SPORTSCOVER MATCHES OF THE DAY (FINALS) (--I hould a club wish to contribute towards the costs of (1) the coverage of finals matches by paving either $100 or $200, grand finals tapes will also include the presentation ceremonies where the premiership cup and individual premiership medallions are presented to each player of the winning team .

It is felt that this will be an added attraction to clubs, players and supporters lodging orders with the VAFA for a cop_v of a tape . Each tape includes the whole match with full commentary and as stated the presentation ceremony in full . A participating club must agree though to contribute towards the costs to a) have access to a tape of the match and b) to then have the abilitv to order multiple copies of the match tape . The payment of $ 100 entitles the club to one tape and any number of extra tapes at $20 each, whilst a $200 payment automatically entitles the club to 10 match tapes . UNDER 19 BEST ON GROUND MEDALLION S In a team sport winning a premiership is what it's all about. However for the last five vears the best on the ground in the A section grand final is awarded the "Jock" Nelson Medal. The Executive this year has expanded this concept to include the Under 19 sections . The best players on the ground in the following grand finals will be awarded the follotiving : Under 19 section 1- The Alex Johnson Medal Under 19 section 2 - The John Miles Medal Under 19 Blue section - The John Simpson Medal Under 19 Red section - The Max Lyon Medal At the conclusion of each final the VAFA appointed duty officer will confer with the umpires to decide on the winner and this will be conveyed to the person after whom the medal has been named to enable him to present his medal .

It is hoped to expand this further in the future to include other senior sections of the VAFA . LOSING IS NOT EASY. Most of us are able to be both jubilant in victory

yet gracious enough to acknowledge the feelings of the losin g team . As the loser in any PHIL STEVENS contest it is often CHIEF EXECUTIVE excruciatingly hard to OFFICE R "grin and bear it" . Everyone understands how hard this is, but in Amateur football, one of the unwritten requirements is for a losing team to remain on the ground whilst the winning team is given both a premiership cup and premiership medallions . Unfortunately last weekend a couple of clubs were not able to demonstrate this level of sportsmanship and vacated the arena as soon as they could . Hopefully this weekend and next weekend, losing clubs and tivinning clubs can demonstrate all those qualities that make most of us think Amateur football is something pretty special. VOTE COUNT NIGHT.

On Monday night the final three rounds of votes for each of the senior sections will be counted at the Carlton Crest Hotel. Each club's leading vote earner has been invited and many close finishes are assured . Other presentations will be made on Monday night to - the major winner of the guit Smokefree Club Awards: the best and fairest players in the Club XVIII and Under 19 competitions : each winner of each section's leading goalkicking competition : the Blades Championship Club ; the Quit Most Disciplined Under 19 team . The goal of the year and the mark of the year will be shown as captured by our Sportscover / Channel 31 team from games covered and videos submitted by clubs . A tape of the highlights of the Vote Count Evening can be ordered through the VAFA - each tape costs S20 . We hope to provide an entertainment package during the evening as well . GOOD LUCK to all teams in grand finals today and to the A and B section preliminary finalists who will meet for the right to meet Marcellin (B) and Old Xaverians (A) in next weekend's grand finals .

MARCELLIN V. OLD IVANHOE, SECOND SEMI FINAL, ELSTERNWICK PAR K

The Second Semi Final saw Marcellin grab a place in the Grand Final and in A Section next year with a fighting win over Old Ivanhoe . The game saw both side have patches of dominance, with one breaking away only to be reeled back in by their opponents . Marcellin started well kicking with the wind and controlled the play in the first quarter . But the Eagles were unable to translate possession into scores . However by the end of the quarter they had two goals on the board and had kept Old Ivanhoe goalless . As the second quarter progressed it appeared that Marcellin were running away with the game as they kicked the first three of the quarter, taking a five goal lead . Marson and Caffrey were providing an avenue to goal and Cox and Waters were breaking up the play with their hard running. But Old Ivanhoe with a place in the Grand Final at stake lifted and found plenty in the second half of the quarter. They kicked the next four, with Lochran and Shadboldt both kicking clever goals and their midfield of Haros and Donaldson starting to find more of the ball . Their ruck/centre half forward combination of J . Weddle and Hope also started to fire moving the ball from the ruck contest and providing marking targets around the ground. By the time the half time siren sounded the two sides were still locked together with Marcellin holding a slender five point lead . Old Ivanhoe picked up where they had left in the third quarter and added another two goals to hit the front for the first time in the game . Old Ivanhoe's dependable back line led by Kent was able to quieten Marcellin's spearhead Treganowen and the signs were looking positive for Old Ivanhoe . But again, the game saw a slight shift in momentum with Marcellin scoring twice in the third quarter to regain the lead. With their noses in front and having countered Old Ivanhoe's surge . Marcellin's midfielders in Cox, Waters and Dinneen continued to run and create scoring opportunities . The quarter saw both sides add two goals and the game still hung in the balance . Perhaps the defining moment of the game came late in the quarter. Old Ivanhoe had worked the ball forward and had created what appeared to be a certain goal . But Marcellin's Moran in an inspired chase and tackle mowed down his Old Ivanhoe opponent . The ball rebounded and Marcellin kicked the winning goal .

OLD TRINITY V. OLD IVANHOE, PRELIMINARY FINAL

Old Ivanhoe liv e again in the Preliminary Final but the cost of the lo; last week is high as they meet the Elsternwick Pat specialists Old Trinity. Old Trinity confounded the students of form wil their display a fortnight ago against North Old Bo, when they got over the line in a high quality clash . Old Trinity obviously enjoy the spaces Elsternwick Park and their skilful possession orient2 ed game play is better suited to the kinder Septemb conditions .

The keys up forward are Stickland at full forwa and Heath . In the midfield they have a number options including Allibon, Burrows, Andrews ai Kennedy. Ramsden is a handful for the opposition r. just in the ruck contest but also with his ability t o utindefnceorsneakforwad sagolscor i option . However Old Ivanhoe are also strong in t ruck and can use either Weddle or Hope in the ru and will no doubt throw all of them at Ramsden o) the day . Old Ivanhoe's success this year has be based around a game plan that centres on reboundi the ball out of the backline into a open forward line up . Kent and R . Weddle hold down the key defens posts and runners such as Jenkins . Veal and You initiate many fonvard thrusts off the half back line . The problem for Old Ivanhoe might not be h many goals they concede, but how many they can ki In good conditions on the large EP oval it is unlik that Old Ivanhoe will be able to keep Old Trinity's singoptquealdynothbsiOlTr r should be able to kick a winning score . Old Trinity by 23 points .

C SECTION by Russell Goul d

t is a bit hard to write the column this week as the e nÂŤPrinrr mv face is hindering mv vision . Yes egg 1 You see I twice picked against the Rovers in tnis tmals series, and twice they have won . Congratulations to them on firstly their victory, and secondly on making the Grand Final, and 'B' section for season '99 . After their 'D' Section flag in 1995, they had a couple of very lean seasons, and in particular last year when they only just managed to stave off relegation . And when I say just I mean just . They finished the regular season with just 5 wins, equal with Monash Blues, but a percentage break of 18% saw them remain in 'C' section for this season . This year they won 11 matches, an increase of more than 100% and they have now made the jump to the next level. That is a feat that should not be under- . stated . and credit must go to all at their club who have turned it around this year and made the absolute most of their finals opportunities, forcing a lot of sceptics to think again. To Old Mentonians, another finals series defeat should prove a spur for season '99, although I am sure that is a long way from their thoughts . However credit to them on a fine season, and to Adam Acreman for booting 100 goals . Preliminary Final Review - Old Mentonians v Hampton Rovers

On a perfect day for football it was Hampton Rovers who opened up impressively against Old Mentonians last week at the Beach Oval (soon to become the Trevor Barker Oval) . Solley and Brooks were prominent for the Panthers . while the Andersons (Drew and Stephen) were providing their forwards with plenty of opportunities. Power (HR) and Stroud (OM) reaping the rewards . At the half it was the Rovers by 3 points . with the all important "premiership" quarter to prove the Panthers death knell. While keeping the Panthers goalless the Rovers added 4 themselves with Browne, Parkinson and Blick coming to the fore . Youngsters Palmer and Stephen worked tirelessly and showed that they will be good senior performers in the years to come, while Whitford too kept the Panthers within striking distance although some 28 points in arrears . The final quarter was tense with both sides attacking at every opportunity. unfortunately for the Panthers Acreman could not break free and with the Rovers fonaard line on song they added 3 to the Panthers 5 to advance to the Grand Final against the Sharks and gain promotion for 1999 . Rese rv es - Old Geelong v Beaumari s In a thrilling match from go to whoa the Oggers finished the stronger booting 5 second half goals to 4 to pinch a I point victory over the Sharks . Straighter kicking by the Sharks could well have seen them advance to challenge the Tigers today, however this was not to be . -

Grand Final Preview - Beauma ris v Hampton Rover After 18 games, three finals, and a lot of traini r sessions, it has come down to this . Two teams are le only one will hoist the cup aloft come late this aft e noon . Who will it be ? I think it will be Beaumaris, ( . In their two regular seasaherIwiltyou encounters, the Sharks twice defeated the Rovers, f¢ up by 34 points, and second time round a more co vincing 72 points . On both occasions the Sharks ma forwards kicked more than two goals each, whilst thi defence both times limited the Rovers to just 10 a then 11 goals . In their two finals to date, the Rove have managed just 6( granted in ordinary condition : and then again that 11 goals, from what is a good f ward line at best . The Sharks forward line on the ott hand is very good . Mahmoud, Mills, Vance, and a number of other players can, and have kicked goals Beauy this year, and their season average of 21 go per game is the best evidence of a very potent offen Adam Power threatened early in the year to be a goalkicker for the Rovers, but he has struggled in second half of the year and if he doesn't kick lots goals . neither do the Rovers. I think he is too flashy < is easily stopped by a quality defender, of which Sharks have a couple to choose from . The mid-field battle though should prove an intri ing one . Neither team has a ruckman who will win ev contest, take 7 or eight marks around the ground . ~ get 15 possessions . Every ball up and throw in will t chance affair . Whichever of the onball brigade reads ball best will be the initiator of the next play, rather t a ruckman delivering the ball perfectly to his ro Murray Pitts is the Sharks most prolific ball getter, was injured in the first final, a shoulder or arm it N so whether he is at his best remains to be seen . Rovers have Stephen Anderson and their skipper ' Mckellar around the packs . one usually feeding to other, a long kick forward the result of the by play . ', kick must though be a big one on the expanses of and if Parkinson hangs around centre half forwart the Rovers, he could find himself seeing a lot of the' . Then there are the Artz boys . Consistently in the Ro best throughout the season . solid performances I them will also go a long way to getting the Rovers hc But away from those five or six . and maybe one or others, the Rovers fall down . The Sharks on the c hand have up to 13 . 14 or even 15 players who ee any stage be controlling proceedings . Without nai them all they combine to make an extremely classy fit that have proven throughout the year that the , ..,_ - t__ _L . .... .,..i . ,, .,A +i . .,t oll tha ntharc mist f`at[`It t

if they want success . Sixteen wins . just two losses, and at least three players with upwards of 35 goals each make them my selection as Premiers, the margin . 32 points . Reserves Grand Final - St .Bedes Mentone Tigers v Old Geelong 1998 has been a good year for the Tigers . All three senior teams made the finals, the Seniors and Under 19's though falling short of the Grand Final, and the Reserves are looking to repeat their success of'97 . Out to stop them are arch rivals Old Geelong, their Reserves their only finals participants . their only flag hope . This match is a repeat of the second semi fmal, won comfortably by the Tigers . the margin just under 9 goals. This however is the Grand Final, and if last year is anything to go by . the result is far from decided. It was last year the Tigers were defeated by their eventual Grand Final opponents in their first final, then having to face a cut-throat preliminary final to make the big one . It is the threat of bowing out and losing your chance that can propel you to victory one week later. This year it is the Oggers who have had to do that . And a more cutthroat final than last year theirs proved to be. They managed a I point victory in their preliminary final and so come in to this weeks match knowing all too well what it takes to win . The Tigers had the week off, anxious in the knowledge that their chance was coming, comforted by the fact they had been their before, and prevailed . This contest will not be one won by smarter match-ups, crisp skilis, or even intelligent coaching. This will be won by the team that doesn't break under the pressure. It will be on from the start . Bodies will be crunching in to each other at a constant rate, each contest more trying than the other as both teams attemp to grab the upperhand. Mental and physical exhaustion come in to play a lot earlier in a grand final than in any other game, and it is the team that better handles this that will win . In their last contest, the Tigers were calm. executed well, and were on top early. and the Oggers never recovered . For all their emotion, they were just not up to the Tigers on that day . And sadly for them, I'm not sure this day will be any different. The Tigers know how to win a Grand Final . Last year they got on top early, and won . If they can do that again this year, the Oggers will not catch them, and that is the way I see this one going . The verdict, Tigers by 25 points .

D SECTION by Ken Bremner Tom Brai n , t t long last . after a jam packed season of footy ~~treats were down to the 'big one, the one tha t counts for the most, the Grand Final . To the Players, Officials, Members and Supporters of the competing clubs, both Tom and I wish you every success in your endeavours and we also trust that sportsmanship above all else, wins through . That is, that the victor(s) can remain humble and the vanquished be gracious . In conclusion, thanks again to everyone who has assisted us throughout the season to help bring you this report. Without the support . Tom and I could not have fulfilled the role . Review - Preliminary Final (September 5) Reserv es - Ajax V Southban k Ajax advanced to the Grand Final courtesy of a gallant and gritty performance over an equally resolute Southbank . It was an extremely low scoring and defensive game with very little separating the teams throughout the day . At 3 qtr time, leading by only 3 points and defending against a strong breeze . the 'Jackas' hopes looked forlorn to say the least . To a degree, Southbank may have thought the wind would do it for them, but this would surely be understating the supreme effort the 'Jaekas' raised in the term . The game concluded in controversy over a mark taken right on the siren in front of goal by a Southbank forward . I'm sure a replay would vindicate the umpires decision to not pay the 'grab' . This was only one 'if or 'but' situation throughout an absorbing game and it would be grossly unfair to hinge the result on it . The game was there for the taking by the 'Bankers' and they failed to capitalise on their chances whilst Ajax, especially in the last stanza grasped theirs . Well done to both teams on a fine performance throughout the entire season, not just Saturday gone, and best of luck to Ajax in the OF . Seniors - Southbank V Ajax Disappointing that one of the clubs lost out in what was keen rivalry throughout season '98 . Ajax went into the game with 6 changes and several players carrying injuries . Mind you, they weren't Robinson Crusoe in that matter. The 'Jackas' bad luck continued early on in the game when Blashki and Jeremy Wrobel collided in a freak accident resulting in the latter being stretchered from the ground . Ajax settled down well given the circumstances and got their running game going to snag a string of goals together to hold a commanding qtr time lead . Southbank failed to make any great impression through the 2nd stanza and at the long break. trailing by 23 pts looked dispirited and to all intents and purposes out of the contest . A different Southbank took to the field in the 3rd qtr and by .flooding the Ajax forward zone and in turn lift. .. .. . .

(M Rundle. . . . . . . would this be a record of sorts? KB/TB The 'Jackas'deserved more than their poor finish afte such a courageous season, but full credit t Southbank who go into the GF full of running an confidence . Best for Ajax were Halphen and Kalinsl in defence whilst up forward Rosen and Freund ba tled hard all day . Jason Wrobel and Blashki did we on the ball whilst Gelbart and Weisler showed son signs of form . For the victors . Hodgson was a gran contributor all dav all with Lancie Van Loon, Ki Waiford . Robt . Putamorsi . Mark Eastham and Job McNamara . Others to shine out especially after he time were Timmy Murphy. Cameron Morgan, Just! Nugent . Aaron Rhodes . Danny Howarth and Tor Roifs . Preview (Grand Final) - September 1 2 Rese rves - Whitefri ars V Ajax - (KB) The playir stocks at the 'Jackas' are decimated at present ar certainly not helped out by last weeks tough and ha games against Southbank . Whilst Ajax may be it position to drop back a few senior list players, tl 'Friars' can have an open slather policy at selection I virtue of having both senior teams in the grand fin aAdetohisbnufawekrstdhp s chological advantage of having defeated Ajax in t : 2nd semi final . If the game was only scheduled for qtr's I'd give the 'Jackas' a real chance, however the qtr duration will suit the 'Friars' admirably and I co fidentlv select them to be victorious by 30 pts . IT You really KB are in an inspired mode this weekei Kenny, all your reasoning is perfect so who am I disagree . Seniors - Whitefri ars V Southbank - (KB) Y don't need to be an Einstein to fathom it out that t 'Friars' have it all set up for them . En masse Mordialloc last week the Whitefriars contingent mi have been giggling to themselves as they witnessed t hard slog between the 'Bankers' and the 'Jacke Minor Premiers . a weeks rest in hand and you havi text book recipe for a grand final victory. Not neo sarily so says old KB (wise one as we know), consic the following : (i) Whitefriars have contested only 1'hard' mat in about 4 weeks : (ii) Southbank are without dou match hardened, confident and free of any pressur e ____ÂŤ ,.. ._,., .. ..t.,. .,,. . ., ..A r. ; ;t 6, rr,t,,,rl 7r Linlv 9F1 rt

tested between these 2 teams at 'Yarra' Park . Southbank lost the battle (13 pis) but to all present (excepting Whitefriars personnel) they had gone a very long way to winning the WAR! If body language counts for anything, then Southbank players touted that they wouldn't again succumb if there was to be a next time .

Guess what? Next time has arrived . It promises to be a classic encounter of youth and exuberance versus experience and strength . Don't be surprised if it develops into a Tortoise and Hare extravaganza, and if it does, then the 'Bankers' can have supreme confidence in their ability to fight their way back into contention following last week's herculian performance . Southbank will have their hands full in containing the likes of Robinson, Carrigg and Pawlick up forward, Pasqualotto and Bateman on ball and the 'General' Cam Houston down the back half. Meanwhile the 'Friars' will have to contend with a particularly strong midfield, a miserly defence and a workmanlike attack . With the greatest of respect to Whitefriars . I've got to wear my heart on my sleeve and select Southbank to win by the narrowest of margins . 1 pt. (TB) What a great summation KB not much point me adding any rubbish to that except to say that I hope the margin is not as close as 1 point as I don't think that my weak heart could handle it . All your above reasons are correct, it's fitting that Nos . 1 and 2 on the ladder are playing for the ultimate glory they have been the standouts and although everything points to a Friars victory I'm tipping against those odds and going for Southbank .

VALE : BRIAN LAUDER

Parkside lost a Champion when Brian Lauder passed away on Thursday September 3 . He had battled a grave illness with great courage and dignity . Brian joined Parkside in 1954 as a 20 year old and played full-forward in the C Section Champion team of that year. In a 250 game career, "Harry" captained Parkside, topped the VAFA goal kicking, and coached the D Section reserves Premiership team in 1971 . Brian made his greatest impression on Parkside as President where he led the club with great pride and dedication . He joined the VAFA Executive in 1974 and was Manager of several representative teams . During and (8) year break in Qld, Brian was thrilled to hear of Parkside's rise to A Section and the extension and renovations of the clubrooms . Upon his return to the club, Brian was the driving force behind the Parkside FIDA team and impressed the new generation of Parksiders with his character and commitment . Brian's many friends at Parkside and throughout the VAFA will treasure their memories of a great clubman and individual . Deepest sympathy is extended to Brian's family

So do you see the pattern, last year Southbank were relegated and went straight back up, this year both Caulfield and Camberwell who were relegated have gone straight back up . Therefore, the rest of E Section we need to improve . 'c'mon teams' lets stop the trend next year. In brief, the 1998 season was another success (for most) so well done to Caulfield on being Premiers, well done to all finalists and well done to all other teams who competed in E Blue and again with better recruiting, pre-seasons etc . maybe a long time E grader will be promoted at the end of next season . THE GRAND FINAL In a rather timid (quiet) opening both teams seemed to struggle with the general nerves factor . The ball handling skills were all over the place early let alone some of the kicking skills . However, it was Caulfield who settled down first and managed a minor lead (4 goal breeze) at the quarter time interval . For mine I didn't think Caulfield had done nearly enough with the wind, but for some reason Camberwell were struggling with it as well . Again, general poor delivery and some excellent defence caused most of the turn overs . so come half time, Caulfield who managed a couple against it were still in there and looking the goods . After the main break . Caulfield again started slowly and Camberwell took advantage of this by posting a few against a softening breeze . However, cool heads prevailed and Caulfield through a better forward setup managed to steady the ship and come three quarter time had a reasonably handy lead . Starting the last quarter. I generally thought if Camberwell could start to hold their marks up forward then the minor lead that Caulfield had didn't generally seem to be enough . From the opening bounce though of the last term Caulfield continued to apply the most pressure and thus put the necessary 'runs on the board' . So against a changing/ lessening breeze Caulfield did the majority of the attacking in the final stanza and ended up

running out fairly comfortable winners by 32 points. IN THE MAGOO S As predicted (bad luck Matty and the boys) Old Camberwe ll proved to be too big, too strong and generally too fast on the day . However, Caulfield who put up a great fight by leading at all 3 changes (only just) unfortunately tired a little and the class of Camberwell came across . In the end Old Camberwell (only one loss) for the year were worthy premiers. Just a short finishing touch, I thought I would attempt to highlight a possible chance from each club in the VAFA's Vote Count (Monday week) . Caulfield Grammarians - D . Anderson, Old Camberwe ll - T. Hardman, Peninsula - C . Landry, Oakleigh - C. Marshall, Chirnside Park - B . Pedler, Power House - S. Craven, Swinbune Uni - J . Dell'Olio. Elsternwick - L . Murphy, Glenhuntly T. Rossiter, St. Ma rys - B . Frail . All the best to all over the summer and I hope to see you all again on the playing fields of the VAFA next year . Go Pirahna's in '99 .

HIV AND HEPATITIS IN SPORT : THE LEGAL ISSUES ~j~hat do Hepatitis B and AIDS have to do with ~f , foot- ball coaching? Not much you could say . No one you know is HIV-positive or has been diagnosed with Hepatitis B . You may already have trainers who don't wear rubber gloves when they treat a bleeding player . If you were vaccinated for Hepatitis B during the first panic in the early 1992's, then you are probably dragging your feet about getting booster shots . So what are the risks of contracting either of these diseases through sport? HIV: HUMAN IMMUNO-DEFICIENCY VIRUS HIV is not only transmitted sexually. Direct inoculation of infected blood . whether by intravenous dry use, needle stick injuries or. potentially, by blood contact injuries between athletes participating in sport, can result in infection. Because HIV initially causes an acute viral illness from which individuals usually recover. followed by an extended period of years with no further symptoms, it is possible for a sportsman to have the disease and be unaware of it . It has not been shown that the disease can be transmitted through contact with the sweat or spit of an infected person or through ordinary physical contact during sporting events. There is no vaccine available, so precautions taken in handling blood are critical in preventing infection . HEPATITIS B Hepatitis B infection can follow two pathways . Acute Hepatitis B infection may be symptomless, or it may cause fever, vomiting, jaundice and other symptoms which require hospitalisation . However, the death rate is very small, less than one per cent, with most cases becoming non-infectious in three to six months. Chronic Hepatitis B may be a symptomless infection which progresses insidiously, leading to liver cancer, cirrhosis and other lethal ill nesses . Hepatitis B infection, like HIV, may be transmitted sexually . by direct inoculation of infected blood or . potentially by blood contact injuries between competing athletes . It may also be transmitted by splashing body fluids, other than blood, on to mucous membranes, such as the eyes . Infection can also occur through M

TNF GMATFI IR F(1(1TRAI I FR 1

relatively minor cases of inoculation through the skin, for example, by sharing razors . While HIV/AIDS is getting the publicity, it is Hepatitis B which is more widespread and more easily transmitted. THE RISK OF INFECTION There has been work done on the statistical risk of HIV or Hepatitis B transmission in sport. While this shows the risk is small, it is greatest where a bleeding wound from an infected athlete conies into contact with an open lesion on the skin of an infected athlete/official . In football, aggressive physical contact is permitted by the rules . As a result, injuries will occur that involve blood being shed . Coaches should ensure that players have blood cleaned away promptly . This should reduce the risk of disease transmission to an uninfected player. On the basis that it is trainers who specifically treat all player injuries, it is trainers who are most at risk . As there is no requirement for testing of athletes for either disease, it is sensible to take precautions when dealing with blood or treating wounds . Arrange for players, coaching and support staff to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B or have booster shots to maintain protection. Ensure that trainers are aware of the risk of infection . The Australian Sports Medicine Federation has developed an infectious diseases' policy which advocates: - strict personal hygiene - Hepatitis B vaccination where contract is permitte d - Prohibiting sharing of towels, razors, drink containers and similar items . - Stop bleeding and replace all contaminated clothing and equipment before participation in the game is resumed . THE LEGAL POSITION The legal position with regard to proof of disease transmission in sport is an extremely complex one . Any athlete with an infection has a duty of responsible care not to injure other players . But because a player may not know he is infectious, there is no substitute for taking the above precautions . Based on an article that appeared in the Coaching Update magazine July 1998 .

~ enes' is the French name for the Italian port of Genoa . 'Genes' also became the name of a style of trousers worn by Geonese sailors . 'Serge d e Nimes' was a tough blue sailcloth made in Nimes in Southern France, it was shortened to 'denim' . Levi Strauss was a Bavarian who emigrated to New York in 1843, joining his brothers in a business supplying goods for the California Gold Rush . In the 1860's Levi's company starting making the Genoese trousers from the Nimes blue sailcloth, strengthening them with brass horse-harness rivets at the pockets and seams . So, a German immigrant, using French material, and Italian styling, invented America's gift to the world . 'Blue Jeans' . Just as any specials' gene pool relies on diversity for successful survival, so do Clubs and Associations . Have a look at the Kew and Old Carey team lists, each has Italian, German and French names, plus Greek, Briton, Angle, Saxon, Norse, and Celt . Richard Evans praised the role of District Clubs, such as Kew, emphasising how vital they are to the secure future of the VAFA . by adding variation to the Association structure . Kew have had a magnificent year, three teams in Grand Finals, promotion for the Seniors, and a Flag for the Reserves . Well done Rob Furlan, and everybody at Victoria Park Reserve. Thanks again to John Montgomery and the Old Scotch crew for the Camberwell finals, you were just terrific . Also thanks to Norm Walsh of Oakleigh Amateurs for our one day at the Scammell . The field, boundary and goal umpires did their Umpires Advisors proud . Well done chaps, and Becky. And special thanks to Richard Evans and Ian Munro for their efficient handling of all matters administrative throughout the series . RESERVES GRAND FINA L

Kew grabbed the Flag with both hands right from the first bounce and never looked like letting it go . While it was a defence dominated game, the standard of the football was top shelf. George Bakogiannis at CHF was Kew's star, followed closely by Robbie Bruno in midfield, Rowdy Harrison on the ball, and Nick Peters on a wing . For the C's, Leigh Small's strength and long kicking were inspirational . Chris Withington and Jack Farmer worked hard on the ball all day, but the K's were just too good. SENIOR GRAND FINAL The C's opening quarter didn't worry the K's . They reckoned it was a 5 goal wind, so that was a six goal lead . Old Carey did catch their attention when they kicked 7 goals against the wind to Kew's 2 goals with it though . Everett, Esler . Campbell,

and Birkill dominated the midfield, and the C's defence shu t out all but the inimitable Jamie Bell . Kew had problems with the C's versatile forward set up, and while they regrouped and did better in the second half it was all too late Even in the dodgy wind, the C's forwards had the confidence to go for the hard goals, and mostly i happened for them . Dean Wood gave a great dis play of crumbing round the ground, Sam Brun( battled on against spirited opponents . and Jami, Bell played effectively in defence and attack . Th, C's didn't really have a weak link, and the back lines led by Captain and CHB Cam Matthews heli a potent attack to an ordinary score ; the midfield ers and on-bailers, while curbed a little in the sec end half were too mobile for their opposition an the players mentioned above plus Chris Wrigh Matt Cohen and Hedgie Hickey were outstandinl For coach, Glenn Taylor, the day was a triumpi his talented set of youngsters were at their peak ft the big day of the year . And for the Club, after 1 long years, at last a Flag! ! To people such as Howard Bishop, Max and V Evans, John Hands, Erick Dick, James McQu and all those who kept the Club alive in the dreai dark years, last weeks result was a fitting tribut e So, this scribe mothballs his sadly phthistic t< ents for the year with the heartiest thank?; to P1 Stevens . ts all over! And what a cracker to finish with . An absolute ornament to Amateur football an d enjoyed by all who watched it . GRAND FINAL REVIEW - MONASH GRYPHONS V HAWTHORN AMATEUR S

FIRST QUARTER Monash won the toss and kicked with the agency of a stiff breeze which was blowing to the Cramer St . end . After the initial frenzy. Monash settled the better and with Bennett proving slippery on a HFF had soon established a handy lead . The Gryphons were willing to run to support their team mates and were hard at the footy . With the first break approaching, they led by 5 goals but a last minute into the wind goal to Stu Avery reduced the deficit . Even though the breeze was reasonably strong, the Gryphs would have been pleased with their efforts. SECOND gUARTE R Hawthorn started the second quarter strongly and with a couple of quick goals, the quarter time lead did not seem too insurmountable . The Gryphons rallied however as their star CHB, Rob Rafaniello, came into his own providing drive throughout the backline . An against the wind goal by John Blandford helped maintain the Gryphs lead until the last few minutes when the elusive Mick O'Brien took the game by the scruff of the neck with a goal himself as well as setting one up . The Hawks managed to get their noses in front at time by a couple of points . THIRD gUARTER The Gryphs hit the ground running in the third quarter and piled on the goals . Grady and Hetherington were having an impact in the middle whilst up forward Healey and Wells were creating nuisances of themselves . Ten minutes into the quarter the Gryphs led by 5 goals and whilst not out of their reach . the Hawks would have been concerned with their position . They really nutted it out for the rest of the quarter in what would prove to be the most pivotal time of the game . Shane Parker was particularly good as he quelled the dangerous Tim Gilchrist . Nonetheless a four goal deficit at three quarter time in Grand Final means a lot of hard work was required . FOURTH gUARTE R The Hawks started exactly how they would have wanted with a couple of quick goals . They finally hit

the lead at about the ten minute mark and with the wind still

blowing were going to be hard to catch . The Gryphons continued to appl} the pressure and a tense battle in the midfie locuredwithnslgoceda r easy possession . A wayward pass gave the Gryph: an opportunity to surge forward but an absolutf clutch mark by Hawk Grant Broadley managed tc steady the ship . Two more goals through the agenc, of Paul Barker and Dan Lauletta sealed the gam for the Hawks . The Hawks were best served by Stu Avery whi spent some time at CHB when his younger brothe Phil was injured in a marking contest . Also gooi were Chris Reed in the centre, Darren Hutchinsoi in the ruck, Nathan Patterson roving, Paul Orchar in defence and Mick O'Brien whose display of ski was fabulous to watch . For the vanquishec onballer Justin Hetherington was his usual soli self. skipper Lee Wells set up numerous attack: Tank Davev at Full Back and Rob Rafaniello CHB . A great year for both clubs who will be joyed I make the move back into the salubrious ranks of section in a far better state than they were prev ously in . RESERVES West Brunswick were also able to celebrate victory when they overwhelmed Eley Park by aboi fifteen goals . The standard of the game was hi~ and after an even first quarter it looked like a cla game was on hand . However, Eley Park stopped a walk whilst the Westies rolled on and on . P doubt Brunswick would have been a great place be on Saturday night .

Old Paradians, beaten by Uni . Blacks in the second semi, went to a 6 goal lead in the first quarter only to see Blacks come back and lead narrowlv at half time . Parade again took a good lead in the third term and maintained their advantage until the finish, 21 .13 to 15 .14 . De La Salle went to an early lead in 'C' and then withstood a strong challenge by Parkside in the last quarter to take out the flag, 6 .12 to 5 .8 .

One competition that has been won is the BLADES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION . Well done again to the Old Xaverians' club who win the $2,000 major prize which will be presented to the club during Monday's Vote Count Evening . Unfortunately this year no clubs qualified for availabl e bonus points by having the required number of players consistently wearing Blades football boots in VAFA matches or by purchasing Blades apparel through VAFA Properties . Thanks to Blades Peter Warner for supporting this competition . Peter and I will have to "dream" up a new set of criteria for next year to come up with a new winner. Seriously congratulations to the a ll conquering Xavs .

TRIPLE M KICK-OFF A HUGE SUCCESS There were 60 entrants in the father and son/daughter long kic k competition and an estimated 250 on-lookers last Saturday at Elsternwick Park . Everyone enjoyed the giveaways and one $1000 prize went to the dad/over 14 son or daughter team and another 81000 to the dad/under 13 son or daughter team . Triple M has already promised to become more involved in supporting the VAFA in 1999 .

at we've ~_=' bee-- w,-.' ,ing for Grand Final Day Review Section 1

The Old Paradians started the better of the two teams, however it was De La Salle who steadied the better after half time to hold a solid advantage at the half. Curran and Cosgriff had been prominent up forward, although the D's aerial strength was showing out . Bailey . Pedacini and Clancy standing out particularly. The third term was by far the most entertaining. Both teams attacked the goals feverishly, with the OP's taking the lead mid way through the term with disciplined running and teamwork . O'Shea and Talarico doing their utmost . with Richardson . Collins and Szewezyk also doing well . At the last break a small advantage was held by the D's of some 4 points. The OP's attacked early to hit the front although a steadier De La Salle team with Forer, O'Donnell and Bonnici dominant, found the spaces to their liking and maintained their ascendancy to advance to the Grand Final . Section 2 Poor kicking early could well have seen Whitefriars throw awav their chances of another shot at Old Scotch when they had booted only 3 goals from 13 shots at the half. The more even St . Bedes Mentone Tigers unit led at both quarter and half time . The Friars through Winch and O'Meara were battling hard, while for the Tigers Drury and Ryan were giving their all . The premiership quarter proved a dour struggle with neither side giving anything away, although the Friars did manage to hold the Tigers which would eventually set up a barnstorming finish . Reid, Anderson, and Duffy moved into top gear to add 6 final quarter goals to 2 to avenge their most recent defeat by the Tigers . For the gallant Tigers none tried harder than Mizzi, P . Wintle and Tesoriero . Section (2) Blue

Fine conditions and a fast surface greeted both teams with Hampton Rovers taking advantage of what little breeze there was in their match against Old Mentonians . Jenkin was prominent up forward, as to was Humphries, with Duddy and Hogan having an enthralling battle in the ruck . Drinan, Martin and R . Alexander were battling hard for the Panthers but to no avail and with Cripps and Woods (HR) defending stoutly, the Panthers were unable to use the wind to their advantage in the second . Wilmott and Landrigan proving headaches up forward for the Panthers as the Rovers held a solid 5 goal advantage

at the half . An even third quarter followed with Norris . Kennedy and Ballantine giving their all for the Panthers however neither team could break away, although Adams was looking dangerous for t . However it was not until thRoversatCw hlast eRovrsbkeawytosurehmlv ; another crack to MHSOB today. Section (2) Re d An even first half prevailed at Bundoora whe urOldIvanhoewkigthrdconse live match over Warringal and more importantl} advance to the Grand Final . The Redbacks had man~ chances to hold the advantage, however their lack o accuracy proved costly . On the other hand Davis an( Logan were on target for OIG . and their lead at th+ half although small was enough to springboard strong (7) goal to (3) second half, and eventuate in great win . Sloan, Anderson and Thomson were promi nent for the Redbacks, while a "Team Effort" wa recorded for OIG (giving nothing away for today) . Preview

Section 1 Third time both Old Xaverians and De La Sail, will meet for the season today and unfortunately fo the D's 10 goal thumpings both times would sugges todav will not be for the D's . Finals however are dil ferent and with their tails up the D's will throw ever\ thing they possibly can at the Xavs from the star Clancy must start well and kick a bag, while Har Mercuri. Buick and Aron will again be heavily relie upon to carry the bulk of the load . For the Xav Oswald may well be the key, with Skidmore, Hedf Farrow and Coughlan bound to be fired up to not lf this one slip . Too good and strong all year the Xau are today to become Premiers and Champions ft 1998 .

Selection : Old Xaverians . Section 2 Whitefriars earned the right for another shot the title that mid-season not many would hai argued would be threatened . Some 4 months on an the Friars have had to earn their Grand Final spot it hard way, while Old Scotch won through after con pleting a routing of the Friars two weeks ago . Hug Thomas fired last time they met and booted I majors . his contribution today will no doubt have bearing on the result, while the Friars . Phai Anderson, Winch and Setches will need to t watched . Both teams have the ability to boot hul

scores and given fine weather both mid-fields should relish the conditions at Scammell Reserve . Although defeated in the Second-Semi the Friars fought back strongly last week and will continue on today to take the premiership . Selection: Whitefriars Section ( 2) Blue MHSOB will start red hot favourites after 3 times this year defeating Hampton Rovers. Two weeks ago in perfect conditions the game opened furiously and it was the High who settled better to pull away in the second half and win convincingly . Last week the Rovers won a scrappy affair, although their last quarter finish was full of running and their field kicking and team work was impressive . Duddy will have a huge influence on the match, while Adams will need to be watched for his freaky skills . Quon, Anderson and Rehn . combined with Wilmott and Flahive will give plenty of drive to the Rovers however the High look too accomplished . The O'Briens are both driving forces . while Rodder's pace will prove handy down back . The Taylors are dangerous likewise McCully, Ware . Parker and Simpson who are strong runners and key play-makers. Overall the High should prevail in a close match .

Selection: MHSOB

Section (2) Re d Yarra Valley have taken the advantage in their (3) previous meetings with Old Ivanhoe 2/l, although neither team would concede to be outright favourites . Both possess the ability to score quickly, have fine skills and are the two best teams in the section . If I had to select a winner neither would want me to select them, as my selections have more often than not in this finals series lost . Willis, Dowd, Brannigan . Brandt and Davis have carried the bulk of the load this year for DIG and will need to be on song today, whereas Tyshing, the Reynolds', Lang, Midland and Arnot have done likewise for the Valley. Both teams will approach the game with confidence, with attacking football the highlight expected . In a toss of the coin DIG get my vote . Selection : Old Ivanhoe

I Old Mentonians - congratulations to Wes Ballantine who last week kicked his 100th goal for the season . Only the second player to reach this milestone all at the club congratulate Wes on a magnificent effort .
