WELCOME BACK The build up to any season is exciting with fresh players, coaches and administrators. Expectations are high and everyone is looking forward to the bounce of the ball. In my time this anticipation as never been higher. Season launches for clubs have gone from a pie night on the Thursday to glamorous events for sponsors and club supporters. None bigger than the VAFA’s own launch in the MCC Members Dining Room last Wednesday. Throughout the seven senior sections there is so much happening that it is impossible to highlight on one page. These are the questions I am looking forward to being answered during the year:
• How far can Kew go? Three premierships in a row graduating through the grades emulates the run of St Bede’s Mentone Tigers but do they have the talent for a fourth? I am led to believe that this would be a first in the VAFA. • The Premier competition is looking to be the strongest in history. • Can Old Trinity keep improving and win their first Premier Section title? • Can St Kevin’s win the Premier B and Premier flags in consecutive years? • Despite a loss of a number of players can St Bernard’s maintain their form? • Can Old Scotch and Beaumaris bounce back from relegation? • Is West Brunswick capable of three in a row? • Will Adam Pattinson returning to Old Paradians from Uni Blacks via Richmond, St Kilda and Hawthorn add the firepower for OP’s to win consecutive flags? • Can new clubs Canterbury and Parkside make an impact as they endeavour to move up the grades? • How will the umpires adapt to the stricter interpretation of the deliberate out of bounce rules and the 10 metre exclusion zone?
@vafaceo Whilst we have much to look forward to there has been a lot of activity over the summer that we should reflect on. The biggest announcement of the summer was the State Government’s commitment to funding $3m towards the $6m development of Sportscover Arena. Along with this funding we were also able to secure another $2m from other partners including Bayside City Council, the AFL, AFL Victoria and Old Melburnians. At the conclusion of the season the ground will be dug up with fences and lighting removed. Changes to the shape and direction of the oval will be made with various factors in mind including spectator comfort, playing conditions and the effect of the spring winds. The best site for a new building which will house the VAFA administration, change rooms for players and umpires and a social area for the VAFA Umpires Association and the Old Melburnians will also be decided. We anticipate that this will be completed during the 2017 season with a new ground open for the commencement of the 2018 season. Chartered Accountants & Advisory firm, William Buck signed on for another three years after great success with naming rights of William Buck Premier and the William Buck VAFA Grand Final lunch. William Buck have extended their sponsorship into Premier B & Premier C and will feature on all official match footballs in all three Premier sections. Education provider, Holmesglen Institute has built upon our highly successful club volunteer support and internship program last year into an official corporate partner. Holmesglen have secured naming rights for all Under 19 sections and will have a significant presence with our younger demographic. The VAFA also welcomes Epworth Healthcare, Richmond, BJS Insurance Group and natural health company, Martin & Pleasance, with their sports liniment product, ZEN. Good luck to all the players, coaches, umpires, administrators and members. Hope your club has many successes in 2016. Cover: dual Woodrow Medalist Adam Bentick in action on Grand Final Day

WILLIAM BUCK PREMIER
Nick Armistead
#2016ISHERE The William Buck Premier season is upon us and after a pre-season raft with speculation, innuendo and an arm’s length long rumour file, it is time for each Club to showcase the fruits of their time off. I have the privilege of covering the William Buck Premier section in 2016 and look forward to discussing and analysing each Club from within the VAFA’s top section. Casting our mind back to the last game of VAFA football and arguably the greatest William Buck Grand Final of the modern era, 2015 proved the year of the Snow Dog as they defeated Old Trinity by eight points. Anthony Rock’s talent-riddled list outlasted Old Trinity in a seesaw battle at Ikon Park as they claimed the Club’s third Premier section flag. Led by Jock Nelson Medallist, Mitch Hannan, Alexander Boyse and Chad Jones, the Snow Dogs reduced a six-point three quarter time deficit by kicking five goals to two in a stirring final term and subsequently earnt the title of William Buck Premier champions. As the reigning premiers, St Bernard’s deserve nothing less than initial favouritism heading into the 2016 season. The off-season has produced mixed results, with a number of key personnel from their premiership-winning team joining the VFL on the back of exceptional individual seasons. Importantly, the ins have been strong. Former Carlton, Melbourne and Gold Coast Suns assistant, Mark Riley, joins the Snakepit as senior coach after Rock returned to the AFL to assist Ross Lyon at Fremantle. Riley’s vast knowledge and expertise comes at an important time as the Snow Dogs attempt to go back-to-back for the first time since Collegians in 2011-12. Can they do it? 100%. Will they do it? It will take an improved effort from one of nine other Clubs to ensure they don’t. The T’s hit new heights as an organisation in 2015, partaking in the William Buck Premier Grand Final for the first time in the Club’s history. Attractive, fast-paced ball was the flavour of the year, with 2
@NickArmistead the T’s using the wide expanses of Daley Oval to their advantage as they consistently outran opposition teams on their way to 14 home and away victories. Four-time section best and fairest recipient, Brendan Iezzi, is locked in to return from injury during the season, with his exclusion for the majority of last year testament to the Club’s continued improvement and ability to galvanise without their star midfielder. With another year of experience in the highest section under their belt, continued development of their young list and the return of Iezzi, 2016 is shaping up as the breakthrough year Old Trinity fans have been longing for. The off-season was prosperous for the University Blues as they added ex-AFL duo, Kieran Harper and Clayton Hinkley, to their formidable midfield consisting of Jeremy Mugavin and Marshall Rippon. Setting out to improve upon last year’s preliminary final appearance against eventual premier, St Bernard’s, the Blues also welcome ex-Swan Districts star, Tim Geappen, as well as returnees Thomas Mackenzie (knee), Jack Townley (neck) and Tim Blakey (exchange). Despite Harper being troubled by injury early in the season, the outfit representing the Blues in Round One will be similar to the side running around post-regular season. Who didn’t jump on the De La train in the second half of last season? As an unbiased supporter, their last nine matches – of which they won eight and drew one – were scintillating, ruthless and some of the best amateur football you are likely to see. During that period of dominance, they averaged 101 points per game from more than 28 scoring shots. Despite building a strong relationship with the scoreboard, the run was bound to end at one stage. Unfortunately for De La, it happened to be in the semi-final against the Blues. However, using the momentum of last season’s resurgence and with the return of former Woodrow Medallist, Jacob Williams, among a host of other impressive recruits, expect the De La train to continue to roll in 2016. Last year’s reigning premiers were unable to repeat the extraordinary feats of claiming a William Buck Premier flag as they narrowly missed finals with eight wins during the home

and away fixture. Cam Roberts returns from a one-year break as senior coach and will look to build around young guns the ilk of Jordan Quaile as the Blacks get used to life post Huw Lacey and Adam Pattison. Led by VAFA stalwart, Bede Mahon, and goal-kicking sensation, Alastair Robbins, expect the Blacks to return to a brand of football capable of inflicting damage to any side in the competition. The Xavs’ Round 18 clash against Old Scotch and unlikely – but mathematically possible – risk of relegation to Premier B looks all but a memory as they claim ownership as one of the favourites heading into 2016. And why wouldn’t they be? Brendan Goss returns to run riot in the forward 50 with last year’s leading goal-kicker, Matt Handley, while the additions of Jay Bruno and Dan Noonan will add the depth required to take the powerhouse from Toorak Park back to September. If ever there was a Club flying under the radar heading into the first game of a VAFA season, it is Old Carey. Seventh at the conclusion of last year, the Panthers welcomed two new senior coaches to the fore, with former AFL assistant, Paul O’Connell, and 2015 U19 premiership coach, Michael Tarrant, to share the responsibilities moving forward. Often underestimated and forever a threat, expect to see the preliminary results of #GenerationNext in the coming weeks. Another Club who were battling to avoid relegation in the final round of 2015, Collegians will be working to recapture the same form which took them to the William Buck Grand Final 12 months earlier. On paper, the Lions have been less active with personnel over the past few months, instead opting to develop talented youth around the experienced heads of Nick Corp and Courtney Hylton. There are two new Clubs vying for the ultimate success in the VAFA’s highest section, with Premier B grand finalists, St Kevin’s and Old Melburnians, re-entering due to their successful 2015 campaigns. Neither side have shown any signs of slowing down in the wake of their thrilling Premier B decider and look likely to shake up the competition in what is shaping as the closest and most difficult to predict in a number of years. PREMIER B
David Chalmers
OPENING SALVOS Welcome to another season of Premier B footy for 2016. Last season saw history created as St Kevins completed an incredible 20-0 season and finally made the step up after ten years in Premier B. They were joined by Old Melburnians who had the SKOBs on the ropes in the Big One but couldn’t keep them down, eventually going down by 11 points. At the other end of the ladder, Caulfield struggled all year for two wins and Mazenod had to win in the last round to stay in Premier B but were unable to. Both teams will look to regroup in Premier C. We are joined by Old Scotch and Beaumaris from William Buck Premier, and Old Haileybury and Monash Blues are up from Premier C. Ajax have become the Premier B mainstays, suiting up for a fifth straight season. The Jackas finished 2015 with a third consecutive fifth placing, missing out on finals action by percentage. They spent most of the season, along with Fitzroy and the Rovers, stuck below finals but above relegation and will be keen to take the next step. Marty Pask has been reappointed for another season. “Our goals for 2016 are for our playing group to take another step forward to compete with and against the more established clubs. I feel our players have a greater understanding of what is required to consistently challenge the competition and I feel we are well prepared and have the understanding of what it takes.” The Beaumaris Sharks return to Premier B after three seasons in William Buck Premier. Decorated Sharks legend Brayden Haynes has been reappointed as coach. President John Murton said: “It was not an auspicious start for me as President in 2015 with our senior team being relegated to Premier B after 3 years in the Premier Division of VAFA. However, we have quickly put aside the disappointment and are keenly looking forward to what has become a Bayside challenge with 7 of the 10 teams in Premier B being local sides. This should ensure willing contests and big crowds.” 4
Fitzroy coach Michael Pickering is back on board and will be joined by 2015 Senior Assistant Nick Mitchell in a co-coaching role. The Roys, home to 2015 GT Moore Medallist Rory Angiolella, won eight games in 2015 and were one of a number of clubs stuck in the middle of the pack for most of the season. Mitchell said: “We have an exciting style of play and the effort and intensity this year (2015) was fantastic. As a young group I really believe there will be some natural improvement, particularly with further strength and fitness training in the pre-season.” Based on 2015, the in-house expectation is that they win 9 or 10 and make finals. “If we had taken our chances last year we would have played finals, so we are not far off where we need to get to. Now is the time to make our mark.” The Hampton Rovers have the opportunity to establish some consistency in 2016, as they will be playing in the same grade two years in a row for the first time in at least five seasons. The Rovers won six games and spent most of the season stuck in the middle regions of the ladder. For various reasons, they ended up using 56 players in their senior team, which was always going to hamper their efforts for on-field success. Owen Lalor is the new boss at Boss James Reserve, taking over from Guy Martyn who led the Rovers for the previous three seasons, taking them from Division 1 in 2013 up to Premier B. The Monash Blues have been Premier C regulars for the past few seasons but there has been a clear upward progression and they’ve finally taken the step up to Premier B thanks to a top two finish. The promotion was soured somewhat by the fact they were toppled in the Grand Final by fourth-placed Old Haileybury. Paul Groves is at the helm again and President Julian Smith said: “We are really excited about TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Beaumaris v Monash Blues Hampton Rovers v Parkdale Vultures Old Haileybury v Old Brighton Old Scotch v AJAX St Bedes/Mentone Tigers v Fitzroy

returning to Premier B for the first time since 1992. We are hopeful of being competitive each week, and holding our own as we find our feet in what is sure to be an intensely competitive grade. Our players and committee have been working hard to ensure we are as well prepared as we can be and, whatever happens, our Club is determined to enjoy the year in the upper reaches of the VAFA.” Old Brighton were a permanent fixture in the top four last season, despite going through what president Shane Young described as “the worst run of injuries to our senior players in our Club’s history.” 2016 promises to be a season of ‘consolidation.’ From a playing point of view the off season was quite a turbulent one, losing quality players including Jon Perrett, Marcel Bruin, Ben Gadsden, Nick Marston, Michael Dewar and Tom Skewes. Such a turnover will inevitably have on-field consequences. Dylan Verney has been appointed captain and is supported by a core of experienced players including Ben Jakobi, Ben Austen, Dan Anthony and Tom Mariani. Old Haileybury return to Premier B riding high on the most unlikely of Premiership victories. Finishing the Premier C season in fourth place, they made a clean sweep of the finals, culminating in an eight-goal defeat of the highly fancied Monash Blues. Coach Daniel Hughes has been re-appointed. After 35 years in the top flight, Old Scotch find themselves in unfamiliar territory, relegated to Premier B after a disappointing 2015. The Cardinals, led once again by Mark Passador will look to establish themselves early in their new environment to give themselves a good opportunity to get back to William Buck Premier. President Peter Warner said: “With the number of players returning, OSFC are looking forward with anticipation to the season with success and enjoyment in mind. We have formed a second Under 19 team thanks to the growing number of young players joining the club which is a positive sign for our long term future.” Parkdale Vultures will be keen to take advantage of their fortunate finish to 2015 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
– they avoided relegation by a mere three percent thanks to some Round 18 results going their way. Sam Radford takes charge for a sixth consecutive season. The St Bedes/Mentone Tigers may well feel a bit miffed finding themselves back in Premier B for another season. Relegated at the end of 2014 after several years in the top flight, they cruised through the season clearly the second best team behind St Kevins, but failed to rise to the occasion when it counted – finals time. Steve Ryan has taken the coaching reins, replacing Mick Dwyer and they’ll saddle up again and see if they can go one better.

AGONISING WAIT IS OVER! It’s fantastic to finally have football underway in the VAFA community. After two agonising weeks of watching AFL, the excitement it has produced has had us all itching for Round 1 and finally it’s here. Let’s take a closer look at the teams in Premier C and what we should expect. Peninsula Old Boys has had an impressive offseason playing against some stellar opposition in the practice matches. They look set to fire this year after retaining most of their list and recruiting well. 2015 Grill’d Rising Star, James Fletcher, looks set to play a dominant role after his pre-season at VFL level and will be amongst many young guns looking to offer run and carry in 2016. The Pirates will be led strongly by their skipper, Stu Grigg, who will be accompanied by some experienced recruits. Their first clash with Ormond will give us all an insight as to how far they will go this year, but expect big things from the Pirates. Ormond are chasing the lost premiership which they had one hand on during the 2015 home and away season. After losing one match and sitting three games clear on top of the ladder after the home and away season, Ormond went on to lose by 30 points to Kew in the Division 1 Grand Final. Despite Ormond taking the step many believe to be the biggest in amateur football (Division 1 to Premier C), they should not be written off as they are every chance to redeem themselves this year in finals. With the likely inclusion of ex-AFL player, Matthew Robbins, to their already talented list, Ormond’s search for redemption could produce outstanding results. Williamstown CYMS fell in the middle of the pack in 2015 and will look to improve this year. Despite finishing seventh, they were the fifth highest scoring team in Premier C and will look to keep their attacking style of play in 2016. A lot of young talent has emerged from the 6
Williamstown Juniors; each of whom will be fighting for a spot in the senior side. Outside of their juniors, they have been relatively quiet in the recruiting department but retained many of last year’s list. The CY’s aligned four of their guns – including goal kicking star Nick Ebinger - to Williamstown Seagulls (VFL) who, if available, will play a major role in team success. Old Camberwell Grammarians will have a thrilling opening encounter against Williamstown CYMS after they finished two games apart in 2015. They proved they are capable of competing against some of the sections’ stronger sides in patches throughout last year, including last year’s Premiers Old Haileybury. In Round 18, it was inconsistent goal kicking which let the Wellers down as they finished the day with six goals and 11 behinds against the Bloods. It’s been a grueling preseason for the boys and I expect them to finish higher than eighth this year. Caulfield Grammarians has been relegated after managing just two wins in Premier B, yet had a strong off-season as they recruited more than 30 players to their Club. Caulfield are happy to see the back of St Kevin’s after an average losing margin of 107 and will be chasing wins in 2016 after numerous tough encounters last season. They have the right men in charge to get the club back on the winners’ list, with cocaptains, Tim Nixon and Tom Small, set to lead the pack alongside coach, Simon Williams, who has 218 games of amateur experience as a player under his belt as well as coaching last year’s Big V representative side. Mazenod OC were 2.65% short of avoiding relegation in 2015. Managing five wins last season, Mazenod will be a strong presence in Premier C whilst also recruiting Kalem Post after he played 14 games for Frankston in the VFL. The Nodders will be led by Ben Phibbs who has an

exceptionally impressive football resume and will look to improve his talented list. It was a disappointing conclusion to the year for Marcellin after finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home & away season. Marcellin has shown in the last four years they are more than capable of winning a premiership, finishing in the top three each season. Amateur enthusiasts would love to see them finally receive the reward they are so desperately close to and I think everyone in the VAFA expects them to finish at the top end of the ladder once again. Old Ivanhoe Grammarians lost in the 2015 finals series to eventual premier, Old Haileyburians, to the tune 95 points after finishing two games above them at the end of the home & away season. Their off-season has been impressive, playing well in practice matches and recruits some big names. Joining the club is gun forward and ex-St Kilda player, Matthew Ferguson, who was the leading goal kicker for Strathfieldsaye Storm last year and is rumored to be the fittest he’s ever been. Chris Naish will again lead the troops to what I believe will be a Premier C Grand Final in 2016. Kew are in the hunt to make VAFA history as they attempt to go back-to-back-to-back-to-back! Senior coach, Ian Aitken, has revolutionized the club and created a dominant outfit who has climbed the grades from Division 3 to Premier C in consecutive years. A winning culture has been enforced upon the playing group as their journey has been well publicized outside the VAFA community. It’ll be a ‘feel good’ story if achieved but they may face their biggest task to date, similar to Ormond, elevating from what could be considered as the biggest step in amateur football. Will the Kew run come to an end in 2016? Oakleigh finished three games out of finals in 2015 and are hoping to take the next step this year. Despite their ladder placing, the Krushers were the second highest scoring team in 2015. It’s their attacking ‘score fest’ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
style of football that makes them exciting to watch, demonstrating that they are more than capable of finishing higher in 2016. Dual B&F winners, Shane Borland and Stuart Wines, look to lead the pack again and you can expect it to rain goals as Aaron Cloke remains in the arc. Good luck to all playing in Round 1 this weekend for what should be an exciting start to a much-anticipated Premier C Season.

OFFICIAL WELCOME
The VAFA would like to officially welcome two new employees who began their work late in 2015, Mikala Sykes and Nick Armistead. Mikala has joined the Football Operations team as Football Operations Assistant and will be working closely alongside Sam Confait (Football Operations Manager). Mikala has controlled the registration process for the VAFA over the last month and has answered ever clubs question or query making the 2016 process as simple as possible for all VAFA clubs. Nick Armistead joined the VAFA not long after Andrew Leonard made his departure during the 2015 Season. Nick studied a Bachelor of Journalism (Sport) has now fulfilled the role as Media and Communications Coordinator. Nick is introducing a number of new features to VAFA Media including HQ News and Periscope during the weekly live tweets.

IRELAND TOUR During the month of October, the Big V Representative side travelled overseas for the biannual tour of Ireland. The Big V travelled around the Emerald Isle and played four International Rules matches against Irish opponents; Cork U21s, Tuam Stars, Combined Universities and Donaghmore/Ashbourne with a 2/2 win/loss ratio. The tour was concluded In London where the Big V had their final
VICTORIAN AFL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR The AFL last year announced Chris Swinburne as the Victorian winner of the AFL Volunteer of the Year Award for the tireless work she devotes as secretary for St John’s Old Collegians. As the sole recipient from our volunteer-packed part of the country, Swinburne was awarded two AFL grand final tickets, three nights’ accommodation at the Mecure Hotel in Treasury Gardens and the opportunity to walk the grand final parade on the Friday prior to the blockbuster clash at the MCG. Walking the renowned parade with her fellow state award winners and in front of 150,000 vocal fans was unlike anything Swinburne had ever encountered. “I have never had such an awesome experience, the crowd was fantastic,” she said. “So many people on the sidelines were clapping the volunteers and

saying well done you’re fantastic you volunteers. So it was great to hear from them.” A selfless, devoted and unassuming stalwart of the club, Swinburne’s victory is deserved recognition for the multitude of roles, jobs and activities she has undertaken in the seven years she has spent with St John’s.
AMMO ODD SPOT Elsternwick is the oldest district club in the VAFA. They also lay claim to one of the wackiest feats in VAFA history. In 1996 Adam Hankin kicked 10 goals in one game and simultaneously devoured a hot dog with each goal he booted. There were no records kept as to whether he had fries with each dog. FORMER XAV DEFEATS SUPERBUG!
Former Old Xaverians footballer and VFL-listed player, Sam O’Sullivan, has recently beaten the odds by surviving a rare and often fatal infection, Necrotizing Myositis. The 24-yearold is recovering post-surgery and is believed to be one of seven survivors of the superbug which has just 21 recorded cases across the
world. The star footballer began walking far earlier than expected and is proving his doctors wrong as he flies through his rehabilitation. The VAFA community wish Sam all the best with his recovery and is rumoured to have hit the football track already, participating in a training session with Old Xaverians this pre-season.
RECOGNITION VAFA field umpire, Shannon Kirkby, was presented the Joanne Cox Award (for commitment & dedication to umpiring and supporting others, as voted by her peers) at the AFL Victoria Female Umpire Academy Dinner. This topped off a great year for Shannon who was one of the field umpires for the Women’s Exhibition match at the MCG between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs, before she completed her year by officiating the VAFA Div 3 Reserves grand final at Trevor Barker Oval.

Congratulations to Ormon’d Matthew Martinov - “Booka” joined the Ormond juniors from De La in the U/16s and the team won the premiership that season. He followed up with a senior premiership in 2008 where he also made the VAFA C-D4 Rep side. He also captained the seniors for 4 seasons and noted how the time has flown since he has been at Ormond. Congratulations from everyone at Ormond on reaching this significant milestone.

Congratulations to Canterbury’s LACHLAN GILES – Lachy started playing with Canterbury in 2002. One of the few players who came through the Canterbury Junior FC ranks, he is known for his outstanding contribution on the wing, although he has on occasion snuck into the forward line to kick a goal. Lachy was an integral part of the 2003 Premiership team and is now a dual Premiership winner, playing his 200th game in last year’s Grand Final against Westbourne. Lachy has been a runner up Best and Fairest player twice in the Reserves.

Congratulations to Monash Blues’ TOM WATERS – Tom started his career back in 2008 as a crucial part of the highly successful U19s side. Starting his career as a wingman, he has transformed himself into a reliable defender. After taking a few years’ hiatus to travel the world, it was great to see him back into a pair of Monash shorts for the 100th time! Good on you Tommy!

WEDDINGS, PARTIES, ANYTHING… FOOTY IS BACK! Well here we are, a six-month off-season has been and gone, a pre-season full of gut-busting sprints, weight sessions, tactical planning, reflection and potentially a bit of gallivanting throughout the festive season is now behind us. Season 2016 brings with it much excitement and anticipation. As always in the VAFA the element of the unknown is present with the two up, two down promotion/ relegation system. The inclusion of four exciting teams to Division 1 this season means anything is possible. Coming down from Premier C we have PEGS and Therry Penola, whilst Ivanhoe will join Division 2 premiers Old Paradians this season. As is the case for this time of year there are many questions to be answered. Who will be the surprise packet of 2016? Can the clubs perched in Division 1 take the next step? Who will get off to a flying start? Thankfully, those questions and more are about to be answered as pre-season is finally done and dusted and the real stuff begins. Let’s get into it! Old Geelong was 14 points shy of a grand final berth in 2015 and will no doubt be looking for redemption this year. In a move to increase their professionalism the boys from Como Park have enlisted VAFA legend Nick Bourke as director of football. Bourke will be looking to mentor the coaching panel and enhance player development. It’s certainly looking as though no stone will be left unturned at Old Geelong this season. St Mary’s Salesian rounded out the top four last season, but failed to make inroads during the finals series. The Saints look to be the side that were busiest on the recruiting front throughout the off-season. They added some top end talent in former VFL and EFL premiership player, Mitch Woods, Northern Territory based key forward, Darren Wauchope along with the talented Carson Strobel who is well known throughout the VAFA ranks. The Saints look set to be right up there come the business end. Whitefriars finished on eight wins last season to see them placed fifth on the ladder. For the Friars to take the next step this season they will need a strong contribution from the young talent on 16
their list. If the next generation of under 19 players can step up coach Dick Baker will have a side that will compete week in week out. On a sad note, all the best to young gun Toby McGurgan who has unfortunately suffered a second torn ACL in as many years, we wish you a swift and painless recovery. Prahran Assumption will look to build on an encouraging, yet slightly underwhelming 2015 where they had a positive percentage despite a poor win/loss record, highlighting their competitiveness. Under recently appointed captain James Musster the Two Blues will provide a tough contest for any opponent this year. After finishing in a disappointing seventh position last season, Old Mentonians are building momentum for a stronger assault for their 2016 campaign. The Panthers are coming off a strong summer where they have been able to add some handy acquisitions in former Mentone Grammar stars Will Lancaster, Angus Hill and Taylor Ward along with ex-TAC Cup players Cam Sharp and Aaron Hodges. The return of Darcy Brown from the Sandy Zebras will also help the Panthers cause. Avoiding relegation last year by two wins was the boys from Brunswick, NOBSPC. With a history of success in Division 1 NOBSPC will have their sights set on a much-improved performance in 2016. The acquisition of former Hampton Rover, Kyle Docherty who takes on the role of playing assistant, will only aid them in their quest for finals footy. After taking home the wooden spoon in Premier C, PEGS have a point to prove. With a strong nucleus of senior players including Baddeley and Skurrie, PEGS will be hoping the younger brigade can be the key to launching them back into the premier TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD St Mary’s v Whitefriars Therry Penola v Old Geelong Old Mentonians v Brunswick NOBSPC PEGS v Ivanhoe Prahran Assumption v Old Paradians

divisions. Livori and McCann will bolster their stocks, as they make their return to the Runway. Therry Penola impressed at times during their short stay in Premier C, however an inconsistent season led to their drop back to Division 1. The Lions will be keen to make amends this year and should be thereabouts come finals time. Star players Jarrod Egglestone and Jarrod Bannister are once again be the keys. Young guns Darcy Ryan and Brock Egglestone, who both missed large portions of 2015, will complement them nicely. One of the biggest stories of the off-season in the entire VAFA this year was the Old Paradian’s recruitment of former AFL and Uni Blacks star, Adam Pattison. Pattison, a former student at Parade College has gone back to where in all began in a bid to assist his club move up the grades. The imposing figure will be seen playing through the forward line and in the ruck and will no doubt be a key pillar for the Raiders as they look to back up their Division 2 premiership. Of course the Raiders can’t fall into the trap of relying too much on the big man, so they will need contributors right across the board.

Division 2 bridesmaid, Ivanhoe will be out to build on a strong pre-season, which included an emphatic victory over NOBSPC in a practice match. However, as we all know too well, premierships are not won in March. The hoers are going to need to take this early season form into the season proper if they are to match it with the best upon their return to Division 1. Round 1 is jam packed with exciting contests that will have tipsters left scratching their heads (myself included). Therry Penola up against Old Geelong out at Pascoe Vale is the blockbuster of the round. The Lions, who are primed for a big season after the pain of relegation in 2015 will come out firing, whilst Old Geelong are one of the hot tips for a tilt at the flag. I’m tipping the Lions in a fierce contest that should go down to the wire. Find my tips for the rest of the round to the left.

WELCOME BACK! Division 2 had it all in 2015, with an emotional premiership victory by Old Paradians after 29 years void of silverware and joint Fullerton medallists, Timothy Harper (MHSOB) and Dean Calcedo (Preston Bullants). If the pre-season whispers coming out of the nine competing Clubs are anything to go by, this season is primed to live up to similarly enthralling standards. As is the case with the VAFA’s promotion/ relegation system, four new teams enter Division 2 in 2016. Bulleen/Templestowe and Yarra Valley will aim to increase their combined six wins from Division 1 last season, while West Brunswick and Emmaus St Leo’s make the jump on the back of their one-point grand final thriller in Division 3. Due to Monash Gryphons’ inability to field a senior side in 2016, there will be a bye round for all Clubs after Old Paradians and Ivanhoe earnt promotion to Division 1 and Elsternwick and South Melbourne Districts fell to the division below following unsuccessful 2015 campaigns. St John’s will look back on last season as the one which got away. After commencing the year with an 8-0 start, the JOCs fell away to a straight sets loss in the first two weeks of the finals. Injuries and suspension cost the JOCs dearly on the run home but a positive preseason, combined with a number of impressive inclusions, gives the boys from Thomas Carroll deserved hope of playing finals footy again. Young, vibrant and with a year of Division 2 under their belt, the newly-franchised Preston Bullants will be keen to avenge their first semifinal loss to eventual premier, Old Paradians, which ultimately put an end to any chance of 18
going back-to-back-to-back in 2015. Despite being unable to secure the three-peat after flags in the two years prior, star midfielder, Dean Calcedo, claimed the Fullerton Medal as one of the two best players running around in Division 2. With the Holmes brothers running around racking up disposals, among several other young guns full of potential, expect the Bullants to make serious inroads and likely find themselves in Division 1 next season. Old Eltham Collegians fell agonisingly close to finals in 2015 by one game but had Tim woods, Ben Gill and Zach Tranter combine for 113 goals as they dominated the forward line and could take them one step further in 2016. Predict the Turtles to be extremely hard to beat at home and have retained majority of their list from last year. Melbourne High School Old Boys have completed a solid pre-season setting up the foundations for a much anticipated 2016. Finishing last year with 9 wins and 9 losses, MHSOB are on the hunt for success as they only just missed playing finals by 3 games. In Round 18, 200 game veteran, Tim Harper took arguably mark of the year and three votes to earn a much deserved Fullerton Medal. MHSOB showed they can compete with the best after being only one of three sides to beat Ivanhoe during the year. MHSOB will look to their young talent to work alongside Harper and Villani in 2016 in an attempt to climb back to Division 1, where they once were in 2014. Despite finishing seventh, Richmond Central were the fifth highest scoring team in 2015 and will look to continue their attacking style of play. The Snakes will be led by new Senior Coach Brett Davidson in 2016, who will look to continue the fine form they showed at the beginning of the 2015 season. The Snakes showed their best was well and truly good enough to compete with the ladder leaders, despite losing leading goal kicker Jake Munro who kicked 88 goals last year, expect the talented Snakes forward line to cover his goal kicking prowess. The West Brunswick train continues to roll at full steam after the 2014 Division 4 premiers backed it up last year in Division 3 with a one-point victory against Emmaus St Leo’s in one of the greatest grand finals in VAFA history. Despite the Animals exhibiting pure dominance and going undefeated for the entire home and away season, West Brunswick found form at the right time and hit the front with just minutes remaining on the clock. While history dictates it is incredibly difficult to win three premierships in a row, the confidence attained from last year’s grand final win may propel the Westies to that very feat. Reigning VAFA Senior Coach of the Year, Angus Hamilton, has the credentials and confidence of his chargers and as such, anything is possible. Extreme highs and lows are part and parcel of Australian Rules football and unfortunately Emmaus St Leo’s felt both throughout 2015. An undefeated season was on the cards heading into the Division 3 Grand Final, before a wrong bounce of the sherrin with moments remaining on the clock put an end to an unbelievably impressive streak. Club legends, Paul and Nathan Baranello, brought individual success to the Animals’ outfit, claiming the Hutchinson Medal for Division 3 best and fairest and the best on ground medallion in their grand final loss, respectively. Having retained the bulk of their list - including goal kicking duo, Ryan Harding and Christopher Beluszar, and the Baranello brothers - the Animals are shaping up as a favourite with VAFA fans to defy the odds THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
and go one better in Division 2. Bulleen/Templestowe and Yarra Valley will make the trek back down to Division 2 this season, after the two Clubs combined for just six wins in 2015. While the output was not where either side would have liked, there were positives to take out of their respective seasons. Bullants forward Kristian Cherbakof booted 45 from his 12 matches at an average of 3.75 per outing in a standout performance, while Bushrangers pair, Stephen Donald and Michael Letson, combined for 49 to lead all comers. The great thing about the relegation system is it gives Clubs a chance to recompose and challenge for the premiership the season after undergoing disappointment. Both the Bushrangers and the Bullants will undoubtedly be there come September.

CANCEL YOUR PLANS... THE VAFA IS BACK Summer is over, the weather is getting colder, the nights are getting shorter and Saturdays are getting fun again because footy is back! And it is building to be an exciting year in the heart of the VAFA, the third division, as two of the storied clubs return, while a pair of exciting teams rise through the ranks to add the current list of clubs that make for arguably the most competitive Division 3 in recent times. Following one of the greatest grand finals in VAFA history, with West Brunswick defeating Emmaus St. Leo’s by a single point, 12 clubs now have a big act to follow as they challenge to win the flag. Elsternwick return to the third division for 2016 after enjoying the second division, albeit for a brief period, the Wickers look to bounce back to their high expectations after a frustrating 2015 that only resulted in three wins. While the Wickers are joined in Division 3 by one of the most decorated clubs in the VAFA, South Melbourne Districts, who themselves suffered through a difficult year ravaged by injury in 2015 which saw the club struggle to find consistency resulting in them tumbling down the ladder as they look to return to prominence in 2016. Glen Eira has already been a through a busy off-season away the field as they join forces and resources with Monash Gryphons in a bid to strengthen both outfits. While the Saints refocus on this year, they will look to use 2016 as the platform to return to their lofty home at the top of the ladder. Hoping to get off to a better start this season than last, Glen Eira will look to build on the form they found during the year to secure their passage back into Division 2. They come into the first game of the year against another team that ended 2015 on a high, as Albert Park kicked their highest score of the season in the final game against Eley Park. However, it was one of only a few highlights for 20
the Falcons who missed out on finals football in 2015. Two teams who had plenty of highlights last season are our two newcomers to Division 3, Parkside and Canterbury. Newly-promoted Parkside Football Club began 2015 with a stumble but rebounded to end the final rounds in some stellar form. Led by OJ Meehan medallist, Shane McLaren, the Red Devils narrowly went down in the Division 4 grand final and will look to go one better this year. The team who knocked off the Red Devils were Division 4 premiers, Canterbury Football Club. The Cobras had a strikingly successful year afetr narrowly missing promotion in 2014, making sure of it in 2015 by winning the division. It was a prize well-earned after a tough decade which saw them spend more time at the bottom rather than the top of ladders. The two new clubs bring an exciting brand of football to Division 3 and are going to be more than a handful for some as they begin their quest to win the premiership this year. After an inconsistent year that saw ‘Swinny’ finish up at 8-8, it was good enough for finals but unfortunately handled comfortably by eventual premiers, West Brunswick. Overall, Swinburne had a pleasing year which included a run of winning four of the last five games when TODAY SELECTIONS IN BOLD Elsternwick v South Melbourne Districts Glen Eira v Albert Park Parkside Football Club v Canterbury Hawthorn v La Trobe University Power House v Aquinas OC Swinburne University v UHS-UV

the season was the on the line, providing some positives to build on. Another team looking to build upon their finals visit are UHS-VU after grasping the last finals spot in 2015. Uni High lost out to grand finalist, Emmaus St Leo’s, in the semi-final but the Vultures are poised to make some noise and rise up the table this season. Power House AFC can’t wait for the ball to bounce next weekend and put last year in the books for good. With so much promise heading into last season, the year didn’t go to plan; however, taking it right up to Hawthorn AFC was a highlight in a season with more lowlights. They were joined in lower rungs of the ladder by La Trobe University. Turning the calendar couldn’t come quick enough for La Trobe after a lean 2015 which only saw them record two wins. They finished last year off strong with an impressive showing in the final round of the season against Hawthorn, showing they are capable of playing Division 3 footy. Aquinas finished the regular season in third place, a tremendous achievement that was unfortunately spoiled with their less than tremendous performance in their final series. The Bloods were bungled out in straight sets, losing to Hawthorn before being dismantled by Emmaus. However, the Bloods were one of the teams of the year and an early season prediction to make it to the big game this year. But they need an opponent.

Hawthorn, like their name’s sake, are in the midst of an unbelievable run. After being promoted in 2015, the Hawks almost completed the Cinderella story and nearly made it to the grand final of Division 3 before falling to eventual premiers, West Brunswick. They had a brilliant second half to the season which saw them win THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

DIVISION 4

RUBBING THE CRYSTAL BALL With cricket season, Summer and daylight saving finished, this can only mean . . .that footy’s back! We would all be content each team has completed their pre-seasons, put the hard yards in, primed for an exciting year. After many rumours swirling about South Mornington/ St. Francis Xavier, the competition has settled into a 9 team competition. I believe overall, this will suit everyone with a “play everyone twice” fixture with 2 byes. Gone are premiers Canterbury and Parkside and we welcome back Eley Park after 2 years in Division 3. Before round 1 gets underway, we rub the crystal ball to see what it says:
PREDICTED FINISH: 1ST - WESTBOURNE After a big 2015 season going 14-2, then going out in straight sets in their finals campaign, the Warriors would have learnt from this and would most certainly have their eye on the prize. Getting strong numbers on the pre-season track, a number of strong recruits, Coach Roger Hand could have all the pieces of the puzzle. We’ll see. 2ND - ELEY PARK The Sharks won’t be happy to be back in Div 4 but, they too will be eyeing the prize that eluded them in 2013. Pre season reports from Whitehorse Reserve are they haven’t missed a beat. Practice matches against UHS-VU and Albert Park showed they’re still capable of playing Div 3. After an injury depleted year, their returning players will be like new recruits. The Sharks lost a couple of really important players such as Declan Mitchell, Chris Marsiglio and Tim Miller. But, their recruits from the upper VAFA Divisions and Chris Munro, from AFL Sydney, will impress. 3RD - POINT COOK Another side on the up and up will be the Doggies again. Although they don’t appear to have recruited many, they have a junior club 22
@gavsouthern to feed from which is a luxury in Div 4. The loss of Hayden Barker to Westbourne will hurt. Encouraging practise matches against Glen Eira and Spotswood, the Doggies are primed and intent on climbing the ladder.
4TH - BOX HILL NORTH Keen to build on the their first finals appearance in ten years, they have retained their players and have gone on a massive recruiting spree getting over 20+ players from other clubs. We don’t know how they’ve done it but, I’m sure the lower clubs would love to know their recruiting secrets. Led again by the evergreen Daniel Penny, “Bocky” will need even more share of their goal-kickers, to go the next step. Every game needs to count. 5TH - NORTH BRUNSWICK After going 5-1 before making the finals by the skin of their teeth (8-8), their upset victory over Canterbury in the Semi-Final capped off an improved but, inconsistent year. The Bulls have also gone on a recruiting drive as they enjoyed September action. Challenging practise matches against Parkside and Westbourne show they want to continue to improve. 6TH - MT. LILYDALE With no website and next to nil social media, the Rams could be the danger team of 2016. Last year, they boasted victories over Point Cook and North Brunswick so, are capable of anything. A pludra of EFL recruits, 2016 could be there year to climb up further the ladder. 7TH - MANNINGHAM Last year the Cobras beat all the sides below them and snatched a victory over North Brunswick. Moving forward, the major news has been the appointment of Kead Beauliv as Senior Coach. Their main concern will be to get a consistent team on the park each week. Manningham gave a lot of players a run in the seniors, which reflected their inconsistency and only goalkicker Christopher Jolly was the only player to play every game. Winning 5 out of 16 games last year but, finishing 101% pts for/ THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016

against suggest, they are capable of better.
8TH - MASALA In the off-season, you could not help but, see Masala. Whether it be on the Footy Show, reporting about their new facilities or “Spicy Footy”, their recruiting drive. It seemed to be everywhere. With no shortage of players, Masala will again look to make teams take notice. With 2 wins last year (Sth Mornington and Chaddy), the battle for the wooden spoon will again be a 2 horse race with Chadstone. A pleasing practice game against SFL Div 3 premiers, Black Rock, Masala will very intent on no longer being easybeats 9TH - CHADSTONE Player retention has been the focus for the Synners every year and it hardly ever happens. Majority of the players are coming back (they think) but, Chadstone have also done well on the recruiting front. Whilst the main story over the pre-season was a potential women’s footy side, that idea has been shelved for 2017. What did fly under the radar was the appointment of new Senior coach, Jason Cotsis, a former Senior player and Reserves B&F. Jason knows what he’s up against and is preparing the guys well. After an encouraging pre-season, a practice run against Dandenong, the Synners need buy-in and they need it now. Or maybe round 2 after the bye.
PREVIEW With just the four games to be played week to week, there will be a lot of unknown quantities out there. To snatch a victory this week, will set-up your season. To the games for this week: Masla host North Brunswick at WJ Turner Reserve. Although we have pumped up all the sides, North Brunswick are expected to run out easy winners here. Point Cook will be travelling to Elgar Park to take on Box Hill North, which is going to earn this year’s first match of the round. This will be a coin toss. It’s landed on heads. Box Hill North JUST. Manningham to THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
host Westbourne at Koonung Reserve. Again, a match with unknown quantities. Will tip based on last year’s form. Westbourne. I’ll be heading down to Whitehorse Reserve to check out Eley Park and Mt. Lilydale. I’ll be interested to see Mt. Lilydales’ improvement and see what the Sharks have in store for the rest of the league. Eley Park. Chadstone have the bye, will move to 5th on the ladder and have the extra week to prepare and host Westbourne.

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
GRILL’D RISING STAR 2016 The Grill’d Rising Star will be awarded each week to a player under the age of 21 for their on-field performance and contribution to their team. The winner of 2016 Rising Star will then be selected from the weekly winners throughout the season. Last year’s winner was Peninsula OB’s, James Fletcher. The young gun took the competition by storm with his fierce competitive edge, leadership and midfield dominance. James earned the nomination after a stand out performance against Old Camberwell where he had 40+ possessions, 8 tackles and kicked 2 goals. James represented the VAFA during the U23 Carnival in Tasmania and showed he is more than capable of playing representative football and further despite still being eligible for the U19 side. James since earned himself a preseason at VFL level and will play a dominant role

5 YEARS AGO – 2011 In Premier Section, the closest game was the Old Carey v Old Trinity match although at half time, the OT’s held a comfortable 10.10 to 5.1 lead. Old Carey picked up the pace in the third quarter with 5 goals to 2 and their accuracy in front of goal was keeping them in the contest. In the last term, Old Carey maintained their attack on the ball and gradually closed the gap. With the clock running down Carey took the lead to run out winners 15.9 to 14.13. Best – Crozier, Reid (5), Rowe, Laidlaw, McQueen-Miscamble, Parton (OC) and Iezzi, Tinney, Aitken, Osborn, Pohl, Hore-Lacy (OT). In Premier B, Caulfield Grammarians made the journey to the Snake Pit to play St Bernards Old Collegians, a first for most if not all of the Field’s players. The day started well for Caulfield with their Reserves coming from 4 goals down at three quarter time to storm home with a 4 goal victory. The senior team completely ignored the reputation of ‘The Pit’ when they kicked 10.4 to 1 solitary behind in the first quarter and then kicked three more in the second quarter against the wind to match St Bernards. The 10 goal lead at half time was a surprise to many. The momentum change never occurred with the Grammarians running our easy winners 25.21 to 7.10. Best – Shanahan, L Price, Meredith (6), L O’Keefe, Pelchen, T Sundberg (Caulfield) and A Stapleton, M Stapleton, Sullivan, Madden, George, Cooke (St Bernards). James Shanahan (Caulfield Grammarians) won the Club Warehouse Rising Star nomination for round 1 with a scintillating display against St Bernards. James was still eligible for U19’s but on this initial performance seemed unlikely to be playing many if any games for the ‘Unders’. 10 YEARS AGO - 2006 It was a thriller in A Section between Uni Blues and Old Xaverians and A Section scribe, Jonathan Horn, reported that he had warmed his car up 20 minutes into the final term with the Blues up by 27 points, the Xavs seemingly in disarray, one of their players reported and another wanting to ‘have it out’ with a spectator. But something sparked the Xavs all of a sudden and they peppered the goals in the final minutes and snatched the match by 1 point in a most exciting opening round – 12.11 to 13.4. Best – Arnold, Ockleshaw, Chatfield, Johnston (3), MacCue, Scanlon (OX) and Clark (3), McKinnon, Rankin, Paterson, Kordick, Cassell (UB). In B Section, Whitefriars Old Collegians made a good 42
start to their season against Caulfield Grammarians and were never headed throughout the match, It was a low scoring affair and Caulfield’s inaccurate shots on goal didn’t help their cause. The Friars were well structured and their movement of the ball impressive. Best – Brosolo (5), Hill, Pawlik, Anderson, Cunningham, Phan (Whitefriars) and Carboni, Winter, Kellaway, Tassell, Frater, Kendall (Caulfield). Brett Collins (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) was the Club Warehouse Rising Star nomination after his excellent start to the season against Hampton Rovers. Brett, a year 12 student at Haileybury College, was also a promising cricketer with St Kilda in District Cricket. He had chosen to play footy for his school and for the Tigers for the season rather than the TAC Cup, preferring the club atmosphere of the VAFA although still with an eye on an AFL career in due course. Monash Blues placed a notice in The Amateur Footballer following the passing of one of their greatest contributors over the years. John White was an outstanding member at Monash Blues having served the club in many capacities including a term of 4 years as President. Those of us who met John and enjoyed after match hospitality with him over the years could confirm his passion for the Blues. John was a shining example of dedication to his club and to the principles of the VAFA.
20 YEARS AGO – 1996 The season opened with A Section grand finalists from 1995, Old Xavs and Uni Blues, both losing to Old Melburnians and Old Scotch respectively. Ormond, third in 95, also suffered defeat at the hands of Old Haileyburians. In B Section MHSOB had a pleasing win over Old Ivanhoe, 15.18 to 10.7 and went to the top of the ladder. Glover kicked 6 for High and was backed up by Harrison, Harries, Pertzel, Bamert (3) and Beazley. Old Ivanhoe’s best were Tully, Veale, Donaldson, Weddle, Pappas and Power whilst McLean bagged 5. Chris ‘D.C.’ Kenny became the second player to record 300 games for St Leos after starting in the U13’s in 75. D.C. enjoyed 7 premierships over the journey and was a tower of strength for his club in the ruck. Umpires Corner was written by Steve McCarthy and Anthony Damen. Macca and AD were pleased to announce the transition of Leah Gallagher from successful boundary umpire to the field job. Leah’s umpiring developed significantly over future seasons and she became a very competent field ump in the top sections. continued page 46

HOLMESGLEN UNDER 19
UNDER 19 PREMIER Another year of Under 19 football is before us and once again it looms as a tight year for all teams. The competition comprises of only 8 teams this season after Old Melburnians and Old Trinity were relegated, the competition decided an 8 team competition would be best suited for the Under 19 premier competition. To refresh everyone’s memory last year’s Grand Final was a great contest with Old Xaverians coming out on top of St.Bernards to the tune of 10pts. The Xavs put together a 15-2 season and went on to win the Premiership despite losing 2 previous games against St.Bernards during the season. The reigning premiers come in to 2016 again looking strong, retaining a number of players as well as gaining some new talent that will go a long way to helping them win the flag again. The boys from Claremont Sam Skinner, and Brynn O’Connor will provide a lot to an already strong Xavs side. Assistant coach Patrick Kennedy has said “we have had a strong preseason, we have a really good crop of second year players that will complement our exciting new comers, we are ready to go, we just want to get out on the park and have a crack”. The Xavs will unfurl their premiership flag at Toorak Park in round 2 as they play one of the early games before the seniors play a night game. Xavs take on Bernards in Round 1 and will be hoping to get revenge for the Grand Final loss. St.Kevins are always a strong side and this year will be no exception as they tackle the Sharks at Sportscover arena to kick off the season, both teams have had strong pre seasons and word out is that this Beaumaris under 19 side could be one of the best in recent seasons with some exciting new players joining the club. St.Kevins Holmesglen UNDER 19 Premier Old Melburnians v De La Salle Old Scotch v St Bernards Old Xaverians v Beaumaris University Blacks v Old Trinity
have an abundance of talent and will hope that there recent 1st XVIII success will filter down to the 19s playing group as they look for that premiership that has eluded them for a number of years. Scotch had a poor year last season but will look to bounce back in round 1 against Uni Blacks at Crawford oval, the Cardinals will likely lose their leading goalkicker from the last 2 seasons Andrew Padbury, he will most likely play senior football this season and that will be a big loss for the Scotch boys. Both Uni teams return, both had pretty poor seasons last year and will need to produce something special to be right up the top end of the ladder contending for a flag. Unfortunatley, with the big teams in this comp being very strong, I can’t see a spot for either Uni team this season, but will be hoping to challenge and be competitive throughout the season. My smoky for this year is De La, they showed last year that they are capable of a big season, they made a serious run for the finals in the back end of last season but came up just short, they will be an extremely hard side to beat once again and should get off to a quick start against Uni Blues on Saturday afternoon. Beware of De La, they are a strong club overall and their 19s have produced some serious players, if anyone is going to challenge Xavs, Bernards and Skobs, it will be this mob. It is going to be another interesting year and we are all excited to have the VAFA season back. Good luck to all teams competing this weekend and let’s get this season started!! THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
U19 SEC. 2 - AND SO IT BEGINS! Season 2016 promises to be a thrilling competition in Holmesglen under section two. Caulfield Grammar enter the season chock full of confidence after completing a stunning late season charge to upset Old Brighton in last year’s Grand Final. The Tonners will be seeking redemption after being the team to beat all season in 2015, only to dish up a disappointing performance on Grand Final day. Old Melburnians and Old Trinity headline the squads that have been relegated from the premier competition after disappointing seasons in 2015. Old Trinity in particular should thrive this season, boasting a talented young list of which many players will be seeking break into the senior squad. The newly promoted Old Carey team will be keen to prove themselves in a higher grade after dominating section three for much of 2015 on route to a memorable premiership victory. Whitefriars and Parkdale return to section two in 2016 following a season which promised so much and failed to fire late in the season. Both of these sides will be weary of the level of consistency required to make a run at the premiership. U19 SEC. 3 - GOOD TO BE BACK! Old Geelong will be looking to stamp themselves on section three following a season in which themselves and Old Carey established their respective teams as clear front runners throughout 2015. The Grand Final loss to the Panthers will sting Old Geelong as they look to learn from last season and go one step further in 2016. Collegians find themselves in section three after an indifferent 2015 in section two, and will be looking for a marked improvement this year. Peninsula OB will be eager to test their mettle against some stiff opposition after a disappointing end to their 2015 campaign, in which they finished runner up in section four to eventual premiers St Kevins. The Pirates only lost two matches last season, one of those being the Grand Final. Hampton Rovers have a knack of developing young talent and in 2016 we will see a new batch of players keen to make a name for themselves and catapult the Rovers into premiership contention. Holmesglen UNDER 19 Section 4 PEGS v UHS-VU Old Haileyburians v AJAX Aquinas v Therry Penola Preston Bullants v Monash Blues
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
U19 SEC. 4 - EXCITED TO BE BACK! As the weather begins to get cooler and preseason is coming to an end, excitement is brewing for the return of amateur football. If you’re a supporter, player, umpire or official the first bounce is going to bring a thrilling start to the 2016 season. The Holmesglen under 19 Section 4 teams will be giving it their all this year to secure there spot in the finals. Being a new team to the section can PEGS take out the silver wear? They have had a promising preseason making them a team to watch for round 1 when they take on another new rival Uhs-Vu which will no doubt be a fiery game at PEGS Sporting Fields. The almighty Old Haileyburians are a force to be reckoned with this season after just missing out on finals last year. They take on the new boys in town AJAX round 1, who are wanting to make an immediate impression on the comp. Aquinas who will be fiercely competitive this year will have their home ground advantage round 1 as they take on the Therry Penola who are a committed and determined side, looking to improve on last season’s effort. Will this be the Bullant’s year? Many think so as they are ready to take that next step to win the Premiership they so intensely desire. Preston Bullants will be facing one of their rivals from last season, Monash Blues who plan to bring the heat down at W. R. Ruthven Reserve.
U19 SEC. 5 - EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. 2016 brings more excitement revealing the new section 5 for the under 19s competition. All 8 teams are looking to make a mark and show everyone what they are made of. These teams predominantly feature under 18 footballers who are all bursting with white line fever. This will be an exciting season for all teams as it will be unpredictable from the first bounce so expect the unexpected and watch out for any under dogs which this comp will bring. Scotch were less fortunate and went down to Uni Blues 5.9 to 10.18. In B Section the promoted teams, East Malvern and Brunswick, stated their season on a high. Brunswick accounted for Commonwealth Bank 8.7 to 4.11 and East Malvern won by 32 points against MHSOB. East Malvern congratulated their “new lads” Graeme Compton, Neil Scott, Don Moss and Sid Myers (5 goals).

UMPIRES CORNER
@VAFAUA
AFL/VFL UMPIRES CONGRATULATIONS are extended to the following former VAFA Umpires who after a long preseason and trial period have been selected to umpire in the VFL/AFL VIC Development League/TAC Cup/Victorian Women’s Football League in 2016: Peter Bailes (Development Field) Matthew Clinton (Development Field) Cameron Dore (Development Field) Jacob Rockwell (Development Field) Patrick Dwyer (Development Goal)
PETER KEOGH CERTIFICATE OF MERIT RECIPIENT Congratulations to VAFAUA life member Peter Keogh on receiving the VAFA Certificate of Merit for service to the VAFA at the Season Launch on Wednesday night. Peter Keogh commenced his career in the VAFA as a player for Melbourne University U19’s in the early 1980’s, before a keen sense of justice and appreciation for the rule of law saw him join the VAFA umpires shortly after. He was awarded Life Membership of the VAFA Umpires Association and a 10-Year Service Award prior to retirement in the mid-90s. Peter returned to University Blacks as a Reserves Club Umpire and spent almost 20 years in the role where he was often congratulated on his talent with the whistle and natural ease with the players.
AFL DEBUT Congratulations to former VAFAUA member Matthew Dervan who made his AFL debut last weekend. Matt was Goal Umpire for the first time at the MCG in the match between Essendon and Melbourne. All of us at the VAFAUA wish Matt well for the remainder of the season!

THE ONLY PERMANENCE IS CHANGE Again this season there has been a marked change in the teams participating in Club XV111. The complement of participants has lessened from sixteen to fourteen with St Francis Xavier and Melbourne High School, who contested the 2015 Section 2 Grand Final moving up to Section 1 where they will be joined by newcomers, South Mornington. New teams in Section 2 will be Monash Blues and Gryphons as well as Swinburne University.
PREVIEW OF SETION 1 Round 1 is always a difficult one to forecast who will be successful because preparations vary from club to club and the availability of players is often unknown until season’s start. The “tyranny of distance” is illustrated today as debutants South Mornington make the long journey to Brunswick to play Brunswick/ North Old Boys/ St Patrick’s (surely the longest club name within the V.A.F.A.) Although the home team did not enjoy much 2015 success, I select them to win today because I suspect they will have completed more pre season training. Old Xaverians will welcome St Francis Xavier to the Section when they meet on Stradbroke Park this afternoon. News from Beaconsfield has been that, despite their 2015 success, St Francis player availability has been a concern.
58
Old Xaverians, whose record in this competition is without parallel, should prove too strong for their visitors today. Prahran/ Assumption play reigning Premiers, Hawthorn this morning on Toorak Park which is a marked change in the “Two Blue’s” home venue. I select Hawthorn because of their quicker ball movement and general match fitness especially given the Prahran/ Assumption slow starts in season’s past. Richmond Central welcome Melbourne High School to the Section at Bartlett Reserve. I select the home side to win, given their fine form in 2015 and the fact that “The Unicorns” have started each of their last two seasons slowly.
SECTION 2. In a morning match at Clayton two Monash University campus Clubs meet .The Caulfield Gryphons have experienced loss of players and so today they may be found wanting against their “Clayton Cousins” who are likely to have undergone a more stringent preparation Old Geelong, down from Section 1, meet newcomers Swinburne University, in a morning match on Como Park. The big ground will test the Swinburne side and I suspect that Old Geelong will start their season with a victory.
THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2016
Near neighbours, University High School/ V.U.T. meet West Brunswick on the Brens Oval at the unusual time of 10.30 a.m. West Brunswick in their second season should record victory because I suspect their preparation would be the stronger given their Club is on the crest of a wave of success.

WINNING EDGE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ST KEVINS TAKE OUT WINNING EDGE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP St Kevin Old Boys were standout winners of the 2015 Winning Edge Club Championships in what should be considered a remarkable year for the club! The club won their first senior final for almost a decade and has moved through several coaches since their 2004 premiership in Premier B. They appear set for William Buck Premier under the guidance of Daniel Harford and VAFA stalwart Jon Edgar. SKOBS led University Blues to the prize, who also claimed the award when they were in Premier B, in 2014 and the Old Xaverians in 2013. Good luck to all clubs in 2016 and we look forward to what should be another competitive Winning Edge Club Championship battle!
