ThewholeVAFAwasthrilledto fi nallygetthroughafull seasonin2022followingtheCovidforcedcancellationofour 2020seasonandprematureabandonmentof2021.
TheAGMhadbeenpostponedfromitsoriginaldateof December6,2021toMarch21,2022duetothetragicpassing ofBoardcandidateSteveLaussen.Asaresultofelections atthatAGMandseveralsubsequentBoardresignationsand newappointments,anewBoardwasputinplace.
ItisimportanttorecognizethecontributionstotheVAFAof severalformerlongstandingBoardMemberswhodeparted during2022.MickOvermanservedtheVAFAastreasurer forseveralyearsandasPresidentfromDecember6,2021 toFebruary14,2022.Mick’sworkasTreasurerduringCovid wasoutstanding.DeanMatthewsservedastheChairof ourFootballSubcommitteeandPetaOliveastheChairof ourGovernanceSubcommittee.WethankthemandCheryl Cartwrightfortheire fforts.Iwouldalsoliketonotethe passingofthemuch-lovedVAFALifeMemberandHonorary historianMrJohnBell,andalsoofMrMaxLyon.Bothmade invaluablecontributionstoourAssociation.
TherefreshedBoardsettoworkonthestrategicdirection andimplementationofourcompetitiononreturnfromCovid. Directorshadafocusofvisitingallclubsonmatchdayssoas togain fi rst-handunderstandingofthechallengesfacedby ourstakeholders.TheVAFA‘sFootballSub-Committeeunder Chair,Vice-PresidentFrankDunell,andDirectorincharge ofWomen‘sFootballVickiDurston,togetherwiththeVAFA Adminteam,hadeverythinginplaceforanon-timestartto the2022season.
Ourclubsandplayers,umpiresandvolunteersfromall sectionswerereadyforthe fi rstbounceoftheyear.Itwas greattobebackalthoughsince2020,theimpactofCOVIDhas seenourregistrationnumbersplateauacrossourwomen’s andmen’scompetitions.Indeed,oneofthekeyplatformsof ourstrategicplanistheaimforthecompetitiontoreturnto growthinparticipationnumbersin2023andbeyond.
Thisyeartherewereinexcessof100VAFAwomen’splayers onVFLWlistsand156malesonVFLlistswhichisatestament tothegreatstridesandrecognitionofthestandardofour players.
Umpiresisanareawhichisofgreatimportance.Ourstrategic planaimstokeepdevelopingandencouragingmoreumpire participation,especiallywomen,beitasa fi eld,boundary orgoalumpire.TheVAFAispursuingopportunitiestobuild astate-of-the-artcomplexatElsternwickParkspeci fi cally forourumpireswithfemale-friendlyfacilitiesandspectator amenitiestoencouragetherecruitment,retention, development,andenjoymentoffemaleandmaleumpires.
Indeed,inMay,theVAFAwassuccessfulinsecuringfunding of$1millionfromtheStateGovernmentfornewlightingand spectatoramenitiesatElsternwickParkandthesewillbe implementedassoonaspossible.
ThisyearwetrialledplayingthePremierCMen’sGrand FinalontheFriday23rdSeptemberpublicholiday.Theclash betweenMonashBluesandOldGeelongwasamagni fi cent spectacleplayedinfrontofabumpercrowdandoptimising thispublicholidayiscertainlyontheradarinfuture fi xture planning.
FromaBoardupdate,ourTreasurerMr.TimHabelandthe Financeteamhavebroughtanoutstanding fi nancialresultby implementingourbudgetandreturnedtheVAFAtoamodest 2022profi t.WearetonightpresentinganewAffi liationFee modelforrati fi cationwhichifpassed,willresultinlower costsandfeesformostclubs.AllRegulatorydocumentation hasalsobeenbroughtuptodate.
TheGovernanceSub-CommitteeunderBoardmembers FelicityFrederico,VickiDurstonandSarahDelbosctogether withNewConstitutionprojectcoordinatorPhilStevens,our variousstakeholdersandourlegalexpertshavestrenuously

The“old”constitutionhasservedtheAssociationbrilliantly since1961andIwouldliketoacknowledgetheworkdoneon thatoriginaldocumentbyitskeywriterVAFALifeMember andformerPatronMrJohnDillon.
AnewBoardcharteranddirector’scodeofconducthas beenimplementedandmanyoftheVAFAPolicieshavebeen updated.
ThenewVAFAStrategicPlanledbyBoardmemberOliver Gilberthasalsobeenrati fi edwiththestrategicdirection, roadmapandplansforthenext4years.Aspartofthis direction,itisourintentiontoincorporatethelandmarkState GovernmentFairAccessPolicyRoadmapintheseplansto ensurethattheVAFAwillalwaysprovideenvironmentsthat arewelcoming,accessible,andinclusiveforeveryone.

OurCommercialTeamalsoundertookanexhaustivetender processfortheon-fi eldapparelwiththeresultthatourclubs willnowhavefourqualitysupplierstoselectfromfortheir merchandise.

FormerCEOMr.BrettConnellledtheVAFAforthelast5 yearsuptoApril2022andhewasatthehelmastheVAFA negotiatedourwaythroughamostdi ffi cult2-yearCovid period.Bretthadgivengreatserviceandleadershiptothe VAFA.Wethankhimforhise ffortsandweallwishhimwellin hisfuturecareer.
ShonaMcInnes fi nishedupherVAFAtenureinSeptember 2022andisacknowledgedforheroutstandingcontribution inhelpingsetuptheVAFAWomen’sFootballcompetition in2017,whichwasrecognisedbybeingtherecipientofa prestigiousAustralia-wideawardbytheAFL.WewishShona wellinherfutureendeavours.
TheGMofFootballOperationsSamConfaithadalsogiven greatservicetotheVAFAanddepartedtotakeuparolewith AFLVictoriaasdidtheformerVAFA’sUmpire’sDirectorof coachingRussellDavidson.
IalsowishtothankMr.PeterGrantwhoservedasInterimCEO for3monthsthisyearforhiseffortsduringamostdi ffi cult period,andalsothoseofGMCommercialandMediaMr.Glen TowerswhenhesteppedupasSeniorManagerInCharge.
InMay,theboardappointedMr.JasonReddickintotherole ofVAFACEO.Jasonhasmadeanimmediateandpositive impactatalllevels.WethankJasonforhistirelesswork, andastutemulti-skillswhichhehasbroughttotheVAFAthis yearandintothefuture.Weallalsorecognisethee ffortsof allourVAFAstaff fortheirdiligenceandextraordinarye fforts duringtheyear.

HavingcommencedmyCEOdutiesinlateJune2022,Ihave agreatappreciationforthecommitmentlevelsthatBear andPeterclearlyinvestedtoe ffectivelymanagethelargest seniorfootballcompetitionofanycodeinthecountry.

1.FinalsFootball
Thehighlightoftheyearwasundoubtedlyseeingthe completionofthe fi rstVAFA fi nalsseriessince2019.The VAFA fi nalsinvolved145gamesplayedacross19venuesand wereattendedby53,000spectators.Congratulationsare extendedagaintoalltheparticipatingandsuccessfulteams, especiallyStKevin’sFCledbyPresidentPatrickMount, whoachievedthePremierMen’sandWomen’spremiership double.
Ialsowishtoacknowledgetheenormousworkperformedby ourFootballOperationsteaminMattCollister,WillThomas andRebeccaCarterinco-ordinatingandmanagingsucha successfulseriesofgames.
Aspecialmentiontoo,tothePresidentsofOldXaverians,Old Scotch,OldBrighton,Mazenod,OldGeelong,MonashBlues andHamptonRovers,whoeitherworkedcollaboratively,or wereverysupportiveoftheVAFA,insecuringalternate fi nals venuesfortheirteam’smatchesduetothereducedoptions in2022.Itwasimpressivetoseethemputasideself-interest andfocusonworkingtogetherfora‘greatergood’outcome.
2.MediaCoverage
Throughthee ffortsofGMCommercialandMediaGlen TowersandMediaManagerCameronVoss,weengaged bothMySportLiveandNewsCorp(KommunityTV)todeliver anunprecedentednumberoflivestreamedVAFAmatches throughouttheseasonand fi nalscampaign.Thisresultedin 155,976livestreamviewsandithasbeenheart-warmingto hearthenumerousstoriesofsupporterswhowereinterstate/ overseasorinillhealthathome,thrilledattheopportunityto watchtheirVAFAteamsinaction.
JoeyPignataroledateamofdedicatedvolunteerswho continuedtodeliverahighlyprofessionalbroadcasting serviceforalltheVAFAgames.Wearefortunatetohavesuch passionatedevoteesworkingforourAssociation.
3.Events
IanCordnerandhisworkinggrouporchestratedagreatBig VlunchatthetraditionalRACVClubvenuewhichwasvery wellattendedbypastBigVrepresentativesfromacrossthe decades.TheBigVlunchisnotexclusivetopastparticipants only,soIwouldhighlyrecommendtoallourVAFAcommunity tobookintonextyear’sBigVeventandexperienceaterri fi c showcaseoftheVAFAspirit.
TheannualWilliamBuckFinalsLunchwasanotherwonderful eventheldattheuniquePlazaBallroomwhereGarryLyon andNathanBuckley,togetherwiththeVAFAPremierMen’s andPremierBMen’scoaches,entertainedthe240-strong crowdwithpreviewsandinsightsintoboththeVAFAandAFL fi nalsgamesahead.
GrandFinalLuncheswereheldonmatchdaypriortothe PremierWomen’s(ElsternwickPark)andPremierMen’s(Trevor BarkerOvalSandringham)games.Iwanttoacknowledge thegreatsupportandpatronageoftheseeventsprovided bythecompetingClubsandtheirsupporters,itmakesthese

Finally,theVAFAAwardsnightmarkedtheculminationof the2022season,anditwaswonderfultoseerepresentatives fromallbutoneortwoVAFAClubsinthe400-strongcrowd attheSofi teltocelebratetheworthyindividualawardwinners ineachdivision.Thiseventproducedanimpressivedisplay ofthevastsizeandconnectionofourVAFAcommunity.I’m expectingwecangetto100%Clubrepresentationin2023. SpecialmentionofSusanMillerwho,togetherwithcontractor LeighMooney,didapowerofworktodeliverthesehugely successfulmajoreventsinsuchatighttimeframe.
CHALLENGES
1.Clubs
Thereisnodoubtthatdespitethecompletionofafullseason, thatmanyclubsenduredsigni fi cantchallengeswithlackof players,astrainonareducedvolunteerbase,insu ffi cient offi cialumpirenumbers,andgamesmissedthroughforfeits and/orbyescausedbyanunevennumberofteams.It’s noconsolationthatthereductioninparticipation,umpires andvolunteersisare flectionoftraitsexperiencedinall communitysportacrossAustralia.
TheVAFAisacutelyawareofthisandourCommunityand ClubManager,SeanWalker,UmpireManagerStephen Privitera,andUmpireAssociationPresidentBenMcWiggan, areworkingcloselywithAFLVictoriatoproduceanumberof newinitiativestoaddresstheseparticularconcerns.
Similarly,MattCollisterisworkingcloselywithanumberof VAFAclubstodeterminetheircapacityto fi eldteamseach weekin2023,andensuringwehaveanevennumberof teamsineachdivisionwhereverpossible.
2.VAFA
Wehadourownsigni fi cantchallengesduringtheyear,none lessthantheplayerpointsenforcement,themediapublicity aroundavili fi cationcase,andtheabysmalconditionof ElsternwickParkforthePremierBMen’sGrandFinal.
Themostimportantthingtocomefromeachoftheseissues wasthelearningsthatwehaveandstepswearetakingto ensurethereisnorepeat.TheVAFAFootballSub-Committee isinvestigatingfurtherresourcestomanagethePlayer Pointssystemfrom2023andtaketheonusawayfromClubs. WehaveprovidedtheAFLwithfeedbackfromallparties involvedinthepublicizedvili fi cationcaseaswellasthatof otherinterestedVAFAcommunitymembers,recommending policychangesandrequestingfurtherresourcestomanage theprocessoffutureclaimsinatimelymanner.Wehavehad severalmeetingswiththeBaysideCityCounciltodetermine thecauseoftheunprecedentedmuddygroundconditions thatoccurred.Wehaveobtainedconfi rmationofCouncil’s commitmenttoincreasetheiryear-roundinvestment inmaintainingthesurfacetoalevelbefi ttingthetier1 classi fi cationofthevenue.

Asigni fi cantconsultationapproachhasbeenundertakenin engagingallClubsandstakeholdersinthedevelopmentof theVAFA’snewStrategicPlan.Weexperiencedaveryhigh responserate,re flectingapassionateVAFAcommunity,and weareexcitedtoreleasethefour-yearPlanatthe2022AGM.

Throughoutthesediscussionsmanykeythemesconsistently cametothesurfacewithvolunteernumbersandthe recruitmentofnewvolunteersaconcernatnearlyevery club.Clubsalsoconsistentlyexpressedthechallengesof unpredictableplayernumberswiththereturnoftravel, increasedUniversitybreaksandthedesiretospendmoretime withfamilypostCOVIDallkeycontributorstothechallenge of fi eldingteam’sweekinandweekout.Otherkeythemes includethechallengesurroundingplayerwelfareincluding addressingmentalhealth,thechallengeofawkward fi xtures withuneventeamnumbersinsomesections,theprovisionof aninclusiveenvironment,thenumberofumpirestheVAFA canprovideandthecurrenta ffi liationfeemodel.
InFebruarytheVAFAworkedwithAFLVictoriatodeliver subsidisedtrainingofLevel1Sportstrainersthrougha partnershipwithSportsMedicineAustralia.AcrossallVAFA clubs,30trainerstookuptheofferoftrainingwhichwas100% subsidisedaspartoftheprogram.TheVAFAdevelopeda workingpartnershipwithAFLVictoriaonthisprogramafter keyfeedbackin2021thatthebarrierofcostwasahindrance to fi ndingnewSportsTrainers.
In2022theVAFAengageditscoachesinavarietyof ProfessionalDevelopmentopportunitiesincludingthe Women’sCoachingAcademy,whichsaw8womenfromVAFA clubsengageinworkshops,observation,anddiscussionwith theguidanceofLaurenMorecroftandNatalieWood.The purposeoftheWomen’sCoachingAcademywastoincrease theprofessionalknowledgeofparticipants,connectlikemindedcoachesandsupportmemberstofurthertheirskill setthroughsubsidisedaccreditation,whilesupportingthe recruitmentandretentionofwomencoachingintheVAFA. A69%retentionratewasachievedin2022,upfrom60%in 2021.Therecruitmentandretentionofumpiresremainsone ofthehighestprioritiesfortheVAFAmovingintothe2023 seasonandbeyond.Thelong-termobjectiveheldbythe UmpiringDepartmentistoprovideeveryteamwithatleast oneleagueappointedumpirepergame.Wethankallclubs whodidanexceptionaljobinorganisingclubumpiresto offi ciateunappointedgames.
