EDITORIAL George Voyage – VAFA President
Welcome to everybody and let’s hope we can have a full and successful 2021 season.
• Expanded the PREPP Group; responsible for reviewing incoming permits, registrations, eligibility, and individual player points.
The year ahead promises to be full of challenges both on and off the field and hopefully all is in place to deliver a great season.
• Advisory groups for our various competitions
A lot of work has gone into the preparation for 2021 since the cancellation of the 2020 season.
• The Player Points situation is being revisited and continually monitored
Recently, we have welcomed three new VAFA Board Members in Dean Matthews, Frank Dunell and Terry McEvoy.
Concussion is a very serious focus and the VAFA policy, which is directly in line with the AFL policy, must be strictly adhered to.
It is opportune to also acknowledge the outstanding contribution from outgoing Board Member, Jeffrey Jankie, and of recent retiring long-time staff member, Brian Goodman.
The VAFA has joined with Monash University and the Alfred Hospital who are conducting research and treatment of head injuries. All clubs have been informed of this program which applies to all players of all ages, clubs, and divisions.
I would also like to recognise the efforts of our CEO and VAFA Administration team during the 2020 COVID crisis.
In addition, we have the COVID protocols which must be followed by everyone. It is absolutely essential that at all levels everyone observes the rules and follows the regulations.
The Board recently conducted an off-site meeting to discuss a range of issues and begin implementing the strategic plan for 2022-2024.
If there is a COVID disruption to the season, we ask that everyone be patient as we have flexibility in the fixturing, rules, and ladder calculations in case of such an occurrence.
The key over the next three years will be setting the direction for the Association and how we want to develop as a competition moving forward. Our core values and unchangeable rock are our amateur status and ethos. Our objective is to develop our strategy, plans and processes to ensure a high quality, progressive, amateur competition. We welcome back our Premium Partner: William Buck, Major Partners: Holmesglen Institute and Epworth and Official Sponsors: Bendigo Bank – East Malvern, Victor Sports, Concave Boots, Orthosport, BJS Insurance Group, Tahbilk, Anytime Fitness, Sherrin, Club Warehouse.
The year ahead promises to be full of challenges both on and off the field and hopefully all is in place to deliver a great season.
The modified alcohol policy is not to be misinterpreted to be anything other than what has been clearly outlined in our updated version of the policy. The two amendments will be introduced to encourage reserves players to remain on sight and, where possible, conduct their after-match presentation with a drink and bite to eat.
The other is to provide an extension to certain match-day luncheons. We hope this will be helpful in building relationships within each club. It is not to be considered an open slather drink-fest, and any transgression of the rules will not be tolerated.
We greatly value their vital contribution and support. With the season ahead, I would like to outline some of the key strategic matters the Board has been working on and will be implemented by our Admin staff:
Our media team is now live streaming matches every week throughout the home and away season, which will present exciting opportunities for clubs and sponsors alike.
Initiate new club support programs:
We are working closely with the VAFAUA to ensure a strong platform of enjoyment and respect to all officials as well as achieving key targets of standards, recruitment, and retention.
• Complete governance review • Consolidate commercial and fundraising initiatives • Facilities review • Execute on competition review recommendations
2021 will also see the introduction of our over 35 Masters competition.
• Undertake women’s umpiring campaign and pathways
I would also welcome all new Club Presidents, volunteers, and our whole VAFA community. We have missed each other and the wonderful competition. We are more than just football. We provide a safe, caring environment and a place of belonging for everyone.
• Elsternwick Park Precinct Plan • Update VAFA Environmental Policy • Update VAFA Alcohol Policy • Implement Diversity Policy
Good Luck! Let the 2021 season begin!
• Laying a platform for club sustainability

WILLIAM BUCK MEN’S PREMIER PREVIEW Nick Armistead
Panthers host Grand Final rematch as Xavs clash with SKOB University Blues A year off brought about significant change for the reigning premiers, but the Blues are no less intimidating than two years ago. After one season and a premiership added to his incredible CV, Heath Jamieson relocated to Queensland last year and the Blues replaced him with former Sydney Swan Jarred Moore at the helm. While the departures of players such as Clayton Hinkley, Luke Russell, Josh Green and Ross Young would decimate most sides, the Blues have since welcomed Alex Fasolo, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Hugh Goddard, Ed Vickers-Willis, Sam Grimley and Rhys Hultgren. If Brian Waldron thought the 2019 Blues was the strongest side we’ve ever seen on paper, the 2021 version has just gone Super Saiyan.
Old Melburnians There’s a lot of excitement at Old Melburnians heading in 2021, and for good reason. Paul Satterley has taken the reigns as senior coach following a remarkable stint from Nathan Brown, and he will bring the run and gun style that took De La and Old Xaverians to finals in recent years. Sam Dunell is the key inclusion for OM’s alongside former Blacker Lachie Haysman and his brother Josh. Josh Freezer, Tom Paule, Gus Borthwick (2019 Premier Coaches MVP) and Jackson Paine are the backbone of this talent-riddled team, and there’s a sense of anticipation that this may be the year that leads to Premier finals. St Bernard’s Speaking to new senior coach Paul Groves on last week’s FTLOTG VAFA Podcast, expect to see a younger St Bernard’s side running around the Snake Pit in 2021. Michael Caven, Conor Riley, Luke Di Lizio and Chris Peart are the key departures, but a fit Simon Caven and internal growth of Charlie Vague, Marcus Holland, Ben Huggard et al, the Snow Dogs will certainly test sides in front of the home crowd.
St Kevin’s OB Since 2015, SKOB has been the strongest outfit in the VAFA, but fell short of a third consecutive William Buck flag against Uni Blues in 2019. The biggest change from a structural point of view is the retirement of club champion, Anthony Lynch, but SKOB supporters will be salivating over the return of Tom Jok. Patrick Kerr, Jarryd Cachia and Josh Wallis come in and we could witness a Jarrad Waite/ Tom Boyd forward 50. With VFL and Big V duo, Gerard Gleeson and Billy Kanakis, set to spend more time at the club, the possibilities here start and end with finals.
Old Trinity As a Trinity (and Big V ) supporter, this year’s celebrations started when Anthony Scott debuted for the Western Bulldogs in Round 1. The T’s will be looking to maintain the momentum of Scotty’s incredible rise when they look to improve upon their five wins from 2019. Jack Hunt is one notable exit from their 2019 team but the T’s appear relatively unchanged. They’re hosting the highlight of the first few rounds with a Friday night Round 2 clash against OM’s.
Old Xaverians After finishing second at the end of the 2019 home and away season and then bowing out in straight sets, Old Xaverians set about ensuring history doesn’t repeat in 2021. James Byrne will lead the Xavs in his first season as senior coach, with the additions of Ryan Schoenmakers ( Hawthorn), Xavier Richards (Sydney) and Sam Crocker (Old Carey) joining Rohan Bewick, Matt Handley, Jason Holmes, Will Hams, Dan Robinson and a host of young talent. Those are names that can (and will) go toe-to-toe with the most recent grand finalists.
Caulfield Grammarians After claiming the Premier B flag in their last game, the Fields return to William Buck Premier for the first time since 2012. If that wasn’t cause for celebration enough, they’ll be kickstarting it all with a centenary match against OM’s as both sides commemorate their 101st birthdays. Former Port forward Brett Eddy will add serious talent and experience to their best 22, while Julian Debosz returns after leaving for Tasmania last year.
Collegians Collegians is another team heading into the season under the leadership of a new senior coach, with Jared Rivers settling in at Harry Trott for the past 18 months. While they’ve lost forward trio Lachie Ferguson (Wonthaggi), Will Johnson (Sorrento) and Anthony Bruhn (Warragul Industrials), the Lions have gained serious talent and leadership in former Docker and Giant Tom Sheridan, Bulldogs VFL captain Josh Prudden and ex- Hawk David Mirra. Sam Hibbins will excel as skipper and, if the Lions can stay healthy, they are clearly in the finals mix.
Old Scotch Fittingly, Old Scotch return to William Buck Premier in the same year they celebrate 100 years as a club. After launching their season (and Centenary Book) last week, the Cardinals will be looking to solidify their spot in Premier under the leadership of Mark Gnatt and Gene Van Den Broek. They’ll be without star onballer Nick Jamieson but will hopefully get games out of VFL-listed players such as Tom Downie and Charlie Cormack.
Old Brighton The Tonners were as exciting as any side in 2019, finishing fifth and just half a game short of finals. Will Lewis, Nick Pavlou, Hamish Dick ( Rising Star winner) and Lachie Filipovic were players who took their game to the next level, while Harry Hill, Tom Fisher, and Anthony Zimmerman are worth the price of carparking at Brighton Beach. A team who has relied heavily on the school for talent over the past few years, one cannot wait to see how the inclusion of former Brighton student and number one draft pick, Jack Watts, is going to take Greg Hutchison’s boys to another level.

PREMIER B MEN’S PREVIEW Jake Morris
Scotch, Fields & Blacks flex as 2019 gets underway. The lasting images of Tim Nixon, Simon Williams and the Caulfield Grammarians hoisting the Premier B flag after a dominant grand final victory was the last sign of normalcy seen for over 560 days. This Saturday, our great game returns to the community with local grounds buzzing with excitement as another year of Premier B action gets underway.
well as a long list of returning big names led by Matt Petering, the Sharks will continue to circle and be a dangerous presence across the season. Arguably neck and neck with Caulfield Grammarians and Old Scotch in 2019, University Blacks missed the promotion cut by a measly five points in a classic preliminary final for the second year in a row. In what was described as their ‘best recruitment period for five years’, the Blackers retained their strong list while adding former VFL players Mitch Rodd and Lachlan Waddell, while the signing of James Sansom from Old Scotch and Matt Dea last year puts them well and truly in the hunt for a flag and return to William Buck Premier. Finishing one game above the relegation cut off in 2019 thanks to a strong final two weeks, Fitzroy are primed for a bounce back season. The return of premiership winning coach Luke Mahoney on top of a strong off-season headlined by the signings of Nick Devereux and Tom Wilson, plus a regular Nino Lazzaro, as well as continued development of youngsters Jack Hart and Donovan Toohey, the Roys are on the way up the Premier B standings.
Let’s begin with the new additions to the competition for season 2021 with Old Carey, returning to Prem B after a short stint in William Buck Premier. They face off against a feisty Ajax who slot back into the competition also after a single year away in Prem C. A disappointing 2019 in William Buck Premier saw the Panthers come away with just one victory, but with a fresh start in Prem B and a new coach at the helm in the much respected and renowned Simon Pasinati, a much brighter outlook is ahead at Carey. The Jackers used a late-season surge in 2019 to propel themselves into an unlikely grand final and almost knocked off the unbeaten Williamstown CYMS, earning a recall to Premier B this year. Despite the departure of club legend David Fayman, the Jackers have retooled and reloaded for another long stint in Premier B, and upwards. Joining the Panthers in Premier B in 2021 is De La Salle, who return to the Association’s second rung for the first time since 2005 after a heartbreaking Round 18 loss to Old Trinity. The loss of head coach Peter Schwab is notable, but the return of David Madigan to the helm will supply a familiar style of a play that made them an A-grade regular for over a decade. Top recruits Fraser Cameron and Darren Minchington will also pay huge dividends as the Dees look to return to the leagues top grade. Their opponent for Round 1 is Old Haileybury, who return after a middling, inconsistent 2019 season that showed flashes of promise, but ultimately fell short in a lot of aspects. For 2021, the inclusion of former Blood Brede Seccull from Sandringham (VFL) plus Jack Ross, Cam Polson, Noah Gown, Jack Bell and former Pirate Harry Whitty, will provide a huge boost around the ball.
Our final clash for Round 1 features St Bedes/Mentone Tigers and Premier B mainstays Parkdale Vultures. Other than welcoming their new coach Adrian McBean for his first game in the top job, the Tigers are also unveiling their brand-new playing facilities at Brindisi Street Oval which look outstanding. To top it off, the last of Luke Beveridge’s premiership heroes from 06’, 07’ and 08’, Simon Richards will go around once more in 2021, a big boost for the young list. Suffering through an incredibly tough 2020, the Vultures suffered a mass player exodus that will all but certainly force head coach Owen Lalor to take a youthful approach, focusing on staying competitive and improving on a tremendously young list. The days of the mid-2010s Vultures may be gone, but the rise of a new breed out at Parkdale is just beginning.
ROUND 1 TIPS
Now going on over 945 days since their last loss, Williamstown CYMS have entered Premier B for the first time in their 37-year stay in the VAFA, an incredible accomplishment. Headlined by the signing of premiership Bulldog, Clay Smith, as midfield coach to a stacked centre line led by star Yuma Hemphill, the sky is the limit for the CYs in 2021. Their Round 1 clash comes against Beaumaris, who once again proved in 2019 that they belong in this competition, with a top-4 finish and multiple big-name scalps next to their name. Bluey McKenna returns for another stint at the helm, as THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2021

PREMIER C MEN’S PREVIEW Jack Keleher
The smell of football is in the air, and excitement continues to brew as the long, long, long wait for Premier C football comes closer and closer.
2019 semi-final, Old Ivanhoe are ready to show their strength in 2021. Key additions in Jaryd Robertson, Chris Richards and Luke Velluto (all SBMT) have bolstered a list already sprinkled with talent. Look for Mal Mitris to ensure Old Ivanhoe is a premiership favourite this year.
After a heartbreaking 2018 finals campaign, Williamstown CYMS turned it all around and brought home the chocolates in 2019 – beating a red-hot Ajax (who had won nine games on the trot) by 18 points. We wish both teams the best as they pursue glory in Premier B.
Old Mentone Mentone finished two games off finals in 2019 and is hopeful to take that next step in 2021. While Mentone has lost a few players interstate, most notably Lachlan Boyd, the Panthers have retained Billy Chapman and Comrey Edgeworth who will be aided by the assistance of star recruit Lachlan Mirams (SBMT). There is plenty of young and exciting talent that should see Old Mentone in the mix this season.
On the other side of the table, an undermanned PEGS side could not get over the hump and leave the Premier sections after two years. Old Camberwell has been a Premier C staple for over a decade now and the Wellers are poised to do some damage in Division 1 this year. Now on to the season preview. Hampton Rovers Hampton Rovers struggled in their first year back in the Premier sections finishing 8th with a 6-11-1 record. Despite this, there is plenty of hope entering 2021. With Christian Carnovale fit and healthy, and returning quality in Benji Auggie, Chris Perkins and Cam Morris, Boss James Reserve is set to see more wins in 2021.
Ormond The Monders were heartbroken to have been knocked out in straight sets after such a promising first season back in Premier C. However, 2021 looks to be another one where Ormond should create more than intrigue. While the Monders lost Big V B-D4 representative, Blair Atkins, new coach Greg Hoskin has been able to recruit twotime AFL premiership player Matt Suckling. The Buckleys and Hines headline a very strong core group that has been further bolstered by returning key position player Tim Allan. The Monders look to take that step that eluded them in 2019 and they looked poised to do so.
Marcellin Marcellin looks to enter 2021 with a band of quality youngsters including Josh Atwell, Daniel Di Paola and Will Campitelli. The big inclusion for the Eagles is Jordan Perry who looks to make a strong impression on Premier C after playing some strong footy for years in the NFNL’s Division 1. The Eagles may be a force once again in the section.
Preston Bullants The Bullants enter the Premier sections for the first time in their history after securing a fourth premiership in seven seasons. With several returning players who missed the 2019 flag, back-to-back LS Pepper Medal winner, Sean Calcedo, and key additions in Sam Baker (Fitzroy), Damian Galofaro (Northcote Park) and Ben Irving (Heidelberg), Preston are one to watch in 2021.
Mazenod In their first year back in Premier C, the Nodders saw a strong end to the season fall just short of a finals berth. Joshua Muling and Mitchel D’Angelo will keep Mazenod more than competitive this year as they enter 2021 with a relatively unchanged list.
UHS-VU UHS-VU has entered the Premier divisions for the first time since 1977. 2019 saw the Vultures fall 10 points short of a three-peat, and the team will now try for four straight promotions. Tom Rocke (St Bernard’s) and Kane Moroney (Goulburn Valley) provide plenty of excitement, however, the loss of significant talent in Brandon Jackson, Tom Waters and Nick Devereux leaves UHS-VU as the ultimate unknown in 2021.
Monash Blues Back-to-back years finishing 4-14 saw the Blues relegated to Premier C for the first time since 2015. The club has had key departures in Keegan Mason, Nick Petering, Gareth Taylor and Charlie Rossetti, however, returning players in Nick Woodland, Sam Simpson, Sam Le Leivre and Riley Smart gives the Blues plenty of optimism heading into Prem C.
ROUND 1 TIPS
Old Geelong Relegated on percentage is a hard way to finish your first season in Premier B, however, the Oggers have proved they have the talent and the coaching – with former OM’s coach Nathan Brown taking his expertise to Como Park - to succeed in Premier C. Scott Dixon and John Simson look to improve their strong years in Premier B, and new recruits Nick Anstey and Alex Money look to show their strength in 2021. The Oggers are likely to be a real contender.

Certificate of Merit Awardees The VAFA kickstarted its 2021 season with the VAFA William Buck Season Launch last Wednesday night at the MCC Member’s Dining Room (amazing set-up as usual!). 10 incredible club volunteers were recognised for their unwavering support of their clubs and the Association with Certificate of Merit Awards. Congratulations to Kylie da Fonte (MHSOB), Stephen Manning (Ormond AFC), John Pilkington (Tribunal), John Robinson (VAFA), Phil Skeggs (Ivanhoe AFC), Terry Symons (Parkdale Vultures), Scott Williams (Caulfield Grammarians), Mick O’Leary (Therry Penola), Richard Simon (Ormond AFC) and Gerry Westmore (Uni Blues).
VAFA Life Membership An important and prestigious part of the night was the induction of the VAFA’s newest Life Members, Peter Nash and Michael Hazell. Peter Nash’s (our 60th Life Member) involvement with the VAFA dates back to 1989 when his sports insurance company, Sportscover, first partnered with the Association. Peter’s support for the VAFA has been two-pronged over 28 years: 1) As a major financial partner with a cutting edge and competitive sports insurance model for VAFA clubs, and 2) As an advocate providing support and expertise during some very challenging times. Unfortunately, due to illness, Michael was unable to attend, and he will be formally inducted at a later date. We wish Michael all the best in his recovery.
Brian ‘Benny’ Goodman Presentation As part of the night, Brian ‘Benny’ Goodman was recognised for his 55 years of involvement with the Association, dating back to 1965 when he first wore a Brunswick FC jumper. Benny, who retired from the VAFA last year, played 106 games for Brunswick, umpired 347 senior VAFA games (inc 55 finals!) and 17 rep matches, and worked full-time for the Ammos since 2004 – what a career! Enjoy retirement, Benny.

Will Pucovski As far as special guests go, they don’t come more high profile than current Australian Test opener, Will Pucovski. Pucovski, a Brighton Grammar alumnus and Old Brighton supporter in the VAFA, spoke with MC Nat Edwards about everything from debuting at Test level to his support for the Collingwood FC.
Cobras Catch a Chomper We all know supporters are the backbone of any football club so we’re pretty excited to see that Canterbury stalwart Sean ‘Woody’ Woodward has managed to secure Channel 9’s king of the Sunday Footy Show, Tony Jones, as the latest Cobra fan. We’re sure he’s Chomping at the bit to get down to Canterbury Sports Ground. Let’s hope he pays if they make finals this year…
Ray Kilner receives 1958 Zachariah Medal 63 years is a long time in footy, but not long enough to curb the enthusiasm surrounding former Malvern Amateurs star, Ray Kilner, who was presented with his 1958 Lou Zachariah Medal two weeks ago. In front of a packed community centre at Bundoora Retirement Village, VAFA CEO Brett Connell presented Kilner with his medallion more than six decades after winning it with 26 votes. “It’s a great honour to receive this medal,” Kilner said. “I want to thank my family, Norm Nugent, the Village and the VAFA for making tonight happen.” Kilner, who captained Malvern during the 1958 season, was named best-on-ground six times throughout the year. That was despite his side winning just five games. Twice he polled two votes while he registered one on four occasions. He also kicked 23 goals for the season, including four against archrivals East Malvern in the Battle of Gardiner’s Creek. From the club’s perspective, Kilner was named in the best 15 times from 18 games. 9

DIVISION 1 MEN’S PREVIEW Lachlan Shaw
Whitefriars
2019 season where they won just two games on its way to the wooden spoon in Premier C.
The Friars have been promoted to Division 1 following success in 2019, winning every game of the season to claim the Division 2 premiership against their rivals Brunswick. Senior coach Kristian Height will again be in charge with the leadership team consisting of Ben Galtieri, Michael Nitas, Adam Pearson, James Connellan, Christian Feher and Calvin Spencer as they embark on the journey for back-to-back premierships, albeit 18 months later.
Old Peninsula After sneaking their way into finals on percentage, Old Peninsula were just seconds away from a grand final berth if not for an afterthe-siren goals from UHS-VU in extra-time. They’ll certainly be buoyed by six inclusions from the notoriously strong MPFNL. An early highlight of the season will come in Round 1, as club veteran Shaun Payze plays his 400 th VAFA game.
Brunswick FC
Kew
Brunswick has also been promoted to the Division 1 ranks due to a strong showing in 2019, despite losing the Grand Final to Whitefriars by 25 points. Former Richmond AFLW coach Tom Hunter will take the reins this season as he aims for success with the NOBS. Angus Coverdale, Luka Vlassopoulos, Will McKenzie and Thaj Haddock are arguably most ready to hit the ground running for 2021 after getting a taste for football in the Northern Territory over the summer period.
The Bears enjoyed a great season in 2019, winning 12 games on its way to third on the ladder, but were unfortunately knocked out in the first week of finals by Peninsula. The club was buoyed by the recent re-commitment of Nick Thornely, brothers Max and Ned Waters and co-captain Jack Delbridge. With the 2019 semi-final knock out still on its minds, a clear goal this season will be finding ways to go one or two steps further as they look to maintain their reputation as a Division 1 threat.
Old Camberwell
Prahran Assumption
A disappointing season in 2019 where the Wellers finished ninth on the ladder with just five wins sees them relegated from Premier C to Division 1 for 2021. They did, however, beat Marcellin twice in 2019 and won two of their last three games. Known for their proud and inclusive culture, the senior side will be out with a point to prove this season as they try to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
Despite a poor season in 2019 where they finished eighth on the ladder with just five wins, the Blues have managed to retain its place in Division 1 for this season and strengthen their list. The club will welcome new recruits Kai Bloomfield, Aaron Jory, Jackson Boland, Zac Podmore, Jack Beard, Bonnar Mahains and Rory Brodie onboard for 2021. Just as importantly, they’ll be led by Matt Boland and his two mates, Matt Clifford and Adam Collett. They will look towards club regulars like Beau Adams, James Musster, Jay Thompson, James Gottschalk and Ryan Costin to help recapture its premiership winning form seen during the early to mid-2010s.
Therry Penola OB Therry Penola will enter 2021 looking to improve on its 2019 performance, having missed the opportunity to play finals by 15% percentage on the ladder but still having claimed 11 wins. Damien Peverill will once again lead the Lions from the front, re-signing as senior coach. With the season just around the corner, they will be looking to unleash a host of new faces into the senior side to help its cause for further success.
St Mary’s Salesian 2019 saw St Mary’s score eight victories but fail to make the finals. However, under the leadership of co-captains Manny Dolan and Louis Holmes, the club will be searching for ways to improve as they have another crack at playing finals. A bevy of fresh recruits have come across; including, Brett Gatehouse.
Oakleigh Like the Lions, Oakleigh were also extremely unfortunate to miss out on the chance to play finals in 2019, missing out by less than 4% to Old Peninsula. With a renewed focus to do well after a season of no football, senior coach Ash Lever will be trying to extract the very best in his troops to ensure they can move forward in 2021.
ROUND 1 TIPS
PEGS PEGS will have a breath of fresh air this season as they welcome David Calthorpe onboard as its senior coach following the departure of premiership coach, Dane Pound. A former 114-game AFL player for Essendon, Brisbane and North Melbourne, Calthorpe has an abundance of previous coaching experience and will be aiming to lead his new club back up the ladder following a tough THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2021

DIVISION 2 MEN’S PREVIEW Stuart Kavanagh
A look ahead at the 2021 season With the sports lover’s nightmare of 2020 behind us, it’s time to revel in the fact that footy is back! From the MCG to your local foody club and everywhere in between, the fans are flocking back to the footy. So, with that in mind let’s take a look at how each of the VAFA Division 2 Men’s teams are shaping up as the new season looms.
coach Bernie Pretty calling the shots from the sidelines, could this be Melbourne High School Old Boys year? OLD PARADIANS Dropping down from Division 1 this season, the Old Paradians have overseen quite a bit of change since 2019. The most obvious of course is the new blue playing strip which sees them pay homage to their original 1929 guernsey. A new captain in Marcus Nolan replaces the club’s longest serving captain in Chris Kandilakis. Marcus, a club icon in his own right, has strong family lineage at the club with his Uncle Frank one of the legendary Paradians from yesteryear. With some solid promotions from the U19s squad mixing with the talent already on hand – look for a strong showing this season from the Parade.
AQUINAS 2019 Division 3 Premiers – The Bloods – move into Division 2 after a thrilling Grand Final win over the Cobras. They move into the division for the first time since 2011. The Bloods will be hoping to maintain their Division 2 status, with an eye on moving up divisions yet again. BULLEEN TEMPLESTOWE After a solid, if unspectacular 2019 campaign, the Bullants look ahead at the 2021 season looking to push up the ladder and improve on their mid table status. A return to the glory days of the early parts of the last decade beckons, and with the anomaly of having essentially an 18-month pre-season, coach Jason Reynolds and his side will be licking their lips at the prospect of delivering just that in 2021.
POWER HOUSE Recruitment aplenty for the boys down at “The House” as they look to right the wrongs of a disappointing 2019 season. A mixture of both promotions from their youth side and some solid signings, including the return of Fiachra O’Deasmhunaigh, will have senior coach Anthony McMahon bullish in the clubs attempts at moving up the Division 2 ladder this season.
GLEN EIRA Coming off a third-placed finish in 2019 home and away season, Jon Edgar’s Glen Eira are one of the strongest sides in the division this season. Solid pre-season wins against Division 1 opposition have solidified their position as one of the big danger sides heading into the new season. Promotions from their U19 side from last season and the ability to maintain the majority of their 2019 senior playing list might signal a perfect storm brewing for a premiership assault for the mighty Gryphons.
WEST BRUNSWICK The drop to Division 2 for the Magpies might be a one season thing if the view from “the bird’s nest” can be reckoned with. The community that supports WBAFC is second to none – with their fundraising efforts the envy of sporting clubs throughout the state – and if the football department can match the fans and members efforts in that regard look for the Magpies to dominate the 2021 season. An influx of St Bernard’s players has added serious depth to the Westies list.
IVANHOE AFC The Magpies head into the 2021 season after a tough 2019 whereby they won five of their 16 games. They were still three games clear of relegation and managed to their Division 2 status comfortably. They have attracted a raft of new talent, including a couple of Murray FL players, and can look forward to a clean slate in 2021 amidst higher expectations from their fanbase.
YARRA OLD GRAMMARIANS The Bushrangers finished the 2019 season in the midtable logjam on 40 points. Former AFL umpire Michael Vozzo is in the hotseat for the 2021 campaign, and I’m sure he’ll have the utmost confidence in the talent that has come into the club led by Nick Agius. So that’s that. Every side in the VAFA Division 2 Men’s competition previewed for the new season. After the COVID-19 pandemic ruined things for all football fans in 2020, let’s all revel in its return for the 2021 season!
MANNINGHAM COBRAS After a spectacular Division 3 campaign which saw them drop only one game in the regular season ended with a heartbreaking two-point defeat in the grand final, the Cobras will be keen to impose themselves this campaign. Michael Muller (c) leads a new leadership group consisting of Adam Baltruweit (vc), Mitch Keltie and Thomas Flood. Manningham will be one of the teams to watch this year.
ROUND 1 TIPS
MHSOB After an excruciating preliminary final loss last season still fresh in the memory of fans and players alike, the Unicorns head into 2021 with redemption in the form of a premiership their target. A solid preseason holds them in good stead to achieve this. With THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2021

DIVISION 3 MEN’S PREVIEW Sheridan Harris
Emmaus St Leo’s
for the Bulls is that they avoided relegation and are aiming to make the coming season a competitive one in Division 3. By the time they take the field in 2021, it will have been two years and four days since they left the field winners, so their first round game against Hawthorn is set to be a fierce contest.
It was a rough end to Emmaus St Leo’s 2019 senior campaign as they fell agonisingly short in giving club champion Paul Baranello the send-off he thoroughly deserved, going down in a fierce preliminary final to Manningham Cobras. The Animals will look to go one better and continue their club’s successes, with an injection of youth into the side after heavy recruitment efforts has sent their numbers through the roof and instilled a great belief that Emmaus St Leo’s will have a very successful and competitive campaign in 2021.
Hawthorn AFC After a disappointing 2019, finishing last on the Division 2 ladder, Hawthorn will be aiming to rebound quickly back in Division 3. With additions like Hugh Clancey and Jason Cowland adding to a team full of experienced players, including Aaron Downie and Ryan McElgunn, it is not a shock that there is plenty of optimism for the coming season. They had a coaching change as recently as last week, with Justin Raiti replacing David Knight on the eve of the season. Overall, the Hawks are a team buzzing after a successful pre-season, where trust and understanding of the game plan is high.
Westbourne Grammarians 2019 was an interesting season for Westbourne Grammarians, whose win/loss ratio finished at 7-7. After narrowly missing finals and finishing 5th on the ladder, 2021 is set to be a competitive campaign for those at Warrior Park as 2020 head coach Brett Kennerley leads the club in celebrating their 30 th year. Ali Eqbal is also returning in 2021 for his 8th season at Westbourne, after his form in front of goals resulted in being their 2019 leading scorer. Joining him is Adam Rompel, having recommitted as captain in a bid to lead his team to finals.
Richmond Central 2020 saw a lot of player turnover for Richmond Central, but the following months has seen a lot of men returning for the Snakes, who look like a whole-rounded group led by a strong coaching panel. Expect Richmond Central to go better than their 2019 form and push for top four. In a feel-good story of the year, Dane Roy is set to return for the Snakes in 2021, adding to his senior game tally after spending time overseas, plying his trade as a punter in college football.
Canterbury Canterbury will be looking to go two better than they did in 2019, after going down to Emmaus St Leo’s in the semi-final. They finished fourth on the ladder but only by percentage, with the Animals coming out on third despite sharing an 8-6 win/loss ratio. The Cobras will hope for some repeat heroics from their 2019 leading goal scorer Nathan Hicks when they take the field this year.
Albert Park Albert Park return to Division 3 after falling short in the 2019 Div 4 decider against St Francis Xavier. They won 12 games en route to the finals and will be buoyed by the re-scheduling of the Melbourne Grand Prix whereby they now have nine home games at Beaurepaire Pavilion. The team went internal and welcomed a new senior coach in former assistant Brett Tottenham. Despite losing quality personnel in the form of Josh Beets and Tom Wilson, they have strengthened their ties with Tasmania with Sam Lee joining his brother, Jack.
Parkside After following North Brunswick to Division 3 on the back of a grand final appearance in 2018, 2019 was a struggle for Parkside, finishing 7th on the ladder with three wins and 11 losses. The coming season should be relatively competitive for the Red Devils as they welcome an influx of young players ready to pull on the red and white. Their first game of the season will be one to watch as they take on divisional newcomers Albert Park away from home which is a perfect opportunity to unite as a team and start the year well.
ROUND 1 TIPS
North Brunswick The 2019 season was a rough one for North Brunswick, who finished last on the ladder with one win. This was despite starting their campaign off with a comprehensive 89-point win over Westbourne in Round 1. Even so, the silver lining

competition. They finished seventh (from nine) in 2019 with four wins to their name, so with Ben Abraham, Declan Fowler, Anthony Morabito and Sam Freeman roaming around, expect internal improvement across the board for the Tigers.
An influx of youthful talent has brought an exciting optimism over the preseason to Elgar Park, as Box Hill North look to improve from a disappointing 2019 campaign. While some will be pulling on the red and blue for the first time this season, the likes of Sean Donovan and Rowan Lawrence along with Eley Park recruit Peter Cassidy-Marsh will lead the way young Demons. Look for steady improvement throughout 2021 for Box Hill North.
SOUTH MELBOURNE DISTRICTS With a quality crop of under 19’s talent stepping up into its senior teams, along with its strongest off-season recruitment in recent years, South Melbourne Districts are primed for the 2021 season. Strong showings in practice matches against Albert Park and Hampden, outlined the spread of talent on hand for the young Bloods, with new ruckman Breshan Jones and talented youngster Tom Foley the standouts. Expect South Melbourne Districts to feature prominently in the latter stages of the season.
ELEY PARK SHARKS After missing finals by a solitary game in 2019, Eley Park will be looking to go one better in 2021. A strong preseason has produced some encouraging practice match form, with an exciting new brand of football on display at Shark Park. Recruits Lachlan Steele and Justin Cuzzupi have been flagged as ones to watch since joining the club this off-season, joining Jayden Pritchard and Jesiah McGarvie as the Sharks push for a finals berth this season.
ST JOHNS Returning to divisional footy in 2021, St. Johns is well and truly on its way up after spending 2019 in Thirds. Whilst 2021 will be St. Johns first season in Division 4, the unknown has brought a sense of excitement within the club regarding its prospects this year. Led again by Corey Ely and Rohan Scott, St. Johns have been able to lure back some key players with forwards Aaron Thornton and Josh Morant joining Nathan McConchie at Thomas Carroll Reserve. St. Johns may just be the dark horse of Division 4.
ELSTERNWICK AFC With 11 wins under the belt in the 2019 season and a semifinal appearance, Elsternwick are primed with their eyes firmly set on a flag. There have been exciting changes to the club over the past 18 months as they look forward to introducing a women’s and thirds team for the first time in 2021. The loss of Julian Yeatman to SNFL will undoubtedly be noticed after he kicked 61 goals in 2019, but if there’s one man who can pick up the slack, it is no doubt the Wicker’s full-forward, Justin Hunter.
SWINBURNE UNIVERSITY AFC Another club returning to divisional football, Swinburne are looking to continue building off its core group from the past couple of seasons, as it looks towards a potential finals berth in 2021. The additions of Glen Lovett and exciting soccer convert Mitchell Walker up forward will provide dynamic targets for midfield bulls Zach Cooke, Declan Watts and Chris Fisher, all of whom have impressed in a strong preseason at St. James Park. Expect the Razorbacks to be in contention for a fourth spot come seasons end.
LA TROBE UNIVERSITY An eagerness at La Trobe has been noticeable this preseason, as training has progressed from strength to strength as the season draws near. Having retained its core group of players from 2019, the likes of Matt Ogle, Ricky Nolan, Andy Castles and Lachlan Miller coupled with a new influx of talent, has helped to drive standards over the off-season. Watch for La Trobe to be one of the big improvers throughout 2021.

VAFA WOMEN’S REPORT Lana Ryan
Caulfield Grammarians
Old Xaverians
2019 was a successful year for Caulfield Grammarians, taking home the premiership flag in Premier B with a 14-point victory over Old Xaverians. Now back in William Buck Premier, Caulfield are looking to continue their winning streak and will hit the ground running with new additions Beth Supple (Glen Eira), Vanessa Tyer (Old Geelong), Ash Rich, Shanae Carter and Paulina Tragarz. The loss of Alice Edmonds will be noticed but the Fields will be a strong contender.
Falling short by 14 points in the Premier B Grand Final, Old Xaverians have made their way back to William Buck Premier. Two big additions from AFLW will change things up this season, with former North Melbourne Head Coach Scott Gowans now on board as well as former Carlton and Brisbane AFLW star Bella Ayr hitting the field. Despite losing Riley Christgoergl to Aquinas, new additions in Kate Salemme, Zoe Purcell and Ella Kennedy (Old Scotch) are sure to bolster the list.
Kew FC
SKOB Saints
Finishing up 6th on the ladder last season, Kew have their sights set on finals come 2021. With a considerable turnover this year, including new addition Lucy Brusamarella from Eastern Football Netball League, the squad is sitting strong. Ball-magnet Michaela Harding will be returning to the field, and no doubt superstar Lily Barr will also add some serious value if her incredible VAFA Media Day showcase is anything to go by. Be sure to keep an eye on Kew in 2021.
2019 was a very successful year for SKOB Saints, taking home the coveted William Buck Premier flag. With plenty of youngsters coming through the club, there’s a lot of fresh talent around the more experienced heads. The loss of Big V ruck Ali Hynes to St Kilda VFLW will be felt by the squad, but the retention of star forwards Sarah Cameron (co-captain) and Margaret Gleeson (vice-captain) will help them in their quest for back-to-back silverware.
Marcellin OC
St Mary’s Salesian just narrowly missed out on finals last season after coming up from Premier B and are hopeful to take it all the way this time around. Exciting new additions at Ferndale Park include Adelaide product Nicola Burns and Abbey Goullet, with Big V forward Stephanie Lawrence looking to crack into the William Buck Premier high scorers’ list for a second year running while playing for Carlton VFL. Looking to improve upon their seven wins in 2019, St Mary’s could be a real contender this season.
St Mary’s Salesian
Losing the semi-final by a painful 5 points to eventual runners-up West Brunswick, Marcellin are ready to make some noise this season. They have a huge advantage with 2019 rising star nominee and Division 2 lead goal kicker Cecilia Baldassarre joining the side from Old Ivanhoe. No doubt the score boards will be lighting up with Shaylee Taylor, lead scorer in William Buck Premier for two consecutive seasons, staying on to shine in the forward line. This stellar pair will undoubtedly make Marcellin one to watch in 2021. Old Trinity Missing out on grand final appearance with a nine-point loss to West Brunswick in the prelim, Old Trinity will be looking to show their strength come Round 1. Two key VFL signings will cause some headaches, with Collingwood VFL gaining ruck and reining William Buck Premier best & fairest Imogen Barnett and Big V captain Vanessa Murphy also listed at VFL level. The arrival of fresh talent Sarah Poulton to the squad should offer the T’s assistance as they look to build on their minor premiership and take the next step this year. THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2021

Attracting the likes of Lily Kerr, Grace Farrant (St Bernard’s), Georgia Cornell, Olivia Woods as well as Alice Long and Sarah Robinson from Old Geelong. Hungry to take home the title after falling 9 points short in the 2019 premiership, despite the departure in Jessica Roberts, West Brunswick are primed to make a move this season.
