 teams which made up 'D' section these 4 clubs had the greatest depth amidst their ranks. Again . Tom and I wish all competing clubs the very best of fortune . Review - Qualifying Final (August 22 ) Reserves - Whitefri ars V Parkside . The 'Red Devils' will have most certainly departed the confines of Monash University thinking their luck had deserted them. Just couldn't convert economically enough in the 1st half, otherwise the game would have been as good as over. Some 16 shots to 7 to only lead by 2 pis tells the sad tale of woe . Left off the hook, the 'Friars' took their chances in the 3rd to put a winning gap on their opponents . Try as they might (and did) Parkside couldn't bridge the gap in the last, although some 5 minutes prior to full time with a full head of steam, they did get it back to near even stevens before Whitefriars steadied and put the issue beyond doubt . Best for the 'Friars' were Andrew Davis and Gary Johnson and for Parkside . Hogan . Warren & McCall .

Seniors - Southbank V Ajax . A game in which there unfortunateiv had to be a loser, in this instance Southbank, and I say that without any degree of bias . Officials of both clubs at the after match function . agreed that it (the match) delivered what it had promised, that being, on face value at least. probably the game of the finals . The pre match flip of the coin in which Ajax won and kicked with a hefty breeze, probably had as much to do with the final outcome as any other factor. All square at the long break, the 'Jackas' emerged from the sheds to find bright sunlight, no rain and more importantly still, a howling gale . To their credit, they took advantage and rammed home 3 quick goals to race out 21 pis ahead before the deluge and dark ominous clouds gathered . That margin down at 3 qtr . time and with a couple of crippling injuries, the 'Bankers' looked gone . Not so as it turned out . and after a frenetic start . Southbank commenced to reel in the 'Jackas' ever so slowly . to the point it looked a forgone conclusion that they would run right over the top of the Ajax combination . With just minutes to go. and with great pluck (yes! That is pluck) . the 'Jackas' forced a critical turnover and made the 'Bankers' pay the maximum for it . and then followed up with a great save on the goal line from what was a certain Southbank goal . Wash up was . that the siren

sounded soon after and Ajax had advanced to the 2ni semi with a hard earned 6 pt victory. For Southbanb, they live to see another day! Best for Ajax wer, Kalinski and Jeremy Wrobel in defence, on baller Danny Pat and Jason Wrobel along with ruckmal Greg Rozenberg. Special mention also to David Mark for an outstanding last qtr in defence . For Southbanl ; none better than the 'Tractor' Kip Walford, Dales 'Nudge' Perry, 'Pudda' . 'Easty' and Johny Mc, as wel as the Lovechild who contrary to popular opinion dii a great job in the back half. Elimination Final (August 23) Reserves - Monash Blues V Southbank Although the conditions were better than or Saturday it was a great game very much controlled b, the wind. The Bankers had first use of it and althougi not fully capitalising were able to establish a lead tha they were able to maintain all day . Both sides seeme( to play better kicking into the wind but in the end i was the physical pressure and attack on the ball b, Southbank plus the ability to hold the Blues talls tha got them home . Steve Garlick and Phil Herridge weri fine onballers. Bubba was impassable across hal back when the pressure was on, and big Arra had ; telling effect when moved into the ruck as the Banker, live to fight another day . Seniors - Parkside V Monash Blues Monash started confidently and with a taller an( faster combination outplayed Parkside in the lst qtr The 'Red Devils' played like a nervous outfit and fum bled and stumbled and weren't able to convert thei . scoring opportunities . The 'Ashes' with a slight breezi ended the qtr . leading 3 - 2 - 20 to Parkside 0 - 3 - 3 The game evened up slightly in the 2nd qtr . will Monash not playing with the same level of confidena as the Ist, although still running strongly . Parksidi edged their way back into things but were wasteful ir disposal ending the qtr. trailing by 10 pts, 4 - 6 - 3( to 2 - 8 - 20. A big 3rd qtr . by Parkside by closing down thi Monash quicks . playing tight and winning the 'hard ball at every contest . Ryan at full forward for the 'Re( Devils' had a stellar term booting 4 majors .

In the last. Parkside continued on in the marine , they had in the 3rd and Monash wilted as the 'Devils showed great spirit to tough out a 9 pt victory. Best fo. Parkside were McCall in the ruck, MacNamara on th( ball and Ryan who finished the day with 6 large . Preview ( 2nd Semi Final) - August 2 9 Seniors - Whitefriars V Ajax -(KB) My major con cern for the 'Friars' is match hardness . Coming off < loss in round 17 they then . with all due respect to S

.~'-- . . .---- -

oims, had a pretty soft game, then a weeks rest and o s to tackle a hard and fit combo . Adds up to about weeks without a 'pressure cooker' type match . I'll my critics (no doubting that!) but I'm punting on lie 'Jackas' to get in front early, stay in front, enter he GF the easy way and earn promotion all in the one ,lay. Ajax by 4 goals . (TB) As long as the Jackas can mentally prepare themselves for another tough game I ilzink they can take the points again . There is no doubt that the Friars will have the fresher legs but I ~?ree with KB that the lack of a real tough game coul d 7gainst them, as AJAX will be primed as they don't come any tougher than last week, that does not mean it will be easy but it's AJAX for Brain . _ Reserves - Ajax V Whitefriars - (KB) Different scenario here for the 'Friars' and I also reckon the_v're d1e best rezzies team going around at present, mind ~,ou they can't afford to be as sluggish as last week . The height and versatility of Whitefriars gives them ,reater flexibility than their opponents today in Ajax . in what should be a pearler of a game, the 'Friars' to advance to the GF wining by 3 goals . (TB) One would ;magine that any sluggishness was caused by the soft last round game for the Friars which will be out of their system now as last week was anything but soft . This week the ball is in the other court and it may be the Jackas who will be underdone . Both will have a sprinkling of senior players to make it a good game so in a toss up TB selects Whitefriars . preview ( 1st Semi Final) - August 3 0 Seniors - Southbank V Parkside - (KB) The form card between these 2 teams reads a draw and a win to the 'Bankers' . Neither side will field their strongest combination as a result of injuries, however, whenever and wherever these 2 protagonists take to the field in combat . you can be assured of a great game . The Red Devils' probably shade Southbank for 'talls' whereas the 'Bankers' can possibly lay claim to having the better brigade of on ballers and mid field personnel . Given that this is the ease, then the forwards of Southbank may just have a few more opportunities to post a winning score . In an anticipated ripper of a game, Southbank by 2 goals . (TB) KB appears to have misconstrued his facts here as talking to the Devils personnel on Sunday they were only one away from their best and he returns this week with the fact they had a report free game they cannot be any stronger . Better check your sources KB!! Back to the game itself it promises to be another hard fought game between two evenly matched teams with similar styles . The Bankers were shattered with their defeat last week but should not be too disillusioned as it was really only the toss of the coin that beat them, while it took the Devils a while to shake off a determined Monash . Again it really is a toss of a coin but going on the years performance Southbank have been more consistent and have been able to claw their wav out of difficult situations and will do so again today . Reserv es - Parkside V Southbank - (KB) Had it not been for rank inaccuracy last week then the Parkside boys may well have been playing in the 2nd semi . However, that's not the case and today they take on their'98 nemesis in Southbank . The'Bankers' have rolled the 'Red Devils' in both home and away games and I see no reason for that trend to change today . With tongue definitely in cheek . Southbank by 1 goal . IM

TLJG A hA ATGi 1R FfV1TRAI I FR i QQ0 .

(TB) I think you are right here Kenneth the Bankers have the physical strength to match it with the Devils and they have the pacy onballers and midfielders to exploit any weaknesses Parkside may have in this area . Again it will be a tough pressure game of finals football with TB fully expecting Southbank to come away deserved victors . * Flynnies tips this week a re Ajax and Southbank . Press Correspondents : Fax to KB on 9850 696 4 (Email KenBremnerCa~access .net .au) or Tommy on 9265 8001 by midday at the latest on Monday following the game .

Southbank - congratulations to Neil "Bubba" Wallmeyer on reaching 200 games today. "Bubba" joined the club in 1988, and has been a very good player as well as captain, clubman and is presently serving on the committee . Congratulations on a very fine effort .

OFFICIAL O,', _-1 .'I ri OF UMPI E-3 CLUBROOM S This weekend is a significant milestone in the 7 6 year history of the VAFA Umpires' Association, with the official opening on Sunday 30 August of our clubrooms. built within the Grandstand at Elsternwick Park . These clubrooms are a magnificent enh ancement to the VAFA's facilities at the Park . having transformed the dilapidated, asbestos-ridden grandstand into a multi purpose function/ meeting room, kitchen . office and ancillary facilities that complements the existing administrative buildings . Whilst the building is on its own just bricks and mortar, it now houses the umpires' honour boards, photos, memorabilia and records, and is a tremendous social room and training resource for the umpires' meetings . The project had its origins in 1991 when the concept of the umpires having their own clubrooms was enthusiastically supported by the overwhelming majority of umpires . Translating that enthusiasm into reality is now complete . although the semi-complete rooms have in fact been operational over the last two seasons . It is fair to say that the project has only come to fruition because of the steadfast support by the broad membership of the Umpires' Association and the absolute commitment of key people within the Umpires' Association to seeing the project through . One of the earliest tasks was to convince evervone of the importance for the umpires to have their own 'home' and sense of identity aside from the traditional employer/ employee relationship with the VAFA . Fortunately our vision was shared by the majority of the VAFA Executive who recognised the importance of a strong umpiring body to the VAFA competition and the benefits that confers . In particular the role played by Philip Rowell (former VAFA Vice-President and Umpires' Association Life Member) to steer the concept through at Executive level needs to be acknowledged . No-one has contributed more to the building project than Wayne Hinton . "Chuck" has lent his professional building skills and managed the construction and fit out of the rooms since the first sod was turned in 1995 . He has done so on an entirely voluntary basis . and at some personal cost to his own business . It is deserving that Wavne . as current President of the Umpires' Association will join with Andrew LangfordJones as President of the VAFA to unveil the plaque to officially open the clubrooms . Other key contributors to ensure the project

9

maintained its momentum over such an extended od have been Stephen Hopper, Richard Simon Peter Keogh, the nucleus of the Building Committee . When obstacles were placed in the pa progress this group led front the front and ft ahead . Once construction began in 1995 there extraordinary contributions from a hard core of n bers giving of their time at working bees to refut the grandstand seating, terrace the hill and carr} works inside the building . Whilst the contribui were from numerous members, special recogn should be given to the support of Graham Thwa. Darren Dalgleish, Ron Lippold and Bren Corcoran to Wayne Hinton on the building side . Importantly, the clubrooms have been plan built and paid for by the umpires without any Cot or other government funding . Since 1991 membei the Umpires' Association have been making fmar contributions to the building project from the sacr of match payments, raising over $115,000 thro this method. That tangible commitment by umpires is now reflected in the pride felt in the c pleted work. In addition, the "Buy A Brick" camp~ raised a further $15,000 from the current and for umpires, supporters and a number of VAFA clut Banyule, Hampton Rovers, Marcellin, Maaer, Monash Blues, Old Bri ghton, Old Camberwell, Geelong, Old Paradians, Old Westbou rn e, Ormo St . Pats Mentone an d Yarra Valley - whose spe contributions are recorded on plaques inside the bu ing. The balance of monies was borrowed from exter sources ($50,000 from private financiers and 810 .( from the VAFA) with repayment of these loans requi over a five year period . A luncheon preceding the A Section First Si Final is being held to mark the occasion of the offii opening with around 130 guests expected to be attendance including Life Members of the Umpir Association, former Umpires' Coaches (I an Clela 1957-1962, Max Barker 1963 - 1971 . Kevin Mcli 1972-1976, Al an O'Neil 1977-1980, Neville Na 1985-1987 and Bri an Bulluss 1992-1996, current a former VAFA Executive members and staff (includl Alex Johnson. Norma Fullerton and Nan McTaggart) . "Buy A Brick" donors, and many of I umpires' supporters from the clubs (believe it or r they do actually exist!), whose work behind the scer on match days is always appreciated though oft unrewarded . The clubrooms are yet another illustration of Did our progressive approach to development of our great nd, game and puts the VAFA Umpires well ahead of any ial other umpiring body in Melbourne . The competition as ild- a whole is bolstered by a strong umpiring panel . and it nal is a fact that the recruitment and retention of umpires )00 is now more difficult than ever. It is our aim that the red clubrooms will be another attraction for those considering taking up the whistle or perhaps looking to move from another competition . Knitwear Well the finals have started so most of the teams (6 in fact) are watching and four have the privilege of playing. Those four on the weekend were Caulfield . Peninsula . Old Camberwell and Oakleigh . REVIEW In the First Semi Old Camberwe ll took on Oakleigh at Monash Uni, after a late venue swap . In an entertaining match for those who braved the windy conditions Old Camberwell seemingly looked ready to put Oakleigh away all day but couldn't. In fact Oaklei h in a 'never say die' attitude actually hit the lea~ with only a few minutes to play and looked like snatching a victory, but as threatened all game . the Wellers tall and classy forward line grabbed a few of their opportunities and kicked truly and ran out eventual winners by 16 points . So Camberwell into the Preliminary final and Oakleigh the Pub . To Oakleigh, well done on a great year. Second semi final . played on Saturday out at the 'Old Waverley VFA Ground' with the winner straight into the Grand Final (and D Section next season) was played between the two best performed sides of the season . Caulfield Grammarians and Peninsula Pirates slogged it out in some (at times) terrible weather conditions in what turned out, on the scoreboard anyway. to be a fairly one-sided affair even though it was rather low scoring. Caulfield with superior players all over the ground ran out winners by 40 points and have gone straight into the Big One with a weeks rest . As for Peninsula . they have been left licking their wounds for a week in preparation for this weeks Preliminary Final . PRELIMINARY FINAL We have a confident Camberwe ll taking on, what must be a concerned Peninsula Pirates outfit. Why do I say concerned? Well recent finals history says the Pirates don't fare all that well, having played in the past 3 campaigns and still haven't won it. As for Camberwell, well they would be brimming with confidence, their forward line seems to be getting back to some resemblance of early on in the season and the rest of the 'motor' is starting to purr . So my tip is Old Camberwell . on the grounds that they seem to be hitting top gear at the right time of the year, whereas the Pirates, who mind you don't give them away totally . seem to be lacking a key forward to seal the big games . Peninsula's on ball division is its strength . so if Camberwell can shut down then their own forwards 22

THE

AMATEUR

should be able to kick a winning score . In the wash up Old Camberwell by 15 points in what should be a cracker. MAGOOS First Semi - Peninsula in the dying mome the game snatched victory and promoted selves to the Preliminary Final at the expei Oakleigh who battled well all day . Second Semi - In somewhat of an i Caulfield beat an undefeated Camberwe ll in ably the upset of the season . So Caulfield uii granny along with their ones . This weeks preliminary final is bet Peninsula and Camberwell , with what I feel v a great game with Old Camberwell's all strength and ability to win out . The Wellers by 32 points . Corresppndents : fax to Craig Richardsc Mondavs on 9682 9176 .

Peninsula OB - congratulations to Mi Dentry on reaching 100 games today. "Red' been dominant across half back for many sea his high-flying marks and evasive skills the s out features of his game . Also to Brett Cook plays his 50th game . A quick, gutsy midfielder always manages a goal or two each game . 째Cc is an important part of the senior team.

QUALITY INSURANCE AT A SPORTING PRICE

n all my five decades of involvement with footy of various codes round the world . never have I see n the numbers stripped off a scoreboard as they were during the partial eclipse squall at Camberwell Sports Ground last week . One second we all knew what the scores were, the next it was anybody's guess . And Munners was giving the scoreboard attendants a rev up for having insufficient numbers after the event, when the poor young buggers didn't even know where half their plates had blown to!! God I love Amateur Footy, it's ten times better than napalm in the morning! ! SECOND SEMIS : CAMBERWELL SENIORS

The C's prevailed over Central in a game that had everything; gale force winds, rain, flying scoreboard numbers . a laryngitic siren sounding like the warble of a basso profundo magpie, a minor solar eclipse . 6 freezing umpires, and 36 blokes in frenetic pursuit of a piece of liberated leather with no intention of being captured . Unfortunately, the conditions spoiled the game as a spectacle and rendered gaining possessions something of a lottery, let alone effective disposals . As it was, the C's broad spectrum of goal kickers each used their infrequent opportunities to greater effect than their Central counterparts, and this was a key factor in their win . The day was a defender's delight, and the best work of the day was done by the backmen of both sides ; Dave Holt, Glen Porteus, and Mick Newton for Central, and Matthews, Daniher and Oppy for the C's . Merv Shannon worked strongly round the ground, as did Whisper O'Sullivan . RESERVE S Kew looked good against the C's, beating them for the third time this season . The K's won the game in the third term with a good effort into the wind, and by more committed work out of the centre throughout the day . Not pretty stuff to watch, but with Kalpakas . Giansante, Doumis, and Penesis leading the way, never looked like being headed once they took the lead in the second quarter. Farmer and Withing struggled hard for the C's. but it really was Kew's day . FIRST SEMIS: SCAMME LL RESERVE SENIORS

Kew zapped Uni. High with a big second term in which Rick Pulvirenti . Nigel King, Brian Cullen . Ang . Gencarelli, and Adam Felmingham ran riot, and the Green & Browns could find no counters to them . UHS looked a better side while Skinns was active in the ruck, but his absence on the bench for length periods robbed them of much needed impetus . Uni . High did have dead set all day goers in on-

ballers Talarico and ~ Cracknell, and Davidson at CHB , but they lacked th e overall forward setup to trouble what is ai strong defence lead by the flying FB, Brett Franchi, Greg Crimmins, Bradley and Co . UHS a long way off being disgraced, they did a good to hold the K's somewhat in the second half, Kew is a formidable outfit when they are on sc and this game they surely were. RESERVES Will iamstown CYMS beat UHS in as goo Ressies game as you'd see anywhere . There rarely more than a kick in it all day . 16 mini into the final term UHS was a solitary point up, levelled at the 18th minute, and Brett Hann pop through the winning goal for them just prior to siren . The game was .a credit to both clubs and coaches . Abbott (UH) and Greguet (CY) - at 1 that's who I think the CY ruckman was, after 'jumpers locked in the dry cleaners' sage, I'm too certain of anything! - staged a terrific conte : the ruck that went on for the entire match . Sh Lubic on his wing, Brett Wouda roving, and N O'Flynn at FB had very good games for CY . As t have been all year, the Uni . High Ressies wei very even bunch, and their efforts were apprec ed by all spectators .

PRELMINARIES SENIORS Richmond Central tackles Kew, and let's h the weather gives them a break for this match . half decent conditions the football standard of game will be nothing short of sensational . E sides have got freakish goal getters like F Pulvirenti for Kew, and Paul Byrnes at Cent Both sides are well endowed with more convent al forwards such as King and Bell for the Br oandSiwka,MervShano, dWatersofCn t The respective backlines are full of crea rebounders, Brett LaFranchi and Greg Crimn are as fond of a charge through the centre, as Cl Shannon and Dave Holt never hesitate for Cent The duel between O'Sullivan, Bvrne . Porteus . Andonopoulos, and Kew's engine room Gencarelli, Dimasi, Cullen and Felmingham wil a ripper, and a key element in the final outco Kew look like having the fullest selection list the had all season, so their home and away recon not an accurate indicator of their present capac However. Central have skill, depth, and maturit equal measure as their opponents, and they sf to match up well against the K's . Tim Pontefi

,iid Serge D'Angelo have more moves than a moondliner's liquor still, and will undoubtedly use all of i1lc,n . Don't be surprised if additional time is t~quired to decide the winner . I think Central will ,ake it out. Don't be surprised if I'm wrong. again!! RESERVE S The C's confront CY and will need to lift their ~,mle if they are to match the hard running unit cilat did so well against Uni.. High . CY open their ,lmes at blistering pace, and seem to be able to keep it up for the duration of the game . The C's tu,dfield had an off day last week, and this put additional pressure on their usually rock-like defence. It's hard to see this happening two weeks running, and the C's should take a top game by 2 or 3 goals . f II~ESTON~E.' Old Carey's reliable defender Peter Drake plays his 100th game for the club today . Drakey has been a key member of a very successful Ressies outfit over the past few years and his loyalty and camaraderie is much appreciated . Well done Drakey ! Also the C's inimitable Chris 'Wizzer' Withington runs out for his 50th today. 'Sideshow Bob' and his talented left foot are now part of the Club's folklore . Hope you are with us for many more Wizz!

REVIEW SECOND SEMI FINAL

awthorn were able to defeat Monash in a highly H entertaining duel at Preston . Monash had the ascendancy early as their water tight defence led by Blandford . Roche and Davey continually turned defence into attack to give their fonvards opportunities . Gilchrist responded with a couple of goals but inaccuracy on the Gryphons behalf resulted in their lead being only three goals at quarter time . The Hawks gradually worked their way back into the game with Bourke proving a focal point up forward whilst S . Avery was working hard across the half forward line . Eventually they managed to take the lead nearing half time and went into the long break with a slight advantage. Some quick goals at the start of the third quarter to Murray and Bourke increased the Hawks margin to four goals and with the weather beginning to turn ferral that lead would provide difficult to reel in . An injury to Kilmister did not help the cause as he was an avenue to attack and it allowed P . Avery to attack through the midfield . The last quarter proved to be a struggle as the rain set in and scoring became difficult . Overall. Monash would have been disappointed with their efforts whilst still happy to regain the services of stars Rafaniello . Urban and Harrak for upcoming games. Hawthorn, still on the other hand will enjoy the week off to rest some aches and pains . FIRST SEMI FINAL

Syndal Tally Ho continued to confound the experts as they recorded a memorable victory over West Brunswick. The first half was a dour, low scoring affair in which neither side was able to cope with the gale blowing to the Sydney Road end . The Sinners went into the break with a slight lead . With ten minutes to go in the third quarter most people were asking whether the Sinners had done enough with the wind as they had only increased their lead marginally. The answer came with an emphatic burst of ten minutes of inspired football in which they slammed on five goals to put the game almost out of reach . The Westies have had a habit of producing stirring last quarters but despite threatening at times to overrun the Sinners, it all proved a little too late with the Sinners going on to record a great win . They were best served by the pony tailed wonder. J . Rutter as well as 'Sugar' Joy. Christiansen, and Ertan . The Westies best included G . Heppell who was brilliant across the half back line . D'Andea and Hector Hamilton . The loss of Angus Hamilton through injury before the game was devastating for the vanquished as they sorely lacked his smarts around the ground . The Sinners live to fight another day while West Brunswick settle in to support their reserves premiership battle. 30

PREVIEW PRELIMINARY FINAL

The two early season pacesetters clas h in the cut throat penultimate game when Monash take on Syndal Tally Ho at Brunswick . Syndal have been the side that most pundits had written off coming into the finals but their workrate in the first semi final w asecondt ersultingWesBrunwickostan . ly being under pressure. The Gryphons will no dou btargehmidflonceRutrasbigh e key element to the Sinners success and he can expe . The Sinners capcAndyTolgstfwhimcely . tain, Sugar Joy, should also be paid attention but t hGryponsaelikytoawHehringto playhi ; own game in the midfield as he is a potential match . winner . J . Ertan was also good in the midfield for Syndal and will not be overlooked by the Gryphon ; brainstrust in their pre game preparation . Monast sprung a surprise last week by starting captain Le( Wells at CHB and it worked well with Wells able to pro vide more drive from defence . They may not go thE same way this week as that would result in a heigh mismatch as the Sinners man mountain . C . Cachia i: a big target at CHF for the Sinners . Consequently Well; may revert to a midfield role this week . The Sinners dc not employ too many tags and this might prove costb as the Grvphon midfielders are potent . The respective forward lines were the most damag ing during the year. Gilchrist, Leeton and Kilmister an a difficult combination to match up on as they posse, skill . height and pace between them which mos defences are pushed to match up on . The Sinners alitemornCachifteroupb h likes of Beckett . Hannemann and Toce can also b, relied upon to kick some goals . The Gryphons backline was the best throughou the year and with the likes of Roche, Blandford, Dave and Rafaniello it is little wonder . The Sinners back ha1 is a little more dour but can't be underestimated Christiansen and MacFarlane are both one touch play ers and their rebound will be vital . Monash did not finish on top for nothing and wi be out to improve on last weeks showing but won't go it all their own way . However they should have enougl in reserve to win and advance to the GF .

RESERVES West Brunswick advanced straight into the GI after running over the top of Monash . With the possi bility of players coming back from the ones they pose ; real threat . Eley Park made it 11 out of 12 when the accounted for a disappointing Hawthorn Consequently Monash take on Eley Park and with full list to choose from the Sharks might be able to go over the line .

1' STI1 ® THINK TALL Do you want to get rid of those nagging back aches, neck aches, headaches, shoulder aches or leg pains ? Well all these may be caused by bad posture ! If you have that pug neck with your head protruding forward on your neck, if your shoulders are too rounded and you walk around with a pot belly and sway back - don't despair. Fixing your or your children's posture is easier than you think . It's all a matter of muscle balance and most of us don't have it . As a start try to imagine getting pulled up by a strong string from the top of your head, then squeeze your shoulders back, put your feet apart at shoulder width, relax your knees and tuck in your bottom . You can see it's really simple . Now you only have to think about maintaining posture most of the day !

Winning Edge Presentations

111 SECTION CLUB by Norm Nugen t

wo high standard matches entertained the large crowd, who attended last Sundays Grand Finals . Although in each match the favoured team triumphed, the premiership was only earned after spirited opposition was overcome . SECTION ONE

Old Xave rians are premiers and champions of the Section . This worthy feat was accomplished only after the 'Crocodiles' had struggled for three quarters against the quality opposition provided by De La Sall e . De La Salle threw down the challenge to their opponents . with a goal scored in the first minute of the match . Their jubilation was short lived as Tim O'Sullivan replied for old Xaverians within two minutes. First quarters honours went to Old Xaverians . who attacked and kicked another three goals while De La Salle could only manage one more goal for the quarter. At the first change Old Xaverians held the lead by thirteen points. Again De La Salle opened the second quarter with a quick goal and for good measure Shane Rudd kicked another. Old Xaverians thus held the lead by one point : a state which continued until the twelve minute mark when a goal gave Old Xaverians some respite . It was short lived however as De La Salle kicked two more goals as the quarter neared its finish . Old Xaverians . sensing their danger attacked only to see the De La Salle led by Steve Lasko stand firm . Honours in the second quarter went to De La Salle, who held a four point lead at its conclusion. Old Xaverians regained the lead early in the third quarter before De La Salle snatched it back when the 'Crocodile' defenders failed to man up . Another goal to De La Salle gave them a nine point lead half way through the quarter. De La Salle persisted with their efforts before a late goal by Luke Hardwicke reduced Old Xaverians three quarter time deficit to two points . With the premiership on the line Old Xaverians surged fonvard where Richard King goaled to give them a four point lead . With the result hanging in the balance Paul, better known as "Jake" . Connors . entered the arena, ran forward, marked and kicked truly to give Old Xaverians a ten point lead When De La Salle went forward there was no player in position to attempt to score and so the Old Xaverian defenders were able to push the ball to the defensive outer wing . A late goal to Old Xaverians gave them a sixteen point lead . which they held until the final siren . Best players for the 'Crocodiles' included . Tony Landrigan in his one hundred and fiftieth game. Jamie Petroff. Michael Jones and veteran Richard Curtain . For De La Salle no one did better than ruckman Johnny Grey who was assisted by Justin Hosking . Greg McHenry and full back Steve Lasko . Congratulations to Old Xaverians on their out-

standing season and its ultimate success . To De La Salle, wel l done over the seaso n and for your efforts in making such a good cont the Grand Final .

SECTION 2 The first quarter was a time in which each settled into the tempo of the match and it was , in which little scoring was done. M onash Whitei a lead of nine points at the first change . The second quarter saw Kew surge ahead wit: goals . Monash did not have much of the play u ward but as half time loomed, Marco Tossav goaled to reduce the Kew lead to just five points . The third quarter saw over ten minutes i before either side could score . Finally it was I Tossavainen . who broke the drought by kicking < Two more Monash goals were unanswered befo Kenny snapped truly over his head to give M Whites a twenty point lead . The quarter seemec less and as the clock ticked over twenty eight m~ Mick O'Dea kicked a goal, which was the onl , score for the quarter . The last quarter opened with Kew facing a fot point deficit . As in the third quarter scoring was mal as each team struggled to overcome fatigue < gain a break on the outer . Kew scored the only g the final siren was near . Monash Whites valiantly on to the lead, although they could only add four scores for the quarter . At the final siren Monash % held a seventeen point lead, which gave them the premiership since 1975 . Good players for Monash were: Dan Matthew Riddle, Gene Van Der Zalm and u turned player, John Stoppa . Kew were well served by their stalwarts . Lucas and Ant Lawrence as well as by Johnsor and Corridon . With only one defeat of the s Monash are worthy premiers . Kew after overc early season setbacks, carried all before them to the Grand Final, where they strove valiantly to their 1997 title. It was indeed a thrill and honour to have the lege of presenting the premiership cups last Si For this I am grateful to President Andrew Lan Jones and CEO Phil Stevens . Selection: Hampton Rovers Section (2) Red Old Ivanhoe deserve to go in to today's match against Yarra Valley as favourites with a clearly stronger forward set-up and defence, although on the other hand the Valley are not bad in each of these respective areas themselves . With a win each across the season today shapes as a crucial battle at Trinity playing fields, where the surface should be second to none . Casano . Tvshing, Bell and Wapshot have been prominent players for the Valley in the two meetings of the teams . as to have Oates . Brannigan, Davis and Bernet for OIG . Both teams play strong attacking football, with both coaches knowing the importance of getting to the Grand Final after (1) final rather than (2) . All in all a great spectacle will take place with the OIG's favoured in a real close match . Selections : Old Ivanho e

re '6 _ J, -evtousty we nave tarxeu auout eoacnes uemg aware that there are many sources of information useful to

!lu• coach that are not exactly traditional. For example. uch sources as coaches of other sports, non-sporting „cople, etc. We came across a book recently called Train to Win in Real Estate' and found it to be full of iclcas and useful to coaches . A few appear below . We aongest that the book itself would make a useful co ach - companion . As an instructor. your task is not necessary to stand n front and deliver all knowledge to the group . Often ilic very best instructors are those who act as faeilitarors They merely become part of the group, helping its incmbers work together to achieve a common goal . New [rainers sometimes find this more difficult than standin ; up and giving a lecture . However, it is often of much more value to the group to have a group facilitator rather than a lecturer . BRAINSTORMING The simplest type of group activity is brainstorming, of which there are manv different varieties . In a brainIsrorming activity, small groups (usually of five or six , .~ople) are asked to write down everything that come s into their minds about a given topic.

Alternatively . a larger group may call out ideas hich are recorded on a whiteboard by the facilitator . Generally, they are given a time limit and asked not to make any attempt to criticise the quality of ideas . When the time limit is up. the ideas are simply counted . Members of the group are encouraged to develop innovative, even what may seem at first impractical ideas . Quantity of ideas is essential . Quality is not important, as a group should try to build upon previous Ideas, thus involving a continuous improvement as early ideas are developed. The most important thing to remember when using brainstorming is to explain clearly the problem or topic to be brainstormed. It should also be made clear why ideas are required . A major advantage of using brainstorming is that no equipment is required other than butcher's paper, pens and somewhere to display the ideas generated . Nor is it time consuming to prepare. A disadvantage is that it may confuse and frustrate if the ideas are not subsequently used . SWOT SWOT stands for Strengths . Weaknesses . Opportunities and Threats . It would be appropriate to use with staff if you were using your training as a way of determining the future directions for vour comoanv/club .

You can use a variety of brainstorming technique s for getting the initial lists of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats . In a SWOT, group members list all the strengths of a company/club, its weaknesses, opportunities for growth and threats . They then work as a group to minimise threats and maximise opportunities. Staff are also asked to propose actions which would build upon existing strengths and reduce weaknesses . Some of the proposed actions may involve training . Specific people then give commitments for carrying out particular activities by particular dates . BUZZ GROUPS

A buzz group is another type of brainstorming . It involves breaking a large group into smaller groups of five or six people to discuss ideas relating to a topic . Groups are given a time limit, usually between five and ten minutes for each topic . The advantages of using buzz groups are that most members of the group are involved, peer pressure is reduced and they encourage a greater willingness on the part of group members to contribute. Buzz groups also help build cohesion amongst participants . Some disadvantages of buzz groups are that sometimes too much pressure to respond is created, or that pressure may arise to give more time to buzz groups than the truetor initially planned .
