. . . FROM THE DESK OF

FROM THE PRESIDEN T v first year as President of the VAFA has certainly DAbeen one that has kept me on my toes . Off the field there have many political issues that have had to be dealt with which have been well covered in the media . On the field I have been pleased that the playing of matches has been, in the main, played in good spirit with the standard of matches extremely high. Phil Stevens wrote in this column last week of the need to win and lose well and last weekend most reports suggest some extraordinary acts of good sportsmanship were witnessed . With the playing part of the season closing today I would like to thank the Chairman of the Executive Richard Evans and other members of the Executive Committee who have served the Association so well and in particular the "old campaigners" Noel Rundle . John Dillon an d David Burnes who have been guiding lights when I have needed a second or third opinion . To Phil Stevens . Sue Anderson, Brett Conne ll and

F ROM THE DESK OF ll here we are again and as Eddie (of "Footy UTShow" fame) would say "what a big year it has been in Amateur football!!" There seems to have been more controversies than in past seasons and also some great highlights . To me, that we were able to give our better players the recognition they deserve by fielding three representative teams was terrific, as is the fact that we are coming off a finals series that has been keenly contested and has given some clubs the opportunity to see all their on and off field efforts rewarded by gaining promotion to a higher section . I have once again felt enormous pride in carrying out my role as Chief Executive Officer and if the season has been deemed a success it has only been because I have been fortunate enough to be the head of a team dedicated to giving of their best in their individual areas of allocated responsibility . To Sue Anderson and Bre tt Connell I thank them most sincerely. For the last couple of years since there has been no direct "second in charge" in the adminiscrative structure. Brett and Sue have assumed more duties and have performed them in an outstanding manner. Our "first face" to the public Angela Giles has continued to impress with her excellent phone manner and in carrying out all the multitude of tasks that are

Each has the good of the ANDREW VAFA at heart and their LAIVGFORD-JONE support of the ExecuPRESIDENT tive and dedication to the smooth running of the Association is greatly apI ciated . I wish the remaining teams in Grand Finals I weekend all the very best . I congratulate B sect grand finalists Marcellin and Old Ivanhoe on becom A section teams for 1999 . To Old Xaverians and , Scotch it is a touch of deja vu and I hope that towa the end of the game the contest is as close as last y i In closing I assure evervone that the Executive be working tirelessly over the off-season to ensure t Amateur football in Victoria is as good if not better tl it has always been .

required by someone in her position . I sincerely thank the many other individuals who make extraordinary efforts to assist with the smooth running of Amateur football . I thank Andrew Langford-Jones and Richard Evans for their ability to communicate and assist me in PHIL STEVENS the day to day decision making which must CHIEF EXECU'I'IN OFFICE R take place . To David Burnes . Noel Rundle, John Dillon and Bruce McTaggart, in particular, wt have leaned on heavily (and often) for advice I thE most sincerely for always being there . I hope that this weekend's matches provide a ting climax to another great season . Finally - Noel Rundle's best team (1979= appears on page 39 .

A SECTION by Jason Frenke l

0 ne year after Old Scotch's heart-breaking 6 point loss to Old Xaverians in the 1997 Grand Final , and the Cardinals have earned the right to have another tilt at A-section's triple reigning premier . In a true indication of the club's persistence, Scotch overcame some damaging player losses over the summer and a wretched start to the season to beat a host of challengers for the only vacant spot on Grand Final day (Xavs having booked the other in April) . September would have been the furthest thing from Old Scotch coach Wayne Harmes' mind when Xavs caned them by 98 points earlier in the year leaving the Cardinals reeling with a 1-3 record - but they capped off a fantastic resurrection with a dogged preliminary final win against St . Bernards in the rain last Sunday at Elsternwick Park . REVIEW Scotch were able to adapt to the greasy conditions a lot quicker and more effectively than their highly-fancied opponents, and from the first bounce seemed more capable of kicking a winning score .

The Cardinals blended dour defensive work with some penetrating attack in the first term to help set up the club's second successive grand final appearance . Matt O'Brien and Tim Holt worked tirelessly at ground level in their defensive zones, while Gavin Eagle continued his fantastic negating work of late with a good job on Nick Mitchell . Some might query whether the Cardinals' goals last week perhaps contained more ass than class, but the fact of the matter is that most of their key forwards saw enough of the ball to give them a chance when the team went forward - play the percentages, and luck might just follow along too ! The Bernies were resolute, resilient and (they would argue) robbed. Two key players received threematch penalties on controversial tripping charge which denied Garry Foulds his most potent combination - I won't speculate on whether the inclusion of another two big men would have helped St . Bernards' cause in such terrible conditions - fans can argue it out among themselves . Suffice to say that the disappointed Bernies will be back next year - Luke Vassallo led the A-section goalkicking at season's end . and Luke Gollant was awarded the highly-coveted Woodrow Medal for the A_ section best and fairest on Monday night . Congratulations to Luke and the Bernies on a great year . PREVIEW Strong though Scotch may be, in Xaverians they confront a superpower . The VAFA's leading club has

shared just five losses between its senior, reserves and Under 19 teams, while its Club XVIII wen t through undefeated . The only blemish in an i ble years was their second Under 19 side, wh ished with a 6-11 record, but you get the pic t Tim O'Shaughnessy is looking to become tl coach, alongside Barry Richardson and Nick I to help the club to a quartet of premiership cul many years. In that time their skipper . the indoi Captain (Michael) Blood, has twice won th Nelson Medal for best on ground in the grar (1995 and 1997) and last year won the pre: Woodrow Medal for the A Section Best and player. It's said that a champion team will alwa ; well Xavs are a team ofyteamofchpins c ons ; well Xavs are a team of champions who p a champion team. Strong on every line, their cohesion comp] a tremendous work ethic and silky smooth sk They have an incredible array of scoring ( and host of hard working, highly skilled midi Their defence is miserly in negation, and efl creative in attack - watch for the likes of Dann, Holmes and co. to run the ball exquisi of the backline. Scotch may just have the defensive versa match it with Xavs' potent forward line . Rohz has hardly put a foot wrong all year while Gavi - who deserved Mark of the Year ahead of hi mate Aiden Boyd - is also playing tight, te . football in the key defensive post . Even up forward, Wayne Harmes might ju enough scoring options to convince his Cardin they can kick a winning score . Heath, Duthie and Phillips have all been contributing to if score in recent weeks, while Aiden Boyd is a p match-winner capable of kicking a bagful . In I only area of concern for Scotch may be their n Tom Wilson - always gallant in the ruck -fronthegratMichaelBod,whileth like s and Lethlean can quickly carve up any A-secti THANK YO U

A big thank you to all A section clubs and for making 1998 such a great year . A big ap anyone silly enough to use this column as a guide - just for the record . I think Xavs will w fortably today by I 1 goals (if it's dry) . Lastly . ~ "good luck" to today's combatants - may t team win .

B SECTION by Michael Georg e Although Old Trinity continued t o persist and made _ some progress on the scoreboard, with Ramsden back in the ruck after spending large part of the game in the forward line and on the bench and Allibon driving the ball forward out of the centre . However as hard as Old Trinity tried hard to overcome the deficit they struggled to penetrate the Old Ivanhoe backline . Jarrod Weddle and Kent both provided leadership and poise in the dying minutes of the game taking important defensive marks to hold out Old Trinitv .

REVIEW 0 Id Ivanhoe will meet Marcellin in the B Sectio n

Grand Final after defeating Old Trinity in an intense and physical Preliminary Final . Old Trinity started with the aid of a strong breeze in the first quarter but Old Ivanhoe were able to frustrate Old Trinity's attacking moves with close checking through the midfield and Kent playing as a loose man in the backline rebounding the ball out of defence . Old Ivanhoe scored first with Shadbolt pouncing on a loose ball in the goal square and the signs were looking good for Old Ivanhoe . However . as the quarter wore on the Old Trinity midfielders began to find space and Old Trinity kicked the last three goals late in the quarter to grab a two goal lead at quarter time . Old Trinity really started to look as though they were getting on top in the second quarter with goals coming from a classy Stickland snap followed by a similar effort from Pawsey which saw them go to a 27 point lead . But Old Ivanhoe as they had done the week before against Marcellin, regrouped and worked their way back into the contest by kicking the next three goals . But again Old Trinity were able to score a vital goal deep into time on when Stickland marked and goaled to restore their lead to two goals . By half time it appeared that Old Trinity was slightly on top. with Stickland firing up fonvard, Allibon, Stephens and Pawsey gathering possessions in the midfield and Balazsy mopping up across the backline they appeared to have the edge in the contest but Old Ivanhoe were still touch on the scoreboard and had been able to answer all the challenges Old Trinity had thrown at them . The third quarter saw Old Ivanhoe make the decisive move of the game . Shadbolt was a nightmare for the Old Trinity backline with his deceptive pace and accurate kicking and Jarred Weddle and Hope continued to present themselves as marking options in the forward line and Russian chipped in with a valuable goal . Donaldson began to pick up kicks around the ground and the backline led by Kent and Mansfield were able to restrict the Old Trinity to just four behinds for the quarter. While at three quarter time the margin was only 17 points the momentum appeared to have swung Old Ivanhoe's way . Old Ivanhoe managed two goals in the last quarter including a delightful running goal from Lochran that appeared to settle the contest .

MARCELLIN V. OLD IVANHOE, GRAND FINAL, ELSTERNWICK PAR K The finale of the season looks almost impossible to call . Marcellin have been on track for finals action all year and Old Ivanhoe burst into contention with a nine game winning streak during the second half of the season . A factor in the game could be Old Ivanhoe's more difficult passage to the Grand Final. They have had two tough games against Marcellin and Old Trinity . In contrast Marcellin at this stage of the season will have enjoyed the benefit's of a week's rest . However you do get the feeling that Old Ivanhoe after coming back from almost five goals down last week are going to take some stopping. They have a number of options in the ruck and in the key positions, which they used to good effect against Old Trinity with either Weddle and Hope taking their turn in the ruck . Marcellin have an excellent ruckman in Bovsen who played a significant role in their semi final win over Old Ivanhoe but have lost Theisz to injury which leaves Boysen to carry ruck duties against Old Ivanhoe's tag team method . Much of Marcellin's success this year has come from the drive generated by their talented midfield division consisting of competition Best and Fairest winner Dinneen, Waters and Cox. Old Ivanhoe have a combative and close checking midfield combination featuring Hares, Jenkins and Donaldson . Marcellin's goalscoring power comes from Treganowan . one of the competition's leading goalkickers and Purcell provides another leading option . In contrast Old Ivanhoe use a more unconventional set-up by rotating Hope and J . Weddle through cen-

tre half forward and using Shadbolt as a leading full forward . Both sides have strong backlines and looking back at the semi final plus the efforts of the Old Ivanhoe backline against Old Trinity this suggests that goals will be a precious commodity on Grand Final day . The result? It is a toss up between Marcellin's slight edge in class in its running players versus Old Ivanhoe's strengths in the ruck and in the key positions . Marcellin by 2 points .

C SECTIO N by Russell Gould schwIpp N other season of 'C' section has wound its way down to a close, and its final turn was one few of us expected . To all teams who fought out the seaso n well done for the games you won, not so well done on the games you lost, but we expect you to come back next year to give us another ride . Congratulations to Hampton Rovers and St . Bedes Mentone Tigers, winners of the seniors and reserves premierships . For the Tigers it was back to back flags, for the Rovers it was a cellar to roof climb . Review - Grand Final.

It was one of the best games of the year, if not the best, and the result was the best evidence of that . It was Hampton Rovers who defied all the pundits to outlast Beaumaris and take the game by just 5 points . Kicking into a stiff breeze in the first term, the Rovers started the better and managed the first goal . The Rovers tough and aggressive approach was not helping them with the umpires, but it did manage to hold the Sharks to just two goals for the term, and the difference was eight points at the first change . The Rovers continued to be hard at the ball in the second term, and now kicking with the breeze, they controlled proceedings and booted 6 goals to the Sharks two. Browne and Parkinson were dominating in the air, and at the long break, the Rovers found themselves up by 17 points. As strange a position as it may have seemed to many, it was not to the Rovers, and they remained settled in the third term. But as expected the Sharks came out a bit better . Their workrate picked up significantly, and they kicked two quick goals early to make things a bit closer. The rest of the quarter became a battle of the defences, the Sharks attacking a lot more, but the Rovers managed to hold them out. and went in to the final term up by two points . The Rovers wrestled back control early in the final term, and stretched the lead out to 15 points by the 12 minute mark . But Beauy were not done, and they fought back to level the scores as the game hit time on in the last term . The extra time rules started to be discussed, but the Rovers weren't having a bar of that . A

quick long kick in to their forward line resulted in a mark, and then a slick handball resulted in a goal for them. The Sharks had one final forav forward but time beat them, and ten minutes later, the Rovers song was heard long and loud, and the medallions were firmly around their necks . Well done Rovers . Reserves Grand Final. In stark contrast to last year, the St. Bedes Mentone Tigers came in to the game red hot favorites after their nine goal defeat of Old Geelong two weeks earlier. But with a stiff breeze blowing to one end of the ground, this game was not going to be one sided. The Oggers had first use of it, and gave the Tigers a good scare. Their long kicks and good running had them 3 goals up before the Tigers had scored . The Tigers got a goal though, and then another into the breeze, and were down by 2 goals at the first change . In the second term things were even early, but the Tigers turned it on. Owen Lalor kicked three of the Tigers six for the quarter, and they were stamping their class on the game . The Oggers managed a goal just before the bell, but still found themselves 3 goals down at the break . The third term was the lowest scoring of the game . The Oggers weren't capitalizing on the breeze, the Tigers defence solid under pressure, and the ball spent a lot of time away from the scoring areas . But the Tigers were still holding sway, and they held that three goal lead going in to the last term. The Oggers were not giving in, and they kicked the first goal of the term to bring the margin back to just two goals . and give themselves a little sniff. But the Tigers unit responded accordingly, and a succession of goals broke the Oggers, who very quickly found themselves 5 goals down, with little hope of changing the result. In the end it was a solid 30 point win the Tigers, who made it back to back flags. Well done Tigers .

D SECTION by Ken Bremne r & Tom Brai n ongratulations to the Whitefriar's Old Collegi ans Football Club on being crowned Champions an d Premiers for season 1998 . Worthy runners-up were the Southbank Football Club . Whilst the taste of defeat was initially bitter, it was, some 24 hours later compensated by the realisation of the level of success that had been achieved throughout the year i.e ., promotion . To the Ajax Football Club, the consolation of taking out the reserves premiership flag, something we suppose that would have been graciously declined for senior promotion and a shot at the big one . As both Tom and I depart 'D' Section, we wish to convey to all clubs who make up the competition next year all the very best of fortune, and trust that the summer months prove fruitful in both on and off field recruitment . Thanks to all the players, members, supporters and officials of all the clubs this season for their commitment and dedication to making it a memorable year. I'm sure, that on behalf of all 'D' section personnel, we can extend our congratulation to Cam Houston of Whitefriars on winning this years Best and Fairest award . The'General' won it with 22 votes just shading Cam Colliver of Aquinas and Andre Pitts of Southbank .

C

Review - Grand Final (September 12) Reserves - Whitefriars V Aja x The 'Jackas' jumped out of the gates like whippets and for most of the game the 'Friars' never got a sight of them again . With a few handy men back in the team . Ajax looked a lot more settled than the previous week and had a really good system and look about themselves . Whitefriars on the other hand appeared tentative and by the time they got warm they were unfortunately in the position of having to play catch up football . Whitefriars gave themselves a chance in the 2nd qtr but the 'Jackas' always had the answers . This scenario continued right throughout the remainder of the days game . In the end it was a disappointing end to Whitefriars season, however try telling that to the Ajax lads. The'Jackas' celebrated their 39 pt win as if there was no tomorrow and good luck to them . They had, along with the 'Friars' been the dominant team of the competition and proved worthy winners .

Seniors - Whitefriars V Southban k The game itself never reached 'dizzy heights . It was a dour struggle dominated by defences of both teams and packed with unforced errors . The fluctuating weather conditions didn't help matters, along with the nerves . hype and tension . The 'Friars' kicked to the southern end in the 1st, aided by a 2- 3 goal breeze and Southbank did well to contain them for the best part of the first 15 minutes . The 'Bankers' in fact had their chances to dent Whitefriars but just couldn't convert well enough . Once the Whitefriars machine got going . they quickly put the runs on the board and looked the goods . Again the 'Bankers' rallied and fought out the qtr in good spirit by snagging the last goal to end the period only 2 majors down . This lead was quickly whittled down, but the Whitefriars team steadied, and for a greater portion o1 the qtr appeared to be in control. For the second time in the match to date . Southbank again raised anothei supreme effort and with system in their game anc players prepared to take chances, they went on a scor ing spree and very much against the flow, took in a I pt lead at half time. The 3rd qtr really told the story of the differenc+ between a lead in each of 3 finals games against I . Fo the initial 12 minutes, Southbank pretty well heli Whitefriars, however once the 'Friars' broke the shack les that was it. Southbank were this time unable t raise the effort needed to stay in realistic touch . Hai it not been for inaccuracy, Whitefriars would hav taken in a much greater lead than the 25 pts they hel at orange time . In the final qtr . both teams threw everything the had left into the contest and the fitter legs c Whitefriars really came to the fore . A 32 pt victory we well deserved by a team and more importantly as club, who for the greater part of the year led the con petition and without doubt were the benchmark of it section . Southbank could be very proud of the efforts. MVP's for the 'Friars' were Pawlick . Carbone ar Houston. whilst for Southbank, Morgan, Goodlet ar McNamara were gallant triers .

UMPIRES CORNER by Leah Gallagher and Adam Kie l OPENING REMARK Well some people will be sad that the season has finally come to an end, and others reckon the end of the season couldn't come quick enough .

Well it's A Section and B Section grand final weekend and we wish the teams all the very best . We also wish the umpires well in their endeavours this weekend . Hope everyone enjoys the weekend of football. LAST UMPIRES CORNER 199 8

On behalf of my fellow scribe Leah and myself, firstly we would like to thank Angela Giles, Brett Connell, Phil Stevens, Sue Anderson and Peter Harris for their help and friendship during the season in regards to this column which helped us make it a success. We would also like to thank the many umpires who kept us up to date with many milestones, umpiring moments and tall stories during the year. We hope that everybody enjoyed the column and that we didn't embarrass too many people (surely not . Hope everyone has a great summer and even better new year and look forward to seeing everybody in season 1999 . CONGRATULATIONS Well we are down to the final four umpires for the year in the field, boundary and goals . The 12 of you who are selected should be congratulated on that well deserved honour . It is every umpires dream in the VAFA to do an (A or B) section grand final on the last weekend of the season . So we wish you all the very best in your games, and most of all enjoy every minute of it, and do your umpiring mates proud.

Well done guys . BYE BYE BUSHY One of the real stalwarts and all round nice guys in the umpiring ranks announced his retirement last weekend after doing his 15th and last grand final in the D reserves at Mordialloc . Mark (Bushy) Bushfield is one of the real nice guys in the Amateurs, in which I've never heard a bad word about, and who was very popular with his umpiring mates and with most of the clubs in the VAFA. His hard work for the Umpires' Association over the years has been second to none, and Bushy's shoes, I can assure you will be very hard to fill . We wish Bushy and wife Chris all the very best on their new venture moving down to Jan Juc, and hope to see you next year sometime over the season calling in on some games or to the umpires rooms for a beer or two . Well done and good luck Bushy . SOCIAL NEWS Dinner Dance is a happening thing on Friday 25th September, $40 per head . Get names and money to Chris Stevens . f Bounce Of Semi Finals

COACHES' CLI AFCA/VAF A

HOW TO WIN A VAFA PMAHMtiGHIP DR. COLIN P. DAVEY 2 or a team to win a premiership the coach needs to look at three areas (i) skill or talent, (ii) physical fitness and (iii) the correct psychological or mental approach . Unfortunately the skill and fitness aspects are not sufficient to ensure success, as when it comes to Grand Finals, the two teams are almost identically equal in these two areas . The third area, the psychological, becomes the dominating factor that decides whether a team fulfils its potential in terms of skill and fitness . Anyone doubting this has only to recall last years grand final scores at half time and full time, or even the 1998 women's Wimbeldon final . What happens to players during the finals series? Unfortunately, with all the pressures generated by the press, radio, television and even the general public at large, parents, girlfriends and work mates, the normal human emotion of anxiety takes over, and there is no question that this interferes with performance . Anxiety manifests itself in many ways in the body, and there is not a person alive who at some stage in their life has not felt sweaty palms, a drv throat, butterflies in the stomach, an urge to go to the toilet, or similar anxiety symptoms . However perhaps the worst feature is a tension in the muscles which interferes with one's co-ordination whether it be kicking, handball, marking or even running. Footballers, the majority of whom are by personality anxious extroverts, are more prone to anxiety than many other individual athletes, and a wise coach enlists the assistance of a sports psychologist to help mentally prepare his team for the final series, particularly the grand final . What then must the sports psychologist do? Having been trained in the sports sciences as well as psychology, he should first check that there are no problems in the player's skills or their physiological fitness. As most clubs have specialist skills coaches and physical education graduates to assist them, as well as sports medicine doctors, the teams that make the finals usually have these areas well covered . 28

THE

Just as the skills and fitness areas have taken 910 months to reach their peak so the sports psychologist must work with the players for many months in order to perfect their mental skills . By means of questionnaires and interviews he can assess their confidence, attention, concentration and most importantly their anxiety levels . Very few footballers have been found to be low anxious personalities although very experienced finals footballers learn how to cope and lessen their anxiety . The Barassis, Bartletts and Tucks of this world, have learnt how to cope with their anxiety having played in many finals series and grand finals . But compare this with a young 18 year old playing in his first finals series! The majority of players must learn how to reduce their anxiety particularly if they are playing in their first grand final. Since relaxation is at the opposite end of the continuum from anxiety, all athletes must learn a progressive relaxation procedure . Simply, this is tensing and then relaxing all groups of muscles beginning with the toes, lower leg, upper thigh and working up through the body, tail, tummy, shoulders, fingers, arms, and finally the head, mouth, forehead and eyes . The tensing should be for about six seconds, then relaxing, to be followed by a second tensing of the same set of muscles and then relaxing . Ideally the relaxation should take place in a quiet setting, sitting or lying comfortably with loose clothing, and maintaining a positive attitude . A good place to practice relaxation is last thing at night, in bed with the light out . Surprisingly, relaxation is a skill, which must be practiced and learnt, just like a banana kick for goal from the point post . When the skill of relaxation has been learnt sufficiently well, it is possible for the footballer to begin imaging himself on the football field . and playing the best game he is capable of . If he is a full forward he 'sees' himself leading for the ball . marking it, and then lining up the ball and kicking the goal . If he is a back man he may see himself spoiling a particular forward or marking over him, or a ruckman can experience the thrill of soaring over his rover . This form of mentally rehearsing his skills can give th e

young player's brain the experience of perfecting his ( skills . Or, he may even replay in his mind the very best game of football he has ever played . If having played at Elsternwick Park before, the footballer should go over in his mind, arriving at the ground getting changed, warming up, running out on the ground, and mentally rehearsing some of the skills he perfected . It is not commonly known the brain cannot tell the difference between a real or an imagined experience, so this is a method by which the young player can match the veteran finals player. It is not uncommon for athletes or footballers to practice this relaxation and imagery procedure an hour or more before commencing their match, but a further relaxation procedure is also necessary . One country's Olympic Games boxing coach used a relaxation procedure on his boxers to lessen their anxiety. but they were all knocked out in the first round . The reason was that the relaxation procedure (as well as lessening anxiety) decreased heart rate, blood pressure . breathing rate and lowered the body's metabolism . To perform at your optimal level physically, you need to increase heart rate, breathing rate and increase the blood flow to the workin g

muscles . Therefore after a relaxation procedure it is necessary to have 10-15 minutes of vigorous physical activity so that the player reaches his optimal level of arousal before commencing play. In summary, the procedure before play is relaxation in order to lessen anxiety, imagery of the skills you need to perform, followed by vigorous physical exertion in order to reach your optimal arousal level . This has often been termed "instant pre-play", the opposite of the more commonly used term . "instant replay" . Those mental skills, like physical skills, must be practiced regularly if they are to be perfected . At a recent Olympic Games an athlete who won 3 gold medals had been using the above mental preparation techniques for five years . So, who will win the premiership this year between Old Xaverians and Old Scotch, or Marcellin and Old Ivanhoe? At this stage of the season there is no perceptible difference in the skills and fitness of either team, so my pick for the premiership will be the team that has been best prepared mentally for that one great day in September. 17 YEARS AGO - 198 1 n an unequalled form reversal, Old Xaverians ,avenged their second semi 96 point defeat by North Old Boys when they controlled the A Section grand final throughout to win by 18 points, 15 .21 to 13 .15 . Nick Burne continued his great form at full forward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 and was a great performer around the ground . The best player on the ground was Old Xaverians captain John Noonan, who rucked strongly all day . A tightknit Old Xaverians defence shut out North's semifinal star, Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old Xaverians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody. Old Xaverians joined the select band of clubs which had won B&A section premierships in successive years . Old Xaverian's only other appearance in an A Section Grand Final was in 1964 when it was beaten by Old Paradians . 1 8 YEARS AGO - 1980 De La Salle OC and University Blues met in the A Section Grand Final with the Blues favourites to take out the flag. 'Twas not to be ! The Blues failed to make use of the breeze in the second term and at half time De La had appeared to have the game in hand although leading by only 10 points . The Blues attacked in the final term by inaccuracy and the bustling De La backs gave them no chance . Final scores were De La Salle 11 .14 to Universitv Blues 7 .19 . The team to represent De La was as follows :Backs : G . Connelly, P. McDonnell, B . Hanrahan Half Backs : R . Halassa, P . Donegan, B . Bourke Centres : D . Hollier, R . McHenry (C), J. Doolan H . Tavs in the top section, while the Scotchies, MHSOB and Yarra Valley take out the other premierships Review Section 1

Old Xave rians jumped De La Salle in the first quarter with Rathgeber and the showman Curnow prominent and from then on the D's played catch up football - to put it simply . A handy half time lead of 7 goals sounded a clear warning that the Xavs were on song, and although outscored in the second half 6 goals to 4 the damage had been done. Skidmore and Coughlan as expected were dominant in their midfield roles, while Storey down back and O'Connell in the ruck were proving handfuls for their De La Salle opponents. Better D's on the day were 0' Donnell, Bonnici and Pedicini through the midfield, with Bailey and Aron battled hard in defence . Overall the Xavs are to be congratulated for going through the season as the best team, they deservedly won the premiership . To the D's commiserations, a terrific second half of the year saw them make the big one, but were beaten by the better team on the day . Alex Johnson Medallist : P. Rathgeber (Old Xaverians ) Section 2 Old Scotch's sensational form continued last weekend much to the chagrin of Whitefriars who were unable to stop the onslaught that occurred in the first quarter . (14) scoring shots to (5) tells the story with a deficit of some (8) goals at quarter time and (12) at the half the game was all but over for the Frairs . Thomas again contributed heavily on the scoreboard with 6 majors . while Junkeer . Paterson and Sladen (3) continued an impressive season all round . Northey, Winch and Power were valiant in defeat although it was too little too late as far as the Friars were concerned . Old Scotch finishing full of running with Stevens prominent . while Dougherty. O'Meara and Murray also worthy of mention for the Friars who battled hard but were outclassed on the day. Old Scotch going one better than last year, while the Friars will seek solace in the fact that their seniors were victorious and move to C Section with hopes of further finals successes to com e John Miles Medallist : G. Section ( 2) Blue In the closest match of the weekend in the (4) U 19 sections a gallan t Hampton Rovers could not stay with a polished, well drilled running MHSOB, who ran out premiers for 1998 . The game began evenly with neither team giving much quarter, the H . Taylor Duddy ruck contest was proving crucial, while the Ash O'Brien Anderson battle was at evens at the first break. Jenkin was being well held and with Humphries struggling to break loose the Rovers were breaking down across half forward, where the run of Rodder and the fine work of Askew and McCully was proving decisive . Although ahead at the half the High were not assured of victory as the fighting Rovers came out firing in the third . Adams began to show glimpses while Captain Quon lifted, and with Rehn and Prantzos also battling hard good signs were there for the Rovers . However Moore, Hill and Joseph were keeping the High in command with slick foot skills and smart use of the football . Not even a final quarter (10) shots to (2) could assist the Rovers as they pot shotted the goals to no avail . When Moore slipped through a clever goal late to seal the match the Rovers lion-hearted push came to a close . A great game to watch, a credit to both coaches and clubs . John Simpson Medallist : Heath Taylor Section (2) Red A monster beginning by Yarra Valley had Old Ivanhoe on the back foot from the first bounce and when they bounced out to almost (6) goals in the lead by half time the Valley looked home and hosed . Middlin was proving dangerous up forward while at the other end Willis found it difficult to get into the game. Valoppi was firing and along with Vaughan and Fraser were providing the drive and direction with which the other Valley players followed . However in the third term OIG were not to be denied, and through the fine play of Dowd . Brandt and Davis hit back to get within striking distance of the Valley. However in a dour struggle in the last Cremean and Kruse were cool in crisis, and despite the best efforts of Gibson, Harper and Keane DIG could not dent the deficit much at all . Yarra Valley taking out their first ever U 19 VAFA premiership. Max Lyon Medallist: P. Valopp i

FLUID

--i ]a Ed,

Water is really the best for replacing fluid lost with footy . Sports drinks are also good sources of fluid, salt and energy. Remember on a hot day a running player can lose 4kgs of weight, that is the same as 4 litres of water. This would lead to severe dehydration. At McKinnon Sports Medicine our dieticians including Karen Inge who is Head of Sports Nutrition at the VIS always remind us that thirst is a very late indicator of the bodies need for fluid . That means drink first and foremost . Build up your fluid reserves for 48 hours before a game and try to drink about 500 m1s per quarter . That will leave you with that winning feeling .

ELST~ ~ j'1.".'1C PARK GATE S The main gate (Glenhuntly Rd) is open every match day. The rear gate (off St Kilda St) will only be open when Sunday matches are to be played . When parking in the area behind the grandstand please park in a manner that would allow cars around you to be able to leave . Players and officials who do not produce tickets at the gates will be counted and the club invoiced accordingly . Clubs are issued with an appropriate number of tickets for players and officials .
