A SEASON TO REMEMBER Thank you for purchasing the first ever full colour A4 commemorative Grand Final edition of the Amateur Footballer. Each week this program provides detailed information and we thought it was time to up the ante and provide 40 colour pages that might one day become a collector’s item. A fantastic VAFA season will culminate this weekend with the three Premier Sections and Division 3 Grand Finals. All promotion and relegations have been decided and some thrilling Grand Finals have been played and won. Congratulations to the following clubs on winning promotion: University Blacks and Beaumaris (Premier), Parkdale Vultures and Fitzroy (Premier B), North Old Boys / St Pats and Peninsula (Premier C), Bulleen Templestowe and Prahran Assumption (Division 1), Ivanhoe and Yarra Valley (Division 2) and Sth Mornington and Swinburne University (Division 3). Of the twelve promoted clubs, five of these will be playing in their highest VAFA section with Beaumaris being the first solely district club to play in Premier since Ormond in 1996. It is a huge year for Beaumaris who are also celebrating their 50th year as a club. Collegians and Old Xaverians have held the top 2 positions on the ladder for the majority of the season and are deserved Grand Finalists. The Old Xavs record since 1995 is incredible winning 11 premierships and being runners up twice. Collegians are defending their title of 2011 and are playing in their fourth grand final in the past five seasons. This is their second ever grand final meeting between Collegians and Old Xaverians, the first encounter was in 2010 when Old Xaverians triumphed by 20 points. It all points to a great finale to the season. Seven senior sections with reserves, an expanding thirds and a vibrant Club XVIII competition gives all senior players an opportunity to play amateur football commensurate with their level of skill or time commitments. Add to this the five Under 19 sections and an Under 18 competition and all needs are met by the VAFA. Over 12,000 registered players feast on the opportunities provided both on and off the ground. Along with providing our players with 125
matches each weekend our elite players are rewarded with representing the association when donning the Big V. Our seniors had two outstanding victories against the Eastern Football league and AFL Sydney in 2012. This, along with our victory against the VCFL in 2011, confirms the VAFA as the premier community football competition in the country. Our Under 23’s were successful in defeating Western Australia in the AAFC match. Premier C – Division 4 and Under 19’s were unfortunately defeated by the EFL and VCFL respectively. Our Under 18’s head to Wellington in two weeks to play the New Zealand Under 20’s and we wish Tom Maule (2011 Junior Coach of the Year) good luck as they endeavour to bring home the Trans Tasman trophy. On the back of his outstanding AAFC carnival in 2011, Sam Dunell was drafted as a rookie listed player and was promoted to the senior list to debut for St Kilda against Sydney. He joined 2010 Club Warehouse Rising Star Dan Nicholson as our most recent players to be drafted to the AFL. The coaches and commitment from the support staff in representative football speaks volumes for our competition. To have all of these people give of their busy time so generously should be recognised by all. Simon Lethlean, Dean Matthews, Ben Robertson and Owen Lalor were outstanding ambassadors for the VAFA. It was a huge effort and one which we should all be proud. The captain of our senior Victorian team against the EFL, Cam Howat won the Woodrow Medal for best and fairest player in the Premier Section. He was a deserving winner as he has been an outstanding contributor to the VAFA since returning to Old Carey from Richmond in 2009. Congratulations to all other best and fairest winners for the season. In 2012 the VAFA formed partnerships with VFL stand alone clubs Collingwood and Essendon to provide players for their teams as these sides do not have reserve teams in the VFL. This pathway program was put in place to provide opportunities for our players to potentially make the next step into an AFL career. Matt Boland (Parkdale Vultures), Jack Hellier and Dan Garside (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) and Tom Humphrey
(De La Salle) were the first recipients of places in this program. There have been many highlights during the year for both club and individuals. Chadstone’s first win in four years; the hundred goals by Ash Close of Ivanhoe, including a patch of 55 in 6 games and also a dozen so far in finals; Parkdale Vultures and Prahran Assumption’s double jump; Adem Yze kicking five goals in the last quarter to snatch victory against the luckless Old Trinity; and the 282 Premier matches on Dartfish. Final highlights include the Collegians after the siren goal in the U19 Section 3 Grand Final; 19 second half goals to Yarra Valley in the Div 3 Preliminary Final; the drawn final and extra time between Old Geelong and Whitefriars; the Old Xavs Crocodiles winning their 17th flag since the VAFA took over the clubbies in 1986; and Karey Taylor from Old Geelong U19’s kicking 5 second quarter goals in their win against Williamstown. Administratively the VAFA were the first to bring in new initiatives such as live scores and electronic reporting for umpires. Whilst these may have experienced some hiccups throughout the year we were daring enough to pioneer these. Next year I am confident they will be even more user friendly. In 2012 we saw the introduction of a weekly VAFA TV show as Andrew Leonard went out to a different club every Thursday night to try to share the experience of that club with the rest of the competition. VAFA TV also unearthed the VAFA TV Strongman competition and congratulations must go to Stefan Davis of Mazenod for his 160kg lift in the final. We should all be proud of umpires who are well led by Brian Goodman and coach Tony Hales. Right through the sections the standards set are very high and from my view they don’t seem to over officiate the games. It will be a tough job picking the best three for the Premier Grand Final as there is an ever widening number to choose from. Let’s sit back now and enjoy a great weekend of amateur football. Eleven premierships still up for grabs in what will be a fitting finale to a wonderful season.

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012

DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES Never write off Old Xaverians! What a comeback and what a win, but how many of us are surprised? The countless hoards of people who kept saying that with Old Xavs its different and they always find a way were correct. The comeback win against De La Salle in the Preliminary Final by 14 points is just one more game that will go down in Xaverian folklore as another September special at Elsternwick Park. De La Salle jumped out of the gates in impressive fashion with four goals inside the first 15 minutes of the game. The blue and gold’s small fleet of runners were zipping the ball back and forth and then forward with pace and accuracy. The delivery to Brett Eddy in particular, was simply breathtaking at times. More importantly Eddy was converting his chances. Eddy had another chance to start the second term and De La were all of a sudden out to a five-goal lead. Michael Darvell converted an opportunity for Xavs that reduced the margin back to four goals, but in general play it was still all De La Salle. Tyson Hunt copped an accidental bump in the contest from Pat Ambrose that saw him spill some claret over the surface of Sportscover Arena. The margin at that point was four goals and Brendan Goss had a chance to reduce that margin with a minute to go in the half but missed a shot from 20m out on an angle. As good as De La Salle were to half time, they still hadn’t put Xavs away. The margin at the long break was 25 points and whilst not insurmountable there reality was that something dramatic would need to change for Old Xavs. Where this would come from was uncertain as Old Xavs in recent weeks have not been as clinical in their ball movement forward of centre as we have come to expect. After half time Old Xavs came out firing but that still couldn’t stop De La kicking the first of the term. Xavs did kick the next two to cut the margin to 20 points before Eddy got on the end of another one to kick his fifth goal of the game. A beautiful Josh Agius pass set Goss up for his third to bring the margin back again but the problem was that Xavs hadn’t made any inroads to the De La Salle lead. In fact at three quarter time, the lead had crept up by one to a 26 point margin. Eddy could have had six before three quarter time but a miss took his tally to 5.3 with a quarter to play and the game was De La’s to lose.
VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012
Old Xavs needed to call on their heroics of the 2010 Preliminary Final to pull back this margin. They got the first goal of the term and the pressure they applied around the ground was huge. However as quick as a flash Eddy was lining up for his sixth, but missed to leave the margin at 21. There was more drama as the stretcher was brought out for Andy Biddlecombe who hit the ground from a marking contest and was knocked out. At the resumption Old Xavs kicked a goal to bring it back to 15 points.
Nick Wynne will likely get the job on Nick Ries, with the Collegians skipper a key player in their semi-final win. Wynne is equally important for the run of Old Xavs out of the backline and if he can nullify Ries and get into space to create some drive for Xavs then that will be a win for them. The problem of course is that everything Ries touches generally turns to goal-d. He only needs the ball a handful of times to make something happen. The ruck battle between John Shaw and Cam Purss and most likely Barclay Dixon and James Jorgenson will be crucial to the outcome. First use of the football to Ball, Agius and Darvell or to Stachan, Bull and Scott will allow the side winning the clearances to immediately apply pressure to the opposition defensive units.
In quick succession a goal to Jake Williams brought it back to 9 points and the recalled Esmonde Prowse who was hugely influential in the final quarter - as was Nick Wynne - reduced the margin to three. The names Agius, Ball and Darvell were all keys to the revival as the crowd watched on in disbelief at a side who had managed just six goals to three quarter time and no more than nine goals in each of their previous four weeks were able to kick eight goals to one to win by a comfortable 14 points.
Another key matchup is Nick Sautner and Tom Carey or possibly Andy Biddlecombe. Biddlecombe will have to get up from his injury last week to play so Carey will be vital as the man to mark Sautner. Sautner got away from Old Xavs two weeks ago and as well as kicking goals, he was a key antagonist throughout.
Grand Final Preview – Collegians v Old Xaverians
There are many other matchups that matter, and we are unlikely to see any hard tags on the key midfielders of both sides so it should be a shootout in the centre. Unfortunately it is unlikely to mean a shootout on the scoreboard and expect it to be a tight low-scoring contest.
Form, past results and a week of rest get thrown out the window for Sunday’s Grand Final. Whilst Collegians would be thrilled that last week’s Preliminary Final went down to the wire, they would be equally concerned that Old Xaverians have found their mojo again. The Collegians structure and run off half back has troubled Old Xaverians in the past two encounters but Old Xavs finally got some of their own run back in the final quarter last week. For spectators this is an exciting prospect, running football off half back is exciting to watch and with Sautner at one end and Handley or Lynch at the other we should be in for a beauty.
Where does it leave us? Collegians have been supreme this year and should start as favourites, Old Xavs have the belief and momentum that a comeback win like last week can provide. I favour Collegians to go back-to-back winning this one by 12 points. The Jock Nelson Medal to go to Lachlan Fergusson.
There will be key players for both sides and it is worth looking at a couple of those potential match-ups to see who wins those vital contests. Pat Ambrose and Charlie Holst will be a key factor in how Old Xaverians go across half forward. Holst won the plaudits of his coaching panel for his last two displays, but Ambrose was equally impressive. His combative attack on the pack is crucial for Goss and Williams to be able to rove and Holst seems to direct his spoiling into the laps of Tardiff and Zimbachs to run a clear.

COLLEGIANS THE STORY SO FAR IN 2012 Collegians entered the 2012 season as reigning premiers after finally redeeming their 2010 Grand Final loss by triumphing on the last day of the season in 2011 against St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers. At the start of the season Collegians had so much up side as they still had a host of Under 19 talent to introduce to the team from the recent Wesley College APS premiership team plus they also recruited the reigning Zachariah Medal winner Cameron Lee from promoted Premier C side Werribee Districts. So if things were looking up for Collegians you might not of known as the opening weeks of the season were about securing the four points. In Round 1 they recorded a win away to Uni Blues by 15 points and only eight points separated them from De La Salle in round 2 when they unfurled the Premiership Flag at Harry Trott. Perhaps the there was a new game plan or perhaps there was a strategy of only doing the necessary things in order to secure the win. No premierships are won in May. Mind you they kept winning over the coming weeks, defeating Old Trinity by 22 points, St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 55 points, Old Scotch by 39 points at Sportscover Arena before just holding off Old Carey by a point out at Dunshea Oval. The following week they comfortably defeated St Bernards by 50 points and there
was talk amongst some circles of a potential undefeated season. Old Xaverians were up next at Harry Trott, with the visitors kicking seven goals to one in the second term and the only goal of a second half that never reached any great heights, Collegians had had their first setback of 2012. The trip to Waverley Park the next week saw them drop two games in a row as they fell nine points short of De La Salle. Two losses to their closest rivals for the flag signaled to the rest of the competition that the Lions were vulnerable.
was cards on the table time and Collegians demonstrated their premiership credentials with a come from behind win against Xavs. Down 28 points to zero at the 20 minute mark of the first quarter, Collegians kicked 15 goals to five to run out comfortable 38 point winners. They go into this grand final well placed to win back-back Premier premierships for the first time since 1992-3.
That merely signaled a re-set for the club as they commenced he back nine with straightforward wins against Old Scotch at Sportscover, Uni Blue at home, Old Trinity away and Caulfield Grammarians at home. Most observers would suggest that whilst these wins were good wins, the side hadn’t clicked yet. The game against Old Carey was crucial, Carey were playing for a spot in the four and at the Trott the men in purple found their groove. A final quarter blast of 5 goals to zip blew St Bernards away at the Snakepit and they improved on that against St Bedes/Mentone Tigers when Collegians found irresistible form to pile on 10.6 to one goal in the final quarter. The final round game against Old Xaverians was a 10 point win at Toorak Park with cards held close to the chest. The following week
OLD XAVERIANS ROAD TO THE PREMIERSHIP Old Xavs seem to perennially start amongst the flag favourites these days and at the start of 2012 it was no different. A preliminary final loss that they were expected to win was a bitter pill for the red and blacks to swallow at the end of 2011. The opening games of 2012 did nothing to dismantle the expectations of the Xaverian faithful with a comprehensive win over Old Trinity away in round one and solid three goal win at 2011 finalist Uni Blues in round two. Old Xavs have many rivals and many sides that ‘get-up’ for the games against them. That’s what happens when you have a successful run such as the one they have had over the past two decades. Old Scotch are one of those sides and they were up and rolling for the round three clash at Camberwell Sports Ground consigning Xavs to a 46 point loss. The coming rounds were about securing the four points which Old Xavs did with wins against Old Carey at Sportscover Arena, St Bernards at Toorak Park, and winning the tough away trip to St Bedes/Mentone Tigers by 32 points. Xavs backed this up with a win over Caulfield and then faced a challenging two weeks to come out unscathed securing wins against premiership challengers De La Salle and Collegians. The win against Collegians was in wet conditions at Harry Trott where both sides
managed a goal between them in the second half. The return bout against Old Scotch saw Xavs go back to school as they played on the Xavier College playing fields and had a 40 point win. St Bernards were the next victim but only after a last quarter battle that was filled with highlights and Xavs held on to win by seven points. They hosted St Bedes/Mentone Tigers for a win then hosted Old Carey at Sportscover in the mud to win in with three goals to two. Mud would be a recurring theme for Xavs over the coming rounds. Old Trinity was the next opponent and the OTs pushed all day but couldn’t overcome Xavs at Toorak Park.
best. Old Xavs had dropped three in a row to De La Salle and Collegians twice. Their dominant best wasn’t far away and in quarter number 16 of that run, something changed. The run and carry and quick ball movement was back. Old Xavs did what they do best and won a final from no where to make it through to play Collegians for the chance to be name the best team in Amateur footy.
With 11 wins on the trot, a let down was coming, it happened at University Oval in the mud against Uni Blues as the desperate Blues secured an upset to help ease their relegation fears. Caulfield almost pulled off a bigger upset a week later in atrocious conditions at Toorak Park, but Xavs held on to win by two points. The muddy weeks must have taken it out of Old Xavs as their next 14 of their next 15 quarters would struggle to be remembered by even the staunchest fans of the black and red. The exception was the first quarter of the second semi against Collegians when Xavs kicked 4.4 and looked back to their dominant 5

DEADLY SHARKS, BLACK PYTHONS No doubt the finals series has delivered the two best sides into today’s Premiership duel. University Blacks with sixteen wins and two losses had a stellar year to finish minor Premiers. Beaumaris tied on points with St Kevins after thirteenand-five, but powered through the semi and preliminary finals to secure a muchdeserved grand final berth and promotion. Blacks have been almost unassuming this year; methodically mowing through the competition. They haven’t exactly hid their light under a bushel, but their quiet acquittal helped keep a fairly low profile through the season. Well that was until they demolished St Kevins in the second semi by 11 goals. They may as well have stripped naked in a prosh week prank, yelling Monty Python insults from their lofty spires: I Blow My Nose at You, You B-Grade Poseurs! The lid is off and the cover blown as they relish their proud return to Premier. Beaumaris is the first District club since Ormond to earn elevation to the Premier ranks, and to do so in the midst of the club’s 50th anniversary is a huge motivator. Just one more shiny milestone remains, and while the B-grade silverware may not hold its gloss amongst the Premier elite (to wit Caulfield’s imminent return) there is no doubt that we deliver the two most worthy teams unto the upper echelons and we wish them every success. PRELIMINARY FINAL The Sharks had two changes, including Scott “We’ll go ridin’ on the horses” Braithwaite and four Skob changes saw Edgar and Simpson return to the lineup. Beauy hit the ground running, kicking the first three unanswered. More than four goals up at quarter time, the Sharks had all their usual suspects firing plus a few PBs from others. Sam McBain (4) had a brilliant game, as did Wilba Murton who was electric from the first bounce. Sean Coote and Matt Duggan were solid as you’d expect, just as St Kevins weren’t without their stars in Ben Dowd particularly, who worked incredibly hard, along with Shanahan and Chivers who concocted opportunities when they could, reducing the margin to 14 points at the main break. Beauy dominated the third, kicking seven goals to three to pretty much seal the game. St Kevin’s poor disposal saw them struggle to convert despite their persistence. They got within VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012
There’s so much to admire about Blacks; their surging pressure on the ball, deep forward options and bigger bodies that can strangle opposition. Beaumaris have a running style to counteract this however, and if able to apply scoreboard pressure early will have their tails up. They have some beautifully skilled players and a whopping slice of x-factor brilliantly harnessed by Jason Mifsud over the past five years. They go in underdogs, but with street smarts and a big bite. Matt Kempton’s Blackers have the credentials, talent and burning desire to constrict their opponents with great force. We’ll see it all today in a fantastic contest, Blacks for mine by ten points.
26 points from two quick goals early in the final term but Beauy locked them down to salute in the end by 29 points. ST KEVINS Daniel Harford steered his charges through an undefeated front nine (until they met the Blacks), and struggled with form through the back half. Gutted to have missed again, but SKOBs will be preparing already for their 2013 tilt. Handwringing is for little old ladies. GRAND FINAL No doubt the week off has been a bonus for Black’s players racing the clock to come up in time. Beaumaris may have a troublesome ankle and hammy giving them grief too, and they’ll be generally more stiff and sore anyway with the extra game’s pounding. Some may argue the uninterrupted run into the Big Dance keeps their touch up, the week’s rest sometimes a curse.
Thank you to a wonderful group of club volunteers for their invaluable contributions over the season: Peter, Peter, Neil, Andrew, Ron and Paul. Next year we welcome Caulfield and Trinity into Premier B, along with Parky and the Roy Boys. Enjoy your off-season.
Here’s how they shaped up against each other through the season: Round 8 at University Oval: Beaumaris 10.10.70 def Uni Blacks 10.8.68 As the large crowd filed in for scones with clotted cream, Uni Blacks went into the sheds seven points to the good. Black’s captain Dan Costello and Beauy x-factor Tom Dean both missed with injury, but it was the sickening lower leg crunch to Jackson Leigh in the third that seemed to galvanize Gower (5) and Cathcart (2) shooting the Sharks into the lead. The Sharks repelled repeated Uni advances in a heart-stopping final few minutes to win by two points. Round 15 at Banksia Reserve: Uni Blacks 13.10.88 def Beaumaris 6.15.51 Stalwart Shark defender Mark ‘Dougie’ Ensor was recalled to the senior lineup but his side struggled against the miserly Black backline. Wasteful in front of goal and a shocker second term sealed Beauy’s fate as the Uni boys dictated terms: Jordy Foster (3) and Harrie Lahy were shining lights in a beautifully balanced effort, running out 37-point winners.

UNI BLACKS ROAD TO THE GRAND FINAL The Uni Blacks’ season kicked off with a special Sunday match at Warrawee Park in Oakleigh against the determined Krushers. With the name of the oval being an aboriginal word meaning ‘stop here’ or ‘place of rest’, it seemed initially that the boys from the Uni had taken their pre-game study too seriously as they got off to a very sluggish start. Fortunately, they were able to pull away and record a 29 point win to get their season moving. The first home game of the season saw our lads register a 59-point win over Old Melburnians. More importantly though, this match saw the origins of a social media storm that would rival a top-rating reality TV show and the Australian swimming team combined. After bagging 7 majors, VAFA Rising Star nominee Jandre Slabbert ensured that the #slab signing was attached to any cyber-musing. These initial victories were followed by wins over AJAX, Old Haileybury, Werribee, Old Brighton and Old Ivanhoe. This allowed our boys to be undefeated upon the first bye of the year. All of these matches were won with a fierce desire to win the ball and to follow the game plan implemented by new coach and former Blacks champion, Matt Kempton. As the season moved on into winter, it became clear to the players that their maximum effort was required no matter what conditions. In fact, many of his charges wondered how far below zero the mercury would have to drop before Kempo would say that it was anything other than a ‘cracking night’ for training. The first clash after the bye was an intense affair with our eventual Grand Final opponents, Beaumaris, travelling to the
Uni in a confident mood and with vocal support. This match was a classic and after being down by 11 points at the last change, the Sharks kicked the first 3 goals of the last stanza to establish a good lead, and although the Blacks could get one goal back, they couldn’t get another. As the final siren sounded, the visitors celebrated and the Blacks lamented their first loss of the season. Having now been displaced from top spot on the ladder, our boys had to travel to TH King to take on ladder-leader St Kevin’s. Given the tri-colours had beaten the Blacks twice the previous year, it was important to make a statement early. To say that the Uni achieved this, is to say that Jaimee Rogers only appears on your TV spasmodically. The half-time score read 7.9.51 to 1.0.6, and the Blacks chugged on to be back on the winners list. After a 99 point victory at home to Oakleigh, it seemed that the side were about to establish another winning run. Unfortunately, this streak only lasted the two games as Old Haileybury played the Blacks off the park at the Badlands. As is often the case in the VAFA, a reality check is never too far away. Three large wins against Werribee, Old Melburnians and AJAX entrenched the Blacks at the top of the table. Each of these victories appeared straightforward however all had their moments. The first match involved Coach Kempton imploring his players to ‘kick a golf score’, the second had Huw Lacey notching up his 100th Blacks game against his old club, and the third saw #slab bagging 10 majors.
The fixture decreed that another Beaumaris and SKOB double was upon us, and this time the club was determined to sweep the fixtures. Down at Shark Park, the Blacks were able to emerge victorious against an inaccurate home side. Given the location of the ground, and the comfortable margin late in the last quarter, I was keen to sneak away to beat the traffic. As I was driving out, darkness enveloped the ground. Quickly, I turned towards the wing and my eyes widened as I saw Adam Pitt genuflect on a pack of players. As he crashed to the ground and again allowed the afternoon sun to beam, the crowd acknowledged this stunning mark. Unfortunately, such a piece of athleticism was not possible the following week on the Uni Main. In a game devoid of both long kicking and blades of grass, the home side were able to register a 3 goal victory. I wish I could describe the match in greater detail, but my spectacles were covered in mud from about 3 minutes in. With two victories recorded from the remaining two games, the Blacks clinched the minor premiership and went into the 2nd Semi-Final with confidence. Having been in Premier A for only one season over the course of three decades and having not made a Grand Final since 2007, the rewards on offer against SKOB were tremendous. Pleasingly, our players were not overawed by this and put in a fierce performance, restricting their opponents to only one goal for the game. As the Box Hill wind and rain came and went, the Blacks fans celebrated their side’s promotion in style. Musings of The Black Hack
BEAUMARIS MAKING HISTORY From early on in season 2012 Beaumaris looked to be making history. There was a lot to celebrate; with the club hosting celebrations of its 50th year in a mid season function at Crown and a celebration day in the finals, all that was required was a solid season on the field so as not to dampen the festivities.
Beaumaris secured the points at Werribee Districts to make the turn for home as one of the big three of Premier B. More of the same in the second half of the season would see them play finals in Premier B for the first time.
Commencing the season with four straight wins had the Sharks in their highest ever placing in any amateur section they had played. The manner of the wins was emphatic as Old Ivanhoe and Oakleigh could attest to. Old Brighton put up a bit more resistance as did OM’s but a 4-0 start had Jason Mifsud and his coaching panel excited at what might be in 2012. .
They didn’t get the start they wanted when they dropped the first game of the second half of the year to Old Brighton away, but turned things around with a win at Oakleigh. They recorded an ever better win at home to the other Premier B pacesetter St Kevins. Old Ivanhoe was a formality before they ran into an Old Haileybury outfit that was now a bogey side for the Sharks, they lost to the Bloods for the second time in 2012.
The next two weeks would provide a reality check as the Sharks dropped games at home to Old Haileybury and St Kevins. The latter result by the smallest margin in football. The following week Beauy were back on the winners list after crushing AJAX by 98 points but the highlight of the front nine was a 2-point win away at one of the early pacesetters Uni Blacks.
Uni Blacks reversed the earlier season result against the Sharks at Banksia Reserve and a 3-3 start to the last nine had a few at the club huddled by that magnificent fireplace, wondering if they could capitalise on the start to the year. What followed was a series of wins to instill confidence and in the team and allowed the club to make a charge for the double chance. 9
Defeating Werribee and Old Melburnians set the balance back in the Sharks favour and holding on in a high scoring game against AJAX to win by 10 points in round 18 had the club dreaming about matches of grandeur in the weeks to come. The first semi final was tight all day with the lead changing multiple times until late goals allowed Beauy to progress against Old Melburnians. St Kevins had been humbled in their semi final and would a difficult prospect at Sportscover Arena but the Sharks came out of the gates with plenty of bite. The win through to the Grand Final was met with huge celebrations as Beaumaris would be in Premier Section for the first time in their history. It also saw them extend their winning streak to five matches – the longest of their season in 2012 and with a game to go, why wouldn’t they want to make it to six, to celebrate their 50th year in real style. ROYS BELT NODDERS, EARN A CHANCE AT REDEMPTION Many have tried, but only Whitefriars in 1998/99 and Uni Blacks in 2004/05 in the past fifteen years have been able to achieve what Parkdale sets out to do this week: win Division 1/Premier C back-to-back senior premierships. Standing in their way is a formidable Fitzroy unit, their confidence restored, following an emphatic win over Mazenod in the preliminary final. Both clubs enter Premier B in 2013 for the first time, which is a credit to everyone involved at Parkdale Vultures and Fitzroy. But you can be sure none of the senior players who take the field on Saturday will be satisfied and we are hoping for an epic clash between these two great sides. Fitzroy earned their ticket to the grand final on the back of a fantastic display against the Nodders. The game was tight throughout the first half and, as with most games of this magnitude it was the big guns who were standing up for both sides: Vansittart and Ablett in the red corner; Bourbon and Reed in the blue. Two late Roy goals gave them the ascendancy as the teams headed into the rooms and it shaped up to be a critical third quarter.
dismantled. The Roys haven’t managed to get ten goals against Parkdale in a game so far and, on current form, that’s not going to get them the victory. They did hit the scoreboard heavily against Mazenod, but this is another step up. It hasn’t really been a year for massive bags from the Roys forwards and it’s probably going to take Ablett, Angiolella, Cations or someone else to bob up with a bag of five or more.
in their snazzy new gold clash guernseys. These things look absolutely sensational and should be big sellers from the Roys store (of course, winning a premiership in them probably won’t hurt the sales figures). The Fitzroy contingent will be out in force and since Trevor Barker is only a few clicks away from Gerry Green, you can be sure that there will also be a lot of support for the Vultures. With Marcellin in the reserves and St Kevin’s in the unders, it should be a great crowd and a strong advertisement for Premier C football.
The other end was where the game was ripped away from Fitzroy last time, as their defence simply had no answer for Matt Boland and Lachlan Oakley. Boland has got off the chain both times he has lined up against Fitzroy and when you factor in Darren Rochford (61 goals this year) and Sam Larkins (averaging over four goals a game), it’s almost a case of picking your poison. As with their forward line, Fitzroy’s defence was sensational in the preliminary final, but they need to be outstanding again to contain this Parkdale side.
It would be a brave tipster to go against the Vultures, who look to be on a mission. On the other hand, if the Roys can get up in the curtain raisers, that could provide a tremendous motivation for the seniors to give Fitzroy one of the most memorable days in their rich history. They’ve got plenty of stars and they will leave it all on the ground. But it won’t be enough. Parkdale to win by four goals and David Robbins to be named best on ground.
With the similarity in colours between the two clubs, the Roys will be taking the field
There was only one team in it for the premiership term. Fitzroy dominated, with 6.3 to 0.1 to put the result beyond doubt. The few Nodder encroachments on the defensive 50m arc were quickly repelled by the stubborn Roy defence. Jack Simcoe and Sam Baker were standouts and Matt Brown was hitting the scoreboard. Cowan, Phibbs and the Chamberlains were doing their best to keep Mazenod in the contest, but they were unable to stop the onslaught. The game was effectively over before play resumed for the final quarter, but Fitzroy wasn’t done yet, extending the margin and setting things up beautifully for a rematch with the Vultures. Getting back to rare as rocking horse premiership feats in Premier C, St Bede’s/ Mentone is the only club in recent memory to sweep the under 19/reserve/senior premierships in a season, something Fitzroy will be attempting to do. The Vultures have already tasted their premiership success, with their under 19s raising the cup last week. Some of these baby Vultures might have to put their premiership celebrations on hold, as a few of them, Lewis Emmerson and Charlie Dillon in particular, probably deserve a long look from Sam Radford on the training track this week. In the three matches between the teams this year, the Vultures have done the job each time, with the most recent two clashes resulting in Fitzroy being

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012
Max McGraw
SEASON IN
THE SUN A few years back, late in the season, I had a conversation with one of the architects of the modern day VAFA, in which he rued the demise of community clubs. “The competition has gone past them,” he said. A couple of weeks later, there wasn’t a district club left above C Section. A year or two after that, I heard one very frustrated community club official advocating, of all things, a player draft, backing their call with claims they could no longer compete. Can you imagine that afternoon of entertainment? (Live of course, on Inner FM, with Ken Petrucco and Michael Crooks running down from number one pick right down to number two thousand.) That was then and this is now and oh my, how things have changed. Alumni clubs may still dominate the upper echelons of the VAFA, but already there are signs that, as Sam Cooke warned, a change is gonna come. Beaumaris is headed to Premier for the first time and hearty congratulations to them. The Sharks are the headline of the story of the second coming of community clubs. Their achievement is great reward for the planners and hardworkers who built patiently, overcome setbacks and finally made it. Best of luck to them, and they may soon be joined by others, with Werribee Districts consolidating in Premier B this season and Fitzroy and Parkdale Vultures about to join them.
Every season, of course, is about renewal and revival. University Blacks, which still somewhat cheekily touts itself as the biggest name in VAFA football, will return to the top tier next season, signalling a resumption of their Premier rivalry with their Varsity cousins, the Blues. The Melbourne University’s two tenants have never been at ease with one another, and while Blues have been the main attraction for some years, that may be about to change. Newcomers to the University’s residential colleges who have shown any kind of spark in country football can expect some heavy courting between now and March. The ending for St Kevin’s was again lamentable. They had an excellent season for most of the way, but playing in the mud on the Kingdome was perhaps not the best preparation for September. It was tipped out in straight sets yet again, which will no doubt throw up some questions. However, I expect coach Daniel Harford and the talented SKOB playing list to answer all those queries next campaign. Until late Sunday, I thought I’d be writing about the Xavs’ straight-set exit too, but another storied finish has punted them into yet another grand final, their 14th since 1995. One cannot explain the inexplicable, so why bother trying? They are simply a magnificent club that never admits defeat. Just when we started to believe that their dynasty was all done, they win another unimaginable victory and give themselves a chance to extend it. As one avid and delighted Xavs fan told me, “these things are never impossible, but sometimes do seem a bit improbable.” Or as another put it “Greatness is mysterious. No-one can ever truly know. Just glad to be along for the ride.” The rest of us will learn this weekend whether they really have rediscovered enough to topple a talented, in-form and courageous Collegians team. And what of De La Salle, dropping its fourth straight final in four years to the Red and Blacks? In their hearts, the La Sallians know they could have, and perhaps should have, won the last three. The Blue and Golds were sensing their time had come, and had been building

towards a big finals explosion. With their best team on the park last Sunday, a grand final berth was theirs for the taking. Now they must wait another year at least, testing the patience again of a rabid fandom that can still recall the club’s salad days. Premier football at its best is exciting and riveting to watch. It’s hard to believe how little time these young fellows have each week to hone their skills, while at the same time it’s amazing to see the commitment they make, purely for the love of the game. And if you’ve seen the finals thus far, you will know how much it all means to club supporters and to the energetic committeemen, whose blood, sweat and tears improve this competition every year. The “two-up, two down” system allows clubs to find their level in the VAFA, but it seems to me that some of the Premier clubs have inked long-term leases in the top section. The professionalism at Collegians, Xavs, De La Salle and St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers is such that is difficult to see them relinquish their spots. Old Carey too would appear to be just behind that solid pack and looking to greater things in the near future. The big improver was the dean of the section, Old Scotch, which has spent recent winters staving off relegation. This year, under co-coaches Dean Anderson and Stuey Powell, the Cardinals clicked and gave their fans a season to be savoured. Not quite good enough in the end, but not without claims on next year’s Adamson Cup. St Bernard’s, which reached the pinnacle a decade ago and was back this season for another crack, might well be a stayer too. Certainly, it’s going be tough to climb above any of these clubs in the short term and one needs only to look at their depth to understand why. Other stories of the season include the self-immolation of Old Ivanhoe, who never got on the track in Premier B. The Browns have been around the mark for a decade or more, playing Premier finals as recently as 2005, but they’ve slipped to Premier C after an entirely woeful campaign. What might have gone wrong has gone wrong at Chelsworth Park. With the resurgence of the community club up the hill, the borough named after Walter Scott’s famous Saxon knight may be now
be turning black, with Ivanhoe Amateurs in this week’s Div 3 dance. Last September saw five clubs win promotion for the second year running. This year, only Parkdale Vultures and Prahran Assumption won elevation again. The Four Blues came up short by two points in their grand final tilt in a classic against Bulleen Templestowe. The Bullants, after home ground troubles and a couple of indifferent campaigns, are on the rise again. Congratulations to South Mornington, which won its first VAFA title, to Point Cook, which played in its first finals’ series. Chadstone finally won a game after three years under its current name and the players even remembered the words to the club song. Or at least some of them did. That old power club North Old Boys came back with a flag and is now back into Premier C and Peninsula joins them, though the Pirates are still yet to secure a VAFA pennant and the Jolly Roger must fly for another year.
So the final weekend of the year is with us again. It seems an age ago that the VAFA’s best linked arms and came from behind to beat the EFL in the pre-season. Yet in other ways, this season has flown. In Saturday’s finales, Uni Blacks will run out a firm favourite, but Beaumaris has strong claims too. In Premier C, it’s Parkdale Vultures and Fitzroy, a good old suburban stoush for the title. On Sunday, Ivanhoe and Yarra Valley battle it out for Div 3 honours, while at Elsternwick, minor premier and second semi-final victor Collegians has a chance to go back-to-back. To do so, they must for the third time in a month beat Xavs, who will be looking to reverse the second semi-final result, as they did to claim premierships in 2000, 2003 and 2010. One couldn’t wish for a better finish to the season, though for so many, 2013 has already begun. And that’s just it. Seasons come and go, but Ammo Nation is with us twelve-months-a-year. And thankfully, every year.
Last Saturday, De La Salle won the Under 19 Premier pennant again, avenging their loss to Xavs in last year’s grand final, though I expect some of the gloss of that achievement will be washed away by the tears after Sunday’s defeat. 19

DIVISION 3
BATTLE BORN Somewhere outside that finish line, I square up and break through the chains, I head like a raging bull anointed by the blood, I take the reins, I come from the core of the flag that bears the name “Battle Born”. They call me the contender, I listen for the bell, my face flashing crimson from the fires of hell. What are you afraid of? And what are you made of? Flesh and Bone. Emblazoned across the Nevada State Flag are the words “Battle Born”. Nevada is known as the Battle Born State because it achieved statehood in 1864, during the Civil War. This week we will find out which of the Division 3 heavy weights, Ivanhoe or Yarra Valley, will win the right to call themselves “Battle Born”. A fantastic contest looms as Yarra Valley booked their ticket, in the most comprehensive way possible. A disappointing half of footy and that’s curtains for UHS-VU, after such a strong finals campaign. They took it right up to the Bushrangers early as well. At half time it was clearly anyone’s game. Alas all credit to the mighty Yarra Valley. After a shock loss last week a lot of soul searching was needed, as a few may have been questioning their ability on the big stage. However what they did Sunday proved they could not only perform, but also dominate the stage. Evidently it was a game of two halves, a brilliant start was always on the cards, but somewhat unexpectedly Uni had most of the play. Their midfield was gelling and it seemed that the loss last week had bruised more then a few Yarra Valley bodies, perhaps egos as well. I say unexpectedly because the last time these two teams met it was a victory in the vicinity of one hundred points in the favour of the Bushrangers. The Bushies managed to gain some ascendency in the second quarter and lead by nine points at the main break.
Ivanhoe and Yarra Valley have clearly been the two best teams of the year so it’s fitting that they play off in the big one. It’s so difficult to pick between these two. I’m going to stick with Yarra Valley. I just think the momentum they would have gathered from the amazing second half against UHSVU, will carry them above and beyond Ivanhoe. In saying that, there is no doubt it will go down to the wire.
was seen leaving Yarra Valley’s change rooms after half time may explain the sudden lift in intensity and ability. From all reports he is a very inspirational individual. In all seriousness, the contrast in the performances from the first half to the second was phenomenal. Yarra Valley piled on 19 goals to five to run out 96-point victors. The Final Countdown
Exitlude
Well the date is set and it’s time to toss all deadlines and commitments out the window. The Division 3 title is up for grabs, but who will claim it? Yarra Valley had an unbelievable year, and proved in the preliminary final that they still are the power house that they have been throughout the season. Their defences were down in the first final, but this time the stakes are high, will there be a fairytale ending? Staggering blows? This could be real…simple. Ivanhoe on the other hand stunned the competition when they got the job done in that final. They had their most consistent year in sometime, but let’s hope they don’t stop there.
Aggressively, we all defend the role we play. Regrettably, time’s come to send you on your way. We’ve seen it all bonfires of trust, flash floods of pain. It doesn’t really matter, don’t you worry, it’ll all work out. No, it doesn’t even matter, don’t you worry, that ain’t what it’s all about. We hope you enjoyed your stay. It’s been good to have you with us, even if it’s just for the day. We hope you enjoyed your stay. Outside the sun is shining, seems like heaven isn’t far away. It’s good to have you with us, even if it’s just for the day. Good luck to both sides and congratulations on brilliant seasons.
Gee whiz it’s a tantalising match up. TEAM

DIVISION 1
A TRULY GRAND FINALE In what can only be described as a magnificent showcase of amateur football, North Old Boys – St Patrick’s defeated Peninsula Old Boys by three goals at Sandringham last Sunday to convincingly win the Division 1 premiership. Not since its 1982 A Grade win had the famous Brunswick-based club won a senior flag; importantly, this was the first premiership since NOBs combined with St Patrick’s Ballarat in 2006. For the Pirates, the bitter pill of another grand final loss will surely be difficult to swallow. Perfect conditions greeted player and spectator alike at Trevor Barker Oval, and it was NOBs who looked the better team in the early stages. With skipper Matt Keown notching up a couple of early majors to make his presence felt, NOBs had all the play in the first term, kicking six goals to two. By the first break, NOBSP had opened up a handy 26-point gap over their opponents. It would prove ultimately to be a decisive buffer, for unlike in the second-semi, North were piling on the scoreboard pressure, and the second quarter would evolve similarly to the first. NOBs’ midfield was well on top, winning the contested ball and denying the Pirates forwards any clean supply, whilst ruckman Peter Shepherd was on top in the middle. NOBs booted another five for the term. At one stage, the lead blew out to a massive 55 points before Peninsula kicked the last two to go into the long break 38 points down but with some hope. A huge third quarter would be needed if the Pirates were to get back into the contest. To their credit, Peninsula came out into the second half with renewed fight and gradually worked themselves back into the game. The catalyst for their revival was the Pirates midfield, which began to win the majority of contests, whilst the runners across half-back were also causing some rebounding damage. Whilst they only kicked three, Peninsula restricted NOBs to two majors, resulting in the margin being a manageable 30 points at three-quarter time. Pirates coach Brett McIlwraith was measured with his charges at the orange-break. But NOBs coach Richard Peoples was all fire and brimstone, his exhortations imploring his players not to throw away this golden opportunity for glory. VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012
The last term was a classic. Peninsula, with Nick Fisher standing tall up forward, threw everything at NOBs. Barbour goaled early to ignite the large Pirates contingent, but Peninsula could never narrow the margin to less than ten points: NOBs always seemed to find a steadying goal, never allowing the gap to creep down to single figures. In the last ten minutes, both teams were out on their feet: Peninsula constantly booted the ball long in the hope of a mark, whilst North grimly defended. It was fabulous finals football. When the siren sounded, exhausted bodies were strewn about the arena, gasping for air and either breathing in the sweet scent of victory or attempting to digest foul defeat.
The lunches have been hearty, and the post-match conversations brilliant. Thanks to all the club correspondents who consistently provided me with information and news, as well as the folk at VAFA headquarters. Last, but not least, thanks to my wife for her indulgence. I am fortunate to have been a small contributor to such a well-run competition as the VAFA.
And so it was that North Old Boys – St Patrick’s, with their eighteenth win in succession, deservedly claim their rewards; Shepherd, Martin Porter, Tim Brady and the long-kicking Adam Oakley were all excellent contributors for the victors. Horsley and Keown both kicked 4. For Peninsula, best were the aforementioned Fisher, Ben Southam and Alex Wood. All Pirates fans should be in no doubt that their players gave their all right until the final siren. Reserves: Old Geelong went one better than last season and claimed the “Magoos” flag with a 22 point win over the Unicorns in the curtain raiser. Despite challenging in the early part of the match, MHSOB tired badly in the last quarter, falling away to allow the Oggers to claim a comfortable win. Smokie says: After three years, this is my final column for the Amateur Footballer. It has been a blast, but it is now time for a fresh scribe to step into my shoes. I have immensely enjoyed bashing out reports (and latterly, tweets) over the journey. TEAM

DIVISION 2
SUCCESS FOR THE BLUE AND GOLD In a Grand Final for the ages, Bulleen Templestowe weathered three, fourth term lead changes to claim the 2012 Division 2 Premiership.
Moments before the three quarter time siren, Cherbakof, Wilson and Voglis teamed up for another major, swinging the deficit in Bulleen’s favour in the process.
As the final siren echoed across Central Reserve drawing the season to a close, it was a mere 2 points that would spell the difference between back-to-back premierships for Prahran and unparalleled elation for the Bullants.
Despite Bulleen Templestowe’s Paul Florence charging through the centre and sending the ball inside 50 from the opening bounce, it was Prahran Assumption through Ash Parsons who drew first blood, a shot on the run from 45 sending the Two Blues supporters behind the goals into a frenzy.
A home and away ledger of two-0 in Bulleen’s favour and a flawless finals campaign to date had many predicting a comfortable Bullant victory. What ensued was anything but. Near perfect conditions greeted the players as they ran onto the ground, and it would be Bulleen that drew first blood inside a minute through a Peter Voglis snap, his first of four for the afternoon. In contrast to the opening minute, both sides took a cautious and defensive approach to the opening stanza, the ball spending most of the first quarter pin balling between half back lines. Blayne Dempsey from Prahran and Russell Course from Bulleen the benefactors, both with at least 10 touches in the first. Both sides missed easy opportunities in front of goal. The usually deadeye Kristian Cherbakof failing to convert after a 25-metre penalty and Ryan Pascoe unable to finish off his work from a sensational pack mark.
When Adam Sleight (perhaps concerned for of his ancient hamstrings), passed off to Adam Simpson who in turn converted, you’d be forgiven for thinking the contest was over. The Bulleen Templestowe that usually conquer teams without an ounce of mercy, were replaced with 22 fumbling impersonators, the weight of the occasion appearing to take its toll. By his lofty standards, Florance had been quieter than usual throughout the day. Bumped from centre stage by players of the ilk of Edsall, Morris and Azer, Leadership was required and with the ability to turn a game off their own boots, Florance, Edsall and Cherbakof dutifully responded with a herculean performance. Goals to the Florence and Khouri saw
another lead change, this time it would be unassailable. Prahran weren’t without their chances, Sleight and Donahoo both failing to capitalise on easy chances. The misses painfully compounded when Peter Voglis sent the eventual match winner home from 45 out on the boundary. With 60 seconds to go, to the continuous roar of the crowd, the game managed to find a final gear. The intensity from all 44 players was unparalleled. Players with nothing left to give gave everything. And when Cherbakof desperately forced and error deep in defence and somehow scrambled the ball for a rushed behind, it was apparent that Bulleen Templetowe would win to end an amazing game, and an amazing season from Bulleen Templestowe. When the siren sound the margin was a behind and Bulleen Templestowe had a shot at to complete. Amidst instant elation or dismay (depending which camp you hail from) you’d be struggling to find a coach, player or spectator who could tell you the result of the final kick of the day. Bulleen have won premierships before, and they’ll win them again. But after such an excruciating 2011, I suspect this may be the best of them all.
While Blayne Dempsey continued to rack up possessions at will across the backline, it was little known Jesse Wilson who started to draw the fanfare of the Bulleen following. Given the daunting task to run with James Musster for the afternoon, the teenager took on the request with aplomb, comprehensively taking the points in a unanimous decision. His victory typified when he ran Musster down twice on opposing wings in the second term, both resulting in Bulleen forward 50 entries. Prahran Assumption were seemingly perturbed by the low scoring first half, opened the game up early in the third quarter, goals to Sleight and Simpson extending their lead to 19 points. However it was once again the speedster Jesse Wilson who had the Bullants faithful salivating, using his blistering pace to break the lines and set up the first of Anthony Lucisano’s goals. A quick snap out of a goalsquare scrum two minutes later would give Lucisano his second in as many minutes and bring the margin back to five points.

DIVISION 4
ALL OVER FOR ANOTHER YEAR In the game we had been waiting for all year, the Division 4 grand final did not disappoint. South Mornington and Swinburne University have been far and away the two dominant sides in 2012. Both teams only lost two games during the home and away season and one of those was against the other. After 12 games, the undefeated Tigers were the talking point, not only of Division 4, but of the amateur community. Suddenly, the lowest division in the VAFA was one that attracted the most interest. Everyone wanted to know if South Mornington could achieve the unthinkable and go through the 18 game season without one blemish to their card. Unfortunately for the football romantics the drama ended in round 13 and in the final third of the year questions where asked about the yellow and black and their ability to even win the flag. Whilst doubts were cast over the Tigers capabilities, the Razorbacks quietly went about their business and closed the gap between South Mornington and themselves. The reality though was that the bridge between the top two and the remaining eight sides was substantial. Yes, Eley Park and Point Cook could produce patches of brilliance against South Mornington and Swinburne Uni, but under the heat of September pressure they were never going to stand a chance against these two powerhouses. At Scammell Reserve on Saturday, in front of a boisterous and jovial crowd, the two ladder leaders went to war. In almost ideal conditions for playing, little sun but little breeze, the game began in a ferocious manner. South Mornington was typically wasteful in front of goal, like they have been regularly this season. Whilst Swinburne Uni burst out of the blocks in emphatic form booting six goals to take a 14 point lead into the first break.
the game was Swinburne Uni’s to lose. Third quarters are commonly referred to as the premiership quarter as the outcome of this stanza ultimately has the biggest impact on the conclusion of the tale. On this occasion, the old mantra did not prove true as South Mornington did claw their way back slightly but not significantly. The game should have been over considering the Tigers had 11 scoring shots to four in the third term. However, once again their terrible conversion rate in front of goals was haunting their chances of victory. Eight behinds almost scuttled the good ship South Mornington.
There is no doubt that these two sides will be up against it in Division 3 next season, but both have a hardnosed game that should assure them a longer stay up than promoted teams of previous years.
In the final quarter, the Tigers clicked into gear and dismissed the goal kicking yips that had plagued them all day. A seven goals to three quarter dramatically shifted the margin in their favour and by the final siren the dominant team all year was rewarded with a premiership. Only 15 points separated the teams in the end but the yellow and black brigade could have won by far more if they had made the most of their opportunities in front of goal.

THE BIG V IN 2012 The Big V had another successful year in 2012 with the seniors winning both games and our U23’s also recording a win. Before a home and away fixture was played the Big V commenced the year with two games against the EFL where the Premier –Premier B side defeated the Division 1 & 2 EFL side in a come from behind victory by two goals. Nick Sautner kicked three goals and the Old Carey teammates Julian Rowe and Lachlan McQueen Miscamble were brilliant all day in the warm conditions. The result balanced the ledger after the VAFA Premier C, Division 1-4 side had gone down earlier in the day to the EFL Division 3 & 4 side by 17 points. The Big V were in the contest thanks to Adam Barclay who kicked eight goals in a virtuoso display but it wasn’t enough to get the side over the line. The rolling U23 carnival continued with Western Australia visiting Sportscover to take on the Big V where the Vics triumphed by 26 points. Caulfield Grammarian Tom O’Sullivan led the side with vigour all day in the middle of the ground whilst twin forwards Jackson Eade (Old Camberwell) and Max Van Den Broek (Old Scotch) both booted six goals each. The senior Big V side was back in action on the Queen’s Birthday weekend with a trip up to harbour town to take on AFL Sydney at Blacktown. AFL Sydney pushed the Big V all day before we drew away in the final quarter to win by 47 points and maintain our 100% record against the NSW side. Jack Watts and Lachie Ferguson both kicked three goals each with Peter Summers and Jack Bull dominant in midfield. In July the VAFA U19 Big V side suited up for a game against the combined VCFL U19 side at Sportscover Arena but were unfortunately never really in the contest. The VCFL boys came to play and eventually won by 50 points. Brede Seccull (Old Haileybury) and Dan Garside (St Bedes/ Mentone Tigers) were our best players on the day. There are still some Big V games to be played in 2012 with the VAFA again sending an U18 invitational side to New Zealand to play matches against a NZ representative side. The squad has been chosen and the boys depart on October 5 and will be led by 2011 junior coach of the year Tom Maule who coaches the Old Xaverians U19 team in Premier U19.

PREMIER – DE LA SALLE IN A CLASSIC What a game of top class under age football put on by Old Xaverians and De La Salle in front of a massive crowd at Central Reserve. These two sides have played off in the last handful of deciders with the result of 2011 reversed as De La Salle ran out 40 point winners. The first half could have almost been a repeat of the second semi final between these sides a fortnight earlier, De La Salle opened up a lead at quarter time and extended it out to five goals at half time. Would Old Xavs come as they had two weeks ago? You bet. The Xavs kicked four goals to one in the third and the first of the final quarter to reduce the margin to single figures. But then De La Salle surged again. When the margin got out to 21 points the feeling was it was game over, TEAM

and on queue the Old Xavs resistance almost stopped as De La kicked goals through Charlie Haley twice and another to Hugh Nicholson the game was dusted. Nicholson won the Medal as best on the ground for his four-goal performance and general ball use across half forward. Charlie Haley also slotted four goals his brother Harry found plenty of ball through the midfield. Louis Denton was best for Xavs but overall the De La defence was strong all day and restricted Rob Ralph to just two goals and the Xavs team to just nine.

decider from fourth spot and they only registered the two goals in the opening half to the 14 kicked by the Tonners. Old Brighton’s form this season saw them go in as heavy favourites and they lived up to their billing to win by a final margin of 132 points. Old Brighton had nine goal kickers who all kicked multiples with Charlie King the best of them with five majors. Those goals and his marking were enough for him to win the John Miles Medal for the best on the ground. TEAM

SECTION 3 – COLLEGIANS WIN AFTER THE SIREN Collegians defeated Mazenod by a goal after the siren to win a pulsating premiership decider by a goal. Scores were locked about half a dozen times in the final quarter that went 35 minutes with 12 goals kicked and numerous stoppages. The lead changed from Mazenod being a goal in front, to Collegians being a goal in front as the crowd were in raptures at the sheer desperation of both sides. Collegians kicked a goal with 13 seconds remaining to level the scores and from the bounce they won the clearance with Nick Blackney took a mark. The siren sounded and only 35 meters out, any
score would do. He kicked truly after the siren to fulfill every boys dream of kicking a goal after the siren to win a premiership. Collegians senior full forward Nick Sautner collected the footy after the goal was
kicked through and made sure it found its way back to Blackney so he has it as a keepsake. The premiership medal and the football he kicked to win the Grand Final – not a bad day out.

Old Geelong outscored Willy to take a 14 point lead into the three quarter time huddle and after the break the CY’s came out to throw everything they could at the OGs, they outscored them in the final quarter but it wasn’t enough as they fell just eight points short.

Old Geelong defeated Williamstown CYMS in a brilliant contest at Trevor Barker Oval by eight points to claim a second, later to become one of three premierships for the club in 2012. After a blistering 5.7 to 1.1 opening quarter had Williamston up by five goals the OG’s slowly worked their way back into the game. They were two points down at the long break thanks to Karey Taylor who had six goal goals to half time with five in the second quarter alone.
Parkdale Vultures won the U19 South Premiership at Central Reserve defeating De La Salle Gold 18.6.114 to 10.9.69 by 45 points. Lewis Emmerson won the Jon Simpson Medal for his seven-goal best on the ground performance. Parkdale coasted a little in the final quarter as De La Salle got their hands on the ball
to kick some late goals but the Vultures could afford to enjoy the moment. The late De La goals certainly didn’t stop the jubilation at the final siren of the Vultures supporters and the cheers could have been heard back in Parkdale.
U18 – OAKLEIGH’S KRUSHING WIN Oakleigh comfortably defeated Werribee Districts 19.12.126 to 8.8.56 at Central Reserve to secure another U18 Flag for the Krushers. Aaron Cloke added another medal to his collection winning the best on the ground medal to go with his competition best and fairest medal. Oakleigh setup the lead early and carried on with heavy scoring right up until the final siren. TEAM

VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012

RETRO
A TRULY GRAND FINALE 12 MONTHS AGO – 2011 Collegians won their first Premier A flag since 1993 when they defeated St Bedes Mentone Tigers for the second time in the 2011 finals’ series. St Bedes were 16 points up at quarter time but Collegians had taken a 4 goal lead by the main break. After a 6 goal to 3 third term by the Tigers, Collegians ran right away in the final term to win 18.20 to 14.8. Stuart Inglis of Collegians was the Jock Nelson Medalist. Caulfield Grammarians returned to A Section for the first time since the late 1980’s with a resounding win over St Bernards in the Premier B Grand final, 17.12 to 12.9. The game was exceptionally close for the first three quarters but Caulfield’s pace and commitment was the telling factor in the final term as they kicked 6 goals to 1. Mark Liddell of Caulfield Grammarians was the Ian Cordner Medalist and he also became the only Caulfield player to play in three senior premierships for his club since its entry into the VAFA in 1920. 5 YEARS AGO – 2007 Old Xaverians were in another Grand Final in A Section and met Old Brighton who had finished second to Xavs after the home and away games. In a great first quarter, the Xavs piled on 8.8 to 1.2. Brighton never managed to get into the match and trailed by 13 goals at three quarter time, but saved some face with a good last quarter before the siren sounded with the Xavs winning 18.15 to 10.16. The field umpires were Russell Davidson and Tim Sutcliffe. St Bedes Mentone Tigers defeated University Blacks 12.11 to 10.10 in the B Section Grand Final. 10 YEARS AGO – 2002 In the A Section Grand Final St Bernards opened strongly in the first term with 6 goals to 1 and followed up with 6 more in the second term to give them a 36 point lead at half time. They increased their lead by the last change and the Xavs would have to kick at least 8 goals to have a chance in the last. Despite a better effort, Xavs fell short of St Bernards who won the flag 20.15 to 15.14, their first A Section pennant in 27 seasons. Danny Byrne (St Bernards) won the “Jock” Nelson Medal for a best on ground performance and Michael Sneddon and Peter James were the field umpires. The two best teams after 18 rounds, Old Melburnians and Old Haileybury, subsequently met in the B Section Grand Final. The game was a tough encounter in the first half, Haileybury holding a 13 point advantage. OM’s came out in the third quarter and blitzed their opposition with 8 goals to 1 goal for the term. Haileybury did not recover from the onslaught and although they closed the gap, Melburnians were winners 14.9 to 12.9. Toby Roberts VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012

The premiership team line-up was as follows:
Section Grand Final against Old Paradians and his opposite number was former player John Booth. It was a fairly even first quarter with Ormond leading by 12 points and they increased their lead to 14 points at half time. The third term was a triumph for Ormond as they powered away to lead 16.10 to 5.8 at the final change. Paradians matched Ormond in the last quarter but Ormond’s second successive A Section premiership was secured, the final score was 19.13 to 8.13. John Posetti was the field umpire.

UMPIRES
Steve McCarthy & Cam Davidson
WE’RE HERE!!! Well, the big dance has arrived. This weekend we see the senior grand finals in Premier, Premier B and Premier C and don’t forget Division 3 who always throw our selections into confusion. Our Head Coach Tony Hales has prepared a form guide for the weekend’s top nine field umpires. And then there were 9. After weeks of hearing that hoary chestnut (no, not Bernie) “you’re still in the mix”, reality hit last Thursday night when the field umpires for the Premier Preliminary Finals were announced. So who are the men charged with for this week’s Premier Grand Finals? Russell “Rusty” Davidson: A bit like Kiwi in the 1983 Melbourne Cup, seems to get his timing just right, a big time September performer, umpired the 2011 Premier GF and the one before that and the one before that and… Andrew “Heff ” Heffernan: How well has he been bouncing the football lately? And his umpiring is not too bad either;
has overcome injury to get back to the top; favourite colours are red and black (supports Essendon, not that other September perennial). Luke “Prez” Holmes: Might be stepping down as the Prez but that doesn’t mean he’s relinquishing his opportunity to umpire another Premier GF. A hard working consistent performer again this year. Keen observers admire his ball tossing technique. Michael “Hoops” Hooper: Do we regard him as a Victorian or as an interloper from the West? Started the year off slowly but is peaking at the right time with consistent performances. Renowned collector of team sheets. Mervyn “Merv” Monty: Surely someone can come up with a better nickname for the man who is Mr Cool on the football field, never gets flustered and just gets the job done week after week. Loves to take the first bounce... (Just ask the under 18s rep side about that first bounce in New Zealand. Matt “No” Pryor: As was stated earlier in the season, we’re still trying to find some dirt on him. Has blossomed into a reliable, unnoticed decision maker who is always in perfect position. Only criticism for Mr Perfect, he favours the long, high pant look with his shorts. Was crowned the 2012 VAFA Umpire of the Year at the Winners’ Dinner last Monday. Sean “Junior” Scully: Officially, the most 31
improved field umpire for 2012. Can he go all the way and cap off a stellar year with the big one? Great work ethic, a real student of the game; has overcome the pressure of being a member of the VAFAUA royal family (but not in a Prince Harry sort of way). Daniel “Smooch” Silfo: The trigger meister of the Ammos. No truth to the rumour that he lounges in the end zone for three quarters and then breaks out to scorch the turf. Has had another terrific year and looking for back to back Premier Grand Finals. Grant “Droppy” Wardrop: Our man from the western suburbs whose dedication to training cannot be questioned… well it has been by some. A professional who is never satisfied with his performance and is always looking to improve. Sponsors To our sensational sponsors in Personal Mortgage Managers and Harris Family Butchers thanks for all your support during the year. Pens down From Cam and Macca we thank you for your contributions during the year. We couldn’t have provided you with this quality (?) without your help. Thanks to our regular contributors who manage to find dirt on people, in particular Tony Hales, Peter Teasdale and Peter “Tugga” Pullen. VAFA GRAND FINAL 2012
