Not even a thrilling last round in the professional league could dim the buzz at Elsternwiek Par k last Sunday as the A-section finals kicked off in sen. The excitesational conditions before a lively crowd De La Salle and ment was heightened when Collegians turned on a thrilling last quarter to produce a nail biting first-semi final in the twos which saw the Lions snatch a four point win right on the bell. It was a fitting opener to the main contest, to be played between two sides responsible for two of the closest games in the home and away fixture . The and four Redlegs won both of those matches - by twoCardinals points - but they were out-pointed by the from the start last Sunday and quickly found themselves playing catch-up football, ultimately losing by 43 points in a comprehensive defeat . With the key trio of Cam Thompson, Cam Kennedy and Micah Berry on the side-lines, Old Melburnians were missing a potential match-winner and two prime ball carriers, and it proved to be telling in the outcome . While Scotch had more of the ball in the first half, their disposal was less than precise and wayward kicking in particular kept the Redlegs in the contest until half time . The Cardinals turned up the heat in the third term, booting five goals to two for a 39-point lead and a seemingly unassailable position at three-quarter time . Old Melburnians had managede just four goals in three quarters and looked incapabl of kicking a winning score . But in such good conditions a comeback was never out of the question, and the first goals of the quarter went to the Redlegs and the atmosphere at Elsternwick Park - one of the unfulfilled anticipation for most of the afternoon o electricity hof a thunderstorm t too k . e Redlegs push forsee t lasted jus long enough t

ward again . confirming their renewed will to win, but was short-circuited desperately when Rohan Price . on hands and knees after losing a contest on the outer half-back-flank, made a lunging tackle to wrap up a goal-bound Redleg in a heroic match-saving effort . As Scotch nearly let their opponents back into the would have been contest. Cardinals supporters. but otherwise it was excused for getting a little edgy a fairly relaxed affair for the 1997 runners-up . They never really slipped into top gear . yet finished up with a comprehensive victory and a week's rest before the preliminary final next Sunday. And while the strength of their combination was evident against Old Melburnians, they will no doubt use the week off to polish the disposal, which let them down often last Sunday . Gavin Eagle played his best football for the season with a dominant performance at full-back on Redlegs' skipChris Ellis . while Rohan Price nullified. Throw in Tim per Tim Stuckey at centre-half-back

Holt's blanket job on Zani Usienov, and the Scotch trio shut down Old Melburnians' vitai forward play-makers . Despite taking the mark of the year . Sc forward Aiden Boyd struggled for touch it goals. Fortunately for Cardinals, Wayne Ha a number of attacking weapons in his arn decoy forwards Bruce Phillips and Scott Du them in touch with vital first half goals . Andr continues to offer a lively target while Campbell Heath kicked three second half reinforce the Cardinals' forward strengt Smyth and Steve Collins ran hard and creat in the midfield, while the two Cams, Aul Eabrey, were prominent four quarter player Redlegs . Can Xavs possibly falter today ? The answer is definitely a resounding `YE the best of sides have ordinary days, and th la which has worked so well all year just mi, hitch at the most unfortunate of times . You n believe all the talk about finals being a diffe game, but the fact of the matter is that the r the previous 18 rounds will become meaning the psychological ledger will be square when sides step out onto the field today - first ver ond, both desperate to secure a grand final the luxury of a week's rest . The problem for St. Bernards is not psycl - what they must overcome is a Xaverians sii ming with top-class talent on every line . names which have cropped up week in w through the season : Ford . Wood, Dillon and I move the ball swiftly and precisely from defe attack, where any possible combinat Richardson, Bourke, Jones and Taylor meth~ and often stylishly, convert opportunities into And don't discount Michael Blood, a prove, player and tireless worker . Garry Foulds has found a combination c and toughness which has provided St . Bernal an excellent season . The good form of the tw Logan and Loughlin . and the two Merrington',, and Andrew, has eased the pressure carried s last year by skipper Luke Gollant and brother Paul Gilmour and Luke Vassallo have shared haul in front of goals throughout the season, enigmatic Vassallo, in particular, holds the ke} possible St . ACTION FROM THE FIRST SEMI FINAI, FROM EI,STER ICK PARK LAST SUNDAY

Scott Duthie (Old Scotch) evades Simon Theodore (Old Melburnians) in last week's First Semi-Final

n perfect conditions the 1998 finals series was kicked off with a thrilling clash between North Old Boys and Old Trinity . REVIEW North Old Boys had enjoyed a successful home an d away campaign whereas Old Trinity's form in the lead up to the finals had been at best, indifferent, and the first quarter suggested the game was going to go according to recent form . North Old boys started well kicking two goals and having a hand in another . But, at the mid-way point of the quarter Old Trinity began to win more of the ball around the packs and although they wasted a number of scoring opportunities, managing 1 .6 for the quarter, there were signs they were working their way back into the contest .

The second quarter saw the Old Trinity combination click into gear with Ramsden providing drive out of the ruck, and Allibon and D . Burrows making their presence felt around the ground and setting up opportunities for Heath and Stickland and Old Trinity added seven goals for the quarter. But North Old Boys were hanging on through three valuable goals against the run of play and onballers Vavallo and Tonkin were still getting plenty of the ball . However by half time they faced a deficit of 12 points and momentum appeared to have swung in Old Trinity's favor. In the third quarter. Old Trinity looked to have all the answers with too much scoring power and an increasingly dominant midfield . Their forward duo of Heath and Stickland kicked the first two goals of the quarter. North Old Boys' busy Vavallo answered with a handy goal pulling the margin back to seven points . But as the quarter wore on Ramsden was beginning to get on top in the ruck. Kennedy was doing well on a wing and Allibon continued to create scoring opportunities with his damaging use of the ball . Old Trinity piled on the next four goals building a lead of 44 points before a late goal to North Old Boys' Mikunda brought it back 38 points just before three quarter time . Old Trinity clearly had a match winning lead, but NOB's throughout the year have shown their ability to play out the full four quarters and from the first bounce it was clear NOB's had steeled themselves for one last effort . Mikunda capitalised on a great piece of running play from NOB's and booted the first goal for the quarter. Old Trinity answered quickly, but NOB's through the play of vice captain Collison kicking two goals . Jordan snapping truly and Abrahams adding another were working their way back into the game .

A free kick to Ramsden directly in front of goal looked brieflv at have halted the NOB's charge bu t NOB's piled on another four goals with two Mikunda, one to Vavallo and another to Jordan NOB's were within one point of Old Trinity . With clock ticking past the 30 minute mark Old Trinity the ball out of the centre and the ball was chipped v into the possession of Allibon deep in the pocket front of the coaches box kicking toward Elsternvrick Hotel end . Allibon went back and cal drilled the shot, taking Old Trinity out to a hanc point lead . The blow appeared to break the gal North Old Boys and with Stickland marking and verting and Allibon adding another Old Trinity home . Marcellin v Old Ivanhoe, Second Semi Final, Elsternwick Park. Old Ivanhoe have been the form side of the se( half of the year and meet the other B Section B d tant in Marcellin . Both sides scored a win in their meetings this, with Marcellin scoring a handy win at home early Old Ivanhoe scoring an emphatic win at home ir second meeting . Old Ivanhoe's major weapons are it's miserly b line which has successfully closed down their op tion scoring options and it's versatile on-ball/for set up . Backmen Young. Tully, Kent and R( Weddle have been among their most consistent pl< this year. They also have talented and hard working o r division including Hares, Jenkins. Stewart Donaldson . Rowan Weddle and Hope changing between and the forward line have been an effective com tion and Shadbolt is a dangerous gold sneak . Marcellin have a more conventional set up wit competition's leading goal scorer Treganowen a forward the main target complimented by Purcel Caffrev . Marcellin also have an accomplished band ballers in Cox, Waters and Dinneen who will re the spaces offered by Elsternwick Park . Old Ivanhoe's form is impressive, but the quf is, can they keep it going? Marcellin to win will n( counter the Old Ivanhoe ruck combination and e quality delivery to its forwards . They also must cc the Old Ivanhoe backline's inevitable close attent it's forwards . If the Eagles on ballers can get on to Treganowen and Purcell fire on the expans

E;lsternwick Park, Marcellin might just have too much sc oring power for Old Ivanhoe . Marcellin by 14 points .

Contrasting weather to the week before made for two much more enjoyable games of football . Both game s were of a high standard and played in great spirit which kept the large crowd happy . Second Semi-fmal, Beanmaris v Old Mentonians . Beatty went bang in the first term, one of their customary quick starts leaving the OM's way behind very early . The Sharks peppered the goals in the first 15 minutes and had seven goals on the board before the reserves had finished their showers . Although Carter was winning in the ruck for the OM's, the rest of their team was rattled . and although they managed a couple before the siren, it couldri t come quick enough . The Panthers had to change things in the second term, and unfortunately that meant sending one of their best ball getters down back . 'Banger Murphy went down to start cleaning up, and that saw the Panthers struggling around the packs . They were finding it hard to get a clean possession, the Sharks pressuring them all the way . Meanwhile the Sharks were finding lots of space. They often had one or two options out of the packs, and used the expanses of the ground well to move it forward . The OM's were having problems up forward . They were starting with just two men anywhere near the . goals . Stroudy was out at CHF but could not get a sniff being well held by Groves, and the only bloke in their forward 50 . Adam Acreman was finding himself at least 50 out when he rarely got the ball . In contrast Beauy had two blokes coming out of the goal square, and they were getting it 30 metres out, and if they didn't mark it, one of their small brigade swooped in on it and finished it off. The Panthers had got back into the game, but that messed up forward set up saw them unable to really bridge the gap, and they were 5 goals down at the half . In the third the Panthers were a lot better. Their use of the ball was a lot more effective, and Stroudy and Acreman were taking marks and kicking goals . The Sharks looked a bit flat, and with all the momentum the OM's got to within a point . they were giving it all and it was paying off, but unfortunately the Sharks still had a a sniff, bit to give . Just as soon as the Panthers had got the Sharks lifted a notch and snuffed it out . They put on three quick goals and without a lot of trouble, and had got out to another handy break at siren time . The Sharks continued in the last, and although the Panthers were again competitive, the result rarely looked in doubt . They just kept running, and with Quin finding it hard to stay away from the ball, they finished, off well and progressed to the Grand Final, victors by 22 points .

Best players were many for the Sharks, Groves down back, Holt in the middle an d McClean whose contribution in completely nullifyi the always dangerous Tony Bournon cannot be undi stated . For the Panthers, the Murphy boys stood up un( a lot of pressure down back, and big Carter's efforts the ruck were admirable, but it just wasn't their da.) am sure though they will be right on this week, will spot in `B' Grade and some pride on the line . Reserves Second Semi Final, St .Bedes Mentc Tigers v Old Geelong . In stark contrast to their two regular season cla es, this game was all Tigers. From the outset the Tig looked in control, in a fast paced game their ball use the big ground was extremely effective and they loo a bit too classy for their aging opposition . The Tiâ‚Ź were able to increase their lead at every change eventually ran out quite comfortable 51 point vict For those who saw it it was a high quality game I moved quickly, was skilful and played in good sp And I'm sur the players appreciated the good stanc of umpiring, not often found in a regular sea reserves game, and I have no doubt it only enhar the quality of the game . P review - Preliminary Final, Old Mentonian Hampton Rovers . I just can't see this one being close . The Rovers performance was quite good, and the Panthers lost, they were two completely different matches . The Rc victory came in ordinary conditions in a game that going to be won by whoever played the conditions ter, not so much the better side . Now I don't want to sound like I'm down on the Rovers . They did e, thing they had to win that day and did it well, and it a great win for their club . The Panthers were jumped early, but recover enoughtpbackws40lupointead t within a point . And when they did, it was their big who did the damage . Carter won the ball in the mi and Dart and Solley got it down to Stroud and Acr( who did their job and kicked goals . They have se big guns and I don't think the Rovers have the pe nel to hold them all . The Rovers have a big chance to prove someth a few who doubt they have the ability to match it the Panthers, but I just can't see it happening . Th have some quality players in Anderson who will the end of either the first or second handball every pack. and he will be getting it down forwa

them, and a couple of solid defenders who are good at running the ball out . But I think they will struggle to kick a big enough score with only a couple of proven goalkickers compared to the Panthers who have three players that have kicked over 200 goals between them this season . The Rovers will definitely give it a shake, but will fall short, the OM's to get up and have another go at Beauy in the Grand Final . reserves Preliminary Final, Old Geelong v Beaumaris. The Oggers will be wearing the blue shorts this week, and coming out of the social club rooms . The Sharks will be in the white shorts, and coming out of the grandstand rooms . The Oggers will be ranting and raving at the start, the loudest voice being that of their coach, and their runner, disguised as senior coach Mark Neeld. Beauy struggled in the first final, but won . The Oggers looked top heavy in the second final and lost . This will be an interesting game, but also a low scoring one . The ball will go wide a lot, and there should be a lot of uncontested marks taken . I'll go for the Oggers, who beat the Sharks in the last round, and do look a better side .

D SECTION by Ken Bremne r

& Tom Brai n oth rounds of finals, played over Saturday and BSunday at Kavanagh Reserve Modialloc, were contested in perfect football conditions . a far cry from only one week prior . Supporters and spectators were treated to some first class football . and all players, winners and losers alike, displayed all the great skills that make our game just that better than anything else going around . Congratulations are in order for the Whitefriars club as being the first team promoted to'C' Section for '99, whilst commiserations to Parkside on bowing out after such a successful season . Review - Second Semi Final (August 29) Rese rves - Ajax V Whitefriars The 'Friars' were ecstatic to get over the line winners. Their Ist qtr was a bit ordinary but from there on they remained rock solid and very dogged in their approach to the game . This was borne out by the fact that Ajax only scored 2 goals after qtr time and both were registered in the last stanza . Better players for Whitefriars were Andrew Glenn . Gary Johnson and James McFarlane . Seniors - Whitef riars V Aja x Ajax went into the game full of confidence and skipped away to an 8 pt lead at the lst change . The 'Jackas' lost its centreline of Duzenman . Bloom and Gelbart to injuries early in the game and Whitefriars got its running game going and slammed on 7 gis in 13 minutes before half time . Trailing by 28 pts . Ajax kicked the next 5 gls and clawed its way back into the game to trail by a solitary pt at the lemon break . Totally undermanned with a war like injured list . Ajax succumbed to the running power of the 'Friars' who took over complete control to finish the game in workmanlike fashion and score comfortably . Best for Ajax were Kalinski . Halphen . Grundmann, Rosen and Rajch and for Whitefriars, none better than ruckman Rob Pasqualotto, Anthony Carbone and the skipper Mark Bateman, along with the multi pronged forwards of Reidy. Carigg . Robinson and Glouchev who gave Jackas terrible trouble . First Semi Final (August 30) Rese rves - Parkside V Southban k Southbank gained an early break and looked the goods, holding a ist qtr lead of 4 gls . however to the 'Red Devils' credit they hit back hard in the 2nd to square the ledger at the long break . Parkside drew first blood in the 3rd before the 'Bankers' quickly replied . Kicking into a strengthening breeze, Parkside appeared to be travelling well and restricting Southbank with ease . No sooner said and two (2) Parkside players are reported and sent from the ground for 15 minutes to the sin bin . Absolute turning point of the game (so it should've been too. 18 V 16 ni--) a„rl then on it was mere one way traffic

with the 'Bankers' running out commanding 8 go< victors . Parkside were well represented by Yandl Lennen . Warren and Reginato whilst for Southbanl Arra, Bubba, Huss, Fraze and Filthy were terrifi Watch out everybody these Bankers are now very ser ous contenders. Seniors - Southbank V Parksid e Aided by a 3- 4 goal breeze . Parkside failed to tal full advantage and in fact Southbank nailed them ju shy of the siren to hold a slender 1 goal qtr time lea In the 2nd, the 'Bankers' took their time to settle in stride and wasted many shots on goal before getti ,on song' and quickly putting the issue beyond dou by bagging 6 large to take a 7+ goal lead into t sheds . A fairly lacklustre 2nd half with Southba . outscoring the 'Red Devils' 6 gls to 5 in the 3rd sta za to hold an invincible 3 qtr time advantage . The 1, qtr was a slug out and arm wrestle for 15 minul before the 'Bankers' once again broke the shackles score a barrage of goals. culminating in a 76 pt w ning margin . MVP's for Southbank were many, he ever trimming it down, try Jimmy .G . . Lan Lovechild, Roy Boy . Hodgy . East . The Wizard Tractor. For Parkside . McCall, Laursen, Inser MacNamara and Harvey were all marvellous contril tors . A disappointing finish for Parkside but absolute top rate performance by Southbank . Preview (Preliminary Final) - September 5 Reserves - Ajax V Southbank - (KB) In their I home and away clash, Southbank, very much agai the trend at the time, gave the'Jackas' a bit of a'ti le' up on their own turf at Albert Park . Whilst I'm s gesting that matters this time around will be a lot c er and tighter, I firmly believe that the 'Bankers' stronger and in the prime of their form . Ajax dii command top position by default and they will c nitely prove to be the testing material, however I'rr Southbank to win by 9 pts . (TB) The Jackas depth be tested today as we believe there are a few inju floating around while the Bankers can only b . Confidence plays a big part in finals foo estrong t and Southbank are full of it at the moment while Jackas may be down a bit, but they won't put in bad ones in a row and will give a good accour themselves but like KB the Brain is tip Southbank, have to or I'll get hung . Seniors - Ajax V Southbank - (KB) Here w again, and yes I reckon it'll be another close t stopper. The stakes are high, emotions strong, adrenalin rushing and muscles pumping . Both twilsureybalitesckandsoryf themsi

tl

from last weeks games and may just be nursing a few injuries . Given this, it could come down to a test of the survival of the fittest . It will be a hard clash with no beg pardons and for all the class and speed of the ?Jackas' I'm tipping the strength of Southbank to reign supreme. Let's cut to the chase, I'm not 'gunna tip against my team, hence the 'Bankers' by 2+ goals . (TB) A bit of rivalry has developed between the two clubs this year. Forgetting the shellackings during the home and aways the qualifying proves there is nothing between the encumbents today . If we are to believe rumours then the Jackas may be missing a few today but who listens to rumours anyway certainly not the Bankers as they will be geared to combat anything the AJAX side can throw at them. Like my cohort I cannot tip against my own team but for fear of reprisal but because I really think they can win . AJAX will dig deep and throw everything at Southbank who with the confidence gained from last week will answer the challenge. earn promotion to C Section and the right to challenge Friars in the GF. * Flynnies tip this week is Southbank . Press Correspondents : Fax to KB on 9850 6964 (Email KenBremner~cuaccess .net .au) or Tommy on 9265 8001 by midday at the latest on Monday foliowing the game . E SECTION (Blue) by Craig Richardso n

Knitwear We 11, it's Grand Final time again and yet that me ans that the season has come to an end (sad for most of us) . Last week we saw Peninsula taking on Old Camberwell . in a tough and bruising affair which saw Peninsula get out to (at one stage) a 37 point lead . Going into the last quarter Peninsula led by 31 points and seemingly looking at playing in the Big One, however 'the Wellers' had different ideas . After quick goals put them back into the lead, the Pirates kicked a late goal and it looked like they might just h ang on . but again the Wellers refused to lie down and a goal basically on the siren by Inkster sealed the game and their grand final berth . For the Pirates, well they'll have a long summer remembering the one that got away . In the Reserves Old Camberwell lost the toss but pumped the Pirates and showed why they finished on top .

all the champagne and lagers are flow- -- . J in it will be Caulfiel d ce~ebrating longer and harder having won the 1998 E Blue Gran Final by 16 points . IN THE MAGOO S As in the one's, Caulfield are doing battle wit Old Camberwe ll . Looking back a fortnigh Caulfield had a great win but going into this we ebigon,IfelCambrwelihavtomr answers on the day and will reverse the semi fin result . Old Camberwell by 26 points . Overall, well done to a ll teams in E Blue in se~ son '98, hope to see you all next year (apart fro, those being promoted/relegated) and congratul tions to the VAFA on another great year of footy .

THE GRAND FINAL

I

CAULFIELD GRAMMARIANS V . OLD CAMBERWELL Both sides were relegated at the end of last season . but have proved to all in E section that further improvement is required as they are now both straight back up into D Section . However, it's the Premiership that they are playing for and I'm sure that there will be no short steps taken in trying to win in today's game . Really, this game promises to be a ripper, both sides confident, more than capable and very very pumped . On form Caulfield might have a slight edge and having had the weeks rest, this should only help heal some of those niggling sore spots . As for goal scoring potential . I have the Wellers in front in this area and if the ground conditions remain solid underfoot this could create many nightmares for the Caulfield defence . Both teams have capable onballers and some of these matchups will be great highlights . The big key to this game is whether or not Caulfield can kick a winning score . Having had few problems all year in this department and not relying on any one avenue to goal I feel this is where they'll get on top of the Wellers . In what should be one of the great games of not only E section but the whole of the VAFA finals series I' ll tip Caulfield to win but not without giving the Wellers some sort of a chance . In the end when

7 That a contrast between last Saturday and its r predecessor . A bit of a breeze, but very nearly perfect footy weather . John Montgomery sacked the vibrato siren, and used the back up . a reedy little number, but effective nonetheless . Richmond Central bowed out gallantly in a game that staved tense, right to the dying seconds . They have been the season's big improvers, and deserve to be a force in the section next season . So, Kew and Old Carey return to D Section in 1999 . the K's after only two season's absence, for the C's . an interminable 18 years! Both Club's players, and especially their Committees and Supporters, are to be congratulated on achieving their primary aim for the year, Promotion! And every success to both in their quest for the icing on the cake, the Flags ! THE PRELIMINARIES SENIORS Central and Kew started with Central having first use of the breeze kicking to the main stand end . Central won this quarter because of Whisper 0' Sullivan 's prolific ball getting round midfield, and Merv Shannon's ascendency at FF, where he bagged 5 big ones, with the 5th out at the 19 minute mark after a magnificent mark 35 metres out . Kew weren't far away though, Ric and Joe Pulvirenti, King, Cullen . Woods . and Masciti were all doing well . The second term was a bit of a waste for Kew, they crept a few points closer, but their forwards were off song, and nullified to some extend the good work of LaFranchi at CHB, Bortone in the BP, and Jim Landwehr who was doing a great job keeping a lid on the dangerous Paul Byrne . When Franco Bove's goal in the third minute put Central 20 points up, the game could easily have slipped away from the K's, but Gencarelli had a purple patch round HF and Ric Pulvirenti (2) and Dimasi (1) whacked on 3 goals in as many minutes, and from then on the game was nip and tuck . John Kalpakis had done a terrific job curtailing the flying Men, Shannon, and Central did not look as good up forward . The lead seesawed through the early part of the last, but another Ric Pulvirenti snap put the K's 3 points up in the 9th minute . and they were never headed . Woods' running goal at 23 minutes was the sealer for the Browns . The turning point for Central may have been Bove's poster at 19 minutes . Had that been a goal, who knows ? Kew were an even side . with everyone making a contribution, Masciti did many effective things round the ground, the Pulvirenti brothers were gold . Jamie Bell took telling marks, and kicked timely goals . Andy Waters gave his all in the ruck

for Central . Andy Siwka was strong whether forward or back, and Tod d O'Sullivan was very proficient . RESERVES

While the C's finished up beating CY comfo ably, for three quarters of this game there w nothing in it . Then the C's came out in the fir term and kicked 9 goals 2 behinds to no sco Most peopl'e, certainly me, remain clueless as why! For CY . Mackley and Burgess seemed to everywhere simuitaneously, even that remarkal last quarter. Dave Wright was the architect of t C's win, and Jack Farmer put in another top ru( ing effort . THE SENIOR GRAND FINAL Having plaved and watched each other so clo ly for the past two years, it is hard to see either s springing surprises on each other . Kew have a ht depth of experience and skills, and are capa directed by the hot gospelling Serge D'Angelo . '1 C's coach, Glenn Taylor, has his collection of fl footed, talented athletes working in a very di : plined manner . The question is, what will prev Kew's strength and football nous, or the C's ri ning prowess, and rapid ball movement . One th is certain, if the C's do not play their natural ri ning game they will not match Kew's close quart attributes . As this is being written there is a pressure area lurking ominously off the south ~% coast of WA. I rang my old mate Reg Trigg, who l the best weather nose in the West, and the new not good . "It'll slide south of the Bight and Melbourne at the weekend', said Triggo . Well 1 hope he's wrong, so the real abilities of Pulvirentis, Masciti, Woods, Bell, Cullen, King Gencarelli to name a few for Kew, and Bu! Jackson, Matthews, Birkill, Vasilopou' . Campbell, Angus . Hickey and Spencer for the, can be seen to the greatest effect . Picking Gn Final winners isn't easy because of the press factors, but the C's have done little wrong this } so it is hard to go past them to crown their effi with a flag . But not by much, and only after a game, whatever the weather.

RESERVES Using the same criterion as for the seniors, hard to see the C's improving enough on their ' . semi form enough to beat what is a magnificent of Kew Ressies . They are playing well at the r end of the season, and while the C's have potential to beat anybody, Kew has had their n sure this year. On their current form, Kew sh c THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER

REVIEW onash Gryphons were able to book their place in Mthe F Section Grand Final with a comfortable win at the expense of Syndal Tally Ho. The Sinners had plenty of the footy early but the superior finishing of the Gryphons forwards meant that a lot of the Sinners hard work went unrewarded . Tim Gilchrist up forward was back to his dangerous best . reeling in contested marks with ease and covering all his opportunities. The Gryphs back half was held together by Urban and Rafaniello who repelled many attacks whilst the midfield was won by the Gryphons with Heterington the dominant figure . Monash chose to tag the Sinners best player in Rutter and although he threatened at times he was generally well held by Andy Tolongas . Murray was by far the best player for the Sinners as he constantly drove them forward but his forwards were not able to capitalise on his play. All in all. a good win for the Monash boys to set up a clash with Hawthorn whilst the Sinners, once they overcome the natural initial disappointment. should reflect with fond memories their first year in the senior competition as they did themselves proud . PREVIEW And then there were two . 75 games down, one to go. Both Hawthorn and Monash have had Cinderella years in 1998 after bleak 1997's where they were both cellar dwellers . Clearly they have worked hard both on and off the field and it is a credit to themselves that they have reached this point . It shows that by providing an atmosphere that allows players and supporters alike to feel comfortable and enjoy their association, football clubs can be formed rather than face the horror of folding. So in Monash's eighth year and the Hawks fourth, they match up for the ultimate football prize .

KEY MATCH UPS Gilchrist (M) v . Parker (H) - Gilchrist has been a constant source of goals for the Gryphons and when he is on song is hard to stop . Parker has been ultra consistent backmen for the Hawks and their clash will be pivotal. Davey (M) v. Lauletta (H) - At the Hawks pointy end, it will be a battle of the big men as these two meet. Davey was on top early in the second semi final but Lauletta got better as the game went on. Grady (M) v. Hutchinson (H) - Two of the best bigmen in the league will go at it once again . Both play a similar style with them taking many marks across half back. Probably the most important duel . Hetherington (M) v. Murray (H) -Two extremely fit players who are both hard at it . Honors were probably 30

halved last time so another keen duel is envisaged . Rafaniello (M) v . S . Avery (H) - The Monash CHB has been a domir force through out the year but a shoulder comp] sidelined him last time they met . S . Avery is a 1 working CHF who relies on his strength to bust c packs . A clash worthy of the admittance price . Kilmister (M) v . P. Avery (H) - Fifth meeting of Monash CHF and Hawk CHB for the year and ow the honors have been shared. Both are athletic courageous and consequently a great match up . Wells (M) v . A. Sill (H) - Wells has been in good I throughout the finals but A. Sill is a disciplined ta who will run the distance out . RESULT The previous four clashes of these two sides I resulted in two wins apiece with the most recent b a nine goal victory to Hawthorn in the second : final . Monash coach Gary Ryan has developed a d plined unit whilst his Hawthorn counterpart, F Tyson has quietly stoked his teams fire over the few weeks. Heart v. Head? Statistics v . Hunch? N have to take the weak option and wish both sides of luck and may the best side win in a game th, sure to uphold the finest qualities of Amateur foot RESERVES

Eley Park have continued their amazing roll out of 13 Rob Robinson tells me) . They have set clash with West Brunswick who would have I happy to sit out last week as their opponents battl out in summer like conditions . The Sharks jugger might have one more week left in it and consequE win the game in a hard fought battle . SOCIAL Both senior sides will be celebrating/commisi ing at their normal haunts. Monash will head ba( the Gryph Inn from 6 .00pm onwards where $P players and officials and $10 for supporters will gel admittance and access to the finger food and two provided as well as the DJ . Hawthorn will head bai Rathmines Road where entertainment and finger will be provided on the Presidents account also 6pm onwards. OTHER All at Hawthorn wish Paul 'Hondo' Rositto very best after his serious accident . Our thought: heavily with you and your family at this time an, assure you we will all be in it for the long haul . Gc go you little beauty. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLE

5 YEARS AG O brilliant first term by Collegians and poor banling and disposal by Old Xaverians - OX 0 .0 at the first change and Collegians 5 .8 . McClements, Grills (OP) were best . Umpires were Greg Hardiman and Kevin Segota. Kew, after an inaccurate 1 .10 in the first term to Therrv s 3 goals straight, were far too strong and, although the margin was 11 points (7 .12 to 6.7), were never in danger . Graeme Simpson appointed to 'F' Section grand final between Thornbury and Bulleen United, chalked up his 300th game - including 31 finals (8 grand finals), 1970 'A' Grade Grand Final . and 1978's Victoria v . Tasmania game . In a magnificent high scoring game North OB came from 24 points down at the last change to kick 9 .3 to Blues 2 .3 and go to meet Old Scotch in 'A' Section Grand Final . Best were S . Maguire, Dillon (6 goals), Horan (NOB) and Dobbie, Holt, Tyquin (Blues) . Parkside (B) went down 19 .14 to Old Paradians 20 .15 with Howell, P. Johnston, Nankervis (Parkside) and S . Assetta . C . J2 Old Haileyburians . Old Brighton's Graeme Templeton played his 250th game in 'C' Reserve Grand Final against St . Kilda CBOC and it was a draw, 8.5 apiece . VAFA innovations for the season : 'two umpire' system and the introduction of the interchange rule to replace the old nineteenth and twentieth man concept . Social successes were the President's and Secretaries Annual Dinner at Chaucer's when presentations were made to retiring secretary Jack Fullerton and his wife Norma . the sympathetic listener over the years to club's grievances and the B&F Vote Count at Collingwood . 25 YEARS AGO - 1973 What a thriller! St . Bernard's won their wav into the 'A' Section Grand Final when they beat Ormond with a goal kicked after the siren . Ormond led by 28 points at three quarter time . but with the wind still blowing strongly, St . Bernard's plugged away until they were only four points behind with about 5 minutes to play. Ormond rallied to score a goal and it looked all over, but St . Bernard's got another and then from a free kick, given only seconds before the siren, goaled to win by 3 points . Best were G . Mahoney, Ginnivan . Burgin . K . Phelan . Schwarzenburg, King (St . Bernards) and R . Cameron . Rob Curtis . R . Cameron (4 goals) . Logan, Kozlowski, Sierakowski (Ormond) . Tooley, Roth, Woolf (Monash) , 30 YEARS AGO - 196 8 'C' Section B&F was Richard Mannix (Footscray Tech) with 22 points from L . Smith (Hampton Rovers) runner-up with 21 points. Caulfield Grammarians were too strong for Uni . Blues 16 .11 to 13 .15 and gained the chance to have another 'go' at Old Paradians . Atchison was again Caulfield's star . well supported by J & P Hore, and G . Tootell, Sykes, Stewart . Collett were best for Blues . UHSOB's inaccuracy. 4 .13 cost them victory against Monash's 7 .9 . Best Wettenhall, McMaster, Rattray . (M . Blues) and Smith, Joslin . McCartney (UHSOB) . FITOB won the'C' Section premiership 11 .8 to St . Bernards 7.9 . 40 YEARS AGO - 1958 Old Scotch knocked Old Xaverians out of the finals when a great second half enabled them to win by 5 goals and earn the right to play Collegians in the 'A' Section Grand Final . Old Paradians were far too good for Commonwealth Bank in'B' and would meet U . Blacks in Grand Final . U. Reds run of narrow finals losses continued when ANZ beat them by 4 points . Hampton Scouts in Junior section second semi caused a major upset when they beat leaders Alphington, who had lost only one game previously and that by a narrow margin . University then defeated Alphington in Prelim . Final and lined up against Hampton Scouts in the Grand final . 50 YEARS AGO - 194 8 U . Blacks were outplayed by Old Melburnians in the second half to lose the final by 17 points . Blacks had the right of challenge and the two teams would play off again in the Grand Final at St . Kevins Oval. One of the boundary umpires for the day was a chap named Fred Coldrev ! Teams for the day were : Old Melburnians Bks : R. Corrie-Smith, K . Rollason . P. King HB: P. Grimwade, E . Fine weather, great football . Cut throat time again today . Review Section 1 In near perfect conditions at the City Oval the Old Xaverians Old Paradians clash was always going to be a ripper . Both teams possess quality players throughout each line-up with potent forward lines and equally as equipped backlines . The midfield was where the battle would be won and the Xavs were to prove better last week . The desire of both teams to get away to a good start was obvious from the determination and tenacity at which each attacked the ball . Ploenges' injury unsettled the OP's, while the Xavs with better kicking could well have been in front by more . The second and third quarters proved intense battles with the ascendancy swaying between the two teams . C. Carrodus, Coughlan and Funder were doing well for the Xavs, while Loney Perry and Szewczyk were keeping the OP's within reach . In the final quarter nothing separated the two teams . however after 15 mins the Xavs broke clear to go a couple up and when Rush put through a team lifter the OP's task looked too large . Battle they did until the final bell with Curran and Byron doing well all day . For the Xavs Morrison and Storey were in good touch . Section 2 Straighter kicking at Scammell Reserve seemed the order of the day for Old Scotch who had (2) more scoring shots than Whitefriars yet won handsomely on the scoreboard . The game began at a fierce pace with both sides using the space and conditions to their fullest advantage . Thomas (OS) and Anderson (W) the respective key forwards on the day were prominent, while the Scotchies held a slender lead at the first break . Thomas would finish with a match winning (16) goals for the day . They extended this lead in the second with Ashton and Oliver leading the way, while Northey . Phan and Duffy were dangerous for the Friars but the signs were looking ominous . The third proved fatal for the Friars, 4 majors to 7 gave the Scotchies a healthy 6 goal lead, and with their tails up they continued their strong team display in the last with Chapman . Leeds and Paterson going on with their fine first half form . The Friars were well served by O'Meara and Cassarino . Section (2) Blue This match opened at a frenetic pace and with

both sides scoring freely the only question was who would tire first . Hampton Rovers with Dallas prominent and Wilmott lively up forward made the early running, although MHSOB through the Taylors, O'Briens and Parker took an early lead about half way through the term . They did not surrender this for the remainder of the match, and both teams struggled to break away in the second term, the High inaccurate in front of goal although Midwinter. Woods and Voss (HR) were defending stoutly. The Rovers needed to lift in the third and did so with Anderson and Flahive upping their workrate, while Askew, Hill and Moore were proving dangerous as the High maintained their tempo with little reward in front of goal. The Rovers closed the gap, however a couple of late goals made their task difficult . In the final term both sides attacked from the outset and the run of Rodder was important for the High as to the work of Ware through the midfield . Tired players worked hard to create any advantage and in the finish the High were to prevail for the third time over the Rovers and secure a well deserved Grand Final berth . Section (2) Re d In an even match at Trinity playing fields an even first quarter saw both Old Ivanhoe and Yarra Valley throw everything they had at each other, with neither side wilting the scores were locked away at the first break . The second was a similar tale with OIG gaining the advantage to the tune of some 9 points at the half . Six goals to four in the second half (4 to I in the third quarter proving the difference) with the Valley's strong defensive work and excellent midfield and forward thrusts resulting in a Grand Final appearance in two weeks . The Valley gave nothing away with a "team effort" being named their best, while OIG's results were unavailable at the time of writing the column . Preview - Preliminary Finals Section 1

Two close matches and both the Old Paradians' favour would suggest that De La Salle will be up against it today, although finals are a different ball game. The OP's are coming off a tough game last week . considered by many as the Grand Final replay. On the other hand the D's are well rested and Clav Waser will have his charges primed for the task. Relative goalkicking power of each seems equitable .

while the OP's hold the edge in defence . Mercuri, Moore . Clancy and Rogers will need to be watched by the OP's whose prime movers in Talarico, Ciavola . Vecchio and Joyce cannot be kept down for long . A fine day will give both teams the ability to display their vast array of talent, and on recent form a tight contest falling the OP's way is my selection . Selection : Old Paradians . Section 2 With a win apiece and the most recent by the inform St . Bedes Mentone Tigers one would suggest a closer game than many would expect on paper . Whitefriars have stumbled at the wrong time, although possess clearly the personnel to shake off their recent tardy form . Anderson . Crough, Phan . Setches and Davis are potential match winners, while steady players such as Hilton . Reid and Northey should give the Friars the edge - even on the rebound . However a closer looks sees the Tigers able to match if not better the Friars . The Wintles will have a big say in the result, as to will Ryan . Bell . Connolly and Mulcahy . Kingwell will need to be watched as to Zomer. All in all a great match is expected with my leaning toward the Friars who will be suited to the larger spaces of Scammell Reserve . Selection: Whitefriars Section ( 2) Blu e One win each and today's game promises to be a beauty. Similar results across the year in terms of forwards and backs with Hampton Rovers holding the edge over Old Mentonians with a sound defenc e

of Woods, Landrigan and Voss . They will need to be c song today as Ballantine, Palmer and Macnish ee destroy sides should they not be watched all day. TI conditions at Parkdale will suit both teams with fr, flowing midfields, and strong marking forward Rehm . Anderson, Quon, Cripps and Stokes ha proven key players for the Rovers . while Kuramot McKay and the Alexanders for the Panthers ha shone out in the two sides meetings to date . It will a battle of the forwardlines, with the midfield effE tiveness of each crucial . A fresh Panthers outfit ti; take some beating today, and that is my leaning today's outcome . Selections : Old Mentonians Section (2) Red Two wins to Old Ivanhoe over Warringal this y( and a similar defensive result across the year ter itself to an OIG win today, although to rebound aI a close match last week in tiring conditions will I prove easy . The Redbacks are rested and ready take on all comers . and with Sloan, Hopgood r Anderson in fine touch, add to this Singh, Welch < Natoli and you have a formidable outfit capable booting big scores . On the other hand Spoor, Ste Dowd and Willis who oozes class are equally as ented . Fine conditions today will see a fantastic e) bition of strong running football with both te-, capable of going all the way from here . On recent fc OIG will start favourites, although today I predict upset of sorts with the Redbacks to get home by than a kick . Selection : Warringal

COACHING COMMUNICATIONS DURING MATCH BREAK S In order to identify what it is that coaches are communicating to their players, and whether the communication styles of coaches of winning teams differs from that of losing teams, the author used the technique of content analysis to classify 23 auto taped addresses to teams during game breaks, by coaches of country and metropolitan football teams . Many interesting facts were found which have enabled the provision of recommendations which will help coaches improve the effect of their communicating during match breaks . It was found that 85% of communication units (a unit being the shortest verbal statement that makes sense) made reference to the coach's team, only 12% to the opposition, and 3% to other factors (e .g . umpires, weather, etc) . Of those comments directed to the coach's team . 80% were directed to the team in general, with only 20% referring to individual team members . Generally, coaches had little to say about individual players and about the opposition . STYLES OF COMMUNICATIO N Nine styles of communication were identified . It was found that the most used category of communication style was 'sending solutions' (e .g. "Go out there and put }our bodies in harder") . The second most used category of communication, was 'commentary on performance' (e .g. "They will get tired in the last quarter") and 'conditionals' (e .g . "If you keep attacking you will win the game"), were used with moderate regularity . `Questions', statements expressing beliefs, threats, and non-specific references, were found to be utilised infrequently. In general . it was found that many of the addresses lacked structure ; there was no clear ordering or sequence of ideas, and many of the messages were vague and non specific (e .g . players might be told to "kick the first three goals in the next quarter", without any tactical information relating to how this might be achieved). COMMUNICATION PROFILES OF WINNING AND LOSING TEAMS

Thirteen of the 23 addresses were from coaches of winning teams and 10 from losing teams . A comparison of the profiles for winning and losing teams revealed marked differences in communication . Coaches of losing teams delivered 25% mo re units of communication than coaches of winning sides . Coaches of winning teams used significantly more praise and we re more optimistic than coaches of losing teams. The re sults indicate that the coach of the leading side is positively disposed to his players . Consequently his communications are positive . On the other hand, the coach of the trailing side finds his ego is on the line with negativity being the general response.

RECOMMENDATIONS The findings from this and related research sugges t that coaches should focus on the following aspects : Deliver fewer message s Convey a sense of control, composure. and conviction rather than anxiety Be positive and use praise in reinforce appropriate behaviour in individual players and the team . Deliver more comments reiated to the opposition players and team . Concentrate more on the communications related to tactics and strategies. Prepare the address to the player or team, and provide a structure for the content of the talk. STRUCTURE OF THE ADDRESS. Begin with a commentary on the previous performance during the game (especially on what the opposition has been doing) . Send solutions (tactics and strategies) that are informed by an analysis of the opposition's previous performance. Finish the address with a short motivational element. The final recommendation is that there be a considerable reduction in communications directed towards the team, replaced with more two way communications conducted on a one-to-one context with individual players . The application of these principles would not only increase the likelihood of success for coaches in terms of contest outcome, but also enhance the self-concept and well being of the players with whom the coach communicates .
